W

ow, what a big difference a few weeks can make! After a very relaxing few weeks off for our Christmas and New Year break, we reopened the office the day after Campbell Newman had announced the 2015 State Government election. At that stage there was plenty of media speculation about what a smart thing he had done, in catching the other parties ‘off guard’, and at that early stage, the polls didn’t indicate Labor having much of a shot of returning from the political wilderness. However as the weeks went by, while there was some slightly more positive talk in Labor’s favour, and the candidates seemed to be busy out doing their ‘grassroots’ campaigning’, a momentum must have been building, particularly in our electorates of Glass House and Caloundra. So maybe Campbell Newman did catch Labor off guard early in January - however it would seem that three years was plenty of time for voters to know how they felt. Regards,

Massive swings against LNP By Greg Brown

5439 0188

12/60 Simpson Street, BEERWAH

In what is the biggest turn-around in Queensland’s political history, last weekend’s state election saw the Liberal-National Party’s (LNP) massive parliamentary majority slashed, ending the political career of Campbell Newman and bringing the Australian Labor Party to the verge of claiming government. Locally, the two sitting LNP members – Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell – have suffered a massive swing against them, far greater than the average swing against the LNP across the state. Mark McArdle (Caloundra) appears to have secured a narrow win over Jason Hunt (Labor). In what was one of the safest LNP seats in Queensland, Mr McArdle suffered an extraordinary 17.6% swing against him. In the 2012 election, Mr McArdle registered a two-party preferred result of 71.2% of the vote. This has now diminished to 53.6%. The picture is even grimmer for Andrew Powell in the seat of Glass House, who was ahead on a two party preferred count by only a few hundred votes. Mr Powell enjoyed a massive majority after the 2012 election, gaining 70.4% of the two-party

preferred vote, currently he leads Mr Hampstead 51.6% to 48.4% (two-party preferred). But after an astounding crash in his primary votes and an almost 13% increase in votes for the Labor candidate Brent Hampstead, Mr Powell has come close to losing his seat. It is too early to speculate as to what locals were unhappy with across the two electorates. Whether it was a protest against asset sales, a statement on what many say is the ‘combative’ style of the Premier, or voter dissatisfaction with Mr McArdle and Mr Powell. It will be the topic of much study and exploration in the weeks to come. If you would like to share your views with other readers send us a letter at editorial@gcnews.com.au

John and his wife Margaret moved to Beerwah in 1998 where he became an active member of the local Beerwah Peachester sub-branch. In 2006 and 2007 and then again in 2010 and 2011 he was the President of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch, and is currently the Treasurer and Senior Vice President, and has served in other committee roles over the years. John was also involved in establishing the Dropin Centre for veterans (which is located behind the RSL Club) in 2006 that serves a vital role for returned service people in our community and further afield, providing a range of support functions, including welfare and pension assistance. John said it was a real honour to receive the award; however John also said his wife Margaret deserves to share in the award for all the support she has given and tolerance she has shown over the years. John comes from a family with a strong history of military service, including his grandfather, father and mother, as well as his son and daughter, who both pursued military careers. His son joined the RAAF and is currently serving and his 16-year-

Order of Australia Medal recipient John Rouhan, treasurer of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch old grandson is working towards serving in the military. John saw active duty from 1967 and was discharged from the army in 1970; he then went on to complete two stints in the Army Reserve in the 1970s and 1980s. John was advised a few days before Australia Day that he would receive the award, and he will attend a ceremony at Government House later in the year for the formal presentation.

Community voice concern over Caloundra interchange A large turnout for the ‘Forest Appreciation Day’ on January 24 at Jowarra National Park at Glenview saw the local community voice their concerns at plans for the destruction of forests to make way for a massive Caloundra Road – Steve Irwin Way – Bruce Highway interchange. The plans put forward by the Department of Transport and Main Roads will see a ‘spaghetti junction’ of roads, fly-overs, roundabouts and intersections, which, according to the lobby group ‘Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest’, will see the clearing of 24 hectares of high-value vegetation containing endangered plant and animal species. “This forest is home to endangered koalas, many other species including endangered frogs and contains Nationally listed critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest,” said a spokesperson for the group. “It’s a special forest with great ecological and cultural significance.” State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle was invited to attend the ‘Save the Forest’ gathering, where he addressed the crowd. “The Bruce Highway is on the list for an upgrade to make our roads safer, however it cannot be upgraded at the expense of the Beerwah State Forest,” he said.

www.gcnews.com.au

“The roundabout proposed for the interchange at Caloundra and the Bruce Highway is simply too big. The current proposal consumes too much of our forest and habitats.” The Member for Caloundra said the current design should not be implemented. “An alternate plan can be proposed,” Mr McArdle said. “There has never been a full EIS (Environment Impact Statement) done on this site. “Community support to keep our forest also needs to continue.” As part of this continued community pressure, a postcard campaign was instigated by the ‘Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest’ group. Last Thursday, a contingent from the group fronted the Ashgrove electoral office of Campbell Newman before the election, with a giant koala presenting the accumulated postcards, protesting the development. “With this current government still failing to acknowledge the conservation values of the forest, each postcard boasts a photograph contributed by a wildlife photographer or conservationist so the Premier can see close up what we stand to lose,” explained the group representative. Federal Member for Fisher, Mal Brough has also been fighting to find a better solution. Mal has recently been investigating the option of linking Caloundra Road to the new Bells Creek

