Hi Everyone As you all know we go to print on a Monday which means that by the time you read the paper the Melbourne Cup will be well and truly over for another year – so sadly we are not able to bring you any of the local glamour from the celebrations on the day. Well at least with the wonders of modern ‘social media’ you won’t have to wait until next week to check out some of the fashions as you can see them on our facebook page. So if you want to see just how great you and the other lovely ladies (and some of the fellas) scrubbed up on the day check out www.facebook. com/glasshousecountrynews We will also make sure we include plenty of great photos in next week’s edition as well – for those of you who have not yet embraced the world of facebook.

So now with Melbourne Cup out of the way it is just full steam ahead until Christmas – with only 54 sleeps to go until Santa arrives, there will be plenty of Christmas frivolity underway over the next few weeks. And for those of you that make sure your house is the centre of your celebrations, you now only have a few weeks for getting the lights draped over the house and gardens. We will once again be having our Christmas Light competition so look out in next week’s edition for an entry form! Regards,

Our local macadamia growers will be under the spotlight when more than 200 of the country’s key industry players descend on the Sunshine Coast next week for its annual conference.

Elimbah’s Mike Cooper, Beerwah’s Peter Boyle and Glass House Mountain’s Gowen family, considered some of the region’s most innovative growers, will host tours of their farms as part of the conference. Jolyon Burnett, chief executive officer of the Australian Macadamia Society said it was fitting the conference was being held on the Sunshine Coast, where the macadamia industry is a major economic contributor. There are close to 300,000 macadamia trees planted in the Sunshine Coast hinterland (mainly Glass House Mountains) with the industry contributing more than $20 million to the Sunshine Coast region. The conference will bring together the diverse range of people and businesses that make up the Australian macadamia industry including macadamia growers, marketers, processors, researchers and investors. “Australia already leads the world macadamia industry in research and development, farming practices and commitment to clean, green

Detective Senior Constable Rod Shelton opened his ‘Identity Theft’ talk at Beerwah Library last week saying by the time we left he would have scared the hell out of us – and he was right. Luckily the informative presentation, which at times was shocking, was also interspersed with plenty of humour. Detective Shelton has been with the Queensland Police Service for 17 years, nine of which was with the fraud squad. His presentation covered topics such as what identity theft is, how false identities are obtained, scams used to get identities, what to do if you are a victim, and much more. The statistics are staggering. In 2008, 4.4 million Australians (26 per cent of the community) have been affected or were victims, with the cost to the community $4 billion. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the world, with crime gangs making more money from it than the drug trade, and more criminals switching to it each year. Surprisingly Detective Shelton said the loss of money is the least of your worries; it’s the theft of your identity that is the main concern. He explained one of the issues is that if a crime is committed in your name you will be arrested and the hard part is proving it wasn’t you. Ways to protect your identity include to lock all personal documents in a safe, only carry essential personal information, do not store personal details on mobile phones or wireless devices, don’t give personal information over the phone from an unsolicited phone call (no matter where they say they are from), destroy all old documentation before throwing it out and more. It is also important to protect your financial information and information stored on your computer. If you suspect you have been the victim of identity theft you should immediately inform the police. “There’s so much money to be made that the criminals are a step ahead of us; basically they come up with a new system and we have to react to that. It’s going to be very, very hard to predict what’s going to happen, what the criminals come up with, but we keep trying to close these things down as they happen,” he said. Detective Shelton spoke to a packed room which included Elizabeth Noble from Beerwah.

Elizabeth Noble

“I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. He was very informative with a tremendous sense of humour thrown in to lighten all the miseries he was telling us about. I’m personally not worried about identity theft because I feel I’ve got everything in place for my protection, but I am very concerned for my grandchildren and people who go on Facebook,” she said. Helen Eddie from Peachester said, “I thought it was really excellent, a good crowd and we learnt an amazing amount of information about what criminals do and how they think. I feel better prepared now.” An ID Theft booklet by the Australian Government about dealing with identity theft and protecting your identity is available at www.ag.gov.au/identitysecurity.

