Hi Everyone
I
I am really looking forward to next week as it includes one of my favourite days at work, getting to go to a Melbourne Cup lunch. Well it isn’t so much the actual lunch, it is getting to ‘play dress ups for the day’ as Sarah and I race from venue to venue trying to get photos of ‘everyone’ while enjoying the sense of anticipation in the air. If you are a regular ‘Melbourne Cup Lunch’ attendee you will know what I mean, if you’re not, why not try it this year and see for yourself. There are still tickets available at the Beerwah RSL, Beerwah Hotel and the Glasshouse Sports Club. So
grab a friend or two, find something in your wardrobe that doesn’t get out much, head into Beerwah Hair and Beauty for a fascinator and you’re ready for some fun. Or if you fancy a new frock and the budget is a bit tight, then check out our local recycled and preloved fashion locations for some inspiration. There are some photos on page 8 – Sarah and the ladies at Endeavour had a lovely time modelling the other day. So, ladies, thanks and you look great. Oh yeah, I hope you all back a winner!

Good service award for good bloke While many of us receive a friendly thanks from our customers and are pleased to know we have done a good job, recently Steve Lee from the Glasshouse Mountains Taxi Service was put into the spotlight for his standard of service when he received recognition from Carers Queensland. In a field of 12 nominees for the Carers Queensland Award, Steve managed to win ahead of a very competitive field, taking out the Sunshine Coast Great Service Award. This was a great and well deserved achievement. Steve was nominated by a resident from Maleny who has appreciated the assistance he has provided her in her role as a carer.
Gilly dropped by on Saturday When you head along to the Beerwah Hotel on a Saturday afternoon you don’t expect to see Trevor ‘The Axe’ Gillmeister walk through the door. But that’s what happened last Saturday as he dropped by as part of his fundraising walk between Townsville and Brisbane to raise funds for asbestos-related diseases. Gilly, as he is affectionately known to Queenslanders, lost his dad almost five years ago and saw this fundraising walk as a way of raising awareness in what can happen to people
exposed to asbestos. Trevor walked an average 48km per day over 28 days to arrive in Brisbane on Monday, October 27.

Love and respect - keys of success for this happy couple By Davina Illing
Landsborough couple Fay and Gordon McIntyre have 65 wonderful reasons to celebrate today – 65 years of wedded bliss! In their own words, they “have had a beautiful life” and have three children, nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren as testament to their happiness. Fay was just 16 years old when she met the love of her life, Gordon, or Jock as he is affectionately known. Jock was 22 and on leave from World War II and they have a visit to the circus at Warracknabeal in Victoria to thank for their meeting. “Jock never went back to the Army. A temporary stay turned into a permanent one and we are still together today,” Fay said. Fay and Jock celebrated their church wedding two years later with a high tea breakfast reception at Jock’s mother’s house so it was only appropriate that the two would celebrate their 65th anniversary with a replicate high tea Now - 65 years later

reception with family and friends on October 25. “We spent the first night of our honeymoon on a midnight train to Adelaide – with stockings hanging all around us!” said Fay. Jock went on to drive fuel tankers for 28 years and with every move, he and Fay added another child to their brood. “Love and family are everything to us,” Jock said. “Fay has been an ideal partner and we are open and honest with each other. She just grows on you.” Fay agrees: “I just love him for who he is. We've never thought about parting. We've had a pretty happy life.” Central to their happiness has been the nucleus of family. “Family is a big part of our being. We have shared everything,” Fay said. The family moved to Landsborough in the late 70s purchasing 11acres which they could only describe as a “cow paddock”. Today that paddock is home to numerous family members in what resembles a tropical rainforest created and nurtured out of love. “We gave each child an acre each and they have built their own homes, however this house (our own home) has been the communal home where everyone gathers,” Fay said. “We have had some really lovely times here. It has been a good start also for the grandkids and each one of them has a special meaning to us.”
Then - on their honeymoon in 1949 Regular family holidays over the years have also helped to cement the family, including cruises and lots of camping. However Jock's words of wisdom for the family's success have been self-respect and always keeping a smile on your face. “Plus we get a lot of looking after!” Jock jokes. “The secret of a happy marriage is working hard. We could not have achieved what we have without each other and a lot of love for each other and from our family,” Fay said.

