Hi Everyone
W
ow, what a busy week the last one has been! On Monday night, it was the launch of the Rotary Calendar at the Beerwah Hotel. This year’s calendar once again captures some spectacular local images – and celebrates its 10th year. Congratulations to the Rotary team who make it happen each year. On Thursday, it was a special day at Australia Zoo when their tiger cubs were introduced to their new enclosures. GCNews were there to capture the big moment (along with a bus load of media from the Sunny Coast and Brisbane). It was the closest thing I have been to a ‘Red Carpet’ event, but I guess these little fellas are clearly celebrity animals. On Saturday afternoon I was at Glass House helping out the

Tiger cubs now on display Last week marked the official unveiling of Australia Zoo's brand new tiger cub enclosure, where their two eight-week-old male Sumatran tiger cubs (nicknamed spot and stripe by the staff) will be on display from 10.00am – 2.00pm daily until December 14. On the day, Tiger Den Supervisor Giles Clark (who has been working at Australia Zoo for 10 years in December) spoke passionately about the importance of the two gorgeous tiger cubs and the importance they will play in the world’s captive breeding program.
They will also play a huge role at the Zoo, promoting the importance of conservation and education and are great ambassadors for raising much-needed funds for tiger conservation projects and awareness for tigers in the wild. “There are approximately 3,200 tigers remaining in the wild. It is predicted that tigers in the wild could become extinct by 2020 if nothing is done,” Giles said. Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors, the charity set up in 2002, has donated over $1.3 million towards in-situ tiger conservation. “But we can’t stop there. We still need to raise awareness and funds to save these beautiful creatures,” Giles said. The wildlife warriors have also launched the Tiger 511 donation appeal. Just $5.00 can help save one tiger in the wild for one day! To find out more head to www.wildlifewarriors.org.au, find the Tiger 511 ‘Donate Now’ button to make an easy, online contribution. Or if you fancy the opportunity to get up close to one of the cubs, the zoo is now offering exclusive ‘Tiger Cubs Animal Encounters’ which you can book on line before you head off to the Zoo.

Federal Member for Fisher Mal Brough has welcomed the interest of Glasshouse Country RSL sub-branches and primary schools in a program to commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since Australia’s involvement in the First World War 1914 - 1918. Mr Brough said his electorate has been allocated a pool of $125,000 to support projects that honoured the Centenary. “Beerwah-Peachester and Glasshouse Country RSL Clubs have seized on the initiative and I encourage other community groups to do the same,” Mr Brough said. As part of this initiative Mr Brough recently met with the principals of the local schools and representatives from the local RSL Sub-branches to identify ways they could work collaboratively.

Treasures required for Garage Sale
Planning is underway for a massive fundraising garage sale to be held on November 9 as a fundraiser at Landsborough. The event is being organised by Kristy Christopher to raise funds to assist with installing a pool for hydrotherapy for her baby niece Zahlia who suffers from a very rare condition called Aicardi Syndrome. Kristy is putting the word out for locals who would be happy to donate items small and large that are suitable for a garage sale. They currently have a drop off point in Landsborough and Mooloolah and are happy to pick up in other areas. If you have items to donate, give Kristy a call on 0429 340 490. Check out the ad in the garage sale section next week in GCNews for dates and times. To find out more about the cause, check out www.zealforzahlia or check out the Facebook page.

Mooloolah River – coast's best Mooloolah River is healthier than last year and is in as good a condition as the Noosa River catchment, according to the 2013 Healthy Waterways Ecosystem Health Report Card. Coordinated by the non-government not-for-profit organisation – Healthy waterways – the report card process has been operating for around 15 years. It provides a snapshot of the ecological health of waterways by ranking them on a scale of A to F. This year, the Mooloolah Catchment was the most improved freshwater catchments in south-east Queensland, with the catchment as a whole moving from rating of C up to B+. This is in contrast to most other Sunshine Coast catchments dropping in their ecological health rating. A very large part of this great result must be given to all the hard work that the Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRWL) group foster throughout the catchment. Their projects, in cooperation with local landholders, schools, other community groups and the Sunshine Coast Council, have paid dividends for the health of the Mooloolah River. Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare coordinator Jan Kesby is delighted but not surprised by the results. “We’ve always said that long-term community cooperation and positive action, together with changes to community attitudes towards the value of waterways, is the only way we can ensure the sustainability of our catchments,” Jan said.
“We’re proud to have been the leaders in the Mooloolah region for catchment protection and improvement – but we couldn’t do it without our staff, volunteers, and landholder and community partners.” Some of the projects that the MRWL have worked on include: • Mooloolah River riparian restoration program $700,000 invested over the last three years and more than 35,000 trees planted plus improved management of local properties; • Sunshine Coast Farmflow project for improved land management in rural catchments • Landslip mitigation trials - trialling methods to minimise landslips in the Mooloolah River headwaters • Caring for Country project, which assisted landholders to fence off their streams and provide offstream watering and fencing off the river • Frog monitoring and water quality monitoring • School education projects throughout the region • As well as a range of small landowner projects throughout Mooloolah valley.
Local groups awarded funding
At a recent Sunshine Coast Council meeting, $275,000 of community project grants was approved. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said council’s grant and funding programs helped foster sustainable and diverse communities across the region. “We have such a vast range of community organisations on the Sunshine Coast and this diverse group of recipients reflects that,” Cr McKay said. “This diversity highlights the benefit of council’s grants programs to the wider Coast community and is also testament to the fantastic work that these groups do.” Cr McKay said funding for festive season activities was a highlight of the grants. “Council is helping groups right across the region to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve in their own ways,” she said. Local groups receiving funding were: Glasshouse Country Community Carols by Candlelight - $5,000 Glasshouse & Hinterland Australian Rules Football Club Inc., field drainage works – football / cricket field - $4,000 Sunshine Coast Radio Control Car Club, track upgrade - $7,500 Unfortunately, local projects Council decided not to fund included a Beerwah Street Stories project ($14,870) and the Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club ($7,500). Applications for council’s Community Grants Program will next open in January.

