hile we might have just moved from Summer to Spring, it would be fair to say we are well and truly into the ‘Election Season’ with the countdown to the Local Government elections on March 19 building in momentum. In this week’s edition we have included the second round of interviews for the candidates of Division 1 and an article introducing Peter Robinson on (Page 6) the
fourth candidate for the Division. Of course, as part of the election process, there will also be the referendum question about whether or not the State Government terms should be extended from three to four years? We would be really keen to hear your views on that. Send them to letters@gcnews.com.au.

New member for Fisher in future Following on from the announcement from the Member for Fisher Mal Brough that he would be resigning from the Federal Government Ministry on February 13, last Friday he announced that he will not be contesting the next Federal election. Mr Brough stated that he had made his decision to resign from the ministry after speaking to the Australian Federal Police where they confirmed that their enquiries may take ‘several more months’. “I thank the people of Fisher for their support at the last election and the trust they placed in me to be their voice in Canberra,” he said. “It has been a privilege and honour to represent this generous community. “I would also like to thank the Fisher LNP membership for their continued support, encouragement and trust,” he said. Mr Brough's announcement that he will not recontest comes as no surprise to ALP candidate Bill Gissane. “As the AFP investigation is still underway, the prospect of a candidate with such an unresolved

Current member for Fisher Mal Brough problem coming into an election made Mr Brough's position untenable,” said Mr Gissane. Mr Brough’s departure will attract a Melbourne Cup field of pretenders, according to Mr Gissane, looking for an easy passage into a federal parliamentary career. “The time has come for a real change. We desperately need someone who is interested in the welfare of the citizens, not advancing their own political careers. “The people of Fisher want someone to listen to their complaints and represent their interests with vigour and purpose. They won't get that with yet another LNP hack. “I am itching to be a part of the big future that I know awaits our district, our state and our nation.”

The proposed facility is designed to provide a service to residents across rural Maleny and Balmoral Ridge and works in conjunction with the Maleny East site to provide services to rural areas to the north and east of Maleny Township. It is expected to service more than 110 properties, and extends mostly west to Avocado Lane, and also north to Gardeners Lane. A little coverage extends south just past Mountain View Road. This proposed facility works in conjunction with the approved facility at Wilkes Knob and the proposed facility at Maleny East to provide service to the rural properties east of Maleny Township. nbn Corporate Affairs Manager Kylie Lindsay said in keeping with their commitment to the Maleny community, nbn has not lodged a DA for this proposed facility, but is undertaking pre-lodgement notification. “We’re holding a pro-active, courtesy consultation with a session at the Maleny Presbyterian Church Hall on Thursday 10th March 2016 before deciding whether to lodge a DA for this proposal,” said Ms Lindsay. “A letter was hand-delivered to all 249 properties within a 1–1.5km radius of the proposed facility

Light at the end of the tunnel for sportsclub By Lea Parkes

The last two years have been a really challenging time for the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, and it is beginning to look like all the hard work is paying off, to guarantee the long-term future of the club. Following the club’s recent AGM, Club President Warren Raddatz said the incredible financial support and generosity from our community during the ‘Save our Club’ Campaign, gave the management committee the confidence last year to focus on developing and implementing an action plan that helped the club progress. "The sponsorship and support that we receive from the broader Glasshouse Mountains region is very humbling,” he said. “I wish to thank everybody who has helped us to continue providing a venue for our communities’ kids grow healthy habits though playing competitive outdoor sport." “The Club’s management committee, and affiliated sporting clubs of netball, touch football, cricket and football have been working closely too on our goal, to not just save the club, but to build a strong club with a viable future,” said Warren. “This last 12 months has seen a dramatic reduction in expenses, particularly in the areas of insurance, wages, security, water and electricity costs. “We have also returned to some of the traditions that the club was built on, when maintenance or breakdown occurred, members got their hands dirty and did the work ourselves. “We have continued to generate good income from our sporting supporters and four key events each year, Australia Day in January, a Touch Football Carnival, Hinterland Boxing’s fight night and our Rodeo. “This has been supplemented by funds generated from the use of our competitively priced function room, which has grown in popularity for weddings and parties, life celebrations and as a training / meeting room for community groups,” he said. “The bar is also opened for a number of hours each week to coincide with senior sports games being played, and with Glasshouse Country & Maleny News support, you will be able to check the Sport’s page each week in the paper to see when the club and bar will be open. “Our Cricketers have become a formidable force on the Coast, our Touch Football and Netball competitions are very strong, and our Bee Gees Football season kicks off in March with some of the most imposing squads that we've enlisted in years. “We expect that 2016 will be an exciting ride, so please come and play for, or support, your local team and be part of our future,” Warren said.

concisely. I am backed by several friends, notably my best friend (wife) Yvonne, who is well respected and far better known in our community. I attended a top London Grammar school, and entered the workforce as a rubber technologist, moved into sales, and was promoted to factory manager. Became managing director, I had 17 profitable years. Yvonne and I started our business which also went well for four increasingly difficult Thatcher years. We emigrated to join our children, and joined the ADF where we worked for 14/15 years. I held, among other positions, Financial Manager for our branch, before moving up, so appreciate the vagaries of government. I would rather spend my time on priority matters, rather than snipping ribbons and ‘Mr Nice Guy’ shots, but would visit events when possible. Many of us read the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News (January 16 edition) and wondered if the ‘extra maintenance’ article was really valid. Surely this should be part of the recognised ongoing maintenance schedule? I encourage you to email me for expanded information, with short questions on yvpete@ gmail.com. A flyer to be distributed when printed. See details on page 16.

Peter nominated as a candidate for Division 1 after GC&M News had run the feature on the other candidates in edition February 17. For balance and fairness, we’re pleased to bring his introductory contribution to the readers this week. While Division 1 covers an extensive area, it has a similar number of ratepayers to other divisions. I am of the opinion that we receive back disproportionately small amounts. What level of improvement amounts have we seen recently compared to the coastal strip? Beerwah has had a makeover, addressing problems associated with the removal of the road crossing? Perhaps the arrival of Aldi did more? As your representative, in order to represent you fully, I would undertake to relay back to you as reliably / promptly as possible, Council discussions. I would implement an email forum for yes / no input so as to know your views before voting. The more voters inputting, the more meaningful the result. Also I would promote a small committee from all across our division for valued input. We are retired and really appreciate our local ‘camaraderie’. We survive within our means. Accordingly I would pledge an amount, $150,000+ to return to community groups etc, from remuneration received. I do not profess to be a fancy speaker; however I endeavour to say my piece precisely and
Do you have a child aged two and a half to seven years whose behaviour is difficult to manage? If so, you may be interested in the Management of Young Children Program (MYCP), an initiative made possible thanks to the Glass House Coalition of State Schools. MYCP is an individual parenting skills training and support program for families experiencing difficulties with child management. The program focus is on changing old patterns of behaviour and replacing them with new, more useful patterns of interaction through a hands-on play based approach. Local families living in the Landsborough, Peachester, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum State School communities are
eligible for the program. School aged children must be enrolled at one of the identified schools. If under school age, children must reside in one of the identified state school communities. Operating on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Landsborough State School, the program runs for three to six weeks, depending on the needs of each individual family. Each session runs for approximately 45 minutes. Apart from a nominal fee of $10.00, to cover the cost of consumables, the program is offered free of charge. For further details or to register your interest please contact Andrew Graham, Guidance Officer at Landsborough State School on 5436 2777 or via email at agrah59@eq.edu.au.

