QUESTION of the week goes to the Maleny State School Year 5 student who asked: “Are you Le Bron James?” “Ah, no.” “Do you play basketball?” “I“Yes.”knew it!” I was visiting the school as part of its ‘Kids In Action’ project on the Obi Obi Creek, which culminates in a big presentation next week. We took some great photos (story p5) and have mocked one up on this front page to showcase the new-look weekly paper, which hits stands on Sept 13. As you can see GC&M News has gone through its fair share of redesigns and facelifts over its 36 years. But whether the news arrives in the form of an A4 newsletter, the newer magazine-style, or our upcoming ‘compact’ look, one thing doesn’t change and that’s the way the newspaper backs its community.

Division 1 councillor Winston Johnston said the outcome was “tragic” for locals, but it was very difficult to secure a manager given some of the constraints on operating hours. As the pool is built on Education Department property it is only available for public use outside of school hours.
While the Maleny Swimming Club had secured staff to operate the pool for the 2022/23 Summer season, it is understood the contract had to be cancelled.

“It has been extremely difficult to find someone who is prepared to accept the conditions of access to the pool, and who can make it work as a business. The model is awkward and difficult to sustain,” the club stated.
There was some hope that new census data might provide a case for the Sunshine Coast Council to consider funding for a public pool, but that is not the case, Cr Johnston said. “We had a look at the census data, but while we are getting towards that level, we are probably still another census away,” he said. “As much as I’d like to see it happen and a pool built on the Precinct, it’s unlikely to happen.
By Jennifer Kent MALENY residents are set to endure their third summer without a local pool after a contract to operate the facility fell through at the last minute.
It is understood that build costs alone could reach $8 million -$10 million and that is before the annual operating costs.Despite this, it is understood a committee is currently exploring design plans with hopes that fundraising and grants may deliver a new pool facility.

Mr Turner said that already the school and music industry community were expressing their support for a similar styled event to happen again next year, and he is thrilled by the success of the initiative which promoted young people championing positive mental health through their music, and forming connections with each other and the music industry here on the Sunshine Coast.“There was a comment made on the night which I think summed it all up well, it was about how people hadn’t seen youth unite like this before, and it was a strong theme that came across to the audience that these were young

A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the closures were needed to “protect the safety of our contractors and minimise disruptions for“Completingmotorists”. this work during the day, with the volume of traffic, would be a significant challenge,” the spokesperson said. During the closure, local traffic will be diverted along Old Landsborough Road between Railway Street (north) and Kilcoy Beerwah Road (south). Heavy vehicles will be directed to use the Bruce Highway. Work is on track to complete the upgrade by the end of 2022. The upgrade aims to reduce the potential for head-on, rear-end and runoff-road crashes along Steve Irwin Way between Beerwah and Landsborough by widening and rehabilitating the road and shoulders; extending and replacing culverts; installing new infrastructure including traffic signals, dedicated rightturn lanes, lighting and safety barriers; and removing roadside hazards.
By Jennifer Kent MALENY State School are putting the ‘action’ in Kids In Action, with students spending the last few months learning the importance of keeping our waterways healthy. Year five students have been focusing their attention on local waterways, in particular, the Obi Obi Creek, home to the beautiful – and elusive – platypus. Thanks to some very enthusiastic teachers in Kate Stassen and Caroline Hartley, the program has been reintroduced into the school after a few years’ hiatus. Kids in Action is a Sunshine Coast Council award-winning environmental program for school-age children and this year celebrates its 10-year anniversary with the theme ‘Catchment Connections: Mountains to the Sea’.
A SECTION of Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah will be closed for three nights in early September as part of the roadway’s $24 million upgrade.
Kate, the school’s enrichment centre teacher, shared that the inspiration for joining in the project was to connect students with the learning opportunities of exploring waterways.
“We have been visiting the rainforest and creek generally twice a week and students have been able to explore their natural surroundings and use their observational skills. We have been testing the water and conducting lab work - it’s been a great opportunity for students to learn some science skills,” explained Kate.

“Students had the opportunity to hear from Jinibara Elder Jason Murphy and learn about the cultural connection and language to do with waterways,” said“InspirationKate. for joining the project was also a desire to engage more with our rainforest which was planted 20 years ago by teachers and students.”
The road will be closed between Irwin Road (north) and Foley Road (south) between 7.30pm and 4.30am from the 5th to 7th of September.
In addition to science teachings, students also met with local Jinibara elders, learning about the cultural connection with our waterways.

