A FEW stories this week talk to the changing face of giving (and it’s the season for it after all).

Firstly the imminent dissolution of the Beerwah Sportsground Committee.

This indepth story compiled by Sonia Isaacs (P4-5) drills into the challenges volunteers can face when coming up against an ever-widening bureaucracy.

I get the sense that the operation had become unwieldy for a small group of dedicated volunteers and without the broader support of council to facilitate and support decisions, it was only going to end one way.

But you can’t take away the dedication of the committee and Helen and David Weil feel let down and frustrated.

It’s a complicated issue but at the same time governments, especially local, want and need volunteers to run the many programs - especially in the Hinterland - that build and create bonded communities and those people giving their time for free need to feel supported and valued to keep up their dedication.

Also in this edition is Tom Malone’s vale.

Tom and Desley were two of the first people I met this year when joining the paper, and made me feel very welcome.

Little did I know then how much they were part of the fabric of the area and talking to Desley following Tom’s passing certainly opened my eyes to how much one person can give and achieve in a lifetime - all with little fanfare.

His contribution to so many groups over the years is something to behold and how he fitted that all in while working and raising a family is a tremendous effort.

Tom was even writing out fire permits in his role in the rural fire brigade just days before he passed away (p19).

His family weren’t surprised.

In an era now where it’s easy to argue there’s not much time for anything else, there are plenty of people in our part of the world, showing that’s probably not the case.

End of era for Jen’s

Rotary raises $9k

THE INAUGURAL Maleny Rotary Golf Day was a great success both as a fundraiser and as a fun day.

Over $9000 were raised through fantastic sponsor and player support.

A donation of $5000 was recently made to Orange Sky to assist them continue with their support of the Maleny homeless people.

Anderson Plumbing and Roofing help in this donation was of great assistance with their donation of $1000.

A donation of $4000 was also made through Rotary to assist in the international project to help the displaced people in the Ukraine.

The next Rotary Golf Day will be held on 8th September 2023.

Woolies, IGA targeted in early hours

THIEVES targeted grocery stores stealing cash and cigarettes in a series of raids across Maleny and Landsborough in the early hours of Sunday, November 20.

CCTV footage released as part of a police investigation show four people in balaclavas and hoodies filling shopping trolleys with cigarettes from the Maleny Woolworths. Between 2am and 3am, five people forced their way into three separate businesses in two stolen vehicles, a black 2011 BMW 120i with Queensland registration 269BG5 and a white 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander with Queensland registration 142EP5 and forced entry at the addresses before stealing various property.

The first business, on Maple Street, Maleny was targeted around 2.04am; around 2.12am they hit the Woolworths at Maleny on Bunya Street before targeting a business on Railway Street, Landsborough at 2.30am.

Investigators are appealing for information from the public and have released vision of the suspects who are believed to be connected to these series of offences. The released vision is from the Maleny Woolworths.

Future is grim for ground committee

AFTER battling financial uncertainty, a perceived lack of transparency around bureaucratic process, and increasing levels of

the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee Inc. (BSMC) will most likely seek to dissolve their involvement in the community held sportsground.

After decades of service to manage and maintain one of the largest sports grounds on the Sunshine Coast, the community-led organisation is considering options to wind up.

Indications that ongoing restrictions on

aging volunteer committee on the brink of burnout, and snowballing compliance and ground maintenance obligations against a backdrop of a dramatically reduced financial capacity suggests the ongoing survival of the BSMC to be almost impossible.

While the outcome is yet to be finalised, it would appear a proposal put forward by Council at the end of October at a meeting with the Sportsground Management Committee and their affiliates will be accepted by the Committee in early 2023.

Committee president David Weil said he felt the volunteer committee members had been “driven to the wall” especially

activities and previously permitted uses of the grounds. He acknowledged that some of his frustration could be the product of belonging to a different generation where community groups operated collaboratively and successfully without the myriad of rules and regulations required today.

“We have just simply run out of puff to continue to fight to maintain the sportsground as a community held sports and recreation facility,” he said.

“After years of struggling to keep our campgrounds viable and with all the licence restrictions imposed on power and facility usage, responding to increases in Council regulations and compliance requirements, and the huge financial outlay and commitment to maintain the community grounds – we are ready to give up!”

