Hi Everyone... In the past couple of weeks GC&M News, like all local media, has been sharing plenty of stories about the hard work going on in the community with fundraising efforts to support Australian farmers. However, some of our digging deep focus last week made a detour to become all about the Queensland Cancer Council and supporting its great work across the community. Thursday, Friday and Saturday saw an impressive roster of locals who took on the job of selling the beautiful daffodils, as shown on the front cover, and a range of other promotional material. The Queensland Cancer Council promotes the daffodil as the international symbol of hope, so being able to buy a bunch of flowers that contributes to raising funds for cancer is something we can all do to give hope to Queenslanders affected by cancer. This annual event also coincides with the area’s biggest Cancer Council fundraiser - the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival - held for the 47th year last Saturday. Congratulations to all those involved with both these important fundraisers and for helping to create hope for others.

Local News Marathon medic By Sonia Clark A few months ago GC&M News published a cover story about our local ‘marathon medic’ Ryan Hansen, who recently completed the Sunshine Coast Marathon. While Ryan didn’t smash the current Guinness World Record time for a competitor dressed as a male paramedic, he did complete the full 42.2km marathon and raised more than $5,400 for the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Legacy Scheme. Ryan had a finishing time of 4:37:02, which considering the heat and wearing a full QAS uniform, was still an awesome achievement. Ryan said that he was on pace until the 25km mark “before the wheels fell off”. However, he was able to enjoy the event and soak up the atmosphere. He was also heartened to learn his finishing time was 36 seconds quicker than the average finishing time at the New York Marathon. To verify the record, Ryan had to have at least two runners alongside him, but 10 days out from the event both organised runners were forced to pull out and Ryan had to scramble to find replacements. He was able to secure the services of two runners (joined by a third on the day) from local running clubs who sacrificed their own finishing time to ensure Ryan got across the line. Ryan said competing in uniform was tough as it was hot and heavy, as expected. He said the support crew did a fantastic job keeping him hydrated and energised, but his feet and legs definitely came out a little worse for wear afterwards.

Ryan with Superman (aka ‘Marathon Man’ Trent Morrow) Immediately following the race a member of the public spotted Ryan’s uniform and approached him to assist with a fellow runner who had collapsed. It was only when they saw Ryan’s medal and sweaty presentation that they realised he was also a competitor. “We had a bit of a laugh and I was more than happy to wander across and provide initial first aid until the on-duty paramedics arrived,” Ryan said.

Machine Gun Preacher comes to Landsborough

Manufacturing Jeweller 38 Cribb St, Landsborough

By Sonia Clark Glasshouse local Pat Kuijpers facilitates a monthly men’s group ‘Shed Happens’ in Landsborough, which meets on the third Monday evening of the month. The group has been running for a few years with between 25-40 blokes regularly attending the informal gatherings that allow men to speak about their life stories in a non-judgemental and supportive environment. In a massive coup for the group the next meeting, on September 17, will include internationally renowned speaker and author Sam Childers (The Machine Gun Preacher), who will share his incredible life story. Sam’s life has been well documented and was the subject of the 2011 Hollywood film Machine Gun Preacher, starring Gerard Butler, which was based on the book ‘Another man’s war’. “When I made the phone call I really didn’t expect that he would come out – this guy speaks to crowds of over 1,000 people,” Pat said.

“I certainly didn’t expect his agent to call back and say yes!” Pat said Sam had agreed to give an hour or so talk about his life, which will be interesting given his colourful background. Although the talk will be free, Pat is requesting booking confirmation by September 10 and a $10 donation towards catering costs. “People are always interested to hear about Sam’s incredible story - especially after having a movie made about his life,” Pat said. “His story will appeal to many of our blokes and hopefully inspire them. We are all dealing with a range of life’s issues so our ‘Shed Happens’ meetings are a great way for blokes to support each other by sharing their stories whether dealing with health or relationship issues or life in general,”. The Machine Gun Preacher will be at Shed Happens, Landsborough on Monday September 17 at 6.30pm. To book call Pat on 0419 761 577.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Mooloolah development gets complicated Glasshouse Country & Maleny News reported in June this year on a significant new development proposal for 60 hectares of Mooloolah land, adjoining the already approved 60-block development at 138 King Road. The application sought to turn four adjoining large land parcels into 131 residential lots plus two open space parks and a new road. The 60 hectare site – which runs from Brandenburg Road through to King Road – is zoned as a mixture of rural, rural residential and low density residential uses. The application, first lodged with council in August 2017, has progressed through the development approvals process but has now been officially halted due to what the developers’ consultants have called “planning scheme anomalies”. These anomalies relate to some of the proposed development not aligning to the current zoning of the land. Sunshine Coast Council has also requested further information on some geotechnical questions. As a consequence, the developer requested that council’s assessment of the original application (RAL17/2026) be stopped to provide sufficient time to provide a response. The developer has also written to council requesting that the planning scheme be changed to reflect their development outcomes. As this approach could take a considerable time before being resolved, the developer has followed advice from council officers and lodged a separate

development application (RAL18/0125) for the areas that are not under contention. This new application covers three stages of the development, providing for 78 residential lots. The original development application now deals with two stages (one and two), over which the planning anomalies exist. The subdivisional layout for stages three, four and five is now considerably different from that presented in the original planning application. Maps provided in the planning report for these stages now show blocks reduced in size overall and increased in number. However, more land is dedicated as park and environmental reserves than in the original proposal and will not be built on. Traffic from these three stages of the development is still proposed to be channelled through to Viewland Drive and a connector road onto Maddock Avenue. It appears that all the blocks in these three stages will be connected to town water and sewerage systems. The planning report puts the confusing approvals process down to a “… complicated statutory approach to development”. The application is yet to reach the stage where it has to be publicly notified and submissions called for. To read more on this application go to https:// pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/MasterView/ Modules/Applicationmaster/Default.aspx and search for ‘RAL18/0125’. The original application can be located searching for ‘RAL17/2026’.

