Hi Everyone One of the most amazing things in a small community is how rumors get started – and how even if they do not have a grain of truth in them, that they can take on a life of their own. This week we heard a rumour about GCNews that has us totally bemused – apparently the story goes that we are planning to no longer print the paper and people will have to read it on line. Well let me assure everyone that I can’t think of anything worse for readers – I love reading newspapers and magazines and my favourite thing is when I have my morning coffee or a leisurely breakfast to sit back and read the papers. And yes we do provide the paper on-line; this is part of us providing more to our community. It means that for those readers who like this approach it is available, and we
have had a great response to it from locals who are travelling, or have kids overseas or people who have moved out of the area but want to keep up with what is going on. Also it is great for people who are looking to move into the area, and for when you have thrown away an edition from a couple of weeks ago without writing down a number – now there is no need to go searching for it in the recycling bin. So please don’t panic if you are not into reading ‘on-line’ we will continue printing the paper each week. Regards,

Sunshine Coast Council last week refused the much talked about application to build a 24hour McDonalds restaurant on the industrial lands at the corner of Steve Irwin Way and Caloundra Street, Landsborough. The assessment report, prepared by Council planning staff, found that the proposed material change of use for the site was inconsistent with the Caloundra City Plan. Division 1 Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz said when she first met with the applicant that she had made it quite clear that the application would not comply with the planning scheme, however they chose to pursue it, and now that the application has been unsuccessful they can also choose to challenge the decision. Council’s report concluded that the proposal conflicts with the City Plan aim of preserving the character and identity of the Landsborough area. It also found that the proposed use conflicted with Councils intentions to protect business zoning and industry use lands. The report acknowledged that some public benefit would arise from the development, including road upgrades and local employment, however it stated that the type and level of perceived benefits are ‘not sufficient to outweigh the significant conflicts with the planning scheme’. As part of the application, a street survey was undertaken which showed that 34 per cent of

The assessment report specifically remarked that the survey was considerably flawed and so could not be relied upon to provide useful or representative information for assessing the community support or otherwise for the proposal. Cr Anna said she had spoken with many locals about having a McDonalds in Glasshouse Country and while there was mixed reactions, many locals are in favour of the increased employment / career opportunities McDonalds would bring to the area. “However it would make more sense for a McDonalds to be located in the region’s centre of Beerwah, where there would be more suitable properties,” Cr Anna said.

Ekka success for young champion All little girls love horses, but it takes someone with drive and determination, to turn that passion into an award winning sporting performance. That special someone is Hannah Giblin, 11, from Landsborough who, with her pony Millawarrah Mandalay won the Under 12 Rider Class and also the Overall Champion against all age groups Under 12 at the Ekka recently. Hannah has been riding since she was four and has been a member of the Glasshouse Pony Club for almost three years. This was the first time she had competed at the Ekka. “It was really exciting but I was also nervous,” she said. “I was really happy that my horse performed the way I wanted her to.” To get past the nerves Hannah said she just concentrated on what she had to do. This included showing the judges horse riding skills such as figure eight, trot, canter and sitting trot. Grooming is also a big component for both the horse and rider which can take hours of preparation. Although more intense training and preparation starts about six weeks before Hannah and Mandy compete at a show, it is the daily effort, riding after school and at the weekends, and looking after her horse that is necessary to develop an Ekka Champion. Hannah's sights are now firmly fixed on the Grand Nationals event to be held in Sydney next year. Her win at the Ekka and a previous runner-up

Remembering Keith Inglis
Countdown to Hinterland Relay for Life
On Friday, August 26 a 'Chair of Remembrance' at the entrance of Beerwah RSL was dedicated to Keith Inglis who passed away tragically almost two years ago in a car accident. Keith’s wife, Valerie, unveiled the plaque recognising Keith and also the partnership between the Rotary Club and the RSL, two organisations Keith had been involved with for over 50 years. Bob McLean, Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains Service Director and past President, said Keith would have been extremely humbled at being recognised. “Whatever he did, he didn’t do it for any personal recognition. Helping others is what he loved to do,” he said. Bob said Keith has been sorely missed. “He was well respected in the community. He was just such a kind and committed person to whatever he was involved in.” This not only included his involvement with Rotary and the RSL but he was also extremely active in the Uniting church and was a founding President of the Glass House Mountains Probus Club. Personal interests of his included gardening, orchid growing and competition lawn bowls. Even when Keith was ill in his latter years he still continued to help others, a trait which inspired many. “He loved his family. He was a humble, quiet achiever. If you wanted counsel about anything he was the guy to go to. He was in touch with people and how to do things well,” Bob said.
There's only just over a month to go until the Maleny & Hinterland Relay for Life on October 8 – 9 at the Maleny Showgrounds.

