Hi Everyone... Well, no surprises for guessing what might be featured in this week’s edition – yes, Anzac Day is on the front cover, and on quite a few pages inside. Each year there are so many locals involved in Anzac Day activities, whether that be at the local schools or the many local services and marches, and once again we have included just some of the images from across the day. You will also have noticed that I have a slightly different headshot image above. Last week we were visited by a talented local who had made up these lovely garlands of crochet poppies, which we strung up on our favourite tree outside the office. As the Glass House Mountains Anzac Day March travels down Coonowrin Road, right past our office, we felt it was rather fitting to have them lining the path. There is something very special about being able to sit out on your front fence and wave and smile as those participating proudly march past and pause and remember what the day is all about. Lest we forget.

Local News Young Jack has wheels
A very special community fundraiser was held recently at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club for 18-month-old local Jackson Hislop. The generosity of the local community was clear with over 150 people coming along on the night to help raise funds to purchase a much-needed transport wheelchair van. Thanks to proceeds raised on the night, along with over $4,500 from ‘A Wheelchair Van for Captain Jack’ GoFundMe page, and an incredible donation of $12,000 from the ‘Shine for Thomas Foundation’, the van has now been purchased. Shona from Mooloolah Meats was one of the event organisers and knew in advance of the plans of the Olive family from the ‘Shine for Thomas Foundation’ to bequest their generous donation, allowing her to tee up delivery of the specially-designed van. “It was a fantastic night, the Country Club put on some awesome food and provided a great event filled with music and dancing. The local businesses and community groups of ‘Moo Town’, such as Mooloolah Valley Lions Club, generously threw their support behind the evening.

Local women lead the way
Maleny Guide Hut restored to original glory
Christene Brunton, Jan English and Valerie Jones lead the march This year the Women Veterans Network Australia, through their campaign ‘By the Left’, encouraged women veterans to march together all over the country on Anzac Day to raise awareness of their contribution to the Australian Defence Force. Their message was about reminding women who are currently serving or have served, to wear their medals, march and be proud. The ‘By the Left’ Facebook page announced that across the country there were 38 marches on Anzac Day that were led by young veterans or servicewomen's groups including two of our local marches at Beerwah and Maleny.
By Sonia Clark The newly restored Maleny Guide Hut on Cedar Street was re-opened last weekend to an appreciative gathering of dignitaries and community members including many past guides and leaders. Following a successful grant application and fund-raising efforts of around $100,000, work on the restoration of the 53-year-old building commenced at the beginning of 2017. The hut re-opening celebrations were timed specially to coincide with the original week that the hut opened on April 24, 1953. The first President of the Maleny Girl Guides Local Association, Margaret Chillcott, officially opened the restored building, and in attendance were many original guide members. The current President of the Maleny Girl Guide Support Team, Leanne Large, explained that Margaret and her supporters raised the money to build the original hut by hosting a canteen at the weekly Maleny Cattle Yards sales (located where Woolworths is now). After a number of years of planning and fundraising and strong support from the local community, Leanne is thrilled that the hut has now re-opened and the group has been able to return home the building. The guides have had wonderful community support in completing their venture including an amazing effort from local builder Ed Lawley
Women leading the Beerwah Anzac parade
Margaret Chillcott cuts the ribbon who donated his time, along with the assistance of members of the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club who volunteered 105 hours of painting to get the hall looking ship shape. Those involved in the project are really proud that the beautifully-done restoration allowed the hut to be restored to its original design. With so much effort put into the building of the original hut, the current custodians were adamant that it be restored to its original glory. “The original hut was all built with locally supplied timber from local families and there is a lot of historical value in maintaining the hut,” Leanne said.

Steve's Hollywood star Beerwah’s very own Steve Irwin’s contribution to the film and television industry through his wildlife documentaries was recognised last week with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin were in Hollywood at the unveiling, along with some of their closest friends and family from around the world. Steve’s star is part of a long list of influential stars, 2,635 of them to be exact. However, Steve’s is the only posthumous star being awarded in 2018. Terri Irwin said Steve would have been chuffed at the award. “Steve always said that he hoped his message of conservation would live on forever,” Terri said. “It means the world to us that Steve’s memory will live on in so many ways, including now on the internationally recognised Hollywood Walk of Fame. “We’re thrilled that so many people have joined us today in khaki to celebrate. It’s wonderful that there are lots of people back home on the Sunshine Coast celebrating too.” To receive a Hollywood Star, applications, supporting documentation, letters and supporters are required. Russell Crowe and Visit Sunshine Coast were the key supporters of Steve’s star.
Questions answered on Maleny park The plans for a heritage, play and picnic park on a section of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club’s (MDSRC) leasehold land in the Maleny Community Precinct continue to raise questions. To help gain some clarity, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News put a series of questions to Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay. Are the MDSRC able to make decisions about usage of the leased land (if it fits within the masterplan outcomes) without consultation with the wider community? If a proposal is consistent with the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan, and council has opportunity to formally assess it, progressing the proposal would not require community consultation. I am aware, however, that the MDSRC have and will continue to engage with the broader community of Maleny. This is highlighted by the number of service clubs that have committed considerable financial resources and time to progress this to date. Did MDSRC consult with Council on their ‘Pioneer Park’ plans before their announcement? Representatives from MDSRC clearly articulated to me that during the Master Plan of their lease a “multi-use community space” would be considered in this area. While officers have reviewed a highly conceptual design, no specific details for the park were included, only the location of the proposal. This would be the next stage of the process for the club and council.
Does Council agree with the MDSRC’s proposal that the land is suitable for a park including picnicking and a playground? Council officers agree that community leased land should be available for broad community uses so long as it is in accordance with the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan. As a community precinct this meets the community expectations. Would Council staff be involved with the final design of ‘Pioneer Park’? Will MDSRC need Council’s approval on the design and infrastructure, or under the leasehold agreement can MDSRC go ahead without Council’s approval? Yes, involvement and approval is required from council. Does Council already have short-term plans and a budget allocation for the construction of car parking in this location? Council has a detailed design for a car park in this vicinity. The location of the proposed Indoor Aquatic Centre will need to be considered as we move forward. We need to ensure that the parking will provide for a wide range of community uses, including walking and recreation. Does the MDRSC – as a leaseholder – have to meet all the same standards for the planning and construction of a community park and playground which is required of Council? In

particular, what are the requirements for MDRSC to provide all abilities access to the park and its facilities? Yes, all applications need to align to council’s endorsed Landscape Infrastructure Manual (LIM). Once the park has been completed has Council agreed to take over the control and maintenance of the park? The maintenance and control of the land will remain the responsibility of the leaseholder. Should the club wish to change these arrangements in the future, the lease agreement would need to be reassessed. Does Council have plans to incorporate a district level park within the Maleny Community Precinct in the near future? Where will it be located and what is the timeframe? A future District Recreation Park is proposed in the Maleny Community Precinct in accordance with the endorsed Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan. Timeframes for the establishment of the District Park are dependent on Unitywater Lease arrangements and further detailed site planning. The Maleny Sport and Recreation Master Plan 2016 – 2013 identifies the creation of a ‘recreation node’ (physically identified in the document as being located on the north-western or opposite side of Parkland Drive from the Beersheba Museum) incorporating ‘dog-off-leash area, playground, picnic shelters, open space’ in the short-term and costing $215,000. Does

