Hi Everyone
L
ast Friday night we headed to Peachester after work for the state school’s first Art Show. The Friday evening was the opening of the show and the exhibition continued on the Saturday and Sunday. The team of people who created the event did a spectacular job; with some subtle lighting and style they turned the outdoor area of Peachester Hall into a pretty, glamorous venue. There were also plenty of stylish mums who dressed up for the occasion providing us with heaps of talent for our ‘Out and About’ pics this week on page 21.

Inside the hall, with the use of some temporary fencing as display boards, they created a great exhibition space which featured a real mix of local talent. Cr Baberowski was there on the night and was clearly impressed with the quality of the work on display, he spoke as part of the official opening. The exhibition was a fundraiser for the school to replace the Senior Playground and to air condition the class rooms. It was also an opportunity for local artists to show their work off and sell it to people who would not normally see their art. The organisers did a great job and already there is talk about whether it will become an annual event. Regards,

Benny finally comes home By Lea Parkes

When the Gossow family of Glass House Mountains received the news that their Foxy Chihuahua cross dog Benny had been taken into a veterinary hospital in Melbourne last week as a stray, they just couldn’t believe it. Anna who had been given Benny as a gift from her daughters Holly and Kylie in January 2009 said when Benny went missing from their property over two years ago he was wearing a collar and registration tag and had been micro chipped. “After extensive search efforts we had resigned ourselves to the fact that we would probably never see Benny again,” Anna said. And while they have no idea how Benny could have made the 1700km journey, or who has been looking after him for all this time, they are just so relieved that they have him back home with them. Benny doesn’t seem too phased by the media attention after flying into Maroochy airport on Monday night he was greeted by television cameras filming the moment he was reunited with Anna and the girls. One thing that may have come as a bit of a surprise to Benny is he now has to share his home with a bulldog puppy named Rhani.

Bright future ahead for Clem By Lea Parkes When you listen to Craig Stevens, the boss at Hanson Construction Materials in Glass House Mountains, talk about local Clem O’Mara, who recently celebrated his 21st birthday, you pretty quickly realise that he expects great things for Clem in the future. Craig reckons that Clem, who completed his Diesel Mechanic apprenticeship with Hanson last year and recently took out the prestigious Acclaim Apprentice of the Year, could one day be running the company. Readers may also recognise Clem’s name from when he appeared on the front cover of Glasshouse Country News in September last year, after taking out the Queensland Closed State Titles in Go-Karting for the second time after only taking up the sport three years ago. Clem’s dad, Paul O’Mara of Glasshouse Country Auto Body Repairs describes Clem as having plenty of drive and determination. He said Clem is very humble about his achievements, taking them in his stride and knowing that it is through hard work that you make things happen. “When he was a kid Clem wanted to work on ‘big things’ and you can’t get much bigger than mining equipment. Some days he will work on dump trucks that can be worth up to 1 million dollars – getting this kind of job five minutes from home was a great opportunity,” explained Paul. If the old adage is true about starting at the bottom and working your way up gives you the best understanding of the company, then Clem has certainly done that. When he was a high school student Clem got talking to a mate’s dad who worked at the quarry and mentioned that he was interested in becoming a diesel mechanic, and the wheels were set in motion with Clem doing a week’s work experience to find out what the job was like. The following year he started a school based traineeship and a week after finishing Year 12 he started his apprenticeship with the company. Craig explained that with Hanson Construction Materials centralising their in-house maintenance
Do you suffer from Sciatica, Pins and Needles, or Burning Pain? Do you experience pain or tingling running down your leg? Or pins and needles in your hands or feet? Do your arms or legs ‘fall asleep’ or feel numb? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation - the term chiropractors use to describe misaligned vertebra irritating your nerves. So how is your spine responsible for pain and tingling in your arm or leg? It’s really quite simple. (See Image) Your nervous system is made up of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. This extensive network allows your brain to communicate with every organ, cell and tissue in your body. But once your spinal health deteriorates to the point of irritating your nervous system, you lose your potential for normal feeling and function – and a symptom develops. Sciatica is a symptom...not a cause of leg pain. 4

| APRIL 2 2014
It’s just a fancy word to describe nerve pain down your leg. The more important question is what is causing the sciatica? There are several causes of radiating nerve pain. Some of the most common are intervertebral disc injuries, tight muscles, and spinal subluxation. Finding the cause of your symptom will then lead you to the appropriate therapy. If stretching and massage haven’t worked, the cause is not likely to be muscular. For ruptured discs, surgery is often the best option. And you guessed it, chiropractic is the best option when
facility for 12 of their quarries across Queensland at their Glass House Mountains facility, this means that Clem gets the kind of experience most diesel mechanics only get from working in much more remote locations. “For someone Clem’s age, he is very well prepared and organised in his approach to his work, and he has made a valuable contribution to reducing costs for the company through our inhouse maintenance compared to outsourcing these arrangements,” Craig said. Each year since Clem has been an apprentice through Acclaim his work has been recognised, initially for outstanding achievement in 2011, and in 2012 and 2013 he received an award at the Apprentice / Trainee of the Quarter awards. This year he finally cracked the big one and received the 2013 Acclaim Apprentice / Trainee of the Year. Since completing his trade in September 2013, he has already taken on the role of apprentice supervision and has become the site health and safety officer. And while he hasn’t mapped out his next 20 or so years at work, he is keen to look at what other opportunities come his way. Clem is keen to acknowledge the support he has received from Hanson – both in his work and with his competing in Go - Karting where they are one of his sponsors. Clem clearly enjoys his job and reckons that school based traineeships are a great way to go, with one of the benefits being that it reduced the amount of time his apprenticeship took to complete by about eight months.

