W
ell, as I sit at my desk on this Friday afternoon getting ready for the weekend, I decide to write my column – a task normally left to a few frenzied minutes before we go to print on Monday morning. Why? Well everything has run really smoothly this week and all of my work is done for the next edition – and it would even seem that all must be ‘right in the world of Glasshouse Country & Maleny’ as I haven’t received one letter to the editor before our Friday 12.00noon deadline. It is such a rare event, that I feel compelled to make sure that you don’t think I have gone on some crazed ‘censorship’ kick and not printed anyone’s comments this week! Alas there is no conspiracy; just no one has felt the need to share their view this week – which is disappointing as I know how many of you enjoy reading them. So I thought it might be a good time to remind people that while our absolute maximum word count for letters is 300, it is okay just to send a well-considered sentence or two or, even if you have a brief thumbs up or thumbs down to something you have seen or experienced locally, we love to hear your thoughts. Looking forward to our regular letters page next week. Regards,

Local News The Motley Mix Show Fiona Groom will be exhibition her work from April 2 to 30 at Vianta Arts in Simpson Street, Beerwah. Although Fiona has been creative for all her life, she only started painting in 2000 when she enrolled in a local Tafe course. “As long as I can remember I have had a keen interest in animals and art,” Fiona said. “Drawing, tracing and cutting out pictures was an important pastime when I was young and, as the years passed, my interest grew and finally evolved into the arts practice I have today.” She has exhibited widely throughout Queensland, interstate and overseas, and has curated a number of exhibitions and art shows.

Fiona is an extraordinarily accomplished artist, creating lifelike, yet quirky portraits of animals. Her motivation to paint comes from a need to convey what she sees – animal life and the natural world, which provide her with an unending source of ideas and the opportunity to experiment and evolve as an artist. “Describing my work is easy: it’s always been traditional realism and the natural world,” she said. “For me the animal kingdom is the driving force behind my art as I love to delve into the diversity of animal life. “My intention is to capture my subject’s character and expression, incorporating their humour, their majesty and wonder, and as a result, the painting then tells its own story.”

When we were looking to revamp the kitchen our main concern was to choose someone local, and someone who came recommended – Kev at Kev’s Kitchens was both. On first meeting with Kev we knew there was no need to pursue any other quotes, as we felt comfortable we had found the right man for the job. We wanted a decent, smart kitchen working to our budget, and Kev listened and delivered. He organised all the workers, and everyone who came into our home was polite, respectful and professional – a true extension of Kev himself. Thank you team!

Glass House Mountains resident Peter Farrell was recently presented with a ‘Quilt of Valour’ at Nambour RSL in recognition of his service, sacrifice and valour for Australia as a combat veteran. Every year one recipient is nominated from each state and Peter, who served in the 7th Battalion (Royal Australian Regiment), was a front line soldier from 1970 until 1971 on a tour of duty in Vietnam. Quilts of Valour Australia is an organisation that seeks to acknowledge the valour and sacrifice of Australian Defence Force service members and veterans who have been deployed in combat operations. The quilts have been hand made with care and consideration and are a tangible way for everyday Australian people to show their appreciation and acknowledgment of the immense personal fortitude involved in what ADF members engaged in combat have to do in serving their country. On the day, Peter had no idea that he had been nominated. His wife Kay had just told him that he was meeting friends at the RSL Club. To his surprise, an RSL dignitary came out and shook his hand and then asked him to sit down, at which point Peter was presented with the quilt in recognition of his service to his country, along with his tireless community service work with organisations such as Rotary and St Vincent de Paul.

“I was completely dumbfounded! It came as a complete surprise to me and I really had no idea. It was an honour to have even been nominated,” said Peter interestingly, Peter was awarded the quilt on March 10, which also happened to be the date that he was discharged from service in 1971. The hand-created quilts are meant to be a symbolic representation. The top of the quilt with its mixture of colours, shapes and fabrics is used to represent the various individuals in our communities. The wadding inside the quilt represents the hope of the quilt creators that it will bring warmth, comfort and healing to the person it is presented to, and the backing which supports the other layers symbolises the recipients’ strength and the support of the communities and Australia. In the letter that is presented to those that are awarded a quilt, the following statement is included: “Each stitch that holds the layers together represents love, gratitude and sometimes the tears of the maker.”

Australian of the Year honoured with key to the city Australian of the Year for 2017, Emeritus Professor Alan Mackay-Sim, last week received another accolade, the Key to the City, from Sunshine Coast Council for his lifetime of dedicated research and international leadership. Professor McKay-Sim's pioneering research has helped provide a positive future for thousands of people with spinal cord injuries – in Australia and overseas. The Currimundi resident accepted the key at last week’s council meeting at Caloundra and spoke of his love for the Sunshine Coast. “This is indeed a great honour,” Professor Mackay-Sim said. “We have owned a beach house on the Sunshine Coast for almost 30 years. It was an automatic decision to move here permanently when I retired a couple of years ago. “I love the outdoor lifestyle and the people here are genuinely more friendly and open than elsewhere. “I can ride a bike for pretty much all my shopping and everything else is a short ride by car. Perfect every day!” Professor Mackay-Sim led the world's first clinical trial using nasal cells in treating spinal cord injuries and his research helped play a central role in the world's first successful restoration of mobility for a quadriplegic person. Mayor Mark Jamieson said that without Professor Mackay-Sim’s work, many new breakthroughs in medical science may not be possible. “We are very proud to have Professor MackaySim as part of our Sunshine Coast community
SHOP 7, 44 Simpson Street Beerwah (Between Specsavers and Millers)
and I’m delighted we have been able to honour him in this way,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Every day, thanks to people such as our Australian of the Year, the Sunshine Coast is demonstrating that it is healthy, smart and creative. “It’s through outstanding contributors like Professor Mackay-Sim that our reputation is growing across Australia and in international circles. “The acknowledgement of Professor MackaySim’s work also shows young Sunshine Coast residents the endless opportunities available by pursuing a career in health and medical research. “We thank him for his service to our community and wish him all the best as he continues to give hope to thousands of Australians with spinal cord injuries.” A global authority on the human sense of smell and the biology of nasal cells, Professor MackaySim led the world’s first clinical trial using these cells in spinal cord injury. In 2014, his research helped play a central role in proving the safety of science that was a precursor to a doctor in Poland undertaking the first successful restoration of mobility in a quadriplegic man. As the director of the National Centre for Adult Stem Cell Research for a decade, Professor Mackay-Sim’s research has championed the use of stem cells to understand the biological bases of brain disorders and diseases such as schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease and Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. This pioneering work has led to collaborations with teams of health professionals who are translating his research into clinical practice. “I cannot think of a greater honour than to be
named 2017 Australian of the Year,” Professor Mackay-Sim said. “It is of course a wonderful accolade for me and my teams of researchers and collaborators over the years, but I also take it as a recognition of science and scientists and their contribution to our society and community. “I believe science and scientific research are as important as health and defence for the future of our nation. “Our country and our world is facing many challenges – from climate change to the diseases of old age, from new epidemics to the need for new medicines, from the disruptive technologies to the loss of livelihoods of many whose work is lost or displaced by new technologies. “As a society we must solve these challenges. “New scientific discoveries and new technologies will be a major part of that.”

