NZAC Day is a busy day for us, and not just because we have so many events to attend, but because we spend our time looking at all the possible photo moments we can capture that will translate into the stories within the day. We have included a page of photos, but sadly this is just a snippet of the many stories of the day. We have tried to represent some of consistent things that happen on ANZAC Day throughout our community and the rest of the country. The young families who attend the Dawn services so early in the morning, the kids rugged up and behaving so well, and the parents proudly telling us how they come every year and the kids wouldn’t miss it. The crowds watching the parade who wave at everyone in the parade including the vintage cars that participate in the march, transporting our elder veterans and giving them a rock star greeting along the way. And most importantly the families that come together for the occasion, some who served, some who represent their fathers or grandfathers and they choose to attend together and share that special bond that unites the family. And finally, reminding ourselves of the meaning of the day and hearing the message echoed through time … Lest we forget.

ANZAC Day 99 years on

Call Leisa or Michelle

By Lea Parkes

There has already been so much coverage in the media about how next year marks 100 years since the original landing at Gallipoli. You have to wonder how our commemorations can get any bigger – when locally there is already so much interest and support at our ANZAC Day events. Every year we head along to a number of the five local events that are held each year. This year we attended an event in each of the townships which included a Dawn service at Beerwah, the service and march at Landsborough around 9.00am, followed by the march and service at Glass House at 11.15am. Even though it is officially work for us – I really enjoy going along to each of the events and seeing just how important they all are to those that attend and participate in them.

I like that each of the events have their own personal touches that make them unique and special for those that participate, the bag pipers, the last post being performed live, the poems that are read out, the songs that are sung, and the wreaths that are laid on the cenotaphs. At the Landsborough parade I overheard an out of towner say “why do they have separate events when the towns are only five minutes apart?” I guess on a practical level she might be right and I probably wondered the same thing when we first came to town. But I guess that is what tradition is all about, the continuation of marking this significant occasion, remembering those that have served their country, and a chance for the local kids to participate and understand and to one day be responsible for keeping these traditions alive.

Recently Holly has taken on an exciting new role with Integrated Family and Youth Services (IFYS) as a youth and family support worker for Reconnect. As a community development worker Holly was actively involved in a number of projects with young people which she really enjoyed. So when the opportunity came up she felt it would be good to expand her horizons and to focus her passion and skills towards assisting young people. Part of her interest in the role is about addressing local issues - including lack of transport, youth activities, services and accommodation. Holly’s new role is to support young people who are at risk of homelessness, assisting them to remain connected to family and community. With a target age of 12 -18 years, Holly will work closely with the local high school support services for referrals, though referrals can also come through from other areas in the community. This individualised service seeks to build relationships and enable and empower the young person. OR

New playground at Mary Cairncross

As well as exploring numerous trails through 55 hectares of lush natural rainforest and identifying hundreds of friendly wildlife species, there’s going to be even more to entertain and inspire children at our beloved Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, with the unveiling of a unique new playground. Councillor Jenny McKay said the newly created facility was far from any old playground, with many innovative and interactive elements. “As well as all the traditional favourites – a double A frame swing set, spring toy and spinning cup – the fantastic new playground features a fabulous tree house with galvanised stirrups, a worm slide, vine net and tree climb pole along with a suspension bridge, boulder scramble and much more,” Cr McKay said. “All the play elements, along with the materials used, have a flora and fauna theme, and look perfectly in place where they are nestled in this much-loved nature and visitor haven.” Cr McKay said she was always looking for opportunities to encourage and enable people of all ages and abilities to experience and enjoy our wonderful natural environment, so she was pleased the playground included many special features to make it more accessible to everybody. “This is really one playground you need to see to fully appreciate all the special elements, so why not plan a visit to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve very soon?” Cr McKay said. “After all, the Reserve is open 365 days a year (including public holidays) for exploration and enjoyment – thanks to our wonderful volunteers.” Anthony Ross and Cr McKay inspecting playground with mother Louise and daughter Olivia Henzell having a go

Glasshouse Country SES to the Rescue

Contributed by Dave Erbacher

Good Friday was not such a great day for a walker on Mt Ngungun, the SES Group received a call for assistance as a lady had fallen and as a result had a sprained ankle. A carer from Brisbane had taken two ladies for the climb to the peak and after enjoying the view, started down when one slipped and suffered ankle damage. This occurred very close to the top. Terry and Travis from Beerwah Ambulance attended, checked the damage and made the patient comfortable for the stretcher journey to the car park. Fifty-year-old Louise from Ashgrove was slightly embarrassed but never complained on the slow trip down the mountain. The SES team of Tim, Tarra, Brendan, David, Brady and Dave along with Terry and Travis, managed to get various members of the public to assist with the task of carrying Louise off the mountain and arrived at the car park about 4.30pm. Louise was then conveyed to Caboolture Hospital for further attention. The Vertical Rescue Members of our Group have been putting in a great effort to have their qualifications maintained so that the Group can respond to the more serious events on our mountains. At the same time training is ongoing to have other members complete pre-requisite courses which lead up to being fully qualified to respond to the normal tasks of storm damage etc, responses prior to engaging in the Vertical Mobility and Vertical Rescue course. If anyone is interested in joining our team please contact Group Leader, Robert Barry on 0427 894 182, Dave Erbacher 0417 759 483 or come along to a training evening to sus us out. We meet from 7.00pm on the first and third Thursday each month. Our shed is opposite the Beerwah RSL. Injured walker being brought back down the mountain

Year of Small Farmer at the Show This year’s Maleny Agricultural Show to be held on Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31, will be celebrating our ‘small farmers’. So why not grab the kids and make the most of the opportunity to check out some fine specimens of local dairy cattle, stud beef cattle, poultry and farm produce at this year’s show.

