Hi Everyone... Well, the cover this week is not too subtle with regard to what the biggest thing that is happening locally is – and I guess the fact that we also have a public holiday on Friday for the Maleny Show is also a pretty big hint. The countdown is definitely on depending which day you read your weekly copy of GC&M News… is it now only a couple more sleeps until it’s showtime?! This year for the first time GC&M News have worked with the Show Society to bring you a standalone comprehensive Entertainment Guide as seen in the front cover photo, so don’t forget to keep it and pop it into your bag when you head along to the show. I have just checked the long range weather forecasts and the first one I have come across says “Plenty of Sunshine” and 20 degree maximum temperatures, so fingers crossed they have got it right. See you at the show – I will be the one lugging around a camera and a note book. If you see us make sure you give us a smile, as we will be taking plenty of fun snaps. Regards,

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Local News Beerburrum the place to be Beerburrum is set to become the gateway to the Glass House Mountains trail network. At a community meeting in Beerburrum last Thursday, Sunshine Coast Council launched a project to develop part of what is known as the Parrot Park Environmental Reserve in Beerburrum, creating what they are terming a “trailhead facility”. The project, a cooperative between council and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, will see the development of a new park for locals and visitors to use when setting off on trail walks into the surrounding National Parks and reserves network. The meeting heard council and QPWS staff, as well as Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, talk about what the ideas are and listen to feedback from the 50 people in attendance. “This is the first step in repositioning Beerburrum,” said Cr Baberowski. “The seed of the idea was borne from the meetings I held with the Beerburrum community over the previous few years, where locals expressed their concerns with the future of Beerburrum.” Parking will be provided for the existing and future visitation by cars, but it is the proximity to the train station which Cr Baberowski sees as a big advantage. “People will be able to come to Beerburrum on the train, make their way up through the town to the park, and set off on walks across the landscape from the new park,” he said.

For Professional Caring Service Cr Rick Baberowski, Council project officer Kurt Martin and QPWS Senor Ranger Nat Smith explain the project “Beerburrum will be the first jump off point for those tourists travelling without cars. How exciting is that opportunity for the businesses in the town? “We will also make sure that the project will honour the natural and the social history of the area, as we know how important these aspects are to the Beerburrum community identity.” If the positivity of those attending the meeting is anything to go by, the project has started off on the right foot. One local said that it was great to see that Beerburrum is being recognised as an important part of the Glass House Mountains, and that the fact that council is showing their support for the future of the town is something that Beerburrum locals should be proud of. Council is now calling for community feedback which will then inform a final concept landscape plan to be released to the community in July. Submissions close on Sunday June 24. The Show Society has been hard at work pulling together a jam-packed program for this weekend’s Maleny Show. As well as all the family friendly favourites, this year will see a host of new and exciting entertainers, performances and activities. Tapping into the growing appreciation for locally produced food and promoting the benefits of eating ‘paddock to plate’, this year will see the launch of a great new initiative – ‘Flavours of the Farm’. Billed as a “discovery of local food and producers”, this locally-driven initiative seeks to showcase the incredible produce and innovative agribusiness of the region. This new area will be located on the entertainment oval near the Small Farmers Tent and will feature a number of dedicated market-style stalls. The idea is to encourage people to purchase great tasting “real food” direct from the local families that produce it and it will no doubt prove to be an exciting new drawcard as more people look to better and more sustainable food choices in their lives. We’ve all heard of thoroughbred horses, however in a novel twist for this year, the Maleny Show will feature the inaugural ‘Noah’s Thoroughbred Pig Races’. The races have proven to be a massive hit at other locations around the state and, with four races daily from 11am, there is no need to miss out. The brand new ‘Walter Whip and the Flames Show’, another exciting addition to this year’s program, will feature numerous whip cracking performances on both days.

Walter Whip and the Flames Show During the day Walter will showcase his considerable whip cracking skills with kids invited to have go. In the evenings, the demonstrations will provide a “hot new experience” as Walter adds the thrill of flames to his whip wielding performance. Luke’s Reptile Kingdom will also be appearing for the first time at the show this year. Located between the Small Farmers Tent and the Flavours of the Farm area near the entertainment oval, the show will let audience members get up close and personal with reptiles – with a number of shows scheduled each day. The 2018 Maleny Show is on this Friday and Saturday, June 1 and 2. Gates open from 8am until late. For more details visit www.malenyshowsociety. org.au or check out the lift out entertainment guide in this issue of GC&M News.

NBN towers step closer… but faster speeds dumped

By Greg Brown A verdict on the six local NBN fixed wireless broadband internet tower proposals may be approaching, with an agreed decision extension period expiring on May 31. NBN lodged the six tower development applications for Peachester, Balmoral Ridge, Conondale, Maleny, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum with the Sunshine Coast Council in July last year. Council and NBN agreed to extend the decision-making period until May 31. It is unclear how long it will take for council to make their decision public. GC&M News will keep you updated when the decision is made. On a related matter, NBN boss Bill Morrow has told a Senate Estimates Committee that they have dumped plans to upgrade the fixed wireless service to provide the same speeds as can be gained by those on fibre services. When asked about their previously announced plans for fixed wireless customers to gain 100 megabits per second (mbps) services, Mr Morrow replied, “We killed it.” In defending NBN’s decision, Mr Morrow said that there's not massmarket demand for 100 mbps services. "There is no economic model that would work… it's hard to find applications that warrant the need for 100 mbps,” he told the Committee. This is in contrast to statements NBN made in January where they said that half of the eventual 600,000 fixed wireless users would have access to the faster services. The decision effectively will create two ‘classes’ of internet user through the hinterland… those with fibre services who at least have the option to be able to access faster internet speeds if required; and those on fixed wireless who will be forever considered a second-class user. See our letters page for more details.

People power says no fuel opposite the school The relaunched plans to build a petrol station and two food outlets directly opposite the Maleny State Primary School have fired up community opposition, with the ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School EVER’ group rallying last Wednesday. Outside the school, group spokesperson Angie Kelly presented Division 1 Councillor Jenny McKay with an armful of over 610 protest letters, all addressed to Mark Bailey, Minister for Transport and Main Roads. These letters are destined for the office of Minister Bailey, all pleading with the Labor government to use their powers to intervene and prevent what they see as a disastrous development on Burgess Street, Maleny, with fears that the increased traffic will risk the safety of the school children. The group is also outraged that the development is “code assessable” under the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, which limits what Sunshine Coast Council is capable of doing to stop or even influence the approvals process. It also means the community has no rights to make formal submissions into the process. Cr McKay acknowledged the significant community concerns, saying that Maleny parents, students and residents came out to add their voices to the protest against building a service station across the road from the primary school. “People have told me that they feel it’s totally unacceptable to put more traffic on this main road, which is already so busy around the school zone,” said Cr McKay.