the cause is spinal subluxation. Two separate studies have shown that as little as 10 to 45 millimetres of mercury pressure (the weight of a coin on your hand) placed on the nerve was enough to change the nerve impulses by 40-60%. So even ‘minor’ subluxations can have a dramatic effect on the way you feel and function. The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore normal function to the spine, and reduce any nerve irritation caused by the misalignment. Chiropractors are the only health professionals whose sole focus is on detecting and correcting vertebral subluxation. If you would like to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your symptoms, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499. 6/21 Peachester Road, Beerwah. www.adjusttolife.com.au www.gcnews.com.au
Council planning placed on-hold by States demands By Greg Brown
The long-awaited Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme approval has been postponed by council to give them more time to address the State Government’s condition that council is to amend the plan to include another 1400 hectares of land for urban development. After extensive community consultation, council had excluded an area – known as Halls Creek – from being designated as an ‘Investigation Area’ for future urban development. Halls Creek is an area adjoining and to the south of the soon-to-be-developed Caloundra South master planned community; roughly north of Roys Road on the eastern side of the highway. Both areas are owned by Stockland, a major land developer of large areas across the Sunshine Coast, such as Bellvista at Little Mountain. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the State attached a condition to its approval of the planning scheme that would see Halls Creek considered for urban development. “Council wants to sit down with the Minister for Planning to further discuss the implications of this condition,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Council undertook the most comprehensive community consultation ever seen in this region to develop the scheme. “During those discussions the Sunshine Coast community made it clear it doesn’t want any urban development at Halls Creek. “There is a very strong need to protect the Sunshine Coast-Moreton Bay regional inter-urban
break as an important feature for South East Queensland,” he said. The move has come as a major surprise – not just to council – but to most of the coast community. When Mayor of Brisbane and chairman of the SEQ Council of Mayors, Premier Campbell Newman was opposed to the idea, saying at the time … “Protecting inter-urban breaks, such as those between Sunshine Coast and Caboolture is crucial. No one wants to see a 400km long continuous urban area in south-east Queensland.” It is also a position held by all the sitting Liberal National Party State Members – including Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell. In their published policy ‘A liveable Sunshine Coast for a better Queensland’ the local politicians committed to … ‘preserving interurban breaks to safeguard the Sunshine Coast’s distinct character. We are also committed to retaining the character of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.’ MP for Caloundra, Mark McArdle clarified his position, saying that the State Government was not asking for the Halls Creek area to be developed. “We are simply providing the means by which an assessment can be made. A region needs lungs to breathe and an economy to grow, so let’s see all the work and assessment completed before any decisions are made." The apparent back-flip has been condemned by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC), who have been working with council and
Caloundra Community Awards
Recently Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle hosted the second annual Caloundra Electorate Community Awards, an event that’s designed to recognise the unsung heroes of our local community. Mr McArdle said to say that he was impressed with the calibre of nominees was an understatement. “We were inundated with nominations for outstanding individuals and groups,” he said. “There was representation from the hinterland and I would like to congratulate the Glasshouse Country locals who made it as a finalist in many categories, Beerwah State School’s Support-A-Reader program, Motor-cross champion Hunter Lawrence, tireless fundraiser Shirley Ruhle, Winter Angels founder June Luton, Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Sandra Brahim and student Jesse Woods. “Special mention must also go to Alan O’Callaghan, aka the Mayor of Mooloolah, who won Volunteer of the Year, James Cran who was awarded Young Achiever of the Year, Sue Joseph of Daisy’s Place for winning Business Achiever of the Year and Dan Moodie and Tara Smithyman from Total Microsystems in Beerwah for winning Young Business Achievers of the Year. “The achievement of each and every person who was nominated was very inspirational and made me incredibly proud to be the Member for Caloundra,” he said.
State Government to protect the integrity of the Pumicestone Passage environment. SCEC President, Keryn Jones said that it was one of the worst examples of hypocrisy witnessed in the 30 years of SCEC's existence. “Prior to winning government, all currently sitting local State MPs committed to protecting the inter-urban break and the Pumicestone Passage, safeguarding the Sunshine Coast's distinct character and recognised the importance of the local community having a say in its future,” she said. “It seems now they are in government our local members are prepared to ignore their commitments along with the fragile health of the Pumicestone Passage and the strong community and council resolve that this area should not be developed. To override a clear and consistent position, particularly given the amount of land already approved for development, smacks of looking after developer interest rather than public interest,” Ms Jones concluded. The Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme sets the direction for the growth of our local communities, and is vital to establishing the priorities for years to come. Mayor Jamieson is exceptionally mindful of this. “Council is very conscious of the importance of getting the new planning scheme approved as it will provide certainty for investment, and add further momentum to our economy,” he said. “This is why council will work with the State Government to progress this issue as quickly as possible.”

By Anne Snell
Local Landsborough windsurfing legend Peter Nitschke, is celebrating his 40th year in the business and his customers are getting the presents. We caught up with Peter to reflect on a lifetime of involvement in a sport that he still loves. Peter has always been a water baby and while still in his teens he opened the first surf shop in his hometown of Launceston. Here he built surfboards but later sold the business and went travelling. While he was in Germany in the early 70’s he met Manfred Charchulla and saw his first windsurfer. Here was something completely different to board riding and the craze was spreading. They first appeared in California in 1967 and through Europe in 1970. Peter, along with his brother Michael and Manfred brought the first windsurfers to Australia and the sport took off. They started in Tassie in 1974 and then travelled the country doing windsurfer displays and giving lessons to anyone who was interested - and many people were. In fact, it became one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The idea of being able to surf even when there were no waves was catchy, and when the surf was running the combination of sail and board made for some exciting new challenges. The windsurfing craze swept the country in the 80’s and Peter became a Master Sailboard Instructor. The sport became competitive and Peter was a state champion and also competed in the preselection trials for the Australian Olympic team. He ran sailing schools in Eimeo, near Mackay and on Bribie Island, as well as a shop and school in Caloundra. These days Peter runs his business from his home in Landsborough, but is still busy with teaching. He has recently returned from a month’s tour of Tassie promoting the sport he still loves and enjoying the lifestyle it has given him. But the story doesn’t end there. As well as being a sailor, Peter still builds and designs boards for his clients, something he has done from the beginning.
While he does import some standard boards for resale, his specialist boards are handmade using timber veneers and lightweight carbon epoxy composites over foam cores, resulting in boards that are strong and light. Over the years shapes have changed as designs developed. As well as being a one stop shop for all windsurfing equipment, Peter also has a range of surfboards, including retro longboards and standup paddle boards. He can provide you with all your kitesurfing needs and more importantly give you the instruction you need to master your chosen equipment. Peter has seen a new wave of interest in windsurfing in recent years, with many folks rediscovering the fun of standup sailing with new boards and rigs that are smaller and easier to handle than the old ones. Visit his website at www.caloundrawindandsurf. com.au to take advantage of those birthday bargains, or maybe book yourself a lesson with one of the most experienced teachers in the business.

