Hi Everyone Most of you know that I love my job – however there is one element that I really struggle with and that is when you make a mistake, however unintentionally, how it can upset a reader. In our last edition we brought you the story about the new baby Rhino at Australia Zoo. In the story we said that the Southern White Rhino mother Caballe came from Hamilton Zoo in Auckland. During the week we received an email from a Kiwi reader who has politely pointed out to us that Hamilton Zoo is in Hamilton which is a city approximately 130 kilometres outside of Auckland. In our defence we did take the information directly from the press release that Australia Zoo provided, however I would like to apologise for getting it wrong. I also wanted to thank them for pointing out the error as it has given
me the chance to become more familiar with the Rhinos at Hamilton Zoo. (After going to Western Plains Zoo in January and seeing the Rhinos – I have become intrigued by them). If you are a Rhino fan like I am and you would like to find out more about where Cabelle comes from you can check out the Hamilton Zoo’s website http://www. hamiltonzoo.co.nz/ I have to say I while I am disappointed that we have made our Kiwi reader unhappy I am pleased that GCNews have avid reader in New Zealand. Regards,

Bridging cultures
It’s a happy and contented person who can get up every morning and say they enjoy going to work. Sam Okoth, 39, from Glass House Mountains is one of those lucky ones. Sam, along with Nii Armah from Brisbane, are ‘Baala Baajo’ which offers an authentic African cultural experience. Sam was born in Kenya and Nii Armah in Ghana. They are accomplished singers, dancers and musicians who run classes, perform at festivals and community events, conduct interactive team building and corporate events, hold drum making workshops, and are available for weddings, birthday parties and more. Currently they are holding African Drum and Dance classes at Glass House Mountains. Sam had always wanted to live here one day, after learning about Australia in school. “Growing up in Kenya, the things I remember it was kind of hard in a way, if I compare to Australia,” he said. “Australia seems to have everything that works and Kenya didn’t - it’s quite the opposite. But there was more people vibration (in Kenya), more noise. Almost like the people compensated for things not working.” Sam grew up with music in his life, and says it’s predominantly a large part of African Culture. “You still have to go and learn how to do it, so you can pursue it later in life if you want to pass on the tradition,” he said. “I did learn how to do that, but I opted for the western styles just because the African styles were

‘all over’. I thought I’d do something really different.” That ‘something different’ led Sam to learn classical music, jazz and musical theatre but the beat of Africa was louder. “Later of course you find that who you really are is easier than being somebody Sam Okoth else, so I went back to African music. It’s good though, having done what I did, it opens your eyes. It’s almost the same as it takes being out of yourself to find yourself.” “Given the fact that I’ve lived in many countries before coming to Australia it wasn’t too difficult but the prolonged stay in one country has been quite challenging in many aspects where we speak a language but you have to learn a culture. “A culture’s different from a language. The cultural bit is still a bit foreign so that’s been challenging at times, in a good way and in bad ways as well. Sam said the most important thing to understand about learning African music is that it’s like a language and you need to keep trying until you get it. “I really applaud the people of Sunshine Coast especially, for coming out and embracing natural forms of music and other cultures. We’ve taught in other parts of the country but the Sunshine Coast has always embraced other cultures, not just African dance and drumming, and I hope that it continues. I really do.” For more information visit www.baalabaajo.biz

Stars in her eyes by Sandra Conte
Nine-year-old Beerwah resident, Cassi Hilbers, has received a ‘call up’ to Hollywood to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts in July. While the trip needs to be booked and paid for by May 30, without financial support it just won’t happen. Other opportunities for Cassi include working with Seth Riggs, Michael Jackson’s voice coach. In the words of youth today it would be a ‘wicked’ experience. In fact, if you’re familiar with the stage musical ‘Wicked’, Google Cassi’s You tube version of the song entitled ‘Popular’ from the show and you will be watching the same video that brought the Hollywood talent scout knocking on this Beerwah family’s door. With only a small portion of the money for the trip, Cassi’s Mum, Tracey, explains the costs involved - $3,800 for accommodation, Australian Team uniforms, all entry fees etc. for Cassi, $2,800 accommodation and all entry fees for her mum as chaperone plus return airfares of $3,000. “Any help would be appreciated but we wouldn’t want people to think we were waiting for one big sponsor – every little bit however small is appreciated to getting Cassi a step closer,” Tracey explains. For one so young, Cassi is committed to what appears to be her vocation – she sings, dances, acts, plays guitar and piano, has already featured
Cassi Hilbers in a music video, and done voice over work for a tv show. Cassi says it is all part of her simple dream to use her music to help others. “Music makes me feel good so I want to help other people to feel the same way,” she said. If you can assist Cassi with any part of her trip, email cassihilbersmusic@hotmail.com, visit her facebook site or phone her parents’ mobile 0400 666 064.

Residents encouraged to protect forests via SMS
Closedwill and above – Crime StoppersBelow Queensland launch a Plantation Forest Safety campaign this week to encourage residents to help combat illegal and destructive activity in the Beerburrum Plantation Forest.
The Plantation Forest Safety campaign is focused on reducing the growing incidence of arson offences, vehicle dumping, hazardous waste dumping and unlicensed and unregistered road users in the plantation. Crime Stoppers Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Trevor O’Hara, said Glasshouse Country Bowls management growing clean up costs, public safety and good environmental had motivated them to launch the campaign. In 2010 an average of one vehicle per week was dumped and left burning in the plantation. “It costs tens of thousands of dollars each year to clean up forestry related offences including the removal of burnt out vehicles and hazardous waste.” “Anyone caught attempting to set fire to a motor vehicle is liable for imprisonment for up to 14 years,” he said. With 2011 on track to exceed previous years of criminal activity in the forestry plantation Crime Stoppers Queensland is asking residents and commuters who pass by the plantation to be aware, remain cautious, and report any suspicious behaviour. “All information providers can remain anonymous, and we urge people not to place themselves in a compromising or dangerous position to report a crime witnessed in the plantation.” Coast residents can phone 1 800 333 000 or visit www.qld.crimestoppers.com.au to report information about a crime.