Amongst the Silver Award winners of the night, selected by the Chamber presidents, was Maleny’s most popular pizza maker Jennifer Bernasconi, from Jens Woodfired Pizza. While being one of two winners unable attend, Jen said that waking up to the news she won the Silver Employee Award was surreal.
“It’s so cool and exciting because I never thought I had a chance and am actually wondering why they would pick me,” she joked.
Jen opened her business eight years ago, after a friend asked her to take over a small kitchen inside Finbar’s Lounge Bar. Being a free-spirited hippie, Jen agreed, even with no pizza making experience. Hinterland’s UK folk star goes on tour
WITH a beautifully soft-spoken English accent, singer-songwriter Emily Maguire has called a shack on an Obi Obi goat farm home for nearly 30 years. After touring overseas for 12 years, she returned to the Sunshine Coast just before COVID-19 pandemic hit and is now releasing her first new album since 2017. Before its release in February 2023, she has decided to go on an Aussie tour to promote it, with the Sunshine Coast hinterland area being the kick-off point, before heading down to New South Wales.
Although there is one specific track on this new album that refers to the lockdown (‘The Only Thing’), most of the songs refer to the feelings she had during this period. With her family in the UK suffering much worse with Covid and her sister working in a COVID-19 hospital ward, these feelings include worry, guilt and gratefulness.
The Hinterland holds a special spot in Emily’s heart, as this is where she first embarked on her musical career. Initially coming to Australia to visit a friend, bassist and producer Christian Dunham, her original three-week trip turned into a four-year stay. Staying in an isolated shack on the other side of the globe was what Emily needed to heal from a breakup and a psychotic breakdown. She said the warmth, freedom and connection to nature that Queensland offered, flourished her creativity and motivated her to pursue her musical career, with the help of her friend turnedMaleny, husband.inparticular, she said is one of her favourite towns due to the many cafés, op-shops and bookstores. It is also the first town she ever visited in Australia and where her and her husband played their first ever gig in With2003.nointention to trade in the peace of her Aussie life for the busyness of London again, she is excited to begin touring the hinterland area and connecting with her fans. Most of her shows will be embracing the intimate, calming and relaxing atmosphere she loves, as they take place in local community halls. She will be performing at The Majestic Theatre in Pomona on Saturday, October 15 at 7:00pm; at Eudlo Hall on Saturday, October 22 at 7:30pm; and at Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, October 29 at 7:30pm.

Ivan Wild’s service to community
IVAN George Wild OAM was a man who believed in hard work and service to the community. The story of his 91 years reflects those values. Ivan was born in the Beerburrum Hospital on 12th October 1930. He was the youngest son of Bert and Edith Wild (née Bishop), and brother of Norm, Reg, Ivy, Laurie, Daisy and Elsie. Bert Wild and his brother Rupert had been orphaned as children, and were brought up at Bribie View (Donnybrook) by their aunt Annie Furlong. The Wild family became life-long friends with the Tripcony and Storr families of Donnybrook and Toorbul.Bertand Edith moved with their older children to Peachester in 1921, where they had purchased the dairy farm ‘Stanley Hills’ on Commissioners Flat Road, however they retained their land at Donnybrook which was used to run cattle. Ivan lived his whole life at Stanley Hills. He attended Commissioner’s Flat School, and his teacher, Margaret Hinds, later married Laurie Wild and became Ivan’s sister-in-law. For the last two years of primary school, with other local children, Ivan rode his horse to Woodford School once a fortnight to do manual arts lessons. After leaving school, Ivan worked with his father on their dairy farm. He recalled times when he would take the dry cattle down to the paddock at Donnybrook, driving them through the forestry. He also recounted stories of mustering with the Tripcony family, and swimming the cattle across from Goat Island, timed to fit in with low tide. Bert died when Ivan was only 15, and he was able to get permission to drive as far as Beerwah and Woodford. After his mother passed away Ivan took over the farm, with share farmers in the early years. Ivan married Beverley Hale in 1955, and they went on to have four daughters, Dianne, Vivienne, Karen and

When Dianne started school, Ivan joined the Commissioner’s Flat P&C and was president until the school closed in 1972, then becoming involved in the Woodford P&C. There he helped organise several historical celebrations andThispublications.ledtoIvan’s lifetime interest and involvement in local history. He and Bev were foundation members of both Peachester History Committee and Woodford Historical Society. He was president of the Woodford Bi-Centennial Committee which organised a major street parade and carnival.Asadairy farmer, Ivan made a significant contribution to the industry through his role on many committees and boards. He was elected to the Caboolture Co-operative Dairy Association Board in 1961, and served as Chairman from 1974 to 1997. The Co-op expanded to take in Booval and Wide Bay, and became known as Queensco, one of the most progressive and successful co-operatives in Queensland. He was also involved in the beef cattle industry with land at Running Creek and Manumbar.Whenthe girls were old enough to start Pony Club, this began another interest which kept Ivan busy until recent years – instructing, judging, and transporting his own and many other children with their ponies to Pony Club events. He was also involved in the Woodford Show Society and Woodford Campdraft Committee, and was a keen supporter of the Beerwah Charity Sports’ annual fundraiser for Cancer Council Qld. In 2014
Ivan and Bev were awarded Order of Australia Medals in recognition of their tireless community work. After Bev passed away in 2020, Ivan managed to stay at home with support from family and neighbours, but his health deteriorated. He passed away on 29th July, and –as he had requested – his funeral was held at the Peachester Community Hall, attended by a large crowd of friends and family. Khaita Tibetan Festival
For a variation on the above exercise, especially If you are a bluesy sort of player, instead of jamming with those same old riffs in E, (using chords E, A and B7), why not change key every 12 bars and really surprise yourself. Move it up a tone for the second 12 bars then down a major third for the next 12, for example.Thatwill get the brain working. Let’s extend the exercise by playing your riffs an octave higher than you are used to, and on different strings.Youmight argue that it is becoming less a musical exercise and more a technical one, but the gain is that it immediately tests you, and it is the sort of challenge that can happen in a live performance.
Finding inspiration for your music making…challenging practice TODAYmusic
THE Khaita Tibetan Annual Festival is back this September 17 at the Beerwah Community Hall from 10am. The Festival’s mission is to carry the legacy and inspiration of Professor Namkhai Norbu (Chögyal Namkhai Norbu) by organising and promoting various cultural activities to support individual and social evolution of human being in harmony with its own environment. This colourful festival provides the Sunshine Coast community with opportunity to participate in Tibetan culture through Khaita song, dance and food. This is the third year that the Khaita Tibetan Annual Festival has been held and sponsored by Sunshine CoastEntryCouncil.totheevent is free, but bring cash to purchase food. For more information about the festival, contact organiser Topgyal Gonste at tibet4you@gmail.com or 0478 321 559.
For example, instead of playing a few scales and riffs, and seeing where it goes from there, why not begin with a task created in the moment?
Go back to that time, still set in your mind, when a guitar string breaks mid song and you need to complete that song with just five strings, having to transpose your parts to a now slightly out of tune different string. Don’t laugh as it happens more often than not to all professional guitar players who bend their strings!
If you are a typical musician, whenever you take up your instrument at home, you will start by playing things that make you feel good.
The result is both a musical and a technical test, but let’s further extend it by giving you a chord progression to work with. Something simple like a 2-5-1 progression spread over four bars, for example chords Dm7, G7 and Cmaj7 to C.
Perhaps you can play or arpeggiate the chord at the
beginning of each bar and then solo around it, still making it sound musical, or why not just try to hear it in your head? It’s getting more challenging isn’t it?
Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au
Dr Michael Whitickerwith
If you are a keyboardist the left hand can play the chords and it’s not hard, but it’s more difficult for a saxophonist or guitarist who might prefer to have the chords on a backing track or loop.
OVER the last months with parts one and two of this series, I hopefully seeded some fun ideas to get you making music but I’d like to come back to basics with some instrumental specifics in this article.
Give yourself a time signature and a key, and lock into that for your riffs and runs.