Mountain climbers and rubbish dumpers … take note By Greg Brown
There are generally two types of people who use our local national parks and forests. Those who do the right thing … and those who don’t. Those in the former category are very welcome to visit, enjoy the landscape, use the facilities as much as they like, and come back again and again. Those in the latter category aren’t given such a warm reception. According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), 20 people have been caught out and fined climbing the closed Glass House Mountains tracks since last June. Not only are they degrading the very environment they’ve come to look at, but they are putting themselves – and potentially others such as local SES rescuers – at mortal risk because of their foolishness. And they are risking a $440.00 fine. QPWS surveillance of the tracks – both open and covert – has increased in response to walkers still using the closed tracks, even after walking past signs warning them of the dangers posed and the penalties applied if they continue. A QPWS spokesperson would like to remind people that, for safety reasons, the tracks on Mt Tibrogargan and Mt Beerwah are closed, but that Mt Ngungun and Mt Beerburrum remain open for hikers and climbers as well as the Trachyte Circuit and Tibrogargan Circuit.
“The public is urged to check park alerts at www. nprsr.qld.gov.au to ensure which Glass House Mountains tracks are open, particularly after wet weather which can seriously increase instability in the area,” said the spokesperson. Local MP, Andrew Powell encourages locals and visitors alike to get outdoors and enjoy our spectacular environment. “Just do it in a safe and responsible manner,” he suggests. “The tracks that are closed have been done so for legitimate safety reasons. “Those that do the right thing will have a fantastic experience,” Andrew said. Meanwhile, within the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, the Litter and Illegal Dumping Unit have been chasing down scoundrels who think our parks and forests are just free dumping grounds for them to use. The Litter and Illegal Dumping Unit has been working with HQ Plantations, Moreton Bay Regional Council, and Sunshine Coast Council to address the number of illegal dumping incidents. And, according to Andrew Powell, they’ve been having some serious impacts in reducing illegal dumping. “As both the Member for Glass House and the Minister for Environment I welcome the ongoing partnership between my department and HQ Plantations to crack down on illegal dumping,” Mr Powell said.
Vale Cyril Davis 9/6/33 – 13/2/14
Cyril Davis was born in Jandowae, the sixth child in a family of eight. Leaving school at 14 his last school report stated that he would make a good farmer. This proved to be correct as loved the challenges of farming and spent many years farming in Jandowae, Biloela and Greycliffe farming as well as completing National Service Training before he and wife Del moved to Glass House Mountains in 1986. Their move saw them purchase a meat chicken farm, and develop a macadamia orchard at Glass House Mountains. Cyril enjoyed the new challenges and grew with the changing chicken industry. They moved off the farm in 1996 relocating to
Hempstock Street, Glass House Mountains which was when Cyril took up a hobby, making furniture with most of the wood coming from their farm. In February 2012, Cyril and Del relocated to Embracia Village at Beerwah, and in doing so made more friends. Cyril played outdoor bowls at Glass House Mountains and in recent years Cyril endeavoured to support the Glasshouse RSL Sub-branch and Senior Citizens’ Club at Beerwah as well as being actively involved in the Glasshouse Country Lutheran Church. Over the years, Cyril made many friends who will miss him and his friendly smile. Cyril leaves behind his beloved wife Del, Geoff and Louise, Cliff and Tic, Ken and Tracey, Janelle and Tony, Leon Ramphueng and his much loved grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“To date, there have been 70 cases investigated by EHP since February 2011. Of these, 53 investigations had some form of compliance action issued to alleged offenders, such as Show Cause Notices, Compliance Notices, or cleanups undertaken by the alleged offender, with 37 receiving penalty infringement notices (PINS) which range from $220.00 for individuals to $7,400.00 for corporations. “The majority of incidents occurring in HQ Plantations have been illegal dumping of material under 2500L by an individual, attracting fines of $1,760.00. “Thanks must also go to local 4X4 groups who voluntarily take part in clean-up activities within the area. “It goes without saying that we will continue to encourage people to do the right thing and not litter or dump their rubbish illegally, but it is very encouraging to see the efforts of EHP officers, HQ Plantations and volunteers in cleaning up our forest.”

Contributed by Jenny Morris Our local councillor, Rick Baberowski was out and about on March 14 informing the Glasshouse Country View members of what is happening on the Sunshine Coast Council. We had a few guests attend our luncheon at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club to listen to what Rick had to say about council plans for our area. We now have our own special View Club Banner. A big ‘Thank you’ to Kym, Joy (who kindly allowed us to use one of her paintings), and Meg from Laura May Patchwork & Craft in Maleny who did the appliqué. Meg has asked that we send a donation to the LFL Program for her work. On behalf of the Club, I would also like to thank Charmaine and two other ladies from Embroidery Gems in Beerwah who donated their time and embroidered the names and attached the picture to the banner. Pauline and husband
David helped Kym with the logo transfer and Kym finished it off with embroidery and piping. Electricity charges – things you should know Coal is considered by the power stations as currently being cheap; meaning the cost of producing electricity in Australia is cheap. So cheap that the actual cost of purchasing electricity (by the resellers – Origin, AGL etc) is the LOWEST it has been in 15 years. But Australians pay MORE than any other country for network costs, with electricity retailers operating at a hefty margin. Also, $100 to $150 of your money annually (about $36 per account each quarter) goes into a kitty so that discounts can be offered to ‘special customers’.
HOW TO SAVE $$$ - what uses energy in your home?
There’s an incredible range in annual electricity and gas consumption between different households in Australia. Some households with three or four people have quarterly bills of only a few hundred dollars, while others the same size have bills of over $2,000. Households with large bills are the ones who really need to take a second look at how to save energy in the home. The more you use, the more ways 1300 4 SOLAR can find to save you money. Your energy use is the result of many decisions made over the years on things like the house design, its orientation, lighting, hot water systems installed, the appliances you’ve bought and how you live your life. Being energy efficient is all about making the most of the energy you pay for. Being efficient does not mean sitting in the dark, shivering in winter. It’s all about being smarter with the way you use energy.
Here’s a typical breakdown of electricity use from one house we audited that had air conditioning, gas hot water, and about 80 low voltage down lights.
Led lighting
The LED lighting revolution is here! That means you can change your 50 watt low voltage down lights to LED lamps that use 10 watts each. Choose your LED products carefully and stick with known, reputable brands. CHEAP IS NOT ALWAYS CHEAP!
Hot water, heating and cooling
We looked at what was installed for hot water, heating and cooling, and suggested some simple behaviour changes. With each, we listed the cost and annual energy savings so it was simply explained what percentage savings we could find, as well as how much it would cost to deliver savings, and how long it would be before that investment can pay for itself. Insulation can save $$! Up to 35% of heat escapes from a house through an uninsulated ceiling. Uninsulated walls count for a further 15 to 25% of losses and uninsulated floors account for 10 to 20%. Improving the insulation throughout the house is
an effective way to reduce heat loss and save money. You’ll be cooler in summer and cosier in winter. And insulation is surprisingly inexpensive.
Electrical appliances
Do you really need that second fridge? If not turn it off, it is probably very old and uses an excessive amount of power. Ask yourself do you really need your second fridge? If so consider buying one of the new energy saving fridges that use around only 500 kW per year. The following items use this amount of power:- 3% laundry – 13% computers and TVs – 4% standby power – 14% kitchen appliances – 21% heating and cooling – 45% lighting. Their individual use all add up to quite a bit of energy! Many appliances have standby losses, so where you can, turn them off at the power point, save power and money. So switch off standby power wherever possible.
The worst offenders include computers, DVD players, microwaves and electric toothbrushes. Most microwaves use more energy to power their digital clock than to heat food. That’s because they are on standby mode 99% of the time. So, it makes sense to switch them off at the wall. Wash in cold water as often as possible. The detergent will kill germs and remove odours by itself. Only use the machine when it’s full because washing just a few items or washing a full load uses just about the same amount of energy. Dry your clothes outside on sunny days and avoid using the electric dryer. The dryer is a big user of power, so only use it sparingly. The sun is, after all the cheapest source of energy. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from our years in energy efficiency consulting, it’s that every home is unique and that the way everyone uses energy at home is also unique.

