CABOOLTURE
Hi Everyone
T
he front cover this week features the very cute Lachlan Milburn getting ready for this weekend’s Rodeo at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. And after almost a decade since the last rodeo was held at the sports club, I am sure it isn’t just Lachlan who is excited about getting his cowboy gear on. The timing is perfect as it’s Father’s Day eve and it should be a great night out for the whole family, with plenty of action and excitement for both the riders and the audience. The gates open at 5.00pm, event starts at 6.00pm and you can get tickets on the night! Regards,

Grab your friends and come along for a full night of professional competitor entertainment packed with thrills and spills. Held in conjunction with the National Rodeo Association, and forming part of the South East Queensland professional circuit, there will be a number of events throughout the night including riders on bucking broncos and raging bulls. The program will also include a junior steer ride for under 16’s and a poddy ride for competitors under 12 years, as well as an open bull ride, open saddle ride and the crowd pleasing bareback rides. Organisers advise that there is a high quality of stock on show with some of the best voted bucking stock in the state. In previous years, the Sports Club has put on successful rodeos and so the decision was made to bring back the event to the local area. Nowhere else in the Hinterland offers this type of family entertainment and the event also serves as a way to promote local business.

Centre Manager of the Beerwah Marketplace, Judy Dewar, said Tony McDonald was such a deserving winner. “I’m so glad this prize will be going to a family that it will make a real difference to,” she said.

Tony and his wife Irma and their three boys Hayden (7), Josh (4) and Lucas (3) moved to Witta just on 12 months ago and with the continuing treatment that Tony required, life had presented them with some challenges. Tony was originally diagnosed with a brain tumour 14 years ago and was given 12 months to live, so he is definitely a very determined and focused individual who transformed his lifestyle and took on the battle to fight for his future. The couple met in Alice Springs and more recently they ran a health retreat in Northern New South Wales. However when Tony’s brain tumour began growing again in 2012, and he had to undergo surgery by the renowned neurologist Charlie Teo in Sydney, he could no longer work and they had to search for a new place to call home. With three young children, schooling was going to be important and they wanted somewhere that was green with a stream and Witta was their answer. The family have been really happy with their choice, Irma explained, however with the regular trips to Caloundra for therapy, Tony’s 4WD has proven to be a bit of a gas guzzler. So a smaller more economical vehicle had been on their wish list for the future.

Sentimental journey
Calling all Foodies!
Not surprisingly one of those people was Glass House Mountains local Steve Ralph, owner of the Australian Teamsters Hall Of Fame and Spirit of Cobb & C0, located on Old Gympie Road, across from Bankfoot House. The journey had special significance as it was an opportunity for him to take his son Derek (who is almost three years old) on part of the ride. The photograph shows Steve, Derek, driver Don Ross and Don Ross’s son ‘young Don Ross’. Steve’s had a lifelong interest in carriages and has been involved in the industry for the past 30 years, and was very proud a few years ago to discover that his great-great uncles were Cobb & Co drivers. During the bicentenary year of 1988 Steve conducted an historic carriage journey from Melbourne to Longreach (in western Queensland), via the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Brisbane and Charleville, which involved him meeting the Queen who is said to have taken a knowledgeable interest in his horses. Steve is currently working on reconstructing two of the world's largest coach which was made in Australia to transport people to the Ballarat goldfields.

Hundreds of people took a step back in time recently when the 90th Anniversary of Cobb and Co’s last run between Surat and Yuleba, which is a distance of 82 kilometres, was completed over the weekend of August 23 and 24, with stops along the way at the original changing stations.
The coach known as the Leviathan which was drawn by 64 horses and holds 82 passengers, fully loaded is weighs 15 tons, it is nine metres long, four metres wide and five metres high. There was only one ever made and Steve acknowledges that for practical purposes it wasn’t commercially viable in its day, however he believes it will make a fine curiosity and has future potential today. Steve’s business was primarily intended as a working complex for building and repairing carriages, wheelwrighting and blacksmithing in the workshop that measures about 45 metres by 24 metres. However he has continued to grow and expand the tourism elements over the years.

Wild dog control to start Wild dogs are a serious issue across our region for rural and urban residents alike. These Declared Pest Animals can cause significant problems for livestock production, wildlife protection and human health and safety, as well as attacking domestic pets and creating a nuisance around habitations. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Biosecurity Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council are supporting local area coordination groups to undertake proactive wild dog baiting and control programs over the coming breeding season. “Locally, the next wild dog baiting program is planned to run from September 8 and to October 10 for participating properties,” Cr McKay said. These include some of the more rural properties in the Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Bells Creek, Cambroon, Crohamhurst, Curramore, Elaman Creek, Landsborough, Maleny, Peachester, Reesville, Witta and Wootha areas. “The baiting program is offered to eligible local area coordination groups at least twice a year, with each program lasting for around four weeks.” Cr McKay said there were further methods landowners should take to reduce the impact of wild dogs and Council officers were available to assist with education and action. “As part of their responsibility, property owners should also ensure pet dogs are fenced and under control at all times (and not roaming) and learn and understand how to keep livestock safe,” she said.
“Council officers are also available to arrange site assessments and to train residents in proactive and reactive trapping. “In cases where livestock or pets have been harmed, Council officers will at times install motion activated cameras on the properties to determine if the dogs that caused the damage are domestic or wild dogs. Different capture techniques and strategies are employed dependant on this determination.” The control program by small groups of landholders across rural areas benefits the region as a whole by controlling wild dogs at a landscape level, helping to protect adjacent ‘periurban’ communities from wild dog incidences and attacks. Residents are encouraged to report wild dog sightings, incidents or requests by visiting Council’s website or calling 5475 7272. Council will then investigate and action as appropriate.

