And of course, the return to having a ‘Queenslander’ Prime Minister also generated plenty of strong emotion last Wednesday night. And what that means for us at GCNews is that now all our planning for our Q & A style information that we like to present in the lead up to the election is a bit up in the air. Freemasons have a Bash It’s not a secret society – just a society with some secrets. That’s an often heard description of what the Freemasons are. But what’s not a secret is that they’ll be thrashing a poor old 1982 Ford Fairlane to within an inch of its life in the Variety Queensland 2013 XXXX Gold ‘Sun, Saddles and Surf’ Bash car rally in August. The car has been transformed from its previous incarnation as the Blues Brothers sheriff car by the Freemasons from the Warwick district. But when they wanted the decaling done, they turned to the best – Beerwah’s Bruce Allen from ATL Graphix. In a GCNews exclusive, Bruce and members from the Landsborough Freemasons Lodge, revealed the finished car last week. Des Rauber, a member of the Landsborough Lodge said that the ‘travelling billboard’ will help promote the Freemasons organisation across Queensland. “Bruce has done such a fantastic job on the decals – I’m sure it’ll be noticed wherever it goes,” he said.

Call Leisa or Michelle Although the local Landsborough Lodge members won’t be on the 10 day, 3,500km road trip which goes from Blackall to Mission Beach via the Mt Isa rodeo – they will be there in spirit, as they have raised over $500.00 from their regular twice a month Saturday sausage sizzle at the Beerwah Recycle Market. “And as the Freemasons Board of Benevolence matches any of the donations raised by the Lodge dollar for dollar, it means we can contribute $1,000.00 towards the fantastic work that Variety Queensland do for children in need. “So far, the Queensland Freemasons have raised over $30,000 towards the Bash and so with the matching contribution from the Board of Benevolence, the total is $62,000 raised to help sick and disadvantaged Queensland kids,” Des proudly exclaimed. And as the Masonic Lodges along the route will be fundraising as the Bash travels through their areas, that total is expected to continue to grow. Now in its 24th year, the Variety Bash has raised over $17 million for children and children’s organisations across Queensland. The Landsborough Masonic Lodge has supported many local community groups over the years, including Lavally Lodge, BADYACC, Rural Fire brigades and Glasshouse Country Care. Last week, the Sunshine Coast Council passed its much awaited 2013/14 budget – the last budget before the de-amalgamation with Noosa. According to Council, it is a $538 million budget that gets the balance right between cutting costs and investing in the long-term economic future of the region, giving businesses the confidence to invest, seize opportunities and create jobs. Mayor Mark Jamieson said it was always going to be a tough budget due to unprecedented challenges. “This is a budget for the future; we’ve balanced the books despite the financial fallout from de-amalgamation, rising costs and falling revenue. “We know some people are finding it difficult to make ends meet and we have done everything we can to keep rates and waste increases as low as possible,” he said. “In the next financial year, we’ll build on some of the major changes made in the first 12 months of this council including reducing fees, cutting red tape and selling the natural advantages of doing business here. “This budget will keep that momentum going.” Mayor Jamieson flagged that a corporate structural review will be a key component for their budgetary restraint, but will result in local Council staff losing their jobs. “That includes an organisation review to improve council’s efficiency and effectiveness, which will lead to job losses in the organisation,” he said.

The figure that everyone focuses on – the rate rise – has been the topic of considerable conjecture over the last few months. Some commentators had speculated up to a 10% rates rise would be needed to cover the fall in development-related revenues and the costs associated with the Noosa de-amalgamation. However, Mayor Jamieson announced an average rate rise of 5% and a rise in waste charges of 7.4%. “That means an average ratepayer will pay $1.22 extra a week,” said the Mayor. There has been no increase in key levies, such as the Tourism, Environment, Public Transport or Heritage levies. There has also been no change to the early payment discount. Although the waste charges have increased by 7.4% – or an extra $17.00 per year for the 240L wheelie bin and an extra $3.00 for a trip to the tip with a box trailer of rubbish – Council are now giving away mulch. All residents will now be able to collect up to three cubic metres of free mulch when visiting the landfill centres. Highlights of the budget include: • $109 million capital works program • $11.8 million for economic development • $37.5 million for roads and bridges • $13.2 million for libraries and galleries • $29 million for environmental programs • $7.8 million for events and grants

Council budget backs Division 1 and Division 5 communities The recently passed 2013 / 14 Council budget is a significant investment in the future of the Glasshouse Country region. It is an acknowledgement that the area is in desperate need of positive stimulation – both in the look and feel of our communities and in the continued economic development of the region.