The ‘Glenview koala’ goes to hand the protest postcards to Campbell Newman’s office Road intersection on the highway, which could reduce the traffic flow from Caloundra to the highway, and hence the need for such a large road development. “Thanks to all who have been sending messages in support of my idea to link Caloundra Road with the new Bells Creek Road interchange. “Your feedback is much appreciated and I am hoping to provide you with a more detailed update via the Glasshouse Country News in the next couple of weeks,” he said. Stay tuned.

World’s largest wave pool one break away

At last week’s Council meeting, preliminary approval was given for the $90 million resort, waterpark, restaurant, shops and hotel and cabin-style accommodation development at Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Although the preliminary approval does not give the final go-ahead for the development to occur, according to Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, it is an important first step. “The resort and water park would complement Sunshine Coast’s strongest international brand in Australia Zoo as well as The Big Cart Track and Aussie World, which are all located within close proximity,” Cr Baberowski said. “This is one of the most important tourist

attractions council has considered in a long time. “The world’s first hi-tech wave pool will be valuable in our quest to promote the region as a national and international destination. “This development will create 400 jobs during construction and another 250 ongoing jobs upon opening. “The resort accommodation is sorely needed on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast and will benefit those townships in that area.” Tourism and Events Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray described the future resort as Sunshine Coast’s “Disney”. “Tourists will want to cuddle a koala, ride a wave and swim with the whales and they can do all that and more here on the Sunshine Coast,” Cr O’Pray said.

Real Estate Tip The difference between an ‘exclusive agency’ and a ‘sole agency’ is the extent of the entitlement of a selling agent to receive an agreed commission on the sale of a particular property. Under an “exclusive agency” the agent is entitled to receive the commission whether or not the agent is the cause of the sale.

Neighbourly support for Twinnies

Serving Beerwah and surrounding areas for over 16 yrs

By Lea Parkes

This couldn’t have come at a better time said Helen Powers from Twinnies Pelican & Seabird Rescue when she was told that Allan Lear, Director of Transportable Shade Sheds, and the Hahn Group from Landsborough, wanted to donate a brand new shade shed enclosure to the Twinnies to help with their Pelican and Seabird rehabilitation work on the Sunshine Coast. The shade shed will be used for housing Pelicans who are recovering from botulism, a disease that affects Pelicans when they eat contaminated food, and has a lengthy recovery period. The Twinnies care for hundreds of sick and injured birds each year and sadly the numbers are increasing. Allan said the girls do an amazing job and they want to make sure that continues by getting the community behind them. “It was one of our team, Claire Smith, an avid wildlife lover, and volunteer with the wildlife rehabilitator who also helps at the Twinnies when she can, that originally made me aware of the great work that they do,” Allan said.

The Twinnies with Allan Lear (centre) and Meredith the Pelican who is on the road to recovery “It is amazing how resourceful the Twinnies and their mum Helen are with the items that are donated. The way they reused and recycled building materials to create the structures they need would put most fellas to shame. “We hope that other local companies will join us in supporting them in the great work they do. “Pelicans are one of my favourite birds and I’ve seen them all over the world during my travels. “When I heard about Josh, a big male pelican rescued on the Maroochy river, who was tangled in fishing line with hooks embedded in his neck, I felt really sorry for him and I wanted to help Twinnies continue the great work they do.” With the rescue centre being just down the road from the Shade Shed showroom and workshops, it’s great that they are helping out their neighbours. The Twinnies are also looking for supporters and are keen for anyone that would like to volunteer with them to give them a call on 5439 9995.

One good deed attracts another

Contributed by Bob McLean

It’s amazing to see how one good deed attracts another and how the community spirit comes to the fore. Late last year, Ian the Men’s Shed treasurer, was doing his regular laps at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre, and he received a request if the men could build some table and bench seat units to replace the ageing and unsafe seating. These old settings have provided shade and a spot for families for many years to sit observing the children in the pool or a place to tuck into a serving of hot chips from the canteen, but they were definitely past their use by date. The men agreed to assist with the project. In December the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee was approached to fund the project. Why you may say should they fund this? Although the Aquatic Centre is a part of the Sportsground complex, the water filtration system backwash water has been used to irrigate the main football oval for the past four years.