Council funding boost for local community groups Sunshine Coast Council recently approved funding for 113 community organisations with the endorsement of more than $870,000 in new partnership grants. Among those awarded partnerships for the first time are community halls at Kenilworth and Mapleton. They are among about 30 halls, 12 neighbourhood centres and a range of other local community organisations that were grant recipients.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the funding included many community halls with historic significance, which had been the hub of their local communities for 100 years or more. “These days our old halls still play an important role by bringing communities together while offering a wide variety of activities and events for everyone to enjoy,” Cr McKay said. A trustee of Mapleton Hall, Donna Klease, said financial support towards the operational costs of the historic 130-year-old hall relieved pressure on the increasing cost of keeping it in good condition to attract more hirers. Locally the groups that have been successful in receiving funds are: Beerburrum School of Arts Association - $9,000 Blackall Range Business and Tourism Association - $21,000 Celebrate Glasshouse Country - $12,000 Conondale Public Hall Committee - $12,000 Friends of Bankfoot House - $1,500 Friends of Pattemore House - $9,000 Glass House Mountains Community Hall - $9,000 Glasshouse Country Community Group - $22,500 Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club - $7,500 Landsborough and District Historical Society $27,000 Landsborough Area Community Association (Morris House) - $28,500 Maleny and District Chamber of Commerce$22,500 Maleny Community Centre - $45,000

Music festival gold By Sonia Clark The Beerwah State High School Concert Band combined with the Coolum High School Band recently to win gold in this year's Victorian Schools Music Festival in Melbourne. This was the first time the combined concert band had competed in the competition, which attracted interest from both Australian and international school ensembles. Instrumental music teacher at Beerwah SHS, Clare Deady, was one of the conductors of the tour group which consisted of 41 students (14 students from Beerwah) and three staff members. As part of the tour activities, the students attended a Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) concert and before the performance met the Concertmaster of the MSO, Dale Barltrop, who is also from Queensland. Like the students he studied music (violin) through state school instrumental music programs. Each competing band had to perform one set piece and two own-choice pieces. The BeerwahCoolum group performed Country Wildflowers by Larry Daehn (set piece), Spoon River by Percy Grainger and Jungle Dance by Brian Balmages. Clare said the pieces were rehearsed separately

74 Simpson St, BEERWAH at each school from the end of May followed by a joint rehearsal day at the end of July ahead of the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod (where the group were awarded second place) and a final rehearsal before flying to Melbourne. Clare said the school was incredibly proud of the Beerwah SHS Concert Band. At each of the recent performances the adjudicators commented on how well the group played as an ensemble, which was amazing considering they had only had the two rehearsals together. “The Victorian Schools Music Festival adjudicators also praised the students, who are mainly in Years 7-9 for playing with a very mature sound; almost like a band of Year 10-12 students. Two amazing performances and results from our talented, hardworking and committed young musicians,” Clare said.

Lauren and Tayler Davidson

Base camp babes

For their first overseas trip, Beerburrum sisters Lauren and Tayler Davidson have decided to take the exciting and courageous step of trekking to Everest Base Camp at the end of September. Lauren, aged 21, and her younger sister Tayler, 18, are planning to visit Nepal and India. As well as the physical challenge, these intrepid young adventurers are eagerly looking forward to the cultural education. As well as the trek, they will be teaching in Nepalese schools, including the Khagendra New Life Vocational School in Kathmandu, which is currently attended by about 180 students with disabilities. As part of their trip goals, the sisters have set up a GoFundMe page ‘Help Us Build a School in Nepal’ to assist in building new classrooms and staff facilities at the school. GC&M News caught up with Lauren ahead of the trip. Q: Why did you choose Base Camp for your first overseas trip? A: The choice of Base Camp for our first trip was really my decision. I met Bernie Kelly (of the Global Immersion student leadership program) when I was in high school, and have seen several friends depart with him on trips to the Himalayas, the Andes and Kilimanjaro. One of those friends received a letter from Bernie inviting them to come with him on another adventure to Nepal and India. My friend sent the letter on to me, and I thought – why not?

Tayler kind of got caught up in the whirlwind of my adventure. About a week before the application cut-off date, she checked her savings, and came back and said “I’m coming with you”. Q: Can you tell us more about Global Immersion - how you heard about it and why you chose to travel with them? A: I love the idea of travelling with a group of like-minded strangers. Global Immersion also impressed me with its diverse itinerary. I didn’t want to spend all of my time overseas sightseeing, and I’m attracted to the way this trip’s itinerary aims to give Tayler and Lauren are looking forward to their you as many chances to grow and big adventure challenge yourself as possible. Q: If people want to support your fundraising Q: How long will you be teaching at the Nepalese efforts where do they donate? school? Will you be teaching English? A: Everyone on the trip (currently 10 people) A: We’ll be staying with Khagendra New Life has been tasked with raising $1000 for the kids, Vocational School in Kathmandu for about three so Tayler and I are together trying to reach at days – teaching various groups of kids. The least $2000. Community News Celebration cracking good A whip-cracking demonstration by students from St John’s Lutheran School, Kingaroy, will be a cracking feature of the sesquicentenary celebrations at Bankfoot House on Sunday, October 14. Up to six students are expected to show their whip-cracking skills, including use of a bullwhip. Cracking a bullwhip is no easy task. Longer than a normal stockwhip, a typical Australian bullwhip has a six-foot (about two metres) handle and an incredible eight-foot (nearly three metres) thong or lash. Friends of Bankfoot House president Ron Gillinder said the students will show how a bullwhip was used to control a bullock team hauling a timber waggon. “Former Bankfoot House residents William Grigor, William Smith Burgess and Jack Ferris all used bullwhips,” he said. The whip had to be long enough to extend from the bullocky walking beside the timber waggon to

the leaders of a 22-animal bullock team – more than 30 metres. The idea was to create a loud noise, not to hit the animals. The noise was a signal to go. The pair of lead bullocks were the most experienced and knew the bullocky’s commands. Ivan Wild shows Sometimes a whistle off his bullwhip in was the signal. Grigor descendant Ethel Burgess Peachester Hall said the lead bullocks had to be smart. “They knew a certain whistle meant to turn left, another to turn right,” she said. Bringing joy and creating connections Landsborough local and violinist Pam Handley recently received an award from the Red Cross for 30 years of service. She has been a member of the Red Cross Singers, a group started by Barrie and Therese Woods in the early 1980s.

