s you have already seen the front cover, you can probably guess where I spent Thursday night .. yep I was chair dancing and singing out loud to Herman’s Hermits at the Beerwah RSL. I think that being only in my mid 40s, I might have been one of the youngest audience members, but be that as it may – I have to admit I did know most of the words to their songs.

When I was a teenager I went on a road trip with my mum and a few friends and in those days you took cassettes to play in the car, as the trip was rather

spontaneous, my mum only had two cassettes in the glove box.

So it was a medley of Johnny Cash and Hermans Hermits for the entire journey. Not surprisingly through the torture (remember I was a teenager at the time and anything that wasn’t playing on a young radio station was considered torture) of having to listen to them I inadvertently became a fan.

And I have to say all these years on, not only was the music great, but the band members are real showman. You could see that they still loved performing and sharing their songs with the crowd – cheers to the Beerwah RSL for bringing the Hermits to Beerwah!

Telling their stories Our region’s rich history is once again being put under the spotlight in a project to tell the stories of the soldiers who set up home in Beerburrum as part of a soldier settlement in World War 1.

“Hopefully by letting people know what we are doing, we can track down the descendants of these settlers, and find out their stories."

Paul said he was hoping locals would be able to contribute information in the form of letters, narratives, photos, family oral tradition or other memorabilia such as medals.

Project manager Paul Sutton is calling on members of the local community to contribute to the project which aims to identify around 660 soldiers who settled in Beerburrum as part of the soldier settlement, established in 1916 by the Australian government to provide land to repatriated servicemen.

“Our aim is to create a permanent historical record of these settlers in time for the centenary of the establishment of the Settlement in 2016, and we are seeking any records that people might have that relates to those who had a connection with the settlement between 19161930,” Paul said.

The history of the settlement is part of the Adopt a Digger project, a voluntary community project initiated by historian and author Chrissy Fletcher, which aims to create a complete online database of the names and military histories of around 2,000 Sunshine Coast soldiers and nurses who served in World War 1.

“Paul has been able to create a list of the names of the soldiers who were part of the settlement, which has been a major project in itself, so now, with the help of the community, we want to establish a profile for each of them," Chrissy said.

“I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to achieve, and fortunately, thanks to the expertise of my colleague Simo Calandra, and the excellent response and support from our stallholders, we’re well on the way,” Tracey said.

Tracey, the self confessed ‘heart’ of the market, and Simo, the ‘brains trust’ of the dynamic duo have managed to grow the monthly event into a warm and welcoming space that is drawing praise and most importantly, repeat customers.

“Our aim is to build a sustainable market in order to support its vision, which is to showcase our local creative talent,” Tracey said.

“We consider that the market space belongs to everyone, so it’s important that we are listening to what the local community is saying.”

To this end, Tracey and Simo have a number of exciting new elements in the planning, including a Show N Shine event for the next market day, on Sunday, September 9.

Also on the drawing board are plans for a Farmers Market, offering a range of local produce to complement an already extensive range of more than 45 stalls which feature locally made art and craft, homemade food, fresh flowers, Reiki, massage, iridology and readings, and plants.

Blossoming art trail in Glasshouse Country It seems the creative prowess of the Glasshouse community just continues to grow and grow!

Next weekend, local artist Chris Blake will open his new home gallery/studio to exhibit his works, a collection of at least 50 paintings.

Chris, a master pastellist, first picked up a paintbrush more than 30 years ago. Since then he has developed into a self described ‘traditional artist with a contemporary twist’. He’s also a well respected teacher, and offers weekly classes in pastels, oils and drawing.

Chris says he draws his inspiration from strong colours and tonal values, and something that tells a story; the result is clearly evident in his vibrant works.

Walk of hope It’s a well known fact that in northern Nigeria, Christians have to walk to get water, so on September 15, locals are being encouraged to do some walking of their own in an effort to raise funds as part of the ‘Walk to Water’ walkathon.

According to local walk coordinator, Natalie Ukkola, the walkathon aims to highlight the fact that people in disadvantaged countries can’t just turn on a tap, something many of us take for granted.

“In some of these villages, families, often mothers and children, are forced to walk long distances every day to collect water, and they are often mistreated along the way,” Natalie said.

