Hi Everyone So it’s official. It’s almost the end of September and the countdown is definitely on until Christmas, with only 87 sleeps until the big man in the red suit comes to visit. Anyone that knows me knows this is my favourite time of the year – I love the lead up to the day. All the planning and organising sorting out where the Christmas party will be, making plans to catch up with friends before we head off on holidays, getting my hair done and buying some suitable party frocks. So for those of you who like the event but don’t like the impact it has on your budget or worse still the credit card bill – then you will be pleased to see the 2nd edition of our Local Shopper Discount Deals voucher booklet come out with your paper this week. To coincide with the usual expenses at this time of year, you will find plenty of super deals to take
advantage of. We have a number of great eat out and take away meal offers, as well as some very nice hair and beauty offers, and also some retail stores who make perfect ‘Christmas Gift’ shopping easy. You may also notice that the guide is a little thinner this time. After the first time they were delivered, our very dedicated delivery team let us know that they were a little tricky to get through the letterbox inside the paper so we have made them a little easier to handle. Regards,

Blind cricketers visit Glasshouse
The Queensland Blind Cricket team visited Glasshouse Mountains recently to play their annual match against a sighted team, organised by the Beerwah Lions Club. The game was played on the oval at the Glasshouse Mountains School, a venue favoured by the blind cricketers for its absence of distracting traffic noise. A spokesperson for the blind team explained that keen hearing is just one sense that partially compensates for lost vision. On this occasion the match resulted in a narrow win for the sighted team, thanks to some keen young cricketers recruited by the Lions. This was the second time in the last 20 years

that the sighted team has managed to avoid defeat. The new young players were left in awe of their handicapped opponents, particularly their batting ability and fast underarm bowling. Blind Cricket had its origins many years ago in India, a group of blind people disgruntled at not being able to see a test match decided to produce their own version of cricket. It’s believed they used a tin can with gravel inside it as a ball, so the blind batsmen and fielders could hear it, when it was coming toward them. Modern day blind cricket uses the same principal, although the tin can has been replaced with a smooth plastic ball containing lead weights and bottle tops. More information on blind cricket can be found on Google.

Beerwah actor’s webseries to premiere on October 4 Local resident and actor Daniel George is counting down the days until his family drama, Levasque premiers online on October 4. Daniel was the executive producer as well as one of the lead actors, the writer and director of the series. “Initially I wrote it because I wanted to create something for myself,” Daniel said. “It kind of evolved into this big project. It just became a really fun project that I wanted to do and webseries is a growing medium, so I thought I’d try our luck online.” The series follows the lives of the Levasque family: Kelly, Logan and Sarah. Logan is an up and coming tennis player whose life is thrown into turmoil when his parents die in a tragic car accident.

Daniel started writing the script in January 2010. “When I started writing it I was writing for myself and I wanted to play to my strengths. I’m no professional tennis player at all but I can hit a ball and I can fake it enough for the camera,” he said. He discovered filming the series was a lot harder than he thought it would be. “I think because I was taking on so many different roles. It was my first time as director and I don’t plan to direct anything again,” he said. Other small every day challenges included needing to postpone shoots when an actress didn’t turn up one day or because of technical issues. With the premiere so close, the team of 10 core crew members and 20 actors are getting excited. “After working on it for so long I can’t wait for it to be out there,” Daniel said. Any locals tuning in will recognise the Landsborough Historical Museum which was used to do some filming for the series in June. Filmed on a budget of just $600.00 the series consists of 10-12 episodes of 10 minutes each. The premier on October 4 can be seen on its own channel at www.vimeo.com or there will be a direct link on the ‘Levasque’ Facebook page. Series two is already being planned. “We’re all just creative people so it’s fun for us just to get together and make something. We have the resources, we have the people,” he said.
STEPPING OUT PODIATRY talks about
THE FUTURE OF YOUR CHILD’S FEET Children’s feet are very different from adult feet as the bones and muscles are still growing. Most of the bones in the feet have not been formed yet, and represent a cartilage (softer) model of the bone. Balance, coordination and the sequence of muscle activity whilst walking, running and jumping are developed from complex nerve signals. These signals are established in the infant years and they are fine tuned throughout the childhood years. Alignment issues, flat feet, ankle pain or muscle weakness in the lower limbs can make it difficult for children to develop these fundamental coordination skills, and often lead to fatigue, clumsiness and pain. Quite often your own feet are a good indication of your child’s feet in years to come as many musculoskeletal problems can be hereditary in nature. The Podiatrists at Stepping Out Podiatry have a special interest in children’s feet alignment and gait (walking style) and would be happy to look at any concerns that your child may have. A ripper tale
Prostate support group for Beerwah
We first spoke to local writer and illustrator, Dean Jacobs, about his children’s book, ‘Emma Cries’, inspired by his two daughters last September. Exactly 12 months later his first novel, ‘The Streets of Whitechapel’, couldn’t be any further apart on the genre spectrum considering it is based on Jack the Ripper. Dean finds it hard to explain the huge jump in genres. “I don’t know,” he said, “it’s really weird. The children’s books were always something that came to me easily. From there to a novel was just a challenge to see if I could actually write a novel. I was inspired by the mystery behind the whole subject of Jack the Ripper.” In 2004 he wrote the first chapter as a university assignment. It wasn’t until this year he decided to finish the book. It took him just three months, including the illustrations he created himself which are at the beginning of every chapter. Dean likes to describe his book as ‘faction’, fiction based on fact. “It’s a first person book told from the perspective of James Collins, my lead character,” he said. The book begins with James as an old man in the year 1954 who is plagued by terrible dreams. “I think from what I’ve read from everybody else no-one has approached it from first person going back and telling the story,” Dean said. From the well-attended author talks Dean has been giving, he can see that Jack the Ripper still fascinates many people.
State Member for Caloundra and Shadow Health Minister, Mark McArdle has announced that the group was formed in Beerwah, with the inaugural meeting held on Thursday, September 22 at the Beerwah/ Peachester RSL.