Halls Creek or Beerwah East …
Locals have their say As part of the process of garnering our views around the Beerwah East versus Halls Creek development proposals, local State Member Mark McArdle, MP has been organising a ‘listening post’ information booth at the Beerwah Library. At the most recent session, a steady stream of residents looked at maps, information handouts and filled out a survey form, giving direct feedback to Mark on whether we – as a community – want the State Government to press ahead with one, or the other, or neither of the large-scale urban development options. According to Mark McArdle, locals haven’t been backward in having their say. “Three of the 12 information booths have been held so far, and we have had a good response with people collecting the detailed handouts and in particular the survey form,” said Mark. “What we hope is that people come, collect the information and take it home and if they have any questions or concerns I encourage them to please give me a call. “This has always been about giving information to the public and encouraging them to provide direct feedback to the State Government, he said.” GCNews spoke with some locals at the last information booth session about their thoughts.
We definitely don’t want Halls Creek. We would rather see other areas of Caloundra become more high density to protect the Pumicestone Passage. We would encourage locals to come along to the future information sessions to get a broader understanding of the issues. Pat and Keith, Glass House Mountains I’m probably more confused than ever and have a few unanswered questions. I’ve asked for some more information and so I’ll wait until I’ve had a look through that before making a submission either way. Heather, Beerwah
It all seems very convoluted. I do appreciate Mark McArdle taking the effort to make information available. It’s important for people to have access to pertinent and truthful details about both proposed development areas, but I’m not sure how people are going to get across it all. Pamela, Landsborough In the past, development seems to have been associated with the coast and with waterways. Maybe we should be looking to keeping future development to where the infrastructure and services already exist. It would make sense to gather the developments within and around the existing hinterland townships. Kath, Landsborough If you’d like to have your say, the information booth with be set up at the Beerwah Library from 10.00am until 12.00noon on Thursday, September 4, 11, 18 and 25.

It seems that another young boxer – Jake Molloy from Landsborough – has also done the region proud by taking out the 44kg class. Winners are grinners
Community News These pigs did fly – around the track Contributed by Kylie Merola The Landsborough Hotel Pig Races sure brought home the bacon on Sunday, August 24, with the event raising more than $4,000.00 for local charities. A large crowd descended on the hotel to watch the novelty event, where little piglets wearing sequined tops took centre stage in a five-race program. The pigs were auctioned off to the highest bidder before each race, and the ‘owner’ of the winning pig in each race was awarded prize money. Race music signalled the imminent start of each race and, right on cue, the pigs ran to the start line to get the best spot. As each race began, the little pigs dashed through their course. The first pig to sip from the bucket of milk at the end of the course was declared the winner. As the day went on, the bidding became fiercer and more money was raised for charity. A petting zoo was set up for the youngsters, making the event a great family day out. This is the second year running that the Landsborough Hotel has hosted the Charity Pig Races. Hotel Publican, Terry Morrow, said, "it's a wonderful feeling being able to give something
Serious competition at the Landsborough Hotel's Charity Pig Races

Congratulations to Kym Duguid who received two first prizes, one for her cushion and the other for a children’s outfit that also received a prize for ‘Best Exhibit in Smocking’. Heather Davidson and Ruth Wright were also awarded second prizes for their items. After many hours of work these women feel rewarded for their efforts. Solar with Accord Electrical – locals you can trust Clean energy is the way of the future and there are now over one million homes using PV solar panels in Australia. Going solar is one of the most effective ways for you to slash your energy bill and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. But is it an affordable option for you and how do you find a trusted, accredited supplier? You don’t have to go far to find the answers. Accord Electrical are a well-established local family owned and operated business that has been providing a great service to the Sunshine Coast for 24 years. They supply only high quality PV solar systems from the world's top manufacturers and operate throughout the greater Sunshine Coast region. Customers constantly provide positive feedback about the attitudes and friendliness of the Accord Electrical staff and the high quality and speed of their work. Indeed, the success of their business is based on referrals from happy customers. Solar power is a great investment, and with
systems cheaper than ever before, and electricity prices continuing to skyrocket, it makes sense to go solar right now. Government rebates are still available and payback time on your system is usually around three years – even less for some people. Give the Accord Electrical team details of your current energy usage and they can give you an obligation free assessment and compare your personal payback times on a range of quality systems. They also offer interest free payment plans. All installations are warranted by Accord Electrical for 10 years and are installed by Clean Energy Council accredited electricians. Accord Electrical are not just solar installers, they are also accredited Master Electricians and have, collectively, well over 200 years experience in all electrical repairs and installations too, so they really know their stuff. Enjoying the company
In August the Women’s Social Group, that meets twice a month at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, enjoyed a presentation by baby boomer and author Jim Lergessner. Group co-ordinator Colleen said it was a nice afternoon with lots of laughs and fond memories of Cloudland and Brisbane. The group would like other ladies who would enjoy meeting up socially to come along to their next gathering which will be a getting to know each other barbecue in the United Park next to the Neighbourhood Centre at 12.00noon on Wednesday, September 10. For a gold coin donation a sausage sizzle is provided, and please bring salad or plate to share. Author Jim Lergessner spoke about his recent book

