Hi Everyone Last week we experienced some very yucky (technical term) weather here in Glasshouse Country which unfortunately for parents of school age children, coincided with the first week of the school holidays. But for the kids in vacation care at Mooloolah, when I visited last week – the weather didn’t seem to be too much of a concern. The group making ‘Olympic Cupcakes’ seemed very focused on their task and not too bothered about what was going on outside. It is always great taking photos of kids for the Out and About section of the paper – they know the drill – when to smile, when to pose a little, and then to ask if they can check the back of the digital camera to see that they are happy with my work! When I arrived there was plenty of activity happening and the group that was programmed for the cooking class seemed very keen to get started.
Initially I assumed that they were enthusiastically getting through the baking task and looking forward to getting those tasty treats in the oven. Then I realised the real focus was seeing who could get the most flour on themselves and then working out how they would be able to get away with eating the left over mixture in the bowls, see page 20 for the photos. Mmmm I realise it is a very long time since I was a kid and I had definitely forgotten that for kids it is really just as much about the fun of the journey than the end result ... not a bad lesson for us adults! Regards,

Positive news for Chaplaincy More students in the Glass House region are set to benefit when Chaplaincy services are expanded in coming weeks. Despite recent concerns over future funding of the valuable service, four primary schools and one high school, including Beerburrum State School, Glass House State School, Beerwah State School, Landsborough State School and Beerwah High have all received new funding for a chaplaincy service two days a week. Scripture Union Area Manager Kerry Evans said it was great news for the local school communities. “The service provided by Chaplains is so important, in so far as having someone available to walk on the journey with students and staff, particularly at the moment, when that journey is so difficult,” Kerry said. “Chaplains are there to support and encourage students and staff, but their role goes beyond that. They provide a referral service as well as practical assistance,” he said. Kerry said there was a mistaken perception that the Chaplaincy service was based on a religious approach. “That is not the case. Chaplaincy is based on a pastoral care model rather than a religious model, and it’s about supporting the whole school community. “It’s not exclusive; it is open to everyone, regardless of their beliefs.” The latest funding announcement was delivered as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to the Chaplaincy service, following

a recent High Court ruling that questioned the validity of the Federal Government’s funding of the service. Scripture Union Queensland incoming CEO Peter James said last week’s swift action by the federal parliament to pass legislation to secure the school chaplaincy program was a clear sign of its widespread support. He said the overwhelming support across parliament during the last week of sitting before the winter recess was a huge encouragement for chaplains, who put their heart and soul into serving young people in schools. Local resident Aannsha Jones was quick to praise the Chaplaincy program at Beerwah High. “My son has benefited greatly from the services provided there, thanks to the tireless efforts of the lovely chaplain, Mike Turner,” she said. Currently there are around 40 chaplains in primary schools on the Sunshine Coast, and around 500 across the State.

Whether they are photographs, documents, videos or music, we urge people to ensure they have these precious files backed up properly. Ideally a ‘back up’ system will mean you have saved your data on at least two physical hard drives! An example of two hard drives would include the device inside your computer or laptop (which stores all the information) and a USB external drive (which is a separate device). Treat your USB external drive with great respect - dropping it can cause loss of data! We recommend too, that your two hard drives are not stored together as loss can also occur through theft or fire. If for some reason you have your data on only one hard drive and it fails, data recovery may be possible – an experienced computer technician will often be able to recover your data. However, in some circumstances the hard drive (including memory sticks, SD cards from cameras, etc.) may need to be sent away to a specialist centre and any recovery possible could cost over $1,000. Prevention is always the best solution. Back up before it’s too late. On-line back up is possible, but that’s another column. For information or help, phone Gus from Mooloolah Computers 0405 125 662.

As the pineapple industry clings to the hope of a reprieve in the 11th hour bid to stop Malaysian pineapples being imported into Australia, another thriving local industry is also facing an uncertain future. John Allen, who has been farming ginger for the past 12 years in Beerwah, has serious concerns about the industry’s future should the federal government agree to allow Fijian ginger to be imported into the country. The farmer, who also grows strawberries on his Oaklands Farms plantation in Beerwah, says there is a high risk of disease in Local ginger grower John Allen has concerns for the future of the Australian importing ginger from Fiji. ginger industry should the government approve imports from Fiji "We are very concerned and do not “It’s not only the risk to our crops from disease, believe that Biosecurity Australia have accurately it’s also the fact that imported produce is rated the risk of soil borne diseases entering generally cheaper than what we can produce it Australia. The Australian ginger industry has just concluded John said it seems like the federal government is its submission to the Federal Government’s IRA intent on selling primary producers out. Ginger Fast Facts By Jordan Dron, Beerwah State High Year 10 work experience student What do you think about the Federal Government’s plans to consider allowing fresh ginger imports from Fiji into the Australian market? John said he feels very strongly about the issue, as it could pose a huge threat to ginger farms in Australia. He believes the government has sold him and all ginger growers out. How much of a risk does disease from imported crops pose to the local industry? There is a very high risk of the Fijian ginger bringing unwanted organisms into our soil. Not only do these diseases affect ginger; they can also affect other crops, he said. The government has rated the issue as ‘indiscernible’, although the ginger industry claims that they have a lack of information on the effects.
How much does your ginger crop contribute to your annual crop production? Around 65 per cent of John’s crop is ginger. “That’s a business that pays over 1 million dollars in wages a year,” he said. The Australian ginger industry produces up to 10,000 tonne of ginger per year. John’s farm produces around 800 to 1,000 tonne, for Buderim ginger and the domestic fresh market. Why is the federal government considering the import of ginger? According to John - The application came to biosecurity Australia from businesses in Fiji when our industry was in short supply due to disease problems. We are now in a position to supply all of our requirements. However the application will remain in place.

