Hi Everyone
O
n Saturday morning with the whole long weekend ahead of us we decided to head along to the Maleny Wood Expo at the Maleny Showground for a day out (and a bit of work) with my sister and brother-in-law. The weather looked dodgy when we arrived at lunchtime, however this didn’t stop us from enjoying some great burgers made by the volunteers from Barung Landcare and squishing ourselves under a marquee (to keep the burgers dry) and building up the energy required to look at everything on display. And while I am by no means a woodworking enthusiast, it was easy be get caught up in watching people fondling pieces of raw timber and talking about the projects they were planning to create. And it is amazingly captivating watching people making things as part of the workshops, and of course it is pretty intriguing watching Matty G carving a Bunya nutwith a chainsaw – the only thing I can imagine doing with a chain saw would be causing damage or possibly cutting one of my fingers off. Ahhh … to have an ounce of his creative talent and good handeye co-ordination. Thanks to Barung Landcare and congratulations on running your 20th annual event! Regards,

Local News Joy shares subjects she loves Beerwah is very lucky to have a watercolourist of Joy Joyce’s talents exhibiting at Vianta. The exhibition ‘Memories, Memoirs, Memorabilia’ is a selection of her paintings which are memories of her travels, and of subjects that she loves. Joy started painting at the age of forty, and, not realising that everyone didn't draw, she was astounded to find that she had a special feel for painting. Joy attended a TAFE arts certificate course in Armidale, completing subjects in painting, drawing, and colour and design. However, this course didn't include watercolour, and learning the technique of watercolour had become her main ambition. After finishing the art course Joy attended every weekend school she could find, including several summer schools at Mitchell College in Bathurst, where Judith White introduced her to creative watercolours. Since then Joy has won many prizes in the New England area, and has held solo exhibitions in Coffs Harbour, Texas Queensland, Armidale, Maleny and Longreach, and has participated in joint exhibitions, too numerous to name. Joy taught workshops in those places, and in Florida, Woodford, Armidale, Caloundra, Mackay, Coffs
Harbour, Tamworth, Bribie Island, Barraba, and Bingara. As well as conducting workshops, Joy teaches private students at her studio in Beerwah. She feels that each piece of her art should take the viewer on a new journey of discovery, capturing their interest and imagination. She believes that each painting should depict movement, yet contain stability and peace. Joy’s exhibition ‘Memories, Memoirs, Memorabilia’ will be on display at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, until May 29 and it opens at 6.00pm on Friday, May 6. Light refreshments will be served at the opening, and an a la carte menu will be available from 7.00pm. For table bookings, call Vianta on 0412 312 399. For information about having an exhibition at Vianta Arts, email reddoorart@bigpond.com.

Community comes together
By Lea Parkes
Last week GC&M News included a letter from Bianca Howard asking for your support for a Glass House Mountains family who were facing the most devastating event … they were mourning the loss of their unborn child, and the mum Gemma Rane was fighting for her life. Sadly Gemma has since passed away as a result of complications related to the pregnancy, leaving behind Gemma’s fiancée Chris Baker and their 18 month old son, Chayse. Family and friends have been devastated by the loss of someone they describe as vibrant, fun, loving, and gentle, and last week they joined together in an effort to raise funds to reduce the burden on Chris as he now brings up Chayse alone. A GoFundMe account has been set up as a means to gather donations, with a target of $50,000. To date, the community has got behind this and already over $15,000 has been raised. On Saturday family friends organised a hugely successful family fun day called ‘A day to remember’ at the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern, which included kids entertainment, a massive barbeque, raffles and an auction of donated items. One of the organiser’s Sandy Goulding contacted us to let us know just how many businesses had thrown their support behind the event by generously donating to help bring the event together. We have included a thank you to them on page 21.

Chayse, Chris and Chris's mum, Kellie Sandy said that while the final tally is not yet complete from the event, nearly $20,000 has already been raised, and that there are also other fundraising events planned for the future including a fundraising dinner to be held at the Glass House Mountains RSL on Friday, May 28. If you would like to support the family you can donate by going to www.GoFundMe.com/2pt2ntuc or cash donations will be taken at the IGA and 7 Secrets Pizza and Café at Glass House Mountains.

Celebration of a life lived well Last Friday morning I attended the ‘celebration of Pastor Les Peel’s life’ at Church on the Rise in Beerwah. A celebration it was, with people’s fond recollections and the reminders of the things that Les was known for and which made him a truly unique character. Each spoke of Les’s approach to life and his passion and enthusiasm for which he lived each day as a ‘one of a kind’, a genuine down to earth ‘Aussie’ bloke. Les was born on September 14, 1941 and was raised in Brisbane. When he left school he went to work for Singer Sewing Machines, before joining the army and serving for six years. During this time he served in Borneo and Malaysia, during the Malaysia Confrontation and completed his service just before the Vietnam conflict. Upon leaving the army, Les took on a job with Kellogg’s and moved to Townsville, which was where he met the love of his life Dawn. They subsequently married and had two children – Damon and Jacinta – and later this year they would have been celebrating 49 years of marriage. It was while living in Townsville that Les met Jesus and his life was changed forever. Dawn had begun going to church and Les, noticing a change in Dawn, went along to see what all the fuss was about. In 1982 Les and Dawn moved the family to Roma and served in the church for seven years mostly as a youth leader, and it was at this time that the foundations for his future ministry were laid.
By Lea Parkes
Around 1988 Les and Dawn moved to St George, where he built and established the church there. After four and a half years they were called to Landsborough where they took up the position of Pastors. They relocated the church to Beerwah and spent a number of years in what was affectionately known as ‘The Shed’. The opportunity arose to purchase the Baptist Church which is now known as Church on the Rise and it was where Les and Dawn served for 15 years as the Senior Pastors, before handing over to Pastor Rod and Rhonda Jobe to lead the church. From here, Les and Dawn hit the road, but continued to work in communities that needed them. Firstly to Blackall, then on to Middlemount and Gayndah and Mundubbera and then on to Bowen. After a year in Bowen, Les felt it was time to move away from Pastoral Ministry and transition into an encouragement role revisiting the churches they had been involved with over the years. Their journey took them back to St George, then to Roma, on to Blackall, then to Longreach, where sadly Les would spend his last day, doing what he loved best … talking to the kids at Religious Education classes and helping out at the church. As I listened to each of the speaker's words, I smiled at their stories. Jacinta describing how Les was definitely guilty of the pleasure of a ‘Dad joke’; numerous comments about Les not being limited by his appalling singing voice; his love of sharing (often lengthy stories);and his capacity for kindness. However, I think that the description given by Les’s daughter-in-law Fiona was the one I liked most.

While she agreed Les was definitely a unique ‘fella’, she said she always thought of him as more of an ‘enigma’ … someone that was baffling, mysterious and puzzling, that cannot be explained. Les was a man with a huge heart full of genuine concern, and compassion for those that were part of his life and if we could all take a little bit of inspiration from his approach to life – the world would be a far better place.

