Hi Everyone
T
oday, Monday marks another year that I have spent as the editor, so that makes 12 years already! Which is perfect timing for celebrating the milestone as the GCNews office team will be heading out to lunch tomorrow for the Melbourne Cup. Well, all of us except Brownie, who for some strange reason is happy not to get dressed up and have lunch with six giggling women, indulging in a glass of bubbles at lunch time. Next week you can expect plenty of photos taken at a number of the many Melbourne Cup events happening all across Maleny and Glasshouse Country. If you take some good photos of your friends looking gorgeous, please send them through for us to include in next week’s edition – send to editorial@ gcnews.com.au see instructions on page 30. Local News High School Celebrates 25 Years By Ashleigh Dwan
Last Saturday marked the 25th anniversary of Beerwah State High School. To commemorate, the school held its very own event, full of fun and sentiment. It was an opportunity to reminisce on fond memories made at Beerwah, regardless of whether you graduated three years ago, or were part of the foundation teaching staff in 1992. There was live music, dance performances and drama skits showcasing the very talented students. From this alone it was easy to see why the school has had so much success over the past quarter of a decade. There is no doubt Beerwah High holds a special place in our community. What makes it so distinctive is the emphasis on tradition. From Cheer Cup and Run the Corridors to the iconic Clap Out ceremony, this school is unique. Former principals Boyd Jorgenson and Graham Trevenen both addressed this in their speeches and attributed tradition to the overall identity of Beerwah State High School. “Beerwah is a wonderful school," said Mr Trevenen. “We develop the whole student, whether it’s sporting, academic or cultural endeavours.” Many hours were also spent tracking down former students in the hopes to create a “where are they now?” video compilation. What transpired

The five Beerwah High Principals; Boyd Jorgensen, Graham Trevenen, (photographed) Mike Anderson, Glen Robinson and Iqbal Singh was a beautifully crafted montage of hundreds of Beerwah graduates each expressing their admiration for their place of education. Slightly aged photographs and black and white yearbooks were also on display, proudly showing the growth of the school. P&C President Coralie Lillecrapp, who helped organise the anniversary, said it was a pleasure to be part of the event. She said it was important to be able to showcase the school's success and was extremely proud of its history. Current Principal, Glen Robinson, expressed his enthusiasm for the future. “I’m extremely honoured to have lead Beerwah State High School in 2016 and I’m looking forward to the years ahead.”

Minister inspects infrastructure priorities Last Wednesday, Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, visited some of the local major infrastructure projects and priorities.

Showing him the sights were locals Andrew Wallace, Federal Member for Fisher and State Andrew Powell, State Member for Glass House. Inspecting the site of the $929.3 million Caloundra Road-Sunshine Motorway interchange project and the proposed infrastructure works and duplication of the railway lines, Mr Chester said the visit was a great opportunity to see what the Coast needed now and to cater for future growth.

More accommodation options for Landsborough A development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council which will increase the affordable housing options for Landsborough. Eighth Gate Capital Management Pty Ltd is seeking to construct a 22 site relocatable home park on 8 Hardwood Road, Landsborough as an extension to the adjoining Landsborough Pines Caravan Park. The 7,860sq.m site currently has a detached house and is zoned for Low Density Residential. The development application is arguing that the relocatable home park be considered as an Example photo only

allowable use. Under the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, a relocatable home park is a ‘potentially consistent use’. Access to the relocatable home park will be through the existing caravan park, with residents using the facilities of the caravan park as well. According to the planning report, the proposal is an appropriate extension of the existing Landsborough Pines Caravan Park, whilst also being of a scale and intensity to ensure that it will not have an unduly deleterious impact upon the amenity of the adjacent detached residential uses. The report also suggests that the development will not have any deleterious traffic impacts on the adjacent streets or the operation of the Steve Irwin Way. Save time and money with Maleny Self Storage, a purpose built, state of the art storage facility, centrally located in Coral Street, Maleny. Being a Hinterland local and having seen the growth and change in Maleny over the last 20 years, owner Shane Katsaras saw the need for a local self storage facility. Changing face of Beerwah and beyond Have you noticed the billboard go up on the land opposite Glasshouse Views retirement village and aged care centre on Peachester Road at Beerwah? It signals that the last major residential development in the near-CBD of Beerwah is about to get underway, with the launch of Millbrook Estate (www.millbrook.com). The land was, for many years, the site of a sawmill and a residual link to the very different times of ‘Beerwah-past’. Once the 48 housing lots are gone … and they probably will sell quickly … that will basically be it for larger scale new housing developments for inner-Beerwah. It also heralds a new form of development for the area – that of medium-density single dwelling houses on small blocks – as small as 240 square metres. The newly released draft SEQ Regional Plan has no inclusions for expanding the inner-urban footprint in central Beerwah. In fact, all the towns from Beerburrum to Mooloolah have very minor changes to their urban footprint from previous plans. There are a few remaining land parcels in still under-construction estates, and a couple of smaller yet to commence rural residential developments, but larger opportunities close to the town centres have all been built out. The small gains urban footprint included in the Draft SEQ Plan, include: • An amalgamation of blocks at Landsborough bounded by Gympie Street North and Tunnel Ridge Road
Asparagus 2 bunches for $4.00 MALENY HARVEST RETAIL & WHOLESALE is our speciality, free home deliveries available We use as much local produce as available
Blueberries $3.99 punnet
• A large block at 68 Newells Road, Beerwah • The pineapple and farming blocks across Steve Irwin Way from the Tobacco Road estate, Beerwah • The land between Back Creek Road and Coochin Hills Drive at Beerwah • An amalgamation of blocks between Buzaki Road and Clearview Drive, Glass House Mountains There will be opportunities for more town houses and unit blocks in what is called ‘in-fill’ development, but the state government is now looking to the Beerwah East greenfield future development site (which is roughly situated between Landsborough and Beerwah on the eastern side of Steve Irwin Way) to house the inevitable growth of our region. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson is supportive of the planning outcome. “Following strong and consistent advocacy by council, the draft SEQ Regional Plan identifies Beerwah East in the Urban Footprint – a preferred location for long term growth,” Mayor Jamieson said. “Beerwah East will provide public transport connections and routes and the additional 10,000 to 20,000 dwellings required to meet the predicted population growth to 2041 and beyond.” The fact that the SEQ Plan designates Beerwah as a ‘Major Regional Activity Centre’ means that the function and look of Beerwah will change even further. Who would have thought that Beerwah would have a Target store and almost as many coffee shops as Maleny?
KP Mangoes $3.99 ea 1kg bag Tomatoes $1.99
The Sunshine Coast Strategic Plan also sets out the future look of Beerwah too. The $5 million streetscaping improvements have reinvigorated the town centre, but there is more to come. The Council planning scheme allows for the Simpson Street built environment to grow to a couple of storeys in height, creating the opportunity for more and varied retail, office and commercial spaces. The Beerwah Masterplan has Turner Park growing into Beerwah’s civic heart and gathering place. State Government has plans to upgrade the rail to dual lines, meaning that commuting to and from Brisbane will be more efficient. The face of Beerwah is certainly evolving … and Landsborough appears to be next in line for some of the same.

