Hi Everyone... As you will see by the four pages of photos from Australia Day in this week’s edition, we were kept busy across the area. However my absolute favourite thing each year is watching the Citizenship Ceremony take place in the Maleny Showgrounds. It is really heart-warming for me to see first-hand how pleased those taking the pledge are, and how much they all enjoy the experience. Another highlight of the event is the enthusiasm with which the Maleny Singers perform for the audience, it is great to be able to proudly sing along with the national anthem and know that their beautiful voices will drown out mine! Finally, I also love to scan the list of those being acknowledged on the formal ‘Australia Day Honours List’. This year I was very pleased to see two of our dedicated community members receiving an Order of Australia. Denis Hare of Glass House Mountains was recognised for his service to veterans and their families and Lenore Burton from Maleny was recognised for her service to youth. Denis is an active member of our Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-branch and Lenore has been a driving force behind the local fundraising work of Friends of Ebenezer Australia which supports orphans in Zambia. Hopefully GC&M News will be able to catch up with them both during the week and will bring you their response to the Regards, awards in the next edition.

The 2019 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards ceremony, held on Australia Day eve, was attended by nominees and past recipients of the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Community Group or Organisation, Creative and Environment and Sustainability, and Sport and Recreation awards. Gateway Care leader Debra Knight earned the top honour in recognition of more than ten years providing support to thousands of families. Debra was named Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year for her unwavering and selfless support of community members in need. Gateway Care is a community-based organisation that offers holistic support to the community. Since taking over the leadership position in 2009, Debra has grown the Gateway Care program, which now has more than 4000 families on its database, with at least 800 families being supported with low cost groceries each week. Debra established a group of volunteers who offer care for others and make Gateway Care a safe-haven for individuals to come to share their story

and receive comfort and encouragement. Mayor Mark Jamieson said this year’s Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards had again highlighted the outstanding work of a number of community-focused Sunshine Coast citizens and organisations. “Our nominees in the Australia Day Awards are a very special group of achievers and this is our chance to say thank you,” Mr Jamieson said. “Their stories and efforts are inspirational and highlight how fortunate we are to have so many everyday heroes walking amongst us. “They fully deserve the public recognition for what they do to make our region a better place. They make a difference to so many lives.” The 2019 Australia Day Award recipients were nominated by members of the community and selected by a panel of local leaders and experts, including the 2017 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Jak Hardy and 2018 Senior Citizen of the Year Donald Moffatt. Evie Marshall was recognised as the Young Citizen of the Year. Evie successfully campaigned for Australians with cystic fibrosis (CF) to have affordable access to a life-extending medication. The government rejected subsidies for the medication three times due to the cost of $250,000 per patient per year. After three years of campaigning, the medication was made available at a maximum cost of $39 per patient per month. Around 1300 people with CF (50 on

How do we know what to buy? When it comes to solar energy systems … that is a very good question. Looking at all the different promotions in the media is very confusing. When we go to buy a house or car, we have a pretty good idea of what we want and the quality of manufacturer behind it. However, when it comes to a solar energy system, we are in the dark a bit. Here are a few guidelines to help. The CEC (Clean Energy Council) are the authority behind the solar industry. Installers must be accredited by the CEC, and they have strict guidelines as to what products meet our Australian standards. Each year the CEC releases a report which shows ‘Top 5 inverters’ and ‘Top 5 solar panels’, along with honourable mentions. It’s a great place to start. So now you know what you want, but who do you trust with your business? That really is the key to all major purchases, isn’t it? The solar industry is no different. The integrity of the company that you do business with is everything. Will they be there in the future if I need them? Are they trustworthy? How long have they been operating? All are key points. Don’t be taken in by the cheap advertised prices. These are ‘foot in the door’ tactics. You cannot provide an accurate quote without doing a proper site inspection. Buy on value not on cost. Solar is a long-term proposition, and a quality system should pay for itself within three to three-and-a-half years. One in three homeowners in Queensland operate on solar energy. It works and saves you money! Phone All Energy HQ now for your FREE site inspection. 4-10 Jeffreys Road, Glasshouse Mountains QLD 4518 e. sales@allenergyhq.com.au w. www.allenergyhq.com.au

