Hi Everyone
T
his week we have included an advertising feature called ‘This Year I Will’ as a polite reminder that even if it is almost the end of January there is still time to get started on your ‘New Year's Resolutions’. With holidays now over, most of us back at work, and the kids back at schools – now is time to get focused on what you planned to achieve this year. I have to say breaking my leg on January 2 may not have been a great start to the year, and it hasn’t really brought me too much joy. Although on the bright side, so far it has allowed me to not feel too guilty about my resolution to increase my regular

Not only that - it has definitely given me plenty of time to think about how great it will be to go walking, yep me wanting to exercise! Australia Day Awards recognise locals This year two of the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards have gone to two Glasshouse Country locals, with Bindi Irwin jointly taking out the Young Citizen of the year, and Landsborough’s Steven McLeish has taken out the Creative category. Mayor Mark Jamieson said he was humbled by the achievements of all the 82 nominees for the Awards. “We are extremely fortunate to have dedicated people like this in our community – people who make a difference through their outstanding contributions to this region. The winners epitomise what it means to be an Australian – a quiet achiever, an unsung hero, a hard worker who expects no fanfare but works hard to make Australia, and this community, a better place. Young Citizen of the Year: joint winners were Bindi Irwin, Beerwah, and Samara Welbourne, Buddina. Bindi is an actress, singer, songwriter, dancer and tireless Wildlife Warrior who encourages children to have fun through learning and exercise with her interactive documentaries, videos and on-line You Tube videos. Her Kids Empowerment Campaign challenges adults to look at their own behaviours and the impact of consumption on wildlife. Bindi is a wonderful Ambassador for the Sunshine
Coast and Australia and was recently recognised by the YWCA Queensland as one of the 125 Leading Women in 2013. Creative category winner, Steven McLeish of Landsborough is an events coordinator, musician and performer with Bindi Irwin a social and environmental conscience that translates into practical action. He does everything from tree-planting, organising festivals and events, connecting people, mentoring, engaging in music and business endeavours, performing himself or advising on community events or celebrations. He works with Barung Landcare, Caloundra Music Festival, Real Food Festival, World Environment Day and Maleny Wood Expo. He plays in two successful local bands, coordinated the opening celebrations of the Maleny Community Centre, set up the Ghandi School (a successful exchange program with South Korea which ran for seven years) and choreographed unique green art performances and percussion movement workshops.

Real Estate buying and selling enquiries continued over the holiday period, both before and after Christmas (I need more listings!). I'm sure this new year will bring new challenges to each one of us, both in our personal lives and business lives. Recently I saw this interesting quote that sums up these thoughts. Carbon Canaries to sing out for climate action
Beerwah A climate action singing group called
the Carbon Canaries is being formed on the Sunshine Coast, and residents who are concerned about climate change are encouraged to join and sing up a storm on climate action. “Carbon Canaries are a project of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council,” explained Vivien Griffin, SCEC's Climate Action Officer. “The Carbon Canaries are a singing group who are passionate about communicating the climate action message through song.”
“Already we have had enormous interest right across the coast. “We would be delighted if Glasshouse Country residents were interested in participating in this new initiative, which we believe will go global,” she said. SCEC is having an information night on February 3 at the Nambour Community Centre, 2 Shearer Street, Nambour from 7.00pm - 9.00pm. “We would love to hear from interested would-be Carbon Canaries,” said Vivien. People can come along on the night, phone 0407 116 105 or email climateaction@scec.org.au
“Carbon Canaries are a community singing group, not a formal choir. Everyone is welcome and the more the merrier for getting our climate action message across. “It’s clear that many people are concerned about climate change, but don’t know how to make a difference. “We need a new way to connect with people on this issue, a way that tackles the serious issues but at the same time enables people to come together with joy and energy for a common cause.

Keeping our towns safe In a perfect world, we’d love to think that everyone in society is an honest citizen and respects the property of others and the laws of the land. However, in reality we know that there are those few, lacking normal moral standards, who think nothing of breaking into premises and stealing the possessions of others. To local business owners, having their store broken into and robbed is not only traumatic and costly, but it can also create a significant inconvenience for their business and for the lives of their customers and the community in general. Dan and Tara from Total Microsystems in Beerwah are fed up with getting a call out in the middle of the night to say that their shop has been broken into. The latest happened in the early hours of January 9. “It is now three times recently that some morons have broken into our store,” said Dan. “We don’t carry much of value at the shop, so the problem for us is the hassle we have to go to get the repairs done and the shop up and running again. And our insurance premiums go up each time. “We’ve never wanted to put up security bars as we don’t want the area to look like Ipswich, but it’s got to the point now where we have to just to keep our insurance cover,” he said. Luckily, they have excellent CCTV coverage in and around their store, so the exploits, faces and descriptions of the latest criminals are well and truly captured on film.
By Greg Brown
Local Police Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck said that the matter is being investigated by the Caloundra Criminal Investigations Branch and, with the aid of the CCTV footage, they hope to identify and arrest the offenders in the near future. “It’s a duty on all of us to look out for and act upon criminal behaviours in our towns,” said Senior Sergeant Duck. “Our vision is … members of the community working with Queensland Police to stop crime and make Queensland a safer place. “That’s our vision and to achieve it, we really do need the help of the local community,” he said. Senior Sergeant Duck suggests that anyone who suspects a crime is being or about to be committed, should call Police Link on 131 444 to report it. “If the matter is urgent / life endangering, please call triple zero (000) then police will proceed immediately. If it is not, report it to the Police Link line and police attend within an appropriate time frame taking into consideration all factors. “Thanks to efforts by the community, business owners and local police, the crime rate in the commercial centres has decreased around 25% in the past six months. Hopefully, we can all work together to see this decrease continue. “If businesses have concerns about local crime issues, my office is always open and I am always available to assist in our endeavours to keep this area relatively low in reported crime,” said Senior Sergeant Duck. The problem of business break and enters is well known to Bob McLean, President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce.
“Last year we organised for Senior Sergeant Duck to address local business owners at a Chamber meeting and provide them with practical things they can do to reduce the likelihood of crimes against their businesses,” said Bob. “The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has been working with Mal Brough federal member for Fisher to secure funding for the installation of a CCTV public space surveillance system in the Glasshouse Country townships. “These funds should be available in May for Beerwah and Landsborough. “Sunshine Coast Council should also have a policy document available by then, so we will all be able to work together to deliver the message to those who don’t respect our communities ...violate our community and the police will get you. “The plan is to protect the community with a ‘Not Welcome if you don’t respect us’ message, complementing the private surveillance systems which are already in place,” he said. The perpetrators of the latest break in at Total Microsystems were clearly captured on their CCTV