By far the largest single budget item delivered to Division 1 is a $4 million allocation for the design and construction of the Beerwah business area, being the culmination of the master planning process, which included the award winning Beerwah Place + process. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the budget is a win for all the townships in the Glasshouse Country region who will benefit from the revitalisation of Beerwah. “Beerwah is a major activity centre and $4 million in one year is going to completely transform the town into a modern country mecca for visitors, shoppers and locals to enjoy,” Cr Baberowski said. “I’m absolutely thrilled that Beerwah Place + streetscaping work will include the undergrounding of power networks – the aesthetic quality this will add to Beerwah is invaluable for the long term look and feel of town. “Being able to deliver on two of my election promises about Beerwah – completing the project within one year and undergrounding the power – has been an important aim for me,” he said. Glenview Road will get the attention it deserves with $800,000 allocated to remove bends and realign sections of the road. “And Roy’s Road has been allocated $2.1 million to widen and realign sections of the road in Beerwah and $384K to replace the existing timber bridge. “In terms of the constraints on this year’s budget I’m particularly pleased that fellow Councillors recognised the importance of these projects.

“Bankfoot House has been allocated $850,000 for design and construction of an exhibition space, interpretive materials and interactive displays that will turn this heritage listed historical gem into a serious visitor destination and mini-museum,” said a delighted Cr Baberowski. For Division 1, the budget will also deliver: • $125,000 – Skippy Park design plan for the next stage of works • $150,000 – detailed design and implementation for the Beerwah Sports Complex • $150,000 – for tiling of the Beerwah Aquatic Centre pool shell Division 5 (which as well as Mooloolah township, encompasses Maleny, Conondale, Montville, Palmwoods and Woombye) received some large allocations for significant projects in areas such as Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, the Maleny Community Precinct and some rural unsealed roads, but Mooloolah hasn’t missed out. A range of projects have been funded in the Mooloolah area, including the renewal of the shelter at the Mooloolah Hall Park and stage two of the implementation of the Mooloolah Valley Dularcha Rail Trail. Cr McKay said that they are getting the fundamentals right by reducing debt and increasing cash to repay our loans and investing in infrastructure for growth. “A sustainable Council means making tough decisions and this budget is about balancing the books,” she said.

Mooloolah gets connected A missing piece of pathway along Mooloolah Connection Road is finally going to become a reality for Mooloolah walkers and cyclists. Work commenced this week to construct a two metre wide concrete pathway along Mooloolah Connection Road. The 260 metre long stretch connects the existing pathway coming west from Mooloolah and the pathway coming east from Ewen Maddock Dam. During construction, property access may be affected for short durations. Council officers will contact residents, where relevant, to discuss timing for access or parking if work is likely to block entrances. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said that this last section of path / bikeway completes the track between the sports field / Ewen Maddock Park and the Mooloolah Township.

“Once completed this will be a good contribution to the local pathway network and an interesting experience for locals and the broader community. “Well done to all who helped make it happen over the years,” said Cr Baberowski. Traffic management measures will be in place during construction – which is envisaged to take two weeks – to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

What a pearler of a perch Local Glass House Mountains man Peter Farrell must have had his ‘lucky undies’ on when he recently went on the annual Vietnam Vet’s TPI Association fishing trip at Tin Can Bay. He bagged a whopping 5.2kg Pearl Perch, which the skipper of the charter fishing boat said was the biggest he’d ever seen.

The eight on board pulled in snapper, parrot fish and mackerel – but nothing came close to Peter’s catch of the day. Peter said that the fish would “feed the multitudes” when he cooked it on the barbeque for his friends and family.