What is Probus?
Contributed by Val Machin Come along and see! We are the Glasshouse Mountains Probians. We no longer work full time, but provide opportunities to keep minds active, expand interests, build new relationships and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. We participate in monthly meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Usually our Probus members at the City Botanical Gardens meetings are held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club but for this month only we are at the Beerwah Community Hall. Starting time is 10.00am. Our speaker for April is Mr Tony Moorhead who will speak about ‘Haemochromatosis’, which is an inherited iron overload disorder. We provide a free morning tea and our members bring along a small plate of food to share for lunch. We have Matilda Fruit Barn donate a fruit and veggie basket as a lucky door prize. Our monthly outings to various and interesting places are always popular. Last month we caught the train and visited the City Botanical Gardens, we then caught the ferry to South Bank for lunch and then went on to the Art Gallery for the latest exhibition called ‘Falling down to Earth’. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Call Val, our membership officer for more information on 5494 1406 or just come along next Wednesday, April 9, at 10.00am at the Beerwah Community Hall.

Orchestra to hit the sweet notes
The new musical director of the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra, well known Beerwah Violinist Donna McMahon, will be using her baton to bring together a group of over 50 musicians including Landsborough string teacher, Anne John as they perform some of the best known works written for orchestra on Saturday, April 5. Anne will be leading the cello section of the orchestra in the program ‘How Suite is That’ at the Lake Kawana Community Centre, Bokarina on Sunday, from 4.00pm which is a collection of sections of musical suites of the late romantic / early modern era. All the musicians have given up their time to rehearse weekly for this concert, with all of the proceeds, thanks to the Bendigo Bank’s sponsorship, going to CCSA Hall, Caloundra. This community hall is operated by a volunteer committee which organises daily programs for the locals. Tickets priced $15.00 for pre-sold and $20.00 at the door, are available on 0411 141 580. Health Check The Power of Raw
Sleep problems
McCloy Dental can help solve your sleep issues. Sleep apnoea is a serious medical condition that can increase your risk of heart failure, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure and decrease your life expectancy by eight to 10 years. Sufferers have a high incidence of headaches, reflux, and may grind their teeth and feel tired and ‘cranky’ during the day. Those with sleep apnoea, can spend 10 hours in bed, but get only one to two hours of ‘real sleep’. No-one can feel rested, or recover from any medical or health problem after that. The most common cause of sleep apnoea is a blockage of the airway during breathing while asleep. This blockage may be due to excess weight, the epiglottis or the lower jaw. Sometimes dental treatment, which changes the position of the lower jaw, or a night guard, can stop you from suffering from sleep apnoea. Health Check The ideal treatment from sleep apnoea will always be a CPAP machine. But not everyone wants to use one. Some lucky people will be in the group for whom repositioning the lower jaw willlogo work.& new photo of them both Include The difficulty is to determine who is in that group without wasting money and risking your health by investing in an appliance, which will not work for you. The Healthy Guru is excited to be joined by a great Foodie, Liz Gilbert Grant. Leanda the business owner of The Healthy Guru Beerwah met Liz at one of her workshops on the Gold Coast and found the workshop so informative and the food so yummy that after a quick talk both ladies agreed to host a Raw Food workshop at Beerwah. (Sunday, April 13, Beerwah Community Hall). Identifying the need for us to be more informed about the nutrition in our foods today, Leanda is very passionate about what our foods can give us and the ways they can impact on our bodies and mind. So the chance to work with Liz is most welcomed. We hope to bring a new insight in what creating a good diet can achieve for your own personal wellness. In our clinics we are asked a lot about meal planning and preparations and in our workshop we will show just how quick, easy and inexpensive great meals can be, served quickly and full of nutrition for the whole family. For more information on Liz go to www.feelgoodrawfood.com and to book for the Beerwah workshop please contact Craig or Leanda at the Healthy Guru 5439 0097.

