Hi Everyone... Everyone knows I love my job working in our local community, but it would be fair to say that mine isn’t a media job that generally involves being part of a serious media scrum where I get involved in a bit of ‘argy bargy’ to get a photo. Generally the pushiest I ever have to be is during the arrivals at our local high school graduations when we have to fight off the wave of parents with their iPhones trying to capture every moment for Facebook. However, I got to feel like a serious media person last week when the PM came to town. And when I say town, I mean the town our office is actually located in – yes, little old Glass House Mountains. It was great to see first-hand how pleased farm owners Brendon Hoyle and Jon Carmichael were to be able to chat to the PM and show him around. However, what I really enjoyed was seeing Jon’s teenage son milling around on the sidelines, waiting for the event to get under way and taking a keen interest in how things unfolded. I reckon he might be the only kid in his class next term with a story about how the PM came to visit his farm in the school holidays!

Local News PM visits local strawberry farm

Prime Minister Scott Morrison came to town last Thursday to talk to local strawberry farmers Brendon Hoyle and Jon Carmichael at Ashbern Farms. The PM along with federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace took the opportunity to pick and eat a strawberry straight from the field at Glass House Mountains, before heading to the farms’ packing facility on Bury Road at Beerwah to see how that end of the business worked. Brendon Hoyle from Ashbern Farms said that after the devastating couple of weeks their industry had, he was pleased the Prime Minister had taken the time to come out to talk to them personally. With around 80% of Queensland strawberries grown in our region south from Gympie and into Moreton Shire, Ashbern Farm is right in the heart of strawberry country. Mr Morrison is keen for the community to know that the federal government is supporting strawberry farmers by investing $350,000 in a new program to restore confidence in Australian strawberries and ensure local produce is safe to eat. He said this was real money on the table that would be used to boost markets at home and overseas so growers could sell the strawberries they harvested. The new program is being developed alongside peak group Strawberries Australia and will look at giving consumer’s confidence their strawberries are safe with tamper-proof packaging.

The project will work with export markets to ensure they understand the improved food safety measures. “Our government has already strengthened export requirements with strawberries being x-rayed and shrink wrapped,” Mr Morrison said. “So far, nearly 100 consignments have been sent overseas under the new conditions. “The cowards undermining our strawberry industry now face tougher punishments for their actions with an increase in the maximum penalty from 10 to 15 years for intentionally contaminating food and changes to ensure Commonwealth laws capture the sabotage of Australia’s food supply. “We will do everything we can to help our farmers, but we urge Australians to get our strawberry growers back on their feed by getting their products on their plates,” he said.

Contributed by Kylie Merola The annual Landsborough State School fun run recently took place, with a sea of children wearing white t-shirts and rainbow headbands at the starting line. Students loved the challenge of the obstacle-style course. There were tyres to scramble over, hay bales to hurdle, tunnels, cargo nets, foam and a huge slip and slide. The most popular obstacles were the coloured powder station, the jelly pit, the giant inflatable slide and the mud pit. By the end of the event, the white t-shirts were no longer white!

The event, known as Tough ‘Borough, was organised by the school’s P&C as a fundraising event, and all students were encouraged to take part and seek sponsorship. The P&C executive would like to thank every participant for their support and the local businesses who supplied items for the obstacle course. A special mention goes to Beerwah Discount Tyres, Landsborough Hotel, Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade and the Landsborough Cricket Club. While the final donations are still to come in, the organisers estimate the event will raise about $13,000.

Local event raises $9,000 for drought affected community By Sonia Clark

Beerwah Golf Club hosted a special drought relief tournament on Saturday, September 8, raising a whopping $9,000. More than 200 players came together on the day to support this worthy cause with funds raised through competition registration, generously donated raffle and auction items, a sausage sizzle and more. The event was organised in only three weeks with a great effort by greens director Col Penney, staff members and local community members. Beerwah Golf Club secretary manager Wendy Carey said that it was one of the best Saturday competitions they had ever had, and a truly fantastic fundraiser. She was also very impressed that following the competition the funds were rapidly distributed.

Paul Handley from the winning team

The game was a stableford played in teams of four, with the best two scores on each hole used. Winners on the day were Brendan Griffiths, Paul Handley, Paul Duvergier and John Merritt with a score of 113 points. Runners up were Brad Smith, Ian Wilson, Joe Haistie and Steve Jackson on 100 points, and second runners up were Peter Purvis, Adam Purvis, Alan Perham and Josh Hooper on 98 points. With the assistance of Beerwah Lions Club, the funds have been distributed to 45 graziers in the drought-affected community of Quilpie, with each family receiving a $200 credit applied to their September account at the local supermarket. “It was just a great atmosphere on the day, and following the event members of the Beerwah

President Glen Watkins holding a ‘cheque’ of funds raised for the day and members of the club who participated in the event. Lions Club committee moved quickly to organise the funds in a timely and meaningful way,” Wendy said. “By depositing the funds into a local business, it also provided assistance to the local economy.” Each of the 45 Quilpie families had a $200 credit applied to their September account, and each recipient received a credit advice note stating that the funds had been raised by Beerwah Golf Club at its drought relief tournament. Wendy said that she would like to extend a huge thank you to all who supported the day including staff, members and visitors. The generosity of the local community was overwhelming and included sausage sizzle donations from Barry’s Family Butchers, a cheque from the Beerwah Contract Bridge Club for $500 and donation of $1,000 from long-term club member Joan Fletcher.