YOUR LOCAL FOOT & ANKLE CLINIC

There will also be interactive displays demonstrating the process some of our local produce goes through before it arrives at the supermarket which is new to the show this year. The Nambour High School will also have a farm display with the chance for you to see where the milk comes from as well as butter making and cream separation. And for those of you who aren’t farmers but enjoy your garden, you may like to enter some of your garden produce into a section at this year’s show too. To find out more check out the program, available at the Landsborough IGA. For information about all the sections, categories and competitions go to their website www.malenyshowsociety.org.au

A better bridge on Myla Road Improved flood immunity, traffic flow and pedestrian safety – those are the major benefits that will be delivered to the Landsborough community via a new and improved concrete bridge on Myla Road. Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said the existing road bridge had reached the end of its serviceable life and council is currently replacing it with a wider, two-lane reinforced concrete bridge. “The new bridge is being built approximately 1.2m higher than the previous timber bridge to ensure it provides improved immunity from flooding,” he said. “A separate pedestrian lane will also be incorporated into the new bridge to enable safer travel for pedestrians. “While this project has created some disruptions to normal traffic flow in the area, council provided affected residents, schools and businesses with notifications well in advance to works commencing,” he said. “I thank the Landsborough community very much for its patience during construction of this important project and I’m confident local residents and commuters will be very pleased with the outcome. “The bridge is due for completion in mid-June, however the recent wet weather periods are likely to delay the finish date.” Council is attempting to avoid disturbing vegetation during construction of the new bridge. Some vegetation works will be undertaken at the site when works are complete.

Our local roads the new driving force for film productions The Sunshine Coast hinterland has been showcased at the global launch of Subaru’s latest WRX model, putting the region on the map for future production locations. Dynamite Productions managed the Subaru promotion. Film location manager Duncan Jones said that the director’s brief was primarily to scout for unusual hinterland settings for the production shoot, and the meandering Beerburrum, Maleny and Glass House roads featuring the Glass House Mountains as a backdrop was a perfect match. The company is so impressed with the region’s beauty and the assistance provided by Sunshine Coast Council during the production shoot, they are keen to return. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said he was not surprised the Sunshine Coast had been selected for the Subaru shoot.

“I am pleased to see our own winding roadsides across Beerburrum, Maleny and Glass House Mountains captured on the big screen for worldwide screenings of the new Subaru models,” Mayor Jamieson said. “These types of large scale film productions provide a big monetary boost to the local economy over a very short period of time, not to mention the promotional tourist drawcard many productions may then provide to the region through ongoing viewings of the footage." Contributed by Bob Banner At a well attended April dinner meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club, club president Rita Sanderson was pleased to pass on the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Award to local Lion Una Robinson for her efforts in locating a Crocodile walker. Crocodile walkers are used to help young people with severe disabilities to achieve greater mobility. Lion Max Pinwill had previously come across a young local in dire need of a support system, to help with his efforts towards greater mobility and independence. The walker that Lion Una located is believed to be one that the club donated to another young person several years ago. The device will receive a thorough overhaul before being put to use again.

Beerwah Wetland Wonderland Contributed by Roger Callen Ten hard-working and enthusiastic volunteers planted over 300 native grasses, sedges and reeds in the first stage of the Emma Place Park Coochin Creek Wetland Rehabilitation Project at Coochin Creek Bushland Group’s Friday meeting in April. Two even returned on Saturday to continue planting. It was great to see the back of Emma Park being returned to something like its original state – we hope the cyclonic rains don’t wash it out! Thanks to council’s Rhonda Martin for safety supervision and equipment and GMAN for

morning tea and extra hands on deck! Also to volunteer Rhys for his plant knowledge and nursery visits. We were also joined by Dave and his son all the way from Mooloolah Valley. Plants are being paid for from our SEQ Catchments grant. This project continues with tree and shrub planting at our next meeting on Friday, May 2. New volunteers most welcome! Contact Roger on 0435 347 662. Please note the bulk of the park will be retained for recreation - planting is taking place in the unusable eroded area.

Invest in Solar – 14% to 24% return

Is it too late to invest in solar?

Don’t leave it in the bank!

With electricity prices skyrocketing ahead, it will NEVER be too late. But did you know investing in solar on your OWN house roof will probably return you a MINIMUM of 14% and perhaps as much as 24%. Beat that!

If you leave your $3000 (the cost of the solar) in the bank, you may earn $3000 x 5% interest = $150 per year.

The small power user – say $250 per quarter

A solar system for say $3000 will produce about 8kWhrs a day of electricity (this is about how much a day a $250 bill uses). Power is consumed in the day and the night … but solar only works in the day. So if the owners of the house are home most days, they will consume about 4kWhrs of electricity and 4kWhrs will run out to the grid (exported). Here is how the return on your investment looks. 4kWhrs of your solar power used saves you 4 x $0.30 = $1.20 per day 4kWhrs of your solar power exported earns you 4 x $0.08 (AGL) = $0.32 Amount saved and earned each day = $1.52 x 90 days (quarter) = $136 per quarter So if your bill WAS $250, it has now been reduced by $136 – so it is $114 per quarter.

Place it on your roof

But if you take it out of the bank and convert your $3000 to a solar system, LOOK AT THE RETURNS earned and saved (see above). It is $136 per quarter x 4 = $544 per year, which is about 3.5 times MORE than bank interest, or it represents 18.1% return on investment.