Men’s Shed make history for local Lions The next forty years of Beerwah Lions Club Presidents now have somewhere to be recorded, thanks to the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed. The Lions honour board – which lists the names of the presidents of the Lions club – had no more space left and so the Men’s Shed were enlisted to help create a new one. Using red cedar off-cuts destined for the scrapheap, the woodworking artisans cut, turned, sanded and shaped the timber pieces into a new honour board. Speaking at the handover ceremony last Wednesday at the Men’s Shed’s Peachester Road facilities, member Bob Carruthers was delighted the group could assist. “We are proud to be able to give something back to a service club such as Lions, which has given so much of themselves to the local community over the years,” he said. “We know that the workmanship which has gone into this honour board will see it through the next forty years of presidents … and when it’s full, please come back and we’ll be make another.”

President of the Beerwah Lions, Patricia Jutila, received the honour board with gratitude. “It’s wonderful to have such a beautiful piece which will grace our club for many years to come,” Patricia said. “We will make sure that the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed has their name prominently on the front as the creators.” To show their gratitude, the Lions Club made a $250 donation to the Men’s Shed to put towards one of their projects. Patricia will have a particular connection to both honour boards, as she is the last president listed on the old one and the first listed on the new one.

When will YOU learn?
by Ian Hall, from All Energy HQ A local couple I have known for 16 years told me a story this week. A door-to-door salesman called at their house one Friday afternoon. He was selling solar which they were quite interested in, as they had recently asked us to quote. The salesman wasn’t able to answer many of their questions but he was sure he knew what they needed to wipe out their $850 bill completely. So they purchased two solar systems, each of 6kW in size with two 3-phase inverters. What the salesman didn’t know or care was by exceeding the Energex 5kW inverter size limit, they could not export any surplus electricity back to the grid. The salesman did not know that the house was not connected to a 3-phase electricity supply. The salesman said these two systems would eliminate the $850 power bill. This salesman insisted that they sign the agreement that Friday evening if they wanted the ‘special deal’. They signed. After it was installed they learned they had to call in another electrician to have 3-phase power connected. They also learned they would get no – yes no export – payment. Then they learned their power bill is still huge, because the two systems are producing more power than they could use in the daylight hours, remember they cannot export their unused power, and they still have to pay for the power they use at night. The lesson is that this door-to-door salesman knew almost nothing about the solar rules, but he promised the customers everything they wanted to hear, which was in no way related to the truth. They were an out of town Gold Coast company which has since closed down. And guess what, the salesman also knew very little about solar or the Energex rules, but I’ll bet he knew about his fat commission for selling something as big as this (two systems for one home). Buyer beware!

Inigo Jones memorabilia Memorabilia of heritage significance was returned to Peachester recently, when the family of long-range weather forecaster Inigo Jones donated several Jones family treasures to the Peachester History Committee (PHC). Dmitri Koroloff and Naomi Love, grandchildren of Inigo Jones, met with representatives of the PHC to present a pastel portrait of Inigo, framed studio portrait of his wife Marion, Inigo’s personal desk set and business cards, together with several of his early publications. They will form part of the PHC’s extensive Inigo Jones Collection, contributing more insight into his life and research. Inigo Jones (1872-1954) came to Peachester with his parents in 1892, settling on the property they called ‘Crohamhurst’. Prior to this, Inigo had worked for Clement Wragge, the State Government Meteorologist, and he brought with him a set of weather instruments which he set up in the garden at ‘Crohamhurst’. Soon after the family moved to Peachester, and on February 2, 1893 Inigo measured the record rainfall for Australia which still stands, 35.71 inches (907mm) in 24 hours. Weather observation and forecasting became his life-long passion. In 1935 he established the Crohamhurst Observatory, where he continued to observe and research weather phenomena until his death in 1954. Inigo Jones believed that an understanding of Australia’s extreme weather patterns would be crucial to the future of primary industries in this country. The Peachester History Committee has a special interest in Peachester’s most famous resident to date; and with the help of the Jones family the group has built up a significant collection of historical photographs, Naomi Love (left) and Dmitri Koroloff documents and memorabilia (right) with PHC members Jeff Bodley, relating to Inigo’s predictions Jan Gresham and Helen Page and study of the weather.

Popular entertainment at show
There are a number of highlights to experience at the Maleny Show every year. Visitors have access to a smorgasbord of agriculturally-inspired activities and one particularly popular attraction is the annual sheep and dog demonstrations and mustering. Hosted by Dale Formosa from the Shaundar Herding School, there will be several shows daily. The demonstrations will be featured over both days of the show held at the Maleny Showgrounds on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28. Throughout his life Dale has always been involved with working dogs and he enjoys a natural affinity with the animals which is evident in the demonstrations. Growing up, Dale wanted to learn more about working dogs and so he started competing in sheep dog trials, initially in New Zealand and then throughout the world. Now living in Australia he has successfully competed in ‘Three-sheep dog trialling’ in both Queensland and New South Wales. With the knowledge and experience he has gained over the years, Dale decided to pass this knowledge onto others in a bid to ensure that the sport of three-sheep dog trialling continues for many years to come. He currently runs classes and clinics with people coming from all over Queensland and New South Wales. Students range from people who wish to simply give their working dog breeds some exposure and introduction to their natural abilities and have a bit of fun, to people/families that have become hooked on the sport and are now seriously competing in it. Students from Dale’s classes have enjoyed high grading in current competitions around Queensland and New South Wales, and visitors to the Maleny Show can witness the skill and knowledge that Dale uses to train his own dogs in what promise to be highly entertaining demonstrations. To prevent any nasty surprises, locals need to be aware that the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) has recently changed the speed limits on Beerburrum Road on the northern side of the Elimbah shops. Travelling south, Beerburrum Road is now a 60km/hr zone (changed from 80km/hr) leading up the shops, connecting it to the existing 60km/hr zone leading to the Elimbah township.

By Lea Parkes I recently caught up with Landsborough local and Collins Bookshop owner Julie Fisher and we got talking about an upcoming author signing with Caloundra author P.J. Parker (Pam) at Julie’s bookshop in Caloundra on Saturday, May 14 at 10.00am. While Julie understands that ‘The Long Goodbye’ may not be a book that will interest all readers, she said it is rather extraordinary and even more intriguing when you know it was written from personal experience and she would love to invite locals to come along and meet Pam and have their books signed. “On 13th October my father killed my mother” and so begins this extraordinarily moving and powerful memoir of an Australian family. Spanning three generations of a rural Queensland farming family, ‘The Long Goodbye’ is an unforgettable story of love and loss by an outstanding new writer of originality and remarkable skill. When Pamela's ageing mother succumbs to advanced dementia and the family attempts to care as best they can for her, it is her father who takes matters into his own hands and ends her mother's life before taking his own life several weeks later. ‘The Long Goodbye’ takes you into the life of this family, revealing the grit and resilience which has always driven them as well as the love that binds them together through the years. At times hilariously funny, at times tragic and shocking, ‘The Long Goodbye’ is ultimately a grand story of love and the unbreakable bonds of marriage and family set against the harsh and unforgiving realities of life on the land. Disastrous floods, drought, and farming accidents, mean that life and death are never far apart. The Australian landscape is evoked in all its beauty, but its danger is inescapable. Pamela writes with incredible honesty and warmth about her own parents, grandparents and extended family, their celebrations, their wit and great humour whilst never shying from the dark truths and difficult struggles that plague them too. ‘The Long Goodbye’ illustrates the devastation of dementia and its terrible consequences for an entire family, as well as her father’s controversial and unspeakable solution in euthanasia. ‘The Long Goodbye’ is a true story of impossible beauty and sadness, and the story of a remarkable love that could be no other way. Collins Bookshop is located at 24 Bulcock Street, Caloundra. Look out for our competition to win an autographed copy of the book in next week's edition.