Sore neck and shoulders?
Are your sore neck and shoulders making life less enjoyable? Does sitting at the computer, driving, or even reading a book cause a burning discomfort in your shoulders that spreads up into the base of your skull? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation and poor posture – 2 common problems that chiropractic care is very effective in relieving. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. This occurs when the spine loses normal motion and/or position, and can cause wear and tear on the discs, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues. Subluxation can also have an affect on the nerves exiting the spine – leading to even more issues of pain and poor health. Today’s lifestyle encourages us to fall into ‘forward head posture’ - where our head sits in front of our shoulders – rather than in line with the shoulders as it should. This forward posture has a significant impact on your health and your appearance and if left unaddressed, tends to get worse as you get older. Researchers agree that for every 2.5cm of forward head posture there is an equivalent increase of 4.5kg of stress on the neck. It’s no wonder poor posture is such a pain! Poor posture and Spinal Subluxation often result in back aches, neck pain, jaw pain, loss of lung capacity, gastrointestinal problems, pre-disposition to arm, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries and the list goes on. Fortunately, we can help! Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your discomfort. Crime Statistics There were 13 burglaries of homes / business premises in the past month of which three have been solved. There were also 12 vehicles that were entered and properties either stolen or removed of which two have been solved. The majority of the vehicles entered occurred at the numerous tourist car parks such as Wild Horse Mountain, Mt Tibrogargan and Ngungun. Leaving items such as laptops or mobile phones within plain view inside vehicles is still occurring and this only provides offenders with more motivation to commit crime. Over the past months, there have been a number of similar offences that have occurred in not only the Beerwah and Landsborough divisions but also Maleny and Nambour. I am pleased to report that due to intelligence gathered that a male person was arrested for in excess of 90 charges relating to burglary, unlawful entry of motor vehicle, stealing, fraud and drug charges that had occurred in those divisions. Drink Driving For the last month there were six offences relating to drink driving. This compares to a total of 10 offences for the previous time last year. The highest reading for the month was .194 – nearly four times the legal limit. Be thankful that this driver did not kill themselves or any other person. There were also four samples taken from drivers in respect of drug driving. These samples are currently being analysed and the drivers will be advised in due course as to these results. Repugnant Offence There has been over recent months a very disturbing offence that has been occurring at the Glass House Mountains public toilets. An obviously sick or mentally disturbed reprobate has been smearing faeces all over the walls after it has been meticulously cleaned by the hard working contractors. This does nothing to assist the tourism for this area and is quite upsetting for not only the public who utilise these facilities but also the cleaning contractors who have to return and clean up this disgusting mess. If any person has information that will assist Police in identifying who this is please contact the Beerwah Station on 5436 5222 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 333. Until next month keep safe and lock up.

Visitor Information Centre Update Sunshine Coast Destinations Limited (who are charged with operating this vitally important element of our local tourism industry) has rationalised their staffing arrangements and reorganised how their volunteers operate the centres. However it would seem from the number of letters from local residents and the following response from Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski that there are concerns about how it will impact on the furture of the centres. Cr Baberowski said he shares many of the community's concerns about the recent decision by Sunshine Coast Destinations Ltd to make the managers of its visitor information centres redundant, including the Glass House Mountains VIC, and replace them with roving coordinators. "I am especially frustrated that despite council being the company's major stakeholder, the councillors were not consulted and I was not briefed until after the decision had been announced. I am pursuing how this happened," he said. "Now that the decision has been made, my top priorities are making sure that the new model will deliver the level of service needed and that the volunteers are properly supported. I am meeting with the CEO of SCDL and council staff to further raise my concerns. "I have also suggested that SCDL meets again with the volunteers as soon as possible, as it is the volunteers who keep the centres alive and they need to be respected and better kept in the loop," he said. Sunshine Coast Destinations Limited have now appointed their two Ambassador (or Volunteer) Coordinators for the SCDL Visitor Information Centres. Bev Dooley and Emily Lund, will be
working in conjunction with Holly Horder, said SCDL CEO Simon Ambrose. “SCDL is seeking volunteers for our Glass House Mountains, Montville and Maroochydore Visitor Information Centres," he said. “Information Centres operate seven days a week and shifts range from three to three and a half hours.” If you require more information about our Visitor Information Centres or are interested in becoming a volunteer, please email Holly at Holly@scdl. com.au or call 5458 8825.
Do you know: • How many mountains there are in the Glass House group, and how many there are within the Glasshouse Country region? • What ‘Chibur Kakun’ (the indigenous name for Tibrogargan) means? • The name of the explorer who led the group that were our first overnight campers (and the name of his cat)? Are you interested – would you like to find out much more about our local area? You can, if you have a half day a month to spare to join the dedicated group of volunteers who provide satisfaction and fulfilment to thousands of local, interstate and international tourists and visitors each year. You will be paired with an experienced volunteer on a rostered shift (three to four hours) and operate in a modern air-conditioned environment. Be aware – as a result you may develop a passion to learn more about the history of our iconic mountain landscapes – but you won’t be sorry. If you’d like to know more about becoming a volunteer before formally contacting Sunshine Coast Destinations, come down and speak with one of them at the Glass House Mountains centre or contact Ivon Northgate on 5496 9974.

Community News Beerburrum Soldiers Settlement Community Day The ‘Adopt-a-digger’ program is inviting everybody with an interest in the history of Beerburrum and the WW1 Soldier Settlement to attend a workshop on November 23 to be held at the Beerburrum School of Arts Hall from 9.30am.
Bushfires - Be Aware Keep your eye on the fire danger sign outside Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club - the current rating is...
HIGH. Fires can be controlled but loss of life and damage to property is still a threat. What to do – ensure that you, your family and property are prepared for the risk of bushfire. Monitor the situation for any changes.
On the day, there will be presentations on various aspects of the Soldier Settlement as well as on the soldiers who lived there. Project co-ordinator Chrissie Fletcher said people whose ancestors lived on the Settlement are encouraged to share any stories, photos or memorabilia they might have. Our intention is to foster a greater interest in the Settlement amongst the local community in the lead up to the WW1 Centenary, she said. Of course, any researchers who have adopted Beerburrum settlers will find this a particularly informative day. Following the meeting, there will be a visit to the Beerburrum Cemetery. Morning tea is supplied, however you will need to bring your own lunch, and a gold coin donation would be appreciated on the day. If you would like to find out more, check out their website www.adoptadigger.org or to attend please RSVP beerburrum@adoptadigger.org The hall is located at 7 Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum.