Open day 2008

Despite previous columns of ours, and others in this newspaper, people are still falling foul of unscrupulous parties claiming to be Microsoft or Computer Maintenance companies. Microsoft does not call, EVER, and if a person tells you they have been monitoring your computer, they are either lying or have been doing so illegally. Recently, hinterland residents have been coerced into giving these scammers remote desktop control of their computers via a legitimate website! This could prove very costly, very damaging and very stressful! Please let all your family and friends know of these scammers. Unfortunately, inquiries with the government authorities found that their processes are not able to stop these online robbers quickly enough, so it’s up to us to get the word out. For more information, go to our site www.mooloolahpc.com.au P.S. There has been some recent confusion about the locality of Mooloolah Computers – just remember we are locals, we operate from home so we can give better value to our customers. We don’t have to pay shop rental, and we offer a free pick-up and delivery service for all local residents.

Tennis history, anyone? Mooloolah local Jenny Morris has been collecting information about the history of the Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club for the past few years. Her plan has been to compile a booklet about the club’s history to coincide next year with their 85th Anniversary. Jenny has dedicatedly undertaken the detective work to put the pieces together, however, she is still keen to hear from anyone who may have a missing piece of the puzzle to establish exactly when the courts on Mooloolah Connection Road, next door to the Sports Club were built. If you have any old family photos that may have been taken at the Tennis Club or of the Glenview Hall (located on the site of the current tennis courts) over the years Jenny would love to be able to see them for possible inclusion in the booklet. With just over six months to go until the big day, Jenny is now into the phase of compiling the content into a booklet, and doing the page layout for the printer and she is keen to find someone to work with her to bring this all together. “If there is someone out there with Publisher Skills that wouldn’t mind working with me on a volunteer basis, I would love to hear from them,” Jenny said. The best way to contact Jenny is via email glenviewmooloolahtennis@ hotmail.com If you would like to know more about the tennis club you can check out their page on the Tennis Queensland website www.tennis.com.au/ glenviewmooloolahtennisclub

festival for Glasshouse Country Beerwah now has an New Contributed by Bob McLean the spring school holidays in September 2013. community may have been wondering why official caravan park The The community is now being asked to provide the Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Just in time for the Christmas holidays, the Sunshine Coast Council has approved a Material Change of Use, permitting Gowinta Farms Caravan Park to open to the public. The 56 site caravan park was first established in 2008 to cater for the seasonal strawberry workers that work on the Sunshine Coast's largest strawberry farm. After the closure of the Glasshouse Mountains Holiday Village, it prompted Gowinta Farms to investigate the viability of opening its park to tourists outside of the strawberry season. The park is no different to any other caravan park. It offers powered sites, all with concrete slabs for an annex, separate men’s and women’s toilet and shower facilities, camp kitchen, dump point and laundry facilities.

Gowinta Farms welcomed its first tourists to the park on Friday, October 28, keen to spend three days taking in Australia Zoo and visiting family in the region. It's hoped the parks reputation as a clean, pet friendly, quiet place to stay will spread fast as Xmas approaches.

Expo has not been receiving any promotion over the past months since this year’s expo and the Glasshouse Country Festival in June. The 10 days of the 2011 festival provided opportunities for 30 special activities in all of the communities in Glasshouse Country, and this model of community group involvement and participation proved to be very successful. The only downside was the festival did not have a core centre to concentrate the focus on one major venue. The expo, being conducted in the one compact venue of the Beerwah Community Hall and Turner Park has created a signature event for Glasshouse Country, concentrated in Beerwah. While it took eight years to grow from a morning event with a keynote speaker supported by the Beerwah Library and six exhibitors, it now features as a full day event with two or three speakers and 130 exhibitors. The expo has been funded in part by Sunshine Coast Council and promoted by the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains and in previous years, planning and coordination for the next expo started the day after the doors closed. We have been seeking a new coordinator for the expo with no success, which unfortunately means that the expo will not occur in 2012. Two meetings have been held, with the last meeting in September attended by about 30 people, and an evaluation team formed to look at a new event. The decision has been taken to work towards an expansion of this year’s Glasshouse Country Festival, with the new festival to focus on the ‘Pleasure of Learning’. It will be concentrated in Beerwah as the activities centre and held during

input into the festival name, and the learning activities to attract visitors. Have your say on facebook or Glasshouse Country Festival www.glasshousecountryfestival.com.au To join in the conversation about our proposed festival, you can do this through Facebook, search for A new festival and then the like button to leave your comments.