Tourism trivia evening tests Hinterland Information Centre Volunteers
Tourism trivia evening Volunteers at four of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Information Centres pitted their wits and knowledge of our beautiful area on Tuesday, April 12. Here in this picture the green shirts of Maleny Information Centre contrast with the blue shirts from the Maleny Hinterland VIC at the Big Barrel. At other tables in the almost capacity filled hall volunteers from the Council run Information Centres at Montville and Glass House add their considerable expertise. To create the tourism trivia questions Bev Hinz, Bridget Sparks and Clare Ryan sourced information from the Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast’s website and maps together with some of their own knowledge. Questions covered the whole Hinterland region from Glasshouse Mountains to the Conondales; they ranged from the history of the area, through to parks and animals, restaurants and wedding venues, art galleries, markets and events. A history lesson was provided on Flagstone Crossing in Maleny by one volunteer, while no one was able to answer the last question about equipment that hikers on the Conondale Great Walk should take with them. Several answers were hotly disputed as was to be expected from this passionate group of volunteers who answer all sorts of questions from our visitors to the centre. To stimulate the brain of our tourism whizzers, Pomodoras provided pizzas, the Maleny Mountain Wines at the Big Barrel the venue, wine for the evening and the prize for the best informed about grapes. Top of the ‘Tourist Teachers’ was Cilla Rose of Maleny Information Centre who won a night away at Blue Summit Cottages. This was the first time that these four Hinterland Information Centres have run a volunteer evening, with Hinterland Tourism Sunshine Coast (HTSC) hosting the fun and frivolity. Bob Morrow and Peter Rogers from HTSC outlined the aim of this evening which was to bring our volunteers from these centres together from time to time as we move forward to promote our beautiful Hinterland to visitors from near and afar.

Precious stories saved
“If only something like that was around when mum was still alive,” or “I wish I could have done this with dad before he died,” those are the type of sentiments Hamish Sewell and Helen Wilkinson, Directors of The Story Project often hear. But for many it isn’t too late to get those recollections, memories and stories preserved forever. And The Story Project wants your story. “People sometimes say ‘I don’t have any great stories’, but everyone has fascinating stories, everyone has amazing stories,” Helen said. The Story Project, a not-for-profit organisation, was inspired by StoryCorps in the US. It records 40 minute conversations between two people, to create a dynamic audio portrait of Australian life. It’s a wonderful opportunity to have a professional recording made, free of charge. Helen and Hamish said the stories could be about anything, local history, timber industry, farming, family stories, tragedies, foster caring, environmental preservation, falling in love and more. “We have no expectations about the kind of stories at all,” Helen said. She also stresses that people will have the final say over what happens to their story. “They have absolute choice over whether it’s made public or not. They can just keep the recording for their personal use, or they can agree to offer the story as part of a collection to the State Library and also to Sunshine Coast Libraries,” she said. “We would really encourage people to share it and make it available because it means that it becomes part of a local history collection,” adds Hamish.
“It’s helping people in the community to understand their common stories and the diversity of stories. It helps bring communities together. And in years to come it will become a valuable part of social research.” While all participants are given plenty of information about what to expect Helen said, “we would strongly suggest people do preparation (about their story) before they come in.” Hamish hopes many people will take advantage of this unique opportunity. “Hearing someone’s voice years and years after they might have passed away or grown older is an incredibly profound experience, especially when it’s a genuine interaction with that person,” he said. Recordings will be made at: • Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, May 6 - 17
•
Caloundra Events Centre, May 26 - 27 and June 6 - 10
•
Eumundi Showgrounds in the historic ‘Sunny Brae’ building, June 15 - 25
Places are limited so don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of history. For bookings and information visit www.thestoryproject.org.au For more information contact Helen on 0410 057 315 or email info@thestoryproject.org.au

The campaign to have the iconic Glass House Mountains included on the National Landscapes list gained further momentum with a recent community forum in Maleny on April 11. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, invited Leanne McLaughlin from Parks Australia to visit the Glass House electorate and provide detailed information to the general public about the inner workings of the National Landscape program and the benefits for the community. “We have been working away at this since February last year so it was great to hear first hand from someone closely involved with the program how inclusion on this list will affect the community and what advantages it will have for local business and industry" he said. The National Landscapes program aims to celebrate and promote unique and iconic Australian landscapes to international travellers. “The Glass House Mountains inclusion in the National Landscapes list would be of great benefit to the region and will certainly encourage tourism development and ensure further funding to protect our local environment,” Mr Powell said. The forum was well attended with a crosssection of interested groups and stakeholders within the region.
Andrew Powell, Leanne McLaughlin Parks Australia, Kel McNamara Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce, Front - John Sereni Tourism Queensland, Suzanne Thompson Representative from Nungeena “We have managed to secure support from many sectors of the community including Australia Zoo, local Council, RDA Sunshine Coast, residents and the local tourism body Sunshine Coast Destination. “The program is on hold for two years which gives us time to get our submission in top shape, and this visit will certainly keep the ball rolling and provide a clear vision for going forward,” Mr Powell said.

