W
hen I worked in Council as the Media and PR Manager years ago, one of my responsibilities was to be the Communications Co-ordinator for the Counter Disaster Committee. Fortunately for me in those four years in the job, we never had to be activated. However I do remember receiving a phone call around 2.45am one morning – to let me know that there had been an earthquake in Caloundra, and straight away my adrenalin started pumping. Having been awoken from a deep sleep – it took me a while to realise that we had been advised that there may be a ‘mock event’ organised during that month to test our response procedures and confirm our level of preparedness to react to a disaster. Unfortunately / fortunately for me my home address meant that due to the damage caused by the earthquake there was no road access into the Communication Centre (Council Building) so I was allowed to go back to sleep and go to the briefing at work the next day. I had forgotten about just how panicked I was in those first few moments of the phone call, until our two local earth quakes hit last week, and was really pleased that they didn’t cause any real damage, I was just a bit disappointed I didn’t actually feel anything! Last time independent book coach, author and editor Alex Mitchell was featured in GC&M News it was to share her good news that she had married Beerwah Pineapple Farmer, Ian Fullerton. Clearly Ian found himself a very business savvy wife as Alex was recently nominated for Sunshine Coast Business Woman of the Year. Alex was then thrilled to find out that from 300 nominees she has been made a finalist in her category for her online business ‘Author Support Services’. Alex started working from home around eight years ago. After surviving the Boxing Day Tsunami with her young children, Alex was propelled to do something special and that was the catalyst for her starting the not-forprofit organisation ‘Sunshine Coast Women Entrepreneurs’. Alex recognised that women wanting to be successful in business on the Coast needed access to networks, workshops and education - and so became a facilitator of the group that now has in excess of 1,400 members. Around the same time, Alex established her book coaching business. Working with mainly small business owners to write books for their business,
12/60 Simpson Street, BEERWAH
Alex has assisted hundreds of local and interstate authors develop their work and bring their books to life. “People wanting to write about their business will know a lot about their business but can find it hard to condense that knowledge down to write something compelling and concise,” she says. “It is such a massive time and financial commitment, so I offer my skills to help them write effectively and find the best angle and structure.” With book editing in her blood, and a natural affinity with written words, Alex offers authors the coaching, editing and encouragement they need to self publish their own work. A number of Alex’s clients are from the Sunshine Coast and while the business is run online, people also have the opportunity to have meetings via Skype, or they can come out to specialised workshops at the 240 acre working pineapple farm that Alex and her husband Ian Fullerton and their family call home. The awards are hosted by The Sunshine Coast Business Womens Network. The nomination process has involved a lengthy written submission and intensive panel interview. The final winners will be announced at a gala black tie event on August 15.

A sumptuous morning tea was laid out, greeters were at the door waiting with a small gift, and the chapel was crammed with as many chairs as it could fit. However, there were still one or two moments of panic as grandparents kept pouring into the College grounds. Would they all fit? Would there be enough food and gifts? Five hundred and fifty grandparents later, a sigh of relief was released. There was enough food (just) and after opening all the doors and putting more chairs outside, they were all able to find a seat. These days’ grandparents play an ever-increasing role in the lives of their grandchildren and the increased attendance this year is a testimony to their love and dedication.
Many grandparents are still working and took time off to attend. Others travelled from interstate or live overseas and planned their visit to coincide with Grandparents’ Day. Grandparents were treated to a concert and even though the items were excellent, the best part was when the children on stage spotted their grandparents in the audience. The children’s faces lit up and many literally jumped up and down with excitement. There were special activities and displays in each of the classrooms but the library was the main hub of activity. A special sight was seeing grandparents reading books to their children in one area and children reading to their grandparents in other areas. Many of the grandparents have been coming for years and said that this year was the best one ever.

Great result for our community By Greg Brown Good news for the Glasshouse Country and Maleny communities last week, as Sunshine Coast Council, and the new Beerwah Waste Management Facility contractor (Patrick Navin, Managing Director of Iolar Operational Services Pty Ltd) have smoothed the way for Community Recycling Inc to once again operate their community work and partnership programs from the complex. And Community Recycling Inc (CRI) president John Nisbett couldn’t be happier. “We’re over the moon that our not-for-profit group will again have the opportunity to continue some of the skills training and work programs we have established over the past years,” he said. “We knew the contractor – Patrick Navin – was very keen to have us back in the workshop once he (and Iolar) took over the contract for running the whole facility. “So it was very welcome news when I heard that council had cut through the red tape and expedited a great result.” At the insistence of Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, the council bureaucracy fast-tracked the compliance process. “After what had happened was brought to my attention it was obvious I needed to intervene to get a better outcome for the community,” said Rick. “I discussed the situation with senior staff, our CEO, the new contractor and Community Recycling Inc to establish what everyone wanted and agree on a way forward.
“My determination was to resolve any bureaucratic roadblocks and encourage the goodwill of the new contractor to ensure the continuation of workshops and fundraising activities,” he said. And the outcome of Rick’s efforts was very positive. “I have secured council's commitment to re-provide the tools and equipment needed for the not-for-profit community workshop program to continue once an agreement is reached between CRI and Iolar,” Rick explained. “The result is a win for everyone and a continuation of the exceptional involvement of the community that began at this facility so many years ago. “The Beerwah community is rightly proud of its reputation for broad community involvement and some seriously good innovations in recycling and upcycling programs. “This new partnership with the contractor supported by council means many locals can help sustain that reputation long into the future,” he said. lolar now operates the Beerwah, Witta, Mapleton and Buderim waste management facilities and Patrick Navin is proud of lolar’s history of working with small, close-knit communities to meet their social, environmental and economic expectations and support the local community. “It is very important to establish a partnership with Community Recycling Inc because I have been made aware of the great work they have been achieving for many years and the opportunities they have been providing the community to get involved, learn new skills, work off parking fines,