Cr Jenny McKay receives protest letters from Angie Kelly with protestors watching on “I wrote to Minister Mark Bailey two months ago asking that he put a stop to the application, I hope to hear back from him soon. “The strongest plea is to the Minister. As a concurrent agency, if the Minister says ‘no’ to more traffic entering and exiting the road directly opposite this school, then the application is automatically refused by council. “Let’s hope the Minister will listen to the community, read the over 600 letters of protest and will take our plea seriously.” The No Fuel Opposite Our School EVER group has commenced an online petition, which they are asking every concerned person to sign. The link to the petition can be found on their Facebook page, ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School EVER’.

Glass House shopping centre plans revived DENTURE CLINIC

Although the Luke family have sold the Glass House IGA, their plans remain on track for a new shopping centre to be built on lands adjoining Bruce Parade and Ryan Street (the lane adjacent to the Neighbourhood Centre) in Glass House Mountains. The development application for a shopping centre complex, including a supermarket and possibly ten specialty stores, was approved in 2012. However, due to a range of reasons including the global financial crisis and negotiations with the Department of Transport and Main Roads relating to land resumptions as part of a future widening of Steve Irwin Way, the Lukes requested and

received an extension on the timeframe given until they had to commence construction. That deadline of May 20 has arrived, and they have recently lodged another application with Sunshine Coast Council to extend that timeframe by a year to May 20, 2019. In a supporting cover letter to the application, the town planning consultants explained that the compensation negotiations between TMR and the Lukes for the loss of the land to a future wider Steve Irwin way easement have come to a successful conclusion. They stated that the Lukes are looking to start the construction works as soon as possible.

Innessa Hook

By Sonia Clark Peachester songstress Innessa Hook recently premiered the music video of her evocative new single ‘Golden Wreath’ with an intimate showcase event at Vianta café, Beerwah. The release marks the culmination of an artistic journey that has seen Innessa experiment and evolve with a number of creative projects and musical genres over the last few years. ‘Golden Wreath’ heralds the arrival of her present sound which weaves her alternative inclination with traditional Russian folk music inspiration. Innessa grew up in Kirov, north east of Moscow, and met her Australian husband travelling through Spain. Wanting to be nearer to their Australian family, the couple moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2010, eventually purchasing property in Peachester two years ago. The couple and their two young daughters have embraced the beauty and community spirit of the area and Innessa has found her new home creatively inspiring. A musician all her life, Innessa says she starting singing in first grade followed by an interest in guitar, before moving on to writing her own music and songs in high school. She went on to join a rock band and travelled the world as a musician before meeting her husband and relocating to Australia. She recorded her first self-titled album at a studio in Beerwah in 2011 followed by a second album of traditional Russian and Ukrainian folk songs in 2015 which, along with her performances, garnered increasingly positive responses. “I found that that Australian audiences were incredibly responsive to this type of music – I

think they found it a bit exotic and so for two years I continued to explore this musical style until I eventually become bored musically and found myself wanting to extend myself creatively again,” says Innessa. Realising her passion for an “ethnic fusion” sound which combined her original interest in alternative folk music with the rhythms of traditional Russian music, Innessa focussed her energy into creating eclectic songs and performances that fuse alternative folk with Eastern European influences while also creating a bridge between traditional cultures and her new adopted Australian life. At her video single launch on May 19, Innessa took her audience on a musical journey starting with acapella versions of Russian folk songs. She then shared the rich stories behind the lyrics and discussed her inspiration for the video. Accompanied by fellow musician Veniamin Drozdovkii, she performed songs from previous projects/albums as well as showcasing new songs which will be released on her new album, also titled ‘Golden Wreath’. Innessa says she hopes that audiences feel inspired to learn new things about her culture and widen their experiences. “By telling little stories about the songs I am singing and the customs behind them I hope I can share some of my culture. It is a lovely way to connect with others,” she says. The video for ‘Golden Wreath’ is beautifully shot around the Glass House Mountains area and effectively melds Innessa’s Russian heritage with

her new westernised cultural home here in the Hinterland. In the video, the traditional Russian custom of releasing a golden wreath into water to realise future love has been reimagined by Innessa to symbolically inspire people to follow their dreams. “I want people to be brave and to not be afraid to follow their dreams. In the video I climb a mountain and this holds symbolic meaning for me as it visually represents my own journey to overcoming obstacles – the challenges of coming to a new country, being a mother and retaining your creativity – to show that you just have to keep going and do what makes you happy,” she says. The Queensland Music Awards finalist has definitely found her musical niche which resonates creatively and culturally. A planned visit to her native country to introduce her children to their Russian heritage will undoubtedly result in some newly inspired work. For more on Innessa, visit www.innessamusic.com.

Business News And the winner is…

Once again the Maleny Arts and Crafts Group has come out winners in the Maleny Show Window Dressing Competition, with the runner up going to Rosetta Books. This year local businesses were asked to help get the community into the spirit of the show by adopting a display theme of ‘Colours of the Show’. The theme was interpreted in a number of interesting ways, however it would seem the creative talents of Heather Anderson and Cilla Vickers set a very high benchmark for other competitors to match.

Callout to local business sponsors

Four local ladies have banded together to enter the Great Endeavour Rally and they are looking for additional business sponsorship to help them “raise dust for dollars”. Fun loving business women Amanda Smyth (Wild Horse Turf), Susan Ellwood (Grandview at Fraser), Sonia Heilig (Go Turf) and Michelle Putzolu (Drillsure Geotechnical) have entered their team ‘Kenny’s Angels’ in the rally. They have been hard at work raising their team profile and have already received some great backing from a range of businesses including 92.7 Mix FM and Turfbreed. Being local business owners, the ladies would love to have some more local businesses get onboard and have the opportunity to get noticed during the eight-day southern safari adventure that kicks off on June 15. Each year funds raised from the Great Endeavour Rally benefit individuals and regional communities allowing people with a disability have greater opportunities for independence, choice, control, and inclusion. Sponsors will have their business advertised on the ‘Kenny’s Angels’ rally car and website. Volunteers rock

Australia Zoo last week celebrated the hundreds of volunteers who take time out of their busy lives to help care for all of the beautiful animals at the zoo and its Wildlife Hospital. As part of National Volunteer Week, Australia Zoo recognised the more than 300 volunteers each year who come from Volunteer Heather with an Alpaca all walks of life – from high school through to retirement – and who share the common goal to help the zoo in its commitment to conserving and protecting all things wild. Terri Irwin, owner of Australia Zoo, praised all the volunteers who play a pivotal role within the zoo environment, providing valuable support to the keepers and guests. “All of our volunteers do their part to ensure the greatest level of care for our 1,200-plus animals that call Australia Zoo home and the more than 76,000 patients that have been treated at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital,” she said. “We are so grateful for all of our wonderful volunteers, they are part of our family here at Australia Zoo and their motivation and dedication is so inspiring.” Volunteering at Australia Zoo is a fun and exciting way to learn new skills and gain a thorough understanding of what it’s really like to be a zoo keeper, working alongside experienced zoo keepers as they care for an array of amazing animals. “We are always looking for enthusiastic, reliable and passionate people to volunteer at Australia Zoo and the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital,” Terri said. “If you enjoy working outdoors and share our unwavering passion for conservation then we’d love to hear from you!” To find out more about volunteering for Australia Zoo or Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, contact their team by emailing volunteers@australiazoo.com.au.

