Hi Everyone On Saturday I popped along to the open day at Landsborough’s Skippy Park – and while I didn’t see any kangaroos lazing about, there were hundreds of little people making the most of the day. And when I say little people – I mean children, they were everywhere and having a lovely time and strangely there wasn’t an x-box or Nintendo DS, computer, or a TV screen in sight. I hear lots of people say – in my day kids spent their time outside, making their own fun - well that was pretty much what was happening on Saturday, the kids were embracing what we now call a ‘nature based playground’. There is a massive old tree frame for climbing on, rocks that can be crawled over, sand that can be jumped into, and a lovely grassy hill that can be rolled down, along with
a great 1.3km track for riding their bike or scooter on. And while there was plenty of little people, there was lots of grownups there as well, mums, dads, nannas and poppies and quite a few four legged locals who came on their leashes and were very well behaved (the dogs that is, not the nannas and poppies). See photos from the day on page 10. Regards,

Presenting our past Bankfoot House, the oldest surviving building in the Glasshouse Mountains district, this week, received a funding boost to the tune of $1 million from Council’s Cultural Heritage Capital Program. The landmark building, located at 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains, received Council endorsement of the proposal to invest $1 million over two years towards preserving the museum collection at Bankfoot House and improving the visitor experience. Through the Cultural Heritage Levy, this financial year, $100,000 will go towards the design and documentation phase of Stage 1 of the planned works for Bankfoot House. A proposal for a further $900,000 will fund the building phase (Stage 2) in 2012-13, with the amount to be determined during the course of Stage 1. A further $20,000 has been allocated for general building maintenance and preservation works this year. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz, said council recognises the significant role Bankfoot

Daffodil Day volunteers urgently needed Most people know someone who has been touched by cancer in some way. Glenda Halpin, from Beerwah, lost her mum seven years ago from bowel, liver and lung cancer. “She was diagnosed at 80 and never smoked or drank,” said Glenda. Ever since then, Glenda has been the local Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day co-ordinator. This year’s Daffodil Day will run from Thursday, August 25 to Saturday, August 27. Glenda needs at least 24 volunteers per day to help run the stalls outside Woolworths Beerwah, IGA Beerwah, IGA Glass House and IGA Landsborough. Two people for each stall are required for three hour shifts from 8.30am to 11.30am, 11.30am to 2.30pm and 2.30pm to 5.30pm. The stalls will be offering fresh daffodils, pens, earrings, badges, bulldog clips, superhero teddy

Bankfoot House’ had seen a great deal of work done to preserve the buildings and collections. Ron Gillinder, Presidents of the Friends of Bankfoot House, said the funding signifies the ability to return components of the structure to the original intent of the dedicated spaces. “For instance, the space currently utilised by volunteers as a work room for necessary tasks, such as collating and record storage, needs to be alleviated of such; we therefore welcome the funding which allows Bankfoot House to have a separate, stand alone, volunteer work space with necessary ablution facilities,” Ron explains. “Currently we have neither official vehicular access nor parking bays and, importantly with no disability access we have made this a priority to address. Any such changes will be in keeping with the overall look and period design of the facility. “Once such changes occur and deficiencies are remedied, we will find the opportunity to offer regular tours to the public which is something we have always been eager to do. This funding will make things so much easier to operate in the interests of both volunteers and the public,” he said.

bears and more. All money raised from the stalls goes directly to the Cancer Council to help continue vital research, prevention programs and support services for patients and their families. Glenda’s mum is always in her thoughts on Daffodil Day. “And many people - friends and others - have been lost through cancer as well. So this is my way of helping,” she said. Glenda would like to encourage people to volunteer. “It’s amazing who you meet and also you’re helping a worthy cause. There’s no greater killer than cancer. I do appreciate the people that do help me.” Each year locals show their generosity by helping to raise around $10,000. “But whatever we get we’ll be grateful for,” Glenda said. So if you can’t volunteer, please dig deep instead. Every little bit means a cure for cancer is one step closer. Many local business and shops will also have Daffodil Day merchandise available. If you would like to volunteer please ring Glenda on 0412 606 655. If you would like to help at Mooloolah please phone Veronica on 0437 399 950.
with children’s feet
Did you know that early assessment of your children’s feet by a Podiatrist can prevent or minimise various foot conditions such as arthritis, bunion pain and muscular pain in later life? These conditions can be due to the alignment and structure of our feet in our younger years. Therefore, prevention is definately a ‘step in the right direction’ for getting your child off to a great start in life.

Happy birthday Rita Last Saturday the family and friends of Rita Mabel Beanland gathered at Glass House Mountains School of Arts Hall to help Rita celebrate her 100th birthday. Rita said it was wonderful to celebrate her 100th birthday with her family and friends. Her tips for living a long life include hard work and having good genes. But Rita believes family is a very important part of life and “one must always enjoy family as often as possible.” Over the years Rita has enjoyed spending time with all her family which includes five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Rita was born at her parent’s Mt Mee property on July 30, 1911, the fourth of nine children of Harry and Lena Thomason. Rita’s granddaughter, Glass House Mountains local Rita Moffatt said, “hard work was something gran learnt as she grew up in Mt Mee.” Rita met and married Archibald George Beanland in 1930. For a short time they lived at Mt Mee, from there they moved to Peachester before they moved to their Dairy farm at Bald Knob, Maleny where they lived for 40 years. Rita worked alongside her husband running the dairy farm and raising their children Stella (Dec), Reginald, and Pamela. Rita made all her own bread and preservatives such as jam and preserved fruit. Rita also churned her own butter with a butter churner. Rita taught herself how to sew and made many of her children’s clothes. She is also an accomplished piano player and a keen gardener creating beautiful gardens at Maleny, then later at Glass House Mountains where they moved into 1979 after Archie retired.
Rita nursed her husband after he had many small strokes. He died in 1987. Rita (granddaughter) has many wonderful memories of ‘gran’ and remembers how hard she used to work. “I remember when gran did the washing, she would put the copper on and boil her water for the washing machine and while it was boiling and before she carried this water by the bucketfuls to her machine she would shave soap into the water, this was her washing
powder. Once the machine had washed the clothes, gran would put them through the wringer to wring out the water before putting them into the blue rinse water in her laundry tubs. From here it would get wrung again before it was taken to the line to be hung out. Something I also remember is how she would like to watch her ABC program Bellbird when it was on. I am very proud to be her granddaughter and to share her name Rita.”