“I think it’s the theatrical side of the whole event,” he said. “People don’t see it as a m gruesome murder spree over three m 6pThey romonths. f g u A see the vision of this th well-dressed Egentleman IALthe i 12 S NTover withoutFarcare in the world,S fog ESdrifting G N I OK cobblestones near his feet, the sound of horses BO clopping over the stones, people just love the visual of it all and the mystery because it was never solved.” In his book, Dean’s character knows who Jack the Ripper is, but Dean has discovered something else interesting at his talks. “A lot of people do think they know who it is.” If you would like to purchase a copy or would like more information visit www.thestreetsofwhitechapel.com

“Prostate Cancer was once a disease you died with; now it is a disease you die of,” said Mr McArdle. Each year in Australia, close to 3,000 men die of prostate cancer and around 20,000 new cases are diagnosed. “Over a lengthy period of time men have not wanted to understand or take the time to understand their bodies and prostate cancer is now a growing problem given our ageing population." “Modern technology can keep us alive much longer but that has now brought prostate cancer to the fore as a real concern for men,” he said. “Awareness campaigns are now bringing to the attention of the public the necessity for men and their partners to be aware of prostate cancer and to have regular checks,” he said. “The Prostate Cancer Support Group meeting will enliven further interest in the region and bring further light to the problem.” “Millions of dollars has been spent on cancers that are particular to women and by no means should that be reduced, however it is time that prostate cancer is looked at, funded and studied in earnest,” he said.

A spike in demand has left Queensland with just two days’ supply of O and A blood types, increasing the need for residents across the Glasshouse region to roll up their sleeves and give blood. The Blood Service is bringing a collection van to the region and they are urging anyone who can give blood to take an hour out of their day and change someone’s life. Daniel Rowling, Community Relations Officer for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service urged people to give blood and help save lives when the donor van travels to Glass House Mountains, Landsborough and Beerwah between October 10 – 13. “One in three of us will need blood in our lifetime, yet only one in 30 of us actually gives blood,” Daniel said. “We are urging those that live in the area to think about giving just an hour of your time to roll up your sleeves and give blood. “With every donation helping to save three lives, it is something very special that just about anyone can do for those requiring life saving treatments. “The lives of cancer patients, road trauma victims, unborn babies and people undergoing dialysis all rely on receiving donated blood and blood products. Giving blood only takes an hour of your time and is one of the easiest ways to give back to the community. To donate at Glass House, Beerwah or Landsborough, or at any of the many locations around the Sunshine Coast, contact the Australian Red Cross Blood Service today on 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au Glass House Mountains: Landsborough: Beerwah:

Immediate outgoing president, George Mackenzie, selected Morris House Neighbourhood Centre, (along with other organisations) in appreciation for the community work done by Morris House. Morris House Neighbourhood Centre is a notfor-profit organisation which provides a range of services to the community. These services include emergency relief, free food and bread program, computer use, internet use, counselling, use of equipment such as photocopying, fax, phone, JP service, computer courses and other courses,
Rotary's immediate past President George Mackenzie presents Ann Husband, Centre Co-ordinator and Imelda, volunteer with the new equipment
Tax help, referral help, and many more. The Centre is staffed totally by volunteers. The grant from the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains has provided a digital television and DVD player which will be used for training purposes as well as entertainment for children while their parents are receiving help. Rotary is a worldwide organisation with 1.2 million members. Australia has 1,165 clubs with 34,000 members. Rotary projects include Polio eradication and also Malaria eradication. They have supplied 260,000 mosquito nets to help malaria eradication. Rotary also has an ongoing project in Gizo, Solomon
Islands, to build schools and medical centres. Morris House Neighbourhood Centre co-ordinator, Ann Husband expressed the gratitude of the centre for the generosity of Rotary in providing the television and DVD player. The new TV and DVD player will greatly improve the training courses held at Morris House and will be appreciated by all clients and volunteers.
Tireless volunteer to become Senior Fellow A former deputy principal, who is now involved in several organisations that actively encourage female students to pursue their academic goals, is about to become an Honorary Senior Fellow of the University of the Sunshine Coast. Beverley Hinz, 62, of Mooloolah Valley will receive the prestigious honorary award at the University’s Graduation Ceremony on Friday, September 30. Ms Hinz has been a member of Graduate Women Queensland Sunshine Coast branch since 1994, and forged strong links with USC during her time as branch president from 2007 to 2010. Her other roles within the branch have included chairing the Bursary Selection Committee, which awards bursaries to female undergraduate students at the University each year. In 2009, Ms Hinz was inducted as an honorary member of USC’s Chapter of the Golden Key Honour Society. Following this, she initiated a University mentoring program for female postgraduate students at USC, and became a supporter of the STEMM (Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring) program based at Burnside State High School. Ms Hinz said her motivation to help others was driven by her own educational experiences.
www.gcnews.com.au
“Education was valued in my family and I was the first in my family to do post secondary school studies,” she said. “So I’ve always had a desire to see other women have the same opportunities as I had.” “In my last role as a deputy principal, I recall a Year 12 girl who became pregnant. With the support of her mother, teachers and administration, she was able to have the baby and return to complete the year.
Bev Hinz “It is unfortunate that many girls feel compelled to drop out of school, often because of the reactions of others, but also because it is not easy being pregnant and a teenager.” Ms Hinz also volunteers as a management committee member of the Maleny Hinterland Information Centre.

Another Tibrogargan rescue On Thursday, September 22, a very fortunate climber was rescued from Mt Tibrogargan. He was a Korean man, who spoke little English and as a consequence, a police interpreter was required during the rescue. It appears that on his descent, late in the afternoon, he wandered off from the conventional path. He lost his footing, and fell some 40 metres but miraculously, sustained no serious injuries. He was discovered well after dark. As he was in good health, the decision was made to rescue him at first light on Friday morning using the AGL helicopter. The services of the SES were greatly appreciated, especially those of Robert and Jason. SES is always keen to welcome new members. This is an exciting part of the world as far as rescues, and one learns many valuable skills. SES meetings are held on the first and third Thursday evening of every month at the SES Headquarters in Beerwah. Please call Dave on 0417 759 483 for details.

GCCC students enjoy fine French cuisine
Year 8 and 9 French students at Glasshouse Country Christian College have been studying a unit called ‘Au Café’ meaning ‘At the Café’. Their assessment last week was based on them acting as waiters, asking questions of the customer in French in order to properly serve the food and drink. All students had to create their own French menu but the Year 9 students had the added task of researching different French provinces and creating a menu from that specific region. This week the tables were turned as the students became the customers. Nine French students went on an excursion to Chez Claude in Woombye where they enjoyed a lunch of fine French cuisine. The lesson began on the bus as students practiced pronouncing their selection from the delicious menu. As part of the learning experience, students also had to record their excursion lesson on an iPad. All the students were brave enough to try the snail entrée and some of the girls surprised themselves by how much they enjoyed them. The boys however, were not so impressed and had to practice a polite comme ci comme ça with the appropriate hand gestures to express themselves.
Main meals of la cuisse de canard a l’orange (duck in orange sauce), la ballottine de poisson locale (fish souffle) and lamb provençale were enjoyed by all, but the ‘oohs and ahhs’ were reserved for the desserts. A wickedly decadent crème brûlée and rich velvety chocolate mousse that would justify any gym membership and every calorie was worth it. Chef Claude Faullimmel explained (in French) how the chocolate mousse recipe had been handed down through his family for generations. Some of the girls continued the French theme and danced the cancan outside the restaurant. The restaurant experience was truly the highlight of the French term and Chef Claude’s expertise, warmth and hospitality made the day all the more special.

Strawberries met savagery at St Paul’s Spring Fair The St Paul’s Spring Fair is well known in the Caboolture Community for being the ‘Strawberry’ Spring Fair. This year was no different, with mountains of strawberries and cream being enjoyed by the thousands of fair-goers. But some new additions made an impact this year; an
attack-dog show, presented by Adam Sessions of K9 Securities, really wowed the crowd. Ian Bloxham, the St Paul’s Business Manager, had organised the demonstration, thinking that it might be quite interesting. So when a volunteer was needed to play a ‘baddie’ for the guard dog to attack, his name was at the top of the list. Not that he minded, having been a German Shepherd owner for most of his life. But when the time came to be attacked, even he felt some nerves. “It was quite a bizarre feeling, knowing what was going to happen,” he said. “Being dressed up like the Michelin Man and looking like Pal dog food isn’t something I’ve ever done before!” Another addition to this year’s Spring Fair was ‘Teen Space’, an area aimed at the youth of the area. This area will be developed into something ‘bigger and better’ for next year, says Spring Fair organisers.

