Hi Everyone...

What's On this weekend Travelling North

I just wanted to alert you all that it is now only eight weeks until

on the Cover

the Maleny Show. After 19 years of threating to enter the show, I think this could be my year. I have finally narrowed it down to two possible categories that I feel confident in entering - one is pikelets and the other is chutney. Not long ago a friend shared her tried and true “chutney for dummies” recipe and recently Brownie harvested some tamarillos (also known as tree tomatoes), so I figure that finally I might have my perfect not-so-secret ingredient to feature in my winning entry. I do realise there are many very experienced home cooks who have been entering their tasty delights for years but I am not going to let this deter me. I am all organised this weekend to cook up my first ever batch of tasty tamarillos, and will see how I go. If it is a total disaster I still have seven more weeks to perfect my pikelet making techniques! Don’t forget that the Maleny Show competition schedule is available on the show website and for those still battling technology there are a small number of hard copies available around town. Regards, Maleny Players actors, Barry Harber (playing Frank) and Barbara Thomas (playing Frances), performing in ‘Travelling North’ with the Kombi van provided by Kate Woolston of LoveDubs of Maleny. See What’s on, this page.

Maleny Players’ 2019 season will kick off with David Williamson’s ‘Travelling North’, a play of love, conflict, humour and reason, at The Playhouse, Maleny Showgrounds on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6 and

AT SPICERS TAMARIND RETREAT

Quarry campaigners victorious The triumphant cheers from inside the Sunshine Coast Council chambers at Caloundra could be heard all the way to Beerburrum last Thursday when council voted against approving the controversial quarry proposal for the town. After a two-year campaign by locals, councillors overwhelmingly supported the Beerburrum community in rejecting the development approval to open up a new hard rock quarry on the outskirts of the township. The situation appeared dire after council planning staff recommended the quarry be approved but the Beerburrum Action Group, supported by the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network, weren’t having any of that. After all their hard work, they weren’t going to falter at the last hurdle. A campaign of emailing the Mayor Mark Jamieson

07 5494 0666

and all the councillors resulted in the decision to reject the application being an impressive five votes for and one against, with a number of councillors either missing the meeting or excused due to conflicts of interest. Local Councillor Rick Baberowski was instrumental in gaining council support for Beerburrum’s community. “The decision of council to support my refusal motion means that the Beerburrum community can have greater confidence in their revitalisation plan for the town; a safer future based on its brilliant natural and social history attributes,” said Cr Baberowski. Next week, GC&M News will take a look at how the campaign came about and the unexpected positives it has brought to Beerburrum.

Following in the footsteps of the Palmer United Party, Clive Palmer registered the second reincarnation of the United Australia Party (UAP) in 2018. The UAP candidate for the seat of Fisher in the upcoming federal election is Trevor Gray, who has lived at Parrearra for the past ten years. “I have spent the last ten years working with farmers and land owners in remote Australia,” said Mr Gray in announcing his candidature. “I have also spent 30 years in Sydney working across business development, sales for a global telecommunications company, debt recovery, business-to-business publishing and advertising. I studied engineering, quality management and business marketing part time while working as a technical sales engineer for a defence manufacturer on the Collins class submarine project. “I am passionate about putting Australia first and ending politicians’ unfair and excessive pensions, entitlements and benefits. “I have worked extensively with men's groups teaching empowerment skills to assist men in embracing their lives with integrity and respect for the betterment of themselves, their relationships and the community. “Fake news and the incitement of racial and religious conflict is rife, drawing attention away from critical issues that affect the quality of life of our people both now and into the future,” he said. Mr Gray said important issues include the increase in electricity and water bills through privatisation and mismanagement; greater foreign ownership

of agricultural land putting control of the bulk of food production into the hands of foreign entities; the selling off of mineral resources to foreign investments; inadequate pensions for elders, veterans and the unemployed; provisional tax strangling small business growth; and the NBN failure. “We wonder why we seem to not be learning from the mistakes of our past, but nothing substantial or meaningful will change under the Labor/Greens alliance or Liberal/Nationals Coalition,” Mr Gray said. “The two-party system is now failing Australia and the Australian people with corporate politicians pandering to themselves and their corporate donors instead of acting in the best interests of our people and our sovereignty. “Real change can only occur when the voice of the people, not the self-serving major parties, is heard and acted upon. The UAP and I as the candidate for Fisher are committed to taking that voice to parliament. “But we can't do that without the help of the people. The people must demand change on election day. We the people must see that continuing to vote for the major parties and expecting a different outcome from the government is insanity, a wasted vote and a lost opportunity for real change,” he said. Mr Gray will host a meet and greet event at the Maleny Hotel on Sunday, April 14 from 2-5pm to meet locals and hear their concerns. Mr Gray can be contacted on fisher@unitedaustraliaparty.org.au or 0438 953 142.

Memories of wartime Local resident Peter Miller recently contacted GC&M News about a heart-warming story involving his mum May Miller (nee Cotterill) who, as a young Australian school girl during World War II, knitted a scarf for an unknown soldier and their serendipitous meeting many years later. We caught up with Peter and 85-year-old May at their home in Beerwah to find out a little more about this fascinating story. May explained that during the war years school kids were often called upon to help lift the morale of Australian soldiers through various assistance schemes. One of the war time efforts involved knitting winter scarves for soldiers overseas, which May did as a nine-year-old primary student. May said any child who could knit and wanted to help was given some khaki wool and then the children pinned their name and address to the scarves to be sent away. Much to May’s delight, a soldier called Tom Saunders wrote back and thanked her for the scarf, to which she had also included a photo of herself. As far as May knew she was one of only a few to receive an acknowledgment letter. “We started a correspondence which went on for about a year and then the letters stopped suddenly and I sadly presumed he had been killed. I grew up, got married and eventually forgot about it all,” May said. Many years later in the early 1980s, May received

By Sonia Clark a call out of the blue from her mother who was living in Maitland NSW saying she had received a strange letter addressed to May from someone called Tom Saunders. The letter explained that one Anzac Day Tom had been reminiscing while sorting through his memorabilia and decided to see if he could contact the young girl who knitted him a scarf and whose photo he still had. “It was a testimony to the local Maitland Post Office that they were able to track me down through a letter addressed to me at our original home address in Maitland as my parents had moved a few times, including out of Maitland, over the years,” May said. May used the phone book to get in contact with Tom who it turned out lived only half an hour away from May and her husband Des.

up at regular intervals. Sadly, Tom passed away on Anzac Day just a couple of years after their reunion but the heart-warming story of a chance connection lives on with May who has generously shared it with GC&M News readers.

Over the next 18 months or so, Tom and his wife became close friends with May and Des, meeting

Large Landsborough tree to be felled Mystery surrounds the death of a mature tree in Railway Park at Landsborough. Locals would not be able to miss the skeletal frame of the very large silky oak tree, situated in the park next to the train station, which has suddenly died for no apparent reason. According to a Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson, the tree was reported on March 4, with council’s tree assessment team investigating but finding there was nothing they could do. “There is no evidence that the tree was poisoned,” the spokesperson said. “Silky oaks are very susceptible to different types of root disease and even a small amount of disturbance within the critical root zone can cause decline,” the spokesperson said. “The large native tree was providing shade to a picnic table and children’s playground, which will now be in full sun. “With the tree located in a high use public space, council has made the decision to cut it down. Silky oak is a sought-after timber and council says it won’t be wasted. “The lower log will be salvaged and offered to millers and wood working groups. “The upper limbs and canopy will be chipped and used as mulch in council parks,” the spokesperson said. Council has indicated that the tree will be

replaced with a suitable species that matches the area and, although it is yet to decide what that will be, it will be an advanced specimen that will provide useful shade within several years. Asked what locals should do if they see trees showing signs of ill health in council parks, the spokesperson said that residents should call customer contact on 5475 7272 and lodge a request for arborist inspection.

Beerburrum upgrade starts Beerburrum is one step closer to becoming the gateway to the Glass House Mountains trail network. In mid-2018, Sunshine Coast Council asked for community feedback on a draft project to develop part of the Parrot Park Environmental Reserve in Beerburrum to create what council called a “trailhead facility”. The project, a cooperation between council and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, will see the development of a new park for locals and visitors to use when setting off on trail walks into the surrounding national parks and reserves network. Locals will now see that project spring to life, with construction work starting on the trailhead entry and Parrot Park carpark. Stage one of the works will create 17 new carparking spaces and establish a formalised entry to the Beerburrum trail network. Local councillor Rick Baberowski is excited that the works have started. “The 17 new parking bays will allow the community and visitors to park vehicles within close proximity to the school, Beerburrum trails and surrounding shops,” Cr Baberowski said. “Included in the scope of works will be the allinclusive trailhead entry area with an exciting new art screening area to be painted by Beerburrum State School students. The art work will have an Aboriginal theme.