The group entertains people in nursing homes, presenting a new and exciting concert each Thursday. Pam said there had always been an atmosphere of joy and a personal connection with the audience. “We’ve often been told by the staff that everyone gets up happily on those Thursdays, excited about the arrival of the Red Cross Singers,” Pam said. Pam is known by many, having taught and played violin on the coast for many years.

Mooloolah Valley Lions

Little piggies get racing

Contributed by Kylie Merola Speedy pigs were again the main attraction at Landsborough Hotel’s Annual Charity Pig Races that recently raised the amazing total of $6,310. An excited crowd gathered for the event, each hoping their favourite pig would win a race. Watching the little piglets race around the track, through obstacles and eventually making it to the finish line provided lots of laughs. It was unique entertainment and a fantastic family day out, which included a petting zoo, face painting, a barbeque and live entertainment. All profits raised at the event, which included auctions and raffles, will be split between five charities - the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, the Lions Club of Beerwah, Landsborough State School P&C, Bee Gees United Soccer Club and

Buy a Bale of Hay – Making a difference to Australian Farming Families. Well done to Terry Morrow and the Landsborough Hotel team for their generosity and support to these charity organisations.

Contributed by Mehera Moroney Members of Mooloolah Valley Lions have been collecting donations for its Aussie farmers’ Drought Appeal, which you can contribute to at Mooloolah IGA, Mooloolah Valley Hardware and Landsborough IGA until the end of August. At this week’s dinner meeting, the guest speaker was from Story Dogs - wonderful volunteers who take dogs into schools to help students who have difficulties with reading. Students get to read stories to the visiting dogs. The accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its magic as it helps children relax, openup, try harder and have fun while reading to a friendly, calm dog. Mooloolah Valley Lions meets each month at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club for dinner, friendship and to hear from guest speakers. If you would like to join or find out more, please contact the President Ron Flannigan 0413 443 130 or Fran Sheppard on 5494 7224.

Maleny petrol station application stalls again The Sunshine Coast Council assessment process for the proposed petrol station at Maleny continues to stall. The council has agreed to a further twomonth extension for the developer to respond to an eight-page council notice containing 30 points of contention, requesting substantially more information than originally provided. In June, the council flagged a number of significant problems with the application as submitted on behalf of the Brisbane developers, Synergy Property Partners. According to the notice, council considers

there to be multiple flaws in the planning justifications originally provided. Council said it believed the application fell short in meeting the required planning codes. It had given the developer three months to respond to the notice but the developer requested a further two-month extension. Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild

Contributed by John Andrews At the recent AGM of the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild President John Muller handed over the reins to incoming President Rob Otto. John, a tireless worker, had led the Guild for three years, during which time he saw the erection of the ‘new’ shed come to fruition. The shed was one of many built for service during the Vietnam war and was gifted to the Guild, still in its packing cases, by the Australian Army. Rob, a retired furniture maker, has contributed greatly to the success of the Guild and, like John, is liked and admired by all woodies. Life memberships were also presented to John Muller, Brian Harris and Hugh McKenna. Rob Otto, John Muller handing over the shed keys

Take Me Away Make Sri Lanka your next holiday spot

Sri Lanka, with its beautiful sandy beaches and luxurious rainforests, is one of the up-and-coming must see tourist destinations. The diversity of fauna and flora has to be seen to be believed, with the beautiful tropical foliage highlighting the vibrant colours of its many flowering species including orchids. Not to be missed are the spice gardens, where you can see the plants growing on site before savouring the heady aromas of gingers, cinnamon, vanilla and pepper. The Hakgala Botanic Gardens is set on 28 hectares and features more than 10,000 species of plants. An abundance of elephants seen in their natural habitat is a sight to behold. You can also spot leopards, sloth bears and crocodiles from the safety of a safari vehicle. Sri Lankan history dates back more than 3000 years with pre historic human settlement dating back at least 125,000 years. So not surprisingly the country is full of lovely historic buildings and museums. Tea plantations abound in the hillside areas where the tea leaves from the camellia plants are still picked by hand. Home to famous and colourful temples painted in many colours, Sri Lanka also boasts waterfalls, caves and so much more. Sri Lanka has some lovely resort style accommodation, even boasting a new eight-star resort. It is only a 13-hour flight from Brisbane with a short break in Singapore, so make Sri Lanka your next holiday destination. Discover a whole new way to travel!