BOO John Rouhan, President of the Beerwah/ Peachester RSL Sub Branch said the Chair of Remembrance was a great way to remember Keith. “I think it’s wonderful that Rotary donated the chair to the Sub Branch and great that it is dedicated to one of our past Sub Branch members. Keith was very supportive of our Sub Branch and of the RSL movement in general. I think he’s been a wonderful supporter in all aspects of the community,” he said. y nit
Locals are invited to join in the celebrations of this year’s relay by getting their friends, families and workmates together and registering. Last year, more than 250 locals raised over $30,000 at the event and organisers are hoping to register more than 30 teams and raise more than $40,000 at this year’s Relay. Team registration costs $15.00 per adult and $11.00 per child under 18. All participants will receive a Relay For Life T-shirt on registration. Relay For Life Co-ordinator Sara Morley said support for Relay from the local community had been growing every year. Relay For Life is a state-wide event involving teams of 10 to 15 people walking around a track overnight for 18 hours, to celebrate cancer survival and raise funds for Queensland cancer patients. Relay For Life is an opportunity for the whole community to remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate our community’s cancer survivors and fight back against a disease that takes too much. To register your team, visit www.relayforlife.org.au or call 1300 65 65 85. If you are keen to get involved, GCNews would like to share your story with the rest of the community and support your fundraising efforts. Once you have registered give our office a call on 5438 7445 or email editorial@gcnews.com.au

Carpark warning
In the space of 15 minutes, 99 per cent of the cars using the carpark in front of Glass House Mountains IGA either exited using the wrong driveway or entered using the wrong driveway. But you can’t blame the drivers; the only indication that a new one way ‘entrance / exit’ system has been established is a painted arrow on the ground – which drivers become aware of too late. No other signage has been erected to warn drivers of the change to the carpark. Rebecca, from Beerwah has seen many problems created by the new setup. “It’s a safety hazard.

Tricia Leith I’ve seen quite a few near misses.” Tricia Leith didn’t even notice the change when she parked her car. “It definitely needs signs,” she said, “the arrows are not enough. After all this time of the driveways being two way, people need to be told it has changed. We have a lot of visitors, how will they know?” Keith and Teresa Hickman agree signage is needed well before cars reach either of the two driveways into the carpark. “This whole carpark (in front of the IGA) is awkward. They should leave it how it used to be,” Keith said. Now the ‘entrance’ is from Bruce Parade and the ‘exit’ on Reed Street, opposite the Tavern. The driveway’s themselves have not been altered in width, so until everyone is aware of the change, please proceed with caution.

What would happen if YOUR feet were “OUT OF ACTION”?
KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE WITH LONG WALKS, RUNNING AND TEAM SPORTS LIKE FOOTBALL AND NETBALL ARE GREAT FOR YOUR HEALTH AND OVERALL WELLBEING... BUT HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ON YOUR FEET AND LEGS? These activities increase the force going through the joints of the foot which then creates a larger demand on the foot and leg muscle. Poor alignment or muscle weakness in the feet and legs may not be noticed in an under-active person; however when we ask our body to increase our physical activity, the added force and demand on the musculoskeletal structure often causes pain and injury.

‘SHIN SPLINTS’ (also known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome MTSS) is a condition that Podiatrists commonly treat within running and sporting groups. The most obvious symptom is pain in the front of the lower leg. ‘ACHING ARCHES’ are also a common site of pain affecting active people. Some of the larger muscles in the lower leg insert into this arch area of the foot, plus FOUR LAYERS of smaller muscles situated underneath the foot.
There are multiple conditions that cause pain in these locations, so an accurate assessment and diagnosis is essential. At Stepping Out Podiatry our qualified Podiatrists are trained to help with gait assessment (walking/ running style), strapping and offloading pain relief, as well as footwear advice and biomechanical assessments. So, please call our friendly staff if you would like a personalised treatment plan to suit the conditions and needs of your feet.

Stacey makes finals in training award
Landsborough local Stacey Bentley was a finalist in the North Coast Regional Queensland Training Awards held in Maryborough earlier this month. There were 20 nominations in this region for the School based apprentice or trainee of the year with successful applicants short listed, to go forward to the Regional Final. There was a strict application process all nominees had to go through which involved writing an essay about themselves. Some of the qualities the judges were looking for included: strong leadership skills, understanding of their industry, future personal and career goals, how training has helped on and off the job, the current economy / environmental climate events, current qualifications, community involvement, and any other significant achievements. Stacey, who also recently appeared in an article in GCNews about her amazing results in the Paint Horse Youth World Championships in America, is currently completing Year 12 at Beerwah State High School. Congratulations to Stacey and her employer Gayle Johnson from Landsborough Post Office on being one of the finalists. Stacey has successfully completed a Certificate 11 in Retail within 10 months. She is now completing her Certificate 111 in Retail and a Business Communication Technology Certificate 11 at school. Stacey would like to thank Mrs Cindy Reader the Industry Liaison Officer at Beerwah State High School for nominating her for this award and her employer for allowing her to undertake her Traineeship.