Thanks for helping us help Namuamua Village A few weeks ago we brought you the story of Glass House Mountains locals Kim and Judith who were organising a garage sale to raise funds for the Fijian Village of Namuamua. Kim said that their garage sale was a huge success and in total they raised $949.00. “It was through the generosity and kindness of many locals that we were able to achieve such a great result," Kim said. “The garage sale not only assisted the village but

lots of families who came along who stocked up on well priced winter clothes and bargains and what was left will be donated to St Vincent de Paul. “We are so lucky to live in such a wonderful caring community,” she said. The money raised will be used for postage expenses as they will be sending a few boxes of school supplies and clothes to the village and the rest of the money will assist them in funding for the school. Ecotourism to open up Queensland national parks The Newman Government is set to open up National Parks to even more commercial operations and private business use. National Parks Minister Steve Dickson last week called for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for commercial operations in and around Queensland’s national parks. Mr Dickson said the Government recognised that the state’s greatest competitive advantage is our unique natural environment. “Our vision is to make Queensland a world leader in ecotourism by 2020, as the Newman Government continues to grow our four pillar economy and get Queensland back on track,” Mr Dickson said. Mr Dickson said the Newman Government wanted to hear ideas for innovative, sustainable ecotourism developments in its national parks, protected areas and State lands adjacent to protected areas.

Conservation groups concerned for State’s wild places

The announcement by National Parks Minister Steve Dickson has state and local conservation groups worried about the sustainability of our fragile environments. Des Boyland, Policies and Campaigns Manager for the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland says that the Society continues to be horrified at the treatment of Queensland's environment by the Newman Government and the standards set. “Surely a Minister for National Parks would appreciate that tourism is secondary to the prime purpose of National Parks, which is the protection and conservation of our biodiversity and landscape as well as protection of our cultural heritage. “People visit National Parks for their natural beauty and to commune with nature, not to wonder at monuments to engineering and architectural expertise,” exclaimed Mr Boyland. “Many places within parks are highly significant to Traditional Owners and must be respected. Perhaps this is another area the Newman Government gives scant regard to,” he said. National Parks Association of Queensland (NPAQ) Executive Coordinator, Paul Donatiu agrees, and adds that embracing high-cost, private eco-tourism development for a very niche market, will be at the direct expense of not supporting the existing tourism economies of regional communities. “Tourist operators are being given access to highly valuable public land and the returns to the public purse should be commensurate with that value. “Operators should be paying a considerable premium on what existing operators would need to pay for a similar lease over land adjacent to a National Park. “Eco-resorts or similar facilities in parks is simply not consistent with Queenslander’s understanding of the role and value that National Parks play in our society,” he said. Locally, the Take Action for Pumicestone Passage (TAPP) community group say that their group's efforts to minimise impacts of increased recreational use due to population growth have been dealt a blow by the announcement. TAPP President, Ken Mewburn says that they believe this will be a short term gain if the reasons why people visit the Passage – the beautiful views, the capacity for a quiet fish, the wildlife, the peace and quiet and family time together – are destroyed. “The government must demonstrate how increased access is possible in a way that is safe, equitable and environmentally sustainable,” said Ken. Cliff Schnick from Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) says that the community should put Minister Dickson’s statements under close scrutiny. “Minister Dickson recently said that he had been talking to Chinese consortiums about their strong interest in ecotourism investment. He went on to say, they are very keen to come to Australia, to put ecotourism facilities into place because of what’s happening in China. There’s a lot of pollution, a lot of population. A lot of Chinese are looking to Australia where the skies are clean, the water is very clear, and it’s just a beautiful place to visit, to come and to live.” “To even consider putting our environment and ecosystems at risk in the hands of investors who want to come here because their own backyards are polluted is not acceptable. We should all be vigilant and vocal about the direction this ecotourism is taking,” Cliff said. www.gcnews.com.au