Maleny Golf Club hosts inaugural Juniors Competition More than 50 budding golfers are expected to converge on Maleny Golf Club’s Scottish linksstyle course to test their skills when the club hosts its inaugural competition for juniors on Sunday, March 6 at 10.00am. The competition, involving 3-hole, 6-hole and 9-hole formats to suit various age groups and abilities, has been organised by the Glass House Mountains Zone Junior Golf Association (GHMZJGA) in conjunction with the Maleny Golf Club. GHMZJGA vice president Mr Graeme Douglass said he was expecting between 50 and 60 players to participate, including from clubs lying well outside the zone which stretches from Northlakes at Mango Hill to Pelican Waters near Caloundra. “We attract players from well beyond our geographic district and zone because we are one of the few associations to run these type of events for juniors and the only one to include a 6-hole short format for the younger players,” he said. As a result the GHMZJGA, which also works closely with schools within its zone, is considered to be one of the strongest junior golf associations in the State. “We are all about getting our children off the couch and out into the fresh air and sunshine,” Mr Douglass said. “The idea is for them to really have fun, not to take things too seriously, meet others and enjoy the day.”
Caring for the Hinterland community for over 18 yrs
Maleny golf professional Paul Stratford with members of his junior golf clinic on the first green at Maleny Golf Club Maleny Golf Club President Dr Max Whitten applauded the work being done by the GHMZJGA to foster junior involvement and said the club was particularly excited to have so many players coming to play in the club’s first junior event. “As with any sport, our juniors represent the game’s future so it’s important to give them opportunities like this to get out and have fun playing together,” Dr Whitten said. “They are our future club members and potential champions.” Maleny-based golf professional Paul Stratford, who runs after-school clinics for juniors on Wednesday afternoons at the Maleny Golf Club, said several of his students would be taking part in the 3-hole competition on Sunday. Maleny Golf Club, is located at 15 Porters Lane, Maleny, and the cost is $10.00 (pay on the day) and 3 – hole is $5.00.

New Bulldogs coach makes his mark It’s footy season again and the Beerwah Bulldogs Rugby League club are gearing up for a stellar year. This season, the top senior men’s Division 2 team is looking to take their performance to the next level and a new ‘super coach’ may be the ticket. Mark Brandon has accepted the coaching role for at least two seasons, and he’s excited about the prospects for the coming year. Living at Landsborough, locals may know Mark from his printing business Brandon Print. Sporting enthusiasts will know him as the highly talented former Brisbane first grade rugby league player and more recently the coach of the Maroochydore Swans A-Grade senior men’s team. Originating from New Zealand, Mark began his football career over there playing for the junior Kiwi’s before moving to Australia, playing first grade for Western Suburbs in Brisbane. He had a hand in a mid-70’s grand final winning team, playing with John Ribot and Greg Oliphant. “I started my coaching at the Beerwah Bulldogs 21 years ago – that was with the Under 7’s and 8’s,” Mark reminisced. “Then I spent 10 years coaching at Caboolture, eventually becoming the head coach there. “I coached teams to nine grand finals there, winning seven of them.” Mark has the recent form to possibly return the Beerwah Club to their heyday. He has spent the last five years as the head coach at Maroochydore, taking them to the grand final for
New Bulldogs coach Mark Brandon the last two seasons in a row. “There’s a great feel about the Beerwah Club and players this year,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be part of the club's revival. “We’ve been training now for the last three months and already I can see the makings of a great team.” Identifying defence as the key to this year, Mark has brought an A Grade attitude to the way the team is thinking. “I want to instil a culture of A Grade thinking and approach for the whole team,” Mark explained. “I can see that the fellas are focused and

dedicated … no other Division 2 team on the coast would have been training this hard for the last three months. “And the results are good so far. We beat a combined Maroochydore A Grade – Division 2 team 24 to 4 in a trial game the other weekend,” he said. “Our plan is to build on last season’s strong result, with the aim of being in the top four at the end of the year, taking us into the finals. From that position, we’d be aiming for a grand final win. “Using that platform, I hope to put the club back on a footing where it can re-enter the A-Grade competition in the near future.” Beerwah Bulldogs club would like to remind any young male player that there are still opportunities to join their Under-18’s team and become part of the strengthening Bulldogs outfit. Contact them on beerwahbulldogsrlfc@hotmail. com if you’re interested.
The Plug The senior’s season kicks off on Saturday, March 12 at the Beerwah Sportground, with the Under-18’s playing against Caboolture from about 2.30pm. The Division 2 Bulldogs take on Kawana at 4.00pm, followed by what promises to be a cracking A-Grade game between Caboolture and Kawana (last year’s grand final winners).

MEMBER FOR GLASS HOUSE
www.gcnews.com.au
Glasshouse locals join in Hay Runners efforts The staff at Glass House Mountains IGA are a very dedicated bunch and they love to throw their support behind a number of fundraising initiatives each year. Recently Kirstie Walker suggested they help out the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners who have a fundraising target to meet of $500,000 by the end of the month. In January this year Brendan Farrell organised the ‘Burrumbuttock Hay Run’ that saw 100 trucks full loaded with hay arrive in Illfracombe to a very appreciative bunch of farmers and their families. For their next run on April 1, Brendan has managed to enlist the support of 220 trucks with 320 trailers of donated hay from right across Australia and he is now working passionately to raise the massive sum for the fuel bill. The rest of the IGA team thought it was a great cause and the shop owners Mel and Gill Luke were happy to get behind them. Kirstie set up a display and information sign about where the funds would be going to, and as sometimes happens in life, Sue Joseph from Bassett Barks walked in to the IGA, saw the display and said … “I will have Brendan Farrell visiting on Friday – would you like me to call in and introduce him.” With a bit of quick thinking and fast planning a sausage sizzle was organised to coincide with Brendan’s visit and the impromptu event raised almost $1,500.00. Sue describes herself as a Brenden Farrell groupie after travelling in the last convoy out to
Ilfracombe, with two of her Basset Bark trucks taking part. When Sue talks about the experience you can tell just how much she appreciated being part of what she considered a spiritual experience. “It was just so emotional arriving into town and sharing the feeling at the time,” she said. What is Bowen Therapy? by Su Bernays Bowen Therapy is a holistic and multi-dimensional approach to pain relief and healing that has achieved remarkable results over the past 50 years. Bowen Technique was pioneered by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Victoria in the late 1960's. He was a 'natural healer' who began treating people for their various ailments with effective and fast results. He discovered that the underlying source of many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health problems could be found in the soft tissue of fascia. Fascia embraces all nerves, bones, arteries, veins and muscles. Fascial dysfunction can affect every structure, muscle, nerve and organ in the body with nerve compression, muscle shortening, skeletal and organ displacement as typical examples. A treatment consists of small firm moves each at a specific site on the body. The Bowen Therapist makes firm cross-fibre moves over a muscle, tendon or ligament. This cross-fibre muscle release technique using Deep Fascial Kenetics Bowen can bring relief after a full on gym, gardening or physical training session. Bowen is effective, with substantial relief frequently attained after the first session. In most cases, only two or three treatments are required one week apart.

Noel with grandson Reece Last week we were contacted by former Glass House Mountains local Rhys Reynolds to advise sadly that his 84-year-old grandfather Noel Reynolds had passed away on Wednesday, February 17 following a lengthy stay in hospital. Noel grew up in regional Queensland and began his working life droving cattle from station to station, it was during this time that he met and married his wife Margaret. During their 60 year marriage they produced four children, Jenny, Donna, Mary and Charlie and

Rhys said when his grandparents relocated to Glass House Mountains it was the country change they wanted. “Moving from Redcliffe, this just seemed to be the right choice for them and it was always the home they would retire and live out the rest of their life in," he said. Noel and his wife Margaret may have been retired, but they were no doubt kept busy caring for their grandson Rhys who lived with them for 21 years, and welcome two ‘adopted grandchildren’ to the mix – Georgina and Elizabeth Daniels. Most afternoons after school, they would look after the two girls. Glasshouse Country Menshed representatives, President Bob McLean and Neil Glover with Mayor Mark Jamieson (centre) Representatives of Sunshine Coast Men’s Sheds met last Wednesday for a 'Cluster' seminar. Hosted by Buderim Men’s Shed, the seminar was officially opened by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson. Mayor Jamieson commented on the extraordinary growth of Men’s Sheds throughout the Sunshine Coast, congratulating delegates on their success in providing an environment of mateship aimed at the membership's well-being. The Mayor is also contemplating becoming a Shed member at some point in the future. The seminar was also addressed by Council Liaison Officers Cindi Coinix and Cheryl Pattison, who gave expert advice on how Men’s Sheds and council can work together to achieve positive growth. Dr Jane Taylor of the University of the Sunshine Coast, presented details of a study on the community benefits of Men’s Sheds. Dr Taylor said that men's involvement with the Sheds resulted in substantial medical cost savings for both State and Federal Governments. All facets of the seminar were relating to men’s health and how The Men's Shed movement is contributing to this. To find out more drop into the Glasshouse Country Menshed at 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah on a Wednesday morning between 8.30am – 12.30pm or phone Bob on 0427 606 240.