Leanda said since we started setting up the shop, we’ve been spreading the word and getting people to express an interest in doing classes, and the response has been great. There are quite a few people who have never been to any classes at all, but are looking forward to discovering the benefits that it will bring to their lives. Wednesday class is most suitable for beginners and those that have experienced some form of yoga in the past and wish to reacquaint themselves with the basics of yoga. Leanda suggests that they should then come along for three or four classes before transferring into
Business feature the general class which covers the complete range of experience and skill level. For Leanda, yoga is an integral part of how she lives her life. She has been doing it for the past 12 years and her passion led her to travel to India to train in the Hatha Yoga approach. Leanda found that living in India while she trained, allowed her to gain a complete understanding of the authentic, underlying aspects of this form of yoga. She describes yoga as a discipline to connect your mind and body with your inner self through movement, breath and mediation. Yoga is a great way to release the day-to-day levels of stress and help live a more peaceful life. Dress code is casual and comfortable, which means it is up to you what you are comfortable in - if that is gym gear or a pair of lose flowing pants and a shirt then that’s great. The cost of the classes are $12.00, but if you become a Healthy Guru member (which is free) you will pay only $9.00 for each class.
If there is enough interest for a morning class, Leanda will look at introducing one. Call, email or visit Leanda if you would like to bring some inner-peace to your life, phone 5439 0097, email thehealthyguru8888@gmail. com or call into the shop.

Contributed by Kylie Gillespe Mooloolah Community has again got a community venue to cool down, swim laps, learn to swim or just splash about! The Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA) was recently awarded a license by Education Queensland to provide community access to the local school pool outside of scheduled school swimming time. Council’s support for provision of the service has also helped make it all possible. The Community Association team showed commitment, persistence, creativity and tenacity in its’ campaign to make sure the pool that locals helped to build many years ago, on school land with council financial support, can continue to be used by the community. Andrew Cowan and Georgina Taylor of Cowan Taylor Aquatics are managing the pool operations, and their Open Day on October 12 was a huge success with a steady stream of locals turning out to show support! Mooloolah’s pool managers are both qualified, passionate swim coaches and instructors, and champions in their own right. Andrew has
represented Australia in swimming and Georgina has represented Queensland and Australia in water polo! Andrew also holds a USC Science Degree in Sport and Exercise Science, so understands the science behind health, exercise and fitness programs. They have Learn to Swim classes and Squad groups that cater to all abilities and needs. Details, together with contact numbers, entry hours and rates can be found on the Swim Mooloolah Facebook page that the MVCA launched to keep the locals informed and interested throughout the long-run campaign. It now continues to keep everyone updated with pool activities and events. The Association is now seeking interested parents to help create a fun, social swim club to challenge our young local swimmers at weekly swim meets and monthly district swim-offs. Check it out on the Facebook page. There could be some future swim champions right here in Mooloolah!

Contributed by Jenny Morris Glasshouse Country View Club Our guest speaker for our October luncheon was Ashley Joel, 27, a former Learning For Life student. She was a delightful, honest, forthright and funny speaker. She is now a fully qualified CPA account with mining companies for the last four years on a fly in fly out basis. She and her older sister, born in West Australia, were both sponsored by the Smith Family since Year 10 through to university degree completion. Ashley’s sister has a degree in psychology and has worked as a mentor for the Smith Family for the last four years.

Lucky door, raffle and stall on display. Bring a thermos and cake for the barbecue please which will be at Glasshouse lookout. Tuesday, November 26 - games day. Wednesday, November 27 - Caboolture Sports Club, morning tea, drinks, entertainment, raffles and lunch. The entertainers will be Greg and Laura Doolan. Members and friends who wish to go are to arrange their own transport. Tuesday, December 10 - Christmas luncheon. They are both a credit to the Smith Family program of sponsorship and mentoring, and to their single parent mother. After listening to Ashley’s journey, it makes our sponsorship of three students each year worthwhile. A good day was had by all, with a lovely lunch prepared by the new chef at the Glasshouse Sports Club. Our next outing is our Melbourne Cup Luncheon at Pauline’s house. If you wish to attend this fun day please phone Elaine on 5493 3935. Just a reminder that all positions on the Committee need to be filled before the AGM so please give it some thought to help out in some way to keep this club going. We are doing some good for the community by supporting the Smith Family. View Clubs support the Smith Family in many ways by helping disadvantaged Australian children with their education. Be ready for even more cash to be pulled out of your wallet! Please don’t think that your recently received higher power bill will stop there. Next quarter you will get an even bigger increase. This is because your current bill includes some charges at the old ‘frozen’ rate, and some at the new much higher rate (about 20% higher). Next quarter the whole bill will be at the new higher rate, so watch out! The solar industry in Queensland is now taking off again, with home owners and business owners anxious to take some control of their lives regarding these never-ending power price rises.
Small solar system – big reduction to your bill A small solar system will make a big difference to your power bill. If any of these apply to you – you have a swimming pool, you are home during the day, you have more than one refrigerator or freezer, or you have irrigation or agitating pumps operating. Most of these electrical requirements can be operated for free with your own solar system. Ask any of your local solar electricians how an expenditure of about $3,700.00 can save you approximately $781.00 (and very likely a saving of up to $883.00 or even more) on your power bill.
Business feature Advanced Electrical & Data Solutions – locals supporting locals Advanced Electrical & Data Solutions is a small family company that is operated by Steve and Tina Pocock. “The prime goal of our company is not just to satisfy, but to delight our customers with friendly service, excellent workmanship and the right solution for any Electrical, Solar or Air Conditioning sales and installation requirement,” said Steve. “During our time in Glass House we have developed a close working relationship with the team at 1300 4 Solar. “Ian and Judy, and Donna, make a great team with over two decades of experience in the Solar industry so they can answer any questions you may have. The countdown has started and students at Glenview State School are joining school children across Australia warming up their vocal chords to take part in ‘Music: Count Us In’, Australia’s largest school music advocacy and participation program, which was established in 2007. This year it will be held on Thursday, October 31 at 12.30pm (11.30am on the Sunshine Coast) when over half a million school students across Australia, from Prep to Year 12, will sing the same song at the same time. The song that will stop the nation this year has a great pedigree. Titled ‘Keep On’, the song

