Hi Everyone

R

ecently when I read a letter sent in to me about the noisy kookaburras it made me smile, someone after my own heart – trying to use humour to diffuse the tension that has been building up in our GCNews letter’s page for the past few weeks. I liked the line about maybe they (the writer) should ‘suck it up’ or ‘move to Caloundra’. However while the reader had thought that their ‘tongue in cheek’ letter might help things – from the number of responses this week – it seemed the humour was missed and the passion was released! Well if there was ever any doubt about how much people love living in our rural and semi rural areas, please be assured that there are quite a few very passionate locals out there that are keen to remind readers about the importance

Since taking over the paper nine years ago – I have worked hard to remove any of the personal attacks from the letters page and have asked people to focus on issues not people. While we all might not agree on what constitutes ‘an issue’ maybe what we need to do is have a regular spot for ‘what I love about being a Glasshouse Country local’ and for me – I love that people feel a pride in the township they live in, we don’t just have a home in a suburb but we live in a community.

Glass House reaches out to help the Philippines Members of the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre have rallied to support victims of the world's biggest-ever storm to make landfall, that hit the central Philippines last month. Maria Hall, comes from Tacloban City where super typhoon Haiyan hit the hardest with fivemetre waves flattening everything in their way, demolishing the city to rubble. Maria moved to the Glass House Mountains six years ago and has since become an active and well-known member of the local community. For a week after the typhoon hit her home city, Maria didn’t know if her family and friends were alive. Volunteers from the Glass House Neighbourhood Centre have organised goods to provide some assistance to Maria’s family and others in the Philippines. President of the Glass House Neighbourhood Centre, Colleen Clarke, said they are pleased they can provide some help. “We feel very proud and privileged to help people in this disaster. Many people in Tacloban haven’t had access to goods for their basic needs. We have sent a combination of new and used goods that are of most need to the people affected.

The Neighbourhood Centre sent sacks of rice, linen (donated by the Mooloolah Community Centre Op Shop), clothing, shoes, toiletries, mosquito nets and other items. The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and individuals donated $250.00 to pay for the new items and Well known Glass House postage. Mountains local Maria Hall “These donations will be going directly to help three families plus extra supplies will be shared amongst their networks,” said Colleen. Additional cash donations are being sent to the Bush Fire Appeal in New South Wales. If you are interested in volunteering, starting or joining a group, hiring the hall or seeking more information, please visit the Neighbourhood Centre at 4 Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains or call 5496 9734.

our wonderful community, a big thank you to all who donated. This allowed for our night auction involving our two very local auctioneers to take to the floor and strut their stuff amongst the crowded room and enthusiastic bidders. Some even involved a mystery phone bidder! Overall the event went so well the date has already been set for next year. Please keep Saturday, November 8 free and once again come along to what was a fantastic event. On a final note there will be plaque made to honour the event showing the amount raised each year which Club Glasshouse has agreed to permanently display. A big thank you must also go to the helpers that assisted on the day to make the event such a success.

The weather and venue was perfect, kicking off the event at 2.30pm with 64 mostly non bowlers enjoying a very fun filled afternoon of lawn bowls accompanied by drinks and music while playing that sometimes not so easy game of lawn bowls. Throughout the afternoon this was made even harder by the risk of being fined by the ‘fun police’ if you took the game too seriously. Again all fines being donated to the Cancer Council. Along with the 64 players came the 50 plus spectators who became drink runners to ensure those playing did not dehydrate! Throughout the game raffles were run, food was served and the huge auction planned for later that evening was promoted. There was even a break halfway to allow for further rehydration and a novelty event to be played resulting in more prizes being handed out. All the prizes and cash were donated by

Generous pensioner brings joy to disadvantaged children Beerwah local Thelma Hawkins is on a mission to make sure that no child wakes up on Christmas Day without a present. Every fortnight for the last 12 months she has spent some of her pension money buying gifts to donate to The Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal which delivers Christmas presents to families living in disadvantage. BOQ branches nationally are donation points for the Appeal, so you can imagine the surprise at the Beerwah branch when Thelma’s daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Bob Taylor, drove Thelma to the local branch with a four-wheel drive brimming with presents. Jo said her mum started out knitting dolls clothes for the Appeal but then decided she may as well buy some dolls to go with the clothes – and it just snowballed from there. “Mum went on to buy watches, hair brushes, towels, purses, toys – she just wanted to bring some joy to children at Christmas,” Jo said. “It gave her an interest, she enjoyed the knitting, deciding what presents to buy and building up the collection throughout the year. “A few years ago family friends of ours received Christmas presents through The Smith Family Toy and Book Appeal and it made a big difference to them, so it’s great to know your presents get delivered and make a real difference,” she said.

Tell Mal your (phone) problems By Greg Brown

BOQ Beerwah Owner-Manager Jeff Willis said he was overwhelmed with the community response. “Many Australian families are living in disadvantage and can’t afford to buy Christmas presents, so the unfortunate reality is that a number of children will wake up on Christmas Day without a present,” Jeff said. “But through the generosity of people like Thelma and other Beerwah residents, The Smith Family will be able to help bring the magic of Christmas to children who would otherwise go without.

FRESH COOKED & WHOLESALE

In last week’s GCNews, Mal Brough – Member for Fisher invited locals to register their interest in attending a meeting in the new year with Mr Paul Fletcher, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to discuss the specific problems we are experiencing with mobile phone coverage in the Glasshouse Country region. It is hoped that the meeting will show the Minister’s office the level of problems and frustration we all experience with the mobile phone coverage locally. Mal said he was happy with the response from the public in the three days following the article being published. “So far more than 30 people have registered,” he said. “The more support we can get, the more evidence we can gather, the more convincing our argument will be.” Meanwhile, Mal recently met with Telstra officials, including Consumer & Country Wide Area General Manager Kris Carver, for a full briefing on the status of Glasshouse Country reception issues. “It was a productive meeting,” Mr Brough said. “We’re looking forward to meeting with the Assistant Minister and in the meantime we’ll be providing everyone who has contacted the office with a list of things they can try, in the short to medium term, to improve their reception performance.” To register your interest in attending please phone the Fisher electorate office on 5444 4888 or email cameron.outridge@aph.gov.au

Rates, roads and RUBBISH It’s a well-worn phrase to describe what many people perceive as the core business of a local government. Of the three, it’s generally rubbish that seems to cause the most angst among ratepayers. According to Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski, it seems that some local residents still have reservations about how the Council’s landfill and waste disposal system is managed. In response, we spoke with Cr Baberowski and asked him some questions so he could clarify the situation and hopefully address any lingering misgivings residents may have. “Sunshine Coast Council’s vision is to become Australia’s most sustainable region, and how we manage our landfill plays a big part in achieving that goal,” said Cr Baberowski. “The landfills of today are not the big bad environmental blips of the past. “Our regional landfills operate to best practice standards and utilise technology that is environmentally sustainable and also has the ability to generate income.” The section below is a summary of what we asked him and how Cr Baberowski responded. What are the costs of providing waste management across the coast? Waste management remains one of the key tasks facing any local government. And it represents one of our largest on-going costs. The costs are split into two key components – kerbside collection and waste processing and disposal.