Units fast tracked in Beerwah

A Fast Track material change of use application was lodged with Sunshine Coast Council on May 10 to transform the vacant block at 67 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah. The 1,366sq.m block is adjacent to the old petrol station (currently occupied by Southern Cross Electrical Data), with the only structure being a large old shed. The site is zoned high density residential and the developer, MacForbes Super Pty Ltd, proposes to construct eight two-storey units. Exceptional USC graduates

The University of the Sunshine Coast is calling for nominations for its annual Outstanding Alumni of the Year Awards. USC wants to hear from employers, parents, family, friends and colleagues of USC graduates who have excelled in their pursuits since completing their degrees. Nominees can be from any field of endeavour, with previous award winners including those involved in community work, business, scientific research and international aid. Nominations will close on Monday July 2 and winners will be announced in September. The three award categories are Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, Regional Achievement (for graduates shining in the broader Sunshine Coast region or another regional community), and Rising Star (for graduates aged 35 years or younger, or who graduated in the past five years). USC Vice-Chancellor Greg Hill said the awards provided a great opportunity to pay tribute to USC graduates who have achieved at a high level in their careers or community pursuits. “I would urge members of the public to consider nominating a highachieving USC graduate, so we can honour some of the outstanding contributions being made by our alumni,” Professor Hill said. Nomination forms are available online at www.usc.edu.au/alumniawards or by contacting Anita Edmonds at alumni@usc.edu.au or 5459 4564.

By Lea Parkes For those of you who haven’t been into the Beerwah Library recently you will be find that not only has the library had a major refurbishment, the newly installed self-serve borrowing system is operational. Always slightly apprehensive about using new technology, I had the opportunity to stand back and see how it was done by Landsborough local Ché Manley (pictured below) who made the process look really simple. Another borrower explained that it isn’t that different to using the selfservice checkouts at Woolies! Outside the library the beautiful mosaicked public artwork, ‘Waterways’, has also been restored to its former glory with the garden bed being replanted. Both native and non-native plant species have been planted around the artwork to complement it. There will be a special ‘unveiling ceremony’ held during the week to officially celebrate the changes.

The Zonta Club of the Blackall Range’s major raffle prize, Howard Steer’s painting ‘Brush Strokes of the Outback’, is going to a good home in the Hinterland area. Drawn at Zonta’s recent changeover dinner, it was won by Tory Prentis and will take pride of place in Tory and husband Darren’s country home, where their children will have fun identifying the outback icons featured in the colourful painting. Peter Huth, who with his wife Alison donated the painting to Zonta for the major raffle, delivered it personally to Tory who was surprised and delighted with her win. “I am absolutely thrilled. I haven’t put it on the wall yet because I want to get exactly the right place to make the most of it,” Tory said. Zonta will use the money raised from the painting to go towards their annual Zonta scholarship given to female students at a tertiary institution, who are requiring some financial assistance to continue their studies. Starting this year Zonta will be giving two scholarships: one for a student in the STEM area and one for Humanities. Peter Huth hands over the raffle prize to Tory Prentis

The Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRWL) group invites you to experience their catchment crawl on Saturday June 9. The idea is that you are toured about – in the comfort of a bus – some places of interest within the Mooloolah River catchment, where you will learn more about that place and what is being done to help restore and protect its unique characters and virtues. On this catchment crawl, you’ll get to see the workings of the Holcim sand quarry in Glenview, the Upper Mooloolah environmental reserve high up in the very headwaters of the Mooloolah River, lunch at the Mooloolah Recreation Grounds and see the restoration works there, tour and hear about the Gubbi Gubbi Dyungungoo site, and see how the water treatment plant operates at Ewen Maddock Dam. Be aware that some sites will require walking in steep bushland areas. Cost is $10 for MRWL members, $20 for non-members. Places on the bus are limited, so you will need to book early. To book or see a detailed itinerary, go to www.mooloolahwaterwatchandlandcare.org.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association With Charne Turner The Friends of Mary Cairncross held a stall at the recent successful Maleny Wood Expo to raise awareness of the association. Many thanks go to Kerri, both Pams, Owen, Rhonda and Vince for helping out on the day. At the last meeting of the FMCA held on April 21, the latest USC honours scholarship winner, Nicole Galea, spoke to her project which is titled, ‘Foraging behavior of free-roaming domestic cats on the Sunshine Coast’. The members present were very excited about the research topic as it is very well thought out and lends itself to further research. The project deals with behaviour modification of foraging domestic cats and one of the locations for the research will be adjacent to MCSR. It is anticipated that the wildlife kill rate could be cut by up to 75%. News from Mary Cairncross Rainforest Reserve Discovery Centre includes a theme change for the centre. After the very successful ‘Birds of a Feather’ theme that had been running for several months, the new theme ‘After Dark’ was unveiled on April 30. There are many hands-on and interactive displays delving into the night time inhabitants of the forest that mostly go unnoticed. For anyone interested in becoming a member of the association, forms are now available in the centre, and more information is available online at www.friends-of-mary-cairncross. com.au. FMCA meets four times a year. The next meeting is at 10am – cuppa at 9.30am – at the Discovery Centre on Saturday July 21. Owen Harwood mans the Friends of Mary Cairncross stall at the Wood Expo

You Said It Why not re-use?

In regard to in last week’s story in GC&M News about the countdown to the single use plastic bag ban: I wonder have any of these stores considered re-using their waste material? Why not get your customers to take your waste materials away for you? Instead of paying to have cardboard boxes flattened and taken away, why not create a space for customers to take their wares (groceries) home in them? Or is that helping the environment too much? Love the Boomerang Bags concept and it is working wonderfully, for the last 12 months or more, at my local fruit and vegetable shop. Noela Beerwah

Fed up

l am a resident of nearly 30 years living along Gympie Street South in Landsborough and the volume of traffic this road receives daily is incredible. The road is not built for the amount of traffic we have to put up with nearly all day long. We live just below a rise in the road and when backing out of our drive we worry that we will be hit by a vehicle coming over the rise. We are sick of having cars and trucks sitting right up the back of us trying to push us as we are trying to take off, with sometimes horns blowing and even abuse from such inconsiderate drivers. The road limit is 60, but not many people do this, they seem to think they can do whatever speed they like. Night time and weekends this road is sometimes used as a race track by cars and bikes. l would like to see the road limit dropped to 50 and speed bumps both sides of the rise to slow the traffic down. More police presence along this road would be good as well. So when l am driving this road doing the correct speed, please do not sit right up the rear of me trying to push me into going faster as l will not, and to the person who did just this to me the other day, l will not be intimidated by people like you who then over took over on double lines at well over 60 and went past the primary school after 2pm when the limit is 40. How l was hoping for a police radar! What a shame it was not there. So people, have a thought for us, the people living along this road, a road used as a shortcut mostly, remember that we do need to be able to come and go from our driveways safely as do our visiting family and friends. Laurie Burfein Landsborough

