NOVEMBER 30 2016
A
t this time of year it would be hard to miss that we are now entering the Festive Season, and while Council’s Christmas trees have been decorated for more than a month, they have finally started turning on the lights. These trees are located at Glass House Mountains, Maleny, Montville, Mapleton, Conondale and Kenilworth. Quite a number of local people have already been sharing the joy of their Christmas Light displays at their homes, and this week we are putting the call out for those ‘Christmas enthusiasts’ to let us know their addresses. We plan to print a list in our last two editions for December – just phone 5438 7445 or email us at reception@gcnews.com.au with your address. Once again this year it is not a competition, just a way of sharing their hard work and their love of Christmas. And as you have seen on the front cover, our office has gone a little nontraditional with our Christmas tree and Lottie Nisbett has been busy working her magic with lots and lots of balls of wool. This year’s theme is 'pastel rainbow' – we hope the locals enjoy it! We have also included a section on ‘Christmas News’ so hopefully you won’t miss out on the massive amount of Christmas activities that are happening! Regards,

Local News Plastic bag ban from 2018 Last Friday Queensland Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles announced that from 2018 they will be introducing a ban on light-weight single-use plastic shopping bags. “The scientific evidence about the harmful impacts of plastic in the environment is growing every day, and there is considerable support for a plastic bag ban,” Dr Miles said. “Retailers and environmental and community groups who attended plastic bag workshops in Queensland in 2015, and at a national plastic bag roundtable in Sydney in February 2016, agreed there was a need to restrict single-use plastic shopping bags. “The Queensland Government sees a plastic bag ban as a critical step in a long term plastic pollution reduction plan, and we are now seeking public feedback on how best we can move forward with this initiative,” Dr Miles said. Speaking in Sydney where he attended a Meeting of Environment Ministers, Dr Miles said the Palaszczuk Government had decided to start the litter-busting ban in 2018 – to coincide with its Container Deposit Scheme. “It’s a logical step from the CDS to introduce this initiative to bring about a vast reduction in the numbers of plastic shopping bags blowing in
the wind, entering our waterways, harming our wildlife and spoiling our environment,” Dr Miles said. Earlier last week the LNP announced that if they won the next election that they would also be introducing the ban. The Australian Marine Conservation Society's Marine Campaigner, James Cordwell, said AMCS welcomed the announcement as a hugely significant step towards reducing marine plastic pollution and the severe impacts it has on our unique marine life. “Plastic pollution travels easily from land to sea," Mr Cordwell said. "It blows in from bins and garbage dumps, or flows through stormwater drains into our waterways and eventually the sea. Once in the ocean, it slowly breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces which are eaten by animals at the bottom of our food chains. “The banning of bags, along with the implementation of a Container Deposit Scheme, are two encouraging steps for Queensland. These are crucial moves to put an end to an era of these highly damaging items impacting on our marine environment. “We welcome the bipartisan support for this critical measure to cut the amount of plastic pollution ending up in our oceans."

Local Women’s Rugby League competition launched A new Women’s Rugby League competition has been launched by the Sunshine Coast and Gympie Rugby League. Likely to commence in April 2017, five teams have already announced that they will be fielding teams including Beerwah. Games will be played on Saturdays and matched up with Senior Men’s games where possible. Beerwah team captain and former Jillaroo, Samantha Beasant, said that the announcement was an exciting progression for the women’s game on the Coast. “As much as we love playing in the Brisbane competition, we are always looking to develop and nurture local girls and women within our own backyard,” Samantha said. “We are confident that playing locally will create greater interest and opportunities for females on the Sunshine Coast.” The new competition is suitable for ladies of all body types and fitness levels, aged 17 years and older. The Beerwah Club encourages any new player to experience the excitement of the game, whilst getting fit and sharing the great game of rugby league with a fantastic group of women. Samantha said that anyone who has watched a game of Women’s rugby league would be excited by the skills and commitment of the players, and she encourages local women to get involved in this exciting opportunity.

Dingoes show plenty of bite
Police round-up
The first fully national and Football Federation of Australia sanctioned indigenous football championships were held at Nowra in New South Wales recently.
Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash which occurred in Landsborough on Saturday afternoon. Initial investigations indicate around 5.20pm a utility travelling south along Steve Irwin Way collided with the rear of a stationary hatchback. As a result of the impact the hatchback collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction. The 86-year-old passenger of the car, a woman from Glass House Mountains, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the car, a 67-year-old woman from Glass House Mountains, was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition. The driver of the hatchback, a 66-year-old woman from Landsborough, received non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the utility was not injured. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
And a team from south east Queensland – called the SEQ Dingoes – competed. Not only that, but they took out the Open Men’s Championship … undefeated … and five players were locals. Matt The team was put together by Wayne Alberts (manager) and Allan Takken (coach), comprising the best up and coming young indigenous players from the south-east corner – including the five local lads. Doing us and their culture proud were Ronald Woulfe (BeeGees), Johnny Woulfe (BeeGees), Tim Woulfe (BeeGees), Liam Wruck (Mooloolah) and Matthew Alberts (Sunshine Coast Fire / Ronald Kawana). Wayne, who is a manager at Kawana Football Club, said the group just hit it off. “With limited training and playing time together, the boys just clicked and played like a well oiled

machine,” said Wayne. “It was a pleasure for us all to compete in the tournament. It was a fantastic feeling of collaboration between everyone there – and to actually win the inaugural championship was a Timothy dream come true. “The fellas are over the moon and are looking forward to next year’s event when they’ll defend their title. “To help them celebrate, the whole squad have been invited to a formal dinner at Parliament House in Brisbane. This, along with the $10,000 in prize money they won, is a fitting reward for all their efforts.” Liam Wayne mentioned that without their sponsors – including Totally Work Wear, Football Brisbane, Ironbark Timbers and Landsborough Hotel – they would not have got there at all. Anyone interested in sponsoring a winning team for next year can contact Wayne by emailing him at Jonathon albertslaw@bigpond.com

Initial information suggests around 11.40am the teenage girl was walking through a park off Allan Avenue when she was approached by a man. The man then grabbed the girl before she managed to break free and flee the scene. Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the man in the vicinity around the time of the incident. He is described as about 17 years of age, 185cm tall with short spiky blonde/brown hair. He was wearing a white shirt with long black pants, white shirt and black leather shoes.

After a lengthy application process, the Maleny Girl Guides are the grateful recipients of a $35,000 government community grant, recently presented by Andrew Powell MP. The funds have been earmarked towards the desperately needed restoration of their hut which has seen hundreds of girls pass through its doors during its fifty plus years of existence. The Maleny Girl Guide group formed in 1962 and they soon realised they would require a permanent location. On September 26, 1962, the first meeting to discuss establishing a hut was held. Located in Cedar Street, Maleny, the Maleny Girl Guide hall was built during 1964 by the parents, and community service groups such as Apex. The hut has a rich community history with notes from the time indicating donations and assistance from numerous community members – such as a log from the property of Mr and Mrs Jack Keleher donated to be milled for the flooring, windows donated from a Mr Thompson and a donation of the stumps and door from Mr Larney to name a few.
E T ET
The hut was officially opened on April 24, 1965. “The hut is just too good to be knocked down, however it is in serious need of renovation – it’s just beautiful with its lovely old timber flooring,” said Leanne Large, President of the Maleny Girl Guides support group. “Hopefully with the renovations, it’ll go for another 50 years.” While the $35,000 grant won’t fix everything, it will get the ball rolling – allowing for the removal of the asbestos roof, re-cladding of the building and a new roof. If you would like to find out more about the Maleny Girl Guides or would like to donate to their restoration process, please contact Leanne on 0447 239 725.

