ust be something in the air with the weather getting warmer, people must be keen to get some spring cleaning done before Spring. What makes me think this? Well it seems like quite a few locals and community groups are organising garage sales which we have been promoting over the last few weeks. One you won’t want to miss is the Beerwah Bulldogs, they are organising their very first community garage sale down at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds as a way of raising funds for first aid equipment on Sunday, August 14 from 8.00am – 1.00pm. You don’t have to be part of the club to be involved, everyone is welcome to go along, to buy and sell new and used items. And from what I have heard the home made brunch to lunch menu at the club’s canteen is awesome, and it will also be open for the whole time, so don’t eat before you head along. Sites are only $15.00 each and to book a site please contact Kyra Quinn on 5439 0552 or 0419 020 601. Regards,

As Fiona Halliday and John Cassidy await the arrival of their second child – due within days - celebrations began rather earlier than expected, after the couple were given the incredible news that they had won a $1.2 million Endeavour Foundation lottery prize home in Maleny.

While John hails from northwest Scotland, Fiona is a local to the Maleny area, with family living nearby. The couple currently live just two suburbs over from the 65th Anniversary Lottery prize home. “We already feel so lucky to have just bought our first home,” said Fiona, “and then to win a second home is unbelievable! It’s still making my head spin.” They’re still overwhelmed about their $1.2 million win and are considering their options. At the moment they’re still splitting their time between both homes. “We have a lot of family coming to visit soon from overseas and now we have plenty of space for everyone,” said Fiona. “It’s such a gift for the weight of financial pressures to be lifted. It means we can have more time for family and less stress overall. We feel so blessed.” Fiona purchased tickets while visiting the prize home after a friend mentioned it was open up the road. “I usually just buy the one ticket, but bought 10 this time,” said Fiona. “It’s for a great cause

Ava shows off the family's new home that we’re happy to support! I think the work that Endeavour does is so important and really helps to change the lives of those it reaches. I never in forever thought that we might actually win! It was enough just to know that we were supporting something worthwhile.” Fiona also added that after she bought the tickets the couple’s three year old daughter, Ava, sprinkled some fairy dust on them for good luck. Maybe that did the trick! Executive General Manager of Supporter Enterprises Andrew Thomas said that the Endeavour Foundation lotteries are all about ‘making dreams come true’. “There’s never just one winner, because the funds we raise help us to deliver on the ambitions of the people we support,” Andrew said.

Tower updates – Beerwah, Glass House and Eudlo Sunshine Coast Council have refused a development application from Optus for a mobile phone tower at Clarkes Road, Beerwah. The application (MCU 16/0029),which GC&M News reported earlier this year in edition April 6, to construct a 40-plus metre tower on rural residential land adjacent to Old Landsborough Road, generated 18 community submissions, with 15 against and three for. According to the Council refusal notice, their grounds for not accepting the application were that it conflicted with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014 with regard to the protection of scenic routes and the Telecommunications Facility code; and that the proposal did not demonstrate sufficient grounds in the public interest to justify or override the conflicts. And Council is again off to court to fight another two appeals relating to refused NBN wireless broadband tower applications. The application (MCU15/0251) to erect a 56 metre wireless broadband tower within the Glasshouse Mountains Camping Ground on Old Gympie Road Glass House – which GC&M News reported in edition November 18, 2015 – was refused by Council in mid-June this year. In a move mirroring that which NBN commenced for the refused Beerwah NBN tower, an appeal has been lodged with the Planning and

Environment Court to have Council’s refusal overturned. An appeal for the refusal of a 41 metre NBN tower at 419 Mooloolah Road, Eudlo (MCU15/0260) which Council refused for similar reasons on June 30 this year, has also been lodged with the Planning and Environment Court. It appears Council’s legal representatives are going to be busy over the coming months.

Motorbike race dispute turns ugly Last week, the debate over the Sunshine Coast Tourist Trophy (TT) International motorcycle race proposal through Maleny and surrounds took a nasty turn when offensive graffiti was sprayed onto two roads at Maleny. Residents awoke on Tuesday morning to find that a person or persons unknown had sprayed ‘WE WILL RACE’ onto the roadway at Centenary Drive; whilst the Maleny – Stanley River Road, near the Burnett Lane intersection, was tagged with ‘F**K OFF WE WILL RACE’ in large white letters. Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Main Roads both reacted swiftly to remove the disturbing vandalism from the streets which are part of the proposed race track route. Over the past few weeks, both the pro TT and the anti-race sides have displayed vigour in their campaigning, which at times has crossed the line into theatrics, with allegations of bullying, abuse and over-the-top assertions and declarations. However, both groups have been quick to disown any association with the defacement, with promises of swift Police action if one of their supporters is responsible. Both sides have been just as quick to proffer accusatory theories as to why it must have been perpetrated by somebody on the opposite team. Tellingly and according to many, the misdeeds do no favours to anyone’s particular argument, let alone to the reputation of Maleny as a friendly, open and welcoming town. Local Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay is similarly unimpressed.
www.gcnews.com.au
“The graffiti was removed ASAP and this type of messaging will not be tolerated,” said Cr McKay. “Anyone who witnesses or wishes to report instances of excessive noise, traffic and/or acts of vandalism, should contact Maleny Police.” The controversy surrounding the proposed event is trying her patience. “It is very disappointing that communities cannot have good discussions without going to lengths of discrediting each other. “This was a proposal; I have heard the community regarding their concerns but I also wish to acknowledge residents that were prepared to hear out the proposal. “The Sunshine Coast Events Board is still awaiting a completed application from the proponent. “I feel disappointed that the applicant has not provided all the information that would have enabled the community and levels of government to understand the full proposal, impacts both environmental and social and economic benefits."
Beerwah CWA and IGA working together
The exciting new CWA’s Country Kitchens program is kick starting in our community this week. A series of five monthly interactive nutrition workshops will be run by accredited practicing dietitians. The local Beerwah IGA has financially contributed to the Beerwah CWA Branch by sending five of the 10 participants to the workshops. Store Manager Rose Moana will be joining Beerwah CWA members and representatives from Glasshouse Girl Guides each month. Participants of the workshops will be enhancing their food skills and knowledge at both individual and community level. Topics such as the Australian Dietary Guidelines, less salt more flavour, and too much of a sweet thing will be covered. Keep an eye out for further news and community events with the Country Kitchen over the following months. If you are passionate about improving the health of our community it is not too late to get on board. Please call Debbie on 0400 027 591.

Animal lovers from far and wide will be able to enjoy an overnight encounter at Australia Zoo following Sunshine Coast Council’s approval of Australia Zoo's expansion plans. Australia Zoo will expand onto its adjoining 29.21 ha Beerwah site, providing a dedicated ‘live in’ experience for zoo patrons. The nature based tourism project will consist of eight cabins, 32 recreational vehicle sites and 68 bush camp sites, a reception area and amenities. The project had been architecturally designed to blend with the site’s natural attributes with all buildings being single storey and include existing and restored natural bush land buffers to provide the ultimate camping experience in the most authentic and natural surroundings. Visitors staying at the camping site will be able to walk directly to the zoo via a pedestrian link across Irwin Road. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the approved short-term accommodation in a natural setting will be an additional attraction for tourists or travellers in its own right; a way to get away from it all and reconnect with the natural world.
Treasurer Curtis Pitt is urging all Queenslanders to make sure they’re counted in the nationwide Census on Tuesday, August 9. From August 1, households will receive a letter from the Australian Bureau of Statistics with a unique Census login, and instructions on how to complete the Census online. Paper forms will still be available to households that require them. Mr Pitt said because federal funds are often distributed on a per capita basis, every Queenslander who is not counted on August 9 potentially costs our state an estimated $5,300. “But to do that we need accurate Census data to help build a complete picture of our communities,” he said. Mr Pitt said the Census on August 9 was run by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and aimed to count all people in Australia including close to two million Queensland dwellings and almost five million Queenslanders. “The information collected as part of the national Census provides a snapshot of Queensland’s people – where we live, what we do, and how we live,” he said. All about children and families When Poppy started her first day at Beerwah Kindergarten this year, she proudly wore the slightly faded green t-shirt her father Ben Leggett had worn 23 years earlier. It has become a family tradition that started in 2014, when Poppy’s cousin Bella wore the pink kindy t-shirt her mother Kahlia Campbell wore in 1995. With second child Kai at kindy this year, Kahlia said she ‘couldn’t imagine’ sending her children anywhere else as she still carried fond memories of her time at the popular kindy. “When I walked back in here, I was like ‘Oh my gosh,’ because it pretty much feels and smells exactly like I remembered it,” Kahlia said. “Everyone that comes here loves it and when I came, I was a really shy kid, so it was great for me to meet new friends, which I kept all through primary school.” Ben and Kahlia’s mother Cheryl Leggett said it had been a blast from the past to see her grandchildren wearing the t-shirts she had kept in their parents’ ‘special boxes’ for years. “The shirts scrubbed up well with a bit of Napisan,” she quipped. “Poppy and Kai are busy making their little friends and learning while playing, so we know by the end of kindy, they will be right before they go to school.” Beerwah Kindy co-director Katie Piva said while a lot had changed to the physical appearance of the centre and the amount of resources available to students had greatly expanded, the sense of community felt by everyone involved with the