From the Schools GCCC College Captains Joshua Davis and Morgan Winlaw at the recent Beerwah ANZAC Day Parade
From Morgan Winlaw Glasshouse Country Christian College correspondent
Tech savvy Gen Y haven’t forgotten the ANZACS In the lead up to ANZAC Day, and on the day itself, I was quite surprised by the views portrayed of young people on this day of remembrance. While scrolling through Facebook on April 25 I found many comments and wall posts from adults depicting a representation of teenagers that suggested that teens would rather drink than honour their country. However, I thought back to the ANZAC march and service held in Beerwah earlier that morning and realised that this generalisation of Gen Y drinking instead of marching was merely just that, a generalisation. Standing there in the rain,
I was joined by many young Australians at this service who were all there to pay their respects to the men and women who have fought and died for our country. When watching the news that evening, there was footage shown of the dawn service at the landing site in Gallipoli. At this birthplace of the ANZAC spirit there were hundreds of young people braving the pre-dawn bitter cold to honour the fallen. Though Gen Y are often seen as more ‘tech savvy’, this doesn’t mean we have forgotten who we are or where we’ve come from. We continue to honour the words ‘Lest we forget’.

ANZAC lessons build tomorrow’s leaders
Tiny tunnels, wet weather and mud galore. These were some of the things that Year 11 students of Glasshouse Country Christian College encountered when they undertook their ANZAC experience at leadership camp recently. The students were put through their paces in a series of arduous courses built around the ANZAC theme at Emu Gully Camp near Helidon. The challenges were designed especially to bring out the best in the students’ characters. Perseverance, courage, mateship and sacrifice are just some of the qualities needed to tackle recreated challenges such as: the Western Front; the Seige of Tobruk; the Bridge over the River Kwai; and the Kokoda Trail. The staff at Emu Gully put each exercise in the context of the actual experiences of the soldiers who had to endure the real thing, and the quality of character that was shown on the battlefields. When the camp was over, the Year 11 students were glad to wash off the mud and get back to their own beds, but the memories, experiences and important lessons learnt will remain with them forever.

Schools in for sun safety at Peachester
Warm water hydrobath, Ears, eyes & nails,
Play time at Peachester State School is about to get a whole lot safer. A new shade shelter will soon be constructed above the school’s playground equipment thanks to Sunshine Coast Council. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the $30,000 project would provide a major sun safety boost for students. “Council recently provided Peachester State School with play equipment because the school community is small and unable to raise the funds necessary to purchase this type of equipment,” she said. “To ensure that children using their new equipment are sun safe I am providing $30,000 of divisional funding for the construction of a shade structure above the school’s new play area.”

Preparations are well under way at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School at Caboolture at the moment. Hundreds of toys, games and craft materials have already been donated, in anticipation of the commencement of ‘Little Saints’ - a playgroup starting next term. Coordinated by St Paul’s church member and mother of three Carissa Klinge, the plan is to run a group that is both stimulating for the children, and a supportive and social environment for their parents. “We have had many parents at the school lament the fact that there is no playgroup for their younger children,” she said. “So we’ve decided to offer one here, under the auspices of the church. We’ll have painting, playdough and other
activities, plus storytime and morning tea. A fence will be put in next week, to keep the children safe in our outside play area, too.” Little Saints will start on May 11, and run every Wednesday during term time from 9.15am until 11.00am, public holidays excluded. Children birth to five are welcome, with accompanying parent or carer. Cost is $3.00 per child, or $5.00 for two or more children. For more information please contact St Paul’s on 5495 5899.

Peachester State School Parents and Citizens President, Louise Lewis said the new shade structure would be a very welcome addition. “This is a fantastic donation from Sunshine Coast Council and on behalf of everyone at Peachester State School I thank Cr Anna Grosskreutz very much for enabling us to protect our students,” she said. “Sun safety is extremely important for children and this shade structure will ensure that our students are sheltered when they’re outside enjoying their new playground equipment. “The structure itself will be a 10m by 10m solid steel structure that will cover the playground and we’re hopeful it will be constructed in the coming weeks.”

Out and About
Continuing the Commemoration Contributed from Glasshouse Country Christian College
Grey skies, drizzling rain and muddy puddles didn’t deter the students, staff and families from Glasshouse Country Christian College participating in this year’s Beerwah ANZAC Day Parade. If anything, the bad weather added to the significance of the ceremony with many people remarking on the terrible conditions the diggers suffered while fighting for their country. One parent said, “the rain didn’t stop our diggers, so it shouldn’t stop us from marching to honour them.” Numbers were down on previous years due to the school holidays and Easter break but it was still a good turnout by the whole community. It was especially heart-warming to see the mix of ages. Seniors, parents, teens, and young children stood respectfully together, united in their desire to honour our brave ANZACs. After the outdoor service, morning tea and a sausage sizzle was put on by the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub Branch inside the building. This turned into a thoroughly enjoyable trip down memory lane with the music group from Glasshouse Country Baptist Church performing old war songs such as ‘Boogie woogie bugle boy’, ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ plus other songs of the era like ‘Don’t sit under the apple tree’ and ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’.
Rebekah Johnson and Courtney Sinclair from GCCC gather for the ANZAC Parade and wreath laying ceremony
Dawn breaks over Beerwah and Landsborough on ANZAC Day By Lea Parkes
This year I attended the Beerwah Dawn Service and Brownie went along to the Landsborough Dawn Service and as we drove along Steve Irwin Way in the dark with the rain coming down we were a little concerned about how the services would go. However it seemed the RSL Sub-branches had done well to organise clear weather, with both the services bringing together plenty of local residents to pay their respects to those that have served their country and sharing in these ceremonies to acknowledge their contribution they have made to our lives today.

