Hi Everyone Well Sunday morning might have started out as one of the chilliest days for quite a while – however it warmed up to be a great day locally, perfect weather for the big events being held in the area. The annual Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo at Beerwah, in the Hall and Turner Park and the Bankfoot House Open Day at Glass House Mountains events coincided this year, which made it a really full day for people who went along to both. While not a meteorological term, there was a definite ‘buzz’ in the air when we arrived at each of the events. At Beerwah we were greeted with the sound of live music – local band ‘Super Dads’ were playing out on the verandah. There were plenty of families wandering around enjoying themselves with face painted little ones, a jumping castle and animal farm, and for the grown ups there
were plenty of displays and stalls to keep us entertained. We followed this up with a visit to Bankfoot House, and we arrived not long before the Governor, Ms Penny Wexley and her husband Mr Stuart McCosker were to arrive. What I didn’t realise until a couple of days before the event was that the Governor’s husband is actually a Glasshouse boy, so they felt right at home at Bankfoot House. And what was great was that the Governor even managed in her speech to politely explain to the visitors (including our new Mayor) the correct way to pronounce Coonowrin. Thanks to all those who gave their time to bring these two brilliant events together – they were great! Regards,

Bankfoot House Open Day 2012

The Governor of Queensland, visiting cyclists, descendants from the Clark sisters (first women to climb Coonowrin in 1912), State Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell, Mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council, Mark Jamieson, Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski and members of the Glasshouse community were among an estimated 900 people who attended the Bankfoot House Open Day on Sunday, May 27. Under clear blue skies, the Open Day featured 100-year-old bicycles and pennyfarthings, one ridden from Brisbane by Brett Richardson, and a beautifully restored 1903 Oldsmobile owned by John Day. Among others, the Governor was quick to accept a ride in the 109-year-old immaculately prepared horseless carriage. She regretted that good judgement and modesty prevented her from riding a Pennyfarthing.

Brett Richardson and his pennyfarthing On hand at the event was Bill Ferris, a descendant of the Bankfoot House families. Bill was acknowledged as the mechanical master who had rebuilt the 1903 Oldsmobile motor. Ron Gillinder, President of the Friends of Bankfoot House, asked Bill what his late father, Jack Ferris, would have thought of the day’s events. Bill said the day would have been far beyond his father’s expectations. Descendants of the Clark family were also present to help celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the 1912 epic bike ride from Brisbane and their climb of two of the Glasshouse Mountains. Two daughters of one of the 1912 riders, Etty Clark, made the trip to Glasshouse, whilst Judy Bligh, a grand-daughter of Etty Clark rode her bicycle from Brisbane on the day in the company of eight friends. Judy commented “if grandma could do it, I can do it!”

In last week’s GCNews, we alerted readers to the news that one of the region’s biggest farmers, Gowinta Farms, had gone into voluntary administration. Shortly after going to print, we received the following statement from Gowinta Farms director Len Smith. “Firstly we would like to let all our friends and fellow business colleagues know that we appreciate their support and understanding while we take the time to complete the task of restructuring and reforming the business.” “We are determined to work with our Financier to strive through this tough economic barrier before us and come out the other side bigger and better. We have no intentions of letting down the businesses and people that are currently affected by our plight and will focus on the positives and block out the negatives. “Even though we will suffer some more setbacks in the coming months, we will endeavour to keep the damage to a minimum. Our main asset at this present time is the dedicated staff that have not bought into the hype and negative media and remained loyal when it has been needed most.
“We have been very unfortunate that certain factors within the business and the current financial climate have not been favourable and led us to this point. The path we have taken, along with certain plans full of good intent not being able to be executed, have been large contributors to this outcome, but the main factor surrounding the action taken was the drop in the property market which has left our ability to source the funding needed to complete the expansion exhausted at this present time. “This has allowed us to reflect on our decisions past and present to help Gowinta succeed well into the future. We endeavour to remain a strong agricultural presence in the Beerwah area to help with the growth that is sorely needed for the rest of the town’s business sector. I again thank everyone who is genuine for their wishes and concerns towards the Gowinta Farms family.”