the Sunshine Coast) will now live 20 years longer and have better quality lives as a result. Evie campaigned while managing her own gruelling daily CF treatment regimen. In addition to campaigning for the medication, she assisted in raising more than $150,000 to provide support to Sunshine Coast CF families, improve cross infection practices at the CF centre where Sunshine Coast adults are treated and extended her support to other young people with CF to reduce social isolation. David Woodrow took out the Senior Citizen of the Year Award. David has raised more than $300,000 for the emergency helicopter service, served in the State Emergency Services (SES) for 30 years and been involved in the armed forces. During the most active part of his community work, David spent about eight hours a week setting up the SES and being controller during the search for Daniel Morcombe. Maleny business Art on Cairncross received the Creative Award. Tony Gill and Jane Caraffi from Art on Cairncross have owned commercial art galleries on the Sunshine Coast for more than 23 years and have been involved with Caloundra Tourism, Visit Sunshine Coast and Hinterland Tourism agencies to promote the region’s visual arts sector. They have put many ‘art gallery trails’ together since the 1990s to increase visits to the region’s art galleries. Their latest art gallery trail is

A nine-month-old puppy called Zorro – a border collie springer spaniel cross or “sprollie” – has been flown from Tasmania to the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) to learn the art of finding owl vomit. Dr Celine Frere and Dr Romane Cristescu from Detection Dogs for Conservation at USC are helping train Zorro as part of a collaborative interstate project. USC is one of the few Australian universities that trains detection dogs for conservation. Zorro’s bootcamp was booked by researchers from the Australian National University’s difficult bird research group, led by Dr Dejan Stojanovic, which raised more than $60,000 through crowdfunding to get Zorro ready for the job. The group wants him to detect masked owls, which are endangered in Tasmania and are difficult to find, in order to learn more about what they need to survive. Dr Cristescu, the USC Detection Dogs for Conservation project manager, said this was the first time her team had been asked to help train a dog to detect owl pellets (regurgitated indigestible parts of prey on the forest floor). However, the team’s work in detecting other animals has included 3,000 searches for a variety of conservation projects involving koalas and quolls since 2011.

“At the moment it is about making a fun game [with Zorro] about finding a target scent, so we are just playing a lot and finding smelly things. He’s berserk about the game so he’s doing really well,” Dr Cristescu said. She said Zorro was also learning quickly from USC’s star sniffers, Maya and Baxter. “He’s quite in love and proud to be part of the club, so it seems old dogs can teach new dogs new tricks,” she said. The other side of his training is to acclimatise him to other animals, so he’s living with cats and chickens. “We’re training him to think all chickens and other animals are boring and that the specific target scents are the most exciting thing and will lead to lots of fun times,” Dr Cristescu said.

Colin Sinclair

50 years in Lions

Hinterland resident Colin Sinclair was recently honoured for 50 years of service to Lions. GC&M News thought it would be lovely to find out more about Colin’s commitment to his local communities and the personal rewards for him. Q: What made you first join the Lions Club? In 1968 we had just started a family and moved into our own house in Aspley. Being young and enthusiastic, we were looking for ways to become involved in our new community. The ideal opportunity arose when we were asked to join a new Lions Club being formed in Aspley. Q: What clubs have you been involved in? After 28 years of making a difference through the Lions in Aspley, we moved to New Zealand. We were made very welcome in the district and it was easy to transfer into the local Lions Club there. Later we moved to Christchurch where, again, we transferred to the closest

club and got a very warm welcome. We moved back to Queensland 13 years ago to be closer to our many grandchildren. Maleny has been a wonderful choice for us. Q: What have been some of the highlights over the years? It is hard to condense all the good things that have happened to us in such a short space because of our involvement in Lions over 50 years. Highlights have been seeing the smiles on the faces of those in the community we have helped, of the fun we have had when we were on various projects, or simply the amazing friendships that have developed with other Lions members. One or two particular things that stand out are helping to build and maintain a youth camp, developing a community park, painting a Girl Guides hut, and supplying a computer to a disabled child. Perhaps the major highlight for me was the building of Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club (together with a great team of enthusiastic, community minded people) to what it is today – one of the largest Lions Clubs in our district of more than 70 clubs and a very important part of our Maleny Blackall Range area. And then there are the welcome dinner events that we initiated. Thousands have now attended these great Lions community events. Q: Would you recommend others join and why? Of course! What better way for new residents

(young families through to retirees) to get involved with their new community. A great way to meet others and help those in need at the same time as improving the place in which they have chosen to live. Q: What type of changes have occurred during your time? There have been a lot of changes in Lions over 50 years. Probably the most significant was many years ago when ladies became eligible to join. Almost half of Maleny Lions are female. Nowadays, it has become easy to join and be involved. There are no strict attendance rules – only the wish to become involved in your community. Members only put in the time when it fits in with all the other chores of the modern world. Q: How do you feel about being acknowledged for 50 years of involvement? When you are enjoying what you are doing and the years slip by, it is hard to imagine what the fuss is about! Perhaps the pleasure I have had through Lions, the people I have met and the places I have been because of Lions have improved my quality of life and helped me achieve 50 years.