‘Above the Blue’ fundraising The Hinterland community generously got behind the ‘Above the Blue’ fundraising gig on Saturday, February 25, which was part of an ongoing project to raise awareness through music and outreach for those suffering anxiety and depression. The event at the Maleny RSL club was packed to capacity and an incredible $12,000 was raised on night. Following their own individual journeys with ‘The Black Dog’, Maleny musos Col Finley and Paul ‘Richo’ Richardson started the ‘Above the Blue’ project in 2015. To date, with the support of Maleny Apex Club and the local community, it has raised awareness and funds through a well received compilation album, social media sites and live performances. Proceeds of the album sale have been directed to Beyond Blue and the funds raised on the night were donated to the local Apex Club. With Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson as MC, the night went off with

Photography by Kat Blackwell www.kat-blackwell.com a bang and organisers were thrilled with the awesome community support. “It was a beautiful night and we are all very proud of what was achieved,” says Col. “It was wonderful to have a full house and it blows me away how supportive the community is here. I’ve really noticed how, over the last few years, people’s awareness of mental health has grown and it’s great that people can tell their story.” A fun idea on the night, instigated by Dicko, was to get the musos to perform a song for the audience that they wouldn’t normally do in public. Kelly Cork got up and performed the 70s hit ‘Kung Fu Fighting’, Tom Richter and Col got up and performed the ACDC classic ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ on ukeleles, Nellie Finley performed Otis Redding’s soul hit ‘Dock of the Bay’ and Richo gave a stirring rendition of Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’. The night concluded with a group performance of the Village People’s party favourite ‘YMCA’.

Wedding and accommodation application at Bald Knob A development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council for ‘The Old Dairy’ wedding venue at 621 Landsborough-Maleny Road, Bald Knob (on the downhill side of the ‘icebox’). The material change of use application stems from a letter sent to the owners in November 2016 pointing out that the land was being used as a Function Facility and Short Term Accommodation, but no original approval had been given for this use, and as such the development was being operated illegally. The current facility is zoned for Rural use. Consequently, an application was submitted to council which looks to expand the existing wedding facilities to be able to cater for up to 120 guests and accommodate up to 50 guests in the existing two cabins, six new cabins and a campground capable of accommodating 20 people. The proposal is for one wedding a week to be held at the site. It is noted that the accommodation will only be utilised as part of a wedding function. The campground will also require the construction of a significant amenities block. The planning report acknowledges that the current access off Landsborough-Maleny Road is inadequate and will require some redesign and modification, resulting in some widening and a left turning lane. As well, significant all weather internal access roads and 50 parking spaces have been planned in the engineering designs.
BEERWAH
Issues with lighting and noise were raised by council in a pre-lodgement meeting. However the development application submits that noise and light pollution issues are not significant and that the immediate neighbour is aware of the potential problems and supportive of the application. The planning report estimates that enough tank water storage will be provided for the needs of the guests, and that a proposed secondary treatment plant will be adequate to deal with the effluent generated. The report concludes that the proposed development is a potentially consistent land use and complies with the land use outcomes sought by the Strategic Framework and Overall Outcomes of the Rural Zone Code. Additionally, the application suggests that the proposed development presents an opportunity to strengthen the local service economy through the provision of an additional Function Facility in proximity to the Maleny township, which is acknowledged as a premier wedding destination. To view the application documents, go to www. pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘MCU17/0036’.

Fun for funds
Beerwah CommBank staff are inviting local residents to help them raise funds for the Clown Doctors in the branch this Friday, March 31. From 9.30am, staff will be dressing up in their best clown costumes and holding a guessing competition to help raise funds. Clown Doctors is part of the Humour Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that provides medical clowns to sick kids in hospital, treating them with a different kind of medicine – fun and laughter. Donations to the Clown Doctors can be made at any CommBank branch throughout April or online at www.commbank.com.au/clowndoctors. Mandie Holst, Beerwah CommBank Branch Manager, said, "We’ve been supporting the Clown Doctors for more than 18 years, and it’s a cause our staff are very passionate about. “Through our fundraising day, we hope to help the Clown Doctors achieve their goal of conducting more Clown Rounds in hospitals across Australia." And for those who don’t make it into the branch to see their favourite staff member dressed up, GC&M News will make sure we get some great pics to share with readers in the next edition.

New face in Chaplaincy Committee
Contributed by Chris Bell Lyn Miller, an active member of the Beerwah Catholic Community, is now the new face at the helm of Mike Turner's Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Committee. Lyn takes over from the indomitable Glenda McSwain who has steered the Chaplaincy Committee for the past five years, organising many Chappy concerts at the Baptist Church, Fun Bowls Days, helping tirelessly with Golf Day fundraisers, sausage sizzles and, just last month, organising a most successful Theatre Restaurant at Club Glass House. The committee are very grateful for the support they receive from Glasshouse Country residents and, with $14,000 in funds required during 2017, we are hoping to encourage local business people to consider corporate sponsorship for the Chaplaincy Dinner in May. The Chaplain provides Pastoral Care for high school students, staff and families, and takes part in mediations and conflict resolution. Chaplain wages are raised from fundraising activities, and club, community, school and church donations which are supplemented with a small annual government grant. Call Mike at the school on 5436 5333 if you are able to support with sponsorship and, if you see Lyn selling raffle tickets outside Woollies on April 8, make sure you stop and purchase some.

Sunset Reverie Photographic art does not always have to capture the real world in a photojournalistic sense. It can be used to create feelings and reactions to places in our minds by compositing photographs to produce a new image. This picture was made using a sunset photo to produce the background image and including the boat to produce an image that reflects my feelings when viewing a beautiful sunset where maybe all the elements are not there to produce the perfect photograph. Is this cheating? Not if we are considering this as a work of art any more than it would be if a painter took artistic liberties while producing his image.

