ell after seeing what seemed like hundreds of photos on Facebook last week of the first day back at school, it made me realise that while it is a very long time since I was at school, there is one thing that hasn’t really changed and that is the length of school uniforms. In the photos of my sister and I, taken on the first day of school each year, we started out with quite long and baggy school dresses with huge hems. As each year followed it seemed our dark grey dresses seemed to get a bit snugger fitting, a little lighter in colour, and definitely shorter! I am pretty sure my mum was really keen to get as much wear out of them as possible, and when I saw some of the little preppy girls heading up the road to school in their long dresses, it made me smile. Although I don’t think I saw any of them using a small brown or dark blue port (for our younger readers that was what we used before sports bags and brightly coloured back packs were available). Aaaah now I know that I am really getting old, when I have to explain what I am talking about. Regards,

Andrew Powell has been fighting for seven years to have traffic improvements made to the Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way intersection so news that the project is finally under construction, 12 months after he announced it, is a great achievement. “It was such a thrill for me to announce delivery of this project in December 2014 so to see it delayed this last 12 months has been very frustrating,” he said. “Convincing the government that we needed this set of lights was a team effort. I did my part but it wouldn’t have been so successful without the strong support campaign waged by so many individuals and businesses in the Glasshouse community. “I know most of our drivers exercise caution and care at this intersection, which has avoided any major traffic incidents, in the last few years. But we shouldn’t have the fear of putting our lives at
Start of work on new traffic lights at the entrance to Glass House gets the thumbs up from local member Andrew Powell risk when using this intersection so many times a day,” he said. “Traffic signals will not only make this intersection safer but it will also assist in managing traffic flow at peak times when we know queues can build back to the rail bridge. The work is due to take three to four months to complete, weather permitting. “I thank the community for their patience while waiting for the construction to start and urge you to take care over the coming months while this work is underway.”

THINKING OF
On Australia Day we started our day out at the Maleny Showgrounds where a Citizenship ceremony was held for 21 local residents.

The event was organised by the Maleny Apex Club and the ceremony was conducted by Mal Borough MP. TS Centaur - Navy Cadets completed the flag raising ceremony watched on by representatives of the 5th Light Horse Maleny Troops. The Maleny singers were on hand to perform the national anthem as part of the ceremony. It was interesting to chat to some of those who had decided to take part in the ceremony, including those on our front cover this week.

Nicola and Janet from Glenview Robert and Tami Freers, who now live at Bald Knob, are originally from the US. They’ve lived here for five years, so have only just met their requirements for becoming citizens. However Barry Bull from Mooloolah Valley has called Australia home for the last 61 years, seven months and six days. Barry clearly doesn’t believe in rushing things. Two members of the Hensby family from Glenview also became citizens. Mother in law and daughter in law, Janet and Nicola, were able to share this special occasion. Janet is originally from Cornwall in England and Nicola is Scottish, and is from a town west of Glasgow.

The whole Whiteman family can now call Australia home By Sonia Clark The Maleny Singers performing the National Anthem at the Citizenship Ceremony Andrew McKechnie of Maleny also officially made Australia his home while the rest of his family (who had previously taken the plunge and become Australian) where there with him to share in the day. Following the official part of the day, and in true Aussie spirit, they were congratulated by the crowd and welcomed into the community. This was followed by refreshments including (of course!) Anzac biscuits and lamingtons.
New Australian Citizen Andrew McKechnie of Maleny with his son Ben
The Whiteman family of Glenview can proudly call themselves Aussies after officially becoming Australian Citizens on Australia Day at Maleny. While each of the four family members, Kym, Rod, Kaleb and Mika were born in a different country to each other, after last week’s new citizen’s ceremony at the Maleny Showgrounds, the whole family can enjoy belonging to the same country. “After living in four different countries, we just loved the Australian lifestyle, weather and the awesome Australian spirit. We just wanted to settle here and fully immerse ourselves in this wonderful culture and lifestyle,” explained Kym. Kym and Rod originally met 13 years ago on a plane leaving Los Angeles on the way to the UK. They exchanged email addresses and stayed in touch – eventually moving back to LA together before moving to New Zealand where they got married. They came out to Australia around 10 years ago, living on the Southside of Brisbane before embracing the beauty of living on the Sunshine Coast when they moved up to Glenview four years ago. Becoming citizens represented a natural progression for the family, from originally obtaining visas, to gaining residency, to achieving full citizenship.
The Whiteman family of Glenview are now proud Aussies To become citizens, part of the process involved both Kym and Rod sitting the citizenship exams back in September. While a fair bit of study was involved, Kym is proud to say that her study paid off when she achieved 100% on her exam mark! “On the day we felt so included by the community and it was wonderful to see so many people originally from other nationalities and backgrounds welcomed. It was a nice reminder of how lucky we are to become Australians and not to take it for granted,” said Kym.

Late in 2015, the Beerwah Peachester RSL Club went into liquidation and as the Sub-branch was incorporated with the club, that had to be wound up, along with the club. That whole event was pretty heartbreaking for most of the ex-service members, especially when they looked back to the formation and the memory of the diggers that began the BeerwahPeachester Sub-branch of the RSL. Two of biggest hurdles were, ‘how can we reform a sub-branch’ and ‘how could we have the Cenotaph moved to give us a location for our commemorative ceremonies?’ Following the closure, an approach was made to councillor Baberowski and the liquidators, seeking permission to remove and then relocate the Cenotaph. There were several meetings with interested parties covering a range of issues including work place health and safety issues, design, placement and most importantly a time frame so that the Cenotaph would be ready for 2016 Anzac Day services. The outcome of all this negotiation was that the Cenotaph will be dismantled and transported to Turner Park where it will be enhanced and enlarged. The council have agreed to install a Garden of Remembrance, with seats for reflection, around the Cenotaph which will complement the memory of our fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and servicewomen who have lost their lives in all conflicts. The removal work commenced last Wednesday, January 27 with a band of willing volunteers, under the guidance of stonemason Wayne Osborne.
RSL Sub-branch members John Nisbett, Damian Petrie, John Rouhan, Steve Belbin and Josh Beverstock with stone mason Wayne Osborne (second from left) Over the period of time since the closure of the Club there have been a few core RSL members who are working to re-establish a Sub-branch in Beerwah. There was an inaugural meeting held to discuss a name change and re-establishment of a Subbranch as the old one unfortunately could not be used. As a result of the meeting, the name 'Beerwah & District Sub-branch of the RSL’ was approved by the members. It was with regret that Peachester was left out of the name, but the new name is more manageable, and covers a larger area. The Sub-branch will meet on the 4th Sunday of the month at 9.30am in the meeting room of the library. Existing members of the Beerwah Peachester Sub-branch of the RSL can pay their membership to the treasurer and their membership will continue with the renamed Sub-branch. There is an interim committee that is steering the way of the Sub-branch and a new committee will be voted on to carry the Sub-branch forward on February 28.