Local Ironman shows steely determination Back in April GCNews brought readers the story about Beerwah local Damien Collins who had just won his age category in the Ironman New Zealand at Lake Taupo and had qualified to compete in the 2014 World Titles in Kona, Hawaii.
While Damien might be disappointed that he didn’t come out on top, judging by his Facebook page he has plenty of fans and supporters who think his achievement and determination is truly ‘awesome’.
After only participating in the sport for a little over a year and a half Damien recently travelled to Kona and competed in the event, taking out fourth place in the under 24 years-old category and he is now ranked about 206th in the world. The Hawaiian Ironman event is tough. Widely known as the hardest one day sporting event on the world, the course includes a swim of 3.8kms, a bike ride through the lava fields of 180kms, and a full marathon run of 42kms in the blistering heat and humidity. Despite not having the level of experience as many who he was competing against, Damien had set himself the goal of taking out the win. So after competing in the race Damien was a little disappointed in his result, but acknowledged that it was the hardest race he had competed in to date and that the conditions were brutal and he was happy with how he raced. He said it was a mentally tough day to keep pushing through the race knowing you're not having the day you’d planned for and still pushing your body just to finish as well as you can, and that's what he did. Success in this sport is all about ‘digging deep’ which he definitely did.
And two of his biggest fans and supporters would have to be his mum and dad, who many readers would know. His dad is Brad Collins, who works at Beerwah First National Real Estate, and mum Cris Collins formerly ran Beerwah Shoes.
caption
Damien said his goal now is to turn professional. “Kona was a big eye opener for me, to be successful you’ve really got to dedicate all your time to training, and working a full time just doesn’t fit into the puzzle,’’ Damien said. “I’ve got to dial work down to as little as possible and go all in and commit, I have no idea how I’m going to fund myself but I don’t want to wake up 10 years down the track thinking ‘what if?’ “So I’ll have to be a little more active chasing sponsorship and keep improving my race results.

John, Nell, Narelle, Fred, Bernie, Toni, Arena, Maryanne and Kathy with the celebratory cake It was only due to the generosity of late Glass House resident Ron Wells at 59 Bowen Road, who was then recently widowed with a disabled son, that Lavally Lodge was created. At the time a group known as Christians for Handicapped Care and Encouragement (CHANCE) approached Ron about establishing his home as residential care for the disabled (on Ron's passing) to ensure the care of his son. With Ron's agreement, work to re-vamp Lavally Lodge began in earnest and the facility was officially opened on September 17, 1989 with Pat and Mary McGrath as the first house parents. An adjoining half an acre next door to Ron's own half acre was purchased and so the dream became a reality through the assistance of volunteers and tradespeople who donated their time and materials to ensure the success of the project. “It is with great pride that we look over the past 25 years on Lavally Lodge's achievements and all of the wonderful support we have received from our Catholic and residential community and for that we are truly thankful,” Mary said.

Last month the Lodge's 10 full-time residents, their “house parents” Mary and Bob Crase and staff held an open day to celebrate the anniversary. More than 100 people, including residents’ families and community supporters, gathered for a church service, readings, and a day of music, fun and festivities. Mary has been with Lavally Lodge for 12 years, eight of those as manager. It is Mary and her staff's dedication which has made all the difference to the residents and success of the facility, which is maintained and generously funded by the Caloundra Catholic Community. "We really support the residents to lead fulfilling lives, whether that is going to TAFE, shopping, finding employment or engaging in meaningful and stimulating activities," Mary said. "It empowers them to lead fulfilling lives in a supportive environment." These activities include attending workshops and respite care, as well as volunteering their services with gardening and Meals on Wheels. But it is not all work and no play. Mary recently escorted five residents to Sydney to see the stage play ‘Strictly Ballroom’, as well as on the annual camp which was this year held at Yeppoon, where they enjoyed a visit to an animal farm and theatre restaurant. Thanks to the support of the broader community, residents will also be treated to see the stage play ‘The Lion King’ later in the year. “It is very gratifying to see the difference in the residents when they achieve their goals and build their self esteem,” Mary said. “My role is to facilitate their growth and to see them blossom.”

Seeking letters from the front in WW1 Do you have authentic letters from the battlefields of World War One written by your relatives? If so, Maleny playwright David Crewe is eager to hear from you. David is scripting the main arena event for the June 2015 Sunshine Coast Show entitled ‘Anzac Dawn’ and plans to use these letters as part of the drama. The Show’s organisers, the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Society, have commissioned David and Buderim composer Paul Coppens to create a spectacular original work involving a massed choir, bands, and actors as part of the Anzac Centenary year commemorations. “The letters we seeking are important documents which describe personal experience of this horrific war,” David said. “I am keen to have access to these as a way of relating this production directly to people in the area. They can be from soldiers or nurses or other relatives involved in the struggle.” The Agricultural Society has received a grant of $80,000 from the Queensland State Anzac Centenary Fund towards this event, which is also supported by the Sunshine Coast Council.

Town pride on show at Beerwah Celebrations The Glasshouse Country Festival organising committee had a major stroke of luck this year when the time frame for Council completing the Beerwah Place + project coincided with the beginning of the festival. So the first event of the festival was the Beerwah Celebrations which were just amazing, with seasoned crowd counters reckoning that approximately 7,000 people came along on the night. The evening seemed to run really smoothly and it was amazing to see the true spirit of co-operation with Council staff, a community committee and a range of community groups and schools, as well as all of the local businesses working together so cohesively.
By Lea Parkes
Not surprisingly with the event’s success there have been plenty of comments locally about how we should have more of these events, and the expectation is now out there that ‘Beerwah can pull this off’. Now we need to keep the momentum going, keeping in mind that the $30,000.00 that Council provided for the event infrastructure made a huge difference to how smoothly this event ran and this was a one-off funding opportunity because of the project. The ‘Beerwah Celebrate Group’ is keen to start moving ahead with ideas for future events and they are keen to encourage other locals to get on board now.
Photography by Ilia Starkovsky
They would love to get feedback about the event, things that people liked, or could be improved and to identify people, groups or businesses that would like to be involved in future activities. If you felt that sense of pride and community spirit on the night and would like to get involved or at least provide encouragement, assistance or suggestions to the group, please fill out the form below or send an email to the committee.