Peachester School Jubilee Contributed by Helen Page
Peachester History Committee
As Peachester State School celebrates its centenary this year, it is an opportunity to reflect on changes in the district and in education since this area was first settled in the 1880s. The nearest school for some years was at Coochin Creek (established 1888), so education for pioneering families at ‘The Peach Trees’ involved a difficult journey down the range. A Provisional School was established in the Peachester Hall in 1892; and it served the growing community until the present State School was opened in 1911. The district’s pride in its school was evident in the Nambour Chronicle report of the Golden Jubilee function in 1961, attended by over 400 people. The official opening speech by the Premier, local Member of Parliament Mr Frank Nicklin (later Sir Francis), sums up the significance of the celebration. “Peachester State School has played no small part in assisting in the development of the area ... We should not forget the pioneers who came here when this district was covered with scrub and timber. It is good to see so many of their descendents here," he said. "If it had not been for the sacrifices of the pioneers the people of today would not have the Jubilee. We must ‘dip our hats’ to those who gave us so much.” “You have seen tremendous development in Queensland. We have an education system of which we can be proud. When we think of the conditions that prevailed in 1892 and think that today our children are picked up and carried to a secondary school, we realise we have come a long way in the past 50 years.” Mr G Walker (Chairman) said that some people had travelled a long way to attend the function and meet their old school friends. Twenty-eight teachers and 714 pupils had passed through the school. The old building had been renovated and a new classroom and a staff room added. There were now two teachers and an enrolment of 53 pupils. The school possessed a tennis court, film projector, duplicator and a library as well as many other amenities. After lunch, Mr Nicklin observed that he could almost say he was an old pupil of Peachester as he came to the district about the same time the school started but lived a few miles away. He added that he knew many of the old pupils personally as well as officially. Fifty years ago no one would have thought it possible to see so many cars as there were that day. (Excerpts from report in The Nambour Chronicle, April 7, 1961) Planning is well under way for a Centennial Fete at the Peachester School and Hall on Saturday, October 15. For information please contact P&C President, Louise Lewis (5494 9621), or Secretary, Margie Jennings (5494 9083).

Interact at Beerwah High Teenagers are often generalised as being selfish, self-absorbed and only interested in their own needs and wants, but a group of Beerwah High State School students are proving that perception totally wrong. Around 20 students from across all year levels belong to Interact which is part of the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains. The students meet once a week during their lunchtime with the aim of undertaking projects to serve their community. Their latest project was to organise ‘letters to an unknown soldier.’ Interact organised the writing of more than 40 letters by Year 8, 9 and 10 students to send to soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Camillah Maynard, President of Interact at Beerwah High said, “I thought it was a good opportunity for them to know who we are, and for us to thank them for everything.”
Helen Weil, teacher and Interact co-ordinator, the Interact Students, and Kay Farrell, Interact co-ordinator and President of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch Ladies Auxiliary
Emily Wheeler from Year 8 said she wanted to join Interact to help people and be part of the community. “The letters were a good idea because I think they (the soldiers) feel that people look up to them and hope to be a bit like them in bravery and courage,” she said. Kay Farrell, President of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub Branch Ladies Auxiliary, started Interact within the school six months ago. “They are a great bunch of kids. These kids can be called on to do jobs that normally Rotary people would do - we try to include our kids to make them better citizens as they get older,” Kay said. Kay was impressed with the sentiments expressed in the letters to the soldiers such as, ‘I feel so safe because you’re over there.’ ‘We’re so proud of you.’ ‘I admire you so much, I think you’re brave.’ ‘Can’t wait to join the army and be like you.’ Interact has also been a part of other community events including marching on ANZAC Day,
helping at the Garden Expo, and providing face painting on Charity Sports Day. They will also be holding a disco to raise money for Interact which will be used for more community projects. More students are always welcome to join Interact. “It’s about helping people and having fun,” Camillah said.
Progress is well under way with the new Overnight Respite facility at the Centre. Our tiler Trevor Woodcock has completed the tiling of our large shower facility which looks a million dollars and our Plumber Allan Koshel will complete the fit out of taps and Shower Regulator. All going to plan we should be in a position to have Clients in the Cottage very early in August. Regrettable we have had a few items stolen from the Centre in the past month, to assist in combating this problem; we have engaged the services of our local Locksmith, Adrian Korst. He has re keyed the whole centre and maybe this will assist in curbing such activity. We would always remind readers that Glasshouse Care is always available anytime to provide assistance with Transport and Home Assistance, just a simple phone call on 5494 6948 speak to Ann or Tricia. Till next week, regards Alan Mountain.

