i – it’s your new Editor here (Brownie) – there was a coup d'état last week and I’ve overthrown ‘Her Ladyship’. My first decree is that there will be a ‘Page 3 Girl’, starting next week … interested parties please send your application photos to me via the usual channels. As is my now dictatorial want, I decided to take my leave last Friday and have a leisurely wander through the Spring Orchid Spectacular in the Beerwah Community Hall. I must say, the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society once again excelled themselves. The quality of the blooms this year was exceptional, with the local Society bringing home a bevy of awards. Speaking with a range of people made me realise that the event attracts visitors from across South-East Queensland. I met one couple who had travelled down from Bundaberg. All these people of different ages, social upbringings and life histories were talking and conversing with each other, with the one commonality being that they thought orchids were pretty OK. And it made me think … special interest groups like the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society may seem antiquated to some, but in reality, they are a fabric of our community as they bring people together – locally and from far and wide. And that can’t be a bad thing in today’s increasingly narcissistic world. Editor’s note It will be business as usual next week and no I haven’t agreed to the antiquated concept of a Page 3 girl!

Introducing Maleny Food Co Popular Maleny business Colin James Fine Foods is at the beginning of an exciting new journey, beginning with a new name, Maleny Food Co. t ot Local residents Sc d Kate Norman an Norman and Kate Scott purchased the popular café and gelato manufacturing business from Colin and Jean Cunningham in 2015, and have been busy building on their foundation as well as planning a new vision for the future. “While the name will change, the values and what we stand for as a business will remain unchanged,” said Norman. Colin James Fine Foods was founded in 2001 by dairy industry veteran Colin Cunningham who perfected his gelato recipe using fresh Guernsey milk and cream from local producer Maleny Dairies. Over the years the café has gained a reputation for quality deli style dining, handmade gelato and sorbet and the famous walk-in fromagerie. The manufacturing facility is known for the production of their award winning gelato and sorbet for wholesale to scoop shops and restaurants. Norman and Kate are passionate about the region and believe Maleny Food Co will take the hard work of the previous owners to a new level.

“With a strong commitment to supporting our local community, we are focused on further growing our business while staying true to our core values and product offerings,” said Norman. “Working with Maleny Dairies we will continue to expand the production and distribution of our gelato and sorbet through scoop shops, gourmet grocers and restaurants and in doing so, build a strong and sustainable dairy industry in Maleny.” The new name Maleny Food Co will help to strengthen the effort to raise the profile of Maleny and the Hinterland region as the location for a wide array of quality food production and food tourism. Over the next year, the famous café and gelato shop will move to larger premises on Maple Street creating more space for the retail, café and fromagerie business. With a focus on showcasing local produce customers will know where their food is from and the story behind many of the producers. “We envision a comfortable space for locals and tourists to enjoy coffee, a light meal and our award winning gelato allowing the authentic quality of the food to speak for itself,” said Kate. The café menu will make a gradual change to incorporate even more local produce, with a focus on provenance and education about all Maleny has to offer.

Although we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Kev's price for the supply and install of our cabinets was very competitive with another well known installer supplier, it was his attention to detail that particularly impressed us. He made several visits to our home to confirm measurements and liaise with other tradesmen, thus ensuring seamless installation of the kitchen. When it came to the actual installation, Kev's staff were professional, helpful and prepared to go out of their way to ensure delivery of a quality product. His after sales service was also spot on – thanks Kev for our dream kitchen! John and Jill Cameron, Beerwah

Mark McArdle said he was very concerned that Suncorp has moved to close their Branch in Beerwah with no public consultation. “The only notification that customers of the bank received of the branch closing was by a letter dated 14 September. It provided no reasons as to why it was happening only directing them to other services,” Mr McArdle said*. “It is very disappointing that Suncorp, who prides itself on service delivery can calmly inform customers their doors are closing. “There are many older people in Beerwah who do not have, nor do they wish to have, access to a computer or modern technology for many reasons. They are being ignored and neglected,” he said. “These are the same clients that Suncorp rely upon to generate good will. That is now thrown out the window. “Indeed business operators will also be affected. They could hold multiple accounts with Suncorp covering their business and homes. What is to happen to them? They are now required to transfer their business operations to someone else. “During the day they may have reason to call into Suncorp Beerwah for cash for their float or to bank the days proceeds. “I met with Suncorp on Thursday to discuss why, without any consultation, they were shutting their doors in Beerwah on the 14th October. “During the conversation, I was told that Suncorp ‘tried to do the right thing by its customers’ and ‘the customer is very important to us’ but they

could not explain that if that was the case, why they had taken no steps to engage with their customers before closing Beerwah,” Mr McArdle said. In fact, I said their actions and their words were ‘irreconcilable’ to which I was again given the same platitudes. “The only point of any real movement was when I was told that Suncorp was ‘investigating’ keeping an ATM in Beerwah. “This, I assume will be deemed a victory by Suncorp for their former customers. “I was also told that ATMs at Maleny, Pelican Waters and Nambour were only a ‘relatively small distance’ from Beerwah. “I don’t know about you but the distance from Beerwah to Pelican Waters takes up to 45 minutes one way and in traffic up to an hour. “I’d hardly call that a relatively small distance. “The conversation I felt was more like Suncorp just going through the motions, and when I asked about the emotional impact the closure would have, there was nothing by way of an explanation. “Similarly, they could not explain to me why public consultation in Beerwah had not taken place, simply referring to the fact that they are looking at a ‘broader distribution’ strategy and how they would provide ‘value’ to customers. “If value means closing down branches, disappointing clients and turning their backs on clients’ loyalty, Suncorp and I differ as to the definition of the word ‘value’,” Mr McArdle concluded.