The $8 Million Man
Glasshouse Country View Club Our guest speaker for our August luncheon was John Moran, a former truck driver and bush poet. He also wrote articles for the ‘Truckers Life Magazine’ for eight years. John was the instigator of the truck convoys which has raised over $8 million in the past 40 years for charities for children. One of his many stories was about a fundraising trip visiting all McDonalds outlets along the way, and raised $10,000 in seven and a half hours for the Ronald McDonald Houses. Another special moment in his life was being co-patron for the ‘Lights on the Hill Memorial’ for truckies at Gatton, of which Slim Dusty was the Patron. His other great reward was being awarded an OAM on Australia Day earlier this year. Thanks John for your efforts in making a difference to many of our children’s lives in our country. Good luck to you and Margot for any ventures you take on in the future. Our next outing is to the Caboolture Historical Museum on Wednesday, September 3. Please take along your morning tea and entry fee will be $9.90. If you wish to go, please call Pat on 5496 9285 or Pauline on 5438 7589. We welcomed another new member, Diane Cassells by presenting her with her badge. Our numbers are growing and it has been our aim to achieve a milestone of 50 members. We have now reached 48 so keep our fingers crossed that we achieve it this year. If you wish to join our club please contact Elaine on 5493 3935 or Margaret on 5435 2172.

Images at the archives
Remember travelling in those marvellous old timber panelled railway carriages which were embellished with photographs of Queensland towns, farms and tourist attractions? Queensland State Archives includes among its collections a wonderful resource titled ‘Image Queensland’ which includes photographic records from Government Departments. Within this collection can be found many of those early scenic views we remember from past train journeys. The QSA website (www.archives.qld.gov.au) outlines what you can access online: ‘Image Queensland’ enables users to search and view digital images of various public records from the collection at Queensland State Archives e.g. photographs, documents, maps and plans. Within Image Queensland you can: search for images (using names, places and keywords), browse new and featured exhibitions, and browse images by theme. QSA staff creates exhibitions of images from the collection which can be viewed in Image Queensland. Some of the online exhibition titles available to browse at present are: Agriculture in Queensland, Beach Life, Tourism in Queensland, Nursing History, Commonwealth Games, Snapshots from the Ekka, Education in Queensland, Floods, On the Home Front (WW1), and Recruitment and Enlistment (WW1). The Peachester History Committee photograph collection contains several images sourced from the Archives when we were first researching the district history: Stephen Shuttlewood's citrus orchard 1899, date palms and citrus on the Vieritz farm, and panoramic views of the Jones and Jenner farms at Crohamhurst. There are also views of the Glass House Mountains and some of our early roads. If you would like to explore the QSA photographic collections, download the ‘Image Queensland Help Guide’ from the website ...and enjoy!

La Calaca Cafe and the Clark family
Contributed by Shelly Le Vesconte La Calaca Cafe in Beerburrum had a surprise visit from the Clark family on Saturday. The brothers and sisters returned to their old stomping ground, with their extended family, to scatter the ashes of their loved ones, mum, dad, and a brother, down at the old cemetery. They returned to the cafe after their ceremony and shared stories of when they were young and frequented the old General Store to buy lollies and milkshakes. They reminisced about their school days at Beerburrum State School and their cabin style forestry home they grew up in. Trevor said all the boys slept in a tent, just outside the house, and Frankie remembered that their family moved to Beerburrum on August 1 in 1951. The family made themselves at home in La Calaca Cafe, bought lollies and milkshakes just like the old days, had a great lunch, a laugh and a good old chin wag. What a joy it was to meet the Clarks.

Glasshouse Mountains Combined Probus Club
Contributed by Val Machin It was a lovely day of memories at our meeting last month. Our Probus foundation Vice President, Keith McPaul was our meeting guest to give those of us on the day a picture of how it all started. Keith (also a past President) and his wife Judy worked with the late Keith Inglis (prominent Rotarian and our first President) and his wife Val to create a balance with guest speakers, activities, social outings along with sub groups and Keith’s love of Tai Chi to keep us all happy and healthy. Our Probus Club was based on friendship and fellowship then, and still is today. From those early days back in 2000 we still have Val, Ruth and Fred who are still part of the Club today. We have had a regular 50 members over those 14 years enjoying its rewards and that is a real plus for active retirees. Three of our previous Presidents were also able to join us that day and with them, we also recognised all those of our current group who have taken a management part in the growth of this Club. It was a memorable morning. The following week, for our social event we held a mini Games Day of golf putting and chipping, boules, croquet and horse shoe tossing. The weather held and was ideal for a relaxing day in the sun. The simple sausage sizzle topped it off. Topics of future guests will address medical research from the Berghofer Medical Institute next month then in October a presentation of lessons on the Ipad. If you would like to come along to see what we are about, we meet at 10.00am at the Glasshouse Mountains Sportsground the second Wednesday of the month and you would be welcome. Ring Val on 5494 1406 for more information.