Community News
According to information from DTMR, the changes are in response to a request from Moreton Bay Regional Council, which in turn was reflecting community concerns about the road speed along that stretch of road. As a consequential result, the 80km/hr zone has been extended north to meet the minimum speed limit length standards, and to include the curved section of Beerburrum Road. This curved section was previously in a 100km/hr zone. Police actively patrol and monitor speeds along this road … so make sure you take note of the new signage and speed zones before you find out the hard way. www.gcnews.com.au

Dog Shows The Sunshine Coast Kennel Club’s next Dog Shows will be on Friday to Sunday, May 13, 14 and 15, commencing at 5.00pm on Friday and Saturday and 8.30am on Sunday. The Friday and Saturday shows commence with Sweepstakes for Baby Puppies and Puppies and with Junior Handlers (children from ages 7 to 18 handling dogs competitively in three age-classes). After these the normal breed judging of the Championship Show will occur through to Best in Show each day. Judging on Sunday begins at 8.30am with the Open Show and the Championship Show gets underway at 9.00am. All events are held at the Beerwah Sportsground, Roberts Road, Beerwah. Entry is free. These shows will have four rings operating simultaneously on Friday and Saturday, and eleven rings on Sunday. There will be a very good entry of dogs covering numerous different breeds. Many of these will be the regular favourites but there will also be unusual and rare breeds shown as well. If you have never seen a Dogue De Bordeaux, a Peruvian Hairless Dog or a Lagotto Romagnolo, then come along – we have some entered. Judging is alphabetical by breed so Afghan Hounds and Australian Terriers will be on early while Welsh Corgis and Weimaraners will be in the ring later. However, with only four rings operating there will be two groups judged one after the other in three of the rings, and this may affect the time at which a breed you would like to see is judged. We do encourage any and all to come along and enjoy our show. Exhibitors are more than willing to chat about their breeds and the showing is quite amazing and interesting to watch. There will be ‘doggy product’ stalls and other stalls of interest. Superb catering is provided at the canteen and also a Coffee Van on the grounds.
Grants for local arts projects More than 20 Sunshine Coast artists, creative arts workers and arts organisations received a financial boost recently following Sunshine Coast Council’s endorsement of $62,395 in grants through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). This round of grant funding will support a range of artists from various sectors including musicians, ceramicists, writers, visual artists, singers and dancers, as well as concept development for a new-media light work for an arts festival. Some of the successful applicants include Hinterland Business Centre who received $1,800 for their Pente Poets–Art4Place–Hinterland Business Centre Hinterland Poetry Trail Design Project. Former President of the Landsborough Museum Lance Paterson received $1,500 funding for this editing work on ‘Wreck-ollections: ships & shipwrecks in Queensland waters: volume 4’. Lindsay Pollock from Bald Knob has received funding for Dangerous Song digital album creation with audio, video and photographic content. Funding will also assist Sharon Garson of Maleny who will be presenting at NCECA [National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts] conference in the US and running a series of workshops. The RADF program is open for applications all year round with assessment taking place over four funding periods during the year. The RADF program includes six funding categories: • Individual development • Mentorships • Concept development • Major projects • Seed funding (three years) • Interest-free loans To be considered in the next assessment period, applications must be submitted by June 1, 2016. Glasshouse Country Chamber update Earlier this year the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce took the move to shake up their approach to both general and networking meetings with a stronger focus on the social element of the events. Then as a real shake up, they decided instead of having the meeting on the third Wednesday of the month, meetings would be held on the 15th of every month. This has seen them have a variety of events including a Friday night at Pasta d’Vine and tapas at Vianta Café in Beerwah.
However for something completely different, their next event will be a barbeque breakfast at The Lookout at Glass House Mountains, that will be at a cost of between $5.00 and $8.00 and will be catered for by the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains. The whole family are invited and there will be a special guest ‘Ivon Northage’ who will share his knowledge about the Mountains and, for those that are so inclined, there is be an 800m walk. If you are a business owner / operator in the local area and would like this informal opportunity to meet up for some casual networking then you should definitely think about coming along. RSVP will be required to the Chamber’s Secretary Libby Brown by 4.00pm, Tuesday, May 10 by phone on 5438 7221 or email libbybrown@westnet. com.au The Chamber are also seeking feedback about whether or not to continue with meeting on the 15th of each month or whether meetings should be held on Tuesday or Wednesday on the third week of the month at 5.30 for 6pm, or at 6 for 6.30pm, as well as what, as a business, you expect from your chamber of commerce. If you have any thoughts please send them through to libbybrown@westnet.com.au
Council looking for Mary Cairncross refreshment vendors With the redevelopment of the facilities at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve commencing, the Sunshine Coast Council is keen to ensure that visitors to the park still have the chance to warm themselves with a hot coffee and some light refreshments. Council is calling for locals interested in operating a refreshment van on a temporary basis to contact them for details on how to make a permit application. The applicant will need to have their own mobile facility and ideally be available to operate seven days a week. The permit will allow the person to operate the van until December 16 during the redevelopment – but this may be extended depending on the construction timeframes. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay is eager for potential operators to apply. “I would like to encourage local food and coffee providers to take up this wonderful opportunity,” she said. “The opportunity to have or share a cup of coffee at the reserve is a service valued by all. It’s not only enjoyed by locals but visitors to the region as well.” If you’d like to know more, see the Council advertisement on page six of this week’s edition.

Volunteers – ten regular community members tend to the needs of this hall. Can you volunteer a few hours now and then? We need someone in the community who would consider putting a few hours into the front garden. It needs weeding, trimming and tidying up. Be community proud please. DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
This federal election your vote will help shape Australia. To learn more

Another small business supported
Transportable Shade Sheds in collaboration with Saver6. com continues to offer small business owners around the country the opportunity to enjoy a lifestyle change and embrace the possibility of owning a business that fits in with their personal vision for a more balanced and sustainable life. Trent Walton from Narrabri in New South Wales is yet another Saver6.com small business owner who is now enjoying a viable career change that will allow him to earn while being able to spend more time with his family. Additionally, supported by the business confidence that Saver6.com provides with its comprehensive ongoing cloud based marketing and mentoring support; Trent realised his vision to move on from his long term career in underground mining. Having spent over 14 years underground, Trent was keen to try a different lifestyle and career choice that would allow him to see more of his family – as well as allowing him to get back working above ground and enjoy the sunshine. With the business model offered through the collaboration of Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com, Trent saw the real possibility of changing his life and being his own boss. Trent was originally looking to purchase a shed for himself at home which then led him to discover Transportable Shade Sheds online and the opportunity to own his own business. Global Business Manager of locally based Transportable Shade Sheds, Tyler Maclaren made contact and Trent and Tyler travelled to Narrabri NSW to meet up and discuss the possibility of Trent making this lifestyle change. Sensing a way to achieve a more viable work / life balance with an Australian made and manufactured product; Trent decided to purchase a tradie trailer package and establish his business ‘Gotcha Covered’ in November last year. With a full training course provided, as well as daily motivation, support and marketing all backed by an Australian Made product, Trent has all the equipment, contacts and business support needed to establish and maintain a viable business. “It was a really easy process to purchase the mobile trailer package – very easy and hassle free. Tyler was really good to deal with and very approachable. He was always available to answer any questions throughout all stages of the process,” said Trent. Over the last five months, Trent has received a lot of interest in his business and is building up a solid business presence both online and in his area. He is also enthusiastic about the genuine possibility of being his own boss and moving on from underground mining and time away from his partner and kids. “I’m very happy with my decision to buy the trailer from Transportable Shade Sheds – I should be able to now achieve my long term goals of leaving the mining industry and be able to spend more time with my family,” said Trent. If you know a business or individual anywhere near Narrabri in New South Wales looking for shade, Gotcha Covered is a one-stop-shop and it’s a local business supporting the Narrabri region. Gotcha Covered can cover anything from cars to caravans and boats or just about anything on the farm like machinery, tractors and livestock! Don’t wait, call Trent Walton on 0418 905 421 or follow Gotcha Covered: Transportable Shade Sheds on Facebook. If you’re looking for a fantastic opportunity to change your life – why don’t you contact Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300667433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620. Opportunities are available around Australia, so even if this isn’t for, why don’t you let someone else you know about this because it may also change their life. Business feature

