Hi Everyone...
What's Happening September 2018
Well it’s official - winter is over, Spring has arrived and you know what that means, the sun is shining a little brighter, the days are getting longer (well the daylight hours at least) and most importantly the countdown is on to Christmas. Sorry to scare you like that … but I have noticed that the word Christmas has started creeping into my conversations. We had been a little worried that Christmas would not be the same in Glasshouse Country when we learnt earlier in the year that the wonderful Jenny Broderick, the long-time coordinator of the Community Christmas Carols, had decided to step away from the role. However, the good news is that Bob Burns will be taking over the reins and the event will be going ahead at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, December 15. And in Maleny, work is already under way by the wonderful committee who organise the Maleny Christmas Festival and Street Party, ably led by Karen Shaw from Forest Heart Nursery. This year’s event will be held on Friday, December 14. So yes, it is only just over 100 sleeps until our big Christmas celebrations!

Local News Bulldogs bite back After five years in self-imposed lower grade exile, the Beerwah Bulldogs senior men’s team has gloriously ended the 2018 Sunshine Coast rugby league season on top of the Division 1 ladder, taking out the minor premiership. Since last playing at A grade level in 2012, the Bulldogs fought their way back to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in local rugby league. This weekend, the Bulldogs hope to bring their return fairy tale season to a triumphant end by winning the premier division grand final. Not only that, but at the recent Sunshine Coast Rugby League awards night, their star winger Aiden Young picked up the trophy for the most tries in Division 1, the most tries overall and the highly prized Rookie of the Year. At the start of the season, coach Nathan Hughes was reported as saying that he’d be happy with the team winning six games over the season. After winning 19 of their 21 games … how does he feel now? “I’m feeling great!” Nathan said. “It’s been a massive buzz this season for all of us … the coaching staff, the team management and the players. “But most of all, we’ve been so proud that we’ve done it for the Beerwah community, who have been great supporters of the team this year and over the past few difficult ones.”

But it’s been the local boys who have stuck by the club and made it great again. Some of them – including Daniel Kidd and Daniel Grice – were in the last A grade team in 2012, with Daniel Grice even playing in the Bulldogs last grand final appearance in 2004. If you want to join the ‘Dog Squad’, the Bulldogs will meet Maroochydore in the Division 1 grand final game to be held at Kawana this Saturday, with kick-off at 5.30pm.

Landsborough rail overpass plans given
The planned railway overpass at Landsborough is part of the long-awaited Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade project, which will see the duplication of the line and the closure of the rail crossing at Landsborough as well as those on Barrs Road in Glass House Mountains and in the centre of Mooloolah. In mid-2016 the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) held a series of information > Interior Blinds & Shutters and consultation sessions in Landsborough, > Outdoor Blinds & Awnings where they sought input from locals on the rail > Roll out Caravan Awnings & Annexes plans. > Boat & 4WD Canopies > Vehicle Interiors Not happy with the level of consultation provided, > Furniture Upholstery a community town hall style meeting was organised in late 2016 where more than 300 locals filled the Landsborough School of Arts Hall. Unit 7/47 Beerwah Parade, BEERWAH campup1@bigpond.com As a consequence, a sub-committee of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce including Landsborough residents and business owners was established in 2017 to continue to liaise with TMR. The sub-committee held a public meeting in September 2017 in Landsborough to consult with locals on the direction it would take. Since then, the sub-committee has met regularly and earlier this year presented State Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey with a list of questions and concerns about the overpass implications. Come and chat to our deli team today! This resulted in the most recent meeting with the Minister, which Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle talks about in his column this week

(see page 22). The delegation that met with the Minister in Brisbane, which included members of the sub-committee, discussed the proposed rail overpass and raised concerns and issues surrounding the plans. Mr McArdle said the residents and business owners who made up the sub-committee were strong members of the community, committed to ensuring everyone had a fair say and planned to remain active for the foreseeable future. “The Minister was open and frank during our discussions,” Mr McArdle said. “Members of the committee who attended the meeting questioned the Minister about community input and Mr Bailey made it clear that nothing would be finalised without community consultation taking place. “It is now certain that the overpass at Landsborough will go ahead and the State Government will be closing the level crossing at the rail line.” Landsborough sub-committee chairperson Tim Fitzpatrick, from Landsborough Chemist, said it had been a positive meeting with the Minister, with a view to establishing open lines of communication as the project progresses. “As these are very early stages of the project the community is keen to ensure there are opportunities for engagement and consultation throughout the project to ensure Landsborough thrives as a result of these changes,” he said.

“The group left with a sense of optimism that the Minister would deliver on resolving community concerns.” Cr Rick Baberowski, who was part of the delegation, said that his main objective from meeting with the Minister was to understand how the project would proceed. “And most importantly what opportunity the community would have to relook at the overpass designs for the duplication at Landsborough,” he said. “We were informed it will be a competitive tender process and reassured that the community will have more input into the reference design. “Within the parameters of the approved business case budget, I will expect them to consider a different design if the competitive design process can produce equal or better transport and community outcomes. “I also took the opportunity to push forward the idea of considering the addition of an active transport (bike path) corridor alongside the [Brisbane to Nambour] duplication route. I will be writing to the Minister to follow up on both issues.” Minister Bailey was upbeat about the meeting to discuss the Beerburrum to Nambour duplication project, including its potential impacts on businesses and the wider community. “I appreciate the time they took to meet with me so I could update them on where we are at with

planning,” Mr Bailey said. “We’re still doing the planning and design work for Beerburrum to Nambour and conversations like this one allows community members to share their views with us, views that will help inform our planning. “We have started talking to communities in Beerburrum and Nambour about potential
property acquisitions and will continue these conversations with the Landsborough community. “With the current $550 million funding on the table for this project between the Palaszczuk Government’s commitments and those made by the Federal Government, detailed design work can begin, to be followed by the start of construction,” Mr Bailey said.