Have your say on recreation plans for dams South east Queenslanders are being urged to have their say as part of the most extensive review of recreation of SEQ dams and catchments ever undertaken. Energy and Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle has released a discussion paper on the future recreation options for Wivenhoe, Somerset and Atkinson dams, the first in a series of 14 discussion papers covering the region’s 26 dams. Mr McArdle said Seqwater had finalised its schedule for public consultation after receiving positive feedback from councils and key stakeholders about the timeframes. “These recreation areas are public spaces and we want to hear from everyone involved – from the visitors to the people who live adjacent to the recreation areas,” Mr McArdle said. “The community will be able to get involved by attending public information sessions and workshops, accessing information on Seqwater’s website and participating in online surveys. “The review will need to balance the diversity of recreation activities against ensuring no adverse impact on water quality or the immediate catchment around those dams,” he said. The review will include the development of recreation site master plans for clusters of dams across the region detailing allowable activities, available facilities, management rules and guidelines. Locally, Seqwater have scheduled the community consultation for Ewen Maddock Dam and Baroon Pocket Dam for this coming September. Keep an eye out for updates in GCNews around that time. Sharing the love of dance

A little over a year ago, GCNews met Rebecca Strutton when she had just opened Black Swan School of Dance and it seems since then Miss Rebecca (as her students know her) has made a big impact on many young locals – managing to ignite the passion for dance in them. Originally Rebecca started the classes at the Landsborough School of Arts. However the school has now found its own facilities in Dyer Road at Landsborough, it’s also grown to 95 students and is able to offer a wider range of classes. Rebecca said much of the school’s success is due to the local communities’ acceptance and support, which she really appreciates. One of the really enjoyable parts of the dance school is being able to give back to the community that has supported her, she said. Rebecca has set up classes called the ‘I heart Dance Performance Team’ which is dedicated to giving back to the community, by being able to perform at local events. The Performance team which currently has 10 members – includes students of all ages and skill levels who work tirelessly on routines to perform at community based events to bring their love of dance into the lives of others. Miss Rebecca and three of the Performance team recently performed at Embracia Aged Care Facility, and while they were nervous before they began, they all really enjoyed the opportunity. “It was a very touching moment to see the age gap close between the residents and our team through the sheer enjoyment of sharing,” Rebecca said. At our meetings we have a guest speaker, this month we have Alex Milne, an Air Traffic Controller from Brisbane. Afterwards, we will partake in a shared lunch. We are an active group of Probians who have monthly outings to varied and interesting places, such as Caboolture Historical Village, the fascinating Maroochy Wetlands, Brisbane Town Hall and in July we have a trip to Government House followed by lunch at the Bronco's Club. ‘Need a Break’ Playgroup

Glasshouse Country Uniting Church will be opening again, after the holidays, on Wednesday, July 10. We are so looking forward to seeing all our mums and children and hope to see many more new faces, too! Our Mother and Baby Nurse, Margie, is hoping to see more newcomers, as well. On Wednesday the Glass House Mountains Women’s Social Group went on a nice leisurely bush walk at Ewen Maddock Dam and enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea in the park. This month the women’s group is shaking things up a little with some live drawing. It looks as though we may even have the assistance of a live male model to help us grow our creativity. 10th Birthday Celebrations

Glasshouse Country View Club On June 20 our club celebrated our 10th anniversary with 76 members and guests. We were entertained by Flashback with Julie Paris from Maleny. They played many songs from the Rock ‘n Roll days. They had the ladies dancing and we had a Conga line weaving through the tables at the Glasshouse Sports Club. The theme for the day was Diamonds, Silver and Blue and Lynn Griffiths won the best dressed lady. We had 22 raffle draws on the day and some of our Red Hat Lady guests won a prize. At our luncheon there were 10 founding members present and our membership is now around 46. One of our founding members, Dulcie Blakey, celebrated a milestone by being presented with her 30 year badge for her involvement with the View Club. Congratulations Dulcie for such an achievement. School News Africa comes to Beerwah

Contributed by Sally Maxwell Students of Beerwah State School were treated to a fun filled musical and cultural performance by African musicians from Ghana recently. The show was an interactive experience with dancing, singing and drumming for everyone, including Principal Eric Greentree and the teachers! The performers from West Africa gave everyone a taste of true African culture and left them with smiles on their faces.