The Public Servants’ Prayer
Although we assist all things here below Grant that Thy servants may go slow That they may study to comply With regulations till they die. Teach us oh Lord to reverence Committees more than common sense And train our minds to make no plan And pass the baby when we can. And when the Tempter seeks to give Us values of initiative Or when alone we go too far Chastise us with a circular. Mid war and tumult fire and storms Give us strength to deal out forms And may Thy servants ever be A flock of barren sheep for Thee. O Lord grant that this day we come to no decisions, nor run we into any responsibility but that all our thoughts may be directed towards establishing new departments forever and ever Amen. When I saw the stupidity of narrowing Simpson Street in Beerwah to make it a parking traffic hazard it reminded me of the above poem. Gordon Wright, Glass House Mountains
Where is the evidence?
No proponents of the proposed motor cross bike facility have presented any evidence supporting the contention that illegal or nuisance riding or 4WD use will be reduced. Where are the statistics from other facilities around the country to support this? You cannot use it as an argument unless you provide such facts. And what of illegal 4WD’s in parks? It will have no effect on them and they are an equal menace. There needs to be substantial charges to support the facility, which is meant to be a paying commercial proposition. Most current riders in National Parks and on private land are looking for a free ride without restraint. Is Minister Powell currently measuring current off-road vehicle usage in parks etc so that he can make a before and after comparison? If there is no difference after the facility is built, will he then dismantle the facility? I suggest the real problem is that no Queensland government has put serious resources into policing off-road vehicles in parks and nuisance areas. There needs to be an off-road licensing and training system along with serious policing and fines. It is my view that illegal off road use by bikes will increase because these areas will be used as cheap training venues for users of the new facility. Then what of erosion? How many proponents of this idea have inspected the area and seen the current damage being done to the forest on existing 4WD tracks? The soil is the typical friable loamy sand of Wallum, subject to immediate stripping once vegetation is damaged. That silt washes into the creeks, changing the ecosystem and eventually will clog Bells Creek and Mooloolah River. Tracks on even gentle slopes strip to rock within a short time, and the less intrepid riders then seek new tracks. Thus there is continual widening and erosion, with undermining of tree roots and eventual death of adjacent vegetation. Incidentally, BMX is out of the question – it would be impossible to ride in that loose sand. Five different types of tracks are proposed for the area, each with its own facilities, which would entail clearing large tracts of forest. 12 |
| APRIL 2 2014
And has anyone given thought to the poor residents in the northern part of the area? The noise of only two bikes is ear splitting, what of several hundred? Fitting all off road bikes with silencers would solve many problems and avoid the need for sound barriers. The noise of even two bikes at full throttle is well above Queensland Health Standards. Roger Callen Beerwah
Off-road motor cycle facility
Contrary to the Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Management Committee’s claims (You Said It, Glasshouse Country News, March 19) the Queensland Government is committed to protecting, preserving and managing our protected areas. I can assure readers the proposed Sunshine Coast off-road motorcycling facility will be built with due consideration to any environmental impacts, and will in fact have an immediate environmental benefit in helping to reduce illegal riding in nearby National Parks and state forests, including plantation forests. The precinct cannot be located in ‘neighbouring pine plantations’ as suggested, as they are privately managed and operated ‘working forests’, with heavy forest harvesting and planting machinery. Drivers and riders are currently putting themselves in great danger by accessing prohibited areas in these plantations - our proposed facility will actually improve safety for participants by providing them a safe area to ride. The proposed location is in a formerly logged native forest area and conditions on the development and operation of the facility will ensure possible impacts on the site and surrounding area are mitigated. These conditions will enable the Queensland Government to ensure that the facility balances the sporting and recreational interests of riders with environmental and social responsibility. The public will have a chance to comment on those conditions in June this year. Steve Dickson, Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
Re: GCNews ‘Ultimatum on Rail Duplication’ article
This story raises many issues. Firstly, it would appear that this government is fast becoming a ‘won’t-do government’. Like their federal counterparts, they seem to be hell bent on blaming previous governments for all the world’s troubles, but they can’t seem to offer any solutions. While the effectiveness of the previous governments could be questioned, to continuously blame them does not appear to offer a vision for the future. It would be good if negative politics could be forgotten for awhile and replaced with solid and honest administration. Secondly, the treasurer keeps reminding us that we have been saddled with a massive debt. This maybe so but there seems to be no statements on our ability to repay. I have debt. It’s called a mortgage. I can sell my house and get rid of the debt but I choose not to because I have the ability to repay. Surely our state government has the ability to repay its debt whilst making sound economic investments for the future? This country has managed massive debt before. At the end of World War 2 the ratio of debt to GDP was 104%. At present it is well below the OECD average. As for the railway itself, it has been reported as one of the busiest sections of single track in Australia. Lack of duplication has seen it
become an economic bottleneck. It should be remembered that the track does not stop at Nambour. It is part of a state wide network that is used for hauling freight and long-distance passenger trains. Duplication of the track would allow for more passenger services to Brisbane, faster freight services and the elimination of lengthy delays at level crossings. It would also be required for the construction of a railway to Caloundra and Maroochydore, which appears to have been forgotten by the government. It is my understanding that the previous state government had acquired a corridor of land sufficient enough to have the track quadruplicated to Nambour with an anticipated completion date of 2026. Some of us would see that as a sound economic investment for the future. Others would see that as contributing to state debt and, therefore, a reason to do nothing. Brad Boustead Glenview
Community spirit at work
Since March 5 when our Mayor helped the Twinnies unveil the wishing wells at 13 Parkside Drive, Beerwah, $274.00 has been paid into the wishing wells and a further $250.00 donated in prizes for future fundraising events. It's great to see such community spirit and we hope everyone can take a walk from the Beerwah Marketplace via the public walkway and give the Twinnies a wish for their future needs of a permanent home for their Pelican and Seabird Rescue and Rehabilitation centre. Yvonne Taylor Beerwah
Sharing the road
Michelle of Peachester (GCNews January 15) should be pleased to know that from April 7 motorists will be able to cross centre lines (including double unbroken centre lines) provided they have a clear view of any approaching traffic and it is safe to do so. Fines for cyclists breaking the road rules will also be increased to the same amounts faced by motorists. Rather than feeling annoyed at cyclists, perhaps Michelle should be grateful that there are people engaging in an activity that has huge physical and mental health benefits and has no impact on the environment like motorbikes and cars. We would like to ask our local community if there might be someone who has some musical talent who would like to visit once a month for half an hour to play the organ with / for the children. You would need to hold a Blue Card or be prepared to apply for one (no cost for volunteers). If you would like more information please contact Ali on 5494 1248 Tuesday to Thursday. Charlotte is showing her musical talents as she plays the drum

School News from Felicity Tasker Glasshouse Country Christian College correspondent I’m a Year 11 student at Glasshouse Country Christian College and this year I am going to be writing a regular student column for Glasshouse Country News. This month’s topic is about our GCCC Year 11 adventure camp. Last week we went to Emu Gully campsite, just outside Toowoomba, where we all worked together on our teamwork, leadership and many more different skills. The group I was in was a great group, but at the start of the week we didn’t work well together. We had many dominant people and some who didn’t want to participate. We had lots of challenging tasks and at the end of the week we were involved in the activity, appropriately titled, the ‘Kokoda trail’. This activity really revealed how much we’d grown as a group. It was incredible to see us work hard as a team and show support for each other through the thick, sloppy mud. We helped each other up a steep hill and kept our injured comrade safely stretchered to the end.
Student Art Show
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School recently held an Art Show featuring the work of its' students. Artwork created by all classes from Prep to Year 7 was on display. Parents, carers and community members were invited along to view the exhibition. Principal Kristy Walton said the Art Show was a perfect opportunity for people to come and see what kids can do and see their point of view on things in life. The artworks were created in a broad range of

Delicious sweets, gelato, refreshments, no bookings required This was our group! The group that began the week fighting and not getting along, finished the week getting along better than ever. We weren’t overthinking it, we weren’t yelling at each other. We completed half of the mud activity being allowed to talk and the second half we were all put on ‘mute’ – that is, none of us were allowed to talk! The second part of the mud was very thick. Trying to get all of us through, plus someone on a stretcher was so hard, but we did it and I hadn’t seen us work any better as a team all week! It was great! I loved it so much. media including drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. Students were excited and very proud to have their works on display. It was a wonderful way to showcase the diverse talent and creativity of the students. Artwork is regularly displayed within the school and art is recognised as an important part of each student's learning journey.