How much is your bill?

Ask us to calculate the return on your investment if you have a bigger or smaller power bill. But one thing is for certain. Solar is an UNBEATABLE investment, and guess what? As electricity keeps going up quarter by quarter or year by year, your solar investment just GETS BETTER and BETTER. The sooner you buy, the more you save!

Battery storage is the way forward

Now that feed-in tariffs have been reduced significantly across the country, we are facing a new and exciting period in the solar industry. Solar systems no longer need to be made as large as can be. Today, solar systems can be designed to match daytime consumption. However, we do consume energy at night and as yet, there isn’t an easy solution to making solar work during this period.

Consumption v’s generation

For most households with solar PV systems, their ability to generate electricity is generally greater than their ability to use it. Exporting to the grid no longer makes sense, so the choices are to generate less, shift consumption patterns, or store the energy for use at a later time.

Battery storage is the way forward

The concept is not new. It has been in use for decades in one form or another. What has changed is the relative affordability and durability of battery storage systems.

Australian solar needs battery storage

The Alternative Energy Association has posted an elaborate array of facts and figures which seem to point to the conclusion that smaller is economically better when it comes to roof top solar PV systems. By adding even more small PV systems and still ignoring the issue of evening peaks, we are only going to make a bad situation worse, to the detriment of the industry and the community. It doesn’t matter if we have bucket loads of gas to fire peaking power plants, unless they are located in your neighbourhood park, we are still going to get stung for more and more “peak” infrastructure that is used a fraction of the year. Energex in Queensland is currently offering rebates of up to $500 for the ability to augment peak demand for air conditioners. One has to wonder however, how long a lump sum payment will

ensure a customer to allow their air conditioner to be switched off remotely when they want to use it the most. Ultimately, Time-Of-Use metering must prevail. Only then will customers have real control of energy prices. But there is one condition that will need to be met for it to work, that is that it reflects actual costs, and it is not to be used as a candle wick to produce income streams unrelated to energy supply. Battery storage can then truly make an impact and take commercial leaps and bounds. Even non-solar owners can charge their storage device off-peak for use when prices spike in the evening. The death spiral for distribution is in full swing, the problem is, the powers to be are trying to reverse the causes, not embrace them and steer the Australian electrical industry on a new, innovative course. Remembering Our Diggers

The 2014 Anzac Day commemorations in our area, and throughout the nation, seem even more poignant than usual as we approach the World War 1 centenary. This time 100 years ago the world was on the brink of war, yet people were going about their daily lives not realising the disasters which lay ahead of them. By the end of 1914, young men from our district were already ‘joining up’ and heading for the Middle East and later Europe. One of the first Peachester men to enlist was William John (Jack) Francis, son of local farmers Walter and Sarah Francis. Jack enlisted in the 5th Light Horse on December 17, 1914, and served in Egypt, Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine. Jack was an excellent horseman, and gave his occupation on his enlistment papers as ‘bushman’. Grace Hodgens (nee Simpson), then 13 years of age, vividly recalled gazing down from the balcony of the Beerwah Hotel to see Jack ride up the main street of Beerwah in full Light Horse uniform, emu feathers waving in the breeze. After the war, Jack worked as a carpenter. He share-farmed on Hodgens’ dairy farm during the 1930s and 1940s; then returning to the building industry, one of his first jobs was working with Nev Anning in 1947 on the major task of rebuilding the Peachester Hall. A memorial plaque at Peachester Cemetery honours Jack’s life and service. The Peachester History Committee, in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Council, has established memorial walls at the cemetery to commemorate pioneer families and local servicemen and women who are buried elsewhere. Thanks mainly to the efforts of our late member Nev Anning, WW 2 diggers are well represented, however only a few WW 1 plaques are currently in place. The PHC has applied for funding through the Anzac Centenary Grants program to provide memorial plaques for other local WW 1 diggers. The ultimate aim is to honour all our local diggers on the memorial wall, but this grant would enable us to complete the project in time for the Anzac Centenary in April 2015.

Peachester History Committee meets at the Peachester Hall on the first Sunday of the month. If you would like more information please contact Helen Page 5494 9557 or Jan Gresham 5494 2301. 12 |

These are held on every second Tuesday evening of each month from 7.00pm - 9.00pm. On May 13, Master Pastellist and Landsborough local Chris Blake will be demonstrating a street perspective. Chris's demonstrations are usually very lively, entertaining and educational. Cost to members is $5.00 and non-members $10.00. This charge is to cover room hire. Tea and coffee is included, an art raffle is usually run and Caloundra Fine Arts at Kawana usually have a person present with a selection of art supplies. They also provide a special service in that artist orders will be accepted by phone and delivered to the meeting for collection. It is hoped that on June 10 there will be a demonstration on sand dunes and atmosphere with Master Pastellist Margaret Turner.