“The trailhead entry itself will include a new sandstone block yarning circle, adjacent stone seating area, picnic tables and seats, new park entry signage and information board, additional boulders, drinking fountain with dog bowl, large turfed area, bike racks, a general waste bin, planting and landscaping,” Cr Baberowski said. “I am especially excited to see the entry for the Beerburrum trailhead commence - a first for our region. As always, thanks in advance for your patience during the works.” Works are scheduled to take three months, weather permitting, finishing in June. Maleny Credit Union members must vote again to deliver community benefits

Dear members, As you know, the proposed transaction with Firstmac Holdings Limited has received overwhelming support from members, with a 96% yes vote in the postal ballot. This means we have cleared the first hurdle but it is important to remember that members still have one more step to take before we can realise the benefits of this transaction for the community. That step is to vote at the upcoming scheme meeting and demutualisation meeting. There are two ways to vote. • You can attend the two meetings of MCU members that will be held at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street, Maleny on April 30 (5.30pm start). • You can appoint the chair of the scheme and demutualisation meetings (or another person of your choosing) to cast your vote as your proxy. The participating directors encourage you to lock in your vote now by appointing the chair of the meetings to cast your vote so there is no risk of missing your opportunity. You should have received your scheme booklet and proxy voting instructions in the mail. If you haven’t, please contact our branch. The directors and employees of MCU are working hard to ensure that we are ready for the next stage of the proposed transaction and we are pleased to report that everything is on track! We are looking forward to unlocking the benefits for the community including: • A $2 million donation for the Maleny Charitable Trust and a large ongoing donation for at least a decade • A dividend for each member • $1 to member investment shareholders for each of their shares • A guarantee that the Maleny branch will continue to operate for the next 10 years and all staff will keep their jobs MCU recommends that you vote YES for Firstmac to acquire MCU because it guarantees a future for sustainable banking in Maleny.

Fundraiser for RSL launched State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle last week launched a fundraising initiative for the Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch to construct a new home for members. In October 2017 Mr McArdle met with sub branch officials to discuss the difficulties they faced. Mr McArdle said that at the time it was clear the members had not lost their spirit or enthusiasm for the important work of supporting veterans and their families. “The Beerwah and District RSL has been being doing it tough of recent times but, undeterred by past events, the members have pushed forward. They have now secured a parcel of land on which to build a structure,” Mr McArdle said. “The sub branch is now seeking community support to raise the funds needed to build this new home,” he said. The sub branch will need to raise $30,000 to allow for construction of suitable premises and connection to electricity and water. Mr McArdle said the Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch was formed just after World War II and had played a significant role in supporting

veterans in the community. “The current members acknowledge the important ground work done by the founding members which included Nev Anning, Cliff Barr, Bill Neil, Bill Swann, Alan Free, Tom Baker-Finch and Jack Barry. Of course, so many more men and women have contributed to the RSL’s proud history,” he said. “Full details of the fundraiser will be released shortly. I am simply asking organisations and people who have enjoyed the comradery of the RSL to acknowledge their wonderful contribution to our system of government and democratic lifestyle and give as much as they can for this very worthy cause. “We cannot allow this proud RSL sub branch to fade and, importantly, your contribution will renew and revitalise the spirit that has so long lived in Beerwah due to its connection with the RSL,” Mr McArdle said. For information on how to make a donation go to Mark McArdle’s website at www.markmcardlemp.com.

Backing for Glasshouse Country RSL renovations

Five generations gather at Glass House Mountains By Sonia Clark

Ahead of the 2019 federal Budget, local Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace has thrown his support behind funding for renovations to the Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch. Andrew Wallace (centre) with Mr Wallace said the sub branch was Glasshouse RSL deputy president a true community asset that deserves Dave Siebrecht and president Brian Machin the government’s help. “I have visited Glasshouse Country RSL many times and I know what fantastic support they offer for many of the Sunshine Coast’s 15,000 veterans. But president Brian and the members have been telling me for a while that they could do so much more,” Mr Wallace said. “Renovations to the sub branch would not come cheap but with the right funding Glasshouse Country RSL could provide a safer, more appealing space that would draw more former service men and women to the sub branch and help them to get access to the welcoming mateship and the lifechanging services available. “A renovated space would also allow Glasshouse Country RSL to cater to community meetings and other local events, creating a valuable new low cost facility for local residents and helping the sub branch to sustain itself into the future.” Mr Wallace called on local residents to show their support. “I am fighting in Canberra to secure federal funding for these renovations but I need your help. Email me, contact me through my website, or comment on my Facebook page to show your support for this terrific community project.” Mr Wallace can be contacted on andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wallace4fisher or through his website www.andrewwallacemp.com.au.

In what is now becoming something of a rarity, five generations from the same family recently gathered for a family barbeque at Glass House Mountains. Members of the extended Chaplin family welcomed their newest addition, gorgeous six-week-old Isaiah Perumal, who was introduced to his great great grandfather, 88-year-old Mick Chaplin. Originally a timber cutter from Beerwah, Mick spent many years living in the local area and continues to live independently at his home in Gympie. His son Mark Chaplin from Mooloolah travelled to Gympie to bring Mick down for the event, which was also attended by some of Mark’s siblings. Mark and his seven siblings grew up in Beerwah, The family home on Simpson Street later made way for IGA’s expansion. Mark’s daughter Leah Pavisic hosted the family gathering at her home in Glass House Mountains, with Isaiah and his mum Jasmine (Leah’s daughter) travelling up for the happy occasion from Victoria Point in Brisbane. The day was a wonderful opportunity to have numerous generations gather under one roof and to acknowledge Mick becoming a great great grandfather, and he was obviously thrilled to meet his great great grandson. An additional highlight of the afternoon was Mick’s rendition of some classic bush poetry, performed in character, which proved highly entertaining for his family. Mick Chaplin (seated), his son Mark, granddaughter Leah Pavisic, great granddaughter Jasmine and great great grandson Isaiah Perumal

What would Mary Grigor have thought more than 140 years ago about the world officially celebrating the achievements of women? By 1878 Mary had given birth to nine children, she was managing a Cobb & Co meal stop for passengers and drivers, she was operating an accommodation house for overnight travellers, she was acting as the unofficial midwife for pregnant women in the Glass House Mountains district, and in her spare time was extinguishing bush fires. Mary probably thought she was simply a country housewife. Before young Mary Fenwick married William Grigor and established Bankfoot House, she was a well-travelled young Scottish lass. By 1861, 27-year-old Mary Fenwick had travelled on sailing ships around the world one and a half times as a single woman, both via the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn. Mary and her family arrived in Moreton Bay on January 19, 1855. The family settled in Eagle Farm and Mary took a position as tutor/ governess to the children of Captain John Clements Wickham, first police magistrate and government (NSW) resident of the Moreton Bay district at Newstead House. Captain Wickham’s first wife, Anna Macarthur, died in 1852, aged 35, leaving him with two sons and a daughter. He remarried in 1857 to Ellen Deering. Following Queensland’s separation from NSW in 1859, Captain Wickham’s position was abolished. He returned to England with his family and his second wife Ellen, who was pregnant with their second child. Mary sailed with the family continuing in her governess role. Mrs Wickham gave birth to a son, Henry Falkland Wickham on board the Duncan Dunbar in 1860 near the Falkland Islands. Mary’s job with the Wickhams ended in England and Mary returned to Australia in September 1861, arriving back in Brisbane in December via Freemantle and Melbourne. The journey completed three major ocean crossings by sailing ship for the young single woman over a six-year period. Back in Queensland once again, Mary took a position as governess to the children of the McConnel family of Durundur Station (Woodford). In August 1863, she married William Grigor. The women of Bankfoot House are currently being celebrated in an exhibition at the Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct. The exhibition was launched on International Women’s Day with Mary’s great granddaughter, Ethel Burgess, sharing her memories of her forebears. Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Plant-based patterns

Jacky Lowry’s exhibition Delightful Details showcases 28 original handmade prints and printing plates created by Jacky over the past few years. The plates and prints are made using plants and plant parts and show exquisite detail and abstract patterning, while still readily identifiable as foliage. This printmaking technique is especially suitable for capturing details of the patterns in plants that Jacky delights in. Prints taken from these plates reveal delightful details, including the shapes and patterns of leaves – interesting vein arrangements and/or interesting leaf shapes – and of little plants or plant branchlets in interesting arrangements. Jacky’s exhibition Delightful Details is currently on display at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, until April 28 and will officially open at 6.30pm on Friday, April 5. For information about having an exhibition at Vianta Arts email reddoorart@bigpond.com.

