Hi Everyone... With only two more editions until Christmas, I can’t deny that I am starting to get a little bit excited! However, while my subconscious may have started thinking about the three luxurious weeks of holidays, my brain is still very much focused on life in Glasshouse Country and Maleny. So focused in fact that this week I have even introduced a new feature into the paper, which we are calling the ‘Readers’ spot’. When I am out and about at events and get chatting to people they often tell me stories about their travels - and I don’t just mean their lovely, relaxing and fun holiday destinations (sorry, think my subconscious started to take over for a minute) but about places they have gone to for all sorts of reasons - work, a hobby, a passion/obsession, or just because they could. So this week we have included a ‘Readers’ spot’ on Maleny local David Fryer who recently travelled to the US to speak at a conference. Fortunately for us David was happy to share his experience and also a little bit about his life in Maleny. If you have an interesting travel story that you would like to share with our readers, or know someone you think would be happy to feature in our ‘Readers’ spot’, please email me at editorial@gcnews.com.au.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Local News Jack and his magic beans in Maleny The Maleny Players’ Christmas production ‘Jack and the magic beans’ by Vera Morris will soon be staged at the Maleny Playhouse. This well-known English folktale directed by Barry Harber, has been adapted and dramatised from the Benjamin Tabart version ‘The history of Jack Spriggins and the magic bean’. Young Jack Spriggins is faced with the possibility that he may have to sell Daisy; the family’s muchloved cow, in order to raise enough money to save the family from being evicted from their farm. Will a chance meeting with a bean seller in the market place save the family farm? Will the giant’s ghastly troll thwart Jack’s plans to reach the giant’s castle to save Lady Violet and slay the giant? Come along to the Playhouse to see this year’s Christmas play to find out. The talented Junior Players will be joining the Maleny Players on stage once again to perform and to help bring some festive cheer to families and all who are young at heart. The opening night will be on Thursday, December 13, at 7pm at the Playhouse in Maleny Showgrounds. Tickets for adults are $25 and includes a glass of wine and nibbles, children $10 (under five years free). Shows will continue across the weekend, on Saturday, December 15, at 2pm and 7pm and Sunday. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Thank you so much for your support throughout the year!

Share your Maleny memories By Lea Parkes Everyone who lives in or has visited Maleny knows it’s a special place, with a magic all its own. However, the time has come to find out why. An audit of Maleny’s cultural heritage is under way to ultimately learn what makes the town’s community heart tick? The audit is the first stage of a cultural heritage planning project being undertaken for Maleny Commerce by Steve Chaddock of Timeline, with assistance from Anne Brown and support from the Maleny Historical Society through its great collections and stories at the Pioneer Village. An open day event will be held at the Maleny Community Centre in February 2019 where the current understanding about Maleny’s heritage will be showcased and the public are invited to come along and contribute new and additional information. Ultimately the goal of the project is to create a range of products that will share the area’s history with locals, interstate visitors and international tourists in the form of signage, leaflets, walking and driving trails.

Closed from Monday 24th December Re-open Wednesday January 2, 2019

The original initiative of Maleny Commerce was all about developing an approach to create a greater awareness of elements of the town’s history particularly in relation to the business premises in Maple Street and the industry that has been a strong part of the town’s business heart. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said a subcommittee was formed about 18 months ago and, as is the case when great minds come together, it soon became clear that the project could be so much bigger and more beneficial to the town than first thought. The scope of the Maleny area has now been defined as the township and the surrounding satellite settlements of Witta and Reeseville. If you have information you would like to contribute you can drop it off at Forest Heart Nursery, 20 Coral Street, Maleny Tuesday–Friday from 9am–4pm or on Saturday between 9am–12noon.

New appeal stalls NBN towers A new appeal against an approved NBN wireless broadband tower will likely further stall the network rollout across the Blackall Range. The Sinclairs Lane tower application at Balmoral Ridge was approved by the Sunshine Coast Council in May. An appeal was lodged with the Planning and Environment Court by Mr Gordon Engle seeking to have the approval overturned. Mr Engle, a Balmoral Ridge resident, made a submission against the original application, objecting to the tower’s proximity to houses and saying it was in conflict with a range of provisions in council’s planning scheme. Council has confirmed that it intends to fight the appeal as the respondent, with NBN backing as a co-respondent. A subsequent co-respondent, Mr Bernard Spilsbury of Balmoral Ridge, has also filed his intention to be heard in the appeal. As Mr Spilsbury submitted his objection against the original tower application, it is expected he will be supporting Mr Engle. Mr Engle, through legal representation from P&E Law, contends in his seven-page notice of appeal that “…. the development ought to be refused because it does not comply with the relevant assessment benchmarks …” and that there are “… no other relevant matters which justify approving the application”. A hearing date is yet to be set. This appeal comes on top of a similar court application against the approved tower at Link Road, Glass House Mountains lodged by Glass House residents Giovanni and Giuseppina Chessa. NBN has also appealed against the council’s refusal of its application for a tower at Burgess Avenue, Maleny. Council and a resident, Mr Scott Thompson, are fighting the appeal. Both cases remain ongoing.

Council queries Landsborough dog breeding proposal The development proposal for a large dog breeding and kennel facility in Landsborough, submitted to Sunshine Coast Council on November 1, has generated an extraordinary community response since GC&M News broke the story (November 14 edition). Last week, the council issued the developer – Diamond Valley Kennels with a notice outlining a range of concerns and asking for further information around 14 issues of significance. Council indicated that from the original application details provided, they are unsure whether the development is justified. Specifically, council asked the developer to provide a “…rationale and justification for the demand and need for animal keeping of this scale and how the wellbeing of any animals will not be compromised by having such a large operation”. This query mirrors concerns expressed by animal welfare supporters who have been heavily advocating against the application via social media. Council also queried how the developer intended to comply with relevant state legislation and council laws relating to the keeping of animals. Other problems flagged included issues with storm water management, driveway access, the extent of earthworks, bushfire planning, waste water and sewerage management and noise assessment. Council has given the developer three months to respond, after which council will proceed with assessing the application. This means the response deadline is the end of February, 2019. The official public submission period for or against the application has not yet started. More details can be found by visiting https://www.developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and searching for ‘MCU18/0311’.

Harp strings in fairy setting

P: 5494 6167

Contributed by Sally Joyce After seven months of private harp lessons, nineyear-old Alex Haslam of Peachester recently had her first public performance. Alex performed alongside her teacher Graham Langdon and Rowena Thomas at a wine and cheese fundraising evening in the beautiful gardens of Beerwah & District Kindergarten. Graham’s music teaching and playing of the harp is enthusiastically inspired by a quote from William Butler Yeats: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”. Graham said Alex had a weekly 45-minute lesson with the emphasis of the lessons on getting Alex to love the sound of the harp through simple finger coordination exercises and a variety of simple folk tunes. “At the Beerwah Kindy performance, she played two of her favourites, ‘The giraffe’ and ‘The little harper’,” he said. “Alex has really taken to the instrument and has developed a regular practise routine. “Her confidence and self-assurance in general have also improved a lot over the past few months. “She is an absolute delight to teach and her parents Donna and Greg have also been a wonderful support,” Graham said. To get started Alex is hiring a lovely little 26-string ‘Dusty Strings’ harp from Graham. It has a beautiful tone and projection for a small harp and is ideal for beginners and intermediate players.

Graham has a few harps that he hires to young players to see how they (and their parents) enjoy the music before making the substantial outlay on buying a harp. Graham said that music changed his whole life direction and opened up a wonderful world of experiences and friendships, which would otherwise have not been possible. “I can only aim to pass that on to others in my teaching and performances with Rowena,” he said. It seems that Alex has had her harp strings set on fire and her performance was a perfect complement to the Beerwah Kindy’s new mural in the Fairy Garden. Congratulations Alex, may this be the first of many performances. Graham and Rowena are based in Maleny and can be contacted for bookings or teaching enquiries on 0418 159 365 or grhmlngdn@gmail.com.

Wonderful work recognised in nomination Glenview State School teacher Chelsea Harry (pictured) was recently nominated for a Queensland College of Teachers excellence in teaching award for the wonderful work she does at the school and in the local community. Chelsea believes no child is too young to pick up a musical instrument and engage their inner artist. A musician in her own right with a stint at the Queensland Orchestra under her belt, Chelsea encourages her students to use music as a form of expression and as a tool to improve memory and learning across all disciplines. Music as a learning tool is the driving force behind her ongoing research for a Master’s degree, findings from which she has shared across a variety of platforms from live radio interviews with the ABC to numerous written articles. While Chelsea has been teaching at Glenview there has been a huge surge in students joining choirs, with more than a third of students now actively singing. All up, half of the school’s students are involved in either singing or playing instruments, which is a huge feather in Chelsea's cap. Extending herself into other fields, Chelsea now teaches as an upper primary teacher. Her mantra is “never let your brain stay the same” and she specifically trains underachieving students in developing a growth mindset.

07 5494 0766 EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE

Glenview State School parent Miriam Grey said a more passionate educator would be hard to find, praising Chelsea’s ability to connect with children at all levels. “When you see her speak to the little ones around the school and then work alongside the older children, you become aware of her gift at truly meeting children,” Miriam said. “Since Chelsea began teaching at Glenview State School seven years ago, there has been a shift in gears to engage as many students as possible in musical disciplines, knowing it has a unique ability to engender confidence and growth, not only artistically, but academically. “She began to train and inspire both boys and girls to express themselves in ways they never dreamed of,” Miriam said. In the wider community, Chelsea has kicked off music workshops for children in nearby kindergartens to encourage a mindset that readies them for their future schooling. Chelsea says it is her personal commitment to keep learning and hopes to inspire others to do the same. Congratulations Chelsea and thanks for the joy you bring the students and the community.

GC&M News asked David to tell us a little more about the conference and about his life in Maleny.

How would you describe the conference experience? It was a privilege to meet and debate with key international researchers with whom I had previously corresponded but never before met in person. It was exciting to meet scholars and researchers whose theoretical, methodological and substantive work was new to me but I could clearly see the relevance to the issues I am trying to address in southern Queensland. It was a great pleasure to interact socially with, and get to know, other delegates as people as well as academics. The conference was held in the City University of New York on 5th Avenue by the Empire State Building. When I emerged from the conference at the end of the first day it was snowing hard and I could see the top of the Empire State Building disappearing into the snow storm. That was magical. What was your personal highlight of the trip? I have been an avid jazz listener since my university days, so when I was in New York City I fulfilled an ambition to go to Birdland, a very famous jazz club associated with sax player Charlie Parker (aka 'Bird'). While I was there Joe Lovano, a modern sax legend of whose work I have several CDs, was playing. How long have you lived in Maleny? My wife and I have lived in Maleny for just over three years but we have been visiting Maleny frequently for about seven years. We discovered the beauty of the hinterland within weeks of relocating to Brisbane (where I moved to take up

the position of professor of psychology and head of research at the Institute of Psychology, which was based in Fortitude Valley). We were soon spending every weekend we could in and around Maleny. We are keen film goers and as soon as we discovered Maleny Film Society, we started visiting even more often to attend screenings! As soon as my employment related commitments in Brisbane ceased we moved home to Maleny. What do you like about being a volunteer/a part of the Film Society? I volunteer in the film selection sub-committee of Maleny Film Society, a group of film enthusiasts who try to keep up to date with films being released that are being well reviewed, which provides a long list of movies on which members vote resulting in a short list of films to be actually screened. I like meeting with other enthusiasts, discussing films, engaging in a thoroughly democratic community process and attempting to ensure a really great selection of international films are screened for members to enjoy. There is always a buzz on film nights and when the audience is clearly enjoying a film screened on my recommendation, it gives me great pleasure.

Keep away from bats

The Public Health Unit of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is warning locals and visitors not to handle bats, even if they seem sick, injured or dead. Public health physician Dr Andrew Langley said bats could be affected by the hot weather and people may want to help them. The best way to help is to call a wildlife carer. “Bats can infect people with Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV). ABLV is like the rabies virus and infection can be fatal,” Dr Langley said. “ABLV can be spread from bats to people through a bat bite, scratch or by getting bat saliva in the eyes, nose or mouth. “Not all bats carry the virus. However, you cannot tell whether a bat is infected by how it looks,” he said. “Parents should make sure that children know not to touch bats. “This year, 17 residents of the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie council areas have been bitten or scratched by a bat, and received treatment to prevent ABLV infection developing,” Dr Langley said. If you or your child comes across a bat: • Do not touch the bat, even if it seems to be dead. • If the bat seems to need assistance (eg, it seems sick, injured or stuck), contact a wildlife rescue organisation which has vaccinated, trained bat carers. If you or someone you know has been bitten or scratched by a bat, or had bat saliva in the eye, nose or mouth: 1. Wash the affected area gently and thoroughly with soap and water for at least five minutes. 2. Apply an antiseptic (alcohol or iodine based). 3) Promptly contact: • Your GP • 13HEALTH information line (13 432 584) • Sunshine Coast Public Health Unit (Phone 1300 017 190) For more information, see Queensland Health’s ABLV fact sheet http://conditions.health.qld.gov.au/HealthCondition/condition/14/217/10/ australian-bat-lyssavirus.

Business News Maleny Harvest closes doors

At 5.45pm last Thursday, on the eve of closing Maleny Harvest for the final time, business owner Graham Hall was being kept busy with last minute customers who had dropped in to pick up some fruit and vege and to share their regret that Graham and the shop would no longer serve the town. One lovely lady, who had popped in to pick up her annual tray of mangoes, became teary talking to Graham about the tradition that shopping in Maleny Harvest had become for her family. In summing up the decade he has spent in the business, Graham said it had been fun, it was always interesting and no two days had ever been the same. While it is pretty clear that Graham will miss the friendships he has formed and the daily conversations he has had with many wonderful Maleny locals, he is definitely looking forward to cutting back on the gruelling number of hours required to run the seven day a week business. Graham was also pleased that by Thursday last week it looked like all three of his staff had been offered local employment, which he had been concerned about. Graham isn’t taking early retirement. He plans to continue living locally and to work within the wholesale fruit and vegetable industry, so locals will no doubt bump into him around town. Graham at Maleny Harvest

Get your pool holiday season ready now! School holidays are almost here and Christmas is just a few weeks away so if you are thinking of getting your pool or spa cleaned in time for a holiday workout – make sure you book in soon. Andrina (Andy) Tribbeck, from award winning family-run businesses Poolwerx Nambour and Poolwerx Burpengary, says this is their busiest time of year, especially in the lead up to Christmas, and their mobile service technicians book out fast. “Summer is your downtime – not your pool’s, so with enough notice we can help anyone and everyone get their pool sparkling clean in time for the holidays. While we do book out fast leading up to Christmas, we will have our two pool shops open seven days a week right up until Christmas Eve for our clients wanting advice or products to DIY,” Andy says. Welcoming two new mobile technicians to their family business, Andy says she is thrilled that technicians Rob (returning to the business, with

over eight years’ experience) and local technician Brett, who joins the Nambour team, will join the mobile servicing team (pictured). Their mobile pool servicing covers the entire hinterland region, offering everything from one-off services to pool pump repairs and replacements, regular servicing, tricky repair jobs and more. Passionate about offering high quality pool servicing, their highly experienced pool technicians have an incredible wealth of knowledge when it comes to pool and spa maintenance, products and equipment … and they are always happy to offer advice and tips to ensure your pool or spa stays sparkly clean. Andy says that as well as offering a huge range of products and advice that is right, they also offer quick fix buckets - easy to use buckets of prepackaged essential chemicals to address common concerns. The range includes ‘Storm fix’, which can be applied to stop a green pool in its tracks; ‘Summer start up’, which can kick start your pool

to be summer ready; and ‘Party prep’, which offers an impressive sparkling pool quick. These pre-prepared buckets offer a cost-effective, easy to use, all-in-one solution to get you summer and festive season ready.

Community Groups Probus in wonderland

Contributed by Norma McCormack The Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains had a ‘back to childhood’ experience in Old Petrie Town. The star attraction was the ‘Bee-lieve’, a magical pop up Christmas wonderland exhibition where everything is handmade to stimulate imagination and presented by two remarkable ladies, Julie Barten and Chris Boston. To keep our wits sharpened there were lists of ‘discoveries’ for us to make in each exhibit. With the zeal of a seven or eight-year-old we enjoyed partial success. In the age of strident street protests, this is an oasis of childlike innocence and calm. Although some exhibits of the Old Petrie Town were not open mid-week, our group enjoyed many and had lunch on the cool verandah of the pub. Like General McArthur said, “we will return”, so why not join our club and come with us on our return, or to one of our many activities.

Peachester District Horticultural Society

The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at Beerwah Community Hall at 10am. If you’d like to know more, contact Norma on 5439 0446.

Friday night twilight markets - Beerwah - needs you After five years of organising the Beerwah Tower Green markets, the Beerwah CWA branch has joined forces with Celebrate Glasshouse Country to encourage local individuals and community groups to create a successful monthly Friday twilight market in 2019. The branch is keen to find other locals who would like to be a part of the market and has organised a meeting for all interested parties to

be held on Thursday, December 6 at 9am at the Beerwah CWA Hall. Whether you are interested in being a stallholder, a member of a community group or an enthusiastic community member they would be keen to hear from you. For enquiries please email qcwabeerwah@gmail.com. Morning tea will be provided and there is no need to RSVP. The CWA ladies would love to see you there.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford Our final meeting for the year took place in the garden of Trish and Gary Bradford. We decided for our Christmas breakup this year that instead of exchanging gifts each member would donate $10 to the QCWA drought appeal. Rob Morris recommended to the group that it is better to buy good quality coir peat blocks as some cheaper ones contain too much salt. John Innes answered a query on when to divide and repot overgrown orchids. He suggests breaking them up and pieces with green tips on the roots are ready to plant. Results of the competition bench for October were Pam Innes first on 19 points, Trish Bradford second on 14 points and John Innes third on five points. After the meeting, members wandered around the garden and collected cuttings and then enjoyed a barbeque lunch with Gary doing the cooking. Wishing everyone a merry Christmas. Visitors are welcome to join us on Thursday, January 17 at 9.30am in the garden of Suealla Lanceley. Please bring along a mug and a chair. For more information and the address, phone 5496 9169. Viki Blaik with a large pot of petchoa Petchoa is a cross between petunia and calibrachoa. They are more disease resistant and weather tolerant than petunias.

In the spirit of Christmas, we are offering ALL children aged between 2-17 a bulk billed check-up, clean, x-rays and fluoride RX for the month of December (or no out of pocket expenses with any health fund)

Incredible growth ahead for alternative health and wellness The new owner of the Healthy Guru, Glass House Mountains local Denese Brookes (pictured), is excited to unveil her plans to expand the popular alternative health store and practice based in Beerwah. Her main focus at the moment is to extend the range of instore therapist services and to expand the retail product and food range of the business. Denese says she is currently interviewing massage therapists to join the team in 2019, and is also looking to employ an additional naturopath. Looking forward to coming on board full-time herself in the New Year, Denese says she sees incredible growth ahead in the alternative health and wellness industry. “I’m looking forward to continuing to offer locals the convenience of having access to quality alternative products and services right here in Beerwah, without having to travel elsewhere. I’m also really excited to be looking into expanding the current range to include other health and wellness related products, and to offer additional retail diversity and healthy food options,” Denese said. A new range of gorgeous Australian makeup and skincare products from Byron Bay’s Eco Minerals is set to hit the store over the coming days, and Denese also has a new range of jojoba oils and products on order. She has plans to widen the sports supplements and protein shake range, and is in discussion about offering a retail outlet for Doterra essential oils. Also new are convenient pre-made lunch options, with a range of tasty paleo and vegan focused menu items. Denese plans to offer readymade salads and other healthy food options for customers and clients to ‘grab and go’.

Nutty vegan chocolate

Long-term team member Sara will continue in her full-time role assisting customers, and current practitioners Melanie Larsen (Bowen therapy) and Emily Bendensen (kinesiology) will continue to offer their therapeutic services. Previous owner Leanda will also stay on until early in the New Year to assist and ease client transition, and Denese says she is looking forward to focusing on the retail and business side. “I’m really looking forward to kicking off 2019 with a bang. I’ve got lots of ideas and I’m incredibly grateful to be involved in this new and exciting business adventure. My true passion has always been for health and nutrition and I’m excited to be focusing my business experience and energy into a local opportunity that resonates personally.” For more information drop into the store at Shop 3, Beerwah Marketplace or visit www.thehealthyguru.com.au or call 5439 0097.

New butcher opens in Beerwah Meat lovers rejoice as a brand new independent butcher is set to open this week. Conveniently located in Beerwah Marketplace, Meat U @ Home is a family owned business run by husband and wife team Gary and Julie, who are both passionate about providing great quality, ethically sourced and produced meat served up with good old-fashioned customer service. Highly experienced in the industry, Gary has been a butcher for more than 40 years, and prides himself on offering customers an old style butcher experience. Specialising in making their own delicious smallgoods, sausages and tasty home cooked meat meal options, they only use Australian welfare-friendly free-range produce – so no imported products or ingredients. Along with the new store in Beerwah, the couple also own a butcher shop in The Gap in Brisbane and service weekend farmers’ markets with their mobile shop. Gary and Julie have a long-term appreciation for Beerwah, as one of Gary’s closest relatives has lived locally for years so the couple are very familiar with the area. As well ‘meating’ Gary and Julie, who will work between both the Brisbane and Beerwah shops, customers will also recognise some familiar local faces behind the counter at the new shop. Julie explained that Meat U @ Home offers locals an opportunity to eat great tasting, ethically sourced meat including free-range beef, pork and lamb and easy meal options such as home

cooked pies, quiches and lasagnes. They have a wide range of meat cuts to prepare hearty home cooked family dinners – and they are always happy to offer tips and advice on preparing nutritious family meals. If you have a favourite item you’d like ordered in, just let the team know. “We offer free local home delivery and will feature weekly specials as well as an assorted range of bulk pack options. Drop by and say hello – we are all ‘people people’ and we look forward to getting to know our local customers,” Julie said. With Christmas just weeks away, Meat U @ Home will have all your favourite festive food items such as turkey, ham, and pork. Orders are being taken now, so get in early and arrange your Christmas pickup. The shop will be open right up until Christmas Eve with trading hours Monday-Friday 7am–6pm and Saturday 7am–4pm. In the busy lead up to Christmas, the shop will also open on Sundays from 7am–2pm.

Owners Gary & Julie look forward to meating all the locals

Struggle with makeup lasting? Summer is here and so is ‘sweating while you stand’! Hi, I’m Beck from the Cosmetic Tattoo Company and I want to tell you that sweating your makeup off over summer is no longer an issue. I see so many women who really struggle to keep their eyebrow and eyeliner colour on during summer, especially if they are going through menopause. They are constantly worried about accidentally wiping off an eyebrow during their coffee date with the girls, or their eyeliner smudging all over the place because it’s so hot.

For the months of December and January I would love to not only help you solve your makeup problems but to also offer you a free facial valued at $75 when you book in for any eyebrow or eyeliner tattooing service. If this is something that you have been thinking about or are interested in knowing more, contact us today. We offer a free consultation and I would love to have a chat about what colours and shapes would best suit you. Sharon and I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone we have met over the past year and to everyone who has come in and supported our local business. You Said It About nuclear accidents

Following up from MP Mark McArdle’s column on nuclear energy in GC&M News (November 7), and the letters from Mr Dyer (November 21) and Mr Day (November 14). To clarify a more realistic perspective on the likelihood of Australia taking up nuclear we need more independent facts on the Chernobyl, Three Mile Island (US), Windscale (UK) and Fukushima accidents. The nuclear industry paints a no-worries picture of safety, due to the fact that radiation induced illnesses and cancers can take decades to manifest. Example Chernobyl - many sources say very few died as a result. What facts do we have? The Chernobyl Forum: 2003-2005, attended by representatives of the WHO, International Atomic Energy Agency and other bodies, resulted in the publication of ‘Chernobyl’s legacy: Health, environmental and socio-economic impacts’ [2005]. This report is quoted as proof that Chernobyl had little impact on public health. It concluded only 28 clean-up workers died from acute radiation syndrome in 1986 and more than 4,000 children developed thyroid cancer, 15 of whom died by 2002. It also estimated an additional 4,000 fatal cancers could arise in the overall population. This sanitised version of Chernobyl was reached by an interesting method - consulting only 350 sources, mostly in English, and ignoring 30,000 publications and 170,000 sources of information available in languages other than English [‘Chernobyl, 25 Years Later’, 2011]. A summary of the other very large body of literature, ‘Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment’, concluded that radiation-induced casualties will likely approach 980,000 people [Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2009]. Dr Helen Caldicott, a founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility, at a 2015 symposium on ‘The medical implications of Fukushima’ said: “The accident is enormous in its medical implications. It will induce an epidemic of cancer as people inhale the radioactive elements, eat radioactive vegetables, rice and meat, and drink radioactive milk and teas. Radiation from ocean contamination bio-accumulates up the food chain. Consumed, it will continue the cycle of contamination, proving that no matter where you are, all major nuclear accidents become local.” Do we want this risk in Australia? Richard Giles, Conondale

television to an ever expanding surveillance system, the search continues for the holy grail of the leastworst way to generate it. I take most arguments with a grain of salt, but remain concerned about uranium produced power, because it is problematic from the moment you start digging it up. After the main extraction up to 80% of the radiation contained in the original ore body is left behind in the tailings heaps, seeping out into the environment and atmosphere over thousands of years. When I was a part of the Jabiluka uranium mine protest in 1998, it was reinforced over and over that the primary purpose of setting up uranium mines was to have a ready supply of the stuff to make bombs. Has anything changed? Eventually we'll need to learn to live in peace, in a much less violent world or the future is grim. As far as global warming goes, NASA scientists are now advising we are moving into a long term solar hibernation, the effects of which are already being observed on the inner planets. It might be hot in Queensland but America is experiencing the coldest winter in 100 years. Climate crisis or not, I can't see nuclear power as any kind of solution. Jon Woodlands Cambroon

Rescuers at risk

With the impending summer and the expectation of fires, floods and storms, I am worried about the television media and their employees. Anyone who watches the television, and in particular the news, will understand what I am writing about. Our Premier, Commissioner of Police and head of SES personnel get on the television during these disasters and inform us in no uncertain terms of the danger. They advise which areas have been evacuated, telling residents to either move out or lock themselves inside their respective homes and not to venture out, as they are placing their lives and the lives of their rescuers in danger. It is pretty straight forward and a kindergarten child could understand. However, not our media. We will see them hanging on for dear life as winds blow them off their feet, water hitting them with force and corrugated iron roofing amongst other debris flying past, which could cut them in two in a second. Who is policing these idiots? The various stations have bosses who make decisions and send these people out into danger, they are in fact ‘aiding and abetting’ the offence and stupidity itself. This in turn places both the employed and volunteer rescuers lives in danger, having to worry about or look after these idiots who want to win an award reporting on a top story, bugger the lives of their rescuers. Unfair subsidies

I would like to bring to reader’s attention a situation that occurred on November 17 when I called Suncoast Cabs between 6-6.30pm to arrange transport to my local church in Beerwah. I was firstly informed there would be a $30 surcharge to return me home. I am a current holder of a Taxi Subsidy Scheme (TSS) card as I am wheelchair bound and blind. Suncoast Cabs has recently taken over the weekend contracts for Beerwah and surrounding areas. On Monday, November 19, I contacted Suncoast Cabs and, as the general manager was away, I spoke to Josh who is the operational manager. He informed me that TSS would cover the surcharges. However, there are people within our community who cannot afford these surcharges or who are not eligible for a TSS card and rely on a taxi. There are numerous taxis on the Sunshine Coast, so it would be beneficial to have one placed here to service this area, which would cut out this surcharge. It is disgraceful that this is happening. Debt consolidation Having multiple loans can creep up on you. Combining several debts into one single loan, otherwise known as debt consolidation, can make good financial sense as well as significantly lowering the stress load of managing such a hectic financial schedule. However, it needs to be managed correctly. Some of the benefits of consolidating your debts into one loan can include: less paper work (you only receive one set of statements), the convenience of dealing with just one lender, one monthly repayment (making budgeting easier to keep track of), 24

saving on loan fees and charges by paying them on just one loan, potentially a lower interest rate, particularly if you use your home loan to consolidate debt, which can create significant financial savings overall. This all sounds like a no brainer so far. However, there can be pitfalls too, including: lender fees (you may need to pay application fees or exit fees if you are taking out a new loan or getting out of an existing home loan early), government charges (some duties and taxes may apply if you are using your home loan to

consolidate your debt), if you are extending the length of a loan, for example moving a personal loan of five years onto a 30-year home loan, the overall interest charge will be much greater unless you continue to make the same cumulative repayment amounts as prior to the consolidation. Debt consolidation is worth considering if you have multiple debts, particularly if you are going through financial hardship. Once you do consolidate and get your finances under control, be sure not to fall back into bad financial patterns.

Staying in control of your finances is the key to avoiding financial stress. Whatever your financial goal is, write it down, and talk to people who can support you to realise it, like your Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison.

Back to school It’s the festive season again and with this time of year comes the stationery lists for next year. Beerwah Newsagency will once again be ready for your child’s back to school requirements. While they are already the supplier for Beerwah and Peachester state schools, they can assist with most schools’ needs. Simply drop in your lists and they will advise on prices. Beerwah Newsagency offers a unique service as your book list items do not have to be paid for until collection. At this busy and expensive time of year they have found this is a great help for many families. All they ask is you get your lists to them as early as possible to allow ample time for the packs to be finalised and to minimise the last minute rush that often occurs in the few days before school recommences. Remember, payment is not required until collection. Beerwah

Newsagency also has an extensive range of slip-on book covers to simplify that frustrating covering process. For a number of years now, Beerwah Newsagency has also assisted local schools by donating a percentage of total book pack sales to them. Over the past seven years this has equated to just over $19,000. This demonstrates the importance of developing a relationship with local businesses that proves beneficial to all. By supporting local business, you in turn reap the rewards of your loyalty. Les and Merrilyn have had 25 years’ experience in newsagencies and have been processing school book lists for all that time. Their son Grant has been in the business with them for 14 years, specialising in the stationery side of the business, and his wife Gabby has now been working in the business for six years.

Smashed bottles at rock pool Just wanted to advise that a group of hoons had a booze party at the rock pools in the reserve next to Caralan Park in Beerwah over the schoolies weekend. They expressed their adult responsibility and civic pride by smashing upwards of 30 bottles on the rocks and left it for others to clean up. Bottle labels found We have picked up as much of the glass as we can, but the area is covered with splinters and we have no idea how much glass has landed in the rock pools themselves. Parents of kids who swim in those pools would be well advised to dissuade their kids from swimming there. Also, people who take their dogs for a walk over the rocks would be advised to avoid the area due to the glass splinters everywhere. We have advised the council and suggested that they at least put up a sign. Anybody with a battery-operated vacuum cleaner is welcome to spend time there sucking up splinters. I am not sure how one goes about finding and removing glass from the pools safely. I am open to suggestions. Gordon Reddek Coordinator of the Cochin Creek Bushland Group

Please stop

I urge everyone to stop buying caged eggs. It is the cruelest industry. Just dig a little deeper and buy eggs that are from happy chickens. We have to stop this disgusting treatment of chickens. YoYo Peachester

After attending a public meeting in Landsborough Hall several months ago, hosted by Andrew Wallace MP (representatives from NBN and Telstra were also there), we were informed that when NBN came to our area we would be able to obtain the necessary equipment to enable us to still use our emergency alert pendants and battery back up to phone. Now NBN is available to us in Mooloolah we have, without success, rung Andrew Wallace’s office, NBN and Uniden (whose phone and pendant we have). Where do we go from here? My friend and I are both in our 80s and both widows. If an emergency occurred, we would not be able to call for assistance. I am sure my friend and I, who both live in Mooloolah at different addresses, are not the only ones in this situation. Does anyone have any idea how we can resolve this matter as it is of great concern to us both? Jenny Doring Mooloolah Valley

Hanson Quarry

Last weekend we took the kids to the open day at Hanson Quarry at Glass House Mountains and it was fantastic! I would like to say a big thank you to them for a great few hours of family fun, from the yummy donuts, sausage sizzle, hamburgers and lots of free goodies for the kids, lucky door prizes, iced coffees and other delicious drinks as well as a tour around the grounds, with an insight into what they actually do. My son was in his element with the big trucks, endless free food, fairy floss, popcorn and Coke. Just wanted to give them a shout out in appreciation given all the flak they cop when half of the community probably don’t even know what they do or supply to our local area. MCU vote

by Sarah Davies, Chair, MCU, Board of Directors Maleny Credit Union members must vote yes to ensure a $2 million donation to the Maleny Credit Union Charitable Trust. It has been great to see the excitement in the community about the $2 million donation we plan to make to the trust as a part of the proposed transaction negotiated with Firstmac Holdings Limited. Following our recent announcement, I have been contacted by quite a few people asking how they can get funding from the trust for some very worthy causes. We share your excitement but I need to remind everyone that we can’t make any decisions with regards to the charity until the $2 million is received following our members voting in favour of Firstmac’s proposed acquisition of MCU in the upcoming voting process. As a part of the first vote, all members should have received an information memorandum by email or by post along with instructions on how to vote in the upcoming postal ballot.

If the proposed transaction is approved in the postal ballot, members will be asked to vote a second time at the scheme meeting on the scheme and demutualisation. It is very exciting to think about all the projects that could be funded over the years with the income from a $2 million nest egg, plus a large ongoing donation from MCU for at least a decade. As well as the large donation to the trust, each member will receive $1247, member investment shareholders will receive $1 for each of their member investment shares, and Firstmac will guarantee that the Maleny branch will continue to operate for the next 10 years ensuring that staff will retain their jobs. MCU recommends that you vote yes for Firstmac to acquire MCU because it guarantees a future for the MCU Charitable Trust and a future for sustainable banking in Maleny. Please make sure that you read the documents you receive about the transaction, including the benefits and risks relevant to you, and then have your say.

Trifecta sweepstake Contributed by Ian Hope For many years, the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains has sold tickets in a Melbourne Cup trifecta sweepstake with a prize of $1,000. In 2018 not all the tickets were sold and the winning ticket was an unsold ticket. Consequently, this year there was no winner to receive the prize. The club has decided to donate the prize to the Beerwah High School chaplaincy. The cheque for $1,000 will be presented to Mike Turner, the Beerwah High chaplain, at the club meeting on December 11.

From the churches Is it now or then? We live in a fast paced world where we are always looking to the next thing. I think this speaks to an attitude called consumerism. This attitude, while it keeps us looking forward, never takes the time to appreciate where we are at right now. We are so busy on a pursuit of a newer song than the one just released, the latest updates for our phones, and trying to ride the wave of current technologies that keep us on the cutting edge. This high level pursuit of accessing a greater ease to life can actually leave people exhausted. We chew stuff up and spit it out and get ready for the next mouthful. I remember being told as a youngster to chew food 32 times before you swallow. Even though this advice seems archaic there is some wisdom to it too. We need to learn to appreciate the season of life we are in and not be so hell-bent on the next thing but rather

Talk to faces not screens. We are talking about being a gift through our Sunday message at present. A gift honours, blesses, enables, lifts, values and does so much more. Imagine living life with this mindset: “Today I am going to be a gift”. I hope this new thought takes the sting and hurriedness out of your life in this high energy season. Take time to sit with God, read the Bible and meditate on how to apply His word to your everyday life. Live a life of purpose, using the peace of God as your guide.

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Christmas at the Glasshouse Country Community Carols The Glasshouse Country Community Carols is back and bigger than ever! With up to 3000 people expected on Saturday, December 15, the new organisers are preparing the event with a big stage, great sound and an exciting, brand new program. Entertainment will be in full swing from 4.30pm, including performances by local dance groups, bands and soloists. There will be rides, food, an animal farm, a jumping castle and lots more. From 6.30pm, two choirs will join carolers singing some of the all-time Christmas classics before fireworks bring this special evening to a close. I encourage families to bring blankets or picnic chairs and spread themselves out ready for the singalong and gaze up at the sky. Parking is available, but why not travel by train to Beerwah station and walk the short distance to the event. For more details, visit Glasshouse Country Community Carols Facebook page. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely wish all residents of Division 1 an absolutely fantastic holiday, good health and my very best wishes for the New Year.

organisations. Community organisations are essential, especially in country towns, as they foster a culture of service and help people better connect with their community. Landsborough is a good example of this growth in community organisations, with the latest group called ‘Landsborough Love Where We Live’ adding to the existing mix of the Landsborough Area Community Association, Celebrate Glasshouse Country (with a new office under the hall), the Landsborough Hall Committee, the Museum, Chamber of Commerce, Rural Fire Brigade, CWA and neighbourhood centres to name just a few. The point is, if you want to connect, contribute and make a difference in your community, don’t wait any longer. Get involved and join one of these groups – they need you. To learn more about these groups, contact my office or search online.

State Member for Caloundra Queensland set to debate euthanasia and palliative care An inquiry into euthanasia and palliative care has started with the Queensland Parliament referring it to the Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention (HCDSDFV) Committee on November 14, with the final report due by November 30, 2019. Community discussion surrounding euthanasia and palliative care is an invaluable element of the inquiry. The questions surrounding euthanasia and palliative care are fraught with deeply emotional, ethical and religious beliefs often coupled with profoundly personal experiences. It is because of these experiences that I believe it is incredibly important that we hear from our community. Patients, carers, health care workers, the extended family and indeed all of us have an opinion. Many can tell from personal experience the difficulty these questions arouse. While acknowledging the courage and strength it takes to speak about endof-life options, we can come together and have a genuine and meaningful discussion about a stage of life we will all face one day. Within the inquiry the HCDSDFV Committee will also look at the delivery of aged care, but with regard to euthanasia the committee must: “… -report to the Legislative Assembly on: (b) Queensland community and relevant health practitioners’ views on the desirability of supporting voluntary assisted dying, including provisions for it being legislated in Queensland and any necessary safeguards to protect vulnerable persons.” The scope for the inquiry will be very wide and will include consideration of other jurisdictions in Australia and around the world where legislation for end-of-life and voluntary assisted dying is in place. I encourage all who have an opinion to read the terms of reference and to let me know your thoughts through a form that has been set up on my website (accessed via the link below) or visiting my Facebook page. Please note that this discussion form is not a formal submission that will be sent to the HCDSDFV Committee but an opportunity to let me know your thoughts on the matters of euthanasia, aged care and palliative care. You will be able to make a formal submission to the committee in the coming months. I will keep you updated as to when submissions open. For now, let’s start an honest and respectful discussion here on the Sunshine Coast about end of life, knowing that our thoughts and comments could impact on the ultimate report by the committee. A discussion form can be access via Mark McArdle MP’s website: www.markmcardlemp.com/euthanasiadiscussion. Terms of reference can be found through the Queensland Parliament’s Work of Committees website: https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-ofcommittees/committees/HCDSDFVPC/inquiries/ current-inquiries/AgedCareEOLPC. caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au Search us on Facebook Mark McArdle MP

Hinterland Kids Glenview students sparkle Glenview State School students once again blew the locals away with their professionalism, their musicality and confidence as they took to the stage for the recent sixth annual ‘Evening of the arts’. This year, mime artists cruised around the crowds adding drama to the night and visual art lined the walls. Both senior and junior choirs performed along with bands, guitar ensembles, string groups and vocal soloists. A stand out for the night was the junior dance troupe and their jungle-styled ‘I like to move it’ routine. Students and teachers at Glenview are passionate about the arts and it is lovely for them to see children, including some who at one stage could barely speak in front of a class, suddenly come alive and sing solo in front of 250 supporters. It was a spectacle, proving that the arts are alive and well at Glenview State School.

Reading with preps at Beerwah State School

Prep teachers at Beerwah State School have begun a new activity, which encourages families to read together. ‘Reading on the Green’ invites families to join students while they practise reading. With a focus on demonstrating reading strategies to parents and caregivers, the activity encourages families to use what they learn to support children with their home reading practice. It is an event that the students really look forward to every week. It also gives the students an opportunity to talk about the stories they have listened to and for parents to share their excitement about becoming readers.

Healthy lunchbox habits Children in the school readiness program at Glass House Early Education Centre are ready and excited to pack their own healthy school lunches next year and continue the healthy eating habits they have learnt during their time at the centre. Recently, the team at Glass House Early Education Centre was delighted to have a visit from the Healthy Cooking Company’s dietitian Megan Gracey. Megan came to present an interactive workshop on healthy lunchboxes to the children who will be graduating and moving onto prep next year. As the children are currently provided all their meals by the Healthy Cooking Company, Megan was excited to visit the centre to help the children and parents transition to having to bring their own food from home. The workshop proved interesting and informative to both children and parents alike. Megan taught the children about the five core food groups that make up a healthy lunchbox: vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy and meat/alternatives. As part of the session, each child received a lunchbox for prep next year, as well as a recipe book filled with yummy nutritious lunchbox-friendly meals and a checklist for parents. The children also had the chance to play a game and fill their lunchbox with pictures of nutritious lunchbox-friendly foods. The healthy lunchbox workshop is just one of the many ways Glass House Early Education Centre supports children’s health and wellbeing. All children attending the centre receive daily morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea from the Healthy Cooking Company. The Healthy Cooking Company was established by the founders of

Queensland Childcare Services to develop healthy eating habits in children who attend their centres. According to research, children’s dietary patterns and preferences are moulded during early childhood and can influence diet and health in later childhood and adulthood. Despite this, very few Australian children are meeting the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Most children are eating too few vegetables and too much ‘sometimes’ foods (ie, energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods). In order to build a solid foundation for health, young children need to be exposed to a wide variety of nutritious foods in positive social contexts. Megan and the team at the Healthy Cooking Company are passionate about preventive healthcare and educating children and their families about healthy choices. The Healthy Cooking Company caters not only for children, but also families and individuals. The dietitians and chefs at the Healthy Cooking Company have designed take-home family meals,

individual nutrition plans, children’s meals and baby food to meet the Australian Dietary Guidelines. The meals are free from artificial colours and flavours, have no added salt or refined sugar, and cater for a range of special dietary needs. Their most recent menu has been inspired by the evidenced-based Mediterranean diet. The Glass House Early Education Centre will continue to promote a wide range of healthy eating habits to all its children. The centre will have Megan visit again early next year to present her ‘magic beans’ session to teach the children all about legumes. For more information about the Healthy Cooking Company visit www.healthycookingco.com.au or phone 3806 0087. For any childcare enquiries please contact 5438 7311, email GlassHouse@qccs.com.au or call into the centre at 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

Mooloolah Valley Country Club recently hosted the launch of Sunshine Coast musician Isabel Wood’s debut EP ‘Satisfied’. The singer-songwriter (pictured) who successfully graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Popular Music, has honed in on her unique approach to modern pop and is building a local following. She continues to mesmerise audiences with her soothing vocals and captivating stage presence. Her inspirations include the likes of Gabrielle Aplin, Nina Nesbitt and Ed Sheeran. ‘Satisfied’ is a four-track EP that showcases emotional song writing and explores topics such as love, heartbreak and the world around us. After performing a few Sunday sessions at the club and developing a friendship with club owners Cheryl and Paul Poulus, Isabel was keen to host her launch in the great open space of the Mooloolah Valley Country Club. Isabel had plenty of support on the night, with a great turnout and the aptly named cocktail ‘the Satisfied’ created especially for the night, which also impressed the guests. Isabel’s ‘Satisfied’ EP arrived just one week after she released her debut single ‘This World’, along with a music video filmed entirely on the Sunshine Coast. Written about the beauty and fragility of our planet, Isabel describes ‘This World’ as “a love song to nature” and, more light-heartedly, “David Attenborough meets pop”. To find out more about Isabel you can check out her Facebook page. with Dr Michael Whiticker

Music Today

Opportunities for creative musicians in our region Some of you will have heard of the Eudlo Music Nights (EMN) – a small festival with overnight camping held at the beginning of April and October each year. Associated with the festival, we are launching some music programs that will run for the next 18 months. One that I am most excited about is a song writing workshop. It will be a weekly get-together at the Eudlo Hall over the two months leading up to each festival, starting in the first week of February and restarting in the first week of August. Each week I will analyse a well known song or facilitate a song writing exercise, and we will have the opportunity to share songs we are writing. Typical participants of this group will be experienced songwriters wanting to share their work and find inspiration in the work of others, as well as inexperienced songwriters wanting to build their skills or just extend themselves creatively. It will also be of interest to poets or lyricists wanting to collaborate with musicians creating songs or finding musical accompaniment for their poetry. One of the participants in the group will receive studio recording time at the Sound Space in Peachester. We will also have a songwriters’ concert at the EMN festival which will allow those participating in the workshop to perform one of their songs. Also associated with the festival will be the mentoring of an up-and-coming Sunshine Coast act, leading to a performance at the EMN and possibly some recording time at the Sound Space. What the program offers will depend on the experience of the artist. In some cases it will be technical and production support, and in others could be song writing, recording or career management support. We are calling for expressions of interest anytime within the next 18 months. Further information can be found at www.facebook.com/groups/EudloSongwritingWorkshop/ or www.eudlomusicnights.com.au. If you are considering becoming involved in these programs, you might like to know a little about my background. It includes 15 years as a full time composer with companies such as the Australian Opera and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, eight years as a university music lecturer and 12 years running music organisations and managing, producing and directing arts festivals, before moving to SE Queensland in 2011. See www.michaelwhiticker.com.au. Hope to see you at a Eudlo Music Night! Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. Stepping Out Podiatry has come a long way since establishing itself in the hinterland almost 18 years ago. Next month they will welcome another fulltime podiatrist, Scott Greenbank, to the team. Scott is currently living in Brisbane and will be relocating to Maleny early in the new year. Having moved to Queensland from Penrith in the early 1990s, he quickly adapted to life in the Sunshine State taking up water polo and rugby, while enjoying the beach life that Queensland has to offer. Scott said he came from a family of teachers, with both his brothers and father in the teaching profession, but he didn’t feel this was his calling. “In my first year of university studies my father made a cracking joke about becoming a podiatrist to take care of his feet. Now a humble joke has turned into a passion,” Scott said. “My passion for podiatry comes from the ability to make such a difference in people’s lives as foot and lower limb pain can be so unpredictably debilitating,” he said. Besides podiatry, Scott enjoys spending time with his wife Brook and their identical twin boys Archie and Lloyd, and their dog Bria (pictured). To book an appointment with Scott or any of the Stepping Out Podiatry team, phone 1300 881 082.

In the Garden Ask Brownie

Vege Notes

Radish

This is the quickest column I’ve had to write in a while … how to grow radishes. Here’s what you do – sow them … grow them … eat them. And that’s about all you have to know. Radishes aren’t to everyone’s taste. They can be hot and spicy and can make some people a little gassy, but they are a terrific fast growing summer salad vegetable that anyone can grow anywhere. If you want to get the kids into vegetable gardening, start them with a styrofoam box or large planter pot filled with potting mix and get them to scatter some radish seeds. Get the kids to scratch up the surface with their fingers so the seeds are just covered, then have them water it well. Cover the box with shade cloth and keep it out of the direct harsh sun. In a couple of days they will start germinating. Uncover and put them into a sunny spot and get the kids to water them every morning. After as little as two weeks they will be picking small radishes, which is a good way to thin them out to give space for the rest to grow larger. The younger radishes have less of the glucosinolates and the enzyme myrosinase, which combine when chewed to form allyl isothiocyanates, making them taste hot. They also have less raffinose, a trisaccharide sugar that can cause abdominal gas. Raffinose is also found in beans, cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli and asparagus … all having similar effects. The one key thing to remember when growing radishes is to keep them evenly watered. Letting them dry out too often will lead to woody radishes and ones that bolt to seed. Lots of gardeners sow radish seeds with carrot seeds. The idea here is that the radishes will grow quicker than the carrots, so when you pick the radishes it thins out the crop so that the carrots have more space to grow larger. I tend to grow them separately as I find carrot seeds take longer to germinate and grow to a size where they can support themselves without me having to take care when watering. I find that the radishes dominate the area at the expense of the carrot seedlings. Last thing you need to know is what type of radish to grow. As with most vegetable crops, you have a wide choice in shape, size and colour. I tend to go for the classic ‘French breakfast’ type … although why you’d want to eat radishes for breakfast is beyond me. After that I like a long white radish – ‘white Icicle’ is good and is great shredded to accompany gyozas or spring rolls. But there are so many to choose from – even one that has white skin and bright pink flesh called ‘watermelon’ radish. Lastly, watch out for caterpillars as they will readily attack radish leaves. Treat them with whatever caterpillar spray/potion you prefer. If you want to tame down the spiciness of radish, you can peel them (as the heat is mostly in the skin) or score the skin with a fork and soak them in icy water for a few hours. You can slice and pickle them in vinegar too. A radish can also be cooked in similar ways to a turnip. They generally don’t take as long to cook but I’ve found that this changes their flavour … sometimes not for the better.

Nematodes and marigolds In an article you wrote a few weeks ago, you mentioned nematodes. Did you know marigolds (I prefer the smaller African variety) attract nematodes to their roots? You throw the seed onto the garden so they germinate, then pull the plants and burn the marigold roots so you get rid of the nematodes. If you leave them in the ground, the nematodes will keep growing and multiplying. A lot of insects don’t like marigolds because of their smell, so they are a natural repellent. Bees don’t seem to mind their scent. Without bees a lot of plants won’t produce. So many people today go for plants with no flowers, then they wonder why they don’t get pumpkins, tomatoes, etc. Most veges, fruits and flowers need bees to pollinate and fertilise them so they can produce their crops or next season’s flowers. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and holiday while you rest and recuperate ready to start work again in 2019. Ruth English

Thanks Ruth for that snippet of information. Ruth runs the herb group which meets at 10am at the Caboolture PCYC in Toovey Street on the first Friday of the month. They are in recess now until February 1, 2019. If you would like to know more about the group, call Ruth on 5496 7649.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Keeping our wildlife safe Most of us at some time have used rat or mouse bait to control the pesky rodents that manage to invade our homes no matter how secure they are. We no longer feel comfortable using the oldfashioned spring traps that kill instantly. What many of us do not realise is that most baits or rodenticides cause a slow death by thinning the blood of the poisoned species and eventually causing internal bleeding. Depending on the quantity of poison taken, the victim may take days to die or alternatively may survive with liver damage. Rats and mice provide food for various species of owls, raptors and frogmouths. With spreading development and urban areas encroaching on bushland, it is not uncommon for these species to be found around our homes and city parklands. Young birds are especially vulnerable as they are more likely learning to catch prey and will target slower rodents that have been poisoned. A study of owls being carried out at Edith Cowan University has found that 70% of birds tested had toxic livers due to ingestion of rodenticides. Of course, all these birds were already dead due to road deaths or domestic animal attacks. No studies were carried out on live birds! Another thing to remember is that not all rat-like critters are introduced Rattus rattus - some may be native rats or marsupials. The best way to keep rodents under control is to encourage native predators, keep property tidy and lock away food sources such as seed and grain securely. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? Visit www.gman-inc.com.au. Winnie & Wallace - Domestic Short Hairs Price: $200 for the pair Age: 2 1/2 years and Desexed: Yes 8 months Sex: Female and male Temperament: Temperament: Winnie and her son

Wallace are looking for a home where they can be together. They came to us from a smaller rescue that required help with rehoming this lovely pair. Winnie is the mainly tabby coated girl and Wallace has the white with tabby coat. Winnie can be affectionate and is OK with being picked up but is not keen on being held for long. She likes to explore and do her own thing, coming back at the sound of dinner. Wallace is still very much a kitten and playful when the occasion arises. He likes to be stroked and loves a tummy rub from time to time. They both have shy natures and are looking Open: for a quieter home to bring up their confidence. Contributed by Graeme Glover We have had a number of visiting bowlers enjoying what Maleny has to offer, as well as local businesses planning a bowls outing for their Christmas parties. No more Christmas bookings can be catered for as we are in the lucky position of having a full celebratory calendar. Thanks for all who have chosen to have fun at a great local venue and support the local community facilities. Training sessions on our new defibrillator will be happening over the next couple of weeks. Thanks to Les and Linda Fawkes for your Maleny Paint sponsorship. This has been a valuable addition to our club facilities. Congratulations to Dave Burgess and Dan Peterson who won the Monday monthly pairs beating a strong field from our visiting hinterland clubs. It was great to see many new bowlers joining in these away games and improving their skill level in these types of competitions .This is a real positive growth of bowls at MBC. Great to welcome some new members to our Wednesday night bowls. Friday scroungers saw Dave Edwards and Ian Chatterton the big winners. Dave is playing some excellent bowls and as a relatively new player is showing what can be achieved with regular participation. Well done all members and visitors who played at home or away for the club during the past week. On Saturday evening we had a large turnout for Christmas drinks and nibbles to celebrate with all of those folks who have achieved some personal success and contributed to the club. Enough thanks cannot be given to those who do and give - you are the positive people of the community. We at the bowls club acknowledge you and thank you for the difference you make in the lives of so many who enjoy the facilities we have at MBC. Well done. What a great 2018.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, November 26: Ladies day, graded triples. Due to traffic problems from an accident on the highway on the day, a number of the players were unable to make the game so it has been postponed. Social: Grahame Meyers, Noelene Annakin and Ron Wilson defeated Noelle Dean, Marilyn Boulton and Rob Scullion 20-14. Lee Meyers and Dennis Hume defeated Viv James and Bruce Angus 25-15. The ladies Christmas breakup party will be on Wednesday, December 12. There will be fun bowls with lots of prizes and raffles. If you just want to go along for lunch that is also fine. Remember to bring a $10 gift. The spring series of Business Bowls is over and congratulations to ‘The Trophies’ team - Mick Borchers, Jill Kirchheiner and John Annakin who were undefeated for the season. See you back here for the summer competition in February 2019. Thanks to Bill Tumbridge and Liz Little for their hard work. Thursday, November 27: Social, open pairs: Being the fifth Thursday of the month I decided to do something different - two games of 12 ends with 2-4-2 format pairs. Prizes were out of the hat. Winners of the day were Darcy Wilson and Barry Kirk with the lowest winning score of 12 in the first game. Runner up with two wins +31 margin were Jack Timm and Doug Sweedman. Lucky draw went to Allan and Ruth Warry. Sunday, December 2: It was a fantastic morning of bowls with 32 players out on the green. It was good to see a few new faces and some of our juniors. Thanks to Carlton for sponsoring the day. First prize went to Steve Joliffe and Mick Borchers with two wins +87. Runners up were Troy German and Barry Kirk. Raffle prizes went to Paula and Noelene Annakin. Thanks for all the help Col Allen, Dennis Hume, Lyn Griffiths and Jake Druery. Hopefully we can do it again next year. Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Six adventurous croquet players turned out on Thursday, November 22. Storms were hovering, but none interrupted play. All three formats of croquet received an airing in a diverse and entertaining afternoon with the storms providing a dramatic backdrop. In association croquet, Donna Manning and Kath Smith defeated Vince Carbery 13-5. Playing golf croquet, Gillian Bradley and Bev Sockhill had a close game against Sally Adams winning 7–6. In the ricochet game, Sally and Bev teamed up to play Gillian in what was another another close game, losing 4–5. There were eight players at Saturday's coaching session. It was very enjoyable. On Sunday, November 25, Frances Harper and Donna beat Kath and Vince 18-6. The attached photograph, from the division three club championships, shows Sarah Widin just having struck the yellow ball to make hoop two. Sarah has made hoop one and given herself an opportunity to create a good break by leaving the blue ball behind hoop two so that she can croquet it after making the hoop. She has also left a ball at hoop three (unseen) with the plan of promoting the blue ball as a pioneer to hoop four while going to the ball at hoop three. The psychological aspects of this shot are interesting because the blue ball, that of her opponent, is for hoop two as well. This can be seen by the blue clip atop the hoop. If Sarah were to ‘bomb’ the hoop (ie, not get the ball through) then her opponent is usually given an easy opportunity to ‘steal’ the break with the blue ball. Some players avoid taking the shot at the hoop when their opponent’s ball is behind for that reason, but the correct thing to do is go for it. ‘Faint heart never won a fair lady’ and generally doesn’t create breaks either. Sarah made the hoop and created a game winning break from there. Lessons for beginners are held on Saturdays at 8am on the courts in the showgrounds. During summer, play days on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the showground are 2.10pm for 2.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. Just for Laughs God was missing for six days. Eventually Michael, the archangel, found him resting on the seventh day. He inquired: "Where have you been?" God smiled deeply and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds. "Look, Michael. Look what I've made." Michael looked puzzled and said: "What is it?" "It's a planet," God replied, “and I've put life on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a place to test 'balance’." "Balance?" inquired Michael. "I'm still confused." God pointed to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold and covered in ice." The archangel pointed to a heart shaped island

ARIES March 21 - April 20 Steamy exchanges heat up in the first week of December with Venus in Scorpio. There is a New Moon this week in Sagittarius, a happy sign for the Arians, as it shines on your beliefs, travel, writing and publishing. It sets a tone of optimism and good cheer, especially when Mercury enters Sagittarius on the 12th. Boldly express hopes. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week you too see sultry Scorpio inspiring steamy romantic exchanges! With Mercury retrograde it involves someone from the past. But when Mercury moves direct, in the middle of this month, a break up is likely to occur. Towards mid-December a better relationship for you is grounded in stability and security. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Your ruling planet Mercury is still in retrograde so stay focused only on essentials, not on large expensive new items. This week, however, boosts holiday enthusiasm. There may even be a good business deal around the 7th to the 9th. Your concern for other people makes you popular. The New Moon marks an exciting new chapter. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Because Venus is travelling through the sign of Scorpio, it brings the Cancerians warm love and support from family and children. An old issue might come up for resolution as Mercury, being retrograde, revisits a past creative project. The New Moon over the weekend arouses holiday faith and hope. A good office party now.

and said: "What's that one?" "That's Tasmania, the most glorious place on Earth. There are beautiful trees and gardens, a beautiful river and days filled with sunshine. The people from Tasmania are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent, and humorous, and they are going to travel the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking, high achieving, carriers of peace and producers of good things." Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then asked: "But what about balance, God? You said there would be 'balance’." God smiled. "I will create Canberra. Wait till you see the idiots I'll put there!" Hugh Jones Beerwah

LEO July 23 – August 22 With Mercury still in retrograde until the weekend you will be most fortunate that it fits nicely into the happy, upbeat Sagittarius transit. On the 7th the Sagittarius New Moon comes to you with a dreamy Mars/ Neptune conjunction. You will shine at holiday social events amid adoring friends, relatives and children. Be generous! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Your ruling planet Mercury has already started the month retrograde, in the sign of Scorpio, finishing up a three-week period of confusion. Fortunately, it goes direct and a happy New Moon over the weekend rings the holiday season’s bells. You should have an inspiring, motivating companion. Decorate Christmas trees now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There may be still some confusion that impacts your emails or holiday shopping. This is because Mercury still finishes its retrograde period and Venus also, in the sultry sign of Scorpio, makes for strange finances. Better to wait until after the weekend, as Mercury will help you reconstruct effectively. Excellent gift buying mid-month. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The New Moon on the weekend flies into your fiscal zone, planting the seeds for holiday fun and gift shopping. As Mercury now goes direct in your sign it matches up with Venus to solve mysteries and sets things right in your personal life and ambitions. After Sunday you are up and running before noon with shopping chores.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With Mercury turning direct again, the weekend sees you with travel clarity and mental communication skills. Get some plans into place so as to make things happen. Avoid wallowing in discontent, even if you are alone. Your shopping emphasis is now on good value and being smart and economical. Personal life concerns must be put right! CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 A close friendship steams up under Venus in Scorpio and Mercury, moving direct again, bringing invitations. A secret gift may be involved. Secrecy may also be involved in another holiday affair. The New Moon introduces local travel with your companion and an inspiring connection with an artist. Balance, rest and work during holidays. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Even though friends may be pushy there are some fast results that have desired outcomes. Family and colleagues may leave you mystified by their behavior. Don’t invest time or money until having a better handle on things. The New Moon spotlights your social life and a potential new travel plan is made. Enjoy personal affairs. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The planet Venus, now in transit through seductive Scorpio, is in your Piscean adventure zone. Mercury is also in Scorpio and finishing its retrograde period and goes direct this weekend. Mysteries and misunderstandings begin to clear and your road ahead stirs up a fantasy trip. The New Moon sets a tone of good cheer.
