Hi Everyone

O

ne thing I really love about the format of our paper (magazine style) is that we can use as a ‘cover shot’ a photo which sums up one of our stories featured that week. We really like to mix up our front covers as it gives us so many opportunities to feature photos of the great variety of stories and range of people from our community. When we received this photo of Glasshouse Country Christian College Preppie Xanthe we couldn’t go past making her our covergirl, looking very grown up in her school uniform and industriously taking on her colouring in. Xanthe is one of hundreds of new Preppies in Glasshouse Country who started their schooling career last week and

no doubt it made for a very emotional week for many local households. We have also featured a number of photos of school children and their parents at the Christian College’s, 'Tim Tams and Tissues' morning tea in our ‘Out and About’ section this week. It got me thinking back to when I started school, I remember that my dad took me on my first day, and not being someone who talked about feelings (much like most of his generation) I think my whole pep talk consisted of ‘you’ll be right, see you this afternoon.' Last year GCNews brought you the story of Britney Dale from Glass House Mountains who was travelling to Los Angeles to perform in the Junior Category at the World Championships of Performing Arts.

Britney’s mum Tracey said thanks to the generosity and support of the Glasshouse Country locals, friends and family, Britney was able to make this amazing trip, and enjoy the experience of meeting contestants of all ages from over 40 countries. “Britney made some wonderful friends and witnessed some of them in the Senior categories receive scholarships to specialised schools in America, the start of their dreams coming true,” said Tracey. “It was very inspiring to see and a bit emotional to be part of such a special moment for them.” “Performing on stage in front of managers and agents from the performing arts industry was very exciting and nerve racking, but something Britney will never forget - an experience of a lifetime. “Britney is still singing and is working towards increasing her skills in the performing arts arena,” said Tracey. The Dale’s would like to thank all those who supported Britney by donating or buying tickets outside Supa IGA Beerwah, and for all the wonderful words of support. In particular, they would like to acknowledge the assistance of Glasshouse Country News for promoting Britney, Elizabeth de Varga Exclusive

After saving two seriously injured pelicans, rescuers and twin sisters Paula and Bridgette Powers, who run Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue in Landsborough, will receive a Hero to Animals Award from animal rights group PETA Australia. "Without the help of Paula and Bridgette, it is very unlikely that the pelicans would have survived," says PETA Australia Director of Campaigns Jason Baker. "We encourage everyone to stop, help and speak up for animals who are subjected to pain or suffering, because if you don't, maybe no one else will." Pelicans Peta and Bibbie sustained similar injuries from fishing hooks. Peta had a hook imbedded deep in the joint of her leg. Her leg was so badly damaged that she required surgery every three days. Bibbie, who is a juvenile pelican, spent two months in care before being released. Both pelicans were released back into their home at Pumicestone Passage two weeks ago.

"They look like they are in pain but they're not," she said. Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue provides a 24/7 rescue and rehabilitation service for seabirds, waterbirds, native birds and other native wildlife. Staff at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre were left a little bemused this week when they arrived at work and noticed that someone had dumped an old television in the bushland across from their entrance gate. All e-waste including televisions are free to drop off and the facility is open seven days a week from 8.00am – 5.00pm. Would it have taken much effort for the person who dumped it to just do the right thing?

Calling all female cricket fans The Australian women’s cricket team may have just fallen short of emulating our Ashes winning men’s team recently, but their skill and dedication was just as intense against the English. Although there are some Queenslanders in the squad, there was little chance of any Sunshine Coast players being chosen, says Daryl Cheeseman from the Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club – but only because there is no local team or competition for them to be a part of. But this is something that Daryl hopes to change for next season. “Currently, local women who want to play outdoor cricket (as opposed to indoor cricket) have to either travel to Brisbane to train and play or otherwise play in the local men’s competitions,” explained Daryl. Daryl, who coached women’s cricket in Western Australia, is looking to establish a Sunshine Coast women’s cricket team as an initiate if the Landsborough Loggers club. “There are some talented women who are playing in the men’s grades and there are definitely lots of women who are playing indoor cricket. And there would be plenty of undiscovered talent in the ranks of other sports like softball. “With no team based on the Sunshine Coast, I think there is a big opportunity for a local team to become part of the Brisbane league in the 2014 / 15 season, from which the Queensland team and then the national squad is selected,” Daryl said.

By Greg Brown

With the women’s competition being played using the limited over one-day cricket format, it can be a quicker and more exciting competition than the men’s two day matches. He already has one star player signed up. Emily McBride of Nambour currently plays for a Palmwoods men’s competition team where she’s an accomplished batter and wicket keeper. “I had to play for a Brisbanebased women’s team last year, which made it difficult and expensive travelling up and down for training and games,” she said. “Establishing a Sunshine Coast Daryl Cheeseman, Steve Hocking (Landsborough Loggers women’s team would be a big President) and Emily McBride step in the right direction for local sport.” a come-and-try Twenty20 game on February 28 Emily encourages anyone who has an interest in at their Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough home cricket or general field sports to think about trying ground. out for the Sunshine Coast team. “It’s an opportunity for interested women from “The skills used when playing cricket are across the Sunshine Coast to come and have a so varied that it really is such an enjoyable hit and see what it’s all about,” said Daryl. sport – and the social aspect of cricket is very “We’ve set up a Facebook page (Sunshine Coast rewarding,” said Emily. New FiFo and DiDo Group in Mooloolah A new group is starting in Mooloolah for Fly in Fly out (FiFo) or Drive in Drive out (DiDo) workers to meet one another. This initiative has come from recognising the large population of FiFo / DiDo workers in the area who may have needs that can be supported through a group of people with similar work arrangements. Natasha Odgers from the Hinterland Community Development Association said the energy for establishing this group has come from people at the Mooloolah Community Centre. “Sunshine Coast TAFE, who run a community classroom program at the Mooloolah Community Centre, and Centre volunteers have united to start a group for FiFo / DiDo workers. Mooloolah and surrounding areas seems to be a real hotspot for people who live locally yet work away.

“This group could be valuable for workers in a number of ways, ranging from a social outlet to a support network and point for service provider referrals,” Natasha said. This group will be for whatever the workers want it to be for, for example, friendships, support, referrals and time out. Guest speakers and skilled support will be available for providing structured assistance. All kinds of workers are encouraged to come along. The group will meet on Tuesday, February 11, 10.00am – 12.00noon at the Mooloolah Community Centre, 43 Bray Road. This group is anticipated to meet at this day and time weekly. Enquiries can be made to the Mooloolah Community Centre on 5494 7822 or email admin@mooloolahcommunitycentre.org.

Hazard reduction burns to begin HQPlantations will soon be commencing hazard reduction burning in their plantation managed area within the Beerburrum forestry area of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The burns are part of an ongoing campaign to protect their plantation asset from potential wildfires, arson and accidental lights, along with adjacent communities. Beerburrum Operations Manager, Pierre Maré, said recent rain, cooler temperatures and lighter winds will allow HQPlantations to begin hazard reduction burning in a planned program to reduce the risk of wildfires in the area. “Annual summer growth of underbrush requires that we undertake hazard reduction burning to reduce the risk of wildfires in the hotter months

when fires would burn more intensely,” Mr Maré said. He said some burns would commence in February, continuing through to the end of July, with April and May being the peak of the burn period. The timing and frequency of burns is dependent on weather conditions, and while every attempt would be made to minimise smoke inconvenience to residents and motorists, it would remain dependant on these favourable weather conditions. To this end, HQPlantations informs the public and neighbours when managed hazard reduction burning is planned, however if members of the public are concerned about fires in, or threatening plantation forests, they should contact 000 to arrange the appropriate response.

University planning students focus on Beerwah For thirteen weeks from the beginning of March, a group of final year regional and urban planning students from the University of the Sunshine Coast are going to focus on Beerwah as a Community Planning Project. This project will look at all aspects of the Beerwah community, and surrounds, to develop comprehensive strategies to help cement Beerwah as an important town centre on the Sunshine Coast. The project is interested in offering realistic planning solutions for issues that are facing the community from the perspectives of: economic development and innovation; community and social development; transport and access; landscape, built form and heritage; ecology and nature; and infrastructure and land use.

The project is looking to engage all interested community groups and community members to have their say and provide input into highlighting the past, present and future key issues and opportunities for Beerwah. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce will host an information evening on Thursday, February 13, from 5.30pm at the Beerwah RSL where Nick Stevens, from the University, will explain the project and hold a forum to begin to get your thoughts on the issues that matter. To RSVP phone Sarah at GCNews on 5438 7445 or email reception@gcnews.com.au For more information please contact Bob McLean on 0427 606 240 or president@ glasshousemountains.com.au or Nick Stevens 0478 689 317 or nstevens@usc.edu.au

Business News Glass House Personal Trainer giving back

After the 2011 floods, Personal Trainer and Sunshine Coast Young Business Woman of the Year Finalist, Bianca Aiono-Robertson, was stuck in between a rock and a hard place. Fighting a tide of rising employee expenses and juggling clients who were struggling with flood affected businesses, Bianca was given a welcome distraction when she was shortlisted by a NBC casting agent to be a Personal Trainer on the Biggest Loser USA. Presenting on camera came naturally to Bianca and led to her closing the doors to her bricks and mortar business and launching an online wellness coaching business ‘BionicaFit’. “As my business had grown, my life had become all about financial and staff management and far less of the really soul inspiring life changing transformations that I had built my reputation on,” she said. Three years on, Bianca has helped successful business women in every capital city of Australia, and even in the USA, Paris, Singapore and New Zealand, shed their excess layers and Bianca Aiono-Robertson reveal their most fit and fabulous selves. Now she is bringing her attention back to her grass roots with a monthly weight loss motivational event series to provide tips, tricks and support for local women all for just a charitable donation to another cause close to Bianca’s heart the ‘Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge’. Bianca says more than 60% of Australians are overweight and of those 80% admit to being confused and misled by marketing messages. “I still get asked all the time for help from women who live locally, and I love helping people cut through the confusion and become body proud. At the end of the day, I just really want to give back to this beautiful place we call home,” she said. The first ‘Unleash Your Roar Energy’ fun fitness session is held on Saturday, February 15 from 7.30am to 9.00am at Point Cartwright. Places are limited, go to www.bionicafit.com/unleash for your free ticket.

Cupping and Tui-Na massage is also available. Naturopath Synta will be starting on Fridays and Saturdays with her speciality being weight loss. Get cool in the pool at Mooloolah!

Business feature

Mooloolah Pool is proving to be a very cool place to hang out! As temperatures soared in the Summer holidays, residents headed to the pool to cool off and have some family fun. At the very start of the holidays, the Dive-in Movie event was a great hit, with a really good crowd attending. Holiday Intensive Learn-toSwim classes were well supported with lots of children enrolled in daily lessons and showing just how much improvement can be achieved in a week of swimming! Swim Squad for all ages continues to be well supported in the mornings and after long hot school days.

Rubber ring fun

www.gcnews.com.au

Georgina and the swim squad Early in the holidays, Swim Club kicked off with a big splash, and about 50 children swam and had loads of fun in and around the pool. Swim Club has kicked off again, for the 2014 term one and is held each Friday evening at 5.30pm. Swim Club is for school age kids to compete in a relaxed and friendly setting to develop confidence and enthusiasm. Young swimmers hone their

skills and times as they race against peers and the clock; parents conduct the events under the guidance and support of pool management. The sausage sizzle and free swim seem to be popular features of Swim Club too, not to mention the chance to see Andrew Cowan, our manager and resident Australian swim champ ripping up the pool! Come and join the fun.

The Sunshine Coast Choral Society

The society is seeking new singers and former members. The Choral Society is a self-funded community choir with a professional music director and a professional accompanist. This mixed voice choir (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) sings works from the traditional and modern choral repertoire as authentically as possible; works may be unaccompanied, with piano or with an orchestra. The program for this year includes a ‘from scratch’ performance of

Haydn’s ‘Creation’ on May 3; A Choral Tapestry – the official twentieth anniversary concert reflecting the extent of the choir’s repertoire on August 3; and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio on December 7. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday nights 6.45pm – 9.30pm at the Lakeshore Christian Church, North Buderim. Volunteer callout for Neighbourhood Centre Volunteers not only have a fun time at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, they gain much more than what meets the eye. The Centre is looking for new volunteers to join the friendly team and make a positive difference in the local community. Neighbourhood Centre volunteer, Jenny Robertson, said she loves many aspects of being at the Centre. “I love volunteering at the Centre because of the opportunities it’s given me to meet new people, socialise, learn new skills, exercise skills that I don’t get to practice at home and mix more often with adults. I also love making and seeing things happen in the community,” she said. “The biggest thing I have personally got out of volunteering at the Centre is that it has made me feel more worthwhile, I can see what I have to offer,” Jenny said. Jenny’s story of how she first started at the Centre shows just how easy it can be once you take the first step. “I was very hesitant to approach the Centre because I didn’t know anyone, but once I walked in the door I found everyone was very friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging,” she said. Thanks to Jenny, the Neighbourhood Centre is now easier to find, as she was responsible for requesting a road sign for the Centre. Jenny also had the backing board replaced on the Glass House Mountains community noticeboard, so

it is now looking neat and well-kept for people to show their notices. Jenny was also instrumental to the team and a super organiser for Glass House Mountains Country Car Boot Market last year as part of the Glasshouse Country Festival. There are a variety of volunteer roles available at the Neighbourhood Centre for anyone who may be interested in giving it a go. The Centre is particularly seeking people Jenny Robertson with secretarial skills who and new road can use a computer and is signage happy making phone calls. Other areas for volunteers include fundraising, raffles, promotions and events. People are also encouraged to start new community groups and initiatives at the Centre. The Neighbourhood Centre is 100% staffed by volunteers and is open Monday and Friday, 9.00am – 2.00pm, and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9.00am – 12.00noon. Why not pop into the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre and see if this is a place you might like to volunteer? The Centre is located in Ryan Street, across from the Post Office and the phone number is 5438 7000. Everyone is welcome.

Changing times

My family and I moved to Beerwah approximately 13 years ago. We loved the peaceful atmosphere, friendly people and hassle free shopping we had in our little town. We felt like we had lived in Beerwah for a long time due to the town's welcoming ways. But times are a changing! Through our employment in Beerwah during December we experienced first-hand the aggression of many customers and the willingness of these people to share their extensive vocabulary at us. We’ve all seen the reconstruction of our main street. And I look forward to seeing it completed. The companies performing this work have gone to extensive measures to ensure we still have the use of the foot path, putting ramps down and ensuring entrances to the stores are clear. It is disappointing to witness mums pushing prams, people in cars and others using the footpath abusing those workers who are working on the road or paths for inconveniencing them. When did it become OK to abuse others? We need to remember that these people are mums and dads just doing what they are employed to do in their jobs and they don’t come to work expecting to be abused. I’d like to thank the workers for their consideration in making it safe for residents and visitors to still access those shops. What must they think of our community spirit? In the paper over the past few months there have been many readers airing their views on one thing or another. Don’t get me wrong, we have freedom of speech and the best local newspaper in GCNews but are we getting tied up in what’s wrong and have we forgotten to allow ourselves to see and experience the true beauty of Beerwah? What makes a town successful in attracting visitors and new residents? Is it the vibe? Is it the attractions? Is it the experiences our town offers to those visiting? Is it the people? Please don’t let this beautiful town get the name of ‘Grumpy Beerwah’ Not grumpy Beerwah

It’s a scam

Not sure why, but lately I have been receiving repeated calls from an Indian call centre claiming to be from Windows Technical Support and that there is a problem with my Windows program on my computer or laptop. Last week there were seven individual calls, with some of the callers becoming quite nasty. I am aware of this scam, but I am concerned that some people in the community (especially older community members) who don’t know and could easily get caught out by them. Please do not give them any details or pay them any money for updating your Window’s license. Concerned Beerwah

Premier Newman take your head out of the sand

To compare the issues of alcohol-fuelled violence confronting our communities today with the so-called ‘six o'clock swill’ of the 1960's (when Premier Newman, born 1963, was a mere babe!) is patently absurd, in the extreme. I'm old enough to have experienced drinking laws, habits, and impacts since the late 1950's - and the late night / early morning drinking orgies now resulting in massive injuries, family mayhem and murder even, is manifesting much worse than anything ever experienced in my lifetime. Please, Mr Premier, don't give oxygen to the interests of the drunken louts causing all this mayhem - or the grossly irresponsible pubs, clubs and liquor manufacturers and retailers who feed off them. In the interests of my grandchildren, your children, and the offspring of all sections of the community who share these concerns for them (now, and in the future) please. Stop bottled liquor trading (all venues) at 10.00pm, close all pub bars at midnight, close all clubs at 1.00am - 1.30am. Legislate to lock our Courts (Magistrates and Judges) into much heavier - and unavoidable - penalties for these offenders, and give our police more manpower (and facilities) to crack down heavily on these late night / early morning drunken thugs. Oh......and I enjoy a drink occasionally, by the way! And I have no time for ‘wowsers’. Col Walker, Beerburrum

Shopping local success

I would just like to give the small business community of Glasshouse Country a very big thankyou. This Christmas I made a conscious decision to try and buy my gifts as close to home as possible. I am very pleased to say 80% of the gifts I gave were sourced locally between Glasshouse and Landsborough. Without trying very hard, I found an abundance of things to buy and many I would have liked to have kept for myself. This was without venturing to Beerburrum or Mooloolah and the most important thing is that I really enjoyed the whole process. We always see the treasures outside our area, please look for these treasures closer to home, there is a wealth of things to buy and the store owners are a delight as well. Re: comment from Dan and Tara from Total Microsystems

In last week’s story about ‘Keeping our community safe’, I'd like to talk about the comment "we've never wanted to put security bars as we don’t want the area to look like Ipswich." Being a former Ipswich resident for about 23 years, I take offense at this comment as you are judging and labelling Ipswich as a bad place to live. Have you been to Ipswich lately? I was recently there and when I drove down the main street I believe there was not a single shop with bars on the shop fronts. The crime rate may be higher in Ipswich but is because Ipswich is a larger city and Beerwah is a small Hinterland town so of course you will hear about it more. There is crime everywhere so you just mentioning Ipswich is ridiculous. Steve Landsborough formerly of Ipswich

Editor’s note

As Steve has raised concerns with a comment made in a recent GCNews story we thought we’d ask Dan from Total Microsystems - if he wanted to clarify his comments and this is his response.

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your response to the article in the paper. I understand your concerns and apologise for any offence we may have inadvertently caused with our comments. Our comments were, in part, driven by feedback we have received from the community and our customers. With the amount of break-ins many local businesses have experienced lately, in conjunction with the proposal regarding CCTV cameras in public spaces in our town – I can understand why the local community are drawing comparisons with Ipswich. In my experience, I do not know of many small towns which have had to resort to having CCTV in town in order to keep a lid on the crime. A quick Google search will show you that Ipswich is considered to be the ‘crime-fighting capital of southeast Queensland’. The local Mayor Paul Pisasale credits the drop in crime to the implementation of CCTV and other security measures. At the end of the day, all we want to do is keep a lid on the crime and make our local community a safer place. In my opinion, we can learn some valuable lessons from what has been done in Ipswich. …. And Yes, I have been to Ipswich lately. Most of my family reside in Ipswich and always have. I was also born and bred in Ipswich so I feel I am more than entitled to an opinion on drawing comparisons between both Ipswich and Beerwah. Daniel Moodie Total Microsystems, Beerwah

Reply to Peter Dennis and Ewen Maddock Dam users

I may have been out of the area when you had your last meeting. As a group of 25 cyclist and walkers I wish to suggest another meeting with the various groups of people using the various walkways at Ewen Maddock Dam. There have been no set guide lines set by any party. I believe democracy is still part of our country, that’s what our forefathers fought for, and dictatorship is out. Kindly contact me or put a notice in the Glasshouse Country News under notice boards: Ewen Maddock Dam meeting. Richard Plantinga Beerwah

The Healthy Guru

Business feature

Since opening last October, The Healthy Guru is getting bigger and bigger as it grows in range and events. This year has started off with many enquiries interested in yoga classes and the Guru membership in-store loyalty program. This interest has sparked an increase in product range and workshops. “We are pleased to be able to now offer to our customers an extensive range of supplements from the Herbs of Gold company. Exclusive to health outlets and using only the company’s own ingredients to assure purity of product, we particularly love the range suitable for children of all ages,” says Leanda ‘Fish I care’ contains essential ingredients that are highly important for a child’s healthy brain functions while ‘Immune care’ with echinacea, vitamins and trace minerals will be a valuable tool for parents assisting their children through the winter months. The children's range is complemented by multi care benefits derived from the 21 vitamins and

minerals and all supplements are a pleasant vanilla-berry flavour. Leanda has discussed the supplement ‘Women's Hot Flush’ with resident naturopath Judy Timm, and both agree the unique blend of herbs will assist women in balancing their hormones and adrenal glands while providing benefits to relieve night sweats and irritability The full range is too large to list, so Leanda invites customers to drop by in store to discuss in more detail and also receive 20% off any Herbs of Gold product that they may wish to try during the month of February. Bigger events planned by Leanda and Craig for 2014 include workshops at the Beerwah Community Hall. These include ‘Kids Yoga’, Sunday, February 16 (ages five +), ‘In to me I see’ – a workshop focusing on meditation and relaxation on Sunday, March 16 and ‘Raw Food’ (with Liza Gilbert Grant who has over 30 years gourmet raw food experience in her teaching schools

School News Tim Tams and tissues

The first day of Prep is a big one for many families. There are tears, tissues and tantrums – and that is just the mums! At Glasshouse Country Christian College, the Prep staff knows that this is a tough day for the mums and dads, so a couple of years ago began a ‘Tim Tams and Tissues’ event. The morning tea is held straight after the little Preppies are dropped off in class. This not only provides a valuable time to meet other parents but also gives the opportunity for parents to come to terms with their little one growing up and being big enough for school. Those tissues really are needed! The children settle straight in with songs, games and lots of playtime to become familiar with their new surroundings. Students are introduced to the interactive white boards and can’t wait to start using them. After morning tea, the students were taken on a group tour of the College, learning where the library is, discovering the huge playground and

Historic year ahead

As the first school bell rang for 2014, Landsborough State School welcomed its students back from summer holidays for what is set to be another fantastic year. A total of 45 Prep students, along with many new students from various other year levels, and six new teachers have joined the school community. The Prep classrooms were buzzing with excitement as lots of little feet took the big step into school life.

Prep student Roy Cole with his mum, Honi

Summer splash

Once again, Mooloolah State School is proud and appreciative of its wonderfully supportive community, in this case, Ruth Zerner of Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy. For the second year running, Ruth has generously sponsored two students from Mooloolah State School to attend the Scripture Union camp, Summer Splash, at Mudjimba in December. Year 5 and 6 students contested the sponsorship, creatively writing what they expected to gain from the camp to serve them in leadership in 2014 and beyond. Kit Pearson and Lucy Gillespie were the successful applicants, both writing poems to express their hopes and expectations. The prize was announced at the end of year Christmas Extravaganza and the girls attended the camp during the school holidays. Fun-filled activities provided opportunities to try new challenges, work in teams, establish new friends, and develop new skills in leadership. Activities included camp survival skills, archery, ice-skating, obstacle courses, sing-alongs, messy games (with jelly, flour, spaghetti and detergent!), roasting marshmallows on the campfire, and even a visit to Aussie World! Both girls are extremely thankful to Ruth Zerner for the wonderful opportunity her sponsorship 14 |

seeing where some of the other Primary classes are. The children’s faces really lit up when they saw the kitchen garden and learned how they are going to grow and cook their own food. GCCC Teacher Lesley-Ann Rosenberg offers Tim Tams to mum Karina Gianneli who already has the tissues in hand after leaving her daughter in Prep. More photos on page 20

There were plenty of smiles, along with a few tears (mainly from parents), as the Preppies embarked on their education journey. Any first day jitters were soon forgotten as students settled into their classrooms and new friends were made. This year, Landsborough State School will celebrate 135 years since it was first established. The year 2014 will also go into the history books for another reason - it is the last year of Year 7 being at Primary School. As of next year, Year 7 will become the first year of high school as the Queensland Government Flying Start reforms are introduced. “We are looking forward to what will be an exciting and busy year ahead as we celebrate our school's 135th birthday as well as preparing both our Year 6 and Year 7 students for a smooth transition in to high school,” said Principal Kristy Walton.

Motorcycle Champ is a Sports Grants Recipient

I was pleased to announce that Hunter Lawrence from Beerwah High will receive a $500.00 Sporting Champions Grant from the Australian Sports Commission to help him compete at a national motorcycling event, the KTM Australian Junior Championships. Hunter was one of 14 people from Fisher who received grants. Anything we can do to help these stars of the future achieve their goals can only be a good thing.

Glasshouse Country Care Association Inc will receive $574,000, to continue its wonderful work helping people remain living independently at home. Older people in Glasshouse will get extra support and care services—such as cleaning, meals, nursing care and transport thanks to this federal government investment. Congratulations to Allan Mountain for his continued leadership of this wonderful organisation.

New Glasshouse Aussies welcomed at Citizenship Ceremony

I’d like to announce that two Glasshouse Tourism businesses will receive grants of up to $110,000 to upgrade the quality of their operations. Australia Zoo, and Glass on Glasshouse Cafe will receive $110,000 and $79,535 respectively. The scheme is designed to improve the quality of the visitor experience in Australia. They are known as the T QUAL Grants. Missing footpath – Kilcoy-Beerwah Rd

I was recently contacted about a missing footpath along Kilcoy-Beerwah Road, between Nichols Avenue and BlackButt Street, Beerwah. I understand Nichols Avenue is a very frequented footpath, however once pedestrians get to the end at the KilcoyBeerwah Road intersection it just stops and is very difficult to cross the road. I am aware of the safety concerns and contacted the local authorities to enquire about this on behalf of residents. Construction of footpaths falls under Sunshine Coast Council, and council has advised they are investigating the issue, including the scope of works and estimate of costs required to extend the footpath. As soon as I hear back from council I will let you know the outcome. In the meantime feel free to let me know your thoughts on this.

Public forum – Caloundra Aerodrome flight training

On Friday, February 7 I will be holding a public forum surrounding flight training at the Caloundra Aerodrome. Many residents, particularly those living in the Bellvista estate, have complained about an increase in helicopter training over the estate and the noise. It is important for everyone to co-exist, but also to have their say. If you would like to have your say please come along.

ANZAC Centenary Funding

The State Government will offer grants up to $80,000 to assist communities to commemorate the historic Anzac Centenary, which will be commemorated across Australia from 2014 2018. This $13.5 million funding commitment is designed to support local communities to highlight stories of local diggers, uncover hidden knowledge, educate the community and commemorate our service men and women. The first round of applications is now open and will close on March 14. Visit www.qld.gov.au/anzac100.

Pets

We want your pet photos GCNews is giving pet lovers a chance to have their favourite pet celebrated in a special book about Sunshine Coast people and their pets. In the second GCNews edition of each month we feature a Pets and Animals page highlighting the great services and products local businesses provide for our pets. Each month we’d like to publish a selection of photos of pets sent in by our readers, who then go into the draw to win one of four opportunities to be featured in the 2014 edition of the book ‘Sunshine Coast’s Best Friends, Pets and Their People’. 16

‘Great Results Guarantee’

It is great to see that 15 schools in the Glass House electorate will share in $928,874 under the ‘Great Results Guarantee’ and I am pleased to announce that local schools receiving funding include Beerburrum State School for $38,116, Glass House Mountains State School for $96,756 and Peachester State School for $26,636. The majority of this funding will be targeted at the early years of school and is part of the Government’s commitment to boost student outcomes in Queensland state schools. Principals, in consultation with their school communities, will develop an agreement which will be entered into with the Director General of the Department of Education, Training and Employment. Schools plans could include after-school numeracy tutoring, reading workshops for parents or a coach to improve teachers’ skills in delivering programs for students with a disability. This is a great outcome for our local schools and students.

Anzac Grants program announced

Funding has just been announced for eligible community groups who are interested in hosting events or projects to mark the centenary of the First World War. The Queensland ANZAC Centenary Grants Program will provide individual funding of up to $80,000 for local projects to commemorate the centenary of the First World War between 2014 - 2018. This really is one of the most significant anniversaries of modern times and we want to encourage every community to participate in some way. Applications for the first round of grants will close in March 2014 – if you would like more details please call my office on 5435 2013 and a grants pack can be mailed to you or visit www.qld.gov.au/anzac100

Becoming a better listener

People sometimes ask me, why does a musician hear so much more in a song than the average person and my reply is, because they are trained to listen actively to discern its components. In the same way that a chef might look at a meal and immediately know its contents and how it was prepared. Training in music will enable you to become a better listener, but try this to get started: Take a song you like and listen to the instrumental components and see if you can identify them, e.g. bass, drums, piano, string orchestra, acoustic guitar etc. Now listen to the arrangement. Does the song begin sparsely with the piano and voice and then the chorus acoustic guitar enters with bass and drums? Get a good sense of what is playing where in the song. Now take one instrument and listen to it right through the song. Does it have primarily a melodic, harmonic or rhythmic role? Is it supporting the other instruments or is it leading them? How does it achieve that in the song? The production (what is done with the recording) will play a big role in determining how you hear the instrument. It might be more or less prominent in various parts of the tune. Try listening on headphones for example and you will become very aware of the instrument’s position in the stereo field. See if you can work out the song structure. It might start with an introduction, and then you will probably have verse 1, verse 2, then a chorus etc. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what a section is called. You can name them A1, A2, B etc. All of the above is before we start to consider things that require some musical training - key, tempo and time signature for example. But there are musical things you may notice without even being a musician. For example the song might use the same chord progression as another well-known song. Don’t be surprised, it happens often! And something you can try if you are a little bit musical is to sing the different parts. It can be fun but don’t be disappointed if you are challenged by the harmonies of the backing vocalists, or in finding the right octave for the bass part. It happens to musicians too! Have a creative musical month,

Get up&Grow with Jade King

Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening

Untamed veggies

What an incredible time of massive growth we are having with the weather of late! My pumpkins have gone crazy, tomatoes are coming up everywhere, lettuce are self-seeding wildly and everything else I can barely see because of the prolific growth of Weeds! So things have got away a bit at the moment. However in general, summer is just a messy time of year in the patch with all of the rambling vegetables like cucumber, pumpkin, watermelon, sweet potato and zucchini, escaping the neat confines of our garden beds. This is actually really great though, because as we near the end of summer, there is a copious amount of vegetative matter that can all be used to build up the compost. Another option is you can just compost it straight back into the soil. When doing this, throw on a bit of lime or dolomite along with some dynamic lifter or chook manure and then hoe it all in together. Also, underneath all of the tangled mass, an idyllic little haven has been created for all the beneficial soil micro-organisms to accumulate and ameliorate your soil. So whether you remove it, or dig it in, you have your own little army of organisms ready to work for you to revitalise and prepare your soil for the coming winter season. So this coming month, I will be doing loads of tidying up and preparing the patch for the neatness of winter crops! I will also be looking forward to the variation in our meal time vegetables. I am at this stage, very much over zucchini, but know that by next spring I’ll be looking forward to them in season again. I hope you all are able to get out and about in this beautiful weather and spruce up your patch. Until next time in Get Up and Grow! Pumpkin vines growing over the rock face

Proudly sponsored by Coochin Creek Co-op for all your gardening needs 39 Simpson St, Beerwah Ph: 5494 6219 Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others.

Serious weed vine found in Glass House When it comes to environmental weeds, the really bad guys are the invasive vines. And the baddest of the bad is a nasty one called Cats Claw Creeper. Not only does it destroy bushland by totally smothering the native trees and shrubs – especially along waterways, it is very hard to control once it gets established. Recently, Council officers found an infestation of Cats Claw Creeper growing along Coonowrin Creek near Glass House Mountains. According to Sunshine Coast Council Conservation Partnerships Officer Nick Clancy, the weedy vine is declared as a Class 3 pest in Queensland and was recently listed as a weed of national significance. “Council is keen to hear from any landholders on Coonowrin Creek or in the Glass House area that think they may have the vine growing on their property,” said Nick. Named for its cat claw like tendrils, the vine has distinctive yellow bell shaped flowers that bloom in Spring. “The vines are currently laden with hanging flat green seed pods which will ripen in coming weeks. “If you think you have this vine growing on your property you may be eligible to receive assistance through the Councils Landholder environment grants, for more information please contact Council on 5475 7272 and ask to speak to a Conservation Partnerships Officer,” said Nick. A very good information sheet on the weed can be found on the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries website – www.daff.qld.gov.au – then search for ‘cats claw creeper’.

Plant of the month

Banksia robur (Swamp Banksia)

Banksia robur is one of our most attractive native plants found in remaining wallum in our local area. Found in coastal areas from North Queensland to the Illawarra area of New South Wales, this Banksia is suitable for home gardens, rarely growing taller than 2 metres and up to 2 metres in width. The leaves are large, stiff, and serrated, dark green on the upper surface but paler underneath, and velvety to touch. The flowers are most spectacular, in the bud form bluish green in colour, but change to yellow green as they open fully. The fruit or follicles form in ‘cones’ following flowering. These are hard and woody and only open to release seed following fire or extreme temperatures. Banksia seed can be released by placing in an oven on a low temperature. Though this shrub naturally grows in damp areas, it can be grown successfully in drier areas in the home garden. As the name indicates, Banksias were named for Joseph Banks who travelled to Australia with Captain Cook.

Money Money Money! Money is a strange commodity. If you don’t have any, life can be very difficult, but if you have lots of it, you have to fight selfishness and may have friends who are not genuine. Life involves the receiving, spending, saving and giving of money. Everyone has different money habits and ways of using finance but interestingly we all access the same pool of money. Our finances are usually a very personal matter – something that we rarely talk about with anyone (except for our bank manager) but it is a really important topic to discuss. Money enables us to be able to maintain a home, a car, have clothes and food – all the basics but it also gives us the ability to have a quality life – have hobbies and interests, go to a nice restaurant with friends, purchase books and DVDs, buy someone a gift, get an education, maybe even travel. Some of the traps that we can easily fall into with our finances involve getting into excess debt, overuse of credit cards, buying stuff we

don’t need and giving money to people (often family members) who really should be supporting themselves. One of the best decisions my wife and I made was to set up an automatic deduction from our bank account into a sub-account for savings. It is amazing how even a small amount each week can build up to a reasonable amount quite quickly. Budgeting well and planning ahead means that there are no surprises when it comes to our finances. I want to throw out a challenge for us to work at being good ‘stewards’ of our money – which means using it wisely and in a balanced way. Not being a scrooge but not throwing it away. I hope you have a great year in 2014!

Canadian John had long heard the stories of an amazing family tradition. It appeared that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 18th birthday. On that special day, they'd each walked across the lake to the pub on the far side for their first legal drink. So when John's 18th birthday came around, he and his pal Mick, took a boat out to the middle of the lake, John, stepped out of the boat... and nearly drowned! Mick just barely managed to

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This week is about change and you will have to be ready to adapt. With Mercury being retrograde this week, prepare to be willing to break new ground, entertain new ideas and ways of doing things. There may be a price with that, such as new equipment. Before speaking out, make sure you have all the facts. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The grounding Taurus Moon this week may involve you in a local activity. Mercury now going retrograde in your sign, may make ordinary life confusing for the next three weeks. It’s just one of those times that misunderstandings are rampant. It’s good to see the best in everybody, but be realistic now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Strong thoughts are coming into you out of the blue this week, and should be given just consideration as they may hold the seeds for making life richer and more comfortable. Take note that with Mercury turning retrograde, it would be very mindful to double check all your activities over the next three weeks. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The Taurus Moon from February 5 to 7 this week brings a much needed change of direction. This is the week that you might want to keep enjoying the good life. For the next three weeks as Mercury retrogrades you will be re-evaluating your possessions and realise many are wasteful and also inconvenient.

Week beginning 05/02/14

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Your ruler is the planet Mercury and makes its first retrograde backwards movement of 2014 on February 6. Some of the characteristics of confusion will apply to your career affairs, or conversations with your parents. Mercury, when it returns to Aquarius, may not give you the best results re technology. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Program your diary or your iPhone to alert you from February 14 to 16 that you can expect a lively, domestic agenda, putting up visitors or family members. Venus is in your relationship zone, humming away, bringing Capricorn devotion and long time commitment into your partnership. LEO July 23 – August 22 For the beginning of the week, it’s best to avoid touchy topics. There is an accent upon moral values which should be recognised. If you have philosophies that are too materialistic or set in stone, you may be in for a shock. Mercury’s backward movement for three weeks may see your shares fall dramatically. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Your ruler Mercury has been happily travelling along in Pisces enhancing relationship discussions. When this planet moves backwards from February 6, conversations and communication that you hear will not be totally accurate. Mercury after February 12 returns to the subject of revising both work and health patterns.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The purse strings, and who is in control of your finances, could be an issue and for a couple of days some are unlikely to give an inch. Changes in travel and other plans may have to be made. This is the result of the travel planet Mercury turning retrograde, asking you to reorganise the work place and make changes. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This week the Taurus Moon will bring the joy of spending lunch and dinner at various restaurants with your partner and / or companions. Mercury returns to Aquarius mid month, and so you find privacy essential in your home zone. Be ready for Valentine’s pressure cooker romantic expectations and be positive. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 It may be possible that you are misreading another’s signals, or vice versa. If a clash comes, don’t make pushy moves, as they will not come off well. Mercury’s backwards movement signals the need for home property repairs that may surface over the next three weeks. These may be weather related. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 With Mercury moving through Pisces and then backwards into Aquarius, your intuition and imagination reaches an all time high. You may even find yourself basking in a creative or artistic glow! Some new computer programs bring sensitivity with your mundane knowledge. Professional advantage coming.

pull him to safety. Furious and confused, John went to see his grandmother. “Grandma,” he asked, “it's my 18th birthday, so why can't I walk across the lake like my father, his father, and his father before him?” Granny looked deeply into John's, troubled brown eyes and said, “because your father, your grandfather and your great grandfather were all born in December, when the lake is frozen, and you were born in August.” Submitted by Maree Robinson