The collection component is the more expensive, costing in excess of $25 million per year. Processing and disposal is just under this figure, and all other operational costs are relatively minor. The way we pay for it mostly comes from annual rates, with a user-pays system applied to the optional green waste bin and disposal of waste at the tip facilities. Full cost price recovery is the aim with some subsidies currently applied from the rate income to the resource recovery operations. The gate fee on the Sunshine Coast Council Waste Management Facilities remains middle of the pack on pricing. Until the recent tip fee price increases council had charged 54% below the actual cost for large loads and 43% below the actual cost for medium loads. This is at odds with the user pays principle and is unsustainable – council can’t keep going in that direction over the long term, especially when new landfills will have to be built at a cost of up to $20 million. Why should users pay for the waste disposal service – why shouldn’t the whole cost be evenly shared by everybody? Moving to full-cost pricing is never going to be a popular solution, but it creates the shift necessary to make people think about the waste they produce and how they can avoid or reduce it.

www.gcnews.com.au

For example, if someone arrives at the tip with a trailer of construction waste, how that waste is managed makes a big difference to the amount paid. If the waste is all mixed in together, the cost for disposal is $145.00 per tonne. That same trailer load, if split into its recyclable components, steel, timber, concrete, etc, it will cost as little as $17.00 per tonne. With water and electricity, you pay for the amount you use and to ease the financial burden of that you minimise your usage. If you install solar, have water tanks and are careful with your usage, you simply wouldn’t expect to pay the same as a neighbour who uses 10 times more. Waste is no different. The responsibility rests with all of us to minimise our waste and thereby minimise our cost of disposal. Those who elect not to use the recycle facilities, not to separate their waste, and not to bother about reduction in the first place will then be charged appropriately at the gate.

How does the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre fit into the picture? The Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre is managed by Community Recycling Inc, a not-forprofit organisation who operate under a contract to Council. Contracts are let after a tendering process to find the most cost effective contractor for the site. The costs for disposing of waste at the site are set by council and not Community Recycling Inc. Community Recycling Inc provides training and employment for unemployed or disadvantaged residents. They also distribute funds from their recycle market to community groups from their earnings. Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre revenue is $511,000 while the total operating cost for the facility is $983,225. That means the centre is currently operating at a loss of $472,225 per annum and the operating costs are subsidised by larger disposal sites in the region. Disposal charges would need to almost double at Beerwah to break even.

New faces in familiar places

By Anne Snell

Keith Murray has enlisted the help of a talented, creative couple to help him manage his unique and beautiful Ecolodge at Glass House Mountains. Most locals will be familiar with the Ecolodge, on Barrs Road at the base of Mount Tibrogargan. It’s only 400 metres from the start of the National Parks trails and is a superb location from which to explore the area. Rick and Robyn have worked in tourism for over 30 years, beginning on Hayman Island in the 80’s and later spending four years living and working at a small Fijian resort that catered for scuba divers. There they met and worked with Jean-Michel Cousteau on his Project Ocean Search. “Cousteau would bring groups of 20-30 people to our resort for two week periods of nature based activities, including of course, scuba diving. It was a very busy time, but very rewarding,” said Rick. After returning from Fiji, Rick and Robyn worked in the marine tourism industry conducting excursions around the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. These islands are National Parks so they understand the principles and practices required to operate a business in a sensitive area. More recently, Rick and Robyn managed holiday accommodation in the Whitsundays. They believe

“The last Yoga group were up at 6.00am for a walk around Mount Tibrogargan, and this weekend we have a group booked in for an abseil experience at Mount Ngungun.” Keith opened the Ecolodge in 2004, he describes it as naturally authentic. His vision is to run the business in a sustainable manner, reducing its footprint through recycling, conserving and repairing. “We don’t sell rooms, we provide an experience,” he said. “Whether it’s the delight of strolling through the orchard, picking and tasting fruits not found in your supermarket, watching the coffee harvest, waking to the sound of birdsong, or inhaling the cool morning air, it’s an experience you will remember.” Keith says they measure their impact and try to reduce it, and if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. “We believe it’s essential to encourage local community connections by sourcing our services and products locally, and promoting our local area. In this way our community will be more sustainable and vibrant,” he says. Keith says his daughter’s return home from Beijing, reinforced the importance to him, of caring for the planet. She could no longer live there because she had to wear a mask every day just to breathe the air, and buying bottled water was not a choice, but a necessity. “This is the reality for some people,” he said. “We need to start taking action to take the load off the planet, and it starts with you.” Visit the website www.glasshouseecolodge.com for more details.

Ecolodge managers Robyn and Rick when delivering a product, be it a holiday rental apartment or a cup of coffee, it is important to exceed guest expectations. Robyn is also an artist. Her bold works on canvas are colourful and expressive. “My preferred style lies somewhere between colourist and abstract expressionism,” said Robyn. Her paintings hang in private collections in Australia, Fiji, Canada and America, and she has been commissioned to produce Public Art Works in a number of Queensland locations. Rick and Robyn are now enjoying the peace and quiet of the Glass House Mountains, “it’s such a relaxed and laid back place,” said Robyn. “We host regular Yoga Retreats throughout the year.” “These groups usually book out the entire Ecolodge for their Retreat, with their own chef and massage practitioners.

The Healthy Guru While looking after your health and wellbeing is a year round activity, as we move into summer the team at The Healthy Guru have definitely noticed the increase in the amount of customers coming in to talk about weight loss. Business owner Leanda said it wasnt surprising as summer is the season of Christmas parties. Ladies are keen to drop a dress size before putting on their party frocks or getting out in their swimmers at the beach or beside the pool. “One new product on the market that is proving popular at the moment for weight loss management is Garcinia Cambogia. This fruit extract contains HCA (Hydroxycitric Acid). “We carry Garcinia Cambogia in our range and would encourage anyone who is considering purchasing it, to come in and chat with our naturopath, nutritionist or kinesiologist so they can understand how the product works, possible side effects, and whether it will be the best choice for them. “Weight loss – like all health issues – is not

Business feature something for which there is a single magic pill that will give everyone the same guaranteed weight loss. What we want for our clients is for them to be able to achieve the greatest overall results and we can do this by working one-on-one with people to customise a package to suit their individual needs. “For example in the lead up to Christmas we are offering a 50% discount promotion on some of our Fusion products, a Digestive Tonic, Multi Vitamins and a Liver Tonic which, combined with the Fusion Weight Loss, might better meet their requirements. This formula contains the same active ingredient HCA as well as ingredients to assist the body in balancing out your blood sugar levels and in reducing you sugar cravings,” Leanda said. “An important part of what we are able to offer our clients in store is ‘education’ about their own bodies and the types of products available to help them, this understanding is critical in your longterm health management and is definitely not something you get when you purchase products

on line,” Leanda said. If you haven’t been into The Healthy Guru since they opened, pop in and have a look at what they offer. Craig and Leanda – or one of their enthusiastic team – will be happy to stop and talk.