Pineapple push
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell (left) and Agriculture minister John McVeigh (right) met with local pineapple growers including Murray Pike (centre) and agronomists in Beerwah last week to continue the fight against plans to allow fresh imports of Malaysian pineapples. Mr Powell said it wasn’t good enough to push for Fair Trade Agreements at the expense of the nation’s farmers. The matter has now been referred to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee. www.gcnews.com.au
Topping off a unique career “Elaine, I understand that you make beautiful hats,” said the voice on the other end of the line.
Elaine estimates she has made around 5,000 hats in her lifetime, and is pleased to be able to spread her passion for her craft around the world as people, mainly women, scramble to sign up to learn the basics. Elaine, who also teaches Millinery at the Queensland Museum and the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, says that despite all of her success, there is one thing still eluding the seasoned teacher. “I’ve yet to teach a male student, and I so desperately would like to,” she said. “While Australia has got a very good reputation for millinery, some of the best milliners in the world are men, so I am keen to get my first male student on board,” she said. If you would like to put your hand up and become one of Elaine’s first male students, or you just want to learn more about this mastercraft, you can sign up for the online tutorials at www.hatacademy.com
It was to become a phone call that would inspire Beerwah resident and master milliner, Elaine Mergard to great things. The person making that call was none other than former Queensland Governor, Her Excellency MS Quentin Bryce, and the series of events that was to follow would see Elaine find international success in her quest to breathe new life into the traditional art of millinery, more commonly known as hat making. Elaine has recently become the first person in the world to conduct online tutorials in millinery, using the traditional skills she was first taught when she was only 20 years of age, and says she is amazed by the level of response she has received. “I’ve got a passion for the traditional art of millinery, and a passion for teaching, so I realised it was time to start sharing all my knowledge and experience in this unique, hands on way,” Elaine said. Three years ago, the then 63-year-old grandmother realised it was time to start sharing her intimate knowledge and skills in the craft she had spent her life mastering, and set about starting up an online business featuring tutorials. Elaine with GCNews work experience student In that time, she has spent hours upon hours from Beerwah High, Jordan Dron documenting and filming her knowledge in a bid to share the age-old tradition with a new generation of women. Two steps forward, one step back In another devastating blow, on Thursday, June 24, the Beerwah Rural Fire Service shed on Roys Road, was broken into for the second time this year. In the latest incident, among the stolen items were two radios which had only just been replaced from the last break in, as well as two chainsaws recently donated by a local family. First officer Lou Spann was understandably gobsmacked. “What amazes me is that the equipment is heavily engraved with our Rural Fire Brigade details, which would make it really difficult for resale. In the case of the radios they are VHF
Lou Spann with new donated backpack blower
and are only able to be tuned to the 'Fireies' frequency,” Lou said. "While this burglary is not as devastating as the one earlier this year, it is just so frustrating and I really don't understand the mentality of those who would take emergency equipment," Lou said. "Following the incident in February we had made significant improvements to our security, however since this recent burglary we have made additional improvements and the location is now monitored as well. "And while any equipment stolen is insured, you never receive the full value of replacement costs for new equipment and it is also about the inconvenience caused for us to undertake our work in the time before the items are permanently replaced. "Fortunately with the wetter weather we have had more recently, it has not had as significant an impact as it may have in a dryer season," Lou said. On a positive note, the volunteer members of the brigade did find cause to smile last week, following the donation of a new Stihl backpack blower by the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains. Anyone with any information about the robbery should contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. Lou said they are always on the lookout for volunteers. If you can spare a few hours a month, come along to the next meeting night, held on the first and third Wednesday of the month, at 7.00pm, at the brigade headquarters located on Roys Road. For more information, contact Lou on 0438 389 998.
Great fundraiser at Landsborough Pub
With this year’s Hinterland Relay for Life event to be held at the Beerwah Sports ground on October 6 and 7, local participants ‘The Rank Outsiders’ have been hard at work fundraising. They recently held a successful event at the Landsborough Pub, over 50 attending a ladies lunch raising $1,300.00 for cancer research. One of the team members Davina Rankin said all the prizes were donated by local people and businesses. “Without their support the ladies lunch would not have been so successful and we wouldn’t have raised as much money as we did. “We would especially like to thank the Landsborough Pub for their generous donations and providing the venue which was beautifully decorated by Polly; Wood n Workshop for providing the major raffle for the day which was won by Amy Woods from Landsborough; Nut Shack Maroochydore for their lovely gift pack and Beerwah Print and Stationary who provided a generous discount on our promotional products,” she said. Special thanks should also go to the musicians on the day Max Russ and his band, Dean Heale, Andy and Julie, and also Lydia and Melissa Newton who generously donated their time and amazing talent for the day. 'The Rank Outsiders' will be continuing with fundraising activities, including a car rally in September, until the big Relay event in October. If anyone would like any information about their fundraising events or would like details about how to donate to the team you can contact them on therankoutsiders@hotmail.com

Council brings first budget down Last week the new Sunshine Coast Council bought down their first budget described by council as a budget that will build a sustainable Sunshine Coast with quality roads, parks and services. Mayor Mark Jamieson said council had made the tough decisions needed to keep the rate rise at the lower end for Queensland councils while maintaining infrastructure and services, the rate increase is 3.6 per cent which for the average property is about an extra dollar a week. "We have tightened our belts where possible and will continue to look for further savings over the life of the council. "One of our top priorities was to make the Sunshine Coast a better place to do business and our suite of economic development initiatives has us headed in the right direction." Among the key items of the $604 million budget for 2012/13: • a total capital works program of $146 million including $18 million for land acquisitions in the Maroochydore principal activity centre • $7.8 million for economic development initiatives • waste management rises kept to 9.2 per cent despite the introduction of a federal carbon tax (a car trip to the tip will stay the same, a trailer load rises by $2.00, commercial charges fall due to the scrapping of the State waste levy); • no increase in key levies such as the environment, public transport, tourism and heritage levies; • continuation of pension remissions, estimated at $3.8million; • continuation of early payment discounts, estimated at $8.8 million.
Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski said the budget process had been a tough one and responsible decisions had been made in the difficult financial climate. “Beerwah will see a design for the business area streetscape start to take shape. The design will be the translation of the community feedback from the Place+ consultation project. “Repairing unexpected landslips caused by wetter than usual conditions over the past two years remains a priority for council action. This year’s budget will focus on two priority land slip areas in Bald Knob and Diamond Valley. “Funds have also been allocated to improve local parks, pathways and storm water pipes that will be rolled out over the next 12 months. “There will be a number of opportunities to improve the pathway network throughout Division 1 and I will keep locals updated on on-ground activities as they occur in their community.” Some of the highlights for Division 1 in 2012/13: • Beerwah Sports Ground - Master plan implementation $245,000 • Landsborough Skippy Park - Stage 4 Install recreational activities $100,000 • Beerwah Business Area - Design streetscape $200,000 • Bald Knob, Bald Knob Road - Landslip repairs and retaining walls $400,000 • Diamond Valley, Brandenburg Road - Land slip repairs $244,000