‘Breast’ Ever Brunch
The ‘Chicks in Pink’ hope to raise $50,000.00 through their new fundraising campaign — the Breast Ever Brunch. Queenslanders are encouraged to get together with their ‘breast’ friends, family or colleagues this August to help Chicks in Pink support women with breast cancer.
Keeping in touch with skype – easy and free! We have a lot of clients who happily use Skype. For those who would like to get on board but are unsure how, here is a quick outline. Skype is now owned by Microsoft, however you still need to download specific software, easily found by searching ‘Skype’ on the internet. Once you download and install Skype, you will be prompted to create an account (a unique name which will be known as your ‘Skype Phone Number’) and a password (write it down, keep it safe). If you have a webcam connected to your computer you can video call people in your contact list - if you have family or friends overseas or interstate, you can talk ‘face to face’! These calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world are free! If your computer or laptop doesn't have a webcam, these can be purchased cheaply, and plugged into your USB port; a webcam with built in microphone is best. We have some more links and tips about Skype on our website http://www.mooloolahpc.com.au For inquiries, help or advice, call Gus at Mooloolah Computers on 0405 125 662. You can also use Skype on your smart phone - another column needed for that!
Have a glorious brunch this August and fundraise with your ‘breast’ friends to support Chicks in Pink and Mater
Each year more than 700 breast cancer patients from all locations are treated at Mater Hospital. Chicks in Pink provides an immediate benefit to breast cancer patients through practical, tangible and relevant services at Mater with psychologists, occupational therapists, parenting support groups, mastectomy bras, research and much more.
619
This year on Sunday, August 7, to coincide with International Sisters’ Day, Chicks in Pink are calling on women across Queensland to host their Breast Ever Brunch and help support women with breast cancer. Mater wants to help women with breast cancer do what they do best: be a woman—a mother, wife, daughter, sister, girlfriend. We want to help them laugh, cry and feel feminine, even though for some it may feel like the very essence of their femininity has been taken away from them. In helping, you will help celebrate with those who have won the battle, support those whose journey has just begun, and remember loved ones who have lost their fight with breast cancer. You will also be supporting ground-breaking research and innovative programs at Mater. With your help, the Breast Ever Brunch can raise vital funds to help Chicks in Pink to continue to support services to women with breast cancer both during and after their treatment, and to fund vital research at Mater. So how can you help? It’s simple. Have brunch with your colleagues, friends or family, sell Chicks in Pink merchandise or simply collect donations and celebrate what it means to be `breast’ friends. Register your Breast Ever Brunch event today at www.materfoundation.org.au To help you get your fundraising started, the first 50 people to register will be provided with their very own Chicks in Pink raffle kit, which includes a Chicks in Pink towel set, kindly provided by Adcall Promotions or a gift voucher from the Cupcake Parlour and a book of raffle tickets.

Not at home on Census night?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is encouraging everyone in Australia, including those travelling within Australia or working on Census night, Tuesday, August 9 to accurately complete a Census form. Head of the Census Population program, Paul Lowe says the Census counts everyone in Australia on Census night whether they are working, partying or at home. “If you can’t fill out a Census form on the night of August 9, fill it out as soon as possible and answer the questions as if it were Census night,” Mr Lowe says. The Census is a snapshot of the nation and counts people where they are on Census night. If you’re staying with relatives or friends on Census night, make sure you’re included on their form. If someone in your household is staying somewhere else on Census night, they should only be included in question 53 which asks about people who are absent. For the household member away from home, they should complete a Census form where they are staying on Census night to ensure they are counted. If you are
staying with friends or relatives temporarily, you should be included on their Census form. You can also ask your Collector or the call the Census Inquiry Service if you need more forms. If you’re travelling remotely on Census night and will be sleeping or camping, ‘off the beaten track’ collection points with Census packs are available – their locations are available by visiting www.abs.gov.au/censushelp or calling the Census Inquiry Service on 1300 338 776. If you’re staying at a hotel, motel, hostel or any other type of accommodation service provider, they will have either a Census form or eCensus information which will allow you to complete the Census online. If you are overseas on Census night, you do not need to complete the Census. If there is no one staying at your house on Census night, you should call the CIS on 1300 338 776 so we can inform your Census Collector. More information is available online at www.abs.gov.au/census Key Census dates August 9 – Census night and from August 10 – Collection of Census forms.

Market Day at Mooloolah
Glasshouse Country Anglican Church members, who worship at St. Thomas’ Mooloolah, organised a Market Day in the Mooloolah Hall on July 16. Although it rained, it was voted a success, and the stall holders are keen to have it repeated in two months time. It will be in September but the date has yet to be decided. Stay tuned to GCNews for the Market Day updates.
Open Day at Skippy Park Last Saturday Council invited locals along to an Open Day at Skippy Park on Old Landsborough Road, at Landsborough.

It’s one thing to be good at sport; it’s another to do so well that you win competitions. As Madison Thompson and Taylor Stickler found out recently, being recognised by your Federal Member of Parliament for these achievements is a whole new ball game! The Year 6 students at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School recently received signed letters from Wyatt Roy himself, inviting them and their families to the Longman Community Awards presentation, held at the Caboolture RSL. These awards recognise community service and achievement, and the girls had both been nominated and selected as finalists in the area of sport achievement. Madison had swum in all nine events at the Primary School State Championships for swimming, and placed third in the 50 metre freestyle. She will be swimming at the Nationals in Melbourne later this year. Taylor is the Queensland State Champion for the Under 11’s Surf Life Saving, beach sprint. Her team won the bronze medal for the beach sprint relay, and Taylor also placed fourth in the beach flags and sixth in the surf teams final. Both girls were ecstatic about receiving their Longman’s Awards for being finalists. For both, it’s yet another achievement in what they both hope will end up being a long list of them!

Vicious Vintage at Mooloolah recently had a lady shopping on the premises that led business owner Judy to a huge act of charity. “The lady was a long way from home visiting friends in Mooloolah and we got talking about how she works in a community in the Northern Territory know as the Galiwinku Community on Elcho Island. The people there have little or no clothing and very few donations given from around Australia,” Judy said. “She explained that the community was so poor they found it really difficult to function normally.” In response to this conversation, Judy donated six massive bags of men’s and kids’ clothing, even going back to her own house to ensure that the lady received bedding to take back. If anyone would like to donate quality clothing or bedding please call in to Vicious Vintage at Mooloolah on Connection Road where Judy will be happy to take your donation.

