O

n Sunday morning we went up to the lookout at Glass House to take the cover photo of Phil Suter featuring my favourite Glass House Mountain. Even though I have been to the lookout too many times to count, it is always great to be there when the place is packed with tourists all admiring the view. I love hearing all of the different languages and people looking and pointing at the interpretive signage and getting their bearings. It is nice to have that smug feeling of this is just our normal every day view. However what I really love is those days when you are driving around and you turn a corner and suddenly you see a mountain from a perspective that you haven't seen it from before and it hits your once again how spectacular they actually are. I was pretty sure we were the only locals up at the lookout, so we had to laugh when a lovely couple from Brisbane got chatting to us and asked if we knew where Maleny was and whether or not they should head up there.

Not one single local unsealed road will receive any funding to upgrade them for the next 20 years, according to a report approved by Council at last Thursday’s General Meeting.

Vacuum Excavation Trucks • Pothole Locating • Strip Trenching • Slurry Cleanups • Jetting Pipes

The ‘Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan 2015 – 2035’ report states that the ‘… Unsealed Roads Upgrade Plan 2015-2035, provides for sealing of around 45 km of currently unsealed roads over its life …’ and notes that it ‘… should be understood that a large part of the unsealed road network will not be sealed in the foreseeable future.’

Brett Tipper 0404 840 291

www.vacx.com.au

In coming to the conclusions that no local roads would be sealed for the next 20 years, the report shows that some council staff were consulted, but that no external consultation was undertaken and no community opinions were sought. The approved report leaves local roads such as Brandenberg Road, Moffatts Road, Andersen Road, Forestry Road, Laxton Road, Kidaman Creek Road, Meyricks Road, BeerburrumWoodford Road, Neill Road, Macdonalds Road, Sargeants Road, Krucks Road, Geraghty Lane, Engle Road, Herron Road and every other local dirt road without any plans or funding for upgrades until after 2035.

A great local ambassador By Sonia Clark When Landsborough resident Phil Suter realised that there was no locally written website about the Glass House Mountains he took it upon himself to create one. Community minded with an understanding of the benefits of sustainable eco tourism to local people, business and visitors, Phil set about putting together an informative website that is proving popular both here and overseas. The grassroots site has been well received with heaps of positive feedback and has been accessed by about 70 countries. Recently a UK based magazine that promotes Australia and New Zealand published a feature on the Glass House Mountains area after discovering Phil’s website. Local ambassador Phil Suter at his desk

Contacted by the magazine’s writer, Phil was able to provide local knowledge to enhance the story and the feature piece has been published internationally, both in print and online. With his website, Phil has tapped into an effective way of getting the message out to people about the beauty of the Glass house Mountains, along with promoting its natural eco tourism potential in terms of world class climbs, walks and bike tracks. Done completely voluntarily and as a labour of love, any onsite advertising merely covers costs, however Phil’s family have been completely supportive of his venture as hundreds of hours have gone into the site. As a Hinterland resident since 1987, Phil has always loved the natural beauty of the area. As someone who genuinely likes to talk with people, he started to help first promote the local area over 10 years ago when he worked as a volunteer at the tourist information van in Matthew Flinders Park, where he assisted both local and overseas tourists. A busy vocational trainer and family man with four young children, Phil still found time to set up a couple of websites. When asked by his website building company to pick something he was passionate about, Phil honed in on his desire to promote the area from a truly local perspective. Hoping to entice people not only to visit but to stay and try out some of the many outdoor activities - the site features detailed locally written information on climbs, walks, rides and parks.

The Glass House Mountains site has proven popular by users in Australia, as well as countries such as USA and China, and is a brilliant opportunity to share this fantastic region with others. Phil only sees the benefits in promoting the area, as it allows more people to enjoy the natural beauty of the region. He says a raised profile often lends itself to increased standards in local facilities and local businesses attract more opportunities. Phil would love to include more indigenous history and for locals to check out the site and to leave comments - especially about what secrets or gems about the area they’d like to share with others. www.glasshouse-mountains.com

The Sunshine Coast tourism industry has received a welcome boost with local buses now servicing the Aussie World precinct at Palmview from Monday. For the first time, four route 615 (Maroochydore to Landsborough via University) buses will travel to and from the theme park precinct, just off the Bruce Highway, seven days a week. This improvement will deliver a major boost to the Sunshine Coast tourism industry by providing an easy one-seat journey for customers travelling from key locations. Customers can jump on board one of the selected route 615 buses at any of the regular stops in Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore or transfer from the train at Landsborough station. Aussie World General Manager David Thompson said he was very excited that the new bus stop was opening at Aussie World. “This will provide the local community and tourists to the Sunshine Coast with a convenient and affordable transport option to get to Aussie World, The Pub and also our retail village,” Mr Thompson said. We’ve had countless requests from guests over many years for public transport options and it is fantastic to finally be able to provide that. “With continued investment and growth within our park, it’s great that our growing number of guests have a range of transport options available to them.”

Updated timetables - including which services will stop at Aussie World - are now available on the TransLink website www.translink.com.au and selected locations on the Sunshine Coast. Customers can plan their journey using the TransLink website, MyTransLink app or phone the Contact Centre on 13 12 30, anytime.

Local horse champ off to the US Fifteen-year-old Tahlia Harrop is making a big name for herself in competitive horse barrel racing securing a place in a major US competition in August. A member of the Speed2Succeed team, Tahlia will compete in the Makin’ it Mega junior championships in Jackson Mississippi. “I have always wanted to go to America and barrel race as it is a very big sport over there,” the Year 11 Beerwah High School student said. “This trip to America can lead to so many opportunities such as travelling and competing full-time as a professional.” Tahlia will be partnered with a horse for the course of the championships due to it being cost prohibitive to take one of her own five horses. The feat is impressive given that she only took up the sport last year with her 12-year-old Arabian horse, Zam. It was her win in the Makin’ it Mega series in November last year in the junior 2D barrel racing division and second placing in the pole bending that earned her a ticket to the US championships.

