Hi Everyone

A

s we are now officially in December, the pages of GCNews are featuring a very strong ‘Festive Season’ presence. This year we are fully embracing all things Christmas and encouraging locals to participate in the many aspects of Christmas that spread joy and cheer, including giving a little bit of help to others who are not so fortunate. If you noticed the ‘cuter than cute’ puppy on the front page getting into the spirit of Christmas we are also encouraging readers with a cute (or even not-so-cute) pet of their own to send us a photo of their animal

looking festive. For each animal that we receive a photo of, GCNews will donate $2.00 to the Sunshine Coast Animal Rescue Service at Sippy Downs. So get out the camera, grab some antlers, tinsel or baubles, pop them on your pet and send the photo, with the name of your pet and your contact details through to Reception at GCNews. If your pet is a little shy and needs you to be holding them to pose for the camera, that’s ok, you or the kids are welcome to appear in the photo (we will however expect both human and animal to be looking festive)! We will print a selection of your barking great photos with lots of meowing bells along the way. Regards,

A very wooly Christmas street art! By Lea Parkes

For years I have loved the idea of yarn bombing, for those of you who aren’t aware of what it is, basically it is like crafty ‘street art’ or ‘graffiti’ that uses colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint. And while I had plenty of enthusiasm for creating something quirky that people could enjoy, my total lack of actual craft capacity has meant that I haven’t been able to make my dream a reality. But a few years ago I met a lovely local lady Lottie Nisbett, and over the time I have known her I realised that she was an almost obsessive knitter who has made all sorts of knitted items for different charities and for those in need. So a while ago I planted the seed with her, sharing with her how popular yarn bombing trees was around the world saying wouldn't it be great to have it done around Glass House Mountains. Late in 2012 Lottie and her friends set up a group called the Sunshine Girls and decided to hold a couple of fundraising events each year to help generate funds for the rural fire service and other local causes. Recently they organised a very successful breakfast at a winery at Woodford to support the ‘Buy a Bale’ (of hay) to assist farmers, which will see a semi-trailer of hay heading to Hughenden. So I thought now is my chance – and I suggested to Lottie that if I bought some wool and made a donation to the ‘Buy a Bale’ charity, could I enlist

tree at our office, at 16 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains. Just so I did feel part of the creative process, Lottie very kindly let me hang up my ‘not particularly well made’ pom poms as part of the display! I hope that anyone that drives or walks past – enjoys the visual spectacle that Lottie has created. I just wanted to say a huge thanks for her creative talent and the amazing amount of knitting involved. Thanks also to Lottie’s husband John and to Brownie for doing the heavy duty work climbing ladders and attaching it 'under the creative direction' of Lottie!

By Lea Parkes

Christmas came early for a number of local community organisations and school P&Cs when Beerwah IGA handed over a combined total of $10,000.00, with each of the nominated Community Chest recipients receiving cheques for $1,000.00 last week.

Along with the school P&Cs at Beerwah State School, Glass House Mountains, Glasshouse Country Christian College, Landsborough and Peachester State School, as well as the Beerwah State High School Chaplaincy. Representatives from each of the groups gratefully accepted the cheques from store manager Belinda Dukes (pictured third from the left) with the ‘Big Cheque’. Each of the group who attended the presentation ceremony appreciated the store’s generosity and not surprisingly had already worked out where the funds would be allocated. Throughout the year funds generated through the purchase of identified community chest items will be shared between the groups. Now the Beerwah IGA has also recently launched their ‘MyIGA’ Card as a customer loyalty rewards program which can be directed towards the Community

Store manager Belinda Dukes said customers can earn loyalty points for shopping with them. Kids in Care gift appeal on again

Christmas News Make a difference with the gift of literacy

Ray White shines a light on giving this festive season

Sunshine Coast Council libraries invite you to join in the annual Books 4 Kids Christmas book drive from November 10 until December 15 so you can brighten a child’s life with the gift of reading. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Salvation Army have once again joined forces to promote literacy and spread the Christmas cheer to less fortunate children around the region. “Over the past 14 years, the Books 4 Kids program has been a great success and is one that is dear to my heart,” Cr McKay said. “It is really easy to be involved. You can simply buy a new children’s book and drop it into your local library branch. You don’t even need to wrap the book as the Salvation Army is taking care of this. “Books will be then distributed to less fortunate children and families by the Salvation Army through their Santa workshop at Maroochydore. “You can imagine children’s faces lighting up when they open their present on Christmas Day. The gift of a book is one that they can enjoy over and over again.” For more details, visit council’s library website or call 5475 8989.

Ray White has partnered with Rotary to deliver an inspiring Christmas campaign for disadvantaged children who may need a little extra joy in their festive season. Ray White’s Jo O’Brien said the gift drive was a simple way to help put a smile on the face of children and families who may need some extra cheer at this time of year.

“All you need to do is wrap up your present and drop it under the tree in your local Ray White office. Tell the Ray White team if the gift is for a boy or girl, nominate an age group and your gift will be delivered by the team at Rotary to a child who will appreciate the lift to their festive season,” Jo said. Ray White Beerwah located at 5/70 Simpson Street has a special giving tree in their front window to collect gifts for children and families who will be doing it tough this festive season.

Glasshouse Country News is again supporting the Kids in Care Christmas Appeal. The Queensland Child Safety Services appeal is to provide Christmas presents for those kids living in foster care. You can help light up the faces of our Queensland kids, and support their families and carers, to make Christmas a reason to celebrate. Last year the Glasshouse Country News office was a depot for gifts and we had an overwhelming response. Gifts are needed for kids ranging in ages from babies to 17-year-olds. Goods must be store-bought new and unwrapped as this will make it easier to match the gift to the child. Used items and food are not appropriate for this appeal. Presents can include gift cards, sporting equipment, board games, clothes and books. Gifts for teenage boys and girls, as well as the little ones, are greatly appreciated. The appeal officially runs until December 5, and apart from dropping them into the GCNews office, you can take them to Mark McArdle (Caloundra) or Andrew Powell’s (Maleny) office or to the Sunshine Coast ABC office at Maroochydore. GCNews will pack all the gifts into our delivery van and drop them into Child Safety Services on December 12.

Christmas t’is the season to be jolly, but is it for everyone? For many Christmas can be a sad, lonely, anxious time and one full of dread. We may remember previous Christmases spent with loved ones who are no longer there, spending time with families who upset or irritate us, or trying to negotiate with ex-partners regarding access to children over the Christmas period. For some it’s juggling commitments and keeping everyone else happy (but yourself), having no family or friends to share Christmas celebrations, being apart geographically from friends, family and loved ones, not being able to afford Christmas presents due to financial pressure / loss of work and even trying to plan how to avoid drinking or eating ‘too much’. Yes, it can be a tough time for many people, not only before Christmas, but during and after Christmas. It is not fun for everyone. Maybe it is time to have a chat with someone who is professional and non judgemental and can provide you with some practical strategies to help you through this ‘jolly’ period. To make an appointment give Elissa a call. For those of you who do enjoy Christmas and who are able to enjoy it with loved ones and without conflict, a very Happy Christmas to you. But please do spare a thought for those who might not be so lucky.

