Hi Everyone...
I try not to bang on about the weather in my column each week, but can you believe that it is still winter? On Sunday we headed up the hill to the thank you afternoon tea for the hard working volunteers who make up the behind the scenes team at the Maleny Show, and I couldn’t believe it – even on a winter's day in Maleny no jumper was required! The hall was packed with over 120 people sitting down to afternoon tea put together by the crew from MEGS (for those not in the know – that is the Maleny Equestrian Group). And while not everyone that was involved in bringing the show together was there on the day, it is a reminder about the level of community spirit that is required to come together each year for an event of this size and the many different community groups that actually get involved. While I am not on the topic of weather, the weather was definitely on side with the Maleny Show this year, which may have assisted in the bumper crowds coming through the gates. Thanks to everyone who made the Maleny Show another great event.

Cover Story All invited to the Birthday Bash! Contributed by Simon Denver The Maleny Players turn 40 this year. To help celebrate, an open day is planned for not only the Players but all Maleny-based theatre groups, all performers old and new – or even anyone just thinking of becoming involved in theatre. Maleny has theatrically punched above its weight for years and can boast of having or had at least eight different performing groups, who have performed 650 times in over 230 different shows in over 18 different venues. More than 950 people have been on stage or behind the scenes, they have performed works by over 100 playwrights and musicians and have been directed by over 70 directors or musical directors. That is a quite amazing list of statistics which will be available to peruse through at your leisure on the day. To celebrate these facts, and their own birthday, the Players are opening up the Maleny Playhouse at the showgrounds this Saturday, August 5, from 4pm. There will be a plethora of past presidents and guest directors present, as well as six current presidents of coastal based companies who have all had a working relationship with theatre in Maleny. Many a tale will be retold, myths will be busted and new folklore created. It is it shaping up to be a highly amusing walk through the past – and hopefully a glimpse into the future.

How hard would your property be to find? By Sonia Clark Last week GC&M News was contacted by Adam Russell who is the Queensland Ambulance Service Officer in Charge at the Maleny Station about the ongoing importance of reliable property identification. Adam was keen to highlight the need to ensure property identification visibility and not to overlook the need for regular maintenance which can vitally assist when a crisis occurs and a property has to be located in a hurry. As a veteran paramedic with over 35 year’s industry experience, Adam has been stationed at numerous localities throughout Queensland including very isolated communities. He has been Officer in Charge at the Maleny station for around 18 months and the ‘Single Officer Response’ region catchment includes a vast area from Landsborough through to Conondale and beyond. Adam is the first to admit the majority of local residents are fairly good at providing what is needed, but there is always room for improvement. “It can be a bit of a challenge for us if property identification is not maintained – especially if it’s dark and the responding officer is also manoeuvring the vehicle and listening to instructions. Another concern is that if neighbouring properties are not clearly marked and the officer is ‘counting down’ to a property location it can be very easy to overshoot the address.” It is vitally important that the responding paramedic is able to quickly identify the incident location in an effective and timely manner to facilitate intervention
OIC of Maleny Ambulance, Adam Russell and treatment to those in need. Some of the instances that Adam has encountered since his transfer to Maleny include faded reflection quality to either all or part of the posted number, blocked numbers by way of overgrown foliage, wheelie bins or vehicles, numbers too small to read from the roadside and the oversight of painting over the number displayed. “Most residents have good numbering and identification however it is very easy once it's installed to overlook the need for simple ongoing maintenance. It’s not just the mail delivery person who needs to know where you are – folks often need reminding they know where they live … we don’t and we may to get to you in a hurry.” Adam recommends that residents stand at different angles in the approach to the front of their property to ensure that their numbering is clearly visible. He also highly recommends the use of reflective numbering. A simple act of timely maintenance on your part, ensuring visible property numbering, could potentially save the life of you or a loved one.

NBN towers explained Continuing in our series where we look at the recent NBN wireless broadband tower development proposals, this week we review 54 Red Road, Beerburrum.
NBN Tower – 54 Red Road, Beerburrum (MCU17/2002) The proposal is for a 50m lattice tower with one parabolic dish antenna and three panel antennas attached to provide fixed wireless broadband to more than 240 properties in and around Beerburrum. Although most of the township receives an ‘A’ quality broadband ADSL with a median speed of 20.36Mbps, the more rural properties receive a ‘D’ quality ADSL broadband service with median ADSL speeds between 6.04Mpbs and 9.79Mbps. The wireless coverage from the tower will extend about 4.5km north to Moffats Road, 1.5km east past Clemo Road, more than 1.5km west past Cobb and Co Road, and more than 2.5km southeast past Male Road. The tower is a transmission end site within the fixed wireless network, providing only a service to the local community. It is intended to transmit data straight back to the approved fibre hub site at Elimbah, which has already commenced construction. A total of nine sites were investigated, seven were responsive or interested, and of these only three were viable options from a fixed wireless service perspective. As the result of an assessment, NBN
r S I T E N O W 35 6 0410 511
chose the Red Road site as the optimal location. The area is typically predominantly single detached dwellings on large, rural allotments, including tracts used for forestry activities. Separation between the proposed facility location and the closest known dwelling on an adjoining property is approximately 190m to the west. The application documents deem that the proposal is compliant with all the relevant planning scheme codes and provides an important community benefit, and as such should be approved by council.
Beerburrum local says not enough communication A landholder who lives near to the site of the proposed tower at Beerburrum isn’t happy with the level of liaison from NBN up to now. The Beerburrum man, who asked not to be identified, said that the only contact he had with NBN was two years ago. “We received their letter asking if we were interested in hosting the tower on our land – which we weren’t – but since then we’ve had no knowledge of the tower proposal,” he said. He now discovers that the site of the large 50m lattice tower is in the direct line of sight between his house and Mount Tibrogargan, ruining the picturesque vista they now enjoy. “I’m not against the tower or NBN, I just wished that they came to see me before they submitted
the application to council. Moving the tower a small distance would mean that they wouldn’t be in our eyeline – or anyone else’s. “It’s just disappointing that they didn’t liaise with locals before now to iron out any of these small problems.” NBN representatives were sympathetic at the drop-in information session held at Beerburrum last week, but it’s unknown whether the company will take any notice. “They said they’d get back to me, but I still haven’t heard anything from them. “I’ll have to make a submission to council when the planning public submissions open, and hope for the best.” Next week, we’ll look at the 75 Link Road, Glass House Mountains proposal.
The story about the NBN Tower – 127 Appaloosa Drive, Conondale (MCU17/2006) will also be included in the August 9 edition

By Sonia Clark Since June 2016, Vietnam Veteran Rob Eade has been travelling around Australia on a self-funded quest to commemorate the lives of the nearly 600 veterans who have died serving their country in conflicts ranging from the Vietnam War through to the present. On Friday July 28, Rob visited Maleny and placed a flag at the Maleny Cenotaph to honour Dayle William Morrison who was born in Maleny and served in Vietnam. Sadly Dayle, who served with the 2 RAR Battalion was killed on January 26, 1968, during Operation Coburg. Having only recently been made aware of Dayle’s Maleny connection, the local RSL is planning to add his name to the Maleny RSL Honour Board in time for Vietnam Veterans Day on August 18. Rob served in the Australian defence force from 1965 until 1986. He was originally inspired to undertake this national commemorative venture after watching Youtube footage of an American man who placed flags around the country to mark American soldiers fallen during the Afghanistan conflict. Rob said, “As far as I knew no one has done a similar type of commemoration in Australia and I just wanted to honour these men and women. “I figured I had the time on my hands and after four months of initial research I decided to buy a motorised trike and trailer to travel the country
Gordon Hurford, Secretary of 2RAR Association, with Maleny RSL members Denny McIver, President Clarke Alexander, Peter Fitzgibbon, Bill Richter and Rob Eade (on bike) laying these flags,” explained Rob. Armed with 600 flags donated by Port Kennedy IGA, Rob has been contacting local RSL branches and clubs around the country to raise awareness of the venture. Travelling along with his dog Ginge, Rob envisioned that he may complete his task by June 2018. Follow his Facebook page ‘Remembrance Ride Oz’ for more details.

Casia Faron’s Haiku exhibition Red Door Arts will officially open the exhibition titled ‘Haiku’, featuring the work of Beerwah artist Casia Faron, at Vianta this Friday, August 4. Casia describes her painting as beginning with a single stroke. As more strokes are added, the work becomes a complex system of line and tones, light and shade, movement and balance. “My method of creating grants me a freedom to be present with my work – to practice mindfulness and self-reflection through the act of mark making,” she said. Casia uses colour sporadically, either in pools, strikes or washes to intentionally disrupt or flatten the picture plane. There is nowhere familiar to go with these works. No prior knowledge. No hints. No familiarity and no reason. The work is what it is. There is no beginning and no end. The viewer’s eye is left to wander and explore the work.
BEERWAH
Casia began with oil paints in 2007 and progressed to aerosol/ street art mural-type work. Since moving to Beerwah she has developed a more organic approach to her art making and now prefers using inks and watercolours. She has completed an Advanced Diploma in Art and Creativity from a New Zealand based art school, and currently volunteers at Beerwah State School teaching art. ‘Haiku’ will hang at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, until August 27, and the official opening is at 6.30pm on Friday. For table booking on the evening call Steve at 0431 730 275. To enquire about hanging an exhibition at Vianta, call Michele at Red Door Arts 0412 936 361.