BEERWAH
DENTURE CLINIC
Vale Mary Baker 6.2.1915 – 24.8.2018 The Beerwah community lost one of its most remarkable locals recently with the death of 103-year-old Mary Baker. Mary, who had moved to Beerwah in the early 2000s with her husband Cyril, continued to live independently in their home after Cyril’s death in 2005 until she was admitted to hospital in midAugust. Mary was born in England on February 6, 2015 and was described as a sickly baby. Doctors told her parents to take her home but not expect her to live beyond infancy. Mary definitely defied the odds. She grew up in England, before moving to Lusaka in Zambia where she met Cyril and they married in 1960. After they both retired they moved back to the UK and bought an old camper van, which they refurbished, and over the next two years they travelled the world (Australia included). After their travels they returned to Lusaka but decided to immigrate to either New Zealand or Australia. As Cyril had a brother in Australia, they decided to make Australia their home. They first settled in Gympie before moving to Beerwah. Friends Ted and Eunice Prickett said Mary loved attending Glasshouse Country Care twice weekly and enjoyed the outings, game days and mixing with the other clients, making many friends through the group.
07 5494 0766
Eunice said Mary was fortunate to have Cyril’s niece Shirley and husband Gavin living at Landsborough as they kept a close eye on her over the years. “She also had thoughtful and caring neighbours in Trevor and Bonnie, who also kept a close check on her and helped out with odd jobs,” Eunice said. “Mary loved reading, was an avid cryptic crossword player and enjoyed working out huge jigsaws. “Her love for the Lord was something she often declared and unless she was sick she worshipped weekly with the Anglican community at Mary MacKillop Centre in Beerwah. “She read one of the Bible readings on the second Sunday of each month. Her last reading was just 12 days before her passing and church family will miss her dearly. “She always said she didn’t let anything worry her as she put her complete trust in the Lord and knew God would continue looking after her. “Ted and I enjoyed visiting Mary [and] we loved hearing snippets of her amazing, well lived life,” Eunice said. Mary’s funeral will be held at the Mary MacKillop Centre, Peachester Road, Beerwah on Wednesday, September 5 at 11am.

Students learn salon skills For the past two years senior students at Beerwah High have had the opportunity to study a dual Certificate II in Salon Assisting and a Certificate II in Retail offering foundation skills in hairdressing science and retail cosmetics. Offered over two terms, the course is conducted on the senior students’ flexible learning day and involves both on-campus training and hands-on practical ‘in salon’ opportunities. Run in an adult learning environment, course trainer Leanne Standen comes to the school to deliver theory and practical components, such as greeting and preparing clients, shampoo and basin services and how to conduct financial transactions. This year salon trainees have been hosted by Vicki Heading and the team at Beerwah Hair and Beauty. Beerwah High industry liaison officer Helen Skerman said working with Vicki and the team had provided an amazing opportunity for students to continue to practise and develop their salon basin skills, blow drying and styling techniques in a real working salon.
“Beerwah High is extremely grateful for the opportunity offered by Vicki and her team and for their support of future pathways for our young people,” Helen said. The practical days are split into a morning and afternoon group of about six students each. An additional advantage of these practical opportunities is that the course trainer is able to assess student competencies through direct observation of them in a working salon environment. Vicki said that it has been a pleasure to have the students at her salon and that they had been very respectful and well behaved. “It’s been good to have them doing their practical work here over the past four weeks, and I hope it provides a stepping stone to an apprenticeship. “It’s great to see these girls have a chance to do this course through the school,” Vicki said.
The Tamarind Restaurant in Maleny has won two major categories in the Restaurant & Catering Australia’s 2018 Savour Australia Hostplus Awards for Excellence. The Tamarind was named winner of the Asian Restaurant and Breakfast Restaurant Sunshine Coast categories for Queensland and the Northern Territory. Head chef Daniel Jarrett and Spicers Retreat general manager Ryan Dillon (pictured) said they were “so happy and excited to be acknowledged in two categories”. Spicers Retreat is a member of Restaurant & Catering Australia. ‘We are super proud of the team,” Ryan said. “Dan and our team of chefs continue to take our dining offering to the next level, serving up the freshest produce in the most unique ways. “It’s great to be acknowledged and for the team to be recognised for their continuous hard work and attention to serving the best food possible,” Ryan said. More than 150 local restaurants, cafes and catering businesses gathered to celebrate the achievements o f of their peers who were judged in 37 categories.

PILATES Update with Ursula Starkovsky Chamber President The Chamber held its annual general meeting at Beerwah Golf Club on August 21. We had a great turn out, the food was excellent and Tracie Sanim’s presentation was very inspiring. I am sure members who attended will agree that the coming year will be remembered as the turning point for our Chamber. What will be different? The business community is facing some pretty big challenges. Aura is on our doorstep, the coast is powering ahead, and industry and Sunshine Coast Council concentrate mainly on the coastal strip, forgetting there is huge potential west of the Bruce Highway. We need to remind them of that at every opportunity. These challenges will either inspire you to step up and “grab the bull by the horns” or crush you. Aura can be a blessing if we handle it properly. We have a great business community but unfortunately we are not united. It seems
The new executive committee
everybody is doing their own thing without trying to bounce off each other and this needs to change if we want to stay competitive. The new Chamber Strategic Plan will help us to stay on track and move forward. We have identified three key strategic items: Capability – helping businesses to develop new skills and access to new opportunities in order to grow. Visibility – bringing the spotlight to Glasshouse Country as a place to do business and visit. Stability – to build regional resilience and strength. The Chamber has already started the process and offered a couple of round table sessions where we discussed matters like marketing, social media presence and websites. These events were highly successful and participants gained some deeper understanding. We will be building on this and will offer further sessions throughout the year which will be publicised well in advance. I truly hope that we can inspire all local businesses to join us to make our area prosperous and more relevant. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow executive members for their contributions over the past year and I am really looking forward to working with our extended executive committee.

Beerwah High Excellence in the Arts Success For All
Beerwah High continues to go from strength to strength in all areas of the Arts. This year the Instrumental Music students and Beerwah Dance Company have achieved outstanding results in competitions and performances locally, regionally and nationally. It has been a very busy and highly successful year for our Instrumental Music ensemble groups. Hard work and dedication prepared students in the Coalition and Concert Bands for success at Fanfare, a showcase of Sunshine Coast bands where they received a Bronze Award. The Concert Band then excelled at the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod receiving a second place and, most recently, on their Melbourne Tour where,
combined with Coolum State High School, they were awarded a Gold for their outstanding performance at the Victorian Schools Music Festival. Beerwah Dance Company students appeared in Melissa Lanham’s ‘In The Blink Of An Eye’ at Lake Kawana Community Centre. The 80 strong youth dance work was made up of schools from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. This project provided performance and choreographic opportunities with the students rising to the challenge, and appreciating and enjoying their extension. Another opportunity for Beerwah High to demonstrate its success followed soon after at The Australian Pinnacle Dance Challenge. The school came away with a swag of awards including two firsts, three seconds and an honourable mention.
The Company was fortunate to have the considerable expertise of Josh Lammeretz, a past student who choreographed one of the hip hop routines which was awarded second place. Congratulations to Mary Lay, a Year 10 student who was presented with one of two special adjudicator’s awards. To top it off, Beerwah High achieved the ‘Adjudicator’s Award for Overall Secondary Troupe’ across all senior sections. The community is invited to attend a free Music Night on Tuesday, September 18 and Dance Night on October 23 and 24 where you can see these wonderfully talented students showcase their skills. Tickets for Dance Night can be purchased for $10 at the school office. We look forward to celebrating the students’ achievements throughout the remainder of the year.