Hinterland shines in Community Awards Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has congratulated the Glass House Hinterland for their outstanding representation in the 2016 Caloundra Electorate Community Awards. Three winners of the eight categories were from the Hinterland and they scooped up the following awards: • Business Achiever of the Year, Australian Off-Road (Steve and Rhonda Budden of Mooloolah Valley) • Community Event of the Year, Beerwah Charity Sports Day • Sport Achiever of the Year, Jade Dean of Mooloolah Valley. Australian Off-Road have been building reliable and strong camper trailers and caravans for more than 16 years. What started as a one-man operation in a garage has transformed into an 80-strong workforce in a purpose built 5,500m2 factory and showroom on the Sunshine Coast. This year they were announced Camper Trailer of the Year by Quantum Series IV. “We’ve been in business for many years plugging away and sell all Around Australia and are very thankful for this,” Mr Budden said. Beerwah Charity Sports Day was recognised for their tremendous contribution and fundraising efforts to the Cancer Council. “Some of our members have been working on this event for 45 years … you don’t achieve that success without supporting the local community,”

Beerwah Charity Sports Day Chairman Bruce Page said. Jade Dean was crowned Sport Achiever of the Year for her 20 years as a soccer player with the Sunshine Coast Churches Association and was the first female player to gain such recognition. “I’d really like to thank my family for introducing me to the sport of soccer and the community for allowing me to play this great sport,” Ms Dean said. Caloundra MP Mark McArdle said the awards, now in its fourth year, amazed him every year with the depth and breadth of talent nominated. “These Awards are about recognising the best of the best in our community and I am continually inspired by the people whose names are thrown in the ring.”

A special place we call home People from across the globe come to Maleny and District to make this special place their home. This year 109 newcomers to the area came to the 11th annual Welcome Dinner, hosted by the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, to meet local residents, community groups and businesses and to make new friends. A total of 208 people attended the dinner and enjoyed a gourmet buffet provided by Tranquil Park Restaurant. On arrival, local musician and songster Tommy Leonard entertained the guests while they mingled and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres. MC for the evening, Lion Clarke Alexander, opened the proceedings and introduced the prize winning ‘Song of Maleny’, written by David Crewe, which was played to a captive audience.

Discover the fascinating Beerburrum Soldier Settlement story Join Denis Hare, BEM (British Empire Medal), to discover the fascinating story of the Beerburrum Soldier Settlement Scheme from 1.30pm 3.30pm on Friday, October 7 at Beerwah Library. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Beerburrum settlement and Denis Hare will set the scene by providing some insights into, and a greater appreciation of, the hardship experienced by the ex-soldiers and their families who lived at the settlement up to a century ago. The settlement was an Australian Commonwealth Government funded, Queensland State Government administered effort to provide land to repatriated servicemen who had served in the First Australian Imperial Force (1AIF) and other Imperial armed forces during World War I. More than 500 ex-soldiers received land grants and the scheme was formally closed in 1929. The hardship, poor soil, poor advice and assistance, plus their own illness from war service, was just too much and many just walked away from their holding. By 1936 only 36 remained working the land. This is a free event however bookings are essential as light refreshments will be provided. Denis Hare served 23 years in the Australia Army, which included war service in South Vietnam. He is the author of the web based book

Africa in the pink

Contributed by Amy-Jean Pope Glass House Mountains State School has been developing an arts extension option over the last couple of years. With this year’s Production, ‘Africa in the Pink’, it is clear to see that the school community has grown and created an enriched environment for our students to explore. Each class at Glass House Mountains State School worked towards creating an African atmosphere for the audience by designing artworks for the walls of the hall and props for the stage. Supportive and talented parents worked to create the backdrops, the set, the props, the choreography of the dances, the costumes and the hair and face paint of the students. They helped with running lines, at intermission with refreshments and settling the cast backstage in the temporary green room. The community buzz was exciting, positive and beneficial to the success of the performances that the cast had been working towards. ‘Africa in the Pink’ written by classroom teacher Amy-Jean Pope depicted the message that you should always value your worth and love who you are. It was presented with comedic tones and a colourful cast of African animals and tribes who took any opportunity to burst into the songs written by the schools Head of Curriculum, Rob Armstrong. There were 24 flamingos, 24 Tribes people, eight Meerkats, seven Lemurs, seven Antelopes, five Porcupines, three Lion Cubs, two Otters, one Chameleon, one Cheetah and a crew of 16

Of course the story had to have some villains, so we were also introduced to a Boa Constrictor named Babs and her three Baboon Bandits. Over two terms the students at Glass House Mountains State School built skills in the areas of public speaking, drama, singing and dancing and visual arts. For eight weeks in term three, teachers Amy-Jean Pope, Denise Sammut, Tracey Blake, Madeline Hair, Robert Armstrong and Sue Maloney and the whole cast and crew (made up of over 100 students) worked towards an opening night on Thursday, September 1. Their final performance was Friday, September 2 and was a very proud moment for teachers, parents and students alike. That’s a wrap for 2016 but our thoughts are already in process for the next arts venture for Glass House Mountains State School. Stay tuned.

Health promotion officer Deb Zammit said the mobile service helped to improve access to this valuable service for local women. “October is a good time to remind women about their breast health and this important health check,” Ms Zammit said. “We understand women lead busy lives and it can be difficult to make time to attend regular health checks. This is why it’s important that we ensure our services are as accessible as possible. “Having our mobile service in more locations can help make it more convenient for women to squeeze an appointment into their day. We also provide some early and late appointments and ensure all services are wheelchair friendly,” she said. A breast screen, or screening mammogram, is used to detect small changes in the breast tissue before they can be felt or noticed. Having a breast screen every two years is strongly recommended for women aged between 50 and 74 as this is the age group where the benefits of breast screening are most evident. Women without breast cancer symptoms are eligible to attend this free service from the age of 40. A doctor’s referral is not required. A permanent BreastScreen service is also located at The Lakes Centre, King Street Caboolture and at Caloundra Hospital. Eligible women can book an appointment at their preferred location, phone 13 20 50.