Fixed four-year terms to be voted on In December last year, Labor and the LNP combined to pass legislation through the State Parliament to extend the current three year parliamentary terms to fixed four year terms, but only with the approval of the Queensland people via a referendum. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said a fixed term would give Queenslanders the certainty of knowing when to expect an election and allow governments to plan their work around established election dates. “Fixed four year terms will allow governments to take a long-term view in developing and implementing policies and projects that enhance
the quality of government decision-making,” she said. There has been widespread speculation that the government may hold the referendum along with the Local Government elections, which are most likely to be held on March 19. As both Labor and the LNP support four year terms, it will be unlikely that official separate yes or no cases will be argued before the referendum. There have only ever been seven State-initiated referenda in Queensland, with the last in 1992 regarding daylight saving. Back in 1991, a similar referendum on four year terms was put to the people, but was defeated.
Let us know what you think. Are you in favour of the plan? Will giving politicians an extra year improve how they run the State? … Or will it mean we have less chance to change directions if they go off the rails?
Work at Mary Cairncross to begin mid-year The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Building Renewal project has moved to the next phase with council committing funds to enable construction to begin mid this year and is expected to be completed within 12 months. Regular visitors to the café will be pleased to know that a temporary café building will be located on site during construction. “Council’s building upgrade budget has been supported by $1 million from the Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund, as well as $250,000 from funds the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Management Committee have raised through gold coin donations,” said Cr McKay.
“The project includes a new Discovery Centre, cafe, gift shop, elevated viewing platform, meeting theatrette, conservation research area and offices and amenities for the hard-working volunteers and staff who run the information desk 365 days of the year.”

Australia Day Awards Suncoast Community Legal Service was honoured to be awarded Community Organisation of the Year at the 2016 Australia Day Awards hosted by Sunshine Coast Council. The service offers legal advice and referral appointments across the Coast including Morris House at Landsborough, and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. In the 2014/15 year, Suncoast Community Legal Service assisted approximately 3,000 marginalised or disadvantaged clients with legal advice and referral assistance, and this figure is expected to increase in the year ahead as demand continues to grow. The award also reflected the organisation’s long history of service (established 1984), its partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast, which enables Law students to experience the law in practice, with real clients, and their continuing program of community legal education seminars. In accepting the award on behalf of the organisation, co-ordinator Louise Jeffs also acknowledged the tremendous assistance the Service receives from its 130+ volunteers, comprising lawyers and support staff. To make an appointment with them you need to call 5443 7827 www.suncoastcommunitylegal.org There were 22 entrants in this category, a number of which were from Glasshouse Country and Maleny including Beerwah Pay it Forward. This is a Facebook based group with over 2000 members who are able to provide furniture, food and clothing for others when they are in need.

Master Plan adopted for Maleny sport and recreation sites Improved functionality, usage and capacity at key sport and recreation sites within the Maleny locality are just some of the benefits outlined in the Maleny Sport and Recreation Master Plan 2016-2031 adopted at council’s Ordinary Meeting. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the Master Plan covered Maleny Showgrounds, Witta Sportsground and a portion of the Maleny Community Precinct leased to the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club (MDSRC). “The study has explored the current and future needs of the Maleny Showgrounds and Witta Sportsground and what role the Maleny Community Precinct can play to service future gaps.” “It is important to note council has not made a commitment to fund all recommendations from the Maleny Sport and Recreation Master Plan. Future stages of development will be determined in accordance with council’s future Capital Works budgets, successful applications for external funding and contributions that can be made from clubs and groups who occupy and use these spaces.”
Some of the key recommendations of the Master Plan include: • Retention of soccer at the Maleny Showgrounds with capacity for a second full-sized field to accommodate growth in this sport; • A proposed new building site for the Maleny Bridge Club with options at the Maleny Community Precinct and Maleny Showgrounds; • Extension of community buildings including the Maleny Playhouse and Arts and Crafts facilities; • Provision for multi-use equestrian fields within the Maleny Community Precinct (portion leased to MDSRC); • Additional tennis court at the Witta Sportsground; • Improved parking and access across all sites; and • Support for the extension of walk/cycle pathways to connect Maleny Showgrounds to the Maleny Community Precinct. Visit council’s website to view the Maleny Sport and Recreation Master Plan 2016-2031.
Water testing for Glass House Unitywater is testing its water network in Glass House Mountains. The planned maintenance will involve their crews inspecting the valves in the water network during the day and testing water pressure at night. The water pressure testing will take place on one or more of the days between Tuesday, February 9, and Friday, February 12, in the early hours of the morning between midnight and 5.00am. Some residents in these areas can expect a temporary reduction in water pressure for 10 to 15 minutes during the pressure testing. Mr Babington from Unity Water assured residents that throughout this program Unitywater would continue to deliver a high quality, safe and reliable water supply to meet its customers’ household and business needs.
“Unitywater did not anticipate any water quality issues as a result of the testing, however when working with any underground assets, there can be unknown factors that may impact the work. “If residents experience discoloured water following this work they should turn on the tap nearest to the ground level and let it run for up to five minutes until water runs clear,” Mr Babington said. “Through this testing we are proactively looking at keeping bills as low as possible for our customers,” he said. This costs less than 25 cents and on average uses less than 125 litres of water. Residents can capture this water in a bucket and then reuse it in the garden. If water remains discoloured or you have any concerns about the program please contact Unitywater on 1300 086 489.

Beerwah’s new ladies fashion boutique Owner of the new Gracie Mayne Boutique, Sandra Jones is thrilled to be bringing her flair for ladies fashion to Beerwah. Now in their third week of trading, the feedback has been incredible, and the ladies of Beerwah and surrounding areas, have welcomed the fashionable store which is sure to become an in-demand destination … right in the centre of town. The boutique has just recently relocated from Forest Glen to its brand new location on Turner street – conveniently situated a few doors up from the Post Office. The beautifully displayed store has a feminine feel with vintage appeal. With splashes of funky colour and statement and quirky pieces, the store invites customers to browse the boutique which has beautiful vintage inspired dresses, floaty feminine fashion and stylish resort wear. The overall feel is of an upmarket boutique with surprisingly reasonable prices.
“Beerwah was always our first choice of location for the business,” explains Sandra. “It has such a vibrant atmosphere and you really feel like all the development and investment in the area contributes to the overall feeling that the area is really wonderfully up and coming.” Sandra has always loved fashion and she is excited about bringing her long held ambition to offer chic clothing and accessories for the mature yet fashion conscious woman to Beerwah. The boutique stocks a number of brands including Melbourne designer Mazi and Jendi, as well as the more youthful brands of Ava and Mia. Along with ladies clothing, the store offers gorgeous handbags, accessories and sandals – including the popular ‘Sandgroper’ range which all have a stylish yet unique twist. “We hope to offer beautiful clothes that compliment every figure. If your size is not on the rack we are always more than happy to try to source what you need directly from our suppliers.
We want our ladies to feel fabulous!” In response to customer demand, Sandra is now looking to source additional fuller figure clothing to compliment the range on offer. Whatever the occasion, you are sure to find just the right piece at Gracie Mayne Boutique.