Community News Submissions called for Mooloolah IGA upgrade
The redevelopment of the Mooloolah IGA is a step closer with the start of the public submission period last week, giving interested locals until September 20 to lodge their submissions with Sunshine Coast Council. On behalf of the White’s IGA group, building owner Vince Ferraro (Bridgeman Enterprises Pty Ltd) applied to council in late May to expand the floor space, storage and carparking footprints. The plan is to demolish the current buildings to the south of the IGA (between the loading bay and Hatten Street), making way for a 611square metre supermarket extension. In addition, four residential lots to the rear (between the carpark and Paget Street) will become an extra carparking area. Council requested further information from the town planning consultants, including asking them to “provide amended plans which activate Jones Street and provide a vibrant active street front with openings and entries to the building provided”. Council wants Jones Street – the main street in Mooloolah – to be developed to have an attractive look and feel. The concern was the IGA plans seemed to show limited visibility into the shop from Jones Street, continuing the impermeable wall look that currently exists. The planning consultants – Adams and Sparkes – recently supplied council with a response to the council’s information request, which included some changes to the layout to allow for a section of transparent glass along Jones Street. Other council concerns were also addressed in the revised planning submission, including parking, pedestrian access, landscaping and the loading bay. A public notice informing locals of the development and providing an opportunity to make a submission was published in Glasshouse Country and Maleny News, August 29 edition. To read more about the plans for the Mooloolah IGA, go to https:\\pdonline. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘MCU18/0141’.
Mooloolah MooFest
With large crowds again expected at this year’s MooFest on Saturday September 15, organisers are keen to acknowledge the assistance of their loyal sponsors who have made the event possible. The family-oriented music festival has enjoyed generous support from a number of local businesses and organisations, with White’s IGA and Bassett Barks being the major event sponsors. Highlights of this years’ MooFest include headliner band Bearfoot, Nickleby the Magician, special guest Sam Childers (aka The Machine Gun Preacher) and the local Mooloolah School dancers and choir. The end-of-evening fireworks will also be a fantastic drawcard along with affordable rides, live wood carving, circus skills and dance demonstrations, heaps of stalls, food, a dedicated kids’ zone and more. Maleny State High supports SunnyKids
By Sonia Clark Last month Maleny State High School P&C put out a call to the school community to collect clothing to assist the work of Nambour-based children’s charity SunnyKIds. The response was overwhelming with donations of children’s and teen clothing received from both the high school community and the wider Maleny community. Danielle Watt, Maleny State High School P&C president, said that the local community embraced the cause to such an extent that the August collection period was extended to accommodate the huge amount of clothing that was so generously donated. At the end of the clothing drive, an incredible 22 boxes of freshly laundered clothing, two bags of shoes and three large storage bags of larger warm items were collected. The generosity of the community didn’t end there with Mark Thornton and the team at Maleny Hired Hands offering their time and a truck to transport the donations to the Sunnykids headquarters at Nambour. Danielle said that on behalf of the P&C she would like to thank the students of Maleny High, who drove the event, as well as the school staff and members of the wider community who generously made donations. Immediately after the collection drive, the school was contacted by SunnyKids to advise that the donations had already been passed on to a number of at-need families, and the generosity shown by the Maleny community had positively impacted and helped local children and their families. Your Wedding Guide Neville Field - artist
If you have a business that services the wedding industry, don’t miss out on being seen in our local Wedding Guide coming up in our September 26 edition. The work of local Glass House Mountains artist Neville Field is featured in a new self-titled exhibition ‘Neville Field – Artist’, currently on display at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah. Neville’s art is exhibited nationally and internationally and this current exhibition runs from February 25 until April 29 with an opening night event scheduled for this Friday, March 2, at 6.30pm. ‘Neville Field – Artist’ will show examples of all of Neville’s techniques and feature his wide range of subject matter. His preferred art medium is printmaking in its various forms however his work can utilise a range of media – choosing that which seems appropriate at the time. His artwork includes printmaking, painting, drawing, and mixed media. Neville says: “My art is a continuous exploration of the world around me. In nature I find an interesting and complex hierarchy of growth, death and decay with the dominant exploiting the weak; a bit like business and politics! Colour can be both exciting and expressive while shape and form may not immediately be obvious. Hurriedly scratched marks, frantically chase my imagination as I search for answers to or else I just translate a feeling sparks of ideas, into an image.” He also paints and makes Artists’ Books. Neville studied a BA in Visual Art at UNENR in Lismore, NSW, before moving to Alice Springs for 15 years. He was greatly where he lived influenced by Indigenous artists with and by the surrounding he worked desert studied a Masters in Printmaking which impacted his palette while he from SCU. He explains: “As the idea is developed, the choice of medium becomes apparent… It all starts with a drawing. Drawing for me is a means of toying with ideas. It allows me to imagine concepts and explore specks of notions and layouts, or trains of thought and the use of space relationships. The exhibition at Vianta will ” be ‘refreshed’ on the weekend 31-April 1 allowing purchased of March works to be collected if required. book a table at the opening To night contact Steve on 0431 730 275. Trees and art have always held a strong place in Christine Hopkins’ heart. Growing up in the south-west of West Australia, the Karri trees of Pemberton and Northcliffe were her early companions, and when she moved to the Sunshine Coast almost 20 years ago she warmly embraced rainforest trees. Christine explains that her exhibition evolved from a love of trees, starting out with unusual perspectives or aspects of a particular tree, to including the effect of light and shadows, either within the rainforest or in open spaces, playing and adding magic to the space. “Even on a dull, overcast day, there is still a presence of light and shadow, albeit very subdued and subtle,” she said. This remarkable body of work includes 15 pieces that explore trees from almost every angle, whether as complex geometric forms, strong brooding presences, or anchors for sublime landscapes. The works have been created over the past 18 months when Christine returned to painting after a break of 14 years. The works are strong and dynamic with abstract, stylistic elements giving poignancy to each individual subject. As Christine believes that trees sustain us, as does light, sometimes they are guardians or sentinels, providing shelter and refuge, and even when in the background, they are silent companions. “I hope you enjoy their possibilities,” she said. Arboreal Musings will hang at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, until September 30 and will be officially opened at 6.30pm on Friday September 7. To book a table at the opening, call Steve on 0431 730 275. For information on hanging an exhibition at Vianta email Michele at reddoorart@bigpond.com or text 0412 936 361.

The residents and their carers enjoyed taking part in some of the activities with the children and watching the little ones at play. A lovely morning tea was shared, supplied by the parents, and some of the little ones even served the residents their special plate of food. The morning finished with some well-known songs and dances performed by the children and a story as well. The visitors clapped along to familiar tunes and were delighted to see how animated the children were when dancing and singing. We look forward to many more visits in the future. Meandering in Montville made easier
A series of Sunshine Coast Council infrastructure projects in Montville will make it safer and easier for residents and visitors to get around with a carpark expansion, major pathway link and four pedestrian crossings all near the town’s centre. Divisional Councillor Jenny McKay joined residents and business representatives last week to inspect new carparks and landscaping at Russell Family Park and a new 150 metre section of pathway on Balmoral Road, which leads into the town. Work is due to be completed on four raised pedestrian crossings – one upgraded and three new – in the coming weeks.
Councillor McKay said she had received positive feedback from the community about the improvements. “Council has made it easier for people to visit the town and for our residents to walk around,” Cr McKay said. “We now have an additional 125 car parks at Russell Family Park, 55 more than the previous gravel carpark, as well extensive landscaping with 3,300 new trees, shrubs and … groundcover plants. “We know Montville is a place where people love to wander around and the new crossings will make walking around the town centre easier and safer.