Police Beat with Constable Susan Lowndes Party season
It’s a great time of year, the weather is warming up and the year is winding down. It’s time for Christmas parties, New Year celebrations and getting together with family and friends. While you are planning for your next event there are a few things you should consider. If you are planning a large party you might like to register a ‘Party Safe’ event on the police website (www. police.qld.gov.au/online/Register-an-Event.htm) – this lets police know who to talk to if we get called to attend. Generally police are called in relation to noise complaints from neighbours. If you are going to have music playing, even if it is only from a dock speaker or similar, be considerate of your neighbours. If you are planning a larger party perhaps let neighbours know in advance. If police attend they may issue a ‘Noise abatement direction’ if the noise is considered to be unreasonable. There is no cut off time or time when music can be played at a certain level, just that it should be reasonable, even during the daytime. Music playing for hours that can be clearly heard from neighbouring properties is still unreasonable. Did you know that the out-of-control event legislation can apply to any gathering of twelve people or more?
The party may be declared an out-of-control event if even some of the people at the event commit what may be considered relatively minor offences such as trespass or obstructing traffic. Penalties for organising the event can be as much as $18,000 or three years imprisonment and if you are convicted you may also be ordered to pay for some of the cost of police attending the event.
Safe driving
The fatal five of speeding, drink/drug driving, seat belts, fatigue and distraction are always particularly targeted by police during the Christmas holiday period. If you are planning to drive, plan not to drink. If you can, stay over at a friend’s nearby or decide who will be the ‘dry driver’ before you go. Maybe get a taxi or courtesy bus and remember, if you are going to walk home after drinking, walk with a sober friend or in a group and stick to the footpath. Only cross the road where there is enough lighting for you to be clearly visible to motorists. Fatigue has a similar effect on driving performance as having a blood alcohol content of 0.05. Over half of fatigue related crashes occur between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Be aware of the signs of fatigue at any time of day. Things like yawning or blinking more than usual or feeling drowsy, not being able to remember the last few minutes of driving, changing speed for no reason or drifting across lanes are all signs that you are suffering from fatigue and should pull over and have a break.

Call out for Maleny Show Personalities 2017 Each year The Maleny Agricultural Show is a massive annual drawcard for our area. Planning for the 2017 show (Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28) is already well underway and now is a great time to consider getting involved and nominating for a 2017 ‘Show Personality’ position. If you are aged 15 years or over, nominations are now open for the following categories: Rural Ambassador, Charity Person, Miss Showgirl and Show Princess. This year, 21-year-old Shae Geritz was awarded the title of Show Charity Person. Locals may know Shae from her work at the Landsborough IGA and Kinder Marlee Childcare Centre. Her fundraising efforts included a Barefoot Bowls and Golf Day which raised over $2,000.00. Proceeds went directly towards facility upgrades and additional seating at the showgrounds. Encouraged by family members to enter, Shae found the entire experience extremely worthwhile, rewarding and fun and she urges others to consider nominating for these positions. “I’m naturally quite shy by nature, but it really was a fantastic experience that boosted my confidence,” Shae said. “I was able to meet new people and experience new things – it was a lot of fun.” It is worth thinking about your fundraising efforts early if you are considering nominating for the Charity Person role. The process is very straightforward – on deciding

Maleny Arts and Crafts Christmas Fair
British know-how makes the show flow
Lyn and Rodney Browne are a retired British couple from Tavistock, England, who have spent the past eight summers in Maleny. This means that for the past six years they have participated in that most English of entertainments, the pantomime, in Australia. They are the masters of the props for the Maleny Players’ annual Christmas show (this year it’s The Wonderful World of Aladdin) and their career backgrounds have certainly equipped them for the organisation involved in keeping track of 100 bits and pieces (large and small) over multiple performances. Rodney was member of the Royal Navy for 34 years, retiring with the rank of captain; Lyn was a researcher for television documentaries after raising their three children, one of whose immigration to Brisbane 14 years ago originally brought them to South-East Queensland. “We’d never done panto at home, but both grew up with the tradition,” says Lyn. “Everybody goes to a pantomime at Christmas time, although funnily enough in the UK it starts on Boxing Day; I always thought it was a way to let your hair down after behaving on Christmas Day!” For Rodney, behind-the-scenes organisation is a doddle after helming four trips to the Antarctic during his naval service. “The last two times I took my own ships with a crew of 140 aboard and spent eight months away,” he recalls. “I was quite pleased that I

Props to the Maleny Players’ backstage crew members Lyn and Rodney Browne brought them all back alive.” After his experience of the icy Antarctic and shivering English winters, Rodney enjoys the never-ending summer of his current life, with good golf courses at Beerwah and Maleny and a plethora of friends to tee-off with. Meanwhile, Lyn loves the slapstick and cream pies of the annual pantomime as well as the children screaming with excitement and seeing the younger performers develop their skills each year. “We think we are improving at getting the props on and off, too,’’ she says. “But we have our own separate sides of the stage for each performance. The worst thing someone can ask me is ‘What scene is this?’ because I am always working two scenes ahead. It all flows.” This year, the Players present ‘The Wonderful World of Aladdin’ over five performances at the Maleny Community Centre from December 10 to December 18. Tickets ($20.00/$10.00/under-5 free) are available at www.malenyplayers.org or Imelda’s on Maple, Maleny.
The Maleny Arts and Crafts Group Christmas Fair opened its doors on Friday to a flurry of people. There were over 40 tables of handcrafted goods for sale. Pottery, paper craft, woodwork, fashion items, glassware, fabric creations and fine art were just some of the items to choose from. This year the group ran a table competition for the best looking table. The judges for this monumental task were Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell ably assisted by his Assistant Electorate Officer Lyn Parker. The tables were all stupendous and picking one winner was impossible. Two first prizes and two second prizes were awarded. The first prize winners were Judith Malings and Renee Warner. Second prize winners were Mieke van Sambeeck and Joanne Cramatte. If you didn’t manage to visit the Christmas Fair, then make a date for our May Fair. Information will be posted soon on malenyartsandcrafts. blogspot.com.au

Give the joy of reading this Christmas As we start preparations for Christmas, spare a thought for those who may be doing it a bit hard and give the gift of literacy. As a part of council’s Sunshine Coast Libraries Christmas celebrations, the annual Books4Kids Christmas gift drive has begun. Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Salvation Army have once again joined forces to promote literacy and spread the Christmas cheer to less fortunate children around the region. The concept is easy. You simply buy a new children’s book and drop it in to your local library. It will then be wrapped by the Salvation Army. Books will be then distributed to less fortunate children and families by the Salvation Army through their Santa workshop. The drive runs until December 16.

Community Group
Updates
Changes to Prostate Cancer Support Group
Contributed by Bob McLean After five successful years supporting several hundred locals on their cancer journey it was time for the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer (PC) Support Group to review the group’s effectiveness. Recent gatherings have had reduced attendance numbers from the thirty to forty in 2011 to single numbers in recent times. The support group was originally formed to meet as an evening group to provide support for men who were still working and were on the PC journey. The co-ordination team is now of the view there is a need to expand the message delivered and the support being offered. The PC Support Group will continue providing a service to men on the prostate cancer journey, taking advantage of the group at the Menshed where we will have between 35 to 50 men to listen to the health message being delivered. The support group will continue to provide quality guest speakers delivering the good health message on a wider range of men's health and cancer treatment subjects. The group will still gather on the second Wednesday of the even-months of the year. However, we will now meet in the morning, with a guest speaker. We will start at 9.30am sharp and go until 10.00am or when the questions stop. The gathering will be at 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah (Glasshouse Country Care site) not much further along Peachester Road, and partners will still be encouraged to attend and to remain a part of the support network. The first gathering at the new location will be on Wednesday, December 14 at 9.30am. The guest will be Craig Allingham, physiotherapist and the author of ‘Prostate Recovery MAP - Men's Action Plan’. This change may no doubt be less convenient for working blokes, but hopefully they can reschedule to find the time to remain engaged. If you require more information call Bob on 0427 606 240.
Great Summer Reads
With only a month to go before Christmas, Maleny Library staff offer the following range of great summer reads catering to various tastes to keep you reading during the holiday months: ‘The Good People’, the second novel by award-winning Australian author Hannah Kent: This is well-researched historical fiction, inspired by true events reported in 1820s Irish newspapers. The reader is transported to a small, isolated rural village in south-west Ireland where society is dominated by superstitious tradition and religious belief. Honora Leahy and old “crone” Nance Roche, who has the “knowledge”, seek answers and direction from forces beyond their comprehension in order to heal “changeling” Michael, once a healthy toddler, now unable to walk or speak. Beautifully written, a must read. ‘The Kingdom of Ohio’ by Matthew Flaming: A meaty time-travel story set around the building of the New York subway system, a time of great scientific discovery and experimentation. ‘Between the Vines’ by Tricia Stringer: A light romance set in the Adelaide wine region, with a good plot woven around a family winery. ‘Briar Patch’ by Linda Sole: A romance set in 19th century England full of mystery and murder against a background of class divisions and love. ‘The World Without Us’ by Mireille Juchau: An award-winning novel about the changed lives of a family following the loss of a child. Set in a small country town, similar to some in Hinterland, it is beautifully observed and poetically written. Not an easy read, but thoroughly compelling. ‘Freeing Peter’ by Peter Greste and family: When foreign correspondent Peter Greste is arrested and imprisoned in Egypt, his family instigate an unwavering campaign to secure his release. This honest account of the initial shock and consequent challenges and disappointments encountered in their mission reveals Peter’s strength of character, and the remarkable dedication of a family committed to ensuring his freedom. ‘Honeycomb Kids’ by Anna Campbell: An honest and inspirational read for parents/carers on how to raise resilient, capable, caring kids with over 300 ideas on how to create and contribute to a sustainable lifestyle.

Thank you to the KinderMarlee families 2016
Small Centre with a Big Difference What is it about KinderMarlee that has all the tongues wagging? Two years ago, when Janet Schluter transformed Landsborough Childcare into KinderMarlee Early Childhood Centre she never imagined that her little centre would create such an impression. Janet has worked in the childcare field since 2004 and is committed to advocating for children to be viewed as competent, contributing citizens; including the right to experience a carefree childhood with a strong sense of home and community. The difference between more traditional childcare models and
KinderMarlee is a team that have created an innovative and authentic early childhood space. KinderMarlee is a place that allows children time to wander and wonder; to be who they truly are, spaces to be alone, to be with others, to move freely, to be inspired and to learn. The pace is flexible, unhurried and child oriented. There is a vast array of learning possibilities through freely accessed indoor / outdoor natural environments. These spaces invite open ended interactions, explorations and a connection with nature. The centre is unique in providing opportunities for siblings to be together if and when they choose, and whenever they choose. Studies have shown that children in mixed age groups have more varied interactions and positive benefits that do not occur as deeply or frequently as children that only interact with peers their own age – in confined and age segregated rooms. Being a forerunner in the examination of meaningful and organic childhood pedagogy has been challenging for the team as they work to share with the local community the benefits for children in a less common setting. In fact all staff that worked under the old model state that they wouldn’t go back to the traditional model of ‘teaching’ as the benefits they see now out weigh the old ways by far – including a huge reduction in behavioural outbursts, separation anxiety and children’s sense of dependency. The centre has generated so much interest in the field of early education, that the team regularly hosts other centre directors, educators, professors
and education experts who are inspired to experience the methods first hand. The staff are committed to early childhood education and attend regular training to keep abreast of the latest research on child development and studies. They support active learning and encourage hands on investigation with the teacher and children seen as co-researchers. The team promote play as the most meaningful and appropriate way for young children to learn and develop. The staff at the centre are all long term and qualified, boasting two Early Childhood teachers to facilitate a Government Approved Kindergarten Program. So if you happen to hear about a ‘hippy little alternate centre’ in Landsborough, pop in and feel the difference for yourself. It could be just the place that you and your children are looking for to connect, contribute and create.

John Dunn and ‘The Age Of Agony’
Guest speaker at the Peachester History Committee Christmas lunch and meeting on Sunday, December 4 will be John Dunn, former magistrate and coroner, now retired at the Gold Coast. For many years he has been involved in re-enacting colonial history, appearing in period costume with the 73rd Regiment of Foot. John has a special interest in the history of medicine, and his topic is ‘The Age of Agony’. He will delve into the art of healing in the early days of European settlement in Australia, and speak of the contribution made by Dr William Redfern. This remarkable physician was sentenced to death for involvement in a mutiny, however the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he was transported to the penal colony on Norfolk Island. His services were so highly valued that he was emancipated and returned to Sydney, where he eventually became family physician and surgeon to Governor Lachlan Macquarie. John Dunn’s presentation will be illustrated with slides and his collection of surgical instruments. The meeting is at the Peachester Hall from 11.00am, with lunch at approximately 12.00noon and the guest speaker at 1.00pm. Visitors are always welcome, and please bring a contribution for the shared Christmas lunch. For more information contact Helen 5494 9557 or Jan 5494 2301.

It wasn’t all Christmas cheer when the Zonta club of Blackall Range held their end of year party at the home of their service chairman June Robson; first they assembled essentials packs for women who may find themselves in a refuge for Christmas. “I hope these packs are never used”, said one Zontian hoping that no woman needs to be in that situation at Christmas. Members also brought wrapped personal gifts for the women, but the work was made easier by Zontians Ruthie de Courcier and Kaye Gardner playing carols on their harps. Zonta is a worldwide organisation of executives in business and the professions who work together for the advancement of the status of women, and President Alison Huth said a major and ongoing project is to eradicate violence against women and children. “This is, unfortunately, a project that has been in place for many years, together with fellowships, scholarships and awards to young women at school, undergraduate and post graduate level. Education and the encouragement of young women to take up careers in non-traditional areas are very important elements in programs that we implement at local, district and international levels,” she said. In March the club held a very successful International Women’s Day event that covered another of Zonta’s aims – to reward women who have worked hard in their communities, often without recognition. President Alison presented the inaugural Woman of Achievement Award to Maleny woman, Mrs Pamela Marsden. She received a certificate and a Zonta rose in a pot,

We at Blackall Range have taken special responsibility for the eradication of fistula in Ethiopia and Liberia and recently held a successful morning tea to aid those programs. “One of ZI’s awards to assist women is the Amelia Earhart Fellowship, to support post graduate students in aeronautical engineering or related sciences. Amelia Earhart was a Zontian and this significant fellowship has been awarded since the year after she disappeared over the Pacific in July 1937. We will have a special guest speaker for our January meeting to recognise her achievements, and we will be happy to welcome guests. “Keep a watch on the paper, our website www. zontablackallrange.org.au and our Facebook page for information on this,” said Alison.

