ell, what could possibly be on my mind this Monday? No prizes for guessing – it’s the Maleny Show – and with only four sleeps to go until this big annual event I am definitely getting excited! I know we have been banging on about the show for weeks now in the paper, but as usual there is so much on offer for the whole family and, in light of the huge response from locals for our competition prize packs, I know I am definitely not alone in my enthusiasm for

concessions and students $10, primary school students $5, family passes $30. 8am to 11pm. See www.malenyshowsociety.org.au.

the show this year. And not surprisingly we will be bringing you plenty of photos from the show in next week’s edition. So, if you get a great photo of your family/friends enjoying the fun, then don’t forget to email me the photo with a caption for printing (please make sure that those in the photos are happy to feature in the paper and that the file size is at least 150kb). So now we just need to keep our fingers crossed for great weather. Going by the seven day forecasts, there is just possible showers forecast for 1-5mm of rain. This doesn’t sound like anything to be concerned about. So, if you are as show obsessed as I am, don’t forget to pull out the fourpage centre spread ‘Show Program’ and take it with you. See you at the Maleny Showground this weekend! Regards,

Local News Country Rocks the Mountain at the Maleny Show For those that head along to the Maleny Show each year you will know that it is a combination of the things that you have always loved about the show, whether that be the Dagwood dogs and fairy floss, the rides or the grand parade, but each year the Show Society also likes to include new elements as well. This year the show will have a much stronger offering at night with the introduction of ‘Country Rocks the Mountain’ with live country music from 5.30pm on both Friday and Saturday nights. Maleny based musician Col Finley has come on board to help organise the event and, with over 25 years of industry experience, he is excited to be putting together “something big!” “After talking with the show society members, we thought we would contact some more mates and put together a big entertainment program as a way of celebrating the 80th year milestone of the show,” Col said. The ‘Country Rocks the Mountain’ event will tie in with the fireworks on Friday night and the rodeo on Saturday, with performers set up on a main stage facing the pavilion from the main arena.

Planning a high energy family show, Col knows the secret to an awesome event is to build up an “electric atmosphere” and one of the ideas behind this event is to keep the crowds upbeat and excited around the traditional show drawcards of the fireworks and rodeo. Friday night will feature local talent, with the Col Finley Band (winners of independent band of the year at Tamworth Country Music Festival), Nellie Finley and Will Day performing. Saturday night will feature country music chart topper singer/songwriter Chris Staff and his band headlining along with eight-time Golden Guitar winner Luke O’Shea. ‘Diesel Town’ will also be reforming specially to play on the Saturday. These accomplished musicians are guaranteed to get the crowds jumping from late afternoon and to continue the fun atmosphere into the night. “Be prepared – it’s going to rock and it’s going to be loud!” said Col.

Rewarding coaching opportunity for Nathan By Sonia Clark Maleny man Nathan Dodd has recently been invited by Cricket Australia to be Senior Assistant Coach for the Australian Cricket Team for players with an intellectual disability in an international series against England and South Africa. Nathan will be working as a high performance coach and will travel with the team over to the UK in July where the competition will be played out in the north west county of Cheshire. The four week tri-nation tournament will be the first of its kind supported by the peak governing cricket boards of the three countries. Nathan said he is really exciting to be offered this position, particularly as this will be his first official role with Cricket Australia assisting a national team. “Personally I’m really looking forward to supporting these players represent their country,” he said. Currently in his third year studying Sports and Exercise Science at Sunshine Coast University and a cricket player himself for many years, Nathan’s long term goal is to be a professional high performance coach. While he has always had an interest in cricket, it was only a few years ago that he decided to follow his ambitions to develop his coaching skills. Since then he has steadily worked his way through various levels of accreditation and is currently about to complete his High Performance Level 3, which is an intensive

almost 12 month course offered by invitation only by Cricket Australia. Training is well underway and last month the entire team met for a training camp at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. “I really enjoy coaching,” Nathan said. “Being able to see people achieve their goals as individuals and at a team level is great and I love that I can encourage them and be part of helping people achieve their dreams.” Nathan’s work as a coach is a volunteer-based role and already local businesses like Hotel Maleny have thrown their support behind him – if you would like to help please email Nathan at doddyeagle@hotmail.com.

NBN towers not the problem According to Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson, the Sunshine Coast strategic plan is the problem, not NBN wireless broadband towers. Cr Rogerson was the lone voice who voted against rejecting the Eudlo tower, one of three development applications Sunshine Coast Council threw out which have been subsequently approved on appeal in the Planning and Environment Court. “The reasons I voted against refusing the Eudlo tower were simple. I’d approved towers to go in at Mapleton, Kenilworth, Gheerulla and Belli Park and each of those communities have been ecstatic with the improved internet they’ve now got,” Cr Rogerson said. “Under the ridiculous current planning scheme rules, we are just condemning other communities to falling further and further behind. “I’ve listened to the experts and I’m confident with the safety aspects of the technology. And I’m confident that the performance of the wireless broadband is only going to get better and better as new technological advancements are made.” Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay – who represents the community of Eudlo – clarified aspects of the recent tower decision. “It was agreed to approve the three applications with standard conditions for telecommunications facilities and some non-standard conditions,” she explained. “The non-standard conditions require the facilities to be built to allow consideration for

Call Craig on 0416 204 301

co-location of other telecommunication service providers in the future, they require the facilities to be of a non-reflective, galvanised finish to reduce the visual impact, and for Eudlo and Glass House Mountains there is a requirement for landscaping to provide screening of the ground level elements to reduce the visual impact at the ground level. “Please note that whilst I do not support this decision and stand strongly on the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme guidelines, this is now a decision of the courts. “I still believe the Hinterland people deserve a better outcome and will continue to lobby the Federal Government, however I recognise for many home based business and students this will be a welcomed outcome.” However, Cr Rogerson’s original stance now seems justified. “I could see that we were setting ourselves up for failure by strictly adhering to the current planning scheme requirements," he said. “Our communities were always going to be left behind if we blindly kept following the same paths, so the court's decision came as no surprise to me.” To rectify the situation, Cr Rogerson called for a report to be presented to council on amending the telecommunication facility code of the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme. From the report, Cr Rogerson hopes to see common sense prevail. “I want to see changes which will give Hinterland communities some certainty that they will be

Councillor Greg Rogerson able to receive their NBN broadband much much earlier than would have happened if we kept applying the current planning scheme guidelines." But Cr Rogerson may be waiting some time yet. When asked how the report is progressing and when the community can expect it to be presented to a council meeting, a council spokesperson was less than forthcoming. “Council can confirm the resolution to prepare a report to amend the telecommunication facility code is on the list of future items for further consideration and report to council.” ... straight from the Sir Humphrey Appleby handbook.