was penned by four talented students who were mentored by singer songwriter Katie Noonan, who says: “I am a big believer in music in education. Music was an important part of my life while I was growing up so I'm really excited to be involved in mentoring students as part of ‘Music: Count Us In this year’”. ‘Keep On’ has been produced by awardwinning producer and ‘Music: Count Us In’ Ambassador John Foreman and recorded by ‘The Voice’ runner-up Darren Percival, with students providing backing vocals and musical accompaniment.
Wow! Mooloolah Kids make a difference! The spirit and excitement of Christmas kicked off early last week at Mooloolah State School! Operation Christmas Child was ‘wrapped up’ and Radio 106five FM broadcast live from the school on Thursday from 12.00noon until 3.00pm, to celebrate and congratulate the students for their huge effort. A record 120 Christmas shoeboxes were wrapped and packed full of special gifts for some very special children in remote areas of PNG and Australia. Students, teachers and parents were interviewed live on air, and talked about the great school spirit, environment of caring, and generous effort that went into Operation Christmas Child 2013.

Coordinated for the third year in a row through the school RI program, this project engaged the children and community in sharing and caring for others, and demonstrated that kids can really make a difference. Students, families and local businesses proved that the gift of giving is still very much alive and well, as last year’s total of 88 boxes was easily surpassed. Mooloolah State School and the RI program coordinators wish to send a huge thank-you to all the students, parents, teachers, and local businesses that generously helped; and to Radio 106five FM for joining them in their celebration.

with almost 30 years experience, 10 of those being co-owner of Top Gun Panel & Paint in Beerwah from 2000 - 2010. Utilising all these previous skills, Mick and Lauren can offer a wide range of services, from a basic car wash, to a complete makeover including buffing, polishing, shampooing or engine bay detailing. Mick can also supply and fit accessories including bull bars, towbars, roof racks or side steps etc. Broken or worn items such as handles, mirrors, moulds and lights are no problem as Unique Auto Care can source new or used parts to suit any vehicle. If your car requires window tinting, Mick and Lauren can arrange a tint to suit your needs and if your plastic headlights are discoloured or faded, they can rejuvenate them for a fraction of the cost of new lights.
For many people, the car is their most prized possession. If your car isn’t well maintained, this can be reflected in its value at the time of sale or trade. First impressions count, so why not give yourself every chance of getting top dollar by allowing Unique Auto Care to help you make the sale. Having lived at Glass House for more than 10 years, they feel that being locals ensures they will maintain the high standards that local people expect and deserve. The Christmas festive season is all about getting together with family and friends and sharing each other’s company, as well as preparing and eating some fabulous food. The historic origins of the ‘Christmas feast’ are uncertain. Some say the feasting may have been adapted from a pagan ceremony to the ‘Unconquered Sun-God’ which was celebrated on the winter solstice in Rome. Other historians contend the Latin Church selected December 25 for the Nativity as the Christian counterpart to the Roman Festival of Saturnalia. Saturnalia involved feasting as celebration of the abundance after the harvest, which in Rome, occurred in December. It has been speculated that the early Christians may have tailored these festival feasts to honour the birth of Jesus. Many countries around the world have developed their own unique Christmas eating traditions. In Germany, there is a tradition of serving a boar’s head, symbolising the well-being of livestock. Today, this has been replaced by roast pork.

In England, Christmas feasting has gone in and out of fashion depending on who sat on the throne. In the 13th century King Henry III had 600 oxen killed and prepared for a single feast, and established the custom of giving food to the needy. The modern traditional English Christmas dinner was popular with Queen Victoria, and has been emulated by British (and Australian) families ever since. In Poland, the Christmas Eve meal has 13 courses – one for Christ and one for each of the Apostles. In the Czech Republic, Christmas dinner consists of carp, pudding, and fruit stew. In Central and South America, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are celebrated with picnics and bullfights. Many people find the thought of preparing Christmas dinner terrifying, or a complete chore. Don’t let this frazzled, exhausting and ‘over Christmas’ mania get to you this year. The best way to approach the Christmas meal – whether it is luncheon or dinner – is to keep it simple! There are many local food, beverage and catering suppliers who can help you take the hassle out of your Christmas preparations.