Environment Sun shines on council’s solar farm project Sunshine Coast Council’s quest to become Australia’s first local government to offset its entire electricity consumption from green energy is powering ahead, with Mayor Mark Jamieson announcing last Wednesday that Downer has been awarded the tender to construct a 15 megawatt (MW) solar farm on council-owned land. Mayor Jamieson said Sunshine Coast Council would become the nation’s first local government to build a utility scale, grid-connected solar farm. “The 15MW solar farm, covering 24 hectares of a 49 hectare site at Valdora, will be the biggest solar farm in Queensland – the next largest being the Gatton Solar Farm at 3.3MW – and the fifth largest solar farm in the nation,” Mayor Jamieson said. “By 2017 it will offset 100% of the organisation’s electricity consumption across all its facilities and operations, with solar energy going into the grid. “That includes our administration buildings, swimming pools, performance venues and community centres, our holiday parks, libraries and art gallery and our sport and recreation facilities. “Most other governments are still talking about offsetting 50% of their energy needs from renewables by 2025 so our 100% offset puts us way ahead of the game and that’s a win for our environment and our community. “And it doesn’t stop there. The solar farm is also estimated to save this council millions of dollars over a 30-year period based on today’s electricity costs, which are anticipated to increase substantially in the future. “This project will see us proactively take control of our electricity supply, isolating council from increased price risk. “The Sunshine Coast Solar Farm will, at its peak, generate 15,000 kilowatts of electricity from the sun. Over one year, the solar farm will generate sufficient electricity to power approximately 5000 homes.”
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Not just a lichen Though lichens are found everywhere, they are actually quite extraordinary, consisting of a symbiosis between two different organisms – a fungus and either an alga or a cyanobacterium. The non-fungal partner manufactures carbohydrates through photosynthesis, and this is then ‘harvested’ by the fungus. Lichens are more than the sum of their parts. They synthesise more than 800 substances, many of which are found nowhere else in nature. They are also extremely adaptable, being found from ice-free polar regions, to the tropics, in rainforests and deserts, and from intertidal zones to alpine peaks. They grow on a variety of substances including natural rock, soil, bark, wood and artificial surfaces such as bitumen, glass and concrete. Their only Achilles heel is air pollution, especially sulphur dioxide, hence few lichens are found in smoggy urban areas. Lichens are vital components of natural ecosystems, being the first organisms to colonise barren surfaces, preparing the area for plants by trapping moisture and wind-blown organic matter, and acting as effective soil/sand binders and erosion control. Lichens fix atmospheric nitrogen, making this available to plants following the death and decay of the lichen. Lichens provide food for herbivores, and food, shelter and protection for many invertebrates. Some birds use pieces of lichen to build their nests, adding camouflage. Many insects are known to have associations with lichens. Lichens also provide food, medicines and dyes for humans, and I suspect that the full extent of their value is yet to be discovered. Voting in the inaugural Glass House Small Business Awards ends on Friday, May 6 and local member, Andrew Powell, is reminding the community to get your vote counted. “Since going live with the final list of nominated businesses in early April we have been inundated with votes from across the region. It is just so wonderful to see how much support we are getting for our small business owners and their hardworking staff. “I know I keep saying it but small businesses really are a vital part of our regional community as they provide us with the necessary goods and services that we require to function in our everyday life and they provide the local jobs. “Most small businesses also give back to our local community by supporting financially or in kind, our volunteer organisations and local schools so they deserve to be acknowledged for their service. Mr Powell, with support from the local Chambers of Commerce, launched his Small Business Awards as a way of recognising the efforts of small businesses and their employees and offering them the opportunity to have public acknowledgment for their ongoing contribution. All nominated businesses and or employees have been invited to attend a Gala event to be held during Queensland Small Business Week in May. “The business and employee in each region with the most amount of votes will pick up a Bronze Glassy. The Silver Glassy will be presented by the Chamber of Commerce Presidents - true recognition by your peers - to a business and employee in each region that is delivering above and beyond. “The coveted Gold Glassy will go to one business and one employee from across the Glass House electorate - selected from the nominated Bronze and Silver category winners. “Time is running out to make sure you visit my website and vote for your favourite business or employee before 6 May,” Mr Powell said. Beerwah’s cenotaph delivered for ANZAC Day
Every ANZAC Day is special, but this year was especially touching in Beerwah where the recently relocated cenotaph was unveiled. I was really proud to work with the local RSL clubs and RSL Queensland, on this important project which enabled the Beerwah community’s cenotaph to be relocated to Turner Park, allowing it to stand as a continuing memorial to our fallen soldiers for the future. The relocation of the cenotaph, gravel pathways, paving and concrete elements, and planting was all completed quickly and efficiently, and new uplights illuminated the cenotaph beautifully during the dawn service. Completing the project was a real demonstration of the community working together. Beerwah Men’s Shed, the outgoing Beerwah-Peachester RSL and the new Beerwah and District RSL Sub-Branch all worked together to relocate the cenotaph in time to provide an impressive and appropriate new location for this year’s Beerwah ANZAC Day service, and many more to come.

Glass House District Park – Page Street
Following the analysis of community consultation completed last June, council has finalised the landscape concept report and plan for Glass House District Park – Page Street. The Glass House District Park combines Glass House Mountains Environmental Reserve, Page Park, Dana Close Reserve, Smerdon Way Park and Banksia Park. This project involves the development of a landscape concept report which will inform the future plans for the development of the parkland. The focus of the project will look to rationalise and improve the current landscape treatments and provide new infrastructure as appropriate. Council recently constructed Page Street pathway which is the initial stage of works for the Glass House District Park. This pathway provides a key link from Coonowrin Road to the parkland and is the start of the greater pathway network. In the following months council will install the first phase of the playground for the parkland and an additional pathway which will connect the newly installed pathway to the playground area. The playground equipment will complement and acknowledge the natural setting. The climbing structure will be the first in Australia of this product.