Grounding in science and fiction The dream of becoming a science fiction writer is now one step closer to reality for Glass House Mountains teenager Jesse Hughes who has just enrolled to study at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Jesse, who achieved an OP2 at Glasshouse Country Christian College last year, said he was excited to have been accepted into USC’s combined degree in Arts and Science majoring in Creative Writing and Mathematics. “My two favourite subjects at school were creative writing and science, so it made sense to study both at university,” he said. “Choosing to study at USC was also an easy

decision for me to make as it’s close to home and easily accessible by public transport, or by car if I manage to get my drivers licence before semester starts,” he said. The studious 17-year-old said that reading Douglas Adams ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ a few years ago sparked his desire for a future career of writing science fiction. “I also enjoy fantasy books, such as New York Times Bestselling Author R.A. Salvatore’s popular ‘The Icewind Dale Trilogy’,” he said. An estimated 3,900 new students will begin study at USC this semester. For details about applying to study, contact the

Tennis a sport for all By Lea Parkes

As part of the Landsborough recent Tennis Club’s grand opening celebration of their new and upgraded tennis courts, member for Caloundra Mark McArdle and long-time club member and Treasurer Dawn Wendt were on hand to cut the official ribbon. This was followed by the club’s 86-year-old patron Iris Tilbury who served the first ball to an 11-year-old junior member. The total funding required for the project was $220,000 with State Government providing $100,000, the Club contributing $60,000 as well as $60,000 from the Sunshine Coast Council and $24,000 from Tennis Queensland. Acting club President Adam Brehend said the tennis courts were way overdue for an upgrade. “Redevelopment of the tennis courts will be of

Community News Dedication to bush poetry recognised By Lea Parkes

It may not have been an Australia Day honour, but recently Embracia resident Mary Hobson was honoured to be presented with ‘Life Membership’ of the North Pine Bush Poets. Mary was recognised for her many years of conspicuous service to the Group and Bush Poetry. Club President Wally Finch said Mary’s love of their art form had always been obvious in her performances which had been thoroughly enjoyed by her audiences. “Many new poets have been grateful for her guidance and example,” he said. For this special occasion, Mary, 93, was joined by her daughter from Darwin and 20 fellow bush poets from the group. Since moving to Embracia, Mary no longer attends the group’s meetings, however she still

A warm welcome at Crystal Waters Market After a long break over the holiday season, the folk at Crystal Waters are looking forward to the first market of the year on Saturday, February 7 from 8.00am – 1.00pm. The regulars will be back with renewed energy, with delicious meals and snacks, fresh vegetables, herbs, seedlings, honey, native trees, crafts and of course sourdough bread and pastries from the wood-fired oven. Local musicians entertain at each market. Every market brings new stall holders and there’s an exciting variety and vibrancy this month. Soy candles, fair trade products from around the world, a new visual artist, and the ever-changing bric-a-brac stalls are just some of the offerings. Please note as it is a Land for Wildlife property there are no dogs allowed, and there is no ATM on site. Crystal Waters is located at 65 Kilcoy Lane, Conondale (off Aherns Road).

The park at Landsborough known as ‘Skippy Park’ can now officially claim the title following last Thursday’s council meeting. The decision was made to support an application to formalise the name which was first given in recognition of the kangaroos that often visit. Local Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski, who submitted the park name application with overwhelming support from local residents, said the muchloved community park had been known as Skippy Park for many years by locals. “In recent times council has invested significantly in Skippy Park and this has dramatically increased visitation and pride in this park,” Cr Baberowski said. “We’ve improved the park’s active play, sport and recreational facilities, vegetation, public amenities and road infrastructure, which together have also increased user numbers and enhanced the range of visitor experiences. “The name is very well accepted and wellknown by the local community and once the name is formally endorsed I’m looking forward to council constructing an effective park entry statement.”

Men wanted to sing

Maleny Players members Colleen South, Tony Bianco, Catriona McKechnie, Tracey Bianco, Deborah Yffer, Karin Lincoln and Tony Glazebrook Men and women of the ‘Maleny players’ walked in the Australia Day parade at Buderim recruiting men to sing and perform in the World War 1 Centenary performance of a new work by David Crewe and Paul Coppens called ‘ANZAC Dawn’. In this centenary year since the beginning of the First World War, the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show Society, in conjunction with the Queensland State ANZAC Centenary Grants Program and the Sunshine Coast Council, are funding an arena spectacular to commemorate the ANZACs in WW1. The work includes the Light Horse Brigade, brass bands, massed choir, music, special effects and live action. It will be performed each evening of the 2015 Agricultural Show held at the Nambour Show Grounds on June 12, 13 and 14. As Paul Coppens, composer and Musical Director of ‘ANZAC Dawn’, explains “we want a massed choir of even numbers of men and women,” he said. “Generally it is easy to find lots of women who want to sing, but the men are sometimes more reluctant. “One hundred years ago young men were asked to enlist to fight for their country. Today we are calling for men, young and old, to enlist to sing in honour of those who went to war.” For more information visit www.anzacdawn.com.au or call 5445 4156.