Vale David Hockings Maleny local Francis David Hockings AM, who was known by many for his passion and knowledge of Australian native plants, the contribution he made to the horticultural industry and, more recently, as an author, passed away on Monday July 17. David was born on Thursday Island in 1928, and was fascinated at a very early age by the plants and insects of his local area. After World War II the family were evacuated to Brisbane, moving to Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland to begin dairy-farming and it was here that he met and married his wife Olive in 1950. David became interested in the native orchids in both the rainforest area and other local habitats and on meeting an orchid enthusiast from the Department of Agriculture & Stock, was encouraged to sit an entrance examination which led to a lifelong career in Horticulture. David and Olive and their family of three young children moved to Toowoomba in 1960 where David began his 40 years of employment in what would become the Department of Primary Industries. His work included providing advice to ornamental nurseries, home gardeners and the cut-flower industry. Being frequently asked questions regarding pests and diseases led him to write his book, ‘Friends & Foes of Australian Gardens’ and at the same time he was very involved in the activities of the Society for Growing Australian Plants and the Qld Naturalists Club.
David and Olive receiving a certificate acknowledging David's 60 year association with what was called the Society for Growing Australian Plants, now Native Plants Qld In the 1990s, he established his cut-flower plantation at Maleny, exploring and proving the cut-flower potential of selected native plants and flowers for the domestic and export trade. He propagated those with most potential for sale to other flower growers to satisfy the exporters’ needs. This became a very challenging and rewarding effort for both him and Olive up to 2012. In 2007, David was awarded an AM in recognition of his contribution to horticulture and particularly the cut-flower industry. His interest in finding new suitable native plants with cut flower potential continued to the end of his life, with some selections still in production for nursery and cut flower trade at the present day. Sadly, ill health in the last five years has meant he was unable to actively pursue his love of ‘going bush’ to find some more promising plants for garden and cut-flower use. David’s legacy will carry on in gardens across the country.

Towerless NBN for Maleny & Hinterlands will conduct an information kiosk and seminar on August 23 at the Maleny Community Centre. A spokesman for Towerless NBN for Maleny & Hinterlands said the sessions will cover: • Latest NBN proposals and possible future proposals for our area • What impacts might the proposed ‘Smart meters’ / ‘Advanced Meters’ have on people • What does a proposed upgrade to 5G mobile phones mean • What you can do to protect your family if the above technologies are actually implemented • Kiosk display – noon to 2pm. • Information session in the Verandah Room – 2pm to 4pm. The spokesman said that information will be given on the extent of NBN’s proposals, how and when objections can be made, plus what the Sunshine Council might do about it following the recent Land and Environment Court decision relating to three sites which council had previously refused. “Smart meters may cause severe illness after their installation – hear a real life story,” he said. “If these unwanted increases in radiation do occur, learn what you can do to help overcome their impact on your family and life.” For further information contact Jim Straker – 5494 3229 or email zrowaste@sctelco.net.au.

From a Russian with love
Recently GC&M News was contacted by Innessa Hook who, along with her husband and young children, settled in Peachester approximately a year ago. Innessa, who originally hails from Russia, has been so taken with the beauty and community spirit of the area that she made contact in order to share her growing love and appreciation for her life in this beautiful Hinterland region. Singer-songwriter Innessa grew up in Kirov, north east of Moscow, and met her husband travelling through Spain. Wanting to be nearer to their Australian family, the couple moved to the Sunshine Coast around eight years ago, but only decided to buy property at Peachester in April 2016 when they realised that they could enjoy acreage living for the same cost as a small house block or unit living elsewhere. “I grew up in Russia and was travelling from city to city, from country to country for a few years – and so moving to a little farm-like area was a big decision for me,” Innessa said. “After we signed our house contract I spent one month in agony, initially thinking, ‘what have I done?’” However, the longer Innessa lives here the more she loves it, and the more she grows to appreciate what her family now has. Living in Peachester has provided a whole new nurturing experience for her and her four and six year old daughters.
Find us on Facebook facebook.com/glasshousecountry&malenynews
“My heart melts every morning seeing our girls running around our property, finding little adventures, collecting flowers, chasing chickens and riding their bikes,” she said. Some of the simple pleasures that Innessa and her family enjoy include filling baskets with freshly collected fruit, going for a walk and turning up at the neighbours’ houses with no prior arrangements, giving away extra crops, having a chat and feeling welcomed and being able to receive some produce in return. Innessa loves that she can take her child to school on a bicycle, and enjoy her daughters’ “screams of excitement” when rolling down the hill, waving to the horses and cows and greeting neighbours who are walking past. “I love this community feel – something I haven’t really experienced before. The centre of Peachester, with only one store, a cafe and a phone box, reminds me so much of the outskirts of my native town in Russia – Zavodskaya Street, where I spent my early childhood. “Only that street doesn’t look like that anymore, it’s developing rapidly, losing its rawness and quietness.” Innessa has found that walking along Peachester Road with her kids has an almost therapeutic effect, touching all sorts of strings inside her as it reminds her of the carefree times of her childhood when she and her sister would run around similar streets looking for adventures. She feels very appreciative, although it’s slightly surreal, to find a place on the other side of the ocean which reminds her of a little area in her home town of Russia!

Welcome mat is out for the locals After more than a decade working in the hotel industry, Ryan Dillon joined the Spicers Group at their Hunter Valley Retreat and, in February this year when he was offered the role of manager at the Tamarind, the born and bred Peachester boy jumped at the chance. Ryan explained that he loves working for Spicers. He said he had always admired their business philosophy, the relaxed luxury of their accommodation and the personal approach they provided looking after their guests. Ryan said he is enjoying his role at the Tamarind where they have the opportunity to share the fabulous surroundings and facilities of the restaurant, function room, cooking school, and day spa with the locals. He said he has a great team of very dedicated staff at Spicers Tamarind, led by Executive Chef Daniel Jarrett and Day Spa Manager Kitty Knight. “We are all really proud of working in this beautiful location, with its discrete design and natural beauty which combined creates a truly unique venue,” Ryan said. “We are really keen to make sure locals know that we are here to share it with them. We look forward to welcoming them, either back or to visit us for the first time to dine with us, to come along to one of our many events, to be inspired in our cooking school, or to be pampered in our day spa. “We find that when locals book into the restaurant they are impressed with both the quality and value for money. “We recently introduced our Thursday locals’ night where you can BYO your own wine with no corkage – it is proving popular.” They are also currently developing an events program for the rest of the year which includes the Brouhaha Brewery Dinner in the Forest this Friday night (sorry, that one is already sold out). The purpose built Cooking School provides a four-hour cooking class held each Saturday and a two-hour cooking demonstration once a month on a Sunday. And for those that are looking for the ultimate in relaxation, massage, facials or beauty treatments, you really need to take a look at the amazing menu for Spa Anise. It is open every day and they are even able to offer special group bookings for special events. The restaurant is open for breakfast every day, for lunch from Friday to Sunday, and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday.

Biosecurity workshop for livestock farmers
From October 1, 2017, sheep, goat and cattle producers – including dairy farmers who deliver animals to meat works – will need to complete a Farm Biosecurity Plan (FBP) to maintain or obtain accreditation under the Livestock Production Assurance program (LPA). The LPA program is the Australian livestock industry’s on-farm assurance program covering food safety, animal welfare and biosecurity. It provides evidence of livestock history and on-farm practices when transferring livestock through the value chain. The requirement to develop a Farm Biosecurity Plan follows the introduction of a biosecurity element into the LPA program. To meet the requirements of the LPA program, as minimum, each Property Identification Code (PIC) must have a formal, documented Farm Biosecurity Plan. Additional to the Farm Biosecurity Plan, cattle producers can choose to also have a Johne’s Beef Assurance Score (J-BAS). This has been developed as a tool for managing Johne’s Disease (JD) to reduce the effect of the disease on production and avoid potential domestic and/or overseas live-trade implications from JD. Producers who have already developed a Farm Biosecurity Plan as part of their approach to JD management will not need to complete another plan to meet LPA requirements. To assist primary producers in developing and implementing a Farm Biosecurity Plan, a series of free workshops is being run within the region. Of the closest workshops, the details are: • August 7, Gympie Showgrounds, two sessions, 8.30am - 11.30am and 1pm - 4pm (delivered by the Cattle Council of Australia and Sheepmeat Council of Australia.) See www.lbn.org.au for details and registration. • August 8, 1 Cartwright Road, Gympie, 10am - 1pm (delivered by the Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation). Friends of Mary Cairncross Association Bits and pieces With Sue Tanner Although I usually know when my little contribution to the News is imminent, I rarely have any idea about the subject of the upcoming epistle and this time is no different! So here are some bits and pieces of information you may find interesting. After a long wait the café is open again at the rainforest and driving by this morning I saw a number of punters enjoying coffee and the spectacular mountain view in the sunshine. So, pop in again for brekkie or lunch or just a coffee in the sun. Speaking of the mountains, I was wandering out of the centre the other day and overheard a woman giving the most ridiculous explanation of their formation and naming that I have ever heard. As a guide (and bossy) I couldn’t let it go by. I politely excused myself and told her in the nicest possible way that whoever had told her that was WRONG and pointed her and her group to the viewing platform where the story of the Aboriginal legend and the reason for their naming is written for all to see. The vollies at the desk can also give you a printed version of the legend in several languages. As you will know there are some brilliant permanent displays in the new Discovery Centre, but did you know that an enthusiastic team of council staff and volunteers change the non-permanent ones every couple of weeks? There have recently been displays of butterflies and fungi and, earlier this week, Tony Bright was preparing a display of the crayfish which are in Fryars Creek at the bottom of the rainforest, ready for the next change. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. To find out how to become involved check out www. friends-of-mary-cairncross.com.au or call 5435 0348.