Doing Business
Get on track with a Mini Makeover
Jeff and Ann of Beerburrum Service and Muffler are celebrating their mini make-over offer by giving clients the opportunity to win a variety of passes on the Glasshouse Country Festival’s very own steam train. Spend $100.00 on servicing, electronic code scanning, mufflers or general repairs and you will receive one ticket in the multiple draw for the train ride running between Glass House and Landsborough on June 4. Jeff and Ann suggest other retail businesses ‘get on board’ and also offer tickets as prizes for in store promotions which will ensure lots of tickets are up for grabs throughout Glasshouse Country. Jeff, who has been servicing and repairing vehicles in Glasshouse Country for 21 years, would also like customers to know he is ecstatic that the Walker Muffler warehouse in Brisbane is returning to a normal supply level after the recent Brisbane flooding. In fact, with all his regular suppliers like Bendix, Penrite and Monroe back to ‘business as usual’, Jeff can ensure his service is nothing but smooth sailing. Jeff believes the secret to his success is keeping abreast of technology and never cutting corners. While Jeff has a specialty in log book and maintenance servicing, and is a Ford trained A grade mechanic, he is proficient in servicing all makes and models. Ideally located for locals and Brisbane commuters alike, Beerburrum Service and Muffler is only a phone call away on 5496 0300. Phone Jeff or Ann to discuss your options or for an obligation free quote. Ann is a current candidate in the Sunshine Coast Local Government Elections and understandably, if elected, in March 2012 will be throwing herself 100 per cent into that role. Jeff would like to re-assure customers that he will continue ‘business as usual’ with no plans for retirement. So get on board at Beerburrum Service and Muffler for all your vehicle needs and you might receive the added extra of a train ride!

Grantham Feel Good and Support Day
Grantham. As soon as you hear the name you instantly think of the devastating floods in January. The disaster might not be on the front pages anymore but the sad fact remains that Grantham is still on the long, long road to recovery. Dee Stephens, from Mooloolah Hair Studio, knows this only too well as she recently paid the small town a visit. “I’m doing a Leadership program and I wanted to do a community project,” Dee said. “I went for a drive to Grantham and realised they were a little small town on the railway line like us. I was just devastated to see how much they needed. So I thought it would be really good as a community to start getting us all together and show them that we care.” Dee was inspired to hold the Grantham Feel Good and Support Day at the Grantham Community Centre (at the school) on June 4. “We want to pamper them and make them feel good. And we want to let them know we’re supporting them. I want to give the kids some fun,” she said. While she hopes Mooloolah Valley Community will rally with support, she said volunteers and help from anyone, from any areas, are welcome. On the day there will be hair dressers, beauty therapists, masseuses, a barbecue, live music, children’s activities, Harley rides and more. Dee is putting a call out for support. Can you help with any of the following: • Qualified hair dressers to do cutting and styling • Qualified massage and beauty therapists • Coach or mini bus to help transport things • Donations of meat for sausage sizzle • Jumping castle • Clowns • Face painters • Someone to develop photos taken of Harley rides to send to the kids as a gift • Donations of winter things such as jumpers and blankets (preferably new) • Anyone willing to assist with loading and transport • Anyone who wants to help in any capacity. A public meeting is also being organised for interested volunteers to find out more information. Date will be advised in upcoming weeks. In the meantime if you would like to help contact Dee at dee@mooloolahhairstudio.com.au

As part of the Glasshouse Country Festival, GMAN is hosting a number of free Guided Nature Walks. The walking track around Mount Tibrogargan and the adjacent Trachyte walking track have many interesting, and some relatively rare flora in an environment tucked in the shadows of Mt Tibrogargan. If you are interested in one or both of these walks, join a guide who will provide commentary on a variety of points and plants of interest. The tracks are graded easy to moderate and are circuit walks. The walks will suit any adults and children (accompanied by adults) familiar with safe and relatively level bush walking environments. Depending on the numbers of walkers who register, guided walks are planned to be held during the Glasshouse Country Festival. Dates of walks include Monday, June 6, and Wednesday, June 8, 10.00am Mt Tibrogargan Walk (approximately 4 kilometres) 1.00pm Trachyte Circuit Walk (approximately 6.5 kilometres). Following registration, walkers are asked to assemble at the Trachyte Circuit car park which is situated approximately 200 metres west of the Mount Tibrogargan car park. This is reached by entering Barrs Road, off the Steve Irwin Way south of the Glass House Mountains township. For more information on the Trachyte Circuit Walk see www.glasshousecountryfestival.com.au/event-details.aspx?e=41 For more information on the Mt Tibrogargan Walk:www. glasshousecountryfestival.com.au/event-details.aspx?e=39 To register or for further information, please call Cliff 5438 7118.
Glasshouse Country View Club Charge of the Light Horse Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer
The 5th Light Horse Regiment from Maleny, (or at least Roger Landbeck, Patron and Joe Colreavy, Troop Commander) took ‘charge’ of our View Club meeting this month. Roger gave us a fascinating talk on the history of the Australian Light Horse Regiment. This Maleny 5th Light Horse included their greatest victory at Beersheba on October 31, 1917 when 800 men and horses took part in a dawn raid aimed at breaking the Ottoman defensive line that stretched from Gaza on the Mediterranean shore to Beersheba, an important regional centre some 50 kilometers inland. Most Australians probably know the story of Beersheba but we didn’t realise that subsequent to the campaign the soldiers had to shoot their horses, or give them away, as they were not allowed to bring them back to Australia due to cost and quarantine laws. The next View Club meeting will be held on May 18 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. This meeting will include lunch and our speaker will be Dr James Lergeffner who will give us a light hearted talk on ‘Baby Boomers’! Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9094 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. The View Clubs raise funds for, and support, the Smith Family Charity. The Smith Family helps unlock opportunities for disadvantaged Australian children.