“The funds raised from the walkathon will go towards building bores for those communities

where water is not available.”

The cost to sink a bore, she said, is around $13,000.

Natalie said the organisation running the event, Open Doors, a not-for-profit organisation established in 1955 which responds to the plight of persecuted Christians around the world, go into villages like these and sink permanent, reliable bores and then teach the communities how to maintain them.

‘Walk to Water’ will kick off at 8.00am at the Church on the Rise, Beerwah and head towards the lake at the Beerwah Community Hall as part of a one kilometre circuit. Participants are encouraged to do as many laps of the circuit as they can in two and a half hours.

Walkers must register to participate in the event.

150th Anniversary Celebrations brew Locals recently brewed up a storm of ideas to celebrate Mooloolah turning 150 in 2013.

Community development worker, Natasha Odgers, said locals came up with lots of ideas based on their connection to the area.

“Ideas to celebrate Mooloolah highlighted local’s value for the community, environment, history and the intangible, tranquil destination Mooloolah is,” she said.

“A calendar of events held throughout the year and a main community day and night is planned for later in 2013. Some of the things planned include displaying and archiving images and stories of the last 150 years, a dance in the hall and a big community day with fun activities,” Natasha said.

There will be a community session on September 12 for people to start getting into the nuts and bolts of making this celebration a hit.

“We encourage as many people as possible to take part in making these celebrations a great success. People can be involved in many ways, from helping to organise events and volunteering during events, to sharing stories and more,” Natasha said.

Anyone who has an interest in Mooloolah, local history, creativity or organising fun events is urged to come along to a town get-together at 6.00pm, Wednesday, September 12 at the Mooloolah Public Hall.

Unsung Heroes

Kaz and Rich Worthing-Thomson The Glasshouse Country RSL sub branch might only be small in size, but the strength of the community spirit supporting it makes it mighty. Just ask Kaz Worthing-Thomson. The Glasshouse Mountains local has been volunteering at the sub branch for the past two years and has seen first-hand just how effective many hands can be.

Kaz, together with her husband Rich, dedicates many hours a week to helping out at the sub branch, from coordinating the kitchen and raffle rosters, to cooking, ordering and training other volunteers, and sitting on the sub branch committee, as well as being a member of the sub branch Citizens Auxiliary.

When the well-known couple sold their Beerwah business, Beerwah Books N Bits, in October 2010, it was only a matter of time before Kaz’s leisurely retirement was interrupted by a call to lend a hand down at the club. Having previously owned take-away businesses, Kaz’s cooking skills were immediately put to good use, and now, two years on, she has revamped the menu and breathed new life into the club’s Friday night sessions.

On average, between them Kaz and Rich clock up an easy 70 hours a month volunteering at the sub branch. And both agree it’s a fairly

conservative figure, not that they are counting though. When it comes to their local club, the pair agrees volunteers are what keeps the doors open. In total, Kaz estimates there are around 50 locals who regularly give up their free time to lend a hand, from selling raffle tickets to working behind the bar, to helping out in the kitchen, but more are always needed.

“The number fluctuates, because at any given time someone might be away on holidays, or not be available, so we are always looking for more volunteers to come and lend a hand,” Kaz said.

She said volunteers don’t have to be members of the club, although at only $10.00 for a lifetime membership, it’s a very small investment in the local community.

Not only does the club play an important part in supporting our veteran community, by offering meals on a Friday night and putting on events, it’s also a way to give back to the broader community,” Kaz said.

“It offers such a warm, welcoming atmosphere, and I really enjoy coming here, as much as I enjoy helping out.”

“I do it because I enjoy it; I love helping out, to organise, and also the social aspect of it.

“We all work as part of a team and help each other out, and we get a lot of praise from the community, so it’s great to be part of that,” she said.

Ever since then, Chloe has been on a mission to raise funds and awareness about wildlife, in particular for the Wildlife Hospital at Australia Zoo.

Her fundraising initiatives include an annual camp out in the family’s back yard, movie nights, readathons, a charity motorbike ride and sausage sizzles, and despite her latest achievement being named a finalist in the Queensland Pride of Australia awards, her passion is showing no signs of abating.

