Hi Everyone... I just need to let you all know that from next edition, July 11, our paper has to be with the printer a few hours earlier than has been the case for the last few years. If you are wondering why I am banging on with all this boring talk about printing… it is just a very polite way for me to let you know that if you have something that needs to be in the next edition, then make sure you let us know by Thursday lunchtime or you might just miss out. Apparently I am a bit of a soft touch – on Monday mornings I generally receive a handful of emails opening with, “I know it is way past 12noon Friday, but would you please make an exception for me and slip my very important item in the paper?” Wherever possible I would say yes, but sadly as I don’t have a magic wand I may not be able to make it happen in future! Please note that the Classified deadlines will now be Monday, 10am and the sport will be Monday, 9am.
5 Thursday Cr Jenny McKay will be hosting her monthly Mooloolah breakfast meeting from 7.30am at Kenny’s @Mooloolah, 1 Jones Street, Mooloolah. Free to attend. 5 Thursday BEERWAH & DISTRICT GOLF CLUB SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM $25 9.30AM - 2.00PM

Local News
For Professional Caring Service
Council budget… now for the bad news Sunshine Coast Council’s budget was approved recently, with a range of new spending, projects and initiatives reported in last week’s GC&M News. As always, if there’s more spending, there has to be a way for council to pay for the services... and that’s generally through increases in rates, fees and charges. This budget sees general rates increasing by an average of 3.5%. This includes a $41 increase in the minimum rates to $1,207 per annum and a $10 increase in the standard household rubbish collection fee to $290 per year. Special levies are also increasing with the ones most affecting locals being: • Environment levy to increase from $72 to $74 per rateable property; • Transport levy to increase from $42 to $43; and • Heritage levy to increase from $11 to $12.50. • Montville Beautification levy to increase from a minimum of $258 per applicable property to $264 (with the actual levy increasing from $0.1189 to $0.1219 per dollar of rateable valuation).
In the budget, a set of newly-introduced Non-Principal Place of Residence Transitory Accommodation rating categories is designed to capture revenue from places where people lease the premise for short-term stay accommodation, such as through ‘Air B&B’. Associated with this, council has scrapped the Tourism levy on all commercial properties. However, commercial properties will still contribute to tourism promotion through their general rates. Council sees this as a way of making non-traditional short stay tourism accommodation properties contribute towards the cost of council sponsored tourism activities, promotions and events – which they were previously escaping by not having to pay the commercial property Tourism levy. The bad news for commercial properties is that their general rates will be increasing by a significantly higher percentage to make up for not paying the Tourism levy. As an example, an urban commercial property valued at between $175,000 and $400,000 will see their minimum rate skyrocket from $1,466 to $1,811 – an increase of 23.5%.

A ‘rally’ good time
The dust has now settled and dollars have certainly been raised at this year’s Great Endeavour Rally that concluded in Yamba on June 23. The eight-day ‘southern safari’ adventure took in some rough terrain for the 31 competing cars and 12 support vehicles, but also incredible highlights – all for a fantastic cause. GC&M News caught up with some of our locally supported teams to find out more about this incredible outback adventure. Team Pesky was sponsored by the Landsborough Hotel and consisted of team members George Glendinning (partner of Jo Logan from Landsborough Hotel) and Michael Fahey. George and Michael originally “bonded over beers” at last year’s rally when George was the third member

of another local team, The Cane Toad Cruisers. When the opportunity came up for a ‘co-pilot’ at this year’s rally, George jumped onboard as navigator for Michael’s 1993 FG Ford panel van – a courageous move considering the car was a two-wheel drive automatic – not exactly suited to creek crossings and bush bashing! Regardless of any ‘technical issue’ (the car broke down a few times), the duo had a fantastic time and raised over $7,500. Some of the scenic highlights on the trip included visiting ‘The pub with no beer’, Burren Junction and the Wollomombi Falls, however the real highlights were the comradery and high-jinx of the competitors, and the local hospitality of the locations visited. Michael says that competing in the rally was always on his bucket list and although it was tough on both the car and the team, it was a brilliant experience – made all the more worthwhile because of its support of the Endeavour Foundation. All up, the teams raised over $320,000.

Photography by Red Hot Shotz “The stars at night and the sunrises in the morning were spectacular but it was the pranks and shenanigans with the other teams along with the great social atmosphere that made it really fun,” says Michael. While Team Pesky made it almost to the end unaided (a tow truck assisted with the final 15km), Michael and George are pleased that they almost doubled last year’s fundraising efforts and plans are already being discussed for next year’s fundraising challenge. Local all-girl team Kenny’s Angels also had a brilliant time competing in their first rally and are pleased to report that their purpose-bought vehicle made it through unscathed. The team, consisting of local business women Amanda Smyth (Wild Horse Turf), Susan Ellwood
(Grandview at Fraser), Sonia Heilig (Go Turf) and Michelle Putzolu (Drillsure Geotechnical), were thrilled to have almost cracked the $10,000 fund-raising mark, which well exceeded their initial goal of $3,500. Amanda says that although the rally took in long days over the nearly 600km course it was warm welcomes from the local stops that proved a particular highlight. “We had a brilliant time! The hospitality was incredible – the smaller the town the bigger the welcome which was fantastic,” says Amanda. Some location highlights for Kenny’s Angels included visiting Carinda (the pub was made famous by the David Bowie ‘Let's Dance’ film clip) and enjoying a beautifully prepared wholesome lunch made by the P&C of the local
school that only had a handful of students. Susan from the team then took the ‘Kenny’s Angel-mobile’ to the local school to say hello which was a hit all round. A visit to Collerreina Hall, which involved a makeshift racetrack and some hot rod action for the benefit of an Endeavour kid “whose smile afterwards lit up the world”, was also a special highlight. The girls also had the opportunity to have one of the Endeavour clients ride with them for a day, which involved a lot of karaoke and good fun. Another local entrant this year was the Mount Mellum ‘Canetoad Cruisers’ consisting of Gayle and Nigel Pattinson who, Amanda reported, also achieved a brilliant fundraising amount of around $10,000.

Local CCTV cameras in the spotlight If it’s good enough for Caloundra… At their May 17 ordinary meeting, Sunshine Coast Council voted to approve working cooperatively with the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce to install an integrated closed circuit television (CCTV) monitoring system within the Caloundra CBD. The cameras have been purchased by the Caloundra Chamber through a Federal Government grant… the same funding source that the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce used in 2015 to purchase and install CCTV cameras in Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House Mountains. However, at that time Sunshine Coast Council decided to wipe their hands of helping the Hinterland Chamber of Commerce. Council flatly refused to allow any cameras to be placed on any public building, infrastructure or place and rejected any requests for partnering in making our towns safer places. But if you’re a larger coastal chamber with more influential members – such as Caloundra – it seems Council has a different approach. Financial assistance can be approved by a simple vote at a council meeting. The inequity of the situation didn’t sit well with the local Councillor Rick Baberowski, and so at the recent June ordinary council meeting, he brought a notified motion to the floor seeking redress. He called for council to investigate the local CCTV situation, giving consideration to the prospect of the potential transfer to council of the CCTV
equipment within Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough. Asked why he brought the issue to a full council meeting, Cr Baberowski explained that it was an issue of fairness and equity. “If council is to consider a CCTV ‘partnership’ for Caloundra then it should also take another look at the CCTV systems installed in our Glasshouse Country townships,” he said. “In essence it needs to be done equitably across the region. The community will remember that the installation of CCTV systems in the Glasshouse Country townships was driven by the same one-off Federal funding offer as now offered to Caloundra (again through its chamber) and both are based on the same argument of improved public safety and crime detection. “My motion requests that council looks at both CCTV projects and what potential agreements are needed that properly take the operations and whole of life costs into account. That may mean some changes to the Glasshouse Country CCTV system already installed, or it may not. “But it does mean council will not just be looking at the Caloundra project but our Glasshouse CCTV systems as well.” The vote was carried in favour of Cr Baberowski, but not unanimously, with Cr Steve Robinson and Mayor Mark Jamieson voting against the idea. A report will now be prepared by council staff and presented to a future meeting on a date to be determined.