It’s time to save energy
Are you having problems with your power bill getting out of control, or are you interested in learning more about solar power? If so, then come along to a free energy saving and solar power workshop in Mooloolah Valley. Hosted by Ross Smith from Eco-Fit Australia, Wiebe te Bals from Sunshine Coast Environment Council, and the Mooloolah Sustainable Living Group, you’ll be sure to get lots of tips on saving electricity and information about installing solar power and hot water. Recently nominated for a SCRC ‘Glossies’ Award, Eco-Fit Australia has helped hundreds of local homeowners reduce their electricity consumption and find their way through the ‘solar maze’ to install solar power in a way that is suitable and affordable for them. Interested businesses or community organisations can also find out about joining the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Climatesmart Business Cluster.
This program, sponsored by Dept of Environment and Resource Management, offers help to organisations via on-site assessments to reduce usage and costs for power, water or waste. Another topic for discussion will be Community Solar Grants which are available for eligible community organisations. Ross has worked with a number of local community groups to get solar power systems installed at no-cost with the help of a solar grant. This provides environmental benefits, and also years of savings on power costs. Having successfully presented a recent series of talks at Sunshine Coast libraries on energy saving and solar power, Wiebe te Bals from the Sunshine Coast Environment Council will share his expertise and knowledge in this field, and on related environmental topics. Did you know Australia is one of the highest per capita users of electricity? To find out more about
L-R Ross Smith (Eco-Fit Australia), Helen Keeble (Op Shop Coordinator), Natasha Odgers (Mooloolah Community Centre Vice President) and Marion Green (Op Shop Volunteer) where you can save, come along to this free event on Thursday, September 8, 6.30pm to 8.00pm at Mooloolah Community Centre, Bray Road, Mooloolah Valley. Tea and coffee are provided and children are welcome. See you there! Bring your power bill! Bookings are essential. To register, please reply to Ross Smith, 0419 669 175 or ross@eco-fit.com.au
Colin loved his hot lap Last Tuesday, Colin Phillips of Glass House Mountains got to see firsthand what the job of a V8 Supercar driver was like when he did two laps of Willow Bank in Ford No 9 of the SP Tools/Stone Brothers racing team, driven by Shane van Gisbergen. Colin said the car reached speeds of up to 300km an hour. “Corners where you would do at maybe 50 they do them at 140, with my foot firmly planted on the floor breaking,” he said. “You can understand why the guys have to be so fit with all the G forces they have on
them and how hot it was for just the two laps, let alone a full race, especially on hot days, you can understand why they lose so much weight in lost fluid. “Everything was very fast, even the way each person was put into and out of the car, but nothing was too much for the guys organising it all,” Colin said. Colin would like to thank the guys at Bitz Auto in at Beerwah for the prize (he won it last Xmas at their grand re-opening) along with Jess Plush from the SP Tools/Stone Brothers racing team.

New hearing support at the Events Centre A new hearing support system, to allow access to the wide range of quality performances currently on offer to the ‘hearing’ public, has just been installed at The Events Centre, Caloundra. This is for use by the estimated one in six hearing Impaired Sunshine Coast residents who are now able to attend and enjoy all manner of cultural presentations. These individual Hearing Assistance FM Units take two forms. One style of belt–pack (24 available), utilises a personal neck loop to be worn in conjunction with hearing aids. The wearer will ‘hear’ VIA the T switch, activated on the hearing aid. There are also 24 headsets available for people who don’t wear hearing aids, but may require a boost to their hearing to get the most out of any particular show. A request for one of these packs can be noted when bookings are made, guaranteeing availability and ensuring a quality theatre or concert experience is offered to hearing impaired patrons.

Ground breaking ceremony at Acacia Grove, Beerburrum Councillor Anna Grosskreutz will officiate at the ground breaking ceremony on Saturday, September 3 to celebrate the commencement of construction works at Acacia Grove, Beerburrum, a 77 lot rural residential estate by The Village Building Co. Under the current Planning Scheme, Acacia Grove represents the last opportunity for buyers to purchase 1500sqm or larger lots within a short walking distance of the Beerburrum train station, schools and shops. The Village Building Co held extensive consultation with the Beerburrum community during the planning period and Cr Grosskreutz, Division 1 Councillor and Chair of the Sunshine Coast Housing Affordability Taskforce is pleased that the works are finally about to commence on site. “In keeping with the feedback and character of the Beerburrum township, lot sizes at Acacia Grove are generous and will provide a great opportunity for families to live in a fantastic location, with views of the Glass House Mountains right on their doorstep,” said Cr
Grosskreutz. Sharyn Oppenhuis, Sales Manager for Village Building said: “Acacia Grove was released for sale in February this year and those people who have already purchased their land will be keen to begin construction on their new homes. Once the site works are completed, we expect to see some beautiful homes being developed onsite.” The ceremony will commence at 10.30am and the whole community has been invited. Complimentary barbeque, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be provided. Acacia Grove is located off Acacia Avenue in Beerburrum. Acacia Grove offers large land lots sized from 1500sqm to 2550sqm priced from $199,900. Book Week fun
Diving for gold
Most people dig for gold and find nothing, however, Emily Scott dove for gold and came up trumps. Emily Scott, 14, from Glasshouse Country Christian College, has just become a national diving champion winning a gold medal. Emily performed in the 13/14 year age group at the recent School Sport Australia Swimming and Diving Championship in Melbourne. The competition was strong and Emily was up against divers from the NSW and Victorian Institute of Sport who train in the best facilities in Australia and spend up to 25 hours a week in preparation for the competition. The competition was so tight that there were only a couple of points separating the top 10 divers. Emily somersaulted and ‘ripped’ (no splash entry) her way to one gold medal, one bronze medal and a fifth placement. Diving takes a lot of time, dedication, fearlessness and hard work. The sky is the limit for Emily as her natural gift and further training will only enhance her talent and ability.