Busy Needles happy to help the Salvos

Community News Christmas Break up

Contributed by Jenny Morris Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club On Sunday, November 24 we held our annual Christmas barbecue with the junior players and members. The weather didn’t dampen the fun had by all. It was a great afternoon for the club. The kids always enjoy throwing water bombs at our coach, Ray Semmens. Thanks to everyone who provided the lovely food for the barbecue. We also had our AGM before the fun and games and the Executive was re-elected with a change of Vice-President, Russell Doughty. President is Pete Geurts, Secretary, Nick Hughes and Treasurer, Candace Dell. A great year was had with our membership at 97 and the resurfacing of the courts earlier in the year. Our main project for 2014 is replacing the lights, if we are successful with our grant submissions. Thanks to the hard work of the Committee for the success our club is having both on and off the court. We would like to thank Dave, our groundsman for the hard work in keeping our grounds looking great. Our team in Division 2, the Mungrals would have

played their grand final on December 2 so we hope that they all played well and were victorious on the night. It rained on the first semi-final so our Division 4, the Vipers had to drop out as they came 4th in their division. Better luck next year. I am currently taking orders for club shirts for anyone who would like one. They are $30.00 and have to be paid before an order is placed. Please contact me on 0477 197 859 or place your on the order sheet at the club. On behalf of the Committee I would like to wish everyone a Happy and safe Xmas and hope to see you all in the new year.

Recently Jim Robertson from the Salvation Army visited the Busy Needles group in Maleny to accept their extensive donations to the Salvos for distribution to those in need over Christmas. Jim thanked the group for their help and let them know how much the items are appreciated. He just loves the look on the face of a child receiving a toy, or even a warm jumper for winter. The gifts included beautiful knitted toys, pretty coat-hangers, lovely warm jumpers, rugs, beanies, scarves, toiletries, and other miscellaneous items. Busy Needles was happy to help again as they have done for many years. Thank God for the Salvos! The Busy Needles group meets every 2nd Thursday from 8.45am – 11.00am in the Verandah Room at the back of the new Maleny Community Centre in Maple Street. Parking is available around the back in Bicentenary Lane. The ladies are now taking a well earned rest over Christmas and will regroup on January 30 with meetings every 2nd Thursday thereafter.

Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Contributed by Ian McCarron At our last games day the lucky door prize winner was Dorothy Forster and the raffle prize winner was George Bower. The birthdays for December are: Roy Hine, Anna Newland, June Bryer, Denise Woolley, Norma Stevenson, Joan Bowers and Bevin Raffin. In carpet bowls, Billy Lupton, Margaret Lamb and Ernesta De Clara beat Martin Bowers, John

Anthony and Neville Woolley 30 – 17. Many prizes were won in cards games. Our last function for the year will be our Christmas Luncheon on Tuesday, December the 10. Morning tea 9.00am - 9.30am, top entertainment, luncheon, and many raffle and lucky door prizes to be won. Names in to Jim on 5496 9836.

Small club, big family

Ngungun Triathlon Club recently saw seven families, with 12 adults and five children making their way to Hervey Bay to take part in The Hervey Bay 100 Triathlon. The events were over two days, on the Saturday the kids took part in an Aquathon, and Triathlon, and very early on the Sunday morning the adults of the club completed a 100 kilometre race, with a two kilometre swim, 80 kilometre ride, and a 18 kilometre run. The club is soon to celebrate its 1st birthday, and has seen a steady growth with new members, both young and old. The club has a very strong family base, with often the whole family participating in triathlon events. There is a chance before Christmas for the kid's to have a try at triathlon, with a Kid's Triathlon taking place at Beerwah Pool on December 14 at 7.00am. Go to the Ngungun Triathlon Facebook page for further details and club updates.

New art project to be launched

The Glasshouse Country Menshed Contributed by Bob McLean The Menshed has had a great year completing many projects. The most significant of these was the fabrication of a bench seat for the June Canavan Foundation as a memorial to June who was a great supporter of Wildlife Warriors before being killed in an aircraft accident in New Guinea. The seat now over looks ‘Africa’ at Australia Zoo. The men have completed another batch of mobile toys to be distributed for Christmas. They also continue to promote a number of men’s health programs. Raising funds to support the Glasshouse Country Prostate cancer support group with a sausage sizzle in September at Bunnings Morayfield. The support group gathers every two months at the Mary MacKillop Centre in Beerwah at 5.30pm hosting quality speakers on men’s health. This is a family affair where partners are encouraged to attend. The next gathering will be on Wednesday, December 11 with John the Pharmacist addressing health issues and prevention. The weekly gathering at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre provides the men with a considerable number of options to work with timber, repair petrol driven equipment, leather work - making belts with very interesting patterns

or learning to plait whips. The men enjoy their morning tea break, where a couple of resident story tellers will share a joke or two. The men will gather at 11.00am on December 11 at Ewen Maddock Dam for a Christmas lunch and fellowship. This will the final get together for 2013 and they will regather to share their exploits over Christmas and New Year on Wednesday, January 15 at 8.30am. School News Beerwah students help victims of typhoon Haiyan

When super typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Philippines, the staff and students of Glasshouse Country Christian College were just as devastated as the rest of the world. GCCC’s middle school students were so moved by the scale of the disaster and the plight of so many children and families, they wanted to raise funds to help. Although special fund raising days had already been held for causes such as asthma, cancer research and the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, a special Middle School free dress day was arranged for Thursday, November 28. Head of Middle School Mrs Jacqualina Vreeling said the Year 9 student leaders came to her with the idea. “Moale James did a lot of research on the best way to get funds to the Philippines and from what she learned we decided to donate the funds through Unicef,” said Mrs Vreeling. Although the students love any excuse for a free dress day, they were all very aware of what they were raising funds for. Happy faces quickly turned serious when they were asked how they felt about the disaster. Words like ‘devastated’, ‘horrified’ and ‘terrible’ were common responses. The middle school students were hoping to raise more than $300.00 to help with food and medicine for those affected by the typhoon. Elloise Grigor, Anneliese Matthews, Amelia Shirley, Amy Barker and Caitlin House love free dress day but even more hope that the day raises several hundred dollars for the victims of typhoon Haiyan

News from Parliament

During the last session of Parliament for 2013, new electoral reforms were introduced that will see voting revolutionised at the next state election. Attorney-General, Hon Jarrod Bleijie MP, said the system will be modernised and simplified but also better protected. Voting will enter the digital age to allow people with disabilities to submit their vote electronically and will also allow the blind and vision impaired to lodge their vote via an electronic assisted voting phone system. Another key change is that proof of identification will also be required which can include a current drivers licence, Australian passport, identification card as issued by the Government or a voter identification letter as issued by the ECQ. For further information visit the Department of Justice website – www.justice.qld.gov.au

Anzac Grants program announced

Funding has just been announced for eligible community groups who are interested in hosting events or projects to mark the centenary of the First World War. The Queensland ANZAC Centenary Grants Program will provide individual funding of up to $80,000 for local projects to commemorate the centenary of the First World War between 2014 - 2018. This really is one of the most significant anniversaries of modern times and we want to encourage every community to participate in some way. Applications for the first round of grants will close in March 2014 – if you would like more details, please call my office on 5435 2013 and a grants pack can be mailed to you or visit www.qld.gov.au/anzac100

School safety boost

I’m very pleased to let you all know that from next year our local students will be able to walk, ride and be dropped off more safely to Beerwah State School and Glasshouse Country Christian College, due to the State Government committing funding to install flashing lights in these zones. This is a major safety improvement to these zones for students, parents and passing motorists. In regard to Beerwah State School, some of you may remember last year residents petitioned the State Government to improve safety at the intersection of Old Gympie Road / Peachester Road, which I sponsored. I’m pleased the State Government has committed to installing flashing lights at these school zones and more than 300 across the state as part of a $10 million project over the next four years. These flashing lights will be up and running by July next year.