Doctoral graduate to launch published novella
An award-winning writer is set to launch a novella, drafted during her USC Doctor of Creative Arts and recently published by a company based in the United States, at Rosetta Books in Maleny on Saturday, April 1 from 4.00pm to 5.00pm. Dr Eileen Herbert-Goodall said she had “never been more excited or relieved in my life” when her thriller, ‘The Sherbrooke Brothers’, was accepted for publication by Moonshine Cove Publishing. “I received my fair share of rejection letters, so this success is a testament to the power of perseverance,” said the author, editor and writing coach. Dr Herbert-Goodall said her coming-of-age story “with a dark twist” involved themes of brotherhood, relationships and masculinity and featured illustrations by Aaron Pearson. “It blends elements of gothic fiction and contemporary literature,” she said. “This is a competitive industry and it’s difficult to get published, but it’s certainly achievable. “I was fortunate to be able to draft the novella under the guidance of Professor Gary Crew and Dr Ross Watkins from USC’s Creative Writing Department.” Dr Herbert-Goodall, who has won short story prizes and been published in journals and anthologies, runs the organisation Field of Words to help other writers get published.
Local graduate tracking trends Tyson Blair has launched into the world of big business after graduating from USC, landing a role with multinational insurance broker Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT). Following his completion of a combined Business and Science degree last year, the 23-year-old Beerwah resident was offered one of just five graduate positions Australiawide with JLT, which has offices in more than 40 countries. Tyson recently completed a week-long induction at the company’s national headquarters in Sydney, where he met with the company’s executive members, and is now working in Brisbane in a data analytics role. The former Beerwah State High School student, who is also a volunteer rural firefighter, said he was delighted to have gained such a competitive position straight out of university. “JLT is a multinational company with some huge corporate clients, so it’s a fantastic opportunity to have been awarded a graduate position here,” he said. “This position in data analytics is perfect for me because I’ll be using a lot of statistical skills I learnt in my Science degree at USC, but in a business setting. “My role is focused on tracking trends in the public sector, and I’m really looking forward to progressing in the company.” Tyson said the knowledge and confidence he had built throughout his time at university had helped him win his first professional position.

‘Country Rocks the Mountain’ is a new music event set to unleash some incredible talent at this year’s Maleny Show. Maleny musician Col Finley has come on board to help organise the event and, with over 25 years of industry experience, he is excited to putting together “something big!” “Maleny is very much a music town, and so it made sense to incorporate that into creating a music event for the show,” says Col. “We’ve played at the show previously and the response has been massive. This year, after talking with the show society members, we thought we would contact some more mates and put together a much bigger entertainment program as a way of celebrating the 80th year milestone of show.” The ‘Country Rocks the Mountain’ event will tie in with the fireworks on Friday night and the rodeo on Saturday, with performers set up on a main stage facing the pavilion from the main arena. Planning a high energy family show, Col knows the secret to an awesome event is to build up an “electric atmosphere” and one of the ideas behind this event is to keep the crowds upbeat and excited around the traditional show drawcards of the fireworks and rodeo. Friday night will feature local talent, with the Col Finley Band (winners of independent band of the year at Tamworth Country Music Festival), Nellie Finley and Will Day performing. Saturday night will feature country music chart topper singer/songwriter Chris Staff and his band headlining along with eight-time Golden Guitar winner Luke O’Shea. ‘Diesel Town’ will also be reforming specially to play on the Saturday. These accomplished musicians are guaranteed to get the crowds jumping from late afternoon and to continue the fun atmosphere into the night. “Be prepared – it’s going to rock and it’s going to be loud!” says Col. “We want to see everyone dancing down the front so bring your whole family – get granny groovin’ and the kids dancing.”

View ladies learn about U3A
At the Glasshouse Country View Club’s recent lunch meeting the guest speaker was Dawn Clark from U3A Sunshine Coast which is a not for profit organisation that offers a large range of courses in yoga, languages, computer skills, etc. The courses are free, but there may be a venue charge. There is a large hub at Caloundra and they hope to expand more into the Hinterland shortly, which will be of interest to many of us living in this area. Our next outing will be on April 5 and will be an ‘Easter Bonnet’ fun morning at the home of one of our members. Our club raises money for the Smith Family and the 'learning for life' program in all their activities. Any ladies who are interested in coming along to one of our functions or who would like to join our club are welcome to contact either Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956. Peachester Trivia Night a success
Contributed by Sally Joyce The large crowd at the Peachester Community Trivia Night, hosted by Peachester State School P&C, has been described as “enthusiastic”, “making lots of noise” with “vigorous competition” between the 15 teams. The questions were testing but complemented by lots of laughs. The success of the night can be attributed to the strong community spirit of the locals who all enjoyed the opportunity for a night out at our local hall catching up with friends young and old. The atmosphere was further enlivened by live ukulele quiz questions. The winning team was Cats and Dogs. The ‘next’ Trivia Night on the Peachester social calendar is already being asked after, with rumours of a mid-July night with easier questions and a winter theme (Flannos and Ugg boots). The great news is that we raised $2,500, which will go towards air-conditioning for the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen. Congratulations all. Many thanks must go to the Quiz Masters Jeannie Thorne and Tom Richter, MC Peter Turner, Peter and Margie Jennings for tirelessly stocking the bar, and Fiona Gray and the fundraising team. Special thanks to our Raffle Sponsors; Peachester Fruit Barn, Fitness First, Joyce Mowing and Gardening, Pasta d’Vine, Hinterland Body and Soul, Sarah Vanderpal Beauty and Yelisa Wearing for donating raffle prizes. Heading away this Easter? Tranquil rainforest, gourmet meals, a daily activity program with like-minded souls – doesn’t your fur baby deserve an awesome break too? If you’re planning a getaway this Easter holiday, maybe it’s time to plan your pet's escape at the Glasshouse Pet Retreat set in 25 acres of tranquil rainforest. Owner Lynnie Bennett said, "We specialise in offering dogs and cats a holiday filled with friends and fun. "Dogs are pack animals and so, if they must be separated from their family pack, then having the company of other like-minded dogs is the very best alternative. “Dogs enjoy daily walks, high quality Australianmade dinners and the chance to make friends with other similar dogs. “For stays longer than two nights, the pampering continues with a complimentary hydro bath just before check out. “Our cats are equally spoiled with premium food and all day access to the indoor and outdoor lounge featuring lots of comfy spots to curl up
and relax the day away with their new feline friends. “We used to be called Glasshouse Boarding Kennels, but we are so much more than just a kennels – we provide a true retreat for your pets,” Lynnie said. To find out more, check out their website www.petretreat.com.au or give them a call on 5493 0707.
Beerwah agent takes out Queensland Rookie of the Year award
Dan Clarke from First National Real Estate Beerwah is ecstatic to have taken out the group’s Queensland Rookie of the Year award at an event held earlier this month. The award was calculated on the number of properties sold and the total amount of sales in the period from January 2016 through to December 2016. While Dan has worked in the Beerwah office for four years, it was only in March of last year
that he became a fully commissioned agent. Incredibly, in just an eight month period, he achieved sales worth $7.9 million dollars for the local office. On the same night he also received a ‘Silver’ achievement award which is given to sales agents who achieve gross office commission for the year of between $150,000 and $299,000. The Beerwah local loves living in the area and envisages incredible growth for the region, and he enjoys continuing to fully immerse himself in the local community. With two outstanding awards under his belt, Dan is motivated to “go for gold” and now has his sights firmly set on achieving a ‘Gold’ award by gaining sales results for this year that offer a total gross office commission of over $299,000! Dan is ecstatic about his recent win!