Community News Community groups support each other!
Since their inception in 2003, the Maleny Singers have always given donations to various local community groups. To date, they have donated over $30,000.00 to many deserving organisations, including the Hospital Auxiliary, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and sporting groups. This November, the Singers are working in partnership with our local ‘Firies’, putting on concert performances of 'Merrie England' in both Maleny and Woombye. The ‘Firies’ may not be swapping their trucks for the microphone, but they are helping by setting up staging, selling tickets, and providing refreshments at interval. In return, the Singers are presenting a concert of Edward German’s delightful music, linked by narration from David Crewe and accompanied by the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra. All profits from these concerts will then go straight to the ‘Firies’. There are three concert performances of 'Merrie England' scheduled for the middle of November at the Maleny RSL. The performances are on Friday, November 14 at 6.30pm, Saturday, November 15 at 2.00pm and Sunday, November 16 at 4.00pm. Tickets are $20.00 and $18.00 and are available from the Maleny Visitor Information Centre or online at www.trybooking.com The following weekend, the Maleny Singers and the Maleny Performing Arts Orchestra are travelling to Woombye for a 2.00pm concert on Sunday, November 23, where they will work similarly with the West Woombye Rural Fire Brigade and also the Woombye Community Library. Tickets are available from the Woombye Community Library and also online at www. trybooking.com – just search for Merrie England or Maleny Singers and make sure you get the right tickets for the right concert.
Community initiatives continue at Marae Gardens
By Sonia Clark Last Tuesday, GCNews popped in to the Open Day at Marae Gardens and it was certainly a hive of activity with craft displays, a popular sausage sizzle, the weekday coffee cart doing a roaring trade and the community operated garage sale shop open. Marae Gardens at Beerburrum works closely with other neighbourhood centres in the Glasshouse Hinterland region to offer a range of services that give assistance and support to those in need – one of their main initiatives is to raise funds for the ‘Need A Feed’ program. Every weekday between 9.00am and midday, a ‘Garage Sale’ Shed is open to the public as well for those in need. The shed is packed with donations ranging from books and bric-a-brac, to appliances and beds. Everything is donated and new items arrive weekly. With a pricing policy of pay what you can afford – the shed offers both great value and a great community service. Whilst operating most weekday mornings – the ‘Garage Sale’ Shed can also open at other times by appointment/need. Like the shed which raises funds for the ‘Need a Feed’ initiative, every weekday a coffee cart operates outside the centre on Steve Irwin Way. Serving Segafredo Italian coffee and open from 6.00am until 12.30pm – the coffee cart offers a great drive through option for those in a hurry as well as an outdoor coffee break area for those who want to stop and chill out. The community operation has just launched an app that can be downloaded on both Apple and Android devices. The ‘Need A Feed’ app allows users access to information about the program, drop-off points for donations, and a coffee cart pre-order section so that you can order your coffee for easy pick up on the go. Marae Gardens is at 400 - 404 Steve Irwin Way, Beerburrum. Jeff and Huhana at the Marae Gardens 'Garage Sale Shed'

Rebooted art
The Maleny Flexi School has been busy for the last couple of months preparing for the National recycle week. They will launch an art exhibition titled ‘Reboot’ at the Maleny Library on Wednesday, November 5, 11.00am – 12 noon. Two of Maleny’s prolific artists Glenn Keanen and Angel Dust have been working with the Maleny Flexi School students to create pieces of contemporary art from recycled technical equipment. On display will be a full garment weaved from wires and cords, including accessories, plus keyboard heads, electronic flowers, robots and a futuristic cyber gun. Brother and sister have teamed up as film director and editor, interviewing the artists and filming the kids in action, adding music and creating the script for a short film to be shown on the day.

Facilitated by Nadine Thomas, Health and Human Services Consultant, these conversations are open to all members of the Hinterland community. The sessions will be held on the first Thursday of each month (except January) from 2.00pm to 4.00pm from November until March. Charitable Trust Grant put to good use Maleny Neighbourhood Centre received a Maleny Credit Union Charitable Trust Grant of $1,000.00 earlier this year and the funds have now been spent on Emergency Relief Funding and the purchase of $540.00 worth of Street Swags for homeless people and $460.00 worth of fuel vouchers. Fuel vouchers are distributed sparingly and are important for those who must get to appointments. The Design of the Street Swag won an ‘INDEX: People’s Choice Award’, one of the largest design awards in the world. Since receiving the swags in August, four have been distributed. A carry bag by day and a basic bed and shelter by night, the Street Swag was designed to be discreet so as not to identify people as homeless. This is particularly important for the women and children living on the streets, who need to be 'invisible'. The Street Swags, distributed across Australia, are manufactured at Woodford Correctional Centre and at Grafton Correctional Centre in NSW. This gives the prisoners work readiness skills along with tertiary qualifications, whilst being involved in meaningful work. The swags are then transported to Nudgee College in Brisbane where, as part of the schools social justice program, the students insert the foam mattress, roll the swag and package them ready for dispatch. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is grateful to Maleny Credit Union for the grant. Rachael Stacy and Anne Delmas from Maleny Neighbourhood Centre roll out a street swag