How to make a great first impression From time to time we all have to meet new people. During those moments, you may not consciously think about making a good first impression. However consciously or not, you always make an impression. Sometimes, you may want to make more than just an impression, you’ll want to make it a great impression. Let’s look how we can achieve this. Relax. You want the new client, you want the job, you want the date – whatever the situation is, take the pressure off of yourself! Think about it. You can tell when people are anxious or nervous; does it make you more attractive to them? No, it doesn’t. Relax and just be yourself. Smile. Few things are more attractive than a real smile, it doesn’t matter if you are young or old, smiles make a difference. Let people know that you are happy to meet them before a word is said. Use a good handshake. This simply can’t be overlooked. A good handshake says things about you that words never can. Make sure your handshake will be a hand shake, not a finger or palm shake. Make eye contact. This is incredibly important. Everyone has heard it, everyone 'knows' it, but far too many people don’t do it. Be genuine and real. Be yourself. Be natural. After all, you want people’s impression to be of who you really are, not of some mask you have created. Be interested, not interesting. This turn of words is powerful. Often making a great first impression is equated with impressing people. While that is true, most think about impressing people as being about showing what we know, who we know, or what we’ve done. You will make a more powerful and lasting impression when you don’t try so hard. Ask more say less. You will show your interest in the other person by asking more questions and talking less. When you ask, you are signalling interest and who doesn’t like it when people want to know more about them? Be confident. Being confident coupled with being relaxed lead to a projected self-assurance that is both interesting and attractive. Don’t try too hard, I don’t say overconfident or cocky. Be present. Being present means not looking for the next hand to shake, not thinking about your own issues or deciding how to move on. It is about the person you are meeting. Remember, it isn’t about you. Make the encounter as much about the other person as possible and you will make great first impressions most of the time. Glasshouse Country Toastmasters meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month in the hall of the Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah. Call us on either 5496 9855 or 5493 0650. You can also find us on the web, Google - Glasshouse Country Toastmasters.

Koala research towards a cure
Research into koala disease is one step closer to finding a cure following a local fundraiser organised by one passionate volunteer at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Phil Siggers raised an amazing $1,068.00 through his fundraising raffle, with all money raised going toward research into koala disease. Koala disease is one of the most threatening contributors to the wild koala population decline, along with habitat loss and fragmentation, car accidents and dog attacks. According to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital general manager Gail Gipp, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital has treated almost 800 koalas in the past 12 months, many of whom were suffering from a variety of diseases. “Koala chlamydiosis causes blindness, infertility, urinary tract infection (cystitis) and kidney failure, and sometimes pneumonia and flu-like syndromes,” Gail said. “There is also an increasing prevalence of koalas arriving at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital suffering from leukaemia, bone marrow failure, cancers and immunodeficiency syndrome. All of these diseases are suspected to be associated with a koala retrovirus infection (KoRV), which is similar to human AIDS.” The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, with the help of Australia Zoo’s annual $2.5 million funding, is committed to advancing vital research into koala disease in association with the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology. The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital would like to thank the many local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle, as well as those that bought tickets. You can donate to koala research online by visiting www.everydayhero.com.au/event/koala To become a volunteer at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, email info@wildlifewarriors. org.au. Call 1300 369 652 for all wildlife emergencies.

Beerwah Writers Group
At our recent meeting we discussed various methods of formatting our forthcoming anthology and the possible publishing alternatives. This led to consideration of our involvement in an ‘Author’s Fair Day’ at Maroochydore in November. Some previously written short stories have been expanded with greater emphasis on description and dialogue. As they were read, Joan displayed her dialogue skills, Barbara and Patricia showed their knowledge of descriptions and Steve left us eager to discover what his main character would do next. Kerry enlarged on the continuing tale of the tribulations of a bathroom towel. ‘Nothing is what it seems’ conveyed Kate’s command of intrigue. We continue to provide opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback. Meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Next meeting is on Friday, August 12. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, you will find a friendly welcome in this group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. Refreshments are provided for a small donation. Guests and visitors welcomed. Membership fee is $5.00 per year. For further information telephone John 5493 0624.

I wanted to write about an experience I had only July 28 at our newly opened ALDI store in Beerwah. My young son and I arrived there at 8.00am (a full half an hour before the store opened) in the hope of getting a television that was advertised in their current catalogue. Imagine our surprise to find about 12 others queued up before us. Obviously everyone has an eye for a bargain! During the course of our wait, I struck up a conversation with a younger girl, possibly in her early 20’s, who was waiting with her partner’s ‘Pop’ to also secure a TV. She offered to help me since I had my son with me and we expected the box to be quite big. During this time the queue
behind us continued to grow quite dramatically and an older couple moved towards the trolley collection area very close to the front door (in front of all of us). They proceeded to collect their trolley and then stayed put right where they were - ‘jumping the queue’ so to speak. Well let me tell you that there was quite an amount of disgust and annoyance quietly directed at them from all members of the crowd, including my young three-year-old son who clearly recognised what was going on and angrily said “they pushed in!” A few moments later the doors opened and these two blithely walked in, unconcerned at their rudeness. We did secure our television, as did the young girl and her ‘Pop’, along with the pushy couple. However the purpose of my letter is to draw attention to the rudeness of this couple of our older generation so that perhaps they may reflect on their behaviour, but mostly to show that the younger generation, who are so constantly denigrated are quite lovely and helpful! The young girl who I had mentioned earlier (a complete stranger whom I had only met half an hour earlier) assisted me finding a television, helped me to load it into my trolley and stayed with me supporting the very heavy and awkward box right through the registers. She then helped me to load it into my vehicle, no easy feat I might add since it was such a big box! It was only at this time that I thought to introduce myself and say ‘thankyou’. I hope you read this Perry-Lee and realise what a lovely young adult you are. I wish you all the best-you certainly made my morning! L.Pollock, Glass House Mountains
Bronwyn Bishop guest at Beerwah breakfast
Bronwyn Bishop was a special guest at a breakfast held at Gowinta Farms at Beerwah last Friday. The visit to the area by Mrs Bishop was organised by local Member for Fisher Peter Slipper. Around 40 local residents, business people and LNP members attended the breakfast. Mrs Bishop spoke of the carbon tax and its effect on seniors and also noted that seniors make up 40 per cent of the public so are a powerful community group that should be listened to. Mrs Bishop was also key speaker at the 11th annual Sunshine Coast Seniors’ Forum, organised by Peter Slipper and the Fisher Seniors’ Council, which this year attracted some 250 guests.

