fter attending the Dawn Service in Maleny, the wreath laying and parade in Landsborough, and the parade and service at Beerwah, followed by the parade at Glass House Mountains on Saturday morning I reckon I must have seen just about every member of Glasshouse Country and Maleny communities. At 4.18am at Maleny RSL we were simply amazed at just how many people made the early start to the day. Maleny regulars thought it would have been maybe two – three times the usual crowd and possibly about 1,000 people, and going from reports at both Beerwah and Landsborough dawn services, they said the same – the crowds were so much bigger than usual and the trend continued throughout the day. Each of the RSL Sub-branches worked hard in the lead up to organise services and parades that made sure that those that attended will remember them. PS: We have included two full pages of photos on pages 26 and 27 and there are even more images on our Facebook page. Regards,

100 years on from the original Anzacs beginning their Gallipoli campaign during the First World War, local groups have put meaning to the words ‘we will remember them’ with the support of Australian Government grants. Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough said community groups across the Sunshine Coast have been able to secure funding via the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. “The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program has allowed local groups to recognise the service and sacrifice of Australians during the First World War and to tell the stories of local servicemen and women,” Mr Brough said. “I’ve had the pleasure of visiting many of the funding recipients over the past two weeks and I congratulate them all on their fantastic efforts to commemorate our diggers and ensure that their legacy is preserved for generations to come,” Mr Brough said. Locally, the Maleny Hospital Auxillary have received $59,000 for the WW1 memorial walk; the Maleny 5th Light Horse Regiment received $10,745 so the group could support Anzac Centenary light horse troop events; the

Welcoming new residents

By Lea Parkes

When people move to a new area it always takes them time to find their feet, to work out what local services are available, and what things happen in the new community. This was the experience Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch secretary Maree Anderson had five years ago, and the seed of an idea to create New Residents Kits was formed. The idea grew and after Neighbourhood Watch and Beerwah Lions worked together on the ‘turn the screw’ program last year (where members assisted locals with ensuring their number plates were secured to their vehicles) and a partnership was established.

Helen Butcher receives her Welcome Kit from Lions President Patricia Jutila For a number of months after that fateful day, Beerwah Lions and Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch have been working together, to create a Welcome Kit for people who move into Glasshouse Country townships. After plenty of hard work collecting materials the kit was officially launched on Wednesday at the Beerwah Library. Lion Una Robinson said after contacting all the local real estate offices they had been pleased with the response and support for the idea, and that they, along with Beerwah Library, were happy to be a distribution point for the new kits. There are a range of useful items in the bag, including a Lions Business Directory, information on a range of local community groups, and a Glasshouse Country & Maleny News notebook – which reminds new residents of the best way to keep up-to-date on what is happening in their local community. Job well done Maree and Una.

Speed-dating for social and environmental change We’ve all heard of speed-dating for lovers, but have you heard of speed-dating for community and business? SpeedSeed is a speed-dating inspired event for both sides of the change-maker equation – people with ideas and energy and people with resources to invest in social and environmental good. Local SpeedSeed coordinator, Helen Wilkinson, said this new event encourages local groups, individuals and businesses to network and explore shared interests and opportunities. “This is the first time for SpeedSeed to be held on the Sunshine Coast, so we are particularly fortunate to have it held in the Hinterland,” she said. This innovative event brings together people who are ready to kick start a community project or a social enterprise (change-makers) and those who

wish to make a difference through ethical giving, which includes the contribution of time, expertise and resources (investors). SpeedSeed is presented by The Goodness Inc. in collaboration with the Hinterland Community Development Program and is proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program. Applications for change-makers and expressions of interest for investors are now open and due Friday, June 12. A pre-event info-workshop for change-makers and a pre-event info-workshop for investors will be held in late June. The SpeedSeed event will be held on July 22. If you are interested to participate as a changemaker or investor, please request further information and the application form from Helen at helen@thegoodnessinc.org or 0410 057 315. Supporting youth Growing up in today’s world is difficult, but it’s much harder when you’re lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI). Australian research indicates that LGBTI youth tend to leave school at a younger age than straight youth, they use more illegal drugs than young people in the general population, and 38% of gay people have experienced discrimination. Awareness raising and education help to reduce such discrimination. International Day against Homophobia (IDAHO) is celebrated every year on May 17 and this year the focus is Maleny and its sister towns, who are no different from anywhere else. Trying to keep young people in the district is always a challenge. As well as having access to employment and social activities, young people in particular need to feel as though they are an integral part of their community. They need to be able to grow and develop without fear of harassment or discrimination. Breaking down barriers involves educating people about the very real challenges that LGBTI youth confront in their daily lives, as well as providing services. The Maleny IDAHO group, a collection of community members from across the Hinterland, is holding two events in May to raise awareness about issues facing young LGBTI people in the local community. On Saturday, May 9, a photographic display featuring LGBTI youth will be held on the Maleny Community Centre Deck from 4.00pm – 6.00pm. In collaboration with the Maleny

The two galleries will open until 6.00pm. On Saturday, May 16, a dance and cabaret evening will be held at the Maleny RSL from 7.00pm - 11.30pm. These are community events, supported by local community groups including the RSL and Rotary, which has contributed a grant towards the event and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has consistently supported youth and the IDAHO group. Everyone is welcome to come along and support raising awareness of these issues. Any profits will be donated to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre for LGBTI Youth inclusion projects.

Fun run fundraiser

Contributed by Charlie Roy This year Glass House Mountains State School will be holding a school fun run on May 8 as a major fundraising event. The costs of running an educational institution are rapidly increasing and government funding is steadily decreasing. As a result, schools have to find larger amounts of external money in order to provide quality educational facilities and services. The Run 4 Fun is a healthy, fun and active

fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and giving new things a go. It is a showcase for our school and is expected to draw a large crowd of varying community members, businesses and families. Students are asking for donations from family, friends and neighbours, with each trying to raise the most money possible to win prizes and help the school.