Landsborough unit development decision stalls A decision on the much-debated unit and rooming accommodation development application for 37 Maleny Street, Landsborough has been deferred. The development of 23 units and 10 ‘rooming accommodation’ rooms on a 4,703 square metre block at the corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street North has generated considerable interest and angst within the Landsborough community. A public forum on the issue was held in June, where the consensus was that people were uneasy with the potential high density of living that could result from the current development plans. Last week, Adams and Sparkes, the planning
consultant for the developer, made a request to Sunshine Coast Council for an extension of time to address the more than 100 points of issue that council made in its 24-page information request back to the developer. With the deadline looming at the end of this week, Adams and Sparkes requested a threemonth extension to “…enable the applicant more time to address items of the information request”. With the applicant granted the extension until December 13, it is unlikely a council planning determination will be made until sometime in early 2019.
Technology trial to help wildlife cross roads safely A new approach to managing wildlife crossing roads on the Sunshine Coast is being trialled at Sippy Downs. Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), has installed an acoustic fence and will add purposebuilt electronic signs along Sippy Downs Drive with the goal of reducing incidents involving kangaroos along this stretch of road. The ‘virtual fence’ and the electronic signs are designed to change both kangaroo and driver behaviour. Most incidents occur because of the surprise element for both the driver and the kangaroo. With the new equipment, kangaroos are alerted to oncoming cars or motorbikes before crossing and correspondingly cars and motorbikes are warned to slow down. The council has paid for the materials and installation of the fence, and USC will provide ongoing basic maintenance and monitoring of kangaroos. As part of the project, USC researchers will monitor the sites over coming months and report

back on the outcomes of the trial. Councillor Jenny McKay said that in addition to this, council had recently started a project to better understand and ultimately improve fauna movement across the Sunshine Coast. The project includes determining the location and effectiveness of existing fauna movement infrastructure, confirming problem areas and prioritising locations where fauna movement could potentially be improved. “Research and wildlife monitoring projects such as this will inform the development of our kangaroo management plan for the region,” Cr McKay said. USC lecturer in wildlife ecology (and Maleny resident) Dr Scott Burnett said several strategies had been put in place at the university to reduce collisions with kangaroos, including the installation of road signage and speed bumps, and an awareness-raising campaign for staff and students. “While this trial has the potential to assist with reducing the number of incidents involving kangaroos and vehicles, it’s important to remember that kangaroos, like all wildlife, can never be managed 100% of the time,” Dr Burnett said.

POLICE BEAT
Thieves continue to target our local area The Glasshouse Country area continued to be targeted last week by thieves who broke into multiple cars at Palmview and Beerburrum looking for valuable items. Last Wednesday evening thieves stole a substantial amount of cash, as well as jewellery, electronics and other personal accessories. Sunshine Coast Police are urging residents to remove valuables from their vehicles and to lock vehicles, even when parked at home. Leaving your car unlocked, or leaving keys in obvious or easily accessible places makes it an easier target for potential thieves. Even if your car is locked it is recommended you remove valuables, particularly cash or items that are easy to sell for cash, as these have a higher appeal to offenders. Consider installing sensor lighting in the area where you park your vehicle or even CCTV. If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24 hours a day.

A group of 19 year 6 students from Mapleton State School recently attend a special event celebrating National Seniors Week with 26 of RangeCare’s elderly clients at ‘The Cottage’. Everyone enjoyed a tasty, party-themed morning tea which was followed by a 40-minute interactive magic show, as well as games and puzzles. All the students received a book courtesy of the Mapleton Community Library. A special highlight of the morning was the opportunity to interact with the magician who moved from table to table doing extra tricks and letting everyone pat ‘Mr Fluffy’, his rabbit. Following the success of the day both the school and RangeCare have committed to setting up a regular program of events bringing students and our community’s elders together.

Re - Carcinogenic potential
I share Gerry Muller’s concerns in his letter in GC&MNews, August 22 edition regarding the use of pesticides such as trichlorfon on avocado orchards within Maleny. My concern is that I have been raising these very issues with Sunshine Coast Council, and have to date received no response, not even acknowledgement that my concerns have been noted. What residents and visitors to Maleny may not be aware of is that hazardous chemicals including trichlorfon are being sprayed using a large industrial fan-forced spray unit within metres of houses and along the border to Mary Cairncross Nature Reserve. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age - where we have access to the most up-to-date information, including Safety Data Sheets that clearly detail the physical and environmental impact of exposure to these chemicals - that we would allow this to knowingly continue. The people being exposed to spray drift from the spraying of trichlorfon are our children, our elderly and our local and international visitors. I would think council had some sort of obligation to be warning visitors to the reserve of the potential for exposure to hazardous chemicals while they are traversing the walkways within the reserve. Paul Gardiner Maleny
EMF and EM radiation
The letter from Gerry Muller in GC&MNews, August 22 edition has missed a key point as do many when they discuss EM fields and its impact on the human body. While the power of the field - measured in microwatts per square cm (microW/cm2) - is taken into account, the other measurement of fields is ignored. That is, the radiofrequency (RF) of the field which has an effect on cellular tissue. Despite the ARPANSA standards that NBN works with, international scientific research on problems arising from EM radiation in the ranges of 600Mhz up to 10GHz (includes all microwave frequencies) is subject to ongoing research today. Phone towers work on 900Mhz or 1.8Ghz, and NBN towers work on 2.4Ghz RF (same as microwave ovens and WiFi modems). The Gigahertz (GHz) RF is equal to 1,000,000,000 Hz. It’s vibrating at that frequency per second and can interfere with human cell tissue. The Reykjavik Appeal on wireless technology in schools (March 2017) was signed by some 350 scientists who wrote: "RF radiation may also affect the bloodbrain barrier to open and let toxic molecules into the brain, hurt neurons in hippocampus (the brain centre for memory), down or up regulate essential proteins