Walk without pain If your feet are unhappy, you are most likely to feel unhappy too … An injured foot needs time to rest, however the job of the foot means they do not get to take the day off for rest! Every step you take on an injured foot can lead to other compensating injuries – even travelling into the knee, hip and lower back. Stepping Out Podiatry love feet. We help feet get better every day, which makes your feet happy and makes you smile again! The three major foot pain causes are: 1. Lack of cushioning (walking or standing on hard surfaces) 2. Lack of support (wearing ‘old’ shoes, wearing shoes with no support, lack of arch support) 3. Foot injury (the tendons and muscles of the foot become injured and they are made to

The heel is made to absorb the shock of the ground and to provide an anchor point for many muscles and tendons of the leg and the arch of the foot. The three major heel pain causes are: • Lack of cushioning (fat pad deterioration over the heel bone) • Achilles strain (the tendon at the back of the heel pulling on the heel bone causing pain and inflammation) • Arch strain (the tendon and muscles of the arch pulling on the heel bone causing pain and inflammation) Stepping Out Podiatry will let you know what you need to do for simple and effective treatment.

New gig gear for Musos Club
By Sonia Clark Since kicking off the start of the year at their new venue, the Beerwah Hotel, Glasshouse Musos Club is going from strength to strength. Running every Tuesday night from 7.00pm to 10.00pm, the weekly event is a fantastic platform for all performers. Everyone is welcome, from seasoned veterans to beginners, wanting to dip their toes into the musical arena. Each week features an array of great local talent. The setup is relaxed and encouraging and musicians can perform either solo or take advantage of the musical support of others to compliment their set. Backup is easily available if desired, such as accompanying bass or percussion. Don’t be shy - especially if you are a newbie or newly emerging talent. Come along and support your local music scene and be part of a fantastic group of music lovers. There are plenty of people to offer encouragement and support. Recently the club successfully applied for a funding grant through the Government Gambling Fund to buy new front of house speakers and amps. These have now been purchased and their recent debut has produced a beautifully smooth and clear sound. The new setup will provide a great quality sound system that can also be used for professional gigs and will further enhance the performance capabilities of the musicians - as well as providing a superior listening experience for audience members to enjoy.www.glasshousemusos.com.au http://www.facebook.com/groups/musosclub/

Call out for support!
Contributed by Chris Bell (Chaplaincy Committee Secretary) Beerwah High School has had a chaplain for 22 years. This service started small but quickly became a key part of the school support team; it has been running five days a week for the last 11 years. The role of chaplain in a state school is to provide support to students, staff and families through one-on-one pastoral care, group activities and camps. Beerwah High Principal Glen Rob inson with P&C Chaplain Mike Turner President Coralie Lillecrapp and Cha plain Mike receives great support Turner for his work at the school, and special thanks goes to the school P&C who donated $10,000 to chaplaincy in 2015 - this has been a huge help. Unfortunately in February, we did have a deficit of $3,592. This is usually the case early in the year. We want to thank all those who donate to the High School Chaplaincy Service and ask for your continued support again this year through either direct donations or your attendance at our various fundraising events throughout the year. Beerwah High does receive a Grant from the State Government, but as this covers just under two days per week, we still need to raise many more thousands of dollars to support a five day per week service. Mr or Mrs ‘Anonymous’ lifted the spirits of the Chaplaincy Committee in January with a donation of $2,000. Our first fundraiser for the year is our Bowls Day at 'Club Glasshouse' on Sunday, April 17. Just $25.00 per person includes your bowls game and lunch - so even if you have never played before - get some friends together (four per team) and dress in costume if you wish (it all adds to the fun). To book please contact Glenda McSwain on 5439 0408 or email glenda. mcswain@iinet.net.au. The Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy Golf Classic is on again at the 'Beerwah Golf Club' on Friday, June 17. This is a big fundraising event for the chaplaincies in our local state schools from Beerburrum to Landsborough and a great opportunity for businesses, families and groups of mates to have an enjoyable afternoon of golf while supporting a good cause. For information about entering a team or to find out about sponsoring a hole, please contact Andrew Pearce on 0410 616 982 or email andrew@blissfulbellies.com.au Thank you all again for your continued support this year.

New dental prothetist in town Brian Stuart-Nairne is your dental prosthetist at Beerwah. A Hinterland local, he and his family have lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 40 years. Highly experienced, Brian has been practising dental prosthetics on the Coast for over 35 years and is a qualified BPS provider which is the most advanced denture system available today. He also brings over 30 years experience in implant dentistry to the practice. Interestingly, people may not be aware that dentures have been made in various forms for many thousands of years. Today’s dentures have evolved into a successful dental device for replacing missing teeth. Dentures are vastly improved from their early cousins and today we have new state of the art techniques for impression taking, new materials for denture construction and recently discovered chewing patterns that, when applied to denture construction gives better function and comfort for full denture wearers. The Beerwah Denture Clinic provides the latest, most advanced dentures available today. They also provide both metal and plastic partial dentures including hidden clasps, mouthguards, relines and fast repairs. For client convenience, they can offer relines in half a day and one hour repairs if required. Some full dentures, especially full lower dentures may cause great discomfort and very poor chewing ability due to bone loss over time. This bone loss results in severe denture instability and poor function and increasing discomfort. The solution is to place two implants and retainers and the denture clips to these. The denture can still be removed for cleaning but is reassuringly stable during daily function. This economical implant process is a relatively painless procedure and can be performed in Beerwah to provide vastly improved comfort and function for the denture wearer. For those wanting to say goodbye to removable dentures—fully fixed appliances are available. Brian is part of an experienced team that can
Isobelle Payton and Dental Prothetist Brian Stuart-Nairne offer fixed implant retained appliances that can do away with dentures completely! This option usually suits those who have suffered advanced bone loss, find wearing a denture difficult to tolerate or just want want to get rid of their dentures forever. An additional advantage is that it also leaves the roof of the mouth uncovered to allow feeling temperature and sensing taste better. Their new clinic at Beerwah is fitted with the latest equipment and an in-house dental laboratory to provide you with the best available dental care in the shortest possible time. They can repair broken dentures in one hour and reline dentures in only half a day. They are a provider to DVA, private health funds and conveniently offer Hicaps for immediate refund on health fund rebates. The cause of the pain with Adjust to Life Chiropractic There are many causes of pain and discomfort, which is why there are many types of health professionals. For tight muscles, we need massage. For weak muscles, we need physio. And for spinal restrictions, we need chiropractic. One therapy is no better than the other – you just need the right therapy for the right condition. Otherwise you're treating the symptom, not the problem, so it comes back again and again. There are a few tell-tale signs that spinal subluxation may be the cause of your discomfort. Because the spine surrounds and protects your spinal cord and nerves, you'll often experience discomfort in the spine plus symptoms in the surrounding areas. People suffering from neck subluxation often report neck pain and stiffness, headaches and arm problems such as numbness, pins and needles or shoulder pain. Mid back subluxations cause a pinch between the shoulder blades, and often reflux or indigestion. Lower back subluxations can cause pain, stiffness, leg problems and bowel problems. If this sounds like you, we'd be happy to help! 5494 0499