Thumbs up to Muscle on the mountain Maleny locals Col Sinclair and Lynda Burgess were special guests of the Governor of Queensland Paul de Jersey at a reception he hosted last Wednesday evening for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. The Governor, who is the foundation’s patron, and his wife Kaye welcomed foundation members along with volunteers from across Queensland who are involved in a range of events to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The Governor acknowledged that while September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, for the many people at the reception who educated and supported the men of Australia this was something they did for the full 12 months of the year. Col and Lynda have proudly been involved in raising money and awareness for prostate cancer in their town of Maleny on the first Sunday of July for the past eight years. The dynamic duo are two of the dedicated locals involved in organising ‘Muscle on the mountain’, which has continued to attract growing interest and success for the past seven years. Muscle on the mountain is a great example of what the Governor described as creating events and opportunities to engage and empower men to take responsibility for their health. Col explained to the Governor that it was actually his wife Ellison’s idea to start fundraising for prostate cancer after she saw the great work being done by the McGraw Foundation for breast cancer. It inspired her to do something focussed on the fellas. Ellison decided to organise a breakfast, paying for

In the end 64 people attended and they each made a donation, with $1,100 raised. Based on the success of the breakfast they decided to create an ongoing event. Colin and two other car-loving locals Peter Bundesen and Michael Svenson got the ball rolling to create a “muscle car show” for Maleny. When Col came up with the name “Muscle on the mountain” Ellison approved and the rest, as they say, is history. Colin said that in the first three years Muscle on the mountain doubled in size with more funds raised each year. The event has raised well over $80,000 in total. If you haven’t been to the event make sure you remember to head to the Maleny Showgrounds for the next one to be held Sunday, July 7 next year.

Bill Ferris and Veteran Car Club (Qld) son of Jack Ferris who was the last resident of Bankfoot House, was a life member of the Veteran Car Club and through his mechanical knowledge brought many of the veteran vehicles back to life. Unfortunately Bill passed away in 2013. His good friend John Day gave a hint of Bill’s engineering skill and his significant contribution to the club in a eulogy. “Bill’s mechanical ability was prodigious. It was as though he could see through metal. He understood what made things work and how to make them work again. In the Veteran Car Club, he was our ‘go to man’ to solve mechanical restoration problems. “Many of our cars are on the road today with Bill’s input to make them run right. And then there are those such as our 1903 Oldsmobile … It was a 100-year-old collection of parts that, without Bill’s magic, I would still be putting together. “He had a simple philosophy that he told me on many occasions. It was this: ‘It’s only a bit of dumb metal John, we can’t let it beat us.’ Bill rarely had to refer to engineering books. He was the book.” For more information on the Bankfoot House 150th anniversary celebration please contact the Friends of Bankfoot House friendsofbankfoot@gmail.com or phone Ron Gillinder on 0407 760 989.

Doorknock to #StopAdani Local supporters of the StopAdani campaign plan to speak with hundreds of Maleny residents as part of a national doorknock campaign this Sunday, October 7, departing from Tesch Park at 1pm. StopAdani Maleny believes most Australians oppose Adani’s proposed coal project, which would be the biggest in Australian history, while both Labor and the Liberal Nationals won’t commit to stopping it. The group will take to the streets to talk with residents in the federal electorate of Fisher to build pressure on local member Andrew Wallace to come out against Adani and support stopping the mine. Preliminary conversations with local people reveal concerns the projected economic and jobs benefits flowing from new coal mining in Queensland that are purported by Adani and government will not be realised. StopAdani Maleny is one of 100 local StopAdani groups around the country that have been speaking with people in their electorates about the mine with plans to ramp up efforts ahead of the federal election due by May 2019.

Marking 150 years since the founding of Bankfoot House, this special event will feature Gubbi Gubbi Dance, live music, whip cracking, animal farm, food stalls, films, Bankfoot House tours and much more!