Doing Business
Club Glass House has plenty on offer
In the past six months plenty of ‘tradies’ have been kept busy working on the Bowls Club at Glass House Mountains. The resulting renovations have definitely been worth the effort. The new look Club Glass House still retains the informal, relaxed atmosphere but the changes to the layout and facilities mean that the club can now offer much more to their members and the rest of the community. With a commercial kitchen they can provide meals in the bistro where lunch and dinner is now served. They operate Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and Wednesday to Saturday for dinner, and there’s a separate coffee shop that serves great coffee and cake all day, every day. There is plenty of variety on the blackboard menu, however if you take Club Manager Sharon’s Bochow’s tip, try the Chef’s signature calamari dish. For those who enjoy a game of bingo then it is a great spot to head down to on a Friday morning and while you’re there you can grab yourself a coffee and cake deal for only $5.00. If you like to have a drink with your meal you might want to organise a free ride on the courtesy bus which operates from 5.00pm to late from Wednesday to Saturday and from 11.00am – 3.00pm on Sunday (just make sure you phone the club to book your seat). And if you like a little more action with your food and drink why not give Barefoot Bowls a go on a Friday night? There are not many sports where you can have a beer while you play; sign on by 5.30pm to make sure you get a game. If you have a 2011 membership card for the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club then you’re already a member, and if not, 2012 club Membership is now available. If you have any questions give the The new coffee shop club a call on 5436 5000.

Chef Sunny Appuhamy has cooked it all: seafood at Hayman Island Resort, croc, kangaroo and emu at Kakadu and of course authentic curries from his birthplace of Sri Lanka. The one thing in common no matter what he cooks is his love of creating new dishes. With 20 years experience in the food industry, Sunny’s culinary journey began when he trained as a Chef in New Zealand. He Sunny, Abela and Kanthi worked at the Regent Hotel and the Hyatt Regency in Auckland before moving to Australia in 2005. He has worked in many places while travelling including Hayman Island Resort and the Arnhem Club in the Northern Territory where he was the Executive Chef. Sunny and his family, wife Kanthi and daughter Abela, decided to settle here because they knew it was a great area for families. And families are sure to enjoy their restaurant/deli/café. Sunny’s Kitchen off Steve Irwin Way, offers fine gourmet food. Yes, curry is on the menu but so is a range of other mouth-watering dishes such as Jerk Chicken, Risotto and Stuffed Olive Rice. And you can’t go past their homemade sweets including tarts, cakes and slices. Using local products as much as possible, everything is homemade fresh on the premises, even the sauces and dressings which are specialties of Sunny’s. He also ensures his dishes look as good as they taste. “Presentation is very important,” said Sunny, “because people first eat with their eyes. We always get a lot of great comments which is great. We value customer feedback.” Their opening special of $10.00 meals is still on until the end of September and as of October 1 the take away meals will increase to $12.00, which is still great value as they include rice and a pappadum. Sunny’s Kitchen is eat-in or takeaway, and it’s BYO. Opening hours from Wednesday to Sunday are currently 10.00am to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to 8.30pm. From October 1 the lunch hours will change from 11.30am to 2.00pm. Located at 412 Steve Irwin Way, Beerburrum. Please note that EFTPOS is not available – cash only. Community Group Updates Achieving Greatness Together By Pat Johnson, Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Previously printed in the Toastmasters Magazine
Reflecting on our Toastmasters experience, I believe it takes true inspiration or vision of who and what we can become to draw us through the door of our very first Toastmasters meeting. Whether this is the vision of the person you could become and the skills you could develop, or fear or lack of confidence that pushed you through the door, welcome. Welcome to the safe and supportive environment where greatness happens! I thought most people came to the program looking for the same things I did. But what an amazing revelation this experience has been! I find people joining clubs worldwide who already have very sophisticated communication or leadership skills, people who already possess confidence and self-esteem. I gradually realised there really is no typical new or experienced Toastmaster and therefore no definition of how greatness would be defined for them. As we mentor and support one another on our club environment, we share our own personal greatness. Toastmasters International is in the education business and we change the lives of men and women around the world, one person at the time, and one assignment at a time. Each time we receive feedback in the form of applause or a suggestion for improvement. Our toastmasters program empowers us to break the bonds of captivity, to shrug off our lack of self-esteem and lack of confidence and to move through the various levels of communication and leadership development, experiencing mini steps of success each time we challenge ourselves. My wish for each of you is that we spend some time recognising and acknowledging our own personal greatness. Remember that your greatness will be unique to you. My thoughts and feelings on the concept of us Achieving Greatness Together is captured by the Scottish writer and politician John Buchan, who said, ‘The task of leadership is not to put greatness into the people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already’. May we elicit it together!