Graduate challenges national stereotypes in doco
As tensions about nationality continue to simmer across Europe, a University of the Sunshine Coast Arts graduate living in Germany has produced a documentary that challenges common cultural stereotypes. Liv Baberowski’s 39 minute film, ‘Rate Mal! Can You Guess?’ features university students from 20 different nations answering questions about the culture, landscape, food and people of their home countries. The film challenges the viewer to guess the nationalities of the students, who come from countries as diverse as Mexico, Palestine, India and Slovakia, before they are revealed at the end of the film. Ms Baberowski, a 2013 USC graduate, is currently teaching English to professionals in the German city of Aachen and produced the film as a volunteer with Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen University’s student intercultural centre. She said ‘Can You Guess?’ encouraged viewers to understand the ‘other’ and to avoid pigeonholing people based on their nationality or race. “The aim of this video is to show people real faces and real stories instead of just labels,” said Ms Baberowski, who grew up in Beerwah and attended Maleny State High School. “Most of the people we interviewed were burning to throw out the stereotypes commonly held about their countries and share an insider's perspective on their way of life. “The take-away message for me was how much
less likely it is for conflicts to arise when people get to know the 'other’.” Ms Baberowski’s voluntary work with the German university follows her cross-cultural activities at USC, where she began a social connection initiative for international students that she called ‘G’Day Mate.’ Ms Baberowski said while she thrived on learning about the varied backgrounds of students in Germany, she had also enjoyed introducing them to some Australian traditions. “I delivered an 'Australia Country Evening', which hosted over 200 guests from all over the world,” she said. “With help from friends, I baked ANZAC cookies and pavlova, and prepared macadamia nuts, mango smoothie and vegemite on toast. “The only thing left at the end of the night was the vegemite on toast.” ‘Can You Guess?’ can be viewed on YouTube at https://youtu.be/KI_WO_cugb4.

Opportunity to learn from Japanese Sensei Masters
By Sonia Clark Local business owner Kaz Thomas-Roby has recently returned from an educational and inspirational visit to Japan where she undertook further study in her chosen profession of Japanese Acupuncture. Thirty six students from around the world were selected to attend the five day intensive training course in Osaka. The opportunity to learn from some of the best practitioners in the field saw the attendees studying for up to 12 hours a day under the guidance of four highly accomplished Sensei Masters. The students spent their time further developing their Japanese acupuncture skills including the use of moxa, needling and specialised body pressing skills. “It has been wonderful to gain further knowledge in this ancient practice and to witness the Japanese approach which is non-invasive and gentle directly from the masters,” explained Kaz. Kaz visited Japan in early December and found it an amazingly beautiful country with helpful and friendly people. Flying initially into Tokyo, Kaz was able to squeeze in a few days of sightseeing before her course commenced in Osaka. She headed to Kyoto to visit Kanshen one of the acupuncturists who had worked with Kaz at Soulqi in his home town, and even though it was incredibly cold, she was able to do a mountain stay and visit some of the beautiful temples. “I found the whole trip very inspirational and it opened my senses. It helped refine my awareness and skills for my own practice and there was a wonderful interchange of energy. It hasreally cemented my passion for what I am doing,” she said. Care packages appreciated Before Christmas the ladies of Beerwah RSL Women’s' Auxiliary collected 28 kilos of goods, magazines and treats and bundled up 14 care packages for our troops that were serving overseas. They sent parcels to Iraq, Afghanistan and Timor and some to the dog squad, wherever they are based. Margaret Rouhan said their efforts were greatly appreciated. “We have received many letters of thanks from the recipients who, above all else, appreciated the time and effort that was obviously put into their parcels. “For some, it was their first Christmas away from home, and therefore even more meaningful knowing someone appreciated their efforts and was thinking of them,” she said.

Sheree Tweedale your home is where my heart is
“We recently asked Sheree Tweedale from Palmwoods Real Estate to assess and sell our property in West Woombye. We had tried 2 other Real Estate agents, paid a lot of money, and nothing seemed to be happening. Sheree immediately loved our property, reassessed the marketing, and did everything she could to highlight our property and place it in view of those who would love it and buy it. I had never imagined any Real Estate agent would insert furniture into the property, make sure the lawns were mowed, and then hold the open houses, make a movie of our property, and actually sell it rather than wait around for a buyer. Because sell it she did! We cannot emphasise how much of a relief it was to have a true professional look after the listing and actual sale of our property. If you have any Real Estate for sale and desire an honest assessment and effort, we suggest you save yourself time and heartache and highly recommend Sheree to get the job done.” Rob Shackleford - Owner 430-436 Blackall Range Road, West Woombye