Travel tips and advice

with Helloworld Travel Forest Glen 1. Pack less - Travelling with just hand luggage should be your goal. Do you really need six pairs of heels, tea bags and an iron? Take less and you’ll travel cheaper (no check-in luggage fees), travel faster (no waiting for your bags) and travel easier (one bag means less to lug around). 2. Learn a little lingo - Memorise a few words of the local language, and have the courage to use them. It’s amazing how just a few words will go a long way as locals tend to warm to those who have made the effort to communicate with them in their own tongue. Helloworld Travel has a simple to use tap mic and talk Translator App. 3. Keep your mouth shut - If you are in a country where it is unsafe to drink the water, keep your mouth shut in the shower. 4. Leave the guidebook at home - Rather than taking your copy of the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet, just copy the pages you need, then discard after use. Saves space and weight. 5. Bring ear plugs - If silence is golden, then ear plugs are worth their weight in platinum. Being able to sleep in a noisy plane or hotel room is a godsend. 6. Always bring a sarong - They’re light and multifunctional: something to lie on at the beach, a cover for when you’re cold, a towel, a curtain, a skirt, a dress, even an emergency bandage. 7. Sync your sleep - To get over jetlag quickly on arrival, try to sync your sleeping pattern with the new time zone immediately – stay awake until it’s dark. 8. Get travel insurance - Always take out travel insurance (and don’t rely on credit card insurance alone). It sounds obvious but lots of people don’t bother, and end up losing a lot of money when things go wrong. 9. Just go - If you have a strong urge to ‘go travelling’ or even just to see one specific place, start saving and go for it. Don’t delay. Don’t defer. Just do it, or you will regret it when you’re too old/attached/busy to travel. Come and see the experienced team at Helloworld Travel Forest Glen today and get started.

Local Eats Organic good times

Eat for a cause

By Sonia Clark Throughout September Cellarbrations at Landsborough will again host its annual ‘Organic Month’ promotion. Now in its fifth year, the month-long celebration of organic wines, beers and cider runs from September 1 until September 30 and has become a highly anticipated annual event. Organiser Julie Ryder is excited to be getting ready for the promotion, which lets customers learn more about organic products with organic wine tastings daily, company wine representative visits every Friday during the month from 4-6 pm and the chance to win some awesome organic prizes. As the popularity of organic products continues to grow, Cellarbrations Landsborough has definitely tapped into the market. It is one of the largest sellers of organic, preservative free, biodynamic and vegan friendly wines on the Sunshine Coast, with gluten free options also available. Julie said the promotion was a great way to raise the profile of the organic wine, beer and cider selection at Cellarbrations. “The customers love it, and more and more

people are coming in asking for these products,” Julie said. Currently more than 50 varieties are on offer in the organic range, with prices from $15 - $25. New additions to the ever-expanding selection include organic Moscato and organic cider from Tasmania. Representatives from Spring Seed, The Unexpected, Raw Vine, Rosnay and Yalumba have been booked to visit on Friday afternoons during the promotion. Everyone who buys a bottle of organic wine, beer and cider throughout the month will go into the prize draw towards a bumper hamper of organic wines and goodies. Cellarbrations is located in Cribb Street, Landsborough.

Permit fees for use of council land

I have been advised that Sunshine Coast Council has amended its permit fee required for businesses that use council controlled land to conduct all or part of their business activities. The charging of a fee is understandable and the amount of $99 pa has been payable in the past by one local Beerwah gym that uses Skippy Park as part of its fitness program because some of its clients feel more comfortable or enjoy exercising in an open area. Now council has hit those who use these council park areas with a new permit fee. The new council fee the Beerwah gym is required to pay has increased to $810 annually. This represents an increase of $711 pa or an increase of 718% - that’s right 718%! Not bad for a bit of government gouging. For this fee the gym will use Skippy Park one day per week, for one hour at 7am for approximately seven months of the year, with around 15 clients attending. Has this new fee been created in order to financially rescue our council from economic disaster? Surely council could take a second look at its proposal and modify it to come up with a realistic cost that is effective for both council and the businesses involved? Support is required for your locally based small businesses which are essential in our hinterland. John Weeks Beerwah What Council had to say GC&M News followed up John’s letter with Sunshine Coast Council and a council spokesperson has responded: We are very fortunate to have so many fantastic outdoor spaces across the Sunshine Coast available for the community to share. Council is responsible for ensuring these spaces are managed so everyone can enjoy them. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in demand from businesses to use the shared community space for profit-making activities such as outdoor fitness classes. There are two types of permits that allow this type of activity - high use/high impact (up to 84 hours per week) and low use/low impact (up to 24 hours per week) and both have an application and yearly permit renewal fee. In the past, low use/low impact businesses paid a $99 application fee and used this space for free. Due to the increase in demand for use of community space and the need to provide everyone with fair and equal access to these shared spaces, council has introduced an equivalent rental fee for low use/low impact permit holders of $27 per square metre. For example, a low use/low impact permit holder proposing to use 30 square metres of community space for a commercial operation would be required to pay a rental fee of $810 per year, or little more than $15 a week. A permit holder who uses less space would pay a smaller fee. Low use/low impact permit holders can include businesses such as food vendors, coffee vans, gyms and personal trainers. All permit holders were advised of the 2018-19 fees and charges after they were adopted by council as a part of the 2018-19 budget. Cr Rick Baberowski also responded: I can understand that this change, ultimately resulting in an increase to how small businesses model their charges, would be an unwelcome adjustment. From what I understand, council didn’t anticipate the frequent use of council parks as commercial venues, with the relatively new phenomena of commercial outdoor fitness classes. I know that Taz from All in One Fitness Beerwah has engaged with the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and council’s Community Land Permits team to reach a fair arrangement. Last week, Taz approached me directly and I have advised him that I would welcome his detailed representation about his situation and I’d be happy to facilitate that back to the officers for further review. I would like to remind the community that this is about the commercial use of our parks, and a rental fee of little more than $15 a week is considered reasonable to help manage the increasing demand and extra impacts of commercial use.