New look and feel for Flexilink timetables DENTURE CLINIC New-look timetables have hit the streets for the Conondale to Maleny (via Witta) and Peachester to Beerwah Flexilink services to remind Sunshine Coast Hinterland residents that Flexilink transport services are on-call to get you from A to B. Transport Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said council was proud to continue the services that have been running for eight years. “The same great services will remain for the community, with the timetables having a new look to recognise that the services are delivered with the support of the Sunshine Coast Council Transport Levy,” Cr Baberowski said. “Our monthly passenger numbers on the Conondale to Maleny Flexilink are excellent. We see an average of 54 unique passengers making around 285 passenger trips across the service route, and there’s an average of 13 new passengers trying it each month. “Of the regular passengers, many use the service to connect with buses from Maleny to Landsborough or Nambour, and some use it for shopping and recreation purposes in Maleny. “We would like to see more passengers on the Peachester to Beerwah Flexilink service, with an average of nine unique passengers making around 22 passenger trips a month. “The beauty of these services is that council only pays for the service if passengers are on board, resulting in a low-cost service.” Booking is a simple phone call, the drivers are friendly and polite and the services are affordable

Drought Angels need your support
The Grigor family and the team at Landsborough and Glass House Mountains IGA are throwing their support behind the not for profit organisation Drought Angels during the month of July. Customers are encouraged to purchase a $2 ‘Raindrop’ token available instore to help support the vital work of the organisation that supports Aussie farmers in need. With over 51% of Queensland drought declared, support for Aussie farmers battling these conditions is needed more than ever. While the south east coast may be lucky enough to receive consistent rain, unfortunately many farmers out west are struggling every day with their livelihood and feeding their families. Felicity Grigor is encouraging customers to support this worthwhile cause. “If we want to continue eating Australian grown and produced food, then we need to continue supporting our Aussie farmers!” she says. Proceeds raised go directly towards supplying farming communities with food, pre-paid visas, services and much more. To find out more about Drought Angels visit their website or Facebook page.

Leading authors headline Celebration of Books Maleny Australia’s top authors are making their way to Maleny for this year’s Celebration of Books. This boutique festival, held from July 13-15, embraces and delights those who love books. In its seventh year, the festival brings together authors, illustrators and poets for performances, conversations, workshops and displays, ensuring Maleny lives up to its book town reputation. Trent Dalton, the award-winning journalist with The Australian, headlines the lineup. He’s recently been making a splash with his debut novel ‘Boy Swallows Universe’. Set in Brisbane in the mid1980s, it explores the complex and at times harrowing world of young Eli Bell. A lost father, mute brother, mother in jail, heroin-dealing stepfather and criminal babysitter round out the cast in this both heartbreakingly desperate and
beautifully joyous coming-of-age story. And critics are already singing its praises: “Trent Dalton has poured his soul into this book and you can feel the passion. It’s a mix of ferocity and tenderness, childhood dreaming and adult fears… It might very well be the next Aussie classic.” (Goodreads). Trent will be in Maleny on Sunday July 15, joining ABC Radio’s Kate Evans, Stella Prize shortlisted author Mirandi Riwoe, and fellow Brisbane author Sally Piper for the festival’s signature event, Sunday Morning Talking Writing. Festival goers will be treated to a vibrant and candid discussion between these three leading Australian authors and the ups and downs of writing, where they find inspiration and what they find most challenging. This ticketed event is being held at the Maleny Community Centre, with morning tea served from 10am. On Friday July 13, Bri Lee, author of the powerful new memoir ‘Eggshell Skull’, will be in conversation with Kate Evans at the festival’s launch event. Bri will talk about her book and its account of her journey through the Australian legal system: from her first day of work at the Queensland District Court as a fresh-faced judge’s associate, to being the complainant in her own case two years later. With the “media buzz” around this exciting new author, the Friday night conversation is not to be missed. Enthusiastic discussion is also expected when the Celebration of Books Maleny’s Big Book Club gathers on Saturday July 14 to talk about this year’s pick, the multi-award winning ‘The Trauma Cleaner’ by Australian/American author Sarah Krasnostein. It is an outstanding biography of Sandra Pankhurst, a woman with an incredible story of survival, who finds compassion for her
clients amid their world of trauma and decay. Organising committee member Claire Booth, says the book provides scope for booklovers and readers to flex their critical muscles: “We’re really excited by this year’s choice. It will give our book-clubbers something to really sink their teeth into, and it’s so beautifully written.” To find a complete picture about all of the festival’s events, head over to https:// celebrationofbooksmaleny.com.

Have you considered cosmetic tattooing? Have you heard of Eyeliner tattooing? Here at The Cosmetic Tattoo Company, eyeliner tattooing is a popular treatment for our clients, and most popular for our women aged 50-60. This is because as we get older it becomes more difficult to perfect our eyeliner ourselves due to lack of vision or unsteady hands. However, most women want to look their best always, and if their makeup is done for them every morning,
they can just wake up and go … not to mention travel anywhere and not have to pack any makeup at all. Eyeliner tattooing can sound like a scary process. Most women picture the most terrifying experience, then double it. But we assure you – it’s not the case. Any procedure performed here at the salon is talked through with the client every step of the way. Colour and shape are decided before the process begins so there are absolutely no surprises. We also use two different types of numbing cream to accommodate everyone’s pain threshold. Eyeliner tattooing can range greatly in size, shape and even colour. A lash line fill is our most popular service as it just fills the spaces between your lashes like your mascara would when you wear it. It is an extremely subtle line and suitable for all skin types. For the more adventurous, you can go thicker and with a wing if you like. It is entirely up to what you feel the most comfortable wearing and what looks the most natural to you. Of course, we will guide you with our professional opinion to help find the perfect shape. We offer free consultations where we will go over how the procedure works, what shapes and colours would best suit your face, and what you
can expect during and after the procedure. No two people are the same, and we like to ensure every client will always leave with something that is age appropriate and stunning. If you would like to find out more, please visit the website www.thecosmetictattoocompany.com or call the salon on 0409 961 924 to book your free consultation.