Cr Rick Baberowski and Patrick Navin with John Nisbett from Community Recycling Inc and partake in social activities and I believe that it would be a shame to see that cease,” said Patrick. “I see IOS fitting into the community well. We have employed the majority of CRI staff and the site will continue to be operated at the high standard set by CRI in the past. The same familiar faces will greet customers at the sites and in the Beerwah and Witta Recycle Markets. “I’m looking forward to working with CRI, council and the community to continue to provide a high level of service and community outcomes and becoming an accepted member of the community.” At the end of the day, Community Recycling Inc aims to promote a community spirit for local residents and business by fostering an active community development program and educating locals on good recycling practices. “It’s about helping each other,” explained John Nisbett. “And without the support of council, Iolar and others in the community, groups like ours wouldn’t be able to work closely with the broader community to bring about positive social, environment and economic changes.” And that is what a community should be all about.

Champion dog owner and now Glass House Mountains resident, Anne Freebairn would like to spread the word about the traditional dog sport of Lure Coursing. Lure Coursing is anancient sport that was traditionally started to give sighthounds (i.e. Afgans, Greyhounds, Whippets) the ability to hone their skills of hunting/coursing using their eyes rather than their noses. Modern Lure Coursing involves the dogs chasing a ‘lure’ (usually plastic) attached to a rope pulled behind a motorcycle. They follow a field course that simulates the way a hare might run in an open field. Lure coursing is a friendly yet competitive sport that is popular in Europe and the U.S.A and came to Queensland in the early 1980’s. Before moving to the Glasshouse area late last year, Anne had been president of the Warwick chapter of the Queensland Lure Cursing Association. She still retains the position and is also an active member of the Brisbane club. Anne originally got involved with Lure Coursing in 2009 and now hopes to bring the fully RSPCA endorsed sport to the Sunshine Coast. A long term dog aficionado, Anne also knows how to train champions. Her imported New Zealand Border Collie ‘Mister’ (official registered name – Flair Mr All Black N Oz) has just been awarded two prestigious Queensland titles; Field Champion and Courser of Merit. These are great achievements and represent the highest award in the sport - more remarkable as two year old Mister has only been lure coursing for just over a year!
By Sonia Clark
Anne Freebairn with her Lure Coursing champion dog Mister To win these titles, Mister has competed consistently and has scored points at an extremely high level. Dogs are run twice during an official lure field trial and scored on enthusiasm, follow, agility, speed and endurance - with the scores tallied at the end of the day. The sport is open to all dogs, and any dog with a drive for chasing is welcome, however dogs must be a least nine months old to be coursed in competition. Anybody interested in finding out more about the sport or wanting to be involved in setting up a Sunshine Coast chapter can contact Anne on 5493 0408 or via truckaluck@iinet.net.auwww. qldlurecoursing.com
Solar + Battery Storage 24/7 = R.I.P. AGL & Origin Rooftop solar, battery storage to dominate Australian grid by Giles Parkinson Renewconomy magazine, June 2015 Rooftop solar and battery storage will account for more than half of Australia’s electricity needs by 2040, reducing the need for fossil fuel generation, as the share of fossil fuels falls by more than half to around 40 per cent. Bloomberg New Energy Finance says Australia’s power sector will fundamentally change over the next two decades, as households and businesses turn to rooftop solar and storage and utilities shift to renewable to replace ageing coal and gas plants. The report predicts more than 50 per cent of Australia’s generating capacity will be located
“behind the meter” by 2040, meaning that consumers will become “pro-consumers”, generating and consuming their own electricity. “This will be driven by the superior economics of these technologies, which will be able to supply consumers with electricity at a lower cost than the grid,” said Kobad Bhavnagri, the Australian head of Bloomberg New Energy Finance and co-author of the Australian chapter of the report. The report predicts, “Energy storage will need to be used to meet peak demand in winter from 2033, and households will have more than enough battery capacity to do this. But the grid will need to be managed in a much smarter way to co-ordinate the millions of new household participants.”

By Lea Parkes Last Wednesday night the Events Centre at Caloundra was full of love and beanies. Yes beanies! They were worn by the performers in the play ‘Head full of Love,’ and the audience as well. There was an amazing exhibition of work from the Alice Springs Beanie Festival as well as beanies created by our locals. The local beanie contributions came from creative locals who attended two beanie making sessions held in July, one of which was organised by the Sunshine Girls and was held at Nungeena Women’s Business Corporation at Glass House Mountains. A group of very keen knitters came from Maleny on the day, and following the workshop, made a selection of very stylish designs. In total the Caloundra Events Centre received over 50 beanies that have been donated by the