THIS

After its completion in 1868, early transport along the old Gympie Road was largely animal powered using horses or bullocks. Vehicles powered by petrol engines would not be seen for another 40 years. When the first motor vehicles travelled on the dusty gravel road their low speeds meant that many of the safety features we take for granted today were non-existent. For example, windscreens were considered unnecessary and doors optional. Enthusiasts from the Veteran Car Club of Australia (Queensland), who are dedicated exclusively to the world of pre-1919 motoring, will have a collection of these historic vehicles on display at Bankfoot House on Sunday, October 14 as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations. Residents living along Old Gympie Road between Landsborough and Glass House Mountains will have an opportunity to admire the elegance of these machines as they pass by on their way to Bankfoot House. On a visit to Bankfoot House in 2012, former Governor of Queensland Penelope Wensley had the pleasure of riding in a 1903 Oldsmobile. The car, having no windscreen and an elevated seat above the dashboard, presented the Governor with the challenge of keeping her modesty intact. There is a close connection between the Ferris family and the Veteran Car Club. Bill Ferris,

Community Groups Probus – Where the men cook

Contributed by Norma McCormack The Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains enjoyed a picnic in the park at Glass House Mountains recently, which was a fun day at a great venue. To the delight of all members, the men took over the cooking of the sausages and onions while the rest of us enjoyed nibbles and fruit. Probus is a club for active retirees - and looking at the photo you can see some are “very” active. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month in the Community Hall, Beerwah with a short business session followed by an interesting guest speaker. The fourth Wednesday of the month is reserved for an outing or an activity of interest. We would love to welcome new members. If you are interested in sharing our fun please contact Norma at 5439 0446. Frank and Gordon take over the cooking

CHASM Housing is raising funds to build the first of several small houses that will be made available, at affordable rent, to people at risk of becoming homeless. As a prelude to some more adventurous fundraising events in the next few months, we were delighted to present raffle prize winner Aniko Nemeth with her $100 hamper donated by Maple Street Co-op. CHASM will be taking part in a number of upcoming events to promote its activities and to help raise funds, including the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Open Day on Saturday, October 6 and the Earth Arts Festival at Nambour on October 27. You Said It Re: When can the dogs play?

A council spokesperson has provided the response below to the letter from Patricia Aitken in last week’s GC&M News. Construction on the new Landsborough dog offleash area was extended beyond the initial project timeline as council saw an opportunity to deliver a more comprehensive project and was able to bring forward an additional stage of the project. This additional work included a new culvert crossing, which helps provide better access to the park, and agility equipment, such as ramps, to assist in training and exercising dogs. Installing these features now provides a better outcome for the Landsborough community and completing this construction removed the need for the park to be temporarily closed at a later date. As part of this work, due to the use of an Energex easement with overhead powerlines, council is also required to ensure the equipment complies with Energex earthing standards. This compliance process is standard for infrastructure projects and, as the community’s safety is council’s top priority, needs to be completed before the park can be opened. Council is awaiting confirmation of this compliance. Council aims to open the park as quickly as possible to provide an enjoyable space for the community to exercise dogs of all sizes, and thanks the community for their patience. International submarine cable

You asked readers what they think about the $20 million the Sunshine Coast Council is putting into a new international submarine cable (GC&M News, September 12). Frankly, it's impossible to make an informed comment because there is no information available for people to consider. The only stuff I can see so far is the usual twaddle and unsubstantiated claims we get from the mayor about such projects. The proposal has a déjà vu aspect to it. We've not seen a properly conducted cost-benefit analysis for the much vaunted solar farm, despite plenty of people asking if one exists and, if so, suggesting it be made public. The mayor has said the solar farm is, or will be, profitable yet the perfunctory figures I've seen from the council tell me otherwise. Amongst many other things, we need to see the

cost of capital figures used, how they were arrived at, how future cash flow streams were estimated and justifications for them, the sensitivity analyses conducted using various discount factors, and so on. In summary, I do not believe proper analyses have done, and in lieu of such transparency, the mayor's waffle just serves to arouse my suspicions. Peter Slade Beerwah

Further drought collection

The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range would like to acknowledge the help of the staff at the Maleny Super IGA store for their unexpected support to Lions to extend the recent district appeal assisting Queensland farmers impacted by the ongoing drought. Maleny IGA invited Lions to participate in a local promotion aimed at assisting drought stricken families. It was extremely successful with a further $333.80 being raised over a few short hours. This money has been sent to the Lions Club in Charleville in addition to $6,000 already sent from this district. The Charleville Lions Club has had an ongoing project for some time where they deposit all monies received into vouchers which are redeemable with local businesses. It is extremely gratifying to see a commercial outlet such as Maleny IGA and their staff doing their bit to assist those doing it tough congratulations. Children’s cancers increase

New figures from the USA via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show new cancers in children are now likely to occur in the very youngest age groups. The CDC research also indicates that the surge in new childhood cancers is driven by increased rates of certain cancers - brain, kidney, liver and thyroid cancers. Paediatric brain tumour rates are increasing across Europe as well. There has been a 40% increase in childhood cancers in the UK since the late 1990s, and one media account suggests that “modern life is killing children” Conventional

SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519

cancer organisations offer no explanation for these increased childhood cancer rates. Yet now, cancers are among the top four causes of death for both children and adults. The newest USA cancer statistics for young people (under 20 years old) covering the years 2001–2014, point to steadily increasing rates of cancer. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in younger Australians, accounting for 17.5% of deaths in this age group in 2016. Brain cancer was the cause of two out of every five cancer deaths in those under the age of 10. Many authorities today still ignore the increasingly toxic environment in which we expect children to live and the many known and suspected carcinogens in that environment that may be increasing children’s cancer risks. Emerging research points to two aspects of today's world that warrant real caution are the radio frequency microwave radiation (RF) associated with mobile phones, tower infrastructure and wireless technologies, plus there are herbicides containing glyphosate (active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup) and other toxic chemicals such as atrazine and many organophosphates. An extensive evaluation of glyphosate’s carcinogenic potential by two scientists, Samsel & Seneff (2015), described many mechanisms through which glyphosate can cause tumours, including causing DNA damage, a known precursor to cancer development. Their 40page review also noted the “strong temporal correlations between glyphosate usage on crops and a multitude of cancers that are reaching epidemic proportions”. Since 1974, use of glyphosate-based herbicides has increased approximately 100-fold with Roundup becoming “the most widely used herbicide of all time”. So what do we do? Ban glyphosate ASAP and refuse to buy it for any purpose. Tell your garden supplier this. Richard Giles Conondale

One more cup of coffee for the road Many song writers have noted after they have written (and in most cases recorded) a song, that they don’t care what happens to it from that point on as it is in the public domain and, in a sense, belongs to everyone who listens to it. Bob Dylan is a writer whose canon of songs has been considered and reinterpreted by many performers. Songs that come to mind include ‘All along the watchtower’, which has been performed and recorded by countless artists, one of the most well-known and original being guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Another Dylan classic interpreted by many is ‘One more cup of coffee for the road’. It features the timeless refrain “one more cup of coffee for the road” as the centrepiece of its chorus. In itself the phrase is a throw away, pedestrian line, but in its context here it is convincing, as in the verse which precedes it Dylan has been telling us about this wondrous, mystical yet aloof woman. In the chorus we might imagine Dylan thinking: “I can’t have her, I can’t break through her impenetrable wall, so I might as well have one more cup of coffee for the road”. And he ends the chorus saying: “Before I go to the valley below”, suggesting for me that the “valley” he is returning to is the world of common man. An intriguing aspect of the song for Dylan followers is the melismatic melodic line in the verse, which, given his limited vocal technique, immediately grabs the attention. Listen to his display on the word “like” from the first line of the song: “Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky”. It is not typical of Dylan but given that the inspiration for the song was a gypsy camp he stayed in for a week, it begins to make sense as it is suggestive of gypsy melody. Dylan’s recording of this song, featuring the exquisite fiddle work of Scarlet Riviera and harmony of Emmylou Harris, along with outstanding bass and drum parts, inspired many reinterpretations. Go online to YouTube and start with the following - an extraordinary flamenco version from FAWA, a free jazz rock version from Chris Duarte, a world music rock version with a compelling synth ostinato from Robert Plant, an electric guitar work out in Allman Brothers style from Warren Haynes, and a Frazey Ford version in which the vibrato in her voice is so wide and wavering that you’d be forgiven for thinking that her performance was directly inspired by Dylan’s melismatic phrase on “like”. I encourage you to search out and enjoy the various interpretations of not only this song, but any that takes your fancy. It can lead you on a fascinating journey. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

With a growing body of research linking gut health with conditions such as cancer, obesity and autoimmune diseases, Australia’s national science agency, the CSIRO, has launched a new diet focused on improving gut health. Based on decades of research by the CSIRO, ‘The CSIRO Healthy Gut Diet’ includes a series of meal plans based on wholefoods with higher amounts of fibre, especially resistant starch, for improving gut health. CSIRO director of health and biosecurity Dr Rob Grenfell said maintaining a healthy gut could lead to enormous benefits. “Beyond digesting our food, it is the coal face of the nutrients our body absorbs, regulates hormones used throughout our body, and is a frontline of our immune response system,” he said. CSIRO researcher and co-author of ‘The CSIRO Healthy Gut Diet’, Dr Michael Conlon, said having a healthy gut was not as simple as just increasing fibre intake. “For years we’ve thought all fibre was good for helping to keep our bowel movements regular, but we now know that fibre offers more health benefits than this, many of which support our gut bacteria in a healthy way,” Dr Conlon said. “The recipes and meal plans have been designed with higher amounts of fibre and resistant starch to feed the gut bacteria. This includes a wide variety of whole foods that are as close to their natural state as possible – wholegrain cereals, fruits, vegetables, legumes and a few nuts and seeds.” ‘The CSIRO Healthy Gut Diet’ book is available in stores and online. Dine In Take Out with Lea Parkes

Friday night was curry night

I imagine Brownie and I are like lots of couples by the time you get to Friday night the will to go home and cook up a storm isn’t that strong. So having to write a story about the Exotic Marigold Indian Restaurant in Maleny made for a really good reason to go and try it out for ourselves. We have a slightly different way of approaching a menu when we are working. We like to choose items that will be great for photos (yes, we are like ‘young people’ who Instagram their food). After a long day in the office we didn’t get to the restaurant until after 7.30pm so we were very impressed with the complimentary pappadams while we were deciding on what to order. These are the tasty options we went for and we even managed to squeeze a dessert to share. It was the first time I have ever seen a chocolate samosa served with vanilla ice-cream and it was a perfect end to a lovely dinner.