Police PoliceBeat Beat

I hope everybody had a happy and safe festive season and is ready to take on the New Year with an invigorated mind set. One of the many offences that we investigate is the theft of fuel or otherwise known as petrol drive-offs. There has been a growing incidence, over the years of people attending petrol stations, refuelling their vehicle and then, in an effort to defer payment, approaching the console operator and advising that they have no capacity to pay by either: • Leaving their wallet / credit cards / cash at home • Handing over their card for payment knowing they have insufficient funds • Having no means of paying at that time • Entering into an agreement to pay at a later date. In all of these instances an offence of stealing or fraud has been committed, yet the perpetrator is of the opinion that they have done nothing illegal and they will pay for this fuel sometime in the future, or not at all. Even if you make arrangements with the proprietor or their agent as to payment and then do not honour these, there is case law to have you charged with an offence depending on the sufficiency of evidence. If you commit the offence of stealing petrol and there is sufficient evidence, you will be charged by Police regardless if you pay the outstanding debt later. Some members of society seem to think that this is minor in nature and have a ‘catch me if you can’ attitude. I can guarantee that we will do our best to educate people to the proper practices. The school year commences on January 28 and once again police from this area and the Road Policing Unit will be out in force attending to high visibility patrols and traffic enforcement in and around school zones. Please ensure that you obey the posted speed limits and be aware of the many children who are among the most vulnerable road users and at times unpredictable as pedestrians and bicycle riders.

Baby heart defect awareness Have you heard of CHD (or congenital heart defect) in babies? In Australia, approximately one in every 100 babies is born with a heart defect – called a congenital heart defect (CHD). Some defects are mild and cause no significant disturbance to the way the heart functions. But more than half of all children with CHD have a condition that is serious enough to require treatment. In about eight out of 10 cases, the reason for the congenital heart defect is unknown. However, some of the known causes of CHD include genetics; other birth defects; maternal illness; medication, drugs and alcohol used during pregnancy; poor maternal health; and maternal age. Heart problems may cause a variety of symptoms in babies, including: shortness of breath; difficulty feeding; and blue lips and skin. This may produce a bluish colour of the lips and skin, called ‘cyanosis’. Two local families who have been tragically touched by CHD are holding a fundraising and awareness morning at the Elimbah Soldiers Memorial Hall (Coronation Drive, Elimbah) on February 8 from 11.00am to 1.00pm. The Pampling and Woodbury families each lost a baby daughter who was born with congenital heart defects. Dakota Pampling and Scarlett Woodbury were two little angels to their loving families, and were taken very early in their lives. The two families have organised the ‘Dakota and Scarlett Big Morning Tea’ as a way to highlight the issues surrounding this heartbreaking condition. The morning will feature tea, coffee and cupcakes (gold coin donation), face painting, raffles, cold drinks and a sausage sizzle. Information will be on hand to find out more, as well as the families of Dakota and Scarlett.

Sunshine Coast radio star, Caroline Hutchinson from 92.7 Mix FM, is coming on Wednesday, February 12, as the special guest to have some fun with the Glasshouse Country Women’s Social Group at their first event for the year. Caroline will entertain the group with stories from her eight years on the popular ‘Mark and Caroline’s for breakfast’ radio show. There are bound to be lots of laughs and surprises as Caroline reveals some of her most funny, quirky and unusual times interviewing all walks of life. The audience can also switch roles and ask questions of Caroline. As the name suggests, the women’s group is for women across the Glasshouse Country area and is for women of all ages and backgrounds. The main common thread between the women who come is their value of friendships. The Women’s Social Group formed 18 months ago initially sparked from a local Counsellor seeing the need to address issues of social isolation which many women can face. The group has been supportive and empowering for many local women, said Natasha Odgers from the Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra. “The activities held are driven by the interests of those in the group. Overall the group aims to fill a space in local women’s lives through new friendships, fun, creativity, thought-provoking sessions, nurturing activities and opportunities to share interests and talents. Tibrogargan fire captures people’s attention By Greg Brown Last Wednesday’s fire on Mount Tibrogargan was a brief reminder of the need to be prepared for wildfire incidences in the Glasshouse Country region. Fire crews from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and from Queensland Parks and Wildlife undertook backburning to contain the fire, which broke out at about 12.00noon. Water bombing was also used to stem the fire’s advance. No property was lost and no residences were evacuated. Luckily that night the area experienced a substantial rainstorm, which brought the fire under control. Several locals living in the areas close to the mountain contacted our office asking how they could find out information on the fire’s severity and whether they needed to evacuate. A spokesperson from the Department of Emergency Services suggested that residents tune into the local ABC radio station (90.3 on the FM band), who have an arrangement where they will regularly broadcast alerts and warnings if the situation requires. “If a resident feels they are in a life threatening situation, they should call triple zero (000),” said the spokesperson. “Otherwise they can listen to the local ABC radio or check the ‘Current Incidences’ tab on the Rural Fire Service website (www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au). “This will give information on the fire and what steps residents living in the locality should take,” they said. According to a spokesperson from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, a park alert for the
Glass House National Park has been issued to advise that (as of last Friday) walking trails and recreation facilities at Mt Tibrogargan remain closed, but will be opened as soon as it's deemed safe to do so. Anyone seeking updated information can visit the website www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parkalerts/12451.html. A number of GCNews readers – as well as our resident photographer Sarah – captured the action during the fire, a selection of which we’ve printed here.