Young dancers perform The Black Swan School of Dance, Junior Performance Team members aged between six and 10 years, recently performed for the residents at the Seasons Retirement Village. They brought enjoyment to their audience and used the opportunity to practice their performance for the upcoming Gympie Dance Eisteddfods. The school director, Rebecca Wilshire said while none of the group has ever taken to the stage in competition before, she is confident that they’re ready for the challenge. “While they will have to contend with nerves, it will also be a great way to help develop their confidence,” she said. “I am looking forward to seeing them shine, four of the students will be performing solos, and the rest of the 10 in the team will perform a group number.” The girls had already performed at the Maleny Show and will be performing again at the Mooloolah State Schools Fair. "All the students attend weekly classes in ballet
and jazz to further their dancing careers / skills with many students looking for careers in dance. "They love the stage and love learning fun routines with many of the students being at the school since I started. The Dance School is located in Dyer Street at Landsborough and offers classes in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Drama. Men with prostate cancer and their families can access information, care and support focused on improving their quality of life through TrueNTH Care Coordinators. This will also help improve access to specialist support, which is often not available in regional
and rural areas. TrueNTH has been launched in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. This will be held at The Mary MacKillop Centre, 160 Peachester Road Beerwah at 5.30pm. Wives, partners, family and friends are most welcome to attend and learn what you need to know. There will be a shared meal during the gathering; this will provide time for information sharing. Mobile Computer Technician What you need to know about the Windows 10 upgrade Everyone running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 has probably noticed the Free Windows 10 upgrade offer icon down near the time on the taskbar. I have had several people enquire as to how the free upgrade will work. Quite simply, as far as Microsoft is concerned, it’s completely free and yours to keep. But there are a few things to keep in mind: • You will possibly need more than 3GB of data allowance on your internet connection to complete the upgrade. Depending on your Internet connection this could cost you a lot of money. • There is no guarantee from Microsoft as far as the software upgrade is concerned … this means if there is a problem during the upgrade process, your computer may not boot into Windows correctly, some programs may not work properly, and worse, you may lose your data permanently. • Some programs will not be compatible with Windows 10 and may require
upgrade to latest version to function correctly, costing you money. Some people have also asked why upgrade? There are many reasons to upgrade, these include: • Windows Security Features – the new Windows updates close doors for hackers and unwanted software to enter your system. • Keeps your system up-to-date with the new software capabilities. • The Start menu is similar to both Windows 7 and Windows 8, making it very easy to navigate for those upgrading from 7 or 8. • There are so many new handy features. If you have an Xbox One, Windows Phone or Windows Tablets you will see a big difference in speed when casting video or music to your other devices. To avoid the above scenarios, we are offering a special deal to get your computer upgraded by a professional in the safest possible way.

Bush fire season upon us Gavin Stewart the Volunteer Community Educator for Rural Fire Service within the Caloundra Hinterland is keen to remind us that while last Saturday, August 1 officially marks the start to the 2015 bushfire season in Queensland, there is still time for people / landholders to prepare their properties, and over the coming week’s he will continue to provide additional tips. Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) North Coast Regional Manager Peter Hollier said forecast conditions for the coming bushfire season could create fast moving, unpredictable fire across the State. “Many Queenslanders believe they will not be affected by a bushfire, but residents could still be affected by bushfires even if they live several kilometres from bushland,” Mr Hollier said. “On a severe, extreme or catastrophic fire weather day, the safest option for survival is to leave well in advance of any fire.” Mr Hollier urged all landholders to minimise their fire risk, report any bushfires by calling Triple Zero (000) immediately and have a Bushfire Survival Plan prepared and practised. “Everyone has a part to play in bushfire mitigation and it is vitally important that we take steps to ensure everyone is prepared,” he said. “It is essential for everyone to have a Bushfire Survival Plan to detail exactly how you will prepare your home and family and what action you will take if threatened by a bushfire.” Mr Hollier said the plan must be in writing, practised regularly and take into consideration the ages and physical capabilities of everyone in the household, including children and the elderly. “This can include: monitoring your local radio and television for updates; locating your pre-prepared bushfire kit; putting on protective clothing; drinking plenty of water; moving all loose furniture inside; and moving cars into secure undercover locations, where possible. “Vulnerable members of the community, including the young and elderly, are advised to leave well before bushfire strikes and not be part of any plan to stay and defend their property.” Information on Bushfire Survival Plans and property preparedness is available at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au

New sponsor for Super Strawberry Contributed by Helen Page An added incentive for strawberry growers to participate in the Super Strawberry Competition this year – we have a new sponsor! Australasia Scales is a business specialising in ‘scales for your every need’, of particular interest to strawberry farmers where accurate weights are necessary every day in the packing shed. Nathan Lowe, local representative of the company, last week presented the Charity Sports Committee with a set of scales (valued at $485.00) to be used for weighing the entries each week, and then to be an extra prize for the 2015 champion grower. The scales are on display at the Co-op where staff will use them to weigh entries for the remainder of the competition. Thanks to Australasia Scales, who together with Beerwah Hotel, are sponsoring the 2015 Super Strawberry Competition.
Glasshouse Probus
Contributed by Gordon McCormack We have enjoyed another month of fellowship, friendship and fun. Late in January we had a barbecue at Norma and Gordon’s home which became a good sharing sort of ‘yarning’ day. At our monthly meeting Hearing Aids was the topic of the guest speaker who educated and entertained us on the importance of hearing for communication. Our ‘Musical Morning’, hosted in an elegant way by Peter, again gave us an insight into ‘music’ in all its various forms. Finally, last week we learned of the scope and scale of medical research when we visited QIMR
Light Horse in the lead
Nathan from Australasia Scales, with Trudy the secretary of the Charity Sports Committee, And many thanks to the staff at Coochin Creek Co-op for their enthusiastic support each year, helping the Charity Sports Committee to run this competition. The 2015 Super Strawberry champion will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 22. Any questions about the competition contact Helen Page on 5494 9557.
Berghofer and after lunch at the Breakfast Creek Hotel visited Newstead House, Brisbane’s oldest Home. Such a day was a great mix of looking ahead to better health issues, with the marvellous dedication and energy of QIMR scientists, compared with the initiative and innovation of 1860’s living in Newstead House in those days. Our Club meets at 10.00am on the second Wednesday of the month at the Beerwah Community Hall and you’d be most welcome. If you’re interested in coming along phone Gordon on 5439 0446.
In what will be another spectacular appearance at the Beerwah Charity Sports on Saturday, August 22, members of the Maleny and Caboolture Light Horse Troops will lead the grand parade. Come in and have a chat to them before the parade, and take a few moments to learn about their proud and rich history including the 100th anniversary this year of the Gallipoli campaign. The Show & Shine will be running again this year too, so start polishing up the car, the ute, the hot rod or the bike, for your entry into the competition. Don’t forget that there are trophies awarded to the winners in 17 different categories and as all entrants will be judged, you’ve got a really good chance of winning one. Just drive into the Sportsground on the day and register there and then. Registration for the competition is only $5.00 per car. For all-day family fun and entertainment, be at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, August 22 – from 8.30am to 5.00pm. And remember, all the proceeds go to Cancer Council Queensland to support the amazing work they do. You can find us on Facebook or call Bruce Page on 5494 9557 for further information.