Artist revels in new found inspiration in Glasshouse Local artist Marty Walker has twice as many reasons to be proud of his new exhibition, ‘Landscapes’, which is now on show at The Tree Frog Gallery in Maleny. Not only is this Marty’s first ever solo exhibition, his is also the first solo exhibition for the new Tree Frog Gallery artist in residence, Heather Marty Walker with wife Annette and daughter Gall. Jasmine Marty, who with his wife and daughter moved to the Glasshouse Mountains last year, admits he is a late starter to painting, only getting serious about it after his wife encouraged him to pursue it around six years ago. Largely self-taught, Marty was also mentored by well known artist Margaret Hatfield while living in Canberra, and since moving to the Glasshouse Mountains, says he has found new inspiration in his surrounds. He says his art, which features mostly landscapes, is inspired by his natural surrounds; a fact that is clearly evident is one of his most recent works, ‘Crookneck’, which forms part of the exhibition currently on display at The Tree Frog Gallery. Marty’s exhibition runs until June 11. The Tree Frog Gallery, located at 926 Montville Road, Maleny, is open 10.00am - 4.00pm Thursday to Monday (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). For more images of Marty’s current exhibition, visit The Tree Frog Gallery website at www. treefroggallery.com

Opera in the Hangar to raise the roof! It’s not too often that opera and aircraft share the same stage, but at the upcoming Opera in the Hangar event, the two will come together for what promises to be a dazzling event in Hangar 100 at the Caboolture Airfield.
It will be a meeting of culture, history and aviation, say aviation buffs Kerry and Prue Mason, who are getting right behind the event, which will also feature a display of vintage aircraft. The event, which will be held on Saturday, June 9 from 5.30pm, will feature a special performance by The Underground Opera, a professional opera company that produces world class concerts in unique environments. Kerry, who has been flying all his life, said the event was being held to coincide with the anniversary of the day Kingsford Smith and Ulm landed at Eagle Farm after their historic flight across the Pacific in their three engine trimotor, The Southern Cross. Kerry and Prue own a Fairchild Argus, which will be on display on the evening, along with a Dehavilland Dragon and a Dehavilland Tiger Moth, a Chipmunk and an Auster. The fully restored Argus, built in 1943, was originally flown in the United Kingdom in WWII by female pilots, members of the Women’s Auxilliary Airforce, on liaison duties. When she’s not pursuing her passion for vintage aircraft, Prue is also a published children’s author, and will be launching her latest book, ‘Birdie in the Sky’, at the event. Tickets to Opera in the Hangar, available through Ticketmaster, are $70.00 a head, including food and drinks. For more information about the event, contact Prue on 0438 549 411, or check out the aero club’s website at www. cabaeroclub.org.au. Beware door-to-door sales people
With competition in the electricity retail market hotting up, a local Beerwah man found out that it pays to do your homework. John Weekes from Beerwah called the GCNews office with his story about a door-to-door salesman who is in the area and may be giving out misleading information. John said that the salesman quoted him a price for electricity which ‘included the carbon tax’. It seemed like a good deal, so he signed up. John then contacted the particular company to see if he could negotiate a better rate and was told that the sales representative can’t quote prices which include the carbon tax, as the tax hasn’t been introduced and the impact on electricity prices hasn’t been established. Luckily for John, he knew about the 10 day cooling off period, so he cancelled the contract without incurring any penalties. And the take-home message from John … consumers beware! Take particular care when dealing with door-to-door electricity sales reps, as they may not actually represent the company and may not be presenting you with all the right information. Check with the company first before signing up to any contract, as you may be able to get a better deal directly through them. And remember that you still have a 10 working day cooling off period, where you can cancel the contract if you have any concerns.
Sharing the joy of story time There was plenty of interest at the Beerwah Library last week when youngsters turned out to be part of the largest simultaneous ‘storytime’ event in the country. ‘The Very Cranky Bear’, written by Nick Bland kept them entertained as part of National Simultaneous Storytime, an event organised by the Australian Library and Information Association to promote the value of reading and literacy and the important role of libraries. Library staff were also keen to test out their new technology as part of the event, with an interactive iPad demonstration.

Chappy Mark describes Mooloolah State School as a great environment, and is looking forward to working there five days each fortnight and “running with the baton passed on by Chappy Dave.” The children, staff and families of the school are looking forward to making Chappy Mark feel very welcome.
Chappy Mark is married to Linda, also a school chaplain, he has three children, aged 21, 17 and nine; and a dog called Roxy who thinks she’s a person! When not at work, Chappy Mark enjoys family time, photography, table tennis, sci-fi movies, bush-walking and caramel lattes! The Chaplaincy Program assists students who need special support due to problems they are experiencing at home, at school or in the community. The program relies in part on funds raised by a dedicated Chaplaincy Committee and generous sponsorship and donations by local businesses. All together now Andy Henry, Brad Miller and Taffy Watkins from the Glasshouse Country Menshed were presented with a certificate of appreciation for their work on the fantastic wooden world puzzle they have created for the kids at our wonderful State School. After 300 hours or more of grafting, cutting, painting and preparing, it’s finally finished. The children were amazed. Thank you Bob McLean for the co-ordination of people and resources at the Menshed and beyond. Thank you also to Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains for the much needed materials. Thank you to Andy Henry for his many hours of hard work in mapping out and preparing the world map to be cut into puzzle pieces. This was huge! Also for the beautiful wooden box the puzzle now lives in.