Local hero abducted – reward for return Students from the San Training Centre are desperately searching for clues to the whereabouts of their good friend San the Scarecrow who was mysteriously abducted overnight on Friday last week. San is about 180cm tall, of athletic build, and was last wearing a taekwondo training uniform. He was last seen standing proudly at the San Training Centre on Steve Irwin Way. A reward of training to the value of $60.00 is being offered for information leading to San the Scarecrow being returned to his home. If you have any information to help solve the mystery, contact Cameron on 0437 571 540 or leave a message on the Facebook page ‘san training centre’.

n my world I measure every life event by how many editions we have until something is happening, so with only seven editions until Christmas I really have to accept that there are things to organise and I probably need to get started. From year to year the quality of my Christmas seems to be dependent on just one thing – having a strategy, well strategy might be a bit of a stretch, but putting together a list of how I want my Christmas to run. Most years I do start with good intentions, saying I really want catch up with people I care about, or at least send lovely personalised message to everyone who is important to me, buy Christmas presents for the staff and family that they will like / use, work out how I can do the least amount of actual work on Christmas Day and, most importantly, enjoy the festive season.

Head to Mooloolah Pool and Swim Club
Have you seen the bright promotional signs about the town? Mooloolah Pool is again open for business with Learn to Swim classes, squad, school swimming and recreational fun in the sun. Mooloolah Swim Club is also up and racing, meeting again on Friday evenings at 5.30pm, for children from four years upwards. Swim Club is a place where kids can swim in a friendly, supportive environment, and strive to achieve their own personal best stroke times. Swim Club is managed and coordinated by parents of children who swim with the club, and right now, Mooloolah Swim Club needs the support and assistance of as many of the parents of Mooloolah’s young swimmers as it can rally. There will be a Mooloolah Swim Club AGM on Sunday morning, November 2, at 10.00am. Bring your children to the pool, and they can swim supervised while the parents meet to discuss and plan the future of the club and committee. For enquiries about classes and squad, phone 5494 7070. For Swim Club enquiries, email secretary.mooloolahswim@gmail.com
Musical treat for Mooloolah
Last Thursday, there was a very special guest at the Mooloolah State School’s fortnightly parade. Mr Darryl Devlin was presented with a certificate of appreciation for his generous donation of three beautiful instruments to the school’s instrumental program. Mr Devlin, a musician and composer who conducted programs and taught in Queensland state and private schools for many years, is now retired from teaching music and lives in Mooloolah. Mr Devlin is pleased to see his trombone, clarinet and trumpet become part of the Mooloolah instrumental music program and school band. Mr Devlin also donated some of his original music compositions to the school and the band played one of those lively compositions for him at the parade, to everyone’s obvious delight. Tania Owens, Mooloolah State School’s Instrumental Teacher, presented Mr Devlin with the certificate of appreciation for his gifts; and for the finale, the school’s brightly costumed Spanish Dancers once again twirled their magic to entertain their audience and guest. Mr Devlin has earned admiration, appreciation and a touch of celebrity status amongst the Mooloolah instrumental troupe!