Over the next six weeks there will be a new national education campaign for Australians with osteoporosis that aims to get them thinking about their calcium and/or vitamin D intake and encourages them to talk to their doctor about bone health. It is estimated that 2.3 million Australians have osteoporosis. The updated Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Osteoporosis Guidelines recommend that, after addressing dietary, exercise and other lifestyle requirements, treatment may include prescription medicine for osteoporosis, together with calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation if required. The new campaign1, ‘Osteoporosis: Are you getting all 3?’ has been designed to encourage osteoporosis patients to discuss their potential need for calcium and/or vitamin D with their doctor. It includes a website www. all3.com.au and nationwide radio and print media advertising. The launch of the campaign follows a new survey of osteoporosis patients on a prescription medicine, which has found that most patients were aware of the important benefits that calcium 4 and vitamin D4 provide for bone health, but some are unsure how much they need. Full Moon in Scorpio – secrets come to light
Australian Breastfeeding Association member Karen Bauer with children , Thomas and Meg (8 months old) and Ellie (3 years old). This is the theme for this year’s National Mothering Week. The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) has been raising awareness of the importance of mothering through its celebrations, since 1979. ABA’s Sunshine Coast Group believes in helping celebrate mothers and all they do, and in sharing their mothering journeys with other mums. ABA member Karen Bauer says, “one of the things I love about ABA is that we are made up of many different mothers, who all have different experiences. All are welcome at our meetings and each mother’s experience and mothering journey is valued. This mother-to-mother support is at the essence of Australian Breastfeeding Association. Sharing our journeys helps us all to learn from each other.” It sometimes seems like all babies are expected to fit into the same mould and that there is only one ‘right’ way to do things. Most mothers find that they and their babies are different. Realising that their children are individuals and trusting their instincts together with the support of others, especially other mothers, is what gets them through. For further details of get togethers of the Sunshine Coast Group of the Australian Breastfeeding Association, email breastfeedingsunshinecoast@gmail.com or ring 5494 1417. The New Moon in Taurus on Tuesday, May 3 signals an opportunity to begin a new cycle in our relationship with the physical world. It invites us to connect deeply with the land, to appreciate the abundance of Nature, to acknowledge the sacred beauty of the Earth and to embody this by stepping into our protective role as her guardians. Taurus is associated with security in its many forms – emotional, material and financial – and this need for security (or more accurately, the fear of lack of security) can give rise to the sign’s tendency towards possessiveness and material accumulation. This New Moon has some conflicting astrological elements, requiring us to find a balance between impulsive generosity and our sense of perceived lack, and to feel how this all plays into our security needs. Use this lunar month to explore your own security needs and your relationship with abundance. For those of you wanting to put out your New Moon intentions, the period immediately following this New Moon is unsuitable as straight away the Moon goes in to a period known as ‘Void of Course’ which means that nothing will come of anything started at this time, obviously not a good time for New Moon resolutions. This Void of Course period lasts until early the following morning. The Full Moon falls in Scorpio on Tuesday, May 17. This is likely to be a very emotional time when deep and passionate feelings are revealed. This Scorpio Full Moon brings a strong possibility of secret or intensely private matters coming to light, possibly with a sexual content or concerning financial matters. With Mercury, Venus, Mars and the Sun all in Taurus at this Full Moon, patience and focusing on the practical, here-and-now will be the key to maintaining equilibrium when the revelations come. copyright © 2011 Chirone Witsen All rights reserved Astrology courses start in February, contact Chirone for more details on 5494 8852 or see the Stargazer Astrology website www.chironewitsen.com

Contributed by Lisa West, Secretary We are a group who meets at 9.00am every Thursday morning at the Mooloolah Public Hall to encourage members to attain their goal weight. Each meeting we discuss a range of ideas from healthy eating to incorporating more exercise in our daily routine, as well as new items on the market that may help (or hinder) weight reduction. Each year we host a Cuppa for Cancer at the Mooloolah Public Hall, this year it will be on Thursday, May 26, from 10.00am to 12.00noon. Last year we raised $1,200.00 for the Cancer Foundation so we plan to better that figure this year. We are busy organising our usual excellent morning tea, raffles and entertainment provided by the local community. Vicious Vintage will be displaying a fashion parade. A Bowen therapist will be available as well as other products and services. Another popular attraction is our ‘bring and buy’ stall.