Building trust and making a positive impact in the early years For early childhood teacher Racquel Grant, being part of a child’s early years is both a privilege and an important responsibility. It is in those first five years of a child’s life where their experiences help shape the adults they will become. Racquel has recently joined the Glass House Mountains learning community after moving from Forster in New South Wales, where she has spent the last 15 years working in early childhood, completing her Bachelor degree, and raising a family. She is now embracing the next chapter of her professional career as a kindergarten teacher at Goodstart Glass House Mountains. “I moved here to be closer to my family,” said Racquel. “The Glass House Mountains are beautiful and the people in the community are amazing. I’ve had such a warm welcome and I’m so excited to be working in the early learning space,” said Racquel. “Before joining Goodstart, I was a Year 2 teacher which I loved, however I strongly believe birth to five is where the foundation of children’s lives are built and it’s where I want to be to make a positive impact.” Completing her Bachelor of Education – Early Childhood (Birth to 12 Years) was a 7.5 year journey for Racquel, who continued working while she studied part time at the Early Childhood Institute at Macquarie University. “It was definitely tough at times, working and studying, and raising three children, and with my husband working away and then having to deal with my Dad who is very ill, I had some challenges along the way. “But every time I completed a level, first my Certificate, then a Diploma qualification, then starting my Bachelor, I was compelled to know more. I really wanted to develop a deep understanding of children and learn the best teaching practices. So I kept going,” she said. As the program coordinator for her class of 26
kindergarten children at Goodstart, Racquel is responsible for developing a program which helps children build and extend their language, literacy and numeracy skills, learn to be creative, and build their independence, so they can enter ‘big school’ with confidence. Part of her teaching style is to take a personalised approach to a child’s learning based on specific needs and interests of each child. “In our class, I like to link learning experiences to children’s interests, and explore how deep we can go into a particular subject matter. It’s working within the zone of proximal development, which is a concept which explores how people learn within the timing of their individual learning. “For example, a child brought popcorn in his lunch box one day and wanted to know if it was a ‘healthy choice’ for morning tea. This led to a whole discussion around where popcorn came from and he was so curious to learn it actually came from the vegetable corn. “I then took this curiosity and created a whole learning experience around this for the whole class. We explore the science behind popcorn and change in matter, which is actually part of the science aspect of our program. Having a background in primary education helps me to understand what learning experiences will benefit the children when they go to school. “As a class, we did research on the iPad and the Lenovo, using technology to look at pictures of a corn field, and we used literacy and maths to explore where corn and popcorn comes from, we even made popcorn that afternoon and children got to watch it pop and hold it, and taste it. So it was a whole scientific, literacy, numeracy and sensory experience. “Children were also encouraged to use their words to explain how the corn becomes popcorn and were able to draw pictures to illustrate this using their creativity and problem-solving skills. “This really excites me, because I get to observe how children engage in learning, what excites them, what makes them curious, and how they
interact with the learning experience, and also with their peers. “I can then share these observations with parents through our online system Storypark, so they can better understand how their child engages in learning,” she said. Racquel also believes above all, the relationship you have with a child shapes the way a child learns and develops. “As an Early Childhood Teacher, it’s really important for me to establish those beautiful trusting relationships with children. The foundations for these trusting relationships come from the circle of security, which is very much the Goodstart way, it’s one of their underlying philosophies. “Relationships are the basis of learning. If they don’t have that valuable relationship with their educators, children won’t engage as effectively, with you or with their peers. This is where I see the potential to make the most positive difference. “I feel really blessed to be part of children’s lives.” Goodstart’s kindergarten program is underpinned by the Australian Government National Quality Framework.

Locals win Savour awards
The Tamarind Restaurant, Maleny has won the best Asian Restaurant category at the 2017 Queensland and Northern Territory Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence. General Manager and Restaurant & Catering Australia member Ryan Dillon said, “This award is great recognition for our dedicated team of chefs headed up by Dan Jarrett and our amazing front of house team. “Spicers Retreats has a huge focus on quality food and beverage experiences at all their retreats and we are just so proud to have won the best Asian Restaurant category.” Tamarind’s Executive Chef Daniel Jarrett said, “This is a fantastic achievement by all the team. It is also great for the Sunshine Coast region as we have so many quality restaurants in the area and so much amazing local produce to work with.” While Pomodora’s on Obi, also at Maleny, took out the best restaurant in a hotel/motel/resort, only five of the categories were taken out by restaurants on the Sunshine Coast. The one in Ocean Street at Maroochydore and the other two were in Caloundra, so it looks like our end of the Coast is setting a very high standard. More than 450 local restaurants, cafes and catering businesses gathered to celebrate the achievements of their peers, who were judged across 38 categories.

The last Chamber meeting was held at Club Glasshouse and again we were spoiled! Thank you to the team preparing our nibbles. Guest Speaker was Andrew Fairbairn, Commercial Development Manager, Visit Sunshine Coast, our Tourism Marketing Body. According to Andrew there are huge possibilities for our region in the Tourism Sector. He was extremely surprised when he found out what the group Celebrate Glasshouse Country have achieved with no money, just mere people power and he is excited to now be part of it. There is money available for projects, for events etc but we have to submit detailed projects to gain access. The Chamber will do its utmost to facilitate and help wherever possible but behind all of this are the people at the forefront. If anybody is interested in Tourism, wants to start a Tourism Venue, Tourism Accommodation or a Souvenir Shop, please let us know. To become a member of the Chamber you just need an ABN (Australian Business Number). You can download the Application Form from our website www. glasshousecountrychamber.com.au. Alternatively you might want to join Celebrate Glasshouse Country; give Judy Tomlinson a call on 0408 445 988. Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Meet and greet
A big thank you to the residents who came for a chat at my recent Meet and Greet session in Beerwah. The topics of discussion were road safety and maintenance, development enquiries, tree maintenance, NBN discussions and Translink services. My next session will be held for the Glenview/ Palmview area on September 8 from 10am to noon, so please drop in if you would like to chat about council projects and local issues. The Beerburrum quarry extension application has also been a topic of conversation. The Beerburrum community recently held a meeting in the local hall to understand what this very significant development application could mean for this historic town, its residents, students and visitors. The meeting was well attended and locals got to hear from the applicants (the Barro Group) and ask some tough questions of them. I had asked council's planning officers to also attend so that locals could ask any questions on how the assessment process worked and clarify how they could make a submission.
Parks update
The latest stages of the Glass House Mountains District Park are now under construction, with a range of new facilities including a playground, dog off-leash area, amenities building and car park being added for the community to enjoy. I’m sure it will become one of those ‘must see’ places for locals and visitors. This is in addition to significant improvements at Landsborough’s Pioneer Park and Beerwah’s Turner Park, which are both underway now. Stay tuned for completion dates so that you can plan a visit!
Solar Farm
It was a special moment for the region when our utility scale solar farm was plugged into the grid on Monday July 24. This means your council is the first in Australia to more than completely offset its electricity use for the foreseeable future. It just makes sense from every angle; financial, environmental and social. Big thanks to council staff who have been passionately committed to seeing this innovative project through to completion. Check out the solar farm for yourself on Coolum-Yandina Road – you can’t miss the 57,000 panels that cover 24 hectares on the solar farm site!