‘Tis the season to get organised Hi everyone Well I know I am not the most organised person around, and when my sister phoned on the weekend to organise the menu for our family Christmas I think I kindly explained that we had plenty of time to worry about that! However she politely reminded me that with Halloween being tomorrow, and Melbourne Cup next Tuesday, then we will enter the frenzied festive season. So we needed to make clear, sensible decisions now, so we could get what we wanted, and not just end up with a last minute plan. So I am recommending the same message, don’t wait until it is too late to choose the place you would most enjoy eating out at. If it is a nice relaxed lunch with a great view, then you can’t go past the lookout café. At the Glenview Country Resort they have a gorgeous garden setting during both day and night, and at night Santa will also pop in for a visit. Or if you have a bigger group, you might want to check out the Glasshouse Sports Club or the Woodford Bowls Club. The first ever Glasshouse Festival, this Saturday with something for everyone Well it’s only a few days to go until the inaugural Glasshouse Festival and the anticipation about the event is really hotting up. With adult tickets priced at only $50.00 for a full day's entertainment, it isn't surprising that the word has spread throughout the Sunny Coast about this awesome first-time event. Sports Club Manager Kylie Cherry said Festival Organiser Paul Holden has put an amazing range of musical acts and entertainment together for this day / night event making sure there is plenty on offer for families during the day as well as a great musical line-up for the night. “We really want local families to be able to come along with the kids during the day and make sure they all enjoy themselves, that there is a great atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable, safe and relaxed,” Kylie said. Just in case it is a really hot day or there are a few showers, the event has included two massive marquees with covered seating for over 600 people. A perfect spot to take five, and enjoy your lunch and a cold drink, while enjoying some of the live music on offer. The music line-up during the day will be a little more easy listening then the night time program. Check out more detail on page 19.
So that families can get the best value from their tickets they are also offering pass-outs. “The kids can come along during the day, then head off to the grandparents later in the afternoon, so mum and dad can come back and see the headline acts on their own,” said Kylie.
The ‘Wow Balls’ look like plenty of fun “Once you enter the festival site, the entertainment is free – this includes jumping castles for all ages (as well as one for the little ones), some very cool, free electric motorbike rides, plus a pool with ‘WOW’ Balls.” There will also be roaming entertainment, including stilt walking, face painting, clowns and a Hula Hoop Troupe, plus a 16m projection screen with live feeds of all the action all day. “Kite Action and Sunshine Coast SUP centre will be offering free 30 minute Kite Making
Flair Riders Workshops throughout the afternoon, but don’t worry; for those who prefer a little more action, the Flair Riders Freestyle Trials Bike Show and the Xtreme Connect Wake Tramp Demos will be running throughout the day. “I think people will be impressed with the quality of the food – it won’t be your usual fete / sideshow alley style dagwood dogs and fairy floss, it will be restaurant quality meals with generous serving sizes from $5.00 for kids meals and up to $7.50 for adult. Tickets are priced for the whole day: $50.00 for 18 plus, $30.00 for 12 to 17 years, and under 12 free (must be accompanied by an adult). Get your tickets from one of the many local venues featured on the posters, call into the sports club, or head to oztix.com.au to purchase tickets online.

Bands, bands and more bands
Be prepared to experience a great mix of original live music with something for all music tastes. At lunchtime, after Beerwah High’s Spring Burn play their first ever professional performance as the opening act for the day, crowds will enjoy some fantastic live acoustic performances. Lloyd Saunders (Mackay) and his smooth flowing melodies and warm vocals will be followed by the absolutely amazing Juzzie Smith (Byron Bay) playing his very entertaining and very unique ‘one man band’ show featuring slide guitar, harmonica, and didgeridoo.
In the afternoon, there will be three local Sunny Coast acts playing back to back. The Roshambos with their unique and truly well crafted easy going pop sound that has been described as sounding like ‘The Beetles meets Gomez’. Soula with a great original set of Funk and Blues with a bit of Rock thrown in and then some more Funk but with more of a Reggae and Hip pop twist as In2nation take to the stage.
Playing support to the two main acts are local lads Take us To Vegas who are poised to bring their high energy yet melodic and well rounded set to the stage. From reading reviews from previous shows, it won’t be long before the Sunshine Coast locals are playing on the international stage. Fresh from playing support for US rap star Mickey Avalon on his Australian tour, the voice from multi award winning band Butterfingers Evil Eddie will be busting out his very unique brand of melodic Aussie Hip Pop. To finish the night off, headline act 28 Days will be playing their platinum, #1 album Upstyledown from start to finish featuring the hit singles Rip It Up, Stealing Chairs and What's the Deal? An album that has be recognised as one of the best all time Australian releases in the last 10 years.
Early evening we have three Brisbane acts positioned to take it up a notch before the headline acts. Toxic Bears, Crumn and Spitfireliar are all seasoned live acts that bring some great energy to the stage and will warm the crowd up ready for the headline acts.