Landsborough School of Arts and Memorial Hall is not just any hall, it is home to our ANZAC Spirit
The Landsborough School of Arts and Memorial Hall is 92 years old this year and is a living piece of Australia’s history following World War 1. The hall was built by local volunteers and returned soldiers on land transferred to Trustees by John Henry Edward Tytherleigh in 1921. The iconic hall was designed by Mr W M Falconer, and its architecture went on to define the historic town. It is one of 1400 memorials in Queensland that were established as a tangible symbol of national mourning. The hall was officially opened on the May 4, 1924, by the Governor General of Queensland Rt. The Honourable Lieutenant Colonel Sir Matthew Nathan, GCMG. It was opened with tremendous pomp and ceremony and included a symbolic procession of returned soldiers from the railway station to toward the hall. The tale of the hall is one of determination and pride and lives today as the embodiment of the Anzac spirit. With just 527 pounds at the outset, a fundraising event was held as part of a ‘stump capping’ ceremony on the November 24, 1923, where the committee demonstrated their dedication to bring the dream to fruition. An afternoon of wood chopping and cross cut sawing competitions, art union prizes, a dance and concert set the tone for how the hall would be used once erected and how important the work of volunteers and fundraising efforts would be in years to come. For many years the hall was used for dances, a picture theatre and generally as a community meeting place. From 1993 the hall has been managed by a committee of volunteers incorporated under The Associations Incorporation Act. Today the committee continues to fight tirelessly to keep the hall alive and well maintained, as its importance and relevance to the local community is as strong as ever. The Landsborough School of Arts and Memorial Hall is an active community centre which hosts Rhee Tae Kwon Do, Pilates, dance classes, singing groups and craft lessons. A market is held there every Saturday and two churches hold services in it on Sunday. The Committee need your help. The Committee meets on the first Thursday of each month February to December at 7.00pm. New members most welcome. The Committee is also looking for photographs or memorabilia associated with the hall to assist with research into a book on the history of the hall. If you can help in any way or would like further information, please contact the committee on, 5439 9399 or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Landsborough-School-ofArts-Memorial-Hall-Assoc-Inc.

Tuina Massage
with Cristina, Soulqi Massage & Accupuncture I specialize in Tuina Massage (Oriental Remedial), a form of therapeutic Chinese bodywork, commonly used to treat imbalances in the body. In my treatment, I utilize acu-pressure and a broad range of hand techniques to stimulate certain areas on the body defined by meridians and /or acu-points. I also incorporate basic reflexology (foot massage) as a relaxing way to treat and energize the body through the many acu-points located in the feet. I am very passionate about the healing power of Tuina and the wide scope of conditions that it can treat as a stand-alone therapy or in synergy with acupuncture for the treatment of chronic conditions and other diseases. Prevention is sure better than cure. Tuina can and should be used to maintain health and prevent accumulation of stress and injury in the body. School News ANZAC tributes
Peachester State School students last week attended ANZAC Day tributes across four locations including Canberra. Jacob Barbeler was chosen to present a wreath, on behalf of his school, at the Australian War Memorial Last Post Ceremony (held daily at 4.55pm) on Thursday, April 21. On the same day our Year 5 and 6 students travelled to ANZAC Square in Brisbane for the Brisbane Students’ ANZAC Service. School captains Kobe and Jessie presented a wreath alongside students from many schools from throughout the greater Brisbane area. Friday, April 22, Peachester State School held a lovely service at the school’s own ANZAC Memorial Garden. Our honouree guests were Mr Len Sousaari and his wife Myra, representing Beerwah and Districts RSL Sub-branch. Many thanks to Peachester’s own bugle player Katie Jardine, for a wonderful Last Post playing. It’s always great for the children to hear and watch someone playing live. Representative students from each class presented their own hand-made wreaths. Our senior students wore commemorative badges representing World War One fallen soldiers from the Beerwah-Peachester area and each of these students laid a poppy in our garden. RSL Community Link Project undertook this project for the Centenary of ANZAC. Our students were very grateful and proud to be able to acknowledge and pay respect to the service of these brave local sons. The commemorative badges were again, worn on ANZAC Day when 40 of our students proudly participated in the Beerwah ANZAC March. Our school captain Jessie P laid a wreath on behalf of our school on Beerwah’s beautiful new cenotaph in Turner Park. Lest we Forget! School Captains Kobe B and Jessie P laid a wreath in Anzac Square

Landsborough remembers
Landsborough State School students experienced a memorable week, where they were able to commemorate the 101 years of ANZAC history. All classes have been learning about ANZAC Day. This has been reinforced by a number of ceremonies in which the students have been involved. On Thursday, April 21, the Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Brisbane to attend the ANZAC Commemoration for students in ANZAC Square. They joined more than 1,500 other students from across southeast Queensland for a special day of remembrance, gratitude and national pride. It was an opportunity for all students to absorb themselves in the war history and to reflect on the spirit of the ANZAC. School Captains, Madison and Ryan, had the opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of the school at the eternal flame. On Friday, April 22, more than 350 staff, students and special guests gathered for the school's annual ANZAC Day service. Led by the student leaders, the ceremony was a moving tribute to honour all service personnel, both past and present. Students particularly enjoyed listening to the stories told by the guest speakers from our Armed Forces. Monday, 25 April, saw the school participate in the Landsborough community ANZAC day events. This included the Dawn Service, the Wreath Laying Ceremony and the service in the Community Hall. As they marched down Cribb Street, every student proudly held a mini Australian flag in their hand, waving it enthusiastically. Onlookers applauded and cheered as the parade passed by. The spirit and enthusiasm shown by everyone proves the ANZAC legacy is in safe hands with the next generation.

'The hills are alive' in Glenview! Last Wednesday, 31 senior students from Glenview State School were privileged to attend the Brisbane performance of The Sound of Music. As part of the school's extension music program, students are given the opportunity to travel and view a stage musical every year, which is always a popular event. The show did not disappoint, with leads Cameron Daddo and Amy Lehpamer playing the roles of Captain Von Trapp and Maria. The supporting cast of children, who themselves are students from towns around Queensland, were inspiring for Glenview students. It reminded them, that with discipline to their musical studies, and a good dash of confidence, they might one day be singing "The hills are alive" too!

You Said It Good work
Firstly, thank you to The Happy Snack Company for making each day that they are cooking smell most delicious. It flows straight through our house. Certainly not complaining about this smell! Secondly, I'd like to thank The Coffee Club in Beerwah for their on-going fantastic customer service. They are all so friendly and bubbly when I go for a coffee, and of course a big smile always on their faces, which is rare to get from people these days. Keep up the good work everyone! No to dual lanes
I have recently come to live in the Glasshouse Mountains. Even though my home is set back off the highway a bit, I can still hear the roar of traffic - more so at certain times. I feel it would be a great pity and hardship for many residents if traffic flow was increased by creating a dual-lane system on Steve Irwin Way. Hwa Rogers Glass House Mountains
Not so noble times
The shabby and transparent recall of parliament by the current Prime Minister to orchestrate a double dissolution election is a cynical act which forces us to reflect on more noble times in our Federal parliament. It is an indisputable historical fact that the Labor Government under the leadership of Kevin Rudd and Treasurer Wayne Swan saved Australia, when the USA Lehman Brothers bubble suddenly burst sending shock waves around the world and many other nations and their innocent but helpless citizens to the wall. The Liberal Party has displayed convenient collective mental amnesia about the Global Financial Crisis, but it is simply the truth that Rudd and Swan moved decisively to Guarantee Australian Banks to save a run, and quickly stimulated the economy to keep people working and paying tax. Although revenue dropped significantly as our markets could not avoid all the shock, we have survived and prospered while larger economies are still damaged. Small business was magnificent at the time,