For the love of books Huddled around a table in the middle of Rosetta Books, clutching their diaries, a range of new novels and the occasional red wine, the dedicated and enthusiastic women behind Maleny’s annual boutique literary festival, the Celebration of Books Maleny, can be found. Brought together by their love of books, reading and writing, the festival’s coordinating team includes local booksellers, librarians, authors, artists, arts administrators, academics and teachers. According to local book artist Fiona Dempster, the planning is almost as fun as the event itself: “Working with this bunch of women is a delight – everybody just gets in and does what is needed – no fuss, no bother and lots of laughs!” This year the festival is organised around the theme of ‘Adventure and Misadventure’, and boasts an impressive range of events and special guests. There are poetry readings on the community precinct and gorgeous displays of rare first editions and original book illustrations in the local library, as well as a vibrant and engaging Big Book Club gathering on Saturday afternoon and a Sunday morning author forum featuring international crime writer Michael Robotham and ABC radio’s Kate Evans. Together with workshops and children’s activities, the weekend promises to offer something for everyone. As organisational psychologist Sue Collaro explains, “There are more to books than the stories between the covers: listening to authors discuss the starting place for their book, listening to readers respond and react to the stories they read. When you bring readers and writers together, it’s an exciting meeting place.”

caption With the event now in its sixth year, the women behind it are just as passionate as ever about making those connections and ensuring the festival supports the Hinterland town’s community of book lovers. For arts administration consultant Claire Booth, it’s a win-win situation. “I love reading and books, and I really enjoy planning with friends, especially where a glass of wine and a good laugh is the focus,” she said. “But most of all I love bringing people together in a true celebration of books, writing and reading. Celebration of Books brings all of that together. I am in my element!” So if you see the light on in Rosetta’s well after closing time, and hear lots of laughs and chatter, you’ll know what’s going on. It’s some seriously fun organisation of a seriously fun and diverse community event. The festival runs from the July 14 to 16. New dog breeding rules New state laws came into effect last week, targeting anyone giving away, supplying, selling or advertising dogs born after May 26, 2017. The changes are aimed to improve the welfare of dogs and puppies, targeting the much deplored operations of ‘puppy farms’ and backyard breeders. Giving away supplying, selling or advertising dogs born after May 26, 2017 is now illegal without a ‘supply number’ which can be used to identify the origin of the dog or puppy. The supply number can then be used to find information about the breeder using the new online Queensland Dog Breeder Register. People are urged to only buy dogs with a valid supply number whether they are searching for a dog at a pet shop, from a professional kennel, or through an advertisement. Significant penalties apply to people not having a supply number for animals they have bred or using another person’s number who hasn’t bred the animal. Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Bill Byrne said that previously there was no way to identify breeders.

“Now we will have a tool that we can build over time to address this gap and give people and family buying pets more information about the pet’s background so they know they are buying from a reputable breeder,” he said. The new laws will apply to regular and occasional breeders (including backyard litters) – with the specific exceptions for some working dogs. Registering for a supply number is quick, easy and free. Breeders will need to log their details on the new Queensland Dog Breeder Register within 28 days of their puppies being born. For more information about the new requirements, go to www.daf.qld.gov.au and search for ‘dog breeder regulation’. Anyone with concerns about the welfare of specific animals should report these to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625).

Glass House name to remain As part of a statewide electoral boundary review, the Electoral Commission of Queensland had proposed to change the name of Glass House electorate to become ‘Tibrogargan’, after the prominent mountain between Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum. After receiving submissions and objections, the Commission has decided in their final determination announced last Friday, that it became clear many

people felt the change was unnecessary and that it was done simply for the sake of change. A number of the suggestions also pointed out that the name Glass House is representative of all of the mountains in the region, whereas Tibrogargan is only named for one of them. While the Commission refuted this argument, they accepted that there was no pressing need to make this change at this point in time.

Glass House clothes swap Receive disaster alerts on again straight to your phone As part of World Environment Day held each year on June 5 we are celebrating by holding our annual Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre Clothes Swap on Saturday June 3 from 2pm to 4pm. Everyone is invited along to enjoy a clothes rummage and to trade in a reusable bag of preloved clothes for an opportunity to revamp your wardrobe. Bring along clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer wear and swap them for anything that takes your fancy. Clothes can be for women, men or children, just make sure all items are clean and in wearable condition. Any leftover items will be donated to local charities. We would encourage you to think about the environment and help make this a plastic free event by bringing along a reusable bag. New volunteers are welcome to help out with the event, just give the centre a call or pop in on week days between 9am and noon. Admission is only a gold coin. Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is located at 4 Ryan St, Glass House Mountains, opposite the post office. For more information contact the centre on 5438 7000.

When severe weather is approaching, flood waters are starting to rise or there’s another type of disaster on the Sunshine Coast, Sunshine Coast Council aims to provide important alerts to the community as quickly as possible. That’s why council has made it even easier to get the alerts you need, straight to your phone or tablet, with its CoastAlert notification service. The push notifications, linked to information on council’s award-winning Disaster Hub website, are a new feature of council’s SCCApp. To receive the alerts, simply download the SCCApp from the AppStore or Google Play. Emergency notifications will be automatically sent to smartphones and other mobile devices with the app installed. Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Chair, Mayor Mark Jamieson, said “Council’s Disaster Hub site has all the information needed to be prepared before, during and after a severe weather event – including weather warnings, road closures and evacuation centres.” “The new CoastAlert notification service provides automatic, important alerts for residents and visitors straight to their phones and smart devices to complement both the extensive information on Disaster Hub and the updates council provides via social media during a disaster. “To receive the alerts, it’s as simple as downloading the SCCApp and setting yourself up as a user. Nothing further is required.”

Reverend Jeanette joins the Parish of Maleny. By Sonia Clark Earlier this month Reverend Jeanette Jamieson was welcomed as the new Anglican parish priest to the Parish of Maleny which includes St Mary's in Montville, St Luke's in Kenilworth and St George's in Maleny. A commissioning Rev Jeanette service was held on Friday Jamieson May 5 with over 120 Priest-in-Charge guests attending, including Maleny Anglican community members, Parish parishioners from the three churches, representatives of the Uniting, Catholic and Presbyterian faith communities and Federal Member Andrew Wallace. The special service was the first commissioning for the new bishop of the region, Jeremy Greaves, and the event was also attended by a busload of Jeanette’s former parishioners from Kilcoy, Woodford, Bellthorpe and Mount Mee. As part of the service, two wardens from her previous parish ‘handed’ Jeanette over to three wardens of her new parish, and the evening concluded with a supper for all. Originally from Tasmania, Jeanette came to Queensland in her early twenties and spent many years living in Brisbane following her marriage. During this time she worked as a teacher for many years and she remembers that she and her

family always particularly loved coming up to visit Maleny and spending weekends at places like Maleny Lodge. “I feel extremely honoured and pleased to be the new parish priest for Maleny,” Jeanette said. “I’ve always loved this area and never dreamt that one day I would be able to come to live and work here.” She remained teaching until 2007 when her life purpose changed paths and she heeded her strong growing conviction to become a priest. Jeanette undertook a theological degree in Anglican Studies at St Francis College in Brisbane and was then appointed to Aspley/Albany Creek Anglican Church as Assistant Curate for three years. Following her experience in Brisbane, in October 2012 Jeanette was sent to the Kilcoy Anglican parish where she spent the following four and half years as parish priest. With news of the plans of Father Harry Reuss to retire from the Maleny parish, Jeanette felt a strong call to come to Maleny. Now living within the surrounding beauty of the area Jeanette feels that she has died and gone to heaven! As a full time parish priest, Jeanette’s role will include visiting parishioners and people in need and assisting in the myriad of activities involved in the busy parish community. She will be a point of contact for the Anglican Church in the area and will be involved in liaising with the community and other churches in the area. Preparing for the weekly Sunday services will also be a key part of

Church Wardens Jocelyn Bannister, June Allison and Jim Atkinson, Rev Jeanette Jamieson and The Rt Rev Jeremy Greaves (Bishop for the Northern Region) her new position. Presently St Mary's in Montville holds a 7.30am Sunday service followed by a 9am service at St George's in Maleny. St Luke's in Kenilworth also has Sunday service at 9am, however on Sunday May 28 the service was held at 11am so that Jeanette could attend and speak at all three parish services. “I am so looking forward to meeting people and becoming involved with the community,” Jeanette said. Personally, Jeanette has a keen interest in music and hopes to join one of the local choir groups and she also loves to read. If you would like to find out more about the Anglican Parish of Maleny or would like to make contact with Jeanette please call her on 0429 073 262.