Cheryl Leggett, Ben Leggett, Kahlia Campbell and Katie Piva, (front) Bella, Kai and Poppy kindy had remained as strong as ever. “So much has changed in that time, but the core values and philosophy of the kindy are still the same – it’s all about the children and the families. “It is lovely that families continue to return with the next generation. "I taught Kahlia and Ben when they were here and it is a real privilege and very special to be teaching their children now." The Beerwah Kindy, at 9 Free Street, will host its annual Open Day on August 6 from 9.30am 11.30am. It is a great opportunity for families to meet the teachers and get a feel first-hand of how warm and welcoming the Lady Gowrie-affiliated kindy is. By Sonia Clark Hinterland Couple Harold and Beryl Dellaway have a double celebration to share with family (four daughters, three sons, 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren) and friends. On July 28 they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and this year also marks Harold’s 90th birthday. Harold was born in November in 1926 at Caboolture. As was usual for the times, he left school at 13 to help keep his father’s wood depot going at Redcliffe. His father sold the depot and the family moved to Peachester where they bought a dairy farm which Harold worked on. Harold was called up to go to war but was exempt because of his family owning a dairy farm. Following the war, Harold went timber cutting and worked at the Peachester Saw Mill followed by various jobs including working on a cattle station out West and at the wheat transport depot. Returning to the Coast a young lady called Beryl caught his eye. Beryl (nee Chaplin) was born in July in 1932 at Peachester. After leaving school, Beryl went to live with her sister Irene and husband Harry Roy. Following school, Beryl went to work at Comino’s Drapery shop at Caloundra. Beryl, Irene and Harry would often attend the dances at Beerwah Hall and this is where Harold and Beryl first met. When asked recently about their meeting, Harold and Beryl reminisced that they had met at one of the popular progressive dances at Beerwah - and apparently Harold had his eye on Beryl for a while. When it came to their turn to dance together, they struck up a conversation and made plans to meet up the following week-end at the beach at Caloundra with friends. Harold remembers that Beryl had a rather nice bathing suit on!
Harold and Beryl Dellaway on their wedding day July 28, 1951 Beryl went for a swim on her own near the Caloundra bar and it was only when a bit later on that Harold and the friends on the beach realised that she had been pulled right out and caught in a rip. Harold rushed in to pull her into shore which was a bit of an effort and the rest as they say is history. Harold and Beryl were married on a lovely sunny winters’ day on July 28, 1951 at the Caloundra Methodist Church with 80 guests in attendance. After living for a while under Beryl’s parent’s house, they bought a farm at Bells Creek - which they paid off by cutting timber on the property with cross cut saws and selling it. Harold got a job at CSRIO which he held for the next 18 years. Over the years the couple bought another farm at Pine Camp Road, Beerwah where they grew a variety of crops and raised chickens and kept bees and well as running a fish and chip shop and travelling around Australia. On tips for 65 years of marriage; Beryl says true love doesn’t always run smoothly but they both agree that sticking together through good and bad times has served them well, as well as having a lot of respect for each other. Finally, Beryl would like to thank Harold for saving her life that day and giving her seven wonderful children and 65 years of life together.

Despite being a rainy day, over 150 people turned up and over $1,300 was raised for ‘Need a Feed’, The Cancer Council of Australia and The Rainbow Child Foundation. Organiser Jennifer Williamson from Need a Feed Beerwah was thrilled with the outcome of the fundraising event that was instigated by her daughter Anastasia. “The expo went very well. There was a real community feel about it and plenty of smiles. The models on the day were just exceptional on the catwalk,” she said.
The local Rotary club and Sunshine Girls ran the kitchen, Adreinne from Marie Gardens was the MC for the event, Teghan’s Dance Club put on a great show, and the local Girl Guides picked up donations on the door. The workshops on the day proved popular especially the studio set up by Whisper Images, who made the day fun for everyone that attended. Feedback from attendees was awesome, and organisers would like to thank all the associations, stores and volunteers in the community that came together to make the ‘modelling expo’ a fantastic afternoon out for a great cause.

The axeman returns
Steve Lehmann has been collecting axes since 1992 and has amassed over 1,700 of them. And for this year’s Charity Sports Day display he’ll be bringing a varied selection from his collection including his racing axes. This is particularly fitting as Beerwah and the surrounding district was the centre of a timber felling and logging industry, and many of the men went on to compete in wood chop events at local and interstate shows. Steve’s collection includes battle axes from medieval times, axes from Australia’s earliest colonial times used for felling timber and to make the colony’s first buildings, adzes and hatchets for making shingle roofs and axes of all kinds from all over the world. It truly is a remarkable collection. Steve’s wife, Maree, has a collection of her own an incredible array of egg beaters. If you thought beating an egg white was a simple process, you’ll be amazed at the diversity and ingenuity behind some of Maree’s collection. She’ll be bringing part of her collection along to add to their display at the Charity Sports on August 20. Mark the date on your calendars now; check out the Beerwah Charity Sports Facebook page for ongoing updates and remember all proceeds of the day go to Cancer Council Queensland.
Move over Masterchef we are looking for Wittachef! ‘Wittafest’ is on again this year on Saturday, September 17 and already we are looking for talented bakers to volunteer their treats for our guests. Wittachef aims to involve many locals who will be entered into ‘The Most Worshipful Wittafest Guild of Baking Excellence'– a prestigious certificated honour. It’s interesting to look back to what people were enjoying during the period we will be commemorating at Wittafest this year from 1900 to 1929. Around 1900 the Lamington is thought to have been invented by Armand Galland, chef to Queensland Governor Lord Lamington, when he cobbled together a cake from leftovers for some unexpected guests. Coconut was a very new ingredient at the time and was a great way to add flavour to biscuits including one favourite, the ANZAC.
MooFest on again
Following last year’s success, MooFest is back again on September 10, this family friendly music festival is a donation entry with all funds raised at the gate going to support Fusion Sunshine Coast and their work with at risk youth. Fusion Sunshine Coast is a youth and community organisation that believes that strong communities are essential for raising this generation of young people. Jesse from Fusion said they are very excited to be involved with Moofest this year! "Events like Moofest are brilliant for strengthening local communities as they