The fun just never stops here! Contributed by Sam Marston, Director On Wednesday, August 24 the children at Landsborough Child Care Centre took advantage of the rainy days and enjoyed staying in their pj’s all day! They enjoyed pillow tossing games, musical mattresses, marshmallow construction and threading fruit loop necklaces. Balloon games, shadow making and face painting were also lots of fun! Sausages in bread blankets and poppers were enjoyed by all for lunch. We would like to thank Landsborough Butcher for donating their delicious sausages and Bucks Bakery for donating their beautiful bread.
A rare opportunity to play all day in their pjs at Landsborough Child Care Centre
You could feel the excitement as students arrived at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School on Wednesday. Many had been up for hours, putting on costumes and makeup in preparation for the annual Book Week parade. Parents proudly took photos, as teachers – many of whom were also in costume – welcomed everyone for a fun-filled day of celebrating books. The new St Paul’s library was a popular destination, with a huge book fair in the Reading Pit. Smaller items such as stationery and bookmarks were also for sale, with animal shaped erasers being among the most popular. The most popular book being talked out was ‘Hullabazoo!’ by Tracey Roper and illustrated by Lisa Hollier. In ‘Hullabazoo!’ both a St Paul’s student and the school groundsman put in an appearance. The previous week had also been a story-laden one, with students from the school winning 27 of the 80 awards in the ‘Writing Competition’ run by the local Teacher Librarian network. Mrs Libby Sansome, the St Paul’s Curriculum Coordinator, was extremely proud of the students’ efforts. “This year, St Paul’s has excelled, she said. “We have broken records of past years with 27 winners alongside a record number of entries. What amazing results!”

A quickly prescribed treatment whether pharmaceutical or more natural/ neutraceutical may offer some relatively instant relief or support, but often is still just a cap on a Pandora’s box of longer term disease,” said Roz. Roz explains naturopathic consultation (or a series of, as may be needed) “aims to further explore the predisposing, excitatory and sustaining causes of disease, thereby enabling considered supportive treatment, either alone or alongside conventionally prescribed medication.” “Today most health funds provide rebates for herbal medicine in recognition of the fact that the use of herbal medicine is well supported by both Australian and international evidence-based research,” said Roz. “Perhaps I can help you to find a balance in your health.” Phone Roz on 0403 015 564 to make an appointment for Monday or Tuesdays at Beerwah Health Foods, 68 Simpson Street, Beerwah.

Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade Contributed by Lou Span
G'day readers, The last couple of weeks have been fairly busy ones for all of the Rural Fire Brigades in the area trying to get all of their controlled burns out of the way. You may have noticed a lot of smoke. This is all part of preparing the hinterland for what may be potentially a big fire season. Beerwah RFB has certainly been active with four fire calls, to private property fires at Bell’s Creek and the Bruce Highway, and two calls to the Daniel Morcombe search site.

We have also contributed to some of that smoke with the completion of a 1,500 acre burn off at Caloundra Downs off Bell’s Creek Road on Saturday, August 20. A big thank you to all of the crews who assisted. Thank you to Andrew and the new recruits from Landsborough. We are always needing volunteers for the Brigade and we have only just started training our new recruits, so now’s the time. If you have some spare time and would like to be part of a great team, make enquiries on 0438 389 998. For burnoffs and Beerwah Brigade business phone 0438 389 998.
Our Brigade recently held our Annual General Meeting. The only change to our Officers and Committee was Peter Angell decided not to stand again as an Officer after dedicating so many years as Third Officer and then Second Officer of our brigade. He did a great job as an Officer and still continues to be an active member who supports and volunteers his time to the brigade. Thanks Pete for all of your dedication and time as an Officer of our Brigade. We welcome Andrew Brooks who was elected to take on an Officer role in our Brigade. The Officers and Committee are as follows: First Officer - Craig Young, Second Officer - Julia Meaker, Third Officer - Trevor Jakeman, Fourth Officer - Kev Sedgman, Fifth Officer - Andrew Brooks, Sixth Officer - Paul Addison. Chairman: Brian Appleby, Secretary: Helen Jakeman and Treasurer: Heather Carney If you need to contact anyone from the Brigade please phone Craig Young (1st Officer) on 0408 713 609 or Helen Jakeman (Secretary) 5494 1031. On Sunday, November 20 our brigade will be holding an Open Day at our Fire Station to help celebrate our brigade being reformed for 20
years. The previous Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade had folded in approximately 1966 and the present brigade was formed in 1991 after very severe fires, originating from Peachester, swept through the Mt Mellum area and on to properties on Old Gympie Road. The nucleolus of the brigade was elected on October 3, 1991 at a public meeting attended by over 200 local residents. From that date our brigade has continued to grow from strength to strength and we would like to celebrate the last 20 years, with not only past members, but all of the local community, who have always given our brigade constant support. As November 20 draws closer we will keep you informed of the final arrangements for the day. On a final note our brigade would like to pay tribute to a fine gentleman – Mr Stan Tutt who passed away recently. Stan was the secretary of the original Landsborough Rural Brigade and he was the first person to make contact with our brigade when it was reformed. He was able to show us where some of the original equipment was stored and to this day we still have some of these items on display in our shed. He was a true gentleman who gave so much to this community; it was a pleasure to know him.