Our guest speaker this month was Helen Eddie from Peachester who gave us the low down on Australian bush flower essences. Essences are derived from bush flowers and can be used for all manner of purposes as described by some of their names; abundance, confidence, emergency, travel, radiation, calm and clear, etc. The bush flowers are carefully picked early in the morning, floated in a bowl of purified water for several hours and then combined with some brandy to preserve. The essences are natural, have no chemicals or side effects, are not addictive and you can’t overdose on them! The next View Club outing will be held on October 5 when we will visit Maroochydore Botanic Gardens with a BYO morning tea and picnic lunch. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. Coonowrin Road Race Track!
Well we’ve been living here for nearly five years and during that time the traffic has definitely increased and got faster even though it is a 60km zone all the way. People are not taking any notice of the speed limit. We get lots of trucks day and night. Some of these drivers do not comply with the speed limit; some are so noisy they sound like a plane coming in to land. The totally ignorant ones use their Jake Brakes, which I am sure there is no need, considering that they are empty. There are also unregistered bikes going to the forest for a bush bash, with riders standing up on their bikes and doing well over the speed limit. They are also very, very loud. Cars doing well over the speed limit, and at a guess some would be doing well over the 100kms. It is time the police took some notice of what goes on here. Trucking Company’s need to be more responsible for some of their (Cowboy!) drivers. Speed humps would be a great slow down idea for Coonowrin Road. Kaz and Rich Glass House Mountains
Peachester Range Road
I have made every effort to keep the local community informed on Main Road updates regarding repairs to Peachester Range Road. I have written to the Minister on behalf of the Peachester community asking for these road repairs to be fast tracked on several occasions. And recently I raised the matter in Parliament imploring that locals have been patient long enough. The response from the Minister and Department has been the same - in the wake of the January floods all Department resources have been stretched to meet the demands of a state wide reconstruction effort. The Minister has advised the need to perform extensive investigations following the significant landslip has caused some delay. However, at the request of one of your readers I have again written to the Minister asking that his Department now consider holding a community forum to explain to the community why the reconstruction of Peachester Range Road to two lanes continues to be delayed. I will continue to update the community as information comes to hand. Andrew Powell MP Member for Glass House 14