Regional and Urban Planning student Susan Brown of Beerwah is definitely going places after attracting the attention of Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads. The 37-year-old University of the Sunshine Coast student was recently accepted into the department’s scholarship program after meeting the selection criteria of having a high grade point average and passing a lengthy interview process. The scholarship program is providing Susan with a living allowance, an education allowance and 24 weeks of employment over two years. The third-year student, who has two young children, said the Queensland Government scholarship would help her manage her work, university and family commitments. “I was very happy to receive the scholarship as it has taken the pressure off me having to look for a job and is also allowing me to implement my studies in the workplace,” she said. “My previous employment in the defence force gave me a good base for juggling a lot of commitments and the discipline to drive myself to do well.” Susan completed her first 12-week work placement with the Department of Transport and Main Roads in November 2011. One of her main roles was to examine the infrastructure needs of the planned Moreton Bay Rail Link. “I was involved in transport planning for the new rail line from Redcliffe to Kallangur,” she said. “This included looking at the design of the railway stations and how the architecture should reflect the area, and also the travel behaviour of commuters.”
Susan was also awarded a Planning Institute of Australia Student Academic Prize on May 29 at the launch of the 26th Queensland Awards for Planning Excellence at Parliament House. This prize recognises Susan’s academic achievements as a second-year student at USC in 2011.

My week at GCNews By Jordan Dron, Beerwah State High Year 10 student

EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES! • Make an appointment today and put your health first • No referral necessary
As a requirement to receive a Certificate in Work Education at my school, it is mandatory to complete 40 hours of work experience. I chose to do my work experience at Glasshouse Country News, as I thought it would be interesting to see first-hand what it’s like working as a journalist, or in administration. Over the past week I have completed a range of things that employees perform here at GCNews, and it has been a very fun and educational experience. Some of the many activities that I have participated in during the past week include reception work with Sarah, such as preparing and creating invoices in MYOB, data entry and sending prepaid invoices. Other things I have participated in include creating and processing advertising booking forms and typing and designing classified pages. These aspects of the job are more associated with the administration side of the business. Some of the other things I have done here at GCNews include attending a media call at a pineapple packing shed, where I took photos of Andrew Powell, John McVeigh and Murray Pike. It was very exciting to be part of a media call. On Thursday I went out with Kylie to interview Elaine Mergard about her millinery business, this was also quite stimulating as I got to take notes, and ask questions. This is a very enjoyable aspect of journalism. In conclusion I have had a very pleasant week at Glasshouse Country News, the employees very friendly, and I thoroughly enjoyed working here.

Wake up, Jeff!
The team at BOQ Beerwah have once again washed and ironed their flannelette pyjamas and shined their slippers to help launch the Bank’s annual children’s hospitals appeal. Last week, on Friday, June 29, the team wore their PJs to work to launch BOQ’s month long Banking on our Kids appeal, which aims to get sick Aussie kids back to their own beds. BOQ Beerwah Owner-Manager, Jeff Willis said the nationwide appeal was now in its ninth year and had so far raised over $1 million for sick kids around the country. “This appeal is about helping to get sick Aussie kids back to their own beds, because bedtime is a special time for children and parents; and even bad days can be cured by a bedtime story and goodnight kisses,” he said. “Sick kids in hospital aren’t just battling illnesses; they’re also battling home-sickness. Every kid wants to be at home getting tucked into their own bed and surrounded by their own toys.” The team are also running a competition to guess the number of lollies in the lolly jar (gold coin donation), and will hold a sweet stall outside the branch on Friday, July 6 from 9.30am. To support the appeal, which runs until the end of the month, visit boq. com.au/kids, or drop into the Beerwah branch at the Beerwah Marketplace.

JULY 4 2012
Glasshouse Country Care gives a big welcome to new team member, Lorraine, a recent graduate in the disabilities field. Her energy and enthusiasm in this area, as well as her wealth of experience both from England and within this region, has seen many changes in the day programs for adults with disabilities. This program has recently been extended from one day a week to three and under Lorraine’s guidance aims to provide a varied, stimulating and creative selection of activities and outings for clients to enjoy. Already, the senior clients at Glasshouse Country Care have been treated to a performance of a musical play, called Rainbow Connection. The play, a musical sci-fi fantasy, was written by Glenda, who faithfully included favourite characters and music chosen by the clients. As well as rehearsing moves, lines and songs, great fun was had by all during a visit to Caloundra to choose the costumes. The performance was warmly received and the senior clients are eagerly awaiting the next one.
A scene from Rainbow Connection (left to right) – Mr Spock (Stanley), Princess Leah (Narelle), Lady Amnesia (Lorraine), Lady Anastasia (Bernadette), Lady Valentina (Christine), Captain Kirk (Gary). Last week, the clients visited Underwater World, where kisses from the gentle seals were accepted with wonder and joy and the antics of the otters had laughter sounding all around their enclosure. Coming attractions which Lorraine has planned include making mosaics representing the glorious views of Glasshouse Mountains, a camping day in the grounds with outdoor activities, a nature walk and barbecue and, of course, getting everyone’s individual scrap book up to date. Thanks, Lorraine, for joining the team.
Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Contributed by Ian McCarron