You Said It
Be vigilant about sun safety
I write this letter so people understand that melanomas and sun cancer may be controlled if not neglected in the early stages. Everyone must be vigilant. I grew up in the 1960’s and enjoyed our weekly Sundays down the Gold Coast. I got sunburnt nearly every summer weekend during that time. My first major occupation was as a railway clerk in Mount Isa. Later I joined the Queensland Police service and served in many outback locations. More sun but no protection. Over the years I have had some minor sun cancers removed. In 2008/2009 I had operations at a skin clinic for the removal of melanomas from my back. On June 17, 2011, I was diagnosed with brain tumours, later verified to have spread from the melanomas. I have since spent 33 days in hospital under the care of surgeons, doctors, specialists and nurses during the past seven weeks. On August 1, 2011 two metastatic brain tumours were removed from my head and brain stem. One hundred per cent removal could not be guaranteed and apart from some areas of right side paralysis, I am talking and thinking. I have a large scar across the top of my head, (healing well). On August 10, I had a malignant tumour removed from my chest. Again this was verified to have come from the melanomas. I am classed as terminal and due to commence radiation on remaining cancer cells in my body on August 24, 2011. Talk of survival rates from brain cancer is minimal but I am confident. I tell my story because at 54 years old I am still young, and have come to terms with all my present situations. I also recommend to people to have all suspect skin problems checked. Young and older people should be aware that melanomas are a very active concern and need to be attended to as soon as possible to avoid far more serious consequences. If someone needs to talk or ask questions regarding this serious disease give me a call or send me an email to discuss further if I can be of help. Contact me via Glasshouse Country News 5438 7445. reads ‘When you go home, tell them we gave our today’s for their tomorrows’. I wonder if they rest easy, knowing what the pollies on both sides have been doing to this country, which they gave their lives for. The quicker they both go the better. They should be made, forced, to the graves, and look at kids who had the guts to put their country first. L. Swansborough, Mooloolah
Day of the disappeared
Thanks from Charity Sports Committee. The 40th annual Beerwah Charity Sports was a fairly wet affair. However thanks to generous support from the local community, the Charity Sports Committee will still be able to make a reasonable contribution to Cancer Council Queensland. In the bleakest of days the workers and our supporters turned on a cheery face and made the best of a wet occasion. Everyone seemed happy and pleased to be there to celebrate the 40th Charity Sports. I would like to say a special thank you to the judges and the competitors. The judges stood out in the rain and the competitors competed in the rain, and there was not a single complaint about the weather. All entered into the spirit of the occasion to celebrate this milestone. The same cheerful spirit was evident throughout the grounds. Thanks to all the other community groups and individuals who work at the Charity Sports each year. Teams of volunteers persevered in trying conditions – manning stalls, directing traffic, running events, and generally helping the 40th sports day to go ahead. I would also like to thank our sponsors. We would not have been able to achieve this 40 year milestone without the generous support of so many sponsors. At times like this you realise how important it is to support your local businesses as they are the people who support the local community. (Results from events, raffles and competitions will be published in next week’s GCNews.) Bruce Page

Beerwah's biggest chance - are we ready for it?
Beerwah Township has a very important opportunity ahead that we need to be ready for. I would go as far as to say that its Beerwah's biggest chance yet to define its future as a township. Around October, Council is going to commence the consultation process as part of developing a 'Placemaking' master plan for the township of Beerwah. At the same time, economic, community and social infrastructure plans will also be developed by Council staff. This sort of comprehensive planning happens once in a generation or less. As Beerwah is the designated major activity centre for the district, we all have a stake in its future success. So a key question is how well prepared are we as a community to really make the most of this potentially pivotal 'placemaking' opportunity? To make it more concrete, this is the planning that will determine how $3 million will be spent on Beerwah Township in 2013/15. Not an enormous amount by today's standards but enough to make some major differences. For example, undergrounding the ugly power lines and selective widening of pathway's as well as improved crossings, surfaces, street furniture and landscaping, are the sorts of things that collectively change turning a street into a successful community hub. And that's exactly what we need to do with Beerwah's Township. The key challenge is how we balance out our role as a contemporary service centre and transport hub with our strong sense of wanting to retain our identity as a regional 'village' community with important layers of local history and a tourism role as a gateway to the Glasshouse Mountains and the Hinterland. We can do this, but we need to start now and think ahead of the consultation processes. I would strongly recommend that Council consider providing a preliminary background profile of the township in the local press with some suitable examples of similar projects to help us visualise options and test them through community debate. It's not impossible to do it during the consultation process but early preparation would help bring our newer residents up to speed and give us all the time to be ready for Beerwah's biggest opportunity yet. Or is that asking too much? Rick Baberowski Independent Candidate for Division 1 www.pickrick.com.au

