Hi Everyone It is a strange thing we never get used to the speed which time travels – and as always at the beginning of each month I am surprised that another month has sped by and once again Easter is almost upon us. Which means school holidays, public holidays and for most of us some down time to enjoy and have a bit of fun. And the good news we bring you this week is that for the adrenaline junkies among you it may mean time to check out the spectacular ride that features on our front cover – the Giant Red Back at Aussie World. From all reports it is supposed to be very good – however if you are like me and anything that takes you into the air is neither fun nor something you would do by choice you may want to try out the dodgems or the
merry-go-round instead. But for those of you who love the fun of traditional carnival rides and games you will want to head down to the Beerwah Sportsground this Sunday for the family fun day. The event is a fundraiser being held to assist the Wall family of Beerwah. You will find out more of what is on offer in the ad on page 26.

‘Giant Redback’ the new ride at Aussie World
The ride seats 24 people on a platform with the seats facing outward, it runs 16 metres high, and rotates both clockwise and anticlockwise.
Aussie World General Manager, David Thompson, said “our hope is this will give even more reason for people - domestic, international tourists as well as the the corporate business sector to visit the naturally refreshing Sunshine Coast.” Aussie World, situated on the Bruce Highway, includes the iconic Ettamogah Pub, retail shopping and over 30 games and onsite rides. Aussie World management believes the unique diversity of the complex has allowed it to successfully forge through the recent tough economic situation to be able to make significant investments such as these new rides.
Manufactured in Italy by the company Zamperla, known for their expertise in thrill ride and rollercoaster design, it means the Aussie World fun park takes safety seriously and makes good design a priority. Later in the year there will be another new ride opened at Aussie World, currently its design is under wraps but GCNews was assured it would really please local adrenaline seekers.

Local musician’s role in Australian movie
Bill Hyde with his trombone.
Since he was 10 years old Beerwah resident, Bill Hyde, has spent a lifetime entertaining people with his musical talents. But he never dreamt those skills would lead to a role in a major Australian movie alongside well-known actors Colin Friels and Isabel Lucas. The just released movie, 'A Heartbeat Away', is about a young, aspiring rock guitarist forced to become the musical director of the local marching band when his father is hit by a bus just four weeks before a major competition. Bill describes the film as “a feel good movie.” As a member of two brass bands for 10 years, Ye Olde Brass and the Pine Rivers Municipal Band, Bill was perfect for the role of one of the Marching Band members. It took just six weeks, from January to March, 2010, to make the movie which was filmed at Shorncliffe, Sandgate and the Old Museum, Brisbane. Although Bill’s is a non-speaking role, he is seen in about a dozen scenes. He has even signed autographs already. Bill said it was interesting to see how film was made. “We were required four days a week, 12 hour days. There was a lot of sitting around waiting. I loved the fact that we met these main actors and I enjoyed just being there and seeing how it was all done,” he said. “It was a bit of hard work learning the marching steps that we had to do. I was bit disappointed that there’s not much marching in the movie - but we spent hours doing it,” he said. He also discovered another hard part of filmmaking is ensuring continuity. “If you scratch your nose in one scene you have to scratch your nose again every time. After one
scene the continuity girl came up to me and said, ‘Bill your tie is twisted’ and I went to straighten it and the girl said, ‘No don’t!’ Every shot from then on in, when that sequence is shot, the tie had to be twisted.” Bill said he didn’t get starstruck even though he did meet all the actors. He also revealed that he has a newfound respect for actors, now that he knows how hard they work behind the scenes. Whether it’s in the band or on the big screen Bill loves to entertain people. “Since I’ve retired it’s something I find very nice to do. I’ve played in brass bands since I was 10 and used to go in competitions, but since I’ve retired I’d rather go and do a concert in a nursing home or retirement village. It’s puts a smile on their face and that means a lot to me and the band,” he said. Bill will be part of the Mother’s Day concert presented by the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains Inc. The Pine Rivers 25 Piece Brass Band and the Sunshine Statesmen Barbershop Chorus (25 members) will be performing at Beerwah Community Hall, Saturday, May 7. Doors open 1.30pm, Concert 2.00pm to 4.30pm. Tickets are $10.00, payable at the door. For more information phone George MacKenzie 5439 9371 or email georgemackenzie2009@hotmail.com

Fullerton Family Celebrates 100 Years of History
Last weekend the Fullerton family gathered from near and far to celebrate 100 years since Robert and Isabella Fullerton left Scotland and arrived in Brisbane on April 3, 1911 to start their new life in Australia. Settling in the Glasshouse region in June, 1914, the Fullerton family is one of the pioneering farming families in the area and their contribution to the community has been significant.