Maleny Commerce Update With Spencer Shaw

Beerwah’s Aussie Christmas seek sponsors

This year we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the formation of the Maleny and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry. We will be holding a birthday dinner on November 24 at Pomodoras on Obi and are looking forward to celebrating the good businesses at the heart of our great little town. Past and present members are all invited and it will be a great opportunity to catch-up and network. Over the last 30 years Maleny Commerce has promoted and represented our members, the wider business community and the Maleny Community as a whole. Small towns like Maleny thrive because of the energy, creativity and input of individuals and community, often this requires hard work over a long period of time. I enjoy catching up with the long term business people in our town to discuss our town’s progress and I also think it’s important to acknowledge the contributions of past and current committee members who volunteer or have volunteered their time to promote good business in Maleny. So thank you one and all for making a contribution to our town. Sometimes we can all rejoice in a job well done with recent examples including our Networking Breakfasts, Welcome signs, the Maleny Street Christmas Carnival, Hinterland Finance and Sustainability Expo, and Meet the Candidate Events etc. Sometimes we can also be faced with the slow pace of change with issues such as improving the parking situation for residents and tourists alike… Our next networking breakfast is at Spicers Tamarind where we get to view this year’s Sculpture on the Edge Exhibition, with guest speakers from Arts Connect. This event is on Tuesday, October 11 and you can book through our web page at www.malenycommerce.org.au Keep up the good business, Maleny.

This year’s Community Christmas Carols will be held on Saturday, December 17 with preshow entertainment starting at 4.30pm, Carols from 6.30pm and finishing with fireworks at 8.00pm at the Beerwah Sportsground. Based on last year’s estimate, the organisers are expecting a crowd of about 3,000 people (weather permitting!). Event co-ordinator Jenny Broderick said while the Sunshine Coast Council are their proud major sponsors for this event, they would also love to offer the opportunity for our local businesses to be involved. All funds raised goes towards paying for artists, staging, sound, lighting and fireworks. “We know sponsorship is about relationship and has to work for everyone, so we’ve put together a range of packages from $250.00 to $2,000.00 which will help promote our local businesses over the Christmas period. “Or should you have other customised suggestions for sponsorship packages within the pricing guidelines, we are happy to discuss those options with you,” Jenny said. For further information, or to offer your support, please contact Jenny Broderick production@glasshousecountrycarols.com or phone 0419 217 042 or via the Glasshouse Country Community Carols Facebook page.

He proudly accepted the certificate in the presence of family members, including both his daughters. Naturally he was suitably dressed in his Alpini uniform. A convivial afternoon coffee and cake followed the presentation. For those who know him, it will come as no surprise that Albert is a favourite Albert reading his RSL Centenary Certificate at Beerwah, probably has (without read ing glasses) which was presented something to do with his by Mr Ken Smith a Welfare Support Member Italian heritage? Albert thanked the RSL sub-branch and wished to be remembered to all his friends in Maleny.

Beerwah Lions in September Minor bus timetable change for qconnect routes 890, 891 and 892 On Tuesday 4 October, there will be minor timetable changes for routes: •

890 Maleny to Nambour

891 Maleny to Landsborough

892 Landsborough to Beerwah.

These changes are due to the opening of the new Redcliffe Peninsula line and changes to train timetables on the Sunshine Coast line. To maintain and improve your train connections, routes 890, 891 and 892 will have minor timetable adjustments – meaning your bus may arrive or depart earlier or later than it currently does. There will be no other changes to these services. Pick up a copy of your new timetable by contacting Glasshouse Country Coaches on 5496 9249. Please check your new timetable prior to travelling to avoid missing your bus. For more information, please visit qconnect.qld.gov.au or call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

Contributed by Bob Banner At a well attended September dinner meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club, President Charles Farran was pleased to welcome back the four Lions who’d spent time at Quilpie, volunteering their time to assist with the building of the Dingo Fence, which when completed will stretch for more than 300 kilometres. Lion Alistair Waddell spoke of the property they worked on, quoting that a grazier in the region had recently released a flock of three hundred sheep, only to find 30 of them killed overnight. The fence will help confine the Dingoes as well as Emues and Goats. Guest speaker for the evening was well known local Chiropractor Doctor Braxton Turnage. Braxton spoke of the increase in various types of chronic illness and the need for people to get back to basics with food. A lot of people consider themselves healthy, just because they don’t happen to be sick at the moment, he said. Health he said is something we need to invest in, both with time and money, we need to encourage physical fitness, it’s a good way to keep illness at bay.

Feeling Fruity Here at Forest Heart we’re all about creating diverse native gardens using local native plants and restoring our wider landscape through revegetation. Not only does this benefit us through the feel good factor and enjoying the amazing beauty of our local native plants, it also gives us the opportunity to share our lives with the amazing local native flora and fauna that have called this land home since time immemorial and hopefully with our input, into the future! So what exotic plants could we plant, that could possibly benefit native vegetation? My thoughts are that food bearing plants such as fruit trees certainly fit the bill, because by growing food yourself we then require less clearing of native vegetation elsewhere to produce the food we require. However, I would also offer the following comments of caution. Do the exotic food bearing plants have any weed potential? For example, Coffee, Curry Leaf, Brazilian Cherry and Cherry Guava have all shown weed potential in certain situations. Also protecting your fruit trees from wildlife can also have its problems not only for you but for the wildlife, through poorly designed and installed fruit nets trapping and injuring animals and the use of poisons such as insecticides or rodenticides having widespread negative impacts. Forest Heart has a great range of fruit and nut trees that can help you grow your own food, with a focus on non-invasive exotic food plants and advice on reducing your impact on local wildlife, which is a win-win for everybody.

Environment Shedding new light on a smart future

The Sunshine Coast will become a pioneer for public lighting under a new recent master plan endorsed by council. The Urban Lighting Master Plan (ULMP) will see Sunshine Coast Council become the first local government in Australia to deploy LED lighting across its entire region. Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Stephen Robinson said the ULMP supported council’s vision to be the most sustainable region in Australia: vibrant, green and diverse. “This project will make our council the first in Australia to deploy LED lighting across the entire region including major and minor roads; use street lighting controls to provide the foundation for the Smart City vision; redesign public lighting on every roadways and deliver the lowest energy usage per kilometre of roadway through the use of high performance LED, innovative design and smart controls. “The 27,000 street lights on the Sunshine Coast cost council around $4.6 million last financial year and that represents 56% of council’s total electricity costs,” Cr Robinson said. “Street lighting also consumes more than a third of council’s total energy usage. Cr Robinson said the ULMP detailed upgrade plans for 27 locations across the region and would deliver energy savings of around 50%. “It incorporates a hybrid networking solution that enables the delivery of Smart City Framework services across low, medium and broadband capacity across the Coast. The key benefit of investing in a hybrid bandwidth network would be the cost efficiencies of undertaking the installation simultaneously to LED conversion and accelerating the timeframe for the deployment of smart city initiatives to the broader region which may otherwise take over a decade to deliver. “The Plan also incorporates a centralised management system to enable defect detection and reporting, scheduled and on-demand dimming, energy metering, asset performance and maintenance history tracking.