Beauty is Pure Bliss! Pure Bliss Beauty is true to its name with owner and professionally trained beautician, Laura Hermansen, offering a mobile service which includes facials, massages, waxing, tinting, spray tanning, gel and acrylic nails and eyelash extensions. Operating across the entire hinterland area, Laura said her business has literally taken off since opening at the beginning of this year. Living and having previously worked in Beerwah, Laura knows the area well and has a variety of clients from the elderly through to people with children at home. “I like to offer a service that fits in with people who don’t have time to go out or find it’s too complicated to organise things in order to book into a salon, Laura said. Laura, who contains her mobile beauty salon in her compact car says, “I even carry my massage table with me all the time. “In terms of operating hours I do Saturdays until 12.00noon by appointment and am happy to go from 8.00am to 8.00pm every day of the week. In addition to the hinterland, I cover Caboolture and the entire Sunshine Coast. “I also have decent prices and a great clientele
base, she adds. Laura even has bookings where people get together at one house to see friends at the same time. “They might all book in for nails, waxing or more. Group spray tans have also worked a treat, one at a time of course and it all becomes pretty much a pamper party! Laura can also provide a price list on request, and offers a 10 per cent discount on first bookings. Living Well Put some spring into your step Take a journey through the wildflowers at Ewen Maddock Dam on Tuesday, August 30 from 9.00am to 11.00am as part of this year’s Sunshine Coast Spring Wildflowers Festival. Be amazed at this stunning explosion of nature at its best by taking part in this free guided walk, which is just one of the many on offer across the Coast throughout the festival. Bookings are open now and essential. Interested walkers can book through council’s online events calendar. Environment Portfolio Holder Cr Keryn Jones said the festival was an opportunity to learn more about the native beauty in our backyard. “These free guided walks showcase the best the Coast has to offer, resulting in an all round appreciation for our native, natural environment,” Cr Jones said. “The festival provides a range of opportunities to explore and experience – with a little expert guidance – the diversity of native flowering plants found in our local ecosystem. “Walking with people who know what to look for, provides exposure to some real local treasures that we might otherwise walk right on by without noticing or appreciating. “In late August, you can see some amazing displays of colour; it really is nature’s own garden expo. “All walks are free and expertly led thanks to a large number of volunteer groups who partner with Sunshine Coast Council to make the event possible.” Download a program from council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or pick up a copy from one of council’s customer service counters and secure your place today. For bookings and Information on the Ewen Maddock Dam work contact the Wildlife Preservation Society 5444 2707.

Keep winter weight away Queensland Health is offering a program to help people achieve a healthier lifestyle and keep their weight in check during the chilly winter months. ‘Lighten Up’ program coordinator Kerry Roach said gaining excess weight increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. “Don’t use the cold winter weather as an excuse to give up on exercise or make unhealthy food choices,” she said. “If you need some help keeping your health on track, sign up for the Lighten Up program. Lighten Up is a healthy lifestyle program aimed at motivating people towards better eating, exercise and relaxation habits. Two courses will kick off soon, the first in Kawana on Wednesday, August 31 (6.00pm - 8.00pm) and the second in Maleny on Friday, September 16 (9.30am - 11.30am). ‘Lighten Up’ helps participants to 1) develop a healthy attitude to eating, 2) prepare and enjoy healthy food, 3) fit physical activity in their day, 4) manage stress, 5) set realistic, achievable goals and 6) make long-term behaviour changes to support a healthy lifestyle. “Most people join the program with the aim of losing weight and whilst some are successful, they more importantly learn to ditch the diet mentality, prioritise their health and set realistic and achievable health goals,” Kerry said. The program encourages eating everything in moderation, finding activities that you can enjoy regularly and developing an awareness and acceptance of unhealthy habits and their triggers. “Increased energy, vitality, motivation, sleep, self-confidence, pride, selfawareness and libido are among the many behaviour changes reported by those who have completed the program.” The cost of the program is $20.00 and involves participants in attending a two-hour workshop once a fortnight for 14 weeks. Multi-draw raffle for Beerwah Charity Sports This year the major raffle running in conjunction with the Sports Day features three main prizes. They are a garden cart filled with all sorts of products, a ‘Jack and Jill’ outdoor setting and third, a home entertainment unit. The holder of the ticket drawn first will have first choice of the three; the holder of the second draw a choice of two and the third drawer will receive the remaining item. Tickets are only $2.00 and are already being sold around the district. Additionally there will be a stall outside Woolies each Friday from now until the Sports Day where you can buy your tickets. And of course, tickets will be on sale on Beerwah Charity Sports Day, Saturday, August, 27 at the Beerwah Sportsground, when the raffle will be drawn. A ‘first’ for this year is a dedicated second-hand book stall; so if your bookshelves are overflowing and you want to make room for some new books, then here’s your chance to do so. Ring Kev Wrayford on 5494 9635 or mobile 0428 720 326 and he will arrange to pick them up. Just another great way to help Cancer Council Queensland. www.gcnews.com.au