Wood Expo this weekend

Locals would be aware of the Maleny Wood Expo and what a wonderful annual celebration of the wonderful world of wood it is. Just in case you missed the signage, it will be on at the Maleny Showground on Saturday and Sunday. Maleny Wood Expo is one of those rare events with ‘something for everyone’, whether you’re a collector of fine woodwork, a woodworker yourself, or just want to have a wander around and see what is on display. The Wood Expo tells the whole timber story – from seed collection and planting of forests, to harvesting and milling, through to the end product. Find an inspirational piece to transform your home or take home the perfect piece of timber for that DIY project. Enjoy demonstrations of heritage crafts such as cross-cut saw racing as well as mobile milling, woodworking for women, chainsaw carving, wood turning, and tool displays from our heritage days, to the latest wood carving innovation and technology. Artists support Twinnies

By Lea Parkes The Twinnies Seabird Rescue Service was recently presented with a cheque for $1,000.00 by the Queensland Wildlife Artists Society Inc. The Brisbane based group of artists paint wildlife, native and overseas animals and has over 80 members, a number of them, including Peta Boyce from Mooloolah, are based locally. The group hold four exhibitions a year and raised the $1,000.00 from raffles, donations, art sales and magazine sales at their recent exhibition. They have also raised funds to help other wildlife causes including the koala action group in the Redlands, and when they’d seen some stories about the Twinnies Seabird Rescue they thought it was a very worthwhile cause to fundraise for. The group members who came to present the cheque to Paula and Bridgett said they were amazed at how professional the set up was, particularly knowing that the girls had created it from nothing. They were also most impressed with the dedication and caring nature towards wildlife that the girls showed to them on their visit. Buy a kit today and live to enjoy tomorrow Helen Evans of Maleny is living proof that the Rotary Bowelscan program saves lives. Five years ago Helen’s Rotary Bowelscan test came back as positive. Helen said the shock was immense. “But thanks to the Rotary program my life was saved through the early detection of the cancer and subsequent operation,” she said. Bowel cancer results in more deaths than breast cancer or prostate cancer each year. Approximately 14,000 cases are detected and unfortunately about 50% of those prove fatal. Early detection is the key as there is a 90% chance of recovery; a late detection generally can prove fatal. The simple Test Kits cost $15.00 and are available from all hinterland pharmacies. A new type of kit is available this year which is easier to use and includes easy-to-follow instructions and a prepaid envelope to mail off the sample direct to the accredited laboratory. Results are then sent direct to you from the laboratory. No need to drop samples back to the pharmacy. Bowel cancer is not a disease of just the elderly and Queensland Health recommends every person over 40 get tested annually. So it’s up to you – hide behind the good old Aussie saying of ‘She’ll be right mate’ and do nothing, or face reality head on and buy a kit from your local pharmacy. Remember spending a small amount and having the test done could just be the best $15.00 you ever spend.

Thank you Beerwah IGA What recipients of the 2014 Community Chests said about their donation

Landsborough Students give their new athletics shirts a big thumbs up! Landsborough State School has recently taken delivery of a team set of brand new athletics shirts, thanks to a donation from Beerwah IGA late last year. The shirts will be worn by all Landsborough students representing the school at District sporting events, such as cross country and athletics. They were purchased with a $1,000 donation from IGA Beerwah, along with a $580.00 contribution from the school's P&C Association. Landsborough's P&C President, Jo Brooks said, the P&C felt our existing sports uniforms were in desperate need of updating. “We would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to IGA Beerwah for their donation of $1,000 enabling us to purchase these shirts,” she said. “Our students are certainly looking forward to proudly wearing them to represent Landsborough at upcoming sporting events for many years to come. Thanks IGA for making us look like champions!" IGA supports many local organisations and charities through its Community Chest Program. How it works is, every time you buy IGA branded products, they donate funds to our local community through IGA's Community Chest. So keep your eye out for the Community Chest logo on IGA and selected products when you are next in store and help make a difference in our community.

Taranaki Garden Tour Malcolm and Nancy Baker’s love of gardening is evident at their home, nestled in the slopes of Maleny township. Whilst they have only been in this house for the past three years, they have been Maleny locals since 1991. They ran their very successful Baker’s coaches with Malcolm at the wheel and Nancy behind the scenes for 16 years until they retired from the business in 2008. Malcolm says that during his time driving school buses and charters, he saw a lot of things in his rear-view mirror, but one of the best things he and wife Nancy saw was how much fun groups like the Maleny Garden Club had on their chartered trips.

Nancy and Malcolm Baker

Business Feature “When we retired, one of the first things on my ‘to do’ list was to join the Maleny Garden Club,” said Nancy. Since becoming a member Nancy has taken over as Tour Coordinator for the Club and has kept very busy putting together and escorting tours all over Australia and the World to see the most beautiful gardens. Between their charter business days and their involvement in the Maleny Garden Club, Malcolm and Nancy have personally escorted over 40 extended tours to destinations such as Norfolk Island, Taiwan, Fiji, Canada, Tasmania, Melbourne and New Zealand … just to name a few. This year’s Maleny Garden Club trip is shaping up to be one of the best, with 10 days touring New Zealand’s North Island. The pinnacle of the tour is the time spent at the world famous Taranaki Gardens in the New Plymouth region, but there are plenty of other landmarks visited and experiences to have along the way. In conjunction with Bruce from Trade Travel Sunshine Coast, who specialises in great value senior’s holidays for the over 50’s, and the team at Grand Pacific Tours NZ Coach Holiday Specialists, Nancy has put together a tour full of the best gardens and highlights of the North Island. This 10 day, nine night tour departs from the Brisbane International Airport on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. At just $3,899 per person, the tour package is quality from start to finish and represents fantastic value for money. Included in the price are return transfers,

Contributed by Judith Mason Horacio Passeggi and his daughter from Latin America Group Tours, with the aid of photographs, took us on a tour of Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, Peru, Argentina and Brazil, and told us the history of Latin America. Certainly we would all like to go! Our May outing will be on May 6 to the beautiful Botanical Gardens at Maleny and our guest speaker for our May meeting on Wednesday, May 20 will be from the ‘Sunshine Linas’ club. This will be followed by our birthday celebrations in June where the theme will be Country and Western - so dress in this theme and don’t forget the spurs and whips! We are to lose one of our members, Elaine Riches, who is relocating to the Gold Coast. She served on the committee for many years and will be missed. The Mooloolah Mob Yes, we’re still walking and would love you to join us. This group has now been walking for over 10 years and for some of us that’s well over 8000km covered. Walking is each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am for about an hour. We meet at Martin Rungert Park, Mooloolah – right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes about the local area. It’s a great way to start

the day and to meet new friends. This is a Heart Foundation group activity. You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. Please consider joining our group to enjoy the social aspect of belonging to a friendly group as well as the health benefits of regular walking. Hope to see you soon. For more details phone Helen on 5494 7496.