Introducing Julie, your local customer service manager Beerwah local Julie has spent seven years with the IGA group … six of those years at IGA Beerwah. During this time, her main focus has been in providing exceptional customer service. One of the aspects she particularly enjoys about working at Beerwah IGA is the high level of friendly rapport between staff and customers. “We know our customers names and backgrounds and genuinely enjoy following their life journeys. Some of our customers now bring in their grandkids; and you really feel like you are part of the community that follows through outside of the store – we feel a part of people’s family.” Julie was trained in her role by the previous customer service manager – Gayle Amos – who had been with the company for 21 years. School News MF Dance comes to Landsborough Matt Fiddes Hinterland is excited to announce the launch of a brand new program called MF Dance. Offering classes for ages four to six years (minis) and ages seven to 11 (juniors), the Music Fusion dance classes have been developed to improve confidence, technique and performance. Owner of Matt Fiddes Hinterland, Taylah Boultbee says, “these classes will be excellent for kids that need more confidence so that they can stand up and shine. They will discover skills they never dreamed possible.” Instructors will teach street dancing and break dancing in a safe, caring and fun environment, that will focus on confidence and co-ordination. Each class will also incorporate an age appropriate life skills section, where kids will learn about developing self esteem, good manners and self confidence. The new classes are set to launch in Landsborough on August 12. For anyone who comes along to the launch and enrols on the day there is a special offer of the first month of dance classes free! For more details contact 1800 840 403 or see www.mfdance.com.au
Where would you go to find a unicorn, the Cat in the Hat and a pokemon? The answer is Beerwah State High on Pyjama Day! Hundreds of students and teachers recently took part in Pyjama Day, helping to raise funds to support children in foster care, at risk of falling behind academically. The timing couldn’t have been better as the freezing wind provided the perfect excuse to dress up, rug up, and have some fun. Students took full advantage and the wonderful costumes that filled the classrooms and playground created a playful and exciting atmosphere. It was delightful to see crocodiles, bears, lions and pandas and any number of farm animals enjoying their day at school, but it wasn’t all about costumes and entertainment. There are approximately 43,000 children currently living in foster care. Sadly an estimated 75% of these children will not complete schooling due to neglect and trauma. The funds raised by Beerwah High students on the day will help The Pyjama Foundation deliver their learning-based mentoring program, where volunteers called Pyjama Angels visit a child each week to read books, play educational games, and work on their numeracy skills.

Generous support for Chaplaincy Mooloolah State school students, staff and Chaplain Mark Whysall would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the local business community and community members of Mooloolah as a whole, for their generous support to the school’s Chaplaincy program. Recently Ken Grant from IGA Mooloolah and David Zimmerman from Mooloolah Dental gave cash donations as well as anonymous donations from community members. The Mooloolah Community Centre has also contributed to the Chaplaincy program. Without such wonderful support the Chaplaincy program would not exist. Chaplaincy within schools offers social and emotional support, community development, supporting education, mentoring and role modelling and extracurricular activities.

Student Leaders Investiture Contributed by Tania Hayden Beerwah State High School recently inducted its new student leadership team for 2015-16, and students, staff and special guests from the Primary school, as well as family and friends, came together to celebrate in a special parade and were entertained by the concert band. This talented and dedicated group of senior and junior students were chosen by their peers and staff at the school to represent the student body and to work together to promote the school and organise events for students and the wider community. It is an honour to be selected as a school leader and be seen as a role model for others to emulate. It is not always an easy job but it is one that is very fulfilling. I’m sure we will be hearing about the great work that these students will be doing over the next 12 months. We also took the time to acknowledge the great work that was done by the outgoing leaders. We particularly want to wish the outgoing Year 12 students all the best in their studies for the remainder of the year and wish them well for the future. Business feature

Contributed by Kaz from Soulqi It sometimes surprises me a little, when clients around me are sick, yet I don't catch it, or occasionally I can feel a cold brewing, and I know I'm fighting something, then it just doesn't arrive. In my opinion that key is to be constantly working on your immune system, so when the time comes it can quickly and effectively battle any bugs that cross your path. Make sure you are at the ready with natural remedies to support your immune system to do its job. I also recommend a weekly Shoninsin treatment. As well as eating plenty of fresh (preferably organic) fruit and vegetables all the time, to help strengthen your immune system. Making sure you are getting an appropriate intake of minerals is very important for immune health, also ensuring you are getting enough rest/sleep. In our busy lifestyles we are often running on ‘over drive’, we all need to find a strategy that takes us into a state of relaxation - and do it regularly. Build your gut flora - a healthy digestive system is important for immune functioning. Increase your good bacteria with Practitioner only Probiotics. ALL clients receive *