No cash payment for cans The Beerwah Lions Club would like to thank Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for their support in encouraging people to donate their cans to our Lions Club so that we can raise funds to assist our community projects. However, we are concerned that the article in last week’s edition of the paper titled ‘Cash for cans nothing new for Lions’ may have been confusing for locals who may think that we hand out money to individuals and this is definitely not the case. Each month we set up our monthly depot point at Coochin Creek Co-op between 8.30am – 11am as a drop-off point only for people to donate their cans to us. This community service we provide has helped us to be able to support our many community initiatives over the years, and we are keen to continue doing it.

EC Diamond reaches for the stars

By Sonia Clark Eastyn Collie is a young man from Glass House Mountains with a big future as he follows his dreams towards becoming a pro-wrestler. GC&M News was recently contacted by Eastyn’s proud dad Neil with news that Eastyn will be heading off to the United States later this year to train with former World Wrestling Entertainment star Al Snow. Neil said that, over the years, Eastyn had battled a number of personal challenges but with grit and determination had managed to turn his life around through his involvement with professional wrestling. Eastyn, who currently works as an apprentice baker, goes by the professional moniker EC Diamond when in the ring. He was introduced to United Pro Wrestling Training Academy in Beerwah at the age of 14, and over the past four years has developed his skills to become a popular headlining drawcard at various wrestling events throughout the Sunshine Coast. As well as training at the Beerwah training academy, Eastyn trains at the Beerwah Plus Fitness gym, transforming the previously shy and unsocial boy into a fit fighting machine. The opportunity to train at the Ohio Valley Wrestling Academy in the US in September will certainly help push his techniques to the next level and no doubt he will pick up some great tips from wrestling legend and promotor Al Snow. “Eastyn has battled bullying, low esteem and depression but he is now standing tall with this amazing opportunity to train internationally. I’m such a proud parent and so excited to see him reach for the stars,” Neil said.

Community Groups Writers’ generous donation

Contributed by Patty Beecham At the annual general meeting of the Beerwah Writers Group outgoing president Sue Montagu presented Adrienne Heppel with a cheque for $200 as part of the group’s ongoing commitment to helping local charities. Adrienne, from the Anglican Maori Mission Sunshine Coast, addressed the meeting and explained how the funds were distributed. The money contributed to local families in need including for petrol for a family visiting their sick child who had been in hospital for a month, food for a disabled man, help for an elderly couple to install a new TV antenna, lawn mowing for a local person and, perhaps the most interesting, supplying the inscription on a carved head plaque for the first ordained Anglican Maori minister in this area. Called a kophai kophai the board was etched by Caboolture Signs and denotes the beginning and end of life for the Reverend Murphy Pukeroa, who is buried at Mooloolah Cemetery. “We are very grateful to receive this much needed money from the Beerwah Writers Group, as it enables us to continue our work with charities like Share the Dignity and many others,” Adrienne told the group. “The ongoing needs and diverse nature of our work will continue and we sincerely appreciate every donation.” The group’s new president, Ian B MacLeod, confirmed the annual donation would continue and said he was very proud to be able to continue the tradition of supporting local charities and families in need. The Beerwah Writers Group meets at the Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of the month from 10am. Sue Montagu presenting Adrienne Heppel with the donation

Glasshouse Seniors Citizens

Contributed by Betty Pringle At our March meeting Vanda from Koala Rescue spoke of our declining koala population due to habitat destruction, disease and injuries and deaths caused by domestic dogs, feral animals and vehicles. We had an enjoyable day recently visiting the Maleny Seniors, where we were welcomed and entertained by the Ukelele Club. Emily, who was 14 years old, sang for us. She had a beautiful voice and she sang one song in Italian. This was followed by a lovely lunch. On Tuesday, April 23 a free morning tea will be served at the Beerwah Hall (next door to the library). Our next meeting is on Tuesday, April 9. Enquiries to Marie on 5496 9260.

Environment Super smut to combat weed

In a bid to help save forest floors from an invasive South American weed, the CSIRO plans to release a new fungal biocontrol agent. Wandering trad (Tradescantia fluminensis) has become a significant environmental weed in parts of eastern Australia where it forms dense carpets on forest floors, smothering native vegetation and clogging waterways. Extensive research and laboratory trials at CSIRO’s Canberra biocontainment facility and other international research showed a leaf smut fungus from Brazil only infects the weed and not other plants. According to CSIRO senior research scientist Dr Louise Morin, the fungus is spread through spores and needs the leaves of the wandering trad to survive – if there is no wandering trad to infect, the fungus dies. “We know from decades of research in this field, that specialised fungi, like the leaf smut, have specific genes that enable them to successfully infect and cause disease only on single or a narrow range of plant species,” Dr Morin said. “So we look at plants that are related to wandering trad including native plants to make sure the fungus will only infect the weed.” The first release of the new biocontrol agent will be in the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria. CSIRO field biologist Dr Ben Gooden, who is coordinating the rollout of the biocontrol program across Australia, said highly targeted and tested biocontrol agents like the fungus were a more environmentally sustainable option than other available tools. “Scientifically tested biocontrol agents like this fungus provide a longer term, environmentally sustainable way of controlling weeds like wandering trad, without harming Australian plants or animals,” Dr Gooden said. “Currently, the only tools available to the community and local councils against the weed are hand-pulling and chemical herbicides, which only bring short-term control and have the unintended consequence of killing native plants and disrupting complex rainforest ecosystems.”

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association With Charne Turner The president and members of Friends of Mary Cairncross Association (FMCA) are very pleased to welcome Marilyn Beale to the executive committee and into the role of association secretary. Credit must also be given to Helen Jackson for managing in that role, under challenging computer circumstances, for much longer than she had originally agreed. Thank you to both Helen and Marilyn. Over this past weekend there has been much activity at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (MCSR) with the inaugural BioBlitz taking place. The reserve has been awash with a bevy of scientists, artists, Aboriginal elders, volunteers and citizen scientists working together to identify and document the biodiversity of life in and on five Watkins fig trees. Knowing the diversity of life in the rainforest, albeit a small snapshot like this project has been, enhances general and specific scientific understanding of the inter-connectedness of living relationships, and of the ecological importance of places like MCSR. There are worldwide threats to biodiversity including land clearing, habitat destruction and change, unsustainable resource use, introduced species and climate change. MCSR is a remaining pocket of rainforest, as it has existed for centuries. We are extremely privileged to have this reserve here in our area. The BioBlitz has been a huge success. The results are now on display in the theatrette at the Rainforest Discovery Centre as part of the new theme, Biodiversity – That’s Life. The exhibition will continue until the end of August. Make sure you visit soon. FMCA meets three times a year with a $10 yearly subscription. Membership information is available at the Discovery Centre. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Place Making Master Plan - did we get it right? It was great to see so many locals at the three information sessions held on March 21, 23 and 27 at the Landsborough School of Arts. This is a very challenging but also exciting time for the Landsborough community, with the draft Landsborough Place Making Master Plan now available for online review and feedback. The plan captures the community’s vision for the town and outlines place making recommendations for Landsborough’s streets, public spaces and looks at future opportunities. While the main aim of the consultation is to seek feedback on the master plan, the project team hopes to hear from residents with their preliminary ideas of what can be achieved through the proposed $3.3 million beautification program for Cribb Street. As the design progresses throughout the year, the community will have the opportunity to provide further feedback with a reference group soon to be formed. I urge all residents to have their say via an online survey available until April 18 on council’s website www.haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Caloundra South reaching new milestones I was pleased to join a tour of the rapidly emerging Division 1 community of Caloundra South on Tuesday, March 12. The tour included an escorted drive through the first suburbs of Aura Central that residents will start to call home, with around 300 lots already sold. Construction of residential lots is well advanced and first settlements are expected in April with the first new roads into Aura Central being opened to the public around mid-year. The Aura Business Park is also progressing well, which will contribute to the 20,000 jobs that the Caloundra South development needs to create. This fast growing residential development is a great opportunity to increase visitation and build sustainable tourism communities in our Glass House Mountains townships. When you get the chance, I encourage you to visit this emerging community and see the progress.

