Hi Everyone Being a community newspaper generally means that hard hitting investigative journalism and shrewd political comment pieces aren’t part of what we do. Generally we leave the hard hitting news to the Coast’s daily newspaper. But I don’t think I can let the last week go by without making some sort of comment on what has been a roller coaster ride for our local federal MP, Peter Slipper. There have already been volumes written on how it happened, why it happened, who did what and who’s to blame. But when it all settles down, whether you agree with it or not, Peter Slipper is still our local member and he still has an important role to play in representing us whenever called upon.

We asked Mr Slipper what it means for locals who have issues/problems they need addressing. He assured us that his office and contact details remain the same. He’ll still be available to attend local functions and events if invited. He’ll still be taking up local issues to Ministers, government departments and other groups if requested. And he’ll still take our concerns to the floor of parliament if needed. So that’s Peter’s commitment to us. Now we need to keep him to his word and make him do the job that he was elected to do. Regards,

Returned World War II serviceman and Sunshine Coast local Nev Anning has been paid tribute by having a bridge named in his honour. State Member for Pine Rivers and former State Member for Glass House Carolyn Male MP and Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the honour for the 95-year-old was well deserved. “From today, the Beerwah rail overpass will be known as Nev Anning Bridge,” Carolyn Male MP said. “Mr Anning is an outstanding member of this community and it is only fitting that he be acknowledged in this way. “We are very pleased that we are able to honour such a valued member of the community. Nev has lived on the Sunshine Coast hinterland since he was 15. “He is a founding member of the Beerwah Peachester RSL and is recognised for his contribution to the local community, including volunteer work and involvement in Rotary and other organisations. “Local Councillor Anna Grosskreutz and I worked with the community on the proposal to name the overpass in honour of Mr Anning and we are both delighted that this has come to fruition,” she said. “All feedback received by the Main Roads department was in support of naming the

overpass after Mr Nev Anning. This is a testament to Nev Anning and how much he means to the local community. “I’d also like to wish Mr Anning a very happy 95th birthday for last Saturday. I think a bridge naming makes for a fantastic birthday present,” she said. Mr Nev Anning was a Prisoner of War in Singapore’s Changi Prison and has written a book entitled ‘A Mug from the Bush – Memories of Life and War.’ Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle paid tribute to Mr Anning’s contribution to the hinterland community, hero is a word that is often misused today, but in any sense by which that word is defined, Nev Anning exceeds it,” Mr McArdle said. “Nev is a man who never forgot where he came from and his roots, and in that alone there are valuable lessons for us all to learn” Mark said.

Road to Peachester remains slow and winding

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell had advised GCNews readers that he would keep them up-to-date with any progress he made in finding out what plan the state government had for repairing the section of Kilcoy - Beerwah Road which is currently down to a single lane due to landslip damage. Transport and Main Roads department has recently advised that the design solution is complex because of the geology of the area. Their project team has been reviewing two major options (up and downhill works) and the impacts on the adjacent landowners and natural ecology. These impacts are being balanced against the need to provide a costeffective, long-term solution. Reconstructing the road on its existing alignment by repairing the slip on the downhill side requires extensive repairs to create a stable embankment, and there is difficulty with safely achieving site access on the downhill side. The option to repair the road by excavation on the uphill side moves the road alignment away from the slip zone, increasing the safety margin. This site is also safer to access during construction and provides opportunities to improve drainage and the road alignment, increasing safety for road users. The design is expected to be finalised in coming weeks and work is expected to start in mid-January 2012. "I guess it really does go without saying that I am incredibly disappointed with the ongoing delays to fixing this road," Mr Powell said. "I acknowledge community frustration has been around trying to get repairs started before the wet season but with the works now not expected to start until January 2012 we may not be that lucky with the weather. "What I don't want to see is any sort of rain event that will send Main Roads back to the drawing board on this project and many others in the electorate," he added. "The community does have a commitment from me to keep Main Roads to their word and subject to the weather I will be ensuring that works have started by mid January and that all timeframes are adhered to. "So far the community request to have a meeting with representatives from Main Roads has gone unanswered and I give my assurance that I will not let this request go. I will continue to follow up the Minister until we get an answer," Mr Powell concluded.