Beerwah Bowen Therapy
Contributed by Lesa Medhurst Bowen Therapy can be modified to suit the needs of most people. There are some situations when it is unsuitable or impossible for my clients to lie on the treatment table. Those with severe back pain find it difficult to get on and off the table or to lay there for any length of time. Other reasons can include injuries, disease and age.
Acupuncture
Bowen treatments can be performed with a client sitting in a chair or standing. In the case of the elderly, this can be in their bed in an aged care facility or in their own home. Knowing that you do not have to be treated on the treatment table can be reassuring. It reduces some of the stress that being in severe pain can create and makes this very effective therapy available to everyone. with Braxton Turnage Mobility — the ability to move purposefully around your environment — is vitally important to health and wellbeing. Nearly one-third to one-half of adults aged 65 and older experience impaired mobility. At first, it may not seem like a big deal — many people with impaired mobility learn to just move a little more slowly and a little more deliberately. But as the issue progresses, some people become reliant on a cane or walker – or stop getting out all together, as it’s too much of a struggle. That's why it's important to intervene to either prevent future mobility impairments or reduce existing ones. But taking impaired mobility ‘lying down’ can cause your health to spiral downward. As you move less, pounds may start to creep on. You might withdraw from social relationships and activities that challenge you mentally. Exercise may become difficult, and lack of activity can worsen many health problems. This cycle of physical, emotional, and mental decline further restricts mobility. For most people, the ability to rely on their own bodies, skills, and mental agility is a crucial part of living a satisfying life. Having full mobility helps you fully engage with the world and fosters a sense of self-sufficiency that can help you live independently well into your later years. To protect your mobility and keep moving through a satisfying life, the best course of action is to recognise and admit that your mobility is not what it could be, and then develop a plan of action to improve it. One of the biggest obstacles we have, especially men, is admitting that we are not as physically strong as we once were. Once we accept that changes need to be made, the first step has been taken. Then, simply take the next steps. Activities may include going for a daily walk or swim following by several minutes of stretching. The important part is this – our mobility is important and worth investing time and energy in maintaining. If you feel you have already let yourself go too long, visit a musculoskeletal therapist to help you get back on track. It’s never too late to work on your health!

The Maleny Music Festival The Maleny Music Festival will be held at the Maleny Showgrounds over the last weekend in August, from Friday, August 28, 5.00pm - midnight, Saturday, August 29 from 8.00am - midnight and Sunday, August 30 from 8.00am - 5.00pm. It is a jam packed weekend with more than three stages full of music, poetry, comedy and workshops as well as markets, circus, dancers and other roving entertainment, and you can camp for the weekend if you’d like some time out of the house! The festival began four years ago to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original Maleny Folk Festival. That festival commenced its life as an intimate grassroots event but after eight years outgrew the showgrounds and moved to Woodford and began its own history there. The roots of the Maleny Music Festival are in acoustic based music that crosses many genres. A quick look at the acts and you’ll see everything from folk and blues to jazz and world music, bluegrass and country including a real surprise this year, Chad Morgan performing on the Sunday afternoon. There are a cappella choirs and school bands, gospel and show bands as they say, something for everyone. And what I also particularly like about this sort of programming is the age range of the artists represented - from youngsters to oldsters and everything in between. Although directed at music lovers, the entertainment is varied, the food is fantastic, the tickets are very reasonably priced (volunteers get in free) and parking is convenient, so I’d recommend the weekend as a family event. I also have a special interest in that I am providing the PA for one of the stages and my recording studio (the Sound Space at Peachester) will be offering recording prizes for two acts that attend the festival and appear on the Obi Obi stage in one of the 15 minute blackboard (open–mic) sessions. First prize is a six hour recording session and second prize is a four hour session. The blackboard times are Friday from 5.00pm – 7.00pm and 9.30pm – 10.30pm, Saturday from 9.20am – 10.20am and 9.45pm – 10.45pm, and Sunday from 3.10pm – 4.10pm. Tip: Once a blackboard session starts it can quickly get booked out, so your best chance to get a spot is to get in early in the day and get your name on the board. Hope to see some of you at Maleny this year.

Great eats and treats to find locally!
7 Secrets Pizza One of my favourite cuisines to enjoy is Italian, so it’s always great to sample one of the authentically cooked meals at the family owned 7 Secrets Pizza. With delicious pasta options and over 14 varieties of pizza on offer, customers are completely spoilt for choice. Pizza’s come in four sizes from small (9”) to family sized (15”) and range from established family favourites like Meat Lovers, Tropicana and Margherita to more traditional Italian specialities like Napoletana, Quattro Stagioni (a taste sensation with four different corners), and Capricciosa (tomato, cheese, ham, mushroom and olives). I decided to go for the vegetarian pizza and what can I say but yum! It was a flavoursome mix

of veggies with a light garlic tomato sauce – it definitely had a taste of Italy about it and I was pretty impressed. Each month features a specialised ‘pizza of the month’, and every Tuesday customers can enjoy awesome valued large 13” pizza’s for just $12.95. Gluten free bases are available in all medium sizes and all pizza’s can have extras added - both these options are available for a small additional cost, so really there is something to suit everyone. The range of menu items is really comprehensive and customers can casually dine in or take away. As well as the more traditional Italian cuisine menu items, customers can grab and go a range of hot pies and sweet treats, and of course the