Let h2 Vision Centres assess and assist with treatment for cataracts “Ye-ouch, now I can see all my wrinkles”. “Now I can see how dirty my house is!!” “I can see the individual leaves on trees now.” “OMG, my husband looks much older than I thought he looked!” These are just some of the hilarious comments patients who’ve had cataract surgery arranged by h2 Vision Centres in Sippy Downs, have had to say. We asked A/Professor Leo Hartley, a medical practitioner and optometrist to tell us more about cataracts. Here’s what he had to say. In Queensland cataracts are most commonly due to aging and sun damage. A cataract forms when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy leading to a decrease in vision. Cataracts often develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes. It’s like leaving a piece of plastic in the sun. It becomes cloudy. Symptoms may include faded colours, blurry vision, halos around light, trouble with bright lights, and trouble seeing at night. This cloudiness can sometimes initially be corrected by glasses but as it progresses the only way to improve vision is to have the cataract removed. Often when older patients say ‘the latest glasses just aren’t clear enough’ or they need frequent spectacle lens changes, it’s due to cataracts! By 60 years of age, 50% of people will have some degree of cataract, even if they have perfectly healthy eyes. According to a 2012 WHO report on Global data on visual impairments, if left untreated, cataracts are the cause of half of blindness and 33% of visual impairment worldwide. The good news is that with the right assessment and the current advances in eye technology, removal of cataracts is a routine operation. Cataract removal is a straight forward day surgery procedure. Only one eye is operated on at a time. The second eye is operated on one to two weeks after the initial procedure. On the day, the patient is usually given a medication that makes them drowsy and relaxed.
Most patients just drift off to sleep and wake after the procedure. Eye drops are used to numb the eye and the natural lens in the eye is removed. It is replaced by a clear intraocular lens (or IOL). The procedure takes around 15 minutes. The intra-ocular lens (IOL) will last beyond a lifetime. Prior to surgery, at a separate appointment, highly accurate measurements are taken of the eyes, using highly specialised instruments. This information is used to calculate the correct intra-ocular lenses (IOLs) to be inserted. IOLs can be individually customised to eliminate the need for distance glasses. An intra-ocular lens (IOL) can correct astigmatism, myopia (near sightedness) and hyperopia (far sightedness). As the IOL is not able to change focus, the focus will be set at distance for one or both eyes. Sometimes it is set for near for one eye and distance for the other. Multifocal IOLs are sometimes used as well. These have side-effects that can be discussed prior to their use. They are usually not ideal for night driving. Complications from cataract surgery are rare and most people will experience a mild pain or redness and irritation for a week after the procedure. Watery or dry eye is common but will settle down over time. Five to six weeks following surgery it is recommended to return for a follow up appointment where the macula and retina and IOL are checked for any post-operative issues. The eye pressure and glasses script are also checked. At h2 Vision Centres we can assess your eyes and if necessary arrange the procedure for you with an Ophthalmologist (eye surgeon). The pre-surgery appointment and IOL measurements are done here at our practice with myself and our team. For more information please don’t hesitate to call us.

In praise of Proteaceae With Spencer and Karen Shaw Amongst the unique flora of Australia, the members of the Proteaceae family are indeed a special bunch worthy of cultivation. They are a particularly ancient lineage of plants evolving in the Gondwanan super continent and are found in South America and South Africa and Oceania (Australia, New Guinea and the Pacific Islands). Some great Proteaceae currently stocked by Forest Heart Eco-Nursery include cultivar Grevilleas and Banksias; local woodland and heathland Banksias and Hakeas native to South-East Queensland; rainforest trees including Athertonia diversifolia, Stenocarpus spp. (Wheel of Fire and Scrub Beefwood) and last, but not least, Queensland Tree Waratah and NSW Waratahs. One of the interesting adaptations of the Proteaceae family is the development of proteoid roots. These dense clusters of fine rootlets increase the surface area of their root systems dramatically and these, in association with mycorrhizal fungi, enable the plants to make available to themselves more minerals and nutrients in impoverished soils than would otherwise be available, particularly phosphorous. This is why we have special ‘native’ (low phosphorous) fertilisers; because your average Banksia or Grevillea will poison itself with too much phosphorous if we flood the soil with this nutrient. Many Rainforest Proteaceae are less sensitive when it comes to artificial or natural fertilisers as are rainforest plants in general because they are adapted to higher nutrient environments. Enjoy our unique Proteaceae and their spectacular form and flowers.
Environment Waterwatch & Landcare Open Day Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRWL) have commenced their war on Madeira Vine and Cat’s Claw Creeper in the Mooloolah catchment. Working in collaboration with landowners, Healthy Land & Water, Sunshine Coast Council, Department of Heritage and Environment and the Burnett Mary Regional Group, the Subtropical Lowland Rainforest Recovery Project aims to lessen the threat posed to native vegetation and, in particular, to riparian vegetation by these two Weeds of National Significance. As part of the rainforest recovery project, a biocontrol beetle breeding facility has been established at the MRWL Nursery on Steve Irwin Way at Glenview. At the facility, different ways of breeding three types of insects – Leaf Mining Jewel Beetle, Tingid Bug and Madeira Beetle – will be trialled. These biocontrol agents will form part of an integrated approach to managing Madeira Vine and Cat’s Claw Creeper. After release the bugs will be monitored for their effectiveness, including when and how many to release to give the highest establishment rate. The beetles will be available for purchase and general release from April 2017. MRWL is in need of volunteers in all areas of the journey from growing the host plants, to feeding the insects, and their release in prepared locations. If you would like to be involved in this exciting new venture please contact MRWL on 5494 5074. An open day will be held at the Mooloolah Native Nursery, Steve Irwin Way (at the Holcim sand quarry), on Thursday, April 6 from 8.00am – 4.00pm with the launch of the biocontrol facility and tour starting at 9.00am, with a free barbeque and morning tea on the day. Everyone who drops by the nursery on Thursday, April 6 gets immediate entry into the lucky door prize with two $50 plant vouchers and a $25 Kenny's at Mooloolah voucher to be drawn at the close of the day, lucky door prizes, and balloons for the kids. Members of the community are encouraged to visit for the day, see the operation and ask questions. Guided tours of the general nursery operations will also be available. Details can be found at the MRWL website: www. mooloolahwaterwatchandlandcare.org For further queries contact Tanya Ellison on email projects.mrwl@gmail.com

with Ann McGrath Someone I know well is often heard to ask the question, “Are you growing plants or are you creating habitat?” Good question, the answer to which will determine what you plant, if anything, and what you do with your plants. I’m relatively new at this idea of growing bush and am slowly beginning to understand the freedom that comes with growing habitat. I don’t need to spray! For a healthy wildlife habit to exist, all levels of the food chain need to exist. That means the bugs that are chewing all of the leaves need to be left there in order to feed whatever eats them, so they can grow well, so that whatever eats them eats well, and so on. I don’t need to rake or chainsaw or burn! Branches and leaves falling off trees is good news because they provide habitat for reptiles, small marsupials, small birds and all ground dwelling life. I don’t need to prune! With the aim of having a wide variety of plants from grasses up to tall trees all growing together, seeding and reproducing, why would I want to prune? We are so fortunate in our area of the world that we still have a very diverse array of native plants and wildlife, but we need to not take it for granted.