Moofest wraps up for another year More than 2000 people rocked up to enjoy Moofest 2018 on Saturday, September 15, at the Mooloolah Recreation Reserve. Against a backdrop of perfect spring weather, the family friendly music festival hosted local and visiting talent, delicious food stalls, child friendly activities and more. Event organiser Nat Pettingill said she was thrilled with the turnout and the incredible support of the volunteers, sponsors and local community. “It was fantastic to see a heap of new faces at this year’s event - especially a lot of young families with prams who made good use of the new walking track that surrounded the event space. It was also great to see that a lot of people stayed until the end to enjoy the headline band Bearfoot and the fireworks,” Nat said. With a packed program including a Gubbi Gubbi welcome, live music and displays, local school bands, circus skills workshops, a magic show, live chainsaw wood carving and even a dance flash mob, attendees were able to kick back and enjoy some awesome entertainment all for a gold coin entry donation. Special guest speaker Sam Childers (aka the Machine Gun Preacher) entertained a full tent and the end of night fireworks provided a suitably spectacular end to a glorious event.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

A young girl is raped and murdered in a small town. Seven months later her mother (played brilliantly by Frances McDormand) rents three billboards to make known her frustration with the lack of progress in the police investigation. What ensues keeps you guessing, not only about what will happen next, but about the nature of grief and anger, and the complications of ordinary people’s lives. This is an original and intelligent film with excellent performances from all. Brutal at times, there are also tender and grimly hilarious moments. As one critic states it “traverses a high wire between comedy and tragedy - without a safety net”. This film won numerous awards last year, and you will find yourself thinking about it for some time after. Creating a sense of community through Christmas With Christmas fast approaching, I’d like to encourage our townships to think about how we can do better with the whole look and feel of creating community spirit through festive decorations. I’d love to see each of the Glasshouse Country townships professionally decorated with festive lights and eye-catching street light banners, but I have to say that the only way that that can become sustainable is if there is a wider group of people involved. The major stakeholders are businesses and together with the service groups, a collaborative effort is needed to activate the proposal and help provide the atmosphere. Using Beerwah as an example, in my view a strategy needs to be developed and most likely professionally designed to effectively create a unique festive feel. I believe this would cost upwards of $20,000 and is definitely achievable if there were more volunteers, people and community involved to apply for grants and do the research, design and delivery (also incorporating a storage facility for the various decorations). There is only a portion of public space funds available from council and, as I hope you can understand, council is not responsible to decorate each of our region’s townships effectively. It will be difficult to deliver a big change this year, but I’d like to start the process now with an aim to do much better across the townships in 2019. I’d appreciate hearing from people who’d like to be involved. Please contact my office via email division1@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or phone 5420 8987.

Change afoot for Bankfoot House As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Bankfoot House in 2018, council will be increasing its hands-on role in managing and promoting this significant historical asset for our community. From Friday, October 5 visitors will enjoy free entry to Bankfoot House as well as extended opening hours from 10am-3pm each Friday to Sunday, excluding public holidays. The major Bankfoot House 150th celebratory event will be held on Sunday, October 14 from 10am-3pm. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Bankfoot House or if you are interested in booking a tour for your school group or organisation contact council on 5420 8600 or email culturalheritage@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

State Member for Caloundra Queensland will take a major step towards reducing beverage litter in the environment when the Container Refund Scheme (CRS) is introduced on November 1. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, but unfortunately Queensland still remains one of the most littered states in Australia and beverage containers are the second most commonly found item in our parks, streets and waterways such as Pumicestone Passage. I know the Caloundra and hinterland community will embrace the new refund scheme due to the positive environmental impact it will have as well as the potential financial benefit for local organisations. The CRS provides an incentive for people to collect and return eligible containers for recycling in exchange for a 10 cent refund per container. This opens the door for enormous revenue raising programs for community organisations and charities such as our local Scout troops. Scouts Queensland general manager Gavin Kelly has advised me that the scheme had the potential to be quite a substantial income source and the hinterland could expect to see local Scout groups become involved. Mr Kelly said he expected every Scout group in Queensland will eventually act as a donation point with a wheelie bin or caged trailer dedicated to collecting containers so the refund can then be paid directly to each group. However, Scouts are not the only community group that can benefit from the scheme. As we approach November 1, any charity or community organisation can register as either a mobile dropoff location, where the community can donate their containers, or a virtual donation point so people can choose to have their refund directed to their nominated group. This will significantly help these groups, supplement other fundraising programs they may be running and allow them to focus more on their organisational projects. I know we will come together as a community to ensure that we are all aware of which containers are eligible for the refund, support local community groups and do our part to ensure our local environment remains pristine. To find out more about Scout groups participating in your area, please contact Gavin Kelly by emailing gm@scoutqld.com.au or phone Scouts Queensland on 07 3870 7000. For more information about the scheme, eligible containers or to sign up as a collection point visit: containerexchange.com.au or www.containersforchange.com.au.