Re: Where are the Div 1 Candidates? Bruce Highway Upgrade.
No. 1. Where are the Div 1 Candidates indeed. A lot has been said about the state of affairs at Glasshouse Village, the mess and poor administration, the wasted rate payers money on the piece of stoneware, or whatever it is meant to be. The electricity was apparently connected finally, however, I never see any lights. I do see the unkempt grass verge and entrance to our village from the Steve Irwin Way and that in itself is a constant eyesore. No. 2. Bruce Highway update. Six lanes at the rate the area is growing is like building a single lane bridge, totally inadequate, just look at or drive the M1 from Brisbane to Nerang. There are already major problems daily. Years ago I had a school bus run taking in the Pumicestone Passage. I asked our Div 1 councillor why Caloundra Council wasted so much money building a new road alongside the old Roys Road, west of the Bruce Highway, when all they had to do was put three feet onto the sides of the existing road and then hotmix the whole lot. Her response was it was much too costly and cannot be done. Three and a half years later, that is exactly what they did. The Bruce Highway requires roads such as Johnstone and Roys Road to be very serviceable and open at all times for when accidents occur on the Bruce, traffic then has an avenue of escape. However Old Gympie Road is long past it as an escape route. Do not forget that Emergency Services also require these escape roads. Steve Irwin Way is an arterial road that requires widening to at least two lanes from start to finish; it can take the extra traffic and is much more suitable. We have local Members of Parliament in and around our area, Federal and State, how about doing something about this predicament? Let the people of the Sunshine Coast and the Great South East know that you are alive, that you care and more importantly, you read your local papers and care. We are voters, we do care. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
RE: Where are the Div. 1 Candidates?
It is with pleasure I respond to TCs letter to the editor dated September 21, in which a measure of interest in the Glass House Mountains CBD streetscape project was requested. I have been a consistent local shopper/patron of the Glass House Mountains township business centre for over 20 years. I like many, have witnessed various town-centre changes including but not limited to the construction of the IGA supermarket and adjunct specialty shops, the tavern, the tourist information centre and more recently the streetscape project. In 2007, as a member of this community, I took it upon myself to attend numerous council facilitated community feedback workshops held in relation to construction of the tourist information centre, and in 2010, I amongst others, put forward suggestion to council to incorporate interpretive signage similar to that of Beerburrum into the current and projected streetscape works. It could be purely coincidental, but most people I have talked to whilst campaigning for the
upcoming local government elections consider the overall streetscape concept not to be an outstanding success, but nearly all, also say, it is an improvement to what was there previously. And as for the new ‘one-way’ directional traffic signage, I am the first to admit, that it will take me some time to adjust as I previously approached from the south, but from a traffic and pedestrian safety perspective, in my view, it should have been done years ago! Re: TC’s letter
Last week TC's letter raised a list of questions; but let's start with a basic one. Has the $750,000 + project solved the original problems of the Glass House retail and services precinct? Before I give my view, let me frame the situation: previously, the precinct had 'country town' central parking, largely achieved by painted lines on the road surface. Given an increasing mix of traffic and pedestrians, it was perceived by many but not all, to be getting too dangerous to stay that way. The solution produced was a new design that means traffic and pedestrians are much more formally managed in, out and around the precinct. So has it solved the problem? My answer is a qualified YES, but it has also created new problems. The most obvious and urgent problem is that while locals are beginning to adapt, many drivers are still turning around anywhere there's a space (e.g. u-turns in the entries to Turner or Ryan Lane). In my view, this confusion will be reduced if signage and road markings are appropriately added, particularly to lead traffic more safely from Bruce Parade into the main block of carparking which is also the way around and out of the precinct. I would like to acknowledge that the problems were significantly worse before locals quickly forced changes to the work as it was completed for the first time. There is a general feeling that this project should have achieved much more than it has. Glass House is still a real rural township that needs to cope well with the mix of larger farm vehicles, local residents and many first time visitors needing clear direction and easy access to the shops and amenities. However, the pressing challenge now is to fix the problems quickly and move onto the issue of the Reed Street intersection. Rick Baberowski Division 1 Candidate
Local not always the cheapest
I have just read a letter from S.Greaves (GCNews September 21) about how good shopping local is. To my surprise they mentioned Beerwah Pharmacy. Being a diabetic I am always shopping around for cheap medications as it becomes expensive. I do shop at Australia's Cheapest Chemist because that’s what they are. I did once have to get a prescription filled at Beerwah Pharmacy and shock horror it was $8.00 dearer. When I got home and checked I rang Beerwah Pharmacy only to be told they couldn't anything about it. Now all I have to do is ring my local Cheapest Chemist and they have my script filled for me when I get there. Now that is good service, and as I am always driving with work, it is worth it to stop there. I think the saying is once bitten twice shy. M. Robinson Landsborough www.gcnews.com.au

Carbon Tax for Rural Business: How will it affect you?
The potential future introduction of the Federal Government’s Carbon Tax has raised many a question from many parts of the community. Sunshine Coast Council wishes to invite farmers and other stakeholders in rural business to attend a free workshop to hear about how the Federal Clean Energy Future plan will affect rural businesses here on the Coast. Jointly organised by council and global carbon accounting specialist BDO, the workshop will take place on Wednesday, September 28, from 9.30am to 11.00am, at Nambour Civic Centre, Centenary Square, Currie Street, Nambour. Some of the topics covered will be: • An overview of the new Carbon Tax legislation • Practical applications of the Carbon Farming Initiative • New opportunities arising from the Carbon Farming Scheme • Real life case studies, and practical examples of how it could work for you I would strongly encourage residents with rural lands or interests to attend. To register your attendance at the workshop, please go to - http://www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=rural-futures-strategy2

At the beginning of this month relationships are likely to be harmonious as Venus is still in diplomatic Libra, but the intensity increases when she moves into Scorpio on Sunday, October 9, bringing a new depth and an allor-nothing quality to relationships. Meanwhile there is a fiery passion and enthusiasm for life shown by Mars in Leo. Both signs are loyal and steadfast, yet both can be very fixed in their nature and so can easily clash – this tension is likely to increase through the month and will reach a peak by the next New Moon on October 27. The Full Moon in Aries on Wednesday, October 12 highlights your ability to be assertive in your life, standing in your power as a warrior of one kind or another. With Saturn opposing this Full Moon, the warrior’s task is to stand up to external forces that seem to limit or thwart your ambitions. This Full Moon is likely to bring to fruition any project where you have been pioneering, creating

something very new, especially if you have had to work hard to overcome resistance or difficulties in the process. There can now be a sense of achievement as the project reaches completion. Check your birth chart to see which house is under the spotlight at 18 degrees Aries. This Full Moon is exact at 12.05pm AEST. The New Moon in Scorpio on Thursday, October 27 signals the beginning of a new cycle in terms of self-empowerment and relating to others in a deep and passionate way. The sign of Scorpio is associated with rebirth – or more accurately with all stages in the three-fold journey of transformation: death, the passage through the underworld and then the rebirth, rising like the phoenix from the ashes of the old self. Scorpio represents the capacity for intense transformation, and the Sun is in Scorpio until November 23. With love Chirone