Still Stompin' – for a healthy body, heart and mind For nearly two years Julie Allen has been teaching her unique funky dance aerobics class on a Wednesday afternoon in Maleny, and her students have enjoyed it so much that they convinced her to add another weekly class to her schedule. With some of the students travelling from Beerwah to attend, Julie has decided that beginning from next Tuesday, March 8, she will be running a 10.30am class at the Landsborough Hall … and she is really looking forward to sharing in the fun and success of her students. “It has been great to see the strong bond that has developed in the Maleny group and the number of firm friendships that have been made during the classes,” Julie said. One of the ladies who has attended every class since we have started has summed up the

experience by saying … “I just don’t know what I would do without this class.” Julie said it isn’t just about doing exercise but about coming along, having fun, having those good endorphins kick in and then walking out the door with a smile on your dial. A friend of Julie once shared some very wise words that have stuck with her. "You don’t stop dancing because you grow old … you grow old because you stop dancing!" This philosophy is clearly part of Julie’s approach to the classes. With all ages welcome, she really likes to encourage older clients, both ladies and gents, to come along and give it a go. “I get plenty of wonderful feedback on the music I use. I like to mix it up and include everything from really contemporary tunes right through to Elvis singing Jailhouse Rock,” she said.

New students who join our group find the atmosphere is very welcoming, and Julie is keen to reinforce that the classes are definitely not a “glam Lorna Jayne style group.” Clothing is all about practicality and comfort. Within the 45 minute classes, Julie offers high and low intensity in a friendly non-judgmental environment, so that participants can work at their own level and feel really comfortable with what they are achieving. “At Still Stompin’ my fun approach and great environment combined with consistent attendance and commitment will have participants seeing great improvements in their overall wellbeing. “If anyone would like to find out more please give me a call and I can answer any of your concerns phone 0401 037 593.” Be brave and keep on stompin!

Local Government Election 2016 - Know Your Candidate for Division 1 This week we asked the Division 1 candidates what is one issue from Glass House and from Peachester that concerns them and what would they do about it if elected.

Glass House The single biggest issue that has been identified in my seven weeks of doorknocking residents has been the lack of a strong advocacy for the regional locations within Division 1. Residents are expressing disappointment that country towns such as Glass House have been forgotten in favour of development on the eastern side of the highway, particularly with regard to roads and services. With my successful experience in business management over 20+ years, I will be a strong and successful voice for small business and residents alike. This will result in: completion of road, bike and pedestrian services as well as reviewing existing approvals for road usage by large construction vehicle traffic through the centre of town; fast tracking of the duplication of the rail line; improved public transport services; and increasing outcomes for tourism based visitation. Peachester Generally residents are similar to Glass House and are expressing frustration that an explosion of development in coastal regions of the division has resulted in Peachester generally missing out. Communication services of NBN and internet has been a topic of some concern. Having a successful track record in business leadership and change management, I will continue to communicate with, and listen to, residents and businesses in Peachester including the introduction and maintenance of monthly meetings in Peachester and Glass House to ensure that I retain clarity of community expectation. My participation in developing the Sunshine Coast region will bring substantial improvement in services for Peachester. 1. What township do you live in? Golden Beach. My business, Driftwoods Unique Gifts, is in Palmview. 2. Are you a member of a political party or organisation? If so, which one? I joined Family First as a member three years ago. I do not subscribe to party politics in local government. 3. Will you be directing preferences to other candidates on your how to vote cards? Yes, I will suggest a second preference on how to vote.
Glass House Long term, the biggest challenge for Glass House Mountains is the design of the town. We've got a haulage route that continually brings large noisy trucks right through the middle of town, and the roads, rail and pathways, divide the town into a collection of hard-to-get-to areas. Glass House has fantastic country character and it deserves better. Other levels of government don't want to discuss things like shifting the haulage route because it raises expectations. However, I have worked on this with experienced locals and council traffic engineers, and it can be done. It requires money and timing, and we won't get either right unless we work towards a plan. Next term, I will work with the Glass House community to create a long-term plan for the town and start to make it happen. Short term, I have set up some smaller improvements to the town design, like upgrading the station's bus stop and turnaround, and significantly expanding the pathway network to the new district park, our remarkable mountains and the inter-town link to Beerwah. Peachester The big issue for Peachester is protecting the country village lifestyle that its residents are there for. This means making sure any development matches the character of the town. We can't necessarily stop everything, but I have opposed higher density zoning, and I continually argue in planning meetings that rural character, visual amenity and environmental considerations should be given greater weight in assessing Peachester development applications, such as on the recent road closure and tower issue. Part of protecting Peachester's lifestyle is also supporting its general store / rest stop, community facilities and dedicated local groups that are its backbone: such as the hall committee, historical society, and P&C etc. I enjoy working with these groups and I will certainly continue to support them. 1. What township do you live in? Beerwah 2. Are you a member of a political party or organisation? If so, which one? No 3. Will you be directing preferences to other candidates on your how to vote cards? No

Glass House I live in Glass House, and apart from minor issues, like why do we pay transport levy on our rates when no transport is available, and why do we keep paying more for water charges. Another small point, since (around the time of) the last local elections, as an age pensioner, the Unitywater access charge went up from $ 50.72 per annum to over $120.92 – approximately 140% rise. Pension rebate went up from $26.00 to $30.00 – a rise of around 15%. So the access charge was almost 10 times as much. Perhaps not a lot, a bit over $1.00 a week. So just another small erosion of the pension. Peachester Reading the questions asked of Division 1 candidates by Glasshouse and Maleny News, only serves to illustrate the minimal information that I have read about our issues. Apart from being aware of Peachester Markets and some more general local concerns regards NBN towers, I really have not been made aware of any real Peachester issues. This unfortunately holds good for most of Division 1. While I do not feel happy about this, it is a fact. This is a large part of my consideration to stand as a local candidate. We need more transparent leadership; hence my ambition to set up a Division 1 ‘Committee’ to receive ratepayers views, and vote accordingly. 1. What township do you live in? Glass House 2. Are you a member of a political party or organisation? If so, which one? I am a member of MAP, Mature Age Party. I do not and will not receive anything from them. 3. Will you be directing preferences to other candidates on your how to vote cards? As pensioner funds are limited, I could not run to paying for how to vote cards, but simply a flyer. 16

Glass House Town Plan. In particular, Glass House township has become a small constrained island within the council plan. This has resulted in the near total lack of scope for more small businesses within the township boundary. The population growth in the Glasshouse area has seen a significant increase with a resultant increase in housing, but a lack of facilities such as shopping centres and small businesses, to match this growth. There is a distinct lack of provision for more shops and services within the township plan and this needs to be addressed. Whilst the township plan is a work in progress, and for the most part improvements are made each time it is addressed, there are still some significant anomalies that need further examination. Some of these issues relate to the SEQRP and I will be strongly advocating for the necessary changes in this plan. I would ensure Council looks at these issues and addresses these at the appropriate level to ensure sensible results for our local communities. Peachester NBN. Whilst there is plenty of debate for and against the NBN transmission towers, I believe most people simply want to see these done and therefore have access to the broadband network. There are still some residents that do not have any broadband or mobile phone access and this will be the only way they will effectively receive these services. It is therefore critically important that the towers are located in practical locations that meet technical requirements in discussing with the local community. I would strongly advocate that the mobile phone telcos are able to use the same towers to improve mobile reception issues. There are numerous blackspot areas that can be resolved if this initiative were to be implemented. 1. What township do you live in? Officially Peachester, but practically Beerwah 2. Are you a member of a political party or organisation? If so, which one? Yes, I am an LNP member. I must point out that am not endorsed or directed by the party in any way. It has provided me with some exposure and experience with the political process. I get nothing beyond some moral support. 3. Will you be directing preferences to other candidates on your how to vote cards? Yes www.gcnews.com.au