Don’t risk running empty A proactive reminder to check your water tanks – fill up before you run out! With the current dry weather and forecasts that we will experience less than average rainfall over the next few months, I would encourage residents who rely on tank water to fill them up before they run dry. Last year some residents were left without water due to delays in getting water carrier deliveries. Rick.Baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

In the Garden Glasshouse Country Orchid Society

Contributed by Jenny Kelly As shown on last week’s GC&M News front page, Glasshouse Country Orchid Society held another successful spring show. There were some truly beautiful orchids on display, including a Chysis aurea, grown by Trevor and Jan Heitman, which won both champion species and grand champion orchid of the show. Also in the winner’s circle was Tracey from Beerwah who took home the first prize in the raffle. Second prize went to Marilyn from Nambour and third to Kristie from Landsborough. Winner of the lucky guess was R Harrison, who came all the way from Brisbane, guessing 136 with the correct number being 140. The club would like to thank all those who came along to enjoy the orchid displays and we hope to see you all again next year. If you need an orchid fix before then, come along to our next meeting. There is a change of date for this meeting, which will be held on Thursday, October 18 from 7.30pm at the RSL Hall at Glass House Mountains. We hope to see you there. Trevor and Jan with their Chysis aurea

Backyard wildlife

with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with the rather poorly named common tree snake. This beautiful tree snake should be known as the “absolutely stunning tree snake” as this one had scales on its back that were like blue jewels, contrasting nicely with the yellow scales of its belly. Colouration of common tree snakes can be highly variable with browns, blues or blacks on the back and yellows, pale blue or grey or even white on the bellies. They are sometimes referred to as yellow bellied black snakes, which is not a good name for their chances of survival when they enter the yard of an ophidiophobe (someone who fears snakes). Previously believed to be non-venomous, research now shows that they are a venomous snake (don’t panic) but their venom or its delivery appears to only affect frogs, their target prey, and is unable to injure humans. They are great to watch, slithering acrobatically in trees and shrubs and should be a welcome guest in your forest, garden or veranda but maybe not in the house. As there are no vegetarian snakes, any snakes you might have in your garden – and be lucky enough to see – have been attracted by the habitat you have provided for their prey (and also for themselves to hunt or to search for the opportunity to engage in romantic associations). Having predators in your garden is a sign that the habitat you have created is complex and diverse enough to support them and their prey, which is a good thing – apart from the fact that some snakes are venomous to us and our pets. Knowledge is a great tool to combat fear and plan what to do (if anything) if you see a snake. A great new book to help you with snakes is ‘Snakes of the Sunshine Coast Region’ by Mike Donovan, available at Forest Heart. Most snake bites to humans are usually a result of trying to move or kill snakes. If needed, it is better to contact the snake wranglers and stay safe.

Vege notes

Eggplant

Now is the time to grow eggplant (or aubergine) as it’s a hot weather lover. Being part of the same family as tomatoes (Solanaceae), the growing conditions they prefer are pretty much the same as previously described for tomatoes, except eggplant don’t like damp feet as it causes them to develop root fungal problems. Make sure the soil is rich in organics, free draining and slightly acidic – check a simple home pH testing kit if you’re not sure and add some sulphur if you need to lower the pH to 5.5-6.5. I tend to grow mine in raised beds or in large pots or a 20 litre polybag. Don’t grow them where you’ve grown tomatoes, capsicums or potatoes in the same bed anytime in the past two years, as you’ll increase the risk of diseases and pests (such as root nematodes). You won’t need to grow a lot of plants - I mean how much eggplant can you eat? I find it easier to just buy a punnet or seedlings. The classic eggplant is the large, tear-drop shaped, dark purple skinned variety generally called something like ‘black beauty’. They’ll be the easiest to find seedlings sold in punnets. There are a wide range of other colour and shape variations to choose from, including yellow, white and green striped and orange (an heirloom Turkish variety). If you look after them, they will grow and produce well for two seasons, so choose the spot where you plant them with that in mind – that’s why a large pot is a good idea, as it can be moved if needs be. Water and fertilise (using a general fertiliser) regularly until they start to fruit. Once they fruit, keep watering regularly but change to a fruit fertiliser, which will have a higher potassium component. Calcium is important as well, or they can suffer similar blossom rot problems that you get with tomatoes. Side dress with a calcium supplement when they start flowering. You may need to stake them as the fruits swell and develop as their weight can break the stems. Some of the main pest problems that eggplants suffer from include aphids, tomato caterpillars (or budworms), fruit fly, leaf-eating ladybirds, spider mites, mealy bugs and root nematodes. Some of these are easy to control with a range of specific pest control products, but some (like root nematodes) are virtually untreatable and can only be managed using crop rotation and other cultivating techniques. You should have fruit large enough to pick about three months after planting the seedlings. The fruits are ready to harvest when they are big, shiny and firm. Leave them too long and the skin colour starts to go yellowy and the flesh becomes slightly spongy. At this point they are past their peak and probably only good for making eggplant dip. There’s nothing like a nice firm eggplant, sliced and barbequed with a dusting of Moroccan spice mix.