Munuyar, David Miller
A diamond in the rough By Arika Skrandies We all know what a diamond is and if you don’t – you have been living under a rock. What about a Diamond Tree? Don’t worry you are not alone. There is a shroud of mystery surrounding the exact purpose of a Diamond Tree, also known as carved trees. What is known is that they bring Aboriginal history into life. One of the Dreamtime Nobody knows this more than Munuyar, David art exhibition pieces Miller, an award-winning modern contemporary Aboriginal artist who says, “Just everything is connected. It’s all connections between country, people, everything… animals, it is all connected to the trees. “I’d seen a photo of them years ago in a book. One of my friends at Uni was doing a story about them and I loved them. There are different carvings in them.” Carved trees embrace carved ornate symbolic motifs, intricate swirls, circles, zigzags or diamonds. “When I paint they just come to me,” David smiles. David was born and raised in Queensland, a descendant of both the Bundjalung Tribe and the Yaegal people of New South Wales. “I was born in Brisbane... in a hospital, I couldn’t walk then. I was a newborn,” he teases. One of eight siblings and full of life, David grew up
freely, exploring on the shores of Redcliffe. Later he attended Maleny State High School and left in Year 10. “Back then Maleny Primary School and High School were combined… I didn’t last long there. “I am known as the black sheep of the family..., I would do my own thing.” For a self-confessed black sheep, rather ironically David’s spirit guide is the Yowie. “It is the law maker. If you see him once it is a warning. If you see him twice that’s it!” he laughs. It wasn’t until 1998 at the age of 40 that David first found art: “I had never painted before, I painted houses that was about all. It just started with a free art class and I thought how easy it was.” David later graduated from the institute of Geelong Waurn Ponds and, according to him, this is his greatest achievement. “I have a spiritual style, it just flows – it just happens.” During his studies David also met the well-known Aboriginal artist Jandamarra Cadd and proclaims to have taught him how to stretch canvas. David travels often in search of originality. “Anywhere over the border of New South Wales. Out bush camping, ten or twelve times a year, fossicking, metal detecting, camping… I visit a few friends. If a Diamond Tree is there, I will find it.” David is very spiritual and often finds himself lost in time. “I like to walk around out at night... sometimes getting only four hours of sleep a night. Either the
nights are too short, or I sleep too fast,” he laughs. David also captures his deep connections to his totems and spirits within his artwork. “My totems are the emus, kangaroos, eagles, goannas, possums, white pointer sharks, dolphins and always my Quinkan spirits,” he says. Quinkans are spirits that inhabit the landscape, “They are with me all the time. I like to paint my Quinkan spirits… they live in the trees and the shadows and rock crevices – big tall skinny ones and they just come out.” David has had two great influences in his life, Father Donald from Albury, England, his greatest teacher, and Della, his Aunty from Diamond Tree country New South Wales. “Della – she had fourteen kids and she just accepted me all the time when I went down there. No one knew me, and she just claimed me straight away. She understood me… I am a free spirit. I used to phone her three or four times a week until she died,” he says, eyes watering. “She taught me not to be cranky with everyone and except people as they are.” David is much like the revered Diamond Trees. A little rough around the edges but, with a little consideration, a true gem.

Now in its seventh year, the homegrown, three-day celebration of community connectedness features music, dancing, comedy, poetry, workshops and activities. This family friendly event has a relaxed intimate vibe, and between the concerts, cabaret, open mic sessions, food and market stalls, licensed bar and children’s venue there will be something for everyone. With the official program launched at Maleny Lane last Friday, festival organisers have spent countless hours bringing together another awesome lineup of creative, diverse and inspiring acts. Local and Brisbane bands and performers include The Hillbilly Goats, Bearfoot, The Fergies, Rob Longstaff, Barleyshakes, Dub Zoo and Mufassa. Festival goers can come for one day or evening or for the full three days – it all kicks off on the Friday afternoon with an Indigenous Opening Ceremony and continues all weekend, culminating on Sunday with a Bush Dance as well as a Finale Concert that features many acts from over the weekend. Music Today “I am a hole in a flute”
I often come across people who seem to have a very special talent in their chosen field. It may be that they work with wood, words or even that they simply display a willingness to connect and through that give what might appear to be more than they get back. They provide without necessarily expecting reward and through their activity enrich the lives of all people in our community. What is it they have found that has enabled them to be so good at what they do? Others can toil night and day, pushing themselves to be better in their chosen career, and seem to be just marking time. And here is an uncomplicated individual who appears to have found their calling. Eckhart Tolle talks of the importance of being present, or giving all of your attention to what you are doing and through that, if you are simply enjoying what you are doing, without necessarily wanting to achieve or become anything through that activity, extraordinary things are possible. He suggests that if you are truly present a wave of creative empowerment can flow into what you do, and your activity might expand beyond what you had initially imagined. Musicians, writers, scientists, teachers and business leaders he cites as examples of people whose sphere of influence may appear small, but at some point, if they are bringing an intensity into what they do, might lift their activity to a new plane. But, he also states the person mustn’t let the achievement go to their head. They are still an ordinary human being, it’s just what comes through them into this world that can be extraordinary. It is something they share with all human beings. We can all access extraordinary achievement he says. Whether we will or won’t, we don’t know. The 14th century poet and Sufi master Hafiz, expresses this truth beautifully, “I am a hole in a flute that the Christ’s breath moves through. Listen to the music.” So, whether you are one of these people, or are not, it matters little in the big scheme of things. But I do know that if you open your heart, anything is possible. Have a beautiful month. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Tax Time Clothing claims this tax time
A focus on work-related clothing and laundry expenses this tax time will see the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) more closely examine taxpayers whose clothing claims don’t suit them. “Last year around six million people claimed work-related clothing and laundry expenses, with total claims adding up to nearly $1.8 billion. While many of these claims will be legitimate, we don’t think that half of all taxpayers would have been required to wear uniforms, protective clothing, or occupation-specific clothing,” Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said. With clothing claims up nearly 20% over the last five years, the ATO believes a lot of taxpayers are either making mistakes or deliberately over-claiming. Common mistakes include people claiming ineligible clothing, claiming for something without having spent the money, and not being able to explain the basis for how the claim was calculated. “Around a quarter of all clothing and laundry claims were exactly $150, which is the threshold that requires taxpayers to keep detailed records. We are concerned that some taxpayers think they are entitled to claim $150 as a ‘standard deduction’ or a ‘safe amount’, even if they don’t meet the clothing and laundry requirements,” Ms Anderson said. “Just to be clear, the $150 limit is there to reduce the record-keeping burden, but it is not an automatic entitlement for everyone. While you don’t need written evidence for claims under $150, you must have spent the money, it must have been for uniform, protective or occupation-specific clothing that you were required to wear to earn your income, and you must be able to show us how you calculated your claim.” Ms Anderson said the ATO also has conventional clothing in its sights this year. “Many taxpayers do wear uniforms, occupation-specific or protective clothing and have legitimate claims. However, far too many are claiming for normal clothing, such as a suit or black pants. Some people think they can claim normal clothes because their boss told them to wear a certain colour, or items from the latest fashion clothing line. Others think they can claim normal clothes because they bought them just to wear to work. “Unfortunately they are wrong - you can’t claim a deduction for normal clothing, even if your employer requires you to wear it, or you only wear it to work.”
Tax time tips for small business
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is helping small businesses get it right this tax time. Assistant Commissioner Mathew Umina says that, “Small businesses in Australia contribute more than $380 billion to the economy each year and are an essential driver of economic growth. "That is why the ATO is committed to supporting small businesses and making it as easy as possible for them to understand and meet their tax obligations at tax time.’’ Mr Umina has some tips to help small business in the lead up to and during tax time: 1. Get your records ready – one way to have a stress-free tax time is to keep up-to-date records, to find out what records are needed for tax returns visit ato.gov.au/taxreturnrecords or use our record keeping evaluation tool to evaluate how well a small business is keeping business records. 2. Check your deductions – most expenses incurred in running a business can be claimed as a deduction. This includes operating expenses, business travel expenses, home based business costs and costs of employing people. When working out what business deductions to claim it's important to remember the three golden rules. One – the money must have been spent for your business not yourself, two – if you use something for business and private purposes, you can only claim the portion that is related to your business, and three – you need a record to prove it. 3. Find out if changes apply to you – There are a few changes that apply from July 1, and an easy way to stay up to date on changes is by subscribing to the ato.gov.au/sbnews, receive what small businesses need to know, when they need to know it. There are a number of services where small business operators can chat to the ATO, one-on-one such as their Live chat, After-hours call back service, and their Business Assistance Program offering tailored support over 12 months. Visit ato.gov.au/sbsupport for an overview of the tools, services and assistance that is available.
New financial year resolutions Happy New Financial Year! Rather than cringing at tax time, let’s celebrate by setting some meaningful financial goals, which can help you get ahead, and live the life you want to lead. 1) Assess Your Debt: Is debt weighing you down? How are your credit card bills? If you are drowning in interest repayments, now’s a good time to work out how to wade through your debts. Your Smartline Adviser can help you sort out the pros and cons of consolidating your debts, so you feel lighter this new financial year.
2) Set up good systems: Whether you are self-employed, a business owner or on a salary, having good financial systems means you are prepared for the next tax time. It also helps you assess your income and expenses, to identify what could be saved. Consider using a program like MYOB or Excel to log invoices and receipts. 3) Get money smart: Start the new financial year by improving your financial literacy. The Smartline blog has a wealth of information about managing your finances. ASIC’s MoneySmart also has
great information for getting your finances in order. The more you know about your finances, the easier it is to feel in control. 4) Set (realistic) financial goals: Set aside time to talk with your partner, or other family members about what you really want financially. If you are in the market for a new home, now can be a great time to start planning how you are going to make it happen. Book a chat with your Smartline Adviser, and use our simple budget planner. Maybe your financial goal is to minimise debts, save more, and
minimise big expenses and small ongoing costs, like television subscriptions. Whatever your financial goal is, write it down, and talk to people who can support you to realise it, like your Personal Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison.