Peachester CWA Update
Contributed by Coral Beutel Our markets were held on June 25 and were a success, although we had no power. Hats off to our rural fire brigade who saved the day. Hot soup and hamburgers were cooked on the gas barbecue and a generator was brought in to supply water for the toilets and to make tea and coffee. After being up all night fighting a bushfire started by fallen power lines, they still worked the canteen and helped clean up. Five of our members went to the Maleny CWA’s AGM and two members attended the Christmas in July in the Peachester Hall. On July 26 we held our AGM with Coral Beutel elected President, Bev Wild, Secretary, Margaret Ferris, Treasurer, Joan Kropp, Vice President and Cath Howitt, International Officer. Guest speakers for the day were Vicki and Brian from the Beerwah Police Station who were informative about the work they do as volunteers. What a wonderful service these people provide for our community. A lovely 80th birthday cake was cut by Bev Wild and Margaret Ferris to celebrate their birthdays. Margaret Wallas was 80 also, but was away sick.
It was also around this time that the humble Sao came into existence, picnics became fashionable and 'putting the billy on' came into our language. Remember that to stay with the era of 1900s as we’re very keen on authenticity for this very unique event! If you would like to take part in baking tasty, bite-sized treats please contact Corinna 0448 390 569. Denis Hickey President of Witta Recreation Club is hoping for many volunteers
encourage people to interact, have fun and become more connected," said Jesse. MooFest is all about families, it’s affordable for all with a donation entry, amazing live bands all day long, Kids Zone and the incredible JC Epidemic BMX stunt guys!! MooFest is also about bringing awareness to the amazing charities that are on the coast that help locally and internationally, like Destiny Rescue, Life without Barriers and Scripture Union. The event is proudly supported by major sponsor Whites IGA Mooloolah, Sunshine Coast Council, Sue Joseph at Bassett Barks, Mooloolah Valley Community Association and many churches. Manager of Mooloolah IGA Ken said he is happy to support this fabulous event that promotes Mooloolah and provides families with a fun day of music and entertainment. MooFest is on Saturday, September 10 at the Mooloolah Recreation Ground from 11.00am to 5.30pm. Any not-for-profit organisations that would like to join in the event by having a stall contact Nat Pettingill on 0409 670 552 for further details. For more information visit www. moofest.com.au or visit us on Facebook!
Happy birthday ladies and keep up the marvellous work. We have donated to many needy charities and worked thousands of volunteer hours and hope to keep doing so over the next year. If you would like to join our happy little group, please ring Coral on 5494 9775. A big thank you to the menfolk who have helped us throughout the year, the stallholders who keep our markets going, and also the rural fire members, who have run the canteen at the markets.

Small town nurtures big dreams
Business feature Dalby is a town located on the Darling Downs approximately 200 kilometres north northwest of Brisbane. Dalby holds a special place in the heart of those at Transportable Shade Sheds as it is the home town of the company’s director. This is the place that nurtured the man that would go on to have the vision to develop Transportable Shade Sheds. In a similar vein of success – Global Business Manager Tyler MacLaren hopes that the Dalby reseller Darren Spies will also be able to grow his business to extraordinary levels. Darren is a successful commercial plumber who is looking to diversify from his core business. Looking into viable options, Darren came across ads for Transportable Shade Sheds on Facebook and, recognising the long term company name and additional business potential, decided to explore the reseller options for the Darling Downs region. “Working as a plumber for over 25 years and with a family of five children to support, I was keen to ‘get my fingers into a few more pies’. My wife and I have been looking at other additional businesses to get into and we saw the similarities in the two business models – essentially we are selling a product being a plumber which is no different to selling a product which is a shed,” explained Darren. Darren has been working in his industry since 1991 and has been running his own company for the last 10 years. While he concentrates on commercial plumbing he and his team also do domestic and maintenance work. He was drawn to becoming a reseller as he believes that each of his businesses opens doors to the other. Since becoming a reseller a couple of months ago Darren has already incorporated the Transportable Shade Sheds business – called Darling Downs Shade Shelters – onto his corporate workwear and marketing material so that every available opportunity to promote both his businesses is reached. While Darren remains committed to his main business, currently he is aiming to get the Transportable Shade Sheds side of things ticking along on the side. “I feel like the sky’s the limit and we are aiming high. While I already have a regular income, at the moment anything extra is a bonus – who knows where this will all lead with future business opportunities,” said Darren. Darren’s new venture is also bringing attention to Saver6.com which is a great thing for the people in the area. As the platform is designed to give individuals and existing businesses the opportunity to increase their income, having a Saver6.com small business owner in Dalby is a very welcomed concept. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Darling Downs area contact Darren via social media or on 0429 012 133. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss, or look at a business option that may work well with your current industry, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.
National Stihl dealer of the year award Sunshine Coast Mowers at Caloundra and Mooloolaba have just returned from the international STIHL conference in Thailand where they were awarded Australian dealer of the year with 450 dealers nationally competing for the title. Sunshine Coast Mowers owner, Hayden Cook said that the award comes as a nice surprise after taking the plunge 18 months ago to expand the business, he originally started with his dad 14 years ago. “After dad passed away, my brother Gerard, brother in-law James and I decided we really wanted to continue a legacy in memory of dad (David Cook). So we opened the Caloundra store in December 2014.” “Since then we have had a lot of support from the local community which we attribute back to our family business values and our staff who love what they do and provide exceptional customer service,” Hayden said. Three years ago, they had one store and four staff members and Haden said he never imagined that the opening of the second store would lead to them employing over 14 staff in 2016. “I think dad would be proud of what we have achieved in a short amount of time, and being named Stihl dealer of the year is a nice way to be acknowledged for our achievements,” he said. The national Stihl dealership award is based on a customer service loyalty score where customers are surveyed by Stihl and award a score to the store they purchased from, it also takes into consideration the store presentation of Stihl products and a component is based on highest sales. In 2015 Sunshine Coast Mowers won Honda QLD dealer of the year for the highest sales volume and in 2014 was awarded Highest Sales Growth in Australia with Honda. Hayden said he definitely thinks the awards can be attributed to their passion for customer service. “My brother Gerard and brother in law James played a huge role in the team dynamics that allowed the business to grow over the past 18 months, our whole family and team has put in the hours to ensure we offer our customers quality service and products. “We are proud to say we service equipment of any make/model and provide a peace of mind warranty on products we sell, plus we offer a pickup and delivery service,” Hayden said. Sunshine Coast Mowers stock a great range of brands such as Stihl, Honda and John Deere, with products including lawn mowers, whipper snippers, leaf blowers, generators for camping, chainsaws, pressure cleaners and spare parts. The Caloundra store is located at 31 Caloundra Road, for more information call Sunshine Coast Mowers on 5444 2577 or visit www. sunshinecoastmowers.com.au

Guarding your plants You may have noticed Pink Corflute Guards on revegetation projects such as the Maleny Community Precinct plantings, at Mary Cairncross, Skippy Park and many more. These tree guards are simply the best when it comes to protecting your planted stock from weather extremes, nibbling fauna and accidental damage when controlling weeds (spraying and slashing). The high quality corflute material and seasoned hardwood stakes (supplied by a SE QLD timber mill) make for a great effective, long lasting product. Planting is an investment that we often under value, but we are investing our time, we are investing in the future and we are often investing in plants that are sometimes rare and hard to get hold of, so it really is worth investing in tree guards to make sure all plants are protected to ensure we reap the benefits of our planting projects, be they big or small! Also great new mulch mats we’ve just started stocking are Fibre Mulch Mats. They are made from durable palm fibre and swell to approximately 1-2 cm thick when installed. These in combination with the Pink Corflute Guards make for a great package to establish tubestock whether that is for revegetation or in your garden. Forest Heart is your local supplier for Pink Coreflute Guards, Fibre Mulch Mats and of course a great range of local native plants for your revegetation and garden.
Environment Container deposit scheme for Queensland The Sunshine State will have a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) to get drink cans and bottles off our beaches, and out of our parks and public areas that will start in 2018. With Queensland and New South Wales entering into high-level talks, about setting up a single-scheme administrator, to create a seamless system that will be good for the environment and friendly for business. A single administrator could cover both states to deliver the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness. Labor committed to investigate cash for a containers-style scheme at the last election, because litter is a real concern for so many Queenslanders and we have one of the lowest recycling rates in the country. Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said Queenslanders also understand that plastic litter especially is a major threat to our waterways and our precious coastal marine environment. “We are looking at aligning our scheme with NSW, where people will be able to take empty drink containers to a collection depot, or place it in a reverse vending machine to receive a 10-cent refund. In NSW, most drinks sold in containers between 150ml and three litres will be included – with eligible containers to be clearly marked. “Plain milk, pure juice and wine containers are not included in the scheme,” he said. Scout Association of Australia, Queensland Branch General Manager, Trevor Ruthenberg said he strongly supported the Government’s initiative and looked forward to working closely with Dr Miles. “I know of no other scheme that the whole community can embrace that will not only provide a significant environmental benefit, but will also provide a boost to helping to cover the cost of providing the Scouting program. Dr Miles said the Government would be consulting in coming months and seeking feedback on the best way to implement the scheme to ensure it was ‘truly state-wide’. “This is where community groups and other organisations can help and potentially get an enormous benefit out of the scheme. We want to talk to as many people as possible before the end of the year,” he said.