Beerwah Celebrations
I am writing to thank the Beerwah community especially the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce, the Beerwah Country Women’s Association, Glasshouse Country News, Sunshine Coast Council, Glasshouse Country Festival and Councillor Rick Baberowski for the incredible support given to create the Beerwah Celebration. It was a gift to work alongside passionate people with vision and the willingness to work hard to create the awesome event that it was. I have heard attendance figures between 5,000 and 10,000 people bandied about and there were moments when I stood in awe at the incredible event that we as a community created. I think it is important to note that events like this take months of planning and hours of work to pull together. Given that the funds for the event came from Sunshine Coast Council’s Simpson Street upgrade project, any future events will have to be supported by community in many ways as Council funds and resourcing will not be as readily accessible. I look forward to working with the event committee over the following weeks and months to imagine and start to create the next Beerwah Celebration event – in whatever form that takes. I would love to hear from anyone who wants to join our fun, energised, creative committee to continue the party and let the Celebration continue! Ana Greenfield Hcdworker.ana@gmail.com Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra
Skippy Park shade and seating – or lack thereof
Since the upgrade of Skippy Park, understandably it has become even more popular and it's always filled with the buzz of busy families riding their bikes, having a picnic or enjoying the new playground. Which is why I find it hard to believe that in total there are only two tables? I visited the park over the weekend to have a picnic with my boys and the only place we could find shade was in a garden bed, using some rocks as our table and chairs. Surely this cannot be the end of the upgrade and more tables and shaded areas are planned? J Varlet Glass House Mountains
They want us to trust their microwave towers… but
They won’t give any guarantees about health risks, nor acknowledge any potential dangers behind what they propose. They won’t respond to questions related to future health risks and litigation. They won’t discuss greater health and safety issues about extending towers to include other telcos’ transmitters, dishes, pulsing smart meters, etc. They won’t discuss property values, liability and litigation for property valuations adversely affected by proximity to microwave towers, instead dismissing it as a nonissue! NBN Co won’t have another public meeting until after December 2014 when they’re ready to present DAs to council. This means landowners will have already signed irrevocable contracts for towers and nearby properties will be affected. I am not against NBN broadband for the community... just the towers. Installing a tower on your land will adversely affect your immediate community. At least 6+ towers are planned for the Maleny area. I want fibre optic broadband for all, the same as Maleny township is to receive. It’s a much safer alternative and, in the long term, cheaper. Dave Handley Maleny
Huge success
The new street opening in Beerwah turned out to be a great success, with a large crowd coming along to have a look, and get involved. The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains were kept busy on their food stall. We also had a great afternoon, with many people buying our beautiful sausages for a bite to eat while there. There were many stalls, all of the local shops were involved, and also had a very successful afternoon. This is something we should be doing at least once a year, here in the street, in Beerwah, to encourage the local people to buy locally. Don't go down to the coast, buy what you can here. We would like to see this happening in the other towns in our area as well: Coming together, having fun, and really enjoying ourselves. Trevor Taylor President Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains

Business feature
Mediterranean Ocean Cruising Contributed by Neil Playford, owner of Escape Travel, Caloundra Vanessa Saville and Ali Meri, from Escape Travel Caloundra, have just returned from escorting a group of 41 clients on a 32 day “Magic of the Mediterranean” trip. Our first stop for the group was Dubai for two and a half nights. Highlights of the trip were visiting the Burj Khalifa (the tallest man-made structure in the world, at 829.8m) and a dune dinner desert safari. Next stop was Barcelona, we were lucky enough to be there whilst the Barcelona Le Merce Festival was on, so the atmosphere was electric. Mouth watering Tapas, Paella and Sangria was enjoyed by all. We boarded the ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ Holland America cruise in Barcelona. Newly built in Venice in 2010, the Nieuw Amsterdam is a picture of elegance with three specialty restaurants, an a la carte restaurant featuring five course meals nightly as well a fully stocked buffet restaurant for casual dining. Our first stop was Marseille, then onto Livorno, where we did an amazing shore excursion to the Cinque Terre and even managed to squeeze in a photo stop at the leaning tower of Pisa. The next day was on to the sights and sounds of Rome including the Colosseum. We got to sample authentic Italian pizza and gelato (what’s another few kilos!) After an amazing day in Rome we were on to Naples and spent the day exploring the amazing historical area of Pompeii. After two relaxing days at sea we were excited to arrive in Corfu. It didn’t disappoint with its bustling shopping streets and restaurants. The next stop, Dubrovnik – a beautiful city where you can explore to your hearts content – ride the cable car, walk the city walls. The following day we arrived in Kotor, Montenegro – a lovely town with its fjord-like surroundings … very picturesque. From Montenegro we departed for Venice where we were fortunate enough to enjoy an overnight stop. A visit to St Mark’s Square and a gondola ride were the main orders of the day. Our next stop was the amazing Athens – visiting the Acropolis was a highlight for most of our guests and we got to work off some of our beautiful meals whilst exploring the surrounding sights of this ancient city. We visited Istanbul, with its beautiful mosques and palace. We got to haggle for leather and carpet at the Grand Bazaar – although I think the vendors came off better than we did. A relaxing afternoon was spent on the island of Lesbos – many of us partaking in the beautiful seafood treats the island had to offer. Next was Kusadasi, we ventured out to see the amazing ruins of Ephesus. What a sight. We explored the ruins, climbed through the terrace houses, which are slowly being pieced back together like a jigsaw. Back to Greece where we arrived on the island of Santorini, where most of us made the trip to Oui to see the iconic blue domed houses. The crazy ones amongst us rode donkeys – the sane ones rode the cable car! A quick stop in Argostoli, then back to Venice for another overnight stop. We all arrived home safely after a wonder action packed adventure. Where to next?? … call us on 5438 2108 to find out. www.gcnews.com.au

Living Very happy Vegemite
By Lea Parkes It looks like Beerwah local and Vegemite artist Julie Gould is getting plenty of media attention much further afield than our recent GCNews front cover story. If you are a Woman’s Day reader you will have seen a story about her in their pages last week, although they refer to her ‘Sunshine Coast Homestead’ which doesn’t quite have the same local ring as ‘her home in Beerwah’ as we had described it! And the team from Channel Nine’s Today Show were so impressed with her unusual talent that they have flown Julie and her son to Sydney where, on Wednesday 29, Julie will appear on the show putting the finishing touches on her portraits of Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson. When Julie is back home she will be giving us a full report on how the big trip went and what it is like to be the centre of so much media interest!