REPRESENTING the Near North Coast Sub Chamber and the Maleny Show Society after winning the Young Dairy Judges Competition at the Maleny Agricultural Show in May this year, 22-year-old Britney Holt (pictured with Monica Skerman) recently competed in the Queensland Ag Shows Dairy Cattle Young Judges competition held at the Ekka. Britney was named as the competition winner and goes on to represent Queensland at the National State Young Dairy Judges competition, which is held in Launceston, Tasmania next year. Britney has been showing cows alongside her Father at the Maleny Show her whole life, but it has only been in the last three years that she has stepped out on her own, competing in junior judging competitions. And this will be her first time competing at nationals. Britney said her goal is to become a judge at agricultural shows around Australia.

Mr Graeme Tosh (16/8) again claims that he is “better-informed” than the experts (he terms them “badly informed global warmers”!)
The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2021 Climate Report is informed by those scientists whose measurements of global heating since industrialisation (1850-1900), shows an increase of 1.1C. In Australia, global heating has reached 1.4C. The Sunshine Coast is not immune, the number of extreme heat days has substantially increased since 1910, and pose a high risk to life. All of this data is available through the Sunshine Coast Council, the CSIRO and BOM. Mr Tosh suggested we “follow the money” when it comes to renewable energy. And I certainly did.
Dr Flannery’s predictions in 2007, at a time of El Nino, were confirmed at the time by both the CSIRO and the BOM, both of whom made similar predictions. Dr Flannery was subsequently pilloried in the gutter media. Australia is now in a La Nina cycle, part of the ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation), bringing above average rainfall, exacerbated by global heating. The mistake of Dr Flannery, and also the numerous expert commentators, was that they confused climate variability for climate change. The future impact of climate change is very uncertain, but when one “wants to believe” it isn’t happening, then it is all too easy to get sucked in and to get it spectacularly wrong. Each year, hundreds of scientists collaborate to measure climate change impacts, and based on that research, do their best to predict what the future holds in a uncertain climate.
CONDITIONS
On the 15th August 2022, according to AEMO, wholesale electricity spot prices dropped significantly in Queensland reflecting the impact that renewable energy has on our power bills. It is currently generating 50 per cent of Queensland’s needs. All of that power comes from the sun, is free, and underscores the never-ending high cost of fossil fuels that Australians continue to pay through the nose for. I agree with Mr Tosh. It is very difficult to engage with the ill-informed. Ken LandsboroughDyer
Your contributor from Beerwah last issue (August 2) expressed views opposing what our unnamed correspondent wrote in an earlier issue (July 19). And Peter at least had the confidence to sign his name, good on you Peter. The subject was really evolution vs. creation. Now I am not a specialist on either subject but like most other people I have an opinion. To me every aspect of life and the seasons, the angle of inclination of the earth, which bring the seasons when working in harmony with the rotation of the earth, surely to an open minded person must puzzle how such perfection in all these aspects of sustainability must have required a master planner and not chance happenings millions of times over. As a child my dad kept chooks and the perennial question of “which came first the chicken or the egg” always puzzled me.To me, at least, the answer is so easy to explain if we accept that such perfection required a master planner and that was God and Jesus Christ. If you do read this letter Peter, then hopefully you will see the merit in the debate.NowI checked up on your statement about Mr Darwin being mis-quoted about his statement “transitional life forms” and it is a direct quote that he made in his latter years. Now it is true that maybe millions of fossils have been found but I am not aware if any of them have been a “transitional” life form. That is from one perfectly formed creature to a partly formed other creature. Unless a creature has all its systems operational it may not function properly, as I mentioned earlier in this Thereepistle.aremany famous scientists who believed in God including Albert Einstein, Blaise Pascal, Francis bacon, Galileo, and Marconi, Isaac Newton, Louis Pasture, just to name a few. 2. Those who reject anything produced by real scientists or medical experts, and produce or forward stuff which is obviously nonsense to intelligent readers. 3. Those without significant education or a basic I.Q. 4. Those who are driven by fear, and don’t want to know anything new! Mr Tosh, the great bulk of the world’s population, even the newly demoted and decimated Australian LNP coalition, would see your views on global warming as “ill-informed”. Read and study, and then you might be able to claim “better informed”.