Big year for Teghan’s Dance Club! In September 2014 Teghan’s Dance Club (TDC) had their first Dance Camp. It was such a success and the kids had so much fun that Teghan held another in January over the summer holidays. She will be holding another during September school holidays, so we say, stay tuned for that. Teghan has also begun to mentor a new student teacher Josh, who is now running the Boys Club classes on a Tuesday afternoon. Josh has been training and performing with the talented Sole Studios for a few years, known for their dynamic hip hop choreography, so we can expect great things. Advanced hip hop classes are on Tuesday afternoons with Josh also for those extra driven students who love a challenge. The Dance Club’s end of year concert was performed over two spectacular nights back in November. Teghan said she could not be prouder of her students. “The concert went so smoothly and I'm so warmed by the amazing feedback I continue to get, even weeks afterwards,” she said. TDC classes kick off in the second week of this term. Get in quick as classes are booming. Josh in the end of year concert

This year has started well with over 300 Year 7 and Year 8 students joining the team at Beerwah SHS. Students look wonderful in their junior school uniforms and have settled into secondary school really well. We look forward to them becoming active members of our community and hope they enjoy the range of new subjects that they can now study.

Little feet taking big steps Contributed by Kylie Merola The atmosphere was buzzing when 50 prep students walked into Landsborough State School for their first day of school last Tuesday. Crisp uniforms, new black shoes and a tight grip of mum or dad's hand were all common features for students on their first day. There were plenty of smiles and only a few tears as little feet took the big step into school life. Any first day jitters were soon forgotten once children settled into their classrooms and new friends were made. Proud parents took happy snaps of this milestone, watching their child start school and begin their education journey. Once the first school bell rang for the year, the school's P&C Association provided a 'tea and tissues' morning tea for Prep parents to help calm those first day emotions. Landsborough State School is looking forward to a busy school year ahead with many exciting things already on the agenda for 2015.

Beerwah locals launch the ‘Aussie Made Challenge’ Local Beerwah manufacturer Trailers 2000 have recently launched a new incentive titled ‘the Aussie Made Challenge’. The team have thrown out the challenge to other Aussie manufacturers to build their product in the shape of Australia in an innovative endevour to highlight both Australian diversity and quality in manufacturing. It’s a great concept and it’d be terrific if other manufacturers took up the challenge. In a bid to inspire others in 2015, the team at Trailers 2000 have posted a clip on YouTube showing the building of their unique Australian shaped trailer and highlighting the fact that Aussies make great stuff that is tough and built to last – check it out at http://youtu.be/ce5XUF6W1JQ With over 20 years of manufacturing industry leadership behind them, the team is seeking to encourage everyone to be positive and to keep Australia moving by showing that Australians are creative, innovative and proudly doing business as well as continuing to manufacture. By innovating they remained in the steel manufacturing business when others have shut their doors, successfully competing against cheaper Chinese products. The quality of their product speaks for itself and they are now the largest manufacturer of its type in Australia. Family owners Stuart and Jenny want to show Aussies make great stuff and they want to encourage others – especially the other determined hardworking Aussie businesses – to show what they are doing, to keep Australia working, growing and strong. So the challenge has emerged and the Trailers 2000 team have built the first box trailer in the shape of Australia! It's the first of its kind anywhere in Australia or the world!

Health Check Landsborough Complete Chiropractic Care Three reasons to work out with a buddy! Don’t let headaches and back pain affect the quality of your life. Consider coming in to Landsborough Complete Chiropractic Care to help assist you in effectively addressing these issues. Chiropractor Dr Ben Appleyard joined the Complete Care Chiropractic team last year. He brings with him 10 years of experience in helping people by reducing pain and restoring function through a process of corrective care. Areas that can potentially benefit from chiropractic care include relief from problems such as headaches, neck pain and upper and lower back pain. There are times when your body lets you know that it needs some help. Whether it is back pain, tiredness, discomfort, disease or other ailments, you don’t have to endure life’s toils. Contact the friendly team at Complete Chiropractic Care and take the steps to assist in improving your overall health and well-being. As part of their service, providing clients with a complete care package, Dr Ben and the team at Landsborough Complete Chiropractic Care can also provide nutritional guidance and supplementation, custom made orthotics and education classes. Along with measures to reduce pain and discomfort, Dr Ben encourages healthy life-style choices to ensure you get the most benefits from his care.

The buddy system isn't just for little kids crossing the street, and here are three benefits why hitting the gym with a pal is a good idea. One, you'll be more motivated, when you don't feel like working out after work, it’s one thing to cancel plans with yourself, but it's another to cancel on your friend someone who's counting on you. Exercising with another person pushes you to do your workout and do it to the best of your ability. Two, you'll work out harder, whenever you're working out with someone else, the intensity is always going to be higher than when you're alone. The more you change up your workout, the better your body is going to respond. Three, recover together, there’s nothing worse than undoing all your hard work at the gym with unhealthy foods. A friend who’s worked up a sweat with you is likely to want to join you for a healthy post-exercise meal or snack. Give Maximise Fitness a call today on 5439 0949 to take advantage of our February promotion, buy one get one free membership fee.