Recently the Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Mothers Union was presented with a cheque to assist with fundraising for their 2014 literacy project aimed at the women of Democratic Republic of Congo. Illiteracy rates in their country are currently around 70%. Enabling women to read empowers them to earn a livelihood and better care for their families. Mother’s Union is a worldwide arm of the Anglican Church operating in over 50 Countries and has over 4 million members. The project has been adopted by the worldwide membership of the Mother’s Union. Adult Literacy Tutor provides life-long learning Georgie Johnson has committed over 10 years to teaching adult literacy to those who fell through the educational cracks. Although her passion is the nuances of the English language, Georgie and a group of dedicated volunteer tutors lead a community class every week to assist those who wish to improve their everyday reading, writing and communication skills. When asked about why she has invested so much time in teaching adult literacy, Georgie’s answer was heartfelt. “Literacy to me is all about choice. If we’re not able to read, our ability to absorb and comprehend, in any meaningful way, the extraordinary volume of information that assails our senses is denied,” she said. “How do we decide which apples are the best value if we can’t decipher our junk-mail brochures? “Language and communication are intrinsic to our environment and to our very cultural identity - asking for help in improving our literacy skills is so soul baring.” If you are interested in becoming a literacy tutor and would like to undertake the free tutor training course please contact the Caloundra Community Centre on 5491 4000. The next course will start Tuesday, May 6 and run on successive Tuesdays for six weeks. Morning tea and lunch are provided.

Keeping warm this winter

Leanne of Beerburrum knows how fortunate she is to have a roof over her head and food in her tummy but as the weather gets cooler she is worried about all those others who live locally and are in need. She has decided to encourage people to donate items of clothing, shoes and blankets for those who could do with them to help keep them warm this winter. Her plan is to distribute the items to those who will benefit from them, so she is calling on the community to drop off their unwanted items to her home. If you would like to contact her you can give her a call on 5496 0378. Leanne said if you know of someone locally who is homeless or in need let her know and hopefully she can offer them some assistance.

School News Students rally for ‘Buy a Bale’ The last day of term is usually one full of excitement and primary students at Glasshouse Country Christian College had a double reason to celebrate. The day was dubbed ‘Farmers Day’. All the primary students came dressed as a farmer and paid their gold coin donation ‘fine’ to raise money to buy bales of hay for farmers through the Buy a Bale organisation (www.buyabale.com.au). Some rains have come, but the farmers are still suffering from the recent drought and need a lot of help to recover from the hard times. Even though students were excited to dress up and not wear their uniforms, all of them understood the serious situation of our farmers. Year 1 student Jordan Dalleau may be young but didn’t hesitate when he was asked why the school was having a farmer day. “Because in the middle of Australia it’s been very hot and the plants and animals were dying,” he said. As a class, Year 1W understood exactly the challenges the farmers faced. “They need more water,” called out one student.

Another said, “they have no more money and have to feed the animals.” “There hasn’t been enough rain,” answered another. The principal, head of primary and primary teachers got on board with the theme of the day dressing up and paying their own ‘fines’ for being out of uniform. Even the library ladies Jordan Dalleau from joined in supporting the Year 1 dresses as a farmer and stands below farmers. his colour-in sheet Each section of Glasshouse Country Christian College has now had a turn for raising funds for Buy a Bale. The senior students sold milkshakes and slices, the middle school students hosted a hot dog day and now the primary students have had their Farmer Day.

Sea of red greets the Morcombes

Contributed by Kylie Merola It was the ultimate day of cuteness when Landsborough State School held their annual Easter Bonnet Parade. Students from Prep to Year 2 proudly paraded around in a line as parents, family members and fellow students watched their happy little faces. There were many colourful creations adorned with bunnies, chickens, glitter and feathers. Following the procession of Easter Bonnets, each class performed an Easter song for the crowd. The Easter Bunny even hopped by for a surprise visit to hand out eggs to everyone. The Easter Bonnet Parade is definitely one of the childrens' favourite activities on the school calendar. It was an exciting day which set the mood for the Easter holidays. Landsborough School Captain Jenna Forsdike assisted The Easter Bunny to hand out eggs

Contributed by Desley Cole On Wednesday before the school holidays, the Maleny State School had a visit from Bruce and Denise Morcombe. They were greeted by a sea of red, when they entered the school parade. Over 60 parents attend as well as a whole school parade with all students and staff, the majority of the parents showing support by wearing red for the day. Bruce and Denise focused on the 3 R’s ‘recognise, react and report’. The Morcombes have visited over 300 schools spreading their child safety message. Keeping Kids Safe is their slogan.

First Buzz Day

Contributed by Kylie Merola On Thursday, April 3, Landsborough State School held their inaugural Buzz Behaviour Celebration Day. Buzz Day has been introduced this year as part of the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program. The reward system aims to celebrate student's positive behaviour choices, reduce problem behaviour and increase academic performance. Each week, students are taught one behaviour expectation, known as the ‘Bee Focus of the Week’ and this becomes the main Buzz around the school. At the end of each day, students also reflect on their behaviour to ascertain if they have made good choices and followed the school rules. All students who achieved their behaviour goals for this term, qualified for Buzz Day and were issued with a 'gold ticket' which was their pass to participate in the celebration. At Buzz Day, students participated in a variety of activities including a laser tag game, throwing wet sponges at student leaders and face painting. By far, the most popular activity of the day was the dunk tank where students had the opportunity to ‘dunk their teacher and principal’. It was a lovely way to end a busy term and reward students who have consistently followed the school rules. The school will hold Buzz Behaviour Celebration Days at the end of each school term. With the first event being such a great success, students can't wait to find out what the reward will be at the end of term two.

Clean Up Day delayed Mooloolah locals may have noticed there wasn’t an event held in Mooloolah on the official Clean Up Australia Day this year, but don’t panic. There is an event planned for Sunday, May 4 and everyone is welcome to participate. For the past 10 or so years, the Clean Up Australia Day in Mooloolah has been coordinated by Jan Kesby, the Environmental Manager of Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare. As Jan was in Thailand when the event took place in Australia the Mooloolah event had to be postponed until her return. For those that would like to do the right thing in our part of the world, the local ‘Clean Up Day’ kicks off at 9.00am at Martin Rungert Park bike shed in Mooloolah. Bring gloves, water, hat and sturdy shoes. Rubbish bags will be supplied. There will be a barbecue around 12.30pm for all those that bring a bag of rubbish back, plus a chocolate frog.