extensive range of Colin James gourmet gelato and sorbets are always a winner, even at this time of year. With around 20 flavours (most gluten free) to choose from, current favourites are the sticky date and salty caramel flavours. Recently, the cafe has changed its Vincenza coffee blend to now offer ‘Segovia’ – a slightly sweeter tasting coffee. All the staff has been trained as Vincenza baristas and the finely crafted new speciality blend is proving popular. Environment Peachester School Celebrating Nature Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C
For the past three years each student at Peachester School has planted a native tree and nurtured its growth over time. Mrs Robb, our Teacher aide / Environmental Co-ordinator, had a vision for the area as a whole and with tireless, consistent effort and the assistance of the school's Enviro Club, she has created a stunning piece of natural landscape for the children to enjoy and learn from. Meticulous emphasis has been placed on the relationship between native trees, flora, fauna and the traditional landowners of the area. Our 'Bush Walk' was opened by Lyndon Davis and his Gubbi Gubbi Dancers with a Welcome to Country ceremony. This was followed by traditional storytelling, musical dance and activities for the children to learn more about bush tucker and the tools aborigines used for hunting and fishing. All who attended enjoyed the morning immensely and were thoroughly impressed with the stunning Bush Walk, the potential of the two outdoor classrooms, and the attention to detail that has been implemented in establishing the walk. Huge thanks go to all the children and parents who have volunteered over the years and the following sponsors for their generous donations of trees, mulch, fertiliser, stakes, sawdust, time and skills: Brush Turkey Enterprises, Peachester Saw Mill, Coochin Creek Co-op, Peachester Fruit Shop, Beerwah Recycle Centre, Cole Cochran, helpers from the Peachester General Store and school communities. The ‘opening’ ended with a shared morning tea with student serving up macadamia nut biscuits which they'd cooked in the School's Stephanie Alexander Kitchen the day before.

Plastic not so fantastic
More than 300 million tonnes of plastics are produced annually worldwide. Plastics are long-lived products that could potentially have service over decades. Yet more than one-third of all plastic is disposable single-use items that will either go to waste landfills or end up as litter in the environment within a year, where they’ll persist for centuries. A huge amount of this plastic debris ends up in our oceans. In fact, every year up to eight million tonnes of plastic are thrown or washed into the ocean. Tens of thousands of whales, birds, seals and turtles are killed every year from plastic bag litter in the marine environment when they mistake plastic bags for food such as jellyfish. Plastic bags, once ingested, cannot be digested or passed so they stay in the gut, causing clogging and prevention of food digestion and also poisoning with chemicals that have concentrated in the plastic. More than 180 species of animals have been documented to ingest plastic debris. Autopsies have found that approximately 40% of turtles from Moreton Bay have plastics, including plastic bags, in their intestinal tract. Four Australian states and territories have already banned single-use plastic bags – let's hope our own State government is serious about pushing the ban through for Queensland. Our precious marine wildlife – and that of all regions on the planet – relies on communities making a stand and taking this first step to saving the planet from this man-made threat.

Electricity prices
Energy companies AGL, Origin and all the others, are advising their customers that the ‘supply charge’ has risen above 29%. This action will probably be repeated at least annually as the Australian Energy Regulator sets the increases for the likes of Energex. Although the State Government cannot take the blame because it did nothing (at least publicly) to bring this about, but it nevertheless would be rejoicing. Because the ‘assets’ were not sold off because of the last election results, Energex is still a State owned ‘asset’. And what is the State Government … it is you and me. We own Energex. But don’t get excited at owning such an ‘asset’ because if it is at this point in time an ‘asset’, it will not be for very long. Energex will become, as are most worldwide fossil fuel generators, a real liability for you and me. So as this happens, expect to pay more, for year after year, as the infrastructure deteriorates. On top of this is the newly invented ‘metering service fee’. The meters in your meter box are now subject to a daily rent or service fee. It is clever isn’t it? This means having a much higher power bill without increasing the energy used charge. In fact, we have all been blessed by a very generous and much welcomed energy price cut. Yes, your energy costs have honestly been reduced by about 2c a kilowatt hour. So please thank our political friends. You are blessed with our approximate 11% power price Reduction. Hopefully, you didn’t note your 20% ‘service charge’ Increase and your 100% Increase for ‘meter service’ or meter rent. God Bless, Ian Hall Glass House Mountains
Soup kitchen for the non-needy
Fun, fellowship and frivolity emanated from the annex of the Anglican / Catholic hall on Sunday, when Eunice Prickett and a team of helpers raised funds by selling plates of soup and crusty bread! On the day those who lack for nothing gave money for those who need everything. As a result African orphans will have a chance of a home, education and work. Money raised will be distributed by HPI (Humanitarian Projects International). As there is no government involvement in the HPI Organisation it means all money raised goes straight to the project under consideration. Merle Tozer Beerwah
Great night
Boobs on bikes would like to thank everyone for coming and supporting our cent sale on the 18th of last month. Jo and I put a lot of time and effort getting the event up and running but we would not have been able to make it a success without the support from businesses, friends and our families. Boobs on bikes is trying to make $10,000.00 by the time we return from Tasmania in January 2016. We made $135.00 on our first road trip and just over $2,000.00 from our cent sale. Our next event is a weekend road trip on the 22nd August, Beerwah to Biloela. We will be leaving Shell fuel at 8.00am on the Saturday morning and staying at the Pub at Biloela for the night if anyone would like to join us you're more than welcome. For those that don't ride bikes, we are planning a trivia and fun night in September. If you would like to nominate a team of eight for the night, please contact me on 0497 869 804, but we will post more details about the event closer to the date. We would like for everyone to keep an eye out for ‘Boobs on Bikes’ raffle tickets for our Christmas trailer that will be drawn on December 5. All money we raise is going to Cancer Council for the fight against woman's cancer and supporting their clients and family's. Please help Jo and myself to make a difference. Help us reach our goal of $10,000.00. Wendy Ward Boobs on Bikes Please note: some letters have been held over until next week.