Community centre will miss Nancy Sadly for the Mooloolah Valley Community Association, one of their wonderful volunteers, Nancy Frost, is leaving them to move to Perth to live with her daughter, Jenny and her family. The Frosts were a great community spirited couple, highly regarded in the area. Nancy and her late husband Jack both worked tirelessly for the Mooloolah community over the past 30 years plus. Nancy and Jack were involved in the Mooloolah Pony Club, Jack assisting with the horses and events, whilst Nancy baked up a storm and worked in the canteen at the Pony Club for many years. After Jack’s death, Nancy busied herself with her acreage property on Eudlo Road Mooloolah, doing much of the hard yakka around the farm herself. Nancy came to volunteer at the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre, serving in the Op Shop, sorting clothing and goods and helping out at the monthly community barbecues. Nancy said that she’ll be 80 years old next year, and feels the time is right to move onto the next

chapter in her long and eventful life, and to spend more time with Jenny. Neighbourhood Association Secretary, Anita said she’s sure there is an Op Shop in WA who would jump at the chance to secure a special volunteer such as Nance. A farewell morning tea was held at Mooloolah Valley Community Centre last Friday, with everyone wishing her all the very best for her new life in WA.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association The big fig

Many Maleny locals will remember climbing up inside the big strangler fig (Ficus obliqua) before the fig deck was built to stop such errant behaviour! Sadly that tree, estimated to be about 500 years old, is now dying (you DIDN’T do it!). For many years we have known that a very nasty fungus Phyllinus noxious has been attacking the roots of the fig. The roots have become so damaged the supply of moisture and nutrients to the top branches, more than 45 metres up, has been interrupted, and fungi and borers are now established in the tree. In recent months, this has caused the tree to drop some branches potentially endangering walkers and that part of the track has been closed. Arborists employed by council have removed some branches and discovered that another fig has taken root about half way up. It is hoped this new fig may strengthen the old one, so we can retain as much of the old tree as possible. The track will be reopened after some board walk repairs, but the fig will have constant monitoring to ensure it does not become a danger. The park and forest were inundated with visitors over Easter and throughout the school holidays. We love to see families with young children so interested in the forest, its birds and animals. Many children are so excited when they come out, it is fascinating to hear their observations and answer their questions. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protection and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. To find out how to become involved check out www.friends-of-marycairncross.com.au or call 5435 0348.

by Gretchen Evans This interesting fungus has been found growing on logs in Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. It has been called an ‘icicle fungus’ because it consists of single or branched spines which can be up to 25 mm long. Sometimes they appear to fall like tiny waterfalls and at other times they look spikey and these tend to be those which are more branched. They can be pale white but often look dirty or with a lilac tint. Some authors believe they are related to the coral fungi. An interesting thing about this fungus, is that apart from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, there is only one other record of its occurrence in Queensland, and that is from Springbrook. Currently, there are no recorded endangered or rare fungi listed in Queensland and the Queensland Mycological Society believes fungi have been largely ignored by the Nature Conservation Legislation. Members are attempting to find rare fungi to bring to the notice of the State Government and this is possibly one that could be considered. If you should happen to find another one, please do let us know! Note: Deflexula means ‘bent’ and fascicularis means ‘pertaining to clusters’.

This great Maleny event is in its 19th year and its brand is as strong as ever, with all the associated benefits this brings to Maleny. Congratulations to the team at Barung for bringing this event together. It’s with a certain degree of sadness we say goodbye to Colin and Jean Cunningham from Colin James Fine Foods – ‘Home of the Best Gelati in the World!’. But after 13 years, it’s time for a well earned break and to hand over the reins of this iconic Maleny business to new owners Kate and Norman Scott. All the best to Kate and Norman, Jean and Colin – Jean’s not going too far, as she’s the invaluable Maleny Commerce Treasurer! Congratulations also to Jim and Sandra Goulton of Maleny Jewellers for 15 years in business and their planned expansion into Beerwah also, great to see another long-term Maleny business growing and going from strength to strength. The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre brought us the great story of their street swag project, which provides swags (and independence) for homeless people. These swags can be sponsored for just $80.00 each, contact the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre if you’d like to help out. Keep up the good work Maleny and see you next month.

Beat the butter, sugar and rind with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the flour and tea leaves and mix until it comes together. Turn out onto a floured surface and lightly knead into a ball. Split the dough into two balls. 2. Roll each ball of dough out between two sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Using a small sharp knife cut dough into small teabag shapes.

Soulqi

Using a spatula, carefully lift biscuits onto a lined oven tray. Using a skewer poke a small hole into the top of each teabag for the string. Bake at 160°C for 12-15 minutes or until a light golden colour. Cool on a wire rack. 3. Combine icing sugar, lemon rind and juice and water until smooth. Dip half of each cookie into icing and place on a wire rack to set. 4. Cut small squares out of decorative paper and glue onto strings. Thread each string onto a cookie and tie to secure. For many people, the word ‘mum’ strikes a powerful chord. As the saying goes – our mothers hold our hands for a short while, but they hold our hearts forever. This Mother’s Day, the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia encourages people to show their love and appreciation for their mum by making a donation to breast cancer research in lieu of a gift. Because, wouldn’t a world without breast cancer be the best Mother’s Day gift of all? When you donate, you can choose a Mother’s Day card to give to your mum or someone special which acknowledges your special gift. You can personalise the card, and leave a message or tribute to your mum on the BCIA’s website message board. Simply visit www.bcia.org.au or call 1800 423 444 today to donate and order your card in time for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10. All funds raised support lifesaving breast cancer clinical trials research to identify new and effective breast cancer treatments and prevention strategies. Over 40 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia today. They are our mums, sisters, wives, aunts, daughters and much loved friends. Make a life changing gift this Mother’s Day to breast cancer research and support our mums and all the special women in our lives.