Real estate news Mooloolah Valley Real Estate, your local realty specialist Mooloolah Valley Real Estate are now the only local ‘in-town’ realty provider for Mooloolah, and they have been kept very busy so far this year focusing only on house sales (i.e. no rentals). “Readers will be pleased to know the market has been improving steadily since about mid last year, and we have been achieving list price results for some properties,” says Sally. “By having our fingers on the pulse of the local market as well as the regional and national markets, we can offer you a wealth of experience to assist you in achieving your goals.” “Plus we have the added bonus of a list of buyers just waiting for the right property,” adds Golden. Urgently seeking listings, the girls encourage

you to give them a call or pop into the office to see how they can help you. If you list your property exclusively with them you receive a great package with no hidden extras, or upfront fees. MVRE pay and organise it all for you: signage, advertising / re.com, website etc. everything to make buying or selling a breeze from start to settlement. A recent client, Jaclyn Lewis from Mooloolah Valley, emailed to say ‘Thank you so much for providing such a great local realty service. It is due to your honesty, reliability and attention to detail that we thank you for the recent seamless sale and also purchase of our new home.’ Another happy customer was Karen Paull. “My property sold first day on the market, partly due to correct pricing but also my agent Golden; her unassuming manner and

negotiating skills were excellent. MVRE setup beautiful photos! While allowing me to take my time gathering up my own information to make this transition flawless, Golden did the ground work to give a fantastic result and I’d like to thank them very much. Both ladies were wonderful.” So please call Sally on 0403 162 263, or Golden on 0413 675 792 to turn your dreams into a reality for 2014.

A warning for locals

You Said It Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519

Animal cruelty not on

With all the harping on about recycling fees and the dumping of rubbish, a far worse problem is irresponsible pet ownership. There are nuisance factors from dogs barking and cats roaming the streets at night. Then there are pets that are simply abandoned when a person decides it is too inconvenient to look after them. There are worse fates for some, especially at the hands of the cat-haters. Rather than taking an unwanted pet to the pound or vet, some people just resort to killing them. I know of two such cases: a person who shot his sister’s two cats in their mouths and another person who asphyxiated a domestic cat on the exhaust of his motorbike. Worryingly, none of their friends seemed to have a problem with such brutality. It would be great if there was a 24-hour curfew for cats and dogs, with no pet allowed to roam outside the property boundaries of the owners. And as a community, we should have zero tolerance towards animal cruelty and neglect. Mary Garden Beerwah

Traffic lights for Glass House Mountains

The intersection of Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street requires traffic lights, and the sooner the better. We have a local councillor, local State member and a Federal member, plus we have the power of the press. Surely we do not require a fatal accident to get them off their rears? Local police at Beerwah should be initiating this also. If they bothered to observe the intersection

at any time of the day or night, they would see what I see nearly every visit. Blatant disregard for the stop signs (they are just not big enough or red enough). Drivers never fail to amuse me in the manner in which they treat this intersection and the continual screech of brakes and tyres must surely worry someone. Have you noticed the new estates in our area, off Sahara Road, Coonowrin Road, and Poole Road just to name a few, and within two years another 500 homes with two vehicles per household, using this intersection. Steve Irwin Way is the main arterial road, when the Bruce Highway is blocked. Traffic is diverted onto Steve Irwin Way and you sit and sit at GHM. There are so many road users, including parents taking and collecting children to school, buses and the bark and quarry trucks and dog trailers, along with the local farmers off-loading their pineapples and fruit at the railway. Beerwah and Landsborough have been updated and traffic has a much improved mode of travel. Accidents will still occur, the lights just do not get red enough for some impatient drivers, they hate to slow or stop for anything. Simply put, traffic lights at GHM will make the intersection safer, traffic at any time will flow better and without doubt, a life will be saved. Please do not wait until someone is killed at our intersection. Let's get onto these people who we vote for and get a concerted effort from all to have our village entrance and exit made so much safer for all who use it. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

I have just received a letter from ‘Screen for Life’ which is setting up at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on May 9 offering screening for peripheral artery disease (which can cause stroke). From the research I have done this appears to be purely a money-making exercise as there is no evidence this screening can reduce the risk of stroke. The testing is not recommended by Australian experts, and it is not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. The firm offering the service is a US-based firm with no Australian experts listed on its Australian website. My advice would be for people to discuss this with their own GP and to look at some of the information available about the company before considering screening. Here are some websites that you may want to take a look at: http://www.smh.com.au/national/stroke-of-geniusor-a-fake-screen-test-20121229-2c0k4.html http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-05-27/heartstroke-screening-questioned/4713054 http://strokefoundation.com.au/2013/01/abouttesting-for-stroke/ http://ourhealth.org.au/have-a-say/have-your-saynow/preventative-health/a-consumer-conundrumcaused-a-cornucopia-screening#.U1cfuFWSxH0 http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/ food-and-health/general-health/safety/direct-toconsumer-health-screening/page/scans.aspx Name supplied Beerwah

Light up Landsborough

I recently attended a meeting of several businesses and a community hall representative in Landsborough to discuss the value and future opportunities for the ‘Light up Landsborough’ project. The town centre group agreed the roof line lights installed last Christmas looked excellent and also agreed to expand the use of LED lights to light up more of the roof lines of prominent buildings. The approach is a seasonal trial with the lights turned on for special occasions. The Easter weekend was the most recent light up event. There’s a lot of enthusiasm and many bright ideas for expanding the scope of the project, so I expect building this into an attraction for the town will gain more momentum during 2014. The beauty of LED lighting technology is that it consumes very little power and generates very little heat. I hope you had a good look over Easter - the businesses and I would welcome your feedback about the Light up Landsborough project.