Dr Joel Moskowitz writing on cellphones and health for The Green Gazette (September/October 2013) said: "Many studies have found that exposure to lowintensity cellphone radiation (microwave frequency) can open the blood-brain barrier. This can enable toxins in the blood to penetrate the brain." As for trichlorfon, it’s one of many common toxic chemicals. Try atrazine, methyl bromide, chloropicrin, glyphosate, dichloropropene and all organophosphates - they are all cancer causing. Richard Giles Conondale
Doggy poo
On behalf of my Landsborough dog walking friends, we are collectively protesting to the Sunshine Coast Council about the increased situation of doggy-poo on our footpaths. We take pride in our neighbourhood and pick-up dropped plastic bags, bottles and other garbage, but we draw the line in cleaning up other people’s dog droppings. Perhaps our Cr Baberowski could offer some useful suggestions on how to address this disgusting problem caused by disrespectful local residents. J. Fleming Landsborough
What is a community asset - Part 2
Mayoral and councillor discretionary funds are intended to assist with projects in the community’s interest that meet a worthy, compelling and impromptu need. They have the advantage for the recipient of obviating a lot of form-filling and for the donor of showing largesse while avoiding the strictures of accountability. The advantage for us ratepayers, who foot the bill, is less discernible. The trajectory of the Maleny Community Precinct from community asset to a sort of faux country club is evident in two donations revealed in the report of the Mayoral and Councillor Discretionary Funding for 2017-18, published recently on council’s website. They show that Mayor Jamieson gave $10,000 towards a marquee clubhouse for the Maleny Golf Club, and Cr Jenny McKay $1,500 towards another clubhouse for the Maleny Bridge Club, which is sited next door to a clubhouse/museum erected by the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club with council assistance in 2015. On top of these, we are threatened with another building for swimmers and gym users a short distance away. The Precinct Master Plan of 2010, which is both a bible when it suits and not a bible when it doesn’t, provides for one “shared clubhouse
You Said It and functions centre” open to everyone. Meantime, the precinct’s most numerous users, strollers from town including venerable old ladies, have nowhere to sit down and must nick into the bush if they need a comfort stop. This ludicrous situation has arisen in part because, although Maleny is replete with influential organisations that cater to sport, games, fitness, the environment, service, the arts, gardening, you name it, there is none to which the community can turn when common interests are at stake, like the paucity of parks and the mislocation of petrol stations. Campaigns like ours step into the breach but in the end we must rely on the good sense of our elected representatives, a pessimistic prospect if their discretionary funding habits are anything to go by. Part-time parliamentarian? Not on my watch!
In all the craziness occurring in federal politics you may have missed what happened in State Parliament recently. Democracy has taken a huge hit with Annastacia Palaszczuk’s government passing a permanent gag order on political debate in the Parliament of Queensland. On the back of introducing so-called “family friendly” hours (to be blunt, finishing debate at 7.30pm does my family no favours), the removal of speaking opportunities for opposition and crossbench members of parliament and the guillotining of legislative debate that has occurred over the last six months, this gag will mean the government sets the time limits on each debate and the debate is automatically shut down if that limit is reached. If any other government had done this, it would be considered arrogant, out of touch and undemocratic – which is exactly what it is! I have been elected to represent you, the Glass House electorate, in Queensland Parliament. Where I would usually have ample time to contribute to legislative matters in important debates that affect you as residents and taxpayers, it’s increasingly likely I may now not even get a chance to speak. You have not elected me to be a part-time parliamentarian. I’m outraged over this gag order. I will happily sit longer and later if it means I can speak on your behalf. If I were a constituent, I would be furious about the perceived lack of representation that is about to ensue, and you as my constituents have every right to be mad about this. The permanent gagging of the people’s house is a political low-point and Queensland deserves better. Andrew Powell MP Glass House
Why should I get a pre-approval? Purchasing a property can be stressful. Getting a pre-approval from your lender before you make an offer on a property should bring you some peace of mind. A pre-approval is an indication from a lender of how much they are willing to lend you. It is not a guarantee, however, and can change if your circumstances change or if you don’t meet the set conditions. Equally, there are no obligations on your part to proceed and finalise a loan with that bank. There are a number of benefits of getting a pre-approval: • It helps you narrow your search criteria to properties you can afford & allows you to act quickly when buying,
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
so you aren’t wasting time. • It shows sellers and agents you are serious about purchasing and gives them confidence in you. How does the process work? • You will need to have your financial information ready to go (such as income, debts, assets, expenses and financial situation). • Your mortgage adviser can guide you through this, advise you on the most suitable loan options and submit your application. • The lender will assess how much they are prepared to lend you. They may also perform a credit check and may want to know what type of
property you plan on purchasing. • Your adviser will let you know the outcome of your application, including any conditions that need to be met such as finding a suitable property and receiving the expected (registered) valuation and acceptance of Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) by the mortgage insurer (if applicable). • When you find a property, let your adviser know and provide a copy of the contract of sale. They will work with you to complete a request for formal approval of the mortgage. What to be careful of: • If you have applied for more than a few pre-approvals with multiple lenders
within a short timeframe, it can look bad on your credit history. • Pre-approvals are typically only valid for 90 days, so don’t apply unless you are ready to buy. Every home loan situation is different. Call Teresa Harrison to discuss your pre-approval today!

Book week - find your treasure
This year’s theme for Book Week was “Find your treasure” and across Glasshouse Country there were some pretty creative interpretations incorporated into the local students’ costumes. Our favourite from those submitted was definitely this very cute map, Amali. Yes, her mum does work