Flood funds
Fast food recipe for disaster
I was pleased to announce that $20,039.32 in funds has been allocated to emergency relief organisations locally that are assisting victims of the recent Queensland floods. The funds are allocated to: Caloundra Community Centre ($11,486.85); Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business (Glass House Mountains) ($1467.34); and the Salvation Army (Caloundra)($7085.13). The funds have been made available to three organisations in Fisher to help meet the immediate needs of those affected by the recent flooding. The emergency relief programme assists community organisations that help people with essential items like food, clothing, household and personal items and also with part-payment of bills in times of crises.
FAST food outlet proposed for picturesque Landsborough has the potential to change the township’s social and business dynamics. Multi-national outlet McDonald’s had targeted Landsborough for a new franchise but the effect on the township should be carefully considered before any decision is made. Would the golden arches of McDonald’s sit well in the leafy surrounds of Landsborough? I think we need to understand that not only is the issue of fast food in the spotlight here, but how McDonald’s would impact on local business is also critical. It’s a fact that these multi-national fast food outlets target the young, thus potentially setting in place eating habits which could stay with them all their lives. Obesity amongst our kids is a real issue. It can be argued it’s partly due to a lack of exercise in a technological society but dietary issues are very much a part of the problem too and I can’t see a McDonald’s being part of the solution. The impact of a McDonald’s outlet on local business could also be critical. People who live and work in the township have an interest in the community, do multi-nationals? Individuals run their own businesses and make a contribution not just in monetary terms but also by having input into the area’s development. Any multi-national fast food outlet in the Landsborough region will have an impact on the local economy and it could well be a very negative impact. There is no doubt the dollars will roll in through the front door but they will roll through the back door and out of the local community just as quickly. The proposal to put McDonald’s into Landsborough should be considered very closely and resident’s views on which direction they want their community to take should be taken on board.
Seniors Forum The annual Sunshine Coast Seniors Forum will be held again this year in late July. This is the 11th annual Seniors Forum, and will again include various expert speakers and displays from around 30 organisations that assist seniors in the community. To RSVP for the event or for further details please contact my office on 5444 4888.
Youth Speech Competition A reminder to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 that they can enter a competition to write and video a three minute speech as if it was their first speech to the House of Representatives. The students are asked to write a speech about an issue or issues they think important, whether it’s personal, local, national or even global. They need to video their speech and send in a CD or DVD of their speech, along with a written copy, to the House of Representatives for judging. The winner will receive a cash prize of $250.00 for themselves and $500.00 for their school. The runner up will receive $100.00 for themselves and $250.00 for their school. Both students will be invited to Canberra to attend the opening of a public exhibition on first speeches in Parliament House in July 2011. Details are available on the competition website www.aph.gov.au/myfirstspeech Entries close Thursday, June 16.

Lest we forget
My family is well able to relate to the concept of ‘lest we forget’. We lost two family members in the 1917-1922 war (WW1), and another in the 1939-1945 war (WW2). But I wonder if we are not forgetting those who have not engaged in world-scale conflicts, yet have made important contributions to our community? I am not about to repeat names that have already been mentioned by way of advertising (such as that of the Caloundra RSL), but there are many who have preceded us who deserve our respect on account of the contributions they have made to our community. Far from the least of these would be Bob and Mabel Breton, and Grace Hodgens, of Peachester, who between them were instrumental in establishing and continuing the Peachester Community Hall. John Hodgens and Redge Wilde also contributed to the well-being of the local Peachester community for many years. This is not to disregard the efforts of Helen and Bruce Page who still remain with us. As to Beerwah, what of Col Stokes, Col Pringle, Alistair and Hector Fullerton, et.al? There are so many who have quietly but effectively contributed to the well-being of our local community I am at a loss to list them, and most of them are now passed on. It is all very well to remember those who died in various conflicts, but don’t forget those who stayed at home and worked to make our place better. As an ex-national service man I can well relate to ‘lest we forget’, but please don’t let us forget those others whose quiet efforts have made our country great. John Walton Beerwah

On behalf of the members of the BeerwahPeachester Sub-Branch RSL, I extend a very sincere thank you to all those who attended and took part in both our Anzac Day services recently. It was very heart warming to see that the significance of the day was not overshadowed by events of the past. Again, thank you for your support. John Rouhan, President www.gcnews.com.au
Anzac Day Service
It was wonderful to see so many people attending the Dawn Service at the RSL and the march in Beerwah on Anzac Day, considering the long Easter holiday and showery weather. Thank you to all the ladies for breakfast and morning tea. And we really enjoyed hearing the old songs played by the band. Fay Bahr, Beerwah
RSL Dawn Service
I was astounded at the attendance at the Beerwah RSL Dawn Service. Friends and families came to commemorate and pay their respects to those who gave the supreme sacrifice. A special thanks to the vocalist who added a very poignant message. It has been a long time since I enjoyed a traditional gunfire breakfast so much – like the good old days. Congratulations to the Beerwah RSL and everyone who worked so hard. Talking to people after the breakfast, it was surprising how many who phoned to check times, etc were told there would be no service. Luckily they chose to see for themselves! Congratulations Beerwah RSL and helpers. Elba Campbell, Beerwah