James Robertson Munro 9th Battalion, AIF Block # 462 Year of birth: 1881 Place of birth: United Kingdom Date arrived Beerburrum: 1916 Date left Beerburrum: 1923 Date of Death: 1968 Place of Death: Queensland James enlisted August 21, 1914 and was one of the first ashore at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915 when he was shot in the foot. He was returned to Australia and discharged in June 1916. He was allotted Block 462 on November 6, 1916. In 1923 James and six children were living in a six-room cottage on their block. He had invested £200 of his own money; he had spent £392 on improving his block, but had received only £264 income. Prospects looked good for the following year with a projected income of £450. However, things soon went bad. In a report of March 1923, the settlement supervisor wrote: ‘Munro is always full of excuses and promises re the cleanup of his farm, but they never materialise. 'The settler, seemingly, is not capable of working his farm satisfactorily. The bulk of the pine area, which has been planted some five years, is now only for pulling out and replanting.’ In September 1923, James requested a new horse be issued to him as he had just had to destroy his previous one on account of its poor condition. He stated “I cannot do much without a horse.”
However, the settlement supervisor had a different view when he wrote: ‘I beg to advise that the horse issued by the Department had got so low in condition through ill-feeding and ill treatment that the Inspector for Cruelty to Dumb Animals ordered the destruction of the animal in question...I have refused this man a [replacement] horse from those in stock on Beerburrum simply on account of his inability to feed and care for same, and in relation to the fact that he illtreats animals.’ For James things seemed to get worse that same month when he wrote: ‘I may state I’ve had a very bad time of it lately having to give away three of my little children for adoption too poor to keep them. I have three left…..’ and in another letter after he'd been told to take more care of his farm or risk forfeiture he wrote pleading he was doing his best: ‘Now Sir for humanity's sake look into this matter. I have three more children with me here they have no mother to look after them. I am looking well after the farm and them at the same time. Again I swear I am looking after the farm…...’ For James, enough was enough. In December, he sold what he could and walked off the Settlement.

William Gerber 2nd Light Horse Regiment/4th Pioneer Battalion Block # 580 Year of birth: 1886 Place of birth: Switzerland Date arrived Beerburrum: 1918 Date left Beerburrum: 1921 Date of Death: 1921 Place of Death: Beerburrum William, who preferred to be called Walter, was born in Switzerland. He arrived in Australia in 1907 on board the SS Prinz Bulow at Sydney. When he enlisted in March 1915 he was working as a labourer in Bundaberg. Interestingly, he stated at the time that he was a naturalised British Subject. Walter arrived in France in June 1916 and was soon in action in the Battle of the Somme. On August 16, he was wounded in the shoulder but remained on duty. Five days later he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. On October 9 ‘he was buried by a shell explosion and then blown up by another shell explosion at the same time. He was sent from the line in an unconscious condition which lasted an hour and a half.’ After a period of recuperation in England it was decided Walter was no longer fit for active service and he was returned to Australia in September 1917. Walter arrived in Beerburrum around November 1918, took land and became a model settler. He was very active in the affairs of the Settlement and became an unofficial representative of the Settlers.

74 Simpson Street, Beerwah Despite claiming he was naturalised upon enlistment, this was incorrect. Once settled in Beerburrum Walter initiated the naturalisation process. When asked why he hadn't attended to this in the years since 1907 he stated in 1920 that: ‘Owing to family & property reasons there was always a chance of my being recalled to Switzerland & in that event I should probably not have returned to Australia….I may also state that I am going to be married in June to a girl who is a British subject’. He might also have stated he has spent almost three years fighting for his soon to be adopted country! After a lengthy process that involved proving he was in fact Swiss, obtaining character references from people he knew, getting a certificate of good standing from the police and writing multiple letters, his application was granted in May 1920. However, he never swore the Oath of Allegiance and so never became Naturalised prior to his death in February 1921. He is buried in Beerburrum cemetery.

Local lass competes in New Caledonia By Sonia Clark
Thirteen-year-old Sharnte Wilson from Peachester has recently returned from a week-long equestrian competition in New Caledonia, where she and three other girls from the Burpengary Western Performance Club, were selected to represent Australia. Since she started riding competitively just over a year ago, Sharnte has achieved numerous awards, including the prestigious ‘High Point Youth of Australia’ title and High Point Youth of QLD award. The Beerwah State High Student has been around horses from an early age living on her families’ Peachester property and horse stud farm. Sharnte became more involved with riding from the age of nine, starting with a 12-year-old mare named ‘Honey’ who she rode until the horse was retired at 15. Sharnte’s grandparents had a younger mare ‘Hot N Sassy’ who is also known as ‘Tink’; and after a year or so of building up her confidence in riding a younger more active horse, Sharnte started showing Tink at local shows. Sharnte progressed to competing in the Q16 Australian Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Nationals held in Tamworth NSW with Tink and gained ‘High Point 12-14 Youth of Show’. Returning from Tamworth, Sharnte set her sights on competing towards ‘High Point Youth of Australia’. Over a 12 month period with lots of late nights and 4.00am starts, Sharnte and family travelled around the country. Sharnte and Tink won numerous awards with Sharnte basically showing Tink every week.
“I am so proud of Tink for us accomplishing these major awards together. I also couldn’t have done it without my grandparents Peter and Kerrie Bellden as they were the ones driving me around the country, as well as the help from my trainers and the encouragement from my family,” said Sharnte. Staying with a local family in New Caledonia last month, where the Australian team had been billeted, Sharnte came home with ‘Runner Up Youth’ of the show. “It was an amazing experience to work as a team and a great accomplishment for me to be showing out of Australia. We even learnt to speak a little French and communicate in a different language,” said Sharnte. Next year Sharnte aims to do shows within Qld, NSW and Victoria, and in coming years, hopes to make the Trans Tasmin Team (Australia vs. New Zealand) and compete in the 2018 Youth World Cup in Texas.

Wild Weaver
MASSAGE SPECIAL !
By Sonia Clark
Diamond Valley resident Judy Wolski has a passion for weaving with wild and weedy material and has been producing her artistic basket creations for over 20 years. Recently stepping down from full time work to concentrate on her art, Judy was first introduced to basket weaving as a young girl when she would accompany her grandmother at weaving classes. Judy and her husband Richard moved to Diamond Valley 13 years ago, and prompted by their love of the local bush, soon realised they could help remove the abundance of local invasive weeds while providing raw material to create ‘durable and useful works of art’. Judy’s ecologically responsible approach to using wild materials for her art has seen her present numerous workshops around the Sunshine Coast. Around her local area, Judy with the help of her ‘hunter and gatherer’ husband Richard, identifies and harvests three main types of invasive weeds – Morning glory, Cats claw creeper and Moth vine. Often these vines grow in abundance on council land and Judy periodically seeks permission to harvest the weeds from local council. Local landowners have also provided permission to harvest the vine and roots. “I always stress the importance of the proper removal and disposal of theses vines,” she said. “It’s not just a case of cutting the vine to let it grow back or throwing back into the bush what you don’t need – you either burn it or bag it to stop regrowth.” Each basket can take from around two to seven hours to complete and the process involves collecting the vine, cleaning it, drying it and then rehydrating it before weaving.