She was named the Wildlife Warrior of the Year 2010, and received national exposure after Channel Nine heard about her, and built a possum rehabilitation enclosure in her backyard as part of their television show, Random Acts of Kindness.

Earlier this year, Chloe sent off a handwritten letter to every school across the country in an effort to encourage them to support her fundraising efforts through activities such as a Khaki Day and the Wildlife Warriors readathon.

The 41st Charity Sports Day, held on Saturday, August 25, was one of the best ever held. The weather was gloriously fine and calm with the result that the Glasshouse Country community turned out in record-breaking numbers to give the day a wonderful impetus.

All the events were well supported, with the new ‘Show and Shine’ in particular giving promise of a bright future.

Multiple entries in the ring events gave a great sight of polished performances from both horses and riders.

Courtney Tinknell, with her horse Nikki Noodle, was judged Champion jumper, winning the Sandale Saddlery rug and also the Ray Milburn Memorial Trophy. Courtney has been a wonderful supporter of the Charity Sports Day. She started riding in the Under 6 events and, now in Courtney Tinknell with her horse, Nikki high school, is showing great Noodle, with the Sandale Saddlery rug promise as an equestrienne.

The cake stall, produce stall, food and drink and coffee stalls etc, were well patronised. Plus the entertainment from the Morris Dancers, the freestyle motocross display, together with the various animal displays really captured the crowd’s attention.

The first of the major raffle draws was won by Sharon Lee of Landsborough who selected the garden cart full of goodies; the second draw winner was Debbie Slater of Beerwah who chose the bicycle and third prize went to Leanne Brooks of Pelican Waters who received the gym voucher from Fitness Matters. More results will appear in future editions of Glasshouse Country News.

The Committee wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported the day.

New face at Sports Club This week saw a new face at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club with Jay Globits taking on the role of General Manager.

Jay has 12 years’ experience in general manager roles from a range of clubs with his most recent role being at Mooloolaba Bowls Club.

When he wasn’t managing the club, he was representing them playing bowls. But before you start to think he must be an older bloke, he is only 32 and has represented Australia at world level competition so he is definitely someone who likes to achieve.

Club President, Ken Fullerton was keen to welcome Jay to the job and is confident that Jay is the right person to take the club to its next stage of development.

“He’s young and enthusiastic but comes with great experience and knowledge of the hospitality industry which is great for the club’s future,” Ken said.

Back to school for prep dads

On Tuesday, August 28, Prep children at Glasshouse Country Christian College went to school twice in one day! After going home at 3.00pm they came back at 6.30pm and brought their dads and grandads along for the special Prep Fathers’ Night.

The Preppies were very excited to show their dads and grandads what they had been learning and to spend some special time with them. Some dads were taken straight to the interactive whiteboards, others were introduced to iPads while others sat on the floor playing with blocks and toys.

Tiahna Davies and her dad Sam with their plaque The students had painted ‘I love U Dad’ plaques and the male guests were asked to bring their hammers along to complete the special project. Together, they hammered in nails to form a pattern and then began weaving. Prep Green teacher Lesley-ann Rosenberg was amazed at the stunning results.

“I thought they would just have a bit of fun with it but the dads really put their hearts into the project and took the time to make perfectly weaved patterns,” she said.

Over in the Prep Maroon classroom the dads and grandads were elbow deep in play dough and having a wonderful time. In Prep White the dads sung along to Letterland, Maths and Scripture songs with everyone joining in with all the actions.

Champions read at Landsborough

Landsborough State School has just celebrated Book Week with many funfilled activities based around the theme for 2012 of ‘Champions Read’. Local ‘champions’ visited the school to read their favourite picture book to classes.

The champions included Sergeant Michael Downs the local police officer, Nicola the librarian, Jason the podiatrist, Merv the ambulance officer, Larry the gardener and Vicky ‘The Funny Lady’. All of these people explained to students how important reading is in their everyday jobs.

The week included a dress-up day where students and teachers came dressed as their favourite champion.

There certainly were some creative and Ambulance officer Merv reads colourful costumes. Each class had to the students a lucky draw with the prize being a book shop voucher. Another highlight was when well-known children's author, Kyle Mewburn, came and spoke to students. He inspired everyone with his fantastic imagination and passion for writing. Kyle explained the process he takes to write a book and showed the children some of his collection, from his very first book, ‘Hoppleplop’, to his latest release, ‘Blue Gnu’.