Certificates of Appreciation, in recognition of special services, above and beyond the normal duties of a good member of the group were presented to Ian Edwardson, and in her absence, June Blackburn. The winner of this year’s Lorrie Barzdo Writer’s Award was Bev Smith, with her entry entitled ‘The Inheritance’, Bev’s story will be published in the next Caloundra Clipper. Inspired by meeting Director For those that loved The Maleny Players performance of ‘Let the Sunshine’, or those that missed out on seeing it in the very successful Maleny season, you will be pleased to know that the group are reprising the show at the Caloundra Event Centre, on September 13. Sadly for the cast they won’t have the play’s writer David Williamson at the performance as he will be overseas at the time. However, recently David joined the cast for lunch at Pomodoras (pictured), which was a great experience and inspiration for the cast who appreciated his warmth, generosity and humility.
Please note: Hoy will now only be offered once a month instead of every Friday due to the lack of response. 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah Phone: 5494 6948
He surprised them with the comment that 80% of the success of a play resides with the casting of the play. ‘Let the Sunshine’ is a satirical comedy set on the Sunshine Coast and looks at what happens when two families with differing political views and values are thrown together. Toby, a maker of hard-hitting documentaries, flees Sydney with his wife, Ros, a no nonsense successful book editor. He arrives at his old childhood haven only to find the area has been transformed into a playground for the wealthy. They are to dine with Ros's old school acquaintance, Natasha and her wealthy property developer husband, Ron. Add into the mix the couples' two apposite offspring, a struggling musician and a highly ambitious corporate lawyer, the scene is set for a night of hilarity and surprise. The Maleny Players are confident that Sunshine Coast residents can be assured of a night of fun around the foibles of two feuding couples and their children. Tickets are $32.00, concession $28.00 and are available from www.malenyplayers.org or by phoning the Caloundra Events Centre on 5491 4240. There is also a bus running from Maleny cost is $10.00 for those that require transport.

You may be too late … … if Tony Abbott and the Coalition Government SCRAP THE RET – Renewable Energy Target. This was introduced by John Howard to reduce Australia’s Green House gasses. The self professed climate change skeptic, Dick Warburton was “instructed” to prepare a report for Tony Abbott to look at ways the scheme could be folded (source: The Australian Financial Review, 25/08/14).
“Power prices will soar for households and businesses” … … claims the respected Renew Economy Newsletter. The production of solar energy, by more than a million solar households flowing into the energy grid, has kept the wholesale price of electricity down; hence it has kept the retail price of electricity down (source: CEO John Grimes of The Australian Solar Council). Hence, the remark that POWER PRICES WILL SOAR. The Federal Coalition and LNP in Queensland have a concerted agenda to get rid of renewable energy. Renewable energy is energy that is produced each day without any expense, i.e. the sunshine, the wind, the flow of water and thermal heat. The Australian Coal lobby (the coal mine owners) have great influence in the LNP and Coalition. Coal mining is not a renewable energy and coal powered electricity pollutes the air and adds to health problems, and greenhouse gases.
But both the LNP and Coalition are captives to this industry. AGL, Origin and Energy Australia have also been lobbying the Governments to SCRAP THE RET. Their interest is in buying, distributing and reselling coal power electricity to the householder. Before the Federal election, Honest Tony Abbott stated the Coalition would continue to support the Renewable Energy Target, but that was before the election. So, to the VOTING PUBLIC, let your local politician know that THEY are a renewable commodity at the next election.
What does this mean to you? 1. Higher electricity prices. 2. Much more expensive solar systems if you do not act before Tony Abbott SCRAPS THE RET. For example, currently a 5kW system will cost you about $3,600 more, if you leave it until after the RET is scrapped. The “subsidy” paid to solar purchasers is NOT a Government subsidy. It comes from the polluters of the air and is distributed to people who produce clean air electricity (solar), but because polluters will not be penalised any more, there will be no more subsidy. 3. Before Campbell sells Energex to the private sector, you should seriously consider battery storage, so you can give all of them the flick. You can have installed a 5kW BYD solar system from $6,990 including 4 free solar panels (24 panels = 6kW). Get solar, give them the flick. Talk to us at All Energy HQ urgently if you haven’t yet got solar for your business or house – and leased business premises are fine too. We have really good finance packages for both businesses and householders.
The money you save on electricity pays off your solar system. So there is often no out of pocket costs to the householder or the business.

Congratulations to all and thanks to Gary Bradford for all his time and input and to the Nambour Photographic club for the use of their display screens once again.