Please call... the MDSRC Pioneer Park plans form part of this planned action item? If not, where on the Precinct is this ‘recreation node’ planned? It is too premature at this stage to determine the location of the ‘recreation node’ identified within the Maleny Sport and Recreation Master Plan. The greater part of the Maleny Precinct is available for the community to enjoy today. I am very keen to work with the community to develop these areas further in the future when all leases are in place while also recognising the preservation of suitable land for the Maleny Indoor Aquatic Centre. In the area informally known as ‘Platypus Bend’ where the MDRSC have identified the usage as being for sporting fields, does Council consider that the provision of picnicking and playground facilities would be encompassed as part of the overall facilities mix for that area? The design plan identifies the area informally known as ‘Platypus Bend’ as being a suitable space for an informal multi-use open recreation area.

Community News Competitive trail ride on Roys Road
Fine weather at last means that the Sunshine Coast Area Trail and Endurance Riders Club (SCATER) can hold the first Competitive Trail Ride (CTR) for year. Horse riders looking to test their horse-riding skills whilst enjoying a pleasant ride in the forestry are encouraged to enter. This ride will be a great opportunity for experienced and new riders to the sport of CTRs to experience judge points or obstacles out on the track and keep an eye on the time as they ride through the forestry and back to the ride base. This will be a one-day ride with limited camping available so riders will need to arrive early to vet in their horses from 6.30am and to attend the compulsory Ride Briefing at 7.45am. The track is 18 kilometres long with a shorter training ride of 10 kilometres, so no excuses for not giving this CTR a go. There will be Open, Novice, Junior, Teams and Training divisions and boots or shoes are recommended for horses if they are not seasoned barefooters. The event will cost $30 for members and $50 for non-members which includes insurance. A lunch of fruit platters, bread rolls, cold meat and salad will be provided. You will need to bring: water for yourself and your horse, feed for your horse, a bag for manure removal, chair and a coffee cup. Boots and helmet are essential. Nominations close Wednesday May 2 with nomination forms available at www.scater. com.au. Any questions, please contact Carmel Penny on 0412 009 800 or 5476 5182.
Update on Landsborough unit development The major development of 23 units and 10 ‘rooming accommodation’ rooms on the 4,703 sq.m block at 37 Maleny Street, Landsborough seems to have hit a snag. As previously reported in GC&M News (April 18), the material change of use development application would see a considerable shift in the landscape of Landsborough, with three double storey developments squeezed onto the block. However, Sunshine Coast Council has notified the developer – GSG Contracting Pty Ltd – in a letter dated April 20, 2018 that the application is not properly made, due to them not paying the $26,750 application fee when lodging the application. Consequently, they have 20 business days to pay the amount in full, otherwise the application will be deemed to not have been properly made and be rejected. The deadline for payment will be May 22.
A mighty force targets Adani
After a successful screening of the new documentary, ‘#StopAdani: A Mighty Force’, in Mudjimba in March, the film will be screened at Maleny on Wednesday May 23, from 6pm-8pm at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street. A spokesperson for the #StopAdani campaign said: “The film tells the story of the unstoppable movement to stop Adani and what we need to do to stop one of the world’s biggest coal mines from being built near the Great Barrier Reef. “Will you come and see just how many people are part of this urgent fight to #StopAdani? “Confirmed speakers on the night are Ben Pennings from Galilee Blockade, Julie Devine from Lock The Gate Alliance and Direct Action Activist John Brinnand. “The evening is a fundraiser to support the campaign. All proceeds will go towards grassroots efforts to #StopAdani on the ground and here on the Sunshine Coast.” Entry is by $5 donation (or more). Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be available on the night. You can prebook your ticket and make a donation via the Stop Adani Sunshine Coast Facebook page.

Maleny locals whip up support for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Ladies from the Maleny Catholic Church have been switching on the kettle and hosting a morning tea for charity for close to a decade. Once again this year they will host an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea for a cause and pour a cuppa for around 105 guests on Friday May 18 from 9.30am at the Maleny Catholic Church. Locals are invited to attend for a morning of tasty treats, tea and fundraising. Event organiser Moya Pullinger said hosting a morning tea was a cause close to the heart and invited locals to attend. “Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, whether it be themselves, family or friends,” Ms Pullinger said. “Research is very important because it can prevent the disease.” The morning tea is open to everyone in the community, not just those in the Church, and entry is $10 per person. “What makes our event special is that the morning tea is supplied and arranged by the ladies of the Catholic parish,” Ms Pullinger said. “They donate slices, cakes and make sandwiches to share and we have a continuous raffle of 30 prizes running that morning as well. Tickets are two for $1 and it is the best way to fundraise. “The food is prepared by us, the decorations are hung by us and the prizes are donated from the parish which means the money raised is donated directly to Cancer Council Queensland.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
“Over the decade we have raised approximately $15,000 – it is a lot of work but it’s all powered by volunteers and donations. “This year the theme will be a daffodil theme to raise awareness for all cancers,” she said. The official day to host is Thursday May 24, however anyone can host a morning tea anytime throughout April, May or June. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan called on locals to tea-up for the cause, and fill their cups with hope to support a cancer free future: “We’re calling on people to get involved by hosting or attending an event. Simply gather your closest friends and family, set a date, raise funds, and enjoy a cuppa together.” To host an event, or donate, visit biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85. All hosts will receive a free host kit.