Safer Streets funding released

I am very pleased to announce that, as part of my election commitment, the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce have received their first installment of Safer Streets funding for the installation of CCTV in Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains. The CCTV will cover hot spots in both townships near the railway stations and nearby shops as identified by the local police, and will greatly assist in crime prevention and prosecuting any offenders. It is expected that the CCTV will be operational by the end of October, 2015. I will continue to keep the community updated on the progress.

The Coochin Creek rockholes at Beerwah have been used by generations of youngsters for swimming. Coochin Creek Bushland Group, a group of volunteers who assist council in maintaining the area, would like to see this continue. Unfortunately a small group of individuals who do not care about the area are cutting down and damaging large trees and other vegetation. It is the roots of these trees and other plants that hold the soil together and enable the rockholes to exist. Eventually floods will sweep away the bar, destroying the waterhole. A tree that has recently been cut down will be swept into the rockhole making it unsafe to swim. These trees are needed for shade for users, and the water itself needs to be shaded to prevent algal growth. The stupid and senseless vandalism needs to stop and is illegal, as the area is in an important section of the Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve. Damage attracts fines amounting to several thousand dollars. In order to save the area for future generations, the damaged section needs to be rehabilitated, which means that part of the area will need to be cordoned off for a period, but this should not prevent use of the rockholes. The cooperation of all users is needed in order to achieve this. Coochin Creek Bushland Group Beerwah

Australia Day Citizenship Ceremonies

Becoming an Australian citizen on Australia Day is truly something special and this Australia Day I was honoured to share that experience with new citizens at the Maleny, Caloundra and Kawana citizenship ceremonies. This is the second year that I have officiated the Maleny citizenship ceremony at the Maleny Showgrounds and it is an event that I really look forward to. Citizenship events reaffirm why we are so lucky to call Australia home and to meet people who want to become Australians and live our values is reinvigorating. Congratulations to all of our new citizens!

NBN will be coming to Maleny and Beerwah in the next two months. Under what planning laws and regulations does it operate and how will the community be able to test its safety, honesty and reliability before towers are built? The Telecommunications Act 1997 and the Telecommunications Code of Practice 1997 covers mobile phone and other free-standing towers. The installation of free-standing Fixed Wireless facilities (i.e. the installation of new towers) by NBN does not seem to be covered by this code. The Code is: C564; 2011, 'Mobile Phone Base Station Deployment'. This Code specifies best practice in the area of installation of mobile phone radio communications infrastructure. Quote: ‘It requires the application of a precautionary approach to mobile phone Radio communications infrastructure and contains obligations on Carriers to consult. Because the Code draws its authority from the Telecommunications Act, it can apply only to Telecommunications Carriers, carriage service

providers and content service providers and certain others.’ What we have discovered in our research on NBN and its public obligations under the Act and the Code is that NBN only has to voluntarily adhere to that code - in other words, it’s not bound by any telecommunications code and while conforming to prescribed radiation patterns on the towers, does not have to conform on home antennas. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says - 'NBN Co is not required to provide 'siting criteria' to the ACMA for either low-impact or other transmission facilities,' (P.Emery, ACMA, 22/1/15). NBN will have to put in a Development Application to council, but does not on federal codes. In summary, NBN Co is not legally required to adhere to codes on siting or erection of towers except for engineering considerations (ACMA). How did we get to this? Richard Giles Conondale

Thumbs up

Thank you so much Jeff Brown. I recently ran over a stick in my mighty chariot / wheelchair pulling out wiring, making the chair unable to tilt, to reduce pressure on my back. It was Saturday morning Australia Day weekend and the only solution would have been to stay in bed until Tuesday. Nooooo! So a call to Jeff Brown in desperation who had just returned to the office for parts. A look underneath at a dangling wire and then following the wire showed a plug was unplugged so problem solved. You're my hero Jeff, thank you so very much. Sharon Chamberlain Glass House Mountains

Thank you visitors to Skippy Park

We are a small community that reside at Skippy Park. In the past we have felt neglected, ignored and hungry, however that has all changed. People now visit us and even feed us on a regular basis. We, as a community, would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the visitors to Skippy Park who have welcomed us into their fold and included us in their visits. Just disgusted

I have a disabled son with autistic characteristics who doesn't communicate much. Before Christmas I sent him into a local business with $10.00 to get a gift for his brother. He purchased a set that included a watch, torch and a pocket knife; however he did not get a receipt. After giving his brother the gift he noticed that the torch was corroded. So on January 27, I returned the item on behalf of my son, and explained the situation to the employee. The staff member advised that without a receipt, they would not provide a refund. While this might be in line with the Queensland Government’s consumer rights, I was really surprised that they did not take into consideration the entire situation. For me I feel that this is discrimination against my son as he wouldn't have known he had to get a receipt in the first place! Name Supplied Beerwah