Guest speakers share and inspire The Glasshouse Country Women’s Social Group had a very special guest last month when SeaFM’s Caroline Hutchinson came along to their meeting at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre to share some of her stories about her recent trip along the Kokoda Track. For those who know Caroline from her work on radio and her column in the Sunshine Coast Daily, you would be familiar with her warm, genuine and empathetic approach to others and this clearly shone through in the experiences she shared with the group on the day. She also gave an encouraging insight into the physical fitness and tolerance for conditions that you need to endure to do the trip, and she explained that the walk at Ngungun at Glass House Mountains and walking up Brandenberg Road at Mooloolah had featured in her training to tackle the very steep terrain of the Kokoda Track. At the group’s upcoming meeting on Wednesday June 14 they are really pleased to welcome back Craig Harmer (pictured left) as their guest. Craig is the owner of the Healthy Guru in Beerwah and is known for his abilities in spiritual development, releasing past patterning, life path direction and also tarot card reading. He will be giving a talk which will be followed by question time. If you haven’t been along to the group’s events before they would love to welcome you along from 12.30pm. The cost to attend is a $2 donation and please bring along a plate to share.

Hobby horses off and racing For the past few years the range of activities offered at the Maleny Show’s Small Farmers Tent has continued to expand to engage the imaginations of the smallest farmers of them all – the kids. This year Jess Wild, the co-ordinator of The Small Farmers Tent, came up with the concept of hobby horse racing – a creative way to both engage the local community and to create a free, fun way to run off a little bit of the excitement of coming to the show. “We love being able to expand our community partnerships, so I was looking for a group that might be able to create hobby horses for us and was hoping that they might also get enjoyment out of the project,” Jess said. “The team at Glasshouse Views Aged Care were wonderful and immediately offered their creative services.” The six hobby horses were made by Fred Dredge of the Glasshouse Country Menshed. These were then passed on to Glasshouse Views and a group of dedicated volunteers among the residents painted and decorated the hobby horses. “We love being able to offer families some fun ways of interacting with agriculture and our agricultural show,” Jess said. Kids both big and small will be able to throw their leg over a hobby horse and see how fast they can complete a novelty race course run over the two days of the Maleny Show.

Introducing Reanna Randall Reanna Randall is another locally based staff member who has spent over 20 years living in the Glass House Mountains area. A mother of four, Reanna is Assistant Educator in the school ready room and is currently completing her Diploma in Childcare Services from the Australian Institute of Early Childhood Studies. “I have always loved children and having four children of my own I feel like I have already had good hands on experience," said Reanna. “A couple of years ago I decided to pursue a career in childcare and return to doing something I feel that I’m really good at.” Reanna comes from an Indigenous background and part of her role at the Centre is to educate and encourage child friendly activities that incorporate the importance of Indigenous cultural heritage. With the support of the Centre, Reanna draws upon her cultural connections to incorporate activities for the children that familiarise them with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture such as painting, dreamtime stories and dancing. Through her background, Reanna has also linked the Centre to the only Indigenous Community Resource library in Queensland so that she can access additional learning resources for the children. Assisting with children aged between four and five, Reanna loves interacting with the children as they discover new things, learn and grow. “I am amazed at their ability at this age, as they are really engaged to learn and understand new

www.gcnews.com.au

things. They develop so quickly and it’s lovely to see how self-sufficient they are becoming and just how clever they are!” says Reanna. With our beautiful Queensland climate, outdoor play is a huge focus for the children and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about outside environments. Recently the children discovered a beetle and small lizard in their outdoor area and so there have been recent activities and discussions around the habitat and eating habits of these creatures. This is great example of the Centre’s focus of encouraging learning activities that lead on from the interests of the children. Reanna and Centre Co-ordinator Ange Hardey have been in discussions about an exciting community collaboration with the local environment group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network). Meeting with representatives of the group, staff members at the Centre are thrilled with the offer of help to establish their outdoor area with all local native plants and species. The idea is to create a sensory garden where the children can learn more about native plants species and bush tucker. “It’s really exciting to be part of this community partnership that will allow the children to discover more about native plants. They will be able to touch and smell everything in the garden and I am particularly looking forward to sharing more about bush tucker which is an important part of indigenous culture with the children,” said Reanna. All plants donated will be sourced from local GMAN nursery members and some of the edible plants that are being considered for the new garden are Midyin Berry, Davidson Plums and Lilly Pillies. To assist in educating the children about endangered species and to support the local

ecology, the Centre are also considering having Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines to help attract this rare butterfly species.

Centre news Our school-readiness children went to Beerburrum State School's open day on Thursday last week – it was fantastic! The teachers greeted us at the gate when we arrived and the children were able to participate in a variety of different experiences. Miss Anna provided lots of fun activities that the children really enjoyed. The children had fun developing their fine motor strength by milking a pretend cow. This involved squeezing milk out of a glove that was hanging from a string line. They also enjoyed horse racing and sack races, and were able to paint, use playdough and cut using scissors. Some children made finger puppets and used pipe cleaners to write their names. A really fun and educational visit!

Vintage Calendar

Locals were recently given the opportunity to bid for and win time with TV celebrities Todd McKenney and Cherie Barber who were at Maleny Manor last Wednesday, shooting the cover of the local charity Vintage Calendar Girls for 2018. The winners of the auction were Deborah Hammond and Kerry and Olivia Van Schyndel, all of whom are proud supporters of the Vintage Calendar Girls project, which raises funds for much-needed respite for Coast families battling through a rare cancer diagnosis. Behind the scenes, there was also a crowd of sponsors and supporters who all donated their time and services to help Deborah Hammond with Kerry and Olivia Van founder Misty Bland achieve Schyndel and celebrities Todd McKenney and her fundraising goals. Library News by the Maleny Library staff

What’s happening at Maleny Library? Did you know up to 90% of a child’s brain development happens in the first five years? The more you talk, read, sing and play with your child the more their brain responds. First 5 Forever is about working together as a community to spend time with our babies and children talking, reading, singing and playing. This universal family literacy program aims at creating stronger language and literacy environments for Queensland children before they start kindergarten or school. First 5 Forever is an initiative of the Queensland State Government and involves every public library across the state. As your child's first teacher you play an important role in building the foundation they require for future learning. Every day, take the opportunity to: • read and share books • sing songs, nursery rhymes and lullabies • talk to your child and expose them to new words • play together with blocks, puzzles or toys. Sunshine Coast Libraries offer a range of interactive sessions and resources to aid your child's development during their first five years, including Rhymetime and Storytime, Libraries on the Move (visits to parks and other venues by the mobile library for stories and fun), and the Toy and Music collections. At Maleny branch, Rhymetime is on every Friday at 9.30am and Storytime every Thursday at 9.30am. You can also borrow toys and music from the Maleny Branch. Hinterland Halls unite to celebrate 50th anniversary

The 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast is officially commemorated on August 1, and small halls scattered across the Sunshine Coast will be lighting up the hills to celebrate with a Festival of Community Halls. Throughout August, over eighteen halls will host a series of events and activities unique to each of their communities. The festival also highlights the important role halls have played in creating the social fabric of our region, and how they will continue to do so. Sunshine Coast Council plans to celebrate our identity, engage our community and showcase our history and future on the Sunshine Coast. Having received commemorative funding to undertake the project, Gheerulla Hall president Mary Ann Law initiated the festival plans. “With halls in our communities having such historical significance, we have the opportunity to celebrate and commemorate the people and places that have shaped and defined the Sunshine Coast,” she said. “Small halls have been integral to community life for over a century and communities today can learn of the importance of this type of activity to our wellbeing and social development as a community.” Events currently planned for the halls in Glasshouse Country and the Blackall Range include the launch of the event at the Mooloolah Hall on Friday August 4 which will feature a photographic exhibition of 50 Years of Mooloolah Memories. On Saturday August 5 there will be a historical show and rockabilly dance at the Obi Obi Hall and a Retro Market at the Mapleton Hall.