The Glasshouse Country Anglican Church has been collecting donated nonperishable food items for the Morris House food bank program since 2010. Through the generosity of Beerwah IGA, the Anglican Church has had a collection bin inside the store for about a year which, according to Church spokesperson Ted Prickett, has been very successful. “The Beerwah community have been very generous and have donated a considerable amount of food into the Beerwah IGA collection bin, he said. “All the donations are distributed as emergency food relief to local families – a program run through Morris House at Landsborough. “This food relief makes a great deal of difference to these local families and so Beerwah IGA is to be congratulated for their open-heartedness. To show their thanks, Anglican Church representative Eunice Prickett last week presented store manager Rose Moana from Beerwah IGA with a Morris House certificate of appreciation for their support. “If people would like to make donations of non-perishable goods for Morris House to distribute, they can be dropped in the smaller green bin near the checkouts in the Beerwah IGA, explained Ted. “Or they can also be donated through the Seventhday Adventist Church in Landsborough, who have been similarly working hard to collect food donations for ager Eunice Prickett thanks store man Morris House. Rose Moana

Early last year, at age 91, Maleny’s John Stevenson, Australia’s oldest Town Crier, reluctantly decided to hang up his bell and finally retire from the voluntary role he had been doing for more than 25 years. While John was still keen to continue, sadly his health prevented him from completing his regular activities in Maleny, which included leading the Anzac Day March down Maple Street. John’s son Mike said that Anzac Day had always been a special event for John, who served in the British Army, and for Mike, who has been a paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service for 35 years, and John’s grandson Jay, who is currently in the Navy and has received the Order of Australia for his Naval service.
This year John had been determined to attend the Anzac Day service at the Maleny RSL, however his health, which had been slowly deteriorating, would not allow it. Having been transferred to the Maleny Memorial Soldiers Hospital early last Tuesday, John was, however, pleased to be able to attend the service at the hospital, where he proudly wore his medals and was surrounded by his family. Grandson Jay and his wife Lisa and their children travelled from Canberra to share in the day with the family. Mike said that while the past week has been a challenging time for the family, they chose to focus on the joy of sharing this important occasion, which meant so much to John.

Out & About Audience moved by speech at Zonta event
Words and photos by Judith Ross-Smith Fiona McKeague recently inspired Zonta’s guests at a morning tea fundraiser with a talk about her experiences at the Hamlin Fistula Centre in Addis Ababa. This biennial event for Zonta, held at Maleny Uniting Church Hall, has raised thousands of dollars for Hamlin Fistula, as well as brought the work done by this organisation to public attention in Maleny. Zonta also displayed the original Howard Steer painting the club is raffling to raise funds for their scholarship fund for local young women.

Thanks from the Chappy
It was an early start for the Beerwah High School hospitality students who were in the school’s kitchens by 6am to prepare for the Chaplaincy Sponsors Appreciation Breakfast last week. For more than a decade Mike Turner has been the School Chappy at Beerwah High, and at last week’s breakfast two brave students took to the floor to share their personal experience and formally acknowledge the work Mike has done in supporting them during their time at the school. Because the community understands the importance of the role a school chaplain plays and the difference they can make to the many students, there are many generous supporters in our community and the breakfast was an opportunity for both Mike and the Chaplaincy Committee to say thanks. Have you considered cosmetic tattooing? Operating out of Sunshine Coast Skin Therapies alongside Sharon, Beck from The Cosmetic Tattoo Company is offering specialised cosmetic services right here in Landsborough. Qualified as a Makeup Artist, Beauty Therapist, Hairdresser and Cosmetic Tattooist, Beck’s broad range of industry knowledge allows her to create specialised looks to suit each client. Cosmetic Tattooing is becoming more popular among women of all ages. The procedures are helpful for anyone who suffers from: • over-plucked eyebrows • very fair eyebrows • uneven eyebrows • poor eyesight, who finds it difficult to put on makeup • women who want to wear eyeliner but don’t know / can’t put it on • receding lip lines that seem to be losing colour around edges
• scars in their eyebrows or on their lips. “Most women are unaware that Cosmetic Tattooing has advanced so much since it was first introduced,” says Beck. “A lot of women I consult with have fears of looking too harsh or even frightening if they undergo the procedure because of what they have heard or seen from other sources in previous years, and this is just not the case.” One of the biggest advancements in Cosmetic Tattooing is the introduction of Microblading or Feather Touch Brows. “This is our most popular technique because it mimics the look of the natural eyebrow by tattooing on individual lines instead of a block shape.” Beck offers free consultations where she goes over how the procedure works, what shapes and colours would best suit your face, and what you can expect during and after the procedure.
“No two people are the same, and I like to ensure my clients will always leave with something that is age appropriate and stunning,” explains Beck. In recent months Beck has started her campaign called The Areola Tattoo Project, where $2.00 from every procedure performed at the clinic is donated to provide free areola tattooing to breast cancer patients. If you would like to find out more please visit the website www.thecosmetictattoocompany.com, or call the salon on 0409 961 924 to book your free consultation.
Offering sophisticated face and body treatments catering to all needs.
WINTER IS COMING...TIME TO PEEL!!! What is a glycolic peel? A glycolic peel is the most widely used resurfacing peel agent to treat ageing, thickening, acne scaring, and stimulation of collagen and overall regeneration of new skin cells. The glycolic acid dissolves the “glue” that holds the skin cells together.
Who can have a peel? Anyone from the age of 13 and upwards are suitable.
Does it hurt? Some clients will experience a prickling / tingling of the skin and some experience nothing, it is very comfortable for most skins with no down time.
Pre and post treatment? Two weeks prior to treatment it is important to keep your face out of the sun by using a SPF 30-50 sunscreen and even more important after treatment. Sun protection is a must to protect the new fresh cells and should be part of your everyday routine.
How much does it cost and how many do I need? Everybody’s needs are different.

You Said It Fed up with local tradespeople
I’m guessing the local tradespeople are so busy they don’t need to get back to you when they say they will! We rang two on Wednesday April 18, one an electrician and the other a company that makes screen doors. It’s now Monday April 23! Neither have rung back even though the electrician said he could maybe do it Friday, but didn’t bother to ring and say he couldn’t! No wonder Beerwah has a lot of vacant shops! This is not the first time this has happened, the service in this area is a nightmare, we support our local businesses but no more. Name supplied Landsborough
Deepest thanks
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people of Maleny for the loving cards, flowers and gifts sent to me to help celebrate my 100th birthday last week. As I am no longer able to correspond with each one of you, please accept these few words, which are sent with my love and deepest thanks. My heart will always remain in Maleny and I cherish the close friendships and fond memories from my time there. Sincerely, Anne Brooker Formerly of Maleny
Thank you
I would like to thank the police and the fire brigade and the lady on the phone for getting us out of the lift at Beerwah station when it was stuck. It was very comforting when the lady kept ringing us up on the lift phone (speaker) to check that we were okay. Julie and Jodie Savage Beerwah
Open letter to Cr Baberowski
With horror I have just read an article in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News about a proposed development in Landsborough on the corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street North (MCU 18/180085). The density of the proposed development apparently meets the current guidelines set out by council which in itself is concerning for the area, however the inclusion in this particular development of 10 rooming accommodation units without any live-in onsite manager is quite frightening. This is not an inner city area where you may expect to see this sort of accommodation, normally in old and run-down buildings in streets best avoided especially after dark. Apparently as it meets guidelines there are no grounds to object. I have never written to anyone in Government before but I feel so strongly against