Major funding for Glasshouse Country Christian College

In another major win for a local school, Glasshouse Country Christian College has been allocated more than half-a-million dollars for major projects to be constructed at the school. This Prep to Year 12 school successfully received the subsidy under the Queensland Government’s State Capital Assistance Scheme and External Infrastructure Subsidy Scheme, aimed at significantly easing the costs associated with projects at eligible non-state schools. Glasshouse Country Christian College offers some great programs for students in the local area and I’m pleased they will now be able to expand their facilities. As part of the subsidies, $475,000 has been allocated for the construction of three primary general learning areas, two withdrawal rooms, three store rooms, a staff room, amenities, covered area, site works, furniture and equipment, while $115,000 has been allocated for the construction of a car park and set down area. I understand construction works will be underway mid next year. www.gcnews.com.au

As yet another school year draws to a close I would like to wish all students, teachers and Principals all the best for a relaxing and well deserved break over the Christmas and New Year period. I am happy to report that this year I am attending over 10 graduation and award presentations being held at schools throughout the Glass House electorate. I have already been to the Maleny High and Glasshouse Country Christian College celebrations and I wish the Year 12 graduating students in particular all the best for their future endeavours. Coming up next week, I will be attending award events at Palmwoods, Peachester, Eudlo and Wamuran State Schools. To those I can’t get to, please accept my thanks for your efforts this year and I hope to visit with the school community in 2014.

It's a park, not a paddock mate!

Why is grazing cattle in Queensland’s National Parks a bad idea? Firstly, National Parks are full of rare animals and plants. That's one of the main reasons they were created in the first place - to give our native wildlife a shot at survival. Many of the plans to increase the population sizes of these species clearly state that grazing is one of the principle threats to their survival. There are 20 listed rare species found in the five National Parks currently being grazed. After repeated inquiries to ascertain what the State Government is doing to protect these species from grazing, NPAQ has been informed that only one has had 25 hectares of its habitat fenced off in Moorrinya National Park, a Park that covers 30,607 hectares! It has been argued by some that grazing can assist in managing introduced grasses in National Parks. There is no net benefit to conservation from grazing exotic grasses, such as buffel grass, in National Parks. Cattle grazing inevitably leads to a reduction in the diversity of native plants. Furthermore, there is the very real risk that cattle actually introduce new weeds, and spread existing weeds. This is especially true around areas that are heavily grazed, such as watering points, where the level of disturbance and bare earth is perfect for the establishment and spread of weeds. And while grazing may reduce fuel loads in the short term, it's no guarantee that wildfires will be prevented as those in late 2012 in the Gulf demonstrated. Grazing simply does not promote the wide regeneration of native plants that fire does. At this point you might ask - well weren't these places grazing properties once? For decades up until the mid 1990's, many parts of Queensland were extensively cleared. A small number of properties with intact parcels of bush remained uncleared because of the wisdom and stewardship of past owners. In the interest of the landholder, Governments bought the whole property, not just the vegetated parts, and some of these areas became National Parks. In the case of the five National Parks being grazed, Parks and Wildlife Service Rangers, conservation groups and volunteer organisations have worked tirelessly to restore degraded areas, but all this effort is being lost. For the environmental legacy of generations of Queenslanders now and in the future, surely we can do better than turn our National Parks into paddocks?

Rooster complainant

Please be advised that I no longer have a rooster. I re-homed it on November 13 which is now three weeks ago. As it is not my rooster that is disturbing you, I would ask that you do not phone or contact me again regarding this matter. Lynda Glass House Mountains

Not impressed Seqwater!

Where do the kids and the not-so-fit amongst us ride now? Seqwater has closed off the walking track to bike riders at Ewen Maddock Dam. Now we either have to push our bikes up the steep, loose gravel track or ride along the footpath. To exclude bike riders, Seqwater have installed ugly steel barricades that are not in harmony with the environment. Where was the public consultation about this? I attended the Seqwater Recreational Review workshops three weeks ago and there was no mention of any track closure to any user groups. Another recreational asset has been lost to the public, just like access along the dam wall and to the kayak launching site. If skaters, bike riders, walkers and runners manage to share the coastal paths, surely we can manage to share this bush track? With so few areas for kids and families to ride bikes off-road and away from traffic in a beautiful environment, these barricades need to the removed. In the hope that Seqwater will actually listen to the people, voice your disapproval to recreationreview@seqwater.com.au or phone 1800 505 182. Name supplied Glenview

Thanks for your support

The Coastal Village Markets Twilight Market set for December 7 has unfortunately been cancelled. On behalf of all the volunteers at Coastal Village Markets, and The Cancer Council Queensland, we would like to sincerely thank the people of the Glasshouse region for their support in 2013. The team of volunteers are working hard behind the scenes for the markets in 2014; keep your eye out for market news and updates in 2014. The markets have been very proud to bring you an exceptional array of arts and craft, as well as showcase some very talented musicians in the region. A special thank you and acknowledgement to our supporters ATL Graphix, and Glasshouse Country News for their fantastic support to date. A special mention to all the kind businesses who have donated to our monthly raffle, and to Beerwah Sports Ground, the home of the markets for the last year. From all the team at Coastal Village Markets we wish you a very Merry Christmas, and prosperous New Year. Coastal Village Markets Team Beerwah

Finally some hope

Thank goodness! Our local member Mal Brough has at last given us poor mobile phone sufferers a little light at the end of the tunnel. I strongly urge all G.H.M. mobile phone / computer users with poor service to contact 5444 4888 or e-mail cameron.outridge@aph.gov.au to lodge a complaint. I'm typical. Mobile calls (in / out) can only be accomplished by sitting at my dining room table with the phone pressed tightly to my right ear. Any variance of this procedure will cause an interruption. Each morning my next door neighbour has to walk up his driveway, mobile in hand, to see if he has any overnight text messages. Yet 10 years ago my son successfully rang my mobile from Goondiwindi to wish me happy birthday and father's day. I was in Old Onslow, WA. Look it up and tell me I wasn't remote. In 1995 I watched (with some amazement, admittedly) while a mate rang his girlfriend in Melbourne. We were standing on top of Ayers Rock! So how come in 2013 we have such a crap mobile service in G.H.M? My mobile and land lines have always been with Telstra, ho hum. A Telstra ‘assistance’ operative told my wife that tall trees and a tin house roof could adversely effect reception. Well, we don't have any tall trees around here and our back yard doesn't have a tin roof over it. Telstra will have to think of something else. I look forward to Mal Brough's meeting and the eventual resumption of normal service. Roger Bonhomme Glass House Mountains

Re: Glasshouse Music Festival

The Festival was put on by Glasshouse Sports Club to enable people within the Glasshouse Country area and further afield to have some family entertainment. This Sports Club and fields were built mainly on volunteer labour by men and women of our community. I have been a volunteer for over 40 years like many others and we would not have this wonderful facility if it had not been for this community. Maybe sometime people need to drive by on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday when these fields are full of children playing a sport, what a great sight to see. There is a massive cost over a year to maintain these fields, as well as lighting expenses. The Sports Club did not make a lot of money with this fundraiser, and the ones who attended were mainly locals who expressed how well it was run and it did not go 'well past the time'. All the residents living nearby were advised of the event well in advance, also advertising was in the Glasshouse Country News for many weeks. The Liquor licensing and Police were extremely happy with the event. Surely once a year is not too much to ask the community to be tolerant with bands playing if it will help in raising funds to keep the Sports fields available to the community well into the future? Letter from November 27 edition Embracing the lifestyle