State Member for Caloundra Events at heart of our community spirit The Sunshine Coast is well known for major events including the Caloundra Music Festival and Noosa Food and Wine. They involve thousands of people and attract an audience from across Australia. They add to who and what we are as a region and we can be thankful they are run by competent people. Yet there are smaller local events that are similarly important. They celebrate a location and call upon the local community to be part of the festivities. Just as the larger ones, the smaller, more personal events are to be treasured and honoured for the spirit they engender. It is with that in mind I say we are less than a month away from perhaps one of my favourite locally grown events, the Beerwah Charity Sports Day. Can you believe this fundraiser started an astounding 46 years ago? It has certainly become a fixture of the annual calendar for Hinterland residents, and Bruce and Helen Page have been involved with its organisation since the start. Bruce tells me that in the beginning it was a simple sports day and lunch stall, featuring a small selection of athletics. The event has taken off since that first year and it hasn’t looked back. Today we have cake and produce stalls, a talent quest and the much loved ‘Show and Shine’. For nearly five decades the Beerwah Charity Sports Day has raised vital funds for Cancer Council Queensland, but I believe the most compelling part of the event is how it brings the locals together for a common cause. As Bruce said, in a small, close-knit town like Beerwah, a cancer diagnosis is felt by the wider community, which is why this event has really stuck in the heart of locals. The sports day is truly owned by the people of Beerwah and it is their community spirit that makes the fundraiser such a success. It will be members of Rotary who will greet you at the gate and the Lions will be putting on their famous barbeque. The local churches organise plant and produce stalls and of course all the delicious baked goods. So, join me on August 26 for what I am sure will be another fantastic day out in Beerwah to support Cancer Council Queensland.
50th celebrations
Why not head along this Sunday, August 6, to Sunshine Coast Stadium to enjoy ‘Our Sunshine Coast Concert’ in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast. Hear a 100-piece orchestra, 200-voice choir and 100-voice children's choir, a Beatles medley, and original songs written to celebrate the occasion. There are plenty of other events to celebrate the anniversary too, like the Peachester Community Hall event ‘Inigo Jones & the Deluge – meal, movie and memorabilia’ on Friday August 11 as well as the ‘Loving Landsborough Day’ on Saturday August 19. Tax Time Homing in on holiday rentals The ATO is reminding taxpayers that it’s paying close attention to rental properties located in popular holiday destinations around Australia. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year the ATO identified a large number of mistakes with deductions for rental properties, particularly with regards to holiday homes. “We’ve noticed some people are claiming deductions for holiday homes even where the property is not genuinely being rented out, or genuinely available for rent,” Ms Anderson said. “There’s no problem with people using their rental property for their holiday, but holiday home owners need to remember they can only claim tax deductions for expenses made during a period when
the home is rented out or genuinely available for rent.” Property owners also need to understand that if they rent their property at a discounted rate, or ‘mates’ rates’ they can only claim deductions equal to the amount of rent charged. “One taxpayer had to pay the ATO back over $45,000 in tax from deduction claims made for a holiday home they were renting out to friends and family below the market rate.” Ms Anderson said the ATO is focused on using data to identify errors. “Property owners should be aware that incorrect rental property claims will not go unnoticed. Technology enhancements and extensive use of
data is allowing us to identify incorrect or suspicious claims. We also have a good idea of the locations likely to be used for holiday homes.” Ms Anderson said that all rental property owners, particular those who rent out holiday homes, should always double-check their claims before lodging their tax return, and follow a couple of simple rules. “Firstly, make sure that you declare all rental income and only claim deductions for periods that the property is rented or was genuinely available for rent, and make sure you have accurate records of expenses, and strong evidence of the property being rented or genuinely available for rent at market rates." For more information on holiday homes, visit ato. gov.au/holidayhomes.
Low interest rates set to continue – a challenge for retirees
Low inflation and economic growth in Australia means that rates will remain lower for longer. While low rates may be good for homebuyers, this is a real challenge to retirees who rely on interest as the main part of their income. Things were easy when interest rates were 7% or higher, giving you more than enough income to live on. At current rates of less than 2%, the interest earned on most term deposits doesn’t even cover the rising cost of living (which is around 3% pa). To simply protect your standard of living, you need to earn more than this. Diversifying your retirement income away from cash and term deposits is the only way to receive more income, but this strategy comes with risks. All investment products carry some type of investment risk and generally speaking, the higher the return, the higher the risk that comes with it. Choosing the right investments as well as the best mix of investments is crucial to improving your income and reducing the overall risk, protecting your capital.

Tax Time Pull your socks up, but don’t claim them The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is increasing attention, scrutiny and education on work-related expenses this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that last year over 6.3 million people made a work-related expense claim for clothing and laundry expenses, totalling almost $1.8 billion. “We have seen claims for clothing and laundry expenses increase around 20% over the last five years. While this increase isn’t a sign that all of these taxpayers are doing the wrong thing, it is giving us a reason to pay extra attention,” she said. Ms Anderson said common mistakes the ATO has seen include people claiming ineligible clothing, claiming for something without having spent the
money, and not being able to explain the basis for how the claim was calculated. “I heard a story recently about a taxpayer purchasing everyday clothes who was told by the sales assistant that they could claim a deduction for the clothing if they also wore them to work,” Ms Anderson said. “This is not the case. You can’t claim a deduction for everyday clothing you bought to wear to work, even if your employer tells you to wear a certain colour or you have a dress code,” she said. “For your clothing to be eligible for a deduction, it needs to be occupation-specific clothing, protective clothing or a uniform that is unique to the organisation you work for.”
Ms Anderson said it is a myth that you can claim a standard deduction of $150 without spending money on appropriate clothing or laundry. She said that while record keeping requirements for laundry expenses are relaxed for claims up to this threshold, taxpayers do need to be able to show how they calculated their deduction. “Over 1.6 million taxpayers claim a deduction of exactly $150. We expect many of these claims to be legitimate but the results of our random audits show that people are making mistakes.” For more information about work-related expenses, visit ato.gov.au/deductions and to find out about myDeductions, visit ato.gov.au/mydeductions.
Mortgage myth buster: things you need to know about mortgages Taking out a mortgage to buy a home is a big step. There are a number of mortgage myths in circulation. Here, we bust some of those preconceptions, to help you make the right decision. Mortgage myth #1: The lowest rate is always preferable. Some lenders advertise lower interest rates than others but the lowest rate might not be the most competitive. Sometimes, a low rate incurs other fees, which a slightly higher rate may not. The lowest rate might not be the most flexible, and may not have other interest saving features that a slightly higher rate loan product might, e.g. an offset account. Mortgage myth #2: You need a 20 per cent deposit to secure a mortgage. Housing affordability reports such as those compiled by CoreLogic assume buyers have a 20 per cent lump sum deposit. Because of this,
some buyers believe they cannot secure a mortgage without the 20 per cent lump sum. But this is not the case. The Reserve Bank of Australia states that some lenders accept a deposit as low as 5-10 per cent. Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI) can reduce the deposit required. The cost may be rolled into the mortgage or can be paid as a lump sum. Getting into the market now rather than waiting until you have the full 20 per cent deposit might be advantageous, an option worth considering. If you don’t have the 20 per cent deposit, ensure you are not overextending, as a lower downpayment will mean larger repayments and interest costs over time. Mortgage myth #3: You need to pay mortgage broker fees. The lender pays the mortgage broker, not you. A mortgage broker helps you get a competitive loan that is right
for you, and weigh up complex decisions, such as low interest rates versus higher fees. Mortgage myth #4: The Reserve Bank of Australia controls the rate, so rates aren’t competitive. While the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) changes their rate depending on economic growth, lenders are able to adjust their rates independently. The lender’s rates will likely reflect the RBA rate, but lenders are also concerned about being competitive. Reviewing your loan regularly to ensures it is the most competitive option for you. Mortgage myth #5: Pre-qualification secures your loan. The purpose of prequalification is to let you know how much you are eligible to borrow. This does not mean your loan is approved. You will need to provide further documentation, and receive approval to secure the loan.
Mortgage myth #6: There is no difference between paying your loan weekly, fortnightly or monthly. This is not true. Paying your loan fortnightly will mean you pay less interest over the life of your loan. You will pay even less interest if you pay it weekly. School News Serious competition at Spelling Bee
Year 6 camp for Mooloolah State School
Contributed by Peter Voigt Beerwah High students set a new record for participation in the school’s third annual Spelling Bee Tennis Tournament, with more than 180 students taking centre court in this year’s event. Students battled in teams of four, spelling their way through a knockout tournament until These Year 7 Beerwah High the eventual champions of their stud ents have already started grade were crowned. dreaming of 2018 glory With many students returning for a third year, tactics were at the fore, with teams agonising over the appropriate time to use their tactical cards that afford spellers the chance to get a little help on particularly difficult words. The ‘team play’ card continued to be the most cherished, allowing teammates to join the speller at the desk and formulate a communal spelling of the word. The ‘reserve’ card was also used often, allowing a speller to get a replacement word at the current difficulty level. This year the introduction of a new card titled ‘count-me-in’, which informed the speller of how many letters the word contained, proved to be very popular. It was awesome to see that our unique competitive format replicated a real tennis format, with some teams progressing by playing aggressively and opting to go for several ‘powershots’ during a game, while others teams won the day by playing a more controlled and safer game. While the excitement and thrill of competition created a very boisterous and exciting centre court, all matches were battled out with good spirt, fair play, complete engagement and all round sportsmanship. It was an absolute delight for teachers refereeing the matches to observe the collage of on-court groans, giggles, shrieks, laughter, tension, screams of delight, excited banter and roars of success. It was wonderful to see students spelling with such a high level of engagement, excitement and enjoyment.
The Mooloolah community would like to thank everyone for attending our annual rodeo and for helping to make it a huge success. We are looking forward to next year and we will have a bigger grandstand and more food vendors. This was our second year of running the rodeo and we are overwhelmed in how supportive people are. We would like to thank all of our sponsors, especially our major sponsors Beerwah Hotel, Palmwoods Hotel and Whites IGA Mooloolah.