Noticeboard Glass House local heroes

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has announced the recipients in the third round of his $250 ‘Local heroes’ grants for the year. The successful applicants included were a group of residents at the Twin Cedars over 50s Lifestyle Village who applied for a grant to put towards a defibrillator. Andrew said thankfully the defibrillator was a preventive measure, not a reactive one. The next step is for some village members to receive training but hopefully they will never need to use it. “There is still one final round of grants up for grabs in my ‘Local heroes’ grants this year. Head over to my website at http://www.andrewpowell.com.au to apply,” Mr Powell said.

From the churches When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry”. (Luke 7:13) “Don’t cry.” These words come very easily to our lips when we see someone in tears. The incident from which the text was taken involved wounded souls and broken hearts. “Don’t cry” seems a trifle inadequate. Jesus and his disciples came up to the village of Nain just as a funeral procession was making its way out of the village gates. It was a sad scene. The dead person was a young man. Somehow, the death of a young person always seems especially tragic. He was the only son of his mother and that intensified the tragedy. She was a widow. That seemed like the last straw. Now she was all alone in the world. She had no husband to support her and her only son was dead. But then came along another only son – the only Son of God.

Jill Schefe Glasshouse Country Lutheran Church “When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her.” Jesus felt the pain of this widow. He saw that she was left totally alone in this world and helpless in her grief. It hit him hard and he felt for her. So Jesus said, “Don’t cry”. But what Jesus said was more than just these words. That’s the point. For when Jesus had said this, he reached out and touched the burial cot. “Young man,” Jesus said to the corpse, “I say to you, get up!” And the dead man arose and began to speak. Jesus returned him to his mother. When Jesus walked into the life of this widow, God came to call. When God walks in on your life, things begin to change. And we could use a change. We are content to muddle along through life under our own power, without repentance, and living in open rebellion against God. In his Holy Word and sacraments, Jesus reaches out to every sinner. We do not feel the touch of his hand, but he reaches out to touch us nevertheless. Jesus says “don’t cry” to broken and sorrowful hearts.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Meg Ferran, Liz Flavelle and Sue Greentree NTPs: 2 - Mavis Brimelow, 5 - Val Turner, 16 Carol Fraser, 18 - second shot, Barb Drury. BRD went to 35 points.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Miles Allen

We recently had visitors from Kilcoy, Woodford and Mapleton bowls clubs for our monthly pairs. Judging by the jokes and banter heard around the green, a great time was had by all. Robyn provided another excellent afternoon tea and Relma was asked to reveal her recipe for pumpkin scones. An unusual outcome of the first round was that 80% of the games were draws. That is a very high figure and the odds of it happening are extremely low. Bill and Noel from Kilcoy won the day with two convincing wins and the second round winners were Mick and Allan from Mapleton. Last week’s twilight bowls saw a devoted group of bowlers being challenged by some novelty ideas for each end. For example, players had to bowl to two

jacks and bowl with the arm not normally used. The trickiest end was trying to land the bowl on the mat. Even though there was one end with three bonus points for getting a toucher, not even Paul was able to rise to the occasion. This week is the start of competition number three, which will finish before Christmas. We already have three teams making a comeback and a big turn-up is anticipated in a bid to get the last name on the trophy before it fills up. Come along at 6pm each Wednesday for a bowl, burger and beer or your choice of drinks. Some of our members also play golf but as one of them said: “One of the advantages bowling has over golf is that you seldom lose a bowl”.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker

Several players from other clubs visited on Friendship Day, held on Thursday, September 20. The day went well with a variety of recognised and some unrecognised forms of the great game being played. Nick Cram and Ken Barker played in the Maryborough Masters tournament on the September 22-23 weekend. Nick won two of his four games while Ken lost all of his. Geoffrey Dickie from Bundaberg won the second division medal while Troy McCallum, also from Bundaberg, won the open section. The lawns were put to good use on Saturday, September 22 with a good training session in the morning.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

We recently had a sprinkle of rain but the lucky people on the coast had lots! Hopefully better luck soon. Thursday, September 20 was a stroke event with 50 players in two divisions. The division one winner was Monica Dangerfield on 68 nett from Fay Barry on 69 nett. Division two winner was Pauline Laurie on 69 nett on a count back from Carol Fraser on 69 nett. All very good scores. NTPs: 2 - Robyn Ryan, 5 - Fay Barry, 16 - Pauline Laurie and 18 – second shot, Lesley Eggleston. Birdie box Helen Lewis. BRD went to 74 nett. Thursday, September 27 we played a stableford with 53 ladies, in two divisions. Division one winner was Meg Ferran on 38 points and the runner up was Karen Kemp on 37 points. The division two winner was Liz Flavelle with a great score of 42 points and the runner up was Sue Greentree on 37 points.