Thank you to Taffy Watkins for cutting out the tiny intricate puzzle pieces, if you didn’t wear glasses before, you will do now. A huge Thank you to all for enriching our community and amazing the kids with what people can do, just like our puzzle it all comes together when we help each other to see the big picture.
The children from Landsborough Child Care Centre had a wonderful excursion to the Landsborough Historical Museum recently. They enjoyed exploring the museum and all of the ‘olden day’ equipment. The highlight of the day was definitely the butter making (and tasting!) Taste of the olden days
Landsborough State School took a stance to promote safe and active travel when it participated in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, May 18. Students from the school were encouraged to participate in the event by walking to school with a parent or carer. Now in its 13th year, the day aims to get primary school students to be active and healthy as well as learn to be safe around roads. Research shows that more than 60 per cent of Australian school students are being driven to school, even if their school is within walking distance. With childhood obesity on the rise, Walk Safely to School Day encourages parents to drive less and walk more. Though it might seem like a small thing, walking to and from school every day means that kids are getting a bit of exercise each day as well as quality time with their parent or carer. It also decreases dangerous vehicle congestion around schools and reduces
“Ingrown Nail Treatment Experts”
carbon emissions from idling cars. So everyone benefits; the children, parents and the environment! A large number of Landsborough State School students already regularly walk or ride to school. The school participates in National Walk Safely to School Day each year to reinforce vital road-crossing skills, safe pedestrian behaviour and to highlight the benefits of regular exercise.

Locals supporting our young people
A name you can trust – S&G Furniture
Contributed by Mike Turner (BSHS Chaplain)
Beerwah State High School students have had the opportunity to take advantage of a mentor since 2007. Twenty five local volunteers have contributed to this great program since day one. These mentors, aged between 25 - 70, come from all walks of life: business owners, retirees, an accountant, a boiler-maker, teachers, a bank manager and students. They are not there to be counsellors but are there to be a friend, a positive role model. The aim is to provide students with an extra resource to help them with school and life in general. We are very grateful for the time and energy that our mentors have given to these students over the last five years. There will be an information night coming up for those who are interested in coming on board as a mentor. Please contact Mike Turner on 5436 5333 at Beerwah State High School if you would like to find out more.
Mentors from 2011 from left Sonya (trainer), Sarah, Lila, Eunice, Simone, Peter, Tracey, Val, Ben, Daniel, Graham and Mike (Chaplain)
When you buy from a local business that’s been around as long as S&G Furniture has, you know you are getting a quality product at a great price. Five minutes with …..
Give your feet the break they deserve at Stepping Out Podiatry They say that change is as good as a holiday, and at Stepping Out Podiatry, some recent changes have certainly kept us on our toes! Our lovely podiatrist Kelli recently left to expand on her podiatry and life skills, and is now enjoying her time in Singapore where she is working in a hospital. Our ‘face of the front desk,’ Ruth, has headed south to enjoy some Carly (on right), with her husband Steven and their daughter Maggie fine cuisine and cooler weather. These changes have bought some fresh faces to join the team at Stepping Out Podiatry, including Jason Roberts from New Zealand who joins Sarah heading the Podiatry team. We are already receiving some great feedback on Jason’s service. Kerry Cunningham has joined Nicole on reception and brings with her over 20 years of reception experience in the allied health field. So rest assured, the faces may change, but the standard of service will always be high with Carly still at the helm of the business. When you next need to visit a podiatrist, whether you find it difficult to cut your own toenails, need to remove dead skin from your feet, have ongoing pain from poor alignment or an ingrown toenail that needs to be removed, be sure to visit the new team at Stepping Out Podiatry.

Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer
Olwyn Kerr from Guide Dogs Queensland, accompanied by Guide Dog-inTraining ‘Champ’, was the speaker at our meeting on Wednesday, May 16. Olwyn spoke of the challenges of supporting vision-impaired and blind people on the Sunshine Coast in the face of difficult financial times and the complete lack of government funding for their services. “Everything we do, we do free-of-charge and with each dog costing $30,000 to breed, train and place, you can imagine the amount of fund-raising that is needed,” she said. “Without the generosity of business and fabulous community groups such as the Glasshouse Country View Club, we simply could not continue.” ‘Champ’ demonstrated some Guide Dog ‘tricks’ like ‘Find a Chair’ to great applause. The next View Club outing, a visit to Kate Rose Boutique at Mapleton, will be held on Wednesday, June 6. Please meet at Beerwah Library at 9.30am and bring morning tea to share. On Wednesday, June 20 we will be holding our 9th birthday celebrations at the Glasshouse Sports Club. The theme will be ‘Feline, feminine fur and fun’ and everyone is encouraged to dress appropriately. Amongst the entertainment will be Katherine Fox, winner of the Sunshine Coast Seniors Superstar competition. This should be a great day, full of fun, prizes, raffles and a bumper trading table. Our club is a non-profit friendship club that supports the Smith Family chiefly through the Foundation’s Learning for Life program for disadvantaged students. The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. You can check out the View Club on its website http://view.org.au

You Said It
From Andrew Powell State member for Glass House. Ph: 5435 2013
Letters to the Editor
Opening of the 54th Queensland Parliament
Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words. Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. Views expressed in the 'You said it' page are those of the writer - and not this publication. Please send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au or fax to 5438 7446.
As I took my place beside my LNP colleagues, all of us chosen by the Queensland people to govern this great state, I couldn’t believe it had only been three short years since I had stood at this very same place, as a new addition to the ranks of Parliament. The LNP members did themselves and their electorate proud during the first sitting week with many of the new members using this week to deliver their maiden speeches. For me personally, this opening week reinforced the trust this state has put in me, not only to manage the environment and ensure its protection into the future, but also reaffirmed my ongoing commitment to get the best results for the Glass House electorate. Now the excitement of the first week is behind us, we look ahead to preparing policy, amending legislation and introducing initiatives that will benefit Queensland. I invite you to visit the ‘Speech’ section of my website, www.andrewpowell. com.au to see speeches that I have made in these first two sittings weeks of our new Parliament.
Talk to me – I don’t bite
Recently an anonymous note was dropped in my letterbox by someone complaining about a barking dog. The note claimed that a dog has frequently been barking at night, and disturbing the anonymous person's sleep. The anonymous writer of the note claimed that he, or she, had traced the barking dog to my house. My wife and I hear barking dogs at night too. The barking comes from different dogs and different directions. As we live in a semi-rural area, we expect to hear barking dogs. We hear many sounds at night - including lowing cattle, screeching lapwings, croaking frogs, and other animal noises. It's to be expected. I own several dogs. When my dogs are disturbed by strangers, wild dogs, horses and their riders, or other unusual sights and sounds, they will usually bark. When an anonymous person pulls up in the driveway of my house, my dogs will bark. If the anonymous note writer could contact me, I would be more than pleased to work out a solution that doesn't require an anonymous threat to report me to the council. I am sure that my dogs do bark, but they are not the only ones. And I am certain that the dog you claim to hear on so many different occasions is not always one of mine. Talk to me, I don't bite.
Lights needed at deadly intersection
John Leiseboer Peachester
When is something going to be done regarding the installation of traffic lights on the crossroads of Railway Parade, Hardwood Road and Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough? This intersection has become a serious threat to road safety, with another life being lost on Tuesday, May 15. Previously, two people I knew personally were killed there. It is a dreadful crossing. Accidents and near misses are a common occurrence and some drivers now avoid the area completely. It is a very busy junction, particularly on weekends when Maleny traffic uses Railway Parade. During peak hour, 20 or more cars can be backed up to get onto Steve Irwin Way. Because of the poor layout of the intersection, many drivers are unsure of the road rules and with high traffic density on the two lanes of Steve Irwin Way, it can be dangerous to attempt a crossing from Hardwood Road. We were promised traffic lights a few years ago, but instead, an expensive traffic island was installed and the slip road to Railway Parade (from Beerwah) was drastically shortened. In summary this intersection is ‘Very Dangerous’ and it must be modified, preferably with traffic lights, before more people are injured or killed.
Buy a cap and help support koalas
M Johnson Landsborough
It was great to read in last week’s paper that more folk are realising that our koala population is diminishing, and more folk now are helping raise funds to help those who are already helping. I read a mention about the National Geographic article by Joel Sartore depicting two local rescuers. One photo showed Ray Chambers from Sunshine Koala Rescue and a local from Beerwah, Phil Siggers, who helps the boys fund-raise. Phil will be seen at local markets over the next few weeks selling beautiful koala caps (navy and fawn colours). He would like to thank the many people from Glasshouse Country Bowls Club who have already bought caps. They sell for $10.00 and he has already sold 100 caps to help finance a new rescue vehicle. You can call Phil on 5439 0243 to order one (or more!).