What’s best – the bank, under the mattress or on the roof? Many people looking for a safe place to invest a small amount of their hard earned money, think only of locking it up in a low interest bank deposit – or just stashing it under their mattress. In reality, there is a much safer and more profitable way to use your savings. All the evidence points to solar being the best investment. We’d suggest you take $3,200 out of your term deposit, purchase a high quality Impact Solar System from your local electrician and dramatically reduce your electricty bill. The actual return on your investment could be as much as 17.3%.**
East / West – what’s the best? Does your roof face east or west? Did you know that if you have a solar system on an east or west facing roof then they are still about 93% efficient. The roof pitch is the determining factor. Many solar industry folk – including some designers and installers – are reluctant to put solar panels on east or west facing roofs, as they fear that they may be losing too much power production, resulting in a longer return on investment. However, results from RETI (The Renewable Energy Testing Initiative, based at Brisbane Technology Park) have produced surprising results. The tests proved that panels facing north, east or west all surpassed the Clean Energy Council guidelines of 6.3 kWh, based on 4.2 peak sun hours for Brisbane for a 1.5kw system.
Is it too late to buy a solar system?
Business feature
Do you believe your electrcity bill is getting too high? The electricity your solar system produces and is used in your home is worth about 30 cents per kilowatt hour. Even a small system can easily save you around $108.00 per quarter, and that is for an investment of only approximately $3,200.00. You will probably pay for your system in around five years, and for the next 32 years that electricity is absolutely free.
Using data recorded on October 26, 2012 – one of the few days Brisbane received a cloudless sky for the entire day – the difference in power production between a north, east or west facing solar system is not as much as most installers would think. It is evident from these test figures that based purely on kWh produced, the preferred orientation for installing solar systems is the northern aspect, followed by the east then the west. So if you have been waiting to talk to someone who knows about solar, try one of the local electricians who are qualified and accredited solar installers. They will look after you because you are a local too.
Electricity prices up again soon - Get ready Is your bill about $150-$220 Then consider a small system about $3340 Bigger bill about $280-$350 Work towards a mid size system about $4860 Large bills $500-$700 Invest about $7360
Terms and conditions apply - see in-store
At Impact Solar you will pay about the same price as THE OUT OF TOWN operators, you will definitely get MORE VALUE (ask us how) and you cannot get faster than same day service if you need us.

Call out for Glasshouse Country Festival 2014 Now is the time for local community groups to start thinking about being part of the vibrant Glasshouse Country Festival to be held October 17- 26. Representatives of all kinds of community groups are encouraged to find out how the festival can be a win-win for groups and the wider community at an information and brainstorming session on Thursday, February 6, from 1.00pm - 2.30pm at BADYACC. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate the unique arts, culture, heritage and environment of the Glasshouse Country area. Over 5,000 people attended the 34 events which were hosted by 20 community organisations as part of last year’s festival. Natasha Odgers from the festival organising committee and Hinterland Community Development Association said the communitybased festival offers so much for local groups
to further raise their profile, save money on promotions and other aspects, plus attract new volunteers and members. Festival organisers are seeking a wide variety of groups and events to participate. Events at the last Glasshouse Country Festival included live music, historical festivities, cultural performances, art, a hangi, markets, tours, walks, triathlons, skate comps and more! To see more about the festival held in October last year visit www.glasshousecountryfestival. com.au. The meeting is being held at Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC), Sports Ground Complex (take the entry road opposite ALDI). Light snacks will be provided. The BFS is being provided by BADYACC Beerwah and Districts Youth and Community Centre, for seniors to become familiar with computers, email and the internet. Encompassed within the internet skills is an explanation of the kinds of fraudulent and deceitful material that might be encountered on the internet and emails. The group agreed to meet on Mondays at 2.00pm for a two hour session, mixing presentations with hands-on use of computers, their own if preferred. Although BADYACC computer access is limited, everybody should get some time on a computer, and online. The next meeting is on Monday, February 3, at 2.00pm, at BADYACC. Those who have not been before can arrive early, e.g. 1.00pm, to hear about the project and catch up on the main points from last Monday's meeting.