Are you unable to shift stubborn weight?
Even though you are exercising and eating the right foods, are you finding it hard to lose the kilos? Effective weight loss can be hard to achieve if there is a disruption to one of the following major organs – your stomach, spleen or liver – and this is why Kaz from Soulqi will ask you stick out your tongue! Looking at tongues in Chinese Medicine is a way to diagnose what is going on internally. It’s really quite interesting when you think about it. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the tongue is the window to the mechanics of the body. Five thousand years ago the Chinese did not have the technology we have today. However they’ve linked the organs to certain functions, based off thousands of years of observation … it’s primitive, yes, but it works. For instance a peeled tongue coating indicates a stomach yin deficiency; tooth marked sides indicating a spleen Qi deficiency; and pale sides can indicate a liver blood deficiency. This may all sound like gobbledygook to you, but these signs have very real implications. Come in and let Kaz check your tongue and do a pulse diagnosis. Fill in an in depth questionnaire and let Kaz tailor a treatment program based on the finding and re-balance you with acupuncture and herbs. Chinese Medicine is like ‘filling a glass with an eye dropper – one drop at a time’. So with respect to your health, in a few weeks or months you can look back and see how ‘full the glass has become.’

We reached our goal of $1000.00. Thank you to all our supporters. The candle lighting ceremony was very moving. I lit mine with hope of a cure for my brother-inlaw Gavin and in memory of another brotherin-law, Michael Tapp, who lost his battle with lung cancer. We never know where this ugly disease will strike next so it was good to be part of something that gives us hope for a cancer free world for our children and grandchildren. It was an awesome night. Beerwah Community Garden workshop
Things 2 Do
Come for a chat on how to establish the new Community Garden at Beerwah, Saturday, November 1 from 1.30 till 4.30pm with award-winning, accredited permaculture teacher Elisabeth Fekonia. The bones of the garden have already been established, including garden beds, a building with a kitchen, a shed and water. It’s at the Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) next to the Beerwah Skate Park and sports ground. All that is needed now is people who are interested in getting involved. There will be a presentation on existing community gardens to help generate some ideas of how our community might like to implement this one. The organisers are keen to hear your opinions. There will be some light gardening on the existing gardens, following the free homemade afternoon tea. If you plan to head along call Ana on 0407 165 308 or email hcdworker.ana@ gmail.com for catering purposes. The community garden is located at 32 Sports Ground Drive, Beerwah.

Fireweed menace on the Sunshine Coast
An unwelcome visitor—a weed from southern Africa— has been re-appearing across the Sunshine Coast. The latest incursion has appeared in newly laid turf in residential gardens, roadsides and new developments. The infested turf has most likely been brought in from areas outside council boundaries, as fireweed has yet to become established around or near local turf farms. Please remain alert to this weed as all parts of the plant are toxic to cattle when ingested, and even dried plant material can remain toxic. Smaller infestations can be easily removed by hand, however larger infestations may require chemical control. Seek advice from your local farm suppliers or agricultural produce store.
Get involved at Beerwah Library
Have you visited Beerwah Library lately? Council’s libraries are more than just a place to borrow books—they are vibrant community facilities with active volunteer programs that also offer a range of free activities. In November you can join children’s storytime sessions, get help on how to use your digital device, receive advice on the latest technologies available to assist with living with low vision, learn the basics of bonsai and container gardening or join a rousing baby rhyme time session. For further details and to make bookings, visit the libraries website at www.libraries.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au
Light rail investigation on track
Council has released initial findings on the suitability of a light rail transport system for the Sunshine Coast and is seeking community feedback about this future transport option. I encourage everyone to visit council’s website or local library or customer contact centre to learn more about light rail, and to provide your thoughts and comments.
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Spotlight on the hinterland
Great to hear our beautiful hinterland region was enjoyed by some of the best travel industry agents in the United Kingdom during a tour hosted by Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd this month. The trip was aimed at showcasing our natural assets and naturally refreshing environment to potential UK visitors.
New! Lifetime registration option
As cat registration now falls under the local law, cat owners who have desexed and microchipped cats can choose lifetime registration, with around 100 responsible owners already taking up the option. Lifetime registration means you pay a one-off registration fee of $75 and no annual renewal fees for the life of your cat. To switch to lifetime registration, contact council online, or by email or phone.
Animal strategy launch celebrations
Speaking of cats, they, along with dogs and owners are all invited to attend the Domestic Animal Management Strategy launch event at Elizabeth Daniels Park, Syd Lingard Drive, Buderim from 7.30am - 11.00am, November 2. The fun-filled morning will feature free microchipping for cats and dogs, entertainment for people and animals, food stalls, sample bags, animal training and much more. Dogs must be on-leash and cats must be in a cage at all times.
Make a difference with the gift of literacy
Sunshine Coast Council Libraries has joined forces with the Salvation Army to promote literacy and spread the Christmas cheer to less fortunate children around the region as part of the annual Books 4 Kids Christmas Book Drive from November 10 until December 15. To find out how you can brighten a child’s life with the gift of reading, visit Council’s library website.
Waterways report card
Our waterways have been tested and the results are good. A special thanks to Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Inc for their efforts with the Mooloolah River catchment area. Keeping our waterways healthy though is an ongoing job and everyone can help. For tips about what you can do to get involved at home or in the community, head to www.healthywaterways. org/getinvolved/help. Your State Member of Parliament is asking the community to let them know how you feel about the Halls Creek area being included in the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA (Identified Growth Area). This is your chance to let them know that you do not want this to happen, by following the steps below: 1. Addressing the following letter to either Mr Powell, PO Box 727, Maleny, or Mr McArdle, PO Box 3998, Caloundra 2. Tick the issue(s) as reason(s) why, and/or add any other concern you may have 3. Sign and date the letter including your address, put in an envelope addressed to Mr Powell or Mr McArdle 4. Mail it yourself or drop it (no stamp required) into the box available at Glasshouse Country News, Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains; Beerburrum Service Centre, Beerburrum; Morris House, Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough; or Kwerky Cafe, Simpson Street, Beerwah Dear Mr._________________________________________ (Member of Parliament) I would like to let you know that I am NOT in favour of Halls Creek being included in the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA (Identified Growth Area), because: I do not want to see the inter urban break, the forestry and agricultural land between the Moreton Bay urban border and the urban boundary of the Sunshine Coast, to get any smaller, as it is now a distinct open green space clearly separating urban areas at either end. I want to remove the added threat to the Pumicestone Passage, a unique and important waterway for many reasons, from more degradation caused by further urban development on its shores. The overall health of the region’s environment and its biodiversity would suffer even more if Halls Creek were developed. I want to lessen the negative economic impacts which the Halls Creek development and its associated retail precincts would have on the Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, and Landsborough townships. I want to see the previous wishes over the past 15 years of the community and the Council on Halls Creek, to remove Halls Creek from the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA, respected. Other ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________ As our local member, please listen to your constituents who are saying “NO to Halls Creek IGA”. Yours faithfully,