Wedding setup at Montville Village Hall At the Peachester Hall on August 11 there will be an ‘Inigo Jones and the Deluge’ Movie, Meal and Memorabilia evening, followed up on the Saturday with an evening celebrating ‘50 years of change’ From farm to café at the Montville Hall. On Saturday August 19 there will be a High Tea with a twist at the Landsborough Hall and a cabaret at the Eudlo Hall. The celebration will be rounded off on September 3 with a Spring Ball at the Glass House Mountains Hall. A website is being developed to not only highlight the month long celebrations, but to provide updated information on the activities held in over 28 local halls throughout the Sunshine Coast. Go to http://sunshinecoastcommunityhalls.com for information on the festival and follow them on Facebook. For any enquiries, or if you are interested in getting your hall involved, phone 0428 193 156.

Please donate for those in need Contributed by Ted Prickett If you have been to Beerwah IGA lately you may have noticed that they have a food a donation bin at the front for collection of non-perishable food items for the local Foodbank initiative. Store Manager, Rose Moana said, "We are proud to support the Glasshouse Country Anglican Church and Morris House in raising much needed supplies. As a local business IGA is about helping to support our local community." Morris house Neighbourhood Centre distributes food donated by the congregation of the GHC Anglican Church Community to those in need in the community. Ann Husband, the Secretary/Co-ordinator, advises that many of those being assisted, including children, are homeless and are either living in a car or wherever they can find.

"We urgently need cans of hearty soup, meals in a can, cans of tuna or salmon. Unfortunately, a lot of our clients have no means of heating or cooking food and many simply eat the food cold,” Ann Husband with she said. Rose Moana "Morris house has no funding for emergency relief and we rely on donations to enable us to help people. “We are extremely grateful to Beerwah IGA for allowing us to put a container at their supermarket for donations of food. “We hope that the shoppers at Beerwah IGA will be generous in helping us to help those less fortunate,” Ann said.

Change lives – become an adult literacy volunteer If you would like to help people develop their literacy and numeracy skills, apply before June 12 to complete the Sunshine Coast Libraries’ Course in Adult Literacy Volunteer Tutoring. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries have provided free literacy training to adults, with the dedicated assistance of trained volunteers, for the last 28 years. “The Adult Literacy Program has assisted a large number of adults between 15 and 76 years of age in our community who have difficulty with every day, functional literacy,” Cr McKay said. “They include school leavers, parents, grandparents, workers, unemployed, and people with physical or intellectual disabilities, migrants and many others who, for a variety of reasons, may be prohibited from participating in

activities that involve reading, writing, speaking, numeracy and basic digital literacy. “The adult literacy staff assess the prospective student’s needs, interests, skills and goals to enable successful matching with a volunteer tutor. “The tutor then works on an individual program with the student, for approximately three hours a week, in a library or a community venue. “Tutors receive ongoing support from the staff with students and programming lessons.” The next course starts on Monday, July 17 at Nambour and includes a weekly 3.5 hour session over a 10-week period. Closing date for applications is Monday June 12. For more information, head to council’s library website, call the Adult Literacy team on 5499 5414 or email adult.literacy@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. www.gcnews.com.au

Lots of land ... so why so close? Country living ... green vistas, abundant wildlife, room to move, space between you and the neighbours ... idyllic living in an idyllic landscape. According to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, development in an area should be reflective of the setting in which those developments are contained. People buying into urban areas are under no misapprehension that the neighbours house will be close to the boundary – sometimes even on the boundary. They take it for granted that there may be new buildings, such as a shed, garage or extension, next door which will similarly abut their boundary fence and overlook their pool, bedroom window or outdoor living area. That’s what urban living involves. So you would expect that to escape the overshadowing, overlooking and lack of privacy of the urban landscape, it would be safe to move to the country. That living on rural residential land would afford you some peace of mind. Think again is the advice of one local resident. James lives with his wife on 5000sq.m of rural residential land in North Maleny. They built their dream home in 2009 but were surprised in 2011 when a new house was built three metres from their boundary and six metres from their living space. Gone was their vista over the green rolling hills, gone was their privacy, gone was what they thought rural residential lifestyle was supposed to be ... space between you and the neighbours. Then more recently, an extension next door, this time less than three metres off the boundary boxed them in even further. And they received no notification from Sunshine Coast Council that the work was going to happen. “First thing we knew about the position of the house and then later the extension was when the trees were cleared and the pad levelled,” explained James. Making enquiries to council, James discovered that under the planning scheme, structures up to 8.5m high are allowed to be built 3m off the boundary fences on rural residential blocks. His grievance isn’t with the neighbours – what they did was perfectly allowable. James is dirty on the Council for having such an impractical

16

planning scheme setback, as well as no requirement to notify neighbours of these types of developments. “A mere three metre setback is ludicrous,” James said. “That’s less than the length of a Mini-Minor, where a two and a half storey building can be built. “There’s no way that this setback can meet the outcomes which the planning scheme states. The scheme states that a dwelling is not to adversely impact upon a neighbouring premise having regard to such things as overshadowing, privacy and overlooking, views and vistas, and building massing and scale as seen from the neighbouring premises. “How is the three metre setback in rural residential areas – where land space isn’t critical – supposed to be consistent with the ideals of a rural lifestyle? I may as well still be living sardinestyle in town. “And Council has no requirement to inform neighbours if a development application is lodged which is self-assessable. There are even no documents available to view on what the development is likely to be. “And if you want the view them, you have to go through the Right To Information process, by which time the building is most likely done and dusted. “As a neighbouring resident you have no rights at all in these situations. You are totally excluded from the process and the very things that you value – and make your property valuable – about rural living can be destroyed by the stroke of the pen of a distant private certifier with no regards to whether the development achieves, or otherwise, council’s desired rural lifestyle outcomes.” James is keen for others in rural residential areas to be aware of these planning provisions. “Don’t think that your privacy and lifestyle is protected. Council’s planning scheme makes a mockery that.” Nearby local councils seem to have a better approach. Moreton Council, 4.5 metres setback; Noosa Shire, six metre setback; Redland City, 10m setback (under 2 hectares) or 20m setback (over two hectares); Somerset Council, 10m setback.

James would like to see the Sunshine Coast Council amend their planning scheme to provide a greater separation between dwellings. “I’ve spoken with the local councillor, I’ve spoken with the local State Member, I’ve written to the Local Government and Planning Minister Jackie Trad, I’ve written to the Speaker of the House Peter Wellington, I’ve written to the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk (still awaiting a reply) and I’ve met with council’s planning officers – but there seems an overall unwillingness to change anything. “Council have said that no changes will be made to the planning scheme, but would not provide any plausible reasons why. All the planning officers gave as an explanation was that ‘all blocks in Queensland are different’. That doesn’t even make sense. “Even if they kept the three metre setback, but included a proviso that a new structure had to be a certain distance – say 15 or 20m – from an existing structure. That would at least retain the rural characters they say the planning scheme is protecting.” When asked why James thought that council were reluctant to make such a simple change, he was convinced it’s budgetary. “By having the smallest setback possible, council don’t have to get involved in assessing applications, as they are handled by a private certifier. A larger setback means that more people would apply for exemptions, making more work for council, meaning more funding would have to be allocated. “To anyone who lives on rural residential land, please be aware that you have no say if someone wants to build an 8.5m house, building, shed or structure three metres from your boundary, overlooking your pool, barbeque area, bedroom window, shadowing your outdoor deck or blocking your view of the landscape. “But a simple change to the planning scheme will stop that from happening to others.” If you’re on rural residential and think a change is needed to protect your lifestyle, James asks that you let your local councillor know – Jenny McKay, Rick Baberowski or Greg Rogerson. We’d like to hear your thoughts – send a letter to us by emailing editorial@gcnews.com.au or submitting it online at www.gcnews.com.au.

