Hi Everyone
L
ast week I had the opportunity to head along to the Embracia Aged Care Facility in Beerwah to the 102nd birthday celebrations of long-time resident Toni Woods. And while Toni’s memory isn’t what it used to be, it was lovely to see the effort that the staff and volunteers had gone to for the special event. However what really struck me was the genuine feeling of love in the room, and how much the staff, volunteers and other residents admired Toni and were pleased to be there to celebrate with her. See story page 7. Regards,

Bells Creek and Roys Road upgrades continue to be aware of the lowered speed limits through the work zones. Closer to Beerwah, Council have completed a long overdue realignment of the Roys Road and Burys Road junction. The $1.3 million intersection improvement will vastly improve safety for road users, and is part of an overall Roys Road upgrade associated with the works being undertaken on the Bruce Highway. As part of the project, Council collaborated with the Sunshine Coast University (USC) to install sensors in the road to measure factors influencing stress and strain of the pavement surface. Under the guidance of John Yeaman, Professor of Civil Engineering Construction at USC, a final year civil engineering student is measuring and assessing the factors influencing the condition of the bitumen pavement of the road. The research is looking to better understand the rate of pavement deterioration given various environmental and usage conditions. Ultimately, the findings will go towards informing further high level research, with the aim of being able to better predict when road surfaces get to the point of failure – i.e. forming pot holes – and so be able to maintain them just before they get to the point where the repairs become major and more expensive.
The project to improve the safety for locals and visitors who need to get on or off the Bruce Highway, and for the residents who live down both Bells Creek Road and Roys Road, is motoring along well, according to a Main Roads spokesperson. “We are well advanced on the $80.7 million project to build a new interchange on the Bruce,” they said. “The construction began in late October 2013 and is on track for completion mid-2015. “Work to resurface Coochin Road between Bells Creek Road and Roys Road is underway and should be completed late July 2014, weather permitting. Coochin Road is closed while the resurfacing work is underway. Excavation and embankment works are continuing on Roys Road. “Works to prepare the Bruce Highway centre median for safe traffic use during future bridge works have begun and should be completed by late July 2014.” With the development of Caloundra South, the interchange will serve as a main exit for the development which will see 50,000 new residents living within the brand new community. In the meantime, Main Roads are asking drivers

Flowers from the shrub have formed part of the bride's bouquet because of a family custom to include them in flower arrangements at times of family celebrations, as a reminder that the freedoms we take for granted were secured for us by all of those who fought in the two World Wars. The bride, Malin Eck of Gothenburg in Sweden, married Mrs Macdonald's great-grandson Malcolm Mcnab who regularly spent time in his school holidays enjoying time on the family farm. Malcolm and Malin will make their home in London for the time being, returning to Australia each year to see family and friends. However, at the reception Malcolm said that when they returned permanently to Australia, if one of the houses on the family farm wasn't available, he and Malin had already picked out a site on the farm where they would build a cottage.

Halls Creek or Beerwah East … GCNews has committed to bringing you informed and relevant commentary to the Halls Creek and Beerwah East urban development proposal
discussion. Over the coming weeks, a number of interested parties who have a particular concern in the debate will be presenting their points of view.
... from Stockland’s point of view by Ben Simpson, Regional Manager Residential, Stockland
Stockland has a long-term investment in the Coast, and our team works on the Coast and lives on the Coast, so we appreciate the opportunity to be involved in the conversation about the Coast’s future. Some people are asking why we need to have this conversation at all, but the SEQRP anticipates that the Sunshine Coast will grow from 170,000 people to around 508,000 people by 2031. Stockland’s combined residential developments across the entire Sunshine Coast have provided new homes for over 5,000 Sunshine Coast families over the last 10 years. Our future community at Caloundra South is a Priority Development Area (PDA), which will cater to some of the projected growth; however, it will only produce around 20 per cent of the coast’s future housing needs. Caloundra South will ultimately create approximately 20,000 new homes, together with business parks, a new town centre and retail centre, parks and sports fields and a dedicated conservation area. There’s a strong case for eventually integrating this infrastructure and
amenity with future development at Halls Creek, when the need arises, as it directly adjoins Caloundra South. Environmental responsibility and water management - Despite the naming convention, it’s worth noting that Halls Creek does not actually run through our property, and the site is at least 1.6 kilometres from the Pumicestone Passage, at its closest point. If Halls Creek is deemed suitable for future development, we will ensure a best practice approach to urban stormwater treatment and management. Part of our proposal would also see us rehabilitate a 400-hectare conservation area, representing approximately one-third of the Halls Creek site. By restoring this degraded grazing land, we will create a natural buffer zone of at least 3 kilometres between any homes and the Pumicestone Passage, effectively expanding the Pumicestone Passage Major Bio-Regional Corridor that adjoins the site. Stockland supports the inter-urban break Stockland recognises and supports the strong community consensus advocating for the
retention of the inter-urban break between Brisbane and Caloundra. The Halls Creek site is located at least 1.7 kilometres from the Bruce Highway, so not only would the inter-urban break be retained from the point of view of motorists travelling along the Bruce Highway, but we would also investigate the best ways to make land available to the community for tourism and recreational use. Stockland has a long history of working to protect, promote and enhance the lifestyle that makes the Sunshine Coast unique. We invest a great deal of time and energy to ensure our communities develop a unique character with their own distinct look and feel. It’s important to us - and we know that it’s important to the community - that any new development retains and enhances the qualities that make the Coast so special, different and distinct from Brisbane and surrounding areas. Halls Creek community open days - As part of the merits-based assessment process for Halls Creek, we’re inviting the community to participate in our Halls Creek Community Open Days on Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24. The Open Days will include 4WD transportation and a guided tour of the Halls Creek site. Subject to community interest, tours will be conducted at 10.00am and 12.30pm on both days. Participants are invited to register at www. caloundrasouthhallscreek.com.au, where further information on the site can also be found.
In mid-August, local State members Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle will be holding ‘information booths’ in the foyer of the Beerwah library, they will include displays of large maps of both sites, FAQ handouts and a survey calling on residents to have their say. Dates and times are Thursday, August 14 and 21, 10.00am-12.00noon and Thursday, September 4, 11, 18 and 25, 10.00am-12.00noon.
Batgirl’s advice on why paid advertising works!
Business feature
Too often I see properties that are under marketed and therefore sell for less than they should. It frustrates me because as a Real Estate Agent I am engaged to get you the Highest Possible Price, and I believe all agents should have this mantra. The way to do it? Paid advertising! With seven seconds to make an impression on buyers, only the best presented properties will make an impact – generally created by one thumbnail sized photo and one headline of text. So when an owner makes the decision not to engage a professional photographer, or hasn’t been given the option by the agent, what impact does this have on their properties online presence? It won’t ‘pop’ on the page, it won’t draw the buyer’s eyes and it won’t make the all-important great first impression. This leads to lower numbers of buyers enquiring about the property, less buyer competition at open homes, private viewings, and during negotiations, which leads to less $$$ in the owners pocket at the end of the day. This is just the first of many reasons why paid advertising works, and it could be much cheaper than you think. As for why owners should be paying the advertising and agents shouldn’t be winning listings with ‘free advertising’, well that’s another conversation … Tamara can be contacted on 0435 849 580 or by email on tamara@laurieevans.com.au

As Spring is now only weeks away, Beerwah women can now benefit by the announcement of a half price membership deal for a short period of time. This promotion has been specially timed to coincide with Winter, according to Linda from Curves Beerwah. “Studies have shown that in winter, a person’s weight creeps up by around half a kilo. We invite all local women to begin the journey to better health today, by joining us at Curves.” “The Curves 30 minute circuit works every major muscle group and burns up to 2,000 kilojoules, and along with the latest technology Curves Smart, which is a personal coaching system, we will ensure that you get maximum benefits based on your specific fitness level,” Linda said. Also our members are loving all the NEW classes which help get members even better RESULTS, provides added value to membership, and motivates members to continue working out at Curves with more variety. “Importantly, membership also includes trained Curves coaches to teach, motivate and inspire women to achieve their health and weight-loss dreams.” Curves is committed to providing women with the tools necessary to empower them to living more fulfilling lives. Tulip stands tall The newest member of the giraffe family at Australia Zoo has been named Tulip, after a competition on Channel 7’s Sunrise television program. Mt Mellum local Bev McMahon’s entry was chosen from over 7,000 entries, as the name for the baby giraffe due to her “tall and spectacular” appearance and likeness to a tulip flower. Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin discussed potential names as a family until they agreed that ‘Tulip’ was the most suitable name for the new calf. Tulip was born at 4.30pm AEST on Thursday, July 10, to firsttime mother Sally at Australia Zoo. Weighing around 50 kgs and standing just under 2m tall – it is easy to see why she was given her name! Australia Zoo curator Kelsey Engle says that both mother and daughter are doing really well. Tulip has recently ventured outside, and has begun to nibble on some acacia leaves as she prepares to move onto Australia Zoo’s African Savannah in the coming weeks. Sally and Tulip will now be taking some precious time out to bond, but the public can stay up to date on all the news about Australia Zoo’s growing giraffe family at: www.australiazoo.com.au/giraffe