Beerwah CWA Contributed by Del Davis, secretary Looking for a new outlet? Would you like to make new friends, help your local community, learn new skills and much more? The Beerwah CWA branch is endeavouring to commence a night monthly meeting in their hall at Simpson Street, Beerwah. An open meeting will be held Wednesday, July 11 at 7.30pm to see if it can get off the ground. It is felt that women who work or are tied up with children
during the day may like to hear what makes QCWA tick over. Come along to hear our guest speaker for the evening. As Mrs Ruth Fairfax, the first state president of the association, said over 90 years ago, the association brings happiness to many lives, usefulness to others and above all has taught so many of us the true meaning of ‘service’, and given us so many opportunities of expressing the meaning of it. This is still relevant today. Please join us for the evening. www.gcnews.com.au
with Lea Parkes Many of you will have seen the Meals 4 U delivery van zipping around the local area but you may not know exactly what a great service they offer. Owners Mike and Dawn prepare and deliver an extensive range of frozen home style meals. One of their clients described Meals 4 U as being like having a 'personal chef' in their own kitchen. And who wouldn’t enjoy coming home to a lovely home style meal that just needs to be heated? While they are located in Turner Park Shopping Centre at Beerwah, their delivery area extends from Redcliffe right across the coast, so if you have someone outside of the area that you help care for this might be a great option for them. They have a fabulous menu which includes plenty of traditional favourites – but you will want to take a look for yourself on their website to see how it works www.meals4U.com.au
After 10 years of running the Garden Terrace Coffee Lounge at Beerwah, Ross and Ann McKenzie know what their customers like and what keeps their regulars coming back time and time again. For me it is the traditional coffee shop offerings that we know and love. When I was a kid my nanna and I used to go out in the holidays to a big shopping centre and if it was lunch time, I would get a milkshake and a toasted open sandwich which always included pineapple and melted cheese, or if it was morning tea I would get two pikelets with jam and cream and maybe a lovely lime soft drink! And while the Terrace Cafe has plenty of modern tasty sweet treats, great burgers, steak sandwiches, friendly staff and a nice quiet spot out on the deck – I still like that I can choose something that reminds me of the joy of the past! Cafe is open from 8.00am – 2.45pm Monday – Friday and 8.00am – 1.00pm on Saturday.

Curves Beerwah is rewarding generous locals who bring a bag of non-perishable groceries in this month for their annual Food Drive. If they decide to join on the day they will receive a 50% discount. Throughout the month of July, Curves Beerwah will collect non-perishable items for The Salvation Army. The goal, according to Linda of Curves Beerwah, is for the community to come together to help people in need. Each year, Curves clubs worldwide collectively donate millions of kilos of food to feed the hungry. Over the past six years, a total of nearly 54 million kilograms of food has been collected and distributed to local communities all over the world through the Curves Food Drive. “We hope women in the Beerwah area will come together and participate in this initiative,” added Linda. “Even if you’re not thinking about joining a gym, you can still drop off your donations. There are so many people here in our own community who need our help right now.” If you would like to know more give Linda a call on 5494 0455 or call in to 12/21 Peachester Road, Beerwah.

Living Well Music Today
With our regular columnist, local musician Dr Michael Whiticker
The art of improvisation You often hear even the most talented musicians say ‘I can’t improvise’. What they probably mean is that they are not really interested or don’t need to extend their skills to include improvisation. On the one hand you can’t blame them. Written music of an extraordinary standard is readily available; whether it be a guitar solo by Dowland or a piano sonata by Beethoven. Why bother trying to be creative when it is unlikely to sound as good? However, composers have always been improvisers. In fact in Bach or Mozart’s day it was highly revered - there were even shows where competing composers tried to outdo each other in the quality of their invention. And the music of Bach’s day included a partly improvised part - that of the continuo, which plays from a shorthand notation called figured bass. My own training as a musician was as a composer. It began with a four year Conservatorium degree, and went on to the doctoral level, and although I was interested in improvisation it wasn’t encouraged. Composition in the 80s was composers writing music on manuscript and performers taking that music and performing it. Somehow composers were to make a living from commissions and / or royalties. And in the 70s, 80s and 90s, to some degree, a few did, along with a growing group of performers who realised that they were missing out on some of the reward and so began to write their own music to perform alongside the classical canon that was their ‘bread and butter’. In the 21st Century, making a living as a composer in the ‘classic’ field is extremely hard unless the composer writes in a very conservative style. In truth it was always that way as Bach and Mozart could attest. The composers who were most successful during their lifetime were the virtuoso performers such as Liszt and Paganini who attracted audiences by dint of their showmanship and charisma. Often their own works were opportunities for technical bravura which grew out of their extended improvisations. For these next few columns I’d like to consider the art of improvisation, how it might be thought of as fast composition, and how it is different for each musical genre. I began this column touching on so called ‘classical composition’ and next month I’ll look at jazz and world music. Do have a creative musical month!

Out and About Holiday Fun The kids at Mooloolah Vacation Care last week enjoyed an Olympic themed cooking activity, where the results of their efforts were definitely very patriotic in their theme. On Friday, Pat and Emily Featherby were also spotted on their school holidays out at Club Glasshouse’s Friday morning bingo. The locals enjoyed their company – although they may not have been so happy that Emily seemed to be the winner of the day!

Choosing a Puppy
Re-Last week’s letter in GCNews (June 27) from a lady who had bought a couple of puppies from a pet shop, that grew up to have problems. As a local pet shop owner this was a concern. Where ever you buy your puppy, there is no lifetime guarantee. The pup may be healthy at the time of a vet check and develop problems later in life. When considering a puppy, research the breeds you are interested in, as some breeds are prone to problems more than others. To say pet shops sell problem dogs is very damaging to honest pet shop owners who do their best to sell quality pets. There are a lot of great pet shops out there, you can also buy a pup from a breeder or go to a refuge and give a dog a home, either way there is no lifetime guarantee on any animal. Make sure you take your pup to the vet for regular check-ups and vaccinations. Andree Dixon, Animal House Pet & Aquarium
Re: Letter from Kerstin Shepherd re Pet Shop Puppies
There are always plenty of lovely dogs and cats of all ages looking for a home at Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge at Sippy Creek or at any RSPCA Refuge. They all come desexed and vaccinated and are a lot cheaper than you would pay from a pet shop. I suggest you take a look at the website Oscarslaw.org to see what horrors happen at puppy farms, which is where a lot of pet shops source their poor animals from. There is no need to seek out a breeder to have a wonderful, loyal, loving pet either, when there are already many dogs waiting to be adopted in the refuges. Our family have two great dogs which we adopted from the Animal Welfare League on the Gold Coast and neither have had any medical or behavioural problems, and fitted straight into our family. D. Woods Glass House Mountains
Above and beyond
As we are soon to be leaving Landsborough after living here for several years there are a few local businesses that I have to praise before leaving. All the following people go above and beyond in their field, but above all give the best customer service on the Sunshine Coast hands down. Greg at Landsborough tyre service has the ability to recognise your voice over the phone after not having talked to him for 12 months. He is definitely a mechanic that I would trust 100 per cent. Brian from Landsborough Plumbing Supplies is as down to earth as is possible, will call a spade a spade and looks after the best interest of the client. I would highly recommend him. Gwen from Landsborough Barbers not only does a great job with the hair, she is also great for a chat, not to mention she's a Bulldogs supporter. Lastly Wilf from the video store will always give the heads up on the good and bad in the movie world and has an amazing selection of dvd's. Landsborough is very lucky to have these businesses. Joseph Devine Landsborough