Business News Live, love, shop Maleny

February is traditionally a quiet month for local businesses, so Maleny Commerce has decided it is a perfect time of the year to remind locals of the importance of shopping in their home town first. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said the committee planned to prioritise their ‘Live, love, shop Maleny’ campaign for 2019, with the first initiative to be rolled out in February. “Maleny is still a country town at heart and we understand that locals can’t always buy everything they want or need in Maleny,” Nicole said. “However, sometimes the convenience of getting all of your shopping done at the one time means locals are heading off down the hill and while they are out for the day end up buying some things that they could easily purchase in town. “By spending in our local businesses it keeps the money local, which isn’t just about our local business owners, it also helps to create local employment and allows businesses to support the many community organisations and groups in the area. Ultimately the whole community benefits,” Nicole said. To reward locals (those living in the 4552 postcode) who support local businesses, each time they spend $50 between February 1-28 in a participating business, they will be encouraged to complete the simple entry form to go into the draw to win a $500 Visa debit card. “We only notified local businesses in the past week and already 60 of them have agreed to participate, and from this week customers will see the signs up in the participating stores.” If you are a business owner who would like to participate in the campaign, please email admin@ malenycommerce.org.au. You can also go onto the Maleny Commerce Facebook page to keep updated with the program. Jan Cornfoot from Rosetta's Books with Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton

Hinterland Kids Development for River School staff

River School staff recently participated in a number of professional development sessions in preparation for the new school year. Principal Ann Donoghoe said staff were looking forward to building on last year’s theme of Excellence to Growth on all levels in 2019. Students can look forward to an expansion in the number of popular lunch time clubs to include Lego, creek, art, sport, board games, acro dance, song writing and the famous Cuppa Club. During the first week back teachers will focus on creating positive relationships through a variety of team building and circle time activities. This year will also see the introduction of a whole school Progressive Neohumanist Curriculum which extends beyond the Australian Curriculum to create learning opportunities that develop a deeper understanding of universalism through the promotion of love and respect for all living beings. To find out more about the River School visit the new website riverschool.com.au or phone the friendly office staff on 5494 3559.

BeeGees Football Academy

Contributed by Stuart Mcintosh In preparation for the upcoming season, 50 junior players took part in the recent football clinic conducted by BeeGees Mini Roos coaching director Nathan Cobb. Nathan was supported by a number of the junior team coaches who are all looking forward to team selection following the upcoming sign up days. The club would like to express its thanks to the Glasshouse Christian College for the use of its new undercover area. It was great to be able to keep the youngsters out of the hot sun. All who attended enjoyed the three days of extensive training, an effort “well worth it”, according to some of the children who are all eagerly awaiting the season kick off in March. “Our competition doesn’t rest and neither do we,” echoed a couple of other juniors. All good news for Beerwah Sportsground Contributed by Helen Weil The Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee (BSMC) has had plenty of great things happening lately, including the purchase of a brand new heavy duty trailer with the help of two small grants from Glasshouse Mountains Rotary Club and the Sunshine Coast Council’s minor grants funding. The trailer (pictured) has already been extensively used around the grounds for maintenance jobs and it is available for use by all the affiliated groups that use the grounds. The main playing field will soon have an underground watering system as the committee was successful in the Stronger Communities Programme – Round 4, receiving $10,000 towards the project.

The BSMC thanked Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace for help in securing the grant. To further assist the project, the Sunshine Coast Council provided a grant of $10,000 from its major grants funding. Together these funds will be used to install underground irrigation and ensure the main playing field is kept in top class condition. The work is expected to be completed before the end of February. BSMC also received a grant of $26,640 from the Queensland Government Get Playing Places and Spaces Program – Round 7 to install outdoor fitness equipment. This work will get under way soon and should be ready for community use by mid-year. All up the sportsground has been very fortunate, but it won’t stop there. We will continue to bring improvements to this valuable community space.

The recent submission of a development application to Sunshine Coast Council brings the dream of a men’s shed facility behind the Mooloolah Community Centre a step closer to becoming a reality. The land, owned by the Department of Education, is leased and managed by the Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc (MVCA), which also runs the community centre and other ancillary notfor-profit community and social benefit programs. MVCA secretary Anita Verwayen explained in the development application that three years ago the MVCA management committee vice president, Bernard Verwayen, proposed the building of a men’s shed at the rear of the community centre.