Connecting with the local communities In addition to attending conferences to speak about my role as the councillor for the portfolio of transport, and arts and heritage, it is always extremely rewarding to be invited to present to local community groups. I recently had the chance to speak with the Beerwah State School year 6 students, to provide an overview of the three levels of government, particularly the roles and responsibilities of local governments. In addition, I was fortunate to be invited to the Combined Glasshouse Probus Club to provide a regional update as well as local updates and new ways to interact with council. I am always very pleased to attend other community group meetings and provide this update - the more informed we are about council, the better! State Member for Caloundra Landsborough rail overpass public forum

Please save the date for the next public forum that I will hold on the Landsborough rail overpass. It will be held at the Landsborough Memorial Hall on Friday, April 26 from 10am12noon. I encourage anyone who will be impacted by the changes proposed to attend including residents, property owners, people who work in Landsborough and business operators. If you are unable to attend this forum please consider completing the community survey that will be made available on my website from the week of the forum. This is the same survey that forum attendees will receive. In January and February this year I wrote to both the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Minister Mark Bailey, respectively, requesting they agree to be present at a public forum in Landsborough. At the time of writing I still have not had the courtesy of a reply, which in my mind highlights the arrogance and how far out of touch this Labor Government is in relation to the needs and wishes of the people of Landsborough. I therefore decided to call a public forum so that everyone can have their say on how they see the overpass playing out. I have invited the Minister and an official from the department to attend and if need be I will place two vacant chairs at the front of the meeting so people are reminded that, though the invite was sent, neither were prepared to front and discuss the issues with Landsborough residents. Without a doubt the overpass will impact businesses and residential land owners. The current proposal closes the rail crossing and places the overpass in Maleny Street. By doing so there will be a loss of people’s homes and it could devastate businesses in Cribb and Maleny streets. I took the opportunity this year to meet with different groups about this proposal including Ken and Anne Husband of Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA) on January 30 and the Landsborough - love where we live group on March 7. It is clear there are many different views when it comes to this proposal as the overpass will impact each person differently depending on their connection to Landsborough. It is important that everyone has a say in relation to the development of this proposal. However, we cannot just discuss how this will affect the town, we must continue to work towards solutions that will ensure Landsborough thrives regardless of what happens with the overpass. I will keep residents informed on the progress of the matter and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day.

Emotional and nutritional support for school aged kids With the first term of school almost done, owner of The Healthy Guru Denese Brookes has noted a number of mums coming into the store seeking advice about support for their school aged children who are becoming increasingly tired and irritable – especially the younger ones, with the demands of school. While Denese is sure that everyone is looking forward to a well- earned rest over the upcoming Easter school holidays, she says that she and her team are always available to offer suggestions towards therapies and products which may support your child’s emotional and nutritional wellbeing. “We would like to express our support for the families – especially those with younger school aged or with prep students on how they are coping. We are getting a lot of mums coming in and expressing their concerns about their children feeling tired and overwhelmed – and not just young kids - older teenage kids too” said Denese. “We would encourage parents to come in and talk with our friendly team about a tailored plan for your child’s needs. Our therapists offer specific treatments which can be beneficial for kids such as Naturopathy and Kinesiology – we also offer a comprehensive range of nutritional supplements to support immunity and resilience.” Kinesiology can be used to address separation anxiety and emotional issues, while naturopathic support can include herbal formulas for immunity and to help with stress. “We also offer Emotional Freedom Technique which can be used by parents to assist with calmness and coping strategies at home, and we

School News Poppy Pete visits kindy

Traditions are always being adapted at Beerwah Kindergarten, which has been part of the community for many decades. A tradition that was established five years ago was the annual visit from Poppy Pete. The owner of Pete’s Plant Hire Peter Tribe has been visiting the kindy since his eldest grandchild Lily attended and was taught by co-director Rebecca Mackintosh. Poppy Pete brings along two of his diggers for the children to explore. Since Lily graduated to primary school, her younger siblings Izaiah and Elizabeth have attended the kindy and this year their youngest brother William was proud to have his Poppy visit. What made this year’s visit extra special is that Pete is retiring this year and selling his business. Rebecca, known as Miss Becky, says Poppy Pete’s visits always create excitement among the kindy friends and has become a highlight of the visitor calendar. “Families play such an important role in our kindy and we welcome and value input from all stakeholders,” Rebecca said. “As the saying goes, ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’ and what a wonderful village we have,” she said.

Creative options for kids at Gondor Writers Centre

FREE TRIAL Classes Saturday Mornings at Landsborough Primary School

Get your kids off their devices and into creativity with some fun and engaging writing and art workshops during the Easter school holidays. Gondor Writers Centre based at Landsborough is offering a number of one-day creative workshops over the holiday break that can cater to both primary and high school students. Centre director Elaine Ouston said a creative child was never bored and all the holiday workshops offered at the centre were both entertaining and educational. “Our workshops are all taught by highly qualified teaching and creative professionals in a safe, supportive and supervised environment. We have our lovely enclosed outdoor garden area, which the kids love, and the workshops really allow the children to extend and express themselves creatively,” Elaine said. A variety of one-day workshops will be on offer during the holidays from 8.30am-4pm at a cost of $40 per child. Workshop topics include creating a picture book, drawing and creating 3D pictures in clay,

and writing a one act play, which also involves creating a story, making a character mask and acting out the play. Illustrator Kerry Ide is also offering two turtle inspired art workshops at the centre at a cost of $35 plus Eventbrite booking fee. Vege fun for everyone program Educators and children at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre are super excited to be participating in the school readiness Vege Fun for Everyone program. Centre coordinator Dee McCann said that the 12-week program had been specifically tailored to develop a fun and positive attitude towards vegetables. The program was developed in consultation with dietitians from Flinders University and is now implemented by Queensland Childcare Centre staff. Incorporating a seed-to-table approach, the program aims to develop positive attitudes towards vegetables in a play-based format. Dee says that current research indicates inadequate fruit and vegetable intake has been identified as a risk factor towards the development of chronic disease and obesity. Unfortunately only 3% of 4-8-year-old Australian children meet national vegetable intake guidelines (22% when potatoes are added, including fried potatoes).

Dee explained that for most children liking vegetables based on taste and texture did not come naturally. The program therefore seeks to increase young children’s interactions with vegetables in order to assist in developing an increased interest, awareness and taste for vegetables. “Using a play-based approach, the aim of the program is to increase children’s food literacy and knowledge and promote learning and experiencing vegetables in a fun environment that encourages creativity, self-directed tasting and food skills,” Dee said. “In previous years, the 12-week educator-led program has been proven to encourage children to explore vegetables, leading to positive experiences and an increased dialogue about vegetables among staff, children and families.” Familiarity strongly influences young children’s food preferences, so early childhood is the perfect time for interventions that will influence lifelong tastes and food preferences. Research has shown that repeated tasting leads to familiarity in children and the centre educators assist as positive role models by exhibiting healthy eating behaviours, sitting with the children at mealtimes and interacting. Eating in a family style dining environment has also proved to reinforce positive eating behaviours. Over 12 weeks, different vegetables are introduced fortnightly. The fortnightly program includes show and tell – where vegetables are introduced and explored; a farming day – where children plant seeds and watch them grow; a vege creation art and craft day; and even a

cooking day. Children are also provided with takehome packs of the week’s vegetables for parents to cook with, which is a great way to extend the program and encourage home role modelling that is an intrinsic tool of success. The Vege Fun for Everyone program is not the only way that Queensland Childcare Services supports the health and wellbeing of children in its centres. All children attending the centre receive daily morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea from the Healthy Cooking Company, a service established by the founders of Queensland Childcare Services to promote and develop healthy eating habits. Dietitian Megan Gracey and the team at the Healthy Cooking Company are truly passionate about preventive healthcare and educating children and their families about healthy choices. A dedicated professional educator, Megan visits centres regularly to provide nutrition education to the children (and team members) about the importance of core food groups and healthy lunchboxes. If you would like to find out more about the centre please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

You Said It Re: State visit

I refer to Mark Forbes’ letter regarding the recent visit by the Queensland Government in GC&M News, March 20. I found it perplexing that his fledgling organisation for eating disorders was seemingly being ignored by the incumbent state Labor government, yet had received financial assistance through the federal LNP government. I then discovered that the Queensland Government already provides a comprehensive state-wide service for patients with eating disorders. The Queensland Eating Disorder Service (QuEDS) provides advice, treatment and education services. These include: • Outpatient treatment services (for 18 years and older) • An intensive day program held four days a week for eight weeks This service is available through your local GP as a referral and administered through the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. In addition, through the National Eating Disorders Collaboration, Education Queensland provides coaching guides to address body image and eating issues among school-aged athletes. The Queensland Health budget for 2018-2019 is $18.3 billion, an increase of nearly $900 million, of which $1.196 billion is for the Sunshine Coast. In 2017, according to Queensland Health statistics, there were 506 cases of eating disorders diagnosed in Queensland, with 37 of those on the Sunshine Coast. According to a report on the ABC, Mr Greg Hunt, the federal Coalition Health Minister gave $3 million to various organisations such as the Butterfly Foundation. This means each of the 1.2 million people, as stated by Mr Forbes, with an eating disorder will receive the equivalent in $2.50 to address their affliction. I now understand that despite Mr Forbes’ best intentions, he has been used as a political pawn by the federal Coalition government and state LNP members to cast doubt on the incumbent Labor government that has this year budgeted the largest amount of funding for health services in the history of Queensland. Ken Dyer Landsborough

Re: Andrew Wallace to recontest Fisher I read with interest that even before a federal election is called by the Governor General that local politicians are grandstanding themselves for an upcoming battle of blue against red not to mention the cross bench independents looking for a go.