You Said It New walking group

I am forming a free walking / strolling and coffee group for local women age 45+. The idea is that it will be a friendly social get together masquerading as exercise. This group is designed for women mostly over 45+ with empty nests going on. Who would like to come out for a stroll/walk and finish with a coffee and a chat? We have such beautiful surrounds and now lots of lovely cafes, let’s make the most of it and have a lot of laughs along the way. Well behaved pooches welcome, when we have coffee at a cafe that welcomes them too. Make some new friends and if we have to, get a little fitter along the way! If you are interested just go to the Facebook group called Ladies Empty Nester 45+ Walk, Coffee & Chat Sunshine Coast Hinterland Group and hit the JOIN button. I am thinking we may have a couple of morning walks and a couple of afternoon walks (adjusting them with the changing seasons) followed by coffee at a cafe local to the walks. They’ll be mostly around Beerwah, but we could have one in Glass House Mountains, then one in Beerwah and one in Landsborough, with one month somewhere like Caloundra, Buderim or Maleny. I am mostly interested in walks during the week (maybe I will get more enthusiastic) as I don’t work, but later on someone may like to take over organising weekend walks. Our first meeting is on Thursday, May 7 at 10.30. Please call Louise on 5494 1474 for more details or go to Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ groups/558633097609687/ Louise Fulford Beerwah

Re: Not rocket science, GC&M News April 15. I hardly think it's fair to direct your frustrations to the postie on duty that day. How do you know he wasn't a new employee, or someone from a different area filling in for the day? A postman can only deliver mail if they know the address that the mail is intended for, which includes the street name, number, suburb and postcode. I don't think they should bear the responsibility of 'having a good guess' at where insufficiently labelled mail should be going. Can you imagine the chaos that that would cause? Instead of

being upset or frustrated at the post office or the posties themselves, (who for all we know had no idea where this card was meant to go) I think you need to recognise that the situation could have been avoided if you had addressed the letter correctly. Kellie Farraway Glass House Mountains

Re: Beerburrum – Proud and Loud, GC&M News, April 22

I read with interest the latest propaganda from Cr Rick Baberowski promoting two new road signs introducing passers-by to Beerburrum. These signs identify the ‘Historic Town and Flinders Trail’ on the Steve Irwin Way. It is wonderful that we have history to remind us of Matthew Flinders’ epic journey throughout the region. This area is also the native homeland of the Gubbi Gubbi Indigenous people who cared for this land for over 18,000 years. Regretfully, Division 1 funds could be better spent within the district. Beerburrum – Woodford and Old Gympie Roads which lead to the Glass House Mountains Lookout on Glass House – Woodford Road are in an appalling state of repair. The continued deterioration of these tourist roads is shameful and a poor example to visiting persons from intrastate, interstate and internationally, to witness that such a historic and heritage listed area is treated so poorly. These roads fall under Sunshine Coast Council’s physical and legal control. These three roads have not seen a full road resurface in the past 10 years. The increased traffic that uses these roads does not help the slim surface of bitumen any time of the day. Seriously, the region is growing, and it’s time that our local representative does something about these roads which are also used by tourists and residents alike. I hope Cr Rick Baberowski will do something positive towards these road issues for all Beerburrum and Glass House residents. Ross Parks Glass House Mountains

Connie’s Credit Chat

Hi I’m Connie and I might only be a young woman, but I believe in old fashioned values and upholding them very highly. I love spending my time giving back to the community and helping others wherever I can whether personally or professionally. Here is a bit more about me …. I have a strong volunteer background where I’ve created and headed up a lot of fundraising events which included Royal Flying Doctors Service, Cancer Council, Youth Groups, and Make a Wish Foundation. I feel very strongly about firstly supporting the people in our own local communities before reaching out to others. So please don’t hesitate if you need a hand. Give me a call, I will always try to help where I can. I’m a chatterbox and always up for a conversation about anything!

Do not be complacent

The May 14 ‘Community Information Session’ in Maleny by NBN is only for four sites that have been finalised. People are invited to ‘discuss these specific proposals’. Residents near to the co-location sites will probably have no rights to object as they are likely to be ‘Low Impact Facilities’ under the Telecommunications Act. More proposals will follow. This is part of the NBN divisive ‘divide and conquer’ process. The Towerless NBN Group will be providing alternate information about radiation from microwave towers in the Verandah Room during the NBN session in the Main Hall. It is proposed that a Press Release will be made next week which will include some Towerless NBN Group’s suggested questions that can be asked of the NBN representatives on May 14. I have a million hobbies and take on more each day which comes from me being easily fascinated about other people’s lives. The love of my life is my one eyed Maltese x Shitzu called ‘The George’. A name I felt he has more than earned himself over the years. On a serious note when it comes to work, I’m one of the very few people that have a passion for lending, which is what I’m constantly told by others. Some people think it’s weird, but we can’t help what we love. I love helping people understand and benefit from their finances. I’m on a mission to help as many people as I can in the local community to save money and have long term benefits from their banking. I look forward to having a chat soon about how I can help you. Have an amazing day, Connie.

Walk, cycle or run—there are many ways for Coochin Twins and Woodgrove Estate residents to enjoy the new pathway connecting their communities. Council and the Coochin Twins developer have worked well together, with council providing significant funding for the footbridge across Coochin Creek. Meandering through some attractive creek side vegetation, the pathway provides a safe and convenient alternative to the busy roads. Expanding the network of local pathways provides more options to be active and connected as a community.