Recently there was a great birthday morning tea held at Embracia in Glasshouse Country Aged Care Home for long-time resident Toni Wood who reached her 102nd birthday. Toni became part of the resident community at Embracia in Glasshouse Country in 2007. Before that she’d lived alone for several years after her beloved husband Alan passed away. Toni is often asked, what is the secret to her long life? She reassuringly answers, to not worry about anything! Toni’s niece Bronwyn said, it’s due to the care that she has received. “As her niece and closest relative, I must emphasise that I believe her longevity is due to the loving care and support she receives at Embracia,” she said. “The wonderful carers have really drawn her out, and have gently eased her back into a full and satisfying routine of absorbing activities. “Her obvious happiness speaks volumes for the lovely life she is living, thanks to Embracia folk.” Bronwyn shares that it’s this passion and enthusiasm for life in all that Toni does, that contributes to her happy outlook. Toni used to enjoy a sherry before dinner, or an occasional gin and tonic - and the occasional shandy. As a younger woman, she played golf - again with the full passion that she brings to all her interests.

Soul of a Community On Saturday, July 18 mid-afternoon, I was making my way on my little tractor (without my artificial legs on) to my neighbours to paint the ends of a very large hoop-pine tree he had felled. To my surprise, my mobile rang and it was my neighbour calling me as he ran down my driveway. One of his large paper bark trees had come down as a result of the very strong dry winds we were having, and it had knocked down our power lines in our lower paddock. The downed power lines were catching the dry grass on fire and flames were starting to spread very quickly.
“
... my neighbour calling me as he ran down my driveway.
My neighbour shut off the fuse on our property's feeder pole, whilst I spoke to 000. After a few attempts, I managed to get in touch with the wife and daughter via mobile and was relieved to learn they were just evacuating out the back blocks with all our important papers which we store in our emergency box, the dogs / guinea pigs, and bird, my prosthesis, and spare clothes. There was a bit of a break in the smoke and I noticed the very large fallen paperbark was blocking the driveway. This was a serious problem as there would be no way for the fire brigade to gain immediate access.
Contributed by Kelvin Mickelson
I called up our neighbouring local quarry, Hanson’s, and asked them to send their biggest front loader – as soon as possible. Within minutes, a loader the size of four Land Cruisers was barrelling down our driveway and proceeded to clear the large paper bark from the driveway. After clearing the tree, the loader reversed off the driveway to give a clear run to the fire pumper truck which had just arrived at the top of our driveway. The pumper made its way around the property to put itself between our building and the fire. Three local volunteer fire brigades and another pumper then joined in to bring the fire under control – it was all very quickly and professionally orchestrated. It was after 4.00pm and with the fire under control, I contacted a local power pole installation contractor and whilst I was talking with him about getting new poles and such, the linesman from Energex came to consult with me. Talk about good timing as I handed them the phone and he explained, in technical detail, to the contractor the infrastructure that had been damaged. The linesman confirmed with me all lines were power safe and they would be more than happy to assist the contractor at any time. Then to top it all, a friend of ours from town had seen the smoke coming from our direction and in his concern about our safety, made his way on foot through the back blocks to our place to
ensure I was safe. It is now 12.00noon the next day, July 19, as I sit writing this account. The fire is out, power poles have been replaced, road is open, no other property damage, power is back on, nothing left to repair - girls are off to soccer.
“
Within minutes, a loader the size of four Land Cruisers was barrelling down our driveway and proceeded to clear the large paper bark ...
You may be wondering what does this have to do with my title ‘soul of a community’? Well here is the way I see it - you recall seeing the people around town, many you don't know who they are, you may not even know their names - but in this story when I called out for help, it did not matter that I did know their names – they downed tools and helped. With the horrific tragedies which make our headlines recently, it is refreshing to know kindness is truly alive within our fellow people and community. That is pretty darn special. In no order of importance, to the champions from Hanson’s, Energex, Caboolture Fire, Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade, Peter Chapman, and Peter Snowdon - without you, this story may have had a different ending. Thank you all.

Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade robbed again Contributed by Lou Spann On the morning of Saturday, July 19, the Beerwah RFB was broken into at 4.40am. The low life who broke in was surprised when the alarm continued to sound even after they thought they had cut the power to the station.
Four brand new Stihl Chainsaws were stolen by thieves who knew exactly how to gain station access, where the chainsaws were stored and had specialist cutting tools to cut them out. The chainsaws are all registered through the Australian Stihl registry network thanks to Beerwah Small Engines. Special thanks to DC Alarms, Beerwah Locksmiths and Craig Young Electrical in Landsborough for getting us secured again. pers The Station alarm has now been upgraded to include sophisticated ailers surveillance cameras and 24 hour monitoring. All of this has been a huge iors expense as well as the loss of $4,400 worth of chainsaws to the Brigade lstery which gets its funding from the fire levy and public donations. nopies Awnings The Council has said that it will be making the area more secure through high security fences. s If anybody has any information we urge them to contact the Beerwah Police on 5436 5222.

The night will kick off at 5.30pm with rides starting at 6.00pm and going on until 9.00pm. The aim of our fundraiser this year is to equip each classroom with high quality air-conditioning, this will improve our student's learning outcomes and working conditions for our staff. The school has obtained quotes for this work and we need $38,000.00 which is a great deal for a small school. So this is why we are looking toward to the wider community to help us to get to our goals. Tickets are available online by heading to stickytickets and typing in Aussie World by Night or alternatively going to our school webpage www. Glasshousemountainsss.eq.edu.au and clicking on the Sticky Ticket link. If you are unable to access tickets online please ring the school office on 5439 3222 for more details, we can organise tickets for you if necessary. If you are unable to attend, but would like to donate to our great cause, there is a donation button on the Sticky Tickets website for your convenience. In the near future we will have volunteers asking local businesses for donations in product and or services that we can use to raffle on the night, any donations will be acknowledged in flyers and advertising for and on the night. If this does not suit your business maybe you could promote our Sticky Ticket link on your own business website or on social media? It will all be greatly appreciated by our school. Thanks to our supportive community in advance.

Community News Do you recognise this tractor?
It’s similar to the old Fordson outside the Landsborough Historical Museum. It’s a Model F, around 70-years-old, and has been with the museum since 1994, when it was rescued from a paddock outside Maleny. Sadly, it’s showing its age and some parts, in particular the rear wheels, are deteriorating badly. If you know of another of these machines, maybe forgotten in a shed or a paddock somewhere, which might be used for spares, the museum would love to hear from you. We had a busy couple of weeks during the school holidays and are now working on redesigning some of our displays, and preparing for a series of exhibitions as part of the ongoing World War I commemorations. Meanwhile, our current exhibition ‘A Letter Home’ is continuing to bring visitors to the museum. As always we welcome new volunteers; if you are interested just call in or phone the museum on 5494 1755.

Quilting helps kids at risk
Last Wednesday at the Mountain Quilters Friendship Day they presented Sunny Kids with a cheque for $4,000.00. The funds were raised from a raffle they held in the lead up to, and at their recent biannual Quilt Show at the Peachester Hall. Helen Haley, the representative from Sunny Kids, was quite overcome with emotion when she saw the amount the Past President Chris Harvey precheque was for. senting the cheque to Helen Haley She explained to the group what a from Sunny Kids with Ann Dunne valuable difference those funds can make to the services and support the organisation provides to local families and children. Sunny Kids is a Sunshine Coast based charity that provides emergency accommodation for women facing domestic violence and working with local schools to support the children at risk. The creation of the quilt that was raffled was very much a group effort with many of the members participating in the process. The beautiful quilt was entered into the Queensland Quilting awards and received second prize which was a significant achievement for the club. So not surprisingly the dedicated group members were able to sell a huge amount of raffle tickets to generate the generous donation to a very worthy cause.