Needs of community

Years ago I had cataract surgery on both eyes. At the time the doctor wasn’t sure whether to operate on that or the glaucoma first. He decided after medication for a few months to operate on the cataract first. Now down the track am I being classed as going blind and advised to contact Vision Australia. There are surgical procedures for glaucoma and macula. I guess that’s why that doctor who cared for me is no longer undertaking public surgery. The State Government needs to stand up for their priority – the needs of the community. Yvonne Taylor Beerwah

Re: Proposed development in Landsborough

I was fascinated to read that our councillor reserves his and our right to object to the development. This is not a matter about rights. 14

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

This is about decision making. I am interested in his and the town planners’ opinion on this development. I am interested to see whether he takes a stance and takes action to stop it from proceeding or whether he is a lame duck on this issue. I acknowledge that, according to your article, he has met with the developer and encouraged the developer to listen to peoples’ concerns. Question is, what outcomes does he hope to achieve with this? Being already invested in this project, the developer is not going to have a change of mind and show benevolence by stopping it. Moreover, our council and our councillor are not being transparent. It is evident that a development such as this is not designed for families or retirees. Mum, dad and the kids do not move into a boarding type housing arrangement. The proposed development appears to be more aligned with temporary, transitional or emergency housing. What is our councillor not telling us? There is only one clear decision for the council and our councillor to make: stop the development in its currently proposed format from going ahead. It clearly is out of character with Landsborough. In its current format it is an affront to the historic, leafy country town, and the gateway to the Hinterland that the council purports Landsborough to be. If the corner block needs to be developed go ahead, but do it sensibly. Bjorn Hoppe Landsborough

What a disgrace!

Along with other readers I voice my concern at the proposed development on the corner of 37 Maleny Street and Old Gympie Road, Landsborough (MCU18/0085). How dare the council use Landsborough as a dumping ground for low cost, high density housing that conflicts with the heritage character of our small town. How dare the council not allow public consultation and treat the town plan with disdain and manipulate it for the benefit of themselves and certain property developers. Did the council vote on this development and can we have on public record which councillors supported this? Would a similar project be approved in other areas such as Buderim, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore? Is this some sort of social justice experiment being inflicted on Landsborough? This is a totally inappropriate development in the wrong location! The added implications of such high density living in relation to car parking and traffic flows beggar belief. Added to this, the rail station parking is so inadequate for the demand that unless you arrive by 7am there are no parks, forcing commuters to park in the back streets, making access to local streets dangerous. I am not against development but this is patently wrong! Name supplied Landsborough

Not acceptable behaviour

Many Glass House Mountains locals know me as I ride my horses around the area a lot with kids that I teach to ride, and never have any trouble. I frequently share the roads with Hanson’s and Bassett Barks trucks whose drivers always slow down and, if they think it is necessary, stop for us to pass, and I could not speak more highly of them. However, I couldn’t believe the actions of the driver of the red/yellow tractor who drove towards two horses on Moffatts Road last Wednesday

SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519

causing them to spook. After looking back to see the damage he had caused, the driver continued on at speed. The driver’s actions caused the young horse (that I have been breaking in) to fall on top of the rider, dislodging her, before he then took off across the pineapple crop. Fortunately the rider was not injured and I was able to catch the horse without any harm, however I could see him running out onto Steve Irwin Way and getting hit by a truck. I hope that the tractor driver reads this letter and learns that they need to be responsible for their actions and should, in this situation, be aware that: “A person who is riding a horse or in charge of livestock that has become alarmed may direct an approaching driver, rider or pedestrian to remain stationary until the horse or livestock has become settled and it is safe for driver, rider to proceed.” Max Chapman Glass House Mountains

NBN scraps fast speeds for rural areas

The community-NBN disputes over the four local Blackall Range sites at which a total of 720 objections were lodged is coming up at Sunshine Coast Council this week, but things have taken a turn for the worse for NBN. Under the heading, “NBN Boss Dumps Top Speed of 100Mbps for Hundreds of Thousands of Fixed Wireless Customers”, the ABC News has reported that the more than 230,000 households with fixed wireless towers are now at risk of getting low rate speeds as NBN decides to toss the idea of offering 100Mps. NBN has axed providing maximum speed plans to more than 300,000 potential customers. In the story, it’s reported that there are almost 2,000 towers erected at the cost of $2 billion to date. That works out at some $1 million per tower. Add to that the costs of 20 years of maintenance and upgrades and you get close to $2 million for each tower. For that price I'm pretty sure all the rural sites could have had cable put in, which NBN has told us in public and in letters they cannot do due to cost. It may be cheaper now to put in cable in many rural areas rather than towers. The ABC also reports that "fixed wireless networks have struggled with congestion, with speeds in some areas less than what the average Turkish internet user enjoyed in 2012". We have poor quality and over-expensive wireless microwave towers which may be going to give us less speed than Turkey had five years ago. And this is what's called a national network overseen by the Turnbull government. What a poor and hopelessly useless scheme it's turning out to be. ADSL2 that many of us have got, performs better right now. Richard Giles Conondale

What is skin needling? Skin Needling is a procedure that uses multiple needles to pierce the skin to create tiny injuries deep into the skin. These dermal injuries lead to new collagen formation via the normal skin repair mechanisms. Skin needling also perforates and softens fibrous scar tissue, enabling the deposition of new collagen.

This new collagen fills depressed scars and wrinkles from the bottom layers up, lifting the depression so they level out with the surrounding skin. This process takes 2-3 months to produce visible results. How long does it take? The treatment itself only takes about 15-20 minutes but we allow 45 minutes total which includes a thorough consultation and some pampering too. 3-6 treatments can be done over a 3 to 12 week period depending on the individual. Does needling hurt? No, we use numbing cream prior to your treatment. What can needling treat? Conditions including: scarring (must be 6 months old or longer); acne scarring (post acne); wrinkles and lines; sun damaged skin; dull, sallow skin; and premature aged skin. What can I expect after my treatment? The skin can feel warm and tender once the numbing cream has worn off and non-active products must be worn for the first week (no

glycolic acids, retinols etc). Most clients will experience redness that may last for up to 24-48 hours. Mineral makeup can be applied. It is important to protect the skin with a minimum 30+ sunscreen too. Some skins will peel and be itchy, which is a normal reaction. Skin hygiene is a must whilst the skin is healing; do not touch the skin with unwashed hands, avoid dirty makeup brushes, etc.

Offering sophisticated face and body treatments catering to all needs.

WINTER IS COMING...TIME TO PEEL!!! What is a glycolic peel? A glycolic peel is the most widely used resurfacing peel agent to treat ageing, thickening, acne scarring, and stimulation of collagen and overall regeneration of new skin cells. The glycolic acid dissolves the “glue” that holds the skin cells together.