for private and religious schools in 1964. They were intended to be one-off capital grants for struggling catholic schools to purchase science blocks. These one-off grants became recurrent for private schools in 1970. Essentially, in 1964, an insolvent catholic school threatened to close its doors and foist its pupils onto the state. The government caved in to this piece of extortion. Through time the rest of the private school system jumped on the bandwagon and asserted their imaginary rights. The government(s) should have called the initial catholic school’s bluff. The price of building one school for a group of child hostages would have saved taxpayers billions of dollars in later years. This form of state capture by pressure groups is reprehensible.Thereisamisunderstanding of ‘secular’. It means in this context, “Pertaining to the present world, or to things not spiritual or sacred. Dissociated from religious teaching and principles. Not devoted to sacred or religious use”. A check of any dictionary or the net would have helped Ms Cran out. The term ‘equity’ is abused as well. She wrote of some kind of religious equity, wherein all religions are treated the same. Of course, this (non) equity completely excludes the vast mass of people who pay tax and send their children to state schools. Equity means a situation in which people are treated in accordance with the things they bring to a situation. Equality occurs when everyone is treated the same, regardless of any attributes or impediments. Private schools do not save government(s) money. State aid to private schools is a result of extortion in the 60s and the subsequent racket that followed. Ms Cran did herself no favours by arguing that private schools save governments money. I take it as a form of perhaps implicit defence of religious organisations justifying the abominable. Last word. In this country, education is not a child’s right as Ms Cran holds. It is compulsory. PeterBeerwahSlade Taxes not fairly distributed I would like to respond to Fiona Cran’s letter regarding ‘Taxes support broad education’ (Aug 16 edition). While I respect her contribution, I don’t think tax money for education is allocated fairly. In fact any where near fairly. I was educated at an all boys catholic school in Brisbane in the 1960s. An independent GPS school. The parents of the students at that time, with some sacrifice, could afford to send their boy to such a school. That scenario today no longer applies.

Fig Tree Medical Maleny is thrilled to welcome Dr Sam Manger at 10 Cedar Street. Both Dr Sam Manger and his wife Dr Anita Manger are well-known, loved and respected GPs in Maleny; and as a family they enrich the Hinterland culture. This is important for Maleny residents because not only do patients prefer someone who knows them, but they also want to go to a practice and doctor who will be there for years to come.
Max has been with his horses in Glass House for many years, and it is a shame that progress has taken him away. I know many, as well as myself admired his horses on Coonowrin Road. He would often be taking children out and teaching them to ride, which if not for him, would not have had the chance to ride a horse. He was a proud man as he led the Anzac Day March on his beautiful big horse, Rocky, wearing his medals. Max must be in his twilight years by now, but I believe he is still riding, but away from Glass House. I feel sorry for him and it must have broken his heart when Rocky was killed in an accident. I know Max was proud of the fact Rocky was the grandson of that record breaking American horse, Secretariat.Goodonyou Max, keep riding as you are a grand horseman.

As with the other doctors at Fig Tree Medical, Dr Sam is always willing to find a gap for an appointment or avail themselves to urgent matters. Please contact the practice or book online at HotDocs to schedule an appointment – either at the practice or as a telephone or video consultation.
CONTINUITY OF CARE
Dr Sam is a very well-balanced person as he treasures his family but also his relationship with both patients and colleagues. Apart from his string of titles and achievements, it is his passion to improve the service delivery of healthcare which sets him apart from many others. For him it is not just good enough to be focussed on providing the best care to the patient in front of him but also to actively pursue new models to improve healthcare for the greater Australian healthcare system. We all know that the private and public healthcare systems are under pressure; and it is in times like this that we need proactive, caring and skilled people to take the lead and explore how doctors and other healthcare professionals can improve the short term and long-term outcomes of patients’ pains, pressures and problems.
Healthcare requires teamwork and coordination of all healthcare professionals involved – and the involvement of the patient through education and support are key to address the cause and not just the presenting symptom. At Fig Tree Medical we are honoured to have Dr Sam as part of an already tight knit group of doctors and staff; and he has already contributed to everything from the overall team spirit to patient care and to even the small bits of detail to improve the proficiency of the practice.
It is basically an exclusive school. That school and its past pupils are part of a very broad network of the old school tie ethos. Alive and thriving in the business world. Wealthy school benefactors can be found in board rooms of mining houses, financial institutions, the stock exchange, law firms, accountancy firms, real estate and so on. The amount of money flowing back to the school from these benefactors is astonishing. This particular school, along with similar institutions, should not receive any tax payers money, not one cent. There are many other independent schools who don’t benefit from the old school tie connection. These schools do need tax payer support.