‘Far from this Land’ exhibition

As our thoughts turn to commemorating the centenary of the First World War, I highly recommend a visit to the Landsborough Historical Museum to see the locally produced ‘Far from this Land’ exhibition. Remembering the locals who served in the First World War and acknowledging its impact on the Sunshine Coast, the experiences of war are revealed through the detailed life experiences of four Hinterland locals—soldiers Harry, James and William; and staff nurse Connie. For further details about the exhibition telephone 5494 1755 or visit www.landsboroughmuseum.org.au. Please note a small entry fee applies.

Local residents and visitors will be pleased to hear that Stage 2 of the Maleny Riverside Boardwalk project is now complete. This connects the boardwalk to the Cloudwalk Estate. The developer of the estate has also recently completed a 1.2 m pathway link to the Stage 2 pathway. The Maleny Riverside Boardwalk project is part of Maleny Community Precinct Masterplan. ANZAC Day 2015 Five generations of service By Sonia Clark

On ANZAC Day this year, former serviceman and Landsborough local Peter Hyde proudly wore not only his own medal set, but those of his dad who served in WW2, alongside the medal sets of his grandfathers who both served in WW1 at Gallipoli and the Western Front respectively. As a member of the Maleny RSL, Peter attended the Maleny Dawn Service before heading down to Brisbane to march alongside his army unit association. Peter is immensely proud of his family’s long history of service, and GC&M News caught up with him to talk about his family’s military connections and with the poignancy of the 100 years of ANZAC commemoration - his grandfathers’ personal stories. “My granddad played the cornet for the Invercargill Hibernian Brass Band prior to enlistment, and that's why he was appointed to the rank of Bugler for his Regiment. “I always remember talking to him as a small boy and he told me he got sixpence a day more pay than the other fellas for that job!” laughed Peter. Like many young men of his time, enticed by the promise of excitement and adventure, Peter’s maternal grandfather – 6/991 Bugler Sydney Peter Hudson enlisted in New Zealand on August 20, 1914 not even a month after World War One had commenced. After training in Egypt he then landed at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915. He was shot in the chest on May 9 a mere two weeks later but amazingly survived – he took what people referred to back then as ‘his ticket home wound!’

As the bullet was lodged too close to his heart for surgeons to operate back at that time, they only treated the wound for infection and incredibly left it in! He was honourably discharged on March 21, 1916 and sent home to be monitored by his G P. “He carried that round inside him until the day he died at the age of 80. Prior to his passing in Sydney in 1975, they x-rayed him and found the bullet had travelled to his thigh! He was buried with the Turkish round still in him,” said Peter. Peter is custodian of his grandfathers’ military memorabilia which have all been lovingly kept in pristine condition and beautifully preserved. They include wonderfully detailed certificates including one for disability signed by King George V which were given to all wounded returning ANZAC soldiers as well as a certificate of service which includes a record of war service and where they served tellingly in ‘the theatres of war’. Interestingly, when the campaign at Gallipoli was completed it was classed as a defeat and the British government at the time didn’t want to issue campaign medals. It was only through much sustained pressure from families and the RSL’s that finally 50 years later in 1965 the Australian and New Zealand Government agreed to strike their own bronze medallion to honour the survivors of that campaign and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the landings. The medallions were issued in 1967. “I am also very proud of my other granddad, 2411 Private Norman Hyde, who served in France and Belgium from June 21, 1916 until he was wounded in Action (WIA) by being gassed on

Peachester Remembers On Sunday, May 3, Peachester History Committee is hosting a special function to commemorate the Anzac Centenary. Fifteen new WW1 memorial plaques will be dedicated at the Peachester Cemetery (10.30am for 11.00am start). Then members and visitors are invited to proceed to the hall for lunch, launch of the book ‘Peachester Remembers’, and music of the war years by the Woodford Singers. This event, the book and the plaques have all evolved from PHC’s on-going project to preserve our cemetery and promote its historical significance. Since 2000, when the cemetery was threatened with closure, PHC members have worked closely with Caloundra City Council and later Sunshine Coast Council to care for the cemetery, and to record the stories of those who rest there. Over the last 10 years, making use of the new rock retaining walls, families have placed www.gcnews.com.au

April 3, 1918. “He was with the 19th and 20th Battalion AIF and the 2nd MG Battalion AIF,” explained Peter. Peter’s paternal granddad enlisted in Australia on July 24, 1915 and his unit battle honours reflected part of the Somme campaign which saw some of the heaviest and most brutal effects of warfare on battlefields such as Menin Road, Bullecourt and Pozières. While he was honourably discharged on May 31, 1919 and survived the war, the gas took its toll and he died in Sydney in 1955 of lung complications aged just 59. When asked about the medal sets of his family Peter says they are his most precious possessions. “They are priceless and not mere ribbon and metal but an indication of the sweat, blood and tears that have gone into achieving these awards – I have to have the greatest respect for them,” he said. Peter comes from a long line of servicemen, which also includes his paternal great grandfather 42758 Sergeant Major William Hyde who served in the Royal Artillery during the 1880’s in India before emigrating to Australia. Peter’s father, Sapper Richard Francis Hyde was also a military man, serving with the Royal Australian Engineers, and during WWII experienced the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Peter has seen over 30 years of service himself and has previously paid his respects at Gallipoli, visiting in 1985. While the former serving army engineer officer is fourth generation military, his son Alexander Hyde is now set to follow in the proud tradition of his family - currently awaiting confirmation to join the Army which will make the family a remarkable fifth generation military.