P&O cruise ship

The very first visit of a P&O cruise ship carrying over 1,500 passengers to Mooloolaba will happen on August 16 and we may see a number of passengers headed to Glasshouse Country for a day trip. Over time, passengers who disembark will be able to consider a number of experiences including a trip to our Australia Zoo, a stop at the revitalised Beerwah streetscape or a visit to Landsborough’s historic township; and onto the walking tracks or summit trials in our magnificent Glass House Mountains.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Extra warning signs in Mooloolah

After meeting with a local resident to discuss concerns regarding safety risks on the corner of Tunnel Ridge Road, Mooloolah, council will be installing additional warning signs, curve markers and 50kph advisory speed signs. This work will be undertaken in the near future.

Creative workshops with grandchildren

I recently participated in two fantastic workshops with my four beautiful grandchildren. Our morning entailed learning how to write and illustrate a mini drama about the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly including looking at the plants it needs to survive and gaining an understanding about the weed plants that can kill the larvae. Thank you to the wonderful Jill Morris for facilitating the session at Maroochy Regional Botanic Garden. We finished the day at the Fried Mudd Pottery and Sculpture Workshop with Cathy Lawley in Maleny where we made bunnies and bilbies and all had a go on the potter’s wheel creating our own unique clay-nesting pots. We had such a fun and entertaining day and I for one learnt a lot in the process, so suspect the little ones did too!

Garden walks

An exciting new bushwalking track is being unveiled next month at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, adding a new experience to the precinct’s 6km network of walking tracks. Council and Friends of Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens invite the community to attend the new Upland Bushwalk opening celebration, including a free morning tea and guided walks, on Saturday, May 3, from 10.00am. Numbers are limited, so please secure your place by booking online at council’s Community Hub website http://community.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ . I hope to see you there!

We had open and frank discussions at the Glasshouse Visitor Information Centre with community members, centre volunteers and Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd staff. The volunteer program introduced by SCDL has had some clear successes with volunteer numbers growing from 18 to 45. Volunteers are feeling better supported with the training, educational visits to attractions and induction process they receive at the centre. We’ve agreed to meet on a more regular basis to keep up-to-date about service levels at our premier information and interpretive centre and I’m pleased volunteers and the community are feeling happier and more confident about the future direction for the centre.

Bowen Therapy was developed in Australia by Thomas Ambrose Bowen a self-trained remedial therapist who referred to himself as an osteopath. Today Bowen Therapy is practiced in over 30 countries throughout the word. A skilled Bowen therapist will detect areas of tension and dysfunction held within the musculoskeletal system using their hands. This skill, developed over time along with special testing, is instrumental in each treatment. Headaches, back pain, neck and shoulder tension, frozen shoulder, knee injuries, hip and hamstring pain, plantar fasciitis, digestive problems,

prolonged stress, grief, sinus and respiratory complaints are just some of the conditions which Bowen Therapy can address. Glasshouse Mountains Bowen Therapy is a home based business operating from a purposefully built therapy room set in a tranquil location. Owner Tracy Colenso holds a Diploma of Bowen Therapy, Master Class and has been practising for eight years. She is an accredited member of the Bowen Association of Australia and a member of the Bowen Academy of Australia. Eftpos, credit card facilities and health fund rebates are available. Opening hours are by appointment Monday to Friday 8.30am until 6.30pm and Saturdays 8.00am until 12.00noon. Do you experience pain or tingling running down your leg? Or pins and needles in your hands or feet? Do your arms or legs ‘fall asleep’ or feel numb? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation - the term chiropractors use to describe misaligned vertebra irritating your nerves. So how is your spine responsible for pain and tingling in your arm or leg? It’s really quite simple. Your nervous system is made up of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves (see image). This extensive network allows your brain to communicate with every organ, cell and tissue in your body. But once your spinal health deteriorates to the point of irritating your nervous system, you lose your potential for normal feeling and function – and a symptom develops. Sciatica is a symptom...not a cause of leg pain.

We provide a professional and cost effective Conveyancing Service Free perusal of your Contract by our staff before you sign

Business feature

It’s just a fancy word to describe nerve pain down your leg. The more important question is what is causing the sciatica? There are several causes of radiating nerve pain. Some of the most common are intervertebral disc injuries, tight muscles, and spinal subluxation. Finding the cause of your symptom will then lead you to the appropriate therapy. If stretching and massage haven’t worked, the cause is not likely to be muscular. For ruptured discs, surgery is often the best option. And you guessed it, chiropractic is the best option when

the cause is spinal subluxation. Two separate studies have shown that as little as 10 to 45 millimetres of mercury pressure (the weight of a coin on your hand) placed on the nerve was enough to change the nerve impulses by 40-60%. So even ‘minor’ subluxations can have a dramatic effect on the way you feel and function. The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore normal function to the spine, and reduce any nerve irritation caused by the misalignment. Chiropractors are the only health professionals whose sole focus is on detecting and correcting vertebral subluxation. If you would like to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your symptoms, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499. 6/21 Peachester Road, Beerwah. www.adjusttolife.com.au APRIL 30 2014 |