Aquatic plants are important components of streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. They oxygenate the water, reducing stagnation, and keep it clean by absorbing nutrients and other minerals and salts attached to suspended solids. Aquatic plants are primary producers, converting nutrients and sunlight into plant matter, which fuels all life within the waterway. They provide food, shelter, habitat and shade for aquatic invertebrates, including insect larvae, snails and freshwater shrimps, and also for fish, frogs, turtles and waterbirds. Plants slow water flows, and their roots stabilise sediments and river banks, reducing erosion. Local native aquatic plants include emergent species such as Rushes and Sedges, submerged plants such as Pondweed, Ribbonweed and Water Milfoil, and floating plants, for example Duckweed, Nardoo and Native Waterlily. However, one of the greatest threats to streams and dams comes from introduced plants, which often originate from home aquariums or garden ponds. These weeds proliferate, smothering out native plants, sucking oxygen from the water, preventing light penetration and reducing the quality of the natural habitat. They also affect recreational and aesthetic values of local waterways. Aquatic weeds of greatest concern in our local area include Alligator Weed, Cabomba, Water Hyacinth, Salvinia (pictured) and Water Lettuce, all of which are declared weeds. Use only local natives in your garden pond, as visiting birds can spread weeds, as can flooding. Never empty aquarium water into a waterway. And always check boats, trailers, propellers and fishing nets for plant material both on entering and leaving waterways. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? School News Grandparents day
Imagination comes to life
Glasshouse Christian College held its annual Grandparents’ Day last Friday and it was the biggest one yet. The doors opened early so grandparents could have a seat before enjoying a sumptuous morning tea created and hosted by the Hospitality students. The church was decorated with items from the 50s and 60s and Head of Christian Students Mr Bert Kasselman gave the welcome. Mr Kasselman spoke of time when phones needed to be plugged in and typewriters didn’t; when you could cram into the back of a station wagon with no seat belts and when Maroochydore only had three high rise buildings. Grandparents were treated to a concert which included songs by the junior choir ‘Little Voices’, two Dance items, a trio singing Detectives in Ruby Smith, Ryan Stead and Aden Draper sing 'Detectives in Disguise'
Grandparents were served a sumptuous morning tea by GCC Hospitality students
Disguise, a trombone solo and an astounding rendition of The Man from Ironbark by six-yearold Isabella Buckland. Children’s faces lit up as they spotted their grandparents in the audience and it took all their effort not to run down from the stage for an early hug. There were special activities and displays in each of the classrooms. Grandparents decorated gingerbread men, coloured in activity sheets, played maths on iPads, made origami finger puppets, played chess, read books together and had a thoroughly good time.
This term the Prep students at Mooloolah State School are focusing on fairy tales and nursery rhymes. With the guidance and inspiration of the Prep teacher Ms Catherine Cavanagh, and the teacher aide Mrs Catherine Matthies, the students are engaged in their learning through play based activities. They are identifying with the stories and rhymes through various activities including cooking, reading, construction, art, drawing, role play, maths and writing. They are creating some wonderful masterpieces, including building castles from shapes they have learnt about. They are large castles that they have added dragons and moats to. They have studied ‘Queen of Hearts’, which the children were able to recite and they made jam drops in the shape of hearts. They have also looked at Sleeping Beauty and The Ginger Bread Man. The amazing efforts of some of the Prep students have allowed them to receive a Principals award for their writing task on the Ginger Bread Man. The students are having so much fun with their learning and using their imaginations to expand their play and creativity. Well done to the Prep students and teachers for the wonderful work. Witta to the world and back!
A global search for stories! We at the Witta Recreation Club (WRC) are inviting your readers to reach out to anyone with links to Witta in Australia and across the globe to let them know about our webpage and Facebook page where we are gathering the stories of Witta’s culture. Whether they are one of the original peoples of the area, a decendant of one of the pioneer families such as Vandreike, Nothling, Warne, Sommer, Bobbermein, Tesch or have simply a Witta story to tell. Wittafest is fun, free, family-friendly and run by volunteers. It brings community together to participate in and create our cultural heritage, right in the centre of old Maleny. Witta preserves the original pioneer centre of Maleny Parish. It will be held on Saturday, September 17 and this year's focus is 19001929. The venue is our club, the land having been donated some time ago by the family of one of the early pioneers, the Vandreikes. What makes this event very different is that it is built on by you the folks who come that day that form the cast of a traditional gathering; singing along to live music, drinking and eating gourmet traditional fare, dressing up in period costume, hearing historic stories, taking part on our tours and playing old-fashioned games of the era. You will be creating our Witta culture! All proceeds will go to the WRC. Fiona Emberton Wittafest Committee
Past it and overlooked
There is a lot of discussion about a proposed motor cycle time trial in the coast hinterland. There are promises of the influx of a large number of people, business profits, tourist increases, money to the coast, commerce, jobs and growth. Nowhere do I see or hear mentioned the pleasure of riding or watching a powerful, sophisticated machine on traffic free, rural, scenic roads. I am checking the mail every day, looking for my invitation to compete, but I fear I may be past it and overlooked. Ian Pollock Witta
Dogs off lead
We have the same problem here at Peachester, dogs off leads. The people don't seem to care, and as a visionally impaired person, it does concern me. My dogs are always on lead and under
control. I would be in trouble if the dogs that are off lead decided to attack my dogs. These people just think it's okay to walk their dogs off lead when it's not. I agree with the ‘crazy cat lady’ do the right thing, walk your dog on a lead. Julianne Dickinson Peachester
That’s a lot of doggie-do
Today I picked up six lots of dog poo, all different sizes, in front of my house, or next to the drive. This is becoming almost a daily occurrence. I notice every day, dog walkers walking by, some of you even say hello, and I don't see many carrying a plastic bag. I walk two dogs as well, but I don't let my dogs poop on your lawn without picking it up. For all those people who walk along Water Gum Crescent, please have some consideration. Pam Shoobridge Maleny
TT is madness
Re: the current proposal to close hinterland roads for a major Isle of Man styled motorcycle event. As a former race driver, mechanic, meeting organiser and motoring journalist, this four-day event is patently ridiculous for this location. Apart from the disruption to the local population, large areas of land would be needed for the race pits, trailer parking, trade tents, camping and spectator access, plus roadside vegetation clearing for the placement of spectator barriers. There have been many deaths over the years at the Isle of Man event, and to race on unfamiliar roads where uncontrolled spectators and farm dogs will wander onto the track; at the 44 metres per second approach speed of a racing motorbike, there’s no time to dodge! It will be impossible to enlist enough crowd control Marshalls to police the entire circuit, and even experienced flag and fire officials have previously been killed by out of control racing machinery. I have been involved in motorsport for almost 60 years, and I do not want to see professionally organised race meetings set back for a decade, because of one ill-conceived event. Motor racing has always been a dangerous sport for riders, drivers and spectators, so why increase these risks? Noel Tuckey Former Landsborough Resident