KG a treat for Ausfunk students Ausfunk Beerwah students combined with six other Ausfunk dance studios for an exclusive workshop with pop sensation KG recently. KG is on tour promoting his hit single 'So Dangerous'. He has contributed to Timomatic, Brian McFadden and Jessica Mouboy as a backup dancer and singer.

“KG represents a positive force in the hip hop industry teaching kids to make positive choices in music," said Ausfunk director, Hayley Green.

Beerwah State School held two sessions of the World of Maths Roadshow in the school hall on August 14.

It was an ideal opportunity for students to see how maths is applied to some real life situations. One hundred and twenty of our students from Years 4 - 7 participated in the hour and a half activities.

Students worked in groups and were engaged in hands-on activities which enhanced their problem solving skills.

Students demonstrated excellent discussion and communication within their groups.

Students are looking forward to the next challenge in maths this month.

Council News Don’t fur-get to renew your pet registration this September Pet owners will soon receive their annual Sunshine Coast Council animal registration renewal notices in the mail reminding them of the September 30 due date. The annual registration period for cats and dogs commences on October 1 each year and extends to September 30 the following year.

Registration is free for pets under six months old and discounts apply for pensioners and for microchipped and de-sexed pets.

There are several convenient payment methods

and options available including online payments, over the phone, via Australia Post or at the closest Customer Contact Office.

Have your details or your pet’s details changed, or do you no longer own your pet? Pet owners can also notify council of any changes to their pets’ information online including changes to: pensioner details, desexing, microchipping, registration cancellations and address for your animal.

Community to guide Flexilink future Sunshine Coast Council is calling on residents to have a say on the Flexilink trial service currently operating between Beerwah and Peachester.

Feedback from residents will help shape the future of the Beerwah-Peachester Flexilink service, which is funded by council’s Public Transport Levy.

Council will send surveys to residents along this route in early September. Everyone who returns the survey before September 21 has the chance to win a $200.00 Visa gift card.

Transport Strategy Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said he wanted the community to know these surveys are critical and can be pivotal in determining passenger needs and avenues for any possible improvements to the Flexilink routes and services in the future.

facilities and services across the Sunshine Coast,” Cr Baberowski said.

“Feedback from passengers along the Flexilink routes is essential in helping to ascertain whether the service meets passenger needs, and if changes were made in the future, what changes would best suit the community.

“This is about the community using their direct experience to transform the future direction of these services, so the most suitable and sustainable transport options can be explored and offered to our residents.”

Feedback is also invited for Flexilink trial services between Kenilworth and Mapleton, and Conondale, Witta and Maleny.

Surveys will be sent to residents along the three Flexilink routes this month and must be submitted to council no later than September 21. Surveys can also be completed online via the ‘have your say’ section on council’s website.

Council introduced new Flexilink trial services across the Sunshine Coast region two years ago but due to low patronage, four of these trials ceased on June 30, 2011. Four Flexilink services remain operating.

Analysis of the data will be discussed with the Queensland Government for future consideration.

Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Thursday, September 6 Contributed by Kerry Gillam Do you know how much the community has benefited from the Club’s accomplishments? For this, we are very proud.

We have run Speech Craft Courses to prepare Year 7 students for their transition to high school; these being Glasshouse State School, Eudlo State School, Glenview State School, Beerwah State School, Mooloolah State School and Montville State School.

On Wednesday, September 5 another group of Year 7’s from Glenview will be graduating.

Also for the last three years, Speech Craft Courses have been run at the Green Army, giving them the confidence to venture out into the workforce.

A few years ago, another Speech Craft Course was run for people who work during the day.

We have also had a kitchenette installed in the hall of the Church on the Rise, Beerwah, which is now enjoyed for use by ourselves and other groups in the area.

We have been part of the area for over 10 years and we are happy to have achieved all this for others.

Why not come along to a meeting? Having guests attend adds to the success and vibrancy of the Club. You will be welcomed and also, we are sure, you will have a great time.

After many months of wet weather, the mould and mildew outside our home was out of control.

Something had to be done.

It was not a job us oldies could tackle. By chance we found Todd – The House and Driveway Washer – who came to our rescue.

He arrived on time, was very helpful and gave us a good quote.

It was a refreshing change after another company chose to ignore us.

Nothing was too much trouble for him – he did an amazing job.

We’ve since referred him to our neighbours who are equally happy with his professionalism and attention to detail.

Primary school children across the country have already sent thousands of letters of support to our Olympic athletes, and with the Paralympic Games now featuring, students have the opportunity to write to a Paralympian to boost their spirits as they strive for gold in London.

Charity Sports thanks Contributed by Bruce Page, Committee Chairman With the weather smiling this year, the 2012 Beerwah Charity Sports was a very successful day, with lots of enthusiasm for the event itself and for the cause. As in previous years, all proceeds from the day will go to Cancer Council Queensland.

On behalf of the Charity Sports Committee, I would like to thank all the organisations and individuals who helped make the annual sports day such a success. And of course a day like this would not be possible without the local business community, who continue their generous support year after year.

This reminds us what a vital role local businesses play in a community – without them it would be

hard to run events like the Charity Sports, which are so important in keeping community spirit alive.

The Committee have tried over the years to make the Charity Sports a fun day for all concerned, while raising much-needed funds for cancer research. It was heartening to see such a good crowd this year, a great roll-up of horses in the ring events, and all other activities so well supported. A special thanks to Cameron and Aaron who donated their time and expertise, and thrilled the crowd with their freestyle motocross display.

We expect this year’s Charity Sports to be very successful financially, and look forward to letting everyone know the fund-raising total when details are finalised.

Dads Read at local libraries Families are invited to be part of the free, fun Dads Read celebrations during September at Sunshine Coast libraries across the region.

There are special activities for babes to eighteen months, littlies 12 months to 3 years and story telling sessions with legend dads for kids to 5 years. Public Holiday changes

Some of you may have heard the news that the Newman Government has legislated to change the Labour Day public holiday to the first Monday in October from 2013. This is designed to break up the concentration of public holidays in the April-May period, while also providing a break for workers in the second half of the year. The decision was made to keep the Queen’s Birthday public holiday consistent with all other states and territories with the exception of Western Australia. A review of the 2011 amendment to the Holiday Act 1983 showed strong community support to move Labour Day as opposed to the Queen’s Birthday public holiday. We do still have the extra one this year so don’t forget that Monday, October 1 is a holiday!

Out and About

Well done to everyone involved with organising the annual Beerwah Charity Sports Day last weekend. I took a few of my kids again this year and they had a blast. Events like these demonstrate what a close knit community we have and I thank those locals who came along on the day and donated money from their own pockets.

Electricity Price Rises

Some AGL customers have contacted my office recently regarding price rises on their electricity account. I have been advised by the office of the Minister for Energy and Water Supply that current price rises are a direct result of the introduction of the Carbon Tax. The Carbon Tax is the tax on energy production and each of these electricity retailers utilise different forms of energy production and unfortunately it is set to increase the price of electricity for all Queenslanders. The price increase should only be reflective of the price increase of the Carbon Tax. What we need to bear in mind is that some forms of electricity generation cost more than others due to the way it impacts on carbon emissions. To compare prices and deals with electricity providers, check the following website www.qca.org.au/ electricity-retail/comparator. Legislation will also be in effect later this year to allow customers to change between providers without paying an exit fee.

Speeding along Roberts Road, Beerwah

I have been contacted by some locals who are upset about people speeding and tailgating during school zone hours along Roberts Road, Beerwah. I have suggested they contact the local police to request more patrols of the area.

Two major schools are situated along this road; Glasshouse Country Christian College and Beerwah State High School. Woodgrove Estate and a childcare centre are also situated off this busy road. It’s important to remember that all cars must travel at 40km/h in school zones from 7.00am - 9.00am and 2.00pm - 4.00pm on school days.

These hours became standardised for all school zones in the south-east earlier this year. It’s also important to always adhere to the signs, regardless if a crossing supervisor is present. These speed limits are in place for a reason, it’s better to be patient for the short stretch rather than be part of an accident that you may regret for the rest of your life. Well done to those of you who do the right thing and if anyone else has concerns about this please contact my office.

Feedback on Intersection

Last week, as reported in Glasshouse Country News, I put the call out for residents to contact my office regarding concerns over the intersection out the front of Beerwah Primary School - Old Gympie Road/Peachester Road.

Many residents are worried there is no safe place for school children to cross along this busy stretch.

I’m urging all parents and locals who are concerned about this area to contact my office so we can get something done. A petition needs to be started, which I can then lodge in Parliament. Never underestimate the power of a community rallying together.

Have you noticed some additional kilograms crept on during winter?

The additional weight could be causing more problems than how you look in swimwear - it could be harming your health.

Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Susan O’Dwyer said extra tummy fat may indicate a greater risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

She said an easy way to assess your risk is to grab a tape measure and measure your waist.

“Waist measurements irrespective of height and weight are a reliable indication of your risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes.”

For men a waist measurement more than 94cm can indicate an increased risk of chronic diseases; if more than 102cm, the risk is greatly increased.

For women a waist measurement more than 80cm can indicate an increased risk of chronic diseases; if more than 88cm, the risk is greatly increased.

Chronic diseases associated with an increased waist measurement include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and some types of cancer. Eating a good diet is the first step in reversing winter weight gain, however increasing your activity levels also plays an important part.

The art of improvisation: Part 3 As a final in this short series about improvisation I’d like to discuss how one learns to improvise. Now this assumes that as a musician you have had a balanced musical education – i.e. learnt how to read music, played in a school orchestra and big band, played with some friends in a pop, jazz or blues band and sat around the table playing Irish tunes or Macedonian dance music. Whether this is your story or not, if you’d to like develop a feel for improvising (in any style) then at some point you just have to take the risk and dive in. The biggest thing to take on board with improvising is that there are no mistakes - anything is possible, and you only get ‘good’ at it by doing it!

I think there are three approaches one can take in learning how to improvise.

Jazz players learn their scales - not just the standard major and minor scales and arpeggios, but all of the modes as well. And they learn what chord progressions they can use the various scales with. It is highly technical and because of the theory involved, intellectually very stimulating. A similar approach is used in ‘classical improvisation’ where one might improvise in the style of say Bach or Mozart.

More popular musicians, including those who play folk and rock, tend to base their improvisations on a song’s melodic line. At its most basic a solo (which is what a musician improvises) is simply an instrumental version of the song’s ‘tune’, but at its best it subtly develops the melodic line with inflection, injects harmonic interest and shows the musicality of the instrumentalist.

A third method, and I am proposing something here which appeals to free improvisers because it is more abstract, requires us to consider a definition of improvisation which is truer to its use in other art forms than it is to music. That is ‘the art of reacting in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one’s immediate environment and inner feeling’ (wikipedia).

In practical terms your improvisation is not accompanied, or at least it might not appear to be, and you are not working with a chord progression or ostinato (musical riff). Initially you might produce just one sound, then elaborate it in the most subtle ways until you feel you have fully explored the potential of that one sound. Silence, or ‘making no sound’ becomes integral to your performance, as does the environment or ambience in which you are performing. You then add a second sound or pitch to your first and a huge range of possibilities appears to open up.

It is improvisation or music making in its purest form, and, to me at least, seems to be very organic, even earthy. Do have a creative musical month.

University quickly warms to ‘Chill out Tuesday’

Tuesdays have become the new groove days at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Some of the region’s top young musicians have been given the chance to showcase their talents to appreciative lunch-time audiences on campus as part of USC’s ‘Chill out Tuesday’ series.

The weekly performances have been organised by USC’s Student Services with assistance from Arts student and booking agent Rosalie Maguire.

Ms Maguire said a growing number of students and staff were taking time out to enjoy the quality entertainment, which has so far included Ziggy Alberts and Mitch Barrington.

“There is so much musical talent here on the Sunshine Coast and within the University, so this is a great opportunity for them to get some exposure,” she said.

“It has created a lovely atmosphere on campus. We’re seeing a decent-sized crowd sitting in the sun enjoying the music.”

Hermits rocked Beerwah Last Thursday night the Herman's Hermits show filled the RSL to capacity with over 200 people seated for the show, and while the crowd might have been seated there was plenty of seat dancing, swaying and singing coming from the audience.

Last Saturday night the Friends of Bankfoot House held a wine and cheese evening, with the cheese supplied by Maleny Cheeses and the wines by Cloveley Estate. The funds raised will go to the Cancer Council. The verandah was the perfect setting for the evening although when the temperature started to plummet below 10 degrees the front room with the pianola became very popular!

Sharing your garden!

Gardening is often about sharing plants, seeds and cuttings. When it comes to this, I can honestly say that my patch has contributions from across Australia.

Most of my new plant additions have come from neighbours, friends and family, not just from my current home, but from each place I have lived at since moving out of the home where I grew up. It has become quite a collection with many stories of generosity mingled with fond memories’ of past neighbours and places.

On this note, I’d like to pass on some tips on what you can easily share from your garden and how. This can also be very handy when relocating residences so you don’t lose those precious plant collections!

Asparagus My asparagus plant originated from rural NSW and has thrived in Queensland. Division of established asparagus plants, by digging the rhizome crowns, is the quickest way to get plants to picking stage and so I always try to do this at the end of winter if I have friends after some asparagus.

Rosemary Once again my Rosemary is of NSW origin and has travelled from place to place with me and assuming it hasn’t been removed, is growing in a number of places where I have previously lived. To propagate it, I simply bury a section of a low branch and leave it for a month or so until it grows some roots. I then cut this off the mother plant and pot it up. I find this a lot more effective, simple and reliable than taking cuttings.

Herbs and small plants I have loads of different herbs despite the fact that I don’t actually use most of them as much as I should.

I find many herbs such as mint, chives and oregano tend to live through anything and are harder to kill than grow, so these I tend to just try to keep tame in a pot. Hence these are very simple just to cut and pass on to anyone to grow anywhere. My aloe vera plant has come with me everywhere and just pulling off a pup and planting it up for a friend works just fine.

Finally, I have kept my strawberries from since I first left home, always taking a large pot of new plants that I can take runners from to start up new patches wherever I go. These also make great little gifts to young and old gardeners alike.

Cuttings – mulberries Now is a great time to get some new mulberry plants on the go. Last year I started my mulberry hedge simply by sticking cuttings directly in the ground. Mulberries are one of the simplest cuttings you will ever do.

Tubers – greater yam, yacon I have kept some of the rhizomes and tubers of my yacon that I dug up earlier this year in a cool dark place in damp sand and any spare I have at planting time I like to share out.

Likewise, when I dig my greater yam plant up soon, I will share pieces around for others to grow.

Sharing knowledge and resources is one of the most precious gifts of gardening. As we enter spring, look around your patch and see what you can share with a neighbour, friend or family.

Build it and they will come (croak croak) Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRW&L) help a lot of larger landholders to look after and manage their land and waterways for the protection of our environment, plants and animals.

But smaller householders can also play a part in making our landscape a place where native wildlife can live happily and thrive.

One way is to create a backyard pond which is both beautiful and a wildlife haven. It’s not as hard as you might think, but it’s not just a matter of digging a hole and filling it with water.

There are some important factors to take into account if you want your backyard pond to be a wildlife sanctuary rather than a toad and mosquito playground.

To help people get started on the right foot, MRW&L are hosting a workshop on pond construction on the morning of September 8 at their nursery on Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.

Patrick Handley and Mitch Davis from Waterscapes Australia will conduct the workshop to demonstrate how to set up a pond. It is a five hour practical workshop that will cover the correct installation of a pond with a small wetland filtration system.

Waterfall construction, rock and pebble choice, edge finishing, and pond ecology will also be covered. The finished pond will be functioning and beautiful. This is a practical workshop and all participants are invited to turn up ready to help if they want to.

The cost is only $20.00 (morning tea provided). All you need to bring is a hat, water bottle, gloves and enclosed footwear – and enthusiasm.

Open Garden with real heart Orchid Grove, 17 Barkston Court, Buderim will be open as part of the Open Gardens Australia on September 15 and 16 10.00am - 4.30pm daily.

The weekend is a fundraising venture for the medical humanitarian aid programs in Vietnam, especially for the children impacted by the ongoing effects of agent orange. Funds will also go towards an ambulance medical boat in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam - a first for SE Asia! This will assist greatly with poor families and emergencies along the many waterways, canals and rivers.

Because it is a year of ‘historic exhibits’ for Buderim, this garden will display farm and antique equipment and items that date back to early Australian settlement. Entry is $6.00, with children free.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end, about their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, and where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

As the man by the window described the scene in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

Pastor Rod Jobe Church on the Rise One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. The other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. Slowly, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.

It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. She said he was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, “perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.” (Author unknown) There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.

Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.

If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

It is always ‘more blessed to give than receive’.

Taekwondo Kicks off in Beerwah The Beerwah Primary School hall is now the home for the newest class of San Taekwondo.

Fifteen fresh and enthusiastic locals made up the group who took part in the first ever class.

Instructor and second dan black belt Cameron Taylor, who recently returned from training in Korea, will be keeping the group busy and teaching the skills of this traditional martial art.

“It was really exciting to see so many new students at our first class, I’m sure that the club will continue to grow,” said Cameron.

“I hope the whole family will come along and give it a try with a two week free trial and half price training for September and October.”

San Taekwondo has been running classes on the Sunshine Coast hinterland for more than eight years and has a well-established class in Maleny.

“When I was six-years-old I started taekwondo because I wanted to become a Power Ranger.

Since then it has helped me in all aspects of my life and has given me many opportunities, including recently travelling overseas.

“While training in Korea, the Masters’ encouraged me to begin teaching and I’m looking forward to telling them about the success of the Beerwah class,” he said.

The classes in the primary school hall will get you moving and are great for fitness as well as teaching a simple and effective system of self defence. The club supports family involvement and reinforces respect, safety and responsible attitudes within the community while developing self confidence.

Glasshouse Ponyclub

Contributed by Kelly Wall The ‘Mounted Games’ was held on Saturday, September 1, with more than eight teams attending, all dressed up matching their ponies.

Each team included four riders with fantastic team names.

The mounted games are an equestrian sport in which includes very fast games that are played by people of all ages on their ponies or horses.

They require a degree of athletic ability, good riding skills, hand to eye co-ordination, determination, perseverance and a competitive spirit, which nevertheless requires the ability to work together with other riders and a willingness to help one another.

There were no age restrictions at our event, from beginners to riders who compete at a state level.

The day went really well, so a big thank you to all the friendly riders, great judges, linesmen / women, photographers, helpers and canteen ladies.

Beerwah Bulldogs

Contributed by Dean Roberts The weekend saw the Beerwah Bulldogs Under 11 team play their grand final at Bribie Island against Bribie. While the scoreboard did not go in their favour, they can still be proud of the way they played on the day and throughout the 2012 Season.

The same could be said of the Under 13C team which ended their semi final campaign against Coolum last week at Caboolture and will look forward to 2013 with much anticipation.

The curtain comes down on both the SCJRL and SCGRL seasons this weekend with Beerwah hosting the Junior Grand Finals and the Senior Grand Finals at Stockland Stadium.

There will be 13 games of footy at Beerwah starting at 9.00am with the Bulldogs Under 12 team playing Maroochydore. Entry fee for the day is $5.00 which is a SCJRL Ruling but is great value for money with the best junior rugby league talent from the Sunshine Coast on show.

In the senior grand final, the Gympie Devils will be trying the break the Kawana Dolphins unbeaten run in 2012 while in Reserve Grade, Kawana will be playing Maroochydore.

The under 18 Final will see Kawana playing Nambour and in C Grade the Kilcoy Yowies will battle with the Coolum Colts.

Good luck to all in their grand finals this weekend.

Runners up in the Gross event were Lea Garner and Barb Drury with a score of 138. Winners of the 27 Hole Nett were Mavis Brimelow and Pam Gormley with a total Nett score of 106. Runners up were Cath Cherry and Oriel Lyon with a score of 112 1/2. We run an 18 hole nett and last 9 hole nett competition.

The 18 hole winners were Brid John and Roselie Green, with Di Smith and Joan Fletcher taking out the last 9 hole prize. NTP's were Leith Barnes and Alison Behncken on 2, Sue Williamson and Barb Whitfield on 5, Marjorie Pavitt and Beth Butler on 16, Betty Howe and Barbara Foy on 18, Mavis and Pam on the 20 and the 23rd was a skinner. The Ball Rundown went to 118 Nett.