Thanks Glasshouse Country

While the rain was very welcome on the weekend, it worked out well with a fine day on Saturday. The 47th Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival lived up to its name: a good crowd, lots of action and carnival atmosphere, with fun and entertainment for the whole family. The success of this annual fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland is the result of a huge team effort: support from the business community as sponsors; other local organisations who help run parts of the program; and time and expertise donated by so many generous volunteers leading up to the sports, on the day itself and cleaning up afterwards. On behalf of the Charity Sports Committee I would like to say thank you to all sponsors, volunteers, competitors and of course to the community for coming along and making this year’s Beerwah Charity Sports another great success. Results are being compiled, so watch for more reports in coming weeks. Bruce Page Committee Chairman

RE: Landsborough overpass and rail upgrade

Landsborough Area Community Association Inc. (LACA Inc) has been advised that there have been two meetings in Brisbane between Mark McArdle MP and Landsborough business operators. We contacted Mr McArdle about the lack of community representatives / community group representatives and he replied that this was a preliminary meeting to establish a dialogue with the Minster for Main Roads and would not be the last meeting and no-one would be excluded from having the opportunity to communicate their concerns. A reply was sent saying we believe that the community should be involved in all meetings but no response has been received to this. We have been advised that business operators in Landsborough have come up with an alternate route for the overpass that has all traffic, both ways, going up Cribb Street. This is totally ridiculous. LACA believes it is inappropriate to have meetings such as these which do not involve representatives from the community. We understand that businesses in Landsborough are very concerned about where the overpass will be however, everyone in Landsborough will be affected by the rail upgrade and the overpass construction, some more than others. These meetings should be out in the public domain and all information should be published for everyone to see. There has been no mention of these meetings in Mr McArdle’s column in the paper in recent editions – no mention that he was going to the Minister with Landsborough business people to discuss these matters. LACA believes that Mr McArdle should be transparent in everything he does in relation to something that is so important and which will have a great impact on everyone in this town. A W Husband Secretary (LACA Inc)

Federal politics

I have always said I was a swinging voter but last week’s revolutions were horrific. Why did the Liberal Party follow Labor by changing Prime Ministers, especially to an relatively unknown alternative? I believe Bill Shorten now deserves a right to speak. Not for him nor against him. But the issue that took the Liberals into the office was stability. They have now lost that right. The incredulity of Abbott against Turnbull, as against three other members; and then a small fry comes out to be the Prime Minister. I thank both our local and federal members for their help with my broken arms, and then nine months down the line, although we lost our house, they supported surgery to help me. I will now be living in another part of Queensland, where I will find out who and what they support. Yvonne McIntosh Beerwah

Queenslanders get the facts on abortion Queensland Health will launch an online fact checker to debunk misconceptions surrounding the termination of pregnancy. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said that with a number of claims circulating in the community, the new fact checker would help Queenslanders to set the record straight. “The termination of pregnancy is a health issue and we want Queenslanders to have the facts – just like any other medical procedure,” Mr Miles said. “There are myths and misconception surrounding termination and I think it’s important to address them. “I know there are varied points of view on this issue, I know that some people feel very strongly about abortion. But there is no excuse for using lies to justify your position. 16

“It’s important that Queenslanders know the truth, which is why we are launching the online fact checker as a central location to find the answers.” Mr Miles said the fact checker would help Queenslanders form an educated opinion on termination and gain a greater understanding of why it should be made a health issue. The Queensland Government introduced new termination legislation to Parliament last week. The legislation aims to remove abortion from the criminal code and instead enshrine current clinical practice in a new health framework. Hinterland Kids Spelling Bee gets competitive

Contributed by Peter Voight The fourth annual Spelling Bee Tennis Championships at Beerwah State High School were a huge success in what has become one of several new highlights in the school’s yearly calendar. More than 25% of the student body accepted the challenge this year, setting a huge record for participation in this exciting event. The championship offers an alternative take on the more traditional spelling bee with the emphasis being on fun and friendly competition. Students battle in teams of four, spelling their way through the best-ofthree-game tennis matches in a knockout tournament until the eventual champions of each grade are crowned. Some closely fought matches can last up to 90 minutes. Tactics play a large part in each game, with teams agonising over the appropriate time to use their tactical cards. The speller can use a ‘team play’ card, which allows team mates to assist the speller with a troublesome word. A ‘reserve’ card provides the speller with an alternative word at the same difficulty level and a ‘count-me-in’ card advises the speller of the number of letters within the word. It was amazing to observe so many students taking absolute delight in spelling words to stay alive in the rally.

‘Take a Break’ Playgroup

Contributed by Diane Gudgeon We had a wonderful fun day at Playgroup celebrating our Playgroup Ekka Day. The children and the adults, including us oldies, had a fun morning of games of skill for one coin (plastic) a go. One of the games involved trying to soak TrolleyKev with water balloons while he stuck his head through a large opening. Another was pushing a ball down a long pipe to land it safely in a bucket. The Grand Parade was a sight and a pig (toy) was the winner. There were also stalls selling a hot dog on a stick or a marshmallow on a stick for one coin each and Ekka bags were available for one coin each. We finished up with strawberry and ice cream cups. God blessed us with a lovely sunny day, albeit a windy one. Thanks and Gods’ blessings go to our mums and helpers. Thanks to Elaine, Keith, Ethel, Kevin and Diane and our extra helpers Eric and Dianne R. The playgroup meets at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church each Wednesday morning from 9–11am during school terms at Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah.