Promises come cheap
First there was the promise of the upgrade of the railway, then the upgrade of Steve Irwin Way, now traffic lights at Reed Street; promises come cheap Andrew. You are really doing your bit for Glass House Mountains - I don’t think, three out of three. Not a good record, it only confirms what I have already told you, LNP are no better than Labor, please don’t insult us by saying we don’t have any money. Neville Mc Donald Glass House Mountains
Re: story from Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare:
I have read your letter in GCNews edition October 23. When it comes to the environment, both labor, liberal and LNP are 250 years behind the times. They need to change the laws but it suits them both to keep the laws as they are. The people of the hinterland lost 200 hectares of prime forest early this year in the Glass House Mountains. That was used by cyclists, walkers and motor bike riders for the past 15 years; it has a nice canopy over the roadway to protect you from the sun. Not counting the animals that fed off that land. It also had speed bumps two metres high every 10 - 25 metres to let the water run away. It was a great boost for tourism, all lost. Now it’s a waste land for the next 100 years. It’s called harvesting? The politicians can’t touch the National Parks but can destroy the state forest by law? That doesn’t make it right. They give 8.1 million dollars to koala funding and destroy 200 hectares of forest…. oops? Harvesting? We are working with a lot of antique laws from as far back as the 1800s. It’s a pity that the previous government could not control their spending and sold their assets, the pine forest, the timber from the pine forest is sent to Japan, leaving the saw mills to cut our hardwood forests. It’s unfortunate that the politicians don’t take responsibility for their decisions. Remember we had forest from the top of Queensland all along the coast to South Australia. These forests are depleting very fast, the same as our wild life. We used to have trees four to six metres in diameter that were 1,000 years old, they’re all gone. If I am lucky the Minister for the Environment may read this. Richard Plantinga, Beerwah
Mr Bowles and Mr Holmquist,
It does seem strange that such a small amount of CO2 (0.038% not 0.0038% as you say) has such a great effect – even other scientists thought so when Nobel Prize Winner Svent Arrhenius (whom you would have learnt about in your High School Physics classes) showed a century ago that it could cause global warming and cooling when it increased or decreased. That fact has been shown by many empirical methods as well as from first principles of physics. CO2 has the property of greater molecular vibration when heated than many other gases in the atmosphere. It passes that heat onto the other gases, and any small increase in CO2 in the upper atmosphere has a disproportionate effect in trapping heat. This all rests on basic physics. However, the details of exactly how it works are not so simple, as later scientists have discovered. A good publication on this is the book ‘Discovery of Global Warming’ (www.aip.org/history/climate/index.htm). As for being a pollutant or not, this is semantics.
Many things can become polluting if their concentration is too great. To say that Australia’s Climate Change Commission ‘has never produced any proof’ is simply not true – their purpose over the last few years has been to sift through thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers from all over the world, and supply unbiased results of that to government. The dismissal of this group and the failure to have a Minister of Science is a woeful decision. The proof that humans contribute a huge amount to the CO2 increase is demonstrated from isotope studies of air bubbles trapped in ancient ice from Antarctica. The records go back 100’s of 1,000’s of years. Light carbon 12 atoms from fossil-fuel burning increase in the atmosphere from the time of the industrial revolution. CO2 has increased about 35% during this time. Volcanic CO2 contains mostly heavy C13 in its CO2, so can be distinguished from that of fossil fuels. It has been shown that ice-ages coincide with low levels of ‘greenhouse’ gases whilst warmer periods coincide with high levels of CO2 and gases like methane. I am sorry to say your letter does not ‘raise the level of awareness’ – for me it does the reverse. As for the politics of climate scientists, they come from all persuasions from Right to Left and from many countries. Roger Callen Beerwah
Lazy or just plain ignorant!
Skippy Park is a beautiful area shared by many ages. I am there very early in the mornings and I see dogs off leash running around and doing their business and not being picked up after. I would love to let my dog off the leash but I abide by the rules as these rules are there for a reason. Some people think it's their right to let them off and do whatever they like in a public place. Don't think there are not eyes watching you, you make the responsible dog owners who use the park look bad. Put your dog on a leash and pick up their business so we can all enjoy this beautiful area. Landsborough Barber
In response to ‘not happy’ GCNews, October 16
I shop at the local Woolies each day, as well as doing a big shop on Sunday. On my daily shop I pick up things I've forgotten that we've run out of or spur of the moment things that we feel like having for dinner that night. It's on a very rare occasion that I can't find what I'm looking for. I have also kept Woolies meat in my fridge for days on end without it going off. I have dealt with Beerwah Woolies for several years now and have always found the staff very friendly and very helpful. From Jamie and Kerry in the meat department, to Gail, Debbie and Trudi at the registers, along with other staff members. Name supplied Beerwah
Chicken sheds on Barrs Road
To the residents of Barrs Road, Marsh's Road and the Estates near the GHM State School. I have lodged a complaint with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) regarding the noise and odour emitted from Woodlands Chicken Sheds. Numerous calls to Woodlands over the years have fallen on deaf ears. We are still having machinery operated at all hours of the night, keeping us
awake. This is not neighbourly conduct, and the smell emitted at times is so bad we have to move indoors and close the windows and doors, not good in summer when you are entertaining outside! If you are also affected by the noise and / or odour please email me at goodneighbours@gmail.com and I will send you a copy of the log the DAFF have sent me. Quiet Neighbour Glass House Mountains
Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Information Centre
I was disturbed to read in the Glasshouse Country News (October 16) about the sacking of staff in Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd and the apparent consequence that there will rarely be paid staff at the Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Information Centre. Such a facility cannot and should not rely solely on volunteers. Volunteers cannot be expected to maintain, secure and man the centre seven days a week. Cr Anna Grosskreutz and the then State Member for Glasshouse Carolyn Male MP pushed hard for this centre, which has provided an essential service since the day it was opened. I can only guess they would be appalled to know that not only will paid staff be removed, but also closure seems possible. I thought the Council wanted to encourage tourism to the Sunshine Coast? The Glasshouse Mountains facility is a gateway to the Coast and gives visitors all sorts of information. Bookings are not the only or even the main function. Travellers call in for many things - information about climbing the mountains, about coffee shops, a hard copy map, back roads, places to stay, the nearest toilet, a friendly chat and dozens of other reasons. These services are vital if we want to bring tourists to our part of the world and indeed, to the rest of the Sunshine Coast. What is the Council going to do about this dire situation? Will the Council take back management of the Coast’s visitor information centres? If not, and the Glasshouse Mountains Information Centre closes, Councillors will be the laughing-stock of the region – for building such an expensive facility, then allowing it to become a white elephant. Jo Barrett Glass House Mountains
Apologies to our neighbours
Apologies if we bothered you with our weekly burning of leaf and bush matter (legally of course and not on high fire danger days). In the past we would donate it to the recycling depot at Beerwah, but with the prices now being asked it is no longer a proposition. On Bald Knob Road recently we noticed five old car tyres dumped by the side of the road. This is the side effect of escalating recycling costs. As my old teacher use to say, ‘To every action there is an equal and opposite re-action’.
Peter Gawith Peachester
Thanks for your support

I give a moo for mooloolah
Give it a go and keep the heart of Mooloolah beating
locals supporting locals
Back in August, the Mooloolah community united to remind locals how important their community is to them – with the launch of ‘I give a Moo for Mooloolah’. Judging by the level of support at the community events held in Mooloolah as part of the Mooloolah 150 celebration – it would seem that the community spirit in town is running pretty high these days. So this is a great time to reinforce how important it is for everyone to do their bit in making sure that Mooloolah stays such a vibrant, caring and close community into the future. ‘I give a Moo for Mooloolah’ is about locals celebrating what they love about their town and also giving them a gentle reminder of how important it is to support local businesses to maintain the range, convenience and great service the town currently enjoys. In the lead up to Christmas, give a thought to how you can ‘keep your Moolah in Mooloolah’ by shopping locally. Katrina and David at the Mooloolah BP are rewarding their customers. Each time you spend over $30.00 in store you can go into the draw to win a $50.00 meat voucher from Mooloolah Meats – this would have to come in handy just in time for Christmas.

Sometimes choosing which natural therapy will be best for you is difficult. Often you need to have experienced different treatments to be able to decide which therapy will give you the most benefit. Both Bowen Therapy and Massage have many benefits to offer anyone suffering from a recent or long-term injury or illness. Chronic pain, muscle spasms, headaches or migraines, digestive and respiratory disorders, joint pain, anxiety and stress will all benefit from a therapeutic treatment too. Diane Rantall has a Diploma in both Bowen Therapy and Remedial Massage. Diane said a lot of her clients have in place a regular maintenance program which helps them to stay healthy and able to cope with the stresses of life. Maintenance programs are tailored to the individual. Often specific exercises are included to help maintain continued improvement. Whether you choose Bowen Therapy or Massage, both will have you feeling relaxed, with a reduction in pain, increased mobility and flexibility will also be noticeable. Regular treatments help to improve your immune and lymphatic systems thus helping to decrease anxiety and stress levels, which will improve your overall well-being. Diane’s hours are Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday 9.00am to 2.00pm, located at 14 Nicolle Court, Mooloolah Valley. For appointments or gift vouchers call 0408 593 304 or 5494 7818.