Wormy ginger and exploding pineapples It seems that ginger with worms and exploding pineapples could be some of the problems facing local farmers unless biosecurity measures are tightened on some overseas imports. With the importation of fresh ginger from Fiji recently approved by the Federal Government, farmers concerns that exotic diseases and pests could be brought in, seem to have been proven after the discovery of root knot nematodes in a ginger shipment. Treatment with methyl bromide was supposed to sterilise any possible pest and disease threats. Luckily, the problem detected was not the devastating burrowing nematode strain which the Australian Ginger Industry Association (AGIA) have warned would destroy the domestic ginger market. Consequently, the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has decided to review the import conditions for fresh ginger from Fiji.

State Agriculture Minister John McVeigh has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision. Mr McVeigh said ginger production was centred in Queensland and the review was a sensible move to address a serious biosecurity risk for ginger growers. “Agriculture is a key pillar of Queensland’s economy and our ginger crop is worth close to $16 million a year,” Mr McVeigh said. “We must protect our local industry from pests and diseases found overseas.” Local MP Andrew Powell echoed the Ministers sentiments. “I join with the Minister for Agriculture in welcoming the review of ginger imports,” said Andrew. Our growers had concerns from day one. I've been presenting these concerns to my federal colleagues for a number of years - I thank them for listening.”

DAFF has also allowed the importation of pineapples from Malaysia. Last month, Michelle Landry, Federal Member for Capricornia said in Parliament that according to respected industry leaders … “we are in grave danger or becoming a nation of exploding pineapples.” Ms Landry explained that an internal rot disease found in Malaysian pineapples can cause the build up of gases inside the fruit, resulting in them exploding “like a hand grenade.” “Industry leaders are distressed by the thought that Australian bureaucrats see nothing wrong with putting our industry at such risk,” she said. “There is no known method of dealing with the disease and no known way to eradicate it.”

Be secure this X-mas ring now (But don’t worry kids Santa has a key)

Catalogue of smut excites scientists Queensland scientists have produced Australia’s first online catalogue of smut and rust fungi. Scientists from Biosecurity Queensland have compiled an online catalogue of fungi that cause some of the most serious diseases affecting crops and native plants. Principal Plant Pathologist and project leader Dr Roger Shivas said scientists began working on the catalogue after myrtle rust was first detected in 2010. “We created the catalogue because it’s important to be able to quickly identify and differentiate native Australian rusts and smuts from any new or introduced species that may threaten

agricultural crops and the environment,” Dr Shivas said. “Because Australia is currently free of many unwanted rust and smut fungi, the release of the online catalogue is a major win for biosecurity Australia wide. “The catalogue can be used by anyone and is sophisticated enough to be used as an aid by laboratory diagnosticians and taxonomists.” For more information or to view the catalogue and the research behind its development, visit http://collections.daff.qld.gov.au/web/key/ smutfungi and http://collections.daff.qld.gov.au/ web/key/rustfungi

Martin is a train enthusiast, so we jumped at the chance to join a Franko’s Rail Tour of Vietnam earlier this year, so we could experience the beautiful countryside from the train instead of flying over clouds. We stayed four days in Ho Chi Min City (formerly Saigon) in the historical Continental Saigon Hotel. It was originally built in 1880 just opposite the Opera House where Vietnamese people were demonstrating against China putting oil rigs in Vietnamese territory in the East Sea. The owner of Franko’s Rail Tours (Frank) travelled with us, giving us a wonderful insight into local customs and eating venues. Every meal was included and most eight course lunches and dinners included fresh local produce, seafood and fruit very creatively decorated. Meals were usually accompanied by traditional music on unusual instruments or traditional dancing in colourful costumes. One day we even had frogs fried in butter for lunch! We were blown away by the huge number of motor scooters laden with families, flowers, wardrobes, water containers, timber, or anything that needed to be transported, streaming along the streets. Forget the pedestrian crossings, just walk into the busy traffic very slowly and keep moving so that the vehicles can flow around you! Even so, I did suffer a bruised arm from a wayward motor scooter in Hoi An.

Dear Mr._________________________________________ (Member of Parliament) I would like to let you know that I am NOT in favour of Halls Creek being included in the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA (Identified Growth Area), because:  I do not want to see the inter urban break, the forestry and agricultural land between the Moreton Bay urban border and the urban boundary of the Sunshine Coast, to get any smaller, as it is now a distinct open green space clearly separating urban areas at either end.  I want to remove the added threat to the Pumicestone Passage, a unique and important waterway for many reasons, from more degradation caused by further urban development on its shores. The overall health of the region’s environment and its biodiversity would suffer even more if Halls Creek were developed.  I want to lessen the negative economic impacts which the Halls Creek development and its associated retail precincts would have on the Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, and Landsborough townships.  I want to see the previous wishes over the past 15 years of the community and the Council on Halls Creek, to remove Halls Creek from the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA, respected.  Other ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________ As our local member, please listen to your constituents who are saying “NO to Halls Creek IGA”.

Chris and Frank on a five kilometre trek through rice paddies in SaPa

Chris entering Cu Chi Tunnel

Up at Sa Pa, in the hill country of North Vietnam, we trekked 5km through three villages up hill and down through the tiered rice paddies under our coloured umbrellas, while the locals toiled away in their muddy gumboots and coolie hats, planting rice or ploughing in the mud with their buffalo. I was daunted by the milling crowds at the busy markets, but soon got the hang of bargaining. We both purchased prescription sunglasses for $50.00 per pair, plus some clothing. The impressive elegantly decorated Reunification Palace, which was the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and the site of the end of the Vietnam War during the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates. We were amazed at the intricate Cu Chi Tunnels which were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems and farmers’ traps helped Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces. Not many of us were small enough to fit into the tunnels but I managed to climb down into a tunnel and crawl back out again. After a big day driving from Hoi An to Da Nang, over the Hai Van Pass, a cruise on the Perfume River and a visit to the Thien Mu Pagoda, we relaxed (? not quite the word) for an hour being pedalled through the noisy night city traffic on purple Cyclos. What great fun as our group overtook each other amongst the tooting, swerving traffic until we got to the Garden Restaurant where we changed into traditional Vietnamese Royal clothes to ‘dress up’ for our King’s banquet. We had beautiful weather throughout our whole trip, but a highlight was our overnight experience on a white painted junk, our visit to the enormous, colourful Surprise Caves and a warm swim at Heritage listed Halong Bay. We highly recommend a visit to see the natural beauty of Vietnam before it becomes too westernised.