Tahlia has an impressive competition record, having represented the Mooloolah Pony Club at the pony club state titles for the past three years and placing in the top 10. “In December last year I was also selected by the Pony Club Association of Queensland to represent them in China for the Guangdong Horse Cultural Festival where I placed second,” she said. Tahlia is presently fundraising for her US barrel racing trip. If anyone would like to assist with the costs of car hire, stabling and accommodation visit http://de.gofund.me/mqka6c.

MANAGING PeriCoach is the first training device, web portal and smartphone app to take the guesswork out of pelvic floor muscle training. The PeriCoach device is for women who regularly follow doctorrecommended treatment for urinary incontinence (UI). It is an embarrassing and often debilitating problem millions of women experience particularly after childbirth or menopause, affecting 1 in 3 women worldwide. Urinary incontinence (UI) is characterised by an involuntary leak that often occurs while running, coughing, laughing or sneezing or even during sexual activity, or not being able to “hold it” when feeling a sudden urge. The device is meant for home use and is available directly to women as well as clinicians and physios. The PeriCoach was designed with help from professionals in the pelvic health field, to ensure the programs are beneficial in the privacy of your home or with assistance from a clinician.

A local metal artist has joined the Australia Zoo Birds Crew to raise funds for the endangered cassowary. Gerry McDonnell, from Beerwah, has spent the past 15 years in his shed crafting his talents into metal sculptures and was delighted to be asked to donate a metal replica of a cassowary to aid the fundraising event. The masquerade party fundraiser will be held at the Forest Sanctuary at Forest Glen on Saturday, March 21 at 7.00pm. This will be the first year the annual event will be open to the public. Join the Australia Zoo Birds Crew with your best costume mask as they raise much-needed funds for Rainforest Rescue's Save the Cassowary campaign, specifically for the care of three orphaned cassowary chicks. "Two of the chicks were found wandering alone down a road in Mission Beach with no sign of their dad nearby who was believed to be killed in a dog attack," said a Rainforest Rescue spokesperson. "The third chick was hit by a car and initially was unable to walk due to a fractured tailbone. After being in Rainforest Recue all three chicks are steadily improving and their appetite is growing daily. "It is expected they will be in care for approximately 12 months before they can be returned to the wild, costing about $36.00 per chick, per day." The Southern Cassowary is one of the worlds most prehistoric and endangered birds found in the tropics of far north Queensland and the chicks represent the future of the Southern Cassowary population in Australia.

By purchasing a ticket to the event you will be supporting Rainforest Rescue and the Save the Cassowary campaign. Items will also be auctioned off on the night and Gerry has heart-warmingly sculptured a cassowary, affectionately known as 'Cassie', out of remnants of metal from years gone by, to support the cause. Gerry said he enjoys the challenge of creating something unique out of all types of discarded metal mediums. "My art comes from my heart, soul and mind," says Gerry, who plans to host his own exhibition at his home in June. Tickets to the Australia Zoo Cassowary Masquerade Party cost $50.00 and need to be purchased by March 14 by visiting www. australiazoo.com.au/visit-us/calendar/322-savethe=cassowary-fundraiser. Eve and Desley go to the Nationals Two local women have been selected to represent the Sunshine Coast at the National Touch Football competition next week. Eve O’Mara and Desley Palmer – who both play for Glasshouse Mountains Open A-Grade side – will play for the Sunshine Coast Pineapples Women’s Over-35’s team to compete at Coffs Harbour from next Wednesday. From those games, the Queensland representative team will be chosen and, as both women have played for Queensland before, they are optimistic of being selected. Both Eve and Desley have to pay all their own costs for the four days of the competition. “We have to cover travel, accommodation, uniforms and food,” said Desley. “It’s a privilege to represent the Sunshine Coast, but a real drain on our personal funds. “We are hoping that we can raise some help and support from our local community, to offset some of these expenses,” she said.

Successful sausage sizzle After three days of intense inclement weather, on Sunday, February 22, a well-timed sausage sizzle, with the intentions of raising much needed funds, was enough to the trigger the taste buds of Caloundra Bunnings customers. A good amount was raised, as a result, in sustaining the life of the Scout group. The Landsborough Scout group would like to thank Beerwah IGA, who generously supplied and donated drinks, sausages and utensils. Loads of appreciation also goes out to Caloundra Bunnings help in providing the site, barbecue and all the tools needed for a great sausage sizzle, and to the leaders and parents of the Landsborough Scout group who helped with the sausage sizzle. The scouting community is a wonderful organisation providing a support base to our youth who benefit from many life skills instilled in this modern age.

Royal Honours for equestrian devotion Elimbah local Vince Corvi will be recognised in this year’s Parade of Champions for his dedication in the Sydney Royal Easter Show (the Show). The Champions have been selected by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) for commitment and long service to Show life, and will be recognised in a prestigious parade on Excellence in Agriculture Day on Tuesday, March 31. In its fourth year, the Parade of Champions, is a chance to honour those who made the Show the success it is today. Mr Corvi was born into the equestrian world, and has spent the past 40 years competing and judging in the Sydney Royal Horse Show.

Mr Corvi is passionate about passing on his knowledge to others and gets great pleasure out of helping others achieve their equestrian dreams. Winning Champion Hack, Galloway Hack and Champion Pony Hack in the one year is one of Mr Corvi’s greatest achievements at the Show, but his greatest memory is being asked to judge, an honour he said he will never forget. Robert Ryan, President of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS), says Mr Corvi epitomises everything the Show is about: Australia’s biggest celebration of our country’s people, practices and produce. “The Parade of Champions honours those who go beyond winning the ribbons and trophies. Some have been part of the Show community for a large part of their lives, and between all of them, have clocked up hundreds of Shows in Sydney. “The Show would not be the world class event it is today without the dedication and tireless commitment from our exhibitors who are represented by the 2015 crop of Champions,” Mr Ryan said. The 2015 Show will see more than 30,000 entrants compete across 40 competitions and over 5,000 competition classes from livestock, domestic animals, arts and wood chopping.