Koala poo detected locally
A couple of weeks ago, GCNews brought you the story of Maya, the world’s only koala poo detection dog. The good news is she is already proving her worth, tracking down the cute and cuddly creatures’ presence on three Sunshine Coast Council reserves including two in Glasshouse Country at Peachester, and Glenview. Senior conservation partnerships officer Julie O’Connor said Maya’s work was a vital part of the council’s koala conservation program funded through the environment levy. “We are really pleased to have found proof that koalas are still in those reserves,” Julie said. “Knowing where our koalas are on the Sunshine Coast is essential if we are to identify area-specific threats and impacts and develop the conservation measures to save the koalas.

Good start at small school
Guest speaker at the PHC meeting on Sunday, August 3, will be John Egerton. He was a student at Peachester State School in the 1940s, and went on to study veterinary science, eventually holding the post of Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Sydney. John credits his primary education at this small country school as an important foundation for his interesting and successful career. His talk on Sunday will cover the various stages of his life, from Peachester School to Nambour High School, the University of Queensland, working as a vet officer in Papua New Guinea and as a scientist with CSIRO, to his leadership role at the University of Sydney. John's parents Jack and Dolly Egerton came as share farmers to a farm at Peachester in 1942. Their four sons, Bill, Henry, Jim and John all attended the local school, went on to further study and different careers, and between them have notched up a remarkable list of achievements. Bill became a doctor and was eventually a vascular and transplant surgeon at Royal Brisbane Hospital. Henry was a teacher and later inspector in PNG, then worked in the Education Department in Canberra. Jim became a roof tiler and worked successfully in this trade for 50 years. Remarkably, two Egerton brothers have been recognised with AMs (Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia) in the Australia Day Honours. 1998: Dr William Sydney Egerton, for service to medicine as a vascular surgeon and a medical educator; and 2014: Emeritus Professor John Ross Egerton, University of Sydney, for significant service to the livestock industry, particularly the eradication of infectious disease, and to education. John currently lives in Sydney, and PHC members are looking forward to his visit to Peachester on Sunday. He says that he will share memories from his life and career to illustrate how important the first stage (Peachester School) was to his brothers and himself. The meeting will be held at Peachester Hall from 11.00am, and includes a shared lunch as usual. Visitors welcome.

Opposite Lock
Torquegas Torquegas Conversions is a family owned and run business which has been operating in Caloundra for over 23 years. Owner Ron has over 30 years experience in the LPG industry. He is a well-known identity within the trade, being a current member of Gas Energy Australia, and the first president of the Australian Automotive Gas Fitters Association. From humble beginnings installing conversions in a two-man business, he has expanded to be one of the leaders in a strong and rapidly growing industry. His son's Nick and Andrew are also involved in the day-to-day running of Torquegas. They sell conversion and wholesale kits to fitters around Australia. With a modern well-equipped workshop and approximately eight staff, they only take a day to carry out an install. Torquegas continues to embrace change, and continuously strives to become world leaders in the supply and export of their equipment worldwide from Caloundra. LPG autogas is 'today’s fuel for a cleaner tomorrow'.
Opposite Lock Sunshine Coast franchise is owned and run by the well known Flanigan family, headed by Ron and Lynda. Ron says the main reason he became an Opposite Lock franchisee was not only due to the great products they manufacture and sell, it’s the warranty they can now offer. Opposite Lock has over 54 stores Australiawide and all the products that Opposite Lock use and fit come with the two year Australia-wide warranty. “As part of Opposite Lock Australia our customers can go away on their remote adventures with the peace of mind our warranty can now give them. It’s good to know they have someone to turn to, wherever they venture,” Ron said. With a modern workshop, Dynamometer and six hoists, Ron can conduct almost any repair including the custom fabrication and manufacture of any specialised customer needs. So for all your 4WD and vehicle accessory needs, you can visit them at Latcham Drive or call them today for a free 148 page catalogue, and GET OFFROAD!

TESTIMONIAL In 2003 KLM purchased a used 1998 ISUZU NPR400 which had travelled approximately 100,000 klm, but was in very good condition. We purchased this vehicle for delivering domestic LP Gas cylinders, this required some highway running but mostly suburban work, stopping more than 40 times a day. Each day the vehicle starts its run with near to maximum load capacity and being a non-turbo model it wasn’t long before the driver was complaining about the lack of power. As the vehicle was in good condition we decided to try to solve this problem. We were doing some business with Torquegas and Ron Flanigan heard we were having some power issues with this vehicle. After talking to Ron we looked at our options of either fitting a turbo or LPG. Fitting the LPG has turned out to be a very wise move, not only did we pick up the extra power our driver was looking for, but it has also improved the economy of the vehicle. In addition we believe the LPG is helping to increase the life of the motor and our service mechanic is always amazed at how clean the oil is during changes. We would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone LPG over diesel and Ron and his team at Torquegas. Regards,
Kel McNamara KLM Energy Services Glass House Mountains

5000 Poppies Project
Australia is commemorating the Anzac Centenary (2014 to 2018), marking 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War and 2015 marks 100 years since the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli. From its association with poppies flowering in the spring of 1915 on the battlefields of Belgium, France and Gallipoli, the poppy has become a symbol of both great loss in war and hope for those left behind. As part of the 2015 Anzac Commemoration, the 5000 Poppies project will be ‘planting’ a field of more than 5000 poppies in Federation Square in Melbourne as a stunning visual tribute to Australian servicemen and women. Beerwah Library is inviting all crafters to participate in this heartfelt project by hand making one or more poppies. They can be crocheted, knitted, felted or sewn from any materials. Any shade of red can be used and poppies should be no more than 15 cm in diameter. There is no entry fee however contributors are asked to provide their own materials. There is no barrier to involvement and no limit to the amount of poppies that can be submitted.
Peachester Playgroup re-vamped!
The poppies will go on display at Beerwah library between October 20 – and November 11. Afterwards Poppies will be sent to the 2015 Remembrance Day celebration in Melbourne. Beerwah Library is also hosting two workshops one on Tuesday, August 19, from 2.30pm 5.00pm which is being hosted by the Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters then on Thursday, September 25 from 9.30am - 11.00am. Make a felt Poppy for the Remembrance Day display in the library, and one to take home. The workshops are free. However bookings are essential. The Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters and Embracia Retirement Village have already donated a significant number of poppies.
Great prizes in the multi-draw raffle The Beerwah Charity Sports day is now only three weeks away. This year the major raffle running in conjunction with the Sports Day features three main prizes. These are a large wheelbarrow filled with all manner of products, a child’s bicycle and a fitness voucher from Maximise Health and Fitness in Beerwah. The holder of the ticket drawn first will have first choice of three, holder of the second draw a choice of two.
Mens Shed to move on
By Lea Parkes In the past decade Mens Shed have been popping up all over Australia and not quite five years ago, discussion was underway about how Glasshouse Country could establish our own Mens Shed. Bob McLean who was Rotary’s Community Service Director at the time got talking to Trish Cashin the Manager of Community Recycling about the need for this type of facility in our local area. A meeting was held at the Beerwah library to see what the level of interest would be locally, and over 20 people came along that night with plenty of ideas and enthusiasm. And the rest as they say – is history. As there wasn’t any funding for the project Community Recycling Inc supplied the equipment required to set up the workshop along with materials for projects and uniforms and Sunshine Coast Council supported the initiative and as the group grew and acquired more resources Rotary purchased a shipping container for storage. So for the past four and a half years on Wednesday morning between 8.30am and 12.30pm local men have come along and shared their skills, worked on projects with other fellas and enjoyed some fellowship.