Hope survives loss
Last week my granddaughters requested to listen to the CD in the car’s player. One gospel song struck home. It dwelt on the greatness and power of Jesus, particularly in light of two of His miracles; the turning of water into wine, and the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Just three weeks ago I lost my own father. He was 94. He had a terminal illness which took him quietly. Yet two weeks after the funeral I still feel the loss. I wish I could speak with him again; gain some more of his wisdom. There is a Dad-sized hole in my life. Yes, I do have a loving wife, very supportive children, and a family who also deal with this loss along with me. But it affects me individually. As a pastor I am used to comforting others; now I need to let others minister to me. And that is happening. Friends tentatively GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

ask how I am travelling. My local church at Landsborough is a source of strength. Cards, phone calls, text messages, Facebook contact and emails from all over the world remind me that Dad was a special person. Of particular help have been the messages pointing to God as the source of strength and comfort during a time of loss. I really liked the pithy personal messages of support on one card signed by so many of my Landsborough church’s members. Having been at the bedside of so many as they drew their last breath, conducted so many funerals, and counselled families and individuals, I know it is not something to be taken lightly. In my quiet times I take comfort in the Bible promises regarding loss. One passage in the second last chapter in the Bible reads “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) To me this is a great comfort. I hope it is for you too.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Contributed by Jenny Kelly Our major competitions for 2014 were finally wound up with the playing of our Medal of Medalists event. The winners of the Monthly Medals throughout the year joined the field of 70 players to play a Single Stroke event for trophies kindly donated by Joan Fletcher, Joan Swyny and Marjorie Pavitt. The winner of the Medal of Medalists was Sonia Kenway who came in with
a 74 Nett. Sonia also won the Division 1 trophy, on the dreaded count back from Gail Gundry who also carded a 74 Nett. The winner of Division 2, with the best score of the day was Heather Coyle who came in with a great 67 Nett. Heather was followed by Rose Ballard on 73 Nett. Shirley Matherson won Division 3 with 76 Nett, while Josie Thistlethwaite was runner up on 77 Nett. Nearest to the Pins went to Karen Gannon on number 2, Debs Rutherford on 5 and Sonia Kenway on the 16th. Meg Ferran was closest on 18 in Division 1 and Josie took home the vouchers for Division 2. The ball rundown went to 77 Nett. It’s great to so many girls coming out to play and with such grand weather, who can blame them? The course is in great condition so come and check it out. See you on the fairways. Trophy donor Joan with Shirley, Heather and Sonia