Who can have a peel? Anyone from the age of 13 and upwards is suitable.

Does it hurt? Some clients will experience a prickling / tingling of the skin and some experience nothing, it is very comfortable for most skins with no down time.

Pre and post treatment? Two weeks prior to treatment it is important to keep your face out of the sun by using a SPF 30-50 sunscreen and even more important after treatment. Sun protection is a must to protect the new fresh cells and should be part of your everyday routine.

How much does it cost and how many do I need? Everybody’s needs are different.

School News Sodturning marks milestone

Under Eights’ week celebration Beerburrum State School students were joined last week by parents, future Preps and local day care children to celebrate Under Eights’ Week. This year’s theme was “children exploring language and culture”. Groups were escorted by the school leaders through a range of activities including biscuit decorating, Indigenous dot painting, an incredible IPad app which brings drawings to life, face painting, outdoor games and an obstacle course. It was great to see students, staff and visitors smiling, laughing, learning and having fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

A sea of yellow in Beerwah

You may have noticed a sea of yellow jackets around town recently as the children of Beerwah Kindy and their families took to the streets and enjoyed a community walk. Teacher Miss Beccy said: “We recently decided to spend time exploring and engaging with our local community.

“The children visited the railway station, joined in story time at the library, picnicked in the park, and even purchased their own stamp from the local post office to send a letter home. “The children all agreed the excursion was a highlight and they look forward to future adventures out and about in their community.”

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation is a step closer to having a permanent home with the sod turning of their new facility at Palmwoods recently. Child Safety Minister Di Farmer, who attended the sod turning, said $900,000 in State Government funding had been provided to the Foundation to help them build the new facility. “The work the Daniel Morcombe Foundation does every day is amazing as they strive to keep children across Australia safe, but we know their current location at the Big Pineapple is no longer suitable for them to continue working from,” she said. As a result of the foundation’s work more than 260,000 Queensland students have learnt how stay safe, and the foundation has visited more than 1,000 schools around the country. The Morcombes first started the foundation in their kitchen on the Sunshine Coast and later moved to the Big Pineapple. The new facility is expected to be open in December.

While their African safari consultancy business has a strong international client base, Steve and Teena are now keen to offer Hinterland residents the opportunity to experience their own ‘African Safari Dream’. Teena says that they are excited to be offering locals the opportunity to join Steve on a personally guided ten day trip of Tanzania at the end of the year.

Serengeti National Park

Steve's elephant walk Being locally based at Glenview, the couple are happy to arrange a local meeting if people would like to find out more. “Tanzania really is the jewel of Africa – with such an abundance of wildlife, it is really an extraordinarily beautiful country that offers such an incredible geological diversity. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro are all household names for a good reason. Once you experience Tanzania it will forever remain in your heart,” says Teena. A ten day privately guided Tanzanian wildlife safari (twin share, land only) suitable for all ages, starts from just $6,295 with local flight packages available. If you would like to find out more of the various adventures / guided holidays including add on options to countries like Zambia (Victoria Falls) and Rwanda (Gorilla Trekking), give Teena (0457 249 998) or Steve (0467 270 619) a call, and prepare to experience an adventure of a lifetime.

From the churches SBS News recently showed a short doco on ‘Religion in Australia’. It affirmed that Christianity was the dominant religion of Australia but has been declining over several decades such that it has gone from 88.2% in 1966 to just 52.1% in 2016. The number of people reporting “no religion” has risen faster than any other category. All other religions in Australia could muster no more than 2.6%, and most of them considerably less than that, though combined they have seen an aggregate growth pattern over the last 30 years to 8.2%. More interesting was the reason for some of the decline in Christian churches. Age of congregations seems to be a determining factor. In 18-34 year olds, there is a near even split between Christians (39.4%) and no religion (38.7%). Those 65+ averaged 70.3%, with no religion at just 16.1%. Queensland reported the highest rate of Christians with 56%. What is interesting from this study of ABS figures and SBS research is that younger people have walked away from the stabilising nature of true and biblical Christianity more than any

Reverend Scott Kroeger Maleny Presbyterian Church other time in recent history. There are many reasons for this, but one long predicted was the philosophical influences that undermined what truth (by definition) actually is. When truth became a relative personal concept to be interpreted and applied to your own set of circumstances and values… then lost are any absolutes in the universe. It applies to the soft and hard sciences equally and ultimately to the recognition of the God of all Truth. Just quietly, the nature of absolute Truth never changes… regardless of what else everyone thinks. They’re just wrong. The truth of what gives meaning to all the particulars of the universe is our acknowledgement of the God who created everything, who spoke the Truth in space, time and history, and who planned a course of human redemption from the sin and chaos that we presently experience in the world today, through the sending of his son Jesus to die on a cross in our place. This makes sense. This explains what is. This reflects Truth and Life. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Health &Wellbeing Thrive 2018 – Health and Wellbeing Expo Hair Aid fundraiser A community health and wellbeing expo is being planned for Sunday October 14 at the Beerwah Community Hall, designed to showcase the amazing range of products and services available throughout Glasshouse Country. The event is being organised by local community members Sue Mureau, Stacey O'Brien and Katrina Croton, with the assistance of Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and a small grant from Sunshine Coast Council. The motivation behind the event is to provide individuals with the tools and resources in order to help cope with the challenges of daily life and to help residents fully participate in their community and promote a sense of belonging and inclusion. It is an exciting opportunity for businesses to network and showcase their products and services to the wider community, and for community members to try new things, explore new ideas, join new clubs or community groups, and expand their contacts and opportunities. To find out more about the event, check out the Facebook page 'Thrive – Health & Wellbeing Expo'. Applications are now open for stallholders registration, forms can be arranged by messaging through Facebook or by sending an email with your details to Sue’s email: suemureau42@gmail.com. Thrive 2018 is also seeking donations for the goody bags available on the day, volunteers to help with set up and pack down, and event sponsorship.

The team at RAHD Hair and Beauty are busy putting together a special hair care and pampering fundraiser evening on Wednesday June 13. The ‘Ladies Night’ event will give “local goddesses” the chance to indulge in some gorgeous hair styling and massage, as well as gaining some fabulous styling tips, massive product discounts and the opportunity to win some awesome prizes on the night. The evening has been planned to assist salon co-owner Reece Aberley to be part of a skill sharing initiative by Australian-based charity ‘Hair Aid’. Reece and the team will be teaming up with their colour and haircare brand partners, Matrix, to put together a fantastic evening filled with styling and haircare tips and products. All proceeds will go towards the ‘Hair Aid’ venture and participants will also be able to purchase hair care products at half price on the night. The ‘Ladies Night’ fundraising event will be held at the Landsborough salon from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. Tickets are $25 and bookings can be made by contacting the salon on 5439 9029.