with Sue Tanner If you have visited or driven by the rainforest recently you will have noticed how quickly the buildings are taking shape. The roof structure will be going up this week and the block work will be starting on the rainforest discovery centre, it’s certainly moving along rapidly thanks to some dry weather. School holidays are here again and despite the building work, visitors are streaming in, keeping our vollies on their toes. The Friends have a new colouring-in pack for sale with pictures of some native animals and a small box of pencils which might keep some little fingers busy while waiting for the barbecue or on the way home. These are great value at only $5.00. I was really pleased to attend a ‘Thank You’ function at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Thursday last week at the Innovation Centre to thank donors of scholarships, bursaries and prizes and to meet the recipients. I had been lucky enough to meet our recipient, Ryan Newis, earlier in the year, and it was wonderful to hear how well his research has been progressing and how much our scholarship money has helped his work. He will come to the first meeting in the New Year and present his findings. The Friends will hold their AGM on Saturday, October 15 in the Verandah Room at the Community Centre – hopefully the last one away from the rainforest. We are still looking for a secretary, not an onerous task, just some minute taking and sending, please give it a thought. You Said It Seeking information

I am seeking information regarding my cousin Kenneth MCGREGOR (DOB 6 August 1948 in Sydney). In June 1999 he opened a nursery called ‘The Old Landsborough Nursery’ at 77 Caloundra Street, Landsborough. (This property is now the Transportable Shade Shed business). I believe he passed away somewhere between 2004 and 2006. If you knew Kenneth and may be able to assist with providing information about him or his daughter Tracey then I would appreciate it if you could contact me via email bbridge42@hotmail.com Bob Bridgewood Sydney

Dogs off lead?

I'm just wondering is this just a problem out in Peachester? Why do some people still walk their dogs off the lead? It's dangerous to other people who do the right thing and have their dogs on a lead and under control. If your dog attacks someone or someone’s dog when it's off the lead, are you prepared to pay the cost for the vet bills etc? The fines for not having your dog on a lead are quite expensive so do the right thing and keep your dog under control on a lead. It makes life a lot easier for everyone. Is it too much to ask for balance between strong vegetation laws and sustainable farming? It is only necessary to talk with farmers, the producers of our food, here on the Sunshine Coast or in far flung parts of Queensland, to understand the worry they

They already struggle to comply with costs of safety regulations applying to food production without having to cope with the imposition of criminalising restrictions contained in vegetation laws, based quite frequently, on inaccurate government mapping and misidentification of plants. Life is hard enough for people on the land, many battling intermittent drought or flooding rain and constant isolation, far-distant from social, educational and health facilities. They often wonder if they can continue to make such huge family sacrifices for the love of their country. To all those people who would make production of food so much harder for Australian farmers, from where would you choose to import your food in future? Would it be from a country which has no regulations re food production, such as those imposed on our producers, requiring the safe application of insecticides, fungicides, etc? I suggest to Gillian Pechey, Libby Malter (GC&M News, September 7 and 14) and Jacquie Trad (C Mail, September 17) and their supporters, that they recognise that the impositions and threats proposed Vegetation Laws would place on farmers could drive them out of production and thereby force us to import our daily food requirements. Compliance with requirements of the proposed vegetation law contains huge potential costs to land holders. A reasonable approach is needed for balanced protection of our natural vegetation and animals and a sensible, understanding and caring attitude to our hard-working food producers – lest we find they are becoming an extinct species. NBN Towers and wildlife

Concern was raised on the letters page of the last issue of GC&M News about the effect of electromagnetic radiation on local wildlife and humans. Let's just take a deep breath and look at some facts here. The letter writer quoted Dr Albert Manville, who is a retired biologist, not a man who is qualified to comment on microwave radiation or physics. His complaint that ‘we just don't know enough’ about the effects of mobile phone towers could be applied to many areas of modern life. What we DO know is that

there is no replicated research that shows damage to wildlife at the levels of radiation these towers use, in fact quite the contrary. The issue of ‘DNA damage’ relates only to radiation that is experienced in close proximity, such as a mobile phone pressed against the head, which has nothing to do with transmission towers that send a signal thousands of times weaker (by the time it reaches you). Even with very close radiation like a phone, the issue is very equivocal, with research not showing any clear trends. Are we going to say "no" to NBN towers because some people have vague and unsubstantiated fears about supposedly as yet unknown effects on wildlife? Bear in mind that we already have such towers for our beloved mobile phones, and wildlife is thriving near these towers (and thousands of these towers are already located right in amongst our homes across Australia and the world). In fact, you can see wildlife nesting in transmission towers. Here's a video of eagles living on a NBN-type tower: https://youtu. be/55glWmgYi9k If we say "no" to NBN towers, we will condemn the Hinterland to slow internet, with all the commercial, medical and educational disadvantages that will bring in time. Our real estate values will suffer because a good NBN connection is becoming a must-have feature for families. Do we want our homes to be worth less, just because of vague fears about technology? It's time to sober up about the NBN and stop stonewalling the arrival of vital modern infrastructure in our communities. Gerry Muller Maleny

Jonny and Jenny have a $350,000 home loan with an interest rate of 4.95% and a loan term of 30 years. Let’s do a comparison... Paying monthly $1,868.19 Loan term 30 years Total cost of loan $672,550.20 Total interest payable $322,550.20 Paying weekly $467.00 (monthly total divided by 4 & paid every week of the year) Loan term would decrease to 25 years 4 months Total cost of loan would decrease to $613,417.00 Total interest payable would decrease to $263,417.00