After reading the passionate cry for quiet in last week's issue regarding the problem rooster on Coonowrin Road, I feel inspired to voice my own concerns. Although I don't mind the crow of a rooster, I am sick and tired of the horrendous racket caused by kookaburras each morning at 4.00am. Although we chose to live in a semi rural area, I just cannot abide these outrageous creatures. Surely someone can do something about this early morning disturbance! Or perhaps I should just suck it up or move to Caloundra. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Editors note:

It would seem that quite a few people who read last week’s letter about kookaburras didn’t realise that it was written ‘Tongue in Cheek’ so we have printed it again for you to read with this in mind. However, it did prompt quite a few responses from readers with much the same message ... basically we have it pretty good living here. As the newspaper editor I understand and encourage people to have their say on things that are getting under their skin. However, I think that with quite a few weeks with so many negative contributions, the readers felt it was time to take a stand and say how about focusing on the bigger issues and the good in our towns. With only two more editions until Christmas, in the spirit of the festive season – how about we remind ourselves of why we choose to live in Glasshouse Country.

Re: Embracing the lifestyle

Amazed to read that someone is sick and tired of the horrendous racket caused by kookaburras. How could you demean these well loved birds? May be these laughing jackass’s are laughing at you! M.V.C, Mooloolah

Live in harmony

I have dwelt in this wonderful region for some 20 plus years, and through my small business made many friends of its welcoming and warm hearted people. Every day I thank the gods for my good fortune. The recent spate of letters to GCNews expressing dissatisfaction re: people walking dogs, the poultry industry, roosters, and now kookaburras, leaves me saddened. Early morning is a beautiful time of day, families walking man’s best friend, who is happier, they or the dogs? The poultry industry provides muchneeded employment, along with support to tradies and small businesses. The roosters and the kookas, well what would our brave serving men and women give to wake to that reveille, and how long does it last? Are the writers so selfish and self-centered they wish to destroy what the majority enjoy? They come of their own choosing, yet now clamor for change. I ask these sad, unhappy folk to take a long deep look inside themselves, appreciate how truly fortunate you really are, and live in harmony with your fellow man, roosters, and kookaburras. Give us a break

As newcomers to Glass House Mountains we are getting a giggle out of the rooster saga. But just not the rooster – 19 dogs woken up by a walker in Sugar Gum Drive – and this week kookaburras, give us a break (quote Paul Keating). Come on people lighten up, this part of the world is wonderful, get out of bed and enjoy. By the way the solution is daylight saving, and all will be solved. Cheers for festive season. Who’s championing your local chamber?

The last meeting of the chamber was held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. The chamber has adopted a new format inviting a guest speaker to address the business community at the start of the evening before moving into the formal business. This has proven to be an accepted model, reinforced by feedback from members who attended. The members and guests were addressed by Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck officer in charge of Beerwah Police. The purpose of having Bruce address the meeting was to allow the business operators to begin a discussion, thereby, improving communications with the police. The past three months have seen some minor incidents where the business operators in that community would have appreciated being advised of the event, so as they could have taken action to protect their property against a similar event on the following day. The chamber will work with the police to appoint a chamber member to be a liaison officer. A discussion was held on the benefits of CCTV in the public space to act as a deterrent to anti-social behavior. Cr Baberowski advised that council is working on a policy document to provide a standard for all Sunshine Coast communities. These systems may be able to be linked with the private and state government systems which now exist. The meeting was then addressed by Cindy Reader, Industry Liaison Officer from Beerwah High School. Cindy advised on the new structure to the school timetable which will allow students to undertake school based traineeships with local employers. Dianne Ford from SmartLearn Training & Development advised the meeting that her business has participated in the program for many years and has proven to be very beneficial to the business. We encourage more businesses to explore this option, to work with an enthusiastic young person who may become a perfect fulltime employee on leaving school. Give Cindy a call on 5436 5333 to explore your options. The Shop Local First Campaign is a community initiative which has been developed and managed by Beerwah local business Total Microsystems. The campaign is sponsored by the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce Inc. and GC News. We invite you to get on board, collect your bumper stickers from Total Microsystems in Beerwah (next door to Subway) or from participating businesses with a sticker on their window. Promote your community today so it can service you tomorrow.

At Stepping Out Podiatry we are always looking at ways to offer the highest standard of service and advice that our customers deserve. New technology is in high demand and we are pleased to advise that our patients can now benefit from a digital 3D Scanner when being fitted for new orthotics. The scanner takes a picture of the foot and converts this picture into a 3D model of the foot on the computer screen. The orthotic manufacturer can then visualise every patient’s unique foot structure and design a device to contour perfectly to your foot. The podiatrist will be able to show you your feet on the computer screen and design your orthotic straight away with a variety of super soft or more structured materials that the lab can use. A computerised foot analysis can more accurately reflect the dynamics of your foot function and assist you in getting the right orthotic for you. Podiatrists Jason and Kelli are both committed to ensuring all patients get the high level of expertise they require to treat their condition, along with the continued follow up and education that can be crucial to making these changes succeed. What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas is a special time for me, it’s being surrounded by those who love me and whom I love and care for…. It’s an opportunity to slow down, though often it feels like we speed up! This season means a variety of things - carols, lights, church; Santa Claus… for some it’s the holiday sales… Christmas is this and more, many of us remember Christmas as the day we waited all year for as a child. I loved opening the gifts and eating big meals with my family. When I was married, my husband and I agreed we would aim to make Christmas a family thing; not just a time to open presents. Christmas is a time of sharing and being with the ones you love. It's not about the getting, it's about the giving. As parents we have tried to pass this on to our children. Our children have created traditions in their families including inviting a family in need to share the Christmas meal and buying gifts to put under Christmas trees for those less fortunate. Christmas at our house means more when the whole family is there. Every year we get together with as many of the wider family and close relatives that can make it and have Christmas together. The memories wouldn't be the same without them.