Cut through the confusion and find out what the true nutritional requirements are for a healthy body and mind. Join Jody Pollard from Total Nutrition Dietitian at the Maleny Library on Thursday June 14 at 1pm and learn how to successfully incorporate healthy eating into everyday lifestyle choices. Get tips on label reading and find out which parts are important and learn how to include all food group varieties as recommended by Australian Dietary Guidelines. Become empowered to make wise food choices and participate in a mindful eating exercise with a healthy food recipe demonstration and taste-test. Make sure you register a spot in this free workshop by phoning 5475 8989 or booking online through the Libraries website.

Scholarship for Mapleton local

Each year, the Rotary and USC Community Fund awards three $4,000 scholarships to outstanding postgraduate students who also completed undergraduate degrees at USC. One of the three successful candidates this year is Mapleton local Joanne Boon, who is completing a Master of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) and is looking into stigmatising behaviours and attitudes that could compromise mental health treatment. Since 2001, the 17 combined Rotary clubs of the Sunshine Coast have raised more than $168,000 to support the fund. The Rotary and USC Community Fund committee includes representatives from most of the 17 Rotary clubs on the Sunshine Coast.

Health Check Help with the symptoms of depression

Sleep apnoea a common condition

with Powerful Transformations

with Beerwah Amcal Pharmacy

If you have concerns that you or someone in your family is suffering from depression, you can gain a better understanding and find out about the signs and symptoms by visiting the Beyond Blue website at www.beyondblue.org.au. Beyond Blue advises that while we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without any apparent reason. That depression is more than just a low mood – it’s a serious illness that has an impact on both physical and mental health and it affects how people feel about themselves. There is a range of signs or symptoms including, but not limited to, that the person may lose interest in work, hobbies and doing things they normally enjoy. They may lack energy, have difficulty sleeping or sleep more than usual. It’s important to note that everyone experiences some of these symptoms from time to time and it may not necessarily mean a person is depressed. Equally, not every person who is experiencing depression will have all of these symptoms. Mary Crawford from Powerful Transformations is a Maleny-based Clinical Hypnotherapist who can assist with the symptoms of depression. You can contact Mary to find out more about the services she can provide on 0457 230 952.

Powerful Transformations (Change Your Life Forever) CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPIST

• Suffer from Anxiety? • Depression? • Trauma?

Sleep apnoea may be more common than you may realise, affecting approximately one in four Australians. It is a condition that causes you to stop breathing during your sleep. Many are not aware they have the condition, and untreated sleep apnoea can negatively impact your health and quality of life. Typical symptoms include snoring, poor concentration, daytime fatigue, irritability and mood swings, morning headaches, waking up gasping for breath and frequent visits to the toilet during the night. Sleep apnoea is often associated with other chronic conditions, so talk to your Amcal pharmacist to see how our services can help your overall health and minimise your risk of developing sleep apnoea. Fortunately, with the right support your sleep apnoea can be managed. We can offer a Heart Health Check, Diabetes Risk Assessment/management review or medication review, a ‘Be Good to Yourself’ management program, as well as quit smoking plans. Please visit amcal.com.au/bookings and book online, or call in to see Angela, Gaye and your friendly team at Beerwah Amcal Pharmacy today to see how they can assist you.

Phantom Thread

Set in the glamorous haute couture world of 1950s London, ‘Phantom Thread’ explores the sinister and controlling power renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day Lewis) exerts on his models and lovers. That is, until he meets Alma Elson, a young waitress (German actress and newcomer Vicky Krieps). Alma soon becomes Reynolds' assistant, muse and lover. However, unlike her more loyal, obedient predecessors, the perverse and increasingly manipulative Alma refuses to be controlled by him. The ensuing tension has been described as ‘Hitchcockian’, a mood enhanced by British composer and musician Jonny Greenwood's "intoxicating" musical score. The other female in the House of Woodcock, Reynolds' sister Cyril (Lesley Manville), manages the day-to-day operations of the fashion house and exerts significant influence on him. Tension is heightened even further by the family's dark past, adding a gothic dimension. Released in December 2017, and described by a Guardian critic as "a deftly spun yarn", ‘Phantom Thread’ was nominated for six Academy Awards. Day Lewis, after completing the film in which he plays a role described as "a perfect fit", announced his retirement after an illustrious career in which he won three Academy Awards. This is not the first time acclaimed US director/writer Paul Thomas Anderson has collaborated with Day Lewis. An earlier partnership in ‘There will be Blood’ (2007) earned an Oscar for the actor. Variously described as a film of "claustrophobic elegance" (Anthony Land) and "propaganda for patriarchy" (Aleksandar Hemon), ‘Phantom Thread’ appears to polarise critics. Why not decide for yourself? When: Saturday June 2 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Dinner from 6pm-7pm catered by Spaghetti Junction; tea/coffee and homemade slices stand; and drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm Cost: $13 adults (non-members), $8 students with ID, and children under 16, $5. Tickets also available at Maleny Information Centre, Maple Street, 9.30am-2pm, and at the door on the night Info: www.malenyfilmsociety.info

‘Iolanthe’ delivers pomp, spectacle and melodies

Did you enjoyed the Royal Wedding? Thrill to the ceremonial procession, the magnificent costumes, and the sheer splendour that is the British Monarchy at its best? Then you are sure to love the upcoming Maleny Singers production of the musical comedy ‘Iolanthe’. With spectacular costumes coming all the way from Perth for the occasion, and a magnificent set built by Chris Iolanthe, played by Viera Keogh, Ward and his merry band of helpers, with her fairy sisters Wendy the stage is set for spectacle. Merefield-Ward and Tracy Bianco Then there is the music; Arthur Sullivan was always noted for his catchy tunes, but ‘Iolanthe’ gives him a broad canvas on which to display his talents. In Act 1 the rousing ‘March of the Peers’ will provides a visual and musical feast of pomp and ceremony. Then there are the dance numbers that set feet tapping, and later Iolanthe's deeply moving plea to the Lord Chancellor will touch your heart with emotion. The grand finale even has its own mass wedding! But above all, ‘Iolanthe’ is a satirical musical comedy, and one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best, poking its gentle barbs at politicians in general and the British class system in particular. Here is a show with something to enchant audiences of all ages and tastes. ‘Iolanthe; will be on at the Maleny Community Centre on June 16, 17, 23 and 24, with tickets from Trybooking.com or the Maleny Information Centre.

International talent at Glass House

The extraordinary Canadian singer-songwriter Jon Brooks will be visiting Australia during the month of June and has agreed to a local performance. An incredible opportunity exists for Hinterland residents to get up close and personal with this celebrated musical artist when Jon performs at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesday June 5 at 7pm. An award-winning songwriter who is also beautifully proficient with a wide range of instruments, Jon is dedicated to uniting folk song tradition with today’s stories. A four times nominee for English Songwriter of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, he has an uncanny ability to press his ear against the heartbeat and the soul of the times we live in. Jon’s thoughtful music is filled with grey and morally ambiguous characters living on the outskirts of approval. His songs express sentiments about healing and hope, and through his work he strives to inspire others to believe our present world can be improved or healed. This will be a local concert of the highest international calibre not to be missed. For more information about this incredible talent visit his website at www.jonbrooks.ca. Jon will also be appearing/teaching his craft at the Winterbreak Music Retreat and the Loose Acoustic song-writing workshop, more details at www.looseacoustic.com.au. Tickets for the local Glass House Mountains performance are $20 and $10 for concession/children, available via Trybooking at https://www.trybooking. com/379001.