Reece’s Artistic Hair Design celebrates Reece’s Artistic Hair Design (R.A.H.D.) at Landsborough are thrilled to be celebrating their first year of business at their Landsborough salon. Given this milestone, this is a great opportunity to get to know a little more about this family owned and operated business. The salon consists of partners Reece Aberley and Tony Edwards along with Reece’s mum Deb (Mumsy). Reece has over nine years hairdressing experience and is a fully qualified hair stylist. Tony, a qualified masseuse with over 13 years’ experience, along with Deb, is currently completing his hair dressing qualifications. Reece has worked and managed at a number of salons throughout the coast over the years. He has successfully done interstate competition work highlighting his signature innovative uses of cut and colour as well as being on the judging panel for the Bundaberg TAFE hair show. Extremely passionate about his work and the use of colour, Reece is always willing to experiment

and push the boundaries in delivering an outstanding colour service for his clients. Drawing on his own experiences, Reece is committed to creating a salon where clients get what they want as opposed to what the stylist wants to do. Of course, if clients would like suggestions, then the team at Reece’s Artistic Hair Design are more than happy to provide ideas. Although the salon is known for its bold use of colours, all clients are welcome, as all cut and colour services are catered for from basic cut and colours to more adventurous designs. Both Deb and Reece are excellent at hair tattooing and Tony is getting known for his excellent head massages included with every shampooing service. The salon offers real coffee, wine and organic tea selections, and also offers massage, facial waxing, tinting and beard trimming. Customer feedback has been “just unbelievable”

with many happy repeat clients … some moving to Brisbane yet still returning to Reece for their cut and colour work. Open five days a week from Tuesday to Friday, 9.00am until 5.00pm and Saturday 9.00am until 1.00pm. The salon is also open Monday, Thursday night and Saturday afternoon by appointment. 5439 9029.

Peachester History Committee 1915: A big year for Beerwah Records show that a century ago, Beerwah was experiencing a period of rapid change and progress. 1915 was an important year for the township and district, with several significant community facilities established. In February the Beerwah sportsground reserve was proclaimed. Under the Lands Act of 1910, Portion 240 Parish of Bribie was permanently reserved for Recreation and Show Ground, and the first Trustees appointed: D. K. Cahill Jnr, James A. Mawhinney, C. R. Wilson, George S. Jones and George Francis Nicklin. March saw the completion and opening of the School of Arts. The official opening was a ‘RED LETTER DAY’ for Beerwah, as the Nambour Chronicle termed it. A full report appears in the Chronicle of March 12, listing official visitors and local dignitaries, with a summary of numerous speeches which apparently took all afternoon! ‘Beerwah had a great day on Wednesday of last week (March 3) when the official opening of the new and first School of Arts took place, accompanied with a banquet and in the evening a concert and ball. The Committee and Chairman John Simpson received many compliments. Hon W. H. Barnes (State Treasurer) congratulated Mr Simpson and the people of the district on the result of their effort: “Of late Beerwah had made marked progress… Everything indicated growth, and there were plainly men about who worked for the good of all.” Mr Forsyth MLA also congratulated the people of Beerwah. “He was always pleased to come to a district which was second to none in Queensland... Beerwah was now something to look at, with its hall, hotel and church all new.” The report includes much more in the same enthusiastic vein, with the reporter concluding, ‘With some attention to the roadway and

School of Arts and Simpsons Beerwah Hotel, both opened 1915 paths, Beerwah City will be fairly said to have made a start.’ Another major event was the dedication of St James Church of England. The Chronicle, March 19: ‘NEW CHURCH OPENED. Besides the School of Arts opening, now a matter of history, another evidence of Beerwah’s progress was given on the subsequent Saturday, when the new and working-bee built Anglican Church was opened by Archdeacon Le Fanu and Rev. Cecil Smith. The gathering outclassed the building, with a good deal to spare.’ At the same time as these community centres were under construction, John Simpson was building a new two-storey hotel in Simpson Street opposite the railway station. It seems there was a delay in transferring the licence from the old Coochin Creek Hotel because the new bar was not quite complete, which caused concern among potential customers. The Chronicle, February 19: ‘DISAPPOINTED. Our new hotel, from its quality as a structure and its imposing position, is naturally a considerable centre of interest. Unfortunately it will not be a hotel until April.’ So when we marvel at Beerwah’s progress and the ‘new’ Simpson Street of 2015, it is interesting to note that 100 years ago Simpson Street was also experiencing a dramatic facelift. School News This little piggy helps students to learn

Swimming carnival 2015

Contributed by Jade King The first weeks of Agricultural Science 2015 for the Glasshouse Country Christian College has been jam-packed! Hands-on learning has involved preparing the vegetable growing area, planting out loads of seedlings, feeding pigs, sheep and cattle, and clipping the wings of our many adventurous hens to prevent their great escape from one paddock to the next! Alongside all the practical fun, the students have immersed themselves in the world of Agricultural Economics, Environment and Nature, while completing the University of Western Australia course, which will give them a leading edge in their agricultural endeavours. This course has particularly enlightened many about the enormous need there is for Agricultural Technology in the future to feed an ever growing population. Finally, the first weeks were topped off with the arrival of 11 Wessex Saddleback piglets!