JULY 4 2012
From Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Phone: 5420 8987 It's been an interesting change of perspective as I drive around Glasshouse country as your councillor. I am enjoying the greater sense of connection now that I have the real opportunity to act on issues rather than just list them. Council has adopted a portfolio system in order to provide a greater focus on the region’s economic development. My designated role for the whole Sunshine Coast region is in Transport Strategy. This will mean a greater focus on transport corridors, sustainable transport options, and transport planning for the whole Sunshine Coast region while fulfilling my responsibilities to represent Division 1. It is a great opportunity to focus on the future of transport, particularly in Glasshouse country where our population continues to grow and our need for diverse transport options increases. Trail network Infrastructure upgrades are underway on the Mooloolah Valley Dularcha Rail Trail - Ewen Maddock Dam Circuit Link. New signage is being installed, reminding motorists to drive cautiously as there are many tracks and trails in the area used by horse riders, cyclists and walkers. Gravel will be applied to 150m of the trail and improved drainage is also part of the remediation work. All the work is expected to be finished at the end of June if weather permits. Right back @ u Council is calling for expressions of interest for both mentoring artists and emerging artists living with a disability to participate in the ‘Right back @ u’ community project. Contact Caloundra Regional Gallery on 5420 8299 or email artgallery@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for more information. Secret Sunshine Coast places Thank you for your positive response to my last column and all of your wonderful suggestions on great places to visit that only locals seem to know about. The walking tracks around the base of Mt Tibrogargan have come up as a special place to enjoy the beauty of the mountain and the natural, peaceful surrounds. Keep sending your suggestions in as we might all find out something new about the region. Contact me about Division 1 activities by calling the office on 5420 8987 or email rick.baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and don’t forget to mention your favourite secret spot on the Sunshine Coast.
From Jenny McKay Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Mobile: 0409 450 726 Road causeway concerns Recently I met with residents about their concerns with the road causeways at Shady Lane and Harris Road Mooloolah. Residents shared concerns that the pipes under this long existing infrastructure are inadequate to carry the volume of water coming down from mountains during the recent rain periods. Residents highlighted the fact that they have been land-locked during increasing periods of time during the last deluge. Council has committed to working with the residents to look for solutions. We have written to the State Member Mark McArdle seeking his support and are also looking to engage the assistance of the Hon Andrew Powell MP Member for Glass House Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection with the environmental studies that are required to be undertaken before any work can commence in the river beds. These studies are necessary before we could even consider doing the required infrastructure upgrades. In the past, these studies have been known to take in excess of two years to finalise. Walking path We are planning to hold an information session with local residents to update them on work council staff has done to endeavour to provide a walking path from the Haven on the Eudlo Mooloolah Road to connect the footpath to the Mooloolah township. I will advise the timing of the onsite meeting in an upcoming column for residents to understand the complexities of such a construction. Town Plan I have sourced a number of enquiries lately regarding opportunities to increase the central business district of Mooloolah. This will be addressed in the town planning process currently being undertaken by council taking into consideration information currently available for the proposed rail upgrade. It has now become clear that planning for rail towns such as Mooloolah cannot be placed on hold awaiting government financial commitment, thus I look forward to working with the business community and the residents in the coming weeks to address the planning needs for the Mooloolah CBD. Well done! Congratulations to Sunshine Coast Radio Controlled Car Club in winning the opportunity to hold the 2013 Queensland Championships at the Landsborough Sport and Recreation Grounds. This is a huge coup for the club and will be a great economic driver. www.gcnews.com.au

2011 / 2012
Tax changes taking effect from July 1
By Adrian Raftery, author of ‘101 Ways to Save Money on Your Tax - Legally!’ 2012-13 edition 1. Income tax cut Hooray! For the first time in two years we are getting a tax cut from July 1. But don’t go popping the champagne corks just yet, as the maximum tax cut of $600 (mostly going to low income earners) will barely offset the expected price rises expected with the introduction of the new carbon tax. Those earning above $80,000 will get a paltry $3 tax cut … for the whole year! 2. Immediate write-off for small business assets Small businesses will be eligible to immediately write-off new business assets that cost less than $6,500. Businesses will also be able to claim the first $5,000 on any new vehicles purchased after July 1. 3. Super contribution limits halved for those over 50 The concessional contribution limit for those over age 50 will be halved to $25,000 in line with everyone else. The government has also deferred the indexation of the cap until at least 2014–15, when it is expected to rise to $30,000. In that financial year the concessional contributions cap increases to $55,000 for those over 50 who have less than $500,000 in super. 4. Super contribution tax double for high income earners The tax on concessional superannuation contributions doubles - from 15 per cent to 30
per cent – on contributions made by individuals who earn more than $300,000. 5. Super co-contribution halved The government is halving the super cocontribution by only matching 50 per cent of personal super contributions, up to a further $500. The upper threshold is also being reduced from $61,920 to $46,920. 6. $500 superannuation bonus The government will provide a contribution of up to $500 annually into the superannuation account of workers on adjusted taxable incomes of up to $37,000. This will ensure that no tax is paid on superannuation guarantee contributions and is to be offered in addition to the co-contribution scheme. From July 1 2012, employers must include the date that they intend on paying accrued superannuation on payslips provided to employees. From July 1 2013, employers must also advise of the date that they last paid contributions on behalf of employees. 7. Means test for private health insurance rebates From July 1, the 30 per cent rebate on private health insurance premiums is going to gradually phase out for those who earn over $84,000 (singles) or $168,000 (couples). It will be eliminated altogether for those earning above $130,000 (singles) or $260,000 (couples).

Carry back tax losses Companies will be allowed to carry-back tax losses up to $1 million (subject to its franking account balance) against tax paid in the 2011/12 tax year. This will increase to two years from 2013–14. 10. Reporting contractor payments From July 1 2012, businesses in the building and construction industry need to report the total payments they make to each contractor for building and construction services each year.