From the Schools

Success for all at Beerwah High awards night

Some of the region’s highest accolades were awarded to Beerwah State High students at the school’s Academic Awards Night last week. In a coup for the school, a third of the Sunshine Coast’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) awards went to Beerwah State High students, and four students were also among just 12 in the region to receive bursaries from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Dozens of students received medallions, certificates and prizes for high achievements in the classroom and in cultural and co-curricular endeavours, including Academic Excellence from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Student with Potential and Rio Tinto Big Science Competitions. Dux awards for outstanding academic achievements overall went to Lauren Blake for the middle school and Tyler Bosch for the senior school. Male School Captain 2011, Tyler Bosch was a standout on the night, winning Top Year 12 student for five separate subjects as well as a Pinnacle Award for five consecutive years of high academic achievement.

Tyler Bosch and Asha Josland Female School Captain 2011, Asha Josland, also made a number of appearances, including as a performer with the Senior Dance Company and to receive the Top Year 12 Student in Dance and Excellence in Dance Awards. Next year’s school captains seem set to follow their lead. Alix Murdoch, announced last night as 2012 Male School Captain, also collected awards for Top Year 11 student in English, Maths C, Physics and Chemistry while Female 2012 School Captain, Rae Austin, added the title to her accolades of Academic Achievement Award and Top Year 11 Maths A student.

The greatest story ever told

Macaulay King and Amber Hurst are fearsome soldiers in the Battle of Jericho

Tate Doneathy from Year 2G beautifully narrated The Greatest Story Ever Told

When Glasshouse Country Christian College held its Prep to Year 2 concert last week, it looked like the scene from a work safe advertisement on TV. More than 190 children came on stage to perform but first they craned their necks, peering into the audience looking for their mum and dad. Faces lit up like lights on a Christmas tree when they finally found their parents amongst the crowd. The students performed ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’, singing and dancing to different parts of the Bible. The whole story was beautifully narrated by Tate Doneathy from Year 2 and each class performed well above their tender years. The concert began with the Primary choir singing the B.I.B.L.E. song followed by Prep White’s rendition of ‘If I were a butterfly’ before Year 1G came on stage dressed as raindrops, animals and a rainbow to retell Noah’s Ark. Year 2M asked, ‘How did Moses cross the Red Sea’ and some very fearsome Prep Green soldiers stomped through the ‘Joshua Rap’ blowing the walls down with their vuvuzelas (which were not quite historically accurate for 1250BC but very effective all the same). Year 2M sang and danced gracefully in white and then little lambs from Year 1M captured everyone’s heart with their very cute performance of not being afraid of the boogie man. Prep Maroon students sang ‘Peace like a River’ and then all the students streamed back on stage to sing ‘How much does God love you’ to the audience.

A touch of Italy in Glenview

Gelato, Da Vinci, pizza, students dressed in green, white and red you may have thought you had landed in Italy if you visited Glenview State School on Tuesday, August 30. For the third year the school has celebrated Italian Day which in Italy is held on June 2. Students from all grades participated in a range of fabulous activities. They taste tested some of Italy’s gastronomic delights such as amoretti biscuits, blood oranges, Ferrero chocolate, mozzarella, anchovies, cacciatore, salami and dried olives. They spent weeks making their own ‘horses’ to take part in a recreation of the famous ‘Palio’ horse race which is held in Siena twice a year. A big hit was the gelato stand supplied by Gelato Mio from Coolum which provided a delicious range of real Italian gelato. Other fun activities included pizza dough throwing, Italian games, sketching like Da Vinci and more. The day ended with an Italian Arts Council performance. Italian Teacher, Giuseppina CarusoPainter has Italian heritage from her parents who arrived in Australia in 1968. She said Italian Day at the school had wonderful support from parents, teachers and the whole community. www.gcnews.com.au

Doing Business

Fresh is best at Matilda Fruit Barn

With the wonderful bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables available locally, why would you travel far afield to buy them? At Matilda Fruit Barn, if it’s grown locally, you’ll find it in store, along with an extensive array of quality fruit and vegetables sourced from reputable suppliers. Michael and Jo have established a firm reputation for supplying fresh and affordable produce, and together with their experienced staff, they’ll go the extra mile to keep their customers happy. Proud to be a local business employing local staff and supporting the community, Michael said his experienced staff are well placed to help customers with all their fruit and vegetable needs. From what’s in season to the best way to prepare and serve your family’s fruit and vegetables, Michael and the team are keen to share their love of fresh food. And with Christmas just around the corner, why not get together with neighbours or friends and consider buying all your favourite festive produce in bulk? Michael said now is the time to place your orders for trays of mangoes and stone fruit, boxes of cherries, and more.