SEPTEMBER 28 2016

The savings: Loan term decreases to 25 years, 4 months, interest payable would decrease by $59,133.20. That is an incredible saving! At the end of each week or fortnight if you have money left over in your budget put it onto your loan. Even if it is only $10, that can save you over $10,000 in interest. By giving up two bought coffees a week you have saved that $10 to put onto your loan. Throw your spare change into a jar and at the end of each month put it onto your loan. Every bit helps to lower the term and interest payable on the loan. While these examples are on your home loan the same applies for any loans you have. You will feel empowered just by making little bits of extra payments here and there. When you get into the habit you start challenging yourself to see if you can put more on each month. Before you know the loan is paid out. Want help? Come and see us or give us a call on 5499 8988. Have a great week. Nicole

Cancer rates rising

The UK charity Children with Cancer recently announced that there are now 1,300 more cancer cases a year among children compared with pre 2000 figures. The rise in cancer is most apparent in teenagers and young adults aged between 15 and 24. The incident rate has risen from 10 cases in 100,000 to near 16. Researchers say that although some of the rise can be explained by cancer diagnoses improvements and more screening, the majority is most likely caused by environmental factors. Dr Denis Henshaw, Professor of Human Radiation Effects at Bristol University, scientific adviser for Children with Cancer UK, said air pollution was by far the biggest culprit, accounting for 40% of the rise, but aspects of modern lifestyles are also to blame. They include obesity, pesticides and solvents inhaled during pregnancy, circadian rhythm disruption through too much bright light at night (computers and smart phones), radiation from x-rays and CT scans, smoking during and after pregnancy, magnetic fields (EMF/EMR) from power lines, electronic gadgets in homes and from mobile phones. More than 4,000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer each year in Britain, and cancer is the leading cause of death in children aged one to 14 ( their website - http://www.childrenwithcancer. org.uk/childhood-cancer-awareness-month ). In Australia each year 950 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer (AIHW, 2015). The excessive use of chemical poisons in agriculture and in food, smoking in the home with young children, the use of toxic cleaning agents in homes and schools combined with the excessive exposure to microwave equipment in homes and schools in general, plus the explosion of smart phones and WiFi devices - identified by Dr Henshaw above - indicates continuing cancer rate increases for children. Why do we continue to allow this disease to expand in children when our own lifestyles are clearly now responsible for these increased disease rates? Richard Giles Conondale

Reinforces the nonsense

It is disappointing to read Libby Malter’s letter to the editor (GC&M News, September 14 edition) because it simply reinforces the nonsense of the Greens without any regard for those that produce our food and create jobs. With the LNP policies on land clearing, there was actually a 30% decrease in land clearing overall and a corresponding 9% increase in food production for our state. The Greens/Labor laws reverse the onus of proof, make it harder to feed ourselves and destroy rural jobs. Our state has the nation’s highest unemployment rate. Yet, still the Greens support ideas that would make it even harder for farming communities to make a living and support their families. Our farmers deserve common sense and fair laws to manage their land and increase productivity. The Greens even oppose the much-needed upgrade of the Bruce Highway Caloundra intersection! I totally agree with the ex PM Paul Keating’s quote ‘The Greens are a bunch of opportunistic trots, hiding behind gum trees.’ Greg Newton Balmoral Ridge

Simple minds

To the individual or individuals on Saturday night, September 17 who thought that it would be fun to drive up on the footpath along Pine Camp Road and Pine View Road, Beerwah in their car and destroy the newly planted trees and street signs. The old saying, small things amuse small minds, well, how true. We don't want this type of activity in our community, so bugger off and find somewhere else to play. I hope one day that you might be a rate payer, but I doubt that very much, with your lack of mentality. Trevor Watts Beerwah

Is it profit before people?

Heritage Bank have announced the closure of the Heritage Beerwah Newsagency mini branch agency on November 16. The bank has cited 'progress of technology and the rapid decline in transactions where only 1.2% of customer transaction are now performed in Heritage mini branches.' We have ANZ, Westpac, Commonwealth and BOQ banks in Beerwah, so I am rather sceptical of the Heritage Bank's claims. Looks like the Heritage bank is getting others like Australia Post and other banks ATMs to do their work. Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Peachester and Landsborough are growing areas; some with new subdivisions. Heritage have lost the opportunity to expand alongside these areas. There is a loss of business to the Beerwah Newsagency. It’s disappointing considering the effort and good will they have put into setting up the agency and from all reports they were doing very well from the business. The Heritage Bank also cite 'After much deliberation'. I don't think there was much deliberation, looks like the slogan 'People First' should be replaced with 'People Last' especially in our local areas. I don’t recall any local consultation? I can see the other Banks welcoming disillusioned Heritage customers. I can remember when Heritage Building Society as it was called then had a main branch in Toowoomba and a branch in Gatton. I suppose expansion comes at a cost and usually these types of cost cutting manoeuvres come as a result of a new type of management more focused on profit. After some 24 years with Heritage I will need to assess my position. People First would appear to be somewhat of a myth. Bernard Heal Glass House Mountains

Local hospitality

Today I came home to find a note on my front door. Immediately I wondered who the hell had I stood up? Well I hadn't forgotten anything or anyone. I had a lady come from Maroochydore looking for me. No my luck hadn’t changed! I have a hobby where I restore old bicycles which are donated free to those who need a helping hand. I fix these from my pile of spare parts. She had seen my ad on gumtree.com.au for free bikes previously. The ad hasn't run for six weeks now. She took the chance to get a lift and come to Glass House and track me down. She asked at the newsagency and then asked Kelvin at Glass House Property Sales how to find me. Of course I was out at work. Therefore, she left a note and I ended up calling her when I came home and told her to come and get the only bike I have. It's a purple ladies cruiser. This is number 174 I have restored since November 2015. What an amazing experience for this to happen. Gayle's trip wasn't wasted after all. Ross Parks Glass House Mountains

Two keys to strong bones: Calcium and Vitamin D

with Braxton Turnage Although bone-weakening osteoporosis is quite common among older people, it isn't an inevitable part of aging. There's a lot you can do to shield your bones from this disease. The best insurance against osteoporosis is building the highest bone density possible by your 30s and minimising bone loss after that. But if you're already in midlife or beyond, there is still much you can do to preserve the bone you have and perhaps even to replace lost bone. Daily weight-bearing exercise, like walking, is the best medicine. Getting enough calcium and vitamin D are two other critical strategies for keeping bones strong. Exercise Our body is extremely intelligent, and is constantly adapting to the world around us. One way our body adapts is to grow in areas of increased strain. For instance, if you want your muscles to grow, lift weights on a regular basis and the body will respond by giving you larger muscles.