On these warm summer days you may not be surprised to find a snake in the grass, however Luke from Glass House Mountains didn’t expect to find a ‘shark in the grass’. He was out walking the dog along Fullertons Road, at the western end of the small forested 'traffic island' that splits the road just off Coonowrin Road, and the dog became excited about a smell. Luke said she's a small dog, so he never lets her go into places where he can't see what might be lurking. He said he held her back while he stepped closer to look, and saw... a shark in the grass … really! It was only small, but still quite intact, despite being a bit knocked around. It obviously hadn't been there very long, as it didn't smell - yet - and wasn't decomposing. Not wanting to leave it to start rotting and smelling he called council, and they sent an officer out to collect it, when he returned to the spot in the afternoon it was gone. Luke reckons their morning walks are a much more inquisitive activity now, and he’s hoping soon to report on discovering the final resting place of Noah's Ark, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, or in fact, a lost Great White trying to hitchhike its way back to the Pacific. Be careful where you tread, snakes and ticks may not be the only thing in the long grass. So, here at GCNews we’d like to hear your best ‘story’ to try and explain why a baby shark would be in the grass on Fullertons Road. If you have an explanation of what forces may be at play, send it to editorial@gcnews.com.au and we’ll print some of the good ones.

An insight into Glasshouse Mountains Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy was developed in Australia by Thomas Ambrose Bowen. Tom Bowen passed away in 1982 however today Bowen Therapy is practiced in over 30 countries. In recognition of Tom Bowen’s contribution to health, a memorial can be found in West Park in Geelong Victoria. A skilled Bowen therapist will detect areas of tension and dysfunction held within the musculoskeletal system using their hands and fingers. This skill, developed over time along with special testing, is instrumental in each treatment.

Headaches, back pain, neck and shoulder tension, knee injuries, hip and hamstring pain, plantar fasciitis, digestive problems, prolonged stress, grief, sinus and respiratory complaints are just some of the conditions which Bowen Therapy can address. Practicing for eight years, and working from purposefully built therapy rooms in tranquil settings, Tracy holds a diploma of Bowen Therapy, Master class and is an accredited member of The Bowen Association of Australia and The Bowen Academy of Australia.

Living - Music Music Today

with Dr Michael Whiticker

Building your own instrument

Last year I wrote a column on having an old Morley harp renovated by Geoff Welham in Grafton. In the process I drove down to pick up the instrument and had the pleasure of a few hours in Geoff’s company – chatting about music, playing his instruments and viewing his lovely house and picturesque workshop in a truly idyllic setting. What excited me most however was to learn of his annual week-long harp making workshops, which are very reasonably priced (from $750.00 in 2014) and allow you and a friend or family member if it suits, to camp on Geoff’s property and spend the week building a harp under Geoff’s expert guidance. I thought to myself what a wonderful bonding experience this would be for family members – e.g. fathers wanting to spend positive time with their sons or daughters before it is too late! Of course this sort of experience is not limited to the harp! A little googling for the instrument of your choice will tell you what is available in your area. African drum making is fashionable, as is didjeridoo, marimba and flute building, and guitar and ukulele building is especially popular. Hancock Guitar Making for example have an annual two-week course on the Gold Coast, but probably one of the best approaches I have seen is that offered by the Australian Guitar Making School. They have a number of locations in Australia including one in Sumner (South West Brisbane) and provide four hour workshop sessions for a max of six people, each of whom is given a workbench space and expert instruction for the session. They offer daily and evening sessions, and participants are encouraged to attend weekly and can expect to take up to six months to build their instrument. It is such a popular concept that 60% of attendees go back to make a second and third instrument with some even on their tenth instrument! I have always been a playing sort of person, leaving the building of my instruments to experts and eccentrics and then taking pleasure in making music with what they create for me. Perhaps it is time for me to take a step back and get my hands dirty! Have a great month and fantastic 2015!

Live entertainment with the Glasshouse Musos By Sonia Clark The Glasshouse Musos kick off this year with some changes to session times as well as the opportunity to participate in or listen to great local talent at a brand new venue. From the beginning of this month there will be a new midweek session venue at Wild Rocket @ Misty’s in Montville (142 Main Street, Montville) on the first and third Thursday of each month from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. The Musos will also meet at Eudlo (Eudlo Hall, Rosebud Street) on the first Sunday afternoon of the month and now at Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchants (Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains) on only the third Sunday afternoon of the month. So music lovers - you only have to remember that the gigs run on the first and third Thursday and Sunday monthly! The Thursday sessions at Montville came out of a desire to start a midweek evening event. The new venue is an a la carte licenced restaurant with an outdoor undercover space that will sit 100. Keen to encourage regulars, the venue owners will provide reasonably priced meals on the Thursdays including a range of delicious gourmet burgers. This venue should prove popular with Musos from the Nambour, Palmwoods, Landsborough and Maleny areas, all of whom are only a short drive away. Continuing this year will be the notion of ‘monthly themes’ for the various sessions. These provide a fun inspiration for people to try something new though they provide a guide only - as anything and everyone is welcome at Glasshouse Musos. Over the coming months, a few ideas have been suggested. As February features Valentine day, ‘songs of intimacy’ will be the suggested theme. The month of March heralds the birthday of the great Eric Clapton who turns 70 this year. Given his enormous contribution to music, it would be hard not to find something that fitted with theme Eric. April will feature the suggestion of cover versions but with an original twist and the month of May will feature the theme of the music of Bob Dylan. For more information see www.glasshousemusos.com.au or contact Michael on 0419 026 895. www.gcnews.com.au

with Sonia Clark

Great eats and treats to find locally!