“After community consultation via an ‘Expression of interest’ survey, over 300 signatories expressed their support for this much needed project for our area,” Anita wrote. “In October 2018 a meeting was called and a steering committee was formed to proceed with the project. Progress with the building plans are now well under way, and we hope the project will be completed by the end of 2019.” The plans include the construction of a purpose-built 24m x 16m steel-form shed on the south-western corner of the land, below the existing toilet block. More information about their plans can be found on developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au by searching for ‘MCU19/0003’.

The Mooloolah IGA store is set for a major revamp with the Sunshine Coast Council approving a material change of use development application. The approval allows for further operational works permits to be submitted, paving the way for the on-ground construction to begin. As previously reported in GC&M News last September, the application, made on behalf of the White’s IGA group by building owner Vince Ferraro (Bridgeman Enterprises Pty Ltd), sees the supermarket floor space extended by more than 600 square metres as well as providing more car parking. Council has specified 65 conditions that the development must adhere to, including the provision of a public art work, such as a mural, on the blank walls on the southern side of the new building. An example of the type of public art council encourages that readers may be familiar with is the very large photo image of the woodchop competitors on the Simpson Street wall of the Beerwah Shopping Village. Community Updates Reader photo of the week

From Patricia, Amanda and Staff at Beerwah Library

This week we have two very different holiday photos of the week to share with you. One comes from local reader Sue Mureau from her trip to the Capricorn Caves near Rockhampton.

Library love at Sunshine Coast Libraries

The other photo is from Lynn Laurie from her trip to Sheep Hills in Victoria. Next week’s theme is ‘Back to school’. Why not share your best shot with us either on Facebook or by using #gcmnews on Instagram and we’ll share our favourites with our readers.

Sunshine Coast Libraries will celebrate our community on Library Lovers Day on Thursday, February 14, from 10am-12noon. You can join in and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and some delicious cake with talented singer and guitarist Pepper Jane to celebrate all things libraries. No bookings are required. Did you know that for every $100 spent on public libraries, communities gain more than $200 of benefit (Library Dividend Report, State Library Queensland 2012). You may already enjoy these benefits by up-skilling in technology, attending events, accessing more than 360,000 free titles in the library collection, supporting your family’s literacy development at storytelling and rhyme time sessions, or making school holidays fun with free events. Perhaps you also enjoy the Wi-Fi, reading advice, air conditioning, community meeting rooms and inviting spaces to chat and socialise with others. Some of the Sunshine Coast’s prominent personalities will be sharing why they love libraries on social media during the week of Library Lover’s Day. Take a look when you visit Sunshine Coast Libraries on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Don’t forget to view the new releases on the library website at library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. You can reserve a new release for your next visit. All you need to do is click on the cover and place a reservation using your library card number and password. The new library catalogue offers a variety of new features. If you would like an overview please ask the friendly staff. Sunshine Coast Libraries look forward to sharing the #librarylove with you this February.

We also apologise sincerely for printing the wrong name on last week's photo. The spectacular image of the dragon fruit farm was by Monika Duff.

Living - Arts Calling all amateur photographers By Sonia Clark Beerwah CWA is calling for entries in the 2019 QCWA amateur photography competition, with winners to be announced on March 30. This is the first time the Beerwah branch has promoted the contest to the public and you don’t have to be a member to enter. Debbie Ives said that the competition was just one of many activities the QCWA ran throughout the year and the Beerwah branch was thrilled to be involved with showcasing local talent. “So many people enjoy photography these days and with so much subject matter available for the

competition entries, this is great way to engage our local community as well as a wonderful way to showcase local artistic skill,” Deb said. Members, non-members and children (up to 15 years) can enter at a cost of just 50 cents per entry up to a maximum of three entries per category. Photos must be rectangular in shape up to the maximum size of 5 inches x 7 inches (12.7cm x 17.8 cm), mounted on A5-sized black cardboard. Winning branch entries will be forwarded to division level for judging. Entries can be dropped into Neddy’s Nosebag

Re: Crime ‘fact check’