this development that I had to make you as our elected representative aware. Name supplied Mt Mellum
Development in Landsborough (MCU 18/180085)
Cr Rick needs to come clean on the purpose of this development. Residential housing with this type of shared facilities is only found in caravan parks and older hotels. Cr Rick please disclose where in Landsborough are the other sites that have been identified as suitable for this type of development. This is not a medium density residential development; it is an experimental mass density living arrangement condensed onto 1.184 acres of land. The residents of Landsborough must have input into this development as we are the ones who will have to live with the results, after the developer has left town. Names supplied Landsborough
Re: Landsborough development
The development planned for the corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street in Landsborough (GC&M News, April 18) is set to provoke a flood of objections, already with three letters in your paper, but they will not even be noticed or taken seriously as no objections are able to be lodged on this development. This is very poor PR for council! Today in many pieces of research both here in Australia and overseas, it’s now being recognised that being able to take advantage of greenery, trees and forests is a way of assisting with excessive modern stress and taking care of mental health issues for many people. What is this development doing? In the words of your article, "the development will leave no trees or vegetation with everything being bulldozed". Wow, what a serious consideration these developers are giving to native and natural environments! Knock the lot down mate. No place for trees and plants here! Seventy-five percent of Australians surveyed admitted that stresses in their lives adversely affected their physical health, and 64% said it affected their mental health. The Australian Psychological Society's study on stress in 2014 said, "Almost two in five Australians reported experiencing at least some depression symptoms.” So what does Council allow? Total removal of all vegetation! In today's world this development is a piece of utterly retrograde planning. Richard Giles Conondale

Landsborough development applications
Thanks to the residents who have passionately raised their concerns about developments in our towns. I share their passion and concerns about protecting the character of our townships. First, I need to say that as frustrating as it can be for both residents and councillors themselves, unfortunately councillors are very restrained in what they can say about 'live' development applications. As council is essentially making a legal determination on the application, councillors cannot be seen to pre-judge an application before the officer reports are complete and we have all the information. However, speaking in general terms, it is important to be clear that just because an application is submitted as 'code assessable' it doesn't mean it is automatically approved. Council and other agencies still assess the project and make information requests of the applicant. This can sometimes lead to changes or conditions on the final design, or even to the application being refused if there are sufficient grounds within the planning scheme. To be legally effective, any council decision has to be based on specific planning reasons, not personal or political considerations. Council and I will look very closely at whether proposed developments will lead to excessive density, loss of valuable vegetation, non-worsening water flows and flooding issues, impacts on visual amenity, traffic movements and parking, on-site vehicle movements, etc. Landsborough specifically also has a local area plan that means the assessment staff can consider the town's particular character. It is true that council's powers are somewhat limited when it comes to code assessable developments – the State constrains what councils can do in these cases, in order to attract development to Queensland and to encourage a range of housing types. We also have a short timeframe that can stretch the capacity of our officers. If council takes too long, the application can be automatically approved due to State rules. In the bigger picture, I am working to make sure our planning scheme has more tools to protect the character of our country towns, and that where we do have development in future, we don't get constantly drawn to smaller and smaller lot sizes. I encourage anyone with concerns about development to continue to follow applications online using council’s website and continue to make submissions to our officers. Alternatively contact me or council – any feedback helps to build the case in council for how we should plan for the future. Rick Baberowski, Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council
Costs of purchasing a home You’re trawling real estate sites, and popping into open houses every Saturday. You’ve done your calculations, spoken to your mortgage adviser, and know roughly what you can afford to spend on your home. The advertised price of the property, is only one expense you will have when buying your home. So you don’t get caught unawares, we’ve pulled together the main costs you will need to think about when purchasing your home. Loan deposit; To secure your home. Usually this is 20 per cent of the sale price. As you need to pay the deposit up front, make sure you’ve made arrangements before making an offer. Loan application and establishment fee; When you take out a loan, you will need to pay processing fees. This fee will vary but is usually no more than $750. Mortgage insurance; If you are not paying
18
the full 20 per cent deposit on your home, your lender may require you to pay lender’s mortgage insurance (LMI). Valuation fee; The lender will need to arrange a valuation of the property before settlement. This usually costs around $250. Conveyancing and legal fees: There are intricate legalities to buying a house. Most people opt for hiring a conveyancer or lawyer. Costs will vary, but are often around $1,800. Stamp duty; Stamp duty is the tax you pay for purchasing a property. Stamp duty varies state to state, and there are often exceptions for first home buyers. Mortgage registration; You will also need to pay a fee to the Government to register your mortgage. Again, these fees vary between states, but are less than $200. House inspection reports; Arrange building and pest inspections before you settle on your
property. You need to know there are no hidden problems, like termites, or structural damage. Building and pest inspection costs will vary, but talk to your Adviser or real estate agent about who they can recommend. An inspection can cost around $600. Strata inspection reports; If you are purchasing a unit or apartment, you will need to organise a strata report, which will list current issues with the building, and identify future expenses. Council rates; All property owners need to pay council and water rates. These rates vary between councils, and are calculated on the value of your property. Strata fees; If you are buying a unit, you may be up for ongoing strata fees, which are put towards maintenance costs for the common property, like driveways and foyers. Insurance; The lender will require you
to have home insurance. This needs to be organised before you settle. Insurance rates vary, so shop around. Removalist costs; Once you’ve purchased your property, you will need to move in. Make sure you’ve budgeted for removals costs. Your Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison will help you calculate your costs, so make sure you book an appointment and have a chat.

Anzac Day Ceremonies Every year I attend as many of the Anzac Day services that I can, particularly in Division 1, to honour all of the Australians who have served and often paid the supreme sacrifice in the service of our country. I’d like to thank all of the organisers and volunteers who help make these incredibly important ceremonies happen. Lest We Forget.
Meet and Greet – Glass House Thanks to the residents who braved the wet and dropped by at my recent Meet and Greet session held at Glass House. Topics vary and I am always there to help wherever I can. Pathways, planning and development enquiries, intersection/road safety and access, maintenance of green spaces and council’s process to establish memorials were discussed. Another suggestion was to update the community on the missing pathway link between Glass House and Beerwah. I am committed to delivering this and residents will soon notice the construction of a modest extension to the pathway at Railway Parade which should ultimately keep extending to become the longawaited link between Glass House and Beerwah. Every section helps, but sensibly we still need to wait to see what impacts the duplication of the rail project will have on the land corridor, before we can design and deliver the missing sections. I believe that residents would agree that it makes sense to wait for more certainty to avoid spending ratepayers funds on completing a link that could potentially be ripped up as part of the rail duplication project. In the meantime, we will absolutely keep chipping away at it wherever we can.
Heritage Park playground renewal I am happy to announce that the new playground at Heritage Park in Glass House Mountains has now been completed. The existing footprint and trees posed a challenge in relocating the footprint to be out of any significant tree roots and still provide the necessary natural shade for the park users. The new playground is a great outcome for the local residents who make use of this pocket park with a great rural view and will surely help keep our young ones active through the new playground equipment.
Beerburrum celebrates Happy 100th birthday (1918-2018) to the Beerburrum State School! I was very honoured to give what I hope was a short-ish talk about the genuinely remarkable history of this great village school and its country community. This is a school proud of its achievements and a community very proud of its school. Perhaps the true achievements of the day were the many re-connections and reunions of former students, staff and their families coming back together for a great day. Well done to all who attended and particularly the many organisers. Rick.Baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