Community Group

Updates

Out with the old and in with the new

Contributed by Viki Blaik The Peachester Rural Fire brigade recently took possession of a new Isuzu fire appliance. This vehicle replaces the old Peachester 51, which has given many years of service to the Peachester community. The Isuzu has all mod cons, with a water capacity of 1800 litres, and crews have familiarised themselves with the new pump systems on recent controlled burns and fire mitigation exercises. The brigade is entering an exciting future. New members have joined and there is progress on the fire station front, albeit there have been some obstacles. The Management Committee wishes to thank the residents of Peachester for their overwhelming support in signing a petition for the siting of the fire station near the 'Old Dip' site on the Beerwah Kilcoy Road. Over 600 signatures were obtained which reflects the support and desire of the community for this station to proceed and succeed.

Maleny CWA are off to the show

The work of the Maleny Branch of the CWA will be featured in the Small Farm Tent at the Maleny Show from 10am to 2pm each day. There will be displays to show the many facets of our community work including our Country Kitchens Program. There will be food demonstrations, food art for the children and, at 11.30am on Friday, a question and answer time when the Girl Guides will feature what they have learnt from their workshops. We will talk about why we joined QCWA, what we love about it and what we have gained from our experiences and we will invite ladies to join our wonderful organisation.

Family History Focus Contributed by Helen Page For our next meeting on June 4, the Peachester History Committee is having a 'Family History Day'. Members are delighted to welcome special guests Ann and Tony Swain from Queensland Family History Society, and we are looking forward to Ann’s talk on the topic 'Family History Research – old and new techniques'. Ann started researching her family’s history in 1975 and was a founding member of the Queensland Family History Society. She taught senior biology for 38 years, after graduating from UQ, majoring in Genetics and Botany. She has been secretary and president of QFHS, has served in many roles in that and other family history organisations, currently coordinates the QFHS Research Team, and is co-convenor of the QFHS DNA Special Interest Group. Ann

Ann at the Beerburrum Soldier Settlement Centenary, November 2016 has published numerous articles in family history journals, has given advice on radio, and is a regular and popular guest speaker. The PHC meeting is at Peachester Hall, from 11am. Visitors are welcome, and please bring a contribution for the shared lunch. Members and visitors please note: You are invited to bring examples of your family research for display and discussion, and of course have your questions ready. This may be a chance to find a way past those obstinate “brick walls”!

Budget under the microscope at Maleny Contributed by the Labor Sunshine Coast Hinterland Branch The annual community post-budget forum, recently hosted by Labor candidate for Tibrogargan Brent Hampstead at the Maleny

Brent Hampstead with Jim Chalmers

Neighbourhood Centre, saw an audience of over 50 locals listen to Shadow Minister for Finance, Dr Jim Chalmers explain the 2017 Federal Budget, and Labor’s alternative. Of particular concern to Dr Chalmers was the budget’s failure to address the linked issues of low wages growth, rising underemployment, and housing affordability. A restoration of education spending was central to the Labor alternative outlined by Dr Chalmers. “With Australian workers now changing jobs on average every 3.3 years, a commitment to providing adequately funded life-long learning opportunities is essential,” said Dr Chalmers. Dr Chalmers was tested by a number of insightful questions from the audience, with topics raised included the NDIS, rail infrastructure funding, and incentives for small business.

Lions have a busy month

Contributed by Bob Banner May was a busy month for the Beerwah Lions Club, beginning with the Lions’ can collection where 317 kilos of empty cans were collected and sent off for recycling. Residents bring their empty cans into the Lions’ stand at the bottom end of Mill Park in Beerwah on the first Saturday of every month between 8.30am and 11am and the Lions pay out fifty cents for every kilo brought in. The club also ran a successful barbeque at Bunnings Caloundra, raising money for local community needs. At the dinner meeting Lorraine Wise, assisted by

husband Mike, was the guest speaker. Mike and Lorraine, who are both members of the Lions group, spoke of their recent travels around Mike and Lorraine Australia and the world. Lorraine has recently produced a book titled ‘Fingers Crossed Across Australia’. It’s a quality publication that covers their travels around the outback and the wildlife they encountered on the way. The book is for sale with profits going toward Breast Cancer support.

Bulldogs the footy tipping winners

By Lea Parkes In July last year Kyra Quinn, the First Aid Coordinator from the Beerwah Bulldogs, got in contact with GC&M News to see if we would write a story about the club’s upcoming fundraising event. Kyra explained the huge costs associated with providing the first aid requirements for the club and they needed to raise funds to keep the costs down, particularly for the parents of the junior players. One of the items on Kyra’s wish list was to have a defibrillator at the grounds so in an emergency they wouldn’t have to wait for an ambulance to respond to a call. Having now met Kyra, I realised that she was truly committed to her role – and her passion, and some of her positivity, must have rubbed off on me. That meant that, this year, when our State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell contacted us about the idea for a ‘Pip the Pollie’ footy tipping competition as a fundraiser for our local community, I had a light bulb moment. Well, as footy tipping is all about rugby league and as there is only one rugby league club across the Glasshouse Country and Maleny area, I suggested that the obvious choice for a club to benefit would be the Beerwah Bulldogs.

Beerwah Senior’s President Kurt Quinn, First Aid Officer Peter Jennings holding the club’s new defibrillator and GC&M News Business Manager, Greg Brown Brownie and I recently headed along to the Bulldogs training night and handed over the $2,750 cheque which will just about cover the purchase cost of the ‘Top of the Range’ defibrillator that the club has purchased. So it looks like while Brownie’s personal footy tipping hasn’t gone as well as he would like it, he was really pleased that the club and all its members have ended up the real winners from our footy tipping promotion. And sadly, as Brownie had the misfortune of being born in NSW, he is also a ‘Blues supporter’ … so it looks like he might be in for another footy-related disappointment with State of Origin now upon us.

Thanks to the following for for donations of wonderful raffle prizes: Ben Messina Landscapes, RACV Noosa, Vivienne Wallace from Fudgettes, Noosa River and Canal Cruises, Caloundra Cruises, Amarashakti Day Spa Landsborough, Serenity in Home Beauty, Mary Kelly from Good Mood Food, Nina’s Soy Candles, Jaylee’s Living Gifts and Varlee’s Cleaning, Abra and Anne Cartmell and Carol Kazimir and all those who provided such beautiful food.

Glamorous Peachester ladies enjoying the high tea

Chappy D from Beerburrum State School recently organised a paper plane competition that was run over two lunch breaks. Students could purchase and make their planes, decorating them with stickers and adding paper clips for extra balance. Chappy D had a range of obstacles where the students could try to fly their planes through targets, land them in hoops and even try to land them in a hangar. But the winners of each age group were the ones who could fly their planes the furthest. All students agreed it was a lot of fun and Chappy D has promised to run the competition again at our upcoming sports day.

Beerwah State High School’s Beerwah Dance Company (BDC) recently had a very successful day at the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod. It was a long

and exhausting day for the dancers, however they all showed commitment, enthusiasm and teamwork. The fantastic work of the Junior Company saw them receive a second and fourth place for their routines, alongside the Senior Company who received an outstanding first, third and three highly commended. Miss Rossberg and Miss Griffiths are exceptionally proud of all the students and would like to thank all the students, parents and staff who consistently show support for BDC throughout the Eisteddfod season.