Glass House Mountains resident Hella Craig of Barrs Road sent in this beautiful photo of a rainbow over the Glasshouse Mountains, taken last week. Peachester Range Road Update My recent update from the Department of Transport and Main Roads has indicated that despite an enormous amount of wet weather, works are progressing really well on the Range Road. Locals have been incredibly patient and understanding through this long and drawn out process and I thank you! The latest update has the road being finalised late May to early June so motorists need to just be mindful of any equipment and plant that may be required to be shifted from the site. Look out for any variable message signs that will be used to indicate any changes to previous road arrangements. Some slight delays may be experienced as they complete installation of a guardrail and line marking.
From Mark McArdle State member for Caloundra. Phone: 5491 2780 Following a terrible accident on Steve Irwin Way earlier this month, I have been contacted by some residents who are very concerned about motorists’ safety at the intersection of Hardwood Road/Railway Street, Landsborough. I have written to Transport Minister Scott Emerson as a matter of urgency, outlining in detail concerns at that particular intersection. If you have concerns about this intersection feel free to contact my office, caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au Beerwah is certainly hosting its fair share of events lately. Most recently, it held the 2012 Glasshouse Country Sustainability Expo at the weekend, where there were plenty of activities for the children and a great range of stalls and demonstrations for the adults. I love seeing the community come together at local events and try to attend as many as I can. If you have an event that I can help promote, via Facebook or by putting signs up in my office window, please send my office details and an invite to PO Box 3998 Caloundra DC, Qld 4551. The next round for the Queensland Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund closes on May 31. I hope non-profit community groups out there have got their applications in, but it’s not too late to quickly put together an application. Securing grants for the ongoing vital work of community organisations is crucial. My office is also happy to provide a letter of support for groups within my electorate. If you've missed this round, the next round closes on the August 31. Visit www.olgr.qld.gov.au/grants for guidelines and eligibility requirements. My office has recently received many requests to order flags for kindergartens, schools, and non-profit organisations. Unfortunately we cannot order national flags, Federal members can, however we certainly can request to order Queensland flags. We’re more than happy to help and just ask that you put the request in writing and outline why you need a Queensland flag. With winter nearly here, unfortunately the risk of fire in the family home increases. Don’t forget to be extra careful with heaters and electric blankets. Visit www.fire.qld.gov.au for some great tips about winter fire safety. www.gcnews.com.au

Scot’s run for funds
When Sunshine Coast dad Scot Teichmann sets off on the Gold Coast Marathon at the end of next month, his mind won’t be on the long road ahead of him. Instead, he will be focusing on the goal – a fundraising goal of $5,000 which he hopes to achieve in the lead up to the event, in support of his chosen charity, the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre. Scot and his family are keen to sing the praises of the Centre, located in Nambour, which relies heavily on community support to continue the wonderful work it does in providing therapy services to children with moderate to severe physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities. He and his wife Yvette know only too well just how important the services they provide are, after their youngest daughter, Lily Rose, who is now aged two, was diagnosed with celebral palsy at six months of age.
“We were lucky we were able to get on to Lily Rose’s condition early, and the results that she has achieved thanks to the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre have been amazing,” said Scot. “We really want to help raise awareness of the work they do because we’re just so grateful of what they’ve been able to do for our family,” he said. “We’ve seen first-hand the great work that is going on at the centre, and my goal is to help raise funds and awareness so that other local families can also benefit.” Scot is well on his way to his fundraising goal, but you can help him out by donating via his Everyday Hero page at www.everydayhero.com. au/scot_teichmann. Making things right
I want to write to you about something that is universal to everyone… conflict. There is not one person who lives, has ever lived or will live, who can escape the unpleasantness of human conflict. To coin the phrase: it is as unavoidable as death and taxes. So, if we can’t avoid it then what can we do about it? I heard a statistic a few years ago which was quite interesting – it said ‘25 per cent of people won’t like us whether we are nice to them or not’. This statistic gives us hope that it is absolutely normal to have some people that won’t get along with us, or who we won’t get along with either. The bible doesn’t tell us we have to be friends with everyone, but it does tell us to love our neighbour as ourselves. In actual fact it goes further than that and talks a lot about making things right between us and people we have conflict with. In Matthew 5:22-24 it talks about how making things right with someone is even more important than bringing an offering to God. Being able to work through problems with people is a skill that will ultimately benefit you, your family, your job, and our community. Proverbs 15: 18 talks about how ‘a hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.’ If we truly love and respect

someone we can be patient and calm and allow the person to talk about how they have been hurt in the relationship. The saying ‘time heals all wounds’ is not really true, but it is half true. Sometimes people need time to think about what has happened, but eventually will need to deal with the hurt that is there. There will be sometimes unfortunately when it is not possible to mend a relationship. Sometimes the other party is not ready to work things out. But if we have done all that we can, to talk, apologise and listen to the other person then we have done the best we can. One of the most powerful things when it comes to hurt and conflict is when we can forgive others. Forgiveness is not letting someone off the hook. Forgiveness is letting go of the hurt that is weighing us down and putting it all in God’s hands. If you have someone today who you know is hurting because of something you have said or done, or maybe you have been hurt by something they have said or done… have a think about what you could do to make things right. God wants to help us do this. We can pray and ask him to help us, to give us wisdom and courage, to give us the words to say.