Tickets are only $2.00 and are already being sold around the district. Additionally there will be a stall outside Woolworths Beerwah for the next three Fridays and Saturdays. And naturally, tickets will be on sale at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, August 23, where the raffle will be drawn during the afternoon. Check us out on Facebook at Beerwah Charity Sports Day. And remember, all the proceeds of the Sports Day go to Cancer Council Queensland.
The men have always appreciated the efforts of Community Recycling Inc and have been happy to share the workshop with the men’s group that use it on Tuesday and Thursday to repair, value add and upcycle the items that are sold on Saturday and Thursday in the Recycle Market. Over time, they’ve always hoped to one day have their own purpose-built facility which would give them the opportunity to expand the range and frequency of activities they could provide their members. So when Glasshouse Country Care approached the Mens Shed with the offer to build a shed for them on their property on Peachester Road, the fellas jumped at the offer. Recently I caught up with Trish Cashin and she said that she was really pleased that the Mens Shed are able to move onto the next stage of their plans. “It was great to have been part of establishing the Mens Shed and it has been really good to see the positive benefits that getting involved has brought to many of the members,” she said. “While the space and support that we have provided over the years has allowed the group to grow and develop, having their own purpose-built space will no doubt encourage them to take on new projects and challenges.” On Saturday, at Country Care’s Open Day, the new shed will be officially opened and then the guys will have the task of fitting it out, so they will probably have it operational by the end of the month. Once the shed is open for business GCNews will catch up with Mens Shed President Bob Carruthers and bring you a story about how they plan to go forward into the future and what some of the new initiatives they will be offering will be.
Come along and see the changes we’ve made to Peachester Playgroup! Over the past 12 months playgroup families have been busy transforming the area into a lovely, clean, landscaped place for children to play. Earthworks have helped to open the play area up and new turf has been laid. Brand new shade cloth over the sandpit, a new water tank and some new gardens have really given our lovely playgroup a boost. The last 12 months also saw the playgroup receive a grant allowing us to purchase a whole stack of brand new toys! And of course we still have our fantastic outdoor playground, sandpit and weekly craft activities. We would like to say a huge thank you to Savage Landscapes in Landsborough for donating many of the materials needed to landscape this area. Thank you also to all our beautiful playgroup families who have all pitched in to get the work done! Peachester Playgroup meets every Tuesday (during the school term) 9.15am until 11.30am behind the Uniting Church. Come along and say hi. Your first two visits are free! For more information contact Carrie on 0434 817 301.

By Lea Parkes These days chefs are like rock stars of the kitchen, and if the results from the recent Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge Sunshine Coast are anything to go by – there are a number of local students who Jamie Oliver should be keeping his eye on. The competition was organised by the Australian Culinary Federation and aims to strengthen links between the hospitality industry and schools and encourage school leavers to consider a future in the industry. Teams of Year 10 students from across the coast prepared their dishes using the ingredients nominated by the Culinary Federation. The students competed in teams of two and were judged against a strict set of criteria. Each team had 90 minutes to prepare their meal and plate-up in readiness for tasting by the judges. This year’s overall winners across the Sunshine Coast region were Lani Kombanie and Michaela Lal from Glasshouse Country Christian College and the runner-ups were Jess Lee and Abbey Shaw of Beerwah State High School, seems we are setting a pretty high standard in our neck of the woods. Also taking out bronze medals on the day were Chantal Howarth and Bailey Townsend from the Christian College and Cailie Sager and Hayley McKenzie from Beerwah High. The competition saw students from seven high schools go head to head, so it was great to see our local students stamping their mark on the event. The top two teams will represent the Sunshine Coast at the Queensland Final at the EKKA on August 16 and could win a prize of $700.00 each and $2,000.00 for their school – good luck to both our local teams!

to the challenge
Last Friday, Beerwah State High School inducted its new student leaders for 2014 / 15. Students from Years 8 and 9, as well as Year 11, pledged that they would uphold and build on the spirit of Beerwah SHS and encourage, enthuse and empower fellow students to make a positive contribution to both the school and the wider community. Real estate news By Mark Buchan - Senior Property Manager I have the best job in the world! I wake up every morning and can’t wait to get to work! No, I’m not a professional baby Panda patter, I’m a Property Manager. What makes my job so good? Simply the organisation I work for. At Elders Palmwoods, our Principal Mike Burns believes that people make the difference. He has confidence in his staff and our Landlords trust us. What more could I ask for? As a career Property Manager, the number one question people ask is “is property investment worthwhile?” Well the short answer is yes how successful it is, depends on the Property Management team you choose. In a nut shell, our role is to increase the wealth of our Landlords and there are various ways in which this is achieved. So we all know that a poorly selected tenant can cost an investor as much as $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 per annum, so it’s easy to see why tenant selection is critical. So you need the right tenant, I guess what I really mean is a good tenant. I know, I know… we are all good tenants, right? Wrong. You see, applying for a property is a bit like applying for a job. My resume tells everyone that I’m the best Property Manager this side of the black stump, it’s only once you employ me that you realise I’m not up to scratch. Hence, you only know if the applicants are good, once they move in.
So what makes a good tenant? You need someone who has a history of being responsible in relation to paying the rent on time and taking good care of your property. Now all agents have an application process which includes checking the applicant’s rental history, the national data base, confirming employment and pay, calling references and validating ID. That is all standard operating procedure, but there is more that can be done to confirm that they are generally good tenants; call me to discuss this further. An indication of the success of this system is in our tenants. Our tenants are friendly, cooperative people who pay their rent on time and treat the property like it was their own. Other ways the right Property Manager increases your property wealth is ensuring property upkeep is proactive in relation to maintenance / servicing of fixtures fitting / gutters / pest control and the like. This will also save money down the track. Finding active termites (as bad as that is) at your property now is better than finding them in 12 months time. Having a depreciation schedule on your property will also reduce your tax. Now I know that what I have just told you, you may have heard before, but let me ask you a question. “When did your Property Manager last ring up just to touch base, give you a market update and ask if there is anything else they can do for you?” I would guess never.
You know why, because they are simply too busy. Yep, remember folks you heard it from me first! You see the problem with Property Managers is that generally they are overloaded; they have too many properties and hence cannot service all their landlords. Everyone has a different figure for how many properties can be effectively managed. So one of the most important questions you should ask any prospective organisation prior to asking them to manage your property is how many do they currently manage? If you are looking for an exceptional Property Management team, please chat with us, you will not be disappointed! Ok, so what are we all about? Our Property Management team at Elders Palmwoods is Mark Buchan and Judi Brown. While our newly rebranded Elders Woombye office has Jamie Jacobs and Candice Plant. Our aim is to offer you good old fashioned service across the board. We look forward to hearing from you!

School News Stage 3 of forest walk is in... Contributed by Andrea Balcombe - Peachester P & C Over the past three years, Peachester State Primary School has taken part in National Tree Planting Day on a grand scale and this year was no exception. Parents and students had a fantastic day of fun on Wednesday planting 200 native trees forming the 3rd stage of the school’s native forest tree walk. The forest regeneration project has a strong focus on and around aboriginal bush tucker trees and sustaining local wildlife. The Peachester School community would like to thank the generous contributions received from the local business community. Huge thanks to Mooloolah Land Care for the many species of native trees planted on the day, the Peachester Mill providing us with ample stakes for support and identification and Coochin Creek Co-op for the fertiliser, ensuring our little trees the best start possible. Thanks also to Mrs Robb for her tireless efforts and passion for the project. Each year every child plants a tree and this year the children took special interest when
Preps Jade and Amber planting their first trees choosing their tree species. Some wanting to ensure food for the local koala population by planting Eucalyptus propinqua or potential bush tucker tree's like the black plum for future use in the school kitchen. As the forest grows the tracks between the trees will be joined to form a full circuit walk with identifiers along the way explaining each tree’s value and use. With time and TLC from the Peachester School children there will be a magnificent forest walk of mixed local natives to wander through, alive with wildlife ready to foster future learning about the environment and our native land.
Beerwah State School Year 4 students participated in a bike skills course on Wednesday, June 11 and Friday, June 13 on the school grounds. They learned how to check their bikes using the ABCD method by checking for Air, Brakes, Chain and Direction of handlebars. Students also learned how to safely wear their helmet and understood how important it was to protect their brains. Skills were taught and practised so that students could: ride in a straight line, turn corners, look behind to check for cars or other bikes, steer around obstacles, ride safely over speed bumps, use STOP and GIVE WAY signs and negotiate low overhanging obstacles. Sunshine Coast Council offers this course to Year 4 students to help prepare them for a lifetime of cycling fun and safety.
Landsborough State School Open Morning Landsborough State School will host an Open Morning on Wednesday, August 13 from 9.00am until 10.00am. Principal Kristy Walton warmly invites prospective parents and students to come and see for themselves all of the wonderful things on offer at the school. "We are a small school with just under 300 students. This fosters a supportive family-like learning environment that allows students to prosper both academically and socially," Ms Walton says. “Here, students are the centre of the learning. We dedicate time and energy to knowing what kind of a learner every student is so we can cater for him or her. “We also offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities such as lunchtime clubs, art, gardening, dancing, choir, swimming programs, outdoor organised games, instrumental music, excursions and camps.” The Open Morning events present the opportunity to meet the Principal, teachers, staff
and students, and to ask any questions you may have. You can view the facilities on offer at the school, see students engaged in their educational programs and the day-to-day operation of the school. Landsborough State School prides itself on its enthusiastic, happy and friendly atmosphere where every child has the right to learn and the right to feel safe and valued. The school has a strong emphasis on selfdiscipline within a framework of high behavioural expectations. In keeping with the school's motto 'Your Future, Our Focus' they strive to ensure that all staff and parents work together to provide the best possible educational outcomes for all students. Enrolments are currently being taken for next year in all year levels from Prep through to Year 6. Don't delay … ensure that you enrol your child today. For further information, contact the school on 5436 2777.
If you are unable to make the Open Morning, you can arrange to visit the school and look at the facilities at any time. Simply phone to make an appointment and they'll be happy to show you around.