Re: Refugees

I saw a letter on refugees by Ivan Koch of Maleny (GC&M News May 17) in which he said, "I would like to see help given to refugees to stay where they are and help fix the problems in that country." Sounds an interesting solution. But when you consider Syria, for example, his solution pales into ridiculousness. Let’s take the Yardzi people, population of northern Syria – the young men killed and women taken for sex by ISIS. How do you “fix” that? The UN says that in what it terms “hard-to-reach” areas of Syria, some 500,000 are besieged. The towns of Aleppo, Deir al-Zour, Zabadani, Madaya, Mosul, Foua, Kefraya, Ghouta, Homs, Darayya and more are besieged from both sides and comprehensively or sometimes partially destroyed. Russian and Syrian fighter aircraft and bombers besiege them and sometimes US strike planes also bomb, destroying more resources, hospitals and community buildings. These are quotes from the BBC News: "Snipers in the city have targeted and killed civilians seeking to escape, including children", it says, "and children die of hunger there.” A resident of Madaya said, "People here have started eating earth because there's nothing left to eat," he said. "Grass and leaves have died because of the mounting snow." He described the lack of medical facilities for the sick and vulnerable as "terrifying". "Citizens are dying. They're eating stuff off the ground. They're eating cats and dogs," an activist whose family is in Madaya told the BBC. According to the UN, more than a million are injured and over 12 million Syrians – half the country's prewar population – have been displaced from their homes. Many families have lost half of more of their loved ones. How realistically does a refugee stay there and "fix the problems" under conditions of a seven year all-out war, with such bombing and killing? Richard Giles Conondale

Internet issues

I live at Peachester and I am wondering why I am unable to get an internet connection at an affordable price. I have tried a number of times to get a ADSL port from the Peachester telephone exchange just to be told there are none available. Then I was told there were some available so I signed up just to wait eight days and to get a letter from my provider to say they got a letter from Telstra informing them that there were none free. This bit takes the biscuit: I heard an old house www.gcnews.com.au

You Said It

was sold and the people who bought it requested the phone service not be cancelled and they would take over the service with the ADSL connection. This shows you how hard it is to get ADSL in Peachester and, to let you know, I have lived in this house for 32 years. I have been told to contact my federal member as NBN is coming, so I have contacted my federal member. His reply was that I should contact my local council member and ask why they have stopped the NBN towers in their local area and the local council member said it has nothing to do with him, it's the federal members fault. Just to let you know, NBN is earmarked for the Peachester area for late 2020, if ever. I was under the belief that Telstra were to keep up the phone infrastructure until NBN was in place, so why are they not upgrading the Peachester exchange with more ADSL ports? I have noticed on the web that some rural areas have complained about the lack of ADSL ports in their area and the Commonwealth Government went into melt down to fix their concerns. I would like others who are frustrated by the same problem to put their concerns to our federal members and see what they can do. Neville Case Peachester

in this area for the past 28 years. We have seen the place go from a sleepy little country town to a buzzing country town. The accident on Steve Irwin Way contributed to the amount of traffic that was at this intersection on that day. It does get very busy there at school times as well and drivers get impatient and that is what causes accidents. My mother was a passenger in one of the cars involved in the accident at this intersection on that day. She is 82 years old. She sustained a broken sternum and bruising, but it could have been a lot worse. Why is it that the government or Main Roads wait until there is a fatality before something is done? They need to start spending money on the roads around here, especially with the amount of new estates that are going in. The old roads are not getting fixed. A quick repair job, ‘she’ll be right mate’ – it’s not good enough. I am so thankful for the people and the ambos that were there with my mother on that day. And a big thanks also to Glasshouse Country Care for all their help over the past two weeks. Cheryle Campbell Beerwah

Unwanted stamps?

I am on the lookout for used stamps to supplement my philatelic hobby. Sadly most of the contacts I had gained from previous requests have fallen by the wayside. With the help of many kind Australian folk I have managed over the past four years to put together a substantial collection but there is the need to keep up to date with recent issues. If any businesses or folk have unwanted used stamps I will be pleased to receive them, not only for my own collection, but to donate excess stamps to local charities, etc. Thanking you in advance for your consideration. Please send to Mrs Betty L. Burrows, 6 Marney Way, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex. CO13 9NZ, United Kingdom. B Burrows Essex

Something needs to be done

Re the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road Beerwah, I agree with the points made by Sheila Williams of Beerwah in her recent letter to GC&M News. My family and I drive this road every day and have done for the past nine years. We have lived

A recent edition of the GC&M News announced the commencement of the Bruce Highway upgrade costing $929 million and while this is a laudable project we are told that the Aura development in South Caloundra and the Harmony scheme in Palmwood are providing housing for 70,000 residents most of whom will be working to the south. One can only wonder at the highway congestion this will bring and it can only be alleviated by the construction of the long-proposed rail extension from Beerwah to Maroochydore as shown for many years in the local street directory. Of course this will be contingent on the duplication of the Beerburrum to Beerwah section which is presently before State Government for consideration but at least it's a start! So, no more prevaricating, this is too important an issue to just put on the back burner for future generations to rue. Peter Watts Glass House Mountains

We need traffic lights

I endorse Sheila William’s letter in last week’s edition, calling for traffic lights to be installed on the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Beerwah State School. It is not just when traffic is diverted from Steve Irwin Way due to an accident that traffic is a problem, this intersection is also dangerous particularly around school drop off and pick up times and at the weekends when there are a lot of visitors to the area. I have seen a number of accidents and lots of near misses at this intersection and I hope we do not have to wait for action on this until someone is killed or seriously injured. Barb Bowler Beerwah

Jobs for the yard in June

• It’s your last chance to prune hydrangeas back almost to ground level. Use the cuttings to propagate new plants. • Citrus leaves may develop a yellow colour. This is because the cool soil slows down nutrient uptake through the roots. You can boost them with a foliar spray of a fertiliser with trace elements. • Pinch out the tips of your sweet pea plants to make them bush up and produce more flowers later. • Lift dahlia tubers, brush the soil off and store them in sawdust to prevent them from rotting. Split up old clumps of daylilies. Replant them around the garden or give some to a friend or neighbour. • Mound soil around potatoes already growing, to prevent pest attack and to stop the surface-growing potatoes from going green. • Cut the old stems of asparagus down. Top-dress them with well-rotted manure or compost and mulch. • Bindi-eye is starting to appear so hand removal is easy or spray with an appropriate herbicide. • Rose planting can be done this month. Plant them in a sunny position in soil enriched by compost and animal manure, and a little bit of rose plant fertiliser will help. Vegetables - Plant Asian greens, asparagus, beans, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chilli, cucumber, endive, garlic, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnip, peas, potato, radish, rhubarb, shallots, silver beet, spinach, spring onion, sweet potato, turnip and tomato. Flowers - Plant alyssum, amaranthus, bedding begonia, boronia, Californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, cineraria, cosmos, dianthus, gerbera, gaillardia, gazania, Iceland poppy, kale, lobelia, marigold, pansy, petunia, phlox, portulaca, roses, snapdragon, statice, verbena, viola and zinnia.

Make Maleny your garden destination

In days of old, small local schools were scattered all over our landscape – a reflection of the closeness of communities back then and the challenges of the transport routes and technologies. A horse would only carry you so far before it decided that enough was enough. So it’s a rare privilege to be able to take a look around one of these historic sites as part of the Gardening on the Edge weekend (June 10 and 11). There are six gardens open overall – three at Mapleton, two at Maleny and Pattemore House in North Maleny. One of the Maleny gardens is an old school house property, and to top it off, the garden was previously judged as the Grand Champion Sunshine Coast garden ... twice. Towering trees dominate the garden, with its commanding views of the Glass House Mountains and Moreton Bay. The garden contains drifts of perennials, camellias and azaleas. There is a relaxing tree fern walk, and a rainforest area under the huge fig tree features bromeliads, cordylines and dracaenas. Near the front of the garden is the original road with deep wheel ruts from the buggies taking children to the school. This has been transformed into a peaceful creek bed with banks of iris, daylilies, agapanthus and hippeastrums. For those who have a smaller block but still aspire to achieve horticultural bliss (or at least a respectable looking garden), one of the Maleny properties will be right up your alley. This town garden shows what can be done with a small block. A large variety of well-maintained plants gives plenty of interest. This garden was part of the Festival of Colour for many years and began 40 years ago with a large mandarin tree and a lawn. Over the years it has become a small cottage type garden. Most of the plants have a story as they have come from someone’s garden. The six gardens are open for public viewing over the Gardening on the Edge weekend of June 10 and 11, with tickets only costing $5 for one garden, $12 for three gardens or $20 for all six. Tickets can be purchased at the spectacular Gardening Expo held at the Maleny Showgrounds over the whole weekend. Entry to the expo is free and over 30 specialty stalls will showcase plants and various garden products and services. Tickets can also be purchased at the gardens themselves – garden locations and maps will be available at the garden expo. The weekend is a fundraiser organised by the Maleny Garden Club. For more details see www.malenygardenclub.org.