Last year was a year of growth for HBC, with their family atmosphere bringing people from diverse backgrounds to train together. HBC’s innovative yet old school training systems have proven popular and effective, resulting in many personal achievements for people who train there. HBC is proud to offer flexibility in its service delivery with no lock-in contracts or joining fees where people feel dictated to about how they spend their hard-earned income. This flexibility coupled with HBC's welcome atmosphere and innovative training systems has seen an increase in the number of families who come to HBC to train together. Also in 2013, six registered boxers successfully represented HBC in tournaments across Queensland. You don’t play at boxing, it is a tough sport which requires dedication and discipline to not only train, but compete. Our athletes train extremely hard, twice a day, five days a week. Their commitment has resulted in a Queensland Junior Title and HBC finished the year in the top 15 boxing clubs in Queensland. Testimonials Kate Yates – Training at HBC has meant more to me then the fitness, challenges and camaraderie. I have overcome weight loss and self-esteem issues, made lifelong friends and now live a more energetic, purposeful and disciplined lifestyle. Tony MacKay – since coming down to train at HBC I’ve lost 12 kilos, and I am more focused to deal with the everyday stresses of work and family life. I feel younger, more energetic and my fitness levels have increased to a point where every work activity has become easier.

The group held its last general meeting at the Guide Hut on Thursday, January 16, and the guest speaker was Mr Kerry McGrath, one of our own members. Kerry’s timely presentation on ‘The Oscars and the Australian Connection – from York to Hollywood’ mesmerised us all. Most of January was spent setting up the new premises, with the big job of moving all the fixtures and fittings, plus the resources. The group’s spacious research facility and library at Corbould Park Racecourse, Pierce Avenue, Caloundra will be ‘open for business’ from Saturday, February 1. Enter at Gate 2. Direction details to our new rooms, which have wheelchair access and plenty of parking, are on our website at www.caloundrafamilyhistory. org.au, together with information on all our other activities. Unfortunately, popular raconteur and author, Dr James Lergessner has had to postpone his planned February talk to later in the year, due to another commitment. The group’s guest speaker, on Thursday, February 20 will now be Sue Reid, who will have the honour of being the very first guest speaker in the group’s new dedicated meeting room at Corbould Park Racecourse. Her presentation will be ‘On-line newspapers: Search strategies for the big four’. Members and visitors are welcome, and entry to the new rooms is through Gate 2 on Pierce Avenue, Caloundra. Contact June on 5493 2679 or Roz on 5493 1197 if you have enquiries. GCNews offers
by Rod Richards, Richards Consulting Pty Ltd www.richardsconsulting.com.au This article is about identifying the customer groups and the various segments they are in. A better understanding of our clients will assist in more effective marketing strategies and hopefully better use of funds. Firstly, let’s look at the geographic segment. This area covers the physical characteristics in which the business and the customers are in. We need to investigate the region, its market size, climate, infrastructure and future development. Having a good understanding of the region, its characteristics and opportunities for the future may lead to new opportunities as well. It’s important to assess major projects and the benefits they will have. Secondly, we need to understand the demographic segment. This includes age, income, gender, cultural background, employment, housing, family structure, market size and future trends forecasts. This information will help define our clients more clearly. Some businesses are marketing to a broad market and some have very specific market groups. Thirdly, the internal motivators look at the customer’s lifestyle, buying motives, culture, and education and buying behaviour. This area is critical in gaining an understanding of their reasons for buying. We all buy in two ways – rational and emotional. Market segmentation can assist in more effective use of marketing dollars but it is only one area of assessment. A business must support the statistical data with their own findings. Gathering information is a continual process and it includes desk top (statistical data) and field research (surveys and questionnaires). We need to talk to our customers on a regular basis and determine the reasons why they continue to purchase from our businesses. What are their buying motives and why are they loyal to our business? In summary, it is important to know if we are providing the right products and services, at the right time and in the right place. Could there be new opportunities to deliver extra products and services to the market place?