Another example is the development of calluses on hands that do lots of shovelling, sweeping, etc to make the skin strong enough to handle the stress. Likewise, you can grow your bones by placing them under stress each day. Activities such as walking, lifting weights and body weight exercise will do the job. Swimming is not as effective at increasing bone density because your bones are under less stress in the water. Swimming remains a great exercise, especially if you are suffering from arthritic joints, but it is not the best option to increase bone density. Calcium and Vitamin D If you eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fish, fruits and vegetables, you should get enough of the nutrients you need every day. But if you’re not getting the recommended amount from food alone, you may need to complement your diet by taking multivitamins or supplements. If you aren’t getting enough calcium in your diet, your body can steal calcium from your bones for use in other bodily functions. Thirty minutes of sunshine on bare skin twice per week is recommended to allow your body to produce its own natural Vitamin D.

This reseller is on Fire!

Move over tough mudder here’s ‘Tough Borough’ Contributed by Kylie Merola

Business feature No matter what industry you work in, there are always opportunities to out there to seek a better lifestyle for you and your family, earn additional revenue and help secure your future. Michael Furlong is a great example of an established professional wanting an additional small business venture that will fit in around his current work commitments. By becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller, Michael enjoys the autonomy of his own business confident that he will receive full assistance by the team at Transportable Shade Sheds to answer questions and provide product information support if required. This confidence is also backed up by the extensive online marketing and mentoring platform Saver6.com that is provided to resellers – the complete support package is similar to what you would get if you joined a franchise operation but without the restrictive fees and requirements involved in that type of business mode. As a Transportable Shade Shed Business owner – you are your own boss! With a background in community service work, Michael has spent over 15 years as a fire fighter. As a long-term Fire Fighter; the nature of his work means that while Michael works a regular shift roster it allows him time to pursue other business interests when he is not fighting fires. One of the key points in becoming a reseller that appealed to him was to be involved in a self managed business that offered a change of pace and a viable interest different to his usual line of work. Living on acreage around the Port Macquarie area, Michael was open to additional revenue opportunities and put in a fair amount of research and due diligence before making the decision to become a reseller. In establishing Coast 2 Country shade sheds, he was impressed firstly with the quality of the Australian steel product as well as the huge potential to sell in the district. Living in a semi-rural coastal area with a large population of retirees, Michael could see the product growth potential in selling to those who needed caravan and boat covering, as well as more acreage motivated sales such as animal shelters for horses and livestock and well as all weather covering for rural supplies and equipment. He and his wife were also attracted to the possibility of building the business up into a main income provider down the track which offered better family lifestyle opportunities. “I am really happy to have become a reseller. I get control over the business and you are very well supported without it being a franchise. This keeps the capital on your side while you build the business and the team at Transportable Shade Sheds are always there to offer support if I ever need it,” said Michael. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Port Macquarie area please contact Michael via social media or on 0414 727 847. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at business option that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Please call Michael Furlong, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

SEPTEMBER 28 2016

Sounds of upbeat music, accompanied by delighted screams and cheering, echoed from the oval at Landsborough State School on the last day of term 3. It was all for a good cause as students were participating in ‘Tough Borough’, a Fun Run organised by the school’s P&C Association. Students collected sponsorship donations to support the school and then completed an obstacle style course set up on the oval. There were tyres, hay bales, army nets, tunnels, pools of coloured water, a huge slip and slide, foam, mud and coloured powder. Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade were also there to hose the students with their fire hoses each time they ran past. Acting Principal, Brendan Bopf, explained how Tough Borough is not just a fundraiser. “It is so much more than that. It builds self-esteem and school spirit. Students are out there having fun with their friends, fellow students and teachers. It’s a chance for everyone to let their hair down and celebrate together. It’s just a great overall experience for everyone involved,” he said. A total of $11,938.23 was collected in sponsorship donations, a phenomenal result! This figure reflects what a great local community we have. The school would like to thank all the sponsors for their generosity and to the Fun Run team for their hard work and dedication. All profits will be used to purchase exciting new Digital Technology Resources for the enjoyment of every student.

Operation Christmas Child Contributed by Nicole Kranz The Mooloolah State School are getting prepared for the annual Operation Christmas Child - shoebox appeal. This involves the kids at Mooloolah taking a shoebox and filling it with specific types of goodies. The boxes are then sent to children living in poverty, each box has a unique tracking number so the kids can see exactly whose life they have brightened. People from the community are also welcome to fill a box or make donations of goodies to go into the boxes. To find out more about the program, take a look www.samaritanspurse.org.au/occ

Culinary skills expanding Contributed by Fiona Wild Over the past few weeks, Year 4 students at Beerwah State School have been discussing and investigating traditional and modern methods in food preparation technology. The students have developed and extended their culinary skills when slicing, dicing and chopping with knives, as well as grating, whisking and blending. These skills have come together when the children have been creating their menus… like roasted sweet potato salad, zucchini and feta fritters and frozen peach yoghurt. Beerwah QCWA members, Deb, Kirsty and Robyn, have provided support and guidance in assisting the students with their term’s work – as well as a tasty frittata recipe. www.gcnews.com.au

Wedding

Tying the knot Hindu style

Not all couples are looking for the same type of wedding ceremony experience, so when we saw some of the lovely photos on Facebook of Craig and Leanda Harmer from Healthy Guru in Beerwah, we were keen to learn more about their beautiful wedding ceremony. When did you get married? February 14, this year. Yes, we know a little corny but just so happens that it worked out that way. Where was your wedding? Rishikesh India – it’s a beautiful town on the foot hills of the Himalayan mountains. Most known in the West for where the Beatles stayed in the maharishi’s ashram. For us though we choose Rishikesh for it is such a magic place that embraces all types of yoga and the energy of Ganga river (known as the spiritual mother of India) is at its most purest. What was involved in your ceremony? We started the morning with a dip in the Ganga River – now to paint a picture. This river is running so fast and is at 10 degrees and 6.00am in the Himalayans (this was a very quick dip) this isn’t tradition but it represents purification. We then had a cleansing ceremony call a Haldi ceremony. We were painted in a paste made of turmeric, sandalwood, and rose water. The paste serves as a cleanser for the body and soul and signifies the bride and groom’s preparation and welcoming into married life. The main ceremony took close to three hours and was just the most amazing intimate experience we could have asked for. It started with us meeting in a common area all dressed up, we walked down to the Ganga with a three-piece band. Our guests consisted of two close friends from Deli India and close to 12 others from their friends and people we met through the hotel.