Recently the Year 6 students from Mooloolah State School attended Tallebudgera Beach Camp on the Gold Coast. The students were extremely excited and could not wait to board the bus for a week of fun and adventure. Once at the camp the students supported each other and participated in many team building exercises, individual challenges and group activities. Some of these activities were High Ropes, Canoeing, Body Boarding, Swimming, a visit to David Fleay Wildlife Park, tobogganing and Pirate School. The activities encouraged teamwork and independence for all the students at the camp. For some this was their first time being away from home. Maddy reckons it was the best time she has ever had and loved the high ropes and tobogganing the best, while Cooper said “the camp was awesome and I did things I have never done before, Tallebudgera is the best camp ever”.
Age no barrier to fun
Grandparents/Special Guests Day is always a highlight on the calendar at Beerwah Community Kindergarten. Recently the Kindy children played host to their special guests, inviting them to join in the fun. Grandparents painted, dug in the sandpit, rolled play-dough, read stories, played board/card games, joined in egg and spoon races and, best of all, danced and sang with their grandchildren. There was a wonderful turn out of support and every child was able to proudly share their Kindy experience with someone special to them. Landsborough’s Lone Pine
Links to the Gallipoli battlefield have taken root in Landsborough. During Landsborough State School’s 2017 Anzac Commemorations, Peter Hyde from the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch presented the school with a Lone Pine sapling. The seedling was planted in a carefully selected location in the school grounds, visible not only to students but also to passers-by. Last week, the project was completed as the school took delivery of a commemorative plaque and stone which has been placed beside the tree. Landsborough State School is extremely proud of its new living Anzac memorial and thanks the Glasshouse Country RSL for their donation. The memorial is a place where students can reflect on the sacrifices made more than a century ago and is a celebration of all that their sacrifice has meant for modern day Australians. Student leaders Georgina, Jake and Molly proudly show Peter Hyde the completed Lone Pine memorial

Exciting new programs at the Centre Centre coordinator Ange Hardey is thrilled with the way the local centre has gone from strength to strength over the last few years. As she and her team continue to explore exciting new initiatives, Ange is keen to incorporate and promote key values of the Centre including continued learning development and engagement opportunities, local community collaboration and sustainability. As part of her commitment to providing the best leadership possible, Ange is currently studying an advanced diploma in Community Sector Management, and she is super excited to share some examples of the great new programs and community initiatives set to launch this year. “The focus for this year has been all about providing a more sustainable service and strengthening our bonds with the local community,” explains Ange. With this in mind, Ange and staff members have been in discussions with the local environment group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network). Meeting with representatives of the group, staff at the Centre are thrilled with the group's offer of help to establish their outdoor area with all local native plants and species as well as assistance in setting up educational programs which will educate and encourage families to discover and support local ecosystems and source and grow sustainable bush tucker plants. All plants donated will be sourced from local GMAN nursery members and some of the edible plants that are being considered include Midyim Berry, Davidson’s Plum and Lilly Pilly. “Gwen from GMAN has been absolutely fantastic in helping us get this project up and running and we are so appreciative of the benefits from this

fantastic community partnership,” enthuses Ange. To assist in educating the children and their families about endangered species and to support the local ecology, the Centre will be hosting an information evening on Thursday August 10 from 5pm. Families and members of the community are invited to attend this informative discussion led by GMAN members which will explore supporting the survival of the unique Richmond Birdwing Butterfly at home and at the Centre. Families will be encouraged to plant Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines to attract this rare butterfly species. Bush tucker plants suited to the area will also be discussed and the idea is to share knowledge to create gardens with native plants species and bush tucker. Another exciting current initiative involves the majority of staff training towards achieving their ‘Cosmic Kids’ yoga qualifications. The idea is to incorporate regular yoga practice at the Centre to assist with relaxation and effectively rest both children’s minds and bodies. “This will be a great activity for our children to look forward to and we should be rolling this out by the end of the month. It will be like a special Centre ‘incursion’ activity that can split up the day, it calms – but also has physical activity benefits.”
A dedicated room at the Centre is being setup for yoga practice and the program follows the goals of the Centre’s Healthy Body Program to promote healthy habits while supporting behaviour and positive social interactions.

Glass House Early Education Centre has thrown its support behind the ‘Share the Dignity’ August collection drive and has offered to be a local drop off point for sanitary item donations. Helping those who cannot access sanitary products when they need them due to factors such as homelessness, poverty, or escape from domestic violence – this year the foundation seeks to help over 85,000 Australian women and girls. Realising that thousands of women simply can’t afford sanitary products and are forced to improvise to make sanitary items, the charity seeks to restore dignity to these women and girls by providing access to pads and tampons. Since the first sanitary drive in 2015, Share the Dignity has grown into a national charity which has collected over 650,000 packets of pads and tampons, from collection points in businesses, schools and other locations all over Australia. The drive will run from August 1-31 and items can be dropped off at the Centre Reception area.
Community call out! Donations are still required for metal forks and spoons to assist in the creation of art projects such as wind chimes.

Connecting with NBN
GC&M News on colour trend
While Mr Giles continues his crusade against the NBN it appears his campaign is about desiring fibre connection to replace ADSL. He seems oblivious to the fact that some properties are unable to connect to ADSL and must rely on internet cafes or mobile broadband. Yes, we have poor internet due to lack of investment and foresight, not the NBN’s fault. In Australia, we have three people per square kilometre. It is not viable to connect everyone with fibre, so why is Conondale so special over Hunchy? Regarding fibre, do not encourage the community to unite to self-fund it! I look forward to being connected to an NBN tower soon without objections from non-Hunchy residents. David Harrison Hunchy
When our Maleny Advertising Rep Tina dropped off last week’s paper to the team at Judi Coey Optometry she couldn’t help but notice how well the cover colouring matched in with Rachel’s hair. We aren’t sure who is setting the colour trends, but we are loving the extra pop of colour our new masthead is adding to the paper each week.

We recently purchased Tiger Air cheap air fares for return flights to Sydney, only to have that flight from Brisbane cancelled, with no notification beforehand. We were put on another flight later in the day, which ended up with us having a six-hour drive in the dark to our destination. Arriving at Sydney Airport for the return flight, as we went to check our bags we were informed that the flight was cancelled and, after a lengthy phone call to their customer service inquiries line, were told that the next available flight was two days later. At neither time were we notified of the cancellations, although the person on the other end of the phone said that we should have been texted, or contacted by phone or email. We were not the only ones affected, as there were a lot of unsatisfied people at the airport who were also booked on that flight. We were travelling with other family members who had work commitments for the following day, so ended up getting seats on a Virgin flight at the exorbitant cost of over $500 each for the one-way flight to Brisbane. These cheap flights that Tiger Air keep advertising are not guaranteed to fly, so I advise anyone thinking that it's a cheap way to travel to think again. We will never travel with them again, and I hope that others considering a cheap airfare will reconsider and travel with a reputable Australian airline. If you are caught out like we were it costs a great deal more than if we had used a regular flight. No compensation was offered, but reluctantly we were told that our fares for the cancelled Sydney/Brisbane flight would be refunded. Ann and Colin Parker Peachester

Disillusioned Queenslander
I returned to Queensland after some time living in NSW. I purchased a property in Landsborough and I was aware of the category of rates, which I thought was fair. However I was shocked when I got my rates notice at the many levies that were included, particularly of an amount of $90, which had no explanation. The State Government can fund rail, roads and SES through taxes already paid by the taxpayer, council should have more than enough from their rates income. I came from a World Heritage area, where rates were a set fee of about $350 a quarter. This included weekly and fortnightly bin removal plus a green waste and household waste once a year. I have never heard of these levies before. It is hard enough to buy a home without having to pay crippling rates on top. This country needs new transparent and honest government, maybe the ABC’s Four Corners could run the country. Pauline Hansen is looking better every day. Jennifer Pollock Landsborough
Appreciate their efforts
In the lead up to our Street Party in Beerwah on October 20, we have been inundated with emails. Sometimes it is easy to quickly scan an email and move on, but then we received one calling out to nominate our locals for Australian of the Year, in various categories. I thought it would be good to spread the word and encourage others to take up this opportunity, and what a great way to share the names of those people in our community who are making Glasshouse Country such a great place to live. For my money, you can’t go past the members of the Beerwah Charity Sports Day Committee – 46 years of volunteering and raising funds for the Cancer Council? Of course these people also volunteer on numerous other successful community groups too. Our environmentalists, parents, service groups, farmers, business people, leaders, volunteers – if you live in Glasshouse Country and read this newspaper, you will know of plenty of people who should be recognised for their contributions. Don’t delay – there are still a few days left. We have until midnight this Sunday, August 6, to put our nominations in. You need to go to australianoftheyear.org.au to find out more. If your nominee doesn’t win, at least s/he will know you appreciate their effort, and we will have let Australia know what a great region we live in. Let us know who you nominate. We can put up a ‘Great Australians’ board in our new office in Beerwah. Judy Tomlinson President Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc

Sick of the rubbish
Cramped housing estates?
In the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, we have a lovely lifestyle with plenty of space around us. I cannot understand why the cramped housing estates, unless it is greed related or the council does not care, since they offloaded the certification process to private enterprise. Seems to me that the housing developments in Beerwah are a huge mistake in relation to social planning. I know I was disappointed when I found out how small the ‘Aura’ development lots are and never thought they would inflict this stupidity on the spacious Glass House Mountains urban area. A block of units would have been a more sensible approach. What about the fire danger? Recently we had a major fire next door with a vehicle on their driveway and the heat was intense on our driveway 30 metres away. If our house was as close as these lots the whole block would have gone up. I would like to know what the fire and emergency services view is. With the ridiculous size of the roads, how do emergency services, or even rubbish trucks, navigate such small roads? There is no way you can safely park a car and you get fined if you park on the footpath. I made a mistake and purchased a house in an estate with narrow roads, it did not last long and never again! Name supplied Beerwah
Goodbye beautiful Hinterland
It is with a tear in the eye that the time has come for us to hit the road again. A few months ago we stumbled upon this hidden gem that is Landsborough. We have been absolutely enchanted by this charming little community and its friendly neighbouring towns of Beerwah, Glass House, Maleny, not to mention the breathtaking natural beauty of the Hinterland region. The area is blessed with the friendly old school Aussie charm of its people. We absolutely loved it here and we will most certainly spread the good word along our travels to anyone who wants to know about the helpful hospitality at Ocean View Caravan Park, the lovely ladies at Down Under Craft always happy to teach you a thing or two about craft, the wonderful safe and happy environment for kids provided by Hatchling House and Sylvie’s Day Care, the awesome well maintained running track around Skippy Park and the outstanding professional and friendly service at Beerwah Print. You are fortunate to have the best and most creative bakery in Australia: Buck's Bakery! We were in there almost every day treating ourselves to the vast array of succulent and innovative creations that it has to offer, all served by the most wonderful happy and smiling staff. Great service! Had the price of houses been more affordable and had there been sustainable work in the area we would have loved to stay. But that’s the way it goes. In the meantime we’d like to thank everyone for your warm and friendly welcome throughout our stay, it’s the people that make the place and you all sure do make this place great! We truly loved it here and we will miss you all. We wish you all the best. Thank you Hinterland region. Serv Family Landsborough