Australia's Renewable Energy Target (RET) has been successful over the last decade in bringing down the cost of renewable energy such as solar and wind power, as well as employing 21,000 people across the country. Millions of homes and thousands of farms and other businesses have saved on their power bills by installing solar panels or solar hot water. Thousands more farmers have drought-proofed their properties by earning money from hosting wind turbines. But all these benefits are now under threat. The RET is being reviewed by the Federal Government, and recently it was reported that Prime Minister Tony Abbott wants to close down the policy - even though the Coalition said before and after the election that it supported the scheme. All major parties have backed the policy for more than a decade after it was introduced by John Howard in 2001. Plenty of evidence shows that closing down the RET will not save you on your power bills. What it would do is cause the renewable energy industry to grind to a halt and lead to the loss of thousands of jobs in regional areas. We will also need to produce more of our electricity using fossil fuels such as coal seam gas, which will actually increase bills. If we leave the RET alone, we will get a further $15 billion of large-scale renewable energy investment, billions more in household technologies such as solar and thousands of local jobs. It's hardly any wonder that Australians want to see more renewable energy. A recent news poll found that 88% of those surveyed were in favour of governments supporting the development of more renewable energy from the sun, wind and waves. If we close down the RET, the only winners would be the owners of a handful of old coal power plants that should have been retired decades ago. Australia deserves better. Kane Thornton Acting Chief Executive, Clean Energy Council
Myla Road Bridge
In early March work was started on the Myla Road Bridge in Landsborough. Cr Rick informed us it would take three months weather permitting. Now after a very dry winter it is still not finished. There is an alternate route along Mary Street but with the increase in traffic this street is becoming dangerous when you have to go off the bitumen due to the potholes. Please could we have an update on its expected completion? W. Tuffery Landsborough
Downturn in RSL business
In reply to the letter from Mr Alan Christie (GCNews August 20) where he solicits reasons for the downturn of the Club, my own experience there may provide a pointer. Late last year my wife and I decided to take an evening meal there as we had done several times previously. Our idea of a pleasant meal is to sit quietly and talk and enjoy the ambience of the surroundings etc. Regretfully this was not to be, as we were assailed by a cacophony of noise from a TV showing sport and overlaid by a radio show, where two sporting commentators where trying to outdo each other on the merits of various cricket players. Other diners close by were also uncomfortable so I asked the barman if he could have the volume turned down, which he agreed to. The difference was negligible so we retired to the pokies area where unfortunately the noise was overbearing so
we decided to call it a night. Passing through reception I mentioned our displeasure at the wrecked evening and was told, "Oh well, that's how it is!" We have not been back since. Peter Watts Glass House Mountains
Re: Simpson Street traffic lights
Thanks for raising your concerns over the Simpson Street traffic lights in the GCNews, August 27 edition. Here is how and when it will change: as the shopping centre on the corner of Peachester Road and Simpson Street gets nearer to completion, the developer over the next two months or so will be embarking on road works at the intersection. As part of these works, some intersection lanes will change and after that, new traffic signals will be installed. The new traffic signals will sequenced and controlled once again by in road detector loops, which will control the signals to suit the traffic volumes at a given time. Until this occurs, the existing traffic signals will continue to operate on the original sequence to fixed cycle times, as an interim measure. Once the new lanes are established and new traffic signals are installed, council will then be able to also complete its road works with asphalt resurfacing of the intersection. Once all of the works are completed, council will monitor the operation of Simpson Street and Peachester Road and determine if any further changes to traffic arrangements are warranted. Hope that helps and sincere thanks for everyone’s ongoing patience during the transformation of Beerwah. Rick Baberowski | Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council
So grateful
Outside Woolworths Beerwah on Thursday, August 27, at about 10.30am I fell over, through no fault of anyone. The scary part was that I am just getting over knee surgery; however I fell backwards, so no damage was done to the site of the operation. However, I must express my gratitude to the staff of Woolies and to a young nurse who stopped to help me. I am afraid I don’t remember the name of the staff member who was of most help, but she arranged to bring some towels to put under me and made sure that she never left my side. The young nurse, who incidentally and quite comically, found that she and I shared the same nickname given us by our respective husbands (the nickname is Freckles) was a marvellous help too. She kept me calm and made sure that I was as comfy as could be expected. When the ambulance arrived I once again felt safe and calm as he checked that I had not done any lasting harm! God bless them all, for their help and caring. D Gudgeon Landsborogh
Editor’s Note Camera reunited with owner Following on from last week’s letter about the lost camera at District Sports Day the family have been reunited with the camera. Grandparents of one of the athletes who had found the camera, asked around, and then it started to rain, so they went to eat their lunch in the car and forgot all about it. When they saw the letter in the paper they gave the family a call straight away! It’s refreshing to see that human goodness is still alive!! www.gcnews.com.au
Recent SES Rescue attempt on Mt Beerwah
Contributed by Dave Erbacher Recently there has been much comment on the pro and cons on what action should be taken against people who climb our closed mountains (at the moment Crookneck, Beerwah and Tibrogargan are closed). We as a SES Group do not wish to be involved in the policies of the relevant departments, although it would be good if climbers respected these policies, but when an accident or situation occurs, we respond accordingly. Our continuing training for mountain rescues comes to the fore when we are activated for these instances. We do not undertake unsafe practices which could lead to ourselves or other climbers being placed in a dangerous situation. After the recent Mt Beerwah incident, the following message has been received from Jessie in Brisbane. ‘I just wanted to thank you guys for all your help with my Mt Beerwah rescue. You all made me feel extremely calm throughout the whole ordeal and you all do an amazing job. I definitely won’t be silly enough to ignore warning signs in the future and plan on taking a proper climbing course to gain more experience. Sorry I missed your training night as I would have liked to have thanked you all personally. Could you pass on my thanks to the helicopter crew. Your effort on the mountain for over 6 hours is incredible and I think you deserve more than a couple of ‘cold ones’. Thanks again and keep up the fantastic work.’ Group Leader Robert Barry acknowledges the great effort of all the members of the Group. The Group is a normal SES Group that happens to specialise in the mountain rescues of which there about 10 to 12 per year. We would like to welcome any persons interested in joining the Group to call myself on 0417 759 483 or Robert on 0428 894 182. There is a job for male/ females of any age as everyone is not required to participle in ‘on the mountain’ activities.
Thank you
A big thank you from your local Barber Girl from V8 Supercuts, Julie. I would like to thank Brian Stallworthy for the lovely letter of support and warm wishes welcoming me back to the lovely town of Beerwah. It was so very thoughtful of you, I really appreciate it. I would also like to thank all of my lovely clients / friends of my local community for your loyalty and support on my opening day and these past few weeks. I am highly grateful. Questioning government process?
Two news items in the Glasshouse Country News recently have caused me to question the decision making process by the government about the Glass house Mountains and their usage by the general public. First of all I question the advisability of providing more opportunities for climbers on these mountains. Some months back I attended a talk given by a member of our local SES many of whom are so frequently called upon to extricate people off our Glass House Mountains. Apparently the very nature of these mountains and unstable deteriorating rock formations leaves open the question whether we should be encouraging people to climb them at all. Particularly when our local volunteers are asked to risk life and limb, when things go wrong. In promoting tourism in this area, do we need to go down this track? To cap it all off I next read that the very people who have the greatest knowledge of these ancient landmarks have been left out of the decision making process. It all sounds like 'off the top of the head' type stuff to me without any of the consultations and research needed when managing these assets. For me the Glass House Mountains are up there with Uluru as distinctive Australian icons and should be valued accordingly. Pam Lever Glass House Mountains
Won’t convince me
I’m afraid the Kabi Kabi and Jinibara people will have a hard time convincing me that I shouldn’t climb mountains Beerwah and Tibrogargan just because it upsets their cultural beliefs (GCNews August 27). To most Australians and thousands of overseas visitors these peaks are extinct volcanos offering a little adventure, healthy physical activity and a sense of achievement once the scenic summits are reached. It must be remembered that Australia’s mountains bring huge amounts of local and tourist dollars into the government’s coffers – money that is returned to ALL in the community by way of social security, health and education payments etc. Several years ago Ayers Rock was closed to climbers because of a funeral in the local Mutitjulu clan. The cost to the local tourist facility and the Northern Territory government from cancelled visitor bookings grew rapidly and alarmingly to the point where the government was forced to negotiate a settlement with local Aborigines and re-open the climb. I’m happy for Aborigine tribes to maintain their long-held traditions and beliefs amongst themselves. However, I object to these views being forced on the wider community. Thanks to all the troopers who braved the rain and came out to support a much curtailed program last Saturday. Despite the downpours, the day brought out the spirit of our great country communities and those who came along enjoyed a great display of produce, community stalls and local strong men and women. It was also a perfect excuse to buy twice as many homemade cakes and egg and bacon rolls as usual to help out the community stall holders - all in all a great day, only let it be a bit dryer next year!