The Lookout Cafe

Last year when I caught up with Elise and Chris at the Lookout Café at Glass House Mountains they were really excited about the plans for a major renovation and expansion that was planned to be completed before Christmas. And for those of you who have had this type of work done, you will know it never runs smoothly – however when the results are spectacular the timing doesn’t seem to matter. And when the girls were able to re-open just in time for Easter they were really wrapped with how great the transformation had been. The new inside dining area is very ‘contemporary and stylish’ and is sure to impress the many overseas visitors to the café. Along one wall is a huge bi-fold window with

a bench running the full length, making it the perfect spot to sit with your coffee and just ponder the spectacular view! The girls are totally loving their new expansive kitchen, which means they have been able to expand the menu, now they can serve breakfast all day, and have also added a gluten free brekky, and a vegetarian option as well. Also available on the menu all day are burgers and chips, and the burgers are the type that make you think about whether or not you will have to cut them in half to get your mouth around them. After attending all the ANZAC Day services on Friday, we decided to head up to the café for a late lunch (which is how I know so much about

Local school garden grants

The students at Woodford State School were pleased to receive a raised garden bed after applying for the Ezyplant Schools Gardening Grant. Presented to the students by Bruce Monaghan from K.I.S.S. Products, one of Ezyplant's many generous grant partners, the School looks forward to replacing one of their old garden beds. Garden teacher, Natalie Porter, said that Woodford State School, along with many others, struggle to obtain support for gardening projects like this one. “The Ezyplant grant provides the assistance school garden projects need to continue valuable learning programs,” she said. Helen Spry, Managing Director of Ezyplant said that while they service a large geographic area, their base is in the Moreton Bay region. “So seeing local schools getting assistance is a close-to-home thrill for us,” Helen said. “We would like to remind local primary schools that the annual Ezyplant grant will be available with Round 5 starting this September”. For further information on school gardens go to www.ezyplant. com.au Kids give the thumbs down to old style vege gardens

New book exposes friends and foes in the garden

By Greg Brown These days, we all need to be aware that everything that bites and chews in the garden isn’t necessarily a problem that needs to be severely dealt with. There are just as many pests that are known as ‘beneficials’. Local horticulture, gardening and naturalist identity David Hockings, OAM has spent a lifetime advising gardeners, farmers and nursery growers about pests and diseases affecting their plants and crops. And last Sunday saw the launch of his new book – ‘Pests, Diseases and Beneficials – friends and foes of Australian gardens’. This 272 page full colour book is a transformational update of his first edition, published back in 1980. Since then, so much has changed in the world of pest and disease management that David has had to rewrite much of the material, as well as taking all new photos with much more detail and definition. Local MP Andrew Powell, in formally launching the book at the Maleny Historical Society Pioneer Village, acknowledged the amazing work that David has done over the years. “He worked with the DPI for over 40 years, 15 of those as the person in charge of government parks, as well as establishing the home garden advisory service” he said. “He has had two new native plant species named after him, as well as registering six new plant breeds he has developed himself. “If there was a way we could bottle the essence of David and infuse it into new Departmental recruits, we would,” said Andrew. Along with David’s professional career, he was also a founding member of the Society for Growing Australian Plants and was part of the inaugural Nambour Garden Expo back in 1984. He was also one of the original television gardening presenters, working when TV was black and white, which apparently would test his descriptive language skills when talking about colourful flowers. David’s latest book (he’s also working on another about native hibiscus) is a must have reference guide for all gardeners and plant growers. It simply and clearly displays all the most common (and some not so common) plant pests and diseases, as well as those creatures and critters which are good to have around. The book is available from the CSIRO publishing website (www.publishing. csiro.au) for $39.95, or just ask at any good bookstore.

Andrew Powell (right) congrulates David on his new book

Thelie Hobbs Suncoast Church Hinterland Often we like change when we are young because change reflects our 'growing up' and the energy that comes with youth. Boy do things change as we get older! It seems the older we get, the more difficult it is to accept change. Many times, change in our life comes about through heartbreak, tragedy, or loss. Change can make us feel anxious or uncomfortable, but if we live our life with God, change can be managed and even welcomed! It is often in the quiet moments – our quiet reflection to the changing situations in our lives, that we can offer our heart and our prayers to God and ask Him to help us through every change in our circumstances. Jeremiah 33 verse 3 reads, ‘…ask me and I will answer and show

you great and wonderful things that you don’t know’. If we ask Him, He has promised that He will answer us. It’s so easy to be overwhelmed by difficult situations that we can find ourselves in - but if we can change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. We can never change our life until we change our life choices. As we make the choice to change our focus, and keep our eyes on God – He will help us to keep things in perspective!

Contributed by Craig Bales Glasshouse Hinterland's Club Auskick will be commencing this Thursday, May 8 from 4.00pm till 5.00pm at our grounds at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for the age groups of 5 and 6 years old and those who are older but not wanting to play club football. Auskick is for both boys and girls and is run over a 10-12 week period. NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. Queensland Auskick Co-ordinator Stuart Seager said that Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment. “The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL,” said Stuart. “Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids' faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark.” If you require further information please contact Craig on 0414 225 329 or simply rock up on Thursday, May 8.