He said the October 31 meeting with Council offered three proposals for the committee to consider including an opportunity for the committee to continue until the expiration of their current management lease in 2027. However, with a Council decision to restrict camping to only a handful of events throughout the year, the income required to effectively manage the grounds had been so reduced, it had effectively made operation of the BSMC unviable.

While the future of the management of the sportsground is still in the process of discussion, the tenure proposal put forward by the Sunshine Coast Council will most likely be adopted by Easter 2023. The proposal recommends BSMC surrenders its lease and responsibility for management of the Sportsground in favour of Council taking on maintenance obligations, with the various user groups and affiliates entering into individual trustee permits.

Over the decades, the Beerwah Sportsground has been home to a diverse range of community gatherings, events, sporting clubs and recreational organisations. Although once customary practice, the community management model is now relatively unique, especially for multi-use facilities within our region, and committee members speculate that a move for Council to take over management of the grounds may have been on the cards for years. Committee member Helen Weil said she felt that over the years Council officers did not seem to have a true understanding of the Hinterland community.

“Most have not even been out to the Sportsground. They didn’t have any idea of how important and how interconnected facilities are within the community.

“They apply the rules, regulations, and local laws without consideration of the consequences and cost to the community. The effect is not just on our income but that of the local community and businesses as well,” said Ms Weil.

She said that she felt the BSMC has just been jollied along, as well as frustrated for the last few years by Council. In some ways she said she felt the committee’s hand was being forced to give up and dissolve the BSMC.

“Why would we want to continue under the Council’s proposal when in fact we will be giving up all rights to anything we currently own and all rights to anything happening on the grounds. Council

options including a change from an overarching head lease arrangement to individual tenure arrangements for user groups within the facility.

“Under this proposal, Council would assume financial responsibility for common use areas, including car parks

for consideration,” the Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said.

Deputy Mayor and Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski said that Council had been invited to attend a moderated workshop on October 31 hosted by the BSMC. He explained the objective was to

present and explore a range of future operational models ranging from very little change to substantial change

more towards these objectives, but at this point I think it’s important to respect that this is still an internal process for the Committee, the affiliates, and the members to discuss.

I look forward to hearing of their recommendations.”

Local grants boost

THE latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) has brought a total of $721,765.58 in grants to the Glass House electorate – the highest amount by far that it has ever received in the history of the program.

The GCBF provides sizeable grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations with revenue sourced from gaming taxes. Grants from the GCBF are usually capped at $36,000 but this was a special $100k ‘Disaster Recovery Round’, aimed at supporting groups affected by recent floods and other natural disasters.

In no particular order, the recipients from Glass House in Round 114 are:

• 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop Inc - $9,064 to purchase display cabinets

• Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club Inc$29,631 to purchase a ride on mower

and cricket equipment

• Herd Together Inc - $19,000 to construct shelter

• Montville State School P&C - $100,000 to upgrade playground

• Mooloolah State School P&C$35,811.98 to upgrade audio visual system

• Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade - $35,000 to build shed extension

• Range United Churches Soccer Club Inc - $100,000 to repair carpark and access road

• SRV Baseball Australia Inc - $17,573 to purchase sports vision board and equipment

• Stanley River Junior Rugby League Club Inc - $76,600 to replace sports field lighting infrastructure

• Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club Inc

- $100,000 to upgrade bike track and lighting

• Witta Tennis Club Inc - $99,254.60 to resurface courts

• Woodfordia Inc - $99,831 to repair road network

Hall is trashed

THE Glass House Mountains Community Hall was recently targeted by vandals, resulting in damage to the hall’s back stairs and entry.

It is understood vandals did not gain access to the inside of the main hall, however significantly damaged the stairway and landing rail, as well as defacing property with grafitti.

Understandably the Hall committee are deeply disappointed in the wilful damage to property, particularly as the hall provides an important space for the community to come together.

With no footage, Police ask anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Community insights are shared

COMMUNITY members of the Glass House Mountains and surrounding areas engaged with students from University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) at a special 90-minute workshop. Part of the Sunshine Coast Community Co-Lab pilot project, the workshop, held on November 23, involved approximately 40 participants who shared insights about their township.

UniSC Program Coordinator Nicholas Stevens said a key task of the workshop session was for the students to listen to community members, understand what they wanted for their township and then

compile the ideas, which could then be presented back to the community for consideration. Issues discussed included transport and access concerns, youth engagement options, as well as discussions around the current design and amenity of the town centre.