Top business tips for a happier new financial year Take action now to head off the headaches and gain the rewards. With winter’s onset, Australian business owners and managers are staying in and gearing up for what can be an arduous task – getting on top of their paperwork for end of financial year (EOFY). EOFY is not nearly as much fun as having a night out, but arming yourself with knowledge to meet compliance obligations can put you on the path to prosperity. We’re about to hit one of the most compliance-heavy periods in some years, and organising your EOFY business financials early can hold a greater benefit over the long term. Now is an opportunity for business owners to reflect on the success of their growth strategy, review the current financial year and proactively approach the next. MYOB CEO Tim Reed says, “being slugged with a tax bill is a stress that business owners can do without. Those who take action now to review their systems, processes and software are ready to hit the ground running at 1 July. This can put a
business strides ahead of its competition. “For example, a business that pays building and construction contractors should start capturing those contractor payments as of next month. Otherwise they’ll be playing serious catch up when the first report is due next year. “When viewed as an opportunity to give your finances, operations and strategy a tune-up, the end of a financial year can be a launch pad to a happy and prosperous new year. If a healthy bottom line and a positive pace of growth are at the top of your wish-list, simple steps today can make a big difference to tomorrow,” he said.
MYOB’s top 10 tips for a happier new financial year: 1. Get professional help to know your business better Don't wait to get to know your business better. If cash flow, taxation and forecasting aren’t your areas of expertise, contact an accountant with experience in your industry to help. They can
immediately identify potential EOFY issues, such as incorrect transaction dates, foreign exchange rates or inventory anomalies, and these aspects can be monitored throughout the year. 2. Compare the current financial year against the previous year Compare your 2011 tax year against previous years to pinpoint the positive and negative trends. When were your peak periods? How well did each of your products/services perform? Talk to a professional who can help identify which ones deliver the healthiest returns, re-evaluate your margins and loan terms, help you with managing cash flow, inventory and staying on top of debtors, and the like. They can even perform business benchmarking activities, comparing your performance against similar businesses. 3. Familiarise yourself with key compliance changes for the new financial year Did you know the flood levy will no longer apply after July 1 and tax-free thresholds are changing?

TAX TIME Are your systems prepared for the introduction of the carbon tax? If you operate a business in the building and construction sector, are your systems prepared for the annual reporting of contractor payments in 2013? Check out http:// myob.com.au/2012 for everything you need to know about EOFY compliance changes. 4. Ensure your BAS and superannuation guarantee charge statements are lodged and paid by July 28 Be sure to pay your super guarantee contributions for the fourth quarter of 2012 by July 28, 2012. If you or your clients miss this deadline, you must submit a Superannuation Guarantee charge statement to the ATO. 5. Take advantage of deductions, write-offs and rebates before June 30 Take action to scrap worthless stock, plant and equipment before June 30 by reviewing your asset register (which keeps track of your company equipment including items purchased, sold or disposed of). Consider holding off buying business assets until the new financial year, because the instant asset write-off increases from $1,000 to $6,500 from July 1, 2012. Conversely, there are several government initiatives valid only until the end of the financial year that allows business owners to write-off purchases for business. Maximise these in the current financial year by purchasing any such assets before the end of June.
2011 / 2012 Contact your accountant to discuss what is available to you based on your business. 6. Write off bad debts before June 30 If any debts have been outstanding for more than 12 months and/or are considered nonrecoverable, you may be able to claim a GST credit and write them off as an expense. Be sure to look into this now. 7. Back up your data to ensure compliance with record-keeping requirements An ATO requirement is for businesses to keep detailed business records for a minimum of five years. Make sure you have a secure data back-up system. If you don’t use accounting software currently, consider starting the new year on a product like MYOB LiveAccounts that automatically does the back up for you. 8. Get on top of your books and diarise dates to review them From now on, lock in time to update your data entry and records at least once a week. Compile as much information as you can in preparation for updating your financial records. This includes accounts payable, receivables, payroll and inventory. Identifying errors is much easier over a short time period than after 12 months’ time has passed, so perhaps review your books every two months rather than every quarter. Mistakes can be picked up sooner, potentially saving you money in the long term.
9. Keep your business house in order Your transition to a happier financial year will be more seamless if your financials are well organised and compliant. Up-to-date accounting software, such as MYOB LiveAccounts or AccountRight 2011, acts like a virtual assistant by automating many aspects of this. It also gives you a comprehensive snapshot of your business that’s available at a glance at any time. With ordered paperwork, you can avoid last-minute hiccups and nasty surprises. 10. Invest time working on, your business rather than in, your business Take the time to formulate a refreshed business strategy for FY2012 / 2013. It should contain everything from a SWOT analysis to competitor intelligence, a marketing plan and specific, measurable goals. These targets may be financial, such as increasing lead conversion by X per cent, reaching a revenue target at a specific time and halving operational costs. Or, they may be operational, such as expanding your product line, moving into another geographic region and upskilling staff. Consider involving team members in building the strategy to help improve their buy-in. A study was done at the University of Miami based on 2,000 people over three years and found that ‘grateful people tend to be the happiest’. Dr Michael McCullough, professor of psychology, said that “with gratitude, there is virtually no downside and that there is a major upside: most grateful people have low rates of depression and negative moods - but high self-esteem.” Dr McCullough said also that “people can learn to be grateful.” One study he worked on asked respondents to make daily notes on four or five things for which they were thankful, even if it was just a sunny day. The results: ‘In just two to three weeks they reported being happier’. People who are grateful are also more likely to be resilient, and they seem to have an easier time overcoming obstacles. Psalm 147:7 (NIV) says ‘Sing to the LORD with grateful praise’. People have sometimes called

Christians who love to clap and sing ‘the happy clappers’. After reading this study about being grateful I would encourage everyone to be more grateful. Yes there is always something to whinge about, but there is also so much to be grateful about. I challenge you to go one day, or dare I say, one week without complaining! If every day we were to be more grateful to God and other people we would be happier and healthier! So with Gratitude: Thankyou Lord the air we breathe here on the sunshine coast is so fresh and clean! God bless

Stamp duty concession reinstated REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said both policies would be warmly welcomed by everyone involved in the real estate profession. “The PPR stamp duty concession was removed at a very inopportune time last year when the Queensland economy was still struggling to recover from our summer of natural disasters,” he said. “Its reinstatement for homes bought as a principal place of residence from July 1 will save buyers thousands but will also re-establish Queensland as one of Australia’s lowest jurisdictions for stamp duty on residential property.
“If you add this to our affordable property prices, compared to other capital cities, then we are likely to start seeing a return of interstate migrants which will be of benefit to our broader economy.” Mr Kardash said it was important that the new State Government had kept its promise to address the increasing cost of living pressures on Queenslanders. The Bill also passed the first stage of the legal process to remove sustainability declarations from the selling process. These will remain in force until the Bill has received final assent in coming weeks.