Beerwah State High School decided to showcase its sporting spirit at the annual Swimming carnival at the Beerwah pool on Friday, February 13. With a record attendance of 700 plus students, the four houses, Miketee, Budla, Tibro, and Ngungun demonstrated high spirits when marching from the school to the pool chanting their house names and wearing team colours. The races began with butterfly followed by breast stroke and backstroke. After these key events had finished, the points had been totaled and Mr Bateman announced that Miketee were in the lead, followed closely by Budla trailing by 58 points. Everyone wanted to do the freestyle event, with people even swimming in their school clothes showing full commitment, and it seemed all 700 students wanted to be in the all school swim and get that extra point for their house. After this finished the edge of the pool was lined with everyone waiting to watch the ‘Belly-Whacking’ competition. Juniors went first and Budla claimed this victory but Miketee senior girls proved they too were champions at the belly whack. The day finishing with Mr Jefferies announcing the places and tension slowly built as the winner was announced. ‘Miketee is winner’ with Budla following closely.

The students were even present to see the expecting sow preparing her nest for farrowing, however missed the birth, as sadly it was after school hours. Congratulations go to Coen Oosen, Taylor Olsen, Samuel Olsen and Maddie Kinsley for correctly guessing the number of piglets to be born! No bacon as a reward!

Success Project Numeracy at Peachester School Contributed by Peachester State School ‘Australia’s rankings in the Programme for International Assessment (PISA) tests continue to fall behind other Asian countries’ – this is the cry we hear in the media regarding the maths results of our 15-year-olds when the PISA results are released. Further data shows that maths and science based professions are suffering a shortfall in applicants due to students not choosing these subjects in secondary and tertiary education. Peachester State School students and staff are doing their bit to reverse this trend, through the wonderful opportunity to participate in the North Coast Region’s ‘Success Project Numeracy’. With the guidance of the regional education advisor for Australian Curriculum, Peachester

School teachers and students will have the opportunity to learn and practice research based strategies that focus on developing students’ understanding, fluency, reasoning, problem solving and build positive dispositions to mathematics. This also involves educating parents and the community on how they can enhance student learning through helping at home. One of the obvious differences parents will see is an increased use of ‘mental warm-ups’ – which focus on students ability to operate and calculate, use place value and work mathematically. Another feature of this project is opportunities for teachers to diagnose misconceptions and inefficiencies in student performance quickly and effectively. Thanks to North Coast Region, Peachester Primary will receive the support of an additional teacher to work with staff and students and release time for the school coach to work across the school. Staff are involved in modelling best practice lessons and gathering data on student performance and providing parent information sessions throughout this project. All Staff and parents of the 2015 student body are thrilled to have this program starting at the school and much thanks should be paid to the principal, Mrs Hodder who has brought this project to fruition.

Immediate freezing of electricity charges Next review after 2035

David and Christine have had the foresight to purchase a 5kW solar system and HQ Energy Hub manufactured by BYD, the #1 technology company in the world with Apple at 2nd place (2010). They have been tirelessly tested to do 7,000 cycles (19¼ years equivalent) AND STILL after that abuse they had 80% of their original capacity. No wonder they were judged #1.

This local retired couple were fed up with constantly rising electricity charges - 95% in the last 7 years and being on a fixed income, felt they may never cope in the future. So they took action now to freeze their electricity prices for the next 20 years. Their electricity usage charge for the next 20 years will not exceed $250* a quarter. If you want to know more about how you too can freeze your current electricity charges phone 07 5438 7200 * Ave. usage 16kWh/day

You Said It What's in the Spotlight

Bale of hay for the farmers

Cycling is a fantastic way for kids to get t and a fun way to travel to school. Register your kids via Council's website for National Ride2School Day on 13 March and be in the draw for some great prizes.

Last year the Sunshine Girls raised $1,600.00 for the farmers to feed their cattle and this year we have been asked if we could help the wives as there is no money for them to even buy a cream for their faces or shampoo to wash their hair. I am sure you would understand that any money left over from normal living costs, and the children’s needs, for example new shoes, means mum goes without to keep the family going. It is normal for all mums, but when your income is as small as theirs, mum goes without. We are asking other mums if they could help out by getting an empty shoe box (any shop will give you one) and when you go shopping every week buy something a mum on the land would need, and fill your box. Cover the box and make it look pretty but do not seal it. Put an elastic band around it, and do not put nail polish or lollies in the box as they cannot cope with the heat. Face cream, shampoo, conditioner, nail file, nail cream, deodorant, sanitary pads, pretty soap, hand cream, hair brush, hair ties, beanie, scarf, socks, tissues, lip cream, talc etc are suitable. You will know when you are shopping, and see something. We will collect up until October so no rush. Please remember our farmer’s wives as they are also the backbone of our country. MARCH 4 2015

I wish to thank my family and special friends who helped me celebrate my 100th birthday in such a memorable way. It was great that my nephew and his wife and my cousin were able to travel from England and cousin John from Melbourne to be with me. To have family is always so special. About 20 of us went to ‘The Hideaway’ at Beerwah to have a delicious meal of roast lamb or chicken and the cake was superb. I am sure that Lea would politely decline to print a letter from me if I told her exactly how my husband and I feel about the ‘mash for brains’ 4 wheel drivers who hooned around during the recent floods, speeding through flood waters and creating huge washes as we were trying to clean up. You idiots know who you are, so please try and grow up. How about volunteering some of your obviously spare time to the SES? Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Now that the donut shop is no longer going into the Beerwah Marketplace, would it be possible for centre management to display some more common sense and leave Mrs. Browns where they are? Makes sense to me. Marg Rouhan Beerwah

Sand bags success

On Friday, February 20 I have never had so much water running down my drive, across the road, and into my property. I have been here over 20 years and it is the first

time I have had to call SES for sand bags to save my house from having water going through it. Looking east to west down Gattera Road it was only my neighbours area and mine that had water, I ask the question why? I rang council and no one would come out to check it out until I filled in a form. How ridiculous is this? To the SES Glass House many thanks for the sand bags you put across my verandah as the water rose to just 1cm from going into my house. To my neighbours for their help Friday evening filling sand bags and digging a trench across my drive way, I will never be able to repay you. Thankyou John, Robyn, Karen, Maxine and Johnno also Robbie and Jean for their help. With the extra rain on Saturday your help made it so much easier for me to cope. Iris Landsborough