We do this to experience the true meaning of Christmas, year after year. What does Christmas mean to you and your family? I hope it means spending time with the ones you love. It’s not about the presents under the tree; it's about being with your family. We know kids don't always understand, but one day they will and when they do, they will cherish this Christmas season; even more than they did as a child. They will understand about spending time with relatives they might not like, being family and family is a most important thing. Christmas is also the time to remember that very special family; Mary, Joseph and Jesus, celebrating this one tradition helps keep our family aware of why we come together, why life is precious, so that as we acknowledge this special time for all of us, we share our faith, the love we have and the love that God shares with us through his son Jesus Christ. Local Music Scene Music Today

What's in the Spotlight with Dr Micheal Whiticker

Micheal lives at Glass House Mountains and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner

Well what have we exhumed here? Many of you will know the program, presently on ABC TV, called Exhumed http://www.abc. net.au/tv/exhumed/. Its tag line is ‘the epic search for the best bands you've never heard of’ but some of the quality of music making is as good as anything being promoted on the popular air waves. Most of the bands seem to be predominantly made up of older people, and the recognition and acclaim they are earning by making music with each other, for each other and for their audiences, I am truly relishing. People are capable of creating great art no matter what their age, and we can easily forget that. Commercially, we are fixated with youth and the only older statesmen we see are those who have survived long enough to move beyond middle age. One thing the older generation have in abundance is experience, and there are surely many wonderful songs waiting to be written expressing the joys and heartbreaks that fill a long life. If you wish you had had such a chance

in your younger days, then dust off that old Fender Stratocaster, or uncover the Steinway under the house, and remember that a great song writer and performer isn’t necessarily one and the same person. Collaborate with others who might possess the skills you don’t have, and form a musical partnership. If your strength is words, find a pianist or guitarist and a singer and get together and jam. If song writing is something new to you, then enrol in a workshop or get some lessons - group sessions are a fun way to go. Find a mentor to help steer you on the path. It will take a couple of years to get to a good standard but think big with your team and plan writing a range of songs that expresses as much of the group’s creative talents as it can. And don’t stop at the musical plan! Consider the promotion of your project with videos and a web site. Now that would fulfill a lot of those dreams! Go forth with wild abandon and prosper!

Michael teaches music students from his home studio and runs the Glasshouse Muso’s Club. If you would like to find out more contact him on M: 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Glasshouse Muso’s The Musos finished off their November recognition of Australian Music with a session of super performers. Laurel and Bob Wilson (The Goodwills) graced our stage with some great reminders of the outstanding folk repertoire of the 70s and references to a Brisbane that was easy to traverse. They also gave us a very clever song called I believe, ‘Information Highway’ and one that involved the audience, ‘Paul Who?’, which was gleefully received by our group who have one of those Paul Who’s in their very midst! Ian Williams is always a treat and he included one of his own songs which referred to Australia’s miserable treatment of those who arrive on our shores by boat. As my own dear departed mother would have said in reference to such ‘There, but for the love of God, go I’, something that brings me down to earth whenever I see someone not quite as lucky as I! Ian also gave us the Kev Carmody / Paul Kelly classic ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’. Tommy Leonard included songs from some of our less well known, but unreasonably so, song

writers including Don Henderson, Al Ward and Fred Smith. Jon Brown and Tony Vobr performed Mental as Anything and Richard Clapton songs, and Rob Goodwin backed by Paul Fagan and Doug Pullen gave us Crowded House, Australian Crawl and the Little River Band. It’s great to see Rob getting up and performing with such confidence now - he has certainly come a long way. Doug and I accompanied by a plethora of small boxes, played The Waifs, The Whitlams and Ben Lee. A special guest of the Musos, and one who visits us far too little is Greg Bryant. Presently in the running for a major prize at the Australian Songwriters Association annual awards (with five songs in the finals) Greg J Bryant is the sort of singer who will stop babies crying! Well worth seeing or finding him online if he is unknown to you. We’re back this month and with a new theme for the second half of the month – Country. Rollin' Rollin' Rollin' Keep them doggies movin' Rawhide!

‘Tis the season to spread joy to kids in care By Lea Parkes

with Lea Parkes

For the first time, this year we have decided to be a depot for gifts for the Kids in Care Appeal which we will drop up to the ABC Studio’s at Maroochydore on December 13, in time for them to be collected.

We wish all our customers a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year

With 8,600 children and young people living away from home this festive season, it is really nice to be able to do something for these kids in particular. I can’t imagine what it must be like to not live with your own family and Christmas must be a really difficult time for kids in care, so this seems like such an easy thing to do to bring a smile to their faces and to remind them that people really do care about them. If you would like to participate, please note that the presents must be new, not gift wrapped and need to be suitable for a child aged 0 to 17 years. You can drop the gifts off at the Glasshouse Country News office at 16 Coonowrin Road or you can also drop them off at Andrew Powell’s office in Maple Street, Maleny. Any surplus toys will be distributed to other children who are known to Child Safety. For suitable gift ideas visit www. communities.qld.gov.au

Free buses make travel easy over the summer break From December 26 to January 5, all public buses and council cabs will be free across the region, thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Public Transport Levy and TransLink. By leaving the car at home this holiday season, you could save money in petrol, alleviate parking and traffic hassles, and discover that buses are a convenient and comfortable travel option. Transport strategy portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski said if you haven’t been on a bus for some time, now is the perfect time to try one. “The fleet on the Sunshine Coast is airconditioned, modern and comfortable and with the recent review in timetables, there is even better connectivity to trains and key locations around the Coast,” Cr Baberowski said. “Each year we continue to get really positive feedback from bus commuters who take advantage of the Free Holiday Buses program. This feedback, together with passenger data is reviewed annually, to assess the program’s viability. “I think the most encouraging result from last year’s survey showed that 59% of respondents said they would use public transport more in the future as a result of the Free Holiday Buses program. “While 70% of Sunshine Coast locals, who 26 |

| DECEMBER 4 2013

normally don’t use the buses, enjoyed getting around to visit places on the Coast they hadn’t been in a while—free of charge. “So why not do something great for your pocket and our environment and catch the bus to your favourite holiday spot instead of driving.” The free services include: TransLink’s Sunshine Coast Sunbus services (25 routes). Glasshouse Country Coaches services (Hinterland Connect and Maleny-Landsborough-Beerwah). Flexilink services (Boreen Point to Tewantin, Lake Macdonald to Cooroy, Conondale to Witta to Maleny, Kenilworth to Mapleton and Peachester to Beerwah). Council Cabs services. For specific route times and maps, pick up a timetable from your local council office, library or visitor information centre, or: for TransLink’s Sunbus timetables visit translink. com.au or phone 13 12 30 anytime. for Glasshouse Country Coaches, Flexilink and Council Cabs timetables visit the public transport pages on www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or phone 5475 7272. Normal booking procedures apply to Council Cabs and Flexilink services.

Last week I caught up with Cheryl from C&M Seafoods and got chatting about how she and Murray are enjoying running their new seafood business in Beerwah. One of the things she has really loved about returning to Beerwah after 10 years is reconnecting with old customers as well as meeting the many new locals who have moved to the area in that time. Cheryl said that their customers know that C&M Seafoods, supply high quality Australian and New Zealand stock that is either fresh or snap frozen on board (under strict guidelines). With Christmas just around the corner, Cheryl is encouraging locals to pop in and chat to them about their seafood requirements for the festive season. By ordering now you can have peace of mind that it is another job done to make sure your Christmas runs smoothly. If you are thinking Local King Prawns, Sand Crabs, or Moreton Bay Bugs or Oysters (Sydney Rock and Coffin Bay) make sure you give Cheryl or Murray a call on 5496 6667.

NEW FANTA SLUSHIE

Last weekend we were out and about and we finally had a chance to pop in and see Katrina at the Blessed Be Café which she opened on Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum mid way through October. We arrived at the end of the lunch rush, and ordered really wholesome looking beef pies, with a choice of absolutely amazing salads and coffees. While we sat back and enjoyed the coffee’s, Kat explained that the pies would take a little while as she won’t have a microwave and liked to warm them up ‘the traditional way’ in the oven (they were definitely worth the wait). Kat is a long-time local and as a chef she is loving being able to share her passion for using locally sourced, organic, 100% gluten free seasonal produce, as well as offering homemade preserves and jams. If this is the kind of food you love then you should definitely call when she is open Saturday to Monday, perfect for that breakfast, brunch or lunchtime catch-up with friends or family.