On Sunday, September 23 Val Carbery and Donna Manning teamed up to play a 14 point game against Stuart Craig and Vince Carbery. Stuart did very well to get to the peg but Donna and Val triumphed 14–10. Nominations are pouring in for the club championships. The open and second division categories are well populated, but it would be good to have more in the third and fourth divisions. These games must be played soon. Nominate on the blackboard on the clubhouse door. Lessons for beginners are held on Saturday mornings at 8am on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact the president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Contributed by David Hayes Monday, September 24: Monthly two bowl triples - The final game of the year was played with six rinks of bowlers. Well done to Chloe, Jack and Everret, our three juniors who competed at Pine Rivers in the junior competition last Monday-Wednesday in both singles and pairs. There were some unbelievable juniors I had the privilege to see play. The open singles have closed and been drawn. The next events after the carnival will be the mixed triples and fours, which will be played on a Friday and Saturday evening in November. We are getting a few names for the Sevens starting late next January and running for ten weeks. Remember this competition is mixed with three ladies so far. The men will be considering giving the Great 8 Bowls Challenge a go. It starts in February and runs for six weeks. Another great competition like the Sevens. Unless you state otherwise, please be prepared to play either. Ladies, we need your names down for the hinterland local league for February so we know if we have one or two teams.

Just for Laughs A gas service training supervisor and his young trainee were out checking meters in a suburban neighbourhood. They parked their vehicle at one end of the street and gradually worked their way to the other end. At the last house, the occupier looked out of her kitchen window and watched as the two men checked her gas meter. Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his young co-worker to a race back to the truck to prove that the older one could still

ARIES March 21 - April 20 This week inspect your home for any potential problems. Remember, it is not the time to let your guard down. It is just that problems can simply arise by not being attentive. Someone who knows how to play your sympathies gets their way if you let them. Avoid making life-changing decisions over the next six weeks. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 You are playing with a Leo/Moon energy before the weekend and it calls for your attention on home affairs. Your ruling planet is Venus and it retrogrades backwards over the weekend in your opposite sign of Scorpio. Any astrologer worth his/her salt would say this is a “red flag waving at you”! Possibly a past love surfaces. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 There is no need to hide your light under a bushel, because you are clever and you can use your imagination on any new ideas that come under the spotlight. When Venus turns retrograde over the weekend make sure you stick to a good health plan or diet. It is time to have meetings that get good results for the whole month. CANCER June 24 - July 22 There is a New Moon coming up after this weekend and it indicates that staying close to your home, or attending a local event, suits your mood. The library or book stores close to you are a healthy treat! You may feel motivated to move in that direction rather than waste an afternoon going to the movies. Emotional complications intrude.

outrun the younger. As they came running up to the truck, they realised that the lady from the last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong. Gasping for breath she replied: “When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were I figured I had better run too!” Contributed by WJ Everett Beerwah

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Just be careful in engaging in activities and interactions that look like they could end up being a drain on your time and energy. It is doubtful if any dealings may see your expectations confirmed. This is because future dealings with partnerships are difficult under Venus retrograde. It is more an emphasis on healing past wounds now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The New Moon coming up this weekend plants its seed in your career and business zone to foster positive associations and a pleasing presentation. Each morning, drive forward with the ambition of financial benefits. Mercury moves into watery Scorpio bringing intense tones to your paper work, emails and communications. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The New Moon arriving just after the weekend could cause old wounds and inadequacies to resurface. Regarding relationships, or legal issues, or even perhaps distant people, it is a time for healing and finding the “meaning of life”. Making the best of things instead of being critical is the best way to get maximum enjoyment. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The world axis revolves around you this week, so make those brunch dates and a dreamy connection will be as charming as luscious food. Come evening, you linger in fantasy about a certain someone and you want to share your silent, unbounded space in carefree frolicking! Others support you to arrange a pleasurable meeting.

LEO July 23 – August 22 The planet Venus seems to be stationary in your fourth sector. This is then a time to launch a review and reconnect with old networking ideas. Be careful not to divulge personal information inadvertently through Facebook or Messenger services. There is a story that is floating around that may be unfounded now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Moon is in your analytical, meticulous sign over the weekend. So this accents personal and work matters and even perhaps to schedule a midday lunch to benefit from the support and good favour of your closest companion. The New Moon after the weekend makes balanced resources a priority. Knowledge and experience counts! LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Hold off on major purchases until early December when you will have a better sense of where you stand financially and the true value of things that you want to buy. A good rule to follow when the planet Venus goes retrograde is to double check all relevant factors before setting out with your credit card! Flaws in purchases now. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Be sure to set up some good brunches over the weekend with a charming, mysterious and smart companion. The morning offers the best chance to float personal plans and see it all graciously accepted. Hanging out round home can feel cozy. The New Moon plants its seeds in your private zone to resolve old problems.