Solar changes align with historical upheaval
Gerry Muller may well believe that changes in solar activity are insignificant (GC&M News, July 12) but I suggest his source of information is flawed. The 20th century alone shows how even moderate variations can be felt in quite dramatic fashion here on Earth. For example, observable increases in solar activity between 1910 and 1939 led to a steady retreat in glaciers worldwide, with generally longer summers and milder winters. The solar minimum from 1940 to 1976 completely reversed this trend, so much so that by the 1960s numerous scientists expressed concern that we may be entering the next major ice age. Interestingly, the Germans invaded Russia in June 1941 and the following winter was the coldest in 240 years, caused by a very quiet Sun. Bad timing for the Nazis but it turned the tide of the war. Many ancient and savvy cultures such as the Egyptians, the Phoenicians and the Mayans understood the profound effects of solar changes. These changes can be observed in tree rings extending back thousands of years. My original letter related to predictions by solar scientists from the National Solar Observatory in the US and elsewhere of a cyclical grand solar minimum to dominate the 21st century that will likely mirror the Maunder Minimum of 1645 to 1715. During that time entire villages in France and Switzerland were destroyed by encroaching glaciers. Most of the vast citrus orchards in China died out from severe cold. Thousands of people perished as a result of widespread famine. The Thames River regularly froze over in England. Indeed it was the coldest period in the past 1,000 years. Yet Gerry states in his letter that "temperatures won't be lowered in any appreciable way", by a grand solar minimum. Direct observations of the Sun, initially by Galileo in the 1640s and extending to the present day, matched against a diversity of historical records, completely refute this claim. War on waste
The discussion in the newspaper about the removal or phasing out of non-recyclable coffee cups from many of the businesses in the GC&M News distribution area is good news. The next step that is being promoted and pushed around the world in western countries right now is the phasing out of the ubiquitous plastic straw. Why? Until the 1960/70s the paper straw was the common drinking method for cups and bottles. About that time the plastic straw was put on the market and it hasn't stopped since. The world, the rivers and oceans, are littered with them – they are unrecyclable and last hundreds of years. In the USA alone, people discard 500 million straws every day, or more than 180 billion a year. That's about 1.4 million kilograms of plastic sent to landfills and into the oceans every day! In Australia the figures would be less. With a population less than one fifteenth of the USA's, I'd say we discard maybe 30 million straws per day. We have twenty two million people – one and half straws per day? According to the anti-straw group the Last Plastic Straw, 80-90% of marine debris is plastic, and as much as 80% of that came from plastics discarded on land. Those straws that do not go to landfill wind up in rivers and creeks and the ocean. Sea animals and fish are found dead with straws in their digestive systems, mistaken for seaweed or food. How about it? Begin to say NO to straws today. Richard Giles Conondale
Is it just me? Or does anyone else think there seems to be litter problem? I am sick of driving around our beautiful area and seeing other people’s rubbish scattered along the side of the road. I collected this rubbish in a few hours in the short distance between the corner of Coonowrin Road and Old Gympie Road up to the Lookout Café at Glass House Mountains. The week before, I collected double that amount of rubbish along the Woodford-Glasshouse Road. It is just disgraceful!
I have rung both the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Regional Councils and was advised that it is the Department of Main Roads who look after these roadside litter and debris complaints. I have since contacted Main Roads and they advised there is a schedule for roadside clean-up. They also explained that if the roadside is looking particularly littered it may mean that they are coming near to the scheduled time for clean-up. They advised that residents are welcome to contact them and let them know of particular areas that may need to be bumped up the schedule, which I have done because the Beerburrum-Woodford Road is a disgrace. I have phoned the Department of National Parks who manage the land surrounding Mt Ngungun and requested that a bin be put in there. They said that a bin has previously been placed there, but was taken away as it caused more issues with people dumping and the bin overflowing, etc. They also mentioned that if you physically see someone littering you can go online and fill out an incident form. It must include their rego number and they will then get a fine (this is not an anonymous incident reporting system). Therese Wilson Glass House Mountains
Care appreciated
My family and I thank the doctors and staff of Maleny Hospital most sincerely for their wonderful professional care of my husband David and support of myself in David’s last days. We thank you for your dedicated and loving care and for making his 10 days of hospitalization as comfortable as possible. The standard of care was way above what I expected and hoped and the warm support for me helped me to cope with the strain of letting him go. We are extremely fortunate to have such a reliable, reputable hospital staffed with such friendly and competent people here in our local area. We shall always be grateful for that. Beauty& Beauty&Wellbeing Wellbeing Pop on the kettle to prevent disease There is now even more reason to enjoy a cup of tea with a new review of existing research showing the humble cuppa can help prevent a number of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. Researchers from Edith Cowan University’s School of Medical and Health Sciences examined more than 100 studies from around the world that have looked at tea consumption. They found that black, white and green tea can reduce the risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. The findings could offer some hope to the more than 65 million people expected to be living with Alzheimer’s disease by 2030. Likewise, some 5.1 million deaths worldwide were attributed to diabetes in 2013, a figure that is growing annually. ECU Centre for Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Care Research Fellow Dr Fernando said the review offered new lines of enquiry for scientists. “There is strong evidence that tea consumption

can lower the levels of beta amyloid b in the brain, the build-up of which can cause Alzheimer’s disease,” she said. “In particular a number of studies have found that the flavonoid Epigallocatechin gallate, which is found in tea, can reduce the levels of beta amyloid b in the brain, which could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease,” she said.

Dying to Know Day
This year we will recognise this day on Tuesday August 8 with an event in Maleny at the Neighbourhood Centre from 12.45pm for 1pm start, till 3pm, and everyone is welcome to come along. This will be a gathering for anyone who would like to come and talk about any aspect of dying and death. A chance for people to come together, to pay respects and remember those we love who have died, by talking about it. Sharing our stories and experiences, stating our own expectations, our wishes and desires and bringing our ideas about how to we might want to make dying and death different in some way. Talking about dying and death is often more about making it better for your loved ones to handle it and to experience a healthier bereavement. For those facing death, talking about it reduces fear, helps with the acceptance and is part of the preparation for a good death. No matter what age we are, fit and healthy or terminally ill, it's a good conversation to have. A family conversation and it can be a community conversation. For those who would like to attend please bring a small plate of food to share for afternoon tea, if you can, and a few gold coins to give as a donation for the venue hire and photocopying handouts you will receive. Bring a photo or memento, a candle or crystal, for a ceremony to honour and think about those who are dead. These can be leaves, flowers, herbs, sawdust, sand, earth or ash, anything organic to make a small mandala on the ground. Not sticks or stones, so it can eventually be mowed. For more info call Veronica Davidson 5494 2838 or 0438 776 836.

Yoga and gastrointestinal health With Maree O’Connor
It was brought to my attention this week that a serious gastro bug is spreading through the schools. For example, in one class alone 10 out of 30 students were at home unwell. Even if you don't have young children in the home you can still be at risk of infection in public places. Whatever your situation – directly or indirectly – you can strengthen your immune system with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Iyengar Yoga offers particular sequences or poses that not only strengthen the immune system but also relieve the effects of an infection during recovery. One such classic pose is Setubandha Sarvangasana. “The Sanskrit word setu means ‘bridge’, bandha translates as ‘formation’, and sarvanga means ‘entire body’. In this pose the body arches to take the form of a bridge. “The chinlock in the asana calms the flow of thoughts and soothes the mind. The pose sends a fresh supply of blood to the brain, resting and revitalizing the mind and body.” (The Path to Holistic Health, BKS Iyengar). It is recommended that you practice under the guidance of a fully certified yoga teacher. For more information on the yoga classes, contact Maree from Maleny Yoga Centre on phone 0448 518 734 or email info@ malenyyogacentre.com.

Dine In Take Out with Lea Parkes
C&M Seafoods Quite often this Dine In Take Out write up is written by Sonia Clark, which generally means I get to go and lunch and Sonia does the hard work. However, when I realised this story would be about C&M Seafoods, I kind of figured that it would be a little unfair to send our vegetarian (who doesn’t say no to a sweet treat) reporter out to the job. Fortunately Brownie was happy to volunteer for a lunch that featured not just a Barra Burger and crunchy fresh chips, but also some very tasty homemade prawn cutlets, scallops and calamari! While I would like to say that I went along with all good intentions of only going for the super healthy option of a piece of grilled reef fish, which on Wednesday’s menu was Sweetlip, and a serving of Greek Salad, and while this did make up the main part of my lunch, I did feel compelled to try some of the supersized chips
(which were definitely worth it). We weren’t the only ones dining in on Wednesday. At the table next to us was Ron from Bribie Island and Helen from Beerwah (unfortunately my grasp on technology isn’t what I thought and I couldn’t include the photo I took of them). They reckon that C&M Seafoods is their favourite fish and chip shop around. Ron said it was better than any of the choices on Bribie Island and worth the journey. Helen said she has been coming for years, she is never disappointed with the quality, and she particularly loves the homemade fish patties that Cheryl serves. After working for just over 35 years in the seafood industry, Cheryl definitely knows how to keep her customers happy and, while it is more work, they like to batter and crumb their own products – their prawn cutlets are even made
from a whole prawn (that has been de-veined) with a light homemade crumb (keeping its real prawn flavour). Cheryl even makes their own Seafood Spring Rolls which are made from calamari, fish and prawn meat with Asian Veggies and served with a sweet chilli sauce, and their Barra Spring Rolls are made from Barramundi and Asian Vegetables in a garlic cream sauce. They also stock a great selection of fresh fish and oysters as well as frozen seafood options for people to take home and include in their favourite recipes, including prawn and crab meat, mussels and smoked trout. During winter C&M Seafoods is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am for lunch and closes at 7pm on Wednesday and Sunday and 7.30pm on Thursday to Saturday. Hours are extended as the weather warms up.