Kindy kids have art in the right place
What do you love about Landsborough Kindy? I love when I play with my friends in our beautiful Kindy yard. We have native bees, a bee garden, swings, grass, rock river, a dancing stage and a sandpit. It is theLandsboroughbest!
OVER the past few months Children of Landsborough Community Kindergarten, in partnership with local creatives and makers have been busy creating art in all its forms: pottery, photography, jewellery, floral art and more. Through the creative process the children have been able to express themselves, learn from others, have a sense of purpose, try something new, problem solve and build self esteem! Their works will be displayed and sold at an upcoming Community Art Night at Landsborough Hall on Saturday, September 10 from 5-8pm to help raise funds for the Kindy. This night is designed to be a celebration of Children’s creativity and an opportunity to connect with Community. Meet one of our ‘Makers’ Murphy, aged 5 What is your favourite art medium? Photography and clay Where do you get your inspiration from? There was a lady who came to our Kindy and she taught as how to make a bowl. She was my inspiration! What do you want people to feel when they look at your work? I want them to feel happy, excited and surprised! How much are you going to sell your artwork for? 100 dollars – It’s really good!
Are you feeling SAD? Seasonal Adjustment Disorder is real and can be experienced throughout the seasons. However, it’s often more prevalent in winter as our bodies produce less melatonin and serotonin, the hormones which affect sleep and mood. If you are feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed by aspects of life, or feel your life is lacking vitality and purpose, you may benefit from the compassionate, evidence-based support Tracy provides. THE thought above prompted this question, do you know where you are going? Now let’s ask that same question with context? Do you know where you are going in light of eternity? Life has a way of throwing challenges at us in many different ways. Not only do we need to navigate the challenge but also stay the course. God has provided the blue print for navigating life through Jesus Christ. A way to live and walk through challenges while staying on track. There isn’t a single person who wouldn’t benefit from the values and principles He taught. So if heaven is on your bucket list, the only way to get there is through Jesus Christ. You may need to make some adjustments in the direction you are heading, if you want to reach your destination. The captain of a ship looked into the dark night and saw a light in the distance. THE Maleny State High School fundraising day for chaplaincy was conducted recently. The sporadic showers did not spoil the enjoyment for a small group of horse riders who were led on a two-hour ride through the Crohamhurst Forest. The event was organised mainly by Chaplaincy committee secretary Christine Bourne, who is also an energetic member of the Sunny Coast Trail Riding Association. Originally, it was hoped that the day would include an orienteering activity as well as mountain biking, but it was decided to go ahead with just the horse ride.

What’s new at the Zoo
THE recent opening of the Warrior Restaurant and Bar at Australia Zoo’s newest venture, The Crocodile Hunter Lodge, was a great excuse to get together with a few old friends (and coincidentally, all ex-Australia Zoo staff) to sample what was new at the zoo. The lodge itself, tucked away on Irwin Road is an impressive sight, surrounded by vast tracks of natural bushland. Walking through the lobby of the lodge past the animal exhibits, The Warrior Restaurant has a relaxed warm feel. Named after Bindi’s daughter, Grace Warrior, it boasts ‘True Blue Cuisine’ with food crafted with fresh Australian ingredients. The cocktails were full and flowed freely.Forentrées, our group selected the baked Kenilworth washed rind cheese, duck liver parfait and beetroot cured Kingfish. Mains were the pan-fried snapper, the Mountain mascarpone, the dark Bassam chocolate tart and the classic Crème Brulee.

I think we’d all agree that it is the Howard Walkers of the world that give our country towns the ‘g’day village feel’ we love. It is a wonderful opportunity to commemorate a man who contributed so much to the atmosphere of Peachester and I congratulate all those involved in the naming of Howard Walker Memorial Park Jinibara Country. And, of course, a huge shout out to the wonderful Hideaway Weddings for hosting the Glassies for the fifth year in a row, thank you for making it such an easy event to run. I’m sure you’ve already read about the winners so I’ll keep it short but I just want to give a little extra acknowledgement to the incredibly deserving gold business and employee winners – Clock Shop at Montville and Kerri Sneddon from the Woodford Barbers. Clock Shop has welcomed over three million physical visitors to their store since the doors opened in 1993 and owners Dan and Holly absolutely pride themselves on customer service. With a staggering 654 votes, I simply had to crown them with the gold business award! As for Kerri, when she isn’t busy transforming hair in the salon, she has established a circle of women supporting women – Wild La Fe – that keeps her busy. Reports are that Kerri is helping to heal and empower women throughout the broader Woodford region. I couldn’t be more pleased to announce Clock Shop and Kerri as this year’s gold glassy winners.

Many of those working from home reported they worked at their dining table (33%), 16% worked from bed and 15% worked from their sofa rather than at a Whiledesk.67% reported that since working from home the hours spent working at their computers had increased.Chiropractors reported 89% of patients saying they had increased neck and shoulder stiffness due to poor ergonomic workspaces .
While 41% reported an increase in patient stress levels due to greater workloads and longer working hours.
Lead author, Dr Adrienne Withall, explained that these statistics have gone relatively unnoticed, either in public discourse or policy directives. “While younger men have the highest suicide risk when looking at the total number of suicides, when we even the playing field and look at age-standardised rates, it shows that the suicide rate is highest in men aged 85 years and older,” said Dr Adrienne Withall.Theposition piece details how there are many factors which can contribute to suicide risk, including frailty, chronic pain, bereavement and financial troubles. Dr Withall said that the silent challenge amongst men aged 85 and above is a combination of psychological and existential distress.