State Member for Caloundra Fabulous, flourishing and has turned forty!
Caloundra’s historic and iconic Arts Centre officially celebrated its 40th year anniversary on February 19. The vibrant event honoured the visionaries who sought to stimulate public interest in cultural activities and foster artistic talent. Painters, potters, quilters, embroiders, lace makers, scrappers, stitchers, spinners and weavers are all welcome. There is even an Art for Scaredy Cats group for those of us who are still finding our inner ‘Pro Hart’. The Caloundra Arts Centre has become one of the region’s most successful community organisations, boasting 500 financial members, 19 life members and 18 arts and crafts groups on offer. The impetus for the Centre began as early as 1973, when an art show committee was convened to help raise money for Meals on Wheels. In 1974 the first Caloundra Arts and Craft Festival was held and from there the idea for the Art Centre was born. As patron of the Centre I firmly believe in the importance of cultivating local talent which in my opinion underpins local identity and a sense of belonging. Most of the Centre’s groups are centred on exchanging traditional skills and techniques to increase confidence and foster a willingness to experiment with contemporary ideas and practices. What a great way to retain history at the same time as embracing change. The next exhibition ‘Art in Mud and Fibre’ will be held between March 25 and 28 from 10.00am – 4.00pm at the Centre, 5 North Street Caloundra (opposite Oaks Resort). Visit their terrific website at www. caloundraartsandcrafts.org.au for more information about events; art and craft groups; and, to subscribe to their e-newsletter Art-I-Facts. If you are looking for a unique gift, visit or call the Gift Gallery on 5491 6488. The Centre is open seven days a week and well worth a visit. Congratulations to President Margaret Deakin and the Management Committee for giving Caloundra this valuable asset of which we can all be proud.

Local Heroes Grants
Five local groups or individuals have recently been announced as Round One winners of Andrew Powell’s Local Heroes Grants. Mr Powell said the grants are designed to provide a bit of a helping hand to community groups or individuals participating in local, state, national or international endeavours. “I’ve been the local MP for seven years now and I know how our community groups in particular are doing it tough. “They can’t make changes or upgrades to their facilities without funding and with so many people vying for only a few pots of money, it makes it really tough. “I know my grants will give a small but valuable injection of funds to some of these groups, and I am so pleased that I have this opportunity to help,” he said. Mr Powell’s Local Heroes Grants were announced in January and there will be five more rounds this year. Recipients for Round One: • Glass House Community Hall - to go towards their 100th birthday of the Hall celebrations • Delaneys Creek Pony Club - to assist in the operations of their tuckshop • Smart Pup for Ella, Maleny - to assist in purchasing a Smart Pup for Prep student Ella • Sarah Peters, Conondale - to attend the World Paint Horse Show • Conondale State School P & C - to renew equipment in the school tuckshop. “I did squeeze in one extra recipient this time round as it was just so hard to choose. Unfortunately no groups from the Palmwoods area submitted a nomination this round so hopefully word gets out and we have a few to choose from next time,” Mr Powell said. Closing dates for the rest of the year are Round 2 – Monday, April 11, Round 3 – Monday, June 13, Round 4 – Monday, August 15, Round 5 – Business finance made simple. Monday, October 10, and Round 6 – Monday, Business finance made simple. December 12. To apply for the grants visit Andrew’s website Business finance made simple. www.andrewpowell.com.au

You Said It Please return my bike
I am pensioner in my 70's and depend on my black Mareba mountain bike to get around Beerwah. I was recently in Emma Park, in the open space area next to Coochin creek off Caralan way talking to council staff about upcoming work in the park, when my bike was stolen. This occurred between 9.00am and 10.30am on Friday, February 26. Two adults were seen walking past the place where the bike was hidden in a tree. One was a man with two black dogs, the other a woman. Another man was also seen walking in the park. If they saw anyone take the bike I would appreciate hearing from them, the bike has a carry rack on the back and a tool bag under the seat, a bike lock and two water bottle holders, together with a pump. If you have my bike please give it back as I cannot afford another, and it is not insured, phone 5494 6278. There is a $50.00 reward to anyone whose information leads to recovery of my bike Roger Callen Beerwah
Sentimental spurs
Would the person who removed my spurs from the back of my white 4WD whilst it was parked in the Woolworths car park, please return them to the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News office, (16 Coonowin Road). No questions asked. They belonged to my late uncle and are of great sentimental value and cannot be replaced. Max Chapman Glass House Mountains
Missing Sidchrome socket set
To the person who picked up my Sidchrome socket set on the footpath on Alf's Pinch Road on Saturday, February 20 - my name is on the inside of the box and my initials are on every tool inside. The box wasn't dinted or damaged from falling off the back of someone's work truck. It had been placed there momentarily whilst doing work and forgotten about temporarily. If you look up the phone book you can find my phone number. I find these tools invaluable to work with and would really appreciate their return. If anyone notices someone with a newly acquired Sidchrome socket set in a red metal case I would appreciate a phone call. When something is found, especially with someone's name on it and not returned, they are actually stolen. This matter will be put in the hands of the police. Please phone 5494 0205. M. Schmidt Beerwah
Sad day
It was with sadness that I read the council plans for rehoming the 'ostentation' of Peacocks who live near me in Glass House Mountains. Since I moved here seven years ago, I have very much enjoyed seeing these majestic birds in the area. I love having them visit my garden, and I think their outstanding beauty really adds to our lovely town. In terms of mess, noise, and environmental issues, I think humans trump every time over our brightly feathered friends. The fact that some people want to see these 20