TALKING TAX How do I lodge my tax return? Most taxpayers go to an accountant to ensure the return is prepared correctly and that the maximum is claimed to ensure that the best possible tax refund is issued from the ATO. The ATO is checking more information than ever before, please make sure all receipts/invoices are kept and all log books completed accurately. When is my tax return due for lodgement? - If you visited a registered tax agent last year you will be on their ATO lodgement list. In most cases you will have an extension period to lodge your 2017/18 tax return. Lodgement should be by March 18, 2019. - If this is the first time using an agent, please visit us by the 31st October to ensure you can be added to our ATO lodgement list to receive the additional time to lodge. - If you lodge your own return, the ATO must receive the return by the 31st October. What should I bring to my appointment? • You should bring your Payment Summaries; • The amount of Interest earned from banks on any savings during the year; • Dividend Statements, buy/sell details of shares or land and buildings; • Any receipts/invoices for work related expenses. • Fees for the Preparation of last year’s return; • Rental Property Income & Expenses incurred during the year;
• Donations made to charities (this does not include ticket purchases) or school building funds; • Income Protection Insurance amounts paid during the year. • Please bring in phone bills, electricity accounts, etc to appointments. Remember it is better to have more information than not and we can go through this to ensure correct claims will be made. Motor Vehicle Claim – Bulky Work Tools Can only be claimed where ALL of the following conditions are satisfied: - The equipment is required for the employee to carry our their duties on that day - It must be essential to transport the equipment to and from work (not just personal choice or convenience) - The equipment is sufficiently bulky and/or heavy making it impractical to transport other than by own vehicle - There is no reasonably secure storage area provided by the employer. The ATO are phoning employers and checking this. Self Education Costs Expenses will not be deductible if the course is designed to enable you to obtain new employment or start up a new income-earning activity. Superannuation Employer Super Contributions are 9.5% for the 2019 financial year.
The concessional contributions cap is $25,000 for all age groups for 2018/19. (This includes the 9.5% SG, salary sacrifice amounts, member contributions). I employ staff, what should I do at the end of June? - Ensure you provide your employees with their Payment Summary. You have until the 14th August to provide the ATO with the Annual PAYG Payment Summary Statement. - Check your classification with Workcover Qld to ensure that the staff wages are allocated correctly. - Minimum Wages increase from the pay period that starts on the 1st July. You need to check your employees’ minimum entitlements to make sure you’re meeting your obligations – even if you’re covered by an agreement or pay above the award wages. You can check with fairwork.gov.au to check the A-Z Modern Awards to ensure you are meeting your obligations. At the Fairwork website you can also check on Minimum working conditions, Apprentices & Trainees, Notice Periods, Holiday & Leave calculations. - Make sure your software is up to date with the latest tax tables. Building & Construction Industry The “Taxable Payments Annual Report” is due at the ATO by the 28th August if you lodge your BAS on a quarterly basis.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team @ Hinterland Accounting Services for further information. Ph: 5439 0188
Things you may not know Taxable Payment Reporting System Extended From July 1, 2018, courier and cleaning businesses will also need to start collecting information to report to the ATO on a taxable payment annual report which will be due August 2019. Businesses in the building and construction industry already need to lodge annual taxable payment reports with the 2018 report due by August 14, 2018. $20,000 immediate write-off The $20,000 immediate write-off has been extended to 30 June 2019. It is important to check with your accountant before buying assets just to take up this concession as it may not be beneficial to your business. Single Touch Payroll Businesses with over 20 employees need to ensure that they are ready for single touch payroll by July 1, 2018. You will now need to report payments such as wages, PAYG withholding and super information to the ATO when you pay your employees and not just at the end of the financial year. Employers with 19 or less may need to start reporting from July 1, 2019, depending on legislation. Super Guarantee Amnesty From May 24, 2018 to May 23, 2019 employers have a one off opportunity to self-correct past super guarantee non-compliance without penalty. This means if you haven’t paid all super for employees (including directors) prior to April 1, 2018 by the due date, you can pay now without penalty. Employers who are not up to date and do not come forward during the amnesty may face higher penalties in the future. The amnesty does not apply for SGC Obligations arising after April 1, 2018. Please give the friendly team at Range Accounting a call today to arrange an appointment.

You Said It Thumbs up for Subway
Landsborough State School would like to extend a massive thank you to the Subway Glenview team for coming along and providing yummy Subway meal deals to students and families at our sports day on Friday June 22. Casey Landsborough State School P&C President
It’s simply littering
Some real estate agents drop their leaflets off in our letterbox, despite the fact that we have a ‘No Junk Mail’ sign on it. About 18 months ago I emailed the offending agencies asking them to desist and I attached the link directing them to the relevant state legislation which prohibits this behaviour. Nearly all of the agencies I contacted about this no longer leave their leaflets in our letterbox. However, agents from one Beerwah office persist in depositing their unwanted propaganda in our letterbox. A little while ago, I phoned their office number, and the staff member who answered the phone took a note of my complaint and said the behaviour would stop. Recently, I found another of this real estate’s leaflets in my letterbox. I phoned the offending agent. He said he knew the relevant legislation. I cannot understand that if he knew the legislation, why he and other agents in his office continue to litter letterboxes around Beerwah. I've resolved to lodge a formal complaint with the relevant state government organisation. Peter Slade Beerwah
Why the sign?
I'm just wondering why there is a police sign saying there is a police camera on Bald Knob Rd. It is a dangerous road, I agree, but really, you are hard up getting over 60kph on those bends and the majority of that road. Surely the priorities for speed cameras should be along busier roads and thoroughfares to other towns, e.g. roads like Commissioners Flat Rd or Old Gympie Rd just to name a couple. Cars and bikes speed along these roads constantly. KJ Beerwah
Is this the norm?
After working at a local dental practice, that has changed ownership, for four years on and off, I along with a colleague who had worked there for over fourteen years, was surprised to be advised by text message that we could no longer be offered any further shifts.
CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
The text message was sent to us while we were at work, and advised that we would need to hand our keys in at the end of the day. I have contacted both the new owners and the former owners to find out why this was happening? I was told that they couldn’t tell me why, I have made several attempts to get an explanation but to no avail. I was surprised that the new owners or management team were not capable of terminating our employment face to face. I really don’t know how we have got to this point, but I feel it is extremely disappointing and disrespectful. I would like to know if this is the way people are terminated from their employment, and am wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Is communicating face to face no longer a common courtesy afforded to employees? I would also like to thank all the people I have met during my time working at the practice and for their support at this time, it means a lot. Vicki van der Meer Glass House Mountains
The Coast or local?
Recently I organised an International Riley Car Rally in Caloundra (Rileys are an English classic car). It involved a huge amount of work, held over a five day period in Caloundra. I needed to get several trophies made, and brochures etc, printed. In the past, I have headed to the Coast to do business but decided to check what was available locally, and Rod at TFM Awards in Pine Camp Road, Beerwah was brilliant and was able to produce several stunning etched glass trophies at very short notice. For my printing requirements, Beerwah Print were excellent and produced my requirements in a professional and timely fashion. Both companies are to be commended on excellent and personal service – thank you. Wendy Lonie Maleny
Everyone for golf
The Division 5 budget for Maleny announced by Cr Jenny McKay in GC&M News, June 27 edition includes an unspecified amount to bring tiny Cooke Park by the bus stop up to scratch, the sole concession to outdoor recreation facilities suited to the whole Maleny community, young and old, fit and frail. By contrast, the budget includes a generous allocation of $225,000 for the second stage of the Maleny Golf Course i.e. the second nine holes (of which three are already operational) to bring the course up to 18 holes. The outstanding six holes are planned for FY2021-23, raising questions about the use to which the $225,000 will be put in FY 2018-19. According to information downloaded from its website, the golf club is currently operating at a ‘marginal loss’ and is ‘grant dependent’ to help meet fixed costs of $280,000 p.a. to maintain the existing 12 holes – a situation it expects to continue unless it can grow its income substantially by 2021.