They have drawn upon their extensive 30 year plus experience in the field to create ‘the perfect optometry experience’. Every aspect of the practice, from a clinical and technical level through to design and a welcoming ambiance, has been well thought out with the aim to ensure that patients leave happy. Leo and Mark are supported by the effervescent Nicky Spencer who brings her vast sales and fashion experience eye along with senior dispenser Krystle Taylor who brings over 10 years of technical knowledge and an in-depth understanding of lenses - to assist patients pick the perfect look. Leo and Mark grew up to follow their father into the optometry field, yet both have brought an interesting diversity of life experiences to result in this unique venture. Mark is a qualified optical technician with extensive experience in finance and business – he also has a keen eye for design. Leo, an optometrist and GP, graduated from QUT in 1980 before moving back to Mackay to work with Mark in his father's practice. Leo has always The Hartley Family

loved research and study as well as innovative practice and his career and professional involvement over the years reflects these personal attributes. Even at a relatively young age he was committed to professional development long before this became standard business practice. With links to optometry schools in Melbourne, New South Wales and Queensland, as a young man living in North Queensland Leo would instigate the invitation of world class speakers in the industry to visit Australia allowing access to a high calibre of professional development at an international standard. Another innovative project he started involved the creation of a non-competing optometry group that would meet every six months throughout Queensland to serve as a focus group for the Associate Professor Leo Hartley
industry allowing a forum that helped raise industry standards. During this time Leo also established a multi disciplinary vision clinic which he ran for 17 years in Mackay and volunteered his time before moving to Melbourne to establish an Ophthalmology practice. During these years, he continues to lecture at the University of Melbourne. Retiring at 50 he realised that he still had a lot to contribute – and so he returned to study as a GP specialising in tropical medicine which was partially inspired by his charitable involvement helping people in Vanuatu with their vision issues for the last 18 years. Leo went on to be a practicing optometrist in country Victoria before a visit from brother Mark set the wheels in motion for what is h2 Vision Centres. When patients visit h2 Vision Centres, not only are they able to access the latest in vision technology in a comfortable and accessible
environment, they also benefit from the wide ranging experience and knowledge that Leo and the team provide. This experience allows Leo to bridge a gap between general practice and optometry. He takes the time to assess issues and problems with a holistic or ‘big picture’ outlook that often enables effective resolution to seemingly complex or puzzling issues with an in-depth knowledge and compassion. While the expertise of the team is exceptional, the range of diverse designer branded retail products will provide the right look for every type of face. With a mantra that glasses should do something ‘for’ people not ‘to’ people, their huge range of fashionable and up to the minute eyewear will ensure that patients have enough choice to leave completely happy. As part of their ongoing commitment to enhancing the patients' looks, and as an additional service as a practicing GP, Leo also offers patients anti-wrinkle injections – perfect for those who would like a refreshed look for the festive season. h2 Vision Centres also provide peace of mind guarantees including 12 month unconditional repair / replace service and a 30 day total satisfaction exchange service. The h2 Vision Centres first store is an important step towards the realisation of two dreams by two brothers – but this is just the start of the story. You’ll see…

You Said It Peer review?
Gerry Muller (GC&M News November 16) states that “we cannot look to opinions that have not passed through the process of peer review and subsequent publication in a scientific journal”. Surely he realises that many Nobel laureates have had peer reviewed papers rejected by prestigious journals and later won Nobel prizes for their work. Both ‘Nature’ and ‘Science’ rejected Kary Mullis’ description of a new approach to analysing DNA for which he later won the Nobel Prize in chemistry and ‘The Journal of Clinical Investigation’ had peer reviewers emphatically rejecting discoveries that would earn Rosalind Yalow the Nobel Prize in medicine. There have been many cases of fraudulent papers being peer reviewed and published by major journals only to be retracted later and, time and again, peer reviewed papers have fallen apart under post publication scrutiny. Peer review is a form of gatekeeping that places unconventional thinkers at the mercy of their more conventional colleagues and seems designed to extinguish rather than nurture the bold original thinking that leads to scientific breakthroughs. A ‘Bing’ or ‘Google’ search of ‘peer review flaws’ exposes all the problems. Rejected journal papers may ‘carry no weight’ in ‘publish or perish’ academic circles but exposure on scientific websites and scrutiny by other scientists provide a far more effective and rigorous method of assessing the worth of contentious scientific studies. Two little boys
In the GC&M News in the November 23 edition there was a letter included about the song ‘Two Little Boys’, a song sung by Rolf Harris. The reference to the song brought back one of my memories from 1975 when I was a police officer stationed at the Gosford Highway Patrol. I remember one of my work colleagues asked if I had heard the song, ‘Two Little Boys’ and how he had heard an interpretation of the song being about two fellas who were gay. So, I listened to the song – it is about two little boys who are now grown up and in the war, one gets shot and his mate goes back and says his horse is big enough for two and they ride off. I think the writer of the recent letter needs to listen to the words of the song; it doesn’t matter who wrote or sung it, but what is important is the meaning and the message behind it. Take care Donna
It was with sadness that I read the farewell from Donna who has had her employment from Woolies terminated. I have known Donna for a number of years through my daughter who worked for Woolies as a teenager. Donna has always been so supportive of her and the many teenagers that work at Woolies at sometime. I always found Donna so friendly and helpful and she will be sorely missed. Take care Donna and all the best for the future. Marilyn Podmore Beerwah
Watch your speed
Having traversed Tunnel Ridge Road between Mooloolah Valley and Landsborough for the better part of 25 years and on dirt as well as bitumen, it was more than a surprise to suddenly find that the posted speed 16

limit had changed from 70kph to 60kph overnight without so much as a word of notice or warning. During the first few days, I was accustomed to irate drivers thinking that I was just dawdling along before the message sank in that the speed limit had changed. Again, the police patrols that use the road regularly would have had a field day issuing speeding tickets. Would it have been that difficult for the Department of Transport and Main Roads to advertise the fact that limits had changed, either by signage at each end of the road or in the local newspaper? Incidentally, I have tried unsuccessfully to have the speed limit lowered through the Mooloolah township where the speed of 60kph is totally ludicrous. The previous signage that used to say ‘50k through built up areas’ has since disappeared, so now it is open slather to see how fast they can drive between the two speed control humps on Bray Road and how fast they can negotiate them without losing control. The amount of burnt rubber on the roads is testament to the morons that use motor vehicles as toys. Name Supplied Mooloolah Valley
Protect our water resources
Greg Newton, staunch supporter of the National Party, has honoured my humble letter about unlimited access to Queensland's water resources to mega mining companies like Adani with some questionable criticism. For the record Greg, you are quite mistaken about me and the Greens; I do not represent the Greens when I write any letters nor have I been a member of any Greens Party in recent years. However I am very confused by Greg's reply, which kind of indicates that jobs in mining are more important than any other jobs like in farming, etc. So according to Greg's line of argument, it seems that it is just too bad if regional and rural areas in Queensland are affected negatively by the government permitting unlimited free access to Queensland water resources to certain privileged major mining corporations because they get 'preferential' treatment thanks to the LNP votes on this crucial matter. So when groundwater and surface water quantities drop significantly because of big mining companies’ exclusive unrestrained access to this same resource, what is that going to do for rural and regional Queensland's residents that don't have the fortune of working in one of those mines? Either they can afford to buy extra water in to cover the shortfall in dry periods, or they pray for a miracle, or they simply go broke. So is this what the LNP and those who vote for them would call 'collateral damage'? Whatever happened to the Nationals that they appear to favour 'special deals' for multinational corporations without any safeguards in place for the actual folks who live and work in rural areas? Are we gonna see charity truckloads of water instead of haybales getting carted into outlying areas to help those poor buggers survive, build another few pipelines, or what grandiose solutions do the LNP offer in the worst case scenario of no water supply available thanks to foreign-owned mining companies guzzling it all up?? The myth of superfast broadband
Mr Molloy's letter of 16 November regarding his self-professed inability to be ageist because he is too old is quaint. In case he didn't realise, anyone (no matter what their age) can be insulting over age. A definition: 'prejudice or discrimination against a particular age-group and especially the elderly', or 'the stereotyping and infantilisation of older and younger people by patronising language'. Anyone can do it. Mr Molloy did it about his own age group by stating retired elder scientists no longer have knowledge of their subjects and don't know what they are talking about. This is a very stereotypically patronising sentiment. Going to another NBN story – under last week's headline, ‘NBN users' key complaints centre on slow speeds, drop-outs, Ombudsman Report says' on the ABC website, it says: "Poor speeds and drop-outs are among the biggest problems for people connected to the National Broadband Network (NBN). The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman's annual report shows complaints about faults with the NBN rose 147.8% from the previous year, while general NBN complaints almost doubled to 13,406." The so-called superfast broadband from towers that NBN talks about when they come to the hinterland, and local letter writers also talk about, is a bit of a myth. Realistically a wireless tower is likely to give about the same speed as ADSL2 with copper wire and many have found this. The Ombudsman's report quoted above from November 17 indicates increasing problems with NBN standards in Australia. To top it off, Internet experts have said many times NBN's network will be out of date before it’s even finished. And that it’s way behind the rest of the world's standards. The take-up rate for NBN services is less that 40% in Australia to date. What a waste of $32 billion and now they ask for even more. Richard Giles Conondale

Living - Arts Pastel Society of Australia Contributed by Una Robinson
The final monthly meeting of the Sunshine Coast Group for 2016 was held at the Woombye Hall with 35 interested pastel painters present. The exciting demonstration commenced with four master pastellists performing a round robin; Karol Oakley, Tricia Taylor, Chris Blake and Christine Clark. Each commenced their own painting and after a set 10 minutes’ time the paintings were moved on to the next person who then continued, but using their own choice of pastels. This rotation continued with breaks in between until each had their own original artwork back on their easel. They were then given 15 - 20 minutes to complete the painting they started. Each artwork was signed by all four master pastellists, temporarily mounted with a matte board and auctioned off to assist the Pastel Society to support painters in their artistic endeavours. Incredible results in around one actual hour of painting each to achieve the finished artwork.

The most recent Vianta Arts exhibition features twelve of our favorite local artists who have prepared 'mini exhibitions' of four 12" x 12" pieces. It will be an 'off the wall' show so if you see something that you'd like to buy for someone as a Christmas present, or if you have guests that want to take their souvenir with them, the piece can be taken down and will be replaced. Maybe, by the end of the show it will be a completely different show to the one that will be officially opened at 6.00pm this Friday, December 2. And who’s exhibiting? Annie McIntosh, Cholena Drew Hughes, Deann Cumner, Glenis Gray, Ilia Starkovsky, Jim Cox, Judi Parkinson, Kevin Grealy, Michele Deveze, Raquel Manson, Robyn Shaw, Wayne Smith. If you go to Vianta Arts Facebook events page, or just look up Vianta Arts on Facebook, you’ll find a little teaser – a taste of the exhibition. And every few days or so a special about one of the participating artists will be posted on Facebook – so make sure you ‘like’ us so you can find out all about the artists and their work. But for now, make sure you have marked the opening night into your diary. It'll be a great night and a really exciting exhibition – and be aware that the exhibition will continue until January 29. So if you can’t make it to the opening, pop in over the Christmas break and indulge in a great coffee and one of Steve’s tempting treats while enjoying the work of some of the best of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland artists. Don’t forget - keep your eye on our Facebook page for introductions to all of the artists participating in this exhibition. Light refreshments will be served at the opening, and Vianta will be taking orders for a la carte meals from 7:00pm – call Steve at 0412 312 399 to book your table. Vianta Expresso is located in Simpson Street, across from the Tower Green. For information about having an exhibition at Vianta Arts, please email reddoorart@bigpond.com

School News Marvellous Mapleton camp for Mooloolah State School students Term 4 saw the students from Years 5 and 6 at Mooloolah State School head to their annual camp held at the Mapleton QCCC. After a long year of learning, the students were given the chance to let off some steam during the week of November 7 through to 11. “We had a blast of a time,” Mr Lowe (Year 6 teacher) recalls. “It was a fantastic camp with superb food and activities for the students.” Some of the hair-raising activities included the giant swing, flying fox, abseiling and archery. These activities involved an element of trust in yourself and your class mates. The students challenged and pushed each other to overcome their fears. Team work and team building was the aim of the camp and all of the students did exactly that. Students Annie Gurdler and Archer Hiser were “blown away” with the food, swimming pools and accommodation. All the students from Years 5 and 6 had an unforgettable experience and had a wonderful time at the camp. They did not want the camp to end after the great experiences they had. From all the students and staff from Mooloolah State School who attended the camp: Thank you Mapleton QCCC for a marvellous week!

Landsborough’s team with their ‘Rising Stars’ trophy
Rising stars Contributed by Kylie Merola A team of eager Landsborough State School students recently travelled to Grace Lutheran College to participate in the First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Challenge. FLL is an internationally acclaimed program that cultivates coding and robotic skills and stimulates student interest in science, technology, engineering and maths. The students work in teams, with an adult mentor, to design, build and program robots. Their work culminates in this tournament. They are judged on project presentation, teamwork, robot performance, technical design and robot programming. A total of 48 teams competed in this year’s event. After the completion of the tournament, the Landsborough team were announced as winners of the ‘Rising Stars’ trophy. It was a fantastic result for the all-girl team who have given up so many lunch hours to learn robotics. Their teacher and mentor, Ms Rachel Wise, is extremely proud of their efforts. Ms Wise explained, “Landsborough State School’s robotics and coding programs are gathering momentum and will continue to expand. The school P&C recently donated over $7,000 which has enabled us to purchase a wide variety of digital technology resources. This will create opportunities for all Landsborough students to extend their skills in the area of digital technologies. It’s fun and exciting for students and they are learning skills that will last a lifetime.”