Beerwah Pool Shop
Mitch King, owner of the new pool shop in Beerwah, is enjoying all the interest he’s creating. “As we are in such a prime location on the main street, we’ve had plenty of people stop and look in, eager to know what’s happening in their town,” he said. Mitch, along with his daughter Jess, and friend Madonna, are getting ready to offer Beerwah and surrounds a first-rate pool shop and expert service. After running his own lawn mowing business for several years, surgery forced Mick to rethink his career options. While in recovery, a good friend asked him to assist him on his pool round, and Mitch was hooked! While setting up his own Mountain Creek mobile pool service a year ago, he also listened to feedback and researched what was available in the Hinterland area. Mitch chose Beerwah as it’s such a growing neighbourhood, with the friendliness and beautiful countryside a bonus. “My background includes being a bricklayer as well as a transport manager, plus running my own business, so I’ve managed to tie that experience together with my mobile Mountain Creek pool service to create Beerwah Pool Shop,” he said, “and I have the added support of a friend with 15 years pool servicing and certificating experience, to assist with the mobile side of things too.” The team are pleased to be able to offer the best chemicals on the market, through BioGuard, as well as having well-known Kreepy Krauly and Aussie Gold supplying as well. Mitch, Jess and Madonna have all undertaken recent training on the latest equipment and chemicals available, to make sure they stay up-to-date and can offer the most appropriate advice and service. Mitch adds that with an opening special of 10% discount off everything in store for the whole of August, he invites readers to, “come to my shop, shop locally and give us a go – we can save you money,” he says.

Take matters into your own hands by contacting All Energy HQ today Like the rest of us, David and Christine from Glass House Mountains are concerned about increasing electricity costs. As a retired couple, they want to protect themselves against ongoing rising prices and so have decided to do something about it. They are the first people in the hinterland to install their own energy generation and storage system supplied by local company, All Energy HQ. There's a revolution on its way against electricity utilities and constantly rising energy costs, in the form of energy generation and storage. David and Christine are one of the early adopters with the purchase of their BYD Energy Hub. Living on a modest income, they are looking to protect their future and the effect of rising energy prices on their retirement income. By locking in energy costs, they are protecting their limited income from being eroded every year. This long-term strategy seeks to take back control from big electricity retailers, and to regain energy security. Around the world, the energy storage solution has begun, with predictions of 50% of the domestic market becoming self-sufficient for energy generation and storage by 2030. As people become more self reliant for their energy, electricity generator utilities will be forced to push prices higher and higher every year at
alarming rates as they struggle to maintain the revenue needed to maintain their overheads. Over the next 12 months, electricity retailers in Queensland will introduce, net real-time metering. This means paying much higher prices for electricity in early mornings and evening peak times. With a lesser cost on daytime usage while demand is lower, this will allow a greater opportunity to make even more savings by being self-sufficient for your own electricity generation and capture in your home. David and Christine are a great example of your average electricity consumer. Consider the research and take matters into your own hands by contacting All Energy HQ today.

Give your electricity company the flick Power prices are not likely to stop increasing. As you get older and leave the work force, you may well have difficulty paying your water rates and electricity bills. So you could almost flick the switch on your power bill by adding a BATTERY ENERGY HUB to your EXISTING solar system.
No tripping over the pile
This Energy Hub is not your normal floor covering pile of batteries that gather dust, rubbish and are easy to trip over. No, no … the Energy Hub looks just like an office four drawer filing cabinet and it is on wheels so if you did sell your house, you can wheel it out like the piano and take it with you. Almost EVERY existing solar system can have batteries. The Energy Hub fits almost 100% of existing solar systems and it is a plug and play installation. They just need to be out of the weather.
20 years life – 10 years warranty
Lithium-ion battery cells used in the Energy Hub have a 6000 cycle life. That is the equivalent to charging and discharging for over 16 years, every day and every night and even then, the wear and tear on the batteries has resulted in only a 20% reduction in stored capacity. That is why we say a 20 year life. The way power prices are skyrocketing, you will have it paid for in just a few years and you can almost totally give your power company the FLICK. No deposit finance is available, lease or rental, just like a personal loan at less than 10% interest. Phone one of our trained energy consultants, Leanne or Ian on 5438 7200. Remember at All Energy HQ we have been selling PV solar systems since 1989. We know the industry, the products and we know the manufacturers. We did not join the ‘solar rush’ once a Government Subsidy was offered. We were in solar for 18 years before that.
Leanne Hellmrich joins the All Energy HQ team at Glass House Mountains Leanne is a highly trained and experienced sustainability and energy efficiency consultant. Leanne assesses the power usage of both residential and commercial premises and advises on measures that can be taken which will reduce or shift power consumption.
With the right advice homes and businesses can be empowered to make informed decisions on installing solar power, knowing what savings can be achieved. All Energy HQ has finance options available for small or large home and business owners as an off balance sheet lease or rent, making it possible to pay off the system with the savings from the electricity produced.
This will maximise the benefits of installing solar power and assists you to make significant savings. Leanne holds dual Diplomas in Business and Management, and she has a passion for assisting local home owners and businesses to reduce overheads and increase profitability.

Think … reuse, separate, recycle
In the past when we did home renovations, no one would have batted an eyelid at ripping and smashing apart everything and just tossing the lot into one skip bin, with it all going to the tip to be dumped as landfill. Not any longer. While not every bit of demolition and construction material can – or even should – be recycled, up to 80% of the waste can be reused or recycled. The key to a successful renovation project is to reuse what you can, and recycle the rest. If you already have a lot of good quality materials and fixtures in the structures you’re replacing, there’s no need to destroy them only to purchase and replace them with exactly the same thing. By doing that you’ll not only save yourself good money by not having to buy new materials, you’ll also drastically reduce the amount of material that needs to go into landfill, meaning you’ll save lots more money in tipping fees. And if you can separate out the reusable and recyclable materials before taking it all to the local waste station, they’ll be able to take it to be recycled, or remade into something else, or resold in the recycling market. The Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre will take things like metal items and objects, reusable kitchen and bathroom fixtures and fittings, tiles and roofing iron, windows, doors and fittings, appliances, clean bricks and tiles, and more. The best way to work out what to do, is to talk with the staff, before you start work. They’ll let you know about what you can bring to them that won’t cost you a cent to drop off. And if you go there on a Thursday and Saturday, you’ll be able to have a look at their recycle market and get an idea of the things you may be able to buy from them for your renovation project. Remember – all the proceeds from the recycle market go back into our local community groups and organisations as donations and grants from Beerwah Community Recycling.
rday, Today and Tomorrow e t s e Y r te ng af i k o Lo
Time to clean out, clear up & recycle? Do the right thing! Why not donate those unwanted items to the recycle market? Did you know all profits from the Thursday and Saturday markets help fund local community groups & projects? Why not shop at your local resource recovery centre for your renovation supplies – including bulkier items such doors and sinks, located outdoors at the back of the market. Market operating hours are 9am - 2pm Thursday and Saturday at Beerwah Free mulch available – please contact the centre for information on loading times and delivery (fees may be applicable) Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre is run by Community Recycling Inc., which is a not for profit organisation supporting the local community.

investment will stand the test of time. Alf loves to say that he is “creating the antiques of the future.” Nothing frustrates Alf more than seeing people trying to do a project on the cheap, using a second-hand or flat-packed DIY kit. While being cheaper up front, they will end up costing you more over the long term, as constant fix-ups and possible restorations will be required. Again, Alf says if you are going to do a job, do it right the first time. Everything at A.K. Cabinets is custom-made to the highest quality standard, while keeping within a budget affordable to you. So, make sure you get a professional like Alf from A.K. Cabinets for your next project, whether it be a kitchen, bathroom, office, or piece of fine custom-made timber furniture.