Music Today Upcoming music festivals
It is coming to that exciting time of year again for music lovers – the spring music festival season, and two that I will certainly be attending are Maleny Music Festival from September 1 and Neurum Creek Music Festival the following weekend. Maleny is not yet a huge festival, but with three stages, 75 acts and numerous workshops in other venues at the showground, along with a presence in the township (for example a bush dance on the Friday night with the Barleyshakes), it really should be in every local’s diary! The range of musical styles at a folk music festival today goes without saying, but add street entertainment, great food and market stalls, the dance of zumba, yoga and cabaret, storytellers and poets with their “breakfasts and slams” and the humour of music comedy acts right through the festival, and there really is something for everyone at Maleny. I am particularly looking forward to the Country Music feature on the Sunday. Typical of Director Noel though, it is probably not country as you anticipate it with the soaring vocals, searing dobro, stunning harmonies and captivating stage presence of folk/Americana inspired Montgomery Church, the rockabilly of golden-voiced Ian B Macleod, the character of veteran singer songwriter Col Finley, the late 60s Laurel Canyon sound (I’m thinking Crosby, Stills and Nash) with heavenly harmonies, fiddle, accordian and guitar of Tin Star, and the old time country swing of the Long Johns. (Apparently they will have the floorboards stomping, the chaingangs hammering and the doors creaking with their Sousaphone, spittoon and spooky swing!) Neurum Creek is a small festival and the organisers Angie and Don like it that way with just the one big stage and a workshop hut. The audience size is limited by the site to about 700, so it is pretty well always sold out. There is a fantastic range of artists, but two acts that I am especially looking forward to this year are Never the Twain (with its very funny musicians Martin Pearson and John Thompson – these two together are ‘to die for”!), and the ukulele, banjo, guitar, bass, flute, superb vocals and original repertoire of Red Crow. According to devoted followers, it is what goes on around the campfire that is the real attraction of Neurum Creek. Being a “stage junky” I generally miss that part, but a great campfire jam is a treat, so I might just catch a late one or two! Hope to see some of you there. Don’t leave it until it is too late. A common mistake of wealth creation is putting it off. You keep thinking you have ‘no time’ or ‘you are waiting for the market to bottom out’. Life can be very busy and hectic, but isn’t taking control of your financial future important? Property prices increase, building costs increase … how much is procrastination really costing you?

Onions
The subtropics isn’t the most suitable climate for growing hard bulbing onions. Our winters don’t tend to suit traditional onions very well... we just don’t get a long enough period of time with short day lengths, which is what onions need. At best, you’ll have varying degrees of success or just a lot of small sized onions. My choice is to grow mixture of shallots, spring onions, short day onions (like ‘Early Lockyer White’), pickling onions and leeks. Colin Campbell used to say that locally – and as a rough guide – you plant onions on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest day of the year. This is pretty right with bulbing onions, short day onions and pickling onions. Shallots and leeks, I tend to successionally plant all year round as these are what I use as a staple in the kitchen. All alliums – or onion family plants – prefer a well-drained slightly alkaline soil – so mix through some dolomite a month before planting. Don’t dig in fresh manure or chook poo (fresh or pellets) as alliums don’t need high nitrogen. They are generally unsuitable for those gardeners with impatient tendencies, as they’ll take many months from planting to picking. Planting seedlings is the way to go – either but them in punnets or grow them from seed yourself... they actually sprout fairly easily, except in summer when the seedling raising mix gets above 24 degrees. Plant your seedling alliums in rows (20cms apart) with plants at 75mm spacings. I tend to poke a hole and then plant them 2cm deeper than they were growing in the punnet. Don’t worry about them not standing upright, as they’ll self-correct. Alliums don’t like root competition, so weed control is vital. I don’t mulch around my alliums, as I find that it just promotes fungal rot problems as the plant matures – and they seem to do better just surrounded by bare soil. Fertilise with a standard fertiliser which has a good range of trace elements. Give them a light dressing of fertiliser once a month. Keep watering at regular intervals – periods of drying will affect the quality of the final harvest. The most common pests you’ll have to deal with are onion thrips (noticeable by the leaves having white damage flecks), white rot soil disease (makes the bulbs rot), downy mildew (powdery fungus on the leaves) and cutworms (they eat the leaves). Don’t harvest true onions until the tops have shrivelled and fallen over. Leeks, shallots and spring onions can be harvested at any time you think they are big enough to use. Leeks can be harvested by cutting them off 5cm from the ground, using the top section and letting the plant regrow to give you a second leek from the one plant. If you want to try something unusual, you could try perennial leeks, bunching onions or tree onions (or walking onions).

With the recent discovery of red imported fire ants at Beerwah, the commitment by Agriculture ministers from across Australia of a $411.4 million to fund a 10 year plan to eradicate the serious pest is a welcome announcement. Queensland Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Bill Byrne said all ministers at the Agricultural Ministers’ Forum (AGMIN) had agreed it was in the national interest to effectively double the current amount of treatment and surveillance. “As a result of this agreement the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program will receive $38 million a year, adjusted annually for inflation, until 2027,” Minister Byrne said. “The 10-year eradication plan has been approved by AGMIN and will now be implemented as a priority in Queensland. “That plan will include a significantly expanded fire ant treatment program which will commence in September 2017, running through to May 2018,” he said. “The first treatment program will focus on the outer high risk infestation areas such as the Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim local government areas.” Mr Byrne said ministers had agreed it remained in the national interest to eradicate fire ants due to the potential negative impacts these invasive species had on Australia’s economy, environment, public health and lifestyle. “If left uncontrolled, the impacts of fire ants in Australia have been estimated to be between $5.3 billion and $45 billion over 20 to 70 years.” If you see any suspect ants or nests, please take a photograph and submit via the online report form at www.daf.qld.gov.au/fireants or call Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.
Weed File Duranta Duranta erecta This commonly grown shrub in gardens across the area has been identified as a potential environmental weed for bushland areas. Recognisable by its yellow berry fruit, Duranta (also called Golden Dew Drop, Sheena’s Gold and Geisha Girl) it can form dense thickets and is easily spread long distances by birds. A serious problem for home gardeners is that the leaves and berries are deadly, having caused numerous pet deaths and even fatalities of children. Older plants also grow vicious long spines on the branches. All-round, this is not a good plant to have in your garden.

From the churches I was recently speaking to a friend about change. I am sure you have known some changes in your life as have I as we each experience life even from a daily perspective. I commented to my friend that I had met a person I had been in school with and this subject came up in a very different way when this person who was now in his 60s said, “Well, I know I haven’t changed a bit since high school.” I just smiled as I thought (and I told this to my friend), “Wow! Are there no mirrors in your world?” Change often comes to us when we are not watching or even looking for it. A mother knows the changes daily, especially when she is pregnant with her very first child. A couple, even a family, knows change when a newborn comes into the

Margaret Niethe Glasshouse Country Uniting Church household. Grandparents, how many times have you thought or said, “It’s so lovely to have the children visit, but wow, it is oh so lovely when they go home!” I am sure there is no malice in the comment. Life changes, and when we have grandchildren our energy is not the same as when our children were small. All these things are normal life events but so many of us deny the change. To experience change is to experience life in all its fullness – and a man of our history came so that we could live our lives in all its fullness. Knowing Jesus in my life helps me cope with change, the daily ones and the traumatic liferearranging ones. I pray that you will come to know this man of history, this man for today in your life today.

The Queensland Government has introduced new laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs. These new laws relate to dogs and puppies born after May 26, 2017. After this date, it is illegal to sell, supply, give away or advertise a dog or puppy without providing a ‘supply number’, which is used to identify where the animal has originated from. Advertising for the sale, supply or giving away of a dog or puppy born after May 26, 2017 will not be accepted by Glasshouse Country & Maleny News without a supply number. To find out more go to www.daf.qld.gov.au and search for ‘dog breeder regulation’.

Congratulations to Bakani Kombanie, KirraLeigh Crouch and Emily Roach who represented Glasshouse Christian College and Beerwah High School at the U13-15 Queensland State Soccer Championships in Cairns from July 20-23, playing against 20 teams and 320 athletes from throughout Queensland. The boys played strong and hard, with Bakani attacking in offence assisting them to finishing first in their heats heading into the final series and, after six games with only one loss, they were placed 3rd overall. Meanwhile, the girls finished their heats coming fourth, going into the final series as underdogs. They won both their finals but not without dramas. Emily played an integral role in defence. KirraLeigh was taken to Cairns Hospital by ambulance due to a mid-air collision with the keeper, only to be given the all clear before returning to the pitch to play and win in the knock-out semi-final. Unfortunately they finished 2nd overall after playing in the Grand Final against Northern (Qld) only to be defeated by 2 goals to 1 after a goal by Kirra-Leigh was disallowed.