Get your home set for summer Summer (and Christmas) is coming – meaning that friends will be dropping over for lazy barbeques, the relations will be coming to stay and you’ll be looking to spend quality time with your family. Take a look around … are there lots of jobs you need to get started / get finished / get sorted? The yard and gardens need tidying up, the spare bedroom needs repainting, the front steps need retiling, the gutters are overflowing, the pool is looking murky, the front fence has fallen over, or the outdoor furniture needs a facelift? If you’ve got the spare time and some basic understanding of what you’re doing, you can get a lot of these jobs done yourself. There are some really great resources on-line which you can access for free to explain and show you how to do whatever it is that you need done. Surprisingly, YouTube can be a source of fantastic information. People have made instructional videos on just about everything you can image. However, take care if they are made in another country, as some of the equipment, rules and regulations are very different to those in Australia. The Beerwah Library has a large range of DIY books which you can borrow and study up on. Take a look at their on-line catalogue to see what’s available. Make sure you know any relevant Council rules which may be applicable. What size garden shed needs Council approval? How high can you build a fence? And if you need advice on hiring equipment, make sure you contact R & R Hire Services or check out their website www.rrhire.com.au So with eight weekends until those Christmas guests will be arriving – you had better get started now!

You’ve seen them do it on TV. It doesn’t look that hard, and you were pretty handy in woodwork at high school. You’ve got a saw, a drill and a paint roller somewhere in the shed. Redoing the bathroom can’t be that hard … can it? It is understandable that people want to freshen up their home with a few DIY projects, hoping to revamp the house and yard without paying too much money. However, there are some circumstances where paying for a professional can save you time and money in the long run, and the old saying, ‘you get what you pay for’ rings true. Experts caution DIY’ers to be realistic about their skills, abilities and how much time they have available. Professional tradespeople say that a lot of their work is fixing up what DIY’ers have tried to start. This usually ends up costing more money and taking more time than if the tradie was asked to do it to start with. Worse still, a novice renovator could end up with a serious injury if something goes wrong. So before you get your Bob the Builder tool belt on, ask yourself these three questions: 1. What experience do I have? Just because you’re not afraid to take something on, doesn’t mean you have to. 2. Do I really have the time to get it all finished? Think of the inconvenience of a job taking three weeks instead of three days. 3. Do I have the right tools? If you have to buy something that you’ll most likely only use once – it’s probably not worth it. Supporting our local trades and services means that you are helping keep local people employed, which in turn keeps our local economy turning over.

business and became extremely wealthy as the inventor of dynamite and gelignite. His work with dynamite led to the death of one of his brothers in a factory explosion and when another of his brothers, Ludwig died in 1888, a French newspaper incorrectly reported that Alfred had died, stating that ‘The merchant of death is dead’, criticising Nobel for his invention of dynamite and gelignite and also condemning him for opening 90 armament factories during his lifetime. Nobel, shocked by his obituary, decided to leave a more positive legacy, and decided to leave most of his fortune to fund the prizes which bear his name. So, how would you like to be remembered? Not many of us have the opportunity like Alfred Nobel to read our own obituaries, but all of us have the chance to change our lives and the lives of others for the better. I think I would like be remembered in a positive way and someone who used every day as a gift from God to be used to make a positive contribution to the lives of others. What about you? God Bless

Beerwah Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Kelly
Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987
One of the more important events in our golfing year was held on Friday night when around 80 patrons came along to the clubhouse for our annual Presentation Night. An evening of great food was MC'ed by our club Professional John Mellish who kept us all highly entertained all night. Our junior players, who represent the future of our club, were recognised for all their hard work this year when they were awarded medallions. The Junior Coordinator, Joan Harvey, received a Certificate of Appreciation from Golf Queensland in recognition of her tireless efforts helping the juniors achieve their goals. Joan not only supports the Juniors, but is on the Seniors committee, and is always available to help out the ladies and members alike. Thank you Joan, for your dedication to Beerwah Golf Club. Other recipients on the night included the A,B and C Grade Champions in the Senior, Members and Ladies competition. Our Matchplay and Foursomes Champions were awarded their trophies, and those lucky few who scored a Hole in One had their golf balls mounted and presented to them. The most important awards of the night go to the Member's and Ladies Club Champions. This year our Club Champion is Graeme Murray, while our Ladies Champion for 2013 is Andrea Campbell. A great night was had by all, but there is still plenty of golf left in the year, so come on out and have a hit.

We had 65 players come out on a fairly hot Thursday to compete in a Single Stroke for trophies kindly donated by Val Turner and Beth Abraham. The competition was played in 2 Divisions and the winner of Div 1 was Cath Cherry with a great score of 70 Nett. Cath was followed closely by runner up Lyn Nichols who had a 71 Nett. Division 2 was won by Helen Faithful with a 71 Nett, followed by Josie Thistlethwaite who came in with a 74 Nett. The Ball run down went to 75 Nett. Nearest to the Pins went to Jennifer Kelly on 2, Lorraine Dillon on 5, Carol Fraser took out the 16th and Heather Henn was closest on the 18th. Our winner Cath Cherry chose the right day to have a great game, because Thursday was also the day our Medal of Medalists was decided. Cath took home the trophy which was generously donated by our local fruit and veggie supplier, Matilda Fruit Barn in Glass House. Let’s hope this great weather keeps up so we can see lots of people take advantage of this wonderful course of ours. Stay safe and good golfing.