7 Secrets Pizza I always enjoy it when Lea asks me to do a Dine in Take out as it gives me a good excuse to pop out of the office and relax whilst getting something to eat while claiming that, “I’m working!” One of my favourite cuisines to enjoy is Italian so when Lea asked me to drop into 7 Secrets Pizza I was pretty happy to oblige. With over 14 types of pizza on offer and a large selection of traditionally made pasta dishes I felt spoilt for choice. Pizza’s come in four sizes, from small (9”) to family sized (15”) and range from established favourite selections like Meat Lovers, Tropicana and Margherita to more traditional Italian specialities like Quattro Stagioni, Napoletana and Capriccios.

With a relaxed casual dining feel, as well as take away options, the range is really comprehensive and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. Gluten free bases are available in all medium sizes and all pizza’s can have extras added - both these options are available for a small additional cost so really there is something to suit everyone. I decided to go for the vegetarian pizza and what can I say but yum! It was a really tasty mix of veges with a light garlic tomato sauce – it definitely had a taste of Italy about it and I was pretty impressed. Of course once I finished my pizza I needed something sweet, so spent a few happy minutes checking out the 20 different flavours of Colin James gourmet icecream.

I settled on the blueberry sorbet, but in the spirit of investigative journalism, also had to have a sneaky sample of the banoffee and honeycomb sorbet. New flavours come in all the time and most of the flavours are gluten free. There is also a comprehensive cold drink selection including frappes, smoothies and caffeine free chillers. While the Pasta and Pizza menu starts from 11.00am Tuesday to Sunday, the shop is open from 8.30am (until 8.30pm) serving Vincenza coffee, wraps, slices and hot bakery items. Out & About No tears for first day of school Contributed by Sandy Johnson The first day of school for 70 Prep students at Glasshouse Country Christian College was full of smiles and excitement. If there were any slightly wobbly grins it was on the parents’ faces rather than the students. The GCCC Prep teachers, Heather Dodwell, Tanya Lindsay, Lin Smith and Lauren Kuhn, have been introducing little children to school life for years, and they know how to do it well. There are activities set up for the students as they arrive and everything has their name on it. Mum and dad are greeted warmly and then it is time for them to leave before anyone can become too emotional. Outside the library, staff man the Tim Tams and Tissues stand, helping parents who may have a few tears as they let go and adjust to the fact that their little one is now at school. Chocolate and coffee help everything.

Mother, Jayne Hinds and her daughter, Milla, are welcomed to Prep by teacher Lin Smith

Liam Courtney looks right at home in Prep with his mum Krystal and dad Daniel

Sophie Sharma is all smiles as she begins Prep with her mum Sarah and her dad Ravinesh helping her settle in before class begins

Oliver Dalleau gives us his biggest, bravest and best smile as he settles into Prep with dad Fred and mum Kristy to help him

As a special treat Micah Constant had his grandmother Paia Ingram bring him to school for his first day of Prep

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Pastor Margaret Neithe - Glasshouse Country Untiting Church It's a new year and you're cleared for takeoff. Where will this year take you? On a holiday! To a new job, school, place to live… so many unknowns. We live in a world where the unknown is viewed with fear, anticipated with joy or even approached with hesitation. I think for me it depends on attitude… Beginning a new day with a positive attitude allows for positive things to take place - looking for that silver lining my grandmother used to say, what is your silver lining? Is it being the fittest you have ever been? Or for you is it the quiet place with a good book and a cuppa (of whatever you like best)? The silver lining in my day is a smile from someone for no reason at all. Ever tried going for your morning walk and meeting only people who look the other way (hey! did I forget to put something on! Is my shirt on backwards!) Or smiling a warm (well I think it’s warm) hello and the person blindly passes by. Well it’s when a person smiles warmly back with a cheery ‘morning’ that for me is when the silver

lining starts to shine through. The flip side is starting the day with a negative attitude and sometimes we are not even aware our attitude is negative until we get a response. Would you like someone being negative to you? This is where for me attitude begins. How do I want people to respond to me? Well! I guess if you enjoy being negative then this is most likely not the article for you to be reading. However, should you prefer or enjoy people responding in a positive way to you, and your activity or manner, then I think we should put it out there and be positive. I have been fortunate and many people around me infuse me with positives’ on a daily basis. A fortunate life you might say, well I would say a positive one. So for each of you who read this, I pray that you find yourself ready for takeoff cleared for a pathway into a positive and successful year…