A lot of work goes into processing the material for use, and once the material is re-wet for use it needs to be woven until finished which provides a good excuse to sit, relax and weave. “Although labour intensive to process, it is so much nicer to harvest local material than buying a bundle of cane at a store. It provides a cost effective locally sourced material that also provides a positive environmental benefit,” says Judy. Judy’s next workshop will be at the launch of the Hinterland Harvest Markets at Woombye on November 12. Far From This Land exhibition remembers local servicemen With Remembrance Day on November 11 approaching, the Landsborough Museum reminds the community of its ‘Far From This Land’ exhibition, which commemorates the war experiences of local servicemen and women. The exhibition has been open since 2015, but will close next year in July. World War 1 touched the lives of nearly every Australian with 420,000 enlisting from a population of about four million. Of these, over 2,000 men and women came from the Sunshine Coast area. Three Dead Man's Pennies, postcards, letters home, and a one-legged shovel are just a few of the items in the Museum's collection displayed as part of its World War 1 exhibition. Far From This Land follows the journey of servicemen, James Donald Maddock, William Murphy and Harry Hapgood as they travelled to the Middle East and Europe. Sadly, only Harry returned. It also features Private Percy Edwards and Staff Nurse Sister Connie Lindsay who both had a connection to the local area. The Landsborough Museum is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 9.00am to 3.00pm (last entry 2.30pm).
Essence of McCotter and Pullen Art This month’s Exhibition at Vianta, ‘Essence of McCotter and Pullen Art’, is shared between June McCotter and Rhonda Pullen. June and Rhonda have been exhibiting together for many years, and although their styles and subject matter are quite dissimilar, their works complement each other, and they are each inspired by the work of the other artist. June says of her work: "Life and death.. action and reaction.. ebb and flow.. life moves in cycles and nature echoes those cadences. My work is increasingly inspired by the intrinsic rhythms of life. Changes in the world around me flow in and through my brush. "External forces are internalised and then spill back out as I paint. My brushstrokes mirror nature’s vibrations, as soft pools of light peek through blossoming gardens, fiery fuchsias ignite crisp blues. "Each painting becomes a reflection of the pattern in which I find myself at that moment - the mood, the colours, the energy of each painting are as unique as the path I travel. These paintings are a part of me and a part of everything. We are one rhythm,” she said. Her favourite subject is her cattle station. Alcheringa is nestled in a little country town of Mt Perry and offers a wealth of pictorial opportunities for her to explore. Rhonda is a self-taught artist with a love of colour "the brighter the better" who has only been painting on canvas for the last four years. Before that she manufactured silk dyes for 12 years and taught silk painting. ‘Essence of McCotter and Pullen Art’ will hang at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, from October 30 to November 27, and will officially open at 6.00pm on Friday, November 4.

Running with the Lions completed
Did you know?
Contributed by Mike Foal The Maleny Blackall Range Lions were very proud to host the Mountain View Challenge running events on October 16, starting at the Maleny Showgrounds. There were some remarkable performances on the day, especially in the half marathon, won by a dad pushing his little boy in a pram for the whole 21.1 km! Besides that, the winner of the 10,000 metres was only six minutes outside the world record for the distance, and he was running over our hills compared to the Olympic record holder running around a flat arena. The students from Beerwah High School took the Your Insurance Broker Trophy in the 5,000 metres, but for the Lions, the real highlight of the day was the 130 plus runners in the 3,000 metres. This event had been promoted to primary schools, inviting them to bring a team of students and parents to compete for the Maleny Realty Participation Trophy. The idea behind this is to get the little ones to enjoy running for fun with mates and parents so they will be encouraged to keep going and really enjoy the fitness that comes from regular running. The honours went to Caloundra City Private School who brought a very keen team all the way up to Maleny. Palmwoods and Glass House Mountains schools put on a great show too. Thousands of dollars were raised at the challenge for the Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.

Local RSL 70 Years in the Glasshouse Country By Denis Hare The current Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch is an amalgamation of the Glass House Mountains and Landsborough RSL Sub Branches. After WW1, returning soldiers formed the Returned Sailors’ Soldiers’ Imperial League of Australia (R.S.S.I.L.A.) sub branches in both towns. Not much detail is available, but daily life must have been hard in the depression for the WW1 veterans, many with severe injuries from wounds, gassing and traumatised ‘shell shock’ from their service. The returning servicemen and women from WW2 re-formed the veteran sub branches as the Returned Sailors’ Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia (R.S.S.A.I.L.A.) in both townships. Glass House Mountains RSL Sub Branch No other details on the 1921 sub branch are known but during and after WW2 many of the returned servicemen from the area were part of the Caboolture R.S.S.A.I.L.A. Sub Branch and were strongly supported by a local Glass House Mountains women’s auxiliary. The Caboolture R.S.S.A.I.L.A. Sub Branch officiated at the local ANZAC Day service. The Glass House Mountains R.S.S.A.I.L.A. Sub Branch was formed on October 17, 1946 at a meeting held in the School of Arts Hall. The first president was Harry Moses, MiD, a WW2 veteran. Meetings were held monthly on a week night, usually Wednesday, in the School of Arts Hall. In 1949 a decision was made to build a Memorial Hall. To this end, the sub branch conducted a raffle involving prizes valued at about £300. The Glass House people then, as they always have done, gave the R.S.S.A.I.L.A. marvellous support. The raffle netted the R.S.S.A.I.L.A. about £1300. The sub branch asked its farmer members for donations of millable timber. Another member owned a small mill and the donated timber was milled free, as his contribution. Under the supervision of two members who had carpentry skills, a 30 by 20 feet (8m x 5m) building was erected on land obtained from the Department of Lands. This is still the site of the Diggers’ Hall, as it was called in the early days.
The RSL Hall in the early 1950s A number of major additions have occurred since, the first to add the billiards room (part closest to Steve Irwin Way) in 1962, followed by the kitchen, bar and office areas and the current toilets. An old building behind the original post office was pulled down by the Diggers and material from this building was used for some of the additions to the club house. In 2009, the weatherboard vinyl wall cladding was added to the outside walls. Painting and maintenance activities have been ongoing by the sub branch members since the hall was first built. The initial sub branch had a number of members from Beerburrum, the centre of the 1914-18 soldier settlement scheme and, in the early days, had a mix of WW1 and WW2 veterans as members. The sub branch also had a very strong women’s auxiliary that supported the men. The Glass House Mountains R.S.S.A.I.L.A. was the first sub branch between Nambour and Caboolture to have its own hall. Many, like the Landsborough R.S.S.A.I.L.A. Sub Branch, continued to meet in their local community halls. 12

RSL Hall in 2015 In 1965, the R.S.S.A.I.L.A name was changed to the Returned Services League of Australia and in 1990 the current name was adopted, the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL). Over the years, age took its toll, membership declined and a proposal that the Landsborough and Glass House Mountains RSLs should amalgamate became a reality on December 8, 1991 and become the Glass House Mountains – Landsborough RSL Sub Branch. The first President of the combined RSL Sub Branch was William ‘Bill’ Gilvear. Bill was too young to serve in WW1 with his father and six brothers (three were KIA), but was a WW2 veteran and the first vice president of the Glass House Mountains RSL. The amalgamated sub branch held its ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Landsborough, and then the march/service in the Glass House Mountains. Today that tradition continues. In late 2002, to help run and enjoy the faculties of the sub branch, social membership was allowed as part of the local RSL structure, but social members would have no input into the formal management of the sub branch. In the mid-2000s, the Ladies’ Auxiliary was re-formed as a Citizens’ Auxiliary and a number of local men with historical connections to local service members joined. Friday night meals by volunteers for members and guests have been a feature of the sub branch for many years and have helped fund the maintenance of the club house and other activities of the sub branch. Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch In 2008, the name of the RSL sub branch was changed to the ‘Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch’ to better reflect the developing local area of the RSL. In the true spirit of ANZAC, the first president of the newly named RSL was Derek Prentice, an ex-national service soldier from New Zealand who, together with his family, had made the Glass House Mountains his home. In 2010, the sub branch had another first: Libby Dios-Brun (nee Brown) was the first ex-servicewoman to serve as sub branch president. In 1949 the sub branch had between 45 and 50 members. In 1999 it had a similar membership but also the reputation of having the highest percentage of service members in the South Eastern District of Queensland attending the monthly meeting. Today as the sub branch turns 70, it still has a similar membership; however the service membership is aging and the sub branch meetings are not well attended. The Citizens’ Auxiliary has ceased operating. Current President, Kevin Beasley, details that a few service members, social members and volunteers are keeping the Glasshouse Country RSL open, along with the support of the community. It is hoped that, with more service people retiring to the area, the ‘Diggers Club’ and the sub branch will continue to support the communities of the Glass House Mountains and Landsborough for many years into the future.