Guide We exchanged flower garlands and had a series of traditions that completed the ceremony. These included Vivaha-homa, (havan) where the sacred fire is lit across from the bride and groom. Gath Bandhan - the bride's chuney is tied to her groom's scarf as a symbol of their union. Saptapadi - the bride and groom take seven steps and make seven laps around the havan together while reciting a vow for each. Surya Darshanand Dhruva Darshan - they look to the sun to seek blessings for a creative and passionate life together. Could you have had a similar ceremony in Australia? If yes, would it have been as good? Yes of course you can, cultural weddings happen in Australia all the time. It really doesn’t matter where you get married as long as it represents what your union means to you. What was it that you loved most about the day? The ceremony was a Hindu ceremony yet we are not Hindu. The reason why we chose this type of ceremony was because it involves a spiritual connection between us. Our birth charts were produced by the priest prior to the ceremony day, this is so the ceremony was structured around our astrological connection. This means the vows, the prayers, the mantras and all the rituals are designed for supporting our life together in the harmonist way. What advice would you give to other couples about to plan their weddings? The whole idea of getting married is to share in a union with each other. Little details that are causing you big headaches are not worth the worry. We didn’t plan any colours, ceremony set up or music, we even chose our outfits only the day before. We had faith the day was going to be perfect and it was.

Guide At last a wedding story that’s all about the men… well, mostly! There are a few things harder or more daunting than a man proposing to the love of his life, especially when expectations are high that the moment will be unique and memorable. Well, a solution is at hand. Meet Poppy. Poppy is a perky, poppy-red Citroën Deux Chevaux that has charms beyond her years, and is a sure fire way to help jittery fellas pop the question. Owner and Poppy’s chauffeur, Andrew Jones said: “A gourmet picnic with berets, ‘Chocolat’ and ‘French Kiss’ sound tracks, and maybe even a mime, set in one of the Sunny Coast’s spectacular spots…well, you just can’t miss guys,” he said. “It’s all about giving her a very enjoyable personal experience that reflects you as a couple,” he said. Andrew and Poppy have had a great thing going ever since he imported and lovingly restored his little 2CV in 2014. What surprised him most was the impact the car had when people laid eyes on her. “I had complete strangers smiling and waving, and young children grinning and pointing at us,” he said. “I can think of worse ways to spend my days than making people smile, so I decided to start Simply Retro, The Little Car Hire Company,” he said. A Sunshine Coast local for over 20 years, Andrew believes that one look at Poppy reminds people of simpler times, when the journey was part of the experience and fun could still be classy and chic. “Less is more for me. These experiences should be relaxed, simple and unhurried; the way the world used to be before we all went mad,” Andrew said. So if people are thinking baguettes, Rosè, a picnic rug and a trundling, pillowy ride in something very French for their weddings, proposals, formals, or any other special occasion they could do a lot worse than petite Poppy at Simply Retro. After all, it’s all about you. For more information phone Andrew on 0421 637 687 or visit www.simplyretro.com.au.

‘The Shambles’ is a well-known country-style garden and has been featured on ABC’s Gardening Australia program. A lot more about it can be found at their website www.montvillegarden.com ‘Wongawilli’ has only been opened once before and may not be opened again for quite a while, so it’s a must-see this weekend. I took a Backyard Stickybeak about this property, owned and cared for by Rowena Cavanaugh. Arriving at the property, I could immediately see that it wasn’t a garden which was manicured to within an inch of its life … which is refreshing to see, as it gives you a more realistic feel about what larger property gardening is really about. ‘Wongawilli’ is four-plus acres of sloping ex-farming land, which Rowena has been transforming into her rambling Australian ‘country estate’ since 1998. Everything you see has had to be carved and carted from the original boulder strewn grounds. The impressive 2m thick rock retaining wall is all made from stone sourced on-site. Soil has been scrapped and moved to backfill the multiple tiered garden levels. Lantana has been hewn out by hand and plants, trees and shrubs meticulously hand planted.

Next weekend you have the chance to look through two very different Open gardens at Montville. On Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2, ‘The Shambles’ (85 Western Avenue, Montville) and ‘Wongawilli’ (19 Manley Drive, off Western Avenue, Montville) will open their properties to everyone. Not only will you be able to amble about some gorgeous gardens, you’ll be assisting some very worthwhile causes, with proceeds from ‘The Shambles’ going to Cittamani Hospice and those from ‘Wongawilli’ going to assist villagers in Fiji to rebuild after Cyclone Winston destroyed their village, their homes and everything they own.

Ph: 5494 5980 Monday – Saturday: 9am - 4pm

One striking feature – and one which should be copied and used more often – is the use of a myriad varieties and species of orchids, large and small. Not kept hidden away in a shade house, but incorporated into every part of the landscape … and I mean every part. And best of all, they are blooming their heads off at the moment – it really is a sight to behold. Rowena doesn’t describe her garden as ‘pretty’ – in fact you won’t see any potted colour here. But what you will see is a fabric of extremely well chosen groundcover, shrubs, trees and vines, which create a permanent palate of colour through the landscape. Her wisteria are just heavenly – but look out for the unusual doubleflowering one … it’s an eye-opener. Rowena has an encyclopaedic mind for plants, and can easily rattle off all their names. But what impressed me the most was that every time she told me what a plant was called; she followed that with the story of who gave it to her or where it came from. You see, Rowena’s garden is really a garden of friends, acquaintances and travels over the years, and for her that means so much more than having a picture perfect, clipped, raked, shaped and manicured oil-painting. Entry to each garden is only $6.00 per person, under-18 free. Refreshments are available at both.

From the churches Pastor Mike Turner - Beerwah State High Chaplain

Are we humans or computers?