In response to Lisa Blackgrove’s letter (GC&M News, January 16), I would like to clear the record on where I get my crime statistics. The statistics I use are from the Queensland Police Service website, and they are for a whole year. It is official police information, which is publicly available online for everyone to view. By using annual statistics, I am able to see a more accurate picture, rather than looking at day by day or monthly snapshots. The reason that I have been so focussed on crime in the electorate lately is because in the space of one month I was suddenly inundated by emails, phone calls and being stopped in the street regarding the increase in robberies and delays in police response times. In Wamuran, Woodford, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum and Mooloolah Valley the stories were all the same. It is rare for an issue to become of such concern to so many constituents across such a cross section of the electorate at the same time. However, if you are still in doubt, simply have

Dude, where’s my park?

a read of what the Queensland Police Union representatives are saying. According to SeniorSergeant Notaro, the union’s south eastern region representative, “police [are] struggling under pressure to cut costs” and were constantly being told to “do more with less”. He said “the calls for service continue to pile in and are through the roof. Jobs are simply not getting done, as crews are at breaking point, going from job to job to job”. The police budget has been cut by $44 million this year and locals in Glass House are feeling it. Andrew Powell MP Glass House

Those who have been fortunate enough to take the train from Landsborough Station in the past three years will have noticed the unavailability of parking spaces. The overflow of parked vehicles has increased exponentially over recent months and has created quite a hindrance for local residents and businesses. Many local business owners have voiced their concern over the scarceness of customer parking. Travellers and commuters are required at times to simply abandon the idea of boarding at Landsborough and are forced to race the train to the next stop, fast and furious style. While this may sound rather exhilarating and energising on an early Monday morning, it’s actually quite the contrary. It is highly dangerous and unsettling. So why has the busiest train station on the Sunshine Coast had this epic inadequacy for so many years? The answer probably lies in a stack of unnecessarily complicated documents in the bureaucratic offices of our political representatives. What’s the solution? Adjacent to the track on the eastern side there appears to be a significant amount of unused land. I propose that action be taken to develop this land to increase the capacity of the carpark by 30-40%. This would relieve pressure on train goers who are commuting to the city and allow for a higher amount of customer traffic to local businesses through increased availability of parking. It is my belief that in a rapidly developing world, issues such as these call for a more tangible approach towards political matters on both a local and state level. Political gluttony may have been commonplace in the previous quarter century but will not suffice going forward. More initiative will be required. James Grimard Mount Mellum

Re: The decline of insects, birds and animals

Every summer on my walks I look for the eggs of the monarch butterfly. They are laid singly on a leaf of the cotton plant, each egg less than a millimetre in size. When it hatches I watch the caterpillar grow to maturity and then make its chrysalis. This is the most exquisite work of art. It is lime green and after 24 hours, minute gold dots form around the circumference. This year I have only found one egg and I note the dearth of monarch butterflies. My feeling is that pesticides used to get rid of weeds (turning country into neat suburbia) are the culprit. Whilst on the subject of decline, 20 years ago driving on a wet night it was hard to avoid hitting large numbers of frogs - not so now I find. All hope lies with the younger generation through education. Jane Longstaff Maleny

One family that were celebrating on Saturday were the McGurgan family of Palmview with Dad, Billy who was born in England, making his Aussie pledge. Next year his wife Martine, who was born in Holland, and son William, who was born on the Isle of Mann, will join the youngest member of the family, Sorcha who was born in Australia, so they will finally have the same nationality and will officially become an all-Aussie family.

Health Check What is tinnitus?

Caring for your mental health

iHear

Tinnitus is the name given to uncontrollable sound heard inside the head or ears that isn’t originating from an external source. It’s often described as ringing in the ears. However, others report tinnitus as buzzing, humming, whistling, chirping, hissing or clicking. Nearly one in five Australians will experience temporary or permanent tinnitus at some point in our lives. Some people find their tinnitus only mildly annoying, while others are severely distressed by symptoms and struggle to cope. For tinnitus of any degree, it’s best to get the cause checked. An assessment from one of our qualified clinicians who specialise in tinnitus can help you get relief from the symptoms of tinnitus as well as treat any accompanying hearing loss. Modern hearing aid technology can even treat your hearing loss and tinnitus symptoms at the same time. While there is no direct cure for tinnitus, our caring hearing health professionals can help patients better manage the symptoms and get that all-important relief. Tinnitus Awareness Week is from February 4-10 and ihear is running a tinnitus information session on Wednesday, February 20. Call ihear for more information on 5494 6985.