Beerburrum Soldier Settlement During World War 1 it became apparent that servicemen returning after active service would need some help to re-establish themselves in civilian life. By 1918 the nation had a major problem as many of these ex-servicemen and women were also suffering from the after-effects of wounds, disease and what was termed ‘shell shock’. In several districts around Australia, land was acquired or allocated from Crown Land, and farm blocks were made available under various Soldier Settlement Schemes. A large tract of land centred on the township of Beerburrum was one of these designated areas, and the first blocks were allocated by ballot in November 1916. This is an example of a government policy made with the best intentions, but lacking in some practical aspects. In later years reviews of the scheme showed that the farming blocks were too small, the soil not suitable for the recommended crops, few of the men had farming experience, few had any capital to tide them over the early stages, and many were suffering the after-effects of physical and mental trauma.

However at the time, government effort and money helped to set up facilities for a greatly enlarged population, including a state training farm, state store, larger railway station, hospital, schools, guest house and recreation hall. Many of the farms failed and families left, but some settlers managed to survive and make a success of the farming venture, and their descendants still live in the district. Guest speaker at the next PHC meeting on Sunday, April 6 will be Paul Sutton, a member of the Adopt-a-Digger project which involves researching and commemorating the service of WW1 diggers from the Sunshine Coast region. Paul has focused his research on the Beerburrum Soldier Settlement, aiming to identify and document the 600+ families involved in the scheme. Anyone with an interest in Beerburrum’s history is welcome to attend. Meetings start at 11.00am and include a shared lunch. If you have information or photos related to the Soldier Settlement, or any questions about Paul's research, he would be happy to see you at the meeting.

Local Music Scene Roses for the Damned
By Sonia Clark Up and coming local lads ‘Roses for the Damned’ have just released their first self titled E.P. Based on the Sunshine Coast, this four piece hard rock band of teenagers are fast developing a dedicated fan base. Forming in 2011 while still at high school, the boys met through putting up an ad at a Coast music store and via their local network of friends. Lead singer Angus Caffrey met up with Beerwah High drummer Lucas Whittaker, Linc Morse - another Beerwah High student joined as the bass player and Lewis Toms joined as lead guitarist after the original guitarist left. The band picked their name as a reference they felt best encapsulated the 80’s hard rock genre. They have a deep appreciation of this style, having all grown up with parents that heavily influenced their love of bands like Guns and Roses, Iron Maiden and Motley Crue. While they all enjoy a diversity of musical influences that are reflected in their shows - everything from Black Sabbath to Twisted Sister, the boys are quick to reassure us that their shows feature more rock and no spandex! Starting predominately as a covers band, the lads have played over 40 gigs to date, with highlights including playing shows at the Hi Fi Bar in Brisbane that enjoyed a great crowd turnout as well as numerous Coast events and gigs at local halls and hotels. They still play a mix of covers but are moving towards playing more of their original compositions as featured on their current EP. Slowing down for Uni commitments, the band are currently concentrating on selling their E.P, looking at radio play and seeking to play at more local venues. Their E.P. can be purchased directly or streamed online. For more information and links check out their Facebook page Roses for the Damned and be sure to support our local talent. Awe inspiring musical experiences
Last night I shot bolt upright in bed, crying. I had dreamt an extraordinary piece of music in the style of the composer JS Bach – towering contrapuntal music, and around me at the concert in this beautiful church others were crying. Is the imagination so powerful that it can do that to you? It got me to thinking about my most awe inspiring musical experiences? I began a list that quickly grew so I whittled it down to a few major composers and works: I stand in wonder before the late string quartets of Beethoven, marvel at Stravinsky’s creative genius in the Rite of Spring, am enchanted with the magical colours that Debussy conjures, and swept away by the emotion in a Mahler, Wagner or Richard Strauss work. At the top of my list then, all so called classical composers and music. That makes sense - having dedicated more than 20 of my most formative years to this music, my appreciation comes from learnt experience. It is something that I have gained through my musical training. But I wonder too how much of it might be intuitive. I had the impression I was brought up in a family without music in its blood and without any musical opportunity being presented to me (being a boy at a time when only girls had music lessons). Then one day in my twenties my father asked me if he could have a go at one of my harmonicas. Now, normally you don’t lend your harmonicas to anyone, but this was my father, and it was an unusual request - I had never heard him whistle, or sing. I had never even seen him listen to music, and I knew what he thought of my music. My father took this harmonica and he started playing tunes on it - simple old blues and folk tunes, and after a few blows he put it down and went back to his sports page. I stood there mouth agape - I couldn’t say anything. What could I have said? I leave you with these anecdotes to encourage you to ponder some of those awe inspiring musical experiences in your life. Are they, on the one hand as ordinary as your father playing the harmonica, or have you awoken having composed your own Bach? Whatever they might be, indulge in them and have a great musical month. Safe Night Out strategy
The Sunshine Coast is one of 15 areas that has been named a ‘Safe Night Precinct’ under the new 12 month trial aimed at reducing drug and alcohol fuelled violence. Drunk or drug affected people in the Sunshine Coast’s party precinct who start fights or break the law will face firmer penalties under the new strategy. The strategy will include the establishment of 15 Safe Night Precincts across Queensland, compulsory alcohol and drug education in all Queensland schools from Years 7 to 12 and tougher penalties for people behaving badly or violently around licensed premises including increased on the spot fines for causing a public nuisance, refusing to leave licensed premises and obstructing police. ‘Coward punch’ deaths will be punishable through a new offence of unlawful striking causing death with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and offenders required to serve 80% of their sentence before being able to apply for parole. Police will also be able to issue banning orders and there will be mandatory ID scanners in venues trading after midnight in ‘Safe Night Precincts’. The draft Safe Night Out Strategy was developed following months of consultation with Queenslanders including an online survey that attracted more than 12,000 responses. I also want to thank the Glass House residents who took the time to respond to my online survey calling for feedback on drug and alcohol related violence. A copy of the strategy is available at www.qld.gov. au/safenightout and will be open for public comment for four weeks, with the final plan subject to review in 12 months.
Glass House Volunteer Awards
I am pleased to announce that nominations have now opened for my annual Glass House Volunteer Awards. As in previous years, I will be hosting a ceremony in Glass House so we can publicly celebrate and extend thanks to our volunteers for their ongoing involvement and dedication to our community. Volunteers really do keep our community ticking and their support for community groups and the disadvantaged in our society truly is invaluable. If you know someone in your community that deserves recognition please let me know. Nominations close on April 11. Call my office to be sent a nomination form or download a copy from my website – www.andrewpowell.com.au