Both reported on an extremely busy past year and both signalled equally busy years ahead. These groups help create the very fabric of our communities and a special thank you to those new faces willing to assist on management committees perhaps for the first time.

Hinterland the hub for weddings and arts and culture
Our beautiful Hinterland region is renowned and cherished for many reasons, from its charming, historic towns and villages and vibrant businesses to its picturesque, rolling hills and countryside. Our wedding tourism industry is absolutely booming, currently averaging in excess of $15 million to the region annually, not surprising given we are attracting interest from locals, interstate and internationally. At their fingertips couples have access to some of the nation’s leading wedding suppliers including award winning photographers, hair and make-up stylists, florists and event planners. The Hinterland all comes together to make every wedding truly personal and memorable. And in September and October the region is also set to become ‘arts central’ while we celebrate our great artists with a range of festivals, open studios and workshops. ‘HinterLand – a celebration of place, arts and creativity’ will be staged across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland from September 19 to October 26, offering a spectacular festival of artists, makers and performers to suit all tastes and levels of experience, including Kenilworth Celebrates, Hinterland ‘Open Studios’, Sculpture on the Edge in Maleny and the Glasshouse Country Festival. www.gcnews.com.au

Earlier this year, Helen Meachen, an experienced Body Stress Release (BSR) practitioner, established Healing at Lavender, a clinic situated in Maleny from which she will provide services to the Sunshine Coast. Helen works with clients of all ages in particular those with back, leg or shoulder pain, stiff muscles, sports injuries, headaches and those who feel generally run down. When asked to describe BSR Helen said “over time tension builds up in our bodies through events as simple as a knock or a fall and as complex as prolonged physical or emotional stress. “This tension shows up as pain, tight muscles, stiffness or numbness, letting us know that our body is no longer able to adapt to the overload," Helen said.