Kids to ‘Get Started’ at sport and recreation clubs in 2015

Glass House children are being urged to kick-start an active new year, by signing up for sporting vouchers under state Government’s ‘Get in the Game’ program. Get Started vouchers of up to $150.00 can help mums and dads meet the costs of registration. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP said applications for Round 5 of the Get Started program were open from January 28. “Get Started has been hugely successful, and I have no doubt we are going to see a flurry of applications in this round as parents, carers and guardians look to get their children involved in sport and recreation,” Mr Powell said. “Queenslanders love their sport, but cost of living pressures often put playing sport out of the reach of many, so it’s wonderful that we’ve been able to make it an option for many Glass House families again.” For more information on Get Started, visit www.nprsr.qld.gov.au

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

The great white hunter? A man had come back from his hunting trip in Africa. He gloats to his friend about the giant, silver back Gorilla he had spent the whole time tracking. "All I had on me to kill it was my lucky cricket bat, my hunting rifle with only one bullet, and my two hunting knives," explained the man. "Did you kill it in the end?" asked his friend. "Sure did," grinned the man. "It was quite tricky, but I did." "How so?" said the friend. "Well," he explained, "when I had finally found the beast, I first attempted to knock it out with my bat, but the brute snatched it out of my hand, pushed me aside, and snapped it in half. Angry at loss of my

lucky bat, I proceeded to load my one bullet into my rifle and fired at the animal, but the swift git was quick enough to dodge it. I was furious at this point, I threw my gun on the ground, and in my rage I took out both of my knives and threw them at him, but the cheeky thing managed to catch both of them in mid-air." This left the friend confused, so he finally asked the man, "how did you manage to kill it then?" "Well you see," explained the man "after it had caught my knives, it started to beat its chests shouting AaaaaAAaaaaAAaaAAaaaa!" Submitted by Miley, Glasshouse

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 With these Aquarian energies around, together with the full Moon in Leo this week, it’s a great time for social gatherings. With the drama of a Sun / Jupiter opposition it can mean using excessive money which will not serve you well under a Mercury retrograde. Double check any travel matters. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Don’t blow your resources under the current stars this week as with Mercury still retrograde, this is a time to cap your spending and reorganise your resources. Not only do you need to watch your accounts, but write down a budget and don’t let anyone grab your financial power. Expand your vision. LEO July 23 – August 22 With expansive Jupiter in your royal sign of Leo and the full Moon this Wednesday, you will be drawing positive attention to your regal million dollar luck! The spotlight is firmly on you looking more glamorous. With Mercury going direct mid-month, make time to end the old and start a new direction. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Sun and Mercury have been transiting your zone of work and health, pets and dependents, co-workers, the medical world, and your physical wellbeing. So with the Leo full Moon this week, and the entry of the Moon into your sign this weekend, you will want private time for yourself.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 With the full Moon in Leo you will likely have a great time in grand style this week. This is accentuated by the beneficial planet, Jupiter, in your friend’s and social life sector. You will probably even start planning Valentine’s Day celebrations this early. Wait until after February 11 for best results. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 With revolutionary planets currently in Aquarius this lights up your family and home matters and relations with older relatives. The full Moon is in another fixed sign like yours, namely Leo. So for a few days you may feel unstable until the weekend. Better ideas await you mid-month now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With the Aquarius planets and the full Moon bringing fire and air into your sign, it livens up all friendly communications, perhaps this is time to show off your intellectual skills and dazzle people over the weekend. You could be the local ‘good will Ambassador’! Local or interstate travel is enjoyable. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 With Mercury having been retrograde for the past couple of weeks, and still with one week to go, your financial wheels will become greased with good ideas, opportunities, skill sets and progressive attitudes. There is a Piscean influence drawing you into comfortable activities with close friends.

Week beginning 04/02/2015 AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 By mid-month you might want to change your personal style to represent a new you, and a new shining personality, that is a brighter light for this year. With the full Moon in Leo this Wednesday, leading to the weekend in Virgo, cooperation is a key for positive harmonious alliances. PISCES February 20 – March 20 With Mercury retrograde the full Moon this week in Leo and other planets in Aquarius, you may be lost in introspective, reflective thought, creating or dreaming up new ways to escape from reality. Between now and February 18 check your diet and exercise as Jupiter brings health and wealth. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The emphasis this week will be with new and old friends and perhaps having some fun with fresh new acquaintances. The full Moon is in the dramatic sign of Leo and pitches its social delights into your romantic area, or perhaps having fun with your children. Weekend sees extra household chores. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week sees you bringing urgency into the situation. There is a lightened increased confidence to tie up all loose ends. Some cancellations and misunderstandings may lurk around this week due to the Mercury retrograde period, which finishes next Wednesday. You clear up misunderstandings.