School News Cooking up a storm
On your bike for Ride2School
Contributed by Deb Ives The not-for-profit Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation (SAKGF) supports the delivery of pleasurable food education in schools across Australia. Beerwah Primary School is one of the 10% of primary schools participating in the program, growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh and delicious food with their teachers and peers. During the last term, Year 4 students participated in the program once a week, and had great fun in both the kitchen and garden classes. Food education is about children experiencing the joy of digging in the garden, picking fresh veggies, smelling and tasting the food they prepare, and sharing the experience with their classmates and helpers. The aim of every class is to teach positive food habits through fun, hands-on learning. The children will prepare, cook, set the table, serve and enjoy food around the table, engaging in conversation as they eat. Lastly the students complete the process with tidying and washing up, and putting all utensils away. The opportunity for all year levels to eventually participate in the school’s Kitchen Garden builds on the SAKGF philosophy, “Our vision is for every Australian child to form positive food habits for life, through an experience-based kitchen garden program.”
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School students recently pedalled towards healthier habits as they participated in Ride2School Day. It was fantastic to see so many students riding, scooting or walking to school to take part in the event, which aims to get children to be more active. Principal Brendan Bopf explained how leaving the car at home has many benefits. “It is great for your health, great for the environment and also helps to reduce traffic around our school.” As an added incentive, Sunshine Coast Council had prizes up for grabs for students who registered online for the event. Thank you to the many parents and carers who rode or walked with their children to school. Children were encouraged to ride their bikes to school

Mooloolah State School softball winners Contributed by Michelle Lenz Our Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Glass House Mountains recently to participate in the Interschool Sports Softball Championships. The schools that participated were Glass House Mountains State School, Maleny State School, Beerwah State School, Delaney’s Creek State School, Saint Michael’s College from Caboolture, Glasshouse Christian College and Mooloolah. All the students had a lot of fun and played hard, with many of the students having never played the game before. Mooloolah State School has not competed in the interschool sports softball for many years. So it was a great surprise and honour to have a win. The competition was held over a few weeks. The boys’ team finished with a solid fourth place whilst the girls’ team never lost a game and became the Interschool Sport Softball Champions for 2017. When I spoke to one of the captains they said, “We were so excited to win – it was awesome, especially since it was our first time competing in softball.” The girls were very strong in their team effort and had amazing win after amazing win. The girls’ team was made up of 11 girls: Maddy Lencz, Abby Ward, Hollin Fish, Alyssa Hayman, Katie and Ruby Pettingill, Ruby King, Gema Atkinson, Tamsyn Douglas, Hannah Jenkins and Tahlia Parry. What a fantastic competition. Mooloolah State School would like to thank the other schools, all the students, teachers, parents and everyone else involved. Well done.
United in Harmony
Students from Maleny took their message to the streets with representatives from both Maleny high and primary schools along with students from the River School joining forces last Tuesday to celebrate Harmony Day. Promoting messages of inclusiveness, belonging and respect, students sang five songs at Tesch Park and in the main street of Maleny. Local musicians, Steven John, Carmel Givens and Paula BrackenboroughWilliams spent the weeks leading up to the performance supporting students in rehearsals and then accompanying them on the day. Deputy of the River School, Ann Donoghoe, said, “It is wonderful to see state and independent schools unite to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity. “We are inspired by the positive messages about belonging our students wrote on over 500 prayer flags which have been proudly flying in the main street of Maleny in the lead up to Harmony Day. “The flags promote diversity and strength and the importance of uniting so that the message of ‘we all belong’ becomes a reality.”
World’s Greatest Shave The Student Centre at Beerwah State High School was full of spectators for this year’s World’s Greatest Shave on Friday, March 17. There was a hive of activity with students and staff being brave and having their legs waxed, heads shaved and hair being coloured. Donations, hair colouring and the profits from the Student Council sausage sizzle will see over $400.00 being donated to the Leukaemia Foundation this year. Thank you to all students who participated in the event. A special thank you to our staff and parent volunteers – it couldn’t happen without you. School Principal Glen Robinson was very brave to go under the clippers

Landsborough central for writers Gondor Writers' Centre recently moved from Kilcoy to its new location at 19 Caloundra Street, Landsborough. Following extensive renovations they have completely transformed the old building, which for many years has been home to a number of coffee shops. Part business owner, Elaine Ouston, explained that after operating the Writers' Centre for a couple of years at Kilcoy they had realised that the location was too far for many of their clients to get to easily. Their writing workshop program has started and the services they offer are many – from writing workshops, editing and manuscript appraisals and mentorships, to book set-up for publishing. During the upcoming school holidays they will also be running writing camps as well as art and writing workshops for children and young people aged between 7 and 15. The facilities at the new building are set up for workshops with a large tiled room downstairs, a car park, a lovely private garden area, and public bathroom facilities. The premises are also offered as a venue for other people's workshops, book launches, meetings, and small celebrations. The beautiful garden area is available for use as well as the main building. Living - History Backstory of Camping Reserve
The old Glasshouse Camping Reserve has existed for over 100 years, adjacent to Coonowrin Creek and accessed from Old Gympie Road. Anecdotal information from the descendants of the Bankfoot House families says road travelers camped in the Reserve from the 1870s with some coming up to Bankfoot House to sample Mrs Grigor’s home cooking. The road to Gympie was opened in 1868. Recently, the Friends of Bankfoot House have been able to confirm the official origins of the Camping Reserve. A copy of the original survey document of 30 June 1874 describes the 17 acre Reserve as Lot 88, Portion No.4, Parish of Beerwah, County of Canning. The Reserve was excised from William Grigor’s Portion No.4 of 334 acres. The 1874 Survey document also shows a Government Hut located on the Reserve. The Hut, no longer in existence, is believed to be a Telegraph Line Hut and may have been part of the northern Telegraph Line out of Brisbane which had reached Bowen by 1866. Unofficially, the question remains, “which came first, the Camping area or the road?” The Camping Reserve did not receive formal approval by ‘His Excellency the Governor in Council’ until 21 August 1913. The Cobb & Co Coach service ran along the Gympie Road from 1868 to 1879, so any travelers camping in the Reserve at that time would have been aware of the noon arrival of the coach at Bankfoot House and may have joined the coach passengers for lunch.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News has played a vital part in establishing my business I started advertising approximately nine years ago and over that time it has consistently brought me new clients. The newspaper is a nice quick read in our busy society with enough information to keep residents within the area up to date on local events and services.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who is establishing a new business.

with Pharmasave Beerwah Pharmacy Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a heart rhythm disturbance which, if left untreated, could lead to slower blood flow, potentially leading to clotting in the major organs, which could travel towards the brain and cause a stroke. The risk of stroke in people affected with AF is five times greater than in the healthy population. Furthermore, the occurrence of AF increases with age, from 5% in adults over 65, up to 14% among those over 85 years old, and unfortunately over 50% of Australians over the age of 65 have never heard of AF. Other comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism and heart failure increase the risk of developing AF. Unfortunately, AF does not present with any distinct symptoms and, as a result, up to 100,000 Australians are left undiagnosed. Hence the screening and early detection of AF enables the initiation of appropriate treatment and movement to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Pharmasave Beerwah Pharmacy provides a free Atrial Fibrillation screening using the clinically-proven Mirolife Afib monitor as a reliable tool for early detection which can be referred to your GP for further monitoring.