Living Well September at the Library with Dell, Amanda and Staff at Beerwah Library
Literacy – we can all be part of the solution! Interesting facts: • 46 per cent of Australians have literacy skills assessed as unable to function effectively in a knowledge based economy. • Half a child’s brain growth occurs between birth and age four. • By three years of age, 50 per cent of our language is in place. • The ability to develop pre-literacy skills increases when a child is read to from birth.
What is happening at the Library? Our Friends of the Beerwah Library meeting will be held at 9.45am on September 7. We invite you to join a group of enthusiastic people who provide support to Beerwah Library, a focal point for local community social interaction. ‘Secret to happiness’ will be held at 2.00pm on September 7. Whole brain intelligence gives you 100 per cent clarity over why we struggle in our life, why our bodies get ill, why we repeat financial troubles, and what’s at the heart of our relationship meltdown… and best of all, what the solutions are to these life questions! Sunshine Coast Councils’ Environmental Operations will be raising awareness of the threat weeds pose to our natural environment through eco art. Some of the art work will form a weed monster sculpture to be on display at the Art and Ecology Centre. Bookings essential.

Set goals for better health Goal setting is a fun, easy way to improve any aspect of your life. It is well documented that people who set goals and write them down are far more likely to achieve them. I encourage everyone to make better health a personal goal, and write it down! In a world where every chronic disease is on the rise, and life expectancy is decreasing for the first time ever in the history of mankind, improving and maintaining one’s health should be on top of the goal list! There are a few tips to follow when setting goals. Rule #1: Have a strong purpose for setting a goal. For example, ‘achieving optimal health so I can watch my grandkids grow up’ is pretty powerful when compared to ‘I want to be healthier.’ Rule #2: Be very clear and specific in your goal setting. Having a goal to lower blood pressure by 10 points and lose 10 centimetres off your waist is much more specific than just getting healthy. By having a clear goal, you create an ‘end target’ to work towards. Rule #3: Create a deadline to achieve your goals. This will create urgency and get you up and going. The first step is often the hardest! Rule #4: Monitor your progress. If your goal is to lose 10 kilos in six months, then at three months you should be halfway there. If not, step up the pace! Rule #5: Celebrate accomplishing each goal. Moving closer to optimal health is reward in itself, but it’s important to reward yourself for hard work accomplished. Decide to treat yourself to something you want, but don’t necessarily need, once your goal is achieved. Maybe it’s a new set of golf clubs, or a nice relaxing massage. Don’t wait until January 1 to set new goals. Use these tips now to start creating and accomplishing set goals on your journey to optimal health! Beerwah Wellness Clinic, Beerwah Plaza. Ph: 5494 0499

ATL Graphix for design expertise
ATL Graphix at your service with their state of the art facilities
Bruce and Kerry Allen, owners of ATL Graphix and their daughter Renee, say customers can visit them for all manner of designs ranging from the conservative to the imaginative. Given their high tech design experience and ever friendly personal touch, ATL Graphix can cater to everyone’s needs. “Having just expanded from our wholesale business into the retail world, as a result of customer demand and outgrowing the premises, we can now provide greater customer options and services via our new showroom,” Kerry says. “We have a great opening special offer for tradies to have three sides of their vehicle signed and we will give them 1,000 business cards at no charge*, free!" adds Bruce. Having been in business for four years, Bruce says their business has gone from strength to strength and services have increased accordingly. “Our services range from wide format digital printing, banners and billboards, and we also provide vehicle graphics, decals, stickers, trade show displays, promotional products, stationery, business cards, shop fronts and custom specialty signs, meaning they are all customised to suit their customers’ specific needs.” One of the many benefits of working with ATL Graphix is finding expertise in a local setting. ATL Graphix is also the first retailer to offer wide formatting digital imaging of this magnitude in the area.
GR Aussie Carpets & Vinyl would like to take this opportunity to commend Bruce and his talented team at ATL Graphix for their specialised service and advice. Congratulations on the new shop.
We at Robert Keeble Tree Services choose ATL Graphix for all our truck and safety signs as they offer the quality and durability we require in our work environment, and because customising our signage to what we need is never a problem. All the best to the team and their new venture.