Things 2 Do Stories we tell

The Maleny Film Society will screen ‘Stories We Tell’ ‘in the Maleny Community Centre Maple Street on Saturday, December 7 from 7.15pm. A complex documentary about a daughter who sets out to find the truth about her lack of family resemblance and armed with her camera ends up disclosing a family secret. It is delightful in its respectful approach to all family members and in particular her mother, Diane, who passed away when Sarah Polley, the Director, was 11. Every question Sarah asks leads to another inquiry all of its own!

Learn more about being disaster prepared Glasshouse local Toni and her business partner Jessi from (Advance) Disaster Preparedness and Safety will be holding a free Disaster Preparedness community display at the Tanawha Hay Shed during their Christmas ‘Trading Day’ on Saturday, December 7. They would love to have a chat with you about how simple it can be to make an emergency plan and kit, for you, your family and your animals. They will also have giveaways and prizes on the day. Tanawha Hay Shed is located at 186 Glenmount Road, Tanawha, phone 5445 1000. To find out more about the ‘Trading Day’ where second hand gear will be for sale, check out their Facebook page.

Annual Christmas Fair

The Maleny Arts and Crafts Group is holding its Annual Christmas Fair from December 6 - 8. Hours are 9.00am - 4.00pm Friday and Saturday, and Sunday 9.00am - 2.30pm. The Fair is a wonderful opportunity to discover and enjoy the creative culture of the Maleny community and find unique, locally produced gifts for friends and family. Fine art, pottery and sculpture, woodcraft, quilting, fabric crafts, porcelain art and jewellery and much more will be amongst the many treasures. The raffle this year is a pair of beautiful silky oak Adirondack chairs, created by the woodwork group. A great prize that would grace any backyard. Do visit Maleny and enjoy the views, great coffee and food, and of course, the Christmas Fair.

Get up&Grow with Jade King

Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening

Merry Christmas and a Bountiful New Year!

It is amazing to think that Christmas is just around the corner and the year that is 2013, is coming to an end. Christmas and summer holidays are a great time of sharing and giving, and there is nothing better than arriving at a barbecue with a home grown salad from the patch, or popping a gift from the garden under the Christmas tree. There are so many gifts you can make that originate from your garden that could help save money, and also have loads of sentimental value. Here are some ideas for you to get stuck into. Fresh vegetable basket It is the season of abundance in the veggie patch and quite often you have a few hundred more cucumbers, zucchini, squash, choko etc than you can handle. Normally you would just pass them on, but with it being the end of year and a thousand ‘thank you’s’ to be said, why not make a gift basket of your harvest and attach a thank you card. Easy, cheap and effective! Preserves and conserves There is nothing quite like a selection of home-made jams, pickles and chutneys in a nice basket as a gift. With beetroot, tomatoes, beans, onion, corn, cucumber and strawberries being harvested in mass quantities now, it is great to make bottles of pickled beetroot, green tomato pickles, bread and

butter cucumber, sweet tomato chutney, corn relish and strawberry jam. Herb baskets Collect a few herbs that can be divided easily, like chives and mint, and pot them up in a nice container or hessian lined basket. Add a little personalised label and some ribbons and you have a gorgeous gift to give. Pressed flower cards Collect some flowers from around the garden and press them flat in an old phone book. To quicken up the drying process, put the book of flattened flowers in your car for a week and it works like an oven. This is a trick I accidently discovered in the past! Once the flowers are dry, stick them to your card and laminate it. These are absolutely beautiful and make great gift tags or book marks too. Garden DIY kit This is a great idea for both young and old. Grab a pot and get a sealable bag with the pot’s required amount of potting mix in it. Choose some flower or vegetable seeds and place these and the bag of potting mix into the pot and wrap it up. Mini gardens for kids Want a gift for the kids that encourages green thumbs and kindles their imagination? Package up a dinosaur’s domain or fairy garden kit! All you need is a pot, potting mix, small plants and some quirky toy dinosaurs, fairies, cars or animals and your kit is complete. The kids get to build and play in their own magical mini world. These are just a few ideas for gifts and fun you can create from your garden. However, if time becomes an issue, as it so often does, or you wish to get a fellow gardener a gift, don’t go past the Coochin Co-op. It has all the wonderful things a gardener could desire, from seeds to some cute and quirky garden ornaments. I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas. Until next time in Get Up and Grow…

Proudly sponsored by Coochin Creek Co-op for all your gardening needs 39 Simpson St, Beerwah Ph: 5494 6219 Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others.

Aid your repayment efforts by considering home loan refinancing There are few things in life that you will commit to that are as big as a home loan. Taking on such a financial obligation can seem daunting at first, and it can often lead you to feel weighed down by debt for years to come. And as your life circumstances begin to change, so will your home loan needs. Perhaps you find yourself struggling with the amount of your home loan repayments. Or, on the flip side, you may find yourself in a better financial situation - resulting in more www.gcnews.com.au

money to be put towards anything you want. It would be a good idea to keep an eye on your home loan health throughout your life, because home loan refinancing could put you back in control of your investments and keep you in the strongest financial position possible. For example, if you’re finding it difficult to make your weekly repayments, it could be worth speaking to a financial expert about the options available to you. For example, it could be

possible to reduce the required repayment amount, giving you more breathing room. However, keep in mind that undertaking this route will make your home loan last slightly longer, which could result in an overall higher repayment amount when you factor in interest being charged on your remaining balance. The same applies to increasing your repayment amounts. This can help you to get debt free faster, while cutting into your overall balance in a big way and

aiding your mortgage efforts. Speaking with an expert is a great way to ensure you make the right refinancing decisions and find yourself in great financial health. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

In the backyard Energex shines light on Christmas decoration dangers

The first week of December is traditionally when people start setting up Christmas lights and Energex is urging people to put safety first when doing so. Dangers such as electrocution and falls are just two hazards Energex Group Manager for Safety Darryl Bell said should be at the forefront of people’s minds when getting their home ready for the festive season. “What people should remember when setting up Christmas lights and other powered decorations is they are working with electricity and – as we know – it can kill if the appliance is faulty or care isn’t taken,” Mr Bell said. “With this in mind we’re urging the community to check their decorations for faults or frayed cords before plugging them in and if they have any concerns have them checked by a qualified electrician or thrown away. “If buying new lights or electronic decorations, ensure they meet Australian safety standards which should be displayed on the packaging. Quality lights are only marginally more expensive but can help prevent electrical hazards and other issues such as house fires. “We’re also asking people to ensure if they’re using powered decorations outside that they are rated for outdoor use because if indoor lights get wet they can cause serious electrical issues. “And when setting up multiple strands of lights in one area, be sure to use a quality power board with an emergency cut off switch and ensure you don’t overload the power point.” Mr Bell also warned people who are setting up lights at height they should set the ladder on a stable flat surface and have someone on hand to hold it for them. “You may think you’re only up the ladder for a few minutes but the reality is it only takes a split second for it to move or for you to slip and suffer a serious fall,” Mr Bell said. “Additionally, if you’re setting up lights on the outside of your home, particularly along the roof gutter, be sure to keep well away from overhead powerlines that supply the house. “Christmas is about spending quality time with loved ones and there’s no better way to start the festive season by ensuring you take a few safety precautions beforehand.”