Dying with Dignity Recently, voluntary euthanasia supporters were disappointed when moves to introduce a Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill into New South Wales were defeated in the Upper House of their Parliament. Supporters in Queensland say that at least in New South Wales, the issue is acknowledged by their law-makers, for in this State, there is limited political will to seriously debate the issue. Jim McAllister, a Landsborough local who is involved with the group Dying With Dignity (QLD) explains more about their endeavours. Dying with Dignity (Qld) members believe ‘...people suffering unbearably should have the right to obtain assistance to end their lives peacefully and with dignity’. Within present circumstances in Queensland, achieving this requires changing The Criminal Code (1899) but the current Government has no plans to amend the law. Nevertheless, we believe that should change and we emphasise four concerns: each person providing a clear statement of their wishes; asking to have support from loved-ones when the ‘time to go’ comes, refuting ‘slippery slope’ arguments against legal choice, and assuming ‘the moral high ground’. The post-World War II generation (Baby Boomers) is probably the first in human history for whom life is not necessarily ‘mean, nasty, brutish and short’. We are privileged in being entitled to good health care, varied nutrition and healthy living conditions promoting longer life, and even the possibility of choosing when and where we die. The desire to maintain our dignity is the most common reason for wanting to control our own deaths; people also mention reducing their own pain, but want to also protect loved ones from the pain of loss. Too often in public discussion, the term ‘euthanasia’ comes without the essential, ‘voluntary’ – we want law that compels no one, but that guarantees our right to make the choice to depart our lives when they become intolerable. Competent adults in Queensland can direct our own deaths through an Advance Health Directive – a form (from newsagents, etc. for less than $10.00) in which you can specify that you want to receive or refuse various medical treatments and nominate someone to oversee your wishes should you lose capacity to decide. The completed AHD form should be witnessed by a JP and by your personal doctor. Suicide is legal, but it has to occur alone. There are two things wrong with this: 1. Most of us want to go ‘down to death’ with the support of those who care about us; and mostly, 2. We don’t want to leave a bloody mess – so we’d prefer that our exit be non-violent. When laws in other places have permitted voluntary assisted death (the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland, and in some US states) two things have happened: 1. Suicide statistics have not shot up – people, taking advantage of their right to safe means, die peacefully; but also, 2. Many say that now that they have assurance of assistance when living becomes unbearable, they put their energy into living – they don’t have to ‘go early’ for fear of having the painful part of their death prolonged. Aren’t we as civilised as your average Belgian or Swiss; as capable of framing good compassionate law as they? We have the examples of their law to build on, too. Some Christians (i.e. Christians Supporting Choice for Voluntary Euthanasia) too emphasise the compassion Jesus’ teaching, as against Old Testament fear of punishment for pre-empting ‘God’s allotted span’. For them and us, God doesn’t have a monopoly on ethics. We find an adequate ethical position in Humanism, which proposes that the proper standard for human interaction is our common humanity: treat everyone as you want to be treated. Practically, Dying with Dignity (Qld) aims to lobby politicians to favour our position. Choice of death may seem relevant only to those about to die, but it is of importance to those with debilitating degenerative diseases (at any age) and those in positions of care and/or concern for them. Musicians in our midst

I had the pleasure of talking to local singer/guitarist Tommy Leonard recently about his life in music. Anyone who has heard Tommy play knows that he is a very impressive solo artist, and one who also enjoys playing in ensembles. A month or two ago I heard him in a duo accompanying a songwriter / guitarist and singing harmonies with her. I particularly enjoyed his contribution and noticed how much better the other musician – already a good performer, sounded with Tommy playing with her. He said to me that if working in an ensemble you need to acknowledge that you are a member of a group, and sacrificing your leanings as a solo player is essential if the potential magic in that ensemble is to be uncovered. The synergies that can exist between two or more musicians is powerful and potentially much richer than what each as an individual can hope to muster. Having grown up singing and playing music in his native England, Tommy is an experienced musician. He noted that a professional artist is under a lot of stress and burnout is par for the course. Coping with this mental anguish has only been possible for him because of music’s ability to soothe and heal, allowing him to endure life’s many rigors. He argues that if governments reduced the millions spent on pharmaceuticals and put it into building music making in the community, it would provide much better therapy for us all. In the same breath he mentions another reason for supporting music making at the grass roots level. For him it is there amongst developing musicians, the oxygen is produced that the professional musician needs to breathe. To make that point clearer he noted the importance of community sport for the professional sportsman: without village cricket you can’t build a test team! Regarding community music making he made another point: when searching for a place in which to make and share your music, you need a venue that is a safe place - one in which you as an individual feels respected and valued, and it needs to provide a good process for the making of music. Perhaps that search might be ascribed to life in general we all search for safety, respect and a good process! Have a creative, musical month.

John Tytherleigh, Storekeeper

In any history of the Sunshine Coast, the name Tytherleigh figures prominently both in the development of local business and in community affairs. John Tytherleigh arrived in Landsborough in 1890; and by 1894 he had set up his first store, selling drapery, clothing and footwear from the verandah of the local hall. This was the start of a successful business career, with Tytherleigh Stores eventually operating in Woombye, Maleny and Caloundra, as well as Landsborough. As a storekeeper, John Tytherleigh obviously knew the value of good publicity, as this item from the Nambour Chronicle, December 18, 1903, illustrates:

The meeting starts at 11.00am at Peachester Hall, and includes a shared lunch. There will also be a Bring and Buy stall.

Over recent years the income tax rates have changed: certain rates have been reduced slightly and certain thresholds were increased. The tax rates were unchanged from 2010/11 to 2011/12. However, from July 1 2012 the rates changed, so that taxpayers with a taxable income of $18,200 pay no tax. The low income tax offset has also been changed from July 1 2012. The following table shows a comparison of personal income tax for an adult individual taxpayer, including low income tax offset, but excluding Medicare Levy and surcharge Taxable Income ($)

Do I need receipts to claim deductions for work-related expenses? You can claim up to a total of $300.00 of work-related expenses without the need to have written receipts. Once your claim exceeds $300.00 you must have receipts for the full amount. The expenses you claim must be related to your income and not be for private purposes. The expenses must have been paid for between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. It's risky to fudge the dates! If your employer reimbursed you for your work-related expenses, you can’t claim the expenses in your tax return. You have already got your money back! I donated to several charities last year. Can I claim a tax deduction? To claim a tax deduction for your gift or donation, the organisation you donated to must be registered as a deductible gift recipient. Art Union tickets do not qualify as a tax deduction! You can go to the ATO’s website www.ato.gov.au for more information on what you can claim and can’t claim. Or you can contact us. I have a rental property. What can I claim? The basic answer is that you can claim all expenses incurred in connection with the rental property. Each year the ATO publishes a Guide for Rental Property Owners. This guide details what you can claim and can’t claim. You can download the guide from the ATO’s website, www.ato.gov.au. A major point: If the construction of your rental property commenced after 18 July 1985, you may be able to claim depreciation of the original construction cost of the building. Ask your accountant!

National Parks – to be or not to be, is that the questions?