A NEW position piece in The Conversation reveals how men over 85 have the highest suicide rates of any other age group in Australia. The paper represents the culmination of a partnership between the Lifeline Research Foundation and UNSW Ageing Futures Institute. The position piece reveals that in the latest national data from 2020, men over 85 had the highest age-specific suicide rate at 36.2 deaths per 100,000. This has increased from 32.3 deaths per 100,000 in 2019. For women in the same age bracket, this rate was much lower at 6.2 deaths per 100,000.
“Implementing positive spinal health habits including using an ergonomic office chair, adjusting your laptop to eye level and positioning your knees slightly below your hips when sitting, are all important factors in preventing spinal injuries when working from anywhere,” said Dr Cahill.

NEW statistics have prompted a health warning urging Australians to correct their poorly set up home workspaces to avoid any physical injuries that may be caused by unsafe workspace practices.
Due to living with COVID-19 for the past three years, the majority of Australians have worked in hybrid settings shared between home and office locations with new data revealing they may be risking their health by not working in ergonomically correct workspaces.DrDavidCahill, chiropractor and president of the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) said: “With more Australians working from home than ever before, those using computers at home who are not correctly set up in an ergonomic workspace, may be risking their spinal health and overall wellbeing.”
Poor ‘work from home’ stations are proving a pain in the neck (and back)
“While a by-product of the pandemic has seen working from home become normalised, the results of our recent surveys show alarming statistics that many Australians are yet to adjust to this ‘new normal’ and may be risking their health because they haven’t adopted safe work habits at home,” Dr Cahill said.

JOHN –
Although the dominant trend was for Sydneysiders and Melburnians to relocate to regional areas within their own states first, the next biggest trend was moving to Brisbane, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast, according to population data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. They followed a historically well-worn path north, as South East Queensland has been popular with retirees from the southern cities for decades. The difference during the pandemic was the number of millennial families who made the trek. This was because they could work from home, which meant they could live anywhere. And with most Aussies being sun-chasers, Queensland is the holy grail so that’s where plenty of them moved. The number of million-dollar markets in Brisbane and regional Queensland more than doubled (139% and 128% respectively) over the 12-month There’speriod. no doubt that regional price gains over the past two years have created affordability challenges for local buyers.
COVID-19 levelled the playing field between city and regional housing values, with many city dwellers choosing a tree or sea change over their city lifestyle. The price gap between attractive regionals and the big cities has narrowed driven by a combination of empty nesters cashing in on city prices, young families being forced to find less expensive housing options, and the new work-from-home workforce enjoying more flexible arrangements. The result is the metro and regional property markets moving as one, which I’ve never seen before in more than 40 years in real estate. It hasn’t been uncommon in the East Coast capital cities to pay $1 million or more for a home for quite some time. By comparison, the regions were always much more affordable. But COVID-19 changed everything, sparking a significant shift in our population over the past two years. That brought massive new demand to the most popular regions, which in turn has led to significant house and apartment price gains. Taking a big picture view, the trend that stands out for me relates to Queensland. It’s now the only state or territory in Australia with a similar number of million-dollar markets in both its capital city and regions. There are 122 in Brisbane and 107 in regional Queensland today. The Sunshine State is unique in this regard because regional Queensland encompasses the mega-popular Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. These two areas saw huge internal migration during the pandemic, with thousands of people from mostly NSW and Victoria heading north for a better lifestyle and also better housing affordability.
Locals are having to compete with lots of city newcomers, who are often bringing bigger budgets with them after selling in Sydney or Melbourne. But given the family home is the main financial asset of most Australians, I think the price appreciation we have seen in the regions has been very beneficial overall and a very welcome surprise for many regional homeowners. I see the population shift from cities to regions as facilitating a better geographical spread of Australia’s wealth. It’s providing a direct benefit to many small local economies and that’s great for the long-term health of our regions. This is important because the 2020 Census shows 67% of Australians live in just eight capital cities. That’s a very concentrated population, which has ramifications in terms of traffic congestion and access to services such as schools, hospitals, and child So,care.the rise of the regions is a great thing for our country.

JUNECANCER22 - JULY 22 This week brings the kind of emotional stability you’ve been craving - a time when love and friendship take priority. Your commitment to others deepens and you come to realise how much you truly need those you love. Never again will you take your significant others for granted. Life in general also undergoes transformation.
NOVEMBERSAGITTARIUS23
24 – SEPTEMBER 22
DECEMBERCAPRICORN22 – JANUARY 20
– FEBRUARY 18 This week, you have the planets well and truly on side. While the rest of us are trying to cope with our tedious lot, you’re spared similar frustrations. Money looks plentiful, which makes a welcome change from recent cash embarrassment. Spend up while the going’s good. Right now, too, there’s much to be said for team effort.
JULYLEO 23 – AUGUST 23
If you can placate rather than push, you’ll be fine. Unfortunately you’re in a stubborn mood and not really open to others’ suggestions. This week asks that you resolve any emotional issues. A tough ask, considering what’s been happening. Nonetheless, forgiveness of both yourself and others can only lead to peace of mind.
It’s a week to find peace and quiet, Gemini. Trust your instincts and understand that you need to give your mind, body and spirit time to rest and recover. No matter how much you’re being pushed to take action, stop and be still. Calm your mind - stop it from racing. Failure to do so may result in a touch of ill health not far down the line.
This week the planets encourage a more intuitive approach. A barrage of new thoughts and creative solutions fill your mind. Just be wary of those who would exploit you. Don’t be influenced about how to feel, or what to believe. Stay true to you. Also remember: you can’t help those who refuse to be helped.
SEPTEMBERLIBRA 23 – OCTOBER 23
OCTOBERSCORPIO 24 – NOVEMBER 22
NOVEMBERSAGITTARIUS23
You have plenty to think about this week, so do exactly that. Just don’t act on any of your ideas. With Mercury sidling backwards, it’s not the right time to make final decisions. Also, after last week’s major planetary transits, the cosmic dust again needs to settle before you move on major issues. In matters of love, too - tread warily.
– DECEMBER 21
Silence might be golden but it can also lead to inner conflict. You’ve been asked to maintain secrecy and, until now, have kept good faith. After all, it’s in your nature to be unquestioningly loyal. That is, until you run against a particularly petulant Mercury, who’s keen to get you talking when you should be staying quiet.