You Said It Open letter to Sunshine Coast Council
On behalf of the Towerless NBN for Maleny & Hinterlands group and local residents, I want to pass on a few thoughts: • Thank you for having a Planning Scheme which recognises the amenity of our area • Thank you for having a Planning Scheme which sets out clearly the distances which a microwave tower should be from houses, schools and other sensitive areas • Thank you for having a review process for any Development Application which carefully considers all of the requirements for proposed towers. Local people seek to have a Broadband System that is an improvement on existing services. This should not be to the detriment of amenity aspects of the Plan nor should it be to the potential detriment of people, wildlife and flora. People appreciate Council’s preparedness to stand up against the overbearing expectations of NBN that Council will just approve their applications. The NBN designs and proposals should be done to meet the Council’s standards for Planning. Submission by NBN of a proposal which clearly does not comply, is not acceptable. It is hoped that the President of the Planning and Environment Court respects the intent, sanctity and wording of the Planning Scheme so as to uphold the desire of Council for that Scheme to be there for the residents. How can you stay satisfied with your home loan? Home loans can take a very long time to pay off – about 30 years tends to be the industry standard. Plenty can change over that amount of time, and we aren’t just talking about the interest rate. You could decide that you aren’t happy with your current loan provider. A recent Roy Morgan poll, for example, revealed that people were losing confidence in the four big banks, with home loan customer satisfaction dropping compared to last year. Thankfully, however, there are alternatives to big banks. Mortgages can come from all sorts of different lenders, and a mortgage broker can help you find them. So how can we help you stay satisfied with your home loan? Is it time to reweigh your home loan? 20

Start as you mean to finish The easiest way to deal with this problem is to make sure you don’t run into it in the first place. People often stick with their current bank or previous lenders when it comes to home loan, and that may be okay for the time being. You may be very satisfied with your bank and be willing to pay a potentially higher rate than you would otherwise for them to be your mortgage supplier. However, many people don’t seem to realise that the credit market is a competitive one. The reason that mortgage brokers exist is to ensure that you get as many options as possible. Start as you mean to finish with your home loan – go to a mortgage broker
and get the full story. Refinance if you need to Good credit is a valuable commodity, and one you can use to negotiate a better rate. There may come a time when you want to leverage that good credit you’ve been earning in order to get a lower interest rate throughrefinancing your loan. Perhaps you want to buy an investment property or go on a really fantastic holiday, so you need to access the equity in your home. This gives you an opportunity to see what other lenders can offer you for being your customer. Good credit is a valuable commodity, and one you can use to negotiate a better rate. If you’re

part of the two in three Australians that CoreLogic RP Data reports are concerned about the property market, it pays to make the most of your home loan and remain satisfied with your lender. So if you’re feeling unsatisfied with your loan, get in touch with a mortgage broker and see how you can improve your situation!

Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Healthy Waterways Award
I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2016 Healthy Waterways Awards where council received a special highly commended award for the Pumicestone Passage and Catchment Action Plan 2013-2016. This recognition certainly provides validation of council’s work to become Australia’s most sustainable region. The project promoted the values, understanding and sustainable use of the catchment and waterways.
Educating the next generation
I am pleased to announce six local heritage groups were lucky enough to receive $29,800 in funding thanks to Council’s Heritage Levy funded Resourcing the Region grant. The grant aims to develop new educational resources which supports increased visitation to museums and cultural heritage organisations. The funding will help educate the next generation of heritage enthusiasts and volunteers. The successful recipients included Queensland Air Museum, Kenilworth and District Historical Association, Landsborough and District Historical Society Inc., Eumundi and District Historical Association, Buderim Historical Society Inc. and BuderimPalmwoods Heritage Tramway Inc.
Proposed motorcycle event
Firstly, I would like to assure you that no commitment has been made by council to the staging of this event. The Sunshine Coast Events Board – which assesses all major event sponsorship proposals – has responded to the proponent’s initial incomplete application seeking further information. Until such time as this information is supplied, neither the Events Board nor Council is in a position to progress the application further. If the proposal progresses, the proponent will be required to conduct additional community engagement. During this process I encourage you to speak directly with the event promoter. I can also assure you that the views of the community will be taken into account during any future decision making process associated with this event proposal.
Hinterland Youth Facility
During my last ‘Meet and Greet’ session, one concern raised from a local resident was the lack of youth recreation areas within our Division. I believe a recreation area designated for the young people in our community would be a valuable addition. I am very interested to hear the wider community views and feedback on the proposal of a youth facility. Please join me for my next ‘Meet and Greet’ session which will be held on Friday, August 12 from 10.00am – 11.30am at Banjo’s Bakery Café, Beerwah Market Place, Peachester Road, Beerwah.

State Member for Caloundra Mooloolah Community Centre What a show of support and sense of community we all saw with the Mooloolah Community Centre petition. In just two months, more than 2,000 people signed the petition that asked the State Government to issue a long-term lease (50-99 years) or donate the freehold title of the land it currently operates on at 43 Bray Road. They desperately need one of the two to carry out capital works on the property and continue serving the wonderful town of Mooloolah. Unfortunately the Education Minister, Kate Jones, rejected their request, citing the current lease expires in 2025 and is happy to review the extension of 10 years then. She also said the centre could in the meantime purchase the property at full market value. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think the volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to helping others have a spare $500,000. While this result is disappointing, it’s not the end of the Mooloolah Community Centre, who will continue to fight the good fight for the 4553 postcode. I am happy to continue working with them to achieve their goals for our community. In the meantime why not show your support further for the community centre? They have one of the best op-shops on the Sunshine Coast, hold a community barbecue every month, provide a JP service, counselling, financial relief and hold great classes regarding cooking and permaculture and more.
SCUH bus routes
Translink are overhauling and introducing new bus routes from 2017 to coincide with the opening of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The next information session is being held at the Caloundra Library August 12 from 9.00am – 3.00pm. Unfortunately for hinterland residents wanting to access the hospital it means they will have to catch services to Caloundra, Maroochydore or Sippy Downs and then transfer to another route to get there. What we don’t want to see is it taking more than two hours for someone living in Landsborough to access the hospital at Kawana when a car ride takes just 25 minutes. I strongly urge you to look at the proposals and provide feedback in person or online www.haveyoursay.translink.com.au by August 14.
Listening Post
I’m happy to report I will be holding another listening post in Beerwah on Thursday, September 8 at 10.00am in Simpson Street. If you have a State Government problem or would just like to say hello to your State Member feel free to come down. Everyone is welcome.

Health Check What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs when we stop breathing in our sleep usually for 10 seconds or more. When we are awake our brain keeps our airways open. However, when sleeping, our throat muscles are disengaged and our airways start to narrow which can cause snoring. Bryce Perron Managing Director of CPAP Direct said he personally used to sleep for eight hours but he was still always tired. "That’s because quality sleep is more important than quantity. I learned after my diagnostic test that I stopped breathing 28 times per hour so it’s no wonder I felt so wrecked the next day. After my first night on CPAP, I lost the need for an afternoon nap at 2.00pm. To be honest, it’s changed my life!” At CPAP Direct they are committed to helping their patients get the most out of their treatment. For existing clients, all follow up consults, downloads, sleep reports emailed to your physician, in store mask fits, remote monitoring, machine checks and unlimited lifetime support is all part of the service. Please call CPAP Direct today on 1300 133 298 to find out how they can change your life for the better.