Bush food banter with Karen Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery

Warrigal Greens

Looking for an evergreen, lush green for your veggie garden? Our local native spinach, or Warrigal Green, is a fantastic plant. Vigorous and bountiful, it’s a great addition to your garden and kitchen table. Warrigal Greens, Tetragonia tetragonioides, is a well-known edible native plant. It grows along the eastern coastline of Australia and New Zealand. Enjoyed by indigenous peoples, it was also a welcome addition to the diet of early Europeans sick with scurvy. Joseph Banks took seeds back to Kew Gardens and it became the first Australia food plant to be cultivated abroad. This hardy groundcover is easy to grow and rich in antioxidants. Plant in full sun or part shade areas. Great companion plant around fruit trees. It can be quick growing so allow space. Warrigals grow readily from seed, so once you have introduced it to your garden, you will have a constant supply. Warrigal Green leaves need to be cooked to break down the oxalates – quick blanching is all that is required. We use these greens regularly in our cooking – blended with macadamia, olive oil and garlic to make a delicious pesto, added to stir-fries and soups or combined with feta cheese to make fantastic spanakopita. Karen and her husband Spencer Shaw run Forest Heart Nursery in Maleny. Forest Heart concentrates on local native plants, bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit trees, non-invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden and ecology education, books, DVDs, art and so much more. Five Chairs of Prayer In my recent devotion I came across part of an article by Dean Trune in ‘Living Out Our Passion for God’. I enjoyed the journey we all face in life, the need to pray to a god who loves us. Chair One: My attitude towards prayer is that it is not important. I have no motivation to pray and no desire to pray. Nothing is happening in my life in regards to prayer. Chair Two: My attitude towards prayer is that it is optional. I have a motivation and a desire to pray but my prayer life is so sporadic and inconsistent that it only produces guilt and frustration. Chair Three: My attitude towards prayer is that it is important. I am praying everyday but my prayer life is shallow and self-centred. It is all about me and what God can do for me as

opposed to how God can work through me. There is not much of an intimate relationship with God being developed because I am doing all the talking and I am simply asking Him for things. Chair Four: I take a quantum leap to chair four from chair three. My attitude towards prayer has grown from being important to being necessary. I am starting to develop a relationship with God that has some depth. It is a matter of trust. Chair Five: My attitude towards prayer is that it is critical for an individual. I have now taken on the ministry of intercession where I am taking other people’s requests to God on their behalf. This is not a “once in a while” thing but it has become a daily ministry of intercession for me. (Col 4:2 NIV) Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Love affair with the mountains Rob Hill unashamedly loves the Glass House Mountains. He loves their moods, their beauty, their omniscience, their drama. He loves to watch the light playing on their contours, and the mists shrouding them in sublime secrecy. Over the twenty-something years that he has lived in Glasshouse Country he has taken many photographs of those monoliths. Over the month of June, Rob will be showing a small selection of his collection of photographs at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah. Come along to the opening at 6.30pm this Friday, June 2, and have a chat to Rob about the beauty of the Glass House Mountains, or about technostuff like focal lengths and exposure times. If you can't make it then, the aptly named exhibition 'Glass House Mountains' will hang from May 28 to July 2 – make sure you get along to see it while sipping one of Steve’s wonderful coffees! To find out about holding an exhibition at Vianta, call Red Door Arts on 0412 936 361.

A Man Called Ove

Music The Magic Flute has it all Wonderful tunes, a naïve hero, a sweet heroine, dastardly villains, and a loveable bird catcher are all part of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ which will be presented by the Maleny Singers and Performing Arts Orchestra in June. Mozart’s last and favourite opera, ‘The Magic Flute’, is the second mostperformed opera worldwide, and with good reason. This light masterpiece has varied and spritely orchestration throughout, a dazzling variety of vocal pieces, and delightful characters. The first scene sees much amusement as the three Queen’s ladies fight over the handsome Prince Tamino, who they have just rescued from a dragon. Enter Papageno, the clown/everyman character who tries to take credit for killing the dragon, but the ladies literally lock his lips. The Queen of the night appears to be a loving mother, distraught because her daughter Pamina has been kidnapped by the supposedly evil Sarastro. Tamino promises to rescue the daughter Pamina, while our sweet heroine appears, tormented by Monostatos, then relieved by Papageno and his magic bells. Dancers from bDifferent Dance Academy will contribute to this delightful scene, and to many others during the opera. Enter Sarastro, the noble Father figure, and chief priest of the Temple of Wisdom. Sarastro comforts Pamina, and chastises the lustful Monostatos. Act 2 opens with a march of the priests. The Queen’s ladies test Tamino, who passes muster, but Papegeno comically fails. Monostatos fails to seduce Pamina. The Queen of the Night reveals herself as a real baddy by demanding that Pamina murder Sarastro. Tamino and Pamina undergo their major trials by fire and water, protected by a magic flute. The Queen of the night and her retinue creep onstage, but the evil ones are cast out into darkness. Tamino is welcomed into the brotherhood, the lovers are united, and all is forgiven, in a rousing finale for full chorus, soloists, and orchestra. Performances are on Saturday June 17, at 6.30pm, Sunday June 18 at 2pm, Saturday June 24 at 4pm, and Sunday June 25 at 2pm at the Maleny Community Centre. Tickets can be booked on www.trybooking.com/280878 or by visiting the Maleny Visitor Centre. www.gcnews.com.au

This quirky film based on the best-selling novel from Sweden explores the bittersweet humour behind the quintessential grumpy old man from next door and the story behind his irascible behaviour. Classification is PG and the duration 116 minutes. Screening is by the Maleny Film Society this Saturday, June 3, at 7.15pm in the Maleny Community Centre, following catered dinner by Spaghetti Junction, accompanied by a drinks bar and tea/coffee stand with homemade slices. Doors open at 6pm. The story of Ove is a heart-warming tale, carrying a reminder that the best moments of life are those which are shared. It’s a story that could happen anywhere in the world. A boisterous family moves in next door to an old grump, and young people flatten his letter box, earning his understandable ire. Further exploration of Ove’s long life explains much of his attitude and sparks an unlikely alliance, but director Hannes Holm always maintains the edge of comedy. Members of the Maleny Film Society may pre-book on-line or via the Maleny information Centre. New members may also join on-line. Non-members can purchase tickets at the door. An extra treat on Saturday evening comes in a short film entitled 'Figura', from the Gympie Heart of Gold Festival. For more information, check the website www.malenyfilmsociety.info.