Environment Assistance for injured koalas
You might be surprised to know that Kenilworth’s Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) is helping injured koalas recover at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. When you read that statement it just doesn’t sound quite right, but the facility is home to over 400 trees in their eucalypt forest where their leaves are harvested and used to keep koalas nourished as they recover from injuries and accidents. Twice a year for the past three years, Australia Zoo’s leaf cutters have been visiting the STP to harvest fresh gum leaves to bring back to the Beerwah facility. These leaves contribute to the 500 – 1000 kilograms of leaves required by the Hospital every day. Molly the 18-month-old female koala was one of the recent beneficiaries of the Unitywater - sourced eucalyptus. The 2.2 kilogram joey was recently stuck on a hot roof in scorching summer sun for three days, unable to escape because of barking domestic dogs on the ground. Dehydrated, hungry and weak, she let out a 'yip' (koala joey's cry) which alerted the homeowners, who then took her to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital Director Dr Rosie Booth said they were able to give Molly the care she needed. “She is recovering well and will soon be released into a safe place in the wild,” she said.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Fronds and spores Have you ever felt instantly relaxed and at peace when wandering through rainforest? The lushness and coolness of this environment is partly due to the most common plant type in this environment, the fern. Looking fragile, ferns are actually tough survivors, being one of the most ancient groups of plants. First appearing 350 million years ago, and thus predating the dinosaurs, ferns dominated during the Carboniferous period. Ferns and fern allies belong in a division of the plant kingdom called Pteridophyta. There are more than 10,000 species of fern worldwide; Australia has 420 species and 80% of these are found in Queensland. Ferns have leaves, roots and stems like other plants but do not produce flowers, pollen, fruits or seeds. The leaves are called fronds and if you turn them over you often see rows of small coloured dots. These are called sori and contain thousands of spores. These spores travel by wind, water or animals to new locations where they form new fern colonies. In general, ferns prefer to live in shady spots under the canopy of trees. Ferns come in various forms including groundcovers, epiphytes and trees. Elkhorn, staghorns and bird’s nest ferns are common epiphytes. Australia has 15 species of tree fern, which belong to two families - Dicksonia and Cyathea. The King fern has the largest fronds of all ferns, reaching up to seven metres in length. Fossils of King ferns aged more than 300 million years ago have been found on most continents. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? You Said It People around here
During the Christmas-New Year period we had family visiting from Cairns. One of our visitors, Bill, put his wallet and phone on the roof of the car while loading for a trip to the beach. You’ve guessed it he drove off and forgot about them until a couple of hours later. Almost as soon as he realised they were gone, his partner received a phone call from a lady who had found the phone on the road, not far from our home in Mooloolah. The lady dialled his ICE number and Bill soon had his phone back. We searched for the wallet on the road near and beyond where the phone was found, and Bill enquired at shops in Mooloolah in case it had been handed in. No luck. We were very disappointed that one of the shop assistants told him he’d be unlikely to get it back ‘around here’. Later in the day RACQ phoned him, established that he had lost his wallet, then put through the caller who had found it, not far from where the phone was found. She had located his RACQ card with his member number, RACQ had his phone number, and so the connection was made. She had also put a message on Facebook using his identity on his driver’s licence. Who says people ‘around here’ in Mooloolah are ‘unlikely’ to be honest? Both these ladies went to considerable trouble and we are glad to be part of this community. Rob McFarlane Mooloolah Valley
Cycle Queensland Ride
The good news is that this year the annual Cycle Queensland Ride is coming to this area. The nine-day cycling adventure will start in Woodford on Saturday, September 3 and go to Maleny, Kenilworth, Gympie, Rainbow Beach, Maryborough and Burrum Heads before finishing in Hervey Bay on Sunday, September 11. The event is fully-supported, follows quiet country roads and is about having fun on and off your bike. Meals are provided, luggage is transported, and there is medical and mechanical support both on the route and at the campsites. And there is nightly entertainment. This year’s event is likely to attract about 1,000 cyclists of all ages. In last year’s CQ in the Darling Downs we had an 85-year-old man as well as an 18-month-old girl in a Croozer behind her dad. (I have yet to persuade my daughter to let me take my baby granddaughter but you never know!) Note it is a tour, not a race, so cyclists of any ability

Council levies
Having just received the council rates notice I have noticed that there are now five levies and one in particular I should refuse to pay. That is the transport levy. All rate payers in Glass House should refuse to pay. This is a rip off. We pay $20.00 a year for a service that is not provided. What do you think? Bob Malcolm Glass House Mountains
Leone Newell of Glass House Mountains recently emailed through an article she had found on the internet questioning manmade global warming. We have printed excerpts from the article, and if you are interested in finding out more and accessing the links to the historical newspaper articles please email reception@gcnews.com.au and we will send you the full electronic document.
The truth of the matter Not 2010, but 1828 at a blistering 53.9°C. Back before man-made climate change was frying Australia, when CO2 was around 300ppm, the continent savoured an ideal pre-industrial climate… right? We are told today’s climate has more records and more extremes than times gone by, but the few records we have from the early 1800’s are eyepopping. Things were not just hotter, but so wildly hot it burst thermometers. The earliest temperature records we have shows that Australia was a land of shocking heatwaves and droughts, except for when it was bitterly cold or raging in flood. In other words, nothing has changed, except possibly things might not be quite so hot now! Lance Pidgeon has been researching records from early explorers and from newspapers. What he’s uncovered is fascinating! It’s as if history is being erased!
For all that we hear about recent record-breaking climate extremes, records that are equally extreme, and sometimes even more so, are ignored. In January 1896 a savage blast ‘like a furnace’ stretched across Australia from east to west and lasted for weeks, the death toll reached 437 people in the eastern states. Mr Pidgeon provides numerous links to newspaper reports at the time that show the devastating effects of the extreme weather conditions. Mr Pidgeon said that what he found most interesting about this was the skill, dedication and length of meteorological data taken in the 1800's. When our climate is ‘the most important moral challenge’ why is it there is so little interest in our longest and oldest data? Who knew that one of the most meticulous and detailed temperature records in the world from the 1800's comes from Adelaide. The Great Australian Heatwave of January 2013 didn’t push the mercury above 50C at any weather station in Australia, yet it’s been 50C (122F) and hotter in many inland towns across Australia over the past century. You can’t blame those high records on man-made global warming!
Same old, same old?
I make reference to the story in the Community News, GC&MNews January 27 about dumping of unusable items at the Mooloolah Op Shop. Whilst I totally agree that this is a despicable act, and one that causes a cost to be borne by the community coffers which can be better used to assist those in need, the entire blame lies with the current Sunshine Coast Council. Since this council came to power we have seen an erosion of services, in particular the annual kerbside collection of large items of unusable effects. This was discontinued by this council without any reference to the ratepayers. Not surprising that as soon as Noosa Shire broke away and became an autonomous council, the first thing the new Noosa Council enacted was a reinstatement of the kerbside collection. Our council believe it should be handled by the recycling centres. But do they consider, the outrageous tipping fees and the inability of the aged, to get such large items to the tip? This would play havoc with a pensioner's budget. What ‘services’ do we receive here in the Hinterland? We haven't seen a street sweeper in Mooloolah in months, if not years. Mention this to