with Kelly Sweeting

Esprit Psychology opened its doors in Beerwah in August 2016. Since that time we have been working with individuals, couples and families to help achieve meaningful and worthwhile lives. Our psychologist Kelly Sweeting has experience in a wide range of problems including: depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, addiction, relationship counselling, trauma, complex mental health conditions and work place difficulties. Kelly uses various evidence-based interventions to support her clients. Kelly mainly uses cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and solution focus brief therapy. The philosophy of Esprit Psychology is to encourage the people who we work with to learn and understand the problem in-hand and allow then to identify their own goals. The journey starts with finding out what the problem is and then finding the best way for the individual to address the problem. The skills that people learn in sessions are not only useful in the present but hopefully will be useful in the future. Kelly works with individuals from 12 year olds to older adults. If you receive a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, your sessions will be bulk billed. Alternatively you can book an appointment privately. If you require further information or would like to book an appointment, please give us a call or send an email.

Health &Beauty Creating good eating habits Changing Habits founder, nutritionist and author, Cyndi O’Meara has some great advice for setting good eating habits for 2019 and beyond. With an average of 40 weeks of schooling ahead this year, that's around 200 lunchbox days looming for the kids and more for adults working 48 weeks a year.

It may seem an overwhelming thought, but it shouldn’t be? It means at least 200 chances to educate about eating well, to connect through food, to talk about flavours, and to look after each other through good health. With some preparation and meaningful shopping at start of each the week, there is no reason why children, older students and parents should be cutting corners in their daily diets. Good nutrition is essential to a child's learning, but it is no less important for an adult, regardless of age. Fuelling the body well is necessary for daily functioning - to get through a day of meetings without a foggy brain and for being at home with small children. All require a clear mind and healthy body. Taking an hour of your weekend to organise the food supplies for the working days ahead should become a habit if not already existing. Children who help prepare their lunches and make choices about their meal are more likely to eat their food at school. Prepare everyone's lunch together each day to form routine and normality in taking a balanced approach to eating, while appreciating and enjoying nutritious homemade foods. Essential every day for everyone is water. Aim to drink two litres a day to complement healthy lunches and to become a family healthy habit.

Tips for lunch boxes: 1. Lunchbox The first step to making lunch easy is to find a suitable container, a cooler and drink bottle for each individual. 2. Fruit and vegetables Always include a combination of colourful fresh produce to provide essential vitamin intake during the day. Use vege sticks or salad, a whole apple to snack on. Keep extra on hand. 3. Fermented foods Add gut healthy food like sauerkraut, pickled vegetables or a probiotic rich yoghurt to your lunch. 4. Protein Add a small serve of protein such as tuna or chicken, legumes or eggs to subside hunger and boost mind power. 5. Snacks Nuts and seeds will fill the gap and add protein to the diet. These can be dehydrated, dried fruits, or fresh snack fruits like berries or fresh dates. 6. Sweets Look at healthier options that can be made at home and frozen ahead of time.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in February

• Citrus trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate recommended on the bag. Tidy up the strawberry beds. Remove any dead or diseased plants, weed and fertilise. Keep them well watered so they will produce runners for next season. Fertilise your Camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser. Remove the spent flowering stems of apanthus. You can collect the seed and grow them yourself. Prepare bulb beds for spring flowering annuals with deep digging, addition of organic matter and mulching. Start looking in books or on the internet for different spring flowering bulbs you might like to order this month and plant in autumn. Once the sweet corn has finished, start to prepare the ground for peas and snow pea crops by digging in some garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March/April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. A mower with a catcher does a good job of this if you don’t have a mulcher. Take softwood cuttings of geraniums and pelargonium so that you can strike them and create new plants.

Progress on local community gardens Back in the December 12 edition of GC&M News, I wrote about Jason looking for locals interested in becoming involved in a community garden. Well since then, a lot has happened. Jason tells me that there is space now allocated at Beerwah & District Youth & Community Centre where a another local – Brian – is working towards making a community garden happen. Along with Jason, he has organised some Sunshine Coast Council assistance and is now looking for local people to become involved. The garden area there will be ready by the end of February. Jason also had an offer of space in Glass House Mountains to use as a community garden, so he is putting the call out for anyone in Glass House or Beerburrum who would like to get involved to give him a call. With the increase of small block residential living, community gardens are a way for people to keep in touch with nature and the earth, and they are a great for social integration and cohesion. If you would like to get involved in either the Beerwah or the Glass House community garden project (or both), call Jason on 0409 993 799.