Things 2 Do The Round Mountain Girls at Beerwah Hotel Northern Rivers based band, Round Mountain Girls, first ventured up this Chris E and Rabbit from RMG way last year to play the Caloundra Festival. A few weeks ago they made their Gympie Muster debut and now they’re coming north again to play at the Sunshine Coast’s home of country music; The Beerwah Hotel. The boys (they’re not really girls) are excited. If the reception they had at the festivals is anything to go by, it’s going to be a big night at Beerwah. If you caught them at Gympie you know that this band is not like any other band playing the circuit. If you think of a band playing mostly acoustic instruments and singing some great harmonies you would inevitably imagine a sort of laid back folk band… break out the blanket and cushions. Put away the cushions, these guys rock! Playing material from their two albums, a bit of classic bluegrass and Irish and some completely inappropriate rock songs beaten into shape with a banjo, RMG inevitably put on a party. And it’s a dance party! Whether it’s a laid back Sunday afternoon in a beer garden or a Saturday night in a room used to loud rock bands, every RMG gig always ends with a dance floor full of sweaty, smiling people yelling for more. The Round Mountain Girls are at the Beerwah Hotel on Saturday, October 8. Come and have some fun.
Graham Rodgers returns to Glass House Mountains If you missed out on seeing multi award winner Country Music Artist Graham Rodger last time he performed at Glass House Mountains then you’re in luck, he’s back for a one off concert at Glasshouse Mountains Community Hall 7.00pm on Saturday, October 15. The luck will continue for one GCNews reader as we have two free tickets to give-away. To enter send an email to reception@gcnews.com.au with the subject line to say 'Graham Rodgers tickets' and include your contact details . In 1998 Graham released his first album, ‘Steering Wheel Drovers’ and won his first award, the Gordon Parsons Memorial Award, the same year. Since then he has released eight albums, been a seven times Golden Guitars finalist and won 44 awards. The most recent includes Winner of The National Songwriting contest of Australia 2011, Winner of Songwriters Salute Award for Bush Ballad 2011 and Winner of People’s Choice Award for Bush Ballad 2011. Proudly presented by Glasshouse Mountains-Landsborough RSL Sub Branch and sponsored by KLM Energy Services, prepaid tickets are only $25.00 and includes a light supper. Glasshouse Mountains Community Hall is located at 8 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains. For more information or tickets phone 5438 7842 or 0427 335 933.

Rock’n’Roll at Family Fun Day Rock’n’roll tunes will fill the air with ‘City Limits’ playing at the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day, Sunday, October 16. The four-piece band played at the Fun Day last City Limits year, and they’re back by popular demand. “We had a great time last year and enjoyed the atmosphere and activities,” says band member Barry Back, who is also Mooloolah’s Post Master. Barry says while the members love music and enjoy playing, it’s always special to be part of community events. “We wouldn’t miss the Fun Day for anything,” he says. City Limits plays a mix of 50s, 60s and 70s classic hits, country music and instrumentals. Besides solid musicianship, the band is known for its vocals, especially its multi-part harmonies. Joining City Limits on the full-day entertainment program will be music and dance performances from the Mooloolah, Eudlo and Glenview State Schools plus Op Shop fashion parades, Deborah Dickson singing, Pete Foster’s rootsy tunes and a roaming accordion. Sparkles the Clown will also be coming for some fun in the sun. There will be lots of other fun entertainment for kids including the animal farm, pony rides, giant slide, jumping castles, dunking machine and face painting. There will be giveaways galore with prizes announced throughout the day at the giant raffle wheel and free plants. Stallholder spots open – free for community and $20.00 for businesses - bookings close October 5. This fun event is hosted by the Mooloolah Community Centre, Sunshine Coast Council and White’s IGA. So soak up the tunes and have some fun at the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day, 10.00am – 3.00pm, Sunday, October 16 at the Mooloolah Community Centre, 43 Bray Road, Mooloolah. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship
James Procter was raised in a Christian home and constantly heard the teachings of faith in God. But in his late teenage years he was influenced heavily by the growing wave of atheism and the theory of evolution, which began its rise in the late 1800’s. He renounced all interest in anything that had to do with faith and Jesus Christ. He later joined the Free Thinkers’ Society in Manchester, soon becoming its president. He spent most of his entire life trying to prove there was no God. Later in his old age James experienced a serious illness. Fearing that the end of his life was at hand, he one day requested his sister to send for a minister. A Pastor came to his bedside and helped Mr Procter to a saving faith in Christ. The illness took a turn for the better and he seemed to improve during his convalescence. He asked his sister to locate a piece of paper in his desk. She found it and then wrote down the words he dictated to her to complete a poem. Shortly before he died, he knew he’d found a peace and relationship with God. Eventually music was put to the words.
one (LT1). Next Buddies meeting in Sunday, October 23 in Buderim. For enquiries phone 5494 2240.
It is an incredible song of God’s grace to a man who spent so much of his life as an atheist. I’ve tried in vain a thousand ways, my fears to quell, my hopes to raise; But what I need, the Bible says, is ever, only Jesus. My soul is night, my heart is steel, I cannot see, I cannot feel; For light, for life, I must appeal in simple faith to Jesus. He died, He lives, He reigns, He pleads; There’s love in all His words and deeds; That’s all a guilty sinner needs, forevermore in Jesus. Tho some should sneer, and some should blame, I’ll go with all my guilt and shame; I’ll go to Him because His name, above all names, is Jesus. Psalm 14:1 says, ‘The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.’

See Laurie Evans Real Estate - page 24 Redraw Facilities Redraw facilities enable you to deposit any spare income you have directly into your home loan account. You can then redraw from the loan any funds that are in excess of your regular repayments. In terms of interest savings, a redraw facility has much the same effect as a 100% offset account. Offset vs redraw If a 100% offset account and a redraw facility have the same outcome in terms of savings, what are the advantages of one over the other? Because offset accounts are essentially savings accounts and operate as such, you’ll have easy access to your funds. Most come with an ATM, EFTPOS and cheque access, some offer phone banking and some even have a credit card. Transaction fees may be charged in the same manner as a standard savings account, but most lenders will waive transaction charges on
offset accounts altogether. Ideally, you can arrange to have all of your salary paid directly into the offset account. This ensures that any income not spent is being used to reduce the balance of your loan. While receiving the interest savings you have peace of mind in knowing that you can access your funds at any time. Some institutions will limit you to as few as two redraws per year. Others will charge you up to $50 per withdrawal. Look for a redraw facility that provides you with maximum flexibility at minimum cost. Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. Be sure to find out exactly how the loan’s redraw facility operates T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 before you sign up, because they’re www.smartline.com.au/tharrison Smartline CL No. 385325 not all the same. A 100% offset account will be a more attractive option than a restrictive or expensive redraw facility if you’re intending to use the account for day-to-day transactions.

Thom's A-Z of Gardening A is for Amorphophallus
Plants from the Amorphophallus genus are not commonly grown in the urban garden. Usually they are found in the care of plant collectors. They are a curio in the plant world, and rightly so. What puts common gardeners off these plants is that the flower is considered unattractive by some. They certainly come in some interesting shapes. Readers with some knowledge of Latin or access to the internet might like to decipher ‘Amorphophallus’ for a clue to how they can look. Another unusual feature is that when the flowers open they smell like rotting flesh or gas. The smell is generated in order to attract flies and other carrion insects which pollinate the flowers. While the flowers are producing the odour, they produce heat, with some species reaching the same temperature as a human body. Fortunately for growers, the smell only lasts for about 24 hours and the species with the strongest smells don’t flower every year. The 180 species of Amorphophallus originate throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, excepting the Americas. They are found in rich, well drained soils under the canopy of trees. The plant will store energy in a tuber close to the surface which will allow it to lay dormant over the cooler months. Ensure that the soil is dry during this period or lift the tubers for replanting in spring. Aside from the fascinating flowers, Amorphophallus leaves are a striking addition to shaded areas of the summer garden.

My favourite is the Amorphophallus paeoniifolius or Elephant Yam. The flower takes about a week to develop before opening and I cannot resist a daily visit to examine the velvety red spadix emerge from a spathe that resembles an Elizabethan ruffled collar. Some tubers are edible, though many are poisonous unless prepared correctly. The tuber of the Konjak is used to produce a firm, flavourless jelly in Japan, which is used in various savoury and sweet dishes. Select some of the easier to grow Amorphophallus and have a curio to discover in your garden.

A clever Scott
A Glasgow man walks into a bank in Glasgow and asks for the loan officer. He tells the loan officer that he is going to Australia on business for two weeks and needs to borrow £5,000. The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Glasgow lad hands over the keys and documents of new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the log book and everything checks out. The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank’s manager and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the rough looking Glaswegian for using a £120,000 Ferrari as collateral against a £5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives
the Ferrari into the bank’s underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the Glaswegian returns, repays the £5,000 and the interest, which comes to £15.41. The loan officer says, “sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi millionaire. What puzzles us is, why you would bother to borrow £5,000?” The Glaswegian replies, “where else in Glasgow can I park my car for two weeks for only £15.41 and expect it to be there when I return.” Submitted by Des, Landsborough