State Member for Caloundra Public hospital complaints online form gives residents a stronger voice When you or a loved one are facing serious illness or injury it can be an extremely stressful time for everyone involved. No one wants to face the added stress of delays or other difficulties in accessing medical care at these times. However, my office regularly receives feedback from people regarding their encounters with Queensland Health. As a result I have launched an independent and confidential complaint form webpage for Sunshine Coast residents who have any concerns regarding access to medical care with one of the region’s four public hospitals. Quite often people feel paralysed by the situation to speak up or air their concerns, which is why I have created this webpage. This by no means replaces an official complaints process and I must stress this is not an attempt to undo all the hard work our valuable doctors and nurses do, but it offers people an extra avenue to seek guidance on the process. The webpage offers a place to air concerns that you or a loved one have in relation to accessing medical services in Caloundra, Nambour, Maleny and Sunshine Coast University Public Hospitals. Once a complaint is submitted you will be contacted and offered guidance on the next steps that will need to be taken to resolve the matter. I anticipate that many of these issues, with the complainant’s consent, will need to be passed on the relevant bodies such as the Health Ombudsman, Government Departments or other MPs – but they need to know someone is in their corner. My hope is that more people will speak up and we can help guide them to an outcome that will mean they can move on with their life. Visit: www.markmcardlemp.com/hospital-complaints.
Tackling cyberbullying A Sunshine Coast Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce public forum is planned for Monday May 21 (venue yet to be confirmed) at 6pm. The event is one of 12 forums being held across Queensland so local residents can provide their ideas on how best to tackle cyberbullying as a community. The Taskforce is travelling the State, engaging with children, parents, schools, community members and health and education experts to identify community-driven strategies to reduce cyberbullying. The Taskforce is bipartisan in its approach and includes a Member of Parliament from the Government and the Opposition. If you can’t make it to my event, you can put your ideas on what we could do in writing. Submissions can be emailed to the Taskforce at antibullyingtaskforce@premiers.qld.gov. au or provided on the website at qld.gov.au/ cyberbullyingtaskforce. Following consultation, the Taskforce will recommend an anti-cyberbullying framework to the Premier by August 31, along with suggested community and government actions. The Taskforce website can be found at qld.gov. au/cyberbullyingtaskforce. caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au Search us on Facebook Mark McArdle MP

Living - Arts & Crafts Little treasures on display
Quilt Show is all about the blokes
Bribie Island’s Contemporary Arts Practices (CAPs) group will be displaying their exhibition of ‘almost miniatures’ at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah until Sunday May 27. ‘Little Treasures’ is an exhibition of almost 100 framed works, all 17.5cm x 22.5cm, prepared by 17 of their member artists. CAPs is a group of approximately twenty artists, based at the Bribie Island Community Art Centre, who meet weekly for the wonderful freedom of artistic improvisation and experimentation. This, mixed with a good dose of fun and friendship produces a vibrant and wide range of works. Some sessions are structured but there is no formal tutor. Not for beginners, CAPs showcases a wealth of talent and diversity. Some of our members are qualified teachers/tutors, art prize winners, some have art training, and some are studying. Artists exhibiting in May are: Alex Ferguson, Bev Stegeman, Cheryl Mortimer, Christine Miles, Dawn Farrell, Deidre Nelson, Gail Greening, Helen Hall, John Stegeman, Jude Pullin, Kay Koina, Lorrie Bradford, Sheryl Davies, Stephanie White, Tenika Berghoffer, Tina Galloway and Verity Negus. To book a table at the opening on Friday, May 4 at 6.40pm call Steve on 0431 730 275. For information on hanging an exhibition at Vianta email Michele at reddoorart@bigpond.com or text her at 0412 936 361.
The Mountain Quilters of Peachester are holding their biannual Mega Quilt Show on May 12 and 13 at the Peachester Hall. Each time the group runs the show they choose a theme and this year’s is ‘It’s all about the blokes’. In keeping with this theme, all proceeds from the sale of their raffle will be going to the Princess Alexandra Hospital’s Mandate Clinic. The show attracts traders in the craft trade and bargains can always be had for the craft enthusiast. The traders will be Patchwork Angel, Kimz Sewing Centre, The Big Red Bus from Charters Towers, the Pop Up Bus from Toowoomba (Saturday only), Maleny Magic, Van Cootens from Howard, Bowerbirdy, Michelle Mann of Kiel Mountain Colours, Jennifer Clouston (Crazy Patch), Heidi Ho Patterns, Blockopedia and Expressive Textiles. The Queen of Crazy Patch, Jennifer Clouston, will do trunk shows at 2pm on Saturday and noon on Sunday. Cheryl Houghton (Heidi Ho Patterns) will do demonstrations on both days, and Cindy Houghton of Expressive Textiles will demonstrate Genesis Creations, no mess, non-toxic fabric dyes. The quilts on display are not just pretty adornments for beds but can truly be described as textile art of the most extraordinary kind. There is definitely a wow factor involved even for those who are not craft minded. Art lovers will be well satisfied just spending a couple of hours gazing at the unbelievable quality of the artworks in front of them. So make sure you make time to come and check out the work of these talented locals, open between 9am and 4pm on Saturday and 9am and 3pm on Sunday.
On display in May Bilha Smith Exhibition
At the Beerwah Library this month you can see the artwork of Bilha Smith, multi-talented artist, sculptor, textile worker and story-teller. Bilha has created a unique collection of hand-crafted necklaces made from beads sourced from travels around the world, markets, bazaars and roadside stalls in exotic locations. Each necklace tells a story and contains semiprecious stones, bride price beads and antique beads.

Photographs of Maleny’s first International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia events in 2012 will be shown with the work of Heather Faulkner, in dialogue with some of the people who were at that first event, at Sarah’s Unplugged Café, Maleny from May 17 to June 13. Heather is a photographer who works across diverse media to document and explore the related themes of identity, place and belonging. She has exhibited and published creative works nationally and internationally. She is currently Photography Program Director and Senior Lecturer Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.
Prejudice and Pride on display Maleny IDAHOT is displaying three panels that depict the changes in lives of lesbian, gay and transgender people in Queensland in the Maleny Library throughout May. They describe some ‘romantic friendships’ of the Victorian era, the gay liberation movement, and the more accepting culture of today. These panels are from the Museum of Brisbane’s award-winning exhibition ‘Prejudice and Pride’, courtesy of the Museum of Brisbane and QuAC.