the local councillor and absolutely nothing is done. The mobile library has been repainted but the service has been cut back to one visit a week from two. And so it goes on. And I hear that our current councillor intends to put her hat in the ring again at the upcoming election, I just hope that we have some new blood prepared to tackle the Hinterland backwaters as well as the overall lack of services that we suffer from. I look forward to hearing from anyone who is prepared to stand for change.....they will have my vote. James Aitken Mooloolah Valley
Time to work with us, NBN
Below is a letter I have sent to Mr Bill Morrow, the Chief Executive Office of NBN regarding an upcoming information session they are hosting at Maleny. Just a friendly reminder that the Information Session in Maleny on February 22 is approaching fast. We hope that this function will not be cancelled like the one booked for December 2015? Why is such a large company unable to facilitate and manage an open meeting with the Maleny and Hinterlands people? It is now 17 months since the last open forum in Maleny for the Maleny and Hinterland residents. The good people of Maleny will be expecting an extended open forum at the February information session. Some of the burning information requests and questions will include: • Advice that the following NBN proposals have been cancelled – Palm Street, Maleny; Tower Lane, Beerwah; Old Peachester Road, Peachester; Mooloolah Road, Eudlo; Old Gympie Road, Glasshouse Mountains; and Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge. • Advice that no additional sites will be sought; • A map showing the proposed service area of ‘fibre to the node’ (FTTN) within the various townships (maybe this might be upgraded to ‘fibre to the cabinet’); • Advice that FTTN will be provided for the region instead of microwave towers; • A map showing where and when the satellite service is proposed for the Maleny and Hinterlands areas. Unless an open forum is provided, how can the NBN approach be considered to be open and transparent with the local communities or meeting the Council Planning Scheme? It appears that NBN is now chasing sites close to
existing high voltage power line so as to attempt to compromise the visual amenity requirements. The local people will not accept this as an acceptable situation. Please confirm that this power line chasing is now an NBN siting tactic? Please advise what speeds are being obtained by local Mapleton users and how the issues raised in the ABC programme are to be rectified? We look forward to an open forum at the February 22 Information Session. Jim Straker Towerless NBN for Maleny and Hinterlands Editor’s note Re: Mystery Noise, January 27 edition We were contacted this week by another reader in the area and their suggestion was that the noise comes from a nut tree sprayer, which she said they operate at strange times due to the wind.
Traffic lights for intersection
Congratulations to Minister for Main Roads and Road safety ‘Mark Bailey’ in regard to the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street at Glass House Mountains. Who else but a minister could make such a stupid mistake of holding the road works off during the holidays whilst traffic is light with holiday traffic and then commencing when it is busy with workers and school traffic trying to get through a crowded intersection, which at the best of times, is murder. However now we can have a lollipop man playing god with his lollipop. What was the Minister thinking? Stan Gillam Beerwah
The following is from a letter – that Beerwah resident Trevor Stevens sent to Cr Baberowski, whose response is following. ‘We had the contractors mow the footpath along Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah today (Thursday) between the lights and Mawhinney street. I attach photos to show you how disgusting the result is. I personally mow the complete front of my house and also a strip along the footpath for people to walk along, which is used regularly as a footpath by a local who relies on a wheelchair. Could you please advise how often this mowing is to happen? I had to go out and rake all the cut grass from my footpath and also the strip that I mow. Recently there was a write up in Glasshouse Country & Maleny News about how good it is that you have
organised the edges of Steve Irwin Way to be cleaned up and kept tidy. This does not seem like a very good way to start. The photos showing the timber fence is a neighbouring property next door and the long grass is a haven for vermin.
Thanks Trevor
I appreciate you letting me know about this. I need people to tell me when maintenance in our area doesn't meet the standards we expect, so I can do what I can, to ensure that it doesn't happen again. Having met Trevor on site and seen it myself, I agree that the lack of care in this case was clearly unacceptable. I've spoken to several senior staff and they've assured me that this site was not done by council or council contractors - it was done by state government contractors who were relying on Council maps to determine the extent of mowing boundaries and what they are responsible for (as they don't have their own mapping system finalised). In addition we have reported the issue to TMR and Trevor has also been advised of the complaints process for TMR. If any other resident notices mowing or maintenance that hasn't been done to a high enough standard, please contact me at Rick.Baberowski@sunshinecoast.gov.au. I take general maintenance very seriously and I think most of our staff and contractors have got the message that this is important to our community. However in this case we are dealing with a lack of commitment to acceptable standards from the state, which is why we are negotiating with them to progressively take on more of their roadside maintenance. Once we get this sorted out, I am confident that council can continue to deliver an uplift in maintenance standards for our area and region. 3 tips from Smartline for buying a house at auction Buying at auction is an adventure. It’s exciting, nerve-wracking and can end up with someone spending more than they intended. Whether you are buying for investment or simply looking for a new family home, it is imperative that you know what to look for in a property under the hammer. Here are three tips to make sure you get the best result when hunting for an auction. 1. Choose a house over a unit first, some hard numbers. According to a CoreLogic study in 2015, 20.4 per cent of houses were sold at auction whereas only 16.4 per cent of units were sold in the same manner. With that difference www.gcnews.com.au
in numbers, you will see a greater range of houses than units, meaning you have far more choice in selecting your new property. While units can be a little less dear than purchasing a house for investment, most buyers find a property investment loan to be integral to making the most of their properties. 2. Choose the right time to buy Property trade has phases. Real Estate View explains that properties fluctuate in price according to a specific pattern: an upturn/boom, a slump, then another upturn. It is obviously best to buy while prices are low and about to return to a high. It can be difficult to know when this
is, but with the help of a skilled real estate agent, it is perfectly possible to buy at just the right time. 3. Choose a property with history Get to know the history of the home before you invest. Even if you are planning on buying your first home, it is always best to think ahead for resale. When it comes to selling and moving on, a house with history can make a huge difference in value. Even homes that have no obvious history may have some tales under the floorboards. Check with your local records office or consider hiring a research firm: you may find some historical nuggets to help add interest and value to your property.

School News First day of school hard on parents The Tim Tam and Tissues event is now a time-honoured tradition at Glasshouse Christian College. The first day of Prep is meant to be all about the students, but everyone knows it is the parents who need a bit of TLC. After settling in their children, including three sets of twins, and having a photo together, many of the parents went straight to the Tim Tam and Tissues stand where they were free to express their emotions over a cup of coffee and a chocolate biscuit. Chappy Dan was on standby for anyone in serious need but the comfort of chocolate coupled with caffeine seemed to work its magic and tears quickly dried up. Three classes of Prep students were oblivious to their parents’ emotions and embraced all the fun and activity of school life very quickly. The day began with singing, dancing and play-doh and was followed by games on the interactive whiteboards before a tour of the College. Prep students visited the library, were shown the specialist classrooms where they would be learning music and French, had time to check out the huge playground, and toured the kitchen garden. They were very excited to learn how they were going to grow, cook and eat their own food.

Back to school The beginning of February means the school holidays are over and the school gates have reopened. Many parents these days like to get a photo of the first day of the school year. Here are a few that readers sent in to share. Normally when the Beerburrum Stongman, Tim O’Shea sends us in a photo, it is of him performing some amazing test of strength – however last week he sent in this lovely photo (right) of his softer side as a proud dad with his three children Mitch (4), who was starting Prep that day, Matty (6) who was going into Year 1 and Brooke (3) who will be going to Prep in 2018. The photo (right) of Harry Rook looks like he is excited to be heading off to big school for the first time at Beerburrum State School. With her cheesy grin it seems like Jassie Bright (left) looks pleased to be heading back to school for her first day of Year 3. Jassie Bright 20