some staff lost work but doors remained open. Labor saved our Triple A credit ratings (all three) and the economy kept growing. The Labor Government received world wide praise at the time for its financial management in handling the crisis. Remember this is recent history. Over coming weeks we will hear much from a disunited Liberal Government about Labor's Debt and Deficit Disaster (Abbott’s mantra). The debt, following the GFC, was small by world standards but has doubled under the Liberals while they swap leaders and fail to generate any meaningful policies. So much for the conservatives alleged financial management ability. Now, what's the answer to Australia's financial dilemma? It is staring us all in the face, Simply come close to death and pay some tax. The recent global tax scandal confirms Australian Companies have ample ability to be lifters rather than leaners. But instead of that 38% of corporate entities (some of them household names) paid no tax in 2013/14. In my opinion only a Labor Government after July 2016 will have any policies to maintain Australia’s financial position while restoring the funding to health and education stripped away by the Liberals in the Abbott / Hockey budget. Some in the Liberal party will want Malcolm Turnbull’s ascendancy to mean something, but while the current Prime Minister smiles for the camera Mr Abbott and his cronies (Brutus, Cassius and Casca) lurk in the background. A vote for Labor is the only meaningful choice especially in Fisher where Liberal infighting and farce has a significant track record. Michael Simpson Montville
this legislation in 1990 on the recommendations of the Electoral and Administrative Review Commission (EARC). (3) The Labor Party stated they made this sudden change in legislation to reduce the number of informal votes. The major benefit of optional preferential voting is the reduction of error-induced informal voting. OPV is the simplest form of preferential voting, and therefore least likely to lead the voter to invalidate his or her vote through numbering error. By way of example, in the 2009 Queensland state election, only 1.9% of votes were found to be informal. In the last federal election in 2013 the informal vote was 5.92%. (4) While OPV can result in a candidate without majority support being elected, the same is possible under a full preferential system. This is because the party that is ranked third in an electorate is in a position to arrange a preference deal resulting in the candidate with the lower primary vote being elected. Fiona Simpson MP was correct in saying this was a ‘dodgy’ change to the voting system as the Labor Party had no mandate, gave no notice, no public consultation, and avoided use of the parliamentary committee system. I think that illustrates the word ‘dodgy’ quite adequately. Joyce Newton Balmoral Ridge

Optional Preferential Voting
(1) The simplification in optional preferential voting (OPV) actually increases participation in the electoral system by allowing people to express their true intentions. OPV captures only those preferences that people actually wish to cast, rather than requiring them to express preferences for candidates about which they know nothing. In this regard, OPV empowers the voter. (2) Labor Premier Peter Beattie did not introduce OPV legislation. Premier Wayne Goss brought on

How can you stay satisfied with your home loan? Home loans can take a very long time to pay off – about 30 years tends to be the industry standard. Plenty can change over that amount of time, and we aren’t just talking about the interest rate. You could decide that you aren’t happy with your current loan provider. A recent Roy Morgan poll, for example, revealed that people were losing confidence in the four big banks, with home loan customer satisfaction dropping compared to last year. Thankfully, however, there are alternatives to big banks. Mortgages can come from all sorts of different lenders, and a mortgage broker can help you find them. So how can we help you stay satisfied with your home loan? Is it time to reweigh your home loan? 22

Start as you mean to finish The easiest way to deal with this problem is to make sure you don’t run into it in the first place. People often stick with their current bank or previous lenders when it comes to home loan, and that may be okay for the time being. You may be very satisfied with your bank and be willing to pay a potentially higher rate than you would otherwise for them to be your mortgage supplier. However, many people don’t seem to realise that the credit market is a competitive one. The reason that mortgage brokers exist is to ensure that you get as many options as possible. Start as you mean to finish with your home loan – go to a mortgage broker

and get the full story. Refinance if you need to Good credit is a valuable commodity, and one you can use to negotiate a better rate. There may come a time when you want to leverage that good credit you’ve been earning in order to get a lower interest rate throughrefinancing your loan. Perhaps you want to buy an investment property or go on a really fantastic holiday, so you need to access the equity in your home. This gives you an opportunity to see what other lenders can offer you for being your customer. Good credit is a valuable commodity, and one you can use to negotiate a better rate. If you’re
part of the two in three Australians that CoreLogic RP Data reports are concerned about the property market, it pays to make the most of your home loan and remain satisfied with your lender. So if you’re feeling unsatisfied with your loan, get in touch with a mortgage broker and see how you can improve your situation!

Eastern Devotional Music I have long been attracted to the great Indian music traditions and, like many fellow music travellers, spent time in India searching them out. What fascinates me, still to this day, is the extraordinary scope of Indian music to allow for the most imaginative and virtuosic improvisations while working within strict structural, rhythmic and melodic frameworks. Indian musicians such as Ravi Shankar and now his daughters Anoushka and Nora have reached huge western audiences with their music, and others, such as the percussionist Trilok Gurtu, have used their traditional eastern skills to expand and create fascinating crossovers in the western jazz world. Western musicians such as the British violinist Yehudi Menuhin and guitarist John McLaughlin have similarly provided inroads into the Indian traditions through their explorations and promotion of that work. Closer to home we have musicians working in Australia and schooled in both Indian and western music such as Brisbane guitarist Toby Wren and Tunji Beier who lives in the Maleny area. They work in the jazz and world music areas and imbue everything they do with their rich musical heritage. I was fortunate the other week to attend a concert of Eastern Devotional Music at the Lift Gallery near Maleny. Sufi Soul Sangeet and the Kirtaniyas united to offer a magical performance of Eastern devotional music. If you have heard the music of the great Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – and you may well have without knowing his name, then you’ll know what I heard at Lift. Now Nusrat was the untouched master of this great Sufi vocal tradition, and he is no longer with us, but he scaled the heights and left his mark and it is simply enchanting to have young musicians emulating him, and surely other masters of the form. Sufi Soul Sangeet feature voice and harmonium (keyboard) in their performances and collaborated wonderfully with the Kirtaniyas – a vocal trio that accompanies itself with harmonium, bansuri (Indian flute), hand cymbals and a virtuosic showing on mrdanga (south Indian / carnatic drum) and tablas (north Indian drums). I have never heard the tablas and the mrdanga played together in the same music, as they represent two different traditions, but in the hands of these masterful young musicians there was no question of the effectiveness of the music they made. This was indeed a heavenly music – an ecstatic marriage between Sufi and Vaishnav devotional music, and for those of us in the audience, it was wildly exhilarating! Have an enchanting, musical month!