Community action for data cable
Council has lodged a submission with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to declare an offshore cable protection zone on the Sunshine Coast. Such a zone would encourage the private sector to deliver an international undersea broadband cable, enabling the Sunshine Coast to offer direct international connectivity to global markets. Securing an international telecommunications cable could change the nature of high-tech industry on the Sunshine Coast and South East Queensland for generations. Visit council’s website to learn more about this exciting project and how you can help this submission by sending a message of support to the Prime Minister, the Federal Communications Minister and ACMA.
Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra
Time to celebrate Caloundra’s Community Spirit
I am pleased to announce that nominations for the Caloundra Electorate Community Awards 2015 are now open. This is the third year I have invited the local community to nominate individuals, groups or organisations who they believe make significant contributions to the Caloundra electorate - which takes in Mooloolah Valley, Bribie Island and beach-side suburbs. I regularly witness situations where people simply give and give, sometimes putting themselves at risk to help someone else. The level of caring and generosity in the Caloundra community is second to none. It’s these people and organisations that make Caloundra such a great place to call home and a community I am honoured to represent as State Member. Nominations for the Awards will close on Wednesday, October 14 at 5.00pm, with winners announced at a ceremony on Friday, October 30 at the CSSA Hall, Nutley Street Caloundra, commencing at 9.30am. Categories for nominations are: • Community volunteer of the year • Community group of the year • Business achiever of the year • Young business achiever of the year • Sport achiever of the year • Community event of the year • Young achiever of the year • Environmental contributor of the year Please spread the word about the Caloundra Community Awards throughout your networks so that we can celebrate and thank outstanding people and organisations for their selfless contributions. In the Garden with Brownie
Local action for National Tree Day
Contributed by David Terrey On Sunday, July 26 the Landsborough Scouts and Cubs helped out the environment by participating in National Tree Day. They planted over 100 trees at Rocky Creek Scout Camp, including some Richmond Birdwing Vines, provided by Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network. They had a great day caring for the environment and provided some much-needed screening of the camp-sites from the road.
M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month We care about our environment
Native Iris
Patersonia sericea This little densely tufted herb grows to roughly 50cm making it fabulous for the cottage garden. The flat leaves are bluish green when young and have finely hairy edges. It is found in sandstone and granite soils and in sandy wallum heath, eucalyptus woodlands and also dry heath ecosystems. The flowers are three petalled and range from dark blue to purple, on stems that rise above the leaves. They are very short lived and open one after the other on sunny days from July to December. A lovely addition to a garden, this little plant really catches the eye when in flower.

Jobs for the yard in August
August is traditionally a time of low rainfall, drying westerly winds, the EKKA and Beerwah Charity Sports Day. Make sure you spend some time in the garden keeping on top of those little jobs before they suddenly get out-of-hand. • It’s a good time to fertilise and prune hibiscus so that they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. • If you have a veggie garden, don’t forget to water once or twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the drier winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. • Keep at the bindi-eyes – don’t let them get away and ruin your Spring lawns. • If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime or dolomite. • Spray the flowers of your mango tree with a copper based spray to fight anthracnose disease. • Plant your new roses now. Bagged and bare-rooted roses are in plentiful supply. • Fertilise your existing rose bushes by mulching around them with cow manure. • If you’ve always wanted to grow dahlias, dig over the bed now and add some compost and manure so that it’ll be ready for planting in the next three months. • It’s not too late to plant a bed of potatoes. Use seed potatoes to minimise the risk of disease problems that may ruin your whole crop. • Keep your strawberries fruiting with a fortnightly feed of fish and seaweed solution. • Prune your scrappy looking geraniums and use the cuttings to strike new plants. Vegetables - Plant carrot, lettuce, radish, beetroot, capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, beans, okra, potatoes, pumpkin, silverbeet, spring onion, choko, squash, sweet potato, tomato, zucchini, broccoli, asian vegetables, cabbage, peas, spinach, coriander, rocket and turnips. Flowers - Plant alyssum, marigold, petunia, verbena, aster, calendula, bedding begonia, californian poppy, gloxinia, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, dianthus, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, phlox, portulaca, rudbeckia, snapdragon, celosia, zinnia, cosmos, amaranthus, salvia, sunflower and statice.

Dr Percy Harold - Seventh Day Adventist Church As I write this, Marion and I are waiting in the domestic terminal in Brisbane for our Qantas flight. It's a nephew’s 40th. He lived with us for a year of high school life while his parents were missionaries in Pakistan. With the loss of his mother, Marion is the closest fit; so off we go. But it is a long wait. We arrived two hours early as we budgeted on being caught in the Bruce Highway morning traffic snarl. I am fascinated watching streams of recent arrivals flow through the terminal to get their baggage, while others arise as one to join the line for their newly called flight. And we wait. Business people in suits off for the day to Sydney or Melbourne. A couple of surfers arriving in their boardies and sandals.
Peachester Remembers - Peachester Historic Committee Inc will be presenting their new book at the Beerwah Library on Tuesday, August 11 from 2.00pm - 3.30pm. The book includes the military service details and biographical notes for WW1 soldiers and service personnel who are buried in the Peachester Cemetery or honoured with a plaque on the Memorial Wall. Free to attend, bookings essential via council’s library website or by calling 5475 8989.

New experiences with old objects - are you interested in any of the following? Fun and friendship, adding to your resume, expanding your knowledge of the local area, sewing and dressing up, meeting new people, new experiences and working in a team. Then the Landsborough Museum can help. The museum has over 10,000 historical objects on display, and our new temporary exhibition – Far From This Land commemorates the lives of our local servicemen and women from World War 1. The museum is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, so drop in and see us in action. You can join the team at any time; and we are ‘Centrelinked’ as well. Located at 4 Maleny Street, Landsborough, phone 5494 1755 or check out the website www. landsboroughmuseum.org.au Photographic Competition - have you got your entry ready for the Rotary Photographic Competition yet? - as entries close at the end of the week, Sunday, August 8. If you need to find out the details about the competition and an entry form go to our website’s competition page http:// www.gcnews.com.au/content/282/content.aspx
Students flying off to university. A mother with a new baby flying in to show her new treasure to extended family in Queensland. Thousands of people, each from somewhere, now going to their individual destinations, all moving on. Seated for a few minutes then up on their feet for a flight. Suddenly this gate seating area is empty, and I have not noticed; my eyes glued to the pad as I write. Checking the time to see if our boarding is any closer. Just as well I knew the flight time. I can relax a little longer and write. The scriptures describes a flight, the waiting time, and the prospect of being on the journey. There is also the option of missing the flight. It is not an airline flight. The beginning of the first chapter of the book of Acts describes the ‘flight’ of Jesus Christ following His resurrection. It also reminds us that He will come again in a visible way. And that has been the hope of the Christian church since the time of the disciples. Each flock thought it would occur as they waited. That expectation provided hope for the future. And so it can today for each of us. What, our flight is ready! Time to board.