Kylie and Erin Bickford with Robert Barry
Family history in the making By Lea Parkes When Erin Bickford walked through the gates of Beerwah State School last week for her first day of Prep, she was following in both her mum's and her grandfather’s footsteps, as the third generation of the ‘Barry Family’ to attend the school. Robert was a student there between 1957 – 1965 and when he started school he didn’t have to wear a uniform, he rode a horse to school and there was no requirement to wear any shoes. Last week when we caught up with the family, Robert shared these memories, along with a whole range of things that he did to get him out of the classroom. These included spending time going out to check on his horse that was kept in the school’s horse paddock. Robert said in those days they had little bottles of milk delivered each day. "So I would volunteer to pierce the bottle tops with a piece of wire before they were given out, I would also volunteer to do things like empting the waste paper baskets from each of the classrooms into one bigger bin," he said. One thing that Robert didn’t look back on so fondly is that they didn’t have tuckshop in those days. But the students could get meat pies on a Friday (which as a Catholic he wasn’t allowed) so he would only be able to have an apple pie. It got me wondering if this might have influenced Robert’s decision to go on to be a butcher and open his own business – Barry Family Butchers? Robert’s daughter Kylie, who works in the family butchery, attended Beerwah State School between 1988 and 1995, and remembers her uniform being a green and white check dress. She said that the school today is still pretty similar to when she attended it, without the horse paddock of course. Kylie was a member of the School Council and was the Sports Captain for her house Flinders, and after seeing the high energy ‘Erin’ running around the other day, I imagine it won’t be long till we see her sporting talents mentioned in stories in the paper.
Students welcomed
Harry Rook
A new school year has begun at Mooloolah State School last week. The school welcomed both new and past students and their families. There were happy smiling faces to be seen everywhere and the atmosphere was fantastic as the students headed to their first day of classes with enthusiasm. All the students from Prep to Year 6 wore their school uniforms with pride and arrived with all their books to start the new year. The P&C offered coffee and cake at the front of the school so parents and families could feel relaxed, chat to new and old friends and ask questions. The new Prep students were happy and excited to be starting school. There were some nervous faces among both the Prep students and parents that soon turned to happy smiles as the children settled into the Prep room. It was a fantastic day had by all, so welcome everyone to Mooloolah State Mum Erin drops off Molly for School for 2016. her first day of school www.gcnews.com.au

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Australia Day awards
Congratulations to all the nominees and recipients of this year’s Australia Day awards! The awards recognise groups and individuals for their commitment to our region and while there I had the pleasure of catching up with three nominees from our area - Judy Tomlinson from Celebrate Beerwah, Jennifer Broderick the musical director behind the Carols, Twilight Markets, and ANZAC events and Rosie Maynard from the Beerwah Pay It Forward group. Citizen of the Year award went to David Larkin for his work as Chaplain at Buderim Mountain State School, supporting families facing difficulties. The efforts of the other award nominees and recipients ranged from environmental preservation and cultural enrichment to promoting disabled sport and road safety improvements, and we can all be proud of everyone involved in this year’s awards.

Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra Bruce Hwy and Caloundra Road Interchange Upgrades Forum update
In December I held a public forum inviting the community to have their final say regarding the Bruce Highway and Caloundra Road Interchange Upgrades. This was the last opportunity for stakeholders to air any concerns regarding the proposed designs and hear from team members from the local Department of Main Roads. As a result, I tabled all written and verbal feedback to Main Roads, who recently confirmed both tenderers for the project are now in receipt of. The District Director of Main Roads advised: “The proponents will continue to work with Transport and Main Roads to develop an upgrade design that meets the required performance standards and where possible, community expectations.” I cannot stress enough the importance of reducing the impact to the Steve Irwin Way Forest and ensuring there is direct access to the Aussie World precinct. The final design is expected to be announced mid-year.
Mobile listening post
I will be holding a mobile listening post on Friday, March 4 at Pioneer Park, Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough from 9.30am - 10.30am. If you have a State Government issue, an idea for our local community or just want to say hi to your State Member please drop in. Everyone is welcome.
Rail Duplication and light rail key to reducing traffic congestion
Many people from the Hinterland travel to Caloundra for work, shopping and to visit. I’m sure many of you have noticed lately traffic congestion along Caloundra Road is a big issue for our local community and one that will only get worse with our growing population.. I understand Main Roads is working hard to combat this major long-term issue, with several ideas well underway. But we really have to ask ourselves what do we need to do to consider a reduction or cause to reduce this traffic congestion? We need to look at the bulk of the population is likely to use Caloundra Road from the south as opposed to coming from Nicklin Way. Whatever we do, this is a problem that will take a long time to resolve, involving interconnecting solutions. ‘Fixing’ Caloundra Road is only part of the solution. We will need the road through Caloundra South from Roys Road to be completed. We also need to duplicate the rail line between Beerburrum and Nambour and look at light rail between Maroochydore and Caloundra and then onto Landsborough. Share your thoughts at caloundra@parliament. qld.gov.au

I don’t know about you, but I’m a keen Googler. Whatever it might be, I’m happy to Google it and see where it takes me. One of my favourite areas of research follows the YouTube route, and not surprisingly, it is musicians who are special to me - often some of the seminal figures of 70s music who inspired me in my early days. Recently that list has included Jack Bruce, David Bowie, Steve Reich and only today - Mickey Hart. Mickey is one of those intrepid musical explorers who is best known for his drumming work with the Grateful Dead, but it is what he did after that that excited me. The Planet Drum project I thought was simply mind blowing as he brought together percussionists from totally different musical cultures for a series of musical explorations and one brilliant album in the 70s. More recently his Global Drum Project has seen similar outcomes. As a student ethnomusicologist in the mid-1980s I was in the middle of the debate that followed such musical explosions. Many academics at the time were concerned at what would happen to the great traditions that were swallowed up by popular western culture. It was a valid concern but little could be done to alter it. For eons we have seen how cultures engulf each other and some gain more and others less from the experience. It is what happens and it is what has always happened. Listening to the Global Drum Project I could see there was little in the way of a dominant musical culture in the sound the musicians were making. Each player had their instrument and musical area of expertise. What united them was the power of the music that they made and how it was shaped by each individual in the group. In the YouTube clip the musicians talk about their roots and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussein mentions his father whispering drum rhythms in his ear from the age of three, and, being more comfortable communicating with and responding to drum patterns than words. Hussein says, “we spoke in tabla language.” Hart summed it up for them and possibly all musicians when he said you could offer him a billion dollars a day and he’d still choose music over it. “I don’t really have a choice, I’m coded for this, it is part of my DNA.” Ponder that next time you take up your instrument, and do a bit of musical Googling yourself. It is fun!

Sick of pain and stiffness? with Beerwah Active Physio If pain and stiffness is slowing you down, you can improve your quality of life through exercise. Specifically designed exercise programs for all fitness and mobility levels can improve the symptoms of chronic conditions such as depression, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Our mental health is extremely important and any issues should not be ignored. Research shows that exercise can help lower symptoms of depression and reduce further depressive episodes. Osteoarthritis can affect people of all ages by causing debilitating pain through loss of cartilage between the joints which causes bone to rub on bone. Exercise can help reduce pain, increase muscle strength and movement of the joint. Osteoporosis is commonly diagnosed in post-menopausal women, but is also becoming an issue in younger men and women. The decline in bone mineral density causes the bones to become weak and brittle and increases the risk of fractures. An exercise program can help prevent further decline in bone loss, and if performed correctly can actually aid in increasing bone density. We have exercise classes for everyone; call Beerwah Active Physio for more information or to book in 5494 0060.