I have been advertising in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for nearly five years now. What I love about the paper is the ease of advertising; changes can be made without a hassle. Businesses have such little time, but it's never a problem for the girls to whip up an ad. What attracted me to the paper was the very friendly, approachable staff. It’s a small local business too, which means you are dealing directly with them. They also keep you up to date on any up and
coming advertising events etc, that your business may be interested in. I find it very cost effective as well. I have advertised elsewhere but have never had the same response rate. I feel without the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News my business would have not grown as quickly as it has. I also love to sit down with a coffee (when I get the chance) and have a read myself. BEERWAH SURGERY
Loose dentures? We have solutions!
6/72-74 Simpson St, Beerwah
with McCloy Dental
Putting up with loose or severely worn dentures will not save money. The loose denture irritates the supporting tissue which in return will destroy the underlying bone, making the denture even looser. This may result in surgery being needed to remove unsupported soft tissue under the denture, and reline costs as well. Leaving dentures until the teeth are badly worn down means a large change will be needed to build the bite back to where it should be. This is often difficult to accommodate, and the new denture is often made to a reduced and incorrect bite. It is better to have updated well fitting dentures that are replaced every five to eight years. Some people do not have enough tissue to provide enough support for good dentures – especially good lower dentures. In these cases using two to six titanium implants to support the denture may provide an ideal solution and solve a life time of loose dentures and let you chew a decent meal with stable teeth that don’t move around. It is important to understand what the options are. McCloy Dental can advise you of the treatment options that are available. Call our friendly staff on 5495 7988 for a consultation.

The 22nd Maleny Wood Expo is on this weekend, May 5, 6 and 7, and the Maleny Showgrounds will be buzzing from 8.30 on Saturday morning. There’s heaps to do at the Expo: check out the Junior Landcare Paddock for kids’ activities including making Mothers’ Day presents, didgeridoos, boomerangs, paper-making, the Cool Stool School and more! Woodcrafting workshops are going on throughout the whole three days of the Wood Expo – head to the SES shed to check out spoon carving, making a milking stool and hand-held carving. In the Main Pavilion there’ll be a chip-carving workshop – check out this fascinating craft and while you’re there, cast your eye over the stunning display of entries in this year’s Sunshine Coast Wootha Prize. The keen woodworker can talk tips, materials and techniques with craftspeople at one of the 100+ stalls. The Barung Landcare Nursery will have a huge range of native plants for sale and there’s Maleny Wood Expo t-shirts at the Barung Info Tent. There’ll be tool demonstrations, chainsaw carving and plenty going on in the streets of Expo. All this plus great live entertainment, fabulous food and informative speakers. Come along and celebrate the beauty of our native timbers in a laid-back, family-friendly country atmosphere. Admission is $15, $12 concession, 16 and under free. Parking is by gold coin donation. See www.malenywoodexpo.com for more details.
Quilts on show
The ladies of the Quota Club of Maleny will hold their annual Quilt Show at the Maleny High School on the weekend of May 5 and 6. Saturday’s hours will be from 9.30am to 4.30pm and Sunday’s will be 9.30am to 4pm. Entry is $5. Stall holders and demonstrators will be able to help visitors with purchases of fabric, machines and notions. Along with all of the many beautiful quilts on display, a special highlight this year we be the involvement of well-known local quilter and author Dianne Johnston who will have a special display of several of her quilts. Dianne will also be talking about her quilts on the Sunday at 11am and again at 1pm. Tickets will be on sale for a major raffle of a beautiful quilt, and refreshments and a light lunch can also be purchased at the venue in Bunya Street, Maleny. If you are a fan of all things quilting you should also make a note in your diary not to miss the bi-annual Mega Quilt Show, organised by the Mountain Quilters Inc, which will be on at the Peachester Community Hall the following weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13. Check out the group's Facebook page to find out more about the event.
Sydney Writers’ Festival to stream live in Maleny
Celebration of Books Maleny and the Maleny Community Centre are bringing the best of the Sydney Writers’ Festival directly to Hinterland audiences this weekend. Known for attracting the finest authors and thinkers, this year’s Sydney Writers’ Festival is no exception. Through the ‘Live & Local’ program, regional centres can now see a range of festival conversations, debates and discussions in real time, via digital live-streaming. Five of these sessions will be screened at the Maleny Community Centre from Friday May 4 to Sunday May 6. Tapping into current issues and extraordinary events, guests across the festival program will examine ‘power’ and the role literature, stories and public conversation play in directing it. On Friday, Gareth Evans discusses his political memoir ‘Incorrigible Optimist’ with Kerry O’Brien. Saturday sees Peter Greste in conversation with Hugh Riminton, and Annabel Crabb hosting BooKwiz with Leigh Sales, Richard Fidler and Julia Zemiro. Then on Sunday afternoon, Louise Adler is joined by author of ‘On Mother’, Sarah Ferguson, and the program is rounded out by Jennifer Byrne and Emily Wilson. Tickets are available online at www.trybooking.com or at the door. Each session is $15 and includes light refreshments, with drinks available to purchase from the bar.

In the Garden Get your Maleny Show entries ready
Tick tock tick tock… time is marching on for you to have your entries ready for this year’s Maleny Show. Anyone can enter their fruit, vegetables, herbs, potted plants, cut flowers or floral art into the show and be in the running for cash prizes and, better still, bragging rights of being the Best in Show. Entries are only $1 each with a maximum of $15 charged, and juniors are free. Entries need to be made using the general entry form which is available in the Maleny Show competitors’ schedule booklet or on their website (www.malenyshowsociety.org.au) under the ‘Links and Forms’ tab. There are lots and lots of categories you can enter – from ‘one maiden hair’ to ‘two heads of lettuce’, ‘three gerberas’, ‘four beetroots’ to ‘five lemons’ or ‘six brown eggs’. Juniors have their own special categories… so check out the competitors’ schedule booklet for more details. In the end it’s all a bit of fun and a way to support our local show (… but really, it’s all about the bragging rights). For more information, visit the Show Society website www.malenyshowsociety.org.au.

The general public are invited to enter a hibiscus bloom from their garden and have the opportunity to win a prize. You will be able to enter your favourite bloom in the ‘Novices Most Spectacular Bloom Competition’. Everybody is welcome to enter just turn up with your bloom before 11am. If you have a problem with your hibiscus and would like some advice or if you simply wish to have a bloom identified, an expert will be on hand to identify your bloom and help you resolve any problems you may be having with your own hibiscus plant, as well as give you tips on fertilizing, pruning and general care. Come along, bring your friends, bring your kids, and cast your eyes on one of nature’s wonders, the ever consuming delight and beauty of the hibiscus bloom. There you will be dazzled by the hundreds of blooms on show, each one like a beauty pageant entrant waiting to be named Grand Champion. For those who would like to have a hibiscus plant of their own, over 300 specially prepared plants will be on sale from 9am. The show is on from 9am to 1.30pm and the hall is located in Blackall Street, Woombye.