Ewen Maddock Dam – our dam
Peter Dennis, SEQ Water, what ARE you doing to our dam? I attended the discussion meeting a few weeks ago regarding Ewen Maddock dam, along with about 30 others. Many topics were covered: good access for launching non-powered boats, a place where dogs can be off leash, somewhere horses are able to get a drink, other picnic areas, all things of merit to the general population who utilise this facility. We were also told that the public are informed of any changes being made well in advance, yet no mention was made that you were going to put barriers along the ‘walking track’ effectively rendering it completely inaccessible to anyone in a wheelchair, children being pushed in strollers, elderly people who cannot navigate around them, and children who aren’t physically capable of using the steep ‘cycle track’. The road along the bottom that leads to the launching ramp was also discussed. SEQ were asked why it was closed and we were told that it’s unsafe as trucks carrying chemicals went along it. The point was made that those same trucks travel on all the public roads to get to the dam. I’ve since measured the width of that road, it is six metres wide, well able to accommodate a truck and a car passing in opposite directions. The dam wall was also discussed. It was originally supposed to be closed for maintenance and testing for three months, this was then extended to six months, and now it’s closed altogether. This wall was important for older and disabled people to walk along as it’s the only safe flat walking space available along the water. We were told at the meeting that it’s hazardous for people to walk along there. The majority of people present wanted a place to launch water craft easily and another beach area as the existing one gets very crowded. An easily affordable solution would be to reopen the road and the dam wall. I took my life into my own hands and walked along that wall, the ‘hazards’ are 50 to 60 cm wide, 1 metre long and up to 5 cm high concrete slabs with a couple of small metal caps protruding from the top of them. There are two white 60 cm markers at either end to mark where they are for safety reasons; they are set to one side and from the edge of the slabs to the beginning of the rocks measures 2.2 m. I think the public might be able to circumnavigate them in a safe manner unless they’re driving a bus along the dam wall! I’ve lived in Mooloolah for over 30 years and my family and I have used the dam in all that time. We’ve camped, swum, kayaked, biked, fished and walked our dogs there. It’s a beautiful place for recreation, but it seems that one or two people complaining about something means that the rest of the public must miss out. We are a democracy, and as such majority rules, why not be completely open about all the things that you’re taking away from the public as a whole at the dam and be completely open
and honest about the feedback you get from the MAJORITY, then base your decisions on that. May I remind you that these meetings were all about ‘Your water, your say’ to quote SEQWater. A concerned resident Mooloolah
When ignorance is bliss, ignore the experts
The police, medical authorities and other experts have begged for a lessening of the hours of availability of alcohol in order to curb the violence, injury, and the manifest of other problems caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. Our premier has a simple solution. Bung offenders causing alcohol related violence in jail. Evidence suggests that the threat of jail on charges of assault, manslaughter or murder has not curbed the increasing violence. Perhaps we will have a jail building economic recovery, but I think the government does not want to interfere with the profits of the night club industry. And that is the problem with government. Quite often the health and wellbeing of the whole community is sacrificed for the benefit of sectional interests, (i.e. the nightclub / alcohol industry). The real tragedy of the current situation is that the main drivers of alcohol related problems were brought to light 30 to 40 years ago by an exhaustive scientific study in Great Britain where there was great concern in regard to the level of alcohol caused violence and ill health. What the study found was that the level of problem alcohol consumption was (and is) the cheapness of alcohol and the availability. These findings were published in the Royal Society of Health Journal at that time. Since then successive governments have vastly increased the hours and days of availability, the number of outlets (hotels, clubs, taverns, bottle shops, restaurants and others). In addition, of course, the drinking age was reduced from 21 years of age to 18. This latter move brought a younger demographic into the ranks of permitted consumers of alcohol to their detriment. Since then also governments have assumed a ‘Neroesque’ attitude to the ever escalating problems. Do we need another study? Probably not. Do we need to take immediate and drastic action? Definitely yes! Will it happen? Only if there is a deafening outcry from the community will anything worthwhile be done. The question is what? Raising the permitted drinking age to 21 is a proven means of reducing the problem even if this is only by a small percentage, but even one life saved or maiming prevented is worthwhile. The main thrusts must be to lessen the availability and cheapness of alcohol (i.e. drastically reduced hours, higher excise, and
a halt to the increase of outlets for alcohol). In addition the removal of the nexus between sporting achievement and alcohol, and education of our impressionable children and young adults is a necessity. Ted Prickett Peachester

Re: Question on best use of funds generated by the Resource Recovery Centre
A couple of key points before getting into more detail. Firstly, it’s important to remember that in the main, the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre is not an end destination for the waste. It’s a recovery and transfer station and the waste is sent elsewhere for further processing or is transported to landfill sites. Second, although the facility is owned by council, the Beerwah facility is operated by a not-for-profit company that won the contract through an open competitive tender process. It runs at a loss to council due to the transfer station’s relatively small operational scale and location of the facility. This means besides paying the operators to staff the facility, a major cost component is the transport costs associated with waste transfer. As the operators are a not-forprofit company the small amount of profit that they do generate (including proceeds from the sale of reusable items at their Saturday morning markets) is fortunately returned by the operator to the community. This indirectly reduces demand for grants or assistance from council. Besides a major change to the economics of waste processing, the only way to avoid the overall loss is to charge higher fees at Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre than at the larger landfills or close the facility and locals would then have to drive to larger more cost effective waste disposal facilities further away. Neither of those options would be acceptable and I believe it’s in the best interests of the community to have a waste facility in the local area. Of course it’s still better to reduce our waste and to recycle whatever we can at the household level but in my view, for the foreseeable future we will need to provide a local transfer / recycling centre and I think we are fortunate that Beerwah has a remarkable group of committed people turning as much of our waste into reusable materials as possible. Real eye opener
My wife and I have just arrived back from Fiji where we were lucky enough to do a Thomas Cook seven day / night cruise of the Yasawa Islands. We had the opportunity to visit the various islands and its peoples. On one particular Island, we visited a boarding school for students aged from six to 16 years. These children all board and come from four surrounding islands. They arrive at school at about 4.00pm on the Sunday afternoon and leave the school at about 3.00pm to 4.00pm on the Friday afternoon to return to their respective villages and parents. Schooling is not free in Fiji, although this year the Government are going to fund tertiary education. The parents have to pay to send their children to school and it is rather costly, pencils and ruled books are treasured. The school rooms have half-finished ceilings, only three have actual blackboards, and something that I think were supposed to be desks. Remember the brown paper we wrapped goods in or the butcher used years ago? Well that is what their lessons are written on, the ones without blackboards. The little girl who showed me around was named Jamvela, she was in Class 3. I asked to see her school work book which she proudly produced for my inspection. I couldn't believe how clean, neat and tidy her book was and her running writing, I just wished I had her hand. We are hoping to collect some ‘back to school materials for the school’ which we will have taken to Captain Cook Cruises and they will ship and deliver them, personally. The school is 1032 Ratu Naivalu Memorial School their head office address is PO Box 3430 Lautoka, Fiji Island. Whatever is sent to Lautoka for this school, gets 100% of what is sent. If you would like to assist with providing the school materials – please drop them into the Glasshouse Country News Office 16 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains by Febuary 5, your generosity will be greatly appreciated by the teachers and students. Why you should visit Network DVD
I’m constantly reading reports of the demise of the DVD and the outlets that hire them. Well perhaps this may be so, but I don’t think it will happen all that soon. The suggestion is being put, that now, with the internet and live streaming, coupled with an overload of sites delivering these films, your favourite movie is only a keyboard click away. Maybe so, but not in Glass House, as all of us, that use the intermittent internet, will vouch for. As far as I’m concerned the term live streaming takes on a whole new dimension. I wonder if I’ll be alive when my chosen movie finally downloads! So, while waiting for 2030 for the internet service to improve, I regularly visit the local Network DVD hire outlet located at the local shops in Glass House. I find their film selections are very good, and the shop layout makes it easy to find the film I’m looking for. If, on very rare occasions I can’t find it, the friendly staff takes about nine seconds to locate it for you. I’ve been watching films and going to the cinema for over 55 years now. I do miss the golden age of movie making. It’s long gone and will never return. And that brings me back to Network DVD. Not only do they get all the new releases, but the stock of the old classic movies is probably the best on the coast. You’d be hard pressed to find another store with such an extensive selection of these movies as most DVD hire outlets seem to concentrate on stocking movies that were predominantly made after 1980. After all, that’s where entertainment life (movies and television) began didn’t it? Or am I dreaming? Visit Network DVD, and support a local business. Stanley Glass House Mountains
Not happy
I didn’t like Mal Brough’s comment re mobile phone coverage in his column last week. He said: ‘there will be strong competition to determine which sites are funded.’ Strong competition? Hey, fixing the phone system should not be seen as a ‘competition’ between phone-less communities, but as a government priority. Only a few years ago, Australians had a great mobile phone system available through Telstra’s CDMA network. It worked everywhere. Then the government in its wisdom sold the CDMA transmission bands to TV networks plus a few channels to improve emergency services. I now have 48 TV stations and pathetic mobile reception. Mal, what about I swap you 46 TV channels (I only want ABC and SBS, thanks) for a decent mobile phone service? Sounds like a good deal to me. How about it? Roger Bonhomme Glass House Mountains