Contributed by Craig Bales This year the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions AFL Club has been provided 4 Masters games with the intention of submitting a team for the season of 2015. The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is ‘Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship’. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Masters attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities, from complete newbie’s to ex-AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and our oldest 69! Any interested AFL players who would like to come, have a run and improve their fitness are welcome to join training on Wednesday nights at 5:30pm at the Tunnel Ridge Road facility in Landsborough. Our first game is set for May 18 so now is the time to start dusting off the cobwebs and limbering up! For more information please contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig.Bales@Quantum.com

Maleny local Mikaela Briggs and her Queensland Heat teammates have claimed second place at the recent 2014 Southern Cross Challenge, held in Christchurch, New Zealand over Easter. The Queensland Heat made it through to the final of the tournament against the New Zealand White Sox, having won four out of five games played. Despite valiant efforts however, the Queensland Heat were unable to hold off the New Zealanders and were defeated 9 - 2 to finish in silver medal position. The Southern Cross Challenge is a premier international men’s and women’s softball tournament that is hosted by Softball Queensland and the New Zealand Canterbury Softball Association in alternate years. The Queensland Heat have previously claimed the Southern Cross Challenge title in 2013, 2010 and 2008. www.gcnews.com.au

Winner of Division 2 was Carol Fraser who came in with a 76 Nett, from Marie Norton on 77 Nett. Andrea also took home a ball for the random birdie hole on the 11th, as well as the NTP on the 18th. Well done Andrea. Fay Barry took out the NTP on the 2nd, Lea Garner was closest on the 5th, Grace Ferguson on the 16th and Rosemary Collins took out the div 2 NTP on the 18th. The Ball Run Down went to 80 Nett. We play for our Monthly Medal next week so hopefully Huey will continue to be kind to us. Until next week, stay safe and good golfing. APRIL 30 2014 |

Jack strode into ‘John’s Stable’ looking to buy a horse. “Listen here,” said John, “I’ve got just the horse you're looking for, the only thing is, he was trained by an interesting fellow. He doesn’t go and stop the usual way. The way to get him to stop is to scream hey hey the way to get him to go is to scream Thank God." Jim nodded his head, “fine with me, can I take him for a test run?” Jim was having the time of his life, this horse sure could run he thought to himself. Jim was speeding down the dirt road when he suddenly saw a cliff up ahead “stop!” screamed Jim, but the horse

TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This is your special Eclipse, as a Taurus Solar Eclipse can be a lifechanger. With Mercury in such a good aspect to Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter, this will be the week to leave behind your old self-defeating limitations and look to see the love that is around you. This New Moon in your sign sees you seeking security and comfort. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Mercury, your ruling planet, sings a happy tune from April 29 with Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter. These planets are under a Taurus Solar Eclipse at the end of this month, so karmic revelations erupt. You will eventually manifest a truly grounded sense of security and self-esteem. Best time to strengthen social connections. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This New Moon at the end of April is in your community zone. Set your sights on your best practical dream so you can attract the physical benefits into your life. Generally most of your news is good and others will agree with you in your networking circle. Making wishes now will bring warm practical responsiveness. LEO July 23 – August 22 Those of you without high egos will find the New Moon can sweep you towards the achievement of a career goal. This can be achieved by showing your practical resume and not over talking business ‘dribble’. Confide in somebody trustable. Talking with the right person helps to overcome any of your limitations.

Week beginning 30/04/14

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This New Moon in your compatible sign Taurus empowers a grand physiological belief. Dream big now about your future vision. Firm up any travel plans as later this week the Gemini Moon stirs up a desire for moving about and mental stimulation. Mercury, your ruling planet, finishes the month strongly with positivity. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Under a Taurus New Moon at the end of this month of April, it marks a good time for taking a fresh look at partnership finances. See about new investments, paying off loans or making sure all insurance policies are correct and up to date. Possibly some unexpected funds coming in from the family at this time. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This week, because of the New Moon in Taurus, this is now defining your relationship to see whether it is true love with another. If possible rest, relax, and rejoice because you are past a tough month and you know now the people who stood by you. Mercury is in good aspect with Jupiter, your heart is joyful. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Hopefully, under this New Moon in Taurus, new vistas will open in work, health and various projects. A job opportunity may be in the offering. This is not the week under a slow Taurus energy to rush jobs to completion. Pace yourself carefully and thoughtfully. Discipline is the key to living healthily.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This is the week that you leave the family nest to venture back into the world. It seems as though you may be too cautious as you are trying to skirt the outer world conflict. This New Moon in Taurus is a trigger for romance, having children, or generally speaking, recreational pleasures. Some like camping. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 As Taurus is the New Moon for this week, it challenges you to assess and correct any potential hazards on the home front. In fact this New Moon provides the motivation and the support for starting anything new concerning home, family, or property. Looking on the bright side opens your mind to good news. PISCES February 20 – March 20 What a month this has been, you might say, under a Lunar Eclipse earlier, and now this week, a Taurus Solar Eclipse. This week gives you firm communications to help you speak before a group, making your convections known. After a month of nonstop activity finally this month’s end provides respite. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This is the New Moon week, which brings opportunity to grow, improve or expand something that you physically have needed to do. Get some exposure to something you find inspirational. Put touchy topics aside for another day, and even when disagreeing, try to be nice about it! Good news for money under New Moon.

kept on going. No matter how much he tried he could not remember the words to get it to stop. “Yoyo,” screamed Jim, but the horse just kept on speeding ahead. It was five feet from the cliff when Jim suddenly remembered “heyhey!” Jim screamed. The horse skidded to a halt just one inch from the cliff. Jim could not believe his good fortune, he looked up to the sky, raise his hands in the air, breathed a deep sigh of relief and said with conviction, “Thank God.” Submitted by Sarah, Glass House