The Queensland Government, in the name of animal welfare, has amended the national conservation Act 1992 to allow cattle to be agisted in National Parks (NP) that are in or near proclaimed drought declared areas. Employing NP as fodder reserves for graziers adversely affected by drought or fire is a role that, now, can be evoked by governments as they see fit. One thing is sure – drought and fire are regular visitors so allowing cattle grazing had better be a real solution, and not just a piece of window dressing. Otherwise we are going to have severely compromised NP, starving cattle and starving native animals. Drought is a management problem for grazing properties and NP. Prolonged drought raises serious concerns of how to protect land and animals from the consequences of such severe conditions. Both grazing properties and NP in declared areas are faced with the same problems, as drought does not stop at the dividing fence. Ultimately the issue comes down to getting more feed or having fewer feeders. Nobody should be comfortable with the sight of starving cattle or native animals. If starving cattle as a result of severe drought conditions is an animal welfare issue for this government and the RSPCA, why isn’t starving native animals a similar issue under these same conditions? If all the starving native animals in a drought stressed NP were herded into an adjacent drought stressed grazing property there would be a hue and cry. This would be unacceptable to graziers, RSPCA, Government and as I would point out, supporters of NP. Why now the deafening silence from some quarters when it is proposed to truck cattle into drought stressed NP. Are the conservation values of park lands enhanced by grazing cattle? No!, they are degraded and wildlife suffers. Recent correspondence with the government on these issues has not convinced me that temporary grazing in NP is either a workable or a sensible approach to the problem of animal welfare during severe drought, but maybe I have missed something? I too took offence to the claim by LNP members of parliament in regards to privileged householders subsidising those who cannot afford solar. I'd like these gentlemen to understand that my husband and I, like so many people, made a decision to take out a personal loan to put solar on our roof and downsize our car, doing so, not only for the environment but also to help manage cost of living pressures. I am a casual worker with limited work and I can assure these chaps that 22 |

we are not privileged as they assume. In fact, I haven't had a hair cut in months, haven't bought clothes and shoes outside of op shops for the last couple of years. Don't go out to restaurants or movies or special events, concerts or shows. Although we're on solar we are very careful with electricity. We manage and are frugal on a daily basis. We do our lot for the environment also in many ways. We also help out our children in small practical ways to help ease their financial cost of living pressures (they do not have solar and are on town water). These are our choices, other people will have other choices about their household budget but most people I know are doing it tough and I really feel for those on pensions. Yes, we're on tank water but it costs every time the pumps go on and it costs when the pumps need to be repaired or replaced, it costs to get the tanks cleaned and sometimes it costs to buy in water when it 's dry. In fact our tanks need replacing and cleaning now. The rain comes from the sky, it falls freely. The sun comes from the sky, it shines freely. Never allow these freedoms to be taken away from us because that will just be the start. What next, pay for the food you grow in your garden? Pay for the trees you have in your garden, your dams and fences. There is no end to the greed of politicians on all sides and levels of government. Should any government at any level try it on about charging for the privilege of tank water and sunshine let me be the first to revolt. We need to stand up to the fat cats and send a very, very strong message - hands off. Really, if they go on with that caper I think it's high time we took a serious look at the lurks, perks and obscene pensions and privileges that government bureaucrats entitle themselves to. There is one at the Steve Irwin Way end, one before the overpass and then another after the roundabout at Roberts Road. While I feel sorry for your dad getting a fine, signage is not the problem. They would visit his store at lunch time each day seven days a week for lunch. They were chatting to the store manager and said that this would be their last lunch time visit as they had seen all they were aware to see. The store manager said have you been to this, this and this, the answer was no. They then came back for lunch for another five days. This is what good staff can do for any business. Out and About June is all about celebrating show time throughout the Glass House electorate and considering we have four shows that overlap our borders, Maleny, Caboolture, Nambour and Woodford, it is always a busy time for me. I also popped along to many other community events in June including the Maleny Credit Union business catch up, the Bankfoot House AGM and book launch and the Obi Zipline Information night. I have continued hosting informal morning tea catch ups with community groups in Glass House as well this past year and the most recent catch up was held in Palmwoods. These informal, small gatherings are a great way for me to connect with pockets in our community and hear first hand from residents what they want to see for the future of their patch. Native Sarsaparilla

Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening

Hardenbergia violacea

This lovely little vine is still common in our native bushland. It can be confused with a shrub as it often climbs up other species. The stems are wiry and leaves dark green and leathery. However it is the lovely dark purple pea flowers which really bring this plant to our attention. These are produced in a raceme of 20 or more, making them quite conspicuous in the bush. Flowering takes place in spring and is followed by numerous typical pea seed pods, which are sought after by wildlife. The leaves are food for the Common grass blue butterfly larvae. Various sources of information indicate that the leaves of this plant have been boiled by early settlers to make a drink which is probably where the name ‘sarsparilla’ originated. Cultivars of native sarsaparilla are popular garden plants which can grow in compact and bushy forms, and even vary in colour. Local forms of Hardenbergia are available from the GMAN nursery.