Jaz Build – Sunshine Coast Custom Build Beerwah Electronics We were recently asked by friends to advise them on a plan for a new home. Sue and Steve provided us with a layout of a new build home that contained a large formal room. While it was grand indeed, was it really for them? Sue and Steve sat down and really considered their lifestyle and family needs. As a home is such a major investment, it may be worth talking to a builder direct and having a custom design that suits your individual needs. With our advice, they reevaluated and designed something to better reflect their personalities and lifestyle. Jaz Build is especially interested in helping families to achieve their dream home. We have an experienced design team who will guide you through the planning process and provide step-by-step support. On the Sunshine Coast we have access to glorious weather allowing us great outdoor living. Many new families moving to the area, especially those from colder countries like the UK or Europe, will tell you of the joy of living under blue skies. Some of our clients have made the most of their new lifestyle by adding a gazebo or an alfresco entertaining deck. Glass House Mountains with its magnificent views and world heritage listed conservation area is a well-known secret enjoyed daily by locals. Jaz Build is particularly happy to see local development in Glass House Village with the new Glass House Country Estate and has already spoken with the agent, Kelvin Brady, about future prospects and development. With Glass House Country Estate so well priced and in such a desirable area we are hoping to talk to prospective clients about their dream build. It is an opportunity to create a perfect lifestyle home in this stunning country region. Jaz build believes our local knowledge can provide good information and guidance to help new home builds with the design and building process.
Long term family owned and operated business, Beerwah Electronics, constantly strives to provide their customers with a friendly, helpful and efficient service. Originally opening in Beerwah in 1993 at the back of Retrovision, the business quickly expanded and so owners Garth and Julie relocated to their current shop Garth and Julie from Beerwah position in the Turner Park Shopping Electronics Complex in 1996. Starting his apprenticeship as a radio mechanic back in 1960, Garth brings a wealth of technical knowledge and expertise to the business. Supported by Julie and a team of technicians, the store is the authorised service centre for warranty services and repairs for most major electronic brands such as Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Sharp to name a few. As well as providing repairs (e.g. TV, DVD, VCR, microwaves, remote controls), they also focus on the installation of TV antennas and are always happy to provide service call outs where required. They also carry a large range of AV accessories such as HDMI cables and adaptors for customers wanting to connect existing systems. For the home renovator, Beerwah Electronics specialises in the setting up of the now popular media room which includes installation of home theatre setups, and wall and ceiling mounts for both TV’s and projectors. The recent change in Australian TV frequencies has resulted in an inundation of calls to the business. With over 150 calls to date, and numerous counter enquiries, the staff have been kept busy helping customers with free advice to assist in the retune. For those continuing to experience difficulties in the process or for those who just need some extra help, Garth and Julie have been happy to schedule call outs. Servicing an area from Morayfield to Maroochydore, and consistently strong supporters of local fundraising efforts, Beerwah Electronics have all your electronic needs covered with approachable staff, reliability and good old fashioned customer service.

Top 3 renovations to add value to your home Home renovations are notorious for going over-budget, so it’s unsurprising that many young families shy away from embarking on these projects. However, not only can renovations make your home more liveable in the short term - they can add value that will eventually help you in the long term. Plus, you don’t have to face the cost of your dream renovation alone. As long as you have equity in your property, you likely won’t have much trouble applying for a construction loan. Although there may be dozens of changes you want to make to turn your first home into your dream home, some renovations are more lucrative in the long run than others, and the outcome of your loan application will

Students celebrate macadamia industry’s birthday
More than 170 school children from Beerburrum State School helped celebrate the Australian macadamia industry’s 40th anniversary and National Tree Day last Friday, July 25, by planting five macadamia trees in their indigenous food garden. The school kids are participating in the Australian Macadamia Society’s 40th Anniversary Schools Project, where they are learning all about the iconic native macadamia nut and the important contribution the macadamia industry makes to the local Glass House Mountains community. Local macadamia grower Eileen Geeson went along to the school on Friday to help the children plant the trees and explained how to look after them. Eileen also spoke about her farm and the macadamia industry. “The Australian macadamia industry is turning 40, and we are celebrating the global success of our national nut by inviting schools located in our main macadamia growing regions to be part of the celebrations,” said AMS Market Development Manager Lynne Ziehlke. Schools have been invited to participate in a range of macadamia-themed activities - including colouring-in sheets, project packs, a fancy dress fundraising day or planting a macadamia tree. Beerburrum State School also cooked with macadamia nuts as part of their Stephanie Alexander Cooking Program. “Australia is the birthplace of macadamias and this year marks four decades of commercial production, dating back to when the Australian Macadamia Society, the industry body was established in 1974.” The first plantation was established in the 1880s, long before 1974, but it wasn’t until the introduction of mechanical processing that commercial production of the tough nut became feasible. “Australia now leads the world in kernel production and accounts for 30% of the world’s crop,” said Eileen with Aida, Corey, Jazmyn, Heath, Mia, Ms Ziehlke. Re: Save the Forrest, GCNews (July 16)
Off-road motorcycling enthusiasts and indeed the wider community have welcomed a proposed facility in the Mooloolah Logging Area. However, a small number of vocal detractors of the proposal are making false claims and spreading misleading information. The motivation for a facility such as this is to reduce the dangers and risks associated with current illegal riding in the Sunshine Coast’s national parks, state forests and other public land. Many people are riding illegally in these areas across the Sunshine Coast, which is placing them, and our environment, at risk. This facility would provide the opportunity for locals and others to enjoy their riding in a safe, well-managed, environmentally-sustainable and purpose-built facility, and importantly, take them out of our national parks. Suggestions that nearby plantation pine forests would be a more suitable location show little understanding of off-road motorcycling activities and the facility requirements to attract repeat visits, and fail to factor in that these areas are privately-owned and thus not available for this use. The Mooloolah Logging Area site was selected following an assessment of available land on the Sunshine Coast and because of its proximity to Steve Irwin Way. Further, the site’s terrain and topography offer opportunities for a variety of tracks to cater to different skill levels and different off-road motorcycling activities, such as motocross, moto-trials and enduro riding. No works have commenced at the site other than to undertake surveys and track maintenance. Claims that the Queensland Government is destroying 300-year-old trees are simply not true. Claims that many national parks will no longer be national parks under new criteria are also untrue. Recent changes to the Nature Conservation Act were simply to streamline and simplify management of Queensland’s protected areas. National parks will continue to be protected. Our department has reduced the number of classifications – not the number of national parks, e.g., ‘national park–scientific’ and ‘national park–recovery’ are now simply ‘national park’. See the website for details http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/about/legislation/ changes-prot-area-tenure-structure.html. The Queensland Government is strongly committed to protecting, preserving and managing our protected areas, and I assure readers that this facility will be built with due consideration to any environmental impacts. Dr John Glaister Director-General, Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing
Makeover adds value
In contrast to Carmel (GCNews July 23), I am delighted at Beerwah’s makeover and especially the whimsical, playful steam-punk sculptures by renowned artist Russell Anderson. I believe they add value to our town and have already become a great talking point. Children, especially, seem captivated by them. Public art is never universally loved, or hated. In response to the complaints about ‘Skywhale’ – Patricia Piccinini’s controversial sculpture in Canberra – Robyn Archer wrote that it evokes ‘powers of imagination that allows wonder and curiosity into our lives’. And so does Russell Anderson’s work. However, there is one thing missing from our new streetscape: bike racks for cyclists. I would have thought these would have been essential with the new bike paths built to encourage more people to cycle more often, and also because many road cyclists use Beerwah as a rest point on their rides. Some like the ones recently installed outside Buck’s Bakery at Landsborough would be ideal. Or maybe something quirky to blend in with the sculptures! Dr Mary Garden Beerwah
Stationery for deserving students
Some months ago, I shared a story in GCNews relating to a school in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji. I asked for help for the children of that boarding school including items like pens, pencils, rulers and whatnot. My friend and I purchased $300.00 worth of goods with the intention of sending same to the school. At the time, I was dealing with a female teacher from the school by email. As a result of the story in the paper, quite a number of interested locals donated a substantial amount of goods for the school. Unfortunately the teacher I was dealing with stopped emailing me. I then had Captain Cook Cruises trying to have the principal or headmaster contact me and after a further five months, (seven months in total) I gave up. I then saw and spoke to Lea Parkes, our local editor and informed her of the situation and that I would never fall for it again. My intentions were honourable and sincere. Over the last weekend I was informed that the local State school of Oakey on the Darling Downs was experiencing some problems, and also some of their smaller schools in the immediate area, due to economical conditions and such. I then contacted the school principal Mr Scott Pacey, at Oakey and he thought I was Santa Claus arriving early. My wife and I drove up to Oakey today and left three large shopping trolley's full of goodies along with some very full boxes and bags. I can tell you