Making space for new projects

You all know what it is like when you move house or, have a Spring clean, you find all sorts of stuff that you no longer need. Which is what happened when Glasshouse Country Menshed starting unpacking everything from our two shipping containers when we moved to our new facility. So on Saturday, March 14, we will be putting out the Garage Sale signs on Peachester Road, from 7.00am to 1.00pm. On the day we are going to hold an information morning as well, to inform local blokes what the Menshed is all about. There will be displays on whip platting, belt making and patterning, and general information on the Menshed. They will also have a sausage sizzle, plus other food, with hot and cold drinks. You can come along to the shed at 352 Peachester Road Beerwah (Glasshouse Country Care), shout yourself breakfast, smoko or lunch. You can sit around and have a chat for free, and check out the wide range of goods for sale. Included in the garage sale are tools, as well as a range of working preloved mowers, whippersnippers and chain saws, that have had a makeover by our small engine specialist. You can also check out the new community garden. The men can share their plans to improve the facilities within the shed where the men will be able to offer a range of new activities to start within the next few months. This is an invitation to the local blokes to come along for a chat and to let the men know if you have any special talents you may like to share with other men. You may play a musical instrument, produce art, with water, oil or just a pencil, or maybe you have computer skills you can share? Come along and check us out. Bob McLean Glasshouse Country Menshed

By Kaz from Soulqi We all know depression is an increasing problem and research has shown that a significant amount of patients with depression do not fully recover. While there is medication to treat the condition, I believe all of us need to find ways to manage it effectively. Some new research suggests depression is an allergic reaction to inflammation. It is our immune system’s response to inflammation, often caused by our diet, that can be the root of many problems. Research has shown acupuncture can be effective in the treatment of depression resulting from inflammation. Treatments are often related to the stagnation of Liver Qi and an indication that the ability of Qi to flow smoothly through the body has been disrupted. People often look for a quick cure and are inclined to take a pill rather than face the emotional pain associated with depression. Energetically there is a cost for relying on these pills and a consequence in their long term use. Acupuncture treatment takes commitment and it is recommended that the best outcomes result from clients who participate twice a week for four weeks, followed up with weekly sessions for another four weeks, then monthly treatments for three months.

Living - Music Music Today

with Dr Michael Whiticker

Who is Robert Wyatt?

Live & Local in March

What’s on at the … Beerwah RSL, Beerwah Hotel, Hotel Maleny, Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchants, The Pub at Aussie World and Misty’s at Montville

It’s with little fanfare that the world recently greeted news of English musician Robert Wyatt’s 70th birthday. My interest though was piqued and my googling uncovered a quaint documentary – The Robert Wyatt Story, BBC Four, 2001. Wyatt made his name as the drummer for avant-garde jazz outfit Soft Machine in the late 60s and when an accident rendered him a paraplegic he said it was no big deal – getting fired from Soft Machine was harder! But it certainly changed the way he made his music, with him going on to become a singer songwriter of peculiar yet notable songs. The early 70s saw a reasonable number of successful, unconventional musicians working in popular as well as jazz, folk and classical or art music. Wyatt stood out however because of his immediately recognisable, conversational highpitched singing voice, very quirky lyrics and the interesting musicians with whom he associated, people such as Brian Eno, Carla Bley, Nick Mason, Jimi Hendrix and Elvis Costello to name just a few. The BBC documentary features a number of grabs from an interview with Eno who remains for me, probably the most remarkable popular musician in the English speaking world today. Eno speaks of Wyatt as one of the two most interesting musicians alive (he doesn’t mention the other), which speaks volumes of the man. My own discovery of Wyatt was through my ‘pay day’ searches of record stores. LPs of course, being a reasonable sized canvas for an artist, were often used to grab the attention with some sort of visual statement, knowing, as the creator’s did, that this might be your first ‘hearing’ of the music. Wyatt’s ‘Ruth is Stranger than Richard’ was one such album for me. Visually it stood out from the rest, and the music - alternative, quirky, haunting and beautiful. What more could you ask in a record? With due deference to Mr Eno, I don’t consider Robert Wyatt one of the two greatest living musicians, but I wouldn’t consider such a list anyway. If you don’t know his work and have a spare hour you might find the documentary on YouTube worth a watch. Or, if you have time for just one song, check out his ‘Sea Song’. It is a surreal love ballad and quite spine tingling, but also very beautiful. The original version off the Rock Bottom album is the one to listen to. Have an inspiring musical month!

Does fame await you? By Sonia Clark

Fancy yourself as a bit of a muso? Talented shower singer just waiting to release your inner diva? Then check out Beerwah RSL’s ‘Open Mic Night’. Wanting to put on something a little different, resident muso Paul Fagan initially came up with the idea of running an open mic night at the venue. Currently running monthly, (though there will be a break in April due to Easter) - if you can sing or play an instrument then this could be an opportunity for some public exposure or just a great way to have fun on a Friday night. Starting at 6.30pm, the night features a four piece backing band consisting of a guitar player, bass, drums and keyboard. The choice is yours – you can bring your own instrument to play / accompany yourself or alternatively you can get up and sing backed by the band. If you’d like to have the band back you up, then a chord sheet would be ideal, but not necessary. Come along and have a look and if you are feeling adventurous then put your name down on the blackboard early in the night to secure your spot. Either way meals are available from 6.00pm and courtesy bus is available so you can make a night of it. Next ‘Open Mic Night’ is Friday, March 13. 5494 0289 / facebook Beerwah- RSL- Club

Glasshouse Mountains Riding School, Belle Phlynn Park Welsh Pony Stud and Sunshine Coast Party Ponies were all borne from Belinda’s love of horses due to her farm upbringing. “We purchased our Yeates Road property at Beerwah in 2006 and saw a need in the community for children to have somewhere to learn to ride and nurture their love for horses in a safe and happy environment,” Belinda said. “We now have riders competing at state level who have developed their skill through the riding school.”