The District Park on the Northern Precinct, designated as an ‘Ecological Parkland’ in the Precinct Master Plan, became official on 29th June when the Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) of which it forms a part was ‘commenced’. We look forward to confirmation from Sunshine Coast Council that funding for the park is included in the infrastructure budget and that planning will start quickly. It’s pathetic
A somewhat distasteful skirmish has been going on for months between council officers and a local Kenilworth trader. The popular business owner was advised late last year that she had to remove her four hanging baskets from out the front of her shop or hand over an up-front payment of $1,000 plus an annual fee of $600 – for the 'privilege' of having four hanging baskets to beautify the streetscape outside her shop. The businesses on either side of her were confronted about the same issue – one handed over the cash and the other simply chose to take their hanging baskets down. Standing her ground, the owner of the fashion shop declared to council that the fees were exorbitant and she would not be handing over a penny. Council officers consequently confiscated (she says 'stole') her hanging baskets and have slapped her with a $640 fine for disobeying a council direction. In defiance she refused to pay the fine, has been taken to court by council where she pleaded not guilty, and is now going on trial. Earlier this year I visited Yungaburra on the Atherton Tablelands. A town not much bigger than Kenilworth, almost every business had hanging baskets out the front of their premises, mainly flowering impatiens in virtually every colour. I inquired about the situation Yungaburra on the Atherton with council and discovered that not Tablelands only are the local council fully supportive of the hanging baskets, there are absolutely no fees or charges expected in any form. What a contrast with our council! The owner has contacted Cr Rogerson and Mayor Mark Jamieson for support, however the councillor refuses to get involved and the mayor has offered no return correspondence, which is pathetic. It is surely past time for an overhaul of the behaviour and practices of this council. Failing that is there any way we can bring forward the next council election? Jon Woodlands Cambroon

What's in the Spotlight A healthy, smart, creative region Council’s $864 million budget builds on the strong foundations put in place over the past six years. Our council will continue to deliver the full range of services so our Sunshine Coast remains the place we all love – for just over $1 extra a week for most ratepayers.
At Home in my Neighbourhood Would you like to connect with your neighbours, organise gatherings or a project? We're looking for “Community Connectors” to help us roll out our “At Home in my Neighbourhood” program. Attend information sessions during July to nd out how you can get involved. Details via our website.
National Tree Day 2018 Take part in Australia’s biggest tree planting initiative on National Tree Day, July 29. Join in local activities, connect with nature and help increase habitat for our local wildlife. Free community events will be held at Pelican Waters and Coolum Beach. Details and registration via council's events webiste.
Have your say on the Draft Arts Plans The Sunshine Coast’s rst Arts Plan is now available to review and provide comment on. The draft plan is designed to stimulate the local arts sector and create opportunities for artists, arts practitioners, and arts organisations. Visit our website to review the draft plan and have your say.
Pay early for the on-time discount Rates notices will soon be arriving, pay by August 17 to receive the on-time payment discount. View payment options on your rates notice or register for MyCouncil to view your notices and check your balance online.
Draft Integrated Transport Strategy Council is actively listening to community views about current transport system issues facing Sunshine Coast residents. The draft integrated transport strategy is now open for community consultation and council is seeking your feedback. Visit our website for details and have your say before July 13.
What’s New for Mobi 2? Sunshine Coast Libraries have introduced a new mobile library timetable, providing more exible, targeted services that meet community demand. There are three new stops at Brightwater, Parklakes in Bli Bli and Meridan Plains and some stops have undergone day and/or time changes to increase customer convenience. Head to library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for details.

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Tower Green wins award
I am seriously delighted to announce that the Beerwah Tower Green Project has won an excellence award for Urban Design at the 2018 Queensland Architecture Awards. I’m told this was against some serious competition so this is a great achievement for our major activity centre of Beerwah. Standby for more as we roll out your master planned works for Turner Park.
Rail upgrade
This is a very long awaited but exciting time for the Sunshine Coast community. The Beerburrum to Nambour Rail duplication (B2N) project means we can at long last look forward to real increased rail services. At the same time we can make informed decisions about how our Glasshouse Country townships can adapt and take the best advantage we can of these very large changes to the road and rail networks. The Queensland Government has including $160.8 million in the next State Budget towards the project, with the Federal Government committed to fund $390 million. Detailed design will commence shortly, with construction to be delivered in stages.
Draft Integrated Transport Strategy
The region is growing, and significant changes in transport technology are coming ready or not. It’s important you have your say in helping to plan our future transport strategy to ultimately spend more time with family and friends, and less time in traffic queues. Let’s take the following example – you live in Glass House, work in Kawana and have two kids, one at day care and the other one at school. It’s a typical arrangement of daily commuting here on the Sunshine Coast, and right now the transport choices are very limited. That needs to change. The Draft Integrated Transport Strategy is an important way to have your say. Take a look at the draft strategy and provide feedback by July 13.
Development update for Landsborough
As I confirmed in the community meeting held on Saturday June 9, this application is now properly made and under assessment by council. On June 8, a comprehensive document (Information Request) containing 24 pages and 54 questions was issued by council. The applicant has three months to respond and, if required, an extension can be provided. The information request made strong statements about the density and design needing to change to be more compliant with the planning scheme and local plan to stay in line with Landsborough’s character.