Yours faithfully, ________________________________ Name

On Tuesday, November 18, over 70 people attended a Multiple Book Launch at the Glass House Community Hall in aid of the Prince Charles Hospital Cardiac Unit. Starting at 10.00am, the event ran until 12.00noon and raised over $1,000. The morning featured storytelling from three local authors; Lee Paterson, Neville Saffron and Kate Wright who all wrote their latest books whilst in rehabilitation after cardiovascular treatment at Prince Charles Hospital. The morning featured presentations from guest speakers, a wonderful morning tea by the ladies at the Beerwah CWA, a tai chi demonstration and door prizes. Jo-Ann Miller, Member for Bundamba and Shadow Minister for health delivered the key note speech and then officially launched the books. Her well received speech focussed on rehabilitation and the various after care services provided by the Department of Health. Michael Hornby, CEO of the Prince Charles hospital foundation also spoke at the

event and highlighted the importance of correctly following a rehabilitation plan. Brenda Davies, president of U3A addressed the crowd and spoke about the personal background of the writers as well as what type of mentoring and assistance U3A provided its writers. Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club The club had a successful AGM and Christmas break-up on November 23. Much was discussed for the forthcoming year of what is needed around the club. Thanks to the Committee for doing a great job in 2014. Our membership this year is 108 which means our Club’s growth was 10%. This is encouraging for the coming year. If we are successful with the GCBF grant, which we are awaiting the results of, our lights would be

greatly improved. At the AGM two members were very much surprised by being awarded Life Membership for their contribution to the club. Both Ron and Jenny Morris have been associated with the club for over 30 years, with playing and actively being involved at Committee level during this time, were well deserved recipients of this award. It was a very emotional presentation to both members. Our Monday night teams played the first semi final on November 24 and we must congratulate both teams for winning. The Mad dogs who won by 10 games, now go straight to the Grand Final. Well done team. The Vipers scraped in by three games and now play the Preliminary final on December 1. Good luck to everyone. Let’s hope that 2015 is another great year for our club. Life Membership recipients Ron and Jenny Morris CRICOS No.00213J © QUT 2014 GEN-14-1918 20351

Masonic Lodge supports Need a Feed

By Sonia Clark Members of the Landsborough Masonic lodge gathered at Marae Gardens Beerburrum last Wednesday to officially present a Portable Shower Unit to assist the work of the Hinterland based Need a Feed charity. Through various fundraising efforts conducted throughout the year, including the popular sausage sizzle run every second Saturday at the Beerwah Recycle Market, the members of the lodge have raised funds to support worthwhile local community projects. The masons raise funds to provide practical assistance to charities in the form of equipment and support items that assist the work of the organisations. Other recipients during the year have included BADYACC and Morris House. Master of the lodge, Bob O’Conor along with Senior Warden Rick Joyce and Director of Ceremonies Alan Holesworth, presented a ceremonial cheque for $2,766.50 and a commemorative plaque to Adrienne Heppel from Need a Feed. “Masonry is all about charity and so we try to help organisations in the local area that require support,” said Bob. The fundraising efforts of the local Masonic lodge have also been boosted by a dollar for dollar scheme initiated by the United Grand Lodge of Queensland. The portable shower unit will provide practical assistance for those in our community that are homeless or less fortunate, it will be available at all times for anyone in need who requires a shower. “We are just ecstatic, over the moon and so grateful – now anyone who needs help can come and have a shower if they need it,” enthused Adrienne about the new portable unit and the support from the Masons. For more information about the charity see www.needafeed.org or their Facebook page / doyouneedafeed.

Caloundra Family History

The Caloundra Family History Research group held its last general meeting for the year on November 20 and the guest speaker was popular author and raconteur, Dr James Lergessner. His talk on ‘Convict Foundations’ gave an outline of why Australia was chosen over other possibilities during the time when Britain was transporting its criminals; one of the main reasons being the inability to send convicts to America after the War of Independence not long after Captain Cook’s visit to Australia in 1770. Kerry McGrath thanked James and presented him with a certificate and a small gift. Places are still available at the seminar on Saturday, December 6, when the group will host ‘An Afternoon with Lady Mary Teviot’.

The seminar commences at 12.30pm, with registration and a cuppa from 12.00noon. There will be three topics covered, each comprising 50 minutes. Attendance at the seminar costs $20.00 and includes afternoon tea. Bookings are essential so RSVP to Roz on 5493 1197 as soon as possible. The venue is the Caloundra District Indoor Bowling Assoc. hall, at the western end of Burke Street, Golden Beach. Contact Roz or Dawn on 5492 2208 if you have enquiries about the activities of the group, who can also be reached by email at caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com. Is your gardening being interrupted by discomfort? After serving Beerwah over the past 5 years, one thing I’ve learned is this region loves gardening! Another thing I’ve learned is that gardening can be extremely stressful on your spine. People often ask “how did my spine get this way? I didn’t do anything to hurt it!” While trauma or accidents are a common cause of spinal subluxation, by far the most common cause is an accumulation of the stresses we put on our spines each day. When that accumulation reaches a level that the body can no longer adapt to, we get a symptom. There are usually warning signs along the way, such as stiffness in the morning or a minor niggle that seems to go away once you get moving. But if these warning signs are ignored, guess what happens? A major breakdown … massive back pain … days off from work … missing out on things you enjoy because it hurts too much … relationship stress because people in pain are quite grumpy.

Beerwah – 5494 0499

Get the picture? Your spine is pretty important! This is why our mission is to provide the best possible chiropractic care to correct spinal subluxations, and also the best possible advice to avoid re-creating these problems in the future, so you can live your best life pain-free, naturally. If gardening or any of your other daily tasks and hobbies aren’t as easy as they used to be, call Dr Braxton at Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499.

Local community groups receive council grants

Sunshine Coast Council have recently approved funding for a number of local projects through their Community Grants Program. The program provides support to viable not-for-profit community organisations for one-off projects, events and activities. Local community groups were able to seek funding for a variety of worthy local projects. A number of Hinterland groups representing a cross section of community interests were successful. Beerwah Grafx U3A group received funding to purchase a new laptop to assist in teaching photo and video editing skills. Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed received funding to develop a community garden, as well as install a rain water storage and reticulation system. Glasshouse Little Athletics Centre received funds to install a stainless food preparation bench for its canteen kitchen and Glasshouse Mountains Touch Football association received financial assistance to upgrade their competition line marking equipment. A number of Maleny organisations were also successful recipients during this round of grants. The Maleny Community Disaster Management Plan sub group sought funds to purchase ‘A frame’ noticeboards for use by ‘Get ready Maleny’ and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre was assisted with costs associated with constructing additional storage space as well as the purchase of lightweight trolleys. Maleny Netball Association sought a contribution to a large scale project that seeks to convert their existing grass courts into hard courts as well as fence installation, and the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club received funding also towards a large scale project – the upgrade of Beersheba Multi Sports. Finally Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association received funds towards improving the drainage at the Mooloolah Multi sports complex fields. The grants are available to community organisations which either operate within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area or are able to demonstrate that the project or program will benefit local area residents. Dates for 2015 Community Grants Program will be advised in mid-December. Check Council website for further details.

Concern over the environment fell but is now on the rise A survey by Ibisworld Business Report released a year ago shows that public concern was at its peak in 1992 with 74.8% of people concerned about our environment and the future for our grand children. However, concern fell away at about 2% a year until 2004 when concern was at its lowest, 57.1%. Public sentiment turned dramatically upwards in 2008, when it reached its zenith at 81.7% of the population really concerned. I can remember selling solar systems to both men and women (all widowers and widows) in their 90’s who wanted to install solar panels to help the environment. They were not concerned at all about the reduction to their power bills. They were genuinely disturbed about the environmental damage we humans (including themselves) had caused to planet earth, mostly inadvertently

through environmental ignorance. They felt the installation of solar panels resulted in less carbon pollution and this was their attempt to make amends. But the Ibisworld report predicts environmental concern will continue to rise. With all the changes this year by the Federal Government, scrapping many of the environmental policies that go back to John Howard’s government, public opinion is rapidly increasing about this issue. When it is claimed “wind turbines are a blight on the landscape” spoiling the aesthetic, I wonder what this same person thinks of a gaping hole in the ground from an open cut coal mine and billions of tonnes of overburden creating artificial mountains. Renewable energy is the way of the future, and renewable politicians ought to be also considered.