Summer Warm Up Festival

AFTER a three-year hiatus, The Maleny Music Festival will return to the Maleny Showgrounds in 2023 with two great family friendly events planned for the year.

The first musical offering will be a ‘Summer Warm Up’ mini-festival from Friday February 17 to Saturday February 18, followed mid-year by the 10th Maleny Music Festival Winter Solstice celebration scheduled for June 23-25.

Hailed as a boutique festival experience, The Maleny Music Festival taps into the community roots and eclectic vibes of original Maleny Folk Festival, a forerunner of the Woodford Folk Festival.

The program for the Summer Warm Up includes a Friday evening acoustic and a family Bush Dance in the Bunya Pavilion. The Saturday program will commence at 11am and feature an impressive line-up of local Sunshine Coast talent as well as interstate headlining acts. Camping will be available and food trucks, coffee vans and bars will be onsite both Friday evening and Saturday.

Festival mentor Noel Gardner said it was great to be planning their 9th event in February, with the festival team excited about putting together a summer gathering for the first time.

The program is currently being finalised

Bringing joy through singing

Local resident Rebecca Hoge instigated the choir for personal reasons.

“I’ve always loved singing, and reached a point where I felt like I really needed to sing. I enquired about singing groups in the area and there wasn’t anything that would work for me.

“I thought, maybe we could make

in the community, and connection to nature.”

With support from hinterland development worker Jody Blackburn, Rebecca connected with a like-minded community member Cara Roberts. They enlisted the support of choir leader Brian Martin and Joy of

a community choir that was all about connection.

“One of the things I get out of leading choirs is watching people find their voice. Not just their singing voice, but their spoken voice, their personality. Watching people strengthen in their own abilities; to notice themselves

and notice that their voice is important.”

The motivation is different for all members. Rebecca’s brother Andrew Hoge said he joined to get together with a bunch of lovely people, have a good time, and go away filled up. For Susan Kroening it’s about having a regular connection point you can count on every week, while Cara Roberts sees singing bring out people’s joy and increase their self-worth.

According to Brian, everyone can sing, and this was all the encouragement Trevor Gibson needed. He loves singing and the choir provides social interaction, a way to get involved in the community, and lots of laughter.

The choir has blossomed over the past 12 months from a handful of singers to almost 20 regulars, with some travelling over an hour to attend. As part of the birthday celebrations, a video was made to capture the thoughts of some participants. You can watch it on the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News Facebook page.

Broncos Girls Academy at Beerwah SHS

BEYOND the Broncos Girls Academy was launched at Beerwah State High School on Thursday, November 3. Thank you to parents, special guests, staff, administration and students that attended. The Brisbane Broncos are very excited to bring our successful Girls Academy to Beerwah SHS and to offer our support to even more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls.

This program is available to all Indigenous girls enrolled at Beerwah State High School.

The Beyond the Broncos Girls Academy values the vital role that young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women play in influencing the next generation by providing culturally based support for these future leaders to succeed at school and beyond. The Brisbane Broncos have

been delivering innovative programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in Queensland and northern NSW to support their education, training and employment opportunities since 2010.

As part of the program, we also offer regular activities each term to encourage and reward achievement. We will also deliver personal development workshops for the girls and encourage attendance

support for your student, on Monday and Wednesday.

Lutherans on the “Cow End”

130 YEARS ago, Lutherans gathered for a Christmas service on land just outside the Maleny Township on the Blackall Range and Witta’s Good Shepherd Lutheran Church congregation was formed. The church was built the following year and continues to this day, this year celebrating its 130 year anniversary.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Witta’s chairman Phillip Thamm shared that while life has changed significantly over that time, God has been working within the Church’s congregation throughout the last 130 years.

To celebrate, on Saturday November

3, the Church will host a special book launch, followed by the opening of a community labyrinth and shared morning tea.

‘Lutherans on the “Cow End” of the Blackall Range’ was written by members of the congregation following many years of extensive research. The book focuses on the church and its predominantly German congregation between 1892 and 1929; it also tells of early European settlement and the opening of the

Maleny Butter Factory in 1904, which lifted the district from subsistence farming to modest prosperity.