Updates
Twinnies head to Probus
The Twinnies are well known and respected for the work that they undertake through their Pelican and Sea Bird Rescue service based at Landsborough. While they are located in our local region and their influence is expanding rapidly, in just 10 years they have extended their reach to cover a vast proportion of Queensland – from the Gold Coast to Townsville on the coast, as well as inland. Despite the growing demands on their time, they are making themselves available to address Glasshouse Mountains Probus Club meeting on Wednesday, November 9, at the Beerwah Community Hall. The Twinnies will speak about how they became involved with caring for wildlife, working with Steve and Bob Irwin, the amazing work they now do, the effort required to raise sufficient funds, the incredible volunteers without whom it would be impossible to function, and the staggering 98% success rate they have when treating Pelicans for botulism. For further information, contact our Membership Officer Mr Gordon McCormack on 5439 0446 or attend as a visitor to one of our monthly meetings which are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 10.00am at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the Beerwah Library).
Supporting those living in poverty
Contributed by Janet Kitchin The Glasshouse Country View Club’s recent luncheon meeting was held during Poverty Week. Our speaker this month was John Kenny from Suncoast Care – we learnt that Suncoast Care is part of the ministry of the Church of Woombye and also forms part of Global Care in Australia. Part of what they do is to operate a low-cost outlet for groceries from a warehouse in Nambour where members on a low income can obtain provisions at a much-reduced rate – Woolworths, Coles and Aldi all provide groceries as do fruit and veg stores and local farmers.
They also operate a program where around 18 local schools are able to provide breakfast and a packed lunch to needy children – they run a soup kitchen twice a week, serving a threecourse meal to about 70 people in conjunction with Orange Sky Laundry, who offer showers and a laundry service to needy people. Any ladies who are interested in joining our club should contract either Lynda on 5494 7875 or Maree on 5494 6956 for more information. View Clubs support the Smith Family activities including the ‘Learning for Life’ program.
Funding announcement for Glass House Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell has welcomed a recent announcement that will provide funding to many worthy community groups in the Glass House electorate. Mr Powell has reported that 11 groups will share in just over $279,000 through Round 89 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to help them with the purchase of necessary equipment, to upgrade facilities or perform beautification projects. Four of the groups that are within the GC&M News circulation area that are successfully receiving funds are Glasshouse Country RSL sub-branch for the installation of a solar system, The Maleny District Guides for upgrading their building, the Maleny and District Men’s Shed Inc to construct their shed as well as Celebrate
Beerwah Inc for the purchasing of a shipping container. “A lot of the recipients in Glass House are using the funds to upgrade their facilities or install new fittings which will not only have a positive effect on their current members but also go a long way to attracting new membership. “All of these community groups are run by volunteers and the application process is not an easy one to navigate so I congratulate those who have put in the effort and been successful this time around.

Maleny Cruise & Travel Most Improved for 2016 On Saturday, October 15, Gillian Mills from Maleny Cruise & Travel, travelled to the RACV City Club in Melbourne to attend the 30 year celebration dinner for ATAC, the Australian Travel Agents Co-operative, of which Maleny Cruise & Travel is an agent for. While she was there, she was extremely honoured to receive the award for Most Improved Office, 2016. The award is a great achievement and Gillian feels particularly honoured for Maleny Cruise & Travel to receive such an accolade in this age of internet bookings and self-booked travel. “It’s the work we do before you travel, that makes the difference,” is one of Gillian’s catch cries and it seems that it is indeed, with this award an acknowledgement of the hard work, dedication and years of experience that Gillian offers all of her clients at Maleny Cruise & Travel.
Do you want to help raise funds on McHappy Day? This year Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of McHappy Day and inviting local community groups to show their support. Getting together to form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ will help the charity raise a record breaking $3.8 million for seriously ill children and their families across Australia. Taking place on Saturday, November 12, McHappy Day will once again bring the community together for a fun family day out, while raising much-needed funds for RMHC’s essential programs and services which have so far helped over 120,000 Australian families. Local community and business groups are encouraged to get involved and support seriously ill children and their families by volunteering their time to help collect donations in fundraising buckets at their local McDonald’s restaurant on McHappy Day. Ronald McDonald Houses are attached to major women's or children’s hospitals and provide accommodation for families with a seriously ill child while they are receiving treatment. Raising funds on McHappy Day will help even more families stay close together at one of the toughest times in their lives and continue to provide families with a home away from home. To form a ‘Bucket Brigade,’ or get involved at your local McDonald’s, please contact the McHappy Day Project Office on mchappyday@ppr.com.au.
Take a look around The Landsborough Dental Centre will hold an open day on Saturday, November 12, from 8.30am to 1.00pm to celebrate the opening of their new surgery at Shop 7, 1 Maleny Street, Landsborough. There will be a sausage sizzle, balloons and free kids packs, and everyone is welcome. For those who are interested in learning more about dental implants, teeth whitening and Invisalign treatments, there will be education sessions run on the day. There is also the chance of a free consultation. For more details please call 5439 9665 or come along on the day. www.gcnews.com.au

School News Volleyball State Champions Swimming kicks off with a splash!
Queensland champions: Mackenzie Still, Elliot Stevens, Bakani Kombani, Patrick McKenzie, Bayley O'Brien, JD Theron and Aiden McKellar Glasshouse Christian College boys’ volleyball team are now the best in Queensland for Division 2 in the Junior Schools Cup State Volleyball Championships. GCC had two Year 8 teams participate and both teams were nominated for the Division 2 competition. The boys topped their Pool in a three-way fight for first place. Due to their performance in previous games, they were given first place in Pool B, which sent them straight into the semifinals. The boys played and won a tough and very close three-setter against Kings Christian College and found themselves in their very first state grand final where they won two sets to nil. The girls’ team also did very well and came seventh in Queensland. GCC volleyball teams have worked hard all year and played in three separate competitions where the girls made two finals and came runners up twice and the boys made three finals and won three championships. They have also won the Junior boys’ SCISSA and Trish Buckley titles two years in a row. Not too shabby from a little school in Beerwah!

Term 4 at Mooloolah State School sees all students from Prep to Year 6 take to the school pool for swimming lessons and skills for PE. Prep students have actually hit the school pool for the first time this year. The students learn important skills and safety aspects of being in and around water as well as having fun and learning to swim for younger students. For the older students that are confident swimmers, they learn stroke correction or enhancements, lap swimming and survival skills as part of the school curriculum. The Preps were so excited for their first swim and did a fantastic job of safe entries, blowing bubbles, going under, floating and kicking. Swimming is a huge part of our school community and is offered at a reduced rate for 20 weeks of the school year, this is a wonderful thing for confidence, skills and learning swimming. Who knows we may have a future Olympian swimmer in the making right here in Mooloolah. The skills and techniques learnt throughout the term gears the students up for the swimming carnival at the end of the year, a massive event that I’m sure every student will be keen for.
Roars of applause
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School students transported audiences to the heart of the African savannah with a remarkable rendition of Disney’s 'The Lion King Jr.' The school’s hall was transformed with awesome African artwork, which set the scene for two sold-out shows. The musical brought the story of Simba to life through authentic music, elaborate costumes and striking visuals. The whole school production saw all classes from Prep through to Year 6 perform, which meant every single student had a part to play in the performance. Under the leadership of Creative Industries teacher, Miss Brook, and teacher-aide, Miss Haley, students played their roles to perfection and sang classic tunes made famous by the Broadway production and film, including ‘Hakuna Matata’ and ‘Circle of Life’. 'The Lion King Jr.' highlighted the incredible musical, theatrical and artistic talents of students, in addition to the stellar level of arts instruction they are receiving at Landsborough State School. It took an army of adult volunteers to aid in making all the costumes, set pieces and applying makeup; but the hard work paid off! The school wishes to thank all the students, staff, parents and community members who helped make the production such a huge success.