Welsh ponies were added and expanded with a breeding program, creating the pony stud. One of their Welsh stallions won the Champion of Champions at the 2014 All Welsh. “We have 15 broodmares producing wonderful children’s ponies. Ann Ross Ann Ross is on a dedicated mission to commercially launch a design solution to save our Australian native bee populations. The venture, called Hive Haven, is operated out of Ann and her husband Jeff’s mechanical workshop, the Beerburrum Service Centre. It all started a few years back when a swarm of honey bees moved into the wall of the workshop which soon resulted in a honey bee hobby for the couple. Ann quickly expanded this to include native stingless bees; however she lost all her hives due to heat stress in the 2014 heatwaves. “This led me to start experimenting with alternative box designs and materials to eliminate heat stress” she said. Having developed the

business model in conjunction with the University of the Sunshine Coast’s (USC) Entrepreneurial Program, Ann’s vision is inspirational. “On June 7 Hive Haven will launch the ultimate in funding campaigns aimed at raising sufficient funds to engage the USC in a market readiness and development program to provide bees with the sustainable protection they need against the devastating effects of heat distress. I want people to know that each and every one of us needs to make some space somewhere in our lives to address the bee crisis,” Ann said. M: 0428 427 576 W: www.hivehaven.com.au

Taylah Boultbee

‘Matt Fiddes Martial Arts’ franchise owner Taylah loves her work and is committed to providing an award winning children’s martial arts program to local hinterland families. Taylah first became interested in martial arts when still at high school. Discovering she had a passion and natural affinity for the discipline, she rapidly moved into grading, and after only a short period of time, was asked by her instructor if she could swim. Replying that yes she could, her instructor at the time said, “good, then I’m throwing you in the deep end,” and asked if she would be interested in filling in to teach the following week’s class. From being a popular fill-in teacher, Taylah

then progressed to being asked if she would be interested in the opportunity to set up her own school, and now three years later, Taylah is the successful franchise owner. The martial arts school specialises in children’s programs and has found particular benefit for children who have behavioural issues and require assistance with confidence, discipline and self esteem – though the programs are suited for all children from ages three and up as they help reinforce great life skills including respect and self control. Great eats and treats to find locally!

Vianta This month Lea and I headed out for lunch together at Vianta. This way we could both sample the menu and I could give readers a more balanced dining experience - so I tried a vegetarian option and Lea decided to enjoy something meaty. I really like the ambiance of Vianta, owner Steve Moon has got the mix just right, with a warm and inviting space that is both comfortable and accessible, yet with an almost upmarket European cafe appeal. This appeal is generally helped by the bevy of international staff that works there and it is always interesting to have your coffee or meal served by someone with a lovely European accent! The cafe is spacious yet appears cosy and intimate through the use of beautiful wooden

floors, panel led serving counter, signature feature wall colouring, and leather lounges. The ambience is further enhanced by international artwork adorning the walls and open bookcases cleverly used to define spaces. While we were there, the cafe was packed with all types of customers, with comfortable chairs and indoor/on street dining appealing to many, and with plenty of room for strollers without feeling crowded. The menu was pleasantly comprehensive. Vianta offers a tapas style menu that also includes heaps of options such as all day breakfasts, wraps, desserts (many GF), quiches and fresh salad – all at very reasonable prices. So we were both spoilt for choice. In the end Lea decided on the steak sandwich ($8.90) and I

went for the trio of dips ($10.50). Being the coffee lover that I am, I went for flat white – made beautifully to my request and Lea tried the iced latte expresso which she said had the caffeine hit but was more refreshing than a hot drink. Service was friendly and our meals arrived quickly – which was great given that we were both just ‘ducking out of the office’. Lea’s steak sandwich consisted of a rib fillet which she found ‘nice and tender’, and my trio of dips were super tasty with good servings of in house made hummus, guacamole and spicy sweet pumpkin. Vianta ticks all the boxes for me and I can only recommend dropping by. Open seven days 7.00am - 6.00pm (5.00pm Sunday).

WEB of LIFE exhibition Lift Gallery will stage an exhibition in March / April of morning spiderweb photos by local photographer Richard Giles. Richard is a writer who has contributed to health and environmental magazines over the years. He's dabbled in photography and had his first photo exhibition many years ago while living in Adelaide. His early morning walks in spring and autumn at the Crystal Waters community in Conondale have inspired him to capture those misty valley morning scenes on film. His fascinated by the complex woven life-form spiderwebs in early dawn light, he began photographing them, and has collected around 160 photos. A selection will be displayed in the exhibition titled 'The Web of Life'. The exhibition will help connect you to the way in which we are all interconnected in our life forms, much like the spider webs seen in the exhibition and their intricate jewelled patterns. The official opening is Sunday, March 8 at 11.00am and the exhibition runs through March and April. Experience your web-life connections. Health reform debate

One of my first priorities for 2015 was to talk to the local medical community about health reform. On February 3, I hosted a Health Forum in Brightwater with approximately 40 local medical professionals in attendance. At the forum I presented on my views on Medicare reform and where I believe the Government should be focusing their efforts. I was very pleased to see the local medical community express their desire to work collaboratively with Government to ensure that any health reform is appropriate, sustainable and ultimately provides the best health outcomes. In the same week I was pleased to have Health Minister Sussan Ley visit the Electorate as part of her consultation on Medicare reform. Minister Ley attended meetings in my office with local doctors and pharmacists and I am happy to say that her approach to consultation is definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to health reform. I look forward to keeping you updated on this important topic.