Storms and solar panels

When storms hit and our property sustains some damage, mostly we know what to do to make it safe. We can tarp over a hole on the roof; we can board up broken windows; we can turn off the water mains if there is a broken pipe. But with many of us now having solar panels installed, what do you do if they are damaged in a hail storm or by falling branches? We asked Ian Hall from 1300 4 SOLAR at Glass House Mountains what people should know about storm damaged solar panels. Ian, who has 29 years’ experience in the industry, explained that the glass on solar panels is made from toughened glass. “It means that if the panel is damaged, it will be very obvious as the whole panel will crack into a million cracks – rather than just one. “Good panels are designed to withstand the force of a hail stone of around 25mm in diameter travelling at 80km per hour. Beyond that level of force and the panel may sustain damage,” he said. Ian suggests that when you’ve had solar installed, check with your home insurer to see if you need to change your policy. “Generally there is no noticeable change or increase with home insurance policies, but it’s best to check with them,” he said. After a storm, if you suspect that something has hit and possibly damaged your solar panels, Ian suggests that you don’t climb on the roof to take a look, just in case there’s been a short. “Check them by standing back and looking, rather than climbing up on the roof – which isn’t a good thing to do during storms anyway. “Damaged panels will still work producing electricity. The cracked glass may let moisture in and water and electricity results in the panel shorting out. “Most good inverters will indicate there is a fault in the system if a panel shorts out. “If there is a warning message or signal you should call the company who installed the system for their advice,” he said. But with many of them having gone out of business, Ian suggests you next call a local solar qualified electrician or solar retailer (such as 1300 4 SOLAR). “Talk with them and follow the recommended shut down procedures. This has a particular sequence of steps, which is generally the reverse of what it is to turn it back on again.” Ian then suggests you contact your home insurer and work out with them what process you will follow to have the repairs undertaken. “By purchasing your system through a local solar qualified electrician, you can be assured that there is someone locally available to help in the unlikely eventuality of something going wrong,” said Ian.

Plant of the month

Brisbane Lily

(Proiphys cunninghamii)

Believe it or not this lovely lily is a native, once found in moist forests, along stream banks or in rainforest. Brisbane lily grows to about 60 cms and has dark green, rounded, almost heart shaped leaves. The clusters of white scented flowers develop in spring and stay on the plant for some time. Brisbane lily is seldom seen in commercial nurseries and yet it is well suited to growing in damp shaded areas or around ponds. Even when not flowering, the dark glossy leaves of the plant make this an attractive species. It makes an excellent indoor plant, particularly when flowering. As the flowers die back, small fruits appear and when mature, these can be planted to grow further plants. Brisbane lily has an underground bulb and can be divided to produce new plants.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Kelly

We are definitely winding down our golfing calendar with just one week to go before our Annual Christmas Party. Despite the heat on Thursday, we had 72 girls come out to play a 4 Ball Best Ball Stableford for trophies generously donated by lady members Cathy Stone and Debs Rutherford. The winners, with a monster total of 47 points, were Barb Saunders and Brenda Jones. Runners up on 43 points were Lyn Nichols and Karen Kemp who scored a total of 43 points. Nearest to the pins were won

by Rose Ballard and Mavis Brimelow on the 2nd Andrea Campbell and Cathy Stone on number 5 and Kathy Moffatt and Lorraine Dillon took out number 16. NTP on the 18th was held in two divisions, with Karen Kemp and Lyn Nichols winning the Division 1 ball, and Marie Norton and Ruth Machen scoring Division 2. The ball rundown went to 40 points, and Hope Hannah scored the Birdie Box on the 4th. The girls are all geared up for a few laughs next Thursday, so let’s hope Huey is kind to us. Until then, stay safe and good golfing.

Working Bee

The Landsborough Tennis club is having a ‘working bee’ on Sunday, December 8 from 8.00am – 12.00noon and would like to invite any interested members and nonmembers who can spare a few hours to come along and help out. Some of the jobs include digging, cleaning, tree lopping, painting and upgrading security of clubhouses. We greatly appreciate anyone who can volunteer their time. For further information please contact Greg Daniels on 5494 1551 or Kerry Roach on 0422 026 612. Morning tea will be provided.

Week beginning 04/12/13

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Reassess a decision you were trying to make last July, and adapt your plans towards completion next year, around May. Ditch old behaviors under your New Moon sign, and welcome in new ways to love, play, and be creative. When Mercury enters your sign this week you have illusionary dreams. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This New Moon rings a subtle spiritual bell beckoning you into some private time this week and that is good for your soulful meditation. It’s a week for enlightened awakening, perhaps the beginning of your spiritual quest to understand your inner workings and express your true nature creatively. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The beginning of the week has a favourable New Moon bringing big ideas and expanding your network. The end of the week has a Mercury square so there is some confusion. Don’t make big financial decisions mixing friends and money. Follow up with people that are different and unusual. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This New Moon week fills you with optimism about your business situation and the direction in which your public life is heading. There is the touch of the unconventional life which becomes more exciting. You will be inspired by someone’s terrific idea wanting to take action on a specific project.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 The New Moon in Sagittarius stirs up restlessness and fires up your interest in people and places overseas or interstate. Fresh ideas give you a new slant on your future. There is depth to your message and weight to your words. There is a benefit on financial partnerships and the motivation of others. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This has to be an inspirational Sagittarius New Moon for you this week, which is made more thoughtful by Mercury’s entrance into this philosophical sign. This has you dreaming of lofty goals and lifts your confidence to reach for them. Time now to find the truth about your finances with tax matters. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This New Moon in Sagittarius fires an arrow in the air to find new partners, as old partners are being examined for their worthiness. There are newcomers widening now in your circle of influence, perhaps teachers, promoters or sales persons. Good time now for possible sales and relocating. CANCER June 22 – July 22 With the New Moon and Mercury combining their force into the Sagittarius sign this week, it makes you more adventurous than usual, encouraging a horizon-broadening open minded agenda. Possibly it also relates to an interest in natural health and revitalising business improvements. New inspiration.

LEO July 23 – August 22 Whilst this is a week for you to put a stylish spin on your words, exaggeration and excess is not suitable, so you will have to double check your data before passing it on. Concentrate on inspirations towards play, fun, enjoyment of children and gregarious humour filled communications at this time. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 With the Sagittarius New Moon working out resolutions for any problem traps of the past, there is no need to put your mind into an obsessive loop. This is because information comes in confirming that you were right. Mercury now inspires you to think about the future and plan special holidays. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Your ruling planet is Venus and it’s now retrograding in your sector of old holiday memories. They may be both sad or happy from your early years and someone who now, perhaps returns to the fold. Nostalgic feelings sweep you away. Take initiative in relationships for best loving results. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This week is a visionary Sagittarius New Moon, which is a fiscal trigger into your security and self worth. You may be trying to expand your monetary vista, however a star pattern that says that what you are reaching for may not be as achievable as you think. Previous Eclipse tests temper-tantrums.

Three old stockmen found themselves in a nursing home sharing their different maladies with each other.