AUGUST 3 2016
Sunshine Coast residents are urged to take action to build and maintain healthy bones during Healthy Bones Action Week, from August 1 – 7. Poor bone health affects two in three Australians, yet osteoporosis is one of the least-discussed, under diagnosed and under-treated diseases in the country. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Dietitian Erin Coory says osteoporosis occurs when bones lose calcium and other minerals, making them fragile and more likely to fracture. “There are easy, everyday things we all can do to help prevent osteoporosis. Things like regular exercise, including strength training and a healthy diet with adequate calcium are some of the best ways to develop bone health,” Ms Coory said. Osteoporosis affects more than one in five women over the age of 65 years, compared with around one in 20 men. This number is expected to increase as our population grows older. “Diet is important for bone health, in particular ensuring you are consuming enough calcium. It is recommended to eat three to five high calcium foods each day, which can be a glass of milk or tub of yoghurt. “Calcium is also acquired from foods other than dairy, canned salmon or sardines, both contain calcium. Including dark, leafy vegetables like broccoli, silverbeet and bok choy can also increase your calcium intake,” Ms Coory said. These three simple steps can help build and maintain strong bones: 1. Increase daily serves of calcium rich food (it is recommended women over 50 years of age have four serves a day) 2. Go for a walk or commit to some form of regular, weight bearing exercise 3. Spend time outdoors to get more vitamin D from sun safe exposure. It is never too late to start looking after your bones and take steps to reduce the risk of fracture in the future. Living - Music Violin and piano duo recital
Violin virtuoso, Attilla Sautov, will join guest pianist from Germany, Oleg Poliansky, to present a world-class classical performance in the Maleny Uniting Church on Friday, August 12, at 7.00pm at the Mountain Top Community Church, and at Mount Mee on Sunday, August 7 at 2.00pm. Oleg Poliansky Attilla Sautov Sautov has resided in Australia for 10 years following a successful international solo career. This concert forms part of an extensive tour of over 40 venues in New South Wales and regional Queensland, which encompasses an area from Goulburn through to Cooktown and Mount Isa. Sautov has an enormous impact on his audiences, who are impressed not only with his incredible technical skill, but also his warm human connection and sense of humour. Often, before a performance he welcomes people at the door himself, and his recitals are interspersed with entertaining anecdotes of what happened during his career. This is a special treat for audiences in smaller communities, who do not often have the chance to attend such performances in the big cities. The pair will also be joined in a brief interlude, by violinist Anna Moores, to perform Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for Two Violins. These musicians are of the highest calibre, and bring unique personalities to the stage to ensure a most entertaining and enjoyable performance. Do not miss the opportunity to see this world-class concert on your doorstep. For further details visit www.attillasautov.com or call 0417 619 915. Tickets $10.00 - $30.00, under 12s free.
Music Today
with Dr Michael Whiticker
The Maleny Music Festival will be held at the scenic Maleny Showgrounds over the last weekend in August and will feature performers from as far away as W.A, Victoria and N.S.W as well as S.E. Queensland. Program times are Friday, August 26 from 5.00pm, Saturday, August 27 from 8.00am, and Sunday, August 28 from 8.00am to 4.30pm. It is a jam-packed weekend with more than three stages full of music, a session and a workshop tent, poetry and comedy as well as markets, circus, dancers and other roving entertainment, and you can camp for the weekend if you’d like some time out of the house! A new addition this year is a Saturday and Sunday Children’s Program with artists such as Linsey Pollak, Alphonse Squiggle, magician Sir Andum and a Sunday afternoon Bush Dance. Another feature will be the Saturday and Sunday morning conversations with artists Colin Peterson - former drummer with the Bee Gees (and child actor in the movie Smiley) and Louie Shelton a legendary U.S. session guitarist and performer who recorded on albums for The Monkees, Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Joe Cocker, Whitney Houston, and Lionel Richie, just to name a few. The roots of the Maleny Music Festival are in acoustic based music that crosses many genres. A quick look at the acts, www.malenymusicweekend.com and you’ll see everything from folk and blues to jazz and world music, bluegrass and country. And the Festival will have four different choirs performing over the three days as well as Vocal Workshops and Singing Sessions. Given the number of fantastic acts that apply for a spot at the festival, but simply can’t be fitted in, there will be a number of blackboard (open mic) sessions over the weekend: Friday from 5.00pm and Saturday from 8.30pm. Tip: Once a blackboard session starts it can quickly get booked out, so best chance to get a spot is to get in early in the day and get your name on the board for a 20-minute spot. Although directed at music lovers, the entertainment is varied, the food is fantastic, the tickets are very reasonably priced at $100.00 for the weekend (volunteers get in free) and parking is convenient, so I’d certainly recommend the weekend as a family event. Do try and get along to this great festival. We want it to remain an annual showcase for the musicians of our region, and it can only survive if it is supported. Your presence makes that happen!

The Lookout Cafe
While I am a very social person and really enjoy going to a café and catching up with a girlfriend, there is one café that I am happy to go by myself, lap up the sunshine and choose from the huge variety on the menu. Having our office at Glass House means that on occasions I can sneak out from behind my computer, grab my note book and pen and head up to the Lookout Café on the Glass House – Woodford Road. And I am not sure if it's because of the recent 50th Anniversary of Play School but I love walking into the café and plonking myself down in the ‘big rectangle window’ and just looking out to see what is behind it. Well on most days it is nothing short of spectacular, with a paddock of mango trees,
rolling hills and an amazing view of Crookneck and on some days you even see a mob of kangaroos lazing under the trees. On these glorious winter days we are having, the warmth as the sun shines through absolutely warms your body and your soul, and this is before I've even had a revitalising coffee! While the café is pretty cosy, the menu they provide is extensive, and what I love is that no matter what time of the day you arrive there is always plenty on offer, with breakfast served all day. And more recently the lunch menu has been expanded to include a couple of more gourmet items, including Tempura Barramundi and Lamb and Rosemary Filo.
However being a creature of habit, I like to read the whole mouth-watering menu and then pretty much order the same things that I love. If you haven’t tried the ‘sweet potato wedges’ served with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce it is a great filling snack to share or the ‘jacket potato with bacon and coleslaw’. The café is open seven days, from Monday to Friday 9.00am – 3.00pm and on Saturday and Sunday 9.00am – 4.00pm. You can make bookings during the week, but the weekend is first in best dressed. And don’t worry if the warm winter sun is a no show on the day you visit, there are also ‘nanna rugs’ and a big gas heater for those sitting outside to get that warm inner glow.

Out & About Festive celebration in Peachester Peachester had a little taste of the North Pole recently when the Christmas in July evening was organised by the Peachester Hall Committee. The night was a great success, and not only did everyone enjoy themselves, the funds raised will make a great contribution to the hall funds. The Peachester Hall Committee thanks everyone for their support, with special mention of Janelle who masterminded the decorations, and members who provided the food and volunteer work force. As well as the wonderful entertainment that was provided by the Woodford Singers who helped create a very festive mood.

In the Garden with Brownie
Veggie Notes - Asparagus
Green manures
If you haven’t rested your productive garden beds for a few years, you should think about allowing them to have a break and recuperate using a green manure. Green manures are easy to grow and mostly consist of legumes – although some include mustards for the purpose of naturally controlling nematodes. The green manure crops are better for the soil than just leaving it fallow as they perform some very important functions which mulching alone cannot. Not only do they add organic matter to the soil, but the green manure plants actively fix nitrogen in the soil, as well as drawing beneficial minerals from deeper in your soil profile. They break up compaction to improve water and air penetration into the soil, making for a better environment for micro-organisms. It’s not too late to put a cool season green manure cover crop in. You can choose from a variety of cool season green manures – such as fava beans, subclover, lupins, fenugreek and woolly vetch. To get the best results, it’s a good idea to mix a few types together as well as sowing with a grass crop such as oats. The oats will give you more green mulch content later on. You can buy green manure kits with all the seeds already mixed for you – and the good ones come provided with bacterial inoculants which improve their effectiveness. Check with a local produce store and they’ll be able to help. It’s as easy as, sow the seed, lightly dig in it, water and let grow. No need to fertilise. By about November, once the legumes are flowering and while they are still green and lush, slash them down. You can either just leave it all laying on the soil to compost down, or you can dig it in.