The Police Bowlers won the day with 130 points to Glasshouse 103. A very enjoyable day had by all.
On Sunday, July 19, Beerwah State School hosted an International Sports Karate Association (ISKA) tournament attended by clubs from Gold Coast to Bundaberg. With approximately six tournaments run a year throughout the state, the event was well attended with around 70 competitors. Local club, Uechi Ryu Karate performed well with nine competitors, as did another local Beerwah club. Young athletes from around the state compete in these events and achieve individual points which are put towards a yearly total. This in turn determines their overall ranking in the state competition. The next tournament will be held at Kingaroy in preparation for the state titles at the Gold Coast in September. Anyone wishing to join Uechi Ryu Karate-Do can phone 5494 1684.

Super Strawberry
Round 5
Little action on the Super Strawberry front this week: only one entry presented for weighing on the new scales, a Braetop Berries specimen weighing in at 125 grams. Not up there with the likely 2015 champion; but good on Braetop for participating. As the old saying goes ‘you have to be in it to win it’ – and they win the weekly prize. Don't forget that the winning grower each week receives a six-pack from Beerwah Hotel. The 2015 champion grower will also win a dinner for two at the hotel Bistro. And now we have an additional trophy for the Champion: a set of scales donated last week by Australasia Scales. So growers and gardeners, it is really worth some more effort to look for a likely contender each week! Round 6 closes on Friday, August 7. Bring your entries to Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers' Co-op any time during the week, but no later than 4.00pm Friday. The 2015 Super Strawberry Champion will be announced and prizes presented at the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, Beerwah Sports Ground, on Saturday, August 22 – annual community fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland. Jumper sponsor for AFL girls Contributed by Craig Bales
The Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Youth girl’s team would like to thank the Maleny Apex group for coming on board as the team jumper sponsor. With their generous sponsorship we have been able to purchase a full kit of jumpers. The new jumpers had a great effect on the girls as they won the first game they played in them against Nambour. Coach Samantha Page commented that the girls appreciated the new jumpers as they no longer clash with other teams. Next year the club is looking to expand our girls teams by submitting an U15’s and U18’s team. Any girls interested in playing Australia’s fastest growing female sport can contact the club for more information at glasshousejuniors@aflscj.com

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Animal bar jokes! 1. A panda walks into a bar and gobbles some beer nuts. Then he pulls out a gun, fires it in the air, and heads for the door. “Hey!” shouts the bartender, but the panda yells back, “I’m a panda. Google me!” Sure enough, panda: 'A treeclimbing mammal with distinct black-and-white colouring. Eats shoots and leaves.' 2. Steve, a lonely bachelor, wants some company, so he buys a centipede and a small box
for it to live in. That evening, he decides to go out. "Want to grab a drink?" he asks the centipede. But there’s no answer from the box. A few minutes later, he asks again—still no reply. Finally, he hollers, "Hey! Do you want to get a drink?" "I heard you the first time!" says a small, irritated voice. "I’m putting on my shoes!" Submitted by Shane, Glass House Mountains

ARIES March 21– April 20 Saturn now moving direct reminds you to pay attention to the realities of your economic situation. A money partner may find fault with your extravagance. The weekend brings blessings, especially if you are a writer, speaker, teacher, editor or sales person. TAURUS April 21– May 21 Now that Saturn moves direct in Scorpio it will finally leave the challenges against your sign. You should find better emotional expressions as there will be less restrictions. The weekend sees errands to a small or local shopping centre sharing values with others. GEMINI May 22– June 21 Your ruler is Virgo, and that planet gives you the ability this week to decipher and discuss the finer details in your work place. This is not the time to be openly critical of others, or stressed out by minor issues. You can come clean with others regarding your concerns. CANCER June 22– July 22 With Saturn moving direct in Scorpio and Mercury being in Virgo, this means a weekend of making lists about what to do with your financial spending. A luxury purchase offers much pleasure. Mars entering Leo emboldens your actions about making money now.

SAGITTARIUS November 23– December 22 Giving and receiving love means you will need to dig deep to find satisfaction! This is no time to scratch the surface as Mars enters compatible fire sign, in Leo, together with Venus, and so flirting may unfortunately threaten existing love, loyalty and generosity. CAPRICORN December 23– January 19 This weekend should see words of love, and private affections intimately warming your feelings. There is much joy, love, and even wealth, to enjoy and share. Remember that generosity goes both ways! Actions show how you feel to get responses back in kind. AQUARIUS January 20– February 19 There is a glowing line up of planets in your true love sector. Mars into Leo signals a new person, or a new phase in an existing partnership. Prior to this time your hands were full with business and that favoured better than relationships. Follow the opposite pattern! PISCES February 20– March 20 Jupiter will move into your opposite sign this month, and just before he does, this week in fact, he helps you to have a brand new start. This is a time you can move forward with any previously stalled projects and find your physical steam to fuel any new goals.