Real Estate and Financial Guide Qld property market turns around The Queensland property market has turned around and posted positive results for the first time in 18 months, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The REIQ March quarter median house price report found property prices across the majority of Queensland increasing with sales numbers also up, in some cases significantly. REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said positivity was finally returning to the market. ‘‘Three months ago when we analysed the December quarter data it seemed to indicate we had reached the bottom of the market because prices were stabilising,’’ he said. ‘‘We predicted at the time that the March quarter data would be even more positive and it certainly is that. Property prices have grown in most areas and some regions have also experienced substantial increases in sales activity, which is a hugely welcome turn around. ‘‘And while the March quarter figures contain plenty of good news, perhaps the best piece of news is some very healthy results in our tourism centres, which have struggled more than most over the past two years.’’ The top performer of all major regions across the State was Fraser Coast, which posted median house price growth of 7.8 per cent to $290,000 over the March quarter. The second best performer was Cairns, which recorded median house price growth of 4.5 per cent to $350,000. ‘‘It is wonderful that Queensland’s tourism centres are starting to experience improving market conditions,’’ REIQ chairman Pamela Bennett said. ‘‘Fraser Coast and Cairns have not had much time in the sun over recent times so to see their markets starting to turn a corner are surely a sign of more positive results in the months ahead.’’ The Sunshine Coast also experienced a significant increase in sales activity -- up 24 per cent compared to the December quarter. Queensland’s resource centres continue to experience strong demand from buyers however
property price growth in Gladstone appears to have plateaued this quarter -- albeit after posting median house price increase of 16.5 per cent over the year ending March. ‘‘Historically, it has been our resource centres that have led the charge during Queensland property cycles, closely followed by Brisbane, then our tourism centres and this pattern does seem to be repeating,’’ Mr Kardash said. ‘‘It’s still too early to tell whether this renewed confidence is here to stay, but a number of economic indicators, as well as lower interest rates, mean the future of our property market is certainly looking up.” The median house price in Brisbane increased 1.2 per cent to $505,000 over the March quarter. The Sunshine Coast’s median house price increased 0.6 per cent to $430,000 over the quarter. REIQ Sunshine Coast zone chair Lloyd Edwards said there was an increase of buyers through open homes as well as growing numbers prepared to make offers. ‘‘We are starting to see a slight tightening of stock, especially for properties priced between $400,000 and $500,000 where demand is greatest,’’ he said. ‘‘An interesting trend is a possible paradigm shift for buyers in the $1 million-plus price bracket. Whereas before many weren’t prepared to pay over the $1 million mark, many are now open to paying $1.2 million or $1.3 million if it secures the sale.’’ Mr Edwards said confidence started to improve following the State Election and was continuing to positive impact the market. ‘‘We are starting to get an inkling of multiple offers, which have been fairly absent over recent times,’’ he said. ‘‘Property prices at this stage are still solid and this is attracting educated buyers who want to get in before prices inevitably begin to increase again.’’

Are you thinking about buying a Rental Property? Buying your rental property can be an exciting time and from the day you first purchase a property for rental you will have tax deductions so all paperwork needs to be kept. One of the first pieces of information you will receive is a settlement statement from your conveyancer, this will have the purchase price of the property stamp duty and pro rata amounts for property rates and taxes. The conveyancer letter has two types of expenses, one is capital which includes the purchase price of the property, stamp duty, registration of
www.gcnews.com.au
mortgage, search and settlement fees and the conveyancer or legal fees. These are not tax deductible and form part of the capital gain calculation on the sale of the property. The second expense on the conveyancer letter is the pro rata amounts for council rates, water rates, body corporate fees and other fees or levies that your State may charge. The expenses are tax deductible and will be included on you tax return. Purchasing a rental property can mean borrowing a substantial part of the
properties value from a financial institution. Of course financial institutions charge up front application and legal fees for your loan. If these amounts are less than $500 then they can be claimed in the first year, otherwise the borrowing costs will need to be claimed over a 5 year period. Now we come to the day to day running of the property. You will receive rent from your tenants which is included as income. If you were unlucky and had a bad tenant and needed to make a claim against the bond or your insurance, the amounts
received will also be included as income. Most claims from insurance and the bond will also have a corresponding deduction for the repairs. General rule of thumb with any tax deduction is that it must be relevant to an income producing activity. Common expenses which can be Carolyn Wheeler claimed are repairs and Woodford Office maintenance, rates, 1/116 Archer Street advertising, cleaning and many other expenses incurred Phone: 5496 1156 in receiving the rental income. email: We can advise you on any cwheeler@caliph.net.au further deductions or information you may require, so happy house hunting.