The Masterplan for the Beerwah Place+ project is ready for your review. Council consulted very extensively with the community in 2012 and, as a result of that consultation, we initially developed a Community Action Plan and a Streetscape Design for Simpson Street (that’s currently being implemented). Now the Masterplan is ready for your review – it’s an allencompassing document for all of Beerwah with a focus on the physical aspects and landscape and character of Beerwah as a modern country town. The Masterplan considers the open space network, pedestrian links, connectivity with surrounding towns and social hubs. The Masterplan makes significant progress on the future of the civic precinct that includes the Beerwah Hall, Library and Turner Park as it takes a close look at how well this section of town integrates with the main shopping area. The plan is now available for your review and feedback on Council’s website. We are also hosting a couple of community information sessions so you can come along and review the Masterplan on Thursday, October 31 from 6.00pm to 7.30pm at Beerwah RSL or Saturday, November 2 from 9.00am to 12.00noon at Beerwah Market Place. Mayor Mark Jamieson visited Beerwah for a walk about town and to meet a number of local business owners along Simpson Street. The Mayor was a special guest speaker at the Chamber meeting and gave an insightful talk about Council and the vision for the region’s economic development. I was very pleased to launch the ‘Shop Local First’ campaign at the meeting and you will start to notice the stickers and general display material popping up in shops across all of Glasshouse Country – remember to shop local. Congratulations to the organisers and volunteers and everyone who got involved in the many and varied activities of the Glasshouse Country Festival. There was so much to do and so many people working hard to make it a great festival for the whole community to enjoy - well done and thank you for putting on a great festival.

The Monster Cent Sale is set to be a great community evening on Saturday, November 9, doors open 6.00pm – come along to support the fundraising activities to save the Landsborough School of Arts Hall.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 The Mooloolah 150 year celebration was a razzle dazzle event jam packed with fantastic entertainment, a fun taste of the past and a vibrant community spirit that radiated throughout the day. Congratulations to the organising committee who have been planning for this milestone and celebration for many months – it was certainly a day to remember. I was very grateful to the Council crew who made sure the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve was looking its best in readiness for the celebrations it’s the small things that count like grass cutting, fence repairs, and green waste removal. If you’re passionate about cultural heritage you might be interested in joining the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group to provide strategic advice on preserving and accessing cultural heritage in the region. Council is keen to hear from people with experience in the heritage sector, business, tourism or marketing to nominate for voluntary positions. Applications close by 5.00pm on Wednesday, November 13, email culturalheritage@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for all the details. Over the next 12 months Council will consider the continuation of mandatory cat registration. It will be a decision based on community feedback and input and I’ll let you know when formal consultation on the matter begins in 2014. In the meantime, it is still mandatory to register your cat – visit Council’s website for more information about cat registration. You’re invited to attend this year’s ‘Get Ready Disaster Preparedness Seminar’. The seminar includes an ABC hosted Q and A style forum, a Seasonal Outlook and update from the Bureau of Meterology and the Get Ready information pack. All interested community members are welcome to attend this free event on Wednesday, October 30 from 5.00pm to 6.30pm at Gympie Civic Centre, 32 Mellor Street, Gympie. Make sure you RSVP to Julie Bruynius from Emergency Management Queensland on 5420 7581. While Bodie’s life hasn’t been touched by breast cancer, she decided to organise the event to try and make a difference, to help those that would benefit most. The night was a great success with over $4,000.00 raised going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Week beginning 30/10/13
SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The message that you were supposed to get in the first week of the month comes back to haunt you under your karma again, at the end of the month. It’s because of the back tracking of Mercury to make you more aware of the core issues that need to be understood and resolved now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Advancement initially gets all the green lights but it’s a good idea not to push your luck. Just be grateful for any modest help and you will find that persistence is a valuable trait. Whilst you will go after what you want, you will need to slow down every now and then to feel calmer. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 With Mercury and Saturn conjoining by the end of the month, discipline and focus are strong, however you should think more about old ideas than new ones. This is due to the fact that the contractual planet Mercury is in reverse, clearing out confusing clauses in old written contracts. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Handle any colleagues diplomatically and if you have to turn anyone away do it gently as you can’t be a financial friend to everybody. A powerful energy arrives for success as you realise that you are to focus on a major win. Avoid accident-prone behaviour.
PISCES February 20 – March 20 Until mid-November you are slipping into a large space of forgiveness and compassion in your own world. It’s not a time, under the reverse of Mercury, to ignore harsh realities. That also means long distance communication becomes corrupted, needing revision now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 It may be necessary to revisit a decision that you made in the first week of this month. This is due to Mercury in retrograde position having to revise many things in your life until mid November. Analytical and creative powers are useful until the weekend. Eliminate any obstacles now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The end of the month is a transformative push to do things with vigor and determination, both in work and play. Mars and Uranus show social upsets and may have something to do with home animals. Confirm any lunch dates in advance due to Mercury retrograde, showing mix-ups / delays. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Under a Mercury Saturn conjunction, repeating itself again by November 29, you will receive another chance to sort through intellectual matters. It’s also possible you will feel caught up in the web of daily routines. These may prevent you from checking the right facts first. Pay attention to detail.
CANCER June 22 – July 22 Spontaneous expression stalls under the communication planet Mercury, reversing in its sign. Strong resolve can overcome this obstacle with the help of a potent Mars / Pluto aspect. Running or jogging with Mars slipping on Uranus this week says ‘don’t take any risky pothole paths’ now. LEO July 23 – August 22 The current Sun sign connects with the mysterious Scorpio energies and so underlying hidden family issues get stirred up. With Mars and Uranus clashing, you may have your work cut out to transform old failures into emotional pathways for evolutionary growth. Watch misplaced sympathies. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Your ruling planet Mercury is still undergoing its reverse cycle until mid November. You may find you can do exacting work on bookkeeping, research, shopping for necessities and getting health treatments. Not the best time under aggressive Mars / Uranus combination for wild aggression. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 A good time to wash any rose-coloured glasses with a clear solution. No one really means what they say until the middle of next month. Tough decisions are called for as you dredge up deep information about your current depleted fiscal status. Monetary regeneration is better next month.

Mick, you've won $1 million!" The next night, Mick went to their local pub to celebrate. “Tell me, Johno, how did you know it was the Cuckoo that doesn't build its own nest?” “Because he lives in a bloody clock…” Hugh Jones, Beerwah