‘United Kingdom’ plays at Maleny
My Outback Life
A solid historical drama set in the UK and Africa, ‘United Kingdom’ is the Saturday night screening of the Maleny Film Society in the Maleny Community Centre. The production comes from Great Britain and is 111 minutes in duration, and classified PG. Hailed as “a beautiful view of a piece of untold history”, it tells of the 1948 romance between Prince Seretse Khama of Bechuanaland (now Botswana) and British office worker Ruth Williams. David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike play the lovers who caused controversy and met opposition in both countries and both families. The main villain is the British government, personified by Alastair Canning (Jack Devonport), England’s representative in South Africa, at a time when apartheid was under construction and bi-racial leadership of a neighbouring country was in direct contradiction. Strategic interest in Africa’s minerals, especially diamonds, was key to political intrigue. Director Amma Asante follows her success with ‘Belle’ in uncovering hidden jewels of true history for this bi-racial drama. Doors open at 7.00pm for dinner catered by Spaghetti Junction. Members may pre-book online or via the Maleny Information Centre. For more information visit www.malenyfilmsociety.info
Rosetta Books will be hosting an Author Event with Toni Tapp Coutts, where you can hear all about her latest book ‘My Outback Life’, on Wednesday, April 5 at 5.30pm for 6.00pm. Born and raised in the Northern Territory, Toni Tapp Coutts has had an extraordinary life. 'My Outback Life' captures Toni's time living and thriving in the Gulf Country. Having grown up on the massive Killarney cattle station near Katherine, Toni was well prepared when her husband Shaun took a job at McArthur River Station, 600 kilometres from the Queensland border. Toni became cook, counsellor, housekeeper and nurse to the host of people who lived at and visited the station. She fell deeply in love with the Gulf Country. Filled with the warmth and humour readers will remember from her first book, 'A Sunburnt Childhood', this next chapter in Toni's life is both an adventure and a heart warming memoir, and will introduce readers to a part of Australia few have experienced. Bookings for the night are essential. Tickets cost $15.00 and include drinks and nibbles. To purchase tickets, phone 5435 2134 or email reading@ rosettabooks.com.au

In the Garden with Brownie
Jobs for the yard in April
• Plant sweet peas, snow peas, sugar snap peas, climbing peas and bush peas. Plant as either seed or seedlings into soil that has had some dolomite added. Maybe also try asparagus peas. • Start to reduce the frequency you mow the lawn and start raising the blade height to allow the grass to keep a reasonable amount of leaf during the cooler months. • Fertilise your roses, especially if you haven’t done it for a few years. • It’s time to dig up, divide and replant your hippeastrum and lilium bulbs. • Carefully cut off side shoots of bromeliads to create new plants. Plant these in the garden or in pots using a well-drained potting mix. • Go around the garden and take a critical look, removing plants that don’t inspire you anymore. Now is a good time to replace them. • Prune the passionfruit vines, cut the laterals back to 2 buds. • It’s a good time to re-pot potted plants and hanging baskets. Add a slow release fertiliser to the potting mix. • Garlic can be planted until the end of April – planting after this date reduces the size of the bulbs. • Try not to be tempted by displays in supermarkets of potted tulips and hyacinths, as they are very unlikely to do well in our climate. • Lightly trim back lavender and rosemary, but not too hard – just enough to trim off the flower heads and harden the plant for winter. Vegetables Plant beetroot, broccoli, radish, cabbage, leafy lettuce, carrot, celery, cauliflower, Asian greens, garlic, leeks, spring onion, potatoes, sweet potato, turnip, kohlrabi, capsicum, chilli, silver beet, beans and tomato.
Flowers Plant alyssum, petunia, marigold, carnation, sweet pea, gaillardia, everlasting daisy, livingstone daisy, sunflower, verbena, pansy, viola, primula, snapdragon, nemesia, iceland poppy, dianthus, cleome and salvia.
Learn about Japanese Gardens Dr Richard Whitlow is an author and garden enthusiast and on Wednesday, April 19, at the Beerwah Library between 1.00pm and 2.30pm he will present a session that explores Japanese gardens. Discover the cultural roots, aesthetics, and history of Japanese gardens. Learn about the different garden types and design concepts. Enjoy illustrated examples of some of these gardens in Australia. A well-designed Japanese garden is a pleasing display of colour, texture, balance and harmony. Take home information to create your own space. Attendance is free, however bookings are essential.

Know the rules before planting on the nature strip There has been a lot spoken and written over the past 12 months or so via multiple media platforms on the issue of community gardens. There are many examples of community gardens being run across the Sunshine Coast … some on private lands, some on Council facilities and some ‘guerrilla gardening style’ on roadside verges and nature strips. A particular touchy example is the Urban Food Street project at Buderim. Here, residents have taken to extensive plantings of fruit trees and vegetable gardens throughout their nature strips, much to the frustration of the Sunshine Coast Council. Equally frustrating for the residents, is the recent response by Council who, just following their policy guidelines, are requiring permits and approvals to be applied for. And considering the group running the Buderim enterprise is now a commercial business, Council may feel that they have an obligation to ensure that it is managed correctly and safely. It is a timely reminder that there definitely are rules if you want to do anything on the Council controlled roadside verges. So, under Council Local law you will need to apply for a permit if you wish to plant, clear or damage vegetation in a Council controlled area (such as a road verge). Basic maintenance, like mowing the grass or weeding without a permit is okay. A Council information sheet sets out that permits will be granted for things like planting a shrub or creating a small garden, as well as clearing or damaging low value vegetation during installing improvements (i.e. driveway, fencing). If the work is part of a community group project such as a community garden or similar, Council may have some flexibility. Council is also responsible for managing street trees, so if you’d like a street tree planted (or trimmed), just contact the Customer Service Centre and Council will assess what they can do to accommodate your request. To find out more, you can contact Council on 5475 7272.