Sow broccoli and cabbage seeds now and raise them for planting in March and April. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Remove any scale from indoor plants using soapy water and a soft toothbrush. • To treat lawn grubs, try sprinkling the area with a little laundry powder, then water it in. The grubs will come to the surface and the birds will feast on them. Vegetables Plant eggplant, capsicum, radish, cucumber, lettuce, sweet corn, beetroot, zucchini, leek, silverbeet, parsnip, potato, rhubarb, turnip, choko, pumpkin, snake beans, carrot, celery, melons, spring onion, squash and sweet potato.

Flowers Plant zinnia, marigold, columbine, linaria, vinca, alyssum, cosmos, petunia, portulaca, salvia, cyclamen, polyanthus, primula, scabiosa,

Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Playgroup

Contributed by Diane Gudgeon We will be looking forward to seeing all the gorgeous children and lovely mums on the second Wednesday after school goes back, February 6. How quickly time goes. God bless us all for 2019. Crafty Elaine, Puzzler King Keith, Puzzler Doris, Playdough Ethel, Pied Piper Kevin and Chatty Diane are looking forward to seeing you all return. If you are interested in joining the playgroup we meet on a Wednesday morning during school terms at the church at 375 Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah.

From the churches Let’s hope it’s a good one!

In John Lennon’s Christmas carol (War is Over) the words “Another year over and a new one just begun” helps us to see that time doesn’t stand still. It is said that there is one thing that is constant - change. It’s a new year and one filled with great possibilities and also there will be challenges. I am so glad God didn’t just give us one great time continuum. Imagine never having a new day to look forward to. You may remember the Queen described one year as her “annus horribilis” ie, a horrible year. Maybe for you 2018 was one of those years really tough. We are now in 2019 and it is like having a clean slate. Just one wise decision can change your life, marriage, family or business. Now 2018 has gone and in 2019 we can now find new hope and perspective for the changes that will need to be made. We have a 24-hour day with seconds, minutes, and hours all divided by day and night.

Rod Jobe Church on the Rise We can come to the end of one day and a new one opens up for us tomorrow. And so it is with life. The need to keep moving on is so important. If we are not careful we can live in the past. When you live in the past you build monuments to the past. It’s then all about what used to be and how “good the old days were”. People who live in the past talk about how good life used to be. If you live in the past, you have no future. Last week’s bread is stale, but there is a fresh loaf (year) now out of the oven. There is a little saying I sometimes use: “There is nothing that will happen to me today that God and I cannot handle”. God has given us a new year, by His grace let’s make it a good one!

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Just as the weather was heating up, so was the bowls at MBC this week. What a great night of social bowls was had by all on Wednesday, it is great to see so many new faces giving bowls a go and loving it. Why not come along and join the crew for a burger, bowls and beer on tap. All folks welcome and a guaranteed game. Forty people can't be wrong. Friday saw some great games of scroungers played in very warm weather. Mick Bulger showed great form and the word has it his good form will be caught up with by the handicapper. Other winners were Jim King back from touring

Range Maleny Croquet Club Contributed by Donna Manning Thursday, January 17 saw several players enjoying perfect conditions to engage in association croquet. Donna Manning and Kath Smith took on the wily Nick Cram, while Frances Harper generously assisted two newer members, Gillian Bradley and Bev Sockhill, in a coaching/ competitive game. Nick initially had Donna and Kath on the run, but the women eventually got the upper hand, and the end result was 16-7. Sunday, January 20 had three senior players play a two-hour game, shortened due to the hot weather. Nick Cram played the single against Vince Carbery and Donna Manning. As expected

and showing good bowls form. Ben Fawns was a first up winner in a very close game and a top last bowl. Relma Godfrey shows continued good form this season .Well done Relma, while Miles Allen gets a win and a new handicap that only Dave Burgess can appreciate. As they say it's tough at the top. Thanks to all who have played bowls during the week and supported the club, including the full rink of pairs on Monday. Get in early for this popular game, a call to the club will guarantee you a start. Book in for February now. What a great start to 2019, got to love the buzz around the club.

with division two players, strategy was a large part of the game. However, Donna initially “couldn’t hit a barn door with a packet of peas”, as the old saying goes, and had to rely on her partner to score hoops. Nick cruised around the lawn, making 11 hoops before his opponents managed to sneak past him and finish with 12 hoops. The club plays on Thursdays and Sundays, 2pm for a 2.30pm start. Anyone who wants coaching can turn up at 8am on Saturdays, or can liaise with one of the several coaches to organise another time to practise. Newcomers can have six lessons for $20, with this amount taken off the joining fee if they become members.