Share a favourite spot in your garden to go in the running to win one of five double passes to the ‘Gardening on the Edge’ open garden weekend (June 9 and 10). The passes will give you access to six open gardens over the weekend in and around the Maleny region. Tickets are normally $20 per person to see the whole six gardens. And then there’s the Garden Expo at the Maleny Showgrounds as well (it’s totally free). Just email a photo of your favourite spot in your garden to me at brownie@gcnews.com.au as well as a few words on why it’s your favourite spot, and you’ll go into the draw. Here’s one sent to me by Chloe from Glass House. She says that when they came to live here 18 years ago this photo would have had a driveway coming up from the road. “I was never content with its steepness and I could not make it an attractive part of the garden, so after much thought I decided to remove the driveway and just have a small path instead. It was difficult to establish the garden beside the path after it being compacted from cars but as you can see it has been successful. “There is a small creek that can flow under the bridge when we have heavy rain. The soil that was removed to make the creek was put where the chairs are to create a higher spot to view the mountain and garden. “It's such a delightful spot to relax and watch the mountain change colour at sunset and also a good spot to catch your breath whilst gardening.” Entries close 5pm May 18 and winners will be notified via email.
Plant of the month
M.R.W.L. We care about our environment
Banana Bush
Tabernaemontana pandacaqui Banana Bush is a small shrub growing up to two metres tall. It has attractive glossy dark green foliage that highlights its unique delicate white flowers. The fragrant flowers have a strange pinwheel shape, appearing to revolve in a clockwise direction like plane rotors. This highly prized native then develops fruit which look just like bright little bananas after flowering. The fruit turns yellow when ripe and has rows of bright red fleshy seeds inside. The Banana Bush is a favoured food source for many species of butterfly and moth. This plant is found along the east coast of Queensland and likes well drained soil and partial shade. Like other members of its family (which includes oleander), the whole plant is toxic, as poisonous milky sap is found throughout. Because its fruit looks just like “lolly bananas” care should be taken with children around this plant when fruiting in March to April.

From the churches Was it worth it? We recently commemorated the landing of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli on the 25th April, 1915 as well as remembering all the Australian soldiers killed in military operations. At Gallipoli 8,000, in World War I 60,000 and in World War II 27,073 Australian soldiers perished and many died in recent times. The cost of war is high. Was it worth it? Sacrifice is difficult, hard to bear for those who died in battle, for those left behind and for the countries as they mourn the loss of so many men and women. The Christian community have just commemorated the death and resurrection of Jesus. He came with a message of peace and love but also challenged the malpractices of His time especially by those who were the leaders of the people of Israel. They had made worshipping God hard with many demands. He was also caught in the political web of His day and both the Roman Empire and the Synagogue condemned him to death. A sacrifice that He willingly, but fearfully, made. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

The Fourth Way is an esoteric teaching relating to man’s relation with God. Free introductory talks relating to this will be held at the Beerwah starting May 30, 7pm-9pm weekly. A spokesperson said: “There is a nascent part in every human being that seeks an objective reality, swamped as we may be in the confusion created by the relativity of ideas and the competing ideologies that prevail in modern life. “What if it were possible to delve deeper into the reality of life, to erase some of the illusions and delusions to draw back the veil? Is this not the wish of many of us, often drawn to religion or New Age movements but feeling that somehow all of these teachings miss the mark? “Throughout history, an almost invisible, unbroken thread of truth has existed, first in the east and now in the west – to this very day. “Practitioners of this art and science do not make themselves public and exist within the framework of normal life; yet they are there, and infrequently conduct meetings to introduce these possibilities to those who seek it.” For further information and to register your interest in the free introductory talks please visit researchandstudyintothedevelopmentofman.com. CONDITIONS: To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.
Rev Costa Stathakis Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Martyrs throughout the ages have died for their beliefs… Was it worth it? Closer to home; parents work hard and sacrifice much so that their children are fed, clothed and educated, in medical professions they study for many years and give of themselves to bring relief and healing, law enforcers risk their lives… a mother tends her baby that is ill day and night. Is it worth it? Jesus tells a parable (a short allegorical story to illustrate some truth or principle) of a man who stops on a dangerous road to help a person of another race who was robbed and beaten. He gives his time, effort and finances to help him. As a conclusion Jesus challenges, us to go and do likewise. Sacrifice is needed because we do not live in a perfect world. Sacrifice speaks of love, compassion and a desire for a better world where all people are valued. It is infinitely worth it!