Michael and Joel from Matilda Fruit Barn

“This is a really affordable way to make the most of the beautiful summer fruit that typifies an Aussie Christmas,” Michael said. So if you are looking for the freshest, best quality fruit and vegetables, as well as an extensive supply of local plants and locally laid eggs, head down to Matilda Fruit Barn. Open seven days a week, they are conveniently located adjacent to the Matilda Service Station on Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains. Phone them on 5496 9066.

You now have your learner’s license, what’s next? The most beneficial route would be to start off by doing a one hour lesson with an accredited Driver Trainer. At Landsborough Driver Training, we invite the regular driving supervisor (parent, family or friend) to join us in the first lesson. This ensures that the supervisor will guide the learner correctly and not pass on bad habits. Depending on the student’s individual experience and skill level, it is best to do at least one lesson per month to improve and add to their skills. Once you have done about 30 hours, it’s a good idea to start practicing in the area were you are most likely to do your test, that way you increase your familiarity of that area. Some local testing centers are in Caboolture, Caloundra, Maroochydore, and Nambour. It’s very easy and convenient to book lessons online at ldt.net.au. We could be in a lesson, and may not be able to answer the phone straight away. A BIG thank you to Ben Foster from Static Wave for making our website www.ldt.net.au look and function so well for us. Landsborough Driver Training tips 1. Save fuel by avoiding stop/start driving. By observing and scanning ahead you can keep the car flowing. 2. A yellow light is not the extension of the green but the beginning of the red. 3. To all other motorists PLEASE be patient. Most learners need a little more time at intersections, hills and roundabouts, so keep a safe distance and set a good example to our future drivers. Visit our website or give us a call on 0427 997 233.

Health Check Forward head carriage an epidemic Our modern day life places our bodies under different kinds of stresses and more demands than nature intended. Sitting in classrooms, on the lounge and at computers for long periods are just some of the ways we start to develop a forward head carriage and slouch. It’s a proven fact. When our body weight is not rested squarely over our skeleton, we put strain on the muscles of our neck and lower back. Apart from chronic fatigue, this can cause pain and premature ageing. In order to offset the forward head carriage, our upper backs become rounded and our lower backs sway backward (this means we look shorter and rounder). What’s worse is that our bones and discs become compressed, the nerves that run through the spine are affected, and eventually our bodies don’t work the way they should. Ninety per cent of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine. Call us at Living Well Chiropractic to schedule a very affordable consultation and examination, and start the steps to regaining a healthier spine and nervous system. Living Well Chiropractic has clinics in Landsborough and Sippy Downs.

Reflecting on our Toastmasters experience, I believe it takes true inspiration or vision of who and what we can become to draw us through the door of our very first Toastmasters meeting. Welcome to the safe and supportive environment where greatness happens! I thought most people came to the program looking for the same things I did. But what an amazing revelation this experience has been! I find people joining clubs worldwide who already have very sophisticated communication or leadership skill, people who already possess confidence and self-esteem. I gradually realised there really is no typical new or experienced Toastmaster and therefore no definition of how greatness would be defined for them. Toastmasters International is in the education business and we change the lives of men and women around the world, one person at the time, one assignment at the time, each time we receive feedback in the form of applause or a suggestion for improvement. Our toastmasters program empowers us to break the bonds of captivity, to shrug off our lack of self-esteem and lack of confidence and to move through the various levels of communication and leadership development, experiencing mini steps of success each time we challenge ourselves. Glasshouse Country Toastmasters will make sure that when you visit us on the first or fourth Thursday of the month, someone will be there to greet you and make you feel most welcome. Google us at www.glasshousetoastmasters.org or give us a call on 5496 9855 to speak to Martine, or Kerry on 5494 0161.

Caloundra Family History Research Inc Contributed by Roz Kuss, vice president and publicity officer

On October 20, the Caloundra Family History Research Inc held its general meeting at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street. Esma Rigby started the proceedings with the reading of her entry in the inaugural Lorrie Barzdo Writers Award. Titled ‘Unusual Occupations’ it told of an ancestor of hers who had spent 30 years of his life, during the 19th century, attempting to develop a ‘perpetual motion machine’, something that mankind has been trying to invent since the 13th century. The group welcomed a number of members to participate in a genealogy discussion. Geoff Kelly and Sue Schott gave background to their research in South Australia, with some particular success being attributed to that state’s ‘wonderful green books’ held by the South Australian Heritage Society. Dawn Kemp gave an instructional talk on the benefits of using the meeting board facilities on the internet for family history and the results she has achieved. Kerry McGrath showed the relevance and importance of talking to the generations that came before us by playing a much treasured tape of his beloved grandmother talking with a relative, recorded back in 1963. June Blackburn concluded the discussion when she spoke of finding excellent historical information while on holiday in Denmark. All activities conducted by the group, including general meetings with guest speakers (1.30pm 4.00pm on third Thursday each month) are held at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. Phone June 5493 2679, Roz 5493 1197 or Valerie on 5437 3879 or email caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com. Every other Thursday of the month the rooms are open from 9.30am - 4.00pm.