Hinterland Groups get a boost from Energex Fund Well done to two local groups who were recently awarded funding from the Energex Community and Sustainability Fund. The Eudlo Hall and Recreation Groups Association received $7,500 for upgrades to an amenities block and Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Inc was awarded $6,000 to plant native trees on Meridan Plains College Grounds to connect to nearby wetland rainforest. The initiative is now in its fourth year and injects important funds into local organisations for community-based and sustainable projects thanks to the sale of Energex’s scrap materials.
Safe Night Out Strategy – Have your say There has been a lot of talk lately about a rise in alcohol-fuelled violence and the serious and deadly impacts it, particularly one punch, can have on a person’s life and their families. Unfortunately it can happen anytime, anywhere, as we witnessed right here in Caloundra in 2007 when surf lifesaver Josh Mill tragically lost his life after receiving a fatal blow while waiting for a taxi after a night out. The State Government has released its Safe Night Out Strategy, an initiative aimed to stamp out alcohol and drugrelated violence in nightlife precincts across the State. Key strategies include compulsory alcohol and drug education introduced in Queensland schools from Years 7-12 and tougher penalties for people behaving badly or violently near licensed premises. People have until April 21 to have their say and I, like my colleagues, encourage you to do so. Visit www.qld.gov.au/safenightout www.gcnews.com.au

Are you interested in the zip line concept for Kondalilla National Park?
The Queensland Government have offered Obi Obi Gorge in the Kondalilla National Park at Montville as a possible site for commercial adventure tourism, and a zip line is currently being considered. The National Parks Association of Queensland is hosting a public seminar at the Montville Hall (Memorial Close, off Main Street, Montville) on April 10 starting at 7.15pm, on what the idea will mean for the National Park and for the local community. Issues looked at will include the site suitability, will public access be affected, is commercial development appropriate in National Parks, and will the development add to the conservation of the Park? A panel of speakers will present a variety of perspectives with the opportunity for interested locals to find out more and to ask questions. Cost is $5.00 to cover the hall hire and tea / coffee. To RSVP, contact 3367 0878 or register on-line at www.npaq. org.au (and click on Upcoming Events).

Plant of the month
Coast Banksia
Banksia integrifolia
I have simply called this species Banksia integrifolia though there are three sub-species of this Banksia, integrifolia, compar and monticola. Coast Banksia can be found growing naturally from the sandy dunes close to the coast to the lowlands and hills from northern New South Wales to north Queensland. This tree may reach 20 metres though it is usually much less. Stiff, pale yellow flower spikes are produced from late summer through to late autumn. Flowers produce good quantities of nectar attractive to bats, bees and a range of bird species. The dark green leaves are stiff and leathery with wavy edges, and grow in whorls at the ends of branches. Juvenile leaves may be sharply toothed. All leaves are pale underneath with a soft hairy surface. All Banksias produce woody follicles which require extreme heat or fire to release seeds.

Planting for Bountiful Harvest The Mad March weather is over, hopefully leaving us with some beautiful gardening weather ahead. Now with Easter just around the corner, there is a load to do in the garden to ensure a bounty harvest over the coming months. Legume crop preparation and planting There are numerous varieties of peas and snow peas available. My personal favourite has to be the Sugar snap type where both the peas and the pod are delectable at any stage of growth. Gone is the wastage of a stringy pod or dated peas! It is best to get your legume bed ready for your peas and snow peas early, as it can take time to adjust your soil pH to 6.5-7.5. I scatter a good handful of dolomite per square metre to achieve this and a generous scattering of Dynamic Lifter before mixing it through the soil. Strawberry preparation and planting Now is the time to get in and plant strawberries! Strawberries are technically a perennial, so they should live for a few years producing fruit. However, around the third year the plants can become more susceptible to disease and should be removed. So to prepare your patch, all you need to do is dig lots of mushroom compost, dolomite and chook manure and/or blood and bone. Then mulch and leave the bed to settle until you have your runners or plants ready to plant. As for the maintenance, just sprinkle some dynamic lifter around at flowering time and keep the moisture up by watering around the plant without wetting the leaves and fruit. It is really the most wonderful time for the veggie patch and planting now will ensure a feast during winter. Until next time, happy growing! April plantings Vegetable Tomatoes

Preparation
Intervals
Make a mound of compost / soil / manure and mulch well. Plant seedling or seed into a pocket filled with soil or seed raising mix. Plant cherry tomatoes around teepee and full sized tomatoes with stakes. Dig in some Dynamic Lifter and Dolomite along a trench aiming for a pH of 6.5 – 7.5. Plant seeds direct to a depth of 5 cm. Trellis tall varieties or you can try sowing them in hanging baskets. Adjust pH to 6.5 with dolomite lime and add Potash sparingly. Ensure you plant an early season variety e.g. California Red Plant corms pointy side down into soil adjusted with lime to pH 6.5. You can purchase corms from fruit shops, but ensure it is a local variety. I’ve found the larger varieties to work best. Finely tilth soil and scatter approximately ½ cup blood and bone per sq.m and lime to pH 6.5 – 7.5. Plant seeds direct. Dig in a good scattering of blood and bone and dynamic lifter, and adjust pH to 6.5 – 7.5 with lime. I also try to follow a nitrogen fixing crop (e.g. beans) to ensure adequate nutrients. Raise seed in punnets or in-situ. Dress soil with lime to pH 6.5-7.5 and apply a good handful of blood and bone/ sq.m. Seed can be soaked in warm water prior to direct planting to aid germination.

The Mission of Salt!
Whenever Jesus told a story, there was always more to His words than we see at a quick glance. He gave an interesting description of people that would choose to follow Him. He called us salt. ‘You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt loses its saltiness how can it be made salty again?’ (Matt 5:13) Why salt? Not sugar or iron or some other random element? Salt is an amazing substance. Here are some facts about salt and what it might mean for us. 1) It’s the only element that dissolves equally in hot or cold water - we are to serve both those who know Christ and those who are yet to believe. 2) It preserves - as we serve, the truth of the gospel will preserve the lives of others. 3) It heals - God’s love through us will heal the hurts of others, even if the truth might sting a bit at first. 4) It adds flavor - we are to enhance our environment and circumstances with the life giving love of Christ. 5) Salt is always in the shape of a cube - even when ground to a fine powder, it’s always cubeshaped. We are all equal at the foot of the cross. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

APRIL 2 2014
Even when ground down by life’s trials, our identity in Jesus cannot be changed. 6) Sodium and Chloride (NaCl is salt) has a bond so strong it cannot be broken. The only way for salt to lose its saltiness is if it is contaminated by something else. Unless we are compromised by false teaching, God’s Word and relationship with us as His children can never change. 7) It makes people thirsty - as we relate to people as effective Christians, they will begin to thirst more for the truth and seek a relationship with Jesus. 8) It makes man-made things rust - we must realise that material things are of lesser value than eternal things. The closer you are to God, the less you will desire to have the latest and greatest possessions. Have a Salty day!