As dairying increased, Witta and Maleny became known as the “cow end” of the Blackall Range.

Phillip shared that the 180-page history of Lutherans at Witta between 1892 and 1929 covers more than just the church.

“It provides a brief history of the Jinibara Nation and a well-sourced overview of

European settlement on the southern end of the Blackall Range. There are stories of Germans searching for land in 1887, selecting land, 1893 cyclones, the Maleny Butter Factory, anti-German hostility in the Maleny district during WWI, and many more.”

Eighth red bench launched

AN eighth red bench for the Blackall Range was launched by Councillor Winston Johnston at St George’s Anglican Church in Maleny on Sunday, November 20.

Red benches are an initiative of the Red Rose Foundation, the aim being to raise awareness of the extent of domestic and family violence in our community and start conversations to effect better outcomes. In our area, these have been facilitated by Speak Up Now, Stop Domestic and Family Violence, a collaboration formed in 2019 between the Rotary Club of Maleny, Zonta Club of Blackall Range, Quota International of Maleny and also the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre.

all spoke about the scourge of domestic violence, and Val France from Speak Up Now, recalled some sobering statistics, including one woman a week and one man a month are killed by a current or former partner in Australia.

Six red benches are planned for churches on the Blackall Range, with this being the fourth.

All are in parishes with female priests, a fact confirmed by Tanya Felstead, as typical for the rest of the country. It seems that men see domestic and family violence as a women’s problem.

While women and children bear the brunt of the violence, it is predominantly men who hold the solution. Come on guys – we need you to model respectful behaviour, to mentor young men to learn better ways of behaving, and support the victims.

Maleny-based Sam Shepherd is one of those guitarists who combines great technical fluidity and musicality, so it is not surprising that heads turn when he performs. Now in his early 30s, Sam exploded onto the scene winning competitions as a teenager and was encouraged in his endeavours by artists such as Michael Fix and Tommy Emmanuel. Coming from a musical family a life in the arts appeared natural and adding a pleasant singing voice to his attributes has enabled him to eke out a living as a performing musician.

Covid’s affect on the career of so many in the arts however encouraged him to refocus his career aspirations and he is now enrolled in a masters degree in music therapy. Interestingly, Sam assured me that it was something that had been on his mind for many years. He has been a lifelong sufferer of OCD and knew that at some point he wanted to bring healing into his work as a musician. If he could turn his mental struggle into a

positive thing he feels, then on some level it might have been worth it. His personal interests in meditation, mindfulness and Buddhism may perhaps be incorporated into his performance. I imagined him interacting, guitar in hand, with a client, even a non musician, who might sing or play percussion as a form of release.

This led us to further discussion of his music as he is moving more toward creating his own work these days - both song and instrumental writing, rather than playing other people’s music. He has released an album called ‘Invisible’ but another is on the cards as he has enough of his own material for a further foray. I asked him about lyric writing as that is an area that challenges a lot of musicians. Sam feels confident as a wordsmith and says his lyrics are about things that affect him emotionally, although he noted he doesn’t write generic love songs. Even when he writes instrumentals he says he thinks of them as songs without words.

I ask Sam, as a take away, what is the one thing that he finds most powerful about music. He says it allows him to be in the moment, to forget the rubbish that is going on in his head and to be 100% himself. Sam Shepherd will be performing his original music at Muzika at Maleny RSL on Thursday December 1. Do get along if you’d like to catch him in action. I don’t think you will be disappointed!

Local publisher is serenading authors

MALENY local and bestselling author, Sarah Williams, has recently taken her knowledge of the book publishing industry and formed her own boutique publishing house Serenade Publishing.

“There are a lot of options out there for authors,” Sarah said.

“Traditional publishing contracts with big business are hard to come by and, unless you already have a huge following, won’t pay many of your bills.

“Self-publishing is a cheap way of getting your work out into the world, but without the right marketing will probably get lost in a very crowded market.”

Sarah formed the publishing house in 2017 when she published her bestselling Australian Outback romance The Brothers of Brigadier Station.

Since then, she has written seven more novels and helped to publish many more.

But now Serenade Publishing has officially opened for submissions, and Sarah has already signed many future bestsellers in a variety of genres.

“We are looking for well written romance, fantasy, mystery, crime and general fiction novels,” she said.