From Anna Grosskreutz Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Ph: 5420 8987
Budget Announcement - Maintenance Seal Gravel Roads
For many years prior to the amalgamated Council, I used divisional funds to seal our gravel roads. Under our larger council structure your Hinterland Councillors with support from the City have been able to obtain a separate budget line item for the continuation of the sealing of these dusty roads. I would expect this to continue into the future with new councillors maintaining the same focus on our behalf. In this financial year the council will be sealing the following roads; Anderson Road, Glass House Mountains, $30k - Link route between Johnstone Road and Steve Irwin Way Johnstone Road, Glass House Mountains, $70k - Seal gravel road Moffats Road Glass House Mountains, $30k - Link route between Johnstone Road and Steve Irwin Way Mellum Drive, Landsborough, $80k - Seal residential street Forestry Road, Landsborough, $250k - Seal missing 1.4klm section Link Road Glass House Mountains, $95k - Seal intersection, 650m upgrade and north section Bunney Road, Landsborough, $100k - Funding was brought forward and completed as one project in last year's program.
One Family's Journey
Bruce and Denise Morcombe will speak at our Beerwah Library on Wednesday, August 10 at 10.00am. This wonderful couple and their family are dedicated to finding the answers to their son Daniel's disappearance. Bruce and Denise will share with us their journey from the time Daniel went missing whilst waiting to catch a bus, through the years to today where a Coronial Investigation is underway. Focused on child safety, the Morcombe Foundation raises awareness throughout the nation with a number of events planned each year. Places are limited so I encourage the community to make a booking Beerwah Library 5439 2500. Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.
From Jenny McKay Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Mobile: 0409 450 726 Morcombe Family - Come along and support our Morcombe family as they share their personal journey to promote National Missing Persons Week at Beerwah Library on Wednesday, August 10 at 10.00am, Caloundra Library on August 8 at 10.00am, Nambour Library on Tuesday, August 9 at 10.00am, and Maroochydore Library on Wednesday, August 3 at 10.00am. We recognise how difficult the last 12 months has been for Bruce and Denise and their family as they prepared and participated in the Coronial Inquiry. Today, they unselfishly share their very heart wrenching journey. Wild Dog Management Strategy 2011-16 - I welcome the release by the State Government of the Wild Dog Management Strategy 2011-2016. This is a direct result of a review by the Queensland Wild Dog Offensive Group in conjunction with key stakeholders for which the Sunshine Coast Council and action groups in the region have strongly contributed to. The impacts of wild dogs in our own region have increased significantly in the past years. This strategy will also see increased funding and resources to manage the difficulties in controlling wild dogs in peri-urban areas. The term ‘wild dog’ refers collectively to pure bred dingoes, dingo hybrids and domestic dogs that have escaped or been released. Landsborough – Myla Road - I am pleased to announce that $80,000 has been allocated in the 2011-2012 Council budget for the sealing of the unsealed part of Myla Road. Telecommunication Facility, 20 Tytherleigh Avenue, Landsborough Development Application for Material Change of Use MCU11/0058. Due to an oversight concerning relevant requirements for vegetation overlay on the land, the applicant was required to re-commence the public advertising period from July 11, 2011 to August 22, 2011. Council is identified as an adjoining land holder to the subject land. I recently tabled a petition from concerned residents to Council’s Ordinary Meeting regarding this application, and I share their concerns regarding the unknown impacts of such structures in residential areas. Whilst I acknowledge the importance of the progression of this sort of technology, community health is high on my agenda. The current Town Plans have predominantly been silent on the location of these towers, and the new Town Plan needs to reflect more clearly the suitable locations.

AVOIDING MORTGAGE STRESS If you’re struggling to maintain regular expenses such as insurance and school fees or using your credit cards for everyday expenses such as groceries, then you may be under mortgage stress. ‘Stop. Think,’ advises Teresa. ‘If everyday expenses are getting too much, then it’s time to take your finances in hand. Talk to Smartline – we can help.’ When you are first doing your mortgage sums, plan ahead. For example, think about what might happen if there were a rapid increase www.gcnews.com.au
in mortgage rates, if you lost one income, if you had an unexpected child. Would you have the capacity in your income to cover the extra expense, or do you have a back-up plan? Build a buffer One way to be ready for an unexpected financial emergency is to make sure that you have a buffer built into your loan. By paying off a little extra every month you build up a cushion to make life easier in hard times. Keep to a budget A budget can help you take
control of your money and make sensible decisions on how you spend it. Start by recording every time that you spend money, from big expenses to small. Without this, you won’t get a realistic picture of where your money is going . Taking a critical look at what you spend will also help you to make cutbacks that will enable you to pay extra off your mortgage. The more you pay off now, the easier your mortgage will be to manage in the future and this could save you thousands of dollars in
interest every year. Cut down on credit Credit card interest rates are often very expensive – sometimes over 20 per cent per annum. The best way to use a credit card is to pay off the FULL BALANCE of your credit card each month. That way you benefit from the convenience without paying punishing interest rates. Use pay rises wisely Consider escaping this cycle the next time you get a pay Call Teresa Harrison on rise by putting at least 50% 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 of it towards increasing your www.smartline.com.au/tharrison Smartline CL No. 385325 loan repayments. Students get their hands dirty Glenview State School celebrated National Tree Day on Friday, July 29. Students from nine class groups had half hour sessions planting 150 new trees within the school throughout the day. “When we had our new Hall built there were certain bits of our environment that had been changed and added,” said Principal Neil Harvey. “What we’ve got is a natural gully flowing through the school and we’re looking at reforesting that gully.” Planting started at 9.30am and each session included talks from facilities officer, Ron, who spoke about the importance of the environment and biodiversity. Melissa and Simon Smith from Go Green Rainforest Nursery at Glenview, who donated 100 trees, also gave up their time to help out and educate the students about the selection of trees that were being planted. Principal Harvey said Glenview School is all about sustainability and programs that promote
Jack, Ben and Toby with a tree they planted the sustainability message are in place such as being a healthy eating school and no litter school. The school encourages the recycling of all scraps through their recycle bins and worm farm. “This is a small part of what we call celebrating our sustainable journey,” Principal Harvey said.