“We are now able to provide the best price to our local customers without them needing to leave the area,” says Bruce. Bruce explains he is eager to network with local businesses to provide personal, one-on-one attention which means providing the customer with confidence in the knowledge they are dealing with the one person from the job’s start to the finish. Also well aware of the harsh economic climate that faces local business, Bruce will work with you to achieve the best possible results, working with your ideas. “Our logos, graphics and custom designs are only limited by your imagination,” he says. Or, if you choose, you can also let Bruce and Renee’s imagination lead the way. With the new showroom open, fully operational and located at Beerwah Parade, Beerwah, pop in to find a range of promotional product ideas available. Renee is the office manager and therefore the frontline for the business and often the first face or voice to greet you. She will use her ever growing skills to give constructive advice and embellish on your ideas. Bruce, Kerry and Renee wish to invite clients and the community to a ‘meet and greet’ event at the show room on Saturday, September 3 from 8.00am. So call down, meet the team, enjoy a barbecue sausage sizzle, see the race cars and street cars on display and get your car washed while you enjoy the morning! Nichols Avenue, Beerwah Pathway
Brandenburg and Hovard Road, Mooloolah – Landslip Repair. Council will be undertaking works to remedy the landslips along Brandenburg Road and Hovard Road. The purpose of the remediation works is to restore two-way traffic to Brandenburg Road, which will help to ensure the safety of the road users along both roads. During construction, council will endeavour to minimise traffic disruptions, however given the nature of the works, some delays are to be expected. The work is expect to commence in late August with completion date anticipate within 12 weeks (weather permitting). Sunshine Coast Council Tender Alert – Council is pleased to advise that the following tender has been advertised: Bridge Creek Road Bridge – Cast In Place Pier Works (Contract No. 1112017). Council uses an electronic tendering system. To obtain tender documents, please visit https://secure. publicworks.qld.gov.au/etender/home.do First time users will need to register as a new supplier. To be notified of Council’s upcoming publicly advertised tenders, the Qld Government recommends that you ‘Select All Categories’ under ‘Products/Services’.
Council have commenced works to construct a 1.8 metre wide pathway to link Peachester Road and Roberts Road, Beerwah. The pathway will run the length of Nichols Avenue and will extend the existing pathway. This $65,000 project will take approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting.
Additional disabled parking bay at Glasshouse Mountains State School Earlier this year the Glasshouse Mountains State School contacted my office to request an additional disability carpark, as they had only one designated space, with a number of families requiring them. I am pleased to advise that Council Traffic Technical Officers supported this request, and the additional disability parking bay has been installed.
Bruce Highway median closures – Roys Road, Bells Creek Road
Earlier this month the Department of Transport and Main Roads informed Council that the median cross-overs on the Bruce Highway at Roys Road, Bells Creek Road would be permanently closed from mid August, for safety reasons. Once the closures are in place, motorists will no longer be able to cross the highway or turn right at these locations. This will mean that residents who regularly use the median cross-overs will need to use alternative routes via the Johnstone Road overpass or Caloundra Interchange, with the distance either way of approximately 20klm. As this is an unacceptable solution and will inconvenience many residents, I have written to the Minister of Main Roads, seeking to have the Roys Road Underpass sealed. The sealing of this road traditionally used by forestry in past years will direct residents who wish to cross over the Bruce Highway’s four lanes, to a safer option. I am hopeful of a positive response, and will keep you informed on the outcome of my request. Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.
The Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival 2011 September 10-11.
This festival is a fantastic celebration of the wonderful variety of food that Sunshine Coast producers, manufacturers and restaurants have to offer, and a brilliant way to talk, taste and buy from them. Throughout the weekend – restaurants and cafes throughout the SC Hinterland are featuring special menus, using local product. Please take the time to visit Spicers Clovelly Estate, Reserve Restaurant, Pomodoras on Obi, The Terrace of Maleny, Green Kitchen Café. Saturday, September 10 – a few of the things you can do is to book into one of the cooking classes, join a tour to see working farms producing organic vegetables, herbs and dairy, learn how to make a wood-fired pizza in your own back yard. More info www.realfoodfestival. com.au Sunday, September 11, Real Food Celebration at Maleny Showgrounds, follow the food chain from paddock to plate. Free native plants - Council is hosting weed swaps at libraries right across the Coast. Simply bring along a bag full of weeds to receive two native plants for free. BENEFITS OF SMART ADVICE One of the most direct impacts of the global credit crisis on Australian homebuyers is that access to finance is growing more complex. There are still a large number of products and lenders available, however securing finance to purchase a property has become more challenging over the past 12 months. Lending policies have tightened up, a number of products have been withdrawn from the market and considerable differences in the interest rates and features being offered by lenders have emerged.
www.gcnews.com.au
For Australian property purchasers one of the most obvious examples of this tightening access to credit has been the gradual withdrawal of low deposit loans, and the requirement to provide much more evidence of savings to obtain finance. However, the string of interest rate cuts in recent months mean home finance is at the cheapest levels seen in many years. For most home buyers – those with a reasonable deposit or equity in an existing property, a good savings and