Christmas Carols
Discussions are well under way between Sunshine Coast Council’s grant team and a new producer for the Glasshouse Country Carols event. Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall committee is the grant applicant. We’re delighted that the new event manager is a local with tremendous experience. He will work with a transition team from the previous applicant (Churches of Christ) to add new ideas and programming. To get through the transition year, I’ve offered some extra support from my discretionary funds. The ultimate aim is for the carols event to become self-sustaining to ensure it continues far into the future. Save the date: Saturday, December 15 at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds.
Landsborough Place Making
Council’s Place Making Team has finalised the community update on the feedback received during the visions and values exercise held earlier this year. The team is now working closely with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to better understand the Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) rail duplication project and keep track on how the road/rail design will impact Landsborough and therefore help shape the council/community master plan. View the latest update at https://haveyoursay. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/landsborough-placemaking-master-plan. On the topic of the B2N, I went with state member Mark McArdle’s delegation to see Transport Minister Mark Bailey last week. My main purpose was to understand how the project would proceed and most importantly what opportunity the community would have to relook at the overpass designs for the duplication at Landsborough. We were informed it will be a competitive tender process and were reassured that the community will have more input into the reference design. I also took the opportunity to push forward the idea of considering the addition of an active transport (bike path) corridor alongside the B2N duplication route. I will be writing to the Minister to follow up on both issues.
22
State Member for Caloundra Landsborough sub-committee members made an important trip to State Parliament last Wednesday to join me in discussions with Mark Bailey, the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, on the contentious issue of a proposed rail overpass in Landsborough. While last week’s meeting with the Minister was preliminary only - with many more expected in the future – the discussion will give the community a bit more clarity surrounding the project. I would like to thank the members of the committee who attended the meeting with Mr Bailey. The Minister was open and frank during our discussions, and there were a few important take away points from the meeting. It is certain that the overpass at Landsborough will go ahead and the State Government will close the level crossing at the rail line. However, we have some way to go before shovels break ground on this project. Members of the committee who attended the meeting questioned the Minister about community input. Mr Bailey made it clear that nothing would be finalised without community consultation taking place. It is also important to note the current proposal is only a “reference plan” and costings and a specific timeline are not yet complete. It is likely at this stage that at least two construction companies will compete for the tender for the work, which means Landsborough will be given the best opportunity for the best outcome. The sub-committee was formed under the umbrella of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce after the Labor Government announced in 2016 that a possible overpass would be built at Landsborough.
Region’s first ever Arts Plan
A 20-year plan to actively develop and showcase our region’s arts sector has been endorsed by Sunshine Coast Council. The Sunshine Coast Arts Plan 2018-2038 supports council’s healthy, smart, creative vision and also aims to build a more complete ‘ecology’ of support that helps us all to be more creative and for those who make their living in the arts to be the best they can possibly be. For more information visit council’s website.
Heritage update
The region’s cultural heritage is in good hands following the appointment of a refreshed Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group for 2018-2020. The group has a broad community membership and works with council to monitor and potentially review strategic priorities for Heritage Levy expenditure in line with the Sunshine Coast Heritage Plan 2015– 2020. Living - Music Pirates coming to Maleny
After months of rehearsals, the students of Maleny State School are in final rehearsals for their performance of the musical Pirates! We’re Pirates! More than 100 children from years 1- 6 will be showcasing their talents in this exciting new children’s musical written by Sunshine Coast blind musician and composer David P Shortland. In Pirates! We’re Pirates! three pirate captains and their crews, all down on their luck, are seeking the legendary treasure of Ol’ Cap’n Silva Doubloons. Along with a parrot, a genie, a sea spirit and the spirit of friendship, their search for the treasure takes the pirates to an amazing tropical island. However, opening the treasure chest isn’t going to be as easy as some expect. Performances will be at the Maleny State School hall on Wednesday and Thursday, September 19-20 at 6.30pm. Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults and are available through the school office. Phone 5499 8333.
Music Today
with Dr Michael Whiticker
It is music festival season again and by the time you read this we will have enjoyed the Maleny Music Festival and Caloundra will be on the horizon. However, it is a modest festival in the village of Eudlo that is in the spotlight on October 6-7. The event lasts just over a day with a 12pm Saturday start and 2pm Sunday finish, and it is chock-a-block with entertainment and activities. It features two music stages and a lovely big fire Saturday night as well as a sleepover, of course. The inaugural Eudlo Music Nights was held in April and it was a much loved event with about 250 people attending. A promotional clip of that weekend can be found online at https://youtu.be/aqS3pSCXzCQ or just Google the event name on You Tube. Everyone attending appreciated the small friendly festival feel, the fantastic musicians, the home cooking, and the family and pet friendly activities with overnight camping. Dancing was a highlight among the dance-ready crowd and with the energetic bands. A great success was the big fire that attracted some top musicians and people keen to join in - flames seem to inspire passionate musical performances. It is planned to continue this event biannually – early in April and early in October each year, and the gate charge has been kept low to encourage attendance. For the upcoming Eudlo Music Nights on October 6-7 artists include The Strangest Dreamers, Rob Longstaff, Jeunae/Juju Bom, Steve Sparrow, Blackall Blues, Sam Shepherd, Noel Gardner and Alex Bridge, Lindsay Drummond, Peter G and the Flat Whites, Innessa, Ian B MacLeod, Deni Chapple, Karen Law Band, Peter Watkins, Roger Beare, Julie Witney, Muddy ‘n Petal Band, Jeff Josephs, Ian Williams and Brendan the Mindfulness Poet. There are a number of open mic sessions (with studio recording time prizes for best original and best cover songs). Spots can be booked (see the website at www.eudlomusicnights.com.au or Facebook group) and performers will be allowed two or three songs per act. There will be workshops in guitar, voice and percussion, as well as yoga, salsa dancing, star gazing, bird watching, community painting and children’s activities. Food and drinks (including alcohol) will be sold at the venue with a barbeque dinner and brunch and quality coffee a feature. The Eudlo Music Nights has been created by musicians for lovers of music, and everyone is welcome to come along and take part. Hope to see you there. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. Fresca Market & Café
Last Thursday morning our ad rep Tina and I popped into Fresca Market and Café on Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains for a coffee and morning tea. Fortunately we got in nice and early as within no time the entire relaxing outdoor garden and dining area was almost full. I am pretty sure most of the tables were locals who have discovered the wonderfully tranquil setting that lies behind the big fence as well as the great food and coffee that Kristina and her mum Teresa make on the premises from scratch. Kristina and her husband Tony have done an amazing job of transforming the business, creating a modern, open, air-conditioned market space with lots of lovely fresh fruit and veg, gelato, and deli and gourmet food items. This week instead of our usual selection of great tempting food photos we have chosen a selection of shots to show the hidden delight that is Fresca Market & Café!