Have you considered Family Daycare? Jane Pemberton owns and operates ‘Open Arms Family Daycare’ from her home in Glass House Mountains. Following on from many years experience of working as an educator in childhood centres, earlier this year Jane decided to open her home and offer early childhood care in a more informal environment. Jane has a Diploma in Childhood Services and runs her business through an affiliation
with ‘Kath Dickson Family Daycare’. Parents who use her services have full access to CCB and CCR government benefits and rebates. “I love working with children and I’ve found that working in my own home with a maximum of four children during the day at a time means that I can give so much more time to them,” says Jane. “Families may be surprised at how affordable family day care can be.” Currently Jane offers long day care services five days a week and can care for children from six weeks old. She also hopes to be able to offer weekend services down the track. For more details contact Jane on 0450 608 441 or email jane.openarms.fds@gmail.com

Thanks to the generosity of the Maleny Apex Committee, the Beerwah Kindergarten children will have a lot more titles to choose from. The kindy library at the Beerwah Kindergarten received a healthy boost thanks to a $500.00 donation, which was used to buy a host of new titles, including books featuring some of the latest characters by well-loved authors. Beerwah Kindy president Emma Brown said the donation was important as the books will help to boost language skills, logical thinking and build the foundations of literacy. “Books also help the children to adapt in different situations, so the benefits of being read to, or reading to oneself, are endless,” she said.
Fun with Mooloolah Valley Playgroup Come along to the Mooloolah Valley Playgroup Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 7, from 9.30am to 11.00am at Martin Rungert Park, Mooloolah. Livin’ the dream!
Business feature Dan Rogers has often dreamt of owning his own business and having the opportunity to work for himself. His current roster of work involves working away for three weeks at a time with only one week off. However, by recently starting his own small business, reselling the Transportable Shade Sheds range of products he can now go on that holiday he always wanted, make extra money and have a better life, working as much or as little as he wants. These are just some of the advantages of owning his own small business – as the boss he can fit it in around his own life choices. Dan lives in Millicent which is around 50km from Mount Gambia in South Australia. A few months ago with the support of his family he accomplished his long held ambition to become a small business owner. With the opportunity provided by Saver6.com and Shade Sheds, it couldn’t have been easier. A mechanical fitter by trade he currently works long hours in a lead smelter located over 600kms away. While working for others has been fine, the nature of the industry means that ongoing work is not always guaranteed. By becoming a Saver6.com small business owner, Dan is looking ahead to future proof his income and take his life to the next level. “I’m looking at options for financial security by becoming a reseller – plus I’ve always wanted to work for myself. With the Transportable Shade Shed products I can access potential sales in a variety of markets in my area. While I hope to have this as my fulltime commitment – I can have this business to fit around my other work,” explains Dan. With the security of additional revenue options no matter what his current work prospects, Dan is excited about the variety of markets he can approach. Fishing is a huge industry along the coast near where he lives. With numerous amateur and professional fishermen and women flocking to the popular holiday towns – Dan sees huge market potential is selling the adaptable and weather proof products to this industry. Surrounded by national parks, another viable option is the opportunity to sell the multipurpose products to local councils – with self-composting toilets, Australian Standards compliant Dangerous Goods storage units and recreational park coverings all serviced by the Transportable Shade Shed range of products. Being a regional area, farming and agricultural industry also has huge sales potential. By becoming a Saver6.com business owner, Dan also has access to a supportive and collaborative online networking platform that ‘steps outside of the box’, and encourages entrepreneurship and innovation while encouraging opportunities for increased growth and profit. It is a business platform that effectively stays up to date with the changing nature of modern business by building on business owners’ strengths while offering the advantages of direct target marketing, mentoring and motivation to achieve their goals. So, should Dan decide to live the life he has always dreamed of, his business can continue to be marketed and leads generated from others working on his behalf behind the scenes. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Millicent area please contact Dan on 0427 024 082. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
Contributed by Helen Skerman, Industry Liaison Officer School based traineeships and apprenticeships give students the opportunity to combine training with working in a real job, gain QCE points while learning the practical workplace skills, and continue full time school studies while earning a part time wage. During 2016, there have been approximately 40 Beerwah High students participating in SATs. Students have balanced their school studies with training and work in their chosen industry. Most students attend work release on their non-timetabled day. Traineeships are completed over the two years of senior schooling and on graduation trainees have gained a Certificate III qualification. Apprentices participate part time over senior and on graduation usually convert to full time second year apprentices having completed approximately a third of their studies. Training is competency based with an emphasis on work place application of attained knowledge. We have trainees in hospitality, retail operations, business, information, digital media and technology, sport and recreation, community pharmacy and automotive mechanics. Our apprentices work in the industries of hairdressing, plumbing, roof plumbing, electro technology, bricklaying, cabinet making, civil construction, automotive electrical technology and painting and decorating. Students are employed by businesses in our local area and across the Sunshine Coast. Beerwah High appreciates and thanks these businesses for creating these employment opportunities and for their continuing support of alternative pathways for our young people. There are many benefits for school based trainees and apprentices, making SATs highly sought after arrangements. Students are able to undertake training in a qualification whilst completing the Queensland Certificate of Education with the qualification giving QCE points. Students are earning while learning, participating in valuable work experience and gaining real world skills. SATs can lead students into further study or can kick start a career. We see students developing their confidence, self-esteem and maturity as they progress through their traineeship or apprenticeship. There have been fantastic outcomes for our 2016 graduating trainees and apprentices with school based apprentices employed in part time and full time positions. Our school based trainees have completed their qualifications and are now ready to embark on the next stage of further study or work. Every year at Beerwah High’s annual award night we recognise a school based trainee or apprentice who has effectively developed workplace skills, knowledge and confidence in their chosen industry. The 2016 recipient of Trainee/Apprentice of the year is Year 12 student Yvan Slore. Yvan has been employed as a school based apprentice Painter and Decorator since May 2014 and has successfully balanced two work release days each week, qualification studies and school subject commitments. Yvan’s employer, Ruben from Assured Finish Painting Services states that Yvan has become an indispensable member of their team and is a diligent, hardworking young man who they are happy to take on as a full time apprentice after graduation. Congratulations to Yvan and to all our trainees and apprentices on a successful and rewarding 2016

Out & About Glenview State School shines at Evening of the Arts
The fourth Annual 'Evening of the Arts' at Glenview State School did not disappoint last week, with 200 members of our school community turning out to celebrate the artistic efforts of our students. Around 85 students performed in choirs and dance troupes, in the band and in solo items to a very receptive (and at times vocal) crowd of supporting mums, dads and family friends. For a school of only 200, the music teacher Mrs Chelsea Harry is allowed to boast about their achievements. "Nearly half of all our students either learn an instrument or sing in the school choirs; something we are totally proud of!" she said. "Numbers are growing every year and we now employ four instrumental teachers to cope with the load." The award-winning Senior and Junior Dance Troupes brought down the house with effervescent performances and students of all ages performed in the Cheerleading Squad and
they tumbled and turned and somehow managed to fit 30 cartwheels into a two-minute show! Parents were blessed by the angelic voices of the Junior Choir who sang the Louis Armstrong favourite ‘What a Wonderful World' and the 40 strong Senior Choir ended the evening with a flash-mob style showstopper of the song 'Keep Your Head Up' by Andy Grammer. The School Band performed along with guitar groups who were decked out with electric guitars. There were piano soloists, string quintets and vocal duets to boot, and they all impressed, inspired and stunned the community with their confidence and performance prowess. Glenview State School is proud to have so many students who love to sing, dance and play instruments. It's a true testament to a supportive principal and passionate teachers like Mrs Harry and Mrs Melanie Osborne who give up countless lunch hours to train students in the Arts.