Local Music Scene Music Today
Live & Local in September with Dr Micheal Whiticker
Micheal lives at Peachester and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner I have recently been confronted with a personal tragedy in the death of a close family member – something so far greater than any I have had to bear in my life, that when it came to writing this monthly article, anything I began seemed to pale into insignificance. So I thought I’d write a little about how I, as a creative musician, have been responding to what has happened. My first artistic reaction, within a day of the tragedy was the writing of a song. It simply poured out of me. I wanted to record it but the hurt was such that I couldn’t get it out. Eventually a heartfelt version came and, as rough as it is, it captures the overwhelming emotion of those first days. It was immediately followed by a period of intense creative and organisational activity preparing for the funeral. Collecting together years of images and videos and condensing those into some sort of chronological and or thematic whole. Then finding music - my own music, which commented on those years in some way. Taking excerpts from past pieces and reimagining them to fit a new occasion was a big part of this. A series of short videos resulted which I then spaced throughout the funeral service, allowing me to construct a simple repetitive ABAB structure, where a section A was a short video and a B section was people speaking and reflecting on the life of the departed. The opportunity to totally immerse myself in this creative task helped me during this, one of the most traumatic periods of my life. It might appear that I needed to make myself do the job, when I might otherwise have been grieving, but no, in fact it was the only way I could actually have dealt with it. Music or ‘organised sound in time’ and the creating of structures or containers that can house it, is my life. Whether it is an opera, a symphony, a concept album, a concert or a festival that I might be constructing, the art of music and the vessel in which it speaks, is a part of my essence and through it I express my love and my pain and every other possible emotion that I know. Being in the here and now with loved ones, while working with my music, is what I do. Michael www.michaelwhiticker.com.au

Jen Mize - Live and Local
By Sonia Clark GCNews caught up with talented singer-songwriter, Jen Mize just days before she’s about to head off on a busy two and half month US Radio tour to promote her debut album ‘Fear, Pride and a few Stubborn Angels’. Growing up on a ranch on the outskirts of Las Vegas, Jen spent her early years in the US, but eight years ago after falling in love with an Australian man, she relocated here permanently. Four years ago, Jen and her husband, having discovered the rural beauty of Glass House Mountains and loving the area purchased a property to call home. Encouraged by her parents, Jen picked up her first instrument - the violin at the age of three. As Jen says, all she’s ever done is music, moving on from violin to mastering the cello. Loving to sing around the house and at every available opportunity, she pursued her interest in singing from a young age, joining school choirs, musical groups and given her love of a diversity of musical styles, became Jen Mize a member of the Nevada Opera Company. Influenced by her parents appreciation of folk, classic rock and rebel country, she found that ‘once onstage was struck’ and loving to perform, Jen embraced and developed a number of creative outlets for her various talents. Her musical journey has taken her throughout America and around the world and since settling in Australia she has found her true expression as a singer songwriter. Along the way, Jen has drawn on her various influences and experiences to offer a depth and resonance to her writing. That Jen is now a fulltime singer songwriter is a testament to her talent. She regularly performs her mainly original compositions around the Sunshine Coast as well as at a number of Brisbane venues where her blend of alternative country/Americana has been well received. As a writer, she seeks to convey reflections of the human condition acknowledging the existence of both the light and the shade. She writes from a place of enquiry and honesty that is grounded in reality. Excited about her first big release, Jen looks forward to the opportunity of inviting audiences to connect with her inner voice as she embarks on an extensive 15 state national radio tour. Back on our shores in early November, Jen Mize will be definitely be one to watch. www.jenmize.com www.gcnews.com.au

It’s time to show off what Glasshouse Country has to offer, from October 17 – 26 during the Glasshouse Country Festival. The festival will open with the Beerwah Celebration and be followed the next day with a skate competition and projected art display. The Brass Quintet comprises five musicians on trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, piccolo and horn and they have international and national reputations. The show will be on Sunday, September 14 at 2.30pm at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street, Maleny. Ticket prices are $35.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members, bookings can be made online at www.malenyartscouncil.com or in person at the Maleny Visitor Information Centre. www.gcnews.com.au