amazing creatures euthanised astounds me. The local peacocks are welcome to poop on my deck and eat my fruit; it would seem a small price to pay for what they bring to the neighbourhood. Several weeks ago, I went to take some photos of the chicks and the parents let me get really close and were very gentle, the chicks were rather inquisitive and came very close to me. I think it is about time some humans learned how to better share our beautiful location with other species; the peacocks may not be native to the Glass House Mountains, but neither are the majority of our human residents. Thank you IGA Mooloolah!
Mooloolah State School staff and students were delighted this month receiving a $200.00 cheque from White’s IGA Mooloolah. This money is accumulated by collecting IGA shopping dockets. Well done to all students, families and community members that have dropped off their dockets to the school office. This money will go towards the purchase of literacy resources for Years 2 - 5. This was an area of the school we identified that required more reading and comprehension resources. Mooloolah IGA, managed and co-owned by Ken Grant, have supported the school tremendously over the last year or so. We are very appreciative of their continual support and enjoy a productive partnership. I would like to encourage all community members to continue to shop at the local Mooloolah IGA and drop their shop dockets back into the Mooloolah State School. 'How the locals like it'. Pothole frustration
Why didn't we get the potholes fixed on Steve Irwin Way, then a resurface, instead of spending millions of our dollars narrowing it? This practice is becoming widespread and I believe dangerous. We build roads wide enough for cars, busses and trucks to use safely without running off the shoulders. I have travelled a lot of kilometres within Australia and this is a most bizarre practice, reducing lane size for safety! It also pushes bike riders ride in the centre lane. Dave Morgan Peachester
An open mind on climate change
At least Jon Woodlands, in his very compelling letter (GC&M News February 24) was open enough to state why he thinks the world has
been led astray over the influence of human beings on global climate change. “The big boost to global warming research began with Margaret Thatcher in 1988….’ Aside from the fact that the world met in Paris in 2015 and agreed to limit global warming to 2 degrees C (compared to pre-industrial levels) and genuine immediate concern over the state of the Antarctic ice shelf melting and exposing us to massive sea rises, there remains a staunch group who oppose the science. They implore us to, as Jon puts it, do our own independent research! What for? This is not a debate. A debate is whether we should have an increase to GST or tax law changes. In the case of manmade climate change, the caravan has already rolled through town. It is of little consequence quoting various facts and figures from pre-human existence or the sun’s warming of the planets at any particular time. They’ve been taken into account, peer reviewed, debated and settled upon. And what sort of independent research is there for the average person to undertake? The internet? There’s a thought! How about the local library? Sorry, there are times when you have to leave neuroscience to the neuroscientists and climate to the climate scientists. If this makes me a fanatic in your eyes, I’ll accept the label. Peter Gawith Peachester
Not much maintenance done
I agree with Brian Stallworthy (GC&M News February 24) the councillor in Division 1 doesn't get much maintenance done along Commissioners Flat Road in Peachester. A bridge guard rail was damaged last November in a severe storm, the council put hazard tape on it, and it’s yet to be repaired. There’s also a fallen tree still wrapped in danger tape from the same storm, most of the drains are overgrown, the road edges are only mowed one slasher width in most places, and it’s only done every couple of months. This means in between times we have to slash it so we get some sort of sight to exit the property safely. Parts of the road are barely two lanes in width, which means if you meet anything bigger than a car, good luck with not getting hit as most times the bigger vehicle is on the wrong side. I have had many near misses because people see the road as a shortcut and speed in the narrow section. Newer GPS systems show it as a shorter way through to Kilcoy and further west. Alice Wessling Peachester
In agreeance
I would like to agree with Jon Woodlands (GC&M News Febrary 24) about 'keeping an open mind' but unfortunately this is code for 'do nothing about global warming'. Jon offers sunspot cycles as a reason to think the world will soon be cooling and there are a lot of enthusiastic blogs promoting this. However there are at least four problems: 1. Sun spots have an 11 year cycle yet global temperature keeps trending up. 2. The solar cycle theory has always been an arm wave - not a calibrated physical model that can be used for forecasting. www.gcnews.com.au
3. The theory is chaotic - at first global temperatures were supposed to depend on cycle strength, then on cycle length, or maybe both or maybe throw in lunar cycles. 4. Forecasts are equally chaotic. Archibald (2006) produced a graph showing rapid steady cooling after 2008. Abdussamatov (2012) said the new ice age would begin in 2014. Recently the ice age has moved on to the next cycle in 2030. As the Red Queen might have said to Alice - 'ice yesterday, ice tomorrow but never ice today'. Jon says that Margaret Thatcher set up the Hadley Centre to distract greenies from the nuclear industry. This furphy seems to come from the 2007 BBC video 'The Great Warming Swindle'. A more charitable interpretation is that she is one of those rare politicians who had the education and experience (industrial chemistry) to appreciate the seriousness of the global warming arguments. Any enthusiasm for nuclear power would have been to break the power of the coal miners union. But this has come full circle because increasingly, greenies are winding back their opposition to nuclear power because the associated problems are looking more manageable than those associated with serious global warming. David Lowry Conondale
Need for compromise
It was with great interest having read the report on the Peacocks, after speaking to a resident prior to reading the story, it does appear there has not been consideration to the people who like the birds and they outnumber the ones who don’t significantly. I admit there should be some management of the flock and surely there should be a compromise? Even speaking to those who are pro birds would be a start, without just placing traps on the three properties who are against the birds, to plan on exterminating the flock.
As the councillor stated, find a compromise. I’m sure if I complained to council about the nuisance dogs I have to put up with keeping me awake at night and growling at me through the fence, there would not be the same heavy handed approach, the dogs be taken away to be euthanised. What next, get rid of all the introduced geckos because they leave droppings and what about us? We are not native and look at the mess we make. Wake up Australia! Paul McShea Glass House Mountains

Having always loved working with children, Ange builds on this passion to contribute her skills to providing a service that positively supports all aspects of children’s early interactions, learning and lives. Believing that everyone has the right to good quality affordable childcare, Ange feels that the business is unique in the way it offers a number of additional services and activities at very competitive fees. selection of our successful local business women in a ‘Women in Business’ feature. In our local business community we have a really high percentage of small businesses run by women, they are the driving force in the business. So we like to give many of these women the opportunity to share their stories and to give readers an insight into how they tick. In last week’s edition we featured profiles of seven local businesses, and in this week even more, as it will include additional photos from Maleny businesses. It is always a really interesting process for us putting the stories together, as we find out that while a lot of those featured have achieved so
much they can still be quite humble when telling their stories. And before we receive any backlash about when is International Men’s Day we figure that the fella’s shouldn’t mind letting the light shine on the talented bunch of women at least one day in the year! Thanks to all the ladies who have been a part of our feature over the two weeks, thanks for sharing your stories and also making our community a great place to work and live. Regards,
involvement are some of the additional activities on offer. Ange is always looking for new ways to engage with the local community. Donations to local charities, support at community events and visits to local libraries are always enjoyed by the children and help strengthen important community bonds. Ange is excited to advise that renovations to offer a further four rooms at the centre have nearly been completed and she looks forward to increasing the capacity to offering quality childcare. I studied National Parks Management years ago. I’m a Bibliophile, restore furniture, keep fit and four wheel drive through some of the more remote and wonderful areas of Australia whenever I can and ... I like people. During my previous life as the successful Export Manager for a Honey Company in New Zealand, I based my sales on being open and trustworthy. I don’t see why this should change in my new job so I’m working for an awesome and otherwise open and transparent real estate company, Raine and Horne in Beerwah. So, now I meet even more people and have the opportunity to help them sell or buy and perhaps get to know them a little better. It’s challenging.
It’s a great life. I have only been with the company for a little while but I have exceeded my expectations in selling properties already! While I negotiate between the buyer and seller – my obligations lie in achieving the best sale outcome for you … the seller. I do not compromise on quality service. Taylah Boultbee ‘Matt Fiddes Martial Arts’ franchise owner Taylah loves her work and is committed to providing an award winning children’s martial arts program to local hinterland families. Taylah first became interested in martial arts when still at high school. Discovering she had a passion and natural affinity for the discipline, she rapidly moved into grading, and after only a short period of time, was asked by her instructor if she could swim. Replying that yes she could, her instructor at the time said, “good, then I’m throwing you in the deep end,” and asked if she would be interested in filling in to teach the following week’s class. From being a popular fill-in teacher, Taylah
then progressed to being asked if she would be interested in the opportunity to set up her own school, and now three years later, Taylah is the successful franchise owner. The martial arts school specialises in children’s programs and has found particular benefit for children who have behavioural issues and require assistance with confidence, discipline and self esteem – though the programs are suited for all children from ages three and up as they help reinforce great life skills including respect and self control. Success with weight problems and food intolerances With Judy Timm Having worked with the Bio-Compatibility food intolerance test for some years, I found clients who used the test as a solution for IBS, sinus or skin conditions, were also normalising in weight over time from eliminating the foods highlighted in red on their results. When the body is dealing with food intolerances, symptoms such as mucus, pain or bloating, are signs to alert the body to go into repair mode due to inflammation these foods are creating.
Acupuncture
While this agitated state of activity is constant, our body’s intelligence prioritises what needs to be addressed first for survival, usually weight loss is at the bottom of the list. The test results will match the foods which are either compatible or not compatible with the individual. This takes the guessing out of what to eat, or what not to eat. It is not uncommon for people who experience the same discomfort to find their results are totally different. This would explain why eliminating dairy
may work for another but not for you. Once the intolerant foods are removed from the diet, the body can repair from cellular level, from this level, our organs, our systems and our wellbeing start to be restored. Now the body can address those extra kilos. Contact Judy at The Healthy Guru on 5439 0097.