Mr Powell, in the past week you have been good enough to post updates on Six Mile Bridge, Elimbah, D`Aguliar Road signs, postman`s upgrade, bat colony problems etc; yet nil on the Peachester Range four year old problem. Running the red light here is becoming more popular than the famous running of the bulls, more subsidance, cracks appearing, blocked drains etc. If, as it would appear, this is a problem you are unable to advise us as to start/finish dates etc, could you please advise us of someone we may approach for a reasonable response? As the Christmas holiday season is upon us I can only once again stress the pending toll this unsafe section will exact, who then will accept responsibility? The Poddydodger

I would just like to take this opportunity to say a thank you to everyone who was somehow involved in, or supported Tic’s Open Garden Fundraiser, 2011. It was a fairly successful day, even with the bad weather. We were able to raise a total of over $6,000.00 both on the day, and in raffle ticket sales and donations before the event. I’d like to thank in particular, Coochin Creek Co-op, Orrawin Trocki, Sawasdee Spa and Massage, Krua Thai Cooking School, and RACQ Careflight for their contributions towards the raffle prizes. We would also like to thank the generous donations from the Super IGA Beerwah, and Luke’s IGA Glasshouse for all of the groceries they gave us for the event. A huge thanks goes out to all of the friends, family and other volunteers that helped out on the day and in the lead-up to it. And lastly, we would like to thank Glasshouse Country News and Rosemary Hayes for writing and publishing such a lovely article to promote the fundraiser. Tic Davis Glass House Mountains

Thanks for your support

I am a member of the Beerwah RSL Women's Auxillary and we recently held a Trash and Treasure in the grounds of the RSL. We had an overwhelming response on the day despite the weather conditions. I would like to thank all those who donated time, goods to sell, and the customers who all contributed to the success of the day. I trust you found your own little treasure! Thank you all. Peachester History Committee

The Itinerant Teacher contributed by Joy Hodgens

Throughout Queensland's early history, the desire for basic schooling for children living in remote and scattered population areas was largely ignored. The introduction by the Education Department of compulsory free education for children aged six to 12 meant for the first time, the needs of very isolated children had to be addressed. In 1901 itinerant or travelling teachers, who were always male, were appointed to districts, initially in southwest Queensland, where there weren't enough children to form schools. Fred Hodgens was one such itinerant teacher. In 1903 Fred had become his father's pupil teacher at the Tewantin School, earning 30 pounds a year. He trained there for five years before receiving his first appointment to Blyth's Creek. By 1910 he was transferred to the Charleville area as an itinerant teacher travelling as far west as Adavale. He was given a specially designed buggy and a boy who assisted him by setting up camp and taking care of the horses. Fred had to visit every district with school age children up to four times a year – a near impossible task. He soon became adept at loading the buggy with feed for the horses, food requirements for weeks at a time, camping and cooking needs, clothes for all weathers and an estimated number of text books for his pupils. Finding his way from station to station on largely non-existent tracks only with the aid of crude maps, battling the ravages of drought and floods and repairing breakages to his wagon were all part of his continuing existence. Setting up his camp near the homestead Fred usually spent several days teaching the children, more often under the roughest of conditions, correcting work from the previous trip and drawing up tasks for the succeeding months. Parents became the teachers in the interim. After 12 months Fred was transferred to Augathella base where for the next four years he visited stations as far north as Tambo. Although motor bikes and cars were being introduced to some trafficable districts, Fred always drove a buggy. Frederic William Hodgens was 26 years of age when he drove into Charleville in July 1915 to resign as an itinerant teacher and enlist in the A.I.F. Among the joys of his time in the west were the lifetime friendships made and the lasting memory of being asked by the Cobb and Co driver to take the coach into Charleville. By 1922 with the improvement of postal facilities and to overcome the problems of distance, the Department gradually replaced the work of the itinerant teacher by the more efficient Primary Correspondence School System. After returning from WW1, Fred settled in this district, and over several decades served as head teacher at Peachester and Beerwah State Schools. He and his wife Grace (nee Simpson) will be remembered by many GCN readers.