is that inside the walls of your concrete water tank there is steel reinforcing, and the only way steel can expand when encased in concrete is to make cracks. What sets your business apart from others that may offer a similar service? It’s now quite common to inspect water tanks when buying and selling property. A small problem fixed in the early stages is a lot better than waiting for it to turn into an expensive repair. I can also repair concrete metal tanks cheaper than you can buy another one. Contact Ian of Complete Tank Maintenance on 0403 187 517 or 3204 4910 for tank cleaning, tank repairs, tin and concreting and leaf guard protection, plus heaps more.

What type of service do you offer? I am a former water tank builder and business owner of Complete Tank Maintenance, offering every aspect of tank maintenance and water tank cleaning. Because I have built water tanks I know what to look for when cleaning your water tank, and I can provide a free expert inspection of your tank. Why should readers give you a call? It amazes me the amount of tanks I see that have problems and are deteriorating. Your water tank is an investment. Have you priced one to see how much they are worth now? I see a lot of tanks with cracks and white calcium marks, and people don’t realise how damaging they are to your water tank. They think the cracks are not leaking much water but what they don’t realise

Tohm's A-Z of Gardening H is for Haworthia There’s always a plant or two that conjure up memories of your childhood home. Maybe it was a flowering or scented plant outside your bedroom window or if your family moved around a bit, it may have been a potted plant which provided a horticultural link between houses. For me, there are two plants which strangely remind me of my bayside Melbourne home. The Tree Dahlia is not such a great memory, but it is a good family joke. I tried to impress my father with my plant knowledge by trimming back all the new shoots in spring as he had done at the end of winter. The poor plant never recovered. The other plant which always brings up better memories of my childhood is Haworthia. In a garden generally devoid of cacti and succulents, there was one sandy area which always had clusters of a couple of species of this tough little plant. Originating from Southern Africa, most Haworthia form small clumping rosettes ranging from 3cm to about 30 cm wide and generally not much higher. They love well drained soil with plenty of water during the summer but prefer to be dry during the winter. Here in South East Queensland, as in Melbourne, my plants never get more water than falls out of the sky (true, a lot falls out of the sky here). Compared to many succulents, they can handle cool conditions and some shade. My dad had some growing against the south wall of his house. Afternoon summer sun will give the leaves a bronze, almost sunburnt colour and they will die off prematurely. There are roughly 60 species of Haworthia. They all flower in summer with small white or yellow flowers on a slender stems. Some have firm, leathery leaves and others are fleshy and translucent, a bit like Aloe plants and most have spotted or striped variegations.
Contributed by Tohm Hajncl, Amber Leaf Landscaping
Haworthia can be propagated by seed, though pups or offsets, easily removed from the parent plant are by far the easiest way to promote a species. They love to fill up a pot, lasting for years in the same pot if the conditions are right. Terracotta is great as it dries out well or deep plastic pots with a high percentage of river sand in the potting mix will allow for ideal drainage. A few offsets from my Melbourne home are flourishing in pots up here, better than some of the other plants I thought I could bring up 13 years ago. On the positive side, many years later I tracked down another Tree Dahlia for my father, which he still has growing in the garden.
Sports Results Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club’s 85 year celebration and player reunion Contributed by Jenny Morris
Our function held on Sunday, May 20 was a great success. We had 65 people turn up to celebrate the club’s milestone. The guest speaker was Fay Colthorpe (nee Muller) who launched a book on the history of the tennis club. Fay played in the Mooloolah district in the 1940’s and entered into the tournaments held by the then Palmwoods and District Tennis Association. In 1946 she won the B Grade ladies singles at the age of 13 and in the following year won the Open ladies singles. Fay won many titles in Australia and in Europe and ended up playing at Wimbledon from 1953 to 1956. With her partner, Daphne Seeney they came runner-up in the Ladies Doubles in 1956. There were more interesting stories that she told us but one that comes to mind was that they had to go to Wimbledon by ship and it took six weeks. That would be unheard of in these days. I wish to thank my hardworking committee for making this a well organised day. Also thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council for the Heritage Grant we received to prepare and publish the book. Books and stubby coolers are available for purchase at $5.00 each. If anyone would like any, please contact Jenny 5496 9292.
What’s on for gardeners in June
This plant keeps growing in my garden. I pull it out but it comes back. What can I do? Glen, Glass House Mountains It’s a native plant called Commelina (or native Wandering Jew). Common garden herbicides aren’t really effective, so you’ll need to remove it manually. You need to get all the plant out as it will regrow from pieces and from the thickish white roots. Or you could just let it grow as a ground cover – it has a nice small blue flower and is a safe haven for frogs.