Business is booming for Brad
Environment Bobstock Music Festival
Business feature Brad McKay seems like your typical everyday type of bloke; however his easygoing outlook belies a motivated small business operator who is driven to secure a stronger financial future for himself and his family. Brad, who is based in Broken Hill, is a recent addition to the growing list of Transportable Shade Shed resellers who has realised the opportunity to become a viable small business owner. Brad is now his own boss, selling and installing a product that has a multitude of uses, an ever-increasing range, and is fully Australian designed and manufactured. Resellers are not franchise operators; they manage their own business with the substantial advantage of having comprehensive access to company training and head office assistance, as well as online marketing and business support services. Brad has an extensive trade background working as a boilermaker, plumber and gasfitter and much of his work has previously involved establishing new mine sites across Australia. Self-employed, primarily as a plumber and gas fitter for the last eight years, Brad had also spent time building carports and steel verandas. This has provided a familiarity with the range of products offered by Transportable Shade Sheds, as well as an understanding of the continual need for these types of structures. Given his location towards the heart of Australia, Brad is well placed to sell a product which offers a high level of sun, UV and protection from the elements. Since becoming a reseller, Brad has benefitted greatly from the additional online marketing support of Saver6.com; the cloud based small business support platform that has partnered with Transportable Shade Sheds. “Saver6.com has already been good for my business. While I’ve concentrated on building my business around the Broken Hill area; Saver6. com has been targeting leads for me further afield which has been great. For example, I’ve had heaps of leads generated in nearby Mildura – which being rural and farming industry region is well suited to the products – I’m very impressed so far,” said Brad. In deciding to become a reseller, Brad discussed the business opportunity with his wife and they spent the time to look into the various products offered with Transportable Shade Sheds. Impressed with the everincreasing range of products, Brad felt the product versatility and the ability to have well designed and manufactured structures custom made to suit individual clients, was also an attractive long term viable business option. Transportable Shade sheds are continually looking into expanding their versatile range. New to their product range is the flat roofed 3x3 Skillion Shade Shed which retails under $1,000 and redesigned shed packaging which offers flat packed sheds available in popular colours to be shipped direct from the Sunshine Coast factory around Australia, allowing for a most cost effective way of shipment. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around Broken Hill and surrounding areas, please contact Brad via social media or on 0438 792 102. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area, or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
Please call Brad McKay, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

A dedicated group of ex-Australia Zoo employees have spent many years working for Bob and Steve and they are now volunteering their time to help Bob and his new project, the Bob Irwin Wildlife and Conservation Foundation Inc. This not-for-profit environmental organisation works to educate the community, support grassroots conservation groups and advocate for greater environmental protection. As word spread of this group, many more of Steve’s old animal keepers put their hand up to help in any way that they could, thus began ‘Bob’s Army’. “Bob’s Army grew overnight and now consists of over 200 people,” says Brett Mostyn who started this group with the assistance of some of the old Zoo crew. All of these people are inspired by the time that they spent working with Bob and Steve and are keen to continue the Irwin conservation legacy. “Bob has been operating as a bit of a lone voice for wildlife protection for so long so we’ve come together to support him. “With people-power, we hope to raise funds to continue Bob’s work and legacy inspiring people to protect our environment and the countless incredible animals that inhabit it. “Our vision is to host a series of public events throughout Queensland and around Australia to raise much-needed funds to give a louder voice to Bob’s work.” On Saturday, November 5 the first Bob’s Army event will kick-off with Bobstock - a conservation themed rock music festival. Get your ticket, dust off your party boots and come along to meet the Bob’s Army team, unique Australian wildlife, and fantastic local music artists. This event is being held at The Shed at Aussie World with gates opening at 5.00pm. Pre-purchase discounted tickets by logging onto www. bobstockrock.eventbrite.com.au, or pay at the gate on the day. Food and drinks are available at the venue and 100% of proceeds from ticket sales will go straight to wildlife conservation through a donation to the Bob Irwin Wildlife & Conservation Foundation Inc. Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Aussie battlers Casuarinas, colloquially known as she-oaks, may not be the most beautiful trees in the world, but they are key components of Australia’s natural ecosystems. Without them, many extreme habitats would be devoid of trees. She-oaks dominate, for example, in sandy salty coastal areas, on sites with rocky shallow soils, on swampy land and in salt lands. The roots bind soils, reducing erosion, and fix nitrogen, allowing growth in soils lacking in nutrients. Unrelated to any other plant group, these ancient plants have leaves so narrow that you need a microscope to see that they are actually leaves. Each needle comprises about one hundred tiny, modified leaves stuck onto a series of internodes. The name Casuarina was derived from ‘cassowary’, referring to this fine foliage which looks like feathers. This adaptation reduces the loss of water during gaseous exchange. In addition, the needles drop continuously, forming a highly nutritious mulch which further protects the tree from water loss. She-oaks produce small hard cones full of tiny seeds. Black Cockatoos, including the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo, feed almost exclusively on the cones. Finches and lorikeets prefer the small seeds. Small seedlings feed kangaroos, while the nectar from the flowers is fodder for bees, wasps, and birds. The trees are popular nesting sites for Willie Wagtails, Pee Wees and Butcher Birds. Glasshouse Mountains National Park is home to a number of different species of she-oak, including the Mt Beerwah she-oak, and the endangered Mt Emu she-oak (pictured), for which a national recovery plan is in place. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council
Council plans for future growth - I am excited
to welcome the release of the draft South East Queensland Regional Plan, which acknowledges council’s extensive planning for population growth. Following strong and consistent advocacy by council, the draft plan identifies Beerwah East in the Urban Footprint, a preferred location for long term growth. The draft plan also provides growth for other Division 1 townships such as Glass House Mountains and Landsborough, recognising their suitability for urban growth given they are located on the North Coast Rail Line transport corridor. View the draft plan online at www.qld.gov.au/shapingseq Remembrance Day Service - I hope you can all make it to one of the region’s Remembrance Day services, I’ll be attending the Beerwah and District RSL service. I was very pleased to have been asked again to be a part of the day, it is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge all who have served. I would like to invite all residents to join me to reflect and to remember the sacrifices of our service men and women at the Beerwah Remembrance Day service, November 11. A service will also be held by the Peachester History Committee at the Peachester Cemetery from 10.00am, followed by lunch at the Peachester Hall.
Landsborough and District Historical Society AGM - The Landsborough and District Historical
Society have accomplished a great deal over the past year, and I would like to acknowledge their efforts and commitment. With thousands of hours of personal time devoted to improving community outcomes, these amazing volunteers deserve our thanks for the work they have done over the past year and for their continuing commitment to the year ahead. The accomplishments for the year included; four new mobile display banners, grants to purchase new visitor chairs, soon to be released new education kits, participation in heritage networking group’s and much more. QCWA Spring Fair - Don’t forget this Saturday’s Spring Fair on the Beerwah Tower Green from 10.00am – 3.00pm. The day is shaping up to be a superb celebration for our local community. There will be local schools participating, local community groups and the regular and super talented local artisan stalls. There will be school performances and live music under the towers, kite displays and a colouring-in competition. Council’s Parks and Gardens staff will be in attendance from 10.00am to provide advice and answer any questions relating to arboriculture – they will also be giving out free plants / shrubs. Local residents are urged to come down and support the fair and pick up a free plant! See you there!

Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra Landsborough Overpass - I have received many phone calls from Landsborough residents and business owners regarding the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade Project, and in particular the possibility of replacing the Caloundra Street level crossing in Landsborough, with a road over rail solution. They are concerned about mixed messages given over the upgrade, namely project officers stating it’s merely a concept, yet some residents have received formal notices, stating their property is likely to be resumed. I have met with a number of locals and will hold a formal meeting regarding this. I have further sought an urgent meeting with Departmental officers to obtain a full briefing of the project and ensure community views are well understood and will keep you updated. Importantly, I don’t want to see the disastrous outcome that arose at Beerwah when poor planning and not listening were hallmarks of the decision. Public consultation is open until Monday, October 31. To view the project online visit http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name/B/ Beerburrum-to-Nambour-Rail-Upgrade-Project Grand vision or short-sightedness? - The State Government have released the draft South East Queensland Regional Plan which directly impacts the Sunshine Coast. In it, they have identified Beerwah East as a Major Development Area to provide a new community of 15,000 homes in the short-term and Halls Creek included as a potential future growth area in the long-term. My concern is that between Beerwah East and Caloundra South that means up to an extra 80,000 local residents will be pouring onto our roads – Steve Irwin Way, Roys Road, the Bruce Highway and Caloundra Road. Have they even been considered? Upgrading Caloundra Road and fast-tracking the Bells Creek Arterial is now vital and both Council and the State need to get it right when considering infrastructure issues with these developments. If you share these thoughts, then sign the Action on Caloundra Road petition online via Qld E Petitions. You can also provide feedback to the SEQRP via http://www.dilgp.qld. gov.au/planning/regional-planning/south-eastqueensland-regional-plan.html Domestic Violence in our community - In Parliament, recently I spoke in relation to the Domestic and Family Violence Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill, of which I am a representative of the Parliamentary Committee charged with investigating the Bill. In Caloundra we have the Zonta Club of Caloundra, which is conducting the RISE project (Restart in a Safe Environment) to build a local refuge. Land has been donated and they have raised all but $90,000 to commence the build. You Said It Scientific enquiry – what to believe?
In Gerry Muller's recent letter (GC&M News October 19) he suggests that only peer reviewed scientific studies have validity and the views of retired scientists and academics are not worthy of consideration. He was challenging the worth of studies cited by Richard Giles in a previous letter regarding hazards associated with microwave exposure. I would suggest that a key consideration is what is the source of funding for a given study? Unfortunately even governments can have agendas and expectations subtly placed upon researchers under their employ. Within academia there can also be bias once a 'consensus view' has been reached where it can be difficult for an individual scientist to challenge the entrenched paradigm. Retired academics surely have useful if not valuable insights with a lifetime of experience behind them, and while I acknowledge it may be controversial to say this, they are not on any payroll. And realistically, positions taken in peer viewed studies can be over-turned as readily as any scientific beliefs. Our understanding of physics and the physical universe has gradually changed over time with new observations and insights. A few decades ago, it was believed there were no magnetic fields in space and that Jupiter and Saturn were cold and inactive, since the early history of our solar system. Those views have changed with new information. While our institutions still tell us that all humans were hunter-gatherers living in a form of stone age until 10,000 years ago, it is a view likely to change, perhaps in the near future. (There are some interesting examples around the world of quite sophisticated architecture inundated by

rising sea levels as much as 15,000 years ago. A large pyramid currently being excavated in West Java is believed to be over 20,000 years old). Scientific inquiry requires an open mind. And science itself can be fallible and prone to change. So, it remains curious how some people treat science today as if it is all knowing and allseeing, it isn't. And as any good scientist will tell you, at least in private, the world remains full of mystery. Jon Woodlands, Cambroon
Rain forest walk
The world ceases to exist as you enter the rainforest, your ears, eyes and nose spring to life. Your senses take over as you begin your walk in the forest. Birds are singing, animals eating, the trees are talking as they sway in the light breeze. A Pademelon is standing erect; she has heard you and is now smelling you. Watch and wait, silence is golden now, stillness and patience is rewarded as she goes back to eating and a baby Pademelon comes out. Tall trees reaching for the sun, drop their leaves like raindrops around you. Tree trunks speak to us of their struggle to survive. On their trunks is the intricate pattern of vines crisscrossing. Your eyes and ears are now fully aware of the stunning beauty around you. Eyes begin to look and seek, ears begin to search and hear for the bird calls and the myriad of sounds of a forest awake. Your nose begins to clear and smells of things you can hardly define, fill it. Most of all our hearts soar at the wonder of mother nature and we should thank her profusely for giving this to us. To make us aware of nature,
Visibility concerns at the intersection of Landsborough-Maleny Road and Maleny-Montville Road works Are you sick of the grass and weeds on the median strip at the intersection of Landsborough-Maleny Road and MalenyMontville Road? Well, so is Andrew Powell MP, Member for Glass House. After regular complaints to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) – both for aesthetic and safety reasons – Andrew is pleased to report they’ve finally listened. TMR now believe that a safer option would be to fill the centre median with concrete thus eliminating the unsightly weeds and any
visibility concerns. Mr Powell said the are scheduled to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting and that he will be making sure they are of a standard that is welcoming to locals and tourists alike.

3 mistakes to avoid when investing in property Investing in property can reap massive rewards – do it right and you could be living dreams of early retirement. In fact, CoreLogic’s Pain and Gain report reveals that over 92.1 per cent of people who sold during Q1 2016 made a profit, at an average of $239,855 per sale. On the flip-side, if you do it wrong and you could be in for some financial difficulties that may affect your ability to repay your investment home loan and put all of your savings at risk. To help ensure you’re in the former group, read on to discover three of the most common mistakes that fledgling investors make when buying property. Australia is an extremely exciting and emotional experience. Because of this, it’s easy to get overrun by excitement and make poor decisions that may jeopardise the profitability of your investment. Instead, it’s absolutely essential that you approach the decision with a level head, buying based on a property’s potential to make a profit rather than other emotional factors. To buy logically, not emotionally, you must do plenty of research on the property and the market, in order to forecast the future of your investment. Not doing your homework In order to ensure that an investment will be profitable you must use all information available to you to inform your decision. This will include looking at property
price trends in the wider area, and specific suburbs, as well as carrying out both a pest and building inspection. Doing your research will help to ensure your investment is solid. For example using the NAB’s 2016 winter housing report, we can see that units in Brisbane are forecasted to decrease in value by 1.8 per cent by 2017. Houses in the same area are expected to increase in value by 1.9 per cent during the same period, making them the smarter investment. Simple insights like this can be the difference between success and failure. Not organising your finances Poorly organised finances and unsuitable loan products will cause you plenty of stress and might deplete the profits of

Music Today
with Dr Michael Whiticker
The musical spirit Over the coming months I’d like to introduce you to what might be new ways of considering music and perhaps in doing that, I can unlock the potential power of it for you and its ability to enhance your life. Let’s begin by expanding our notion of what music is. As a composer I was taught that music is ‘organised sound in time’. That always begged the question for me of who might be doing that organising, as I found very early on that some of my most powerful musical experience occurred in nature. You too might have noted similar experiences when confronting the power of a roaring waterfall or a thunderclap or the quiet beauty of a soft wind rustling a bamboo grove. It confirmed for me the universe as the ultimate creator! But we don’t need to wait for something attention grabbing to appear before becoming more ‘tuned’ to this wonder. We can simply go out into nature and create our own ‘piece’ from what is going on around us. Take your time, find a comfortable seat and focus on the sound surrounding you. Develop your skill at filtering the array of sounds you are exposed to the moment you open your ears. Let things go that don’t add to your nature symphony and bring in or amplify what you want to include in your piece. Consider the notion that there are vibrations around us that most of the time Endeavour we are not evenGreen sensitive to. WhyPrawns aren’t we able to more easily tune into $18.99kg Cooked Endeavour this? It could be thatPrawns although there are prominent frequencies ringing all $20.99kg about, they are simply not resonating with us. Perhaps in another location however we will be struck with musical inspiration? Try it for yourself. I spoke to a fellow composer who said while on a road trip exploring national parks, he woke in the bush one morning and found the dawn chorus was erupting in B major, and as far as he was concerned the whole valley began to vibrate clearly in that key! And don’t think that you have to be musically trained to develop a heightened awareness of the sounds around you. I think it comes down to developing the musical imagination – let that go wild and the possibilities are endless.