L I R P A h t 9 M 6P THE DOORS Gervase Fullerton (third generation Fullerton) with twins Zali and Jade (5th generation Fullertons) Robert and Isabella had nine children: seven sons and two daughters. Their farm was originally called R. Fullerton and Sons and later the name was changed to Fullerton Farms. The Fullerton family still own three farms which is run by grandsons and great-grandsons. Pineapples and macadamias are the main crops grown today. Ainslie Reid nee Fullerton, granddaughter of Robert and Isabella said, “they were very much pioneers of pineapple growing in the Glass House and Beerwah district. They put a lot into the community.” This included being involved in the establishment of the local Fruitgrowers Associations and being instrumental in the setting up of the Glass House Mountains School of Arts and the Glass House Mountains Sports Club. That community minded tradition has been continued by the family throughout the generations. The family reunion was held at ‘Dunnottar’, the house on Fullerton Farm which was named after Dunnottar Castle in Scotland by Isabella. (When she first saw Mt Ngungun it reminded her of the castle). About 250 relatives, ranging in age from a few months (sixth generation) to 81 attended. Two relatives played the bagpipes and some family members also wore the family kilt, keeping their Scottish history alive. A book of the family’s history has been written. Although this is just for family members, a copy will be donated to Glass House Mountains State School and Peachester Historical Society. The Fullerton family has also reprinted the diary of Robert who kept an account of the voyage from Scotland to Brisbane. Ainslie said a highlight of the reunion is passing on their history to the younger generations. “The idea is we just want to perpetuate the memory of the Fullerton family. To make the fourth and fifth generation members, who are old enough to remember it, keep the traditions going,” she said.

Your Aldi questions answered
We’ve been watching with interest as week by week the new Aldi store takes shape in Beerwah. Many have been wondering when the new store will open its doors. Who better to ask than Aldi’s Managing Director, Viktor Jakupec, who was happy to answer that question and more. When will the Beerwah Aldi open? “We still haven’t finalised it. We’re hoping around the middle of the year, but we’re still under construction and unfortunately with the rain we’ve had there have been some delays. It’s still a bit early to put an absolute date on it, but roughly the middle of the year.” Why open a store in Beerwah? “We’ve identified Beerwah as an area where we would like to be, predominantly based around population which is the way that we normally decide where we put our stores. Beerwah obviously services the surrounding area as well so it’s not just Beerwah itself but the areas around Beerwah that we are targeting with the store there.” What will Aldi offer local residents? What we offer is an exclusive range of products which are predominantly our own brand. The quality of those products is the equivalent of brand name products but at a much lower price. If you have a look over the years at the number of different organisations that have done comparisons between our costs and those of major supermarkets they’ve found that our prices on average are up to about 30 per cent lower. So in essence we’re offering branded quality products at a substantial discount. If local residents are interested in employment opportunities at Aldi what should they do? We are advertising on ‘seek’ at the moment so if they go on seek they should find the job positions we’re advertising. (www.seek.com.au)

Any other comments? “We’ve got now three stores on the Sunshine Coast, so this will be our fourth and we are looking forward to it. I think, especially with the cost of living at the moment, that a lot of people would be looking at ways of saving money without necessarily compromising on quality, and we’re going to offer that.”
Great news for the whole family
By Lea Parkes The Howard family of Glass House Mountains recently had some great news when they found out that Gavin and Kellie Howard who run the Woodford Thrify Link Hardware received an award for the best Thrifty Link store in Queensland. Gavin (also known as Dick) grew up at Glass House Mountains, they bought the business in 1999 and he and Kellie moved from our beautiful part of the world in 2001 and made their home at Woodford. At the time they purchased the business the store was run down and needed a lot of work, and over the past 12 years both they and their staff have worked hard to make it the best in the state. Gavin who is clearly pleased with the store’s achievements said they have competed with around 70 other stores and judging was completed over a range of criteria and was definitely not based on a lucky draw! “The judges consider factors such as sale growth, the amount of Pacific products purchased through Danks, undergoing a store relay, attending meetings and the list goes on,” Gavin said. Gavin also went on to say that without the support and commitment of their great staff they would not have received the award. It was lovely also this week to meet Gavin’s mum Noeleen Howard when she came into the office to tell us all about Gavin and Kellie’s big win, there is no one more pleased than a proud mum, I don’t think it matters how grown up their kids are.