Counter-terrorism review

The release of the review into counter-terrorism has found heightened home grown terrorism risk. This is a concern for all Australians. To address this, the Government will implement the following recommendations: • Ensure returning foreign fighters are prosecuted or closely monitored using strengthened control orders • Appoint a National Counter Terrorism Coordinator • Develop a new national counter-terrorism strategy • Develop a new national strategy to counter violent extremism • Develop a new Public Alert System to simplify information on information released on the terror threat. These measures are in addition to the actions taken last year to strengthen our security. Rest assured that we as a Government will continue to work hard to combat these threats so Australians can live in the safe environment we value and deserve.

Support for the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club

When the going gets tough our Glasshouse community certainly comes together to make the best of a challenging situation. I congratulate everyone in our community for the support they have shown so far, either financially or in kind, to the campaign to see the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club remain open. We all know how valuable this facility is and any assistance anyone in the community can give will be greatly appreciated. Please contact the Club if you can support in any way.

My door is always open

The primary role of a Member of Parliament is to listen to the concerns and views of the community and work to address them. Over the past three years we’ve had plenty of local success in that regard – such as reductions in public transport fares and our successful campaign to install traffic lights at Reed Street. Whilst I have always had an open door policy at my electorate office, and have endeavoured to hold as many mobile offices around the electorate as possible, I am exploring ways to make my office even more available to the broader Glass House community into the future. Rest assured, I will be listening to you and encourage any comments or feedback you might have to be sent to my email address – glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au or you can call my office and arrange for a phone appointment – 5435 2013.

Keep up to date

To ensure you are up to date with my local movements and any initiatives I am working on, please visit my website regularly or sign up to my monthly eNewsletter – www.andrewpowell.com. au. I am happy to promote any local community events on my webpage also so just send an email through to the office will all of the details. I also use Facebook to pass on any valuable community related information and share any pictures from the places I have been. Make sure you search Andrew Powell and like my page to keep up to date.

The effects of natural disasters

Recently the Sunshine Coast was pounded with rain and it brought to mind what natural disasters can do. Once again we were lucky, but our time will come. Natural disasters bring with it property damage, including loss of homes, buildings and livelihoods. Disasters can have a psychological impact that varies from person to person. Impacts can include depression, anxiety, and grief and sleep disorders. If not treated, the person can develop a post traumatic-stress disorder, though this occurs in very few cases. Hearing and reading the stories of loss from Cyclone Marcia and earlier disaster events can trigger bad memories for many people. I urge people to keep an eye on their family members and friends who have suffered any losses from a natural disaster and if concerns arise, speak to your GP who can offer practical advice. It is important we get everyone who has been through Cyclone Marcia and any natural disaster back on their feet both financially and emotionally. Let’s look after one another and make certain that we put our arms around a neighbour, a friend, a family member and say we are there for them if they need us. I also want to thank the SES for sandbagging homes across the sunshine coast. All volunteers put in an enormous effort and we should be very proud of each and every one of them.

Environment Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Challenging times It is official – last year was the hottest on earth since record-keeping began in 1880. Local weather has been especially tough for gardeners – long months of minimal rain followed by heat and excessive humidity are enough to test the hardiest of plants. Many traditional vegetables, fruit trees and shrubs have been decimated by disease or insect infestations, or shrivelled from sunburn or lack of water. With the reality that these extremes may be the new normality, gardeners will have to adapt. This may include some tough decisions, such as sacrificing those plants that are too thirsty, and replacing them with tougher species. Local natives are inherently more tolerant of climate extremes; Acacias, Banksias and the local Hop Bush, for example, are droughttolerant options. Lomandras and paperbarks will tolerate occasional flooding as well as extended dry periods. Plants that have suffered need to be left alone – don't cut off affected foliage as it is actually shading and protecting the growth below. Adaptations for vegetable gardeners may involve shading beds using heat resistant plants such as lavender or rosemary, or even 'putting the garden to bed' during the hot, wet season. Alternatively, traditional vegetables can be substituted with hardier varieties or bushfoods that are resistant to extreme climate events. Snake beans are resistant to bean fly, angled luffa can replace zucchini as they are resistant to powdery mildew, and Ceylon spinach does not bolt in hot weather. Deep watering and mulching prior to heatwaves can also help.

Clarence

Contributed by Martin Pedder I had prepared and lit a small bonfire in the garden, and was feeding it with handfuls of dry waste – weeds and cuttings. Picking up another handful, I noticed that it was heavy, and assumed that it was wet. It would dry out on the fire, and then burn. The next load for the fire was even heavier, but I threw it on anyway. Then I noticed movement – there was a snake on the top! I picked it out quickly and threw it to one side. It was a python, about two metres of wriggle! In the country area, I supposed that carpet pythons were not rare, and they are not poisonous, anyway, so I was not scared or surprised to see it. That summer, we saw the python several times. We had begun to keep a few chooks, in a run with a shed and fenced orchard. They loved the shade of the orchard trees. We found the python (by now familiar to us) near the shed, and then in it! I chased it out. We figured that the snake was eating the rats and mice that lived near chooks, and that was a benefit to us – he was kind of guardian of the chooks, never harming them – so we gave him a name – Clarence! Over the 10 years that we knew him, Clarence grew to four metres in length and about seventy millimetres in girth. We had a long and wide verandah, on which he enjoyed lying in the sun, and when a kiwi-fruit vine climbed to and spread along the railing, he would curl up on top of that to enjoy the sun. Despite his frequenting the chook-shed, we lost neither chooks nor eggs. I saw him twice climbing a drainpipe and disappearing into the roof, and supposed that he found mice up there – we occasionally heard soft shuffling sounds above us. Our last meeting with Clarence occurred when he chose to sleep on the second stair leading from the garage to the basement. He was dopey enough that I was able to photograph him, then to invite Doris to sit beside him. By then, he had posed enough, and he went away down the stairs. When we left the house, we asked the new owner to look after him, our friend! www.gcnews.com.au