Just for Laughs A trip to the vet

A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. "My dog is cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?" the man asks. "Well I'm not sure," says the vet, "let's have a look at him." So the vet picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then he checks his teeth. Finally, the vet says: "I'm going to have to put him down." "What? Because he's cross-eyed?" "No, because he's really heavy."

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 As the Moon is in the sign of Sagittarius until the weekend you may feel mysteriously drawn to someone. Mysterious charms bring a perfume to the air, and you can enjoy them over a lunchtime or evening meal. Perhaps a big announcement or great idea from a friend. Also, enjoyment of a new high-tech gadget. Afternoon surprises! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Everyone seems to be getting along better in relationships but you may find that someone’s behaviour could be getting under your skin. Discussions are fruitful. Information becomes available that makes decision making easy. Do not stay in the background. It is important for you to get a conversation going. Join a like-minded group. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 There may be a moody atmosphere caused by someone’s “big noting”. Yes, underneath the Moon in the sign of Sagittarius there usually is a conflict of feelings, or differences of opinion. Great news comes from afar about a trip that buoys your mood and makes for congenial mutual adventures. A fun-loving adventure arrives. CANCER June 24 - July 22 If you are in an emotional stalemate with anyone, it may be time to be explicit about your feelings. So see if you can have a dialogue that is open minded and not stubborn. Keep your feelings under control this week so as to maintain good relations in both the public and private realms this week. Major step forward with a partner.

her not to get her hopes up for her birthday. "After all," he said, "the celebrations are only going to last half a minute." "What are you talking about?" she said. "It's your thirty second birthday."

Excellent logic

I picked up a hitch-hiker. He seemed like a nice bloke. After a few miles, he asked me if I wasn't afraid that he might be a serial killer? I told him that the odds of two serial killers being in the same car at the same time were highly unlikely. He got out at the next stop.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You have the luckiest days that may even inspire you to take extra tickets in the local lottery! This is because the Moon is in your sign and inspires enthusiastic talks that build to happy and joyful days. Take concrete steps forward with your dreams and goals, as happy surprises come to you. Mercury facilitates promising travel. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The last week of this month sees a Mars/ Jupiter aspect emphasising leadership. You now have strong Capricorn planets encouraging you to live in the present and writing down your priorities. See if you can allow time for meditation as on the 31st a Saturn/Neptune aspect encourages creative expression. Start planning on finances. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Mars and Pluto are influences causing power struggles this week. So just be patient and compromise. It’s time to appreciate the outdoors so view all landscapes with joy of being alive to see the beauty of nature. Positive news encourages recent social connections. These are a few days of happy connections and having joyful friends. PISCES February 20 - March 20 There is a high degree of financial planning as your sign receives the challenge by the Moon in Sagittarius to align reality with your goals. A strong Jupiter influence brings compliments for jobs well done. Even Saturn and Neptune are in aspect at month’s end to bring you praise for trouble shooting abilities. Good researching times!

LEO July 23 – August 22 A joint decision or declaration brings you right into a partner’s close world. As there is a playful, adventurous Sagittarius Moon through until the weekend, take pleasures galore as there is a friendly upbeat vibe around dinner functions. Your home scene fares better with improvements and renewed affections particularly early evening. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 It may be tempting to steer clear of weekend shopping trips as there is no need for you to snare a bargain. Up to and including the weekend don’t force an issue with a friend or a relative. Better to have a dialogue with questions, so that participants can move things forward. Do jobs that require precision or attention to details now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Forces conspire you to bring up the deepest feelings in a relationship. Just keep trusting your instincts about a purchase or financial matter. A creative or recreational experience with a friend brings out the finest qualities of unity. By month’s end Venus warms your sector of communication and arranges meetings inspired by others. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Definitely skip forcing any issues with family or friends, as nobody feels like losing. It is worth your while to try to be diplomatically convincing. The last quarter Moon places you in the role of mentor, offering excellent advice. Work on a practical assessment for finances as the Moon joins Jupiter in your income sector.

He enjoys sharing this professional knowledge with his patients to assist improving quality of life for all. David said their aim is to provide a comprehensive service to the local community for many years to come.

Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and to retain those

annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a postgraduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.

Dr Tiffany Chan Dr Tiffany Chan qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool UK in 2010 and upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in putting

people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Tiffany has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia.

Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to Indigenous communities.

Shirly is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, esthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.

Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his dental degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Raj has particular passions for endodontic (root canal treatment) and

orthodontic (braces). He is doing additional training in orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.