Cappriccio's
We recently asked some friends if they’d like to head along to Cappriccio’s at Maleny for dinner. As we arrived a little early, and the weather was lovely, we thought we’d sit outside on the boardwalk for a pre-dinner wine. It is a great spot to unwind and look down onto the river. As it was still daylight we thought while we were waiting we might try our luck at Platypus spotting; we were pleasantly surprised to see two Platypus at different ends of the river and then a turtle swam past, popped their head up, and continued on their way. Once the show was over, our friends arrived and we were down to the serious business of dinner. We had warned them that while we like to enjoy our night out, that we were still working and there were rules to follow. Yes, everyone has to order a different meal (we like to keep the photos interesting) and it is great to try as many things on the menu as possible.
Brownie likes his pizza and while it was definitely not the first time he has ordered pizza at Cappriccios (he’s happy to work his way through the 20 different pizza toppings on offer) he went with the Mediterranean Chicken. It included tomato, cheese, marinated chicken, shallots, capsicum, garlic and pine nuts, which got the thumbs up; there was definitely no leftovers to take home for lunch! Judy and Ken went for a little healthier options, served with huge sides of crunchy, fresh traditional Italian side salad which they loved. Judy likes her fish and she really enjoyed her Pesce alla Milanese Fillets of fish marinated in Cappriccios special marinade, and pan-fried in a coating of seasoned breadcrumbs.
Ken went for the Chicken choosing Pollo alla Marsala and enjoyed the richness and flavours created from the pan frying in butter and masala. I can claim a slither of Italian heritage with a great great grandmother who was half Italian, so feel that I do need to have pasta as regularly as possible. I chose the Chicken Cacciatore which combines tender chicken breast pieces cooked in tomato, garlic and onion sauce, with mushroom and black olives and is served with fettucine. I think I have now found my favourite meal and am not sure that I will ever be able to try anything else on the menu unless we start going out for entrees and desserts only! As the nights start to warm up I imagine the outdoor dining will be at a premium – so make sure you make a reservation to ensure you get a table!

A study of the unspoken rules behind the role of a servant in an affluent Brazilian household is the theme of The Second Mother, to be screened by the Maleny Film Society on Saturday, November 12. It is 112 minutes duration, and classified M. Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Wild Rocket @ Mistys, with screening at 7.15pm. Brazilian writer/director Anna Muylaert explores the concept of a ‘good servant’ via a lightly humorous characterisation, by Brazilian national treasure of TV, stage and screen, Regina Casé. In Portuguese with English subtitles, The Second Mother is an easy-towatch, life-affirming film about a live-in maid looking after an upper class family in Sao Paulo in order to fund the upbringing of her own daughter in the far-away north east of the country. Trusted servant Val ‘knows her place’ and the family members reward this by treating her as ‘one of the family’, though with a selective and conditional generosity which only underlines their master-servant relationship. It all runs smoothly until Val’s savvy and emancipated daughter, Jessica (who certainly does not know her place) reveals the unspoken rules of class by breaking them. Drinks available from the bar; tea and coffee stand with home-made slices. MFS members may purchase tickets in advance from the Maleny Information Centre or on-line at www.malenyfilmsociety. All welcome.

In the Garden
M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month
with Brownie
We care about our environment
Veggie Notes Beetroot
Beetroot are one of my regular go-to vegetables for the garden, as they’re easy to grow, grow all year round and can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen. From sliced on the barbecue, roasted in the oven, grated in a salad, sliced and pickled or juiced for a healthy morning tonic … they are both versatile and delicious. An added bonus is that you can eat the leaves in a salad as well. Prepare the ground a few weeks earlier by digging through compost and a handful of dolomite per square metre, as beetroot like slightly sweeter soil. Don’t use uncomposted manures as it will be too rich in nitrogen. Their seed will germinate easily, but benefits from soaking overnight in lukewarm water. Each ‘seed’ is actually a cluster of seeds, so you’ll end up more seedlings than ‘seeds’ planted. I prefer to germinate them in a shallow tray, making this by cutting the bottom 10cm off a 30cm plastic pot. Once they’re up and have developed their second lot of leaves, the seedlings cope very well with being transplanted into the garden. I plant them to a depth of about half way up their stem. This way they have some support in their early stages. Once you’ve planted the seedlings, sow your next round of seeds to be planted in a few weeks time – that way you’ll have a succession of beetroot to harvest on an ongoing basis. As they grow, don’t feed them with high nitrogen foods, as this will encourage the tops to grow rather than the swollen roots (which form the beetroot). Like all root crops, they need adequate phosphorus and potassium. Don’t allow weeds to compete with the roots, as this will reduce their growth. Use mulch around the plants to keep weeds at bay. This will also keep the soil moisture level even, as fluctuating moisture levels will result in poor beetroots (small and woody). It’s best to harvest them when they are no bigger than 10cm otherwise they are prone to split and become woody as they get larger.
Podocarpus elatus (Plum Pine) and Podocarpus spinulosa (Scrubby Pine)
There are about six species of Podocarpus found in Australia and two of these occur locally, Podocarpus elatus (Plum Pine) and Podocarpus spinulosa (Scrubby Pine). These plants are dioecious, this means there are separate male and female trees. Only the female trees produce the edible fruit. Birds love the fruit and help disperse the seeds in both species. The Plum Pine is a large tree to 30m but usually it will only reach 8 to 10m in cultivation. This plant makes a beautiful specimen tree. The Scrubby Pine is a much smaller plant and usually only reaches 2 to 3m in height. It makes a very attractive garden or container plant and will grow in both shade and sun. The fruit of both species of Podocarpus are a versatile bush tucker. The fruit can be used for making jams, desserts and sauces or just eaten fresh. They are very high in Vitamin C and antioxidants.

WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY! 24 ACRES – WALK TO MALENY
Ross Rutledge 5499 9525 or 0447 787 020
This is one aspect of renting that many landlords don’t relish and as a result it’s not uncommon to see listings labelled very firmly as ‘no pet’ homes. This might make a difference to the maintenance, but you should also consider that 63 per cent of Aussies own a pet according to the Australian Veterinary Association. There’s therefore a great opportunity to cater to any renters within this demographic by offering them something they won’t find elsewhere – like a pet door.
You’ll be amazed how far people are willing to go for their animals, so if you can stomach being a pet-friendly landlord, this may just result in higher levels of demand.