As well as publishing and writing, Sarah also teaches her signature online course How to Write a Bestseller: Everything you need to know to write fabulous fiction that sells.

Strong ticket sales ahead of Woodford

TICKET sales for Woodford Folk Festival are flying high and another recent spike of interest has organisers feeling very optimistic about the return of the event this year.

Season camping tickets are in strong demand, with almost double the number of tickets sold compared to this time last festival.

“The good ticket sales are a relief,” said general manager Amanda Jackes. “As the huge cost increases across the board have been a challenge. It’s been a tough couple of years. Some of our suppliers have gone out of business and there was a lot of work to do to bring the site back to life after the shutdowns of the last two years. We’ve also opted to make some exciting changes to the event and so the surge in sales is comforting.”

“It will be three years since the last Woodford Folk Festival, and we have enjoyed the challenge of moving forward and bringing about three years of change in one.

“We think the spirit of this festival will be more powerful than ever. Woodford has been a beloved annual pilgrimage for many and there will be so many happy reunions this year.”

Transport is a farce

In relation to the poor connection of local hospitals to public transport, just try catching a bus to the public hospital in Maleny. You can’t. It’s the only public hospital in South East Queensland not connected to public transport. Any plans by any official transport boffins to rectify the lack of service? No way. Another travesty in our region. And in relation to the bus connection of Landsborough Rail Station to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), a simple solution is to make all 605 services from Landsborough travel to Caloundra on the existing route but then continue onto the SCUH and then to Kawana Shoppingtown. The current zonal system is a farce and from a hinterland perspective, reduced public transport delivery across the coast when introduced.

No smoke without a fire...

In response to recent letters to You Said It, it’s evident that many people are sick and tired of being smoke affected by the never ending burning of garden waste in the areas of Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough. Clearly the council are more than a little backward in coming forward, so to speak, in terms of exercising any degree of control when it comes to nuisance smoke.

In the past I’ve contacted council and received conflicting advice, and also met with a designated investigating officer at my property. According to council, in a rural/residential designated zone

the whole issue of what constitutes “nuisance smoke” is ambiguous at best, and laughable at worst. In a civilised society, all residents have a legal entitlement to “quiet enjoyment” of their property. I believe this should also include not having to endure offensive air pollution from neighbours randomly burning off green waste. Passive smoke inhalation is a known serious health threat.

Given the recent addition of the green waste rubbish bins being provided to most homes, there really is no excuse for piling up green waste to burn off when it can be so easily removed from your property. I have friends who live in other areas of the hinterland with no green waste service currently available and they are envious I can dispose of my garden waste so easily.

I believe it’s high time to put pressure on the Council to change the regulations regarding backyard burning off for all properties of less than one acre in size. This should cover most homes in our townships and reduce the frequency of smoke nuisance in residential streets. Properties of more than one acre in size would have a greater need to exercise their own right to burn off, with a permit, and would have more distance between neighbour’s homes in regards to control of nuisance smoke.

I for one will be requesting Rick Baberowski to take action on this matter, and I urge other rate-paying residents who are sick of the smoke to consider doing the same.

Public Transport Reference Group

MANY of you have come to me with frustrations and ideas around how our public transport system here in the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast could be improved. Here’s another opportunity for you to have your say. The Department of Transport is looking for locals to serve on their Community Reference Group.

It’s been clear for years now that a new approach towards public transport and its efficiency is needed, and this project encourages the community to let the Government know how to ‘get it right’. A genuine devotion

IT says something of the man that Tom Malone was taking phone calls and writing out fire permits in his role at the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade just days before he passed away.

Tom was an original member of the MRFG and fire warden for 40 years in a role that would have been enough work for most people.

But the long-time Maleny local, father of two, grandfather of six, great-grandfather of two, and husband of 58 years to Desley, was not like most people when it came to family, friends and community.

Giving back came second nature to Tom. Among the many groups he was involved with included founder of the

volunteer guide for the Mary Cairncross Management Committee, an original member of the Maleny SES, a life member of the Landsborough St Vincent de Paul Society (awarded September 2022), a volunteer for the Maleny Historical Society, a member of the Maleny Men’s Shed as well as Maleny Probus.

And there were more.

Desley said she would remember Tom as a wonderful person and “we will miss him forever”.