Contributed by Kerry Roach Last Monday the Landsborough Tennis Club opened their courts to all the local primary schools for the annual District Competition. Seven schools from the district took part in the competition with students from as far as Delany Creek entering. This year Amy Sawyer from Glass House Mountains State School won the Girl’s championship, with Emily Roach (Glasshouse Country Christian College) as runner up. Dylan Kerr from Peachester State School took out the boy’s trophy with Jonty Corkin (Maleny State School) as runner up. Overall eight students were selected to now move on to represent the Glasshouse District in the Regional Competition to be held at Kawana on April 23 and 24. Good luck to all those students. Many thanks to Wendy Stott from Glasshouse Country Christian College for coordinating the District Competition this year. It has been fantastic to see so many young children playing tennis. The Landsborough Tennis Club strongly supports young children to participate in the sport. Courts are available for hire seven days per week for as little as $10.00 per hour. Becoming a member of the club also allows you to play free daytime tennis. Get the family together and come down for some fun. For more information on hiring the courts and membership please contact Dawn Wendt 5494 1085. The Landsborough Tennis Club held their Annual General Meeting last Tuesday. The new committee for the club are; Greg Daniel (president), Dawn Wendt (treasurer), Lou Gonano (vice president), Kathy Hill (promotion/publicity officer). Secretary and maintenance officer to be advised. Many thanks to all those who attended the meeting and supported the club.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Caitlin rides the waves to success Contributed by Tara Cooper The demands on Year 12 students are huge and for Pacific Lutheran College student Caitlin Gilliman, it’s just one of many demands – and achievements – she successfully juggles on a daily basis. The high achiever represented Australia in kayaking last year, and placed sixth in the world. She recently scored second place in the U19 ski event at the state championships for Surf Life Saving – and is a regular hot contender at Surf Life Saving’s pinnacle event, the Aussies – and Caitlin has also competed at the state titles for surfing. As if that’s not enough on this teen’s busy schedule, Caitlin also manages to find time to study for a Bachelor of Education and Science (majoring in HPE) at the University of the Sunshine Coast, full
time – on an early entry uni pathway only offered to select school students who demonstrate outstanding academic, personal and community achievements. Caitlin was officially recognised for her high achievements at the weekend, as one of 200 students state-wide to receive the prestigious RSL Youth Development Program award. She scored a grant worth $2,500, which will help fund her trip to compete in Hungary in June.
Little Athletics head to state championships Contributed by Cassy Sutton Twenty five athletes from Glass House District Little Athletics Club and six athletes from Maleny Little Athletics club travelled to Cairns for the Queensland
State Championships on March 21. For many of the team members, this was their first trip away with the club. During the weekend competition, 15 athletes qualified for finals. Many athletes improved their entry times or distance over the weekend, despite the very wet and humid conditions. Ten athletes from the GDLA team gained medals - five gold, three silver and two bronze. One Glass House athlete broke the State record in long jump. All the athletes had a fantastic experience and are very grateful to all the parents and team leaders who came along, especially Rachael!
BEE GEES
Landsborough Tennis Club
Contributed by Jill Kirchheiner Friday Night Tennis – Five weeks of tennis matches gone already and two of those were wet. Let’s hope that the rain stays away on a Friday afternoon for the rest of the season. Hope that all the players are learning how to score and also to ball-boy for their matches, particularly the older divisions, and not relying on parents or other adults to score for them. Please make sure you turn up for your match before the start time, as the time given is when you start playing on court. An old man went to the doctor complaining that his wife could barely hear. The doctor suggested a test to find out the extent of the problem. “Stand far behind her and ask her a question, and then slowly move up and see how far away you are when she first responds.” The old man excited to finally be working on a solution for the problem, runs home and sees his wife preparing supper.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 Someone you know could benefit from a lucky break! It’s a good week to go about quietly weighing your options, and making plans. There will be sudden bursts of brilliance, new views and new technology. Mercury and Uranus join in your sign and with Mars in your opposite sign of Libra, expect life changing events. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Your inner self is charging up to be ready for major changes. Planets indicate that there are people in your environment with whom you could do without, so hidden forces burst into awareness. There may be covert power struggles, with school, religion or in-laws. Best to not let jealousy or possessiveness win out. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Your association with a new group could open you up to bold new possibilities! This week is the start of a month not to allow yourself to succumb to high pressure tactics. By the weekend there is a chance to be decisive in a personal matter and enjoy a boost in vigor and vitality. See if you can spruce up your image. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This week may fire up a frantic eclipse triggered month ahead! You may find many around you are restless, impatient or going through upsets in their major life areas. This is very risky to try and dive in to help other people at this time. No doubt you will try, but that is when you will see explosive ego personalities.
Week beginning 02/04/14
6
LEO July 23 – August 22 This week may see you enter into social commitments cautiously as the blind date that seems initially like a good idea, could turn out to be not much fun. Concentrate on making household decisions. The chatter of friends throughout the weekend can be stimulating and it is worth your while to encourage experiences. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This is not the week to fall for a grandiose scheme that puts your money into a friend’s pocket or a group project. Everything over the next two or three weeks is just going to be quite unpredictable in shared funds. Just stick to a sound plan instead. You will enjoy the weekend as Venus enters Pisces bringing romance. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Keep an open mind to ideas that others propose, however evaluate them before taking action. It will be hard to find stability on any financial plan under this month’s stressful planets. Just stick to reliable and proven commodities. Take advantage of a chance to smooth out relationship difficulties and get along with others. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mars is retrograde as well as Saturn and this puts strict controls on your demeanor. Extreme stresses under these planets keep you over active during the day and frustrated at night. It’s time to listen to a partner who sees the bright side and can supply security to anchor your nervous nature. Don’t take rigid stands at work.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With skill and finesse you can profit from changes that are foisted upon you. It is necessary to be generous with your time, where relatives are concerned, just to keep the peace. You could get valuable payback in terms of information you require. Mars with Saturn, retrograde, are pulling you into old romantic trysts. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 There may be angry hot headed people around you this week who don’t agree with you, nor can make their point peacefully. It is good to know that you may be the voice of reason against dragging conflicts. The best advice this week is not to try to manipulate the outcome of a relationship, lest you are caught meddling. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Venus is in your sign for the first week and is a popularity magnet. Everybody wants to be your friend. When Venus enters Pisces you may win prizes or a raffle, however you won’t want to spend it all on yourself. You will feel generous and charitable, ready to put your earnings into something idealistic to help others now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 With Venus moving through Aquarius through the first week it’s a time to heal your body with reflexology, massages and swimming. It’s a good week to spend some quiet easy time with those close to you whose values are not based on ego or greed. Unexpected monies pitch in for a new start. Trust your own ideas.

“Honey,” the man asks standing around 20 feet away “what’s for supper?” After receiving no response he tried it again 15 feet away, and again no response.