Great eats and treats to find locally!
Café Beerwah This edition, Lea and I decided to drop into Café Beerwah run by father and daughter team (Rob and Leah) for lunch. The first thing we noticed was how easy it was to drive in and get a park, hassle free. There was even a sign out front indicating that the cafe was motorbike friendly so you could park out front with your bike easily in sight. The second thing I noticed was the buy one (regular) coffee, get one free sign. The house coffee is the smooth blend of Piazza d’oro, however for those that like a stronger brew - the aptly named ‘Death Wish’ organic speciality blend is available and I’m happy to say it was made perfectly by Leah. The cafe is open from Tuesday to Sunday and serves an all day breakfast of all your favourites,
L oca l fa m ily ru n ca fé
(Tuesday to Friday 6.00am - 6.00pm, Saturday 7.00am - 6.00pm and Sunday 7.00am 2.00pm). This is served alongside a solid menu of well priced good tucker including five different burger choices starting at $7.50, pies from $4.00, and wraps and pancakes (both sweet and savoury). The cafe offers home style cooking that is hearty, comforting and reasonably priced. Along with making good coffee, one of Leah’s special talents is in cooking up a selection of mouth watering cakes and slices. Rob obviously likes to have a good yarn and it’s easy to see how customers become regulars. The cafe has an easy going vibe about it and offers well-made food in a comfortable space that you can relax and have a chat in.
Kids EAT FREE Every Tuesday
Lea enjoyed a steak burger with a side of chips $9.00, while I easily devoured the savoury pancakes ($15.00) with sundried tomatoes, feta, baby spinach, crispy cheese and sour cream – yum! Coming soon are ‘waffle dogs’ in either sweet or savoury options with a skinless sausage surrounded by waffle (yes – a waffle on a stick!). A special waffle press has been ordered from the U.S and should be in store shortly. Currently on Tuesdays, the cafe has ‘kids eat free’ for each purchase of an adult’s meal. Senior card discount is available everyday along with free WiFi and delivery to local businesses. www.cafebeerwah.com

The group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 12.30pm - 2.30pm. The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is located at Ryan Street (opposite the Post Office). For more information please contact the centre on 5438 7000.
Youth to play in Maleny Youth and age experienced by artists in various art forms is the inspiration for Youth, an Italian film production in the English language which opens this year’s Maleny Film Society’s regular fortnightly film triumphs on Saturday, February 6. Youthful Italian film director Paolo Sorrentino plays with intoxicating music in an exotic Swiss Alps setting, exploiting the professional-artist gyrations of a cast of giants: Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel and Jane Fonda. Caine plays a retired composer called Fred, called back to arms by the Queen; Keitel is a driven film director called Mike, labouring on his latest screenplay; and the ageless Fonda plays Mike’s favourite actress/muse. Plenty of recipes for tension in this a comedy drama with its own surprises. Doors open at Maleny Community Centre at 6.00pm for a catered dinner; screening at 7.15pm, leaving time for drinks from the bar or tea and coffee from a stand with homemade slices. Bookings possible by members online. Membership also available on-line. All welcome. Check the website: www.malenyfilmsociety.info
For the love of romance The Maleny Players will be presenting a Valentine’s Day revue, ‘Players in Love’, for all the romantics among you. The performance looks at romance from many angles, featuring comedy, music, poetry and dance, all on the theme of love. Three performances of the 13-skit production will be held at the Playhouse theatre on Saturday, February 13 at 7.00pm and Sunday, February 14 at 2.30pm and 7.00pm. Tickets to the M-rated show are $15.00, including a glass of bubbles. Book at the Maleny Visitor Centre in Maple Street, or at www.malenyplayers.org. The Playhouse, is located at the Maleny Showground on Stanley River Road, and is on the right as you enter the main entrance and has a fenced parking area in front of it. www.gcnews.com.au

In the Garden Get Up & Grow with Jade King
Chasing self-sustainability
I’ve entered this year with the great ambition of producing a plentiful supply of highly nutritious food for my family, which is pretty much the same as every other year. However, the point of difference this year is that I’m hoping to supply at least 90% of our entire required raw product! This will include the usual fruit, vegetables and eggs, as well as a full variety of meat. We have now bred our stock up enough to consider a consistent supply of beef, pork and lamb. We have also raised meat chickens; however I am not seeing this being a consistent supply at this point … definitely need a lot of chickens for a few meals.
Finally, we have our fish. However that requires catching them, and this we are yet to master. My produce gaps will be milk and enough fruit for my high fruit consuming kids, but they can be my goals for future years. Self-sufficiency is so close, yet so far! Another plan in the making that was inspired by
a trip to Thailand is to introduce a couple of new varieties of fruit trees. I have previously found out the hard way that if it is not a commonly grown plant in this area, it will more often than not result in failure. However, I have been so taken with some of the fruits in Thailand, that I am prepared to try, and if the trees fail to fruit, at least I should get a shade tree.
Firstly, I’m aiming to plant out a Tamarind tree, which I was blessed with as a gift before even going to Thailand and discovering its fruit! This tree is said to be a large evergreen tree that can reach 25 metres high and 12 metres wide … so not to be planted anywhere near powerlines! The tree fruits are beanlike, bulged pods that are 10-20cm long and 2cm in diameter. To me they taste like dates, however I have to say that those I tasted in Thailand were coated in sugar. Despite me discovering these in Thailand, they actually originate from Africa, but have been widely adopted across the tropics. Mangosteen is another fruit I was introduced to and found incredibly delicious. Once again, it’s tropical and said to be very fickle, but I’ll still take the gamble and try growing it. The fruit is round and purple on the outside and the white, juicy, flesh inside is just delicious. The tree is dense and very attractive too, so worth a
try all round. Finally, a quick update on births on the farm: over the Christmas break we have welcomed a new heifer calf and 30 piglets!!! There is never really a dull moment on a farm and it certainly doesn’t stop for holidays. If you wish to check it all out on Facebook, search Green Valley Agriculture. Until next time in Get Up and Grow!
Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others.

Weed file Groundsel Bush
Groundsel Bush is a Declared Pest Plant under State legislation and so must be controlled by landholders. As the weedy shrub will be coming into flower in March/April, is important that Groundsel Bush be controlled now. Interestingly, the plants are either male or female, with the male plants (yellowish flower buds) flowering before the females (fluffy white flowers). Each plant can produce thousands of seed which can float a long way in the wind. Control them now by pulling or digging, or by using an appropriate herbicide.