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Mr Wallace likes to make claim to “delivering” to the community of Fisher. There is the statement of $3.13 billion to desperately needed upgrades to the Bruce Highway. The present works between the Sunshine Coast motorway interchange and the Caloundra Road intersection are the only visible signs of any works under way. An extra lane between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane? When will that happen? The Gold Coast freeway cost $2 billion to build, which is a four-lane concrete road with on-going works continuing from Currumbin to Nerang. The Gold Coast has received value for money from that capital outlay. The present Bruce Highway stretch from the old Glass House tourist drive exit to Sippy Downs was opened in January 1986 and hasn’t seen any real upgrade since its inception. Now it’s to receive an extra lane. I’ll believe it when I see it start and finish. Then comes the news of “delivering” $390 million for the duplication of the railway lines between Beerburrum and Landsborough. There has been no start of any works on that stretch of railway line. If there is $3.13 billion and $390 million delivered by the local MP on these pieces of infrastructure I feel it will be seen as “delivered” when it’s actually completed not when most of this election propaganda started. Bang for your buck? Either way, left wing or right wing, it’s the same bird. It’s a cuckoo. Ross Parks Glass House Mountains

What’s next?

So the French people have had enough of the global warming/climate change rhetoric as they are asked by their President to pay more and more and more - now it’s 60% extra for their vehicle fuel. Amazingly the main stream (socialist controlled) media have not mentioned this though. Similar to what the traitorous politicians and their media mates have pushed here with them artificially increasing the price of coal fire power to push their expensive renewables agenda. Stay tuned for what they have waiting for us next. Shane Daly Peachester

Broad agreement exists

In last week's edition (GC&M News, March 27), Jon Woodlands made some risible comments about a coming Maunder Minimum and ice age, implying that the almost universally accepted scientific theory of anthropogenic global warming

SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519

was akin to a “simplistic hypothesis" and a "religion". What Mr Woodlands fails to mention is that the very scientists who brought the approaching Maunder Minimum to our attention also stated that this Maunder Minimum would have, at best, a 0.3°C cooling effect versus the 1°C (and growing) heating we have caused. And, of course, that small cooling effect will be temporary, giving us a false sense of security while it lasts. More details are available here: https://www.skepticalscience.com/grand-solarminimum-mini-ice-age.htm. Note that the link above goes to a website run by a real climate scientist and expert on the Sun - in fact, a solar physicist. The site won the 2011 Eureka Prize from the Australian Museum in the category of Advancement of Climate Change Knowledge. It really does nobody any good when we start discussing flat earth theories and pretend that scientists are all at odds with each other over the climate issue. Scientists are in broad agreement about what is happening. The debate is settled, the verdict is in, and we should be discussing ways of attenuating the heating rather than indulging in ice age fantasies garnered from denier blogs. Gerry Muller Maleny

Wide spectrum of views

I read with interest the recent letters in the GC&M News regarding climate change. The viewpoints certainly cover a wide spectrum. Is our climate changing? If so, is it our fault? It seems to me the number of people is becoming a factor. We don’t seem to be happy with a stable situation. We want a bigger population for a bigger economy, more people to produce more goods for us to consume. I know Malthus in the 1790s said the world wouldn't be able to support the growing population and has been proved wrong but things have moved on from his time. We are consuming the Earth's resources and creating waste at ever increasing speed. Some countries' populations are increasing exponentially. I suppose if I was convinced reducing our population would ease some of the world's problems I should leave, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere else much to go. Ian Pollock Witta

The power of additional repayments It takes foresight to look 10 or 20 years into the future and consider what your finances will look like. It takes discipline to enact a plan to improve the outcome. If you are quite comfortable living day to day or week to week, it’s easy to overlook the power of making minor savings over the long term. But you will thank your younger self if you can find a way to put a little extra on your mortgage regularly. Making additional repayments makes a massive difference over 20 or 30 years, significantly reducing the interest you pay and taking years off your loan. You will typically need to be on a variable interest rate to be able to make 20

additional repayments regularly. Let’s say you have a home loan of $300,000 with an interest rate of 4.5%. If you make additional repayments of $200 per month, you would save almost $60,000 in interest and reduce your loan term by over six years. Many people can make extra repayments at certain times but are worried they may want access to these funds in case of a change in circumstances. There are two main options to accommodate this; a 100% offset account, or a redraw facility. An offset account is a separate savings account that is linked to your home loan. The amount held in your

offset account is subtracted from your loan balance each day, reducing the interest charged. It has normal transaction account functionality so you can withdraw funds easily as often as you like without needing permission. A Redraw Facility allows you to withdraw any additional repayments you have made on your mortgage through the home loan account itself. Until the funds are redrawn, however, they go onto your home loan, thereby reducing the interest charged. While the money is available, it isn’t readily accessible, and you will need to apply through your lender. This helps with ‘forced savings’. Remember, if you take

the money out, it needs to go back in at some point to maximise savings. Take a look at your budget. If you can find $50 a week, consider putting it on your mortgage. In 20 years’ time, you’ll be happy you did. Contact Teresa Harrison today to discuss your options.

Community to benefit

In February the Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA) Inc executive and the Landsborough School of Arts Hall executive met to discuss the possible acquisition by Sunshine Coast Council of Maynard’s property at 489 Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough.

A letter was sent to Cr Rick Baberowski outlining the benefit of this property to Landsborough, both in the place making initiative and the future heritage precinct in the heart of Landsborough. We have learned that council purchased this property on Saturday, March 26 and we wish to thank Cr. Baberowski and the council for recognising the potential of this property to the whole Landsborough community. Since the original heritage precinct was master planned, this property was the missing link in proceeding with the precinct. Acquiring this property means that council and the community can now move forward with the plans, which can eventually include this precinct. This precinct will be an asset to Landsborough and both businesses and the community as a whole will benefit. So thank you Cr Baberowski and Sunshine Coast Council. A.W.Husband Secretary (L.A.C.A.)

What price for ANZAC Day

Once again, in 2019 the Glasshouse RSL Sub Branch has been forced to pay almost $3,000 to ensure our traffic management complies with the local laws of the Sunshine Coast Council temporary event permit, which enables us to conduct ANZAC Day events for our local communities in Landsborough and Glass House Mountains. This is the second year we have been required to pay these fees ($2,500 in 2018) for the privilege of conducting the marches along approximately 200 metres of public roads at each location. ANZAC Day is an international event which is commemorated by current and ex-service personnel, their families and the wider community annually. The ongoing and rising costs of conducting the events are a severe impost on funds which our, and other small regional RSL sub branches, find increasingly difficult to resource. As we are a not-for-profit volunteer organisation, we rely on fund raising events which are conducted throughout the year, much of which is distributed to charities within the veteran communities as per our charter, leaving little more than the essential dollars to realise the annual cost of running the sub branch. The two marches in question are conducted over 15 minutes at each location. In the past the local SES has volunteered to manage the road