Sport Visitor hits a hole-in-one

Maleny Golf Club is celebrating the first hole in one by a visitor during a competition since the 9-hole public course opened in July 2015. Long-time member of the Nanango Golf Club Aida Lavings, 73, was playing in the club’s inaugural Ladies Invitational recently when she aced the par 3 third hole from 140m, off the red markers, to score her first hole-in-one. “I just used my driver off the tee like I always do and hit what was the perfect shot,” said Aida. “I’ve never had a hole-in-one so I’m very thrilled and excited.” Remarkably, Aida and fellow Nambour Ladies Veteran Shirley McDougal, 82, were playing alongside Maleny member Liz Mellish who aced the same hole in October last year to become the first woman to score a hole-in-one on the course during a competition. Maleny Golf Club President Max Whitten said this was also the first Ladies Invitational at Maleny. “We were able to showcase the course and by all accounts we acquitted ourselves very well in hosting and catering for a field of 63 players on the day,” Dr Whitten said. The odds of an amateur golfer achieving a hole in one are estimated to be around 12,500-to-1. Visitors are welcome at Maleny Golf Club, so too new members with the new membership year commencing on November 1. Aida Lavings extracting her ball from the cup on the par 3 third hole

Friday there were five rinks of Scroungers and the winners on their respective rinks were Curley Petersen, Ian Chatterton, Relma Godfrey, Joe Walters and Steve Lawrence. None of the members whose numbers came out for a Sponsors’ Prize were present so no prizes were claimed. The lucky Money Board winners were Joe Walters and Lorraine Kirkland. This week there will be Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening Scroungers Friday and some Championship matches. Also there will be a State of Origin gettogether on Wednesday evening. I have been writing the bowls notes for the last 16 plus years but this is my final effort as my wife and I are relocating to Bundaberg. We have lived in various places over the last 50 plus years and I have been a member of a large number of a variety of sporting clubs. The Maleny Bowls Club stands out as one of, if not the best club I have been fortunate enough to be associated with. The friendly atmosphere and the willingness of members to volunteer to help out is quite astounding. Finally, the send-off for my wife and myself was thoroughly enjoyed and much appreciated by both of us. Our best wishes to the club for the future, I will certainly miss being there.

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails played so well on the match day. The first 2 sets that I played in we were both 4-4, but we just couldn’t win the last two games. We won the last 2 sets, but that was it. 29-42. The tennis is always enjoyable against the TTs – maybe one day? Whistlers played at Maroochydore, against Meteors. It started with tie-break set and all the sets were so tight. Good tennis, but it took longer than usual and we were exhausted when we finished. It was so close but we were only few games short. Score was 34-37 games, 4 sets all. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Donna Kuskopf. The Wildcats fought hard to come away with a win against the Nambas No Faults. Witta put on exceptional tennis weather. Thanks to Libby, Annie, Stacey and Jenie for your sportsmanship and sense of humour. In ideal conditions for tennis the Witta Wompoos defeated Division 2 front runners Nambas by 8 sets and 61 games to 4 sets 49 games. Great performances again by our strong ladies pairing of Paula and Liz backed up by some impressive play by the Wompoos men, Bob, Jim, Haydyn and Ernie. Wompoos next match is against Gympie on Sunday June 25 and it could be another tough one. The Wikings travelled to Nambour to play some Menaces on a fantastic winter Sunday. Thoroughly enjoyable tennis played by all. 50/50 all day and we look forward to hosting the next match at Witta. The Wikings winning streak continued, up by four sets. Despite a few breakdowns and legs slapping, we all know who finished the day as champ. Thanks to Glenno, No John No, Mike, Angry Andrewson, Maree and Lobster. The Wonders headed north to Gympie to take on Murgon last Sunday. In the end it was a fairly comfortable win 9/3 sets to the Wonders but Murgon put up stiff resistance in many sets only losing a couple in tight tie breaks. The competition is tight across the board and it will be an interesting season with many contenders for the playoffs. Thanks to Karien for filling in, Rob on debut and the usual suspects who gave their all! Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. All welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www. wittatennis.com.au. www.gcnews.com.au

Bee Gees Football Club

Contributed by Kevin Leaman Bee Gees President Bee Gees Premier Men’s team travelled to top of the table Maroochydore on Saturday, having won three of their four previous games. From the start Bee Gees went straight on the attack, with Cameron Nairn seeing plenty of the ball and causing the defence lots of concern. Striker Jacob Fullock put Bee Gees two nil up at half time due to some strong play and lethal finishing when one on one with the home keeper. Both sides came out strong in the second half. It was felt that Bee Gees needed a third to secure the points against a good Maroochydore outfit. At times the contest was physical, with both teams picking up a couple of bookings, and Cameron Nairn was constantly the centre of attention and eventually went off after getting injured. Again it was Fullock who settled the game, pouncing for his third. Maroochydore then had one man sent off which meant the Green Machine could attack the spaces. Jeremy Lynch scored the fourth goal which keeps them in fourth spot on the ladder, only three points behind new leaders Noosa. This week the boys are at home to Caloundra. Bee Gees Women also had a good weekend, winning 3-0 at Buderim. Goal scorers were Sylvie Bissinger (2) and Courtney Tucker. The women are home this Friday night against Woombye.

On his death bed

9

Marvin was in the hospital on his death bed. The family called Marvin’s preacher to be with him in his final moments. As the preacher stood by the bed, Marvin’s condition seemed to deteriorate, and Marvin motioned for someone to quickly pass him a pen and paper. The preacher quickly got a pen and paper and lovingly handed it to Marvin. But before he had a chance to read the note, Marvin died. The preacher, feeling that now wasn’t the right time to read it, put the note in his jacket pocket.

3

It was at the funeral while speaking that the preacher suddenly remembered the note. Reaching deep into his pocket the preacher said, “and you know what, I suddenly remembered that right before Marvin died he handed me a note, and knowing Marvin I’m sure it was something inspiring that we can all gain from”. With that introduction the preacher ripped out the note and opened it. The note said, “Hey, you are standing on my oxygen tube!” Contributed by Phil Stanton from Beerwah

Week beginning 31/05/17 ARIES March 21 - April 20 A new financial business decision sees just what needs to be done. Don’t let others’ disagreements stop you from enjoying life. Financial statistics may be a bit askew this week, so make sure that what you are buying has real worth and value. The end of this month has a tough frustrating Mars/Saturn opposition. Please avoid accidents. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 If any problems appear this week they may reveal a flaw in one of your old plans. That requires the normal action so be prudent. Well thought out repairs are much better than being headstrong. Innovative ideas can put you into action. Express your originality, individuality and independence. Make long range plans with travel reservations. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Dreams you may have in the midnight hours this week indicate new connections coming up for you; they could be affectionate. Spend a little time inside your mind with your intuitive ability to find answers to your puzzles. There is a chance to find an inventive solution to a lingering problem and be the one who knows how to walk the road! CANCER June 22 - July 22 This Wednesday sees the Moon in Leo and, even the beginning of next month, strong creative energies can point the way out of an impasse. Use the last of this month and the beginning of the next to free yourself from any limitations. There may be some drama and so you will need to handle other people carefully and not provoke defensiveness.

LEO July 23 - August 22 The end of May has the Moon in your sign and so this is the time to take a chance and do something exciting and different! Express your most original self and life will then offer you progressive innovative options. The benefit of Mercury with Pluto now sees you able to do much-needed financial research. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 The first three days of the new month of June sees the Moon in your sign and you will not be content to play a quiet role behind the scenes. In fact Virgos will be revved up and find conditions receptive for making rapid strides towards reaching a goal. Nothing much gets past your scrutiny now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The end of May will have seen you shining as you probably have done your own thing and are toying with the idea of another innovative and unique experiment. The week may be full of getting rid of rigid opposition and polarized positions. The weekend sees the Moon in your sign and you should have no troubles. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The Moon in your sign until early next week may suggest that you check up on your physical health. It’s your time now to solve, avoid or forestall potential problems. You will be eager to get moving after June 9 as prior to this you have to contend with slow or stubborn reactions. Someone helps solve problems.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 Try not to go back to your old ways of looking for answers and getting caught up in complex and antagonistic details. When you need a good answer, stick with the mind of a detective to find them. It’s time to take your best adventurous self off on independent roads less travelled by others. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Jupiter is putting pressure on Capricorns and restlessness pushes you to be on the go. Be careful lifting weights or not looking where you are going as the week ahead can see you tripping up and bruising or breaking a bone.