Modern with Queensland style
Down & Dirty with Brownie Jobs for the yard in September • Grow any herbs now – except coriander
Love everything a Queenslander has to offer, but want the practical convenience of a modern home? Want a rural feel but need the ease and handiness of a central location? Look no further! Here it is! Wide, shady verandahs are only one of the features taken from the classic Queenslander style and integrated perfectly into this modern home. High raked ceilings give the main living area the spacious feel of an older era combined with the open plan of a current style. The modern kitchen has a pleasant rural outlook and features gas cooking, pantry and breakfast bar. Three spacious bedrooms all have built-in robes and private access to the verandahs. With office and a second living area, all the family has room to study and the kids have their own retreat. Finished off on 2,815 m2 land with an enjoyable rural backdrop and only a stroll to local school, shops, rail and bus transport, this is a property that gives plenty of space with loads of convenience and style. If you are after all this at a negotiable price of only $420,000 why wait? Call Norm James of Laurie Evans Real Estate Landsborough on 0412 480 227 or 5494 1488 for your personal inspection.
Wintergreen Way at Peachester
(it’s too late). • Grevilleas will be flowering away. Cutting flowers for inside the house, will also promote new growth and better plant health. • Prune edible fig trees. Be very vigorous – one-third can be cut off. Figs are only produced on new wood of the new season’s growth. Give them a good feed of general fertiliser. • It could be a few months before we get more good soaking rains and the drying September winds will suck the moisture from bare soil, so mulch your gardens to keep in the available water. • Dig up and divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution. • It’s a good month to start a sub-tropical fruit orchard – plant mango, pawpaw, avocado, custard apple, carambola and tamarillo. • Spray your flowering mangoes with Mancozeb or a copper-based fungicide to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Watch out for lawn weeds – especially bindieye, clover and flatweed (or cats ear). Vegetables Plant carrot, choko, zucchini, sweet potato, cucumber, eggplant, beans, lettuce, radish, spring onion, squash, tomato, beetroot, capsicum, kohl rabi, okra, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, silver beet, sweet corn, and watermelon. Flowers Plant alyssum, bedding begonia, cosmos, marigold, boronia, salvia, petunia, aster, amaranthus, celosia, phlox, portulaca, sunflower, torenia, zinnia, ageratum, gloxinia, impatiens, calendula, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, verbena, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, rudbeckia and snapdragon.

Contributed by Trevor Bertram In Round 7 of the Ladies’ Division 2 Pennant Competition last Wednesday, Glasshouse defeated Caboolture Lakes 40/33. The return match at Caboolture Lakes on Friday resulted in our ladies again winning 40/29. This week our ladies play their final rounds against Donnybrook at home on Wednesday and at Donnybrook on Friday. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Tony Verdonck and Anne Howard with two wins and a margin of 30. The runners-up, being the Winners of the Losers, were Brian Fogarty and Rob Scullion with the highest margin of +12 in game 2. In the Pennant competition, Division 4 played their final round against Bribie Island One (away) and were defeated 41/37. Kilcoy won the Division 4 flag for 2011. The Division 5 game against Bribie Island Two (at home) was postponed due to the wet conditions. The 2011 Spring Series of Business Bowls commences on Wednesday, September 14. The tournament will run for six Wednesday nights until October 19. The format is ‘Three Bowl Triples’ over 14 ends each night. The night starts at 6.00pm with a ‘sausage sizzle’ with play to commence at 6.30pm. The game finishes around 8.45pm. Businesses and organisations are invited to enter one or more teams. Family members and friends are welcome to participate in the game or just come along to watch. Nominations are now open and prospective teams may contact Terry Little on 0427 721 566 for further information or to nominate. Meals are available at the Club, overlooking the green, if you would like to watch the game while you dine. www.gcnews.com.au

When we think of the case of Daniel Morcombe and his disappearance, how tragic it is that the parents did not know all this time what happened to him. It seems there is now some resolution for the parents. It is tragic for the family when someone disappears and they do not know where the person is. I remember a fellow who used to live at Mt Morgan, near Rockhampton. His wife and dog went for a walk and they both disappeared. He has not heard from her since. They did not find her when search parties where sent out to look for her. This happened many years ago. This is hard to live with as there can be no closure for the person involved. They are always wondering what happened to their loved one. I am glad for the parents of Daniel that they are able to have some closure for their son. It has been a long time with no answers for them.
Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade AGM
In a similar way it is like this with God. He created this world and the human race; however Adam and Eve went astray and sinned. Jesus then came to the earth to bring us back to God. He took the sins of everyone upon himself through His death on the cross in order that those who accept this salvation could come back to the Creator God and Jesus himself. Until the death of Jesus, God in a sense was like Daniel’s parents. There was and is no closure. The next chapter with God is that He is coming again; to bring all those who accept his provision of the Jesus Death and resurrection for their salvation back to life again. Those who believe and have a relationship with him and are alive he takes them up to be with him forever where everything will be restored. This is then then God’s closure for the problems in the universe.