From the churches Margaret Niethe - Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Have you ever stopped to ponder or think about how good it is to live where we live? If you live in Australia, especially here on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, it’s a great place to be whether we are living on less than we would need or like, whether we are ill or struggling to understand why someone we love has a debilitating illness, or we are mourning the deep loss of a loved one. We are living in freedom, a freedom to choose how we live and how we respond to our circumstance. Imagine what it might be like to be deceived into or coerced into thinking we were being helped to make things better for ourselves, our family, or a loved one; only to discover you were trapped into a situation where you were being exploited. Sold into forced labour, street crime, or sexual slavery. Human Traffiking is the

world’s fastest growing global trade. Traffikers exploit our most vulnerable in society, women and children. Human Traffiking is about three things: Greed, Control, and Power. We as a community can only Stop this wave of growing crimes against humanity and society together. We as a community have vital parts to play. I urge us as a community to view the ‘Stop The Traffik’ website, read stories by E .Stanley Jones (missionary to China and India); Shane Claiborne (Christian Activist and Author); and Barry Parkin (Head of Sustainability for Mars Confectionary). We live in an ever changing world; we can persist for the justice of God’s kingdom for all to be free from slavery. Sport Witta Tennis
Contributed by Pauline Fraley It was a very enjoyable and challenging day of tennis against Maroochydore TTs (second on the ladder). Witta Wagtails put in a valiant effort, but Maroochydore TTs were the winners of the day. Thank you to Christine, Janet, Pauline and Sonia. The Whistlers had a forfeit win. In extremely hot conditions at Nambour, the Wagtails played against the ZTA Novas. Pauline, Annie, Sonia and a big thanks to Gerry, got the jump at the start and never look back. The score was 6-2 sets, 44-34 games. Witta Wikings went down two sets to 10 against Gympie in a tropical encounter. Everyone left happy because Gympie won, but the Wikings are a team of the best friends in tennis. The wonderful Witta Wompoos travelled to Gympie to take on Fraser Coast, and to decide which team would play in next Sunday's final. Wompoos charged in with a convincing 7 sets to 5 sets victory. Jim came off the reserves bench at the 11th hour to take out 3 sets, while Brenda who was also filling in today claimed 3 sets. Well done Wompoos and now for the finals next week against the form team Tewantin. Witta Tennis Golf Challenge Maleny Golf Club Sunday, November 13, 7.00am Tee off. Cost on the day: Witta Tennis $30.00 (includes smoko snags and a barbecue lunch). Green fees to be paid in the club house - Gold Member free and $15.00 for all others. This is a 4 ball Ambrose competition. Fun and new prizes for longest drive, nearest pin and best net round. Please RSVP to mareehooley@gmail.com or 0437 295 501. It is with sadness that we have lost one of our Tennis mates Jean Murray. Jean was a member of both Maleny and Witta Tennis Clubs and up until three years ago at the ripe age of 85 Jean was still playing social tennis. Reminiscing with her son Peter and good friend Liz McMillian, we enjoyed many of Jeans antics over the past many years, serious and friendly, as we all knew our Jean. Our condolences go to both her best friends and her family. Social tennis: Monday 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Contributed by Gail Denver In Thursday play, Kath Smith and Ken Barker 14 played Val Carbery and Helen Adams 12, while on the other lawn, Frances Harper, Ted Gardner and Vince Carbery had a game. Frances was invited to compete in the CAQ Fourth Division event at Graceville so the opportunity was taken for her to hone her skills. We wish her all the best. Sunday's play had Val 9 playing Donna Manning 4; Helen and Sarah Widin and Helen 12 v Kath 9, and Vince 26 played Nick Cram 8. A highlight of the past couple of weeks was the accomplishment of Sheralin Elston, a relative newcomer to the game of croquet. On a recent Saturday morning she made a break of six, including two peels, all without the aid of bisques (free turns). Extremely well done. Our annual Tournament commences on Thursday, November 3 and goes for four days. As well as local and Sunshine Coast players, visitors are also coming from Brisbane and the Southport Club. While division one is light on numbers, the other three divisions have the maximum eight in each. Regular association croquet coaching is held at our grounds on the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday mornings; and the Range Croquet Club welcomes new players at any time, with coaching and mallets available for beginners. Contact Vince Carbery (5494 2193) or Priscilla Vickers (5494 3555).

Just for Laughs No monkey business
A gorilla goes into a bar and orders a martini. This totally amazes the bartender, but he thinks, "what the heck, I guess I might as well make the drink." So he mixes the martini. He then walks back over to the give it to the gorilla, and the animal is holding out a $20 note. Well, now the bartender is just flabbergasted. He can't believe that a gorilla walked into this bar, ordered a martini, and then actually had $20.00 to pay for it. So, in amazement, he takes the $20.00 and walks to the cash register to make the change.
While he's standing in front of the cash register he stops for a second and thinks to himself, let me try something here and see if the gorilla notices anything. So he walks back over to the gorilla and hands him a dollar change. The gorilla doesn't say anything, he just sits there sipping the martini. After a few minutes the bartender just can't take it anymore. "You know," he says to the gorilla, "we don't get too many gorillas in here." And the gorilla says, "At $19.00 dollars a drink I'm not surprised." Contributed by Tara from Beerwah
Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 02/11/2016 SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Personal and financial developments are ready for change. The new Moon on the last day of last month follows a positive zigzag course away from the normal straight run as Venus gets together with exciting Uranus. You just have to go with the flow and it could be liberating and fun for you. A lucrative offer comes in from a friend. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The Moon starts off in your sign this week and is usually a fire cracker to activity. Hopefully you will find yourself with a delightful companion. Before the weekend, you may find yourself staying up past midnight as the Moon moves into Capricorn for the weekend. This brings your attention to banking matters and everyday financial needs. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Something may be vague or intangible now and so your information about a clear path is under a limiting condition. This may need a friend’s knowledge that could bring you a new objective. Your private life should see a charitable gesture that costs little but could create goodwill, especially in a work setting. Just be supportive now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 If there is something about money this week your heart will be in the right place, however as it is easy to be mislead from someone with more selfish interests, wait until another day or so to start seeing the bigger picture. Mars is going to give you strength moving through Aquarius and in your first sector of sociable personality.

CANCER June 22 – July 22 The planet of exceptional good luck, namely Jupiter, is very happily settled into your home and family sector until next October. Mars moves in to set off good joint financial matters and Venus will enter Capricorn to help your business or romantic partnerships. Begin counting your blessings as that will do some good now. LEO July 23 – August 22 There is an interest in real estate and perhaps it is time to see if there is a mutual agreement. As various planets, including your ruler, your Sun sign, make the most of this time especially as people are sensitive to your affections to their needs. Even with your strong confident demeanor, you may feel more drawn to spiritual reflection. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 November sees the emphasis on arranging meetings and conferences. There will be some important announcements to make. Also, this will be a month of speaking your mind freely and being firm and decisive. You will be powered up to present a potent argument and you will be a persuasive speaker or writer at this time. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 As your ruling planet Venus occupies Sagittarius you have an extra coating of charm dealing with colleges, neighbours, local connections even brothers and sisters too. From the turbulence of last month, you move into a more harmonious and socialising trend with all that working in your favour now. You know the right thing to do!

PISCES February 20 – March 20 This week will be a good time for travel and sharing important ideas with people who will be responsive. Someone that you know can be very opinionated, however they can be counted on to tell the truth and rally to your cause. The first week commences powerful promotion of your own beliefs and opinions. You see your future direction. ARIES March 21 – April 20 You may find that this week brings you into contact with some top people. See if you can push your business reputation or career interests. With Mercury, the Sun and Pluto in harmony together, this could favour influential discussions that lead to career expansion or an important business project. Have ambition to succeed. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 Last month we gave advice about the need for cooperation, conciliation and compromise. This continues until November 21. Mars enters Aquarius on November 10 so you will feel aroused by your ambitions. Besides having business finesse, you also start thinking about travel and overseas interests. This comes up strongly month’s end. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Put together a good plan for a work project. If a relationship turns serious or a partner requires attention do it with maturity, rather than a pouting face! The weekend sees ambitious Capricorn with the Moon in that sign so your interest is in money, rather than intimacy. It may be time to look for more spontaneous thrills.