those items will go to schools and children in that area who will treasure and use them. I am sorry the goods did not end up where they were intended to go, however, due to the circumstances and the look on that school principal's face, they could not have gone anywhere better. Congratulations ‘Handful’
I was very pleased to see the story in GCNews of Brett W ‘Handful’ Smith winning his second World Championship belt over the weekend. To have such an accomplished athlete in our region is fantastic, and deserves to be celebrated. I congratulate Brett on his 19 - 2 professional record, and wish him all the best in retirement. Tim O'Shea Beerburrum Editor’s note – most readers would know Tim as our local ‘Strongman’ so he knows plenty about the dedication involved in being the best in your chosen sport!
Hear, hear
I agree with Richard Plantinga’s letter published last week in GCNews. I am always amazed when so much money is wasted in trying to forecast what will happen 10, 20, or 30 years from now. Perhaps they have a crystal ball, or they know something we don’t? Time and money should be spent fixing the immediate problems in the district, of which there are many. Then, I wonder about how much the household insurance for residents will be in Caloundra South and Halls Creek, when they are basically building in a catchment area for Pumicestone Passage. Then, there are the environmental aspects of these developments. If one of these developments HAS to go ahead I think it should be the Beerwah East Development. At least it would be closer to the railway line for public transport. Better still, if they ever finish the duplication of the rail line. Carole Tait Glass House Mountains

Reed Street intersection the number one priority
NDIS Forum
Recently I took Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Scott Emerson, to the Reed Street intersection at Glass House Mountains. Now that work is underway on the D’Aguilar Highway this intersection is my number one road priority in the Glass House electorate. I want to assure local residents that I will continue to champion improvements to the Glass House road network and I look forward to working with Minister Emerson to see results at this intersection.
On July 21, I hosted a forum on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Caloundra in my role as Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on NDIS. At the forum, I provided an update on my recent visit to NDIS trial sites in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania and had an open discussion on the scheme as a whole. We had a great turn out and I would like to thank everyone who attended for the constructive conversation which was of great benefit to me and the representatives from the National Disability Insurance Agency. If you have an interest in NDIS you can keep upto-date by visiting www.malbrough.com.au
MRI funding to benefit the coast
Great news for the Sunshine Coast! Two MRI machines have been granted partial Medicare eligibility. The Specialist Women’s Imaging Centre at Currimundi and Sunshine Coast Radiology at the new Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital have both received the approval which means that patients in the region will have better access to scans, resulting in faster diagnosis of medical conditions and more timely choices of treatment.

Peachester Dam site ruled out Recently the Minister for Energy and Water, Mark McArdle MP, announced that the Government wanted to have a discussion about practical, sensible and affordable ways to protect more people from future floods. Some investigation began into potential dam sites across Queensland. One of these sites was in the vicinity of Peachester, a site which had previously been identified for flood mitigation back in 1991. I can advise the Peachester community that the Minister has now considered this site and ruled it out as a possible site.
Halls Creek and Beerwah East Info Booths
We are continuing our community consultation process regarding both the Halls Creek and Beerwah East developments and whether one, both or none should be included in the South East Queensland Regional Plan for future growth consideration. The first of our information booths will start at Beerwah Library on August 14 from 10.00am – 12.00noon. The booth will be set up in the main foyer of the library, with maps of both sites, a FAQ sheet and survey form for people to take home. The booths will also run August 21, September 4, 11, 18 and 25 at Beerwah Library from 10.00am – 12.00noon. I encourage you to have your say and to also consider the voice of our future generations.
Calling all Year 6 students
I am running a competition where local Year 6 students in the Caloundra Electorate have the chance to win an iPad mini. All students have to do is fill out an entry form (copies have been sent to all local schools or feel free to contact my office for one) along with an A4 drawing to the following theme: ‘In 20 years I would like Caloundra to look like…’ I think it’s important for our leaders of tomorrow to think about the future of Caloundra now. Entries close on September 10, and the winner will be announced, September 19. Good luck!
Qld Anzac Centenary Grants Program
One of the most significant events of our time, commemorating the Anzac Centenary, is currently upon us and a series of events held locally, nationally and internationally will be held between 2014 - 2018 to mark 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War. The State Government is offering grants of up to $80,000 to help local communities commemorate this historic occasion in their own way. Have you thought about how your community would like to contribute? Funding can go towards events with local relevance, such as exhibitions, research, community education activities, and the restoration or enhancement of memorials and honour boards. Round two is currently open and I encourage your group to apply before the closing date of August 12. Visit www.qld.gov.au/anzac100

Energetic imbalances / blockages may be located that are preventing the body’s own innate ability to heal. These are energetically cleared using gentle correction techniques, thereby facilitating the body’s own healing abilities.

Things 2 Do Roller derby car wash
It’s not often you can get your car washed and be entertained at the same time. However if you head along to the paddock on Connection Road, at Mooloolah (opposite the stockfeed shop) between 9.00am – 2.00pm this Saturday that is exactly what you can expect. As this is a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Area Rollers (SCAR) a co-ed junior and adult roller derby club, you can also see some pretty awesome roller derby skills on display. So along with a sausage sizzle, cold drinks and face-painting, some of the roller derby girls and guys will be skating around the streets demonstrating what a cool sport it is. To find out more about their club you can check out their Facebook page or the website at www.scar.org.au

Billy Goes to War
Maleny Players are staging a newly-written production to commemorate the outbreak of World War 1, a 100 years ago this August. Entitled ‘Billy Goes to War’, it follows the story of Digger Billy Smith, his comrades and his family throughout the four years of the War from 1914 to eventual peace in 1918. To localise the story they have used authentic letters from ‘the Front’ donated by local people including one from Beth Whan, of Maleny, who gave them a copy of a letter written by her father Oswald after the Gallipoli landings, in which he was wounded. Performances are 100 years to the date of the start of the War, Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3 and then the following weekend, August 9 and 10 at the Maleny Community Centre. This presentation covers: age-related road safety issues, an overview of the road rules, helpful driving tips, physical fitness, and medical requirements to drive. Property of the week
Price smashed by $100,000
This parklike 5.8 acre block is zoned Rural Residential offering subdivision potential. Town water, plus a spring fed dam and seasonal creek means the property would suit a nursery or hobby farm. The gently sloping land provides well drained paddocks for livestock and the serious shedding can house any amount of vehicles and equipment. The cosy country cottage has a new kitchen and wrap around verandahs, and would be very easy to add on to if you did not wish to build a new home on any of the available home sites. All this within walking distance to the historic Landsborough township, school, shops and electric rail. With this property you can ‘Go Country’ and still be in town. Vendor has reduced the price to $549,000, to meet
the market meaning swift action will be required to acquire this versatile property. Call Roger Guillemet on 0418 485 954 or 5439 6300.

COLOUR YOUR LIFESTYLE

6
Offers Over $650,000
This new home represents a blank canvass for you to add the colours of your lifestyle. Located at the end of a no through road with bushland on the boundary, the 2163m2 lot (1/2 acre) is level and well drained. With 300m2 under roof there is space for all and the 12m x 7m plus carport colourbond shed will house the toys. The creators of this impressive home have put a lot of thought into the finer details from the Butlers Kitchen, to the ducted air con, vacuum maid system, and double glazed windows with crim safe screens. The designer kitchen boasts a self cleaning oven, soft closing drawers, lockable hot plate, glass splashback, granite benchtops and plumbed in fridge. The light from the chandelier reflects beautifully off the marble floor tiles in the formal dining room. The family room is vast and the media room carpeted for acoustic quality. All 4 bedrooms are oversized, the ensuite shower could fit the whole family and the walk in robe is on the same scale. This steel framed home has solar hot water, is on town water plus there is a 22,000 litre underground water tank. They have thought of it all. So why not start colouring your lifestyle. For your private inspection, call today.

Do you ever have mornings that immediately look like a scene where you are conducting traffic on a busy intersection in Bangkok? Kid’s have to get fed, shoes on, hair done, teeth cleaned, in the car, lunch box in the bag, homework book in the bag etc, etc. This morning was like that at our house, only it all had to happen earlier because my daughter had clarinet class at 7.30am at the school! As I share with families around our community, it is a common theme that parents feel like they are balancing spinning china plates on sticks constantly, and it can easily lead to unhealthy stress and anxiety. We all have times where we need time out, but there are some timeout activities that are more helpful than others. If TV has become the escape regularly for you, perhaps you’ve already realised that this escape is short lived and all the dramas are still there waiting for you when the movie ends. There is a more wholesome way of being encouraged, and it involves finding a mentor, someone you trust and look up to, even a group of people in the same situation as you.