Garage sale etiquette

Earlier in the year I was part of a combined garage/shed clearance with neighbours that was published in GC&M News and clearly indicated the operating times. Overall the event was successful, enjoyable and interesting and we met some lovely people. However, I was shocked, disappointed and annoyed with the behaviour of some of the people who attended. The event was advertised to begin at 7am and I had eight people walk up the driveway at 5.50am. I stopped them and they waited outside for another 40 minutes until I waved them in. I don’t know what my neighbours were selling or what prices they had placed on their items. Within the first hour I had successfully sold some items but I had some insulting requests, including $5 for a wheelbarrow that was worth around $50. I have lived in a few countries, including one well known for haggling, but to ask for a price

closures at no cost. Now the requirement is for a valid traffic plan designating all signage to be used per event, a minimum of two vehicles and five personnel at each location and to have a police presence. I can understand the need for these measures in a more heavily populated demographic but I believe our smaller regional areas should be exempted from these requirements. The NSW RSL sub branches have recently been advised that they will not be saddled with financial contributions for their marches, so where is the same level of support from the Queensland Government? If funding continues to be essential to the running of this annual event and costs continue to rise, we may be forced to stop providing our services for the Landsborough and Glass House Mountains communities. Brian Machin President Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch Inc. reduction within the first hour is offensive. This usually occurs around shut-up time for the day, like I see at Woolworths where they reduce their bread and meat at the end of the day. I was also horrified by the gentleman who arrived and immediately requested to use my toilet and then explained why he needed to use it. Garage sales can be hard work and for anyone planning to have one I have a few tips. I would recommend that they prepare by making sure they have coins for change, they give themselves plenty of time to sort and display items the day before, and if you are running it over more than one day that you can secure the items at the end of the first day in case of rain. Over the years I have purchased some great bargains at garage sales. Most people price things fairly, so if you are attending a garage sale please don’t insult people with ridiculous offers. A concert featuring talented Maleny harpists Graham Langdon and Rowena Thomas will be held in St Mary’s Hall, Montville on Sunday, April 14 at 3pm. The concert will also feature one of their young harp students from Peachester, Alex Haslam. Graham and Rowena have performed their exquisite music in a number of venues around the Sunshine Coast hinterland and from Noosa to Coffs Harbour in the past 12 months. Their repertoire has broadened over the six years they have been playing together, introducing original compositions to complement their extensive range of traditional music from many cultures and historical periods. This concert will feature traditional music from Sweden, Asia and the United Kingdom as well as historic pieces from the 13th century and music from contemporary composers. The harpers have a few surprises in store for this concert, with Rowena demonstrating her expertise on the beautiful double-strung harp, while Graham will add his considerable skills on classical guitar to the mix. All in all it should be a lovely experience for both musicians and audience. Entry to the concert is $15 at the door. For further information call Graham on 0418 159 365. with Dr Michael Whiticker

Music Today Live music – keep it living!

I was at a concert at a Maleny venue last weekend. The musicians - two top acts from Brisbane - were super, the room sounded and looked good, the food and bar were well and truly up to scratch, and it was only $10 at the door. However, sadly for all, the audience numbers were poor. One could nominate a lack of good marketing as the primary fault. However, that requires time and money and access to good marketing options. After the organisers – often volunteers - have organised dates, venues, acts, production, hospitality, staffing, etc, actually getting an audience there falls by the wayside. Assuming the budget for marketing is limited, then how do we bring audiences to our events? Certainly a good email list is essential, as is contacting local media outlets - people have to know the event is happening. Beyond that, making the concerts an even better experience and relying on word of mouth is another way, but it doesn’t seem to work. The short of it is that people need to make the effort to go out and for many and various reasons they aren’t doing that. The live music industry is in decline and has been for more than 30 years. On the one hand we need to accept that, but on the other we don’t want music to just be created in the studio and rarely offered live. So let’s stand up and fight the decline. Venue operators are not necessarily at fault as they will respond to numbers. If audiences come to their events, they will continue to run them. If it isn’t the music you like let your local venue know and tell them the sort of things you want to hear. It’s worth a try! Going to a top show in town can be wonderful, so don’t deny yourself that, but give your local venues and acts you might not know a chance. By supporting them, regular venue operators as well as all those volunteers who put on their own events are encouraged to keep going. If you occasionally go out for a coffee or a drink or a meal, be proactive and make it a live music venue. If there is no music be bold and suggest that the venue might consider live music. Finally, being a little audacious myself, this month you have the opportunity to support more than 30 live acts at the Eudlo Music Nights on the April 6 weekend. Go on, make it live! Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Dine In Take Out with Lea Parkes

Landsborough Pub

Last week Brownie and I had family with little people visiting, so we decided heading to the Landsborough Pub after work was going to be a lot easier than preparing dinner for a bunch of people with very different likes and dislikes. Unusually for us we actually took notice of what was on the kid’s menu and for $9 the kids got a choice of five meals, as well as receiving an activity pack with crayons and a Paddle Pop for dessert, all of which got a thumbs up from the kids. And even though it was the pub’s chicken in pajama (aka chicken parmigiana) special for $19 that night, the fellas chose more meaty options of cattleman’s grill and a rather hearty lamb shank, which definitely impressed. For those more interested in their sweet tooth (this could be me), the pub gives you the option to order dessert when choosing your main meal and only pay $5 for it. There was definitely something to keep everyone in the group happy.

This is a film about family relationships but possibly unlike any you've seen previously. Here we have a dysfunctional family eking out a tenuous existence on the outskirts of Tokyo. In order to survive, they steal - a strategy that sort of works until they take in a foundling, a small child abandoned to the cold. This unforeseen incident ultimately reveals a hidden secret, the consequences of which test the bonds that unite them. All of this could be unremarkable if it were not in the skilful hands of Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda. His talent seems to lie in his ability to distance himself from the characters, lending an understated objectivity to his work. And as sometimes happens, it is this very understatement that makes this film so profoundly affecting. The director, who says he based the film on a news story, used to skip classes as a teenager to watch movies so great was his passion for the cinema. It seems to have served him well! Described by one critic as "devastatingly clear-sighted", this film sets out to expose the "dysfunction and hypocrisies" of modern Japan. Come along and decide for yourself if Koreeda has achieved his goal. When: Saturday, April 6 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street, Maleny Food and drinks: Dinner 6-7 pm catered by Wild Rocket, tea/coffee and homemade slice stand, drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm, running time 121 minutes, rating M Cost: Tickets available for members at Maleny Information Centre for $8 or our website www.malenyfilmsociety.info (members may purchase up to two tickets for non-members). Local Heroes 2019 grants Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has announce the successful recipients of the first round of his 2019 Local Heroes grants, with each group receiving $250. They were • Glasshouse Mountains RSL Sub Branch – to help advertise the free CPR training they are offering and to provide refreshments to participants. • Blackall Range Lions Club – the Maleny Blackall Range Lions have grown in number so the club recently decided to sponsor a new club in the north of Blackall Range based in Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton. The grant will help cover set up costs for the new branch. • Maleny Baptist Church’s Mainly Music Maleny program – the grant will provide a shade cover for the playground so that the play equipment and area can be thoroughly enjoyed by sun-safe kids and caregivers. • SCCSA U/16 girls representative soccer team – the girls will use the money to purchase training shirts and offset the costs of a team building day camp.

Andrew Powell presents a cheque to Geoff Runge, the Lions Club president • Obi Art Prize – funds will contribute towards one of the prizes. Mr Powell said these grants were all about supporting local grassroots community groups and amazing individuals. “The $250 sometimes makes all the difference and allows them to host an event, attend an elite sporting event or simply keep on doing what they do. “So don’t miss your opportunity - the next round doesn’t close until Monday, May 27, so head over to my website at http://www.andrewpowell.com.au to apply,â€? he said.

Vegetarian cooking demonstration update Community members recently attended a vegetarian cooking demonstration hosted by the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church. Dr Percy Harrold, the guest speaker, spoke about diabetes as a lifestyle disease and how it can often be managed by simply choosing a healthy diet. The presentation was followed by cooking demonstrations using plant-based foods and natural ingredients. Attendees were treated to tastings of the featured recipes. If you would like to be part of a local vegetarian recipe club, contact Joanne 5494 7228.

From the churches Be still and know that I am God

This line was written by an ancient musician of the Jews (Psalm 46:10). Its message to “be still remains very relevant to us in 21st century Australia. To find time for quiet reflection seems to be harder and harder as we live our busy lives. At a recent training day for those involved in youth ministry we were asked what was the first thing we did in the morning after we woke up. For most of the group, especially the younger ones, it was to reach for their smartphone to reconnect with their social networks and catch up with the news of the day. And immediately the rush of our interconnected, multitasking lives starts. I was in the minority group as the first thing I do most mornings is to feed my cat and then sit with him and watch the sunrise. To find time to be quiet, to be aware of who we are, is something that I believe we all need. In some circles this might be called mindfulness but I would suggest that in the quiet it is possible to sense something that is beyond ourselves

Contributed by Norma McCormack Our new home will be the RSL at 1 Reed Street, Glass House Mountains. The move may have had something to do with extremely hot conditions experienced during the last two meetings in Beerwah. The vote to move to air-conditioned premises was unanimous, taken as we collectively mopped our brows. There is a tinge of regret in moving house but also great optimism for the new experiences we look forward to in Glass House. Last week’s planned outing to the Caloundra lighthouse was called off because of high winds but in the spirit of fun and friendship we enjoyed a great pub lunch in Caloundra. The speaker for our April 10 meeting will be Ivor Northage, the author of an extremely interesting book on the history of the Glass House Mountains from geological times. If you are interested in joining us, contact Norma on 5439 0446.