State Member for Caloundra We are half way through another year but I always look forward to July because it officially marks the opening of the Caloundra Electorate Community Awards. Now in their sixth year, the annual awards are about recognising the best of the best in our community and I am continually inspired by the depth and breadth of talent nominated each year. The 2017 awards was our largest ever showing with more than 200 people filling the CCSA Hall to hear the winners announced for each of the nine award categories, which were selected from a record 77 individual nominations. To cap off the morning’s celebration of outstanding community achievers, a very humble Margaret Smythe received the prestigious Caloundra Hall of Fame Identity award for her tireless work running the CCSA Hall in Caloundra. The local community would know Mrs Smythe through the Hall’s smoothly run community events which have become iconic. After being presented with this award last year Margaret told me: “We are all part of a community. How can we work without everyone working together in the community – it’s what we do here at the Hall.” I believe this sentiment sums up what the awards are really about, shining a light on our community connectedness and how important it is to the fabric of Caloundra. This year’s categories will be: Young Achiever of the Year, Young Sport Achiever of the Year, Sport Achiever of the Year, Environmental Contributor of the Year, Community Volunteer of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Business Achiever of the Year and, of course, Caloundra Hall of Fame Identity. Remember, it isn’t just about the nominees and the winners, but also everyone who takes the time to nominate a group or individual they feel is deserving of adoration and recognition from across the entire electorate. I strongly encourage the community to help recognise businesses, community groups and outstanding individuals doing important work behind the scenes in Caloundra. Nominations close Friday, August 31. Nomination forms can be collected from Mark McArdle’s Electorate Office, or by phoning 5329 4100 or alternatively can be completed online at www. markmcardlemp.com. The awards will be presented on Friday September 14 at the CCSA Hall, 1 Nutley St, Caloundra.
CCTV Notice of Motion
At council’s June Ordinary Meeting, I successfully raised a motion for council to prepare a report regarding CCTV equipment located in the Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough central business districts. In light of the previous decision to conditionally support the application for CCTV in Caloundra, this subsequent motion for the Glasshouse Country townships’ CCTV systems seeks to achieve a consistent and equitable approach across the region. State of Origin My favourite State of Origin memories
By Greg Brown For me, when I was younger State of Origin meant watching the TV coverage with the sound down and listening to Roy Slaven and HG Nelson (John Doyle and Greig Pickhaver) give their satirical comedic commentary on Triple J radio. Their not-sorestrained commentary included giving players nicknames, some of which have become part of the mainstream vernacular. Here’s list of some (suitable to print). Braith Anasta (NSW) – The Car Horn. As the horn doesn't do anything for the car except make noise. Mark Geyer (NSW) – The Tap. He can run hot and cold, i.e. on-field violence. Nathan Hindmarsh (NSW) – Money Box Man. Drawn from the term 'coin slot' to describe a ‘bum crack' or buttock cleavage. Hindmarsh's shorts would often be worn low, with his coin slot exposed. Steve Menzies (NSW) – Methuselah. Menzies played in the New South Wales team until 2006, when he was aged 32 years old. During his final appearances, having played professional rugby league since 1993, Roy and HG made exaggerated references to Menzies' age, such as calling him "Methuselah" and claiming he was around 800 years old and had made 400 origin appearances. Martin Bella (QLD) – The Squirrel Gripper. In reference to Bella gaining a match winning last minute penalty conversion which was awarded because Des Hasler retaliated after Bella had grabbed and squeezed Hasler's testicles during a tackle. Brett Dallas (QLD) – The Grassy Knoll. After the site where US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in the US city of Dallas. Trevor Gillmeister (QLD) – Chock-a-Block Full of Angry Pills. Gillmeister was a player who seemed especially fired up around Origin time, and Roy and HG's explanation for this was the consumption of "angry pills" in the dressing room just before kick-off. Allan Langer (QLD) – Deborah Kerr starred opposite Yul Brynner in the 1956 film The King and I. This nickname is derived from Allan Langer's on-field partnership with Broncos / Maroons five-eighth Wally Lewis, who was nicknamed “The King”. Wendell Sailor (QLD) – Ding Dong Dell. Also, at one time, Roy and HG would shout "HELLO SAILOR!" every time Wendell was passed the ball. Darren Smith (QLD) – Cheese and Chives. In reference to a Smith’s chips flavour. Kerrod Walters (QLD) – Prune. Named because of his squashed facial features. Then there were his brothers Kevin Walters – Cumquat and Steve Walters – Quince, (Sourced from wikipedia.org) completing the fruit trifecta.

Hinterland Kids Ward off winter weight gain
Sea Life – a ‘jawsome’ experience Year 2/3 students from Beerburrum State School recently had their annual junior overnight camp at Sea Life Mooloolaba where students had the chance to get up close to a wide range of sea creatures. They also enjoyed a private seal show, a show and tell session exploring unusual specimens such as saw-fish blades and penguin pelt and the touch pool where everyone was able to touch sea cucumbers and sea stars.

Do your kids tend to want to eat more during the colder months? Are they more reluctant to go outside and play due to shorter daylight hours and the cold? What can we do to make them feel fuller for longer and be more active this winter? Tanzia Butterfield, Paediatric Dietician from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Child Healthy Lifestyle Team, says there are many reasons why a child’s weight may move into the unhealthy weight range, especially during the cooler months. “There are plenty of straightforward tips that may help kids ward off the winter weight gain,” she said. “We are lucky on the Sunshine Coast to have some beautiful mild sunny days, look at how you can adjust exercise routines to reflect the change in season. “For example, make the most of the weekends and get active as a family, head to the beach or explore the national parks. “Diet is also critical to keeping our kids healthy over winter. Include a good quality lean protein or reduced fat dairy with each meal. A homemade chicken pizza on a wholemeal pita pocket with cheese and veggies is a quick and filling family favourite,” she said. “Sneaking in vegetables can be as easy as finely grating squash and mixing it in with the cheese. “During winter, kids often spend more time indoors which can lead to unnecessary grazing or boredom eating. Try and establish structured meal and snack times and don’t allow snacking outside of these times.” If you are concerned about your child’s weight being above the healthy range for their age the Child Healthy Lifestyle Team can help. The team consists of dieticians, physiotherapists and parenting specialists. They work with you and your family, discuss where you feel your family are experiencing difficulties and how they can help you make practical changes. Each situation is unique so they tailor to the needs of each individual family. To make an appointment, contact Child Health Access on 5319 4824. Clinic and home visits can be provided as well as group sessions.

Focus on Food - fuelling young bodies and minds Glass House Early Education Centre strongly believes in promoting healthy food choices. As part of this commitment, the Centre provides a daily menu of wholesome age appropriate food prepared by The Healthy Cooking Company to encourage young children (and their families) to eat well. The Centre has recently added organic baby cereal, fruit and puree to the Nursery Room menu, and the team are excited to be offering a greater selection of ‘finger food’ options for all other age levels. Prepared to suit the specific developmental needs of each different age group, the fresh new finger food options are fuelling young bodies and minds and proving to be a big hit with the kids. Best of all for parents, these wholesome food options are all included in the daily fees. Believing that introducing nutritious meals at an early age will pave the road to a lifetime of healthy food choices, Glass House Early Education Centre follows the philosophy of parent company Queensland Childcare Services which supports the idea that children develop their tastes and attitudes about food and nutrition in their early years. All meals prepared by the Healthy Cooking Company contain minimal sodium and refined sugar and are made without the use of
nuts and eggs to ensure the safety of children who experience severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to these products. The food is preservative free as well as being free from artificial colours and flavours. Meals catered by the Healthy Cooking Company are all planned and prepared by their qualified Chefs and Dietitian using locally sourced fruit and vegetables from local suppliers and meals are based on a balanced wholefood diet. Special dietary or cultural needs are catered for wherever possible and vegetarian, glutenfree and dairy-free alternatives are available. As well as providing meals for the children, Centre families are also able to preorder take home family meals – which has proven to be a popular option. The Healthy Cooking Company was originally established by the founders of Queensland Childcare Services to assist in developing positive eating habits in the children who attended their Centres. Glass House Early Education Centre co-ordinator Ange says that the benefits of healthy food choices are always actively encouraged at the Centre. Team members regularly discuss the importance of healthy eating and the educators are always looking for educational
opportunities to reinforce these values. For example, earlier this year, the Centre welcomed a visit from the Healthy Cooking Company’s nutritionist Jacqueline New who presented a fun and informative workshop entitled ‘The Grain Train’. Other healthy food focussed activities have included taking a ‘paddock to plate’ approach to food, where the children from the school ready room were introduced to three new vegetables each week within a particular type of group (i.e. fruiting vegetables, leafy vegetables, root vegetables etc.). This educational opportunity encouraged children to enjoy various activities to allow them to develop new skills and experiences while highlighting the importance of good nutrition and making positive food choices. As well as being a very interactive way to learn about vegetables, the children developed practical skills - such as how to plant seeds, wash vegetables, how to safely use a knife and how to follow a recipe. In other exciting news, the Centre is about to introduce ‘Sessional care’ as part of changes to the new Childcare Subsidy (CCS). For more details about CCS benefits available through the Centre, contact Ange on 5438 7311, GlassHouse@qccs.com.au or visit 2 Page Street Glass House Mountains – no appointment necessary just drop in.