The reinstatement of the Principal Place of Residence (PPR) stamp duty concession and the removal of sustainability declarations will be enormously beneficial to home owners and real estate professionals, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The Treasury (Cost of Living) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2012 was passed by the Queensland parliament last month and will see home buyers save up to $7,000 in stamp duty from July 1. The Bill will also result in sustainability declarations being removed from the selling process within coming weeks.
How to find a lender that ‘fits’ As banks and other home loan providers continue to look for ways to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market, it’s more important than ever to ensure you’re talking with a lender who is the best ‘fit’ for your personal situation. According to Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison, lenders are regularly finetuning their lending policies and criteria to establish a market niche and attract certain types of borrowers. “In a very cluttered and highly competitive market such as home lending, it makes sense for the lenders to try to stand out

Tax time tips to achieve your property dreams sooner Property owners and those looking to buy property are encouraged to take steps now to maximise their tax refund, according to Australia’s largest independently-operated mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice. Local Mortgage Choice franchise owner Robert Harney said reassessing financial aspirations and identifying ways to make the most of any tax benefits can help investors achieve their property dreams sooner. “Knowing what expenses can be claimed over the short and long term can make a big difference to a tax refund. In preparation for lodging a tax return, now is a good time for property investors to organise any receipts and statements that relate to their rental property or properties.” “Keep in mind investors may be able to claim for a range of expenses, including agents’ fees, advertising, body corporate fees, capital expenses, building maintenance and repairs, cleaning, insurances, home loan fees and interest payments, as well as council and water rates, and the cost of travel to and from the property for inspections." “One aspect that property investors often overlook when lodging their tax return is depreciation deductions, which applies to new and existing residential properties and in most cases owners of an investment property or properties are likely to be able to claim something.” “Depreciation on the original costs of construction can be claimed on any residential property built after July 17, 1985. However, it is always a good idea to check with the Australian Taxation Office or a depreciation specialist as there may be exceptions to this rule. Claims can also be made for items that are falling in value over time, such as fixtures and fittings, floor coverings, appliances and built-in wardrobes. Owners in strata buildings should keep in mind they may be able to claim depreciation on a portion of the value of items and equipment in common areas, such as carpets and furniture in foyer areas.” Tax time also presents opportunities for homeowners to achieve their property dreams sooner, Robert said. "Those who receive a healthy tax refund may decide to deposit the extra cash directly into their mortgage as a lump sum payment. “Making extra repayments into your home loan can speed up the accumulation of equity and help repay the loan sooner by reducing the length of the loan term and interest payable over the life of the loan.” For more information on tax related topics, visit the Australian Taxation Office’s website, www.ato.gov.au/property.

It’s a game that has featured in the Olympics for as long as the event itself, making its debut at the very first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, and still ranks as one of the most popular spectator sports today. Aussies love their tennis, and it’s no wonder. Locally, keen tennis players are spoilt for choice, with two local clubs offering keen amateurs the chance to participate in regular club competitions, or just a social hit with friends. Just recently, the Glenview Mooloolah Club celebrated its 85th birthday, with part of the celebrations focusing on one of our very own local tennis champs, Fay Colthorpe (nee Muller) who lived in Mooloolah in the 1940’s, and played at Wimbledon for four years in the early 1950’s. Fay and her partner Daphne Fancutt (nee Seeney) were runners-up in the Ladies Doubles in 1956 Wimbledon Championships. Each week, the club offers social tennis, with Ladies on Tuesday mornings from 8.00am -10.00am, and the Laidback Ladies each Wednesday night from 6.30pm - 8.30pm. Adult social is played each Thursday night from 7.00pm. Everyone’s welcome to come along to any of these sessions. Members during the day are free with non-members paying $5.00 and night fees are members $2.00 and nonmembers $5.00. The courts are available for hire nearly every night except Mondays during the adult competition, Thursday because of social tennis and Saturday mornings when the juniors are playing fixtures. If you wish to hire the courts please contact Ray on 0438 291 577, Candace on 0409 512 840 or Jenny on 0408 726 736. Down the road, the Landsborough Tennis Club provides junior, senior and veterans teams in the Sunshine Coast competitions. The junior social competition has been going for close to 20 years and is played every Friday evening (during the season) from 3.30pm until around 7.30pm, involving 50 local children ranging in age from six to 18. We have two seasons each year running for 12 to 14 weeks each. It caters for the beginners to advanced juniors and there is always room for new players. It is one of the cheapest and safest social sports for juniors on the coast and it doesn’t impact on a family’s weekend, being a Friday afternoon/ evening comp. On Tuesday mornings many local ladies gather at the courts for a fun morning of social tennis and on Wednesday nights its mixed social tennis where everyone comes and enjoys a hit. There are four courts available for hire through the Landsborough IGA for a small fee or if you become a member they can be used for free provided there are no other activities happening. Coaching at the club can be arranged by contacting Katya Spierling on 5494 9464 or 0417 625 194.