Bush Kindy launched! After months of planning, the team at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre are super excited to have launched their innovative ‘Bush Kindy’ program. Centre Coordinator Dee McCaan says that this specially developed program will commence with an immersion class every Tuesday and Thursday for children in the ‘School Readiness’ room, and feedback following the recently run sessions has been brilliant. “Bush Kindy forms part of our ‘school ready’ curriculum led by our early childhood teacher Emma Coultis. Set in an outdoor classroom environment, a key focus of the program is to look to cues in the surrounding environment and nature for educational opportunities,” explains Dee. Currently the program involves educators and parent volunteers visiting the park located near the Centre with the school ready class for an hour. The ‘Bush Kindy’ seeks to encourage children to replace screen play with green play and promote team work and co-operation. Activities develop imaginative play and maths and science skills through natural cues that demonstrate cause and consequence.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

“The outdoor classroom environment allows children to be children and enjoy all the wonders of nature around them,” says Dee. The children are also encouraged to extend themselves and develop age appropriate responsibility by taking safe risks which assists in promoting self-regulation in children and their choices of play. The program also serves to promote a deeper bonding relationship between the educators and children as they form teams and experience the wonder of the natural world together. While attending ‘Bush Kindy’, the children participate in numerous activities including scavenger hunts and search and find tasks, which have already proven to be a big hit with the children. Building using natural materials is another popular activity as well as singing songs and yarn circles. Each ‘Bush Kindy’ involves a tasty picnic morning tea with fresh fruit, and

supervised ‘outdoor adventurous play’ is also encouraged. “Some of the play activities we’ve seen the kids enjoy include old fashioned fun such as rolling down the hill, climbing trees and bush walking. We want the children to take the opportunity to explore their senses with touch, smell and sight,” explains Dee. Following on from the natural focus of ‘Bush Kindy’, educators at the Centre are now looking to develop a Bush Tucker trail through the Centre’s outdoor play area. The plan is to continue to develop their edible garden as both a source of inspiration and education. ‘Bush Kindy’ forms part of the Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre quality driven Kindergarten program to help children be ‘school ready’. With the added convenience of providing long day care hours if required, both working and at home parents may be eligible for the government funded Kindergarten program subsidy offered through the Centre. To find out more or for an obligation free tour of the centre, please call 5438 7311, or call into 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary)

From the churches What distinguishes Christians from the rest of the world? Historically, Christians never worshipped the gods of any given culture, whether Greek, Roman or any other pagan deities. Christians are exclusively monotheistic, directing their worship to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as the Triune God. The other area that sets Christianity apart is its sexual ethics. From early on, the New Testament Church in the Roman era spurned a culture that was inundated with multiple sexual partners, homosexual encounters and engagement with temple prostitutes. Christians stood out precisely because of their refusal to engage in these practices. Tertullian said: “One in mind and soul, we do not hesitate to share our earthly goods with one another. All things are common among us but our wives.” (Apol. 39) The Letter to Diognetus said: “Like others, they marry and have children, but they do not expose them. They share their meals, but not their wives.” This sampling of texts from the second century demonstrates that one of the main ways that

Christians stood out from their surrounding culture was their distinctive sexual behaviour. Of course, this doesn’t mean Christians are perfect. No doubt, many Christians commit sexual sins. However, Christianity as a whole was/is still committed to striving towards the sexual ethic laid out in Scripture. Needless to say, this has tremendous implications for Christians today. We are reminded that what we are experiencing in the present is not new – Christians battled an over-sexed culture as early as the first and second century. It is a reminder why Christians must not go along with the ever-changing sexual norms of our world. To do so would not only be a violation of the clear teachings of Scripture, but it would rob us of one of our greatest witnessing opportunities. In as much as marriage reflects Christ’s love for the church, Christians’ commitment to marriage is a mean of proclaiming that love. In the end, Christianity triumphed in its early Greco-Roman context not because it was the same as the surrounding pagan culture, but because it was different.

Did you know that more than 425,416 Australians currently have dementia? According to https:// yourbrainmatters.org.au there is strong evidence that suggests maintaining regular physical activity is associated with better brain function and reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Research suggests that social activities that involve mental activity and physical activity such as dancing and team sports provide even greater benefit. Another health concern affecting many Australians is depression. According to https://psychcentral.com/blog/ depression affects more than 350 million people worldwide. A regular dance class can help bring more joy into your life, relieve stress and promote the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward – dopamine as well as euphoria-inducing endorphins. Dance is a great way to exercise, clear your mind, challenge your mind with something new and to socialise. Taking dance classes also offers a sense of achievement and improvement through regular participation. For those wanting to keep their brain health and mental wellness in check, Wild Health and Fitness runs dance fitness classes locally for all ages including seniors. New dancers of all abilities are always welcome. Visit www.wildhealth.com.au to download your discount trial offer or email infowildhealth@gmail.com for further information.

You’ll receive worksheets to put your insights into action, tea, coffee and biscuits upon arrival as well as a Positive Body Image Quote Card, and a ticket in the lucky door prize.

Theatre Beerwah director brings play to life

John Pielmeier’s award-winning drama Agnes of God ran for 599 performances in its first Broadway release in 1982, and has been performed all around the world since then. You now have the opportunity to see why audiences have been intrigued by Agnes of God for so many years in its upcoming season in Nambour. This production is being directed Genevieve Langford, Naomi by Beerwah resident Judith Boyd Clasholm and Yvie Somerville (Calendar Girls, Hating Alison Ashley) Photographer: Andrew Clasholm and it will resonate with you for many years. Its enduring popularity lies not only in its riveting and suspenseful story, but in its ability to make the audience ask big questions, just as the characters in the play do. A young nun (Genevieve Langford) stands accused of murdering her newborn infant in her room, and a court-appointed psychiatrist (Naomi Clasholm) is sent to determine if she is mentally fit to be brought to trial. Mother Superior Miriam Ruth (Yvie Somerville) is concerned not only to protect Agnes, but also the convent’s cloistered way of life. But none of these characters is without a back story, and the investigation will rouse clashes and challenges for them all. Agnes of God opens September 28 at 7.30pm and continues till October 6 at Lind Lane Theatre, 16 Mitchell St, Nambour. Bookings can be made online via www.lindlane.com.au or phone 1300 732 764.