Noticeboard Soup to the rescue
Contributed by Cathy Schultz The Calvary Lutheran Ladies Fellowship at Glass House recently held a Soup Morning at their local church. The guest speaker was paramedic Allan Ross, Officer in Charge at Beerwah Ambulance Station. In appreciation for his wonderfully informative talk, and with his agreement, the door takings of $400 enabled $200 each to go to the Caloundra Local Ambulance Committee and Life Flight, the helicopter rescue service based at Marcoola. The selection of eight delicious soups, apple slice and custard, tea and coffee proved popular with all those who attended. We thank Glasshouse Country and Maleny News for promoting the event and all those who came. It made for a great morning out.

From the churches The Pursuit of Happiness
“A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Luke 12:15 You won’t find these words in the Australian Financial Review nor in any other magazines for upwardly mobile people. These words are the Word of God, and when God speaks, we take notice. The issue our Lord would have us examine is how we are to live in the land where we have so much. We react with, “I can think of all kinds of things I don’t have”, we object. That’s just the point. We always want more. An endless struggle for more is just as spiritually dangerous as having too much. The temptation in our world is simply plain old fashioned greed – putting created things on a higher pedestal than the Creator himself. Greed is after all, idolatry. We must confess that our culture breeds idolatry. This idolatry is ever so subtle. It would have us believe that we are nobodies without the right house or the right clothes. Bit by bit we are being convinced that genuine happiness can be found in

Jill Schefe Glasshouse Country LutheranChurch things, rather than in God who gave these things. How are we to live in a world where we have so much? We must begin with repentance. We begin by taking honest stock of where we have been and where we are, with this demonic lie of affluence. For all idolatry is sin and there’s only one thing to do with sin. Confess it. Do you want to know the secret to true happiness and fulfilment? Quit looking for something out there somewhere that will give you genuine happiness, look what you already have in Jesus Christ; our identity and fulfilment in Him. By Baptism He has wrapped us up with his death and made us His own. Then, freed from the struggle to acquire, we are truly freed. Free to live contented lives, we therefore faithfully keep on doing what we have been given to do in daily life, knowing that all good things come only from the hand of God. This is where true happiness is found.

This Saturday, July 7, acclaimed local children’s author, editor and publisher Jill Morris is having an Open Day to ‘close down’ her beloved Book Farm and she is giving away thousands of books that have been stored there. Over 20 years between 1989-2009, thousands of children visited Jill at Book Farm at Maleny. Now Jill, at the age of 82, is inviting those ‘children’, many of them now parents, to come back and visit Book Farm and take away free books for their own Jill with students from Chevallum children. in 2007 Jill will be reading stories to visiting children and illustrator Heather Gall will be demonstrating illustrations from her books with Jill, ‘Silly Baby Magpie!’ and ‘Platypus Deep’, two of a few titles for sale in a pop-up bookshop run by Rosetta Books of Maleny at the event. This Friday, July 6, there will also be a special day for teacher librarians and teachers who are invited to visit between 9am and 3pm and choose class sets for their students. There will be books to suit all ages between three and 18, ranging from picture storybooks to illustrated information books, to junior and young adult novels. On Saturday the Maleny Lions Club will be selling sausages and the Maleny CWA will be serving Devonshire Teas. This not to be missed book lover event will be held at the 8 Rees Lane, Reesville from 9am-3pm. Don’t forget to bring a carry bag to take your books home in!

Broad Beans
If you like being disappointed then I suggest you give broad beans a go. I have (multiple times) and then I gave up a long time ago. Broad beans – also known as fava beans – are one of those cool climate favourites which tend to fail more often than not in our subtropics. But if you still want to have go, here are some pointers… but don’t say I didn’t warn you. Plant them asap. They need regular temperatures lower than 20 degrees to do well. Soak the seeds overnight in a little tepid water with a pinch of Epsom salts as this will help their germination. Plant them in the coolest spot in the garden – not in full shade, but maybe an area which is shaded in the afternoon. Prepare your soil the same as you would for normal beans – stay away from high nitrogen manures and fertilisers, add some dolomite and a little potash. They will also need plenty of space – as they grow high and wide. Poke the soaked seeds 5cm deep, 30cm apart and space the rows 60cm apart. Water them in but then don’t water again until they are 5cm high. Don’t fertilise as they grow, just maybe some potash as a side dressing. Broad beans will grow tall in our milder winters, even the ones which are supposed to be dwarf varieties – maybe up to 2m, so you will have to use stakes and string to keep them corralled and upright so they don’t fall over in the winds. When they start to flower, which will take around a month and a half, don’t let them dry out as this will diminish the flower set. Temperatures higher than 25 degrees will also reduce flower set too, which is why broad beans aren’t really suited to our area. All in all, it’ll take about two and a half months til you’ll get any decent sized pods – that’s if you get any at all. But you can pick them smaller and eat them whole, rather than waiting for the pods to develop and eating the large seeds within. One benefit of them is that, being a legume, they do put nitrogen back into the soil, and so are a good preparation for growing leafy greens or corn as the next crop. Once you’ve had enough of moaning about the broad beans, just dig them into the ground so that they then act as a green manure. This is how I If you want to grow something similar which will do well now 'grow' my in our climate, you probably would be better off growing Broad Beans edamame (or soy) beans. You’ll have to wait til next month’s Vegie Notes to find out how to grow them.
Eco-Nursery Native Plants l Fruit Trees Habitat l Education
Contributed by Jennifer Kelly Our June meeting saw some pretty awesome plants benched, and lots of them. We had everything from tiny little Bulbophylum species Sue with her Katy's Gold to big beautiful Cymbidiums. Judges’ Choice for June was one of those Cymbidiums, Katy's Gold 'Welcome Stranger', expertly grown by Sue and Paul Jones. This lovely yellow flowering plant came to Sue from her father's collection around 15 years ago. If you would like to see some of the best flowering orchids around, come along to our next meeting to be held at the RSL Hall in Glass House Mountains on Thursday night July 12 at 7.30pm.
Backyard wildlife
with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery
A group of native plants that just keep giving at this time of year are the Plectranthus. There are many exotic Plectranthus, but South East Queensland is also blessed with many native ones and one particularly outstanding performer in keeping the bees, butterflies and a range of other small nectar and pollen eaters fed is Plectranthus alloplectus. A fantastic groundcover to 50cm, with silvery/grey foliage and purple flower spikes, it flowers throughout the year and, at the moment, is massed with flowers, providing welcome sustenance to so many small critters. Our native Plectranthus thrive in full sun and also dappled shade. One of our other favourites is Plectranthus nidus, with dark green glossy textured leaves and red stems. Its flowers are white and although not as prolific, are also sought after by a range of insects and will take a bit of shade. Native fruits are often harder to find at this time of year, so it’s interesting to see some birds looking to alternative food sources. Earlier this week I watched as two male Satin Bower Birds treated themselves to a salad meal in our front yard with a range of small leafy greens picked, savoured and devoured. There are, however, still some great native fruiting shrubs and trees that are producing a feed such as Native Elderberry, Orange Box Thorn, Plum Myrtles, Pittosporums, Celery Wood and many more. These are very important to all our fruit eating fauna to keep their bellies full and bodies warm in this cool weather. It’s also that time of year when possums need to boost their energy reserves and eat a lot more to keep warm. For them it doesn’t matter if your plants are native or exotic, if it’s edible they’ll give it a go, including your roses! At the end of the day (or night) it’s all about sharing and making sure there’s plenty to go around, luckily nature is abundant when given a chance! It is often suggested by financial planners that you should have many types of investments, such as shares, superannuation and property. However, some experts say that diversification can lead to an average outcome. Research has shown that many successful investors diversify, but cultivate the skills required Ross Rutledge don’t to make better, smarter investing decisions 5499 9525 or and specialise in one niche investment market. Here’s what an expert says about 0447 787 020 diversification: “Many financial advisors recommend that you diversify for your own protection. What they fail to tell you is that it is also for their protection. Since most financial advisors cannot tell you exactly which stock or mutual fund is a great investment, they tell you to buy a bunch of them.” Robert Kiyosaki