Great 20 year celebrations

Glasshouse Country Dog Wash

Warm water hydrobath, ears, eyes & nails,

Contributed by Helen Jakeman, Secretary

On behalf of the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade I would like to thank everyone who attended our 20 year celebration day on Sunday, November 20. The day was a special day in which we were able to acknowledge not only the original committee from 1991, but all the wonderful members who have volunteered so much time over the last 20 years. From the great displays of memorabilia everyone could see what our brigade has achieved over the last two decades in the way of vehicles, communication, equipment and the building of our fire station. On the day we were visited by Blazer and Little Squirt (a little fire engine), both these visitors added to the attraction for the children who attended. We had our fire appliances on display; our collar tank was filled with water (this is used on the fire ground for a portable source of water for helicopters and fire appliances) and also a display on the use of different fire extinguishers. No one went hungry as we had a free sausage sizzle with Ian Cleeland from Brisbane cooking the sausages on his steam barbecue.

During the official ceremony, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service presented 21 of our members plus a member from Glasshouse and Ridgewood Rural Fire Brigades with 15 Year Service Medals. Congratulations to all of the medal recipients, this is an outstanding effort to volunteer so many years to a local organisation. To finish our ceremony, Giff Tutt, on behalf of his sister Jan and their families, opened our latest extension – the ‘Stan Tutt Training Room’. The room was dedicated to Stan Tutt who recently passed away. Stan was the secretary to the original Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade when it was decommissioned in 1965. This extension was built through a grant that we received from Queensland Fire and Rescue Service. We would like to thank local builder Troy Brahim for his great effort with the building of this extension. Our Celebration Day would not have been the success that it was, if it wasn’t for the members of our brigade who volunteered so much of their time helping to build the training room, preparing the displays and attending on the day thank you.

Countdown to 2012 solar eclipse begins at Beerwah High Staff and students of Beerwah State High School were star stuck on Monday, November 14 as the school celebrated exactly one year to an astronomical event that has been viewed with wonder, awe and even terror in the past. In 12 month’s time, on November 14, 2012, a total solar eclipse will occur in far North Queensland. From approximately 5.45am the moon will gradually pass between the Earth and the Sun and around 6.38am the sun will be totally eclipsed by the moon. As the moon orbits the Earth, the shadow path of the eclipse will travel across Cape York from near Kowanyama on the west coast through to the Cairns/ Port Douglas which are on the east coast. The shadow path will be around 140km wide. People in this path will experience one of natures most spectacular and awe inspiring events. Anticipation is already running high at Beerwah State High where last week telescopes equipped with special filters to allow safe viewing were used to observe activity on the sun’s surface. Mr Terry Cuttle from the Astronomical Association of Queensland supported the event by bringing two ‘hydrogen alpha’ solar telescopes and together with the school’s telescope more than 300 students safely viewed our nearest star. “We can’t wait for this event. It will be a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about this amazing object,” said Beerwah High teacher Mark Bateman. “The views included surface detail which is normally hidden behind the sun’s bright surface glare. Students could identify numerous Prominences (large amounts of hydrogen plasma extending outward from the sun’s edge, often in a loop shape) and Filaments (relatively cool gas suspended above the surface of the sun) that appeared as wavy lines across the surface.” “From the Sunshine Coast we should have about 86 per cent coverage of the sun and using various methods of safe viewing, both direct (using a dedicated solar telescope) and indirect (making pin hole cameras and binocular and telescope projection), it should be a spectacular sight,” Mr Bateman said. The next Total Solar Eclipse in Queensland will occur on July 22, 2028 in far South West Queensland. Two other major solar events will also occur within the next 12 months, with a total lunar eclipse around midnight on December 10, and 11 and the last transit of Venus for over 100 years will occur on June 6, 2012. The path of totality and information about the 2012 eclipse can be found at the Astronomical Association of Queensland website http://www.aaq.org.au

Glasshouse school trainee takes out principal award In 2009, Unity College employed their first school-based trainee, Ben Davis, who lives in Glasshouse. Ben worked with the Information Technology department every Wednesday, while completing a Certificate III in IT. Over the past two years staff and students alike have benefitted from Ben’s developing expertise in this area. “The traineeship allowed Ben to develop skills in an area that he’s passionate about and also gain a nationally recognised qualification, while he completed his senior schooling,” said Bianca Lemon, Pathways Coordinator and acting assistant principal student services. After completing his traineeship in 2011, Unity College continued to employ Ben. In his role as Internet-WhiteBoard Trouble-shooter, DVC Assistant and i-Pad Administrator, Ben was instrumental in the roll-out of new technology across the College. Ben’s contributions have been recognised throughout the College community and he was awarded School-based Trainee of the Year in 2009 and a Principal’s Award at the 2011 Awards Night. Ben intends to pursue further study in IT next year.

Dancing up a fundraising storm for the East Africa food crisis

Each year at this time, students at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School usually start collecting shoeboxes, and filling them with gifts for the annual international Christmas Shoebox appeal. This year, however, the school has changed its focus, and instead has planned a number of fundraisers to support the ongoing crisis in East Africa. Last Friday night saw the St Paul’s Africanthemed disco raise over $1,500.00. This amount will be added to the $900.00 raised from the two recent sausage sizzles and ‘treats’ afternoons (chips and ice blocks in the undercover area on a Friday afternoon after school) and the $3,700.00 raised by the St Paul’s Church community. With two sausage sizzles left to go before the end of the year, the hope is that the combined total from St Paul’s will top $7,000.00 Last week, the Australian government announced that it will match, dollar-for-dollar, all donations to the East African food crisis, until November 30. “It’s so fantastic,” said Mrs Monica Bennett, St Paul’s church member and the coordinator of last Friday night’s disco. “From our little St Paul’s community alone, we’ll be sending across over $14, 000.00 just from us! How good will that be!”

Painting made easier with Paint Place

Stepping Out Podiatry, stepping up their education

Sarah Shipton

‘Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one’, Malcolm S Forbes. Being an allied health professional does not stop with a university degree or qualification. It is a commitment to ongoing education and lifelong learning. With a Bachelor in Health Science (Podiatry), Kelli Kavney Sarah Shipton and Kelli Kavney of Stepping Out Podiatry are enthusiastic about their commitment to provide ‘evidence based’ quality podiatry services, through ongoing research and attending podiatry specialist courses. Both podiatrists have previously undergone a training course in foot mobilisation and manipulation techniques. In October, this knowledge was extended and they both completed an Advanced Level Mobilisation and Manipulation training course. This intensive training lends to enable the podiatrists to restore movement and proprioception (nerve stimulation) in the many joint spaces of the feet and lower legs. During the average life time we take enough steps to walk around the earth four times, our poor feet! With injury, poor alignment and general wear and tear to the feet, adhesions will often form around the joint and thus restrict proper movement between the two bony surfaces. Mobilisation and manipulation techniques are widely used by chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths and medical doctors. The first foot mobilisation and manipulation techniques were developed in America in the 1920’s, and are now being utilised by all practitioners due to the overwhelming benefits. So, talk to the team at Stepping Out Podiatry in one of their three locations, Landsborough, Beerwah or Maleny if you would like to be treated with the most up-to-date techniques available today. Phone 1300 881 082.

Whether you are looking to do some touch up work over the holidays, or a full scale paint job on your home, look no further than Paint Place at Beerwah. Paint Place Beerwah offers a friendly and personalised service to help with all your paint needs. Owner Anthony and colour technician Kathleen have a combined 26 years experience, so there is not much they don’t know about the industry. Together with Anthony’s 17 years of industry experience, you can be assured of professional advice from the team at Paint Place Beerwah. On November 19, Beerwah Lions members worked on a special metals recycling project organised by recycling Lions project manager Lion Greg Howard. James Archibald, our visitor from twin club Bergvliet in Cape Town came along to check it all out and to gain ideas for his own club in South Africa. The Beerwah Co-Op, being community minded, holds old batteries for Lions to send to a recycling venue. This recycling project is additional to the aluminium cans collection which runs on the first Saturday morning of each month. All funds raised go towards needy charities.

Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains Inc.

Contributed by Bob McLean

The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains has over recent years contributed to the Landsborough Conference of St Vinnie’s winter and Christmas appeals. The club feels this is a very meaningful way to support the community. At a recent meeting the president Paul Jamieson addressed the meeting on the history of St Vinnie’s and told of the higher number of families in need of support this year. The club presented Paul with a cheque as a contribution to the St Vinnie’s Christmas appeal. We would encourage other community service groups in Glasshouse Country to support this wonderful charity. You can contact St Vinnie’s at the store in Cribb Street Landsborough.

Top local service

My son and I wish to commend Top Gun panel beaters and Beerwah Mechanical Services here in Beerwah. We have only recently moved to Beerwah (eight months ago) and both these businesses were recommended to us. A HUGE bouquet and THANK YOU to both businesses for their patience, empathy and understanding. On viewing their quote for repairs and a RW cert. which was honest and accepted, we appointed both businesses to carry out a job on our car which was road-raged in Brisbane. Alas as the car repair work was under the umbrella of a Brisbane Film co, whom for reasons of nonpayment by their clients, delayed the payment of our vehicle which had been promptly booked in and repaired by Top Gun and Beerwah Mechanical Services. Both of these businesses had advised us of cost effective ways of obtaining the necessary parts for the job. After much embarrassment/phone communication/explanations /apologies on our part, neither of the above mentioned businesses got nasty or aggressive, and I was SO relieved by their empathy and understanding. Even though they have bills and employees to pay, they were

so understanding of the circumstances which were totally out of our control. A huge hooray to both Top Gun’s Gavin and Wayde plus Martin the mechanic. Your pristine work ethics and kindness will never be forgotten. We will promote both businesses at every opportunity. Immense thanks. L & B C (owners of Mirage)

$500,000 rate payers going to Australia Zoo?

We cannot get footpaths in Glass House Mountains; walkers, adults and children are forced to walk the streets, dodge cars, trucks and whatever else also use our streets. However, $500,000 is earmarked to allow a footpath to be laid from Beerwah to Landsborough so that visitors to our area can walk to Australia Zoo instead of using the zoo bus that meets the trains. Granted, there is already a half laid footpath, this money will be used to have it completed. The money that has been wasted by this new Council, which shows just how incompetent they are. Firstly we lose our water, did I not say ‘Watch Unity Water?’ Have any of you had a bo peep at what they made on our water? The wasted money on the ridiculous ‘entry statement’ as you turn off the main arterial road through Glass House Mountains, I wonder how it hasn't been knocked over as yet, everything else gets damaged in our area. We cannot have the council grass cut or medium strips mowed and kept clean, however, we can have money that should be used in the community to assist ratepayers, given to assist a private business. I have no doubt this footpath will end up like the forgotten footpath leading out of Maleny on your way to Kenilworth. Oh, it's on the right hand side of the road, true, it really is there, a bit hard to see as the grass grows in that area also. I don't know about you, but Parkview Road needs a footpath and we pay our rates here. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

Simple mistake turns into police matter

I wish to bring to the attention of your readers, how a simple error can turn into a police matter. I recently filled up my ute at our local service station. Our vehicle runs on gas but uses some petrol, mostly for starting. As a result when we fill up I generally put in a small amount of petrol and then fill up on the LPG. My wife went in to pay when I had nearly filled the gas tank, this is our normal practice, as using the gas pump stops other drivers accessing all the other pumps from that side. Much to our surprise four weeks later we were contacted by the local police advising us that we had been reported for a ‘Petrol Drive Off’ Offence. It would appear that when my wife went in to pay she was asked if she had got any fuel at which she said yes. What she didn’t realise is that she was only charged for the petrol and not the LPG gas. The police report stated that ‘Customer got fuel and gas, asked customer if they had fuel, and they did not mention LPG as well’. It seems that all blame for this mistake has been apportioned solely to my wife and no acknowledgement of how the operator’s actions may have contributed to this unintentional mistake. I would have thought that the operator would have known that we had used both petrol and LPG, as they monitor the pumps visually and with cameras. Had the operator said petrol instead of fuel, I suggest my wife would have told the operator it was petrol and gas (which are both ‘fuel’). While we accept that an error / misunderstanding probably happened, I am disappointed that the local business tried to suggest, without even contacting us, that it was all our fault and we purposefully committed an illegal act. The lesson to your readers is to take care if you have used two different pumps. Make sure they have charged you for both, otherwise you too could be accused of being a criminal. As a result, we won’t be supporting this local business anymore, which to date we have always done. Peter Robinson Glass House Mountains

Living Well Stargazer December 2011 with Chirone Witsen

Lunar eclipse and the Summer Solstice As December starts, we are in a Mercury retrograde period, so remember to double-check any messages you leave and any details you write down. Don’t be surprised if appointments are changed and plans are altered. This period can be used productively to catch up on paperwork and clear out your files. Mercury goes direct again on Wednesday, December 14. The Full Moon this month is also a total lunar