JUNECANCER22 - JULY 22
SEPTEMBERLIBRA 23 – OCTOBER 23
MARCHARIES 21 – APRIL 20 With the Sun opposing Neptune this week, there’s not much happening in romance but, surprisingly, you shouldn’t feel lonely or unhappy. Instead, you can look forward to being sheltered from the daily grind, with plenty of elbow room for introspection. Don’t be surprised by sudden revelations - you live by your intuition, so use it to your advantage.
APRILTAURUS21 – MAY 20 Prepare for the unpredictable, Taurus. Thanks to a delinquent Mercury, you’re journeying though an “anything can happen and probably will” phase. Maybe it’s time to be less indulgent and, perhaps, try not to cause disruption. Your relationships are also at odds, as is your bank balance. A week for caution.
APRILTAURUS21 – MAY 20 When blessed with your current ability to grasp cutting-edge concepts, go ahead and chase your ambitions. This week you become the trailblazer of the communications world. Name your direction, Taurus. You can focus on fresh career goals, new courses of study or an entirely new vocation. Relationships with your family also take a kinder turn.
You can’t run, you can’t hide. No matter how many jobs you leave - the same old lessons will come bite you on the backside until you get it right. You’ll know when it’s finally right when work feels like a joy and not slavery. Romance gets a shake-up too. As Scorpio tastes may change suddenly, your partner must be savvy enough to follow along quickly.
A plodding Mercury is prompting you to tie up any loose ends - sooner rather than later. Pay outstanding bills, reorganise your cupboards and rid yourself of any unnecessary baggage. In the same way, it’s not a great week for new ventures. To stay in the planetary flow, delay starting anything new until early next month.
FEBRUARYPISCES
Change doesn’t come easily to Scorpios. This week, however, you start to learn new ways of dealing with life. It won’t be easy to make certain changes, but letting go is exactly what you should do. Stop worrying about the things that you may leave behind and instead focus on everything waiting in the future.
DECEMBERCAPRICORN22
– DECEMBER 21 Finances and work share the same upward trend this week. Sometimes, though, it can be easy to waste opportunities, simply because over-optimism can lead to taking things for granted. Plant the seeds of success now, so that they may grow taller and stronger in the months to come. Plenty of support comes from friends and family.
JANUARYAQUARIUS21 – FEBRUARY 18 It’s time to sit down and resolve your problems with loved ones. If you don’t take this opportunity to talk with your spouse, colleagues or friends, then expect upheavals by week’s end. Clear the air by unearthing any hidden hostilities. Discuss finances, especially. Health will improve once the tension has been cleared.
If there’s one thing you’ve learned recently, it’s that you can survive - despite all the cliff edge challenges you’ve had to endure. You’re a survivor. Even when times get tough, earthy Virgos maintain their practicality and persistence - tremendous assets in this busy week when instinct and intellect make a powerful duo.
It’s been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Sound familiar, Cancer? Perhaps it’s time to let go of things that you may have been conditioned to accept, habits that are hard to break or people who are hard to let go of. It won’t be an easy decision but, maybe, a necessary one.
JULYLEO 23 – AUGUST 23 With the Sun and Mercury hurling killer vibes at Saturn, some rivalry is heading your way. The trouble is, fiery Leos don’t like being told what to do. All this could create conflict or misunderstandings. You may think you’re saying the right thing, but it’s coming out wrong. There are, however, people on your side - so recognise good advice when it’s given.
Mercury retrograde strikes again and creates a hot mess for everyone. This retrograde creates an optical illusion that stirs up technology, travel and communication. But if you work with this transit, rather than against it, you can truly glean a fresh perspective on your life through reflecting, realigning and recreating.
There’s no shame in moments of weakness. You feel vulnerable, as you’ve been so trusting. Don’t be so hard on yourself, Leo. Life’s been tough lately and despite all, you’re still standing strong. By week’s end, the planets push for spiritual and intellectual growth. This could mean learning new disciplines, and then applying them to daily life.
Your confidence and optimism make a comeback, counterbalancing Mercury’s scrambled signals. Many a karmic debt has been repaid, and much grace accumulated. This is your time to shine, so be prepared to declare your most cherished desires to the world. Your own agenda, driven by your soul’s unique purpose, comes to the fore.
19 – MARCH 20
It’s hard sticking to the centre of a problem when your head is spinning like a centrifuge. But once the mind settles, options will become more defined. There are times in your life when a crisis forces a change. That time is now. Along with altering the way you react to others, you develop a deep need to locate that special power that’s within us all.