All aboard Destination Blues at Glasshouse Mountains Tavern
By Sonia Clark Destination Blues is a historic steam train journey that runs periodically from Roma Street Station in Brisbane to Glass House Mountains and back. Along the way passengers listen to a selection of blues musicians. Arriving at Glass House Mountains, passengers disembark and head over to the Glass House Blues Arcadia will headline the next Mountains Tavern to listen to live Destination Blues Event blues entertainment including a high calibre headline. The great news for locals is that that you can head along to Glasshouse Mountains Tavern whenever these events are on and experience the ‘Destination Blues’ afternoon of entertainment including the headline act for free. Venue manager Rachael Welch says, “It’s an awesome event that lets the city meet the country and it really puts the town on the map. Locals are welcome and the event gets between 320 and 350 people through the doors.” The next trip is scheduled for Saturday, May 28. If you are thinking of doing the train trip then it is worth booking your tickets early as the last ‘blues train’ sold out – otherwise rock up to the tavern at the end of this month from 4.00pm onwards and experience the exceptional musicianship of ‘Blues Arcadia’. Containing the award-winning song writing partnership of members from the acclaimed ‘Bella Reunion’, ‘Blues Arcadia’ formed earlier this year and will play three sets supported by other blues acts. Dine In
with Sonia Clark
Take Out The Lookout Cafe This month Lea and I headed back up to the always picturesque outlook and tranquil location of The Lookout Café. Arriving at around 11.00am, we thought that we would take advantage of the ‘All Day Breakfast’ menu and order a more brunch inspired selection. While we were ordering a number of different diners came in and the cafe filled up well while we were eating – obviously the combination of food with a view was proving popular at that time of day. Lea was tempted by the salmon and cream cheese baguette served with a side of salad and I couldn’t resist the avo smash on toasted Turkish bread with feta and blistered tomatoes. My dish usually comes with bacon but I took the vegetarian option. It is always great to see local businesses supporting other local businesses and even though I don’t eat bacon I noticed that all the bacon and ham supplied comes from Barry’s Family Butchers at
Beerwah. The café’s Auswana coffee is also locally grown and roasted, with the 100% Arabica blend pesticide, insecticide and GM free. The cafe also sells locally produced jams and honey to take home, including tropical jam favourites such as mango and peach along with the intriguing dragon fruit flavoured jam. Local honey is a mixed blossom variety that captures the natural flora of the Glass House Mountains. There is quite a lot of choice in the ‘All Day Breakfast’ – toast can be gluten free as required and the options range from the light and healthy to the more decadent and then more traditional options. The pancakes looked good with either buttermilk ($12.00) or blueberry ($14.00) on offer and who can go past a side of maple syrup and ice-cream for breakfast! More waistline friendly choices include mixed berries with Greek yogurt topped with crunchy
muesli ($10.00) and eggs on toast ($8.00). The Big Lookout Breakfast (bacon, eggs, tomato, mushrooms, hash brown and toast) and Vegetarian Breakfast (two eggs, hash browns, tomato, mushrooms and baked beans on your choice of toast) are both $16.00 but looked way too filling, so Lea and I stuck to slightly lighter options. The dessert cabinet always catches my eye and with the entire selection of cakes and slices at $6.50 served with either cream or icecream – who could resist a sweet treat? The red velvet muffins looked incredible and would possibly have to be the largest muffin I have seen! The food is beautifully presented; the view is divine and the service is quick and friendly – a great spot for some time out or if you would like to showcase the area to visitors. Open 9.00am to 3.00pm weekdays and 9.00am to 4.00pm on weekends, the kitchen shuts an hour before closing time daily, which means you have to order something from the sweets cabinet!

Upfront now Unplugged The old Upfront Club site has been refreshed, rebranded and reopened on Wednesday, April 27 as Sarah’s Unplugged, with owner Sarah Castaldi at the helm. From all accounts it was a huge success with locals and visitors alike dropping in to check it out. “Our first day has been amazing. I even had one of my regulars from the cafe, waiting for us to open at 6.45am just so he could have the first coffee and first meal here,” Sarah said. Tina from GC&M News spoke to some of the patrons and this is what they had to say.
Neal Charlton and Carolyna Lovely: “We’ve been waiting for Sarah to open. We’ve been fans of her food for a long time and love her new cafe. It’s fabulous, so open, clean and bright.”
Sandie Steindl, Joy Marshall and Errol Morrison (from Bli Bli): Sandie and Joy – “We’ve been in the region for 30 years and give it a huge thumbs up. We’ve been waiting to have Sarah’s food in town. Everything is delicious and it feels like the original Maleny Kitchen all over again.”

Out & About Rotary Community Grants Presentation Earlier this year The Rotary Club of Maleny invited applications for grants from community groups and organisations that run, manage, conduct or implement programs or projects benefiting communities in the Maleny and Montville environs. On Wednesday night last week they were able to present cheques to 14 local community groups to support them on a number of projects. This year the club took a keen interest in projects that directly benefit the youth in our community. See the May 11 edition of GC&M News for more detail on the individual groups that were successful in receiving Rotary’s support.

The screenplay, written by Phyllis Nagy, is based on Patricia Highsmith’s romance novel ‘The Price of Salt ‘ (also known as Carol). The film stars Cate Blanchett as Carol, and Rooney Mara (Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) as Therese. Dinner at 6.00pm is catered by Wild Rocket @ Misty’s. What is your property worth?
One of the most important decisions you need to make when selling your property is setting the price. Your local real estate agent will conduct a market opinion on inspection of your property which will provide a true estimate. Be wary of agents who say they can achieve a high price without substantiating it with facts. Always remember that agents interpret the market, they do not create it. Overpricing is the most common reason properties fail to sell. The market opinion will be made based on evidence from: (a) data sources, for example, property data (b) recent advertisements (c) recent sales negotiated by the office (d) sales made by other agents; and or (e) any valuation from a registered valuer It is important that you agree on the price set and the agent believes it is realistic. If the price is unrealistically high, enquiry will be limited and the property will not sell. Method of sale - There are several ways you can choose to sell your property. The most common are auction or private treaty. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. Your agent will advise on the best method for you based on the type and location of the property, nature of the market and the preferred timeframe. Free market appraisal - As the real estate market twists and turns, it pays to keep an eye on the value of your property – so you always know where you stand. A property expert from Raine & Horne Beerwah can provide you with a ‘no obligation’ property appraisal advising you of your investment’s worth in today’s market. In the Garden
Jobs for the yard in May
• If your sweet pea seedlings are looking a little worse for wear due to all the rain, it’s not too late to replace them with new ones. • Grass growth will be starting to slow down now but weeds still grow. Keep on top of weeds, especially nutgrass, clover and tropical chickweed. • Bare rooted roses will be in stores this month but don’t rush in and buy, as the optimum time is the end of next month. • Gingers and heliconias that have finished flowering can be cut back now, leaving the new growth for next season’s flowering display. • Apply a light dusting of lime to bare veggie beds. Don’t apply fertiliser at the same time as the lime reacts with the nitrogen creating ammonia gas. • Plant leafy coriander plants now. The coming cooler temperatures will stop them bolting to seed. • Your strawberry plants should be coming on well now. Apply a little pelletised manure and use fish and seaweed solutions regularly over the plants to keep them in good health. It’s not too late to put some in if you haven’t yet. • Companion plant garlic with lettuce, parsnips and roses. Keep it away from beans, cabbage and strawberries. Companion plant cucumbers with basil, beans, broccoli, carrots, peas, parsnips, radish and lettuce, but keep away from potatoes. Vegetables Plant beetroot, silver beet, broad beans, onions, spring onions, peas, carrot, kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, turnip, capsicum, celery, beans, garlic, leeks, parsnip, peas, potatoes, sweet potato, tomato, broccoli, parsley, cabbage, cauliflower and coriander. Flowers Plant alyssum, marigold, petunia, calendula, cineraria, cornflower, dianthus, hollyhock, kale, lobelia, pansy, phlox, Iceland poppy, primula, snapdragon, statice, stock, sweet pea (seedling), viola, carnation, cyclamen, foxglove, gaillardia, salvia, sunflower and verbena.
Winter blues
Have you noticed the nights are getting cooler? And daytime temperature will start to drop soon too. Just like us, plants can get the winter blues and suffer in the cooler conditions. As the air temperature cools down, so does the soil temperature. This results in the soil microbes slowing down, not breaking down organic matter and making nutrients harder for the plant roots to absorb. So you will often see plants suffering some nutrient deficiencies during this time of the year. Citrus is a classic example, with their leaves turning yellow. Deciduous trees respond by taking the nutrients back from their leaves down into their roots. The leaves change colour and fall, giving us a spectacular display. Non-deciduous plants just suffer in silence, getting the winter blues. To perk them up, it’s a good idea to lay down a blanket of mulch around their roots to protect the soil from the cool night air. Also treat them to a drench of seaweed tonic (for the soil microbes) and a soluble fertiliser solution (something like Thrive) – unless it’s a phosphorus-sensitive native plant, in which case you’ll use a native specific fertiliser. Don’t forget that water soluble fertilisers leach out of the soil with rain, so don’t use it until there are about four or five days of dry weather predicted.
M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month We care about our environment
Hoya Vine or Wax Flower
Hoya australis Looking for a native climber that likes the shade, behaves politely, doesn’t take over your pergola and has delicate bunches of cream flowers with a lovely fragrance? Then look no further. The Hoya has dark green round fleshy leaves and likes shaded well-drained areas. In the wild, it is found often on the edge of rainforests as an understorey creeper. Its twining nature means it should be supported by a trellis or tree or along a fence. It can produce flowers all year round. Hoyas will even grow happily indoors as a pot plant or hanging basket. Outside, the Hoya can provide food for the Common Crow Butterfly and the flowers produce lots of nectar for a variety of birds and insects. If you would like to plant a Hoya at your place then come along to the nursery during the week where they are currently on sale.