Native Wandering Jew
Commelina diffusa Next time you are out weeding your garden or creek bed, especially if it is a little moist and shady, keep an eye open for this little beauty, Native Wandering Jew (Commelina diffusa). It is a weak-stemmed creeping herb producing short upright branches and rooting at the joints (nodes) of the stem. Its delicate three leaved bright blue flowers with yellow stamens and slim elongated leaves make for an attractive ground creeper in normally shaded creek banks with deep leaf litter. In full sun, however, it grows prolifically forming a dense ground cover up to 30cm. As a ground cover it provides shelter for small lizards, frogs, and native bees are attracted to the flowers. One of its common names is ‘Scurvy Weed’ derived from the fact that early settlers supposedly ate it to prevent scurvy. Flowering occurs during spring, summer and especially during autumn. This native to Australia, tropical Asia and Polynesia, is not to be confused with the Hairy Wandering Jew (Commelina benghalensis) which has much broader leaves, up to 45mm wide, and has obvious brown hairs on the stem. When you see it next, don’t pull it out, enjoy its beauty.

Welcome to a new monthly feature, where I’ll focus on one seasonal vegetable and the ins and outs of how to best grow it in your backyard. We’ll start the ball rolling with asparagus … mainly as it’s a good time to plant new ones. Asparagus is part of the lily family and grows from an underground crown (cluster of fleshy roots). Buying them as crowns is the easiest way and you will be picking spears at least two years earlier than if you grow them from seed. Asparagus s a temperate plant, but the variety ‘Mary Washington’ seems to be one of the better ones suited to our subtropical climate. They are dioecious – that is they have separate male plants and female plants – and it’s said that the male plants produce the thicker stems, although this seems not to be a general rule and not the case with all plants. You can only tell them apart once they flower – which take a few years. Choose your planting spot well, as asparagus need full sun, good drainage and loose soil. Then prepare your bed well, as they are a long-term commitment, being productive for 15 years or more. If you want to grow them in the ground, dig and till the ground to 30cm and add lots of compost and some pelletised chook manure. Otherwise you can grow them in raised beds or in large containers (at least 50cm diameter container per plant). If you have a pH testing kit, check that the soil is pH neutral (pH 7). Adjust the pH if needs be using lime or dolomite (pH too low) or iron chelates (too high). Plant the crowns 10cm deep with some compost and chicken manure pellets. Spread the roots out like octopus’s legs, then cover with 5cm of loose soil. As the shoots grow, cover with another 5cm of soil to ground level. To let the crowns build their energy, resist the temptation to harvest any spears in the Spring after planting, and then only lightly harvest the second year. In the third year you’ll get 8 – 12 weeks of harvesting. In southern areas the crowns go dormant in Winter and the stems die back and you cut them off at ground level. In our climate here they tend not to do this, but it’s a good practice to cut them back at the start of Winter anyway. After cutting them back, top dress the area with manure and compost, then mulch around the area. In Spring, new shoots will appear. Let the first couple grow ... don’t be tempted to pick them. These will provide energy to the awakening plant. After that, you’ll be able to pick lovely fresh spears over Spring and Summer. At the start of Autumn, stop picking and let them grow out into full fronds. These then will put energy back into the roots ready for Winter. There are few pests or diseases that you’ll have to worry about, so they don’t need much looking after. But if you have lots of snails, take the usual precautions. Asparagus don’t like wet feet which can rot the crowns – that’s why it’s important to have good drainage. The red berries that grow on the fronds can be easily propagated – and in fact they’ll germinate through the garden bed without any encouragement. You can lift and separate the crowns in the Winter if you wish. This also gives you good opportunity to dig over the soil and add in compost, manure and organic matter.

From the churches Father Kevin Smith - Catholic Church Sometimes living a few hours away from the Capital City or a large town can mean that big events are more difficult to attend or they may even be missed altogether. Any sense of disappointment or deprivation however is more than compensated by the cooperation and friendliness of apparent strangers which is the daily experience of those who live in smaller or more isolated centres. The barriers that exist between people in the large anonymous population centres are broken down quickly, if they ever existed, in the smaller rural towns. Often it is in the experience of cooperation that occurs for very practical reasons in smaller towns that eventually becomes an example and the way forward for many others. This is certainly the case when it comes to a practical cooperation between members of different Churches or faith denominations.
Congregations of Christians in smaller centres often have a long history of praying, worshipping and working together, long before others feel the nudge of the ecumenical Spirit. Such is the case with the Catholic Church in Beerwah. Its existence and history has many chapters that include a close cooperation with the Anglican Church in the district. This year the Mary Mackillop Centre on Peachester Road Beerwah celebrates its 25th anniversary and over that period it has been a history of sharing facilities with their Anglican brothers and sisters. To celebrate this event and to mark the Feast of Mary Mackillop there will be an Ecumenical prayer service at the centre on Sunday, August 7 commencing at 11.00am to which all would be most welcome. This will be followed by a barbecue lunch. On that same weekend, there is a men’s breakfast organised by the Anglican Church on Saturday, August 6 and once again you are most welcome to come along. The best of our endeavours are those that result from shared effort and a spirit of cooperation. I look forward to being with you to celebrate the efforts of many people over many years in the Beerwah community.

Sport Howzatt for cricket in July Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester’s First Annual Social Cricket day ‘comeback’ was a raging success for our community. Fun was the aim and double fun was the result for a whole bunch of kids and adults from the community. Spectators had a great time on the beautiful school grounds and the food was great! The weather was a ‘glorious’ hot winter day. Heater from Brisbane Heat, made a popular appearance and all kids were kept entertained by half hourly Milo In2Cricket workshops, many thanks to Nick Roberts from Queensland Cricket. The winners of the big bash hit-off were Liam Gardener and Jai Shaw. Thanks to Hinterland Boxing Club for sponsoring this event. Thanks also to Peachester P&C for hosting this event and many generous donations of cooking and volunteer time from the school community.

Father and daughter Greg and Emma played for ‘Beauties and the Beasts’ Cricket is such a multigenerational game and we proved that on the weekend with mums, dads, daughters and sons all playing in the same teams. It has also been a major sport, for many families, in this district over the years. Strong communities create strong kids. We saw this on our children’s faces on the weekend. Everyone left wanting more cricket and more fun and more social get togethers. If you are interested in exploring the options of returning council owned land to a recreational facility for Peachester to hold more community days like this, then please come along to a community meeting in Peachester on August 28 at the Peachester State School. Please like Peachester Community Cricket on Facebook to stay updated or call Ashley Holznagel on 0479 137 780. This is a community event, not a school event. For more information about club cricket, checkout the website www.playcricket.com.au for signon dates coming soon in Glass House, Maleny and Landsborough.
Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Contributed by Craig Bales Master Last Home Game (over 35’s) - The Glasshouse Bribie Master’s will be looking to turn around a recent form slump when they take on the Jimboomba Redbacks on in Round 11 of the AFL Masters. Coach Damo has been thoroughly impressed by the recent form of Greggy Haslam when he has moved into the midfield and with the return of ‘Home Games’ to the side the team will be looking for some great run of the half back flank. Last time these two teams met Glasshouse / Bribie was able to get the chocolates by one goal so we should be in for a great game! The game will be played on Saturday, August 6 at 3.00pm at the Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Barbecue and bar facilities will be available and the club would like to welcome any interested spectators to come down and watch these olden day champions relive their glory days! The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Master’s attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbie’s to ex AFL players. Any interested players who are keen to have a kick or being involved with the team can contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig.Bales@ Quantum.com AUGUST 3 2016 |