Beerwah Bulldogs hosted Bribie Island and Browns Plains on Saturday which promised to be three competitive games of footy. The women took on Browns Plains looking to climb the ladder and get a chance of playing finals footy and after winning the game 48-24 are now only one point behind the 4th placed team. The Under 18’s once again competed in the first half against Bribie, as they do most weeks, but the much bigger visiting team skipped away in the second stanza to win 42-8. A Grade knew that Bribie would come ready to play looking for their first win of the season and the boys came out on fire to lead 16-0 early and the held the Warrigals for the rest of the game to Win 30-10. Next Saturday the women get their chance to continue to push for a semi final spot against Aspley 3.00pm at Beerwah while the A Grade and Under 18 have the BYE and then take on Caloundra at Beerwah on Saturday, July 14. Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by Dennis Hume Donated Bowls: Many sets of bowls have been donated to the Bowls Club over the last 50 years. Most of these sets are no longer suitable for modern day bowls requirements. Any past member, or family of a past member, can ask for them to be returned. This is because storage has become a problem and they must be returned or disposed of (possibly to charities?). Please leave a message with name and a contact number with the Club on 5496 9311 if you are interested. All unclaimed bowls at July 31, 2012 will be cleared out from the Club. Saturday Social Bowls - will also, until further notice, start at 12.30pm. Wednesday and Thursday bowls were abandoned because of rain (remember how cold and wet it was, how soon we forget when the sun comes out). Saturday, June 30 - 10 members turned up to hone their skills in preparation for the pennants season. Two games of triples and one game of fours was played. Thanks also to Kate White for helping out for the afternoon. The results are as follows. In the fours, Jack Timm, Noel Feruglio, Kate White, and Brian Saunders def John McSwain, Maurie Dawes, Bob Coxon, and Joseph Albrecht. In the triples, Daryll Kuul, Col Allen, and Mike Moore def Richard Kossen, Bray Howard, and Rob Warnest. Richard White, Rob Scullion, and Jim Tatum def Troy German, Brian Fogarty, and Barry Richardson.
Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club Contributed by Judy Walker Friday, June 29 winners were Mark Everest and John Esdaile, 2nd James Sammon and Frank Kelly and 3rd Ede Clark and Horst Jonscher. Saturday, June 30 raffle winners were Rob Hall and Bob Patten. No prizes but some good bowls played.

Backyard Chooks!
Cold weather and school holidays equates to warm freshly cooked breakfasts in the morning and the most loved breakfasts in my household are eggs in any form. Whether it be scrambled with fresh herbs from the garden, poached, fried or boiled, they are such great little packages of protein that help kick-start any day. The only problem is that my three hens (A.K.A: The Girls) went into moult and have stopped laying. Keeping chooks is relatively simple and not only do they provide lovely fresh eggs, but they are a great pet for kids. Here are some brief points to keep chooks in the backyard. Enclosure The ideal chook enclosure must firstly provide good weather protection and prevent predators from entering. Our hen’s house is a simple wooden structure with doors at the back to enable us to collect the eggs without going into the pen. To stop our hens becoming a fox’s dinner, we buried the chicken wire below the ground around the bottom, as well as fully enclosing the sides and top with wire. We started out with grass on the ground of our pen, but within a week, this ended up as dirt and in wet weather, a rather smelly quagmire. Therefore, for the current pen, we put down some leftover large square pavers so that in wet weather, The Girls have somewhere out of the mud and it can be hosed down to keep it clean. Feeding Yes, the first thing my beloved hens head for when I let them out is my veggie patch. Initially, years ago, I had believed that they would be great at eating all the caterpillars, and whilst this is in fact true, they tend not to just eat the caterpillar, but all the leaves too. They can easily be trained to go back into their pens by using the same command whilst putting down some of their favourite feed when locking them up. I personally laughed when my husband told me this, but funnily enough, I now believe it’s only my neighbours who are laughing as I tell my chooks ‘Go to bed’ whilst putting them back in their pen….but they do it! As well as fresh greens and scraps from the garden, I feed my girls a premixed grain daily. Obviously, fresh water is also a must and we regularly need to clean out their water bowl as they tend to scratch all sorts of things into it. As a little extra, I sometimes grow a mixed green crop in one side of their pen which I can lock off, just as a little treat – although it only takes them a day to devour and destroy it. Maintenance Chooks like a fresh bit of straw to lay in, but they do not seem to care whether they sully their beds with excrement, so I try to change their bedding material weekly. This is of benefit to my veggies too as I spread this around my plants each week. As you can see, there is little work for such great rewards. Also, I have since read that I could have saved myself from my egg famine if I had purchased new point of lay pullets between January and April, which would not have gone into moult. I shall have to schedule in a new pullet to add to my flock at the beginning of each year. Finally, I have been writing this whilst it is cold, rainy and miserable outside, but I am looking forward to what is forecast to be a sunny week ahead when this column is printed. So you should be finishing up reading all of the wonderful local Glasshouse Country News and Get Up and Grow so you can go and enjoy gardening in the sunshine. www.gcnews.com.au
More trees please
This Friday, Saturday and Sunday sees the Queensland Garden Expo back again at the Nambour Showgrounds. The annual event has become an iconic event, attracting over 30,000 visitors to see, touch, hear, smell and buy everything and anything about gardening. The event is organised through the Sunshine Coast branch of the Nursery and Garden Industry Queensland (NGIQ) and has been since it began in 1984. Back then, the expo was a half day event with 30 exhibitors, 300 visitors, five workshops and a plant clinic. Now – it’s a massive gardening spectacular featuring hundreds of exhibits, plant displays, workshops, three full days of speaker programs, gourmet cooking demonstrations, floral art and so much more. One local who has been in the thick of organising this year’s expo is Simon Smith from Go Green Rainforest Nursery at Glenview. Simon is the vice-president of the NGIQ Sunshine Coast branch and on the expo organising committee, as well as being an exhibitor and a program presenter. This year, the nursery industry is promoting their ‘More Trees Please’ project as part of a broader Plant/Life Balance program, and Simon is in the thick of it. According to Simon, the ‘More Trees Please’ campaign is aimed at promoting the health and wellbeing benefits of trees in urban areas. “Activities such as National Tree Day have resulted in more trees being planted, however general awareness of the benefits associated with these trees is still lacking, particularly in urban communities,” said Simon. “Trees have multiple benefits for people and the places where we live. “They filter our air, connect us with nature, create pleasant surrounds for recreation and enjoyment, form spaces which are more peaceful, relaxing and stress-free, and cool our suburbs making them much more liveable. “Through the ‘More Trees Please’ initiative, the nursery and garden industry is looking to be proactive and communicate these benefits within the communities in which we all live, work and play,” Simon explained. You can learn more about ‘More Trees Please’ at the garden expo on the weekend. Joining Simon at the WIN Oval speakers stage will be Colin Campbell, Jerry Colby-Williams, Phil Dudman and Costa Georgiadis (from ABC Gardening Australia) – all confessing their love of trees. If you’d like to catch Simon’s talk, he’ll be on-stage on Friday at 1.00pm. Simon will be letting you in on his best six trees to grow in our local area.