“We could not be happier with our system. I have recently purchased an air-conditioner and it is a pleasure to run it for free from my panels” said Tim.

What will it be like to live on the Sunshine Coast in five, 10, or 20 years’ time? That’s a question many of us ponder. The Sunshine Coast is renowned for many things – our lifestyle, our vibrant and distinct communities and our environmental assets. But, Mayor Mark Jamieson says, it’s council’s vision for the region that really sets us apart and residents may not be fully aware of all the game-changing projects in the pipeline. “We are lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth and council is committed to protecting and enhancing our environment, providing great service and building our economy,” Mayor Jamieson says. “Every day we are working with our communities so they can continue to thrive and enjoy a lifestyle that is second to none. “Whether it is maintaining roads, pathways and bridges, supporting community groups, maintaining our parks, bushland and reserves, or operating sport, recreation cultural facilities and libraries, our focus is on serving our community well. “As our region grows and develops, we will also need new services, infrastructure and job opportunities to grow with it, so our residents and visitors can access the services and facilities they need. “This is why council is looking to the future and making important decisions now that will secure our prosperity, lifestyle and environment. “And that’s why we’ve produced ‘Shaping our Future’ so residents can find out about the region-making projects which will make Sunshine Coast an even better place to live and work.” The Shaping Our Future publication outlines some of the major, gamechanging projects that will provide the platform for the region to ensure it reaches its full potential. Valuable volunteers

School News Inspirational Evening of Arts

After its inaugural success in 2013, Glenview State School once again played host to an entertaining and inspiring ‘Evening of Arts’. Students who excel in the arts were celebrated in a two hour concert, across the disciplines of music, art, drama and dance. Students wowed the audience with their composure and talent. There was truly never a dull moment with war poetry recitals to background music (one was even a rap!), solo musicians on the piano, guitar and voice, and two dance items that transfixed the 150 strong audience. The walls were covered with art work from each class in the school and Year 6 and 7 students submitted work into a 'silent auction' that raised over $100.00 for their class. Teachers gave their time, heart and soul to the children at Glenview to give them an opportunity like no other. Elizabeth Drinnan on the piano

Glenview students stay cool

Contributed by Michelle McCormac With temperatures soaring and further hot and humid weather predicted this summer, Glenview School students and staff will stay on task and learning no matter what the weather is like. Many of the classrooms at Glenview State School have had air conditioning for several years, as the school gradually completed the extensive air conditioning projects. The projects have been accomplished with funds from the School, local businesses, Glenview

Glenview Dance Troupe Chelsea Harry, Bronwen Allen and the school’s dance specialist Melanie Osborne worked hard to make it a night to remember. Glenview State School is certainly allowed to boast about their artistic and music endeavours - with just over a third of the students learning instruments. Music Teacher, Chelsea Harry said students can learn the guitar, a variety of orchestral instruments from strings through to percussion, and piano. “Along with the choirs and lunch time dance troupes, it is really a school with a big heart,” Chelsea said. School P&C and the school community. Glenview School Principal Lex Heilbronn expressed his thanks for the support provided by families and businesses particularly Harpers Air in Nambour, for this valuable addition to the school’s learning spaces. “Glenview School is one of the very few schools of any size which is fully air conditioned.” “We believed this project was another way we could help our students achieve amazing things,” he said.

At GCCC, every secondary student receives their own MacBook

Contributed by Kylie Merola We all know time is valuable. Volunteers who contribute some of their valuable time and talents to making a difference within the community deserve to be recognised. With this in mind, Landsborough State School's P&C recently decided to show their appreciation to all the volunteers who have helped at the school on a regular basis throughout this year. Thanks to sponsorship from Beerwah Meats, they were able to present all dedicated volunteers with a $30.00 Beerwah Meats Voucher as a small token of thanks. This will hopefully come in handy for them to use towards purchasing a Christmas ham, turkey or some meat for a summer family barbecue. P&C President, Jo Brooks, said students, staff and parents at Landsborough State School enjoy a warm, caring community that fosters high standards of academic, social and emotional growth. “The efforts of our volunteers are a vital part of that community,” she said. “Whether people have volunteered in classrooms, tuckshop or assisted with fundraising, they have really made a difference in our students' educational experience this year and we really appreciate it.”

Robotics win awards for St Paul’s LEGO is in at St Paul’s Lutheran. Under the leadership of IT teacher Mrs Lauren Stanhope, students won awards at the FIRST Lego League regional competition held at Rothwell recently, by building, programming and competing their LEGO robots. “There were 11 prizes awarded,” said Mrs Stanhope. “And we were so incredibly proud to have won both the Core Values Award, and the Judges Award! “The children had worked incredibly hard, showing commitment to their teams and giving up morning teas and lunchtimes to prepare for the day.” St Paul’s entered four teams into the competition, run by FIRST Australia and Macquarie University for upper-primary and lower-secondary school students. Teams were made up of students from Years 4 to 6.

The multi-part competition was judged in three elements: Robot Games, Project Presentation, and Core Values. “We were fortunate to have Mr Josh Witham, a competitor at Nationals a few years back, help us out throughout the whole process,” said Mrs Stanhope. “He was absolutely amazing and encouraged the children so much. Now that we’ve received these results, the children are even more enthusiastic about being a part of it again next year,” she said. Principal Mr Anton Prinsloo couldn’t have been happier with the outcome of the day. “It was wonderful and so affirming to watch the students in action on the day,” he said. “They need to be commended on the level of creativity and great co-operative skills that they displayed. “We are now looking forward to seeing the

Climbing the mountains

While those of us who live in Glasshouse Country may take them for granted, the Glass House Mountains have always been a focus of interest and speculation. Professor Michael Meadows from Griffith University is an avid mountain climber and scholar who has made a special study of the climbing history of the Glass House Mountains. PHC has invited Michael to be guest speaker at our Christmas lunch and meeting on Sunday, December 7. He will tell the story of the mountains and their place in climbing history, and show his wonderful collection of photographs. Old Queensland newspapers (available through our favourite website ‘Trove’) abound with stories of locals and visitors who have relished the challenges posed by the Glass House peaks. Many of these people and their climbing feats have become legendary. An interesting review of climbing achievements and identities was published in the ‘Sunday Mail’, 10 July 1938, ‘Mountain Climbers of Queensland’ by Clem Lack: ‘What is it that gives mountain climbing its thrill? To most of us who suffer from vertigo even at low heights from the ground, this scaling of steep mountain sides seems a foolhardy game. But your real mountain climber, who scorns the use of ropes or other aids, relying only on finger and toe holds, finds in it the joy of achievement, the thrill of triumph over difficult and dangerous obstacles. Mr A. A. Salmon, one of Queensland's most notable mountain climbers, told me that he climbs for exercise and the mental and physical stimulus it gives him, to say nothing of the view from the top! ... Some remarkable feats of endurance have been achieved by Queensland mountain climbers. One of the most notable in recent years was carried out in August last year when a party of three, comprising Dr F.W. Whitehouse, Jack Tregenza and Lloyd Gamble, succeeded in climbing the entire ten of the Glasshouse peaks in one day. ... Mr Salmon says he gets a great ‘kick’ out of it and would rather cling like a fly to the side of a rock then cross a Queen Street intersection at the peak traffic hour. Mountain climbing, he says, is much safer than dodging motor cars!’ ‘Glass Mountains’, JOL no. 4831 postcard collection The PHC meeting on Sunday, December 7 is at the Peachester Hall from 11.00am. Visitors are welcome. Everyone is invited to share mountain photos and memorabilia for display, and don't forget a contribution for lunch. 20 |