“He truly lived his life well, was a devoted husband, wonderful family man, a gentleman and committed to his community,” Desley said.

Tom was born in Warwick on September 12, 1929 and was the second youngest in a family of 10. He became a motor mechanic and later bought a service station at Stone’s Corner.

Tom and Desley first met at Jazzland, a dance hall at Cotton Tree and the pair married in 1964. Some four years later they bought Desley’s parent’s business and made Maleny their home. They had two children, Peter and Andrea.

Andrea described her father as “patient, honest and true” and said their early childhood with Tom was an adventure.

“ We had a Dad who was hard-working and nothing seemed too much trouble,” Andrea said. “He would play trains on the

Also speaking at Tom’s funeral last week, Peter described days at their property seeing his father work into the night “fixing things”.

“We used to joke how he spent more time fixing the mowers than mowing,” Peter said.

Peter added how much he valued his father’s input into mentoring and educating his own children.

Andrea and Peter recently retraced the path Tom and Desley took on a trip over the Simpson Desert.

“He remembered it all and helped us get ready and shared experiences and advice on how to navigate it,” Peter said.

And despite falling ill in October, he was lending his expertise on fixing a car just weeks ago.

“My mother, sister, family, my partner, children and myself are so thankful for his part in our lives,” Peter said.

“He helped everyone without a hesitation and was an inspirational father figure.” Tom died peacefully at home on November 11 after a short battle with cancer.

The Transfiguration

THE Second Letter of Peter at 1:16-18 is where Apostle Peter says they were eyewitnesses of the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ, ‘of his magificence’: “For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.” (Similar words were also said by God at the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.)

This memory of Peter in his own Letter about this Transfiguration, was more fully described in some of the four Gospels. Mathew says at 17:1-8 “Jesus took with him Peter and James, and his brother John, and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared Moses and Elijah, talking with him”. Similar words in Mark 9:2. Luke 9:28 has God saying “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” Jesus had “trans - figured” into an earthly representation of his much greater heavenly glory.

The presence of the already saintly Moses and Elijah with Jesus shows the continuing life after our earthly presence. Elijah (9th Century BC BeforeChrist) holds out hope for repentance before

judgement, while Moses (approx 13911271 BC) is a representative of all the prophets who looked forward to the coming of the Messiah. The mountain represents where human nature meets God. Jesus went on to open the door of heaven to all those of goodwill.

Volunteers don’t have the time, they have the heart… of gold

MEMBER for Glass House Andrew Powell recently thanked volunteers of the Glass House electorate with a special morning tea awards ceremony in Maleny.

“Covid stopped me from doing these for a while, but I used to hold an annual volunteer awards morning tea,” said Mr Powell.

“It felt right to bring it back now and these awards are a special highlight in my calendar.”

A total of 25 nominations were received, including a very special nomination for Moya Pullinger of the Sacred Heart Conference in Maleny.

“Moya’s nomination was very touching. Her nominee truly sees her as having a heart of gold and I believe her nomination and contribution to the community is worth sharing,” Andrew said.

Moya has been a member of the local conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society for the past 18 years.

The Society only has a small number of members at the local conference but Moya has been a valued member who often went beyond what could be called reasonable for a volunteer to help people in need.

Moya and her husband John will soon be moving to Beerwah.

Another exceptional nomination Andrew received was for Cherryl Williams from the Glasshouse Country RSL SubBranch.

Cherryl’s nominee said that she was a tireless volunteer who cooked every Friday night at the RSL for up to 40 people while managing the other volunteers in the kitchen.

She also caters for Anzac Day, Vietnam Veterans Day and Remembrance day, and organises private functions such as wakes for returned service families.

All the recent rains may have leached nutrients out of your soils, such as calcium and nitrogen. You should take time to spread some control-release fertiliser about the garden. When the weather bureau suggests we may get a week of rainless weather, you’ll need to apply a light spread of lawn fertiliser and water it in.

If you haven’t done it yet, prune your azaleas to keep them nice and compact, and give them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them with a systemic insecticide (like Confidor) to protect the leaves from the dreaded azalea lacebug

• The wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veggies overnight. Hand remove or spray once a week with something like as pyrethrum, Dipel or Success. Remember that water washes off any sprays so retreat after

the male flies, and so are best used as an indicator of fruit fly activity. A more recent product is Eco-Naturelure which attracts both the male and female fruit and contains a natural insecticide to kill them. My advice is not to spray it onto the plants you want to protect, as will attract the fruit flies to them before killing them. I’d suggest spraying a nearby fence or other structures nearby to lure the flies away from your precious fruits.