News from Parliament

Day for Daniel

It was great to see the massive support locally and around Australia for Day for Daniel. Denise and Bruce Morcombe and the Daniel Morcombe Foundation are commended for their ongoing efforts at promoting child safety so effectively. I organised Parliamentary Day for Daniel again in the Australian Parliament and it was encouraging to get such a wonderful and enthusiastic response to this important cause. I also wrote to all presiding officers of all state and territory parliaments and the parliament of New Zealand, to encourage their involvement.

During the recent sitting week of Parliament the Waste Reduction and Recycling Bill 2011 was debated in the House. There has been much said about the implementation of this waste levy and not a lot has been good. The LNP has always been opposed to this Bill and I had the opportunity to present our argument in detail. Even after many submissions were tabled from industry stakeholders who all demonstrated the negative affect this Bill would have on the waste sector, the Waste Levy is due to be introduced in December. Whilst the LNP supports waste avoidance, recycling and reuse, we had no choice but to oppose the Bill. Visit my website for my full speech www.andrewpowell.com.au

Caloundra South Development

This has been a big issue over the past six months or so and it is something that will affect the whole of the Sunshine Coast, not just Caloundra. In addition to being very concerned as to how the Pumicestone Passage will be protected, I am worried that the Government refuses to build the necessary infrastructure to compliment the development, namely the rail duplication, CAMCOS and the upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caloundra and the Sunshine Motorway. The Government also needs to fast track the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in the same way they have fast tracked this development. Without the hospital, our already stretched health services will break with the increase in population.

Out and about

In my role as the Shadow Minister for the Environment I have had the opportunity to visit with farmers, growers and producers in Bundaberg recently to hear some of the challenges they are facing with government legislation. I was also asked to visit North Stradbroke Island where I met with local tour operators and also toured the UQ Research Marine Station. Check out my Facebook site for photos and posts from my trips. I took some time out to celebrate with the Peachester State School community at their 100 year centenary a few weeks ago and it was great to see such a good turnout of past and present school families. And let me tell you, a few too many of them lined up to see me get 'dunked' in the water dunking machine! All for a good cause, they told me.

Living Well Music Today

Are you a senior interested in learning to use computers and access the internet?

With our regular columnist, local musician Dr Michael Whiticker

Song writing tips - Part 2 Last month we looked at the importance of having a good song writing method and getting started with the title and words for your song. Let’s begin this session by considering the tools you will need as a song writer. They include: a computer to write and store material on, a small recorder (your smart phone might do the job), a notebook, a dictionary or thesaurus and books and software on the subject of song writing. It is also a good idea to find a few like-minded souls – other budding song writers and potential collaborators! Your strength might be words or music – generally it is not both. And it may be that you are not the ideal singer of the songs you are writing, in which case there is sure to be someone out there who will be able to bring your material to the public’s attention. Start listening to songs as though it is your business, rather than something you just love doing. And listen to a wide range of songwriters – even those you don’t necessarily like. If they are having success, their audience must like what they do, so it is worth understanding what is bringing them their success. Begin to analyse

songs - break them down into their individual components. You know what a verse and chorus are, and you probably know what a bridge is, but do you know what a hook and refrain are? Having a good riff or a groove/feel is something that can define a song, but more important is the structure or form – the right ordering of all the different components of the song. It is sometimes a juggling act to put your hook, groove/patterns, lyrics and tunes/melodies together in the right order. Finally, you need to play your songs in public to see what sort of feedback you get. In our region we have a number of organisations that encourage artists to play their songs. One of these is the monthly Musos Club at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. It is held from 7.00pm on the second Thursday of the month. Next month we’ll look at how music software can assist your song writing and we’ll consider the importance of recording yourself and your songs. Do have a creative musical month! Michael

Out and About Day for Daniel

Business Bowls

More than one million people across the country got involved in Day for Daniel activities last week. Locally, Beerwah Library encouraged library patrons to wear red and show their support for the worthy cause, which aims to raise the awareness of child safety. Beerwah Friends of the Library also got involved, selling a morning tea with all proceeds to The Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