Stars don’t die in Liverpool
This 2017 biographical romantic drama tells the story of a relationship between a couple with a 28-year age difference. The film, based on the memoir of the same name by Peter Turner in which he recounts his relationship with the ageing Hollywood actress Gloria Grahame, received three nominations at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). Peter Turner is played by Jamie Bell (you'll remember him as the star of Billy Elliot and, yes, he does dance in this film). His passionate affair with legendary 1950s screen femme fatale Gloria Grahame (The Big Heat, The Greatest Show on Earth, Oklahoma) - played by Annette Bening - begins in the 1970s and ends with Turner caring for Grahame when she is dying from breast cancer in the 1980s. Turner's warmly conventional working class family support their son in his caring role. As an added treat, the wonderful Julie Waters is exceptional as Turner's mother, and Grahame's mother is played by veteran of stage and screen Vanessa Redgrave. Scottish film and TV director Paul McGuigan skilfully creates an empathic insight into this complex relationship between an older woman and a much younger man. In the words of David Stratton, "...an extremely rewarding romantic drama which should appeal even to those unfamiliar with Gloria Grahame". When: Saturday, September 8 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street, Maleny Food and drinks: Dinner 6-7pm, catered by Claudes, tea/coffee and homemade slice stand, and drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm, running time 105 minutes, Rating M Cost: Tickets available for members at Maleny Information Centre, $8, or our website www.malenyfilmsociety.info, non-members can purchase tickets at the door, adults, $13, students with ID, $8, children under 16, $5. In the Garden Ask Brownie Vegie Notes
Lettuce
Lettuce is probably the easiest veggie to grow for a novice, but it can also dishearten people. If you like crunchy iceberg lettuce, keep buying it from the greengrocer as you’ll never be able to grow anything decent in our subtropical climate. Even cos lettuce tends to bolt to seed rather than forming anything decent. Stick with the leafy ‘fancy’ lettuces or the butter lettuce varieties. For the impatient, punnet seedlings are fine but the cheapest way is to grow your own from seed. I grow them in a strawberry punnet using seed raising mix I make myself from sieved potting mix. I keep the larger bits to use when potting up orchids and bromeliads, while the fine soil is ideal as a seed raising mix. Fill the punnet with the fine mix, wet it down, sprinkle on some seeds, and then sprinkle enough seed raising mix to just cover the seeds. Use a misting sprayer to moisten the top and cover with the punnet lid to form a little greenhouse. Keep the punnet in a warm shady place – not in direct sunlight – until they start to sprout, which usually takes about a week. Use the mister once a day to keep them moist. The mister prevents the delicate roots from being damaged by heavy watering. Three or four weeks later they’re ready to pull apart and plant into your garden or a large pot. Transplant them in the afternoon rather than the morning. This helps stop them from going into heat shock during the day. Water well straight after planting. Have a watering can ready with a seaweed solution and water the newly planted lettuce as soon as you have done a row, then plant a few more and water, and so on. Six weeks later you’ll be eating lettuce. Lettuce aren’t very heat or dry tolerant, so plant them where they get sun for half the day only, and water frequently – every day if you can. Regular watering is important to help prevent the leaves from going bitter, which they do when they are water stressed. Mulching around the plants is also a big plus as they are shallow rooted. As summer returns, most lettuce will suffer from heat stress. I’ve found the oak leaf varieties do best in the hotter months. Lettuce are nitrogen hungry plants, so the soil should be good and fertile. Sprinkle a small amount of blood and bone or chook poo pellets around them every two weeks. Slugs and snails love lettuce, so you’ll have to protect them especially when establishing seedlings. Use whatever method you prefer – be that snail baits, beer in a jar, a wood ash barrier around the plants or the collect-and-squash method. But by far the biggest problem you’ll have is the plants bolting to seed. Once they do that they become bitter and stop producing new leaves. It happens to every gardener who grows lettuce. It’s mostly a response to too much sun, too little water or not enough nutrients. Some plants just go to seed faster than others for no particular reason. In the end, lettuce isn’t a tropical vegetable and so doesn’t like our hot, humid months.
I’ve got this growing in my garden – can you tell me if it’s a weed please? Margaret, Balmoral Ridge Hi Margaret – what you’ve got there is a native called wombat berry (or Eustrephus latifolius). Not sure why they’re called wombat berry, but I do know that they have fleshy tubers that wombats and bandicoots find tasty. They are an edible bush tucker, but they are small so you have to collect a lot of tubers to get a decent feed. The small amount of white around the fruit is also edible but, again, it’s pretty hard work to collect enough to be worthwhile. The fruits are eaten by birds such as king parrots. It’s a nice little native climber which doesn’t get out of hand in a garden and will twine up into shrubs and small trees without causing them any trouble. They have a pretty pinkish little flower and produce fruits that start off green and turn orange (you can see them in your photo). The black seeds germinate rather readily. I find them popping up in the gravel of our driveway below where birds have roosted in the trees (and ‘deposited’ the seeds). I’ve included a photo from my library of the fruit and seeds. They don’t mind growing in semi-shade and so are good for underplanting. They are also very drought hardy as they store water and starches in their tubers. Hope that puts your mind at rest Margaret.
Plant local and support local
The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) ran a very successful native plant stall on Saturday, August 25 outside the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, raising a whopping $306. GMAN regularly runs native plant stalls and the volunteers were pleased that the rain held off for this one. Plenty of people were out and about early ready to purchase plants, with most sold in the first hour. Keep an eye out in the GC&M News for future plant sale dates. GMAN is a local community group that fosters positive outcomes for the community and environment in the Glass House Mountains. For more information please refer to the website www.gman-inc.com.au, Facebook page or email ghmgman@gmail.com.

From the churches Thanks Dad!
I hope you had a moment to reflect on or to show honour to your father on the weekend. I know people who withhold from the celebration because they say “it’s all too commercialised”. While there may be some truth to the objection, we shouldn’t leave all our thanks to just one day. The Bible teaches us to give thanks at all times in all circumstances because this is the will of God. I find it interesting that our heavenly Father tells us that His will for our lives is to have a heart of gratitude. So many areas of society that seemingly have lost their way have also lost the art of saying thank you and being thankful. God, the Father of creation as the Bible describes, has a will for our lives and that is to have the best life. Is there a parent on the planet that doesn’t want the best for their children? Notice I didn’t say have the best things, but have the best life. The best life begins to shine through when we practise gratitude and forgiveness, as we can find that life becomes

Great Probus outing
Contributed by Norma McCormack Glasshouse Mountains Probus members and friends recently enjoyed a visit to the Workshops Rail Museum at Ipswich. The group was taken on a tour, led by a volunteer who had amazing knowledge of the work done in the past, and saw some of the skilled tradesmen who are still working there. We enjoyed lunch on site followed by a tour of Ipswich before returning home on the bus. Why not join Probus – a club for active retirees? The club meets every second Wednesday of the month in the Beerwah Community Hall. To find out more contact Norma on 5439 0446.