Glasshouse District Cricket Club
Contributed by Frank Doonan Division Three had a great result in their two-day game against Nambour with an outright win. The boys played well. Congratulations to Liam Duncan for getting his first century of 136 n/o. Mick Schofield also got a century, finishing on 116 retired. This gave the opportunity for Liam’s dad Duncan to come to the crease and watch his son get his maiden century in first class cricket. Also Jack Hextall bagged 8 for 90 in his two innings with the ball – great effort for a good bloke. Other results First Division vs Caboolture: Glasshouse 1st innings 70, Glasshouse 2nd innings 110 and Caboolture 1st innings 220, outright win to Caboolture. Third Division: Nambour 1st innings 112, 2nd innings 191 and Glasshouse 1st innings 4 for 342, outright win. www.gcnews.com.au
Larkin, Viv James and Stephen Palmer 26 def Noelle Dean, Ron Wilson and John McSwain 16; Leisa Craven, Rae Farrell and Joy Reason 27 def Julie Palmer, Doug Loveday and Marleen Bertram 13; and Grahame Young and Kerry Capern drew 19 all with Dave Clarke and Jenny Hobson. Special note: Ron Wilson did in fact play on October 15 but his name was not included in the results book and subsequently did not appear in the newspaper report. be happy, the banker tactfully suggested that Tom should consider getting a hired hand to help him out on the ranch, knowing nature would take its own course. Tom thought this was a good idea and said he would look for one that afternoon. About four months later, the banker ran into Tom in town again. “How's the new wife?” asked the banker. Tom proudly said, “Good - she's pregnant.” The banker, happy that his sage advice had worked out, continued, “And how's the hired hand?” Tom said, “She's pregnant too.” Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah Week beginning 29/10/14

SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 From last week when you were bathed in a solar eclipse of your sign, you will now revel in the emotional and romantic warmth of dreamy love for the next six months until the next April eclipse period. The end of this week the Sun and Venus both move into your self-worth sector enjoying a fairy tale now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 This week you are picking up speed as Mercury has moved direct and as it thrusts through the sign of Libra there will be a connection into your joint funds and home zone, therefore any renovations or work with family and friends in their homes become a commune of shared resources and opportunities. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 After last week’s passionate Scorpio solar eclipse Venus and the Sun now enter Sagittarius, warming up your social fun and games with intensity and sexuality. There may be a cause involving your heart and to that which you are truly devoted. Both the Moon and Mars in Capricorn head you towards success. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Neptune moves you to compassion and sooths all your qualms and worries that have kept you down in the dumps over the last few months. Various planets now give warm aspects and connect to your joint funds. Familiar supporters surround you with joy and fun. Perhaps you will have super luncheon invites.
PISCES February 20 - March 20 Whether it is a trip to a private island or the private island of your dreams there are open arms enticingly embracing you by the end of the week with the Sun and Venus conjunction. They make a wonderful aspect to Neptune at the end of the month, so a love dream can really come true. Feel grateful this week. ARIES March 21 - April 20 This week could be a toast to your infallible ability to shine independently as you are boosted by Mars, entering Capricorn, from the 27th, motivating an ambitious climb to the top! A fortunate business work trend prevails. You could receive well deserved plaudits. Great progress towards an objective. TAURUS April 21 - May 20 With Mars entering Capricorn from the 27th, this week will see you adding drive, ambition and discipline as to how you plan your future. You may wish to speak to someone about cultural affairs and your own set of practical success rules. Trust in the good advice of a friend or colleague by the weekend. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 The last eclipse was a wakeup call to reform your inactive ways and get started on a new improved fitness plan. Mars moves through your relationship sector, so get outdoors and play sports or exercise with an outgoing companion. With Mars into Capricorn pay attention to your own wellbeing.
CANCER June 22 - July 22 Now that Mercury is going direct, unfinished family business arises for further examination. With Mars into Capricorn from the 27th there is an introspective assessment. A credit matter may require you and a partner to sit down and go over your shared assets. Smooth dealings are presented to you now. LEO July 23 - August 22 With a little original thinking you can be the person who saves the day from a crisis which erupts. The right mental attitude makes all the difference. It may be that there are debts outstanding, or an over run credit line and money is needed to balance out home affairs. Watch out for a personal blind spot. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 With Mars entering Capricorn from the 27th you feel more responsible and get a firm grip into controlling your ambitions. Whereas you may have been stumbling around prior to the 25th with Mercury retrograde, this week sees you accomplishing what you really want to set out to do. Manoeuvre effectively. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Now that Mercury goes direct in your own sign it continues moving forward until the 9th of November and when it enters Scorpio you will be bringing cooperative allies into the best of all worlds. Even relatives may bolster your self-esteem. More than a possibility of brand new you arising as Mars now enters Capricorn!

Never too old! The banker saw his old friend Tom, an 80-year old rancher, in town. Tom had lost his wife a year or so before and rumour had it that he was marrying a 'mail order' bride. Being a good friend, the banker asked Tom if the rumour was true. Tom assured him that it was. The banker then asked Tom the age of his new bride to be. Tom proudly said, “She'll be 21 in November.” Now the banker, being the wise man that he was, could see that the sexual appetite of a young woman could not be satisfied by an 80-year-old man. Wanting his old friend's remaining years to