San Taekwondo Fighters at Queensland Championships
Six members from San Taekwondo Beerwah and Maleny fought last weekend at the 2016 Queensland Championships. The team brought home four gold medals and four silver medals. Some members had tough matches. Joey Mortimer and Josh Collins were both uncontested in their divisions and had to move up a division, both taking on opponents a few years older. They each finished with silver medals. Emma Hall also won silver in her division. Gold medals and bragging rights of being the 2016 state champion went to Aaron Lerch, Reuben Tidy, Cameron Taylor and Siena Cameron. Siena also contested a higher division and finished with a silver to go with the gold medal. All members on the day showed excellent sportsmanship, encouraging and helping each other. Although Taekwondo is an individual sport, San has a strong emphasis on the importance of supporting your club and assisting your team mates. Emma, Joey, Cameron, Kasia, Aaron and Reuben will travel to Bendigo for the 2016 National Championships later this month. For most of the team this will be their first national competition and they are looking forward to the experience but the more senior members have their eye on claiming a national title and earning a spot on the Australian national team for the Oceania Championships in November at Fiji. Coach Norm Taylor said: “The team has great skill and we have some good prospects for National Champions.” For more information on how to get involved in taekwondo, or to support our team travelling to nationals phone 0437 571 540 or visit www.santkd.com. Full results: Emma Hall - Silver, Siena Cameron - Silver, Gold, Joey Mortimer - Silver, Josh Collins - Silver, Aaron Lerch - Gold, Reuben Tidy Gold and Cameron Taylor - Gold.
Super Strawberry Round 5
Good competition again this week, with seven entries in the traditional ‘heaviest’ category. Congratulations to new competitor Strawberry Fields who won the round with the biggest strawberry so far this year, weighing in at 154 grams (shown in the photograph). Thanks to Oaklands and Burrum Berries for providing strong competition. No entries this week in the ‘most unusual’ category... perhaps potential entrants are daunted by the winning entries over the last couple of weeks. The bar is fairly high, and it will take something outstanding to improve on the ‘parrot’, ‘Homer Simpson’ and even the ‘hand’ from earlier rounds. Round 6 is now open, so growers and pickers, keep up the good work! Bring entries in to the Coochin Creek Co-op, and remember that the next round closes at 4.00pm on Friday, August 5. Check in with Heather, our very helpful steward, who will photograph and record your entries. The Super Strawberry Competition is run each year leading up to the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring carnival, and the 2016 champions in each category will be announced at the sports day on Saturday, August 20.

Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Ian Hansen Monday’s Jackpot Pairs winners were the Kilcoy Pair of Lester and Harold with two wins +19. The Runners-up with +15 in the second game were the Mapleton Pair of Lyndon and Rob, and just to keep the visitors happy, the $200.00 Jackpot went to Brian and Ray also from Mapleton. The Raffle winners were Allan Cook, Warwick Moody and Harold Alford. Tuesday’s winners with two wins +22 were the Kapetanics, Sandra and John. The Jackpot of $110.00 wasn’t won, so will be around the $120.00 mark this week. Wednesday’s Twilight Challenge winning Teams were: Apps Kingdom, The Mavericks, Bom Diggety, The Handles, Ezi Riders and The Bridge Club. The individual winners were: Lead - Ashley Phipps, Second - Lorrie fawns and Skip - Tony Snel. The Touchers went to Rob Burton who also won the Money Board, Brett Gillis and Trevor Dunn. After 4 Rounds there are two undefeated Teams ;- Ezi Riders and The Handles both on 12 points closely followed by The Mavericks on 9 points after three wins. Because of the popularity of the Twilight challenge, some would-be players are missing out, so it has been decided to start Business Bowls on a Friday evening, commencing September 2. Already some Businesses have indicated they will have Teams, so others who may wish to participate may contact the Club or Our Chairman, Warwick Moody. Friday’s Scroungers Winners were: Tony Snel, Les Bennett, Ian Porter, Heather Snel and Relma Godfrey. The only lucky Sponsors’ Prize Winner present and able to collect was Doug McGufficke who won Monica’s Cafe Prize. The lucky Money Board winner was Margaret Ginns. The only Championship Match played was a Triples Match between Ian Porter, Curly Petersen and Ian Hansen against Joe Walters, Tony Snel and Graeme Glover. It was somewhat unusual in that after 11 ends the scores were 10 each but then Ian, Curly and Ian went on to win the next 10 ends and run out 25 to 10 winners. Not really a true indication of the game as 7 of those 10 ends were won by a single shot. The Club Championship Finals are scheduled to be played on August 6 and 13. This week there is Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, Twilight Challenge Wednesday and Scroungers Friday. Other up-coming events include visits from the Ulysses Motorcycle Club on August 7, the New Zealand Tour Group on August 17 and the Maleny High School Students on a Friday. Helpers are needed - contact Allan Cook.

Just for Laughs Being assertive
A husband had just finished reading a new book entitled ‘You can be THE man in your house’. He stormed out to his wife in the kitchen and announced "from now on I'm running this show, and my word will be law. “You'll prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm done eating it you'll serve me a scrumptious dessert. “After dinner you're going upstairs with me, and you're going to run me a relaxing bath. You'll wash my back, towel me dry and bring me my robe. Then, you'll massage my feet and hands. Then tomorrow, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?" The wife replied "the blooming undertaker would be my first guess!"
Catch of the day
The rain was pouring down. And there, standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick, with a piece of string dangling in the water. A passer-by stopped and asked, "what are you doing?" "Fishing," replied the old man. Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent says, "come in out of the rain and have a drink with me." In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskies, the gentleman cannot resist asking, "so how many have you caught today?" "You're the eighth," says the old man..... SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 There is a very important energy coming your way this week, with the double power of the Fire Signs of Mars and Sagittarius, and the New Moon in Leo. Look into your near future and make plans for travel, legal and academic pursuits. All these are favoured. You are now going over ground covered last March and putting ideas into action. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This week may be one of your most important ones, as the New Moon in Leo, falls into your joint finances sector. With Mars entering Sagittarius you are going to proceed to find your way to the top of the mountain. For some it may be physical, for others it could be ambitious with love. You are free now to explore the world. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Your married life is blessed this week, under the New Moon energy which falls into your personal and social life with your partner. The theme is therefore for receiving solid support from others and marks a new beginning in your personal life. You can make commitments with confidence and aim for bigger profits. PISCES February 20 – March 20 If you see anything mentioned in emails or magazines about how to purify your blood supply, then you might find you are interested in that information. The reason for this is that if you have been lacking in energy or confidence, this New Moon week is in the sector of your work and health zone. Good blood makes a better life!
ARIES March 21 – April 20 As you are reading this newspaper, the New Moon is in the dramatic sign of Leo. For Aries it is all about taking constructive action, and producing lasting results whether it be in the area of love, children, entertainment, your personal education or creativity. You should be enjoying yourself with loved ones in novel new ways. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 The New Moon, being in the sign of Leo, is in your family sector which can make your relationships loving, kind and generous. This means you might inspire a bold new decoration. As well as that, the planet Mars enters Sagittarius to open doors to a new financial investment. Your drive becomes more ambitious and enjoyable. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This should be an exciting week, with the planet Mars in Sagittarius now, which will enter into your relationship sector. You will see how other people’s minds and intentions work, and this can be very important for you to learn from another person’s example. There is a strong accent on short trips, errands and meetings. CANCER June 22 – July 22 With the Leo New Moon this week, there seems to be an urgency to handle difficult money matters. It will probably be the need for you to put down some figures about income and banking requirements. You will feel like splurging of course, as the Moon has an indulgent energy. Mars sets off active work agendas for you now.

Week beginning 03/08/2016 LEO July 23 – August 22 Consider yourself exceptionally lucky this week as the New Moon is in your sign. And that is a good birthday gift! Your wishes are powerful now, so write down at least three of them. Push your personal interests as far as you can and do use your charm as a potential for others seeing that you are worthy of responsibility and respect. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This week you need time alone for rest and self-exploration. You may feel tired or worn out from a hectic schedule over the last few weeks, take it easy if you can and avoid entanglements in any family difficulties. Mars enters Sagittarius giving you interesting thoughts on faraway places for possible travel. A fashion purchase. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This New Moon could mark the beginning of a new chapter in your social life. The fire energy of the New Moon in Leo accents the friendships and social functions that are so enjoyable for all Librans. This week may see a new level of maturity and responsibility and contact with those who are older or more established and reliable. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This week sets off a chain of events in your public and business life. Under the New Moon write down some bold wishes and seed them with your heartfelt intentions. With Mars entering Sagittarius as well, you will realise that you want to follow your blissful path. This means it is best not to squabble over your financial affairs.