Guitars at the Maleny Wood Expo Every now and then you meet someone who inspires you with the quality of their work and the passion they have for what they do. One such person is Beerburrum resident Gavin Davidson who I have known for about five years. Over this time I have seen him create the most beautiful collection of handmade guitars which will be on show at the Maleny Wood Expo on the April 30 weekend. I’ll be going to see the wood anyway, but knowing that there will be Gavin’s White Hawk guitars made of Australian timbers on show, makes the trip doubly enjoyable. Most of us look at the quality of instrument Gavin makes with some envy - they can never be as cheap as off the shelf instruments, so most of us won’t be owning one. But if you could, what sort of instrument would you like? Gavin loves to hear your ideas and gives the most in depth and thoughtful response to design proposals, and, if he thought he could help you, might just be able to build that guitar for you! On a more down to earth level, we all need our instruments maintained. Personally I have standard acoustic guitars, lapslide and baritone guitars, along with electric and bass guitars, ukulele, dulcimer and mandolin. No, I can’t play them all at the same time, but I can play them and it is always a little sad if an instrument has sat there for months untouched and then when I take it up it is no longer playable – perhaps it has buzzing frets, or the action has become too high. Guitars are made from wood and they can adapt to the humidity, string tension and wear from use, in unexpected ways. In short, string instruments need to be maintained with a service every couple of years. Gavin’s business, Glasshouse Guitar Works, looks after instruments with the sort of dedication that is enviable. (If only I could find a car mechanic like that…) He gives you an in depth analysis of your instrument’s condition in writing before undertaking the job. And - the best part for me, he comes along to the Glasshouse Musos every Tuesday night at the Beerwah Hotel (from 7.00pm – 10.00pm), so you can bring your instrument along, get some good advice for free, listen to some great music or get up and have a play. How about that for a win win! Have a wonderful, musical month!
Michael has a recording studio in Peachester and runs the Glasshouse Muso’s open mic sessions. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au
Showcasing five centuries John Coulton’s Brass Quintet will play a wide variety of music ranging from baroque to jazz, at their concert in Maleny on Sunday, March 13, 2.00pm at the Maleny Community Centre, the first in the Maleny Arts Council’s 2016 series. The program includes John Stanley’s Trumpet Voluntary played by internationally acclaimed trumpeter and leader of the ensemble John Coulton, everybody’s favourite Nessun Dorma (Puccini) and Mozart’s Ave Verum. “I love playing in ensembles but don’t get a lot of opportunity with my solo and recording work, so I formed my own, and I have brought in four really excellent and exciting musicians to create the John Coulton Brass Quintet. “Elizabeth Smith, my first music teacher who encouraged me to take up the trumpet when I was eight years old, now lives in Maleny, so this Arts Council tour was a great opportunity to catch up with her,” said John. Chris Williams also plays trumpet, and apart from appearances with many orchestras here and overseas, like the BBC Symphony, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the celebrated Queensland Pops Orchestra, has performed didgeridoo in many countries including at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Jubilee. The other members of the team are Emily Newham, French horn, Andrew Bell, tuba and Stuart Bent, trombone. In 2015 Emily was principal horn of the Queensland Youth Orchestra, and performs with the QSO and the celebrated Queensland Pops Orchestra. Andrew has not only played principal tuba and soloist in many orchestras and groups here and overseas, but also across the range of brass and percussion instruments on TV and in recordings. He is also a conductor and held the position of chief conductor with the Brisbane Philharmonic. Following the Arts Council’s tradition, patrons are invited to meet the artists on the deck after the performance. Bookings are open at trybooking.com, Maleny Information Centre and with the treasurer on 5494 2584. www.gcnews.com.au

Great eats and treats to find locally!
Vianta This month Lea and I dropped back into Vianta. As always, we enjoyed the inviting decor with its relaxed and almost ‘continental like’ charm as we savoured our skilfully made coffee. Vianta always do coffee very well, backed by friendly and attentive service. The menu looks appealing and refreshed, and this time I ordered the Avocado Jesemel ($9.90), which featured fresh avocado, poached egg, cherry tomato, red onion and hollandaise sauce. It was presented beautifully and tasted great. While we were there, Lea and I spent some time looking over the Friday night Tapas menu. Vianta are really kicking off their Friday nights, offering customers the chance to relax and unwind after the week with lush offerings of weekly live music to
complement a regularly changing Tapas menu. Friday nights are billed as ‘Vianta at Night’ and are proving to be a big local drawcard with a high calibre of live music and food to entice. While the Tapas menu has weekly variations, the staple meat dishes of pork, lamb and chicken are usually offered with a unique tweak by the chef each week. A couple of dishes have proved so popular that they are offered each week – the Citro Spiced Calamari (freshly prepared from the local seafood supplier) $16.00 x 6 - made with the chef’s secret but winning technique, and the Sweet Beet Vegetarian ($16.00 x 4) which features fourstacks of sweet potato, beetroot, avocado, cherry tomato and honeyed bean sprouts dressed in a cranberry and balsamic glaze.

Suffragette matinee and evening screening Just in time for International Women’s Day, Maleny Film Society will be screening ‘Suffragette’ on Saturday, March 5 at the Maleny Community Centre. ‘Suffragette’, from director Sarah Davron (Brick Lane) and scriptwriter Abi Morgan (Iron Lady), captures the intense emotions and physical courage of the early members of Emmeline Pankhurst’s Women’s Social and Political Union in 1912 London, when suffrage had already been granted in many places including South Australia and the Isle of Man, but not in the British Houses of Parliament. Members of the MFS may pre-book for themselves on-line or via the Maleny Information Centre. General ticket sales open at 2.30pm for the 3.00pm matinee; and at 6.00pm for the 7.15pm evening screening. Early arrival is strongly recommended. Catering of dinner by Wild Rocket @ Mistys; bar and tea/coffee stand with home-made treats. Check the website: www.malenyfilmsociety.info

In the Garden
Environment
with Brownie
OK … which of you guys did this?
Jobs for the yard in March
• Wait until the rain eases a bit before giving you gardens a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, or else it’ll just wash away and be wasted. • Now is the time to put spring flowering bulbs in the fridge veggie crisper and plant out at the end of the month. • Try not to plan any work in the backyard which needs heavy machinery or vehicles, until the soil dries and firms up. Otherwise you risk compacting the ground and churning up soggy soil – not a good practice. • White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a hessian bag around the trunk and check underneath for the damaging insects as they’ll congregate there during the day. Squash or spray them with a pyrethrum spray. • Start planting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings from mid March. Watch out for little green caterpillars, as they can destroy your seedlings overnight. • Plant strawberry runners towards the end of the month into well-mulched beds with lots of compost and manure.
Vegetables
Plant carrot, leeks, beans, cauliflower, lettuce, silver beet, spring onion, radish, capsicum, cucumber, eggplant, sweet potato, tomato, melons, pumpkin, okra, zucchini, broccoli, kale, cabbage, rocket, beetroot, garlic, celery, coriander, rosemary, fennel, shallots and parsnips.
Flowers
Plant alyssum, petunia, marigolds, sweet pea, ageratum, aurora daisy, nigella, calendula, cyclamen, delphinium, impatiens, dianthus, salvia, everlasting daisy, forget-me-not, gaillardia, foxglove, linaria, lobelia, lupin, nasturtium, polyanthus, schizanthus, iceland poppy, primula, snapdragon, cleome, strawflower, verbena, cineraria, phlox, cornflower, pansy, statice, stock and viola.

Bower of Beauty
Pandorea jasminoides If ever you need a plant to grow on a fenceline to provide a screen or to cover an arch in your garden, then Bower of Beauty is the plant for you. With its lovely dark glossy foliage and stunning flowers which bloom from late spring and all through summer, it is a local plant that adapts well to a wide range of conditions. The tubular pink flowers are crimson throated, five petalled and are a stunning feature of this vine. Placing in full sun will ensure prolific flowering. Although naturally a large creeper, regular pruning can create a compact habit, it is also slightly frost tender and copes well in dry situations rarely requiring supplementary watering.