less heavy. There are many attitudes that creep into our lives that stem from feeling like the world owes us something. We walk around in disappointment because someone hasn’t honoured us, noticed us or given us a big enough pat on the back. Maybe your Dad has left you little to be thankful for, but remember to take the good in life and replicate it, take the bad and learn from it, and learn to not pass it onto anyone. Celebrate these things because if we learn from them they will help us live life well. The Bible teaches us the principle that it’s more blessed to give than receive. I believe a bad attitude comes from thinking too highly of ourselves and too little of others. When we live on the lookout, looking for ways to be thankful and grateful, a whole new world opens up to us. Living this way brings glory and honour to God. Contributed by David Hayes Last week two Glasshouse Country junior bowls teams competed at the Pine Rivers in the Secondary School Cup. The event required each team to play nine games over the two days. Everret and Chloe, of Beerwah State High School, won seven, lost one and drew one to come second overall and only one point behind Longreach. However, they had a plus 73 compared to 57 for Longreach. This is a great achievement and they must be super proud of their effort. While Jack and Jeffrey, who represented Glasshouse Christian College, have only recently starting playing they did amazingly well in the competition to have four wins and a draw. Big thanks to Bill Tumbridge and Jimmy Tatum from Glasshouse Country Bowls Club. Without their help this would not have happened.
Bruce Page with Chelsea Jefferies, champion jumper of the day presented female competitor: Jane Clifford. 8 years and under section: Champion rider 7/8 years: Chloe Smith; reserve champion 7/8 years: Kaylah Ford; champion rider 6 years and under: Ayla Griffin; and reserve champion 6 years and under: Hayley Wall. Witta Tennis Thursday, August 30: Social bowls - winners were Bob Bloomer and John Annakin on 75 points, runner up was Chris Dougan on 73 points. Lucky draw went to Jack Timm and Lindsay Henderson. For those who don’t know, we work the points system out with six for a win, two points per end won plus your score. Saturday, September 1: Men pennant round 9 - Division 4 away to Bongaree was a tough day for our boys going down by 22. This week is the last round and will be played at home against Caboolture Lakes. Division 5 was home to Caboolture Lakes. Taking on the top team who were equal with Donnybrook was always going to be a tough game. Vic’s team had a one-all draw while Wazza’s team got up by four, which was a brilliant game and puts us equal first. It will be the last round this week at home as we take on Woodford. Hope to see many supporters Our annual general meeting will be held this Saturday, September 8, 10am at Club Glass House. See you there.
Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wagtails had a good day with the Maroochydore TTs. The score was 46-28 to Maroochydore but we won two sets and close to another three. Tennis was good with great rallies on both sides, finishing off with a lovely lunch. Thanks to players Sonia, Gerry, Cynthia and Pauline. The Wildcats had another close match. Not only were Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby battling Yandina but also the wind, which was very strong and swirly. We had five 6-5 sets. In the end it came down to the wire. Final result was four sets each, 41 games Witta to 39 games Yandina. The Witta Whistlers had a convincing win over newcomers to Division 1 tennis, the Maroochydore Blue Bells. In blustery windy conditions at Witta, Whistlers won all eight sets and conceded only nine games. Thanks to Paula for filling in, and well played to Brenda, Donna and Liz. We hope team members Aki and Maree return to full fitness soon. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover It was a busy week of bowls at Maleny Bowls Club where we hosted the Monday pairs, which was won by our visitors from Caboolture Lakes. Well done all. The raffles were won by Woodford visitors, so all the spoils for a great day went to our visitors. On Tuesday the final match of our club championship for 2018 was played. Congratulations to the winners of the open fours, Ray P, Kaye G, Miles A and Graeme G. Thanks to all the players who have participated in these championships over the past months. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks for the great support of our organising committee. Scroungers was well supported by members and visitors. Well done to one of the newer members Dave E for his win. Thanks to our New Zealand visitors. Wednesday night bowls sees new leaders, the Outlaws. It is unfortunate that super sub Paul Kemp could be on the open market next week with the return of regular Christine from her overseas travel feeling refreshed and raring to get into some fun with her regular team mates Ian and Mim. Welcome to new recruit Russ and our Kiwi visitors (loved the flowers, nice touch guys). Ash celebrated his 21st with some of the other young ones. Great baking amigo Dave. It will be another busy week ahead with our yearly visit by our friends from across the ditch as well as Northside social group on Wednesday.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 Mercury enters analytical Virgo where it will emphasise your work and health matters. By the weekend Saturn in Capricorn turns direct and moves forward again meaning a reverse turn away from delays in your professional matters. Venus, on the weekend, goes into Scorpio and excites social and business attractions. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week it may be necessary to invite someone who can serve as an impartial judge to monitor a feud. After all is finished, by the weekend everyone will wonder what the problem was! You may even want to go to bed with a paper and pencil at your bedside as this could be a brainstorming weekend. Don’t set sights too high now! GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Your ruler, Mercury, enters meticulous Virgo but before it does it wrangles for position. Avoid taking anyone’s provocative bait and don’t push others. Saturn moves forward again so this is a week where you will sense positive overnight changes. This means innovation and stability could refurbish an old project or plan. CANCER June 24 - 22 July 22 Avoid negative thinking or bringing up old gripes which will certainly result in another standoff. This is because Saturn again moves forward in Capricorn and it is best used for laying the ground work for projects that have lain fallow. News travels fast, so it is likely to be good. Resist the temptation to read more into gossip than there is.

eagle. On the final hole, the golfer needs another eagle to win. Without waiting for him to say anything, the stranger quickly moves to his side and says: "Would winning this match be worth giving up the rest of your sex life?" "Definitely," the golfer replies, and he makes the eagle. As the golfer is walking to the club house, the stranger walks alongside him and says, "I haven't really been fair with you because you don't know who I am. I'm Satan, and from this day forward you will have no sex life." "Nice to meet you," the golfer replies. "I'm Father O'Malley." Contributed by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

LEO July 23 – August 22 With Mercury entering the sign of Virgo, leaving behind your noble sign, send it off with a personal wish for brainstorming new ideas. Saturn in Capricorn, by moving direct now, sets a straighter course to health in work and wellness routines. A New Moon from the weekend is about money and requires your careful search regarding finances. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Just before the weekend the planet Mars contacts your ruling planet Mercury and strong debate can ensue. You will emerge from any disputes with your position being validated. Therefore, it is good to speak your mind. Now you are emerging from a period that had you feeling restricted or hemmed in. Attractions intensify now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Even though the road ahead may be rocky due to Saturn moving direct, make plans to mark off a new business passage as a new one begins. As Mars enters Aquarius this will boost your desire for love and unusual friends. If you are anxious about a problem with no solution in sight ask your inner guide for quick answers. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The New Moon over the weekend stirs up the urge to socialise. There are some people changing your perspective in a number of ways for the better. Any sort of obstacle can be resolved with a bit of hard work and perhaps with a touch of ingenuity. Success comes via contact with an exciting person to make positive changes.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With Saturn now going direct it is possible to lay a foundation for your new financial accounts. You sense a big change in the making which arrives overnight. The Stars say that it is not a good time to be a lender, but much better to show passion and be aroused without financial contracts. Venus produces a secret about past loves. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The New Moon over the weekend accentuates your vision for the future in bold and expansive ways that can have an impact on you with travel, current laws, friends and networking. This is a time for you to call the shots and if someone, or something, cannot be counted upon you may have to rely solely on yourself now. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Mars will leave Capricorn and enter your own sign, Aquarius, giving a dynamic boost to your physical energy and personal activity. If you want to grow a business, or get a line of credit, now is the time! There may be a sudden twist, at home, or at work. Relations get self critical, especially if related to travel that you are not willing to take. PISCES February 20 - March 20 This New Moon weekend can find you in a position to start or improve a relationship. The challenge is not to forget reality and you and your mate could have reason to celebrate. If you are single, a new romantic interest can come into view. Mars in Aquarius should see friendship in a new light. An existing twosome takes on a different meaning.

A golfer is in a competitive match with a friend, who is ahead by a couple of strokes. "Boy, I'd give anything to sink this putt," the golfer mumbles to himself. Just then, a stranger walks up beside him and whispers: "Would you be willing to give up onefourth of your sex life?" Thinking the man is crazy and his answer will be meaningless, the golfer also feels that maybe this is a good omen, so he says “sure” and sinks the putt. Two holes later, he mumbles to himself again: "Gee, I sure would like to get an eagle on this one". The same stranger is at his side again and whispers: "Would it be worth giving up another fourth of your sex life?" Shrugging, the golfer replies "okay" and he makes an