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987
Welcome to my first column in 2014. I’m pleased to be home after visiting family in Europe and appreciate even more how lucky we are to live in Australia and in this beautiful part of the Sunshine Coast. As a de-amalgamated and smaller re-organised council, there’s much to be done this year and I’m keen to meet residents and work together to make the Sunshine Coast an even better place to live. On that note, I will be holding my first 2014 Out and About session at Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre on Friday, January 31, from 9.00am – 11.00am.
Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!
I was pleased to be told two of the seven Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day Award winners came from our local area. Steven McLeish of Landsborough won the Creative Award and Bindi Irwin was joint winner of the Young Citizen of the Year award. Sincere congratulations to both winners who are putting our Division, the Sunshine Coast and Australia on the map.
Beerwah Place + streetscape project
The transformation of Beerwah is proceeding well and the project is slightly ahead of schedule. Most of the major civil works – sewerage, water and general services – are nearing completion, thanks in part to fine weather. We acknowledge the impact these works have had on traders and council is doing all it can to minimise that impact. We encourage residents to be flexible with street parking, to make use of the larger car parks which are within a short walking distance of the main street and to support our traders by shopping locally.
Rural Landholder Grants up for grabs
I encourage Division 1 residents to get their share of the funding pie and consider applying for the Rural Landholder Grant. Landholders can apply for grants to carry out natural resource management activities such as fencing to restrict stock access to vegetation, wetlands or waterways; control of environmental weeds to rehabilitate native vegetation; and reducing sediment loss on farms. Expressions of interest must be submitted by 5.00pm on February 24, but to first find out if your project is eligible, contact council’s grants officer on 5475 7272 or email grants@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Ahead in 2014…
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and found time to relax with your family and loved ones. It’s hard to believe, but we are now almost a month into 2014! I’m pleased to kick it off by letting residents know this year will see some exciting new developments and improvements for our local road infrastructure, parks, sports grounds and much more. First off the rank, look out for upgraded playground equipment and new replacement shelters at popular Eudlo Park and also a terrific new picnic shelter and picnic tables with seating at Mooloolah Hall Park. I’m sure locals and visitors alike will appreciate relaxing in shady comfort while enjoying the beautiful surrounding areas of these two great parks.
Good news for Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
Did you know our beautiful Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is open 365 days a year (including public holidays), thanks to our wonderful volunteers. I’m always looking for opportunities to encourage and enable more people to go experience and enjoy our wonderful natural environment, so I’m pleased to advise that council is investigating how we can make Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve even more accessible to everybody. This includes reviewing options, including boardwalks, to improve wheel chair access through the Reserve. Further great news is that Spencer Shaw from Brush Turkey has kindly offered to conduct a flora assessment of the Reserve over the coming months. The assessment will help to identify and map vegetation communities, threatened species and summarise ecological values, providing a better understanding of the Reserves special plant life. I’m also excited to learn the Riflebird Survey, based on visitor reports, is now completed and results will be available soon.
Like me on Facebook!
This year I’m looking forward to using Facebook much more as a communications tool to instantaneously raise awareness with residents about local projects, developments and opportunities as well as key regionwide council initiatives. Check my page out at ‘Jenny McKay Councillor’ and be sure to ‘like’ it! 18

Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Over the past few months, kitchen staff at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club have been kept on their toes with plenty of functions and special events. So busy in fact, that they have had to employ a new team member, local chef Hannah, to take on some of the A La Carte and functions work. Hannah, who joined the crew in September, said she is loving it, and really enjoying living locally after working in some remote communities including Uluru and the Islands. The next event Kylie has planned is Valentine’s Day on February 14. Being a Friday night this year, means that they will be putting on a special menu at a very special price. The set menu, a two course dinner, will be priced at $49.90 per couple and includes a bottle of
wine, Yellowtail sparkling or Tisdal Carbernet Sauvignon. The mains are roast garlic and thyme scented chicken breast pocketed with brie cheese served with a pesto drizzled warm potato and rocket salad or seared grain-fed rib fillet steak served with sautéed herb potato, seasonal vegetables and finished with a rich red wine jus. The desserts are cookies and cream cheesecake served with a rich chocolate sauce and vanilla infused cream and pavlova with fresh fruit salad and raspberry coulis. Or if romance isn’t currently on your agenda, but an afternoon out with friends on the deck eating tapas sounds like your thing, then lock in Sunday, February 23 from 12.00noon. Living Peachester Art Show
February at the Beerwah Library
Calling all local artists and artisans, expressions of interest are currently being sought for original work to be showcased at Peachester State School's annual art show fundraiser. To be held over the weekend of March 29 and 30, the Peachester Art Show is open to all entrants and applications are being taken now. Suggested mediums for entry include oils, acrylics, pastels, water colour, mixed media, sculpture, wearable art and photography. Entry fee for submissions will be $20.00 and works can be sold at the event. As well as promoting the talent of local artists, this event supports a very worthy cause. Raising much-needed funds to upgrade the school playground which is in desperate need of maintenance, and if enough money is raised, then air-conditioning for the school classrooms. There will be a grand opening night on Friday, March 28 with tickets to the gala event including complementary drink, finger food, entertainment and a lucky door prize. Organisers are keen for artists to flag their interest in exhibiting as soon as possible as well as allowing them plenty of time to prepare their work for the event. They are also looking for local businesses to donate for raffle prizes on the opening night, and three artists to donate art works for the major raffle. For more information, contact Corinne on 5494 9777 or Marnie on 5494 9004 or email peachesterartshow@hotmail.com (please note this is a new email address) or go to their Facebook page - Peachester Art Show

Grey Sedge
M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month
Lepironia articulata This native sedge is grey green in colour which provides a different foliage colour to dam edges and margins of lakes and lagoons where it can grow to a height of 2-3m in thick clumps. A good example is in Ewen Maddock Dam, on the right as you are heading south along Steve Irwin Way. Grey sedge has hollow cylindrical stems with flowering spikelets to 4cm long. This plant is a nutrient and sediment trap along waterways and can sustain itself in water up to 1.5 metres deep, providing stable habitat and food for water birds and many frog species. This plant has been extensively used for planting in constructed wetlands for urban run-off management and is suitable for acid waters with low nutrient levels.

• Citrus trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. • Remove the spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seed and grow them yourself if you wish. • Prepare bulb beds and beds for spring-flowering annuals with deep digging, addition of organic matter and mulching. • Once the sweet corn has finished, start to prepare it for peas and snow pea crops, by digging in some garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March / April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. • Take softwood cuttings of geraniums and pelargonium so that you can strike them and create new plants.

Could an offset home loan help you get debt free faster? Paying off a home loan as fast as possible is usually the most desirable option for most Australians. After all, the sooner you become debt-free, the sooner you’ll be able to get your finances back on track and begin working towards your next big investment. There are a wide range of different options and facilities available to home loan borrowers that can be used to make the burden of repayments a little more manageable in the long run, www.gcnews.com.au
and can even help to reduce your mortgage length if used correctly. For example, one of the major components of making home loan repayments is the interest involved. Depending on the economic conditions of Australia at the time you took out your mortgage, as well as the type of home loan you chose, your interest rate will have an influence over the size of your repayment amounts. However, it could be worth discussing the option of adding an
offset account to your home loan, which can help to dramatically lower your overall repayment scheme. Funds you have in your account are offset against your loan balance. As a result, this reduces the amount of interest you pay overall. If you had a home loan with an overall balance of $500,000 and an offset account attached with a balance of $50,000, you would only be charged interest on $450,000 rather than your full home loan amount.
This has very clear benefits from the beginning and could be a fantastic option to consider for those with a high level of income or established savings. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Country Community Church The other night I was tucking my kids in bed for the night and I thought it amazing how a 32 year old bloke could love three little people so much. When you have your first child, you wonder how you could ever love a second or third one the same, but somehow God gives us a greater measure to go around all of them equally. I also learned something really interesting this week about the two times when people heard the voice of God proclaim His love for His Son Jesus. ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ (Mark 1:11) The first time was at the start of Christ’s ministry where He was baptised by John in the Jordan River. Historians and archeologists have since excavated the site believed to be the place, it is only five miles from the Dead Sea - the lowest point of land on the planet, and located to the south of the holy land. The second time God said this was on top of Mt Hermon at the transfiguration with Peter, James
and John (Mark 9), the highest point of Israel and also the most northern in the country. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that God made these declarations at these two extreme locations. It’s as if He wanted to point out that from the highest of heights, to the lowest of depths, from the north to the south, Jesus is my beloved! All eyes are to be on Him! When we fix our eyes on the Son of God and discover what He has done for us through His death and resurrection, all things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace. Bless you this week and see you in Church! Brendan