Russell Seres wondered what sort of animal left these ‘calling cards’ behind when he posted the photo below onto the ‘Maleny and surrounds Chit-Chat’ Facebook page recently. Russell found the offending nuggets on top of a fish tank in his shed on his property at Witta and pondered if he had a very large possum living in his midst. Comments from some locals poohpoohed that notion, saying that it was more than likely a snake stool. Python pooh was the most likely suggestion. Russell was surprised with this finding, commenting that it must be a decent sized snake. “Oh, if anyone is interested … the pooh stinks,” he said. Some people use snake droppings as a possum and rodent deterrent – so maybe Russell has a sideline business in the making.
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Aliens amongst us With their eight hairy legs and multiple eyes, spiders seem alien to us and instil both fear and fascination. Evolving approximately 400 million years ago, there are more than 40,000 known spider species worldwide, and many more unnamed. In some areas, there can be more than one million spiders in half a hectare. Spiders are vital to healthy ecosystems: pollinating plants, acting as food sources for small mammals, birds and insects, and feeding on harmful insects. Spiders eat more insects than birds and bats combined. Spiders have evolved many different strategies for capturing prey, from weaving intricate webs, to ambushing prey from burrows, foliage or leaf litter. They immobilise their prey in two ways: by injecting venom and paralysing them, and/or by wrapping them in silk. Spider venom initiates the breakdown of prey tissues. Enzyme-rich stomach fluids are regurgitated over and into the prey, reducing them to a soup which is then sucked up through the spider’s tube-like mouthparts. All spiders produce silk, however not all of them make webs. Spider silk is an incredible substance, being extremely light weight and yet five times stronger than steel of the same thickness, and being able to stretch up to 30% of its length. Despite their reputation, only a few spiders in Australia are harmful to humans. White-tailed Spiders, Red-backs, Australian Tarantulas, and Mouse Spiders inflict very painful bites. Funnel-webs can be lethal, however due to the use of anti-venom, the last death from one of these was in 1980. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Fr Craig Moody - Anglican Parish of Caloundra - Glasshouse Country As I thought about what I would write this week, I reflected on the breadth of ministries undertaken by the parish family in order that the parish functions. There are many areas of activity. Approximately 30 ladies make prayer quilts for people in time of need, 60 being made in 2015. Each quilt has prayer knots from dozens of people who have prayed for the recipient, after which the quilt is blessed. Almost five dozen people visit the elderly in their homes or places of care. St Andrew’s Care organises help and small jobs for people in their homes, while there is also ministry with dozens of children, and much more that give shape to the character of the parish. In addition to these outreach activities, this extract from my report lists the tasks that are undertaken at least once each week in order that services of worship take place, worship of God being the central vocation and joy of Christian life. The following, each with only a couple of words, represent hours of service each week. The reading of Scripture in worship; the preparation and offering of intercessions; serving; being a Liturgical Assistant; cleaning the Churches; preparing and arranging flowers; washing and ironing Altar linen; preparing the vessels and

bread and wine for each service; welcoming people at the door; receiving, organising the planned giving envelopes; cleaning the brass and other metals; preparing and cleaning after morning teas; running the data projector; caring for and teaching children in worship; praying with people as needed after Church. These are some of the ministries that contribute to the character of being an Anglican Church. Taking away any one of these offerings of time and talents would lessen who we are. Central to who we are is being people of prayer. It is a joy to be a part of a faith community in which lay people have full responsibility for the intercessions, who willingly pray with people in times of need, gather for healing prayers and offer the ministry of Prayer quilts to God in prayer and blessing of those quilts. Our parish values pastoral care, not only for each other, but for others beyond our congregations.

Records tumble at GCC Secondary Swimming Carnival Contributed by Matt Beattie This year’s Glasshouse Christian College Secondary Swimming Carnival was a great success. There were some exceptional efforts from all participants and the vibrant house colours, decorated tents, and loud cheering made for an exciting atmosphere. Everyone enjoyed the novelty races, fashion by the pool parades, and the equally hilarious ‘big splash’ competition. The fun activities were peppered throughout the serious races where 32 new swimming records were set. This is more than double the records set at the 2015 carnival.
Competitionin the pool was extremely close across most age groups with some champions being decided by the smallest of margins. Students swam in either the A or B division races according to their previous nominations and trials. It was a fantastic spectacle to see the regular close finishes. Good natured rivalry was at an all-time high as the sporting houses of Ararat, Sinai and Zion fought for supremacy. The final points were much closer than anyone expected with Ararat emerging as well deserved house champions. The final points were Ararat 1137, Sinai 1101 and Zion 828. Congratulations to all students who qualified to swim at the District Carnival.
Dancing, cheering and war cries added to the excitement at the carnival. Photography by Jenny Ritson

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Paddy driving home Paddy had a few too many at a party and while driving home, he was pulled over by the Police. Noting Paddy’s erratic driving, the Police immediately breathalysed him. As they were preparing to book him, there was a terrible accident on the opposite side of the road. The Police were immediately distracted by the other incident and decided to take care of more important matters. Paddy, figuring that the Police weren't coming back to him, drove home and went to bed. He was awakened in the morning by a knock at the front door, and was greeted by two
Police. "Are you Mr Patrick Murphy?" they asked? Paddy nodded his head. "Were you pulled over at Church Street last night for driving under the influence?" Again, Paddy nervously nodded his head. "And what did you do then?" they asked. Paddy replied that he drove his car home and went to bed. "Where is your car now?" the Police enquired. Paddy told them that it was in the garage. "May we see the car?" asked the Police. Paddy answered, "sure," and opened the garage. Inside the garage was the Police squad car. Submitted by Kim, Reesville

SCORPIO October 23– November 22 The early period of March sees the emphasis in your fifth sector of your chart bringing in romance, freedom and leadership. Somehow, this month, you will strengthen the bonds of affection. Instead of being held within, it is now important to show affection to all your dear ones at this time. SAGITTARIUS November 23– December 22 This week should see you outgoing, bold and adventurous. This is because we have the assertive enthusiastic Mars coming up in your sign, making you pumped up even more. So therefore find constructive outlets to put that energy into now. Home and family matters see some drama! CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The eclipse coming up next week, sets the stage for a six month’s scenario pertaining to a new decision, commitment and relates to study or a certain skill/set learning. Good to be involved in local and community activities with your neighbours, shopkeepers, street markets and local meetups. AQUARIUS January 20– February 19 There is an exciting energy between Venus and Uranus and since your ruling planet is Uranus it gives all Aquarians a revitalised boost. A great week to hang out with progressive, creative people, and place a lucky bet that could win you lots of money! You may see some gifts coming your way.

CANCER June 22– July 22 There are two big eclipses coming up in the merry month of March, with strong effects on your sign. The first is a total solar eclipse in Pisces, so you will open your perspective up to new visions of what could be. The second denotes the chance to take new finances concerning home and career. LEO July 23 – August 22 With the emphasis being in your financial sector, the week ahead will focus you on clearing away debts and balancing your accounts. This is the time to rediscover your talents. Not only are your own income and assets involved, but other assets as well. You need to look at shared resources. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 With many planets moving through your opposite sign of Pisces, in your relationship sector, there is unbounded emotional energy. This will be caused by Jupiter helping a total solar eclipse with a six month impact range. Learn about how well your needs mesh with the needs of others now. LIBRA September 23– October 22 The end of March sees the full Moon in your sign and you are going to ride on another’s enthusiasm. Meanwhile, this week you might get that old lethargic feeling again, about doing your daily routines. You should consider the planets forcing you into a sector of rest and spiritual rejuvenation.

Week beginning 02/03/2016 PISCESFebruary 20– March 20 This is a very important month for you, for your personal development and your life direction over the next six months. This six months story line depends on what you get started now. Many planets are overflowing in your sign and it’s all about releasing the past and its wounds, healing yourself. ARIES March 21– April 20 So the merry month of March has now begun, and the emphasis will be in your sector of self-analysis. Come March 5, an enthusiastic fire sign harmony, of Mars in adventurous Sagittarius, will make you crave the outdoors, attend a competitive sport, and feel to explore all cultures. TAURUS April 21– May 21 There is a beautiful arrangement between Venus and Uranus; it can bring a revitalising break from old routines. The first total solar eclipse arrives next Wednesday and that would also be favourable to your sign. Make a point of not overdoing it, concentrate on career financial returns. GEMINI May 22– June 21 The month gets off to a fresh start with the accent on developing new business tactics. This will arrive by mingling with important people. It is best to take your responsibilities willingly. Subtle information flows with your imagination, showing great creativity and artistry now.