Last Wednesday was the last night of the season for the Business Bowls run at Club Glass House. While there was plenty of friendly rivalry, the bowlers seemed to have plenty of smiles on their faces. The next season starts in the New Year and new teams are encouraged to join in. If you would like to know more give the club a call. The night ended up in a three way play which was an exciting end to a great season with the young guns of the competition Adam Bochow, Danny Kowald and Matt Dragon taking home the winners trophies. It goes to show that bowls is a sport for all ages.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

October 31 marked Halloween, so I thought I would reflect on this for a moment. Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feast of Samhain, which was held annually on October 31 to honour the dead. The festival would last three days until November 2. Time was abolished for the three days of this festival and people did crazy things, men dressed as women and women as men. Farmers’ gates were unhinged and left in ditches, peoples’ horses were moved to different fields, and children would knock on neighbours’ doors for food and treats in a way that we still find today . . . But behind this apparent lunacy, lay a deeper meaning. The Druids knew that these three days had a special quality about them. The veil between this world and the World of the Ancestors was drawn aside on these nights, and for those who were prepared, journeys could be made in safety to the ‘other side’. The Druid rites, therefore, were concerned with making contact with the spirits of the departed, who were seen as sources of guidance and inspiration rather than as sources of dread. The dark moon, the time when no moon can be seen in the sky, was the phase of the moon which ruled this time, because it represents a time in which our mortal sight needs to be obscured in order for us to see into the other worlds. Samhain signifies ‘summers end’ or November. Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred

bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning of a new one. Many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition. The name refers to All Hallows Eve, which is the evening before the All Saints Day of remembering early Christian martyrs. During the 8th century, Pope Gregory III moved All Saints Day from the spring to November 1 to coincide with the pagan festival of Samhain in an effort to sanitise the revelry, which often degenerated into drunkenness and mischievousness. The question for us today is: what are we doing with a day like this? We know its origin. It is similar to that of Christmas and Easter. Should we, if we consider ourselves Christians, celebrate it or not? Is there anything good we can get out of this? Especially when we think of its pagan origin which is contrary to biblical teaching. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

BE A PROACTIVE MORTGAGE HOLDER - AND SAVE. Be a proactive mortgage holder – ask for what you want and start saving. That is the suggestion from Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers to borrowers who may doubt whether they can cut the cost of their loan repayments. According to Teresa Harrison, often borrowers mistakenly believe that all lenders are the same and that there is no scope to reduce loan costs unless you threaten to leave your lender. She says this is far from the truth. “There is a pervasive view that lenders all offer the same products with the exact same requirements, but there is

www.gcnews.com.au

actually a good deal of difference between the lenders on interest rates, fees and credit policies,” Teresa says. “Borrowers can potentially save thousands of dollars by doing a bit of homework and contacting their lender to, for example, request a reduction in their interest rate.” Teresa uses a recent example of a major lender that was advertising reduced interest rates on the life of the loan for new customers. In many cases Smartline’s mortgage advisers simply contacted the lender on behalf of their clients and were able to secure a reduction on the interest

rate for the life of the loans. Teresa says the only thing borrowers needed to be mindful of was ensuring that their “financial house was in order”. “There is no point in asking the banks for a better deal if you’re always late making loan or credit card repayments for instance,” she said. “Borrowers have the best chance of success if they have a savings record, are up-to-date with all of their bill payments, and have resisted signing up for any additional debt.” Teresa said a ‘health check’ with an experienced mortgage adviser who has access to information on

loans from multiple lenders could prove very helpful. “Mortgage brokers have access to a vast array of products and services across a panel of lenders so, unlike lenders, they’re not trying to sell their own products,” she said. “Rather, they’re trying to tailor a solution that suits your unique personal requirements. Call Teresa Harrison on “Often, just going to another bank for a better product offering 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 www.smartline.com.au/tharrison may give you the leverage Smartline CL No. 385325 needed to negotiate with your preferred lender – and a mortgage adviser will do all of the negotiation on your behalf at no cost to you.”

Good, Bad and Amazing!