memorial plaques in honour of their forebears who are buried elsewhere, and for service personnel who enlisted from this district or settled here after the wars. We pay tribute to our late members Nev Anning and Graham Leach, who led this project for many years, and to all other PHC members and community volunteers who have assisted with working bees, landscaping, restoration work and research. Funding under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants program, together with contributions from several families, has made it possible this year to provide the new plaques in honour of WW1 servicemen. As an associated project, a grant through the DVA Saluting Their Service program is funding the publication of our latest book ‘Peachester Remembers’, which includes photographs and stories about all the servicemen buried in Peachester Cemetery or honoured with a

memorial plaque: 24 WW1 diggers including the new plaques, 26 from WW2, and two post-WW2. An invitation is extended to the community to help us mark the Anzac Centenary, and pay our respects to the diggers from this district who have answered the call to arms, served in armed conflicts and peacekeeping missions, and the many who did not return from WW1 and WW2. One of the new plaques is for WW1 digger, Gunner James Percy Spiers from Peachester, who served in France and Belgium APRIL 29 2015 |

Things To Do More than a little black dress

Join the company of angels

Popular local dramatic group, The Maleny Players, has a fabulous new production entitled ‘More Than A Little Black Dress’. With performances over the first two weekends in May, the production will be staged at the Playhouse, Maleny Showgrounds. The play, written and directed by award winning local playwright Jo Denver, explores the extraordinary story of the woman who invented ‘the little black dress’. This intriguing production delves into the sex, style and secrets of Coco Chanel, who not only was one of the most famous fashion designers of her time, but a ruthless businesswoman with a penchant for famous lovers and dangerous games. “From humble beginnings she became one of the richest and most influential designers in the world. Along the way, she was a ruthless opportunist who grabbed every chance of furthering her solo ambitions through a string of wealthy titled lovers,” says director Jo. “The play explores the many sides of Chanel's nature and calls to account her extreme views,” she adds. The Maleny Players are planning for the first night to be a glitzy premiere, with the ladies in the audience invited to come dressed in their ‘little black dresses’. The show will be staged at the Playhouse, Maleny Showgrounds over the weekend of Friday May 1, Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3 and then the following weekend, Friday, May 8, Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10. Tickets are $15.00 available online from the www.malenyplayers.org or at the Maleny Visitor Centre. For further enquiries contact David on 0488 554 019.

Time in vs. Timing

We all live in the realm of time. And yet a common phrase we either hear or say is ‘I'm time poor or I don't have enough time’. And yet we all get the same amount of hours in a day. The same time as a brain surgeon or Prime Minister. What can we do to make better use of our time? Someone once said ‘don't count the days, make the days count’. It's important that we look for ways to improve our quality of life and this can be achieved through using our time in sync with the things we value. When it comes to investments there is an old adage that suggests success on the stock market is about time in rather than timing.

I think this is true of how we live our lives. We want to maximise the investment of our time, in our relationships and workplace, and also in our recreation. God calls us to a relationship with Him, not based on timing (only calling on Him when we need help) but a day by day, time-in experience. God is interested in every detail of our lives. Talk to Him the same way you talk to a friend about all that matters to you. Read His Word (the Bible) and allow the words you read to breathe wisdom into your situation. Time in, is all about valuing our time and the time we have needs to be invested wisely so that it adds value to the life we live. Living with a time-in attitude brings with it a richness to life, that will overflow into all areas of your life. God Bless you

Adrian Korst from Beerwah Locksmiths has over 22 years experience in the security industry. Adrian has managed Beerwah Locksmiths for a number of years before buying the business off his parents late last year. Some readers will remember Adrian from the locksmith shop near the Beerwah Post Office, before moving the business to a family owned property in Landsborough, a couple of years ago. With the change of ownership, Adrian has decided to close the workshop and to buy a large all-purpose van that will allow him to provide a more convenient and accessible service for customers that previously was only available through the workshop. The bulk of work for Beerwah Locksmiths has traditionally been locksmith services; however the business has expanded over the last four years, to also offer electronic security such as alarms and CCTV surveillance. Adrian currently services local businesses, homes and larger commercial premises, and he is happy to offer free quotes for security upgrades and improvements. Adrian is also pleased to advise customers that he has just purchased a brand new ‘Renault Trafic’ van which will provide an even better mobile service. In the near future, Adrian will be looking to expand his service capacity with the purchase of a new state of the art machine that will easily fit the new van and offers the capability of three current machines. This machine will allow Adrian to provide customers with a hightech mobile automotive locksmith service that will be particularly useful for modern car owners. For more details contact Beerwah Locksmiths on 0488 669 810.

Backyard Jobs for the yard in May • Raise your mower blades at least 25mm off the ground. The shorter days means the grass needs more leaf area to absorb enough sunlight. • Test the soil pH around your azaleas. It should be acid (pH5.5-6.5). Correcting the pH now will mean that the plant can absorb as much nutrients as it needs in spring. • Make cabbage butterfly deterrents by hanging empty egg shells above cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli plants. • Plant iceland poppies, pansies or snapdragons to fill in the gaps left in your flower garden if anything else has died off. • The lawn could do with a final fertilise before the winter months to strengthen the grass roots. Use half the recommended rate of a lawn fertiliser and apply it just before showers are predicted. • Keep the nutrients up to broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage seedlings as they grow. Use a high nitrogen product such as sulfate of ammonia. • Plant new citrus trees. Take off any fruits which have already formed – as these will sap anergy away from the tree and not allow it to grow a strong root system. • Fertilise your strawberry plants. Also regularly spray them with a fish and seaweed solution to keep them in good health.

What’s on for gardeners in May

M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month We care about our environment

Rose Myrtle

Archirhodomyrtus beckleri This small to medium sized bushy shrub is a great addition to any garden. Like many myrtles Rose Myrtle’s leaves are aromatic when crushed. The leaves are a glossy dark green, almost lime coloured in the new growth, with the new stems being dark purple in colour. The flowers are also a feature which are rosy pink and white in colour, and they’re quite striking, five petalled, and up to 10mm in diameter. The fruit follows which is yellow to red, it’s edible but not really palatable. Archirhodomyrtus beckleri is an adaptable garden plant which can tolerate full sun to light dappled shade, tolerates light frost and can be used as an informal screen. Rose Myrtle can be used in a garden that has a tropical feel, cottage atmosphere or bush setting, and makes an excellent container specimen. Come and view our plant selection at Mooloolah Native Nursery, you will be pleasantly surprised at the variety of plants that we have available.