Environment Councillor, Keryn Jones has a very interesting portfolio, I have read the article in a recent GCNews issue. What I would like to know, especially from this Environment Councillor, is just how many occasions this person is out and about within this amalgamated Shire, if this person is out and about, and what is seen or noticed that falls under the Environmental banner? I agree with wheelie bins being left out on roads and footpaths, causing an eyesore and something should be done, however, at the same time council should take note of what they do within this area also. So Councillor Jones, you are apparently worried about the sight of these left out bins, correct? Well now, let me have my say and see where you stand on the following :1. Median strip grass 2. Nature strip grass 3. Walkway and closed road grass that council or private contractors cut. Take Glass House Mountains where traffic turns off the Steve Irwin Way to travel into or out of the village area. These area's are controlled by council, and on occasions they actually mow these strips. However, council never removes the grass and other associated rubbish. It is left to scatter and make its way into your drains and creeks, blocking these when we get our rains, which is quite regularly at the moment. Why council cannot address this matter is beyond me. I am aware the government or semi government bodies are exempt under the act. However, I can afford to purchase a mower with a catcher or pick up my rubbish after mowing, surely our Sunshine Coast Council can make that effort and attempt to assist residents and rate payers keep our area clean, neat and tidy at all times. Oh, you won't have to pay to take your rubbish or green material to the local tip like we do, so that will be a saving of $4.00 to $6.50. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Contributed by Martine Goedhart
I would like to print some testimonials from people who joined a Toastmasters club and liked to share their experience with us. Toastmasters International is well known for its educational programs. The manual speeches given at each meeting certainly offer one of the best speakers training methods around. But the contests offer an even better opportunity to fine tune and polish that favourite speech. When I began competing, I did it for the really neat trophies you could win. Now, I know there are benefits far beyond that. We are all given a power when we join Toastmasters, the power to touch other people’s lives and sometimes, when we are lucky, to change a life, to make it better. Doing that is what makes you a winner and it has nothing to do with trophies. Toastmasters has made me a different person! It has given me the confidence to go up to people I don’t even know and start talking to them about anything. I think that the greatest thing about Toastmasters is the ability to grow, no matter what level you’re at. But the greatest part of Toastmasters is the incredible friendships that are made. I have been a member of Toastmasters for a short time (less than one year) I became VP Membership on July this year. Initially I felt somewhat unqualified for the position, being so new in TM and having made only one speech so far, but I wanted to do something to help our small club. Besides, just about all the members who regularly attend meetings have some office role! I have a video tape of myself at one of my first speeches. I was really AWKWARD. The butterflies were swarming like killer bees inside. Not anymore now. Like everyone I know, I joined TM to get the rust out of my presentation skills. Leadership training was not on my agenda. But three weeks after joining, I was asked to run (unopposed) for VPE. “What’s that?” I asked. “Vice President Education,” was the reply. “Okay” I said, “Vice Presidents never do anything.” I quickly learned differently. Would you like to talk about your experience in our club? come along on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. We'd love to welcome you. Like to know more? Call me on 5496 9855 Martine.

Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club In our area, there are limited opportunities for musicians to perform publicly or to meet their peers and develop their skills as musicians in a friendly non-competitive environment. So a few musicians are getting together monthly, to begin with. The first event will be held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Steve Irwin Drive, on Thursday, May 12, from 7.00pm – 10.00pm. The evening will be run in a blackboard style where performers either elect on the night, or book beforehand, to play for approximately 15 minutes. There will be spots at approximately 7.00pm, 7.20pm, 7.40pm, 9.00pm, 9.20pm and 9.40pm with a feature act at 8.00pm. A hat will be passed around as a contribution to the costs of the feature act. Artists will also be encouraged to promote their work through CD and other merchandise sales. Meals and drinks will be available at the venue. Good quality sound will be provided for the artists, all styles of music are encouraged with an emphasis on folk, blues, world, jazz, and forms of improvisation, country, bluegrass and theatre music. Please join us in encouraging music making in our region. Any level of support is welcome and subsequent nights are planned for June and July. Planning ahead for a Happy Mother’s Day helps make the occasion fun and relaxing. Whether cooking a meal at home or setting up a weekend itinerary, what can help is to have a checklist of important points to have covered in advance: tickets, reservations, what to buy, and so on. Cards are ideally bought in advance to get a card well suited to Mum; if any of the kids are making cards, remind them, and help them if necessary, but make sure it is out of Mum’s sight and remember to clean-up the mess. Flowers sell fast around Mother’s Day so order a day or two in advance. If you’re planning a day out for Mum, remember to make reservations. Many restaurants see more business on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. Resorts, amusement parks, hotels and bed and breakfasts also tend to fill up fast. Make your reservations at least a week in advance. If you plan on taking in a play, concert or sporting event, make sure to purchase tickets in advance. Preparedness and attention to details can make trips out more thoughtful and that’s what makes Mums feel special - know where you’re going by making sure your GPS is working, or print out directions from your favorite online map site so Mum doesn’t end up being the navigator. Fill up the tank ahead of time and check the weather, as outdoor plans may have to be diverted indoors before a cold and cloudy forecast. Having alternative plans in mind shows Mum you have really thought about things. The day need not be expensive; a Mother loves hand-made cards from the children (probably less so from the father of her children) and to have someone tell her to put her feet up while she reads or watches her pick of a video and not have to worry about meals or washing up can make all the difference to Mum’s day. So have the camera charged, be on your best behavior and let Mum have a day of rest and pampering.

Justify your Existence
I noticed this statement on the back window of a car the other day and it set me thinking about the question. What is the basis of our existence? Most people have mixed feelings about themselves when it comes to our worth. Sometimes we like ourselves sometimes we don’t. If we feel good about ourselves we are happy, confident, relaxed and at peace. If we feel bad we can be anxious, irritable, depressed, and worry. It’s important we understand our worth and what the basis for it is. Is having lots of money a basis for a person’s worth? What about the world’s poor? Is good looks a basis for a person’s worth? Don’t grow old then! Are how many friends a person has? Some would think so. Is your employment what makes you of value? What about handicapped people, and those who cannot work or those who today don’t have employment? No, I don’t believe these are the basis of Human Worth. What makes us of value then? A young boy posted a sign in bold letters on his bedroom wall: 'I’m me and I’m good ‘cause God made me and God don’t make junk'. Poor grammar but a great attitude toward life! What makes us of value is we were created by God in his likeness and Image.