Reinstall the flashing sign

Since the flashing school zone signs were removed from Glass House Mountains State School, it seems that most people are now ignoring the speed limit. I’ve noticed that roughly one in four cars speed through of an afternoon, and roughly nine out of 10 trucks do it too. Given the layout of the road, and the traffic that occurs during school hours, I don’t even think it is appropriate for trucks to be driving past the school. I honestly think that the flashing school zone sign needs to go back up, a permanent speed camera installed, a load limit placed on the road during school hours or a combination of all three. It’s just sheer luck that there hasn’t been an incident happen, but if things continue the way they are I can see it happening. The other thing that is needed is some enforcement on illegal and unsafe parking. Brett Hay Elimbah

What a joke

I have just read Mal Brough’s column in the November 26 edition of GCNews. Isn’t it typical of our member of parliament (who is ex ADF himself) to have the audacity to call on us to support our troops overseas, yet fail miserably to support them in conditions and a pay rise, in line with CPI? We all acknowledge the excellent job our defence forces undertake. The Government is all about saving money. When the next remuneration tribunal brings down its next pay rise for politicians they will cry ‘but it is decided by an independent tribunal’. What a joke. Least we don’t forget. Bernard Heal Glass House Mountains

Wasteful damage

As I made my regular call to the Beerwah Library several days ago I discovered that the water drinking fountain in the covered entry area had been violently wrenched out of place, and I was told by staff there was other damage as well. We are blessed with one of the nicest library facilities on the coast with a beautiful lily pond outlook (and lovely staff as well) and to see such wanton damage is heartbreaking. This costly, stupid effort to attack public facilities comes at a time when the fountain provides ready relief from the hot weather. While this device may not be the ‘fountain of youth’ the wasteful damage seems to reflect a very angry, unthinking youth with little regard for the benefits which are there for everyone to enjoy. Thirsty library-goer Beerwah

Little man cops it again

As a long-time customer of Smiley’s Jewellers at Beerwah we are appalled that the little shop owner once again is being told they have to move to make way for the bigger business people. Tania Smiley of Smiley’s Jewellers has been told she has to shut up shop and move up to the new shops to make way for a new business. Tania has said she cannot afford to move as she doesn’t have the funds to outfit the new premises so she has to close her business. We think this stinks as she didn’t want to go but once again she doesn’t count, or any other little business. The big man wins again. Couldn’t the people who are taking her shop go up to the new shop? She has been a big part of our community for a long time and that should be taken into account. There are a lot of locals who feel the same as we do. Our whole family feels for Tania and we wish we could do something to keep her. Leonie Hall Glass House Mountains

Sincere thanks

Beerwah State School P & F would like to sincerely thank the Beerwah IGA for their generous donation. In these economic times, when families and local businesses are doing it tough we deeply appreciate that Beerwah GIA has reached into its own pocket to make a donation for the children of our school. IGA has always been a great supporter of young people in this community, and we thank them for investing in our future. This donation will be going towards the school’s Year 5 leadership program which will help to develop the skills of team work, co-operation, problem solving, negotiation, reflection and communication. Thanks. Trevor Pringle Secretary, Beerwah State School P & Fs

Definitely time for action

Greg Brown’s story headlined ‘It’s time for action at the Glass House intersection’ in the Glasshouse Country News November 26 hits the nail on the head. Kel McNamara has got it dead right when he says it is time for action. This couldn’t be any closer to my sentiments, and I suspect a fair percentage of the residents of Glass House Mountains. This is a dangerous intersection. Every time there is an incident or accident on the Bruce Highway traffic is diverted along Steve Irwin Way. When this happens it is almost impossible to get through the intersection. A few days ago, while walking the dog, I counted 17, yes 17, truck and trailer units either turning into and out through this intersection in a 15 minute period. Recently Andrew Powell and Scott Emerson visited Glass House Mountains and spent 10 minutes inspecting the intersection, scratched part of their

anatomy, and then disappeared. They later implied if we vote for them at the next election maybe the intersection would be upgraded. Politicians telling us there are not funds to improve the intersection is an insult to the people of Glass House Mountains. Promises and pledges from wishy washy politicians are long passed; it is time to make it happen. It is time for action. Dale West Glass House Mountains

Re: Halls Creek or Beerwah East

The State Government has given the community the opportunity to have our say in this matter. Don’t waste the opportunity. It is not often that public consultation is sought in matters of development proposals. Register a resounding ‘No to Halls Creek’. For anyone seeking further information, check page five of last week’s issue of Glasshouse Country News for a very informative article about the effect development of Halls Creek will have on the Hinterland. Joan Tucker Glass House Mountains Editor’s note: The form is available on page 10 in this week’s edition.

Issues for attention

Councillor Baberowski announces any constituents may discuss any issues with him at Beerwah. I humbly wish to bring the following facts to the good councillor’s attention. 1. Although we pay a Transport Levy, transport is most scarce west of our urban centres, this in turn means many of our hard working retired folk are unable to make the journey. 2. The taxi service has a minimum turnaround time of four hours. 3. In the last 12 months there have been two calves killed, one dog killed, and three other dogs mauled to a Vet fee exceeding $4,000.00, along with the loss of many fowl and birds. 4. Many of the elderly have ceased their daily walks through fear. As the good councillor is unable to be contacted personally, and the one council response team being refused permission to enter a suspect property, it makes it difficult for the constituents to relay their message. As the constituents contribute to the good councillor’s salary, car, and expenses would it be too much to ask for the RSL Courtesy Bus to be used to convey some of the isolated to the meeting? The councillor could then have a photo of him donating to the Drop In centre or such. The Poddydodger Peachester

Competition Policy

On November 24 during a speech in Parliament I sought to re-shape the competition policy debate. My speech in Parliament highlighted just a few of the many success stories from right here on the Sunshine Coast that wouldn’t have occurred without allowing small business players to facilitate new growth opportunities by working together, supporting each other, and collaborating to achieve innovation, job creation and longterm sustainability. With the Harper review into competition policy due to deliver its final report to Government in March, I felt it was timely that we thought about the sort of Australia we want for the next generation. I want to see strong competition and I want small and medium businesses on the Sunshine Coast and across Australia to have every opportunity to succeed and create the opportunities and wealth our regions need to thrive. I am asking small and medium businesses to share their success stories so we can demonstrate just how important small and medium enterprises are to Australia’s future. To share your story: • Comment on my Facebook page – www. facebook.com/malbroughmp • Email me – mal.brough.mp@aph.gov.au • Call my office – 5493 5556 To see my speech visit my YouTube page http:// youtu.be/l7jC8RTGVAw

Operation Bounce Back

My Operation Bounce Back campaign is still going strong and over the last two weeks I have focused on the following employment initiatives: Work for the Dole – involves job seekers doing work for not-for-profit organisations, or with local, state or Australian Government agencies – to be rolled out across the Sunshine Coast from July 1, 2015. Trade Support Loans – Trade Support Loans are loans paid in instalments totalling up to $20,000 over four years. These loans are intended to assist apprentices with everyday costs while they complete their apprenticeship. Get Ready – collect your free USB stick

Congratulations Class of 2014

A few months ago, the State Government launched this year’s ‘Get Ready’ campaign which is aimed at encouraging Queenslanders to have their homes prepared ahead of the storm season. As part of this year’s launch, the Government has teamed up with the RACQ to produce a ‘Get Ready’ USB stick that contains fact sheets to help homeowners prepare their homes in the event of a storm. The USB can also be used to store your personal documents and insurance papers which make it a very useful item to have on hand for a quick evacuation. The USB drives are free for anyone who can use one and can be collected from my office in Maleny or from the Glasshouse Country News office in Glass House Mountains.