In the Garden Arboreal musings

While I like to spend a lot of my spare time in the garden, I am not averse to heading along to an art exhibition, particularly if the theme is something I am interested in. So when Lea mentioned the upcoming exhibition at Vianta Arts being titled Arboreal Musings and the artist’s fascination with trees, I decided that it would definitely be worth a look. The artist, Christine Hopkins, said that trees and art had always held a strong place in her heart and I can understand how she feels and why they would make a great inspiration for a painter. Christine describes the exhibition as exploring trees from almost every angle, whether as complex geometric forms, strong brooding presences, or anchors for sublime landscapes Arboreal Musings will hang at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, from September 2-30. The official opening will be at 6.30pm on Friday, September 7.

Plant of the month

M.R.W.L. We care about our environment

Tuckeroo Cupaniopsis anarcardioides The tuckeroo, also known as carrotwood or beach tamarind, is a small tree often used to line urban streets. It is most commonly found in littoral rainforest on sand or near estuaries. This handsome tree can grow up to 15m high, with a stem diameter of 50cm. However, in gardens it is often much smaller. It can survive a wide range of conditions, including clay, but it prefers dry, sandy soil. Its small trunk makes it ideal as a street tree and is frequently seen planted in coastal areas. The tuckeroo has flowers from May to July, which turn into fruit around October to December. The fruit is a yellow capsule, containing three seeds surrounded by a bright orange aril. The aril is aromatic and attracts fruit-eating birds such as the pied currawong, olive-backed oriole and Australasian figbird. The aril is edible but it is very thin. The seeds often fall out of the aril when it dries out. The tuckeroo’s ability to survive in a range of conditions, as well as its oval-shaped leaves, make it an excellent choice as a shade tree or a wind breaker.

Jobs for the yard in September

• Grow any herbs now – except for basil (it’s too early) and coriander (it’s too late). • Grevilleas will be flowering away. Cutting flowers for inside the house will promote new growth and better plant health. • Pruning of edible fig trees can be carried out. Be very vigorous – one-third can be cut off. Figs are only produced on new wood of the new season’s growth. Give them a good feed of general fertiliser. • It could be a few months before we get good soaking rains and the drying September winds will suck the moisture from bare soil, so mulch your gardens to keep in available water. • Dig up and divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution. • It’s a good month to start the fruit orchard – plant mango, pawpaw, avocado, custard apple, carambola and sapodilla. • Spray your flowering mangoes with Mancozeb or a copper-based fungicide to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Watch out for rampant lawn weeds – especially bindii, clover and flatweed (or cat’s ear). Vegetables Plant carrot, choko, zucchini, sweet potato, cucumber, eggplant, beans, lettuce, radish, spring onion, squash, tomato, beetroot, capsicum, kohlrabi, okra, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, silverbeet, sweet corn and watermelon.

Flowers Plant alyssum, bedding begonia, cosmos, marigold, boronia, salvia, petunia, aster, amaranthus, celosia, phlox, portulaca, sunflower, torenia, zinnia, ageratum, gloxinia, impatiens, calendula, Californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, verbena, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, rudbeckia and snapdragon.

What’s on for gardeners in September • Elimbah-Caboolture Herb Club – September 7, 10am meeting at the Caboolture PCYC in Toovey Street, Caboolture. Call Ruth on 5496 7649 to find out more. • Hibiscus Society, Sunshine Coast branch – September 8, 10am for morning tea followed by a meeting and bloom competition at 10.30am at the Woombye School of Arts Hall, Woombye. For more information, call Audrey on 5476 2771 or Ted on 0407 440 999. • FaunaWatch – September 12, 8am at Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens, Tanawha. Walk, survey wildlife and learn about FaunaWatch. Phone Paul on 0422 429 594 for details on how to get involved. • Glasshouse Country Orchid Society – September 12, 7.30pm at the RSL Hall in Glass House Mountains. Come a little earlier if you have plants you want to show off. New members are always welcome, so don’t be shy. Contact Robyn on 0427 138 168. • Native Plants Sunshine Coast – September 9 at 9am for a garden ramble amongst native plants on a private property at Hunchy. For details contact npscevents@gmail.com or 5494 9187. • Peachester Garden Club – September 20, a trip to Coral Beutel's garden. Meet in Woolworths’ car park to carpool at 8.45am. No competition bench. Will hold raffle. More information 5496 9169.

Avoid areas with an oversupply of rental properties. Research the area to find out if there are new developments or housing estates that may cause an oversupply of rental properties in the future. Tenants generally prefer to rent new properties. If you buy an older property in an area affected by new developments or an oversupply, you may have to drop your rent significantly to secure a tenancy.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Serious competition was observed in several golf games on Friday morning. Ken Barker, Sally Adams and Priscilla Vickers mixed their skills and wits with players from Caloundra on three half-sized lawns. A lot of fun and a very pleasant morning tea. Sunday saw a very enjoyable game between Sally and Ken that started as a ladder competition but was curtailed after only one hour. Both players played well for a 5–1 result in Ken’s favour. Frances Harper also put in some practice for the remaining two Bray games. The Golden Oldies was played at Headland Buderim on Monday Two of our members, Nick Cram and Kath Smith, won section prizes. Nick won in the B section while Kath won in the C.