Jobs for the yard in June

• It’s your last chance to prune hydrangeas back almost to ground level. Use the cuttings to propagate new plants. • Citrus leaves may develop a yellow colour. This is because the cool soil slows down nutrient uptake through the roots. You can boost them with a foliar spray of a fertiliser with trace elements. • Pinch out the tips of your sweet pea plants to make them bush up and produce more flowers later. • Plant onions now. A good rule of thumb is plant by the shortest day of the year and harvest at Christmas. • Mound soil around potatoes already growing, to stop the surface-growing potatoes from going green and to promote more potatoes. • Cut down the old stems of asparagus; top-dress them with well-rotted manure or compost and mulch. • Use winter as the time to tidy up around the garden. Stack pots away, clean up fallen branches, reset garden edging, and generally get the garden looking shipshape. • Early bindi-eye may start to appear and if so, hand removal is easy, or spray with an appropriate herbicide. • Rose planting can be done this month. Plant them in a sunny position in soil enriched by compost and animal manure, and a little bit of rose planting fertiliser will help. Vegetables Plant Asian greens, asparagus, beans, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chilli, cucumber, endive, garlic, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnip, peas, radish, rhubarb, silver beet, spinach, spring onion, turnip and tomato. Flowers Plant ageratum, alyssum, amaranthus, bedding begonia, calendula, Californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, cineraria, coleus, cornflower, cosmos, dahlia, delphinium, gerbera, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, gazania, hollyhock, Iceland poppy, kale, lobelia, marigold, nasturtium, pansy, petunia, phlox, portulaca, roses, salvia, snapdragon, statice, verbena, viola and zinnia.

Sport Yun Hap Taekwondo Open Eight San Taekwondo members recently travelled to Brisbane to compete in the annual Yun Hap Taekwondo Open. The competitors displayed excellent sportsmanship and exceptional skill to win three gold medals and six silver medals. This was an astounding achievement, with clubs participating from all over Queensland. The instructors were very impressed with the great manner that all students displayed while competing. A highlight of the day was Glen Robinson who, competing for the first time, managed to win gold in both the masters under 87kg, blue belt division and the open blue belt heavyweight division. Coach Cameron Taylor said: “Competitions are not only fun but are a great way for our students to be able to test their skills. Many of our members are training 4-5 times per week and it's great to see them so motivated to train every day and enjoying competing so much.” Several junior fighters from San are now hoping to qualify for the Queensland team and will travel to Canberra to compete in July before the selection event later that month. The senior team is preparing for the Australian team selections also being held in July. Well done to all competitors.

Charlie Bidgood, Glen Robinson, Jaksen Robertson, Bodhi Robertson, Jade Korczynski, Lara Korczynski, Conner Adam and Sonia Wearing with the club’s supporters

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails played a great game on Wednesday, against Maleny Magics going down 33-40, 3 sets to 5. Long rallies and well played. Thanks to Christine, Gerry, Janet and Cynthia. Whistlers played at Witta, against Ballinger Breezers. It was a bit windy and a cold morning, but we had lots if rallies and running, so we warmed up pretty quick. Good tennis as usual, but we were a bit short on games to bring a win home. Score was 30-38 games, 4 sets all. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats travelled to Coolum to battle the Tourists. Pauline, Annie, Libby and Jenie did their best but couldn’t bring home the win. But we won 2 sets which, against one of the top teams, was pretty good. Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Ken Barker The Caloundra group visited on Friday to play golf croquet. Sally Adams with Vince and Val Carbery hosted the fun and coffee. Members are encouraged to participate in this activity which is held on the third Friday of the month and is both enjoyable and relaxing. On Sunday Kath Smith and Ken Barker played a ladder competition which Ken won 8-4 so the ladder remains unchanged. Vince and Donna Manning started a game against Nick Cram who was joined by Kath after tea. Nick and Kath won 18-17. The fourth round of the Lochwood Shield competition was played in Nambour on Wednesday. Our team consisted of Donna, Nick and Ken. They played a Nambour team of Theo Kleiberg and Cliff Heidenreich. In the morning Donna played well to defeat Theo 26-10 while Nick got bogged down against Cliff to go down 13-19. The doubles, in the afternoon, would decide the round. Donna and Ken played Theo and Cliff. Donna, who is in great form, made a fine opening break of 8 to put pressure on the home team. There followed a period of ragged play where mistakes were made on both sides. Maleny, however, eventually broke away to win 26-12 despite a nice break by Cliff. Thank you to Nambour who hosted. Well done Maleny. Maleny won the round 2 games to 1 to remain undefeated at this stage, halfway through the season. Two games of golf croquet were played on Thursday afternoon. A team of Wendy Whitby and Kath played Bev Sockhill and Donna. Donna played two spectacular jump shots but it wasn’t enough to stop both games going to Wendy and Kath: 8-5 and 5-2. We are having our 25th birthday party on Saturday July 21. Anyone who has been a member of the club since its inception is welcome to come. If you have stories or photos please contact Priscilla. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Contributed by Graeme Glover It was another great week at Maleny bowls club. Great weather has certainly made bowlers come out to play. Thanks again to all who supported the weekly Tuesday pairs. Well done to Don Ginns and John Kapatanic who came out winners for the day. No winners of the lucky jackpot. Wednesday night winners are still hard to pick. Upsets, cold beer and great burgers are my tips for next week. Miles Allen, our Wednesday night main man, outlined a number of possible finalists for the competition. It is a very open competition for the much sought after, coveted trophy which has had some illustrious previous winners. Mobile Kingdom has had their wheels fall off which is a surprise to all. They looked the goods. It has been noted that this loss of form coincided with beer becoming available on tap. Coincidently Amigos have improved their form for possibly the same reason. Well done boys, stay with the program. The new team in the competition, Young Ones, had to win in golden point. Great to see this new found form at the right end of the season. Well done. Krackerjacks had a ring in, who is very familiar with the green, in getting their win. It was great to see Roy having a game. Mister Toucher himself Paul Kemp was back to his usual best in teaming with Don and Marg for another win for the Bridge Club. Kristine and Min combined nicely with Ian C to keep the Outlaws in the winner’s circle. I am making no tips for this week as my hot tip for the previous week, the Tutors, were a scratching due to the overwhelming pressure of favouritism, a little like New South Wales in State of Origin. We will outline to all our Origin night bowls arrangement. No, Jim King is not flying back to be the token blues supporter. Scroungers was well supported with 19 bowlers. Thank you all for your support in making Friday such a great afternoon of bowls, beer on tap and nibbles at the club. Thanks Joe for filling the big shoes of Miles in running the competition with Doug. A number of players travelled and represented the club at events that keeps us as a very recognisable bowls group within the community. Thanks and well done.