eclipse, falling in Gemini. This eclipsed Full Moon invites us to find a balance between our logical mind and our intuitive knowing. With Uranus stationary it is also likely to shake up any sense we have of permanence and force us into unexplored territory. The eclipse intensifies the energy of this Full Moon, which is exact just after midnight on Sunday, December 11 (effectively the night of Saturday, December 10). Relationships take on a much more serious tone now that Venus is in Capricorn, yet this goes well with Mars in Virgo, both Earth signs so the lovers are sensuous and grounded, moving at a slower pace and taking time to smell the roses. On Wednesday, December 21, just before the Solstice, Venus moves into quirky Aquarius where she will want a lot more freedom to do her own very unique thing. The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year (and shortest night) in the southern hemisphere, the traditional mid-season time of

celebration and feasting. This year it falls on Thursday, December 22 as the Sun moves into Capricorn. The New Moon falls in Capricorn on Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25. Although Christmas is traditionally associated with feasting and overindulging, this New Moon in Capricorn invites us to begin a new cycle of self-discipline. This would be a great time for making your New Year’s Resolutions! Best wishes for the festive season. Fisher Australia Day Awards

News from Parliament

Nominations are still being called for the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards 2012. This is the 13th annual holding of the awards, which were started in 2000 by me to provide an opportunity to recognise those who work to make a positive difference in their community. Nominations can be made for a variety of endeavours, from community services, industry and commerce, the arts and sport. Nominees will also be considered for the prestigious Fisher Citizen of the Year, the Fisher Junior Citizen of the Year and the Wortley Youth Encouragement Award. Community Organisations can be nominated for the Des Scanlan Memorial Award. Nominations for this award are open to all community organisations doing valuable, and often unrecognised, work in the Fisher electorate. Nomination forms are available from my office or by phoning 5444 4888. Nominations close on December 16.

Christmas for the Troops

Time is running out soon for readers to send Christmas gift packages for free to Australian troops serving overseas. There are almost 4,500 Australian soldiers based overseas who will spend Christmas away from their families, and the ‘Christmas for the Troops 2011’ programme gives ordinary citizens a chance to make their time away a little more enjoyable. Christmas is a season for spending quality time with loved ones and for those who are serving Australia in overseas postings, in challenging surroundings, being away from their loved ones is doubly difficult. The Christmas gift programme gives us a chance to say thanks to the troops, to let them know we are thinking of them and we appreciate their efforts, and to give them a gift package that aims to bring a smile to their face. Australia Post is offering free postage for the packages. The packages must be dropped off at Australia Post before Monday, December 5 (for the Middle East) and Friday, December 9 (for other destinations). For details visit my website www.peterslippermp.com.au

Birth Rates

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released details of recent research into birth rates. The research showed that in 2010 Australia's total fertility rate (TFR) was 1.89 babies per woman, a small decrease from 1.90 babies per woman in 2009. The number of births in 2010 increased for most states and territories, with the exception of Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania. Details are available at: www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/3301.0

Hard to believe but the last Parliamentary session for the year has come around already. The most recent sitting week saw us debate several varied topics including the Education and Care Services National Law (Queensland) Bill. The purpose of the Bill is to implement nationwide legislation for the Child Care industry in an attempt to make it more transparent across the states. It will aim to introduce nation-wide standards and provide for a new national quality assessment and public rating system. There are good and bad elements to this Bill, but perhaps the most concerning is the expected increase in fees for parents, at a time when families can least afford it with all the cost of living rises. I also spoke on the Water and Other Legislation Amendment Bill, particularly the changes to the Wild Rivers legislation. The LNP is committed to joint management with traditional owners in national parks. The LNP acknowledges the Indigenous stewardship of Queensland's rivers, a stewardship that has existed since time immemorial. This program embodies a commitment to supporting that stewardship. Which is why the LNP has committed to funding an additional 30 Indigenous Rangers should it be elected. For more information on our Cape York and Indigenous Ranger announcements visit www.candoqld.com.au/policies/ better-infrastructure-and-better-planning/protecting-cape-york-with-localsnot-against-them.

Student Christmas art competition

Last year I held a friendly art competition inviting local school students to submit a Christmas themed drawing to feature in my 2010 electorate Christmas card. This year I decided to do things a little differently with the winning entries to be displayed in a special Christmas edition of my eNewsletter. My eNewsletter is distributed monthly to those people registered on my contact list so if you would like to receive a copy make sure you email me at glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au or register in the 'Keep Informed' section of my website www.andrewpowell.com.au

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

In the winter of 1964, Nelson Mandela arrived on Robben Island where he would spend 18 of his 27 prison years. Confined to a small cell, the floor his bed, a bucket for a toilet, he was forced to do hard labor in a quarry. He was allowed one visitor a year for 30 minutes. He could write and receive one letter every six months. But Robben Island became the crucible which transformed him. Through his intelligence, charm and dignified defiance, Mandela eventually bent even the most brutal prison officials to his will, assumed leadership over his jailed comrades and became the master of his own prison. He emerged from it the mature leader who would fight and win the great political battles that would create a new democratic South Africa. ‘The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela’, Frontline. What qualities allow a person to prevail, just as Mandela did, in the toughest of times?