I already had all the tools, equipment and experience and have a lot to offer in this field. I also enjoy a challenge, meeting new people and like being home based, so it was a natural choice.” Brian is a certified pool safety inspector and motorcycle mechanic. He has owned and operated motorcycle service and repair businesses as well as a variety of manufacturing and service enterprises. A complete perfectionist, Brian brings a wealth of common sense and solid practical experience to all of his work. One area of specialisation that Brian is particularly passionate about is pool safety certification. As a licensed pool safety inspector, Brian enjoys the opportunity to assist with making the backyard pool a much safer place for young children and ensuring your pool complies with these new standards. Diverse Mobile Services also offer Eftpos / visa / mastercard facilities. Diverse Mobile Services operate Monday to Friday from 7.30am until 5.00pm however Brian is always happy to cater for differing customers needs and offer flexibility in times. For more information see www.diverseservices.com.au or find him on Facebook. Alternatively, contact Brian on 5439 0231 or 0468 316 389 or email info@diverseservices.com.au

New Pool Safety Laws: What they mean to you… From November 30, 2015, all Queensland swimming pools must be registered on the Queensland pool safety register and comply with The Australian Standards and the Queensland Development Code. All pools must comply with these new regulations regardless of when they were built. Even though, as a pool owner you do not require a pool safety certificate unless you are selling or leasing your property, your pool must still comply with the new regulations by this date. The above regulations and standards are available for you to read and download from the QBCC web site under pool safety. However, to ensure your pool fully complies, it is advisable to engage the services of a licenced pool safety inspector to conduct a complete audit and report on issues of non compliance, including any necessary corrective actions. Upon compliance the pool safety inspector can issue a certificate if required. Diverse Mobile Services is your local licensed Pool Safety Inspector. Even in a small garden, accessories, water features, ornaments and single plants can be used to reflect your personality in the garden. If it is quirky you are after, then you might want to consider something recycled or reused, or if traditional is more your thing, how about a feature plant?

Garden delights 1. Colour that ‘pops’ - there are so many brightly coloured pots that work well and you can match it with the plant. 2. Feature plants - this Magnolia will grow into a magnificent specimen, but think carefully of the best position to plant, so you can enjoy its gorgeous scent and flowers in years to come. 3. Garden ornaments and lighting - definitely add a bit of whimsy to a courtyard or entrance.

Much more to the Maleny memorial garden than meets the eye As part of the Australian Government Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program, the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary received funds to create a ‘Walk of Remembrance’ through their grounds to commemorate the 90 locals who enlisted from the area in World War 1. Now completed – and recently officially opened – the garden, pathway, stonework and structures are a wonderful place for hospital patients, visitors and the general public to enjoy, contemplate and recuperate. Much careful thought went into the layout, design and construction of the gardens, so that they are not only pleasing to the eye, but are easy care, represent specific meaning, and are a touching memorial for a range of people and reasons. Tohm Hajncl from Amber Leaf Landscaping volunteered his time to coordinate the construction and installation of the gardens and structures. Tohm explained that many local groups and businesses had involvement in sections of the gardens, each having their own story. “Many plants were selected so that there will be something flowering all year round. Others were selected for their shade tolerance or their suitability for the function they will perform,” said Tohm. “The Maleny Garden Club propagated and grew hundreds of plants that went into the gardens, including around 60 clivias that are mass planted in a shady area just behind the timber log bench.” Some plants were also donated by the Tropical Foliage Society, and some from Tohm’s own collection. Tohm also chose plants that reflect local Maleny gardens, so that locals recovering in hospital would have a reminder of what their gardens may be like at home – which is an important part of a healthy recovery. Adding to this feel, the entrance-way is created using old local bridge timbers to form a post and rail fence, with the posts being made from Helidon sandstone, symbolising the farming heritage of the area. Planted each side are two local rainforest trees – Eumundi Quandong – which will grow to become grand sentinels, welcoming visitors to the gardens. “We also wanted to design the garden in a way

that much-loved local Colin Campbell would have liked,” said Tohm. Which is important considering that part of the garden is also a memorial to Colin, coming from other funds raised for this purpose. This section consists of Colin’s favourite camellia – Camellia ‘Jennifer Susan’, which is a beautiful pale pink double flower. Nearby, a row of standard white ‘Iceberg’ roses have been planted by another local family as a memorial to one of their family. These long flowering shrubs are back planted by another camellia ‘Setsugekka’, which is a sun-tolerant white flowered camellia. A beautiful part of the garden is the timber arbour set up on the higher ground, containing a couple of timber benches for people to sit and enjoy the garden ambience. Tohm designed the structures with his team constructing the framework. The benches were designed, constructed and donated by the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild (or the ‘Woodies’). The timber they used is Yellowwood gum, sourced locally, maintaining that connection with the local country. One important feature of the garden is the Aleppo Pine grown from the original ‘Lone Pine’ at Gallipoli.

LOVE COMING HOME… TO A SPACE THAT’S UNIQUELY YOURS.

Tohm explained that this respected symbol of the ANZAC tradition was moved from elsewhere to its current location. “The tree had been damaged in a storm and wasn’t looking to crash-hot,” he said. “Local bobcat owner Andrew Fea from Andrew’s Mini Excavations donated his time and equipment free of charge to carefully excavate, move and transplant the tree, which was no mean feat, as it has a fragile root system. “Consequently, the Lone Pine is looking a bit rough around the edges, but I’m confident it will recover well over the coming months.” Over 350 plants have gone into the garden, more than 400 cubic metres of mulch, tonnes of sandstone in the paving stones and retaining walls, and much local timber has been used. These all superbly compliment the series of sandstone sculptures and the plaques honouring the local WW1 soldiers for which the walk of remembrance was created. Hundreds of human-hours, sweat and probably some blood too, have gone into its creation … which is a true mark of the respect and reverence the local community as a whole for the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country.