Peachester P&C ask the hard questions The Community Trivia Night at The Peachester Hall hosted by Peachester School P&C was a great success. The quest for the best brought together a great mix of the community for a night of fun and laughter. Many thanks must go to Jeannie Thorne and Tom Richter for co-ordinating the tricky questions and Ukele entertainment, Peter Turner for his excellent ‘games show’ hosting, and special thanks to Fiona Gray and Margie Jennings and their team of helpers for making it all happen. Funds raised will go towards upgrading the school’s senior playground equipment and funding the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.

Things To Do Singing for the homeless The needy in our community will benefit from a Charity Concert in Buderim on Saturday, December 3. The popular Buderim Male Choir will be supporting a fund created by the Salvation Army to bring some cheer to the homeless this Christmas. The Choir will perform at St. Mark’s Anglican Church and present a program – ‘Songs we Love to Sing’. Special Guest Artists at the concert will include “Sax Appeals”, a saxophone quartet, led by local musician Barry Rodgers. Other invited artists include pianist Helen Porter and soloist Juanita van Wyk. The concert will commence at 2.00pm. Admission is $15.00 for adults, children are free and afternoon tea is included. A group booking (10 plus) for $12.00 per person may be reserved by phoning Rod on 5456 4473.
Ho Ho Ho!
Christmas is coming to Aussie World a little bit early on Friday, December 23. On this special night, Aussie World will be transformed into a Christmas Wonderland for one of the best family Christmas events on the Sunshine Coast. For just $25 per person (or $20.00 as part of a Family of 5) you can enjoy all of Aussie World's rides by night and all the Christmas cheer under the stars. Visit Santa's village where you can meet Santa and his helpers, watch the Frosty and Gingerbread Man Show, meet the Aussie Kids and visit the Night before Christmas House. There's also snow, giant presents and a beautiful nativity scene! The fun starts at 6.00pm as you wander through Santa’s Village, enjoy rides, attractions and festive fun including roving Carollers, Christmas entertainers and more. Don’t miss out – go on line to buy your tickets before the night.
Meryl Streep plays off-key opera star The final Maleny Film Society screening for the year, on this Saturday, December 3, is ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’, a true comedic bio-pic about a New York heiress whose wealth bought her a starring role as an off-key soprano opera diva in Carnegie Hall. Hugh Grant and Meryl Streep both attracted screen awards for their roles as St Clair Bayfield and his wife Florence. Grant is beneficent, charming and entirely convincing, Streep inspired and self-deceiving, in an elegant production from Stephen Frears, the director of ‘Philomena’ and ‘The Queen’. This UK production is set in New York of 1940, when Foster Jenkins dreamed of performing on an opera stage, with less than adequate talent but a little purchased training. Recording studios of the time come to life in this charming comedy of sad commitment. Doors open in the Maleny Community Centre at 6.00pm for a dinner catered by Wild Rocket @ Mistys. The movie starts at 7.15pm, but the warning is: be early! Members’ tickets ($8.00) may be pre-bought online or via the Maleny Information Centre; non-members are welcome to purchase tickets at the door for $13. The bar will be open and there will be a tea/coffee stand with homemade treats.
Will you be decorating your home with Christmas Lights this year? If you are - make sure you send your address to reception@gcnews.com.au – so we can make sure you are included in our Lighting Up Glasshouse Country & Maleny list to appear in the December 14 and 20. This is not a competition just an opportunity to share the joy of your hard work! Check out our Lighting Up Glasshouse Country & Maleny Facebook page for updates and photos

Natural do-it-yourself sprays
A fair while ago I wrote about using garden chemicals safely and suggested some home-made recipes for garden sprays. I’ve been asked to re-print some of them again – so here they are. Spray oil - Make your own pest oil to smother scale, leaf miner and mites, and as a sticking and wetting agent to add to other sprays. 500ml of vegetable oil; ¾ cup of pure liquid soap. Combine them together until mixed. Garlic spray - This spray will deter insects, especially caterpillars, grasshoppers and aphids. 3 crushed cloves of garlic; 1 tablespoon of spray oil; 1 litre of water or milk. Combine the garlic, spray oil and water or milk and leave to soak overnight. Milk spray - Powdery mildew appears as grey or white powder on the new foliage – especially on cucumbers and zucchinis. This disease occurs most frequently when night temperatures drop and humidity remains high. 1 part of milk; 9 parts of water. Spray regularly over the leaves as a preventative treatment. Molasses spray - Great to control caterpillars and as a soil drench to prevent root nematodes in tomatoes and capsicums. Dissolve one tablespoon of molasses and one tablespoon of spray oil into a litre of warm water. Double the concentration for nematodes. Chilli spray - Another good chewing insect repellent. 40 small hot chillies; 2 litres of water; 2 tablespoons of spray oil. Puree the chillies and one litre of water together in a blender. Strain the mixture and add the spray oil and the other litre of water.

LUTHERAN CHURCH
From the churches Christmas is FOR-GIVING
Reed Street, Glass House Mtns
Sunday Worship & Sunday School 9.00am
Pastor Aaron Jackson - Church on the Rise
Christmas is just around the corner and the obvious heightened excitement is in the air. As are the increased stress levels that come with preparing for this yearly event. There are the clear cut decisions that hinge around “who is coming?” and “where are we going?” Christmas we are told, is for giving. And we spend a lot of time and effort to give our best. Much thought has gone into purchasing the perfect gift and making sure no one is left out. But in the rush to tick everything off the list and to maintain the sanity, remember the greatest gift you will receive this Christmas is the one you give. The Bible says it’s more blessed to give, than to receive. One of the reasons for this is whenever we prepare a gift, our thoughts are fixed on the person we are going all out for. This Christmas find ways, in fact I encourage you to create ways, to be generous in your approach to others. As you give of yourself others will be blessed and you will be blessed also. The gift that gives twice isn’t the one that has been regifted and passed on. Rather, it’s the gift that
Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671
has been given and received with joy. God himself gave the very best gift to all humanity and it was the gift of His Son. Jesus Christ came to earth in a miraculous way to show us in an incredible way, the way to life and wholeness. Jesus coming to earth was significant, because through Christ we find forgiveness. Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ came to show us a better way to do life and to discover the freedom that comes through forgiveness. God rich in mercy sent Christ to stand in the gap for us so that we can come to God and submit our lives to His care. You and I matter to God. This Christmas consider Christ and remember Christmas is for-giving.