Perspective :- This enables us to see the bigger picture within the heat of the moment and it also helps us see opportunity in the obstacles. Adapt :- able to make adjustments. This capacity enables us to adjust to the demands of the situation. Be flexible and fluid. Faith :- is an essential quality of people who persevere through the crucibles of life. Faith is the belief that something better is ahead. Like the biblical Joseph, Nelson Mandela spent many years in prison. But also like Joseph, Mandela was taken from prison and virtually ushered into the seat of power at the head of government. Mandela’s faith in God strengthened him. Instead of allowing his jailors to define him, Mandela by God’s grace fashioned a heroic identity for himself, one that inspired millions in Africa and also around the world. God bless.

A to Z of Trades and Services Talkin’ Trades - Five minutes with Kel McNamara from KLM Energy Services With summer upon us, I would like to talk about safety with your barbeque, camping cylinders and equipment. In the photo you will see a 4.5kg cylinder that was recovered from a barbeque fire, where the hose had perished close to the cylinder. The leaking gas ignited which in turn set the fat that had splattered on the cylinder alight. On this occasion a fire blanket was used to contain the burning fat, allowing the user to turn off the gas cylinder, and as a result no one was hurt and there was minimal damage. We can learn a lot from this incident. Here are some important safety tips we should all follow. • LP gas is stored under pressure. By law, your cylinder should be tested every 10 years, as the valves can be a source of gas leakage.

• inspect and replace worn flexible hoses regularly • always use Australian Gas Industry approved equipment • place cylinders where they cannot be knocked over • always keep your cylinders and equipment in good condition, corrosion free and protected from fat splatter • always have a current (not expired) fire extinguishing device in close proximity • check all connections and hoses with a biodegradable soapy water mix regularly KLM Gas offers a free pickup and delivery service for 9 kg and smaller cylinders on our scheduled delivery days. If you would like to use this service ring our office on 5493 0493 between 8.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday. I hope to bring you more helpful information about LP gas in the future.

expert tree maintenance and removal

Contributed by Tohm Hajncl, Amber Leaf Landscaping

This gorgeous member of the ginger family fits under an umbrella known as tropical gingers. Originating from tropical Asia through to Northern Australia, there are approximately 80 species of curcumas and hundreds of cultivars. Unlike many other gingers, curcumas die back in autumn with lush foliage emerging again in mid spring earning it the nickname of Hidden Ginger. All have stunning flowers ranging from 50mm to over 300mm, with such a broad spectrum of colours that even the fussiest of gardeners will be satisfied. Curcumas are the ideal sub-tropical alternative to temperate bulbs and are an easy plant to keep providing a few simply rules are followed. 1. Some like sun while others prefer shade, so research your choice and plant with the appropriate aspect. 2. They do not like winter water. Plant them in soil which is well drained and rich in organic matter. Remember, they originate from the rainforest floor. 3. When the spring shoots appear, fertilise well and ensure an adequate water supply. 4. Mark the spot where the plants are so you don’t accidentally dig them over during the winter. Tumeric (C. longa) is probably the best known of the species. Here are a few other varieties that I would recommend. For a full sun position, try the ‘Siam Tulip’ (C. alismatifolia) or ‘Voodoo Magic’. If the aspect is more filtered light, ‘Jewel of Burma’ (C. roscoeana) or ‘Jewel of Thailand’ (C. cordata) are ideal choices. If you prefer natives, the ‘Cape York Lily’ (C. australasica) is the plant for you. Curcumas make great pot plants as they can be hidden away behind the shed during winter and brought out as a stunning display when the flowers appear. It is important during winter not to water curcumas as the rhizome will rot. A great way to ensure this is to simply lay the pot on its side. Some varieties are fantastic as cut flowers, lasting for weeks in the vase. Curcuma plants are usually only sold when flowering and will be available in the shops from around Christmas. www.gcnews.com.au