Fertilise your bananas and cut out any suckers you don’t want. For each mature plant, you should have one sapling and one sucker. Regularly remove yellowing leaves to keep the clump tidy.

DONNA Manning and Sarah Widin played Ken Barker and Vince Carbery in a game of doubles on Thursday where good breaks were played on both sides. At different times players were set up with the opportunity of going to the peg with their ball however, like the Australian team at Cairnlea, small errors were their downfall. Donna and Sarah won a close game 14 – 12. Wallace Roy and Dianne Horsman, two of our promising players, played a friendly game of singles in which Wallace was in fine form winning convincingly 16 – 8. Seems as though we’ll have a good Bray team next year!

Sensible people took notice of the BOM (or is that the Bureau?) on Sunday and stayed at home. Dianne and Donna had a good practice and coaching session before play at 2.30pm but that was about as good as it was going to get. Nick Cram and Ken began a game of singles as did Lynette Evans and Dianne in fairly muggy conditions and patches of bright sunshine. The rain hit at about 3.30pm and play was abandoned soon after when it appeared to be setting in. Lynette had scored a creditable seven break in that time, but no game scores were recorded. The attached photo shows Nick, Ken, Lynette, and Dianne sheltering under the shade shelter as play was about to be abandoned.

Reed’s inspirational visit

BEERWAH State High School students were thrilled to have NRL star and former student Reed Mahoney drop in and give an inspirational speech about his journey to the big league.

The former student and Beerwah Bulldog was a grand finalist in the 2022 NRL grand final.

The school said it was fantastic to have Reed come along and talk to students

about his journey, saying he was a true role model for students.

“We are so fortunate at Beerwah SHS to remain closely connected to our alumni, following the success of past students beyond the gates of our school community,” principal Lyn McDonald said.

Reed told students that there was no hidden secret to success.

Instead, it was simply a matter of

hard work and commitment. Reed was also happy to sign autographs and take pictures with students and his favourite teachers.

Lyn thanked Reed for giving up his time and the school wished him success in 2023.

Bowls Club’s annual Plum Pudding Day 2022 held on Thursday November 10 was a resounding success with teams participating from Pelican Waters, Nambour, Club Maroochy,

Teams were vying for our famous home made Plum Puddings cooked by our amazing members and volunteers.

As tradition rules at start of play there was a ‘Spider’ with all players rolling a single bowl all at once with the winners bowl stopping beneath the spider - quite a shot and worthy of the plum pudding prize.

15 ends of play in the first round was followed by a sensational lunch organised by our fabulous band of “chef volunteers” before another game of 15 ends.

Winners of the day were Mooloolaba Bowls Club who were presented with their Plum Puddings by major sponsor Tony Weldon from Maleny Hotel.

Blind faith

TWO women were out for a Saturday stroll. One had a Doberman and the other a Chihuahua. As they walked down the street, the one with the Doberman said to her friend, “Let’s go into that pub for a drink.”

The lady with the Chihuahua said, “We can’t go in there. We’ve got dogs with us.”

The one with the Doberman said, “Just watch, and do as I do.”

They walked over to the pub and the one with the Doberman put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk in. The bouncer at the door said, “Sorry, lady, no pets allowed.”

A WOMAN brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgery. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird’s chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, “I’m sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away.”

The distressed woman wailed, “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead,” replied the vet.

“How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.”

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck’s owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck

said, “A Doberman?”

The woman said, “Yes, they’re using them now. They’re very good.”

The bouncer said, “OK, come on in.”

The lady with the Chihuahua thought that convincing him that a Chihuahua was a guide dog may be a bit more difficult, but thought, “What the heck,” so she put on her dark glasses and started to walk in.

Once again the bouncer said, “Sorry, lady, no pets allowed.”

The woman said, “You don’t understand. This is my guide dog”

The bouncer said, “A Chihuahua?”

The woman with the Chihuahua said, “A Chihuahua? They gave me a freaking Chihuahua...”

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, “I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck.”

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.

The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill. “$150!” she cried, “$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!”