Plant of the month
Nature challenge
Wattle Day was first celebrated in the early 1900’s in Tasmania, and other states joined in over time. National Wattle day is traditionally recognised as the first day of spring, though far more so in southern states. Acacias or wattles, are one of the most common Australian plant species, and are regarded as our National flower. They are one of the most suitable species for revegetation projects as they grow fast, providing shade for more sensitive plants, and being a legume they return nitrogen to the soil. They can be pruned and prunings used as nitrogen rich mulch. A large range of Acacia species can be found in the Glass House Mountains, some are large trees, but many smaller ones are suitable for home gardens. Wattles are also very beautiful in flower, many flowering a number of times throughout the year with a range of colours from golden yellow to pale cream. Sugar and squirrel gliders, two of our most loved marsupials, rely on the sap of wattles, as well as nectar and insects, as a food source. If wattles are cleared, these marsupials have been known to leave an area. A large number of butterflies and moths also rely on exudate as a food source. Bees and other insects are attracted to pollen in droves while the seed pods are sought after by various parrots. Even the bush tucker industry uses wattle seed in various baked goods, and even ice-cream. Even in waning years as the wood breaks down, these trees are utilised by various larvae, crickets and other insects which in turn are sought by large cockatoos and insectivorous wildlife.
Young local environmentalist Chloe Tsangaris has an idea that she wants to encourage others to get involved in, ‘The Nature Challenge’. It is all about planting a native tree or a small native bush in your yard or even one with flowers in a pot on your balcony for the bees to pollinate. Please take a selfie of yourself planting it and post your picture on the Paws Luv Walks facebook page or email your picture to naturechallenge@hotmail. com so Chloe can collect all of the pictures. “I’m really excited about how many people might participate to help our native wildlife,” she said. “Remember to tell other people about the idea and encourage them to get involved. “Our native wildlife will be very grateful, and you will feel so good, knowing that you made a home and or food source for some of your local wildlife.” “This is something that means a lot to me and I'm excited about sharing my idea and challenge you to take part! “My mum said I should also say if mums aren’t comfortable with a picture of their child going up on Face book that they could always take a picture of their children's hands planting the native tree or bush, or take a creative approach so that you can’t see the children’s faces,” said Chloe.
For more information on GMAN nursery sales please call Gwen: 5493 0029 or Yvonne: 5438 7118 or visit www.gman-inc.com.au

Glasshouse country has the yummiest, sweetest strawberries and pineapples I’ve ever tasted! In summer, our family and friends look forward to eating the local fruit we buy. We pass strawberry and pineapple farms every day, and all year I love watching the farmer’s journey of cultivating the soil, planting, waiting, harvesting, and then preparing for the next season. I have such great respect for our farmers. They are such hard workers, and what they prepare for all year through, is what we enjoy at our table. But no farmer harvests an amazing, full crop by accident. Just hoping for the best, without preparing for it, is like a farmer waiting for a crop without ever planting any seed. A prepared and organised farmer is an excellent farmer because their preparation shows in their next crop. He cultivates and fills the soil with nutrients and water, and then goes about his work. He diligently watches the weather, reading nature’s signs to let him know when to take his next step. After he has done everything he knows to do...he waits with expectation. The Bible calls this waiting....faith...and faith produces patience. (James 1:3)

SEPTEMBER 3 2014
The same is true for us in life! What is happening to us today is a result of our preparation yesterday - and the way we live today, will always act as a sign post indicating if there is success ahead. In Mark chapter 4, Jesus compares our heart to soil and that what we plant in our heart will determine what lifestyle we produce. God’s truths are like ‘seeds’ that we keep (or plant) in our hearts, and when we cultivate and fill our hearts with those truths, we can go about our work knowing that God’s truth always produces good fruit! Life of course, plays a part just as the weather does to a farmer - but like the farmer, if we have prepared our heart and planted the right seeds and done all that we know to do...all we have to do is wait and have faith that the next season of our life holds a crop full of God’s sweetest blessings!

End of Season Awards
The Mooloolah Soccer Club held their end of season Awards on Sunday, August 24. Despite the weather there was a good turn out and most of the junior players attended (courtesy of their parents of course). As each team came up on stage and received their trophies and the coaches handed out the Players Player and Coaches award, it became overwhelmingly obvious that the juniors from Under 6 to Under 17 had had a great season. Not every team had win after win, but they had all thoroughly enjoyed their games and playing with their team mates. Congratulations again to our Junior players of the year (a hard choice with so many talented and committed young players). Under 6 – Under 10 Male:Isaac Price, Female:- Sky Antoniolli. Under 11 – Under 17 Male:- Logan Ellis, Female:- Rebecca Pike. Our team of the year were the magnificent Under 7 Boas. A big thanks to our Club Persons of the year Todd and Pru Ellis. News of our two Competitive teams, U12 Mooloolah Strikers and the U16/17 Taipans still competing in the finals to come. U16/17 Taipans having fun in the rain

Congratulations to local team
Contributed by Svetlana de Joux The Beegees Coastal Women’s side have become the Premiers for 2014 and after winning their semi-final against Maroochydore on Friday night 2 nil. They are now straight to the Grand Final in two weeks’ time. This team, who are predominantly 15, 16 and 17 year olds have had a fantastic season and we congratulate them on their efforts so far and on becoming Premiers. There was no Under 17 girls this year so they were placed in the coastal women’s division and have shown that they are worthy of being Premiers. We would all also like to take this opportunity to thank the Coaches and Managers for their persistence with the girls and on a job well done this season. The Grand Finals will be held at Nambour Yandina FC on Friday, September 12 at 6.30pm. We look forward to seeing heaps of local support for these girls and wish them the best of luck.