Well my holiday is over already, how fast two weeks flies! Unfortunately no one took the reins, so no report in the past two editions. I'm going to endeavour to cover those weeks this time. The Lochwood Shield series for 2017 has finished with our team in a close third position. The Bray Shield carries on for three more games, after which Kath Smith, who acts as co-ordinator for Pennant series in the Sunshine Coast Region, can concentrate on her own game. Vince Carbery is travelling to Nambour to play in the annual Sugar Festival Doubles competition, and Ken Barker played in the Ena Mountney tournament at Graceville, winning three games and losing three. As this edition is being set up, Ken is playing in the State Division 2 Championship in Toombul. We wish Vince and Ken success. In club games, Kath 21 beat Sarah Widin 21-9 and Vince had a victory over Helen Andrews and Sally Adams 16-13. On Thursday two visitors from the Hornby Croquet Club in Christchurch, Neil Williams and Eric Ogier, dropped in and played a couple of games of golf croquet with Kath and Vince. Eric and Vince downed Kath and Neil in both games 7-5 and 7-1. We offer coaching on Saturday morning on our lawns in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road, with all equipment provided by the club. For information about joining, hiring, coaching or playing times, ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
Super Strawberry Round 4
Super Strawberry Crisis
Round 4 of the Super Strawberry Competition produced NO ENTRIES! Growers, you are missing out on the opportunity to win the weekly prize of a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel. We are seeing (and tasting) beautiful strawberries this season, but we hear that they are not ready yet, or too small for the competition. Or the weather is against us… Let’s see a more imaginative approach in Round 5, and remember this competition is not just for the big strawberry farms – you may have the winning entry in your garden, or even on a potted strawberry plant. And you are looking for the unusual, not just the biggest fruit. Round 5 closes at 4pm on Friday August 4, but you can bring entries to the Coochin Creek Co-op at any time during the week. The overall winners will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 26 – Glasshouse Country community fund-raiser for Cancer Council Queensland.
Social badminton anyone? Nambour Badminton Club is seeking new players, aged 18 to 80, and any ability to play on Tuesday mornings from 9am till about 11.30am. Your first time will cost you $5. After that it is $6 members, $8 non-members. There are also sessions for juniors (8 to 18) on Fridays from 4.30pm to 6pm, during school term time and school children are welcome on Tuesday mornings in school holidays. Remember to wear comfortable sports clothes and non-marking shoes. Morning tea provided. Equipment is provided if you don’t have your own racquets and shuttles. There is plenty of off-street parking. Enter beside the bus shelter opposite Queensland Transport on Coronation Avenue in Nambour. Just turn up for some fun and exercise.

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced Saturday, July 28: Men’s 1st Division Pennant had a bye. Men’s Pennant 4th Division Pennant away to Bongaree. A great win for Glasshouse who were too strong, winning 49 to 26. Next week’s game will be a tough one, home to Woodford. It’s only just over a month to our AGM on Saturday, September 2. Time for members to have a think and consider putting their hand up to help out. All board positions will be declared vacant. Our Spring Carnival will be held on October 14 and 15, Mixed Fours with a $55 entry fee each. It should be another great carnival. Start putting your sides together now. So far we have five teams. Cost will be $12 and will include hot nibbles after the game. Sunday coaching 10.30am to noon each week. All welcome.

Well, another week of great bowling weather which commenced with a well-supported mixed jackpot pairs on Monday. Mapleton scooped the rink with winners Ed Hallow and Don Stewart and second to Brian Read and Ray Burge. The jackpot of $75 was won by Sandra Kapatanic and Margaret Ginns. Sandra was also lucky winning the raffle as were Leigh Irwin and Bill Edwards. Tuesday club jackpot game was won by Sandra Kapatanic, Jim King and Joe Walters/Doug McGufficke. The jackpot of $114 was not won – worthwhile joining in this week to have a chance at the big dollars! Wednesday night social bowls was again well patronised on a ‘balmy’ winter evening. A touch of classical music supported the Outlaws and Mavericks to wins. Ray Patlin won the wine draw and Scott Alexander the money board. Friday afternoon scroungers winners were Tony Snell, Ray Pantlin, Margaret Ginns and Scott Alexander. Money board was again won by Joe Walters and the club draw for Top of the Range Meats was won by Don Ginns. It was very satisfying to see most greens full on Saturday with a good turnout for social bowls and a group of about 15 celebrating a 30th birthday with bowls. Everyone is welcome to join in for barefoot social bowls Wednesday night 6pm for a 6.30 start – just $13 for hamburger and game – bowls supplied, or on Saturday afternoon at 1pm for $5 for non-members – bowls supplied. No experience is necessary, guaranteed a warm welcome and enjoyable time.

The outcome of the game between Witta Wagtails and Maroochydore TTs did not mirror the closeness of the competition. Maroochydore TTs were the deserved winners of the day. Thank you to Eunice, Claire, Gerry and Sonia. The Wildcats team of Stacey, Anne, Sonia and Annie lost to Coolum 44-32 games after a strong battle from both teams. Thanks to Sonia for filling in. Whistlers enjoyed a lovely day of winter tennis at Witta on Friday. Playing the top team with regular players absent, it was going to be a challenge. Very close going into the last 2 sets - and the results - a very happy 4 sets all, 38 games each. Thank you to Brenda, Donna, Maree and much appreciated help from Paula. The Wonders most recent outing was against Ballinger who had beaten them 7 sets to 5 in their first round encounter. On this occasion it was the Wonders turn to take the day, turning the tables and having a 7/5 win, the final result in doubt until the last set was played on the day. The Wonder Women were the stars on the day winning their own doubles and combining to take virtually all the mixed sets, but it was only due to a stirring match effort featuring Jani and Craig Hooper that finally helped the Wonders stagger over the line on the day. The win puts the Wonders into 3rd place on the ladder with a bit of work still to do to make the Finals. Stars on the day were Jane and Caroline and thanks to Craig and Marco for stepping in to plug the holes. Don’t forget the AGM is this Saturday at 1pm. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www. wittatennis.com.au.

It has been a good last couple of weeks for the club with our Under 20 team winning the Nick Meredith Under 20s Cup, beating Caloundra at Caloundra 102, which was an outstanding performance. The team consisted of some of our 1st and reserves players and some of our Under 17s. Our Premier Men’s team won 4-1 away to Maroochydore to keep them 4th on the ladder, all but confirming they will play in the finals, two goals from Cam Nairn and 1 each from Zac Carew and Jeremy Lynch securing the points. Our female football at the club is looking very strong as well, our Senior Women’s team went from 5th to 2nd on the ladder. Following a 4-0 home win against Buderim Orange, our Under 16 Girls currently sit 3rd on the ladder and our Under 12 Girls also sit 3rd after a 3-0 win away to Woombye.

It will be important to note that this month there are two big eclipses that have great influences over your affairs. Give more time to your financial management and avoid luxury spending. Build up your reserves and keep an eye on the financial paper work. The Lunar Eclipse helps your assets.
Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!” Contributed by George Frank, Beerwah

LEO July 23 - August 22 This month is one of your best all year because of two major eclipses that put you on the grandstand like a rock star! Mars is on fire in your bold sign, making you a confident leader. You will have a big desire to act and get things done. Your biggest gift over the next six months will be your organisational skills. Present yourself with a new appearance. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 This weekend you will be up with the early birds as the weekend draws towards the Full Moon eclipse in Aquarius. That will be a signal to make sure you have things balanced between work duties and private time at home to rest and recharge. The month begins with the eclipse directing your career with relationships, co-workers and friends. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 As a result of a lot of planetary energy in the sign of Leo accompanied by a bold planet, namely Mars, there is no doubt that this month is going to give your life some lively action. There are activities with large groups, income from business and your hopes and wishes working for a cause in your community. This Full Moon Eclipse has success potential. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 There could be a big opportunity available to you under two great eclipses during this month. It does require you, however, not to push things too hard as it will create problems. Make sure you talk over financial problems with a colleague to find a joint approach. The first eclipse arises this weekend and puts you into an urgent situation at home.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 This is a wonderful month for your sign, as there are two big eclipses occurring, creating the potential for a big sudden change. There may even be a call from an old friend, or a loved one across the street or across the state. You will feel that you will be on your way to help them. The planets are good for putting your best plans to work concerning money. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Whilst there are two eclipses and planets that are turning around, the month supplies small details to the larger picture. Any changes can be accomplished through purposeful action. Money matters may pull you into sudden activities requiring immediate attention. The planets prefer flexibility. That will become your best asset to overcome obstacles. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This month is primarily about relationships over the first three weeks with the influence of action-orientated planet Mars, followed up later in the month by lovely Venus. Eclipses help you with your personality and partnerships. Many talented and caring associates are drawn to you. The eclipse has a six month impact with the best relationships. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You may not have a clear sense of direction, as this month will see the planet Mercury reversing its course. That is called a ‘retrograde’ so the mind becomes a bit more confused and you may lack confidence. The Full Moon eclipse in Aquarius just after the weekend may make you sad about a friend’s affair. Get some privacy and rest now.

Kid vs barber A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it you.” The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!”