One of my favourite Bible personalities is found in the book of Daniel. A young Jewish man, Daniel was taken captive and sent to Babylon, a mighty city on the Euphrates River in the area we now know as Iraq. He, along with three of his young friends, faced difficulties with customary dietary situations, where the four respectfully stood for their beliefs. Perhaps Daniel’s most dangerous and memorable situation occurred later in his life when he was confined overnight with several hungry lions – and he survived to tell the tale, often referred to as "Daniel in the lions den." Daniel saw his survival as a direct result of intervention by God. He already had a similar salvation event when his life was again saved by being able to tell King Nebuchadnezzar about the king’s dream of a mighty statue and a rock. The statue had a head of gold, chest of silver, belly of brass, legs of iron and feet of iron and clay. Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that as king he was the head of gold, but other
nations would eventually replace him. After 20 years mulling over this prophetic warning, Nebuchadnezzar built a nine-storey-high all-gold statue of himself. Then when Daniel appears to be out of town, the king arranges for leaders from all over his kingdom to come to worship the statue. Daniel's friends, who are now grown men, and leaders in the Babylonian state, refuse to bow before the golden image. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stay standing and end up facing the king’s fury. Johnny Cash used to sing a song about that event, called ‘The Fourth Man in the Fire’. Three were thrown into a furnace, but the king sees four. The fourth "is like the son of God", Nebuchadnezzar exclaims. Debate as to the meaning still continues today. I see this to mean that Jesus Christ provided salvation on that day for these three men hundreds of years before He came as a baby to Bethlehem. Perhaps we all can have the "Fourth Man" by our side.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Submitted by Brenda Briese Finally!! Beautiful rain. Dams on the course are all full, including the new one which was sunk in December last year. It's still very very humid though. But we're very happy. To the results: Saturday, March 18 was our monthly Mixed day and we played a 4Ball Stableford Aggregate with a field of 44 (22 Pairs). Winners were Heather Henn and Keith Wallace 70pts OCB from R/up Tam Reid and Greg Humphries 70pts. BRD went to 66pts. Thursday, March 23 was a 4Ball Best Ball Stableford. As there were a few cancellations we had Mystery Partners. So you didn't know who you partnered until you finished. It was a bit of fun and we had some surprised winners! They were, Mavis Brimelow and Lyn Steele 40pts OCB (again) from R/up Pauline Laurie and Oriel Lyon 40pts. NTPs: (5) Sonia Kenway, (16) Barbara Day, (18) Mavis Brimelow. BRD went to 37pts. Good golfing and have fun. Lyn Steele, Pauline Laurie, Oriel Lyon and Mavis Brimelow

MARCH 29 2017
Contributed by Neil Lovett At last the long awaited Pennant season has arrived. Last Wednesday we began the Lochwood Shield competition with a resounding victory over Bribie Island, winning both singles and the doubles, despite rain interruptions. Scores (Range players first) were Nick Cram 18 Ken Wallman 17, Ken Barker 26 (maximum possible score) Monica Ackland 2, and Donna Manning and Ken Barker 19 Ken Wallman and Monica 13. Our Ken Barker played the best croquet of his relatively brief career, with two breaks of ten consecutive hoops. In intra-club games, after the monthly business meeting on March 18, Sarah Widin beat Ken 8 - 4. The next day Kath Smith and Sarah beat Donna 12 - 9. Thursday brought better weather, and Carol Johnson played Yve Clark in Aussie Croquet, losing 10 - 14. In Association Croquet Helen Andrews and John Crofts beat Vince Carbery and Wendy Whitby (with Ken substituting for Vince in the last few minutes) 9 - 8. Our lawns are situated in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road. For information about joining, coaching, hours of play or hiring please ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
Witta Tennis Club
Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails managed to squeeze in a game against Maroochydore Sapphires after heavy rain. Although the Sapphires were the winners on the day, the Wagtails improved their score from the first game of the season against the Sapphires. Thanks to Gerry, Janet, Eunice and Sonia. Whistlers played at Witta, against Caloundra Racquettes. It was cloudy and looked dark, so we hurried to play. Lots of good shots came from both teams, but we managed to win at the points. One of the last sets had to stop because of the rain, but we had good win. Score was 44-12 games, 7-0 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats played hard however were beaten by the better team on the day. The team of Stacey, Libby, Jenie and Anne managed to win 25 games. We look forward to playing the No Faults at home next time. Social tennis is played on Mondays at 8.00am and Saturdays at 1.00pm. All welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au

The season kicks off at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, April 8 at 3.00pm in a match up with the Easts Tigers. A revamped Division 1 sees the emergence of three new, highly credentialed teams, Easts Tigers, Brothers Ipswich and West Brisbane. The new teams are backed by Leagues Clubs and are well resourced, with the playing rosters recruited from other Clubs, and from Rugby Union and Rugby 7s. All boast a string of International and other representative players. Beerwah captain, Samantha Holder, said the new clubs are just what the competition needs as the Women’s game progresses. The five Division 1 teams will be closely matched so that the standard of games will be very high. Beerwah unfortunately lost five experienced players to West Brisbane, with the other established
Division 1 team, last year’s Premiers Burleigh, losing a similar number to Easts Tigers. “Beerwah have recruited well in the off season though," Samantha said. "Two of our Beerwah juniors, Amalee McClellan and Matilda Law, an exciting new young player from Rugby 7s, Mili Reed, and our returning youngsters Abbey Templeman, Sophie Ebbage and Taylia Fragale give us a very exciting, youthful feel.” The Beerwah team has also hooked up with Division 2 side the Western Fillies, based in Toowoomba, so that each week excess players from the Beerwah team can get a game with the Division 2 side if needed. For further information about the Beerwah Bulldogs Women’s team, contact Samantha Holder on 0412 022 514.

Winner on the day was Doug Johnstone, Runner-Up went to Paul Lowe and Third place went to Kevin Reynolds. Saturday, March 25: Our men played in an 18 Hole Single Stableford Event despite the showers. First place went to Brent Jesberg with 37 points, Runner-Up was Mike Finley with 36 points on a count-back from Third place winner Jackson McCormack, also with 36 points. The rain this week tried to dampen our golfing spirits but our ladies and men braved the rain and persevered. down. Overall Glasshouse had a loss. Glasshouse 2 played away against Pomona. The pairs team got up with a win while the triples had a draw. Hinterland Men played at home against Nambour Heights. Our men put up great fight to win two rinks but were not good enough to have an outright win. The Expression of Interest sheet is up in office shed for Men's Pennants for 2017 and we are after more players. This year our club is in Division 1 and 4. Nominations for Club Championship Men’s Pairs are open. Entries have to be in by Thursday, April 6. Both navy blue and white pants can be worn.
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Ian Hansen Tuesday, March 22: Six pairs played and the first games produced two wins, two losses and one drawn game. However, in the second games both of the first game winners were beaten, thus leaving the two Pairs that drew the first game as possible winners. Peter Duffy and Relma Godfrey had a +5 victory but Sandra Kapetanic and Ian Hansen recorded +11 and so ran out winners with one and a half wins +11. The Jackpot wasn’t won when +38 was drawn from the barrel, so has started to build up after being won two weeks in a row. Wednesday, March 23: The evening’s Social Bowls turned into somewhat of a fiasco with both rain and power cuts to contend with. However, all enjoyed the evening even though they had to play under car and Mobile Phone lights to finish the evening. Hopefully the weather will be kinder this