Whenever my family and I go shopping, we inevitably end up talking about the move of major department stores to go from humanoperated checkouts to self-serve checkouts. My wife recently informed me that airlines are taking away human-operated check-in counters and replacing them with computers (and one very stressed staff member who is supervising the whole lot). On a number of occasions, I have asked the staff about this – I get a range of responses from them… they either say “it saves the company money”, “I don’t like it either” or “it’s what customers want.” Personally, I hate what these businesses are doing… let me explain why: Something that is integral to who we are as humans, is the need to be loved and the need to belong. Why else do authorities condemn the worst criminals to solitary confinement? When we go to the shops whether we realise it or not we are connecting and relating with people around us – as we drive around the car park looking for a car space, when we work our way up and down the aisles around total strangers and sometimes we chance upon meeting friends, when we pay for our groceries and clothes etc.… we are talking, listening,

sharing life with lots of people. If we follow the trend that we are currently on we eventually won’t need to connect with anyone… we’ll be able to buy anything we want from the internet, we can live our selfish lives in total isolation, not contributing to the world around us at all. We can fill ourselves up with food, dodgy movies, clothes, gadgets and talk to our ‘friends’ online. How great is that?! No not at all actually. In an age where one in three people suffers from some form of mental illness, family breakdown is at an all-time high, many young people struggle to show restraint, find resilience and purpose - isn’t it strange that we as a society are determined to push out as many forms of human interaction we can find, and replace them with a app on a phone? At some point, enough people are going to wise up and realise that we have made a big mistake and maybe we will get back on track. I mean, technology is great but I think the pendulum has swung too far. Here is a bible verse that I think sums it up well. In Ecclesiastes Chapter 4 Verse 9-10 it says ‘Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.’

Just for Laughs Mad about mushrooms

A lady wanted to serve her guests mushroom steak, but she had no mushrooms. Her husband suggested, "Why don't you go pick some of the mushrooms that are growing wild down by the stream? "No, some wild mushrooms are poisonous," she said. "Well, I see squirrels eating them and they're OK," he replied. So she picked a bunch, washed, sliced and saute'd them for her dinner. Then she gave Spot, their dog, a double handful. Spot ate every bite. All morning long, she watched the dog and no affect, so she decided to use them. The meal was a great success. After everyone had finished, her daughter came in and whispered, "mum, Spot is dead." Trying to keep calm, she left

the room, called the doctor and told him what had happened. The doctor said, "That's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I'll call for an ambulance. We'll give everyone enemas and we'll pump out their stomachs and everything will be fine." Before long they started to hear the sirens. The Paramedics one by one took each person into the bathroom, gave them an enema, and pumped out their stomach. After midnight, the last one was done and the doctor came out and said, "everything will be okay now," and with that he left. The daughter came to her mum and said... "I can't believe that guy!" "What guy?" "You know that guy who ran over Spot; He never even slowed down!" Submitted by Hugh, Beerwah

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The New Moon on October 1, is in your travel sector and if you are on a trip, companionship is genial, lively and pleasing. Mars and Pluto in Capricorn can put you into a spa with a hot stone massage! Therefore, the whole week brings you absolutely good will, generosity and opportunities for you with everyone you meet. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This week, with the New Moon in Libra, on the weekend sees a mix of charm and charisma. Friends, partners and other supporters add depth and clarity to new decisions and travel plans. The New Moon also recommends that you look into new ways of profiting through the talents and resources of other people. Monetary luck comes your way! ARIES March 21 – April 20 The early hours of Sunday, October 1, will see the New Moon in the sign of Libra. In Libra, in any lasting partnership, there may be some disparities that arise. This is the sign of keeping your balance when others are losing theirs! This New Moon in your travel zone plants the seeds for future adventures. It should bring you joy. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 The New Moon over this weekend sees that your stars are signaling a promising job development that is productive and financially rewarding. Be open to all new ideas and approaches. Getting thrown for a loop may be par for the course for the next few days as the New Moon on Sunday enters Libra. Visit art galleries.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 ‘Now is the time,’ the walrus said, to make lists and to think things through, however don’t make any final decisions until after Sunday as the New Moon in Libra promises new fortunes! Plenty of action to promote transformation in your life as Mars has entered Capricorn helping Pluto to recharge your resources now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 A window of opportunity opens up for you this weekend, even under the extreme circumstances of Mars entering Capricorn and the New Moon in Libra. All these are cardinal signs, wrestling with you to sort out minor complications and give you the potential to maintain a common sense attitude, whilst being adaptable. LEO July 23 – August 22 What an incredible week for you as your life changes over the next 12 months. Mars has entered Capricorn, as Pluto went direct in that sign, adding power and movement to your career area. The New Moon in Libra sees your sign playing fire and air off together, setting the stage for you to be a bright Ambassador. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 With Mars and Pluto in a compatible energy sign to yours, in Virgo, the trend is towards confidence and considering expansive opportunities. The New Moon on the weekend puts the focus on your finances and earning capacity. An opportunity, or an opening, comes your way in a new partnership. Heal yourself!

Week beginning 28/09/2016 LIBRA September 23 – October 22 It is not often that we have the New Moon in your sign, signaling a personal fresh start. Plant some seeds, not only in your garden, but in your life, that you want to see manifested in the future. Mars and Pluto, both in Capricorn, and Mercury going direct sees you gaining insight into difficulties, surmounting all obstacles. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Spontaneous adventures, being on your Agenda, will see opportunities abounding. There are new encounters, novel suggestions, or helping hands as Jupiter begins its march through Libra. You are empowered to put thoughts and plans into action over the next six weeks. Remember quiet support is available, in the form of a silent ally. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 There is a Sun and Jupiter connection so look for conditions with a friend, or a group, to skyrocket your potential and benefits. This is because there is a New Moon in Libra on the weekend, and Jupiter increases the benefits of the sign and crystalises them over the next 12 months. In general, it sets the stage of benefits from your friends. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The entry of Mars into your sign, and with Pluto already being there, there is a week ahead of you about getting to work and profiting from any advantages with lasting partnerships. With Jupiter and the New Moon in the sign of Libra, these both will bring greater clarity and understanding, and hopefully discovering lost information.