Leading macadamia disease researcher visited Glasshouse Mountains Local macadamia growers had the opportunity to hear from leading macadamia disease researcher Dr Femi Akinsanmi, when he travelled to Glasshouse Mountains this week for a series of free industry workshops on disease management. Dr Akinsanmi, a senior research officer at the University of Queensland, led the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) ‘MacGroup’ workshop, at local macadamia grower Lindsay Fullerton’s Property (345 Peachester Road, Beerwah) on Tuesday, August 2 between 11.30am and 3.00pm. At the workshop, which was open to all AMS members, macadamia growers and industry Participants, Dr Akinsanmi discussed the latest research developments and control measures and was joined by leading growers who shared their experiences from what has proved a very challenging season. “The incidence of macadamia disease (Husk Spot and Phytophthora) has increased throughout the industry this season due to the wet, humid and relatively cool conditions,” said AMS Development Officer Robbie Commens. “This wet weather restricted access to the orchard, and as a result, many growers were unable to undertake management practices at ideal times.” Husk spot is the most important disease affecting the Australian macadamia industry, and occurs in
Dr Femi Akinsanmi who delivered a series of free industry workshops on disease management in Glasshouse Mountains nearly all macadamia orchards on the Australian east coast (where the majority of growers are based). It gained international significance this month when it was named Pathogen of the Month by the Australasian Plant Pathology Society. Husk spot costs the Australian macadamia industry more than $8 million in lost production in a good season, and as much as double that in a bad season. Mr Commens said the MacGroup meetings were structured to encourage open discussions, share ideas and challenges, and were a great opportunity for local growers to discuss their disease management issues with Dr Akinsanmi and other growers.

with Jade King The carrot story
QUT Caboolture and Brisbane North Institute of Tafe (BNIT) will join forces next Friday, August 5 as an official site for National Tree Day at their joint Caboolture campus at Tallon Street, Caboolture. Over 100 native trees have been donated by the Moreton Bay Regional Council as a part of a joint effort to combat climate change and create the habitat needed to increase biodiversity of native birds of the region. Campus Administration Manager Christen Hill who has organised the event is looking forward to seeing the turnout, not only from students, but from the local community too. "This year we have registered as an official site with Planet Ark and will be encouraging people from across the community to come on campus and join in,” she said. “It is a great way of making a difference and it will be good to see the staff and students working side by side.” “The benefits of planting a single tree might not seem very much, but when this action is multiplied, the advantage becomes obvious,” she said. It takes three trees to absorb a year's worth of greenhouse gas emissions from one home. If all 115 trees are planted, the event will offset the annual carbon emissions of 38 homes, a wonderful statistic from the day. As well as planting trees, a free sausage sizzle will be run for the volunteers that helped to plant the trees. To register to plant a tree at the QUT and BNIT campus on Friday, August 5, please register at: http://treeday.planetark.org/site/50053 and for further information, please email cabevents@qut. edu.au

Carrots are truly one of the most wonderful vegetables to grow. Not only are they a healthy parcel of vitamin A, they are a little surprise package you get to reveal every time you pull up the plant. I hear many people say that the only surprise they get when they pull up their carrots is the remarkable array of forks, weird bending shapes or a very interesting hairy cover. Then if they do actually come out straight they are bitter and inedible or split down the whole length of the root. I can proudly attest to having all of these wonderful surprises myself once or twice! However, ever since my humble beginnings in the vegetable patch, I have always followed all the advice on how to grow carrots as follows. Soil preparation Finely tilth the soil to a depth of about 30cm and ensure there are no stones or clay clumps throughout. Mix in some aged friable compost and a light sprinkle of blood and bone and potash, but do not add fresh manure or you can cause the carrots to rot and / or fork. Sowing seed Plant the seeds in a shallow rill and cover them sparingly. Many suggest mixing the seed with sand to space them out and see where you’ve sown them, but I personally find just covering the seed with compost or seed raising mix works well. If you want straight carrots, you must sow your seeds directly where the carrots are to grow because transplanting carrots will result in forked, bent or stunted roots.
Super Strawberry Round 4
We hear that growers are not finding many large strawberries so far this season, hence the low level of competition. However the weekly prize of a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel is there for the best entry each round, no matter what the weight. So, growers, bring in any fruit which looks promising. You might be surprised to find yourself the recipient of the winner’s voucher, which you can then redeem at the hotel. That is exactly what happened this week – Oaklands Farms have won Round 4 with an
Watering Initially after planting the seeds it is imperative to water the seedbed often and very lightly for good germination. Once the seeds germinate, consistent thorough watering will result in sweet juicy carrots. However, if you’re not consistent, fluctuations in watering can cause splitting (overwatering) or bitterness (under watering). Thinning Once the seedlings are about 8-10cm high, I thin out (remove) my seedlings to space them out to about 2cm. This is less than the suggested 5cm on most packets, but I choose to harvest the larger ones early when they are just baby carrots, which then gives more space to its neighbour that I leave to grow to full size. Fertilising Apart from the initial soil preparation, carrots should not need any extra fertiliser. In fact, excessive nitrogen can cause you to have all leaf and no root as well as the infamous hairy carrot! Despite trying to follow all these things religiously in my first few years of gardening, my reward when pulling up the carrot at the end was either forked, hairy, bitter or split. Yet, nowadays I have wonderful success with growing carrots … so I have come up with my own theory about growing carrots, and it’s quite simple really…. ‘persistence, persistence and persistence’. Maybe you need to earn the right to grow carrots in the gardening world! Until next month in ‘Get Up and Grow’… entry weighing 60 grams. Congratulations to the picker who saw potential in that strawberry! Round 5 closes at 4.00pm on Friday, August 5. Don’t forget that entries can be presented at Coochin Creek Co-operative at any time during the week – please ask for David or Perri. Thanks to the Co-op and Beerwah Hotel for supporting this year’s Super Strawberry Competition, running in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival (Saturday, August 27, Beerwah Sports Ground).