Wildlife Hospital’s most long-term patient due for release

After almost two years of continuous treatment for a debilitating disease, Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital’s most long-term patient, Hume the koala, is finally on the road to recovery and release. Hume came to the wildlife hospital in July 2013, suffering from Chlamydia, a disease causing significant population decline in the now vulnerable koala populations in South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Unfortunately, Hume’s condition had some complications resulting in a rare case of fungal cystitis which required an extensive period of time to treat, and has cost an estimated $20,000. Treating vet and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital Veterinary Services Manager, Claude Lacasse, was determined to find a treatment for Hume. “Fungal cystitis is a very uncommon disease in koalas and therefore there’s little known about the best medicine to use for treatment,” she said. “It was well worth the time and research to find something that would treat Hume’s infection long-term, as it now means we know where to start if another patient comes to us with the same disease.” Hume has recently been cleared for release, and moved from his resting spot in the mammals ICU to the gum trees of the koala plantation. Here, he is currently becoming reacquainted with the great outdoors and gaining his strength. After two long years residing at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, staff will miss the calm and relaxed yet inquisitive Hume that they’ve fallen in love with. However they could not be more thrilled that their hard work has paid off, and Hume is finally a healthy koala ready to return to Teddington, near Maryborough, where he came from. Hume will also be radio-tracked as part of a research project, providing valuable insights to his movement and behaviours after being introduced back to the wild. The wildlife hospital are involved in crucial koala health research projects including collaborating with the University of the Sunshine Coast and Queensland University of Technology to develop a koala Chlamydia vaccine which has the potential to one day help koalas like Hume become immune, reducing the high mortality rate in the remaining population. Of the 668 koala patients admitted to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital in 2014, over 40% were affected by Chlamydia - meaning the development of a vaccine could make a significant difference in the fight to save this iconic species. Jesus said to his Disciples, Ask, and it will be given to you; search and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7) In these words our Lord indicates that God does answer our prayers. Our Lord’s insistence on this fact puts one in mind of the well-known story of the little girl who was taunted by her friends that God had not answered her prayer because she did not receive something she had prayed for. The little girl responded, “God answered my prayer; it’s just that his answer was no.” The truth of the matter is that God does not have to be informed as to what our needs are. He knows them better than we do, and actually grants what we really need, though not always what we think we need. St Augustine put it succinctly when he said, ‘If our prayers seem not answered, it is because Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM either weGCNEWS do not ask rightly or we do not ask for the right thing.’ MOOLOOLAH: Sun 10 am Public Hall, Bray Rd

God, more than the best of parents, is concerned with giving us the right thing, but he does will that his gifts come to us in answer to our prayers. Every parent should be able to understand why God wants us to ask for things. Good parents will take care of their children, but they are pleased when their children turn to them with confidence, as well as politeness, for they thereby show that they recognise both the ability of their parents to help, as well as their love will move them to help. All prayer should be worship to God, that is, recognition of God’s power and love, even the prayer of petition. When we pray to God with humility, realising his almighty power, and with confidence, recognising his love, He will give us the good things we need.

Sport Primary students make a splash in the GCCC record books By Wendy Stott Glasshouse Country Christian College primary students flooded into the Beerwah Pool ready to battle it out against other house teams to gain the title of Swimming House Champions. Every house tent was decorated with colourful signs and ribbons, with sharks, crocodiles and tigers adding to the atmosphere of fierce competition. War cries were thunderous with Zion being declared cheer champions at the end of the day. Caitlin Moore was the stand out swimmer of the carnival winning every event she swam in and also breaking the record in every event.

War cry champions Zion cheered so loudly they were a victim of their own success with some team members having to block their ears

Caitlin is aiming to swim at the State Championships so she is off to a great start. Joshua Collins and Olivia McKenzie also swam superbly winning all six races in their respective age groups to gain maximum points for their sporting houses. Other stand-out competitors were Jaymes Roser, Joshua Moore, Amy Trevan, and Ella Childs. In between the serious races, novelty events added fun and excitement to the day. Students raced across the pool riding inflatable sharks and turtles in between the more serious races. There was also time for fun relays at the end of the day.

In between the serious races there was some serious fun with the novelty races

Glasshouse & District Tennis

Contributed by Jill Kirchheiner Friday Night Tennis – well the first matches got underway last Friday at Glass House with no weather problems. Make sure that you organise a fill-in player if unable to play on the Friday night or re-organise the match with all the other players for another day. If there is still a problem then you need to contact Katya. The season fees are due now and need to be paid in full by March 27

or make arrangements with Katya re payment. Also commencing Friday, March 6, there will be social tennis starting at 7.00pm and is open to all players of any age and ability. Cost will be $5.00, which is to be paid prior to playing and you just need to turn up at Glasshouse Sports Club tennis courts. This will commence after the Friday night fixture matches.

Masters AFL returns for 2015

Contributed by Craig Bales With the appointment of Mitch and Suggy as dual Coaches for 2015 the Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Lions (Over 35’s) are looking to have a big year. It is now time to dust of the footy boots and the lace up jumpers and get down to training which will be held on Thursday at 5.45pm at the Landsborough Sports complex. We are kicking of the season with a Carnival at Redlands on March 22 so we need to get down and start fine tuning those long forgotten skills! The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto is Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship.

There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Master’s attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbie’s to ex AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and our oldest 69! The season is a 12 game fixture, played fortnightly. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment rather than premierships and flags. At the end of each season there is a national carnival, last year it was in Darwin and next year will be Adelaide, where players from across the state represent QLD against all the other states and territories. Any interested players can contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig.Bales@Quantum.com

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

On his deathbed Bill Smith is on his deathbed and knows the end is near. His nurse, his wife, his daughter and two sons are with him. So, he says to them: "Bernie, I want you to take the Hamilton houses." "Sybil, you take the apartments over in Bulimba." "Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the city centre." "Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the

Your Stars

Brisbane river." The nurse is just blown away by all this, and as Doug slips away, she says, "Mrs Smith, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have accumulated all this property." Sarah replies, "Property? .... he had a paper run!" Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah
