Hi Everyone
W
ell just wanted to share a bit of a milestone for me as the editor of Glasshouse Country News. This column marks my 480th, yes we do 48 editions a year, and this week I have been in the job for 10 years, so at around 220 words that is somewhere in the order of 105,000 words. And I know what some of you will be thinking – Lea it shouldn’t be about the quantity but the quality, well hopefully the fact that you are reading this is a good sign that you still enjoy what we do. It is quite amazing when we go back over our old editions how much
things have changed over the past 10 years, and how much the paper has evolved during that time. And everyone who knows me is aware that I don’t mind being the centre of attention, however I really wanted to let everyone who has been a part of ‘Team GCNews’ over the past decade, know how appreciative Brownie and I are of their efforts. Putting together a paper each week and making sure it gets into the hands of our dedicated readers does have its challenges. Importantly I think we all share a sense of pride in playing a part in is helping to keeping our local communities connected and making Glasshouse Country a great place to live. Regards,
This Week in GCNews

‘Fight Night’ tournament By Sonia Clark
In an exciting first for the local Hinterland community - Hinterland Boxing Club (HBC) will be hosting an Olympic style boxing tournament to be held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Saturday, November 8. HBC is affiliated with Boxing Queensland which in turn is associated with Boxing Australia and AIBA. Through these affiliations the tournaments operate at an extremely high level of professionalism that provides the amateur competitors with potential pathways to Olympic and world championship levels. The special ‘Fight Night’ event will showcase the talents of the HBC club training program which will feature six young local rising stars. Although amateurs, they all endure professional athletes training with around 10 training sessions a week to ensure that they are at the peak of their game. Owner of HBC, Steve Pitt says “boxing is a tough sport”; to compete with the high level of professionalism displayed by the young stars involves “not just a physicality but a maturity and emotional resilience.” Steve is excited that people can come along and be able to experience a different side to the traditional expectations of what a boxing tournament is. He feels people will be ‘very

Call Leisa or Michelle impressed’ with the elite level of competition, professionalism and skill on display. The event will see competitors from all over the state compete – this will be one of the final tournaments before state titles so the level of competition will be extremely high. Manager of Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Kylie Thompson is also energised about the night. The event promises to be “something new and exciting for the locals,” she said. So come along and support our local hinterland boxing team. Adults $20.00, children $10.00 (Under 10 years free) and a family pass (two adults and two children) will be $45.00. With major support from the Beerwah Hotel, and excess proceeds going towards local charities, the event kicks off at 5.00pm. Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, 902 Steve Irwin Way. Festival sparked Glasshouse Country The Glasshouse Country Festival (October 17 - 26) sparked fun and community pride, showing the wonderful attributes the area has to offer.
Keep your home cool this summer With custom made awnings and blinds. For advice on what will suit your home call now to arrange a free measure and quote.
The festival attracted over 9,500 locals and visitors to celebrate the unique arts, culture, environment and heritage of Glasshouse Country. The festival’s biggest bang was the Beerwah Celebration, with over 7,000 people filling Simpson Street and bringing a buzz to Beerwah. The festival fun continued at the 25 events throughout the 10 days. The Nungeena Sharing Knowledge and Yarning Circle Afternoon was a special event with Indigenous elders and others sharing their stories and wisdom with people who came from all around. The Peachester community showed all their creativity, history and wonderful people at the Peachester Showcase and Cemetery Tour. GMAN explored the scenic walking tracks around the area, giving fellow walkers a greater appreciation of the rare and important plant species in the area. The Sandy Creek Organic Farm Tour was popular
for kids and adults, who had fun getting their hands dirty planting vegetables amongst the scenic mountain surroundings. The steam train tooted its way along the tracks taking people to Glass House Mountains, the Historical Landsborough Day and Mooloolah Fun Fair, where more fun was to be had. Amazing artworks were on display at the Glasshouse Country Art Exhibition and people were lucky enough to try their hands at creating their own pieces with many of the talented local artists. These and the many other festival events created a vibrant community atmosphere across Glasshouse Country. Congratulations to the winner of the event entry coupon competition, Kristie Juleff, of Glass House Mountains. The prize was a weekend away at the Glass House Mountains Ecolodge. Festival organisers sincerely thank all sponsors and event hosts for their invaluable contributions to the festival. To give feedback on the festival or express your interest to be involved next time, please contact the festival organisers at www. glasshousecountryfestival.com.au.

Fullerton farming legacy celebrated When Robert and wife Isabella Fullerton moved to Glass House Mountains in 1914 they could have had no idea of the lasting legacy they were creating or the contribution the future generations of the Fullerton family would make to both the farming industry and their local community. Last weekend a celebration was held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports club, a club the family have been instrumental in establishing, to acknowledge and commemorate the efforts of the family members as well as those who have played a part of the centenary of their farm. The Fullerton family – mum, dad and eight children, (six boys and two girls) – travelled from Scotland to make Australia their home with the family eventually settling permanently in Glass House Mountains. At that time pineapple farming was already being undertaken in the area with some success, so Robert decided to try his hand at it. All of Robert’s boys were involved in farming, and during the 50s and 60s they would have all been growing pineapples for Golden Circle; today many of their descendents are still involved in farming. The youngest two sons – William and Alister (who was the only member of the family to be born in Australia) – formed a partnership with their father Robert in the late 1920s to create the farming company ‘R Fullerton and Sons’.
Two of William’s sons, Ken and Barry, and Alister’s son Lindsay Fullerton were the third generation of the family to run the farm. Sadly Barry passed away earlier this year, however Ken and Lindsay are still actively involved in day-today farm life. They handed over the management to their sons in the late 90's. These days Ken’s three sons, Chris, Scot and Ken (junior), and Lindsay’s son Robert run the farm, while both Ken and Lindsay remain Directors in the company. While pineapples have always been the mainstay of their business, over the years their crops also included citrus, pine trees, and melons and these days about 50% of their production is in macadamia nuts. Originally the farm consisted of 160 acres in
By Lea Parkes Glass House Mountains and over the years they have expanded. In 1939 they purchased 197 acres on Peachester Road at Beerwah and moved most of the farming there. More expansion happened with the purchase of 407 acres at Elimbah, which these days is fully developed with 300 of those acres growing pineapples. Ken said since 1947 there has always been a Fullerton involved in administrative roles within the pineapple industry. Currently, Chris is the Chair of a peak pineapple growers industry body and sits on the Pineapple Industry Advisory Committee. Throughout the 100 year history, the Fullertons have employed many locals. Some families have even had multiple generations who have worked at the farm, and at Saturday’s function they had compiled a list of nearly everyone who had been employed on the farm since 1938. While Ken and Lindsay would like to see the farm move into its fifth generation of Fullerton farmers, the next generation of boys, Sam (15) Troy (17) and Harry (14) said they all like being part of the farm but weren’t thinking of it as a full-time career. However, Chris has two energetic twin four-yearold daughters – Jade and Zahli. So you never know … maybe they will challenge the male tradition and lead the farms future into the next 100 years.

Community book launch Come and help raise funds for the Prince Charles Hospital cardiac unit whilst celebrating the launch of three new books from talented local authors. Glass House Community Hall will play host to a Multiple Book Launch event on Tuesday, November 18 from 10.00am until 12.00noon. The three authors are – Neville Saffron, whose robustly written and entertaining ‘Tales from the Shearing Shed’ encompasses both prose and verse; Lee Paterson who, who in his enchanting and fascinating book ‘The Wheat Wanderers’, takes the reader on a journey of personal experience through the outback and into Australian history; and University of the Third age tutor Kate Wright who is launching her latest book ‘Planet 666’ in which a man-made planet secures the safety of Earth’s government at the end of the world. The morning will feature storytelling from the three local authors as well as presentations from guest speakers, morning tea upon arrival by Beerwah CWA, a tai chi demonstration and door prizes. All the books were written whilst in rehabilitation after cardiovascular treatment at Prince Charles Hospital. Jo-Anne Miller, the state Shadow Minister for Health, will deliver the keynote speech along with support from Michael Hornby, CEO of the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation. Community groups and organisations are encouraged to come along for a fun-filled morning and group bookings are welcome. Admission is free; however a gold coin donation would be appreciated. Along with the book launch and related storytelling there will also be books to purchase from the Beerwah Writers Group and students of U3A. Halls Creek opposition grows The anguish is mounting amongst local residents who are unhappy with the State Governments plans to include Halls Creek – a massive 3,200 hectare area of land south of Bells Creek and adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage – as a future citysized housing development. Local MP’s Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell have been tasked with finding out what locals think of the Halls Creek proposal, and from a community meeting held at Glass House Mountains recently, people consider the idea a ‘stinker’. The meeting organisers – Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) – say a small crowd gathered to hear the devastating facts about the proposal to house a further 35,000 people on the flood-prone lands draining into Pumicestone Passage. Locals concerned about the economic, social and environmental future of our region are being asked to make their voices heard by filling out the objection letter (printed on page 29) and either post it to one of the State MP’s or drop it into the collection boxes at Beerburrum, Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough. Sunshine Coast Council have consistently strongly criticised the inclusion of Halls Creek in any future urban growth plans for the region, arguing instead for urban development along the Landsborough to Beerwah corridor (called Beerwah East). At a closed, in-camera Special Meeting recently, council discussed a proposal to send a preliminary submission to the State Government prior to their
release of the draft SEQ Regional Plan. Asked about this submission, a council spokesperson said that they will be providing a preliminary submission to the State Government on the SEQ Regional Plan and will make that submission publicly available at the appropriate time. “The preliminary submission responds to the State Government’s recent request for council’s input on the SEQ Regional Plan Identified Growth Areas and a revised urban footprint,” the spokesperson said. Given council’s prior passionate rebuttal of the need for future urban development at the Halls Creek site, the local community will be eager to see that council again supports their stance in the preliminary submission, once released for public scrutiny. To assist council in getting the message across, an alliance of community groups from across the Sunshine Coast have banded together to say ‘Hands off Halls Creek’. They declare that the choice between Halls Creek and Beerwah East (the area council prefers to investigate for future urban growth) has major implications for the future of our community across a wide range of issues including transport infrastructure, the future viability of business centres in Glasshouse Country towns, the health of the Pumicestone Passage and the tourism industry it supports, and the character and lifestyle that make our community unique. “Our council has consistently rejected the possibility of development at Halls Creek since the early 2000s,” said Gwen Malcolm from GMAN.
“But the State is forcing council to allow the possibility that the area (Halls Creek) will get developed in the future against the wishes of council and community interest groups,” she said. The next community information forum is being held at the Landsborough Hall on Friday, November 21, starting at 7.00pm. This meeting is being hosted by the Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA).

Maleny local and former Beerwah High student Stacey Bentley completed the first entry for the 2015 Maleny Show Quest last week nominating for both the Rural Ambassador and Charity categories.
Stacey is the first entrant in next year’s competition and it is the second year she has participated in the event. Last year Stacey took out second place in Miss Showgirl and she is keen to encourage other locals to get organised and register for the event.
Miss Showgirl Co-ordinator Helen Gilmour Walsh with Stacey Bentley and Maleny Show Society Secretary Lois White
Stacey is studying full-time at the Sunshine Coast University doing Human Resource Management and International Business and works part-time at the Landsborough Post Office. There are four categories that locals can nominate, so along with the Rural Ambassador and Charity there is also Miss Showgirl and Show Princess. Miss Showgirl Co-ordinator, Helen Gilmour Walsh said participating within the showgirl and charity categories, gives the nominee the opportunity to not only become recognised within the community but also to develop skills in fundraising, interviewing, public speaking and conduct. “The whole experience is very rewarding and is highly recommended,” she said. The funds raised through the program provide valuable assistance to the ongoing development of the Show grounds; the funds raised in 2015 will be allocated to building an undercover seating area behind the Show Pavilion. If you would like to know more about the program, and how to nominate, check out the Show Societies website where all of the information can be found about each of the categories.www.malenyshowsociety.org.au Or you can speak to the Showgirl Co-ordinator Helen Gilmour Walsh on 0418 163 118.

Great result despite the rain Remember the extremely wet weekend in August, when the 2014 Charity Sports could have been a wash out? The exciting news is that with accounts finalised for the year, the Charity Sports Committee were able to present $17,000 to Cancer Council Queensland last week as the proceeds from their 2014 fundraising.
Fresh and cooked seafood We pride ourselves in supplying good quality Australian and New Zealand seafood, both fresh or snap frozen
Christmas is only 7 weeks away! We are taking Christmas orders NOW!
Committee Chairman Bruce Page said that the whole community can congratulate itself on this result. As usual it was a magnificent team effort, with extra commitment on this occasion to persevere in such trying conditions. While it was disappointing that the ring events had to be cancelled, most of the program and stalls went ahead despite the weather. Many people braved the elements and came down to the grounds, bought up bargains on the stalls, enjoyed the food and entertainment, and turned it into a really positive event! CCQ and the Charity Sports Committee would like to convey a huge thank you to all who helped achieve this fantastic result: the generous sponsors who had already made their contribution, all the volunteers who worked in the rain, and the Glasshouse Country community for their loyal support.

Poppies bloom for remembrance It seems that any day now Australia could see a shortage of red wool, as thousands across the country have taken up the challenge of creating knitted and crocheted poppies as part of community tributes of remembrance 100 years on since World War 1 started. Not surprisingly the Maleny Community have taken to the idea with much enthusiasm. Last week I caught up with some of the ladies who have dedicated their time to creating what must be thousands of poppies, at their working bee at the Maleny RSL. The idea started out with a number of poppies being made when the Maleny Players performed ‘When Billy goes to War’. Then with enlisting the assistance of the Maleny Arts and Craft Group, Busy Needles, Quota, The Maleny Contract Bridge Club, Erowal Nursing Home, Maleny Library and Maleny RSL ladies, the project has grown spectacularly. Their hard work over the past few months will create a dramatic effect as the grounds surrounding the Cenotaph will be transformed with poppies winding around the perimeter. The group is keen to continue their handiwork and expect to have an even more dramatic display for ANZAC Day. They will also be used to
On Remembrance Day
Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch will host a Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph outside the Beerwah RSL, assemble at 10.45am for 10.50am start. Glasshouse Country RSL will hold a Commemorative Service to be held at the Cenotaph Settlers Rotary Park, garden area at the front of Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre. Form up 10.35am for commencement at 10.40am. A light luncheon will be available at the RSL Club after the Service. decorate the Show Pavilion at next year’s Maleny Show. The RSL would love some support with planting the poppies on Monday, November 10 between 8.00am – 10.00, please turn up and bring along a skinny screwdriver to create the holes required for planting the poppies. Or if you would like to participate in creating more poppies for ANZAC Day contact Helen Gilmour Walsh on 0418 163 118. The RSL would like to acknowledge the support from the Maleny IGA Community Chest for purchasing all of the materials required by the project.
10.58am Last Post and 11.01am Reveille 5th Light Horse Troupe and TS Centaur cadets will be attending. Peachester History Committee will host the annual Remembrance Day Service at Peachester Cemetery, 10.30am for 10.45am start, followed by lunch at the hall. All welcome, and please bring a plate to share for lunch. Beerwah Library will hold a special morning tea from 10.30am, join us while taking in the library poppy craft displays. The poppies made in the library will be sent to Melbourne and on Anzac Day 2015 a field of handmade poppies will be ‘planted’ in Federation Square. Free. No bookings required.
Each year in November we pause to reflect on the service and sacrifice of all those involved in past and present military conflicts. While the focus of commemoration is usually on significant dates and events, there are countless personal stories which give us some insight into the important work going on behind the scenes. Peachester History Committee member Elva Dimsey joined the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service in September 1943 at the age of 18, her Army Number being VP513445. After one month of ‘rookie’ school in Darley, Victoria, Private Elva Florence Gooding was transferred to the Casualty Clearing Station at Geelong. Elva then went to the Headquarters of the AAMWS in Melbourne and was finally posted to Heidelberg Military Hospital, Victoria. She was deemed too young for overseas service. While Elva initially joined the AAMWS to do nursing, because of her secretarial skills, including shorthand, her services were in great demand by the various doctors at Heidelberg – she even worked for Weary Dunlop for a short period of time. It was there that she became personal and confidential secretary to Lt/Colonel (later Sir) Benjamin Rank, plastic surgeon, who was in charge of the facio-maxillary and plastic surgery unit within the Military Hospital at Heidelberg. After the War ended, Elva obtained an early discharge in February 1946, which was organised by Lt/Col Rank so that she could work for him in private practice in Collins Street, Melbourne. Elva served with the AAMWS for 896 days, and is a Life Member of the RSL. Private Elva Gooding

If so, the Beerwah Fire Station needs you. Auxiliary firefighters are men and women from all walks of life who live or work close to their local fire station and can respond to emergency situations when needed. Most Auxiliary Firefighters hold regular jobs within their local communities and perform their firefighting role in a part-time capacity. Auxiliary Firefighters are not volunteers. They are paid for their time to attend fire calls and to also undertake specialist training specific to the role of fire and rescue operations. The basic criteria for an applicant is that they are an Australian Citizen, have community spirt and live or work within a reasonable distance from the Beerwah Fire Station.

and the kids talked to people from all over the world. There was a Morse Code base, semaphore and coding. The Internet base was a hit with the kids, who chatted online to Scouts from all round the world. A highlight was that they got to talk on Scout radio that was broadcast from England. Just to throw some more fun into the camp, Laser Assault was run non-stop for the entire weekend. What a blast the kids had! A record for the 13th Girl Torque Bras n’ Bikes Charity Ride
The sun was shining down on the record 430 riders who took part in the 13th Bras n’ Bikes Charity Ride on Sunday, October 26. Taking to Sunshine Coast roads to raise money for Bloomhill Cancer Help, the group resplendent in pink completed the 200km round trip from Aussie World to Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club for lunch to conclude the ride. Monies raised have reached $10,000 and will provide Bloomhill with the ability to offer the following services to their clients, 80 trips to Brisbane for treatment, 150 therapies such as Oncology massages, reflexology and lymphatic drainage massages and 58 sessions of counselling for clients and their families and/or carers. Bloomhill Cancer Help General Manager, Mervat Quirke said that Bloomhill is honoured to continue their partnership with Girl Torque and remain the beneficiary of the fundraiser this year. “All the funds Bloomhill receives from the Bras n’ Bikes ride will allow us to continue to deliver vital support services to just on 800 clients on the Sunshine Coast affected by cancer,” Mervat said. Bloomhill Cancer Help is a Sunshine Coast based charity that provides support and assistance to people of every age to help them to live well with cancer. Operated by a team of dedicated professional staff and hundreds of volunteers, Bloomhill offers counselling, transport to appointments, respite care and a range of complementary therapies and other practical help. With no ongoing government funding, the charity relies on donations and fundraising to continue providing its valuable services. A visit to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
A keen group of Probians from Glasshouse visited the Reserve for our monthly outing in October. We chose the pre-booked guided walk with dedicated volunteers to showcase and explain the flora and fauna that is being so well preserved in the subtropical rainforest sanctuary. Our guides took us on a slow and detailed adventure along the well-marked walks, pointing out the Red Legged Pademelons, the trap door of the Golden Orb Spider, giant earthworm holes carefully covered by decaying leaf litter, and the large variety of often noisy birds such as the Eastern Whipbird, Green Catbird and the many varieties of wrens. It was such a delight to hear the collective sounds of the many rainforest birds. At the end of our tour we adjourned to the café for a wonderful lunch and lively discussions about what we had learnt and seen. If you are new to the hinterland area, or recently retired, Probus might be for you. We are the Glasshouse Combined Probus Club and provide opportunities to keep minds active, expand interests, build relationships and enjoy the fellowship of like-minded friends. We have monthly meetings, held at 10.00am on the second Wednesday of each month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. If you would like more information please phone Val Machin on 5494 1406.
Community support
Recently the Beerwah Lions donated funds of $1,037.00 to the Glasshouse Country Men's Shed that operates from Glasshouse Country Care. The Men’s Shed had decided to use the funds to purchase a big blue tarp and a shed for the protection of their equipment. The Morayfield Lions also donated 35 pairs of protective safety glasses on the same night. Lions’ President, Patricia Jutila delivered the glasses and presented the Men’s Shed President, Bob Caruthers the cheque. The big tarp has already been put to good use at the recent Beerwah Celebrations.

NOVEMBER 5 2014
Contributed by Helen Weil It’s that time again for our club to hold its November dog shows. We are holding three shows on November 15 and 16 at the Beerwah Sportsground. As usual there will be a huge variety of breeds shown, many of them old favourites but many newer and less familiar breeds, too. The first show is on Saturday commencing at 4.00pm when seven rings will be operating, one for each of the seven groups that breeds are divided into – Toys, Terriers, Gundogs, Hounds, Working Dogs, Utility and Non-sporting – with breeds in each being judged alphabetically. Come early to see Afghans, Australian Cattle Dogs and Akitas, later for breeds like Welsh Corgis or Weimaraners. On Sunday judging commences for our Open Show at 8.30am and the Championship Show at
Peachester CWA
9.00am. These two shows will run side-by-side, so there will be 14 rings operating. Our club and the exhibitors welcome you to come along and watch the activity in the rings, talk about dogs, pat the pups and generally enjoy the canine atmosphere. Exhibitors love to talk about their dogs and share their knowledge about their breeds. There will be a super canteen for drinks and eats as well as a coffee van. Several ‘doggy’ stalls will be selling a variety of products ranging from food to leads to pet care to photography and lots more. Our sponsor for this show is Royal Canin who will be available to advise on pet nutrition and have samples of their food products. There’s lots to come and see - drop in and enjoy the event. For more information contact David on 0488 947 444.

On Thursday, October 9 five members attended the Nambour north coast divisional meeting at Maleny where we discussed buying property for a new headquarters for the division. CWA members celebrated our branch’s 69th birthday on Thursday, October 16 with a luncheon at ‘Collectables’ Peachester. After two full days setting up for the ‘showcasing of Peachester’ on Sunday, October 19, a marvellous display of what people are doing was created. Unfortunately the attendance was disappointing. The raffle, which was held in support of rural women was won by Judy Stubbs of Maleny.
Second prize went to Gwen Kippen of Beerwah. A big thank you to the people who set up the displays and those who helped either with the setting up or the cleaning up following the event. We also met to make some items for our Christmas markets on November 29. A jumping castle will be at the markets along with fairy floss, homemade lollies, great plants and many delightful gifts for Christmas, etc. This year’s state conference is at Ipswich and our first delegate will be attending. Two members are still helping with the cooking at the Peachester State School as part of the Stephanie Alexander Program.
Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Club Inc. Contributed by Ian McCarron At our last games day the lucky door prize winner was Lola Vollbrecht and the raffle was won by Ernesta De Clara. In carpet bowls: Margaret Lamb and Ernesta De Clara beat Billie Lupton and Neville Woolley 38 – 10. Numerous prizes were won in cards games. Reminders: Tuesday, November 11 - monthly
meeting (barbeque). Morning tea 9.00am – 9.15am. Cake, hot water, and small tables for barbecue please. Wednesday, November 12 - Unfortunately our visit to Esk has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Tuesday, November 25 - Games day. Tuesday, December 9 - Christmas Party (remember to book for this big day.)
Is your gardening being interrupted by discomfort? After serving Beerwah over the past 5 years, one thing I’ve learned is this region loves gardening! Another thing I’ve learned is that gardening can be extremely stressful on your spine. People often ask “how did my spine get this way? I didn’t do anything to hurt it!” While trauma or accidents are a common cause of spinal subluxation, by far the most common cause is an accumulation of the stresses we put on our spines each day. When that accumulation reaches a level that the body can no longer adapt to, we get a symptom. There are usually warning signs along the way, such as stiffness in the morning or a minor niggle that seems to go away once you get moving. But if these warning signs are ignored, guess what happens? A major breakdown … massive back pain … days off from work … missing out on things you enjoy because it hurts too much … relationship stress because people in pain are quite grumpy.
Beerwah – 5494 0499
Get the picture? Your spine is pretty important! This is why our mission is to provide the best possible chiropractic care to correct spinal subluxations, and also the best possible advice to avoid re-creating these problems in the future, so you can live your best life pain-free, naturally. If gardening or any of your other daily tasks and hobbies aren’t as easy as they used to be, call Dr Braxton at Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499.

Celebrate the wonder and joy of early childhood at KinderMarlee The well loved Landsborough Child Care Centre recently changed hands in August of this year. Rebranded with the new name ‘KinderMarlee’, the new private family owner has brought a vision of excellence to the centre that combines the very best practices from contemporary Australian and international childcare centres, along with a commitment to honouring traditional childhood values of outdoor play, exploration and developing friendships. This vision seeks to ensure the highest quality outcomes for children and reiterates our values that seek to celebrate the wonder and joy of early childhood and encourage a deep love of learning. The long-term well established team is still in place and our continued commitment to families and building relationships within the local community are a priority. Believing that early learning is best developed through social play and interaction, our warm
and responsive team is there to enable, enrich and encourage our young children with strong supportive relationships and the freedom to experiment and explore. At KinderMarlee we offer an approved kindergarten program but also have the added benefits of longer hours and school holiday care options. As part of our social and educational program our centre provides our children with the opportunities to experience the benefits of a mixed aged group. Children can enjoy multi aged interaction which can provide additional learning and leadership opportunities in an engaging, fun and safe environment. Our unique curriculum is called, ‘Connect Contribute Create’ and our philosophy celebrates children as competent and caring people. The centre is committed to providing children opportunities to show responsibility, make positive choices and look after each other.
Business feature
We want to be a strong advocate to help parents recognise the positive changes in childcare under the National Curriculum and that early development is about building lifelong learning dispositions and ecological identities – supporting positive and contributing future citizens. Nothing in life is more precious than the first few years and that’s why we cherish childhood. We believe the early years should be free; filled with connection, contribution and creativity - as well as with lots of awe and wonder!
Early Childhood Centre & Approved Kindergarten Children, and childhood, are precious. We believe in celebrating wonder, joy and a love of learning. All families welcome. $67 day—CCB/CCR

Christmas raffle will help locals breathe easier
The Maleny Chamber of Commerce members have begun the countdown to the Maleny Christmas Carnival on December 12, and their annual community raffle is in full swing. Each year the funds raised are contributed to the local community and this year they will be used for the purchase of a Spirometer for the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The Spirometer is fast, reliable and an accurate diagnostic device used for lung function tests. These tests look at how your lungs are working, by understanding how well you breathe in and out. Maleny Commerce Secretary, Karen Shaw said 22 of their local businesses have generously contributed three thousand dollars’ worth of prizes to the raffle. The raffle tickets are available through these businesses, and many more options, so keep your eye out! “With six prizes on offer and at only $2.00 a ticket, we’d like to make this year our biggest community fundraiser to date,” Karen said. “And remember to buy local and support your community this Christmas!” The prizes have been bundled into six packs valued from $225.00 up to $1,000.00, these include: 1st – ‘Maleny Art Prize’ of four limited edition signed Gary Myers prints, framed by Holden Gallery valued at $1,000.00. 2nd – ‘Weekend in Maleny’ prize of accommodation for six people at Macadamia Letting and a $100.00 dining voucher at Key Restaurant (valued at $750.00). 3rd – ‘Midweek in Maleny’ prize of accommodation for two with breakfast at Maleny Lodge and a selection of vouchers for pizza, ice cream, coffee and books (valued at $360.00). 4th – ‘Feeling Good in Maleny’ prize of soul reading, lunch for two and gift, ice cream and coffee vouchers packaged in a recycled pallet crate (valued at $305.00). 5th – ‘A Diverse Maleny Shopping Experience’ with a $100.00 gift voucher from Immeldas and a selection of vouchers for native plants, clothing, meat and books (valued at $265.00). 6th – ‘Creative Maleny’ prize is a framed Japanese woodcut reproduction valued at $100.00, a Reg Mobassa book, jewellery voucher and a recycled pallet crate (valued at $225.00).
with President Ken Bannister On the Wednesday night before the big ‘Beerwah Celebration’ event, Council’s Project Manager for the Simpson Street revamp Adam Stewart came along to the Chamber networking night at Pasta d’Vine, doing a street tour for the group and providing explanations along the way on many of the more recently installed elements of the project. And clearly there was agreement that the overall final results of the Council’s work has dramatically transformed our main business district. There is definitely a heightened sense of vitality in the area as a result of it; and for this, the Chamber would like to thank Council for prioritising Beerwah for this project. Unfortunately the final success did mean that quite a few of the local businesses had taken a big hit during the months of the construction work when there was so much disruption in the street and many of them are just relieved that the work is completed and they can get back to ‘business as usual’. On the night of the ‘Street Party’ style celebrations it was hard not to get caught up in the positive feeling of the night. For me the night brought on a feeling of nostalgia from more than a decade ago when the Chamber of Commerce (or in those days the Business Association as it was known) was the driving force behind the Christmas Festival in Simpson Street. When my family and I moved to Beerwah in the late 90’s we arrived in midNovember, and I can clearly remember our first night in town, picking up fish and chips at Neddy’s Nosebag and being given a ticket in a Christmas draw. Being new to the town I had no idea what it was all about, but within weeks I would bring the family along to the Christmas Festival and I was just amazed at the community spirit and generosity of the local business community at creating such a great celebration. So now that I am back in the President’s seat I would really like to see at least that event resurrected for Christmas 2015, and if possible look at another event during the year that would unite the community and reinforce that sense of community pride in Beerwah that seemed to have gone missing for the past few years. Undertaking events of the size of the recent ‘Beerwah Celebrations’ needs some serious funding, but if we continue the great work done by the many community groups and individual businesses involved, then hopefully together we can create new and memorable events that remind us all what we love about living in a ‘modern country town’. This month there will be two Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce events, on Wednesday, November 19 there is a Networking Night at the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre at 5.30pm, it is free to attend however if anyone wanted to attend please rsvp via our website www.glasshousemountains. com.au for catering purposes. On Tuesday, November 25 there will be a general meeting at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club from 5.30pm. www.gcnews.com.au

NBN Co is dedicated to having an honest conversation with the Maleny community about radio communications, and relies on accepted, peerreviewed science and when discussing these issues.
“Based on the assessment of the scientific evidence from January 2000 till August 2012, the Expert Panel find that the underlying basis of the ARPANSA RF exposure Standard remains sound and that the exposure limits in the Standard continue to provide a high degree of protection against the known health effects of RF electromagnetic fields.” 3
From an environmental perspective, NBN fixed wireless facilities do not introduce anything new to the local environment. All radio communications facilities emit electromagnetic energy (EME) as radio frequency signals or “radio waves”, and numerous radio communications facilities already exist around Maleny.
ARPANSA also constantly evaluates emerging science, publishing a Literature Survey which is updated monthly, and is available on their website — www.arpansa.gov.au.
The Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) Register of Licensed Radio Communications facilities shows that between Reesville Rd to the West and Bald Knob to the east, there are more than 90 licensed radio facilities in operation around Maleny.1 Operators of these local sites include Optus, Vodafone & Telstra, Channel 7, Network 10 and the ABC, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club, and St Johns Ambulance.
Maleny EME Survey NBN Co commissioned a survey of the existing radio frequency signals present around Maleny. This survey was conducted by an accredited radio frequency assessor, and observed by community members on 16 September 2014. The survey found that radiofrequency energy is present across the Maleny community, but at very low levels. Cumulative radiofrequency energy levels ranged between 3,400 times below the Australian safety limit at Bald Knob, to 1 million times below the safety limit at Maleny State School. The strongest signal present at any test location was broadcast FM radio, transmitting from Bald Knob. FM radio signals were 6,600 times below the safety standard. In town, wi-fi was the largest contributor — but it was at an extremely low level — more than 450,000 times below the safety standard.2 These results are typical of the radiofrequency signals found in any developed environment.
Safety Standards Members of the community are being encouraged to believe that the Australian safety standards are not adequate, and are not based on up-todate science. Such claims are unfounded. The Australian safety standard (Radiocommunications Electromagnetic Radiation — Human Exposure Standard 2014) is designed to provide protection to all people, including vulnerable members of the community, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Importantly, a precautionary approach has been enshrined in the standard itself. The current standard, recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), was introduced to Australia in 2003, and in June 2014, an independent, expert Review Panel reconfirmed the adequacy of the standard following a detailed assessment of recent scientific literature. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA ) advises that its Review Panel considered more than 1300 separate pieces of scientific literature, including the “BioInitiative Report”, as well as the results of 72 major panel reviews. ARPANSA states:
What does the World Health Organisation say? The WHO provides very clear advice regarding the science and safety of radio communications: “From all the evidence accumulated so far, no adverse short or long term health effects have been shown to occur from the RF signals produced by base stations... Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF [radio frequency] signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects.” 4 The WHO has classified radiofrequency energy as a “Class 2B Possible Carcinogen.” Many substances, such as coffee, are classified as 2B, and it is important to understand what this listing really means. It does not mean that the substance is considered proven, or even probable, as a carcinogen. For radiofrequency, the listing relates to human exposure to hand-held mobile devices, and not to general public exposure to radio signals in the environment. That is because the direct exposure to the head from a mobile phone is up to 500,000 times greater than the radiofrequency found in the environment, which has an ambient impact on the general public. 5
NBN Co Compliance with Safety Standards Typically NBN fixed wireless communications facilities operate at radio signal strengths that are thousands of times below the safety limit. To put the signal strength into perspective, the general public exposure to radio signals from our fixed wireless network facilities is about one-tenth the power of a taxi’s two-way radio. NBN Co fixed wireless network facilities deliver a fast and reliable broadband service safely and responsibly, at signal strengths significantly below national and international safety limits. We hope this information provides the community at Maleny and across the Hinterland with an informed understanding of the sources of radiofrequency energy in the environment, as well as the scientific basis of the safety standards, and NBN Co’s compliance with them. NBN Co encourages anyone with queries or concerns about the safety and regulation of radio communications to contact ARPANSA directly on 1800 022 333. Anyone who wishes to obtain a copy of the Maleny EME Survey Report can request a copy from Claire Harris at Aurecon on (07) 3173 8738.

Small Minded Community
After reading the letter from Susan Richardson of Peachester in the October 15 edition of GCNews it has prompted me to have a say regarding ‘small minded community’. I do agree with Susan on this matter, for a small town there is so much negativity and back-stabbing going on. People put their hand up to help in fundraising events and get cut off at the knees for their efforts. Why is change so hard for people to deal with? If we don’t have change in our lives I for one would hate to think what a boring existence it would be. Come on Glasshouse why not pull together? Stop bickering and move forward. Kaz Glass House
Changes in Beerwah
I’ve seen a lot of changes in 20 years here in Beerwah. These days the roads are all bitumen, new estates have been built, and more recently, a new shop shopping centre. In the past I used to have Glider Possums, Ground Pheasants, Willy Wag Tails, and tiny little Finches in my garden however when the estates were built it was a mass exit from my yard and trees. I had large predator birds killing my little birds and snakes I had moved. This is about the predator human beings that are forgetting they are supposed to be human. A while ago another local wrote a letter to GCNews about some young children who came across a Plover’s nest (on the ground) while kicking their ball around. People in a neighbouring property politely asked could they find a place other than there to play. Later the children were brought back by adults in a vehicle who then ran over the nest with a car. My advice would be to live by example. How would they feel if the bird could drive a tractor and drove it through your home? After all, they would have just been following your example of retaliation or revenge. Have you ever watched the program called ‘It’s me or the dog?’ With just a few simple one word commands there is peace. Maybe if humans could be trained so easily our society would be a better place. These days it seems many people try to blame others for their problems, I will never understand people like them. We should treat others the way you’d like to be treated. So living by example, if you drive your car over a harmless little birds nest or king hit someone, or smash your car, just give a thought to the ‘It’s me or the dog’ program. You need to be trained to be a human. Concerned, Beerwah
Bike paths needed now
It’s great that council has spent our ratepayer money improving the main street of Beerwah, but there’s a big problem for people who live in Glass House. These kids (and adults) from Glass House Mountains can’t get in to enjoy the street by push-bike as there is no cycleway connecting the two towns. Instead of spending money on ugly sculptures, it would have made much more sense to use the money to join up the missing cycleway and foothpath between Beerwah and Glass House. I rang the council to ask about their plans and was told that it isn’t even being considered until after 2018. In the meantime, council are forcing our kids to ride on Steve Irwin Way to get to school, the skate park or into the main street of Beerwah – not to mention walkers and joggers, mothers pushing prams, backpacking tourists, and people in mobility scooters or wheelchairs. Landsborough people can safely ride a bike, go for a walk or push a pram into Beerwah, but not those from Glass House. It seems that council are more interested in street art than the health and safety of the very community they are meant to be looking after. It seems that Glass House people are secondclass citizens to them. If you live in Glass House and think that you deserve to be treated fairly and the same as those living in Beerwah or Landsborough, contact our local councillor – Rick Baberowski – and tell him what you think. The more people tell him it’s not right that our kids have to ride their bikes on Steve Irwin Way to get to Beerwah, the more likely council will do something about it now, before a tragic accident happens. Congratulations
Well done Damien Collins on a fourth place in his age group in one of the toughest events in the world, the Hawaiian Ironman in Kona. It's awesome to see Glasshouse Country athletes excelling on the world stage! Tim O'Shea Beerburrum Editor’s note Yes, Tim is our local Strong Man – who recently took out second Place in World Titles for Power Lifting!
I have to agree with J.Varlet in last week’s GCNews regarding shade and tables in Skippy Park. As I don’t get around much anymore, I have never been into Skippy Park but have driven past it many many times. The park I do go to quite a bit is the one in Beerwah next to the dog park (a very good idea). There are only two tables under the one shelter and last time we went there one family was using both tables, so we had to sit on a bench and balance our food. All the parks in Glass House Country area are very extensively used and all should have more tables to accommodate families who want to get out and enjoy the fresh air. I hope the council will do some upgrades to the parks soon as summer is coming….. no correction it is here! Dawn Hawkins Beerwah
New Fuel Tax rip-off
At 7.30am on Sunrise, on October 29, Senator Cormann – Minister of Finance tried to explain / sell the reasons for the increased fuel tax. His argument being that the tax has not kept up with inflation, hence the increase. He quoted the governments cut, off fuel excise at 42%. Well when fuel was $1.00 per litre that would equate to 42 cents per litre. Now the price of fuel is around $1.50 per litre, the Governments cut would be 63 cents per litre. Greed and inflation are the most probable reasons for the increased cost of fuel. He then tried to say that because of inflation, the government was in reality only getting 25% in fuel tax, and has not kept up! What a load off hogwash! How stupid does he think we are? The main issue he then submitted was that the increase was designed to bring down national debt. When a poll revealed 96% of the public objecting to the increases, he basically intimated that the public would get used to it, knowing that they were doing a good thing for the country as a whole. Towards the end of the interview, in his last remarks, he then said that the monies raised would be used to build infrastructure. As the new tax will take effect in two weeks time (without Parliamentary approval) and banking on the approval of the parliament in the near future, he was asked what would happen if the new tax was not ratified. Well, the extra tax raised would have to be refunded. But you guessed it – not back to the public who have paid it in the first place – but to the oil companies who actually collect the increased tax, and pass the taxes collected onto government. What a rort! I can’t believe that a senior politician talks a load of lies / rubbish. Name supplied Glass House

Town Proud – Beerwah The businesses along Simpson Street and our Council are doing us (the people living in Glasshouse Country) proud. The effort that has gone into bringing our town ‘up to speed’ is fantastic. Walking along the new footpath is a pleasure and it shows in people’s faces, you see a lot of smiles. Now it is up to all of us to totally embrace it, to spend our dollars locally and to give the small businesses in town a chance to prosper. I read in today’s paper, $10 spent locally, would amount to over $20 million each week and over $1.2 billion per year for the local economy. Those are huge numbers which come from a single $10 note. Think about it!

Very grateful
On Friday, October 31, our ‘Peachester Postie’ Terry Newman retired from his position relative to keeping communication alive in this area. Our mobile phones sometimes are not receptive, our computers keep throwing words back at us, but our ‘Postie’ never fails, with efficiency and care, to deliver our bills from Telstra, Council etc., and happily, letters from friends who still like to write. We shall certainly miss him and wish him well in his new life style. We shall accept his successor and be grateful that we shall still have deliveries. Mavis Robb Peachester
NBN Co meeting in Maleny – October 16 At the October 16 NBN health information meeting in Maleny, issues were raised by both community reps and a Palmwoods farmer, on the effects of microwave radiation on bees and birds. European studies dating back to the 1980s show Electromagnetic Fields (EMF and EMR) effecting the homing behaviour of birds and bees. The growing worldwide loss of bees over the last eight years has concerned scientists. Chemicals, as well phone tower radiation, have been blamed. In 2003 Ferdinand Ruzicka (scientist and beekeeper) observed restlessness and unexpected swarms in his bees. Their strange behaviour included summer colonies collapsing and winter foraging ones dying of the cold. He noticed that mobile phone transmitters had been recently erected close to his hives. A beekeepers’ magazine survey he organised, found farmers with a phone tower 300 metres from their hives noted increased bee aggressiveness, more swarming and inexplicable colony collapse (Der Bienenvater, 2003). Scientists in Koblenz-Landua University (Germany) through to 2006 conducted experiments on the influence of EMR on bees using DECT cordless phones. They found
increased swarming, slower developmental bee skills and the return rate of exposed colonies much worse. Bees’ brains and antennas (and birds) contain magnetic material. Using this material (magnetite) they navigate the earth’s magnetic fields. When an artificial EM field is imposed on bees, the changes disrupt their navigational skills (Kirschvink, 1981/91). Microwave radiation has been shown to disrupt homing and navigational behaviour in bees and birds. What will NBN towers do to the honeybee industry? No Towers, cable is a better solution. How dumb do they think we are?
A government ad now appearing on our TV screens pushing for a lease of our public assets leaves me wondering how dumb some of us may be as I see very little difference between it and a sale. For one thing the length of the lease and secondly whoever takes out a lease will not only want their money back but also a profit. Therefore the cost of those services will need to rise in order for that to happen. Who pays? Those who can least afford it - you and me. As for my thoughts about those appearing on screen pushing this madness I’m afraid they are not printable. What I think needs to be done to counter this ad is to start a campaign for a vote
to take on a right of recall which would then give back to the people a final say on how the state should be seen. Those we elect, along with their overpaid and parrot educated advisers (who have very little idea of what it is like to live in the real world) would then find themselves as servants, not masters. To all of you who read this, all I ask is that you stop and think for a minute about what I have said, then endeavour to find the energy to do something about it. I for one don’t wish to live in a police state or to become a slave to a one world government. Name supplied Beerwah

School News Students on track
Contributed by Michelle McCormac Glenview State School Year 6 and 7 graduating students attended the ‘Students on Track’ day on Friday, October 24 of the Gold Coast V8 Supercars. Students were there for a whole day excursion, and it was ‘loud loud loud’ with ear plugs required. Students experienced Australia's fastest cars warming up on track and some were able to meet our very own Craig Lowndes. The day included an exclusive pit-lane visit, numerous exhibits, classic car displays, the adrenalin-pumping ‘burn out’ laps, and of course they sampled the V8 inspired, enormous fairy floss.
Beerwah State School refreshed
Two hundred volunteers descended on Beerwah State School for ‘The Project’ organised by the Suncoast Christian Church. The day brought together members of the church and school communities to freshen up buildings, gardens and playgrounds. Principal Janet Austen thanked everyone on behalf of the past, present and future students of Beerwah State School. It would not have been possible without generous donations from local businesses and the enthusiasm and hard work of so many great people.

Shoeboxes that teach
48 Simpson Street, Beerwah
Once again the Year 3 students of Glasshouse Country Christian College were responsible for promoting and collecting shoe boxes for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. The response was wonderful with students and their families taking time to choose something to love, something for school, something to wear and something to play with. There were also practical items like toothbrushes, carry bags and brushes included in the boxes. Year 3 will be tracking the boxes on their long journey to find out exactly where they end up and the places they needed to travel through to get there. Not only will students learn promotion, marketing and about Australia’s global communications, they’ll learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Hearty thanks to tuckshop helpers Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School is preparing to celebrate Tuckshop Day on Friday, November 7. Tuckshop Day recognises the great work of thousands of people across Queensland each and every school day. It also highlights the important role tuckshops play in school life. Providing nutritious food means families can have one less task to worry about at the start of their day and it helps students to concentrate and learn well in class. Landsborough's P&C President, Jo Brooks said, their tuckshop convenor, June, and her volunteers work incredibly hard to provide healthy food to children and they deserve a big

pat on the back for their efforts. “Tuckshop Day gives us a chance to say thank you to all the parents, grandparents and community members who help,” she said. “At Landsborough, we would like to extend a special thank you to Judith Dolan and Sean Wilson who volunteer their time every single tuckshop day.” Family members including grandparents as well as local residents are welcome to volunteer at Landsborough School's tuckshop. The old saying 'many hands make light work' is never truer than in school tuckshops. Volunteers don't have to spend a whole day at the tuckshop. Parents or members of the wider community can make a real contribution by volunteering for as little as an hour. Landsborough State School operates tuckshop two days per week - Wednesday and Friday. Helpers are always needed between the hours of 9.00am to 11.00am. Anyone interested in assisting in tuckshop for one or two hours per week can contact the school office on 5436 2777. It's a great opportunity to make new friends, have a laugh and a cuppa!

While the Landsborough Hotel has the look and feel of a traditional Country Pub, however when you drop in for a counter lunch the menu may just surprise you. Recently Brownie and I were heading up to Maleny for an event on a Saturday afternoon, so we thought we would call in for a relaxing lunch. The staff gave us a couple of recommendations of what we might consider trying and they were right on the money. Brownie who is partial to a lamb shank could not believe his eyes when what could only be described as a giant Chunky Lamb Shank Pot Pie was handed over to him. The pot pie was served in a huge bowl with a lovely covering of pastry and had mashed potatoes and pies on the side. I went for the more lady-like Nann Bread and Trio of Dips, followed by the King Prawn and Scallop Cocktail. The cocktail included three large Mooloolaba King Prawns, three Hervey Bay Half Shell Scallops, as well as avocado and salad. These are just three of the items on the lunch menu at the Landsborough Pub, if you haven’t been for lunch, why not organise to meet some family or friends on the back deck and check it out for yourself!

Operation Bounce Back
Out and About
The creation of new job opportunities on the Sunshine Coast is a significant issue and one that I have continued to focus on since being elected. The Federal Government has developed a number of initiatives to support the unemployed however these initiatives are only helpful if those who need them are aware of them. To address this I am launching a mini-campaign: Operation Bounce Back. My aim is for industry, media and the community to work together to ensure Sunshine Coast residents know what assistance there is available to help get into the workforce and to stay gainfully employed. I plan to use targeted social and mainstream media to promote the Federal Government initiatives and empower the Sunshine Coast community with information. And this is where you come in…. If you know of someone who is doing it tough and could benefit from information on Government employment initiatives I encourage you to share my Facebook posts, direct them to my website (www.malbrough.com.au), pass on any articles you see in the paper and spread the word. For many people the best Christmas present would be a job and with your support together we can make this a reality.
What a pleasure it was to attend the official sod turning for the new Interpretive and Archival Centre at Bankfoot House. The Friends of Bankfoot House do such an amazing job preserving the history of this heritage residence and are very excited to eventually be able to share this special place, steeped in history, with the public. Congratulations to President Ron Gillinder and the many tireless volunteers who have made this happen. Be sure to check out their website to keep up-to-date with what’s happening at Bankfoot House – www. bankfoothouse.org I was also happy to attend the official opening of the Glasshouse Country Festival in Beerwah. I was thrilled to be a Sponsor for this year’s event as I know how important this festival is in showcasing our region to our Coastal neighbours and also our friends from Brisbane and surrounds. Well done to the organisers of this great event. With only one Parliamentary session left for this year, I will be filling my time visiting as many schools in Glass House as possible to take part in their annual awards and graduation ceremonies. It is a big year for all of the schools with students from Year 6 and Year 7 bidding farewell to their primary school journey. Our Year 12 students are also nearing the end of their school career and I wish those graduating all the best for the future.

Qconnect bus route
Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback regarding the proposed cuts to the Maleny-Landsborough-Beerwah Qconnect bus route. The current proposal is looking to cut zones three and four from this route, meaning Beerwah residents will have to make use of the 649 rail bus or catch the train from Beerwah to Landsborough as a connection. I recently met with Transport representatives to discuss this matter and expect to have something from them in the near future. On advice from the Office of the Minister for Transport, I also look forward to talking to council about the issue shortly.
New look Beerwah town centre
The recently completed streetscape works in Simpson Street, Beerwah have certainly provided a breath of fresh air to the area and a muchneeded boost to local businesses. The State Government’s contribution to the beautification process coupled with the recent opening of Target and IGA is a major boost for the local area and will hopefully encourage more locals to shop local instead of driving to Maroochydore, Kawana or Caboolture. The Glasshouse Country Festival was also a major success and it was great to see everyone out and about participating in the various events. Well done to everyone who was involved in creating such a successful program of events.
Halls Creek/Beerwah East survey results Thank you again to everyone who filled out a survey form prepared by my office regarding the proposed Halls Creek and Beerwah East sites and possible inclusion in the South East Queensland Regional Plan. Hundreds of these forms were handed out at information booths I arranged at Beerwah and Caloundra Libraries that also included take-home information. We are currently collating all data and aim to release it shortly. Early results indicate, however, that the majority of survey respondents do have extensive knowledge about both sites. This is pleasing to see and confirms that the State Government’s community consultation process, in conjunction with other organisations, about informing and educating people about both sites is working. It’s a stark contrast to a survey completed by the University of the Sunshine Coast in July on the matter, where more than half of respondents stated they had never heard of either site.

Health Check The MF90 Day Challenge Landsborough Complete has been changing lives Chiropractic Care Five local mums, Thais, Mel, Kirsty, Virginia and Tamrah started the challenge together on September 10. With a little guidance from our Naturopath and some support from the Mentors the five ladies have lost over 15kg and 50cms in just four weeks!! That’s right! In just one month! The ladies love the variety of training schedules we have to offer, from training outside, inside, with their children in martial arts, early hours of the mornings, later hours at night and in specialised classes. They are only seven weeks into their challenge. That’s half way! And they are already seeing the great results. They would love to meet and train with some new challengies! So give us a give us a buzz on 0450 322 433, or visit the MF90 Day Challenge Facebook Page. Our next enrolment date is set for November 12. Don’t Miss Out! See you all on November 12.

Local Music Scene Music Today
Live & Local in November with Dr Micheal Whiticker
Micheal lives at Peachester and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner
The perfect creative space
I recently visited harp maker Geoff Welham at his home and workshop near Grafton to pick up a 31 string Morley harp made in the 1890s that he was bringing back to life for me. It was clearly a labour of love as he considered the particularities of the original design of the instrument and how he might retain some of its 125-year-old qualities. What a pleasure it was to visit him and spend some time in his studio. The room was full of instruments he had built, not only harps of all sizes but dulcimers and even two versions of a fascinating six stringed instrument called the fiedel, which is something like the 16th century viol. One of his fiedels has a curved neck and is played with a bow; the other has a flat neck and is played like a guitar. Being a guitarist I was keen to try it out. It has metal strings, some of which are double courses – similar to that found on a mandolin. The instrument has a similar sound, though not quite as high pitched as a mandolin. Needless to say I loved it and would have doodled for ages if time had allowed! While there I did at least take the time to look around his stunning house, which he had also built. Timber floors and large lead-light windows are a feature and I’ll leave you to imagine the handsome hard wood beams that stretched across the cathedral ceilings. It really was quite glorious to behold! The setting - surrounded by verandahs, sheds and chook pens, suggested a contented lifestyle and only 75 metres away is his piece de resistance – the harp-building workshop shed. It is actually a series of old sheds that have been cobbled together to create a complex big enough for Geoff to run his harp-making workshop weeks with half a dozen or more people each working on their own instruments. It was built in that rustic style found on many old country properties and I love the look of age and the practical qualities of this sort of space. Aah, a home in the country with a bit of bush to call your own! Perfect to inspire the creative side of life. Do have a musical month, Michael

Festival of Small Halls coming to Beerwah
By Sonia Clark The Festival of Small Halls is a series of intimate tours that feature folk and contemporary acoustic artists that are stand out performers at larger festivals throughout Australia - and sends them on the road to perform at small halls throughout regional communities. The idea originated from a similar successful concept held over at Prince Edward Island, The Mae Trio Canada where local communities banded together to host traditional and acoustic performers in small community halls throughout the Island. Developing on this notion, a number of Australia’s major folk or similarly themed festivals have gotten on board and the Festival of Small Halls commenced. Produced by the good people at the Woodford Folk Festival in partnership with other Australian festivals and regional partners, the tours allow smaller communities to connect with and welcome both Australian and International artists into their towns. Each night of the tour is hosted by volunteers from the local community and this summer for the first time, the tour will come to the Beerwah Community Hall. This leg of the festival tour is presented by the Woodford Folk Festival in partnership with the Mullum Music Festival and will feature the highly regarded Canadian folk, Americana and alt-Country singer Del Barber. Releasing his fourth album ‘Prairieography’ earlier this year, organisers are confident that Del’s voice will resonate well with local audiences. Growing up on the Canadian Prairies his songs reflect his country background and offer heartfelt and sincere observations of the world around him. Also on the tour are ‘The Mae Trio’, Australian female artists who have performed both nationally and internationally to great acclaim. All three members of the group compose their own songs and as winners of the 2013 Folk Alliance Youth Award – their music beautifully reflects both their various instrumental talents and stunning three part vocal harmonies. Both Del Barber and The Mae Trio have been chosen for the local tour because they play music of exceptional heart and quality that is sure to connect with the small towns with strong communities they visit. Tickets are on sale now at www.festivalofsmallhalls.com Beerwah Community Hall, Thursday, December 11. See you there! www.gcnews.com.au

Still life film The Maleny Film Society will screen ‘Still Life’ on Saturday, November 8, at the Maleny Community Centre in Maple Street, Maleny. Directed by Umberto Paolini, ‘Still Life’ has a natural and unforced rhythm as it flows through the loneliness suffered by life’s choices and events, the disconnect of human lives, the poignancy of death and forgiveness through mourning. Mr May’s (Eddie Marsan) job with the London Council is to search for something in the past of the forgotten, uncared for souls who have died alone within his borough. Suddenly retrenched from his job, Mr May pours all his effort into his last client, an alcoholic man who dies alone in a flat just around the corner from his own. Doors open at 6.00pm for a 7.15pm screening, dinner catered by Spaghetti Junction with tea, coffee and slices also available.
Breast cancer fundraiser at Glasshouse Tavern

The show is free – they pass the hat around for donations for breast cancer research at the end, but if you’d like to book for a two-course dinner and show package, it’s only $30.00 with $5.00 going straight the Breast Cancer Foundation. Bookings for dinner are essential – contact the Tavern on 5493 0933.

SAY NO TO HALLS CREEK
(This notice is authorised by the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN))
Your State Member of Parliament is asking the community to let them know how you feel about the Halls Creek area being included in the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA (Identified Growth Area). This is your chance to let them know that you do not want this to happen, by following the steps below: 1. Addressing the following letter to either Mr Powell, PO Box 727, Maleny, or Mr McArdle, PO Box 3998, Caloundra 2. Tick the issue(s) as reason(s) why, and/or add any other concerns you may have 3. Sign and date the letter including your address, put in an envelope addressed to Mr Powell or Mr McArdle 4. Mail it yourself or drop it (no stamp required) into the box available at Glasshouse Country News, Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains; Beerburrum Service Centre, Beerburrum; Morris House, Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough; or Kwerky Cafe, Simpson Street, Beerwah Dear Mr._________________________________________ (Member of Parliament) I would like to let you know that I am NOT in favour of Halls Creek being included in the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA (Identified Growth Area), because: I do not want to see the inter urban break, the forestry and agricultural land between the Moreton Bay urban border and the urban boundary of the Sunshine Coast, to get any smaller, as it is now a distinct open green space clearly separating urban areas at either end. I want to remove the added threat to the Pumicestone Passage, a unique and important waterway for many reasons, from more degradation caused by further urban development on its shores. The overall health of the region’s environment and its biodiversity would suffer even more if Halls Creek were developed. I want to lessen the negative economic impacts which the Halls Creek development and its associated retail precincts would have on the Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, and Landsborough townships. I want to see the previous wishes over the past 15 years of the community and the Council on Halls Creek, to remove Halls Creek from the SEQ Regional Plan as an IGA, respected. Other ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________ As our local member, please listen to your constituents who are saying “NO to Halls Creek IGA”. First Home Buyers: Debt can be a positive Potential first home buyers can put themselves on the front foot in their endeavours to secure a home loan by having some form of positive exposure to credit or debt sooner rather than later. However, Teresa Harrison from Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers stresses that people would be wiser to avoid credit or debt if there is any likelihood they are unlikely to be able to manage the responsibility, thereby ruining any chance of securing a home loan in the near future. “Responsible management of debt can be viewed as a positive in this www.gcnews.com.au
day of bank credit scoring, but it obviously needs to be handled very carefully,” said Teresa. “Debt isn’t unlike fire. Managed correctly and carefully, it can be incredibly useful, but in the wrong hands there’s a good chance you could get burnt.” Many years ago, it was suggested that it was advantageous for young people to have a personal or car loan, or a credit card, and pay it off to show that you were good with money. This was in the days when you used to deal with the local branch manager, who knew you, and who was looking for a track record of debt repayment.
That changed somewhat in the late 1980s when banks moved to centralised decision making, where bank personnel never met the borrower. Just because you had no defaults because you’d never borrowed money wasn’t a problem, the main priority was that there were no defaults. However, the move to automated credit scoring by computer programs in recent years now means the lack of a previous credit facility can count against you, because there is no good track record of repaying debt. “Computer programs are essentially doing what the humans used to do
– making a value judgment on your past performance and assessing your character,” Teresa said. So a blank space on the fields relating to previous credit conduct can be perceived as a negative. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Plant of the month
with Jade King
Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening
Preserving the produce Summer weather has definitely come early with record high temperatures, yet very little rain has accompanied the spectacular electrical storms of an evening. Most of our vegetables have been affected to some extent, with a few being totally fried, and others have just reduced their production overall. Despite this, I still have an abundance of produce and am busily bottling up preserves and conserves to have for great end-of-year thank you gifts and Christmas packages. There is nothing quite like a selection of home-made jams, pickles and chutneys in a nice basket as a gift. In abundance now, I have beetroot, tomatoes, beans, onion, cucumber, ginger and some late season strawberries. With all of this produce I have so far made loads of strawberry jam, green tomato pickles and mulberry jam. Still to come are bottles of pickled beetroot, bread and butter cucumber, sweet tomato chutney and ginger marmalade! The beauty of green tomato pickles is that, well, the tomatoes are picked green … obviously! This is a bonus especially when you are losing the grub battle, which I am at a rapid pace. I was a little late putting the exclusion bags on the trusses of tomatoes, which resulted in me providing a lovely protective environment for the very hungry caterpillars already hidden within the tomatoes. Lesson here, cover your tomatoes as soon as they set fruit. Green tomato pickles also uses up some of my mass of beans and the enormous onions growing. I was blessed to have my mother-in-law pass on her traditional green tomato pickle recipe. To find Jade's recipe head to page 45 at the end of the classifieds.
Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others.
Wallum Boronia
Boronia falcifolia If you have been fortunate enough to have participated in one of the Glasshouse Festival walks through the wallum area at Beerwah, you would no doubt have seen the lovely pink Boronia. We tend to think of Boronia as being a West Australian flower but a number of species are found in heath and wet wallum areas across the Sunshine Coast and northern New South Wales. Boronia falcifolia is a branching shrub which rarely reaches a height of more than one metre. The bright pink, wax like flowers consist of four petals, while the leaves are needle-like in appearance. Boronia and other heath plants were once common along the coastal strip from Noosa to Caloundra, but today this precious natural resource has mainly given way to development. Across the Sunshine Coast these plants are only found in a few protected areas. The GMAN nursery does not grow Boronia.

Thelie Hobbs Suncoast Church Hinterland Recently ‘Gone with the Wind’ was on TV. It’s always been a favourite and as I hadn’t watched it in a while, I settled myself in for what I know is a long movie. Around the two hour mark we get to the scene where Scarlett, having been deserted by Rhett, stands on top of the hill with Atlanta burning in the background. After collapsing to the ground, she slowly pulls herself up again and with her fist held high, declares, “as God is my witness, I will never be hungry again.” Most of us can identify with Scarlett: Sometimes life just gets so complicated, our best laid plans go up in flames, people walk away, and dreams lay abandoned. It surely does looks like the end...but then the word ‘Intermission’ flashes across the screen. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

NOVEMBER 5 2014
The pages of the Bible are full of life stories of men and women who came to a point in their lives where they thought life was over, only later to discover it was just an intermission. Elijah hid in a cave thinking his ministry was over; Moses herded sheep in the desert believing his dream to rescue the Hebrews was dashed; Jonah camped out under a shade plant and waited to die. These men all thought it was the end, but it was only an intermission. God wasn’t finished with the story of their lives quite yet, and He’s not finished with yours, or mine either. Sometimes when we feel like there is no hope, or we find ourselves asking, where shall I go? What shall I do?...Is this the end?! I’m reminded that God never sees a situation as hopeless and the word ‘Intermission’ flashes across my heart. When things look like the end, be encouraged to just sit down a moment, take a deep breath, stretch and refocus...maybe it's just an intermission. Jeremiah 29:11 reads, ‘For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. It's not the end! Your story is not over yet!

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Contributed by Jenny Kelly The sun is starting to get some sting in it and the really hot weather can’t be too far away. We had 58 girls come out to play a Single Stableford for trophies generously donated by Sue Williamson and Barb Whitfield. It was great to see our wounded warriors, Sue and Barb at the clubhouse to present their trophies despite not being able to play themselves. The winner of Division 1, with a total of 40 points was Lyn Wroe. Lyn was followed by Debs Rutherford who came in with 36 points. Winner of Division 2 with the best score of the day was Josie Thistlethwaite with a magnificent 42 points. Josie has been a member of Beerwah Golf Club for over 40 years and it is wonderful to see her coming in with such great scores. Josie was followed by runner up Janelle Balfe who
Sue, Lyn, Josie and Barb
came in with 37 points. Nearest to the Pins went to Caroline Schwarer on 2, Fay Raven on 5 and Kaye Jansen on both 16 and Div 1 on the 18th. Heather Coyle took out Div 2 on the 18th. The random birdie was the 16th with 2 winners, Meg Ferran and Di Flint. The ball rundown went to 32 points. We are holding one of our fun days next week when the girls invite the fellas along for a game of Tiger Stableford. Rather than add the two scores together, partners must multiple their two scores, which can result in lots of points, or none at all if someone washes out. I can see the divorce lawyers circling. Saturday saw 30 ladies on the course to play for trophies generously donated by one of Beerwah’s best eateries Pasta D’Vine. The well deserving winner was Hollie Sinclair who shot a terrific 73 off the stick, to come in with 71 Nett. Hollie will be able to choose from the Captain Lea with runner up Di great range of goodies at Pasta D’Vine. Runner up Di Smith will also be able to taste the delights Sue and Oscar’s café after coming in with a 75 Nett. The ball rundown went to 80 Nett.
Swim Club Member takes to the open water
Contributed by Jodie Diefenbach Maleny Swimming Club member Lochlan Higgins, has participated in his first open water swim at Lake Kawana. Lochlan competed in the 15-year-old five kilometre open water meet against 18 other competitors. This was Lochlan’s first attempt at long distance swimming, but this did not reflect in his final result, with Lochlan achieving a time of 1:07:21.96 and a ranking of 15th place. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a new venture for Lochlan.

Please make sure you pay your season fees as soon as possible. A reminder also, that you need to arrive prior to match starting time. If you have any queries please contact Katya. All catch-up matches can be played at Glasshouse State School courts on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons. Players need to learn how to score and be a ball-boy for your own match, and being a part of a team. There is only one more match left before the semi’s, so try and get those catchup matches played and scores in as soon as possible. The courts at the Glasshouse Sports Club are available for hire by contacting the Club.

Week beginning 05/11/14 CANCER June 22 – July 22 There is a mighty Mars / Pluto conjunction in Capricorn in your commitment sector. This means a pushy partner may press a confrontation or a dictatorial overthrow of your rights! You hope it will be just a war of words, rather than a bone crunching fist fight. All of it belongs to an old grievance or grudge. LEO July 23 – August 22 This week reveals two sides of the situation, giving you something to ponder upon. So the full Moon by Friday may bring an urgent emotional matter between work and home that puts you right in the middle of it all. You will have to navigate through rigid personalities to find peace. Difficult memories arise. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The full Moon in Taurus makes a good aspect to your sign. You usually make decisions from an analytical perspective, but your bottom line affairs now come through your subtle intuitive means. With the emphasis in your communication sector, the week sees many successful meetings and conferences now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 A power house of planets clears the residue of past problems and you feel as if you want to pack your car with what you can carry and drive away from the scene! As the full Moon hits your financial area it brings recent money problems up for immediate attention. Financial situations become clearer.