This year the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions are looking at the opportunity of submitting a Master (Over 38's) Team into the South East Queensland AFL competition. So far we have had a positive response to the idea and with the team playing every second week many an old legend is dusting off their boots and buttoning up jumpers to relive their former glory days! The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Master’s attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbie’s to ex-AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and our oldest 69! The season is a 12 game fixture, played fortnightly. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment rather than premierships and flags. At the end of each season there is a national carnival – last year it was in Darwin and next year will be Adelaide, where players from across the state represent Queensland against all the other states and territories. Any Interested players can contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig. Bales@Quantum.com

The doctors at the Landsborough and Mooloolah Medical Centres have been providing an after hours service for their patients for the past twenty- nine years but it has now been decided to adopt the Federal Government’s initiative of the After Hours GP Helpline which has been established since 2011. When you, as a patient, call the service, your call is answered by a registered nurse who triages your condition. If the nurse determines that you could benefit from speaking to a GP, you will be transferred to a helpline GP. The GP will talk to you, assess your condition, and provide medical advice. Upon advice from the nurse and or GP, you may be able to manage your condition at home, or until you can see your usual GP during normal business hours. Where self-management is not possible and your condition cannot wait until the next day for treatment, you will be directed to Family Care Medical Services who are now our after hours medical services. A father saw his teenage daughter’s bedroom and was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was neat and tidy. There was an envelope on the pillow. It was addressed ‘Dad’. ‘Dear Dad, it is with great regret and sorrow that I’m writing you, but I’m leaving home. I have eloped with my new boyfriend Grunter. I’ve been finding real passion and he is so nice to me. You’ll like him too even with all his piercings, tattoos, and motorcycle clothes. Truth is I’m pregnant and Grunter said that he wants me to have the kid and that we can be very happy together. Even though Grunter is much older than me (anyways, 42 isn’t so old these days is it?), and has no money, really these things shouldn’t stand in the way of our relationship, don’t you
agree? It’s true he had other girlfriends as well but I know he’ll be faithful to me in his own way. He wants to have many more children with me and that’s now one of my dreams too. In the meantime, we’ll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Grunter can get better, he sure deserves it! Your loving daughter, Rosie. PS: Dad, none of the above is true. I’m over at the neighbour’s house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than my report card that’s in my desk centre drawer. Please sign it and call when it is safe for me to come home. I love you so much! Leigh Heilig, Beerwah

Just for Laughs
AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Only once a year can you have the New Moon as your personal lunation! This New Moon is in your sign at the beginning of this year, so make a list of all nice things that you want in your life. This includes happiness, success and popularity. It is also a good time to release an old social attachment. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The word ‘new’ does not always equate to improvement. It may just mean something that you have not tried before. New money can potentially spell freedom as it provides an option for escaping a difficult situation. So this New Moon week in the sign of Aquarius could bring light and liberation. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week you will be flying high to your own individualistic, independent spirit! January 30 brings us a New Moon in the amazing sign of Aquarius, to remind you that if you have been having fun with friends it’s still the time to keep up with the social whirl. Some Arians might have to watch out for gruff words. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This New Moon week in the technology sign of Aquarius is favorable for your career interests and advancement. Perhaps an important conference or networking opportunity arrives. It’s a week that events can be enlightening and challenge you to change your point of view. That’s hard for most Taurus souls.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 You should have a week that glides with progressive free spirit enterprise! Perhaps you will paint yourself a new liberated view of the future! This New Moon week imprints on those Gemini expansive ideas about exploring the world. Venus going direct brings more positive attention to financial areas. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This New Moon week arriving at the end of the month provides you with the energy to tackle home projects that require new electrical wiring or additional computer programming. You may be a role model through demonstrating your self-discipline to children. Investigate new angles that bring more profits. LEO July 23 – August 22 With the New Moon in Aquarius by the end of this month, it inspires unconventional relationships with others. This may be with discussions on technology with partners, or it could be an affair with an unusual romantic twist. In fact, take a chance on someone who is different from most. Be spontaneous. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 If you have been faced with delays or restrictions, you may find you have been quietly nurturing your position and you need not succumb to anxiety or worry. Under the New Moon in Aquarius great breakthroughs can be liberating in terms of career or financial benefits. Social media connection helps your career.
LIBRA September 23 – October 22 You may find you are moving into a rowdy week by the end of this month, as in these last days of January the Sun and Uranus, together with the New Moon in Aquarius, will break open others rigid problems. Play all your cards smartly as you can expand your life’s circumstances. Venus direct now irons out troubles. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This New Moon in Aquarius, running through the end of the last week in January, signifies positive changes, perhaps even breakthroughs with respect to your family or living arrangements. As Aquarius is an air sign, and feels itself strongly in communication, take no notice of adverse opinions in current emails. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 When the New Moon this week moves into the sign of Aquarius it should trigger exciting ideas and unusual conversations. There is a high-tech buzz around all new gadgets and social media. Express your liberated progressive side through unconventional ideas about the ‘need to be free’ philosophies of life. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This New Moon in Aquarius for the last week of January breathes new life into your monetary area. Fresh earnings are possible. It is also the best time to buy something for yourself. If you have been feeling withdrawn this week, you may also find yourself supported by a change by social contacts.