It was a bit chilly but 63 girls came out to play a Single Stroke for trophies kindly donated by Keithia Thompson and Meryl Pierce. There were some great scores recorded with the best coming from Kathy Stern with a wonderful 66 Nett, to win the 2nd Division. Ruth Parish was Runner up with a 68 Nett, which would be a winning score on most other days. Another great score in Division 1 with Sonia Kenway coming in with a 69 Nett, followed by Lyn Lambert with a 73 Nett. NTPs were Barb Whitfield on 2, Sue Greentree on 5, and Sonia took out both 16 and 18. The ball rundown went to 77. I jumped the gun a little last week with the Men's Championships. They are now half way through with the final two rounds to be played this weekend. I will bring you the results next week. Until then stay safe and good golfing.
Wednesday, May 23 - Ladies Bowls Day. The semi finals of the Ladies B Grade Singles Club Championships were held. Di Garland def Leisa Craven 25 to 22, Kate White def Rae Farrell 25 to 17. Two social games were also played. John McSwain, Maurie Dawes def Trevor Bertram, Dennis Hume 23 to 18. Jan Lawson, Dave Shannon (visitor from down south) def Di Hunt, Dalija Wells 18 to 14. Thursday, May 24 - Open Pairs Bowls. AM game winners were Bobby Moss, Brian Larkin 2 + 46. Runners-up were Mike Moore and Ken Duff on a count back of the last 7 ends. PM game winners were Rob Scullion and Brian Fogarty 2 + 42. Runners-up were Kerry Capern, Phil Siggers + 22. Saturday, May 26 - Final of the Men’s A Grade Club Singles Championships. The A Grade Club Singles Champion for 2012 is Graham Richardson on 25 points, with runner up Gary Lehmann on 15 points. The game was much closer than the scores indicate. Great to watch. Adding lustre to the name and reputation of Glasshouse Country Bowls Club were three members picked to play in the Caboolture District teams in the 2012 State Men and Women District Side Championship, held on the Gold Coast during May 9 - 12. They were Terry Little, Monika Duff and Di Hunt. Playing in teams of Fours. The Championship includes 20 Bowls Districts from all over Queensland. The Ladies Caboolture team lost by one point from winning the 4th Division Flag. Terry Little played lead in his team which performed the best of the Caboolture Men’s Teams, winning eight of their nine preliminary games. Their highlight was being able to beat the highly rated Gold Coast District team which had remained unbeaten. In the final wash-up of placings, Caboolture District tied with Gateway District in Division 2 but was beaten into 2nd place on a count back.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Communication can come much easier now; especially with those you work with. You will be able to work with groups in a much easier way. This is an excellent time for initiating new ideas. Problems regarding a car could upset your plans this week. Try to keep your cool and keep centred. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Taking a holiday or simply relaxing at home can be beneficial for your well-being. Someone at this time may enter your life and challenge your views, making you justify them. It can be helpful to put your thoughts and ideas out to others. This is a time of new awakenings. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Money can come in unexpectedly. Property may be purchased and an overseas trip could be planned for the near future. A legal matter may need attending to. High spirits can bring sudden inspiration and new insights. You have the ability to do many things. A promotion or new job is possible now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 A difference with a friend could arise over a money matter. If this is so, try not to mix business with pleasure. Short distant travel will be enjoyable. Lots of social life now. Restrictions around a financial matter can be quite annoying but keep your cool as everything will turn out in your favour. Change in the home possible now.

The trooper trying to contain a chuckle, explains to her that 24 was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error. "But before you go, ma'am, I have to ask, is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken." "Oh, they'll be all right in a minute, officer. We just got off Route 128." Sitting on the side of the road waiting to catch speeding drivers, a Massachusetts state trooper sees a car puttering along at 24 mph. He thinks to himself, "this driver is as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five elderly ladies - two in the front seat and three in the back, wide-eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him, "Officer, I don't understand. I was going the exact speed limit. What seems to be the problem?"