It’s that time of year again for our Sunshine Coast Year 12 students to finish school and to celebrate the last 12 years of schooling. I want to congratulate all Year 12 students on graduating. It’s an exciting time in your lives. You may have university acceptance letters to respond to, deciding to work or travel before you study or commence full-time work and the opportunity to commence life after high school. I know ‘Schoolies’ seems like a rite of passage for most Queensland students; however everyone is different and I hope all of you had a great time on the Sunshine Coast, celebrating your last year of schooling. I do urge you all stay safe over the holidays as our community would not be the same without any of you. I want to wish you all good luck with your future endeavours and I hope to cross paths with you in the New Year. Please know my door is always open.

Don’t forget Kids in Care Appeal You might have heard that I launched the Glass House Kids in Care appeal last week. I’m calling on locals who might wish to donate a small gift that can be presented to some of the less fortunate kids in our community. This campaign was really successful in Glass House last year and I am hoping we can do even better in 2014. Gift donations can be made up until Friday, December 5 – you can drop any new and unwrapped gifts into my office at Suite 4/70 Maple Street Maleny or at the office of Glasshouse Country News in Glass House Mountains.

Review of Ginger imports Some of you may have heard that the Federal Government made a decision recently to review import conditions for fresh ginger from Fiji. It gives me great pleasure to join the Queensland Minister for Agriculture in welcoming this announcement. Given ginger production is centred in Queensland, I really feel this review is a sensible move to address a serious biosecurity risk for ginger growers. This review is an opportunity to particularly address the risk of burrowing nematode, which is known to occur in Fijian ginger. Our growers had concerns from day one and I've been presenting these concerns to my federal colleagues for a number of years and I thank them for listening.

Business Alert: Young people deserve a chance too It can sometimes be quite difficult to secure a job or even begin a career in the field you want and I know some students would rather start working than attend university or tafe. Whichever you decide to choose, you can always change your mind. Life is about making choices and learning from them. I would urge businesses to consider apprenticeships / traineeships to ensure young people get a start too. 99.9% of young people are looking for a career and are more than capable to excel in their position. As Member for Caloundra I have had the opportunity to meet some impressive young people who would no doubt go far.

Donate with us for the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal As we are supporting the Salvation Army Caloundra branch this Christmas, we are accepting non-perishable food items and new toys at my office in Caloundra to go towards Christmas Hampers. We would love for everyone to donate items by December 5 and we encourage as much support from the community as possible.

Why GCNews is proud

Treatments may include a change in footwear, digital foot scanned orthotic therapy, stretching out the foot muscles or strengthening the weak surrounding muscles may solve some inflammatory problems. Other treatments include strapping a muscle tear, confirming our diagnosis of a nerve entrapment or stress fractures via x-ray, ultrasound or MRI, through to ingrown nail treatments or the designing of a soft and comfortable arch support. A Healthy Lifestyle We are always told ‘it is important to live a healthy lifestyle’. But what is a ‘healthy lifestyle’? Is it exercise? Is it eating properly? Is it surrounding yourself with people and things you love? The answer is, it’s all of these things. We understand that a healthy lifestyle takes balance, determination and support and we are here to help you all the way. Everyone has to start somewhere, and the first step is walking through the door. Exercise has so many health benefits. Local Music Scene Music Today

Live & Local in November with Dr Micheal Whiticker

Micheal lives at Peachester and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner

Folk Troubadours

What makes a folk concert different? Seeing Victoria’s Mae Trio and Canada’s Andy Brown recently in a concert, brought this to mind. Enjoying the performance of the Mae Trio – exquisite three part female harmonies, seven instruments shared expertly amongst the girls and smooth changeovers certainly impressed me at a technical level. And I definitely appreciated the fine songwriting with lyrics that try to say something meaningful, or more often, tell a story. And the icing on the cake and only found at a live concert, is having the opportunity to hear the stories associated with the songs - not essential to an appreciation of the music by any means, but often a fascinating insight into the creative process and what might spark an imaginative response from an artist. For example Andy Brown responded to the death of a close friend who suffered from a mental illness with a song he called ‘Myth’ in which he presented his friend’s angle that ‘happiness is just a myth’, but in the heartfelt chorus implored the sufferer not to give up because ‘you’re never alone’. The final pleasure at this concert for me was during Andy’s last two songs where he brought the Mae Trio on stage to sing harmonies with him in a wonderful version of a Neil Young song and a number of his own. That to me is one of those special things that often happens at a live performance with quality artists… welcome surprises do take place! And now for the good news. A concert very similar to this is coming to you on Thursday, December 11 at 6.30pm for 7.00pm at Beerwah Community Hall where you will have the opportunity to hear the Mae Trio and Canadian singer songwriter Del Barber plus one other artist. I wasn’t aware of Del’s work but did a quick search on You Tube and was knocked out by the quality of his work. Here is an artist who has travelled much and displays a keen insight into human eccentricities witnessed in the songs found on the four albums he has released. Have a listen to his song 62 Richmond - he is a very special artist. Tickets for this concert are available online at the Festival of Small Halls 2014 Summer Tour or ring 5496 1066. A wide range of meals, deserts and snacks will be available as well, so do come along for a great night out.

Michael teaches music students from his home studio and runs the Glasshouse Muso’s Club. If you would like to find out more contact him on M: 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Largest gathering of artists and musicians in Australia By Sonia Clark It’s that time of year again when the annual Woodford Folk festival enlivens the Sunshine Coast Hinterland with the largest gathering of artists and musicians in Australia. Now in its 29th year, the festival runs from December 27 until late on January 1 and is a magnificent melting pot of music, culture, visual and performance arts, food and entertainment. The festival features international acts along with a multitude of home grown and emerging talent. One local artist performing will be Maleny instrument inventor and musician Linsey Pollak. Having performed at most major festivals around Australia, Linsey is renowned as a highly innovative musician, instrument maker, composer and musical director. With over 30 years’ experience as a musical instrument maker, Linsey makes and plays instruments from everyday found objects such as rubber gloves, chairs, bins and even baseball bats and carrots! At this year’s festival Lindsey will showcase a performance using a dozen new wind instruments including the Norwegian Smoking Pipe – interestingly made from pipe owned by his great-great grandfather. This year the annual six day event features over 400 distinct acts presenting an incredible 1,556 shows and featuring over 2,500 artists, performers and presenters. With over 35 performance venues, the iconic festival explores the rich diversity of artistic and cultural expression, and is jam packed with a six day program featuring music, dance, comedy, cabaret, workshops and heaps more. There is also a complete children’s festival and a number of unique special presentations such as the ‘Fire Event’ closing ceremony (with a cast of over 1,500!) and the nightly lantern parade. Tickets are available both online and at the gate with season, camping and day tickets available. Children under 12 have heavily discounted admission and children under five are free. Tickets available now at woodfordfolkfestival.com Linsey Pollak will perform at Woodford Folk Festival www.gcnews.com.au

Hundred year old man to entertain Humour and satire abound in this Swedish film adapted from the internationally best-selling novel of the ‘One hundred year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared’. The film will screen at the Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street on Saturday, December 6 at 7.15pm (doors open for dinner at 6.00pm). The staff of the nursing home where Allan Karlsson (Swedish comedian Robert Gustafsson) lives are preparing to celebrate his 100th birthday. Allan however has other ideas escaping out his bedroom window, shambling to the closet bus stop, and buying a ticket to nowhere. The plot is clever with Allan creating chaos wherever he goes. Tickets are available at the door for Members of the Maleny Film Society ($8.00) and general public ($13.00). Please note we do not take pre-bookings over the phone. Further details: phone 5429 6951 or check www.malenyfilmsociety.info.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network

Plant of the month

Wild May

Leptospermum polygalifolium The GMAN native plant nursery has always grown a range of local Leptospermum species including Leptospermum polygalifolium. Like most other Leptospermum species this one produces masses of small white flowers in spring / summer and lots of small woody fruit or seed capsules, following flowering. These will soon open, dispersing dustlike seeds after picking and drying. Recently we have noticed an increase in the requests for tubestock of Wild May so asked the reason for large purchases. We have all heard of the therapeutic value of Manuka Honey particularly for wound healing. Now apparently scientific testing has found that a number of Australian flora species produce honey with anti-bacterial properties equal to, or better than Manuka honey. Wild May, a shrub to approximately 3 metres tall, which grows in well drained coastal wallum and Eucalypt forest in South East Queensland and New South Wales, is reputably one of the best. To meet the demand by beekeepers as well as home gardeners, GMAN will have good stocks of Leptospermum in the New Year.

Get up&Grow with Jade King

Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening

Golden Summer Corn It’s looking to be a hot summer ahead! Whilst there are some great summer fruit and vegetables to grow such as cucumber, zucchini and watermelon, sweet corn has to be one of my all time favourites. If you haven’t already planted your corn, or if you are getting set to put in your next crop, I’ve put together all the information required to ensure yours is a super sweet bumper harvest. Soil Preparation Excellent soil preparation is the key requirement for growing a top-quality crop. With its high demand on nutrients, in particular nitrogen, it is ideal to grow it in an area that has just finished growing a legume crop such as peas or bean. Aged manure and compost mixed into the soil prior to planting will also help as well. Planting Corn is best grown from seed directly into the soil. Using the standard rule of planting seeds at a depth twice the size of the seed, plant seeds about 30 centimetres apart, with about 50 centimetres between rows. Because corn is wind pollinated, it needs to be planted in blocks, rather than single rows, to ensure successful pollination. Maintenance Consistent watering is imperative if you want to have a plant that produces 2-3 cobs of super succulent corn per plant. Another maintenance issue often hotly debated is what to do about the tillers, small shoots that come out from the base of the plant. According to research, removal of the tillers does not increase yield or benefit the plant. However, personally, when I used to grow corn on a small scale I removed them believing that the less energy the plant wasted growing these, the more energy that would go to producing corn cobs. Nutrients need to be applied throughout its lifespan to sustain growth. My general rule is to apply manure or Dynamic lifter at a liberal rate when the plant is about knee-high and water with fish emulsion periodically. Harvest Ears of corn should be ready to harvest about three weeks after the silk emergence. I tend to wait until the silks on the ears have died and they stick out from the stalk at an angle of about 30 degrees. Pests One of the most prevalent pests of corn is Corn Earworm, which burrows into the cob, most often through the tassels, and eat the kernels. One of the best organic ways to prevent this is by applying Dipel on the young tassels after they have been pollinated. May next year bring you loads of super sweet corn! It has been a great year in the garden and I am so thankful for this opportunity to write about and share my passion for productive gardening with our local community. Wishing all of the Glasshouse Country News readers a Christmas full of precious blessings and a productive New Year both in the garden and life!

Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others. www.gcnews.com.au

HANDS OFF HALLS CREEK How long has Halls Creek been considered? Caloundra City and Sunshine Coast Council have considered urban develoment at Halls Creek since the early 2000s and have consistently rejected it as unsuitable. Caloundra South Caloundra City Council agreed to the Caloundra South Development provided at Halls Creek. Do we have to have the Halls Creek IGA? The SEQ Regional Plan requires either the Halls Creek or the Beerwah East IGA to be included. and prefers Beerwah East. This The Halls Creek and Beerwah East IGA including Stocklands land holding at Halls Creek and the protected CAMCOS rail corridor.

Why is Halls Creek in the SEQ Regional Plan? Sunshine Coast Council (and a number of community groups) made submissions on the SEQ Regional Plan calling on the State Government NOT to include the Halls Creek IGA. Stockland made a submission calling on the State Government to include the Halls Creek IGA. The State Government ignored Council and the community and included the Halls Creek IGA.

What can you do? • Write to Andrew Powell MP or Mark McArdle MP and let them know you don’t want

Halls Creek. They have said they want to hear from the community, so don’t be shy.

Attend the community meeting on on Thursday 11th December at 7.00pm in the CWA Hall, Simpson Street, Beerwah.

Howzat?

The news in print, TV or radio keeps us up-todate with the exploits of young men skilfully tossing a red or a white cricket ball around so their opponents can try to hit it. My skills are not what they were years ago. I well remember bowling a fast yorker to my good high-school friend David Tulip, and trapping him lbw. It was a school competition and David was in the Banyo High C1 team while I was in the C2. Normally best friends, this day we were competitors. Then later that year we were the last two leaping in the high jump at school one lunchtime. We as humans can find a way to be competitive in sport and yet respect and maintain friendship. Someone has likened the State of Origin football series to a military skirmish between New South Wales and Queensland, where one side is victorious, yet we maintain our dignity and come back next year to do it all over again. Jokingly one of my friends suggests that is how we hold together as a set of states. In similar situations in the world the sporting loss means

war in a real sense. The states here only go to war in a tightly controlled sporting environment. That is how it was with David Tulip. Any competitive intensity was put aside immediately after the event. We even spent other lunch breaks reading and discussing scripture. Rather strange for two senior high school students. Throughout the scriptures we read of young friends like David and Jonathan who had each other’s respect. In the Bible we also read of the sinfulness of sin that created the separation between man and God. We also read of God's remedy in providing His Son Jesus Christ to settle the score. It wasn't a sporting contest. It was the resolution of a long-standing war which began in heaven. I am so glad that the competition is over, the battle won, and the umpire is God Himself. He always chooses anyone willing to be on His team. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

5495 5155 The benefits of getting a home loan pre-approval

the

Getting in touch with a mortgage broker and seeking the right home loan for your property needs is a major part of securing your own slice of property in Australia. And one of the most useful things you should consider getting is a preapproval for your mortgage. What is a home loan preapproval? Seeking a home loan pre-approval effectively means having a commitment of finances from your mortgage provider, without the responsibility of an actual loan. These agreements give you a basic www.gcnews.com.au

80 Beerburrum Road, Caboolture

figure of how much they’re willing to put aside for your property goals, giving you the freedom to start looking for real estate that fits within these parameters. Furthermore, these pre-approvals are free and valid for up to three months - giving you plenty of time to take a close look at the local real estate market and find the right property for your needs. Pre-approvals are especially useful for those looking into buying real estate through auction. This is because vendors are often extremely keen to finalise the

sale and sign the paperwork immediately following the conclusion of the auction, and having these finances ready to go helps to streamline the entire process. When you apply for a pre-approval, your mortgage broker will take note of various pieces of information about you and your financial standing, in order to provide an accurate summary of what you can borrow. Things like your current income, any outstanding expenses and other financial information will be noted

and factored into the equation. If you’re interested in discussing your home loan situation, get in touch with a local mortgage broker today. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Jenny Kelly There were 55 diehards who came out to play a Single Par event on Thursday. The fact that it isn’t the most popular format didn’t deter Val Turner who has really found form to Sharon with winners win the day again Val and Gloria this week and take home the trophies generously donated by a couple of our lady members, Sharon Phillips and Carol Fraser. Val came in with a score of plus 4 to take out Division 1. Runner up was Julie McMahon with a squared card, on the dreaded count back from Jill Downes, also square. One of our octogenarians Gloria White once again showed us that age is no barrier to playing good golf when she came in with a plus 1 to win Division 2. Sue Wood was runner up on minus 2, with second runner up Gail Murphy on minus 3. Nearest to the pins went to Di Smith on 2, Marie Oxlade on 5 and Lea Garner was closest on the 16th. Monica Dangerfield took out Division 1 on the 18th, and Jan Corfield won Division 2. The random birdie hole was safe on number 15, and the ball rundown went to minus 4. Put on your dancing shoes ladies cos it’s Christmas Breakup Party time. The course should have greened up a bit with that nice drop of rain, and we are in for a fun day. Until then, stay safe and good golfing. www.gcnews.com.au

Young local boxers show class

Contributed by Steve Pitt Local junior boxers took on the best in the State over the weekend and have shown their potential in the Queensland State Championships at Acacia Ridge. Two young athletes from Hinterland Boxing Club at Beerwah – Leroy McNamara and Dana Coolwell – displayed their skill in tough bouts. Leroy reached the semi-final in the 63kg class before only just going down in a close split decision to a fancied opponent who ended up taking the gold medal and the Queensland Championship. Dana stepped up a category, entering the 48kg division, and although it was only his eighth bout, he ended up taking out the gold medal in that category. Trainer Steve Pitt said it was a great effort from both young fighters. “Dana’s win was against heavier and more experienced fighters, and the two lads have set themselves up well for a good showing in the National early next year.” Landsborough’s Jake Molloy represented Handful Boxing Club and reached the final in his division. His trainer, world champion Brett ‘Handful’ Smith, said that Jake’s bout was very close and he has gained plenty of experience from his first state competition. “You always train and fight to win but sometimes it doesn't happen, but this will pay dividends in trials for Nationals early next year,” Brett said. “Jake is now raising money to help him attend a high performance camp for juniors who have been identified as possible future national athletes.”

Upon arriving home, a husband was met at the door by his sobbing wife. Tearfully she explained "It's the Pharmacist. He insulted me terribly this morning on the phone." Immediately the husband drove to confront the guy and demand an apology. Before he could say more than a few words, the pharmacist interjected "now, just a minute, please listen to my side of it... This morning the alarm failed to go off, so I was late getting up. I went without breakfast and hurried out to the car, just to realise that I locked the house with both house and car keys inside. I had to break a window to get my keys. Then, driving a little too fast, I got a speeding ticket," he said. "Later, about three blocks from the pharmacy, I had a flat tyre. When I got to the store there was a

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Your lines of communication open up between you and people with whom you are personally involved and family members. The weekend sees a real healing to take place. Love and pleasure abound in large proportions boosted by Mars entering into friendly Aquarius by the weekend. Lots of hugs now! CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 By the end of this week the full Moon is across your physical and psychological well-being. This indicates you need to balance a very hectic daily schedule with enough rest and down time to retain good health. The returning Uranus / Pluto challenge hits your Cardinal sign hard. Avoid being a dominating person. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You are likely to be set afire by the flames of loving Jupiter in Leo in great aspect to Venus, Mercury and the Sun in fun loving Sagittarius. You could paint the town shiny red and gold with your wonderful stars ready for the holiday social scene. With Jupiter in retrograde you are on the verge of reassessing contracts. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The full Moon midweek in Gemini falls across your home / work access putting you in the middle of having to choose which needs to be tendered to. Uranus adds exciting surprises to your rewards benefit package by December 5 and maybe a joyful office party or holiday bonus. Family members require immediate attention.

Week beginning 03/12/14

ARIES March 21 – April 20 Early in week we have the Moon in Aries, then later the full moon by the weekend in Gemini. So you will be the first in line in celebrating the holidays with the wonderful planets of the Sun, Mercury, and Venus in joyful friendly Sagittarius. Venus and Jupiter get together giving you peak travel plans. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 With the emphasis this week being in your eighth sector of joint money concerns, there is emotional intensity covering money and credit. It may be hard to be thrifty with holiday gift buying without a budget. The full Moon in Gemini by the weekend reminds you to avoid all overspending this weekend. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 You have the full Moon this week in your sign, and that offers you the chance to clear the air or heal the past. Be practical this weekend as some deals may have hidden flaws so be careful about spending. You feel a sudden change of heart about an item that you initially could not live without. Use cool logic. CANCER June 22 – July 22 As Jupiter connects excitingly with the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the easy come, easy go, sign of Sagittarius, you probably find yourself pitched to the emotional extreme by the weekend full Moon in Gemini. Keep your plastic credit under lock and key and try and keep within Jupiter’s cash and carry zone.

LEO July 23 – August 22 You are tipped to have an exciting love sector in your chart as there is much thrilling excitement by Uranus offering pleasure to Jupiter in your personal identity zone. The week lights up your personality and popularity brighter than the string of Xmas lights! Mars brings a glow into your relationship. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 With Mars entering Aquarius close to the weekend, and the Gemini full Moon on December 6, all this might snap you out of passive resistance and into emotional fray! There is a challenge to be either home or at work. The full Moon gets you more involved with fitness, and dependent care. Many holiday plans. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 By this weekend the Gemini full Moon brings in lively connections and / or last minute plans with those near and far. With Mars entering Aquarius this brings a cool friendly breeze into your romantic life, rather than hot passion. This week you prefer an intellectual boost, perhaps with a very smart young child. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 There is emphasis in your economical outlook this week with valuable ideas. With the full Moon in Gemini on the weekend don’t forget to give gifts and goodies for loved ones. With Mars entering friendly Aquarius this will fire up your holiday activity and getting your home decorated with overflowing tinsel.

bunch of people waiting for me to open up. I opened and started serving these people, and all the time the darn phone was ringing off the hook." He continued, "Then I had to break a roll of 20 cent pieces against the cash register drawer to make change and they spilled all over the floor. I got down on my hands and knees to pick up the coins; the phone was still ringing. When I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer, which made me stagger back against a showcase with bunch of perfume bottles on it... All of them hit the floor and broke. "Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing non-stop and I finally got to answer it. It was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a rectal thermometer... And, honestly mate, all I did was tell her!"