Going into spring I have been in awe of the amazing creatures in my garden. Literally thousands of tiny creatures of different shapes, size and colour. There was a time I just went about gardening and only noticed those that were terrorising my precious vegetables, such as the 28 Spotted Ladybeetle, Cabbage Butterfly, Pumpkin Beetle and bandicoots … and yes these guys are still present to my frustration. I have a general rule, that if it comes in abundance, it is most likely a pest. This is pretty much how I first discovered the infamous 28 Spotted Ladybeetle. After noticing that I had multitudes of what I thought at the time was a beneficial ladybeetle, I promptly rang my dad to happily boast about my amazingly healthy vegetable patch. To me it was plain obvious. I had heaps of lady beetles that to my knowledge where all good, so this was obviously due to my very loving ‘organic care’ … the ‘organic’ part, being a contentious issue with my dad. He ever so nicely asked if they were the not-sogood 28 Spotted Ladybeetle. To which I chuckled thinking there couldn’t possibly be that many spots on them surely? I wasn’t laughing for long; because to my disbelief, these little creatures were most certainly the one and only pest species of ladybeetle that just thrive on potato leaves. So, now to find the good creatures I suppose it is a given that you need to actually look for them and encourage them to come. Some may ask, why would you be encouraging all sorts of creatures to come into your vegetable patch? Well, simply put, the good often eat the bad. For instance, lady beetles (the good ones) eat sap-sucking mites,

birds eat caterpillars, frogs, spiders and lizards eat loads of insects, and so on. I originally went as far as planting not-so-useful things to attract beneficial insects and creatures, but have since found that just letting a few veggies go to flower has created a haven for them throughout my patch. Another aspect to consider is water. I have containers of water that my Chinese Chestnuts grow in, as well as a bird bath, and this adds to the diversity of creatures able to live in my patch, such as birds and frogs. Finally, having small rocks stacked around provides a home for lizards and small invertebrates. The overall aim is to achieve a balanced system. However, considering that in vegetable gardening you are planting a number of the same species of plant, you will shift the balance and ultimately get pest species in greater numbers than you’d like. The difference though, is that if you have a good number and diversity of the good creatures, they will help stop the bad getting way out of hand. So to all the vegetable gardeners out there, next time you are in the patch checking out what wonderful produce you’re growing, slow down and take a look in amongst the leaves and be amazed by what nature has to offer. Macrophotography is now my newest hobby and I will be begging Santa for a new camera capable of this … hint to the hubby! Until next time in Get Up and Grow…

National Recycling Week highlights batteries and e-waste With toxic and valuable resources either polluting the environment or going to waste, National Recycling Week (November 7-13) is a timely reminder that we could all be doing better. This year, Planet Ark is targeting car batteries, other electronic waste and office paper in particular, as many householders and businesses are unsure of how to dispose of these materials. “We are good recyclers of newspapers, aluminium cans and milk and juice cartons, however what to do with e-waste is still the biggest problem facing Australian households and businesses,” says Planet Ark’s Manager of Recycling Programs, Janet Sparrow. “Our two recycling information services receive hundreds of thousands of enquiries a year with the largest group being about e-waste.” Printer cartridges, mobile phones and batteries are three of the most common forms of electronic waste and there are effective programs to deal with them. The ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ and MobileMuster programs both run through all Officeworks stores and participating Australia

Post outlets. Cartridges and mobiles are recycled to high environmental standards. More than 345 million batteries are purchased in Australia each year including 1.8 million car batteries. Until recently there wasn’t much that Australians could do with them. There are now well established, nationwide networks for the responsible collection and recycling of used batteries thanks to Battery World and Century Yuasa. For further information about any of Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week call 1300 733 712.

Sunshine Coast Airport a significant project Sunshine Coast Council’s proposed new runway project is another step closer after being declared a significant project. Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot has welcomed the announcement by Premier Anna Bligh, saying it’s a game-changer for the Sunshine Coast. Mayor Abbot said it will add $1.6 billion to the Sunshine Coast economy, create 5,000 new jobs between 2016 and 2050 and connect Coast businesses to rapidly growing markets in China, India and beyond. The declaration means the State and Commonwealth agencies will work collaboratively through the statutory approval process.

Sunshine Coast Council has endorsed a draft Recreation Trail Plan which will ensure a variety of trails are available for residents and visitors to safely enjoy the Sunshine Coast landscape on mountain bike, horse back and by walking. The draft plan will be available for public consultation in the period leading up to Christmas. Major Projects Portfolio Councillor Cr Debbie Blumel who chaired the Recreation Trail Reference Group said that the plan aimed to implement aspects of the Open Space Strategy and Sport and Active Recreation Plan. A wide variety of consultation has already been undertaken in developing the Draft Recreation Trail Plan 2011. This included 13 community workshops and guidance by the Recreation Trail Reference group. The draft Master Plan and Feedback Form will be available on council’s website from Monday, November 7 until December 5.