Change is coming - so sharpen your intellect, and prepare. By week’s end your ability to think differently allows you to develop innovative new concepts. More to the point, you’re no longer prepared to be taken for granted and won’t hesitate in letting others know this. For singles, a new love affair promises to be more than just a casual fling.
OCTOBERSCORPIO 24 – NOVEMBER 22
Sometimes a time-out does the trick, Gemini. Take a day or two off from whatever is making you tetchy (a wretched retrograde Mercury, no doubt) and, pretty soon, you should start to feel right again. Talking to an objective friend can also be of assistance. It could help you to stabilise a situation, and then make positive changes from there.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Helen Uhlmann VISITORS to the showgrounds may have noticed the works occurring along our boundary while our irrigation system was being connected to the bore during this last week. This is a keenly anticipated milestone for us and we look forward to playing on healthy green lawns going forward. A huge thanks to all who participated in this process! The attached photo shows Matthew Howard and Wallace Roy surveying progress while the trench was being dug for the irrigation system. In club match news, Thursday August 11 saw Vince and Val Carbery team up to play Donna Manning and Kath Smith in a game of Association doubles on lawn 1, a game which the married pair won 11-6. Vince and Val have great stories of playing doubles together along the east coast of Australia. Sarah Widin, preparing for the Nell Hass tournament and the Queensland open championship, completely outclassed Ken Barker beating him 17–2 in a game which Ken never really got into. Wallace Roy played a team of Sally Adams and Helen Uhlmann at Golf croquet. Three games were completed, all of which were won by Wallace. As several regulars were off playing at Headland Buderim club on Sunday 14th, Helen Andrews and Wallace Roy were the only players on the lawn on Sunday 14th. Wallace beat Helen in a game of Association croquet 11–8. Meanwhile on the 14th, the Nell Hass memorial tournament was conducted under the energetic and able stewardship of Carolyn Aldrich and her team of helpers at Headland Buderim club. This is always a tournament where a large contingent of players from the Range club have participated. 2022 was no exception. Nick Cram, Sarah Widin, Vince Carbery, Val Carbery, and Kath Smith played, with Donna Manning

The reserve grade faced off against the Kawana Dolphins, winning 13-12 in golden point time. Beerwah scored the first two tries, before Kawana hit back towards the end of the game to level at 12-12 at full-time.
“I want to get this fight done in a good fashion, so I can kind of put my name back out there and then finish off the year massively with the fight in October.”Liamhas had to adjust his preparation to deal with Sholim’s unique fighting style.“Overall the preparation for this fight has been no different to any other preparation, we always put in the hard yards and do everything and anything we need to do to come in the best shape,” he said. “I will just have to adapt and adjust; we’ve got a good game plan so I’ve just got to put it all together.”
LOCAL boxer Liam Pope is bouncing back from a broken right hand and returns to the ring in Beerwah on September 9. The super bantam weight needed tendon surgery on his elbow to repair his broken hand, caused during his loss in April this year against Erik Sokolov. He battled bravely in the points loss to Sokolov despite breaking his hand in the third of 10 rounds. He will now fight Mocham Sholim before another planned bout in October against the current WBC Oceania Title holder.Pope said he could not wait to fight his Indonesian opponent in front of local fans at the Beerwah Hotel, in what will be his first home-based professional fight. “I’m super excited,” he said. night took place August 27 to celebrate the efforts of the resurrected seniors’ team which hadn’t played for 10 years. It was a torrid re-entry into the AFL competition, but the club were optimistic about their future. Club members spoke passionately at the end of season awards night about never letting the seniors team crumble like it did many years ago, and what a great club and team it is to play for. They also said the team showed continuous improvement including winning their second last game of the season.Theseniors team also made special mention of president Craig Bales and seniors coach Dean Crooks, with players presenting a signed jersey to Dean in appreciation of his hard work.
Golden finals day for Beerwah Bulldogs
Beerwah Bulldogs club. In the Men’s A Grade, the Doggies prevailed 22-20 against the Caboolture Snakes in extra time. Coach Brett Hill said he was still buzzing after the rollercoaster match with the Snakes scoring two minutes before full-time to level the scores at 20-20.“Inthe end, the emotions were crazy, I had no bench because everyone was injured so we were really struggling, that’s probably why it was a bit closer than I would have liked,” he said. “They’ve never won a division 1 A grade grand final so there’s a lot of emotion involved, all the old club legends are getting behind the team, and it’ll be pretty emotional if we win.”
Even though Pope is more than ready to fight the Indonesian featherweight, he was acutely aware of the uncertainty surrounding his name within the sport.
However a Kawana player required an ambulance after being knocked out, which delayed the game by 40 minutes. Beerwah kicked a field goal soon after play restarted to secure the win. It was not a great end to the season for the Bulldogs Open Women’s side, which was defeated 48-0 by Caboolture. Beerwah Bulldogs women’s coach Rod Kerr said a lack of experience was the main reason they struggled on August 28, but he focused on the positives from the season. “It was really good to get into the finals, especially for the younger girls, they are the future of the club, they’ve stuck through the whole season, and they are keen,” he said.
“I’d like to push for a big complex for soccer, we have a big one in Caboolture but I want one on the coast,” he said.
“I think more or less there’s a lot of question marks on my name at the moment in the boxing community of what happened in my recent fight,” he said.