Students did their best Contributed by Debbie Roberts Beerburrum State School recently held our annual Athletics Carnival which was well attended by students, parents, family and friends. All students participated well and strove to “Do Their Best”. We saw some great sportsmanship and lots of fun was had by all, especially the parents who competed in the Noodle Horse Relay. The competition was tight with the Norfolk house running out winners by a mere six points. Congratulations go to our age champions, Nineyear-old Mia and Will, 10-year-old Maylen and Jhye, 11-year-old Sharnae and Kahwynn and 12-year-old Baylee and Riley.
Maleny Bowls Club
Glasshouse Country Bowls Club
Contributed by Graeme Glover Monday, monthly pairs: John and Sandra Kapetanic were able to keep things running between the bouts of inclement weather and what a great day it was. A repeated full house is truly fantastic for our club. Thanks to our visiting clubs for your continued support of our main day and the appreciation of us reciprocating on your monthly challenge days. The green played well and local teams of Jim and Joe, as well as Dennis and Tom, took the spoils. The jackpot was won by our bowls friends from Woodford which meant a nice trip with a little cash bonus. Wednesday night bowls – the bad weather was against us and we couldn’t play. Championship games are being attempted in this drizzling weather to meet the schedule, in the end it could be Rain 1 - Bowls 0. We are lucky with our volunteers at the club that go the extra yard with planning and communication so that everyone has the best opportunities to make the most from their involvement in Maleny Bowls Club. Last weekend we hosted a group of young folks from Sunnybank for social bowls, with all positive feedback on the community use of our facilities. If you are thinking of a fun activity for your social or business group you can contact us by visiting our website or app.
Contributed by David Hayes Monday, June 25: Two Bowl Triples, a great turnout for this monthly Monday event with 7 rinks of bowls with players from Woodford, Nambour Heights, Donnybrook, Palmwoods, Kawana and also Peter and Jenni who were on holidays from Tasmania. Winners of the day were Col Allen, Bill Tumbridge and Graham Nicholson with 2 wins + 15 margin. Runners up were Leeds, Digby and Dean Shaw with 2 wins + 5 margin. The lucky draw went to Ann White, Phil Siggers and Rob Scullion. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the day. See you back here on Monday July 23. This month we had Suzi from APIA Insurance who were kind enough to donate us $200 and sponsor the day. Wednesday, June 27: No play because of rain. Saturday social is on this week, arrive 9.30am for a 10am start, the cost is $12.00 and everyone including non-members are welcome. If you have not put your name down and turn up on the day that is also fine. First round of men's pennants is this Saturday, July 7 for those who get selected. There has been a slight delay in teams but they will be up Tuesday afternoon at the latest. The following day, Sunday July 8, Glasshouse will be hosting the Men “A” Singles champion of champions with Dean Shaw to play his first game at 8.30am. Hopefully we'll see a few faces down there supporting him. No coaching or social roll ups this day. It is a while away yet but Wednesday August 1 there will be no social bowls in the morning apart from Ladies pennants who have a home game. Instead we have a tour group coming from New Zealand with about 40 people for a 1pm game. It is not often we get groups in from overseas so I’d hope all those who support Wednesday morning plus others will be there for a game. There will only be so many spots available for a game, (possible no more than about 20-24) - so first in best dressed. A sheet will be up at a later date. After the game there will be sandwiches and scones. Due to this week’s report having to be in to GC&M News early, next week’s report will have results from last weekend.

Contributed by Ken Barker Vince Carbery and Nick Cram played in the handicap doubles event of the RSL Caloundra Classic over the weekend. They won two and lost two of their games to finish fourth. Congratulations to both players for getting out there and mixing it on a strange lawn. At home on Sunday, Donna Manning, Sally Adams, and Kath Smith played a six-ball game with Donna making 9 hoops, Sally 2 and Kath 6. It was a remarkably productive afternoon nonetheless, with most of the world’s problems being solved over a long cup of tea. On Thursday there was no play because of rain. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1pm for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. takes him to the top of a tall building and pushes it off, but someone sees John push him off so he is arrested for making an Obscene Clone Fall.
Is a clone the answer?
A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. ''But why?'' they asked, as they moved off. ''Because,'' he said, ''I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.''
John decides it will be much easier if he had a clone. He has one made and sends him to work so he can stay at home and relax. This backfires when the clone comes home and says he has been fired for making sexual advances to women in the office. John decides he has to get rid of his clone so
ARIES March 21 – April 20 Certainly you will appreciate the first week’s pleasure of July made golden by Venus in Leo! Perhaps both a friend and lover are vying for your attention. As Neptune continues its retrograde motion it would be wise to recall events of last February/March, as some of your health or career matters could be under review or needing attention. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 What a time you will have during the rest of this year, under Uranus, which is commencing its seven year transit through Taurus. This new phase in your life is big news for you! Unexpected events can be expected during this long Uranus transit until 2026. Get comfortable with sudden changes or unstable situations, which are bound to happen! GEMINI May 22 – June 23 With the planet Venus and your ruling planet Mercury both in the sign of Leo, throughout the first week of July you should be crusading for lots of fun! It is likely that you will be tuned in to the subtle undercurrents of your career, or public affairs. The weekend sees a feisty Aries mood, good for a rough and tumble sporting weekend. CANCER June 24 – July 22 Positive portents shower your sign this month! The planets Mercury and Venus, during the first week, are in the sign of Leo and your financial sector. This means a little spending could bring pleasure. It is time to act on news that comes your way. It’s a week to feel in the groove and things will seem to happen just right for you.

LEO July 23 – August 22 An excellent week ahead for you as Venus is in your beautiful sign of Leo. With Mercury also being in your sign all month, this will signal great confidence and pleasure in double measure! There are some people who want to share in your goodies. There may be the need for having an exciting social or party time at home base. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Venus, the planet of love, spends the first week in glamorous Leo with your ruling planet Mercury making enquiries as to how to wisely spend monies on travel or vacations. So, personal optimism is grandiose where your connections with other people are concerned. Make the most of them! They provide a chance to expand horizons. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The month may start with a problem regarding a child or close friend. The responses from your friend may not be what you wanted. This could be over dinner together, and you may feel unappreciated. A job or health situation may draw your attention and you have to bide your time. The weekend enlivens, and begins compatibility. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Both planets in Leo, namely Mercury and Venus, will challenge your professional life. Do you want to try for a bigger promotion and more responsibility, or would you like to spin around towards a more active personal life? Planetary formations only flow now at a frustratingly slow pace. Reaching business decisions can be delayed.

Dental Excel.... Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan Dr Finbarr O’Sullivan (BDS) originally qualified in Liverpool in the UK back in 2005. He gained two years experience with the UK’s National Health Service before spending four years in private practice in Ireland. He has a particular interest in and enthusiasm for dental implants; both to replace missing teeth and
to retain those annoying loose dentures. He believes that the huge leaps in technology during recent times have changed the level of treatment on offer. Finbarr also holds a post graduate certificate in cosmetic restorative dentistry (UK) which gives him the added expertise when restoring a beautiful smile.
Implants
Orthodontics
David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.
Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.
Dentures
Bleaching
Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also dentures that provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.
Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.
Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.
Cosmetic
Payment Plan
For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.
Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