Drinking water for tanks & pools Delivering to Sunshine Coast & Hinterland Fast & friendly service

Auskick at Landsborough Contributed by Craig Bales Glasshouse Hinterland's Club Auskick will be commencing this Thursday, April 30, from 4.00pm until 5.00pm at our grounds at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for the age groups of five and six years old and those who are older but not wanting to play club football. Auskick is for both boys and girls and is run over a nine week period. NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. Queensland Auskick Co-ordinator Stuart Seager said that Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment. “The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL,” said Stuart. “Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids' faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark.” If you require further information please contact Craig on 0414 225 329 or simply rock up on Thursday, April 30. www.gcnews.com.au

New Zealand Gold for local team

Norm Taylor, Leo McDonald and Cameron Taylor from San Taekwondo at Beerwah, Kenilworth and Maleny clubs, have returned from the New Zealand Open Taekwondo competition in Auckland with a gold medal each. Norm competed in the veteran division and had only one match against a New Zealand player. Cameron and Leo each had two matches in the round robin competition and both came away with gold medals in their divisions. “Three gold medals from three competitors is a great result,” said Norm who was also the manager for the Taekwondo Queensland team. The competition was attended by players from New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, but the boys agreed that the standard of competition was not as strong as it has been at past events. The San Taekwondo team is now preparing for upcoming events at the Gold Coast in May and the Australian Open at Melbourne in June. In the meantime, lookout for details of the San Training Centre Open Day coming up in a few weeks. Keep up-to-date with changes and happenings at our web site www.santkd.com and Facebook san training centre.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Sue Greentree On Thursday, April 23 the ladies played a Single Stroke competition for trophies donated by Joan Swyny and Joan Fletcher. The competition attracted 57 players who competed in two divisions. The worthy winners were: Division 1: Lea Garner with 68 nett, runner-up was Lorraine McCamley on a count back with 72 nett. Division 2: Pat Chapman with 69 nett and runner-up was Pauline Masen on a count back with 73 nett. NTP’s were won by Heather Henn No 2, Barbara Whitfield No 16 and Cindy Godfrey No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 79 nett. Next week’s competition on April 30 will be a Single Stableford sponsored by Fay Raven and Di Flint. The Ladies welcome new members, beginners and visitors.

Winners Joan Fletcher, Pat Chapman, Lea Garner, Lorraine McCamley and Joan Swyny

Cricket comes back to Mooloolah By Ben Haycroft The inaugural Mooloolah Memorial Cricket Match was held last Sunday, April 26. Local Mooloolah World War 2 veteran, Jim Armstrong, has worked hard to get the paddock known as Mooloolah Recreational Reserve to be transformed into a multi-use area for the Mooloolah residents. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay organised a pitch to be placed and the grounds to be mown on a regular basis. The original paddock was cut by hand over 100 years ago by locals, many of whom went off to war and did not return.

On Sunday the Sunshine Coast women’s cricket side (Lady Scorchers) played the first game on the new pitch against a side of locals. There was an Anzac prologue delivered by Corey Watson of the Loggers Cricket Club around the flagpole, followed by a social T20 match. Lunch was cooked by the Lions club with food donated by the Mooloolah Butcher, Eureka Bakery, Mooloolah IGA and Kenny’s. A special thanks to Mitre 10 for bringing the grounds and gardens up to scratch for the day. Federal Member Mal Bough attended as his office has assisted with Jim’s project greatly.

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

What a playa This Playa Playa goes into a bar and notices a major hotie, always alone, who comes in on a fairly regular basis. After the second week, he made his move. Despite his best game, Playa Playa couldn't put a dent into this little cutie ."No thank you," she would always say. Playa Playa was determined, this little cutie was worth giving up the game. They had an instant connection, but things never got past the formalities. At the end of

the night he finally caved, "why won't you come home with me?" The little cutie said the following, "this may sound rather odd in this day and age, but I'm keeping myself pure until I meet the man I love." "That must be rather difficult," Playa Playa replied. "Oh, I don't mind too much," she said. "But, it has my husband pretty upset." Submitted by Ty, Glass House Mountains

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Wednesday and Thursday has the drive to help you get things done. When Mercury enters Gemini on Friday, the coming weeks bring your thoughts to options and ideas for more work and health efficiency. Everything shows that you are coming out of a period of struggle now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Allow your vision to channel imagination into making things that will motivate you. Venus with Jupiter and Uranus suggest that you enjoy free spirited pleasure. The weekend with the Moon in Libra, indicates business transactions, educational interests and exciting travel plans. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The Moon in Virgo, mid-week, brings out the emotional side of a companion. Who you are, shines through your soul to understand all those around you. Someone’s encouragement and support means the world to you. Emotive language is used enormously now to great positive effect. ARIES March 21 – April 20 A stream of interruptions can be distracting. However, many a good conversation is still involved. See if you can receive messages from others this weekend, rather than give out. Hear others out. As Venus has good aspects to Jupiter and Uranus, enjoy pleasures and celebrate romance.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You see the good in others and they see it in you as well. Mercury will enter Gemini from Thursday bringing its curious intellect into your professional affairs. Much of your speech comes out to others saying ‘why do you that?’ or ‘what do you really want to do?’ Voice your ideas. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This is going to be a good weekend for you with the Moon in your sign on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday, May 4 will give you a full Moon in the sign of Scorpio and that may mean you will be sharp with people. However, most of the week is balanced fairness with communications. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 If at all possible do let trivial matters go. Concentrate more on your employment matters. Strive to achieve something practical, yet be open to a soulful, understanding influence with someone close. With Mercury entering Gemini you might receive good news about shared assets. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With the planets Mercury and Mars giving a power play to Pluto, the message is about drive and determination on the job. This can bring substantial improvement in status or finances. The weekend returns the golden goose under love’s heartfelt joys with freedom and change.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Many of your talents that have remained hidden, or untapped, come rising to the surface this Thursday, as the Virgo Moon accesses inspirations. With Mercury your ruler, in your sign for the next two months, you will be in your element, learning, talking, listening, and being on the move. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Your mind and heart is filled with compassion as the Moon moves through Virgo and Libra this week. Others may thank you for your understanding and kindness.