GLASSHOUSE COMMUNITY CHURCH
From the churches Pastor Margaret Niethe - Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Many of us this week have participated in ANZAC Day services, remembering those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Each day we are confronted with news of a threat or possible threat of terrorism on our shores and on other shores; many of us have families that live in areas where this is a daily threat. Remembering the dedication of those who have given before and those who are giving time and sacrifice now, helps us cope with these modern day threats; however the knowledge of the supreme gift that ultimate sacrifice gives begins for me with the sacrificial love of Jesus. You may not know this man Jesus yet; however, all of this remembrance has lead to some different thoughts this year. I’m thinking about the futility of war. One of the enduring legacies of the Gallipoli campaign was the futility, even the reckless folly of it. The plan was ambitious GCNEWS Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM but markedly misguided. Many in ancient times

and even today think that the life and death of Jesus was futile and, yes, even misguided, but every fist shaken at God in anger is an act of utter foolishness. God is not mocked nor is he unaware of the defiance against him and his Son Jesus. This opposition is displayed in many ways; some openly mock the God of the Bible, others are passive in their opposition and simply refuse to acknowledge him for who he is. Each of us is facing a battle perhaps not as our brave hearts of the past battled, but a battle none the less, one in which each cannot possibly triumph without love and grace and remembering the gift we share because we are here, living in freedom, a freedom that another has paid the price for….

Twelve players from San Taekwondo competed last weekend at the Russel MacArthur Invitational Tournament. The team included three fighters making their debut and managed to win a total of five divisions. Local mums Jodi Chapman and LJ Newman both had their first ever fights and set their path towards the Pan Pacific Masters Games in November. They both drew tough opponents with Jodi fighting a much more experienced player and LJ giving away 10kgs. Jodi landed a good head kick and survived a knock down and standing eight count but eventually lost on points. LJ overcame a painful foot injury to finish the fight with a narrow loss. Jodi’s husband Luke Chapman came back to sparring after almost a 20 year break, losing by only a few points to an experienced black belt. 12-year-old blue belt Mitchel Bond also had a tough first fight against a 15 year old. He put on an outstanding and entertaining display, knocking his opponent down several times before losing on points. Mitch then had a second fight with an opponent closer to his size which he won convincingly. Emma Hall won her first fight and started strong in the final, building a good lead but had to withdraw due to injury and take the silver medal. Harley Treverton, Brodie Treverton, Joey Mortimer, Joshua Collins and Keil Bickle all stepped into the ring for the second time. Red belt Harley narrowly lost to a black belt. Brodie fought well but lost on points, Joey beat an opponent from Coolum in the semi and had to fight hard in the final, making a comeback in the last round to take the gold. Josh fought in two divisions with convincing wins in both to pick up two gold medals. Keil fought the current national champion and showed much improvement from last time picking up several points and making the fight go the distance. Cameron Taylor won two fights, both with scores of 20-0 to pick up a gold and Kasia Bartnikowska fought up two divisions against an experienced opponent with a huge reach and weight advantage showing much skill but only losing by a few points. Luke said he was super impressed with the warrior spirit shown by the team. The spirit of support was definitely a highlight of the comp. The team now is training hard for what will be the biggest comp of the year, the Gold Coast Open, where 500 fighters will come from every state in Australia and from New Zealand.

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
The Jogger and the Farmer Paul, a jogger, is running down a country road and is startled when a horse yells at him, “Hey-come over here buddy.” Paul is stunned but still runs over to the fence where the horse is standing and asks, “Were you talking to me?” The horse replies, “Sure was, man I've got a problem. I won the Kentucky Derby a few years ago and this farmer bought me and now all I do is pull a plough and I'm sick of it. Why don't you run up to the house and offer him $5,000 to buy me.
I'll make you some money because I can still run.” Paul thought to himself, “Wow, a talking horse.” Dollar signs started appearing in his head. So he runs to the house and the old rancher is sitting on the porch. Paul tells the farmer, “Hey man I'll give you $5,000 for that old broken down nag you've got in the field.” The farmer replies, “Son, you can't believe anything that horse says. He's never even been to Kentucky.” Submitted by Brian, Glass House Mountains

TAURUS April 21 - May 21 The first two weeks of May run like a welloiled machine! Even your birthday month should find happiness and a favourite restaurant with your favourite cuisine. This is the month to feel that a turning point towards better things, and improved conditions, is just around the corner. Begin a new research agenda. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 You should feel more like your old lively self this month as the planets are primed for you in a fast moving pace that you are naturally in tune with. If there is anything about money, there is perhaps a private supporter who could supply you enough to get that which you need. You are looking for action! CANCER June 22 - July 22 Being in tune with your emotions you may have felt a slowdown last month. However, the planets are arriving now to chase your ambitions. The weekend sees a New Moon with an increase of social activity as well as a diversion. Be open to friends’ ideas with a chance to expand your own horizons. LEO July 23 - August 22 Because there is a nice aspect between the planet Pluto and the Taurus New Moon in the first week of this month it is in the right angle to shine the spotlight of success upon you! This may mark a promotion, a new project, new people or a fresh way of triggering new events in your life now.