Wonderful winter!

Cool crisp mornings and glorious sunshine. I absolutely love winter; it is my favourite time of the year to be out in the garden. July for me usually means bulk plantings of a select few vegetables because it is the tail end for planting many winter vegetables. It also ensures that most of my vegetables are able to be harvested before the beginning of the pest season. This year however, I am still in the process of completing all of my garden beds, which leaves me with limited planting areas. So instead of bulk plantings, I am focusing on completing the building of my garden beds and just sticking to regular sowing of the usual vegetables to keep up our supply. My planting will include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, peas, beetroot, tomatoes, carrots and beans. I’m also contemplating throwing some potatoes in the paddock and seeing how they fair. It will be a gamble, but I just love fresh potatoes. On the maintenance side of things, I am keeping up with the watering every second day despite the cold mornings. Regular watering also ensures solid even growth of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage heads. I’m also liquid feeding my brassicas, tomatoes and silver beet as they develop, to ensure a bumper crop. The additional nutrients in liquid form allows for quicker uptake by the plants which can otherwise be considerably slow with organic manures that have to be broken down, especially in winter. Finally, I will be making sure I have a good thick covering of mulch to protect the plant roots and soil organisms from the cold. All of these things, along with my three kids on school holidays, should keep me well and truly busy. Don’t let the winter chill keep you and your family from getting out and enjoying the garden. Alarm Bells

Today I am going to write about something that affects all of us in varying degrees… and that is Anger. When someone is angry it is often difficult for others to know how to handle it. Some people go very quiet when they are angry and this can make it harder for others to notice, but the trouble is that these people have a tendency to let things build up and then they explode over a tiny little thing – their response seems out of proportion with the issue at hand. This often means that they have been angry for a while and not done anything about it. With other people it is much easier to identify when they are angry because they are aggressive and sometimes abusive. This however can bring pain to those around them – including loved ones who sometimes are subjected to years of heartache. The bible says in Proverbs 15:18 ‘A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel’. Anger in itself is not bad – I often use the analogy with school students of anger being like our body’s ‘Alarm Bell’. When it rings it tells us that there is something wrong. It could be a deep

hurt that has been triggered; it could be a sense of injustice or humiliation. Sometimes people don’t really know why they are angry or when anger will strike next. An appropriate way to handle anger, is first to stop and realise what is happening and try and make some sense of it. Then we need to find a positive way forward – talking to someone who can help is a good start (e.g. work place Issue: go and talk to a trusted supervisor). We all know that anger which turns into abuse of others causes a lot of pain for everyone. The good news is that we can get help and work through the issues. A good counsellor can guide a person through the painful parts of their life that cause anger and help them find some peace. I believe that God wants to help us become a whole person who isn’t controlled by fear and anger and if we pray to God about this stuff he will help us.

Tahlia represents Queensland

Landsborough local Tahlia Harrop was selected, along with her horse Roseamba Romeo (Zam), as a member of the Pony Club Association of Queensland (PCAQ) Sporting Interstate Team to travel to Gloucester in NSW earlier this year. Tahlia, a member of the Mooloolah Pony Club, was part of the Queensland team for the first time, and in the recent competition they took on New South Wales. Tahlia’s mum Helen said travelling to the event was a 12 hour journey with a three and a half hour stop to let the horse out to stretch along the way. “We all arrived safe and well two days prior, to relax and refresh ourselves, and the horse. Having a swim in Gloucester River was beautiful,” Helen said. There were 35 Queensland riders aged from 12 to 26 years and Queensland won the overall competition against New South Wales. Tahlia went extremely well for her first competition as a Queensland Rep. She placed 6th in Bending, 3rd in Bondfield Bounce, 2nd in Running Tee, 13th in Barrels and in other events placed in the top 20, out of 50 riders.