JULY 30 2014
Our lifestyles do not allow for community gatherings very often, but we need others around us to share in life, grow in faith, and be encouraged that things will get better. Jesus knows life is tough. In fact He said, ‘In this life you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world!’ (Jn 16:33) The scriptures also point out how necessary it is to meet regularly with people who build you up. The letter to the Hebrews says, ‘And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.’ (Heb 10:24-25) Why not check out a Church today. (See the details in the ad section toward the back). Bless you. See you on the weekend! Brendan 0417 757 397.

Super Strawberry 2014 Round 4
Perhaps the strawberry crop is late this year. Or are the individual fruit smaller than usual? The entries in this year’s Super Strawberry competition are certainly fewer in number, and the weights are not up to past records. However the competition is proceeding, and thanks to Oaklands Farms who are participating so enthusiastically – they have won again in Round 4, with an entry weighing 115 grams. So at this stage all rounds in the 2014 competition have been won by Oaklands! Round 5 will close at 4.00pm next Friday, August 1. Entries can be presented during the week at Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative for weighing and recording. Please ask for Helen. Thanks to the Co-op and Beerwah Hotel for their support again this year. The Charity Sports & Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday, August 23, at the Beerwah Sports Ground. All proceeds to Cancer Council Queensland as in previous years. 50 |

Gymkhana sees pink
The Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony club had a very successful event on Sunday, July 20 with their Pink and Purple Gymkhana, with 143 riders attending. The day was organised as a fun day for pony club and non pony club riders and everyone got into the spirit of the day. It was wonderful to see how much effort people put into the costumes. We raised $500.00 from our raffles which will be donated to breast cancer research. We would like to thank our sponsors: Sandale Saddlery, Hoop Shots, Beerwah Feed Barn, Feed and Fodder, Pro-Sky Aviation Caloundra – ‘learn to fly’, and thank you for all the donations we received on the day from friends and families. Tibros showed high energy
Contributed by Dimi Young Tibro’s netball club entered two teams to compete in the High Energy Youth Tournament held at Metro Association Wembley Park, Coorparoo from July 7 – to 11. This event is an international youth sports tournament. The 2014 event held Netball and Football and is introducing Rugby 7’s, AFL and Basketball in the 2015 event. For more information Email: info@ highenergyevents.com.au The U/16 Tibro Gems came Runners-up in the Cup Tier. The U/14 Tibro Pearls succeeded in narrowing the goal margins between the teams the second time round with the opposite teams played by the end of the week. Both Teams were
formed from the Gems, Pearls and Rubies, original teams played in the Junior Competition on Saturdays. These girls did extra training every week with Tania Whitiui leading up to this event. A new challenge for the girls was the introduction of the Fast 5 Netball Game. Tegan Gisler and Sarah Lillecrapp won a prize each for shooting a 5-point goal. This was a great new challenge for the girls and they enjoyed this immensely. It was a great week for the girls; they had a great time bonding and had heaps of fun. Thanks go to all the parents and coaches who drove the girls to Brisbane each day during those chilly mornings.

The golfing gods finally smiled and I was able to take out the Division 1 prize with a score of 74 Nett. Mavis Brimelow was runner up on 75 Nett. Local Junior Cricketer member of winning Queensland Team
Contributed by Jill Forster A Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club’s Junior, 12-year-old Tomas Lunt, was a member of the Queensland 12 years and under Schoolboys team who competed in the Australian Championships in Darwin from June 16 – 22. In Darwin the team played five games over seven days with two rest days. Days one and two saw big wins for Queensland over ACT and Victoria. Day four was a close game with New South Wales and saw Queensland just get home with one wicket to spare. Unfortunately, Day five was a big loss to South Australia with South Australia playing good consistent cricket. Day seven was the final day and Queensland needed a win against the Northern Territory to at least tie with Victoria for the title. Northern Territory batted first with a solid 132. Qld managed to pass this score with eight overs remaining. Tomas actually hit the winning runs with a boundary to register the win and ensuring the boys tied with Victoria on points to share the title. At the completion of the carnival, Tomas was ranked number two for the Queensland side in both batting and bowling. He also made the top 20 bowlers list coming in at 17 and entered the top 10 batsman coming in at eight for the entire event. This has no doubt been a very exciting time for Tomas being able to experience playing cricket at a much higher level and also gaining from it socially. Tomas had a great attitude and tried to learn as much from this experience. “Tomas represented his family, club and team with dignity and maturity,” said his father, Brett. Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club wishes Tomas all the best for his future cricketing endeavours. Tomas Lunt, 12 years and under Queensland Schoolboys Team

Just for Laughs Neighbourly love A bloke went to work and received a message from his neighbour. "Sorry that I have been using your wife...I have been using day and night...I use whenever you are not at home...In fact, I have been using more than you do...I confess to you about this because I feel very guilty...I hope you will accept my sincere apology!" The guy left work in a rage and rushed home to confront his wife, expecting to catch her up to no good. There was a huge argument, shouting and tears. The wife through her weeping was adamant about her

innocence. Later that day, after more arguing, throwing things and shouting and stomping around the place the unhappy couple settled down to talk about their separation, divorce, who would get the dog, how they would share the kids on weekends, and whether they would sell the house. About 3.00pm the bloke received another message from his neighbour: "Sorry for my typo earlier. I mean your wifi, not your wife." LEO July 23 – August 22 This may be a week that you drift off distractedly, as you are reliving the planet’s magical glow of Leo energy, drifting into desires that are fulfilled with love and luxury. This week is the week to regain structure and composure and walk into the week with a practical plan to follow. Leo stirs persuasive skills. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 From last week’s new Moon whatever you may have bottled up may now rise to the surface! Give yourself all the time you need to sort things out. Keep a low profile. Steer clear of those who place heavy demands upon you. On the plus side, excitement could be in store with business income success now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 A few days ago the new Moon, being in the sign of Leo, is nature’s beautiful way of reinforcing your recent love or celebrations. If you feel a little forlorn or restless, then try a new movie or music festival. This is the time that art and music may move you into the zone of more tender feelings and friendships. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 From the new Moon of last week you are still very feisty. You may find yourself emerging into a new sphere of activity with promising overtones for your reputation. Take on any suitable challenges. At the end of this month something unexpected may alter your plans. It may turn out to be unexpected fun!
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With Mars now firmly in the sign of Scorpio it brings a fiery or perhaps angry action to your fight against those in authority. With many planets joining forces in the sign of Leo it is time for you to plant the seeds for your heart’s dream. In fact, you may find the last week of the month to be revolutionary. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This last week of this month is to channel your energies into investing time, money or energy into something new. Shared interests are not perfectly aligned at this time. You will do better hanging onto your practical common sense and let that be the basis of your decision making. Focus on the big picture now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This last new Moon period is still giving you a marvellous burst of emotional outpouring of love and affection. This is the week that you may be lost in memories of past events, and being content to see how far your dream has manifested. Someone needs a confidence boost and a reminder of shared interests. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Take advantage of good fortune this week and thereby set your course to shine at work and in efforts to improve and enhance your wellbeing. It’s a week that is important for your psychological health as well as the physical side. That means the planets are making a very positive attitude around your efforts.
ARIES March 21 – April 20 You may find yourself amidst the drama of somebody else or perhaps lost in your fantasy. Ordinary practical work will be put to one side unless you are able to control a distracted mind. You will feel newly inspired about love and yet also need to break free from dependencies. Emphasis on home and family. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The true expression of love may require making some concessions. It is wise not to sacrifice everything so that you feel you have been taken advantage of. You can make up for what you lack in inspiration at the end of the month by putting in plenty of perspiration! Forget creativity, just get to work now. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Lingering financial pressures may remind you that shared arrangements may need to be revised putting more control back in your court. Do not spend your hard earned funds in a lost cause. If someone has a better plan structure than yours, take the day off and follow their new structure. Evening joy periods. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Last week’s new Moon could push you to take a chance or to live large again. There is an incentive to earn, but also one to gamble. Don’t risk everything on the gamble, calculate your risks and sense the spirit is with you. It may not be possible at this time to really know what you want but avoid any scams.