Dysfunctional families of the Bible I don’t know if you have read the story of King David’s family like this but when you read it - it is the perfect picture of dysfunctional. For a start, David had an affair and then abused his kingly power to murder one of his closest friends, to cover the affair up. Previously he had married another woman who risks her life so that David may flee with his. Since David never came back for her she married another man who loved her deeply. However when it suited David, and was to his political advantage, David abused his kingly powers and has her dragged back to remarry him- even though David didn’t love her, but another man did. Later on, David’s oldest son and heir to the throne, rapes another one of David’s daughters (by another wife). Yet David the supposed champion of justice and God’s love does nothing (maybe from guilt of his own affair and murder?). As king and a father, David should have done something. The daughter’s full brother, who is also David's son, is frustrated with his father’s lack of justice. So Absalom murders the heir to the throne (the eldest son) and then establishes a coup against his dad. Absalom nearly gets away with it. This is the great king, David - a man the bible

describes as a man after God’s own heart! As I reflect on David’s life, it teachers me three important lessons: Firstly, if someone like David can have God’s approval then how much more will God accept me because of what Jesus did on the cross? Secondly, it serves as a warning to me that my sins and actions have consequences. David’s failures brought about a terrible situation in his family. He was unable to act justly and fairly because David too had broken the law, and by dealing with his son’s evil, David would have had to do with his. Thirdly, I need someone better than David to rule. David’s reign was the height of Israel’s empire, but the best king they had, was on some level a moral failure. Jesus on the other hand rules where David failed. Jesus never failed, Jesus only ever did what was right. Jesus did everything out of love and compassion and a profound sense of Justice. Some of you may be living in a dysfunctional family, but take heart, because Jesus can take even the most dysfunctional family and make whole people again.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
For all your advertising needs please call Sarah on 5438 7445 or email: reception@gcnews.com.au
It is now time to dust off the footy boots and the lace up jumpers and get down to training which will be held on Thursday at 5.45pm at the Landsborough Sports complex (Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough). After a successful 2015 where the Team finished off with a couple of good wins, we are looking to build our numbers, for another great year of Footy and off field fun! The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Masters attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbie’s to ex AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and our oldest 60! The season is a 12 game fixture, played fortnightly. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment rather than premierships and flags. At the end of each season there is a national carnival which will be held on the Gold Coast, where players from across the state represent QLD against all the other states and territories. Any interested players can contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig. Bales@Quantum.com
Glassshouse & District Tennis
Contributed by Jill Kirchheiner Friday Night Tennis – It's that time of year again. The Friday competition will start on Friday, February 26 and finishes on June 10, for a 12 week competition, plus the finals week on June 17. It is open to all ages and abilities, for coached or non-coached players and beginners to advanced players. Matches are played at Glass house starting from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Matches are not played on the school holidays or public holidays. If you are interested in playing, or would like some information, please contact Katya on 0417 625 194. Come and have some fun and enjoy the competition on a Friday afternoon. www.gcnews.com.au

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Bean bombs During lunch at work, I ate three plates of beans. When I got home, my husband said, "darling I have a surprise for dinner tonight." He then blindfolded me and led me to the dinner table. I took a seat and just as he was about to remove my blindfold, the telephone rang. He made me promise not to touch the blindfold until he returned and went to answer the call. The pressure in my belly was becoming unbearable, so I seized the opportunity and let one go. It was not only loud, but it smelled like a fertiliser truck running over a skunk in front of a garbage dump! I fanned the air around me vigorously. Then I ripped off three more.
The stink was worse than cooked cabbage. Keeping my ears carefully tuned to the conversation in the other room, I went on releasing atomic bombs. The pleasure was indescribable! Eventually he hung up, which was the end of my freedom, so I quickly fanned the air a few more times and folded my hands back on my lap feeling very relieved and pleased with myself. He apologised for taking so long and asked me if I had peaked, and I assured him I had not. At this point, he removed the blindfold, and 12 dinner guests seated around the table, with their hands to their noses, chorused, "Happy Birthday!" Submitted by Ty, Glasshouse
Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 03/02/2016 AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You will be seen as a comfortable friendly leader, a role you find easy to take on. There are some exciting aspects to your ruling planet Uranus, which brings a new way of seeing, or experiencing your life. You may welcome in a life expanding opportunity. There is a sense of renewal and transformation around you. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Various planets bring to you emotional fuel to take effective action towards any goal that may interest you, such as travel, education, publishing, or far away conferences. There are some very interesting behind-the-scenes activities of which you are a part of, and business too, takes a turn for the better. ARIES March 21 – April 20 February brings to life friendships and social activities. This is the month to think about your hopes and dreams, altruistic causes and like-minded allies regarding business income. Look for new meet-ups so that you may be friendly and sociable. New people you meet start a network. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The emphasis this month is to outlay funds on specialised electrical equipment and perhaps upgrading computers. February will see you more in public life, working with authority figures and/or superiors in your profession. Hopefully your efforts might generate a promotion.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 It’s time for you to consider a plan, or goal, towards higher studies. February starts off with an enlightened outlook and it could also relate to matters pertaining to in-laws. It’s time to look after your paperwork, correspondence and exchanging email information. There will be new vistas in travel. CANCER June 22 – July 22 You will get the best success out of February by reorganising your present resources. As you are emotionally attached to security, it is suggested you be very conservative with superannuation funds converting them into cash bearing deposits only whilst the world is an unstable market. LEO July 23 – August 22 February will see a lot of things driving you onwards, particularly as your Sun sign is being affected by transiting Aquarius. This will put emphasis on teamwork and cooperation with your partner. Perhaps a partner will awaken with high expectations in health interests and self-improvement. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You have the dynamic support of Mars in Scorpio with Mercury and Venus in Capricorn. These are escorting you into the month with information and new ideas which may involve relationships. There is an amorous adventure due, building up to Valentine’s Day. A fairy tale finish for the month!
LIBRA September 23 – October 22 You will be motivated by a lot of things this month. Your ruling planet Venus will start the month in Capricorn alongside Mercury and Venus in the same sign. It will seem like an intense workout, like going to an up market gym with a personal trainer. Shrewd, confidential analysis, gains home comforts. SCORPIO October23 – November 22 February sees that Mars is transiting through your sign bringing an invigorating force, energising you to take action on what you want. It is especially able to transform old routines and habits into new ones, perhaps even transforming your physical appearance in the process. Intense desires. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The planet Saturn is in transit through your sign and because it is joined by Mercury and Venus, printing and writing, are high on your list of success. You spend a lot of time writing emails or using your mobile to communicate with those near and far. This is also a time that you should attend the library. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Because Mercury and Venus are in Capricorn as the month begins, you will feel a congenial beginning with friendly vibes reaching out to you. However, someone, expecting more, does need space away from you and that is necessary, otherwise you will be faced with restless and unreliable situations.