week for the last fun night before the competition recommences on April 5. Please contact the club to nominate your team for the next round of fixtures to ensure your team doesn’t miss out. Friday, March 25: Four rinks of Scroungers were played in the afternoon and the winners on their respective rinks were John Long, John Kapetanic, Allan Cook and Ian Chatterton. Not a solitary Sponsors’ Prize winner was present to claim their prizes and the lucky Money Board winner was Jenny Hansen. This week is a busy one which kicked off with the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Monday, Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, Social Bowls Wednesday evening and Scroungers Friday afternoon. Finally a reminder about the Championships and the AGM. The draw for the Championships will be on the board at the club later this week and the AGM is Saturday, April 1, at 2.00pm.
Bee Gees Football Club
Contributed by Kevin Leaman Bee Gees Premier Men’s team played their first home fixture on Saturday against unbeaten top of the table Maroochydore. The Premier Men’s reserves took part in a thrilling game. The score was 2-2 after only 10 minutes, with Matt Kennedy scoring twice for Bee Gees early on. Late goals from Ronnie Woulfe and Matt Teljega saw them win 4-3, keeping them at the top of the table. So then came the highly anticipated Premier game. With both teams having good starts to the season, this was always going to be a tight game. Bee Gees came out of the blocks the quickest, they had the majority of the possession, Jeremy Lynch and Cameron Nairn turning the Maroochydore defence inside out creating numerous chances that were squandered. The score at half time was 0-0. Bee Gees again dominated the second half, having most of the possession against a well organised Maroochydore defence. Daniel Machell opened the scoring after 51 minutes following a free kick wide on the right hand side. After missing several chances, Cameron Nairn seemed to put the game out of reach, placing his shot into the corner of the net from 15 yards, giving Bee Gees a 2 goal lead. Bee Gees Keeper, Damien Cox, pulled off a fantastic penalty save to keep the Green Machine’s hopes of beating the table toppers alive. Maroochydore always looked dangerous on the break, Anthony Scarff scoring after 87 minutes giving the home crowd a nervous few minutes until the end of the game. This would be Bee Gees' best Premier Men’s result for many years, keeping them in the top four after suffering a defeat last week away to Noosa. Coach Daniel Carew named Damien Cox as the man of the match, but to be fair he could have named 11 as this was a superb display from every player in a Green and White shirt. Next week the boys travel to Caloundra which is another mouth-watering tie. On Monday, our Division 3 Women’s team played their first game at Woombye. They are supported by our Under 16 Girls who, after a very strong 5-0 win at Woombye last week, came back to earth, losing at home by the same score line to a very strong Coolum team. Both of these teams are sponsored by Roy’s Earthmoving & Plant Hire.

Week beginning 29/03/17 LEO July 23 - August 22 The New Moon in Aries on the 27th stirred up all the Cardinal sign activity for the month of March. With a heavy aspect of the Jupiter Pluto end of month extremes, all this could bring power struggles that become volatile quickly. Perhaps Venus, going retrograde in the first week of April, brings news from an old loved one! VIRGO August 23 - September 22 This last week of the month indicates your need to stay clear of any struggles or differences of opinion that do not directly involve you. So you are to play it smart, cool and controlled, as the last week disturbs many of those around you. Enjoy the company of genial people. That would include getting a break from old routines. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The wonderful benefit of having the New Moon this week, in Aries, opposite your sign, certainly gives any troubled relationship a fresh start. This could also bring a new person into your sights. You should be able to communicate with what is known as ‘the ring of truth’. Pure logic and reason can return you to smart leadership. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The period from the 23rd of this month to the 31st sees many friends getting into silly arguments. There is a need for balance between male and female which is really the key to relationships, fiscal responsibilities and work duties. Each person should show affection to their dear ones as the New Moon week sees great reorganization.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 The New Moon on the 28th in the sign of Aries works well with your fire sign Sagittarius. As Venus comes up to go retrograde the first week in April, all this brings you an assessment of your love life, and gives you a second chance for any resolution. Failing that, when Venus goes direct things may look and feel quite different. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You should not rely on concrete deals and practical communication in the last week of this month as it is unfortunately purely ‘rough and tumble’. Relations are impacted when Venus goes retrograde and Mars enters Taurus within a few days. So the following week, having negotiated changes this week, you will feel secure again. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Because there are clashes between the planet of communication, Mercury, to Jupiter and Pluto, power struggles may come with some harsh words. Just hold back and let the Aries New Moon create a fresh start, rather than add emotional furore to old fires. Don’t listen to rumour or gossip. Weekend sees excellent dining rendezvous. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The planets for the whole week provide you with money, both earning and spending it! It’s beneficial to give more weight to the long range purchases, rather than short term impulsive buys. Enhance the delights of your home life so you, family and friends can enjoy them. Words and acts of love add mightily to a beneficial week!

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com ARIES March 21 - April 20 Progressive high tech ideas create breakthroughs for you as you enjoy working with new perceptions. Probably this was the result of the New Moon week in your sign. That was accompanied by a pleasing Venus. You feel ready to push forward with all your plans, but make your expansion moderate and legal. You feel a high sense of self worth. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 This New Moon week points you to confidential concerns. There are developments you should keep to yourself, and for good reason. You may also see someone starting a new love affair. The weekend sees a time of settling arrangements of a financial nature. The weekend is positive for hitting stores off the beaten track! GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Listen to your instincts this week and set a disciplined agenda. This New Moon week sees that you have helpful contacts and good organisation behind you. Associates’ minds change quite suddenly, possibly due to hot technical news. While expansion is part of your agenda this week, so is the need to be moderate. Quiet time is needed. CANCER June 22 - July 22 You have got a challenge by Mercury to Pluto and another one by Mercury to Jupiter. This all leads to an extreme challenge by the end of the month with Jupiter and Pluto. This series of planetary aspects would certainly destabilize most people’s security. Decisions made in your personal or professional life see the past disappearing.

How to get to heaven from Ireland This is a true Story from an Irish Sunday School Teacher. I was testing children in my Dublin Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven. I asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into heaven?" "No!" the children answered. "If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the

Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan and Dr David Marley work exclusively with MIS Implants and the MIS Implant Centre in Melbourne and the great majority of implants are placed using the MIS M-GUIDE which is computer generated and enables very precise and atraumatic implant placement.