Beerwah Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese This time of year really is perfect for golf, even if the golf itself isn't perfect! Thursday, May 24, we played a Four Ball Ambrose, thanks to our sponsors Heather Henn, Andrea Campbell, Cathy Stone, and Brenda Briese. We had a field of 57 players and the winning team was, coincidently, the sponsors minus Heather Henn (who was unable to play) and instead, her replacement, Cindy Godfrey, with a score of 57.6 nett. Runners up were Carolyn Hale, Libby Gemmell, Monica

Dangerfield and Cheryl Peut with 59.6 nett. NTPs: 2 – Hale team; 5 – S.Kenway, L. Flavelle, D Flint and K Kemp; 16 – F Smith, L Barnes, M Pavitt and L McCamley; 2nd shot, 18 – L. Doyle, M Wormwell and T Keast. BRD went to 62.6. Don't forget we are running ‘Ladies Let’s Golf’, encouraging women to the game, on Friday June 1 and Sunday June 3, both at 10.30am. So if you've ever been interested in the game why not give it a try? Call the club on 5494 0630 or Golf Queensland 3252 8155.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by Suzanne Tennison Seven Year 7 and 8 students from Beerwah High School in Education Services are participating weekly in a friendly competition of wheelchair basketball against students from Maleny High School, with all of the students having a disability of some kind. The program was created to provide inclusion for our students with physical disabilities. No modifications are needed when playing this sport which is fantastic for students with a physical disability. The students have played for four weeks and are improving each time. So far they have learnt to sit in the wheelchair while manoeuvring with the basketball. It has helped students develop strategies for team building where decision making, athletic skill and friendly interaction are all evolving. We must thank the Suncoast Spinners group headed by Sharon Hill at the University of the

Sunshine Coast who organised the participation of volunteer coaches Jamie Coach Jamie Hill with and Brooke who assist Dylan McMurtrie the students to learn techniques each week to enhance their game plan. They both guide the new Beerwah students weekly, encouraging them to not give up, try again and learn about their strengths. Thomas Robins in Year 8, who has a verified disability of cerebral palsy, aided by his wheelchair has improved his skills so well since last year he now plays in a weekly night competition. His brother Jac also participates. The students continue to improve very much, passing the ball and throwing goals. It's so great to see students show confidence and resilience in a different setting and keep going to play an exciting game.

Just for Laughs An interesting turn of events

Construction had begun on an expansion of a building used as a brothel to increase their evergrowing business. In response, the local church started a campaign to block the business from expanding – with morning, afternoon, and evening prayer sessions at their church. Work on the brothel progressed right up until the week before the grand re-opening when lightning struck the building and burned it to the ground! Following the fire the church folks were rather smug in their outlook, bragging about "the power of prayer". But late last week the brothel’s owner/madam sued the church, the preacher and the entire congregation on the grounds that the church "was ultimately

Your Stars ARIES March 21 – April 20 Old contentions fade away and a new vision inspires you. It will be good for you to start the week energetically and all your deserved rewards will come from sustained progress. Focus on your goals and by the week’s end you will feel as if you have accomplished something. At the end of month the Full Moon energises travel, education and publishing. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The Full Moon this week is in Sagittarius, but on the opposite end of the heavens, Mercury enters the sign of Gemini, creating a see-saw imbalance. Usually this indicates various events for you will come to a climax, so it will be resolved. Get ready to do some study, research and investigation. It’s not a time for impulsive action, more reflection. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 The Full Moon enters your opposite sign in Sagittarius at the end of this month. However, not only will it give you a high emotional time, but as the Moon and Venus are seen together in the night sky at this time, you will recall many wonderful liaisons that have happened to you over the years. A good time to write your journal about romance! CANCER June 24 – July 22 With this week’s Full Moon in Sagittarius and Mercury, the planet that rules your thoughts, entering Gemini, you have two major things with which to concern yourself. The first is psychological and the second is physical. So what does all that mean? Well it’s time to balance your life and get those daily routines sorted that may need adjustment now.

responsible for the demise of her building and her business – either through direct or indirect divine actions or means." In its reply to the court, the church vehemently and vociferously denied any and all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise. The crusty old judge read through the plaintiff's complaint and the defendant's reply, and at the opening hearing he commented, "I don't know how the hell I'm going to decide this case, but it appears from the paperwork, that we now have a brothel owner who staunchly believes in the power of prayer... and an entire church congregation that thinks it's all BS." LEO July 23 – August 22 At the Full Moon you have a fire sign in Sagittarius and an air sign with Mercury. Since you are a fire sign, this should be a week where you are up with the birds, beating the crowd, and working all the advantages! Write down the goals that you need to reach and take aim for them every morning. Your selfexpression is stimulated by the Full Moon. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Hopeful positivity pops up at the right time this week under the Sagittarius Full Moon. Also, what occurs is that Mercury is your ruler and it enters Gemini at this time of the Full Moon. Your focus will be to seek the proper balance of high ideals and pure practicality. You have the willingness to settle down and a clear focus on your goals. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 So it is going to be the widest of horizons this week, and the broadest thinking, unfolding many possibilities. Possibly this Full Moon enlivens any planned trip and perhaps there are lectures and courses you are to attend. It’s not the greatest time for gambling, however it would still be fun to buy tickets in local raffles. Old responsibilities are now retired. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Venus enters Cancer around the 19th and it brings a warmly satisfying experience for you this week. This is because the Full Moon is in Sagittarius enhanced by Venus and the Sun, at various times, helping financial matters. The planet Pluto, in Capricorn, also with Saturn in the same sign, restores faith and optimism on any relocation you need to make.

8

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 What a week all you Sagittarians are going to have as the Full Moon is in your sign to light the differences in the needs and attentions between you and others. The planet Jupiter, being in Scorpio, works wonder with Venus now in Cancer, to give you time to learn important money management. Rewards and connections are plentiful with interesting options. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The Full Moon at month’s end tells that you may have trouble getting your message across. Some old situations, kept under wraps for far too long, need to be brought to the surface. At the month’s end the Moon will go into your sign, after the Full Moon in Sagittarius, and so you have the freedom to advance personal fiscal plans. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Enjoy the playful vibes of the May sunshine and Venus working with the Sun in the same sign of Gemini. This usually means fun recreation, children, creativity, romance, publishing and writing. All these are highlighted at the Full Moon in Sagittarius from the 29th to 30th. Conditions should be delightful around your work place or home office, as family fun permeates. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Take time to talk to your loved ones and don’t forget to listen to what they say. All this is peaking wonderfully well at the 29th for the Sagittarius Full Moon. Mercury throws you a blessing by entering Gemini and your romantic hands are led towards beautiful artwork and flowers to take home! It is a perfect time to be content with your gains.