Saturday, November 26: The 18 Hole Nett Men’s Monthly MPR Medal Competition was played but was interrupted near the end with the thunder storm, about which we will not complain, as we all needed the rain it brought. Contributed by Brenda Briese Thursday, November 24 was our final Ladies Day competition for 2016. On such a dry and rather hot day we had 60 players which was pleasing. The lack of rain has dried the course and there is quite a lot of run. The scores from the day reflect that. We played in two divisions: Div 1 (0-24). Winner was Barb Whitfield with a very creditable nett score of 64. R/Up was Carol Cork with 69 on a count back from two other ladies. Div 2 (25-45). Winner was Josie Thistlethwaite with a nett 67. R/Up was Toni Grant, one of our newer members. All wonderful scores. Nearest the pin shots were as follows: No. 2 Karen Gannon. No. 5 Sue Williamson. No. 16 Lesley Eggleston. And 2nd shot on No. 18 went to Kathy Moffat and Lorraine McCamley, both in the hole. Birdie box was 13th hole and there were two winners, Andrea Campbell and Barb Whitfield. The Ball Rundown went to 73. Thanks to our daily sponsors Mavis Brimelow and Lyn Nichols. Next week is our break-up day with lots of fun, including dress-up! We know how to have fun. All we need now is a few inches of rain! As this the last contribution for 2016, I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe festive season. Beerwah Ladies Golf always welcomes new members, so don't be afraid to join us. Contact the Pro-shop for more information on 5494 6611. See you in 2017.

Mooloolah Swimming Carnival Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State School recently held its annual swimming carnival at the school pool. It was an amazing day of sunshine, with students, parents, staff and swimmers all dressed in their house colours. The day began with a big splash and students took to the pool for the Individual Medley followed by 200m events, 100m events, 50m and 25m events. They participated in relays and helped the younger students with their races. The atmosphere was amazing and the students showed phenomenal team spirit as they cheered on each other and their houses. The day was a remarkable display of true sportsmanship. Rungert House were the overall winners for the day, so well done Rungert students. Among the students were many winners. Some of them will go on to represent the school at districts – and brother and sister, Cooper and Tamsyn Douglas broke records! Winners were: 8yr olds - William Ward and Bonnie Muller. 9yr olds - Ryan Venditti-Bradeley and Scarlett Hopkins. 10yr olds - Cooper Douglas and Alyssa Hayman. 11yr olds - Oliver Gassner

The office bearers for 2017 will be President: Vince Carbery, Vice-President: Sarah Widin, Secretary: Priscilla Vickers and Treasurer: Donna Manning. Our members have played against teenagers and nonagenarians. On Thursday, November 17, we enjoyed the
company of two players from Graceville, Miggy and Peter Mackey, who played doubles with Helen Andrews and Vince. Scores were Miggy and Vince 17, Helen Andrews and Peter 11. Sunday saw Nick Cram 13 defeat Sally Adams and Ken Barker 11. Last Thursday Nick Cram played Frances Harper and Sally Adams, winning 15 - 9. The Money Board winners were Neil Stenhouse and Bryan Fripp and the Mystery Prize winner was Margaret Ginns. Friday’s Scroungers Winners were Steve Lawrence, Ian Hansen and Relma Godfrey. None of the Sponsors’ Prize winners were present to claim their winnings and the Money Board went to Allan Cook. This week is a busy one which kicked off yesterday with the Monthly Jackpot Pairs. Tuesday there is Jackpot Pairs/Triples and Wednesday evening is the Twilight Challenge. Because of the Christmas Party and Presentation Night Friday evening there aren’t any Scroungers Friday afternoon, but feel free to come down and have a social roll-up. Finally – the Club will open Sunday afternoons from 3.00pm on a trial basis starting this Sunday, December 4.

Just for Laughs Great outdoors
Grandpa John was celebrating his 100th birthday and everybody complimented him on how athletic and well-preserved he appeared. "Gentlemen, I will tell you the secret of my success," he cackled. "I have been in the open air day after day for some 75 years now." The celebrants were impressed and asked how he managed to keep up his rigorous fitness regime. “Well, you see my wife and I were married 75 years ago. On our wedding night, we made a solemn pledge. Whenever we had a fight, the one who was proved wrong would go outside and take a walk."
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Brotherly love
Mary was having a tough day and had stretched herself out on the couch to do a bit of what she thought to be well-deserved complaining and selfpitying. She moaned to her mom and brother, "Nobody loves me ... the whole world hates me!" Her brother, busily occupied playing a game, hardly looked up at her and passed on this encouraging word: "That's not true, Mary. Some people don't even know you." Dave from Glass House Mountains

ARIES 21 March - 20 April This is your best time for using your head in business dealings. Attend to research and confidential negotiations as they should go well. Make your mind up about a goal, write it down and you can expect that the New Moon in Capricorn boosts and supports your ambitions. Discipline and intuition can combine to foster success for you. TAURUS 21 April – 22 May Solid ideas are available this week under the New Moon in Capricorn over the weekend. Write your plans down about travel, education, and how to be more efficient. You must remember of course that under Mercury, still being retrograde, it will not clear you for action until mid January. Clean up unfinished tasks around the home. GEMINI 23 May - 21 June Thinking and reflexes are fast and quick this week and it could mean a temporary change of locale. The New Moon in Capricorn pours down upon you, providing disciplined common sense energy into your cash resources. This means you may have leverage for benefitting from your assets. The planets activate your dreams and aspirations now. CANCER 22 June - 22 July This New Moon week in the sign of Capricorn indicates a sudden, exciting or surprise change, perhaps a relocation. All that feels right for your life’s direction. An ambitious decision by a partner may show you the way to success. Put it all into action quickly. You will feel more inclined to trust in your goals after mid-January next year.
LEO 23 July – 22 August Make an effort this week to turn down conflicts with loved ones, especially parents. This is because the New Moon comes into the sign of Capricorn and that activates the sector of everyone’s chart regarding their mother and father. So this New Moon week advises combining discipline and intuition to foster success for all your tasks. VIRGO 23 August – 22 September You have a very nice compatible sign with the New Moon on November 30, being in the sign of Virgo. This brings to you compassion, faith and forgiveness when needed. If there are jobs or errands to attend to then this New Moon gives you the ability to get all things done. Restart some goals you hope for by mid January. LIBRA 23 September - 22 October There are three Venus aspects and other planets that help make this holiday month one to cherish. Under the New Moon in Capricorn the emphasis is in your communications so express your love and creatively and do whatever gives pleasure. There are probably some fundamental changes and improvements to your domestic life. SCORPIO 23 October - 22 November Under the disciplined energy of the New Moon in Capricorn the ending of November is all about money, whether it means banking, paperwork, or tax returns. New ideas and information will help you form an idea and take quick action to make it happen. Double check your paper work during the first week of 2017 with Mercury retrograde.

Week beginning 30/11/2016 SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 22 December This New Moon week encourages all fresh starts particularly in career and refinancing. Just keep all in the planning changes until the second week in January. This is because Mercury, being retrograde, means that we have to go over old ground and correct minor errors. The weekend sets the tone for forward looking and social interactions. CAPRICORN 23 December - 19 January If you are still trying to move things forward you will find it a lot better after mid-January since Mercury is retrograde and causing minor inconveniences with appointments and delays. There will probably be some adjustments if you are gathering for a party or family group. The New Moon in your sign says it is a good time to make a wish list for the coming year! AQUARIUS 20 January - 19 February Enjoy sharing social activities that broaden your interests and perspectives. Some friends may be overzealous, however their enthusiasm is positively infectious! You enjoy discussions and gain useful ideas on the state of the economy and your personal finances. They may need some work before mid January. A hunch pays off well now. PISCES 20 February - 20 March The New Moon in Capricorn is extremely helpful if you want to plant fresh seeds for future friendships and social connections. Some of your friends alter their business direction under Mercury retrograde and then again change their minds back again. You prefer to “nest-in” at the New Year and have a quiet, untroubled passage for the changeover.