Dance at Glass House A dance will be held at the Glass House Mountains Community Hall, on Saturday, April 6 from 7.3011.30pm. NV/OT/M. Music by Commodore / Chattanooga. Entry is $10, includes supper, Monte Carlo raffle and lucky door prize. Great atmosphere, all welcome. Proceeds to the community hall fund. Enquiries to Aileen 5496 9349.

Mega car boot sale The final car boot sale will be held at the Landsborough SDA Church, 27 Maleny Street, Landsborough on Sunday, April 14 from 7am-12 noon. Phone 5494 7424 or 0407 142 962 to book a site for $10.

CONDITIONS: To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.

Rev Dr Timothy Nicholson Glasshouse Country Anglican Church and our busy lives. We have the opportunity to sense something that will help us understand who we are and where we are going, something that will help us see the purpose of our relationships and our work. You might not give it a name, but Christians would believe that in the silence we hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. We can find reflective spaces if we are intent on doing so by turning off the smartphone or car radio, or by turning inward when we are engaged in an activity that allows for inner quiet such as commuting on the train or bus, going for a walk or feeding the cat. While we do these things, we can intentionally clear out the complex cobwebs of our daily rushing and turn towards the divine presence within us and around us.

This year at Maleny Wood Expo it’s all about tapping into your creative side. What will you make? There’s an exciting choice of workshops and projects to suit everyone, from age four to 104. Carve a spoon, build a cubby, make a didgeridoo or even create a canoe. Boat builder Brian Jones will be at the expo to assist you and your team in creating a 3.6m hooppine plywood canoe. Seven craft will take shape over the three days of the expo, so get in quick to reserve a spot for your team. If land-based construction is more your style, how about creating your own play space? The expo cubby house workshops will to guide you in making your own wild thing - a bamboo artwork like no other, designed for children's outdoor play, exploration and creative experimentation. Working with bamboo, foraged garden materials, plywood, cord and wire you will make your very own cubby to take home, decorate and enjoy. Japanese Tools Australia will host Japanese woodworking classes taught by Takami Kawai and Dylan Iwakuni from the Suikoushya International Craft School in Kyoto. This will be a unique opportunity to be taught by master craftsmen who will guide students through the process of making their own 70mm Japanese smoothing plane. Why not try your hand at coopering? Coopering workshops will teach the basic techniques of coopering to create a unique wooden bucket, complete with iron hoops and a rope handle.

You will learn how to fashion a stave using hand tools, rough assemble and then shape your bucket using a custom-made hand plane. Spoon carving with Carol Russell is another great way to release your creative side while making something practical. This is an introduction to using carving tools and getting the feel of working with wood by using a roughly cut out spoon blank and carving a spoon of your own design under Carol's tuition. You will learn basic carving techniques as well as design, tool sharpening and whittling techniques. Carving spoons is a great way to get into woodworking and has a strong creative element and plenty of opportunity to create your own style. But beware - it’s highly addictive! There will be many other hands-on opportunities to make Mothers’ Day presents, paper making with plants, make a boomerang, weave with natural fibres, make chopsticks, build a model boat, master some macramé, learn hand carving or make bush critters and jewellery. For some workshops it is best to book beforehand while others will be on the go throughout the expo, so why not explore and see what appeals to the artisan in you. Whatever you choose to do, you will learn some new skills and techniques, take home your unique creation and have fun! Check out the list of workshops on the Maleny Wood Expo website www.malenywoodexpo.com and find your inner maker.

Not long now until Gardening on the Edge

10

OFFERING ALL ASPECTS OF DECORATIVE CONCRETE FINISHES

In the Garden Just a reminder to mark up your diary for the dates of this year’s Gardening on the Edge weekend … which will be on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9. The Maleny Garden Club (who organise this wonderful event) have been hard at work with plans for this year’s event. With six open gardens in and around the local area, and a massive plant and garden expo at the Maleny Showgrounds, it’s definitely one to put into your diary now. It’s only $5 a garden, $13 for three or $25 for all six, and the expo is free entry. One of the great aspects of the event is that the Maleny Garden Club gives all the proceeds from the weekend back to local groups and organisations. So, not only are you getting to see some truly lovely gardens, but you will be supporting local community organisations in the process. This year for the very first time, they have set up a facebook page to help promote what is happening across the weekend, you can check it out at www.facebook.com/gardeningontheedge. See you there on June 8 and 9.

Sport Local success at state championships

Mary Valley Tennis Challenge Contributed by Pauline Fraley Last Sunday marked the first trial game for the new hinterland tennis competition - the Mary Valley Challenge. This social competition consists of teams of three women and three men from the smaller hinterland clubs across a number of facility criteria. The criteria for being involved included, but was not restricted by, having four or less tennis courts and approximately 80 registered players. The tennis clubs contacted included Gherulla, Kandanga, Witta, Landsborough, Glenview, Mapleton, Kin Kin, Pomona, Gympie Queens Park, Wombye and Maleny. However, due to the short turnaround of nominations only three teams were prepared to play for the first match on Sunday. Kandanga and Witta played some very close sets and both teams enjoyed the new format, which comfortably allowed for games to be completed over four hours between 10am and 2pm with time for a social lunch as well. Kandanga (playing

with a last minute injury fill in from Witta) were victorious on the day 7-5 sets. The format for the day was four sets of mixed doubles per person. Sets were first to six but the format of short deuce and a sudden death tiebreak to five points at five games all was well received by all players, adding to the contest on the day. There are only three more rounds to be played in this competition before a gala finals day where all teams will be invited to play regardless of their position on the ladder. The dates for these games are June 16, September 8, November 3 and the gala day on Sunday, November 24. If you are interested in entering a team email Adam Spence at aspence@tennis.com.au. Online nomination forms can be found at www.tennis.com.au/sctl and queries can be directed to Paula Cudmore (Witta Tennis) paula@agricircle.com.au.

Maleny Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Oxenham Tuesday, March 26: Mixed 18-hole single stableford with first place going to Ian Dauth with 42 points, runner up Vivien Powell with 41 points and third Richard Clayton with 40 points. NTPs: 3 - Graham Thompson, 5 - Tom Kennedy, 8 - Dennis O’Neill and 13 - Neil Bamford. Saturday, March 30: The men played their usual monthly medal competition with a nett 18-hole competition. First place went to Billy Perske with 68 nett, runner up Mike Finley with 70 nett and third Ralph Ding with 72 nett on a count back from Thomas Hallam, also with

72 nett. NTPs: 3 - Richard Clayton, 5 - Tom Bertwistle, 8 - Greg Childe–Freeman on the eighth hole and 13 - Gary Wright. The results section last week were a little slim due to the inclement weather but we certainly needed the rain as the gardens were all dehydrated. Come and experience what our Maleny Golf Club has to offer with spirited competitions most days and lots of friendships being forged and golf being played. To book in for a game of golf or for more information visit our website at www.malenygolfclub.com.au.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, March 27: Ladies day, champion fours round two - Marilyn Podmore, Jenny Morris, Wendy Platt and Chris Freshwater defeated Millie Freshwater, Lyn Griffiths, Jenny Hobson and Di Hume 25-22. Lee Meyers, Di Garland, Chris Dougan and Rae Farrell defeated Sally Squires, Noelle Dean, Maz Idle and Marilyn Boulton 35-6. It was a big win but it was great to see all ladies out there giving it a go. Social bowls - Noelene Annakin, Viv James and Ron Wilson defeated Joy Reason, Graham Meyers and Dennis Hume 26-11. Bruce Angus and Ron Rix defeated Lindsay Henderson and Warren Blackbourne 21-17. Thursday, March 28: Social bowls, open pairs - winners with the highest winning margin in either game were Mac Townson and Rob Scullion with + 12. Runners up with the lowest winning margin in either game were T Bone and Phil Siggers. Lucky draw went to Chris Dougan and Jimmy Tatum. They were the second card drawn out as not all team members were present in the