Ken Wallman from Bribie won the A and Kaye Robertson from Point Lookout Croquet Club won the tournament overall. On all accounts it was a very enjoyable event. Donna Manning and Frances took a class of players from Maleny State High through their paces on the lawn on Wednesday. This is turning into a regular feature on Wednesday afternoons, and long may it prosper. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1pm for 1.30pm. Saturday at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover It was a great week of bowls at Maleny Bowls Club enjoyed by many members and visitors. With the highlight being the final of the mixed pairs, congratulations to Miles Allen and Kay Gesch for their excellent game in winning this event. Well done Steve and Mo for your efforts in this competition. Thanks to all members who supported the Tuesday games. Wednesday night was another great night of bowls. The cool weather made the green run fast and very difficult to handle for those who often play with a little more effort than usual. Misfits had a good win with Wendy B back and playing well. Mick appreciated the cooler weather, so too did Ash who chose to dress for summer in shorts. The Handels bounced back to winning

form. The Tutors ran into a hiccup but expect some real form this week when they play the very competitive Mighty Tens. These guys have shown as much form on the green as they do at the barbeque. We are expecting a good matchup this week. Thanks to all who turn up for this event and support the club. Scroungers was well supported with fine bowls, followed by great nibbles and beer on tap as people mingle for the club members draw. Thanks Ray E and Joe W for the dart board setup. A big week is planned for next week with the highlight being the Monday monthly pairs where bowls with our hinterland bowls friends is held at the club.

Just for Laughs Ray and Bob, two government maintenance guys, were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A woman walked by and asked what they were doing. “We’re supposed to measure the height of the flagpole,” said Bob, “but we don’t have a ladder.” The woman said: “Hand me that wrench out of your toolbox.” She loosened a few bolts, and then laid the pole down. She then took a tape measure from their toolbox took a measurement and announced: “Eighteen feet, six inches” and walked away. Ray shook his head and laughed, “Well, isn’t that just like a ‘Miss-know-it-all woman’," he said, “We need the height and she gives us the length!” Ray and Bob are still working for the government. But now they are senators.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 We now see that the Sun has moved into the sign of Virgo, and that will be joined by Mercury on September 5. This means it is time for you to pay meticulous attention to details, deadlines, logic order and precision. Generally, you will feel optimistic about new initiatives. The weekend is about setting successful business goals. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The Sun sign has now moved into a compatible sign with yours, namely Virgo. Because Mercury joins up in the same sign, you will be drawn to more logic aspirations and your drive for perfection is apparent. The weekend sees you determined and focused on communication problems. You will overcome any differences. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Over the weekend your curious nature finds you expending a lot of energy. The best part of the week is to get up early to enjoy happy encounters with a charming, lovely companion. Mercury is your ruler and joins the Sun in Virgo, and therefore the first week of September sees you attending to home and family affairs. CANCER June 24 - 22 July 22 With the Sun being in Virgo now, and joined by Mercury in the first week of September, this should bring your attention to all those who you love, everywhere in the world! See if you can launch something new, under the solid foundation of the first week in September, under the good auspices of Mercury mixing it with Uranus and Saturn. All very supportive.

LEO July 23 – August 22 Mercury is in a delightful aspect with your sign at the end of August and the beginning of September. This will change after September 5, as you will need to be better organised and logically efficient in handling your cash flow. Early September sees the Taurus Moon urging you to seek attention in the professional career area. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 As Mercury begins September with a start in Leo, that will delightfully aspect Venus and you will be expressing learning and teaching. Perhaps there is an important conference that will be the driving force to take you through the rest of the year. There are benefits to be gained from trying on unfamiliar points of view and new ways of thinking. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Venus, your ruling planet, is in the sign of Libra, so your entry into September makes a delightful aspect to the planet of the mind, Mercury, on September 3. This means conversations sparkle and you will do well. Tie up loose ends, reorganise your life logistically, and see that values may not involve money or finance but laugher and joy. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Since the chance of changing somebody else’s mind is practically nil, it would be easier to let a pal or partner take the lead. Keep your demands on others’ emotional resources modest. Under current stars you now only need to just keep the lines of communication open. Interesting developments start next week. Launch something new!

Sally decided to take one of the jobs most Australians are not willing to do. She applied for a job on a citrus farm picking fruit. The farm’s foreman thought she seemed far too qualified for the job. She has a Batchelor of Arts degree from the University of Queensland and had worked as a social worker and a school teacher. The foreman frowned and said: "I have to ask you, have you had any actual experience in picking lemons?" "Well, as a matter of fact, I have," she said. "I've been divorced three times, owned two Jeeps, and voted for Campbell Newman and Clive Palmer.” She starts in the morning. Contributed by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With the Sun and Mercury plus the Moon being in the sign of Virgo, this affects your career zone. That means pay attention to your calendar dates, deadlines for bills to be paid and being efficient and meticulous. The beginning of September is excellent to send out resumes and hand out business cards. Revise any old ideas now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Leaving the month of August and entering into September sees the planets in harmonious earth signs, like yours, and could lead to travel, education or successful legal matters. If there is any publishing, that will require meticulous attention to details. Seek to improve your financial and emotional health by breaking from routines. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 As you move into the new month of September your attention may be called to home and family matters as the weekend starts. On Sunday, the Gemini Moon may enchant you into life’s pleasures with witty conversations and charming loved ones, especially children. Perhaps adjust to next week in the necessary downsizing on a project. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The theme for September starts off in your partnership sector. For instance, what do love and relationship mean to you? A meticulous spotlight will show what details need attention to make alliances tick like clockwork. Just be patient when trying to make yourself understood, or making a decision. See if you can make something old new again!

Dental Dental Excel.... Excel.... Dr David Marley Celebrating 45 years in Dental Practice Dr David Marley has over 45 years of extensive experience and has developed a great interest in restorative dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation as well as great belief in the benefits of cosmetic dentistry. “I always believe that a healthy mouth and an attractive smile are a great asset which should be nurtured and valued.

Healthy teeth are acknowledged to have a great part to play in supporting good general health,” says Dr Marley. David still keeps up to date with new innovations in his field such as his experience with surgical implants. He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all.

Implants

Orthodontics

David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.

Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.

Dentures

Bleaching

Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also dentures that provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.

Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.

Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.

Cosmetic

Payment Plan

For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.

Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