MAY 4 2011
5494 0655 To be a human being is unique compared to the animal kingdom. I love all of God’s creatures but humans are amazing, because they were created differently than animals. We were created body, soul and Spirit! You don’t see animals in worship like Humans. When is the last time you saw a group of kangaroos with their paws lifted to heaven in worship? However, in every culture in the world you will see people are worshippers. We were born to worship, every one worships something. Some people even worship themselves! Individually we are also unique. Each of us having our own distinctive looks, voice, finger prints, eyes, etc. No two human beings are exactly alike! You are one of a kind. The Prophet Isaiah put it this way when speaking about God’s people. 'I have called you by name; you are mine. you are precious to me. you are honored, and I love you.... Bring all who claim me as their God, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them.' Isaiah 43. Our value then is in what our creator thinks of us, and He has made it very clear that we are of great value .. 'For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.' John 3:16

SIMPLY BREATHTAKING
ursula@aboutrealestate.net.au
Presenting a property to the market is a challenging job. As a Real Estate Agent you work for the seller, but you have to attract a suitable buyer. In other words, the agent is the sandwich. The sales price of any commodity is the sum of manufacture cost, labour costs, administration costs, distribution costs and advertising. Properties follow similar rules. The sales price of a property should include the agent’s commission Ursula Starkovsky and all marketing. Marketing a property 5494 6244 or 0415 978 344 should be looked at as an investment 48 Simpson Street, Beerwah and not a cost for the seller, as proper www.aboutrealestate.com.au marketing will attract quality buyers. Just listing a property on the internet might not have the necessary impact.
4
An investment into proper marketing should be calculated at 0.5 per cent to 1.5 per cent of the total sales price. In other words, if your sales price is say $400,000, you set aside a budget of $2,000+ for your marketing campaign. Very often agents are expected to pay for marketing. It is interesting to note that the more the property is overpriced, the less likely sellers are willing to contribute to marketing costs. I wonder why? Each property is different and requires a different approach and the effectiveness of any marketing campaign is a combination of strategies. Any marketing program needs to be viewed and implemented as a whole rather than
a series of options to pick from. It has been proven that people will see an advertisement three to five times before they decide to take action. The Internet is great but there are more people responding to published advertisements than to listings on the Internet. ABOUT REAL ESTATE has the knowhow, the experience (as an agent, a vendor and developer) to propose the most cost effective and wide ranging marketing strategies. Interested to read the full blog, visit our website www. aboutrealestate.com.au and click on the WordPress icon or give Ursula a call to discuss (5494 6244). MAY 4 2011 |

Down & Dirty with Brownie
Spacious home on half acre
With 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms this house is out to impress. The interior of the home is very stylish including 9 ft ceilings, granite bench tops, dishwasher and Euromaid Appliances. The home also has a separate media room which is ideal to keep the children entertained. The home is airconditioned plus there are ceiling fans throughout even outside in the entertaining area. Outside there are two good sized entertaining areas; one out the back and one on the side of the house. As for your storage needs there is a 6m x 6m shed with power at the rear of the property. The property is eco friendly with solar panels on the roof which send power back to the grid plus a rain water tank at the rear of the home. The side access is big enough for you to drive all the way down to the shed at the rear. Having the home at the front of property allows this property to have a big backyard area. It has plenty of room for the children to play or if you need more storage space you could build another shed. The property is fully fenced plus has a remote front gate leading to the remote double car garage. Glass House Mountains township is only a short drive and is where you will find the closest Railway station. $575,000. To inspect this wonderful home please call Kelvin Brady on 0429 003 338.

Weed file Groundsel Bush Groundsel Bush is a Declared Pest Plant under State legislation and so must be controlled by landholders. As the weedy shrub is coming into flower now, it’s important that any Groundsel Bush be eliminated before setting seed. Interestingly, the plants are either male or female, with the male plants flowering before the females. Male Groundsel Bush has yellowish flower buds, while the females produce bunches of small, fluffy white flowers. Each plant can produce thousands of seeds which can float a long way in the wind. They prefer moist soils, but will germinate anywhere – even in hanging pots. Control them now by pulling or digging, or by using an appropriate herbicide.

Beegee’s News
With the seniors having the weekend off because of Sunshine Coast Representative games the focus turned back to junior Rugby League on the weekend. Saturday saw a great day and also some good footy being played by our junior teams. Each weekend we will be featuring a team and providing a report on their game and this week it is the Under 11 White Beerwah Team who are Sponsored by Elimination Pest Management. The under 11’s kept their good season continuing on Saturday by registering a 44-0 victory over the Palmwoods Devils at Beerwah. Very hard to single out any players as they all played as a team and Coach Peter Knox is happy with the way the players are improving as the season goes along. The Club would also like to congratulate our under 13 player Reed Mahoney who has made his way into the Wide Bay team to play in the State Titles in June and we all wish him the best of luck. The Seniors next game is against Gympie at Gympie on Saturday May 7 which should be another good quality game and we are looking forward to seeing all the Bulldogs supporters coming along and offering their support.
Been another weekend of washed out games with the makeup games for some teams are on the club’s web pages already. This coming weekend we have a big weekend at the club with all senior teams playing at home. Then on Saturday we have a massive day at home with 14 home games starting at 10.00am in the morning with the under 14 Div 2 girls and then junior games continue till the seniors start at 1.00pm with the 17’s then we have the 2nd Div men’s kicking off at 3.00pm then we finish with the 1st Div men’s at 5.00pm. Come along and have a good time Friday nights we have meals and canteen Saturday is the canteen only bar open till late on both nights.

The talking centipede
7 8
Just for Laughs
A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, (100-legged bug), which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him. So he asked the centipede in the box, "would you like to go to church with me today? We will have a good time." But there was no answer from his new pet. This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again.
"How about going to church with me and receive blessings?" But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation. The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede's house and shouted, "hey, in there! Would you like to go to church with me and learn about God?" This time, a little voice came out of the box, "I heard you the first jolly time! I'm putting my shoes on!" P Teirney, Beerwah