Sport Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Whistlers played against Ballinger Smartinis. It was very windy and everyone struggled, but we had lots of good rallies and deuces at most of the games. We managed to win the right points, that gave us a good win in the end. Score was 48 to 14 games, 8 to 0 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Maree Hooley, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats had another hard game on their hands. It was extremely close all day where games could go either way. Unfortunately it didn’t go the right way. Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby did their best but couldn’t bring the win home. The Wikings travelled up to Gympie to play Gympie Silver. It was toe to toe all the way to the last two sets. Much nail biting, screams, ugghhs and knee slapping prevailed. As the sun descended and the crowds gathered, the Wikings triumphed in a great team performance. Up by 6 games, 6 sets all. Thank you to Gympie Silver for such a great, close and fun afternoon of tennis. Thank you Wikings, King of the Day, No John, who had a blinder and then got blind, Anthony, Kev, we still have to talk, Maree and Stace. The banter to and home was also top notch. Here's to our next game at home, thanks team. On Sunday April 29 the Witta Wompoos hosted the Kawana Koolers. Special thanks go to Denis O'Neill for stepping in for an injured Bob Eather at the last minute. The match was closely fought with the sets being tied at 5 sets each going in the final 2 sets. At the end the sets remained equal with the Koolers getting home 55 games to 52. Congratulations to the Koolers. The Wompoos look forward to trying to reverse the result later in the season. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by David Hayes Monday April 23: What a beautiful day to start our Monday monthly 2 bowls triples. Five rinks which was a great turn out considering so many players were unavailable. The sandwiches went down nicely at lunch then scratchies were handed out for touches in the second game. Winners of the day with two wins + 18 margin were Bruce “T Bone” Angus, Dennis Hume and Barry Kirk. Runners up were the Village People, Brian Saunders, Simon Richter and Vic Muscat with two wins + 13 margin. The lucky draw went to Viv James, Darryl Goschnick and Wendy Platt. Next month will be Monday May 28. Thanks to all players and especially our visitors, Tony Verdonk’s team, George Cox’s team from Woodford and Leeds and his mates from Nambour Heights. Thursday April 26: Social, another great afternoon of bowls. Four teams ended up with two wins but there can only be one winner which was Carolyn Malcomson and Graham Richardson with a huge
+ 39. Runners up were the winners of the losers with Rae Farrell and Di Hume + 17 in the second game narrowly beating Jack Timm and Lindsay Henderson on + 16. Lucky draw went to Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson with the raffle won by Jenny Morris. Saturday April 28: Men’s Club Championship Four’s Final was a 1pm, what a fantastic game, Lindsay Henderson, John Annakin, Rodney Dick and Ron Wilson def David Hayes, Brendan Freshwater, (sub), Bruce Malcomson and Bill Tumbridge 19-11. Another brilliant crowd were there to support the players. It is finally that time of the year with this Thursday the opening of the Men A Grade Singles for 2018. I have a feeling we will have a great turn out along with some tough competition. Both the men and ladies are after players for this year’s pennant. Place your name down at the club. I am unsure about the ladies but the men need at least 28 players as we are in division 2, 4 and 5.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Eleven people from Caloundra turned up to play on Friday. It’s a great session just to have a hit around. Come along next month. Saturday morning practice was well attended with Vince Carbery, Sarah Widin, Bev Sockhill, Ted Gardner, Garth Cottrell, Stuart and Ruby. Vince demonstrated the forward game. Donna Manning and Ken Barker played in the Sunshine Coast Regional Championships on Saturday and Sunday with three games being played each day. They didn’t bring any silverware home, but Donna played beautifully in several games. The tournament was very well organised
by Bribie with a wonderful morning tea and good playing conditions. The weather was great. Garth and Bev honed their skills on Thursday afternoon in beautiful conditions. Donna provided useful advice. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover What a great week of weather and bowls! We had a full schedule of bowls at the club this week with many people back from holidays and wanting to get out and enjoy the beautiful Maleny weather. Thank you all for your efforts. The highlights of the week were the Wednesday night bowls with an amazing crowd of bowlers continuing on the events of Anzac Day that started with Dawn Service and other commemorations at the RSL followed in the evening by barefoot bowls. It was a great day, lovely weather, well done Maleny. The front runners in the Wednesday evening competition, Mobile Kingdom, still remain on maximum points. This week could see the decline as regular Dennis Kyling is away and team work could be lost. Friday Scroungers saw seven hotly contested games on a beautiful afternoon at the club. Some new folks joined the winners’ circle which was a great result for this format of the game. Well done Judith Lees on your win. Curley Petersen got a win which was a great effort considering his handicap. We had some newcomers to Scroungers which was excellent. The feedback was very positive on the afternoon of bowls. Come and try, all welcome. The club championships have started and people are reminded to keep up to date with what is happening via our app. All the best to the bowlers involved and may the weather and the opposition be kind to you. A reminder to all, about the club draws on Friday afternoon after Scroungers. When shopping, support our local sponsors as the best way of helping our club and the local community. Hope to see you all on the green or in the club house supporting your club.

Just for Laughs Children in Church
The Sunday School teacher asks Bobby, "How many women can a man marry?" "Sixteen," the boy responded. His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. "How do you know that?" "Easy," the little boy said. "All you have to do is add it up, like the pastor said, “4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer." She then follows this up with a question to Johnny: "Now, Johnny, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?" "No ma'am," little Johnny replies, “I don't have to. My mom is a good cook." And here is the best one…
Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 You may like those who support your beliefs to come to your side, and if they do, you will have a most agreeable solution. Good options and exciting turns of fate don’t show up until the weekend. You are about to farewell the planet Uranus from being in your sign for the last seven years, moving into Taurus. It brings last minute changes! TAURUS April 21 - May 21 The spotlight is on you! As the planet of sudden changes, namely Uranus, enters Taurus your life will change. There will be new plans and new approaches for the future. Being a sign very sensitive to financial security, all the current planets in Capricorn may give you concern regarding the banking and insurance industries undergoing a sudden shakeup. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 Normally the month of May has romantic and interpersonal relationships. However, these may be troubled a little by massive planetary changes. You need to be running on instinct and intuition. Resources by the weekend may be more controlled, or even more scarce, than you would like. This is not the time for enthusiastic spending. CANCER June 22 - July 22 You might have been struggling on unsound footing because of Uranus being in your challenging sign of Aries for the last seven years. But this month a new phase of life begins. Lightning-bolt Uranus enters Taurus, which is a complementary sign to your own, and this will push you to make changes via exciting friends of social groups. Volatile mix!

A little girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap as he read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek. She was alternately stroking her own cheek, then his again. Finally she spoke up, "Grandpa, did God make you?" "Yes, sweetheart," he answered, "God made me a long time ago." "Oh," she paused, "Grandpa, did God make me too?" "Yes, indeed, honey," he said, "God made you just a little while ago." Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, "God's getting better at it, isn't he?" Contributed by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

LEO July 23 - August 23 You are coming up to a major change in your life which farewells the old one, with one last bold move, change, or decision. Surprises are arriving for you, both positive and challenging. Expect sudden changes and events in your career, business or personal life. Let jolly friends or family in on the fun by the weekend. Set your “happy child” free! VIRGO August 24 - September 23 A positive, generous, expansive, extravagant, forgiving mood imbues your home life. Relationships with the outer business world, on the other hand, are marred by poor communication. Just keep a good eye out on expenses and they won’t career out of control! A Moon/Saturn conjunction gives you a sobering weekend. Trust in familiar friends! LIBRA September 24 - October 23 There will be some fun and games in your relationship sector and you will hear of a sudden announcement since Uranus will make changes to your sector of intimacy and sharing. This includes your joint resources and other people’s finances. Uranus moving into a new seven year transit can bring unexpected events around money, finances or credit. SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 The Merry Month of May will bring a decision about a work or health matter. The planet Uranus is to be ushered in by a New Moon into Taurus giving you an erratic energiser in your relationship house. Some of this will be positive, but mostly it will be a challenging see-saw. Conditions over the weekend may be unpredictable. Just hold your ground.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 The planet Uranus can bring unexpected or unpredictable events in your employment or health. As usual, a friend or nearby relative may need some help or encouragement. However, remember you need your personal support as well. The weekend sees a bright idea from your partner. For yourself just aim for balance and self-control. CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20 The planets are lining up for a Mercury/ Uranus conjunction. This is an excellent month to express yourself! The planet Uranus moves into your sector of romance and love affairs. Also it’s a good month for planning for children. In fact this month is probably the time that you see a new broom sweeping through old affairs and bringing new groups and associations. AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19 You may experience unexpected moves, or sudden changes, regarding emotional or financial security. In fact there may be startling realizations about family history. Good friends may be a lively factor in this week’s activities. Time may be spent talking or socialising with an enthusiastic sibling. Organise jobs to do to finalise home repairs. PISCES February 20 - March 20 There is an unpredictable time coming up over the next ten days due to a conjunction of planets. This means you may experience shifts in your thinking or attitudes. So roll with all changes instinctively, and be ready to make improvements. All this will happen in your everyday environment, so you are ready to tackle a project or promote an innovative idea.