Small bushy evergreen shrub to 1m. This is a spectacular flowering ornamental with masses of orange trumpetshaped flowers, which are very attractive to honey eater birds. Grow in full sun or part shade, once established it is very easy care. Just a light prune at the end of summer. Beerwah Bulldogs Contributed by Dean Roberts
The Bulldogs hosted the top of the table Caboolture Snakes at Beerwah on Sunday. The A Grade boys still down on troops battled bravely against the well drilled Caboolture team but found them way too hot on the day to go down 48-6. Hopefully we will welcome back a few players as we finish with Bribie Island and Noosa in the last two games of the season. Reserve Grade had to forfeit on Sunday and will need all available players to training this week as we head down to Bribie Island on Saturday Night to take on the Warrigals. Under 18’s scraped home against the Snakes 20 – 16 in an exciting game in the end and get the chance in the next two games to finish off the season well. A Grade Caboolture Snakes – 48 – (Matt Smith 1, Thaos Wallace 2, Scott Maddick 2, Ryan Shepherd 2, Nick Taylor 1, Chris Boss 1 – Tries)(Mitchell Simpson 6 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 6 – (Neil Geritz 1 – Tries)(Lachlan Pill 1 – Goals)

But the real story unfolded as the day progressed with two of the youngest teams competing against each other in the same division. The Rubies and the Garnets were neck and neck all day. At the end of the day both teams were level in first place and were undefeated except for a draw against each other. The final decision was made by countback with the Rubies taking first place and the Garnets second. We were all on the edge of our seats and very proud of the girls’ efforts.

Another great Netball Carnival was attended by the Tibro’s Netball Club on Sunday, July 17 at Pine Rivers. We had nine teams competing in a long but exciting day. Great results were achieved by the Pearls, Gems and Opals all coming Runners Up in their divisions with some very close finishes. The Diamonds, Emeralds and Topaz had a great day, trying their hardest and doing their best. The Diamonds played hard to come away with third place in their division.

Jaden on target for success
Recently Jaden Low, 11, of Glass House Mountains, received a silver medal in Queensland; and a ranking of 5th in Australia, for his division (Cubs born 1998 or younger) at the State Indoor Archery Championships held at Toowoomba. This was a really significant achievement for someone who has only became involved in the sport in the past six months, and his next goal will be setting his sights for the 2012 Youth National Archery Championships being held in Armidale NSW over the first week of January. Jaden’s passion for the sport came after attending a Year 5 Meridan State College school camp. Following the camp he apparently badgered both his parents to look around to see if there was any Archery Clubs on the Sunshine Coast. After making contact the Sunshine Coast Archery Club and organising a few initial coaching lessons with club President Lynette Rankin he hasn’t looked back! In Jaden’s first few lessons he was able to shoot side by side with Ryan Rankin (current Junior and Open Australian Indoor Champion and national record holder for both Open Men’s and Junior Recurve). His younger brother Lachlan, eight, has also taken up the sport with similar ambitions of become a future star in the world of archery. www.gcnews.com.au

Community Notices Peachester Playgroup
Meetings take place Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9.30am - 11.00am during term time. We all feel the kids toys, especially the dolls are getting rather old and tatty so hope for donations from the general community with any preloved, in reasonable condition, dolls and dolls clothes. Rather than rush out and buy new, we thought it best to try and recycle and maybe give people a worthy cause to have a clean out for. Peachester playgroup is located behind the Peachester church and drop offs of any kind would be most welcome during our operating times, as mentioned above.

Stan Griffiths Catholic Church We often use this expression to indicate that someone has done something that is almost unbelievable. Of course it has its origins in the Gospel account of Jesus coming across the waters of the Sea of Galilee to rescue the disciples who were in danger of drowning. To our way of thinking he did something that defies all the laws of nature. Is the story true or something the disciples made up to confirm that Jesus was Son of God? The answer we give depends on our understanding of who and what Jesus was and is. There is a story that goes something like this. There was once a sleepy fishing village whose conservative population had to find a new minister. There were few candidates who were willing to come to such a remote place. Eventually, over the vigorous protests of Jimmy, a senior elder, a woman Pastor was appointed. After a few weeks the Reverend Gayle was

Glasshouse Country Baptist Church invited to go fishing. A very reluctant Jimmy allowed the party to use his boat, with the understanding he lead the party. On the appointed day they set out for the fishing grounds only to find on arrival that they had left all the fishing gear behind. The only solution they concluded was to return to the dock, which was a good way off. The Reverend Gayle said that this wasn't necessary, as she got out of the boat and started to walk over the water to the dock. Jimmy, who refused to be impressed by this unbelievable ability, observed, "see I told you we should never have hired that woman. She can't even swim." Jimmy's attitude is very similar to many who read the Bible. We approach it with our own biases and preconceived ideas rather than with an open mind and heart which will enable God's amazing grace to flow in and work its wonders with us. Only then will we discern who Jesus really is and know what he achieved by his life death and resurrection.

Replacement windows

Just for Laughs
Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn’t paid for them. Hellloooo,.............just because I’m blonde doesn’t mean that I am automatically stupid.
So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It’s been a year I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot. Submitted by Kim Hanson, Landsborough