first draw and had already left for home. Full green plus already this week so some triples will be played again. The ladies financial day will be on Monday, April 11 with both women and men welcome. Morning tea will be at 9am for a game of bowls at 9.30am. There will be lunch, prizes and raffles. Please put your name down on the board in the bowls section. Kerry Capern day on Sunday was another huge success. It was great to see a full green of bowlers with many visiting teams attending. Winners with two wins + 27 margin were Eileen Pierce, Chris Dougan, Mac Townson and Rob Scullion. Runners up were David Hayes, Jack Chirgwin, Bill Tumbridge and Paul Chirgwin with two wins + 18 margin. Third prize went to Sally Squires, Maz Idle, Ann White and Warren Blackbourne along with Noelle Dean with two wins + 8 margin. Contributed by Tina Grieve Glasshouse District Little Athletics Club recently took 28 young athletes to Townsville for the annual Little Athletics Queensland State Championships. Over three long hot days the athletes competed against the best in the state and achieved great results with lots of personal bests, finals qualifications, top ten placings and five athletes - Darby Small, Emma Small, Spencer Doneman, Tamara Taripo and Sophie Trevan achieving top three placings and medals. During the championships, the George Harvey Leadership Award is also presented to one female and one male athlete statewide across the 15-17year age groups. Each Little Athletics club nominates a female and a male athlete for this award each year with the state committee then choosing who will receive the award. The award honours the first lifetime Little Athletics member, George Harvey, and is presented to those athletes who best demonstrate they embrace the ideals of Little Athletics. This year Glasshouse District Little Athletics nominated their amazing and dedicated team captains, Spencer Doneman and Sophie Trevan for the award. The club was extremely honoured to have Sophie (pictured), from Landsborough, awarded the female George Harvey Leadership Award, with Kobe Higgins from Mudgeeraba club taking out the male award. This is an amazing achievement and a wonderful testament to Sophie's 11 years with Glasshouse District Little Athletics and a fantastic way to end her Little Athletics years. It was very well deserved with Sophie always going out of her way to mentor and encourage the younger athletes in the club. Congratulations Sophie.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails and Whistlers were both washed out while the Wildcats travelled to Coolum to compete against the top team. It was close all day with the lead changing after every set. At the end of the day Pauline Fraley, Jenie Riding, Libby Howlett and Jo Williams fell five games short. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday at 1pm. All welcome. Court bookings can be made via 0437 295 501 or www. wittatennis.com.au.

Landsborough cross country

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Kylie Merola Monday, March 25 saw Landsborough State School host its annual cross country event. Students ran races in their respective age groups in an endeavour to be selected in the school team to compete at the district carnival at St Michael’s College on Friday, April 26. Students from all year levels had the chance to race for participation and fun. At the end of the day the overall winning house for 2019 was Flinders. It was an excellent day. The next Landsborough carnival is the athletics carnival on Friday, May 3 at Skippy Park.

Contributed by Miles Allen Our monthly pair’s competition was held on Monday, March 27 with players from Mapleton, Kilcoy, Woodford and Caboolture Lakes joining us for a very pleasant social afternoon chasing the big prize money. Each pair played two games and the day’s winners, the team from Kilcoy, had two wins and the highest number of points. Runners up were one of the Maleny teams. The monthly jackpot is in four figures but no team was able to claim it. Maleny Bowls Club has an enviable reputation for providing delicious lunches and afternoon teas. This month Kay Gesch, with the help of other members again maintained our reputation. Eager tasters arrived early to ensure the food was of the highest quality for our visitors and Relma Godfrey again supplied her delicious pumpkin scones. After a very busy time at the club in the previous week, we were able to take it a bit easier last week due to the rain. We have a big advantage with our artificial green in that it drains and dries out a lot quicker than if it was grass. Although it doesn’t need cutting (surprise surprise!) it does need cleaning and rolling. The weather on Friday was perfect for our weekly Scroungers competition. The threat of rain didn’t deter us from turning up to chase the jack. The winners were Kathy King, Joe Walters, Don Ginns, Brett Gillis and Mick Bulger. Last week we had 60 visitors using the club for a large function. As one of them said: “This club has everything you need for a get-together for friends, for businesses, for colleagues and for any occasion when you want great service and great facilities at a reasonable price. And of course you can also have a lot of fun on the green.” It seems as though some cooler weather is on its way so we might see even more players this week, particularly those who don’t like it too hot.

Contributed by Ken Baker Bev Sockhill and Vince Carbery teamed up last Thursday to play a friendly game against Sally Adams and Gillian Bradley with no scores recorded. However, it was noted that Bev peeled for the first time in her playing career. This feat is carried out by putting your partner’s ball through its hoop when it is not the striker ball (the ball that you are hitting with your mallet). Saturday, March 23 saw Donna Manning and Sarah Widin in a coaching session preparing for the pennants season, which will be upon us next month. Sunday, March 24 saw a pleasant return to form by Nick Cram who played well to beat Ken Barker 18-7. Both are preparing for the Sunshine Coast regional tournament, with their game to be played on our lawns on April 9-10. Spectators are welcome. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays at 2.10pm for a 2.30pm start. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Temperament: Koda is a lovely girl, a little shy at times, but has a gentle temperament. She needs a quieter home, perhaps with a retired person or couple. Koda seems to be OK around most dogs she meets, but may prefer to live as the only dog. This girl enjoys her daily walks and is quite light on leash.

Just for Laughs Perfect hearing, perfect life?

An elderly patient gets hearing aids from a doctor. After a short time he meets the doctor again. Doctor: “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased.” Patient: “Oh, I am in a funny situation now. I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit and listen to their conversations. In a month, I’ve changed my will three times!”

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 There is an aspect this week with Mercury and Neptune. Mercury has now gone direct and you might find you love moments in solitude. The New Moon in Aries focuses on creating your future. Get ready to do research and problem solving as the planets move into position to guide your thought processes now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The planet Mars affects most communications this week and since that is a war-like energy, just make sure you try your hardest to quell controversial remarks. Other planets are highlighting productive energies for travel and the New Moon comes up this week to offer insights into others’ needs. Beautiful fragrances enhance life. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 This is a week to replace broken items and a Jupiter vibration from that planet offers new experiences. Under an upbeat Mars vibration, you have a few days of good accomplishments. Even the planet Venus sends good light into your career sector. Maybe a financial conflict between you, the tax office or a financial institution. CANCER June 24 - July 22 An intelligent acquaintance suggests attending a musical or an arts and crafts event. Do act on your hunches as the Neptune influence gives benefit to your psychic powers. The arrangement between Jupiter and Mars may see you being tempted to have another gamble. Contrary forces undermine a big project or efforts to get support.

A man who makes coffins for a living had his vehicle break down on a delivery. Not wanting to be late, he decided to put the coffin on his head and walk. A policeman stopped him and asked what he was doing and where he was going. He said: “I don’t like where they buried me so I am relocating.” The policeman fainted.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 As there is a Pisces Moon beginning this week Mars enters to affect family dynamics. Encourage everyone to voice themselves honestly. With the Aries New Moon arriving this week it brings enjoyable leisure hours. The planet Uranus comes in unexpectedly disrupting daily routine. So this week you must try hard to be more flexible. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Neptune brings hidden meanings into many messages coming to you by phone or email. Perhaps it is time to review past experiences as history tends to repeat itself. Mars comes into your chart to bolster your confidence but beware of overdoing it, especially if you’re at the gym. Younger people offer you different values. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Romantic energies surround you so perhaps consider seeing a good movie! Remember to take your turn in an effort to please others. The planet Pluto and the Aries New Moon bring an invitation to go on an outing. Then the Moon and Uranus create a stir in your home sector. Items may need more repair or replacement now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 There is a good possibility of travel as the Moon joins up with Mercury. This usually supports efforts for shorter journeys than overseas. The New Aries Moon on the 6th favours financial planning. After that a strong Saturn reinforces friendships, improving your living situation will be your focus. Share meals with special friends.

The coffin maker’s dilemma

LEO July 23 – August 22 Some of your cherished goals are activated in April now that the planet Mercury moves forward in direct motion. The Moon brings colour into your life and much spirituality with the help of Jupiter. This helps you in your meditation and to explore your inner purpose. Mars and the Moon combine to focus on your choices now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The month begins with you in a whimsical mood as a Pisces Moon is very strong. Heed your psychic instincts. The New Moon accents your monetary concerns about any investments. You should find the goodwill of a special companion or even much benefit coming from others. See if you can act on a new budget in a new way. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Past confusion in your life dissipates under the clarifying influence of the planet Pluto. When Mars comes in the visit of a helpful person appears at the right time. Much needed chores need your attention and attempt this challenging time in the morning. You may have to get down to brass tacks concerning the family. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The planets are indicating you should be in some form of recreation, so encourage yourself in a non-stressful sport. There is a Mars influence, strengthening motivation so that as the New Moon arrives you are to review your health habits. Someone close to you exhibits surprising accomplishments. Early hours are productive.