Thinking outside the box
Born in Maleny and raised in Beerwah, former Youth Parliament member for Glasshouse, and second year psychology student Olivia Baberowski has received the prestigious Lambert Innovation Prize for topping the subject ‘Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship’ at the University of the Sunshine Coast. So far in her studies Olivia has achieved a perfect GPA of 7.0. Olivia,16, took an unconventional path to university study, leaving high school at the end of Year 11, initially to study through Open Universities Australia before being accepted mid-2010 to study at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Olivia says she believes in thinking outside of the box. “I took a risk on my major piece for Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship by producing a business report, not on a business entrepreneur, or even a clearly defined social entrepreneur, but on educational entrepreneur A.S. Neill, founder of Summerhill democratic school in the UK,” she said. Despite her marker describing A.S. Neill as an ‘awkward choice’ for a business report, she again received a high distinction and her report was requested by the course coordinator to be shown to future students as an example of excellence. Olivia led a team of four other students in the final presentation for the semester, which the group also chose to conduct on A.S. Neill. This was no ordinary presentation. “The performance began as a traditional

The audience was invited to leave the class if they were bored, and the ‘teacher’ was anomalously ‘voted out’” explained Olivia. Olivia’s tutor for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Oscar Imaz said “Olivia is not only an excellent student, but is more importantly an interesting and curious mind willing to probe, challenge and enjoy learning.” Olivia intends to take her psychology study towards research in the field of educational and developmental psychology. Olivia’s long term goal is to challenge education paradigms through psychological research.

Brick by chocolate brick
A determined inspirational seven-year-old from Glass House Mountains is building a chocolate classroom one brick at a time. This begs the question as to why? Ailish Bolt wants people to appreciate the true meaning of Easter and to understand that chocolate is not really all that Easter stacks up to be. She has come up with a plan to tap into the spirit of the holiday and enjoy some delicious choccie chomping – all at the same time. Ailish is choosing Fairtrade chocolate from Project 18 for her Ailish Bolt Easter treats. Every bar of chocolate purchased goes toward buying bricks to help expand Foundation 18 Indonesia; a school orphanage in Bali, Indonesia founded by Ailish’s parents. “Last year mum went to Indonesia to open the orphanage,” explains Ailish. “We all worked really hard to raise the money and I was so happy when she sent me photos of the first little girl who came to live there. “I thought it would be fun to sell a ‘brick’ of chocolate to help raise money to buy real bricks. We’ll use those to build a classroom in the orphanage for the kids who can’t go to school.” The Foundation 18 Indonesia orphanage now provides food, shelter and education to nine children and education sponsorship, food and clothing to a further 24 non-residential children. Ailish is hopeful that she can help raise enough to fund the completion of The Chocolate Classroom, where lessons will be taught by teachers from all over the world via high speed internet. Ailish is also a Joey Ambassador for Wildlife Warriors, is one half of the Planet You’s ‘You Crew’ that raises awareness around conservation and humanitarian issues; and she is also passionate about orangutan conservation. Ailish can now add to her list of accomplishments that she is helping to build a first world classroom for third world children in Indonesia one bite of chocolate at a time. Touching on fare evasion
TransLink continues to get tough on fare evasion with new go card software to help deter fare evaders. TransLink CEO Peter Strachan said changes to go card readers on buses were designed to catch the minority attempting to rort the system. “The new software means passengers wishing to touch off immediately after boarding a bus, will now need to use the machine at the front of the bus, which will be in full view of the driver,” Mr Strachan said. “Previously, TransLink had a system in place that allowed passengers to immediately touch off at the back door if they had caught the wrong bus. “Some passengers abused this system and deliberately touched off at the rear door go card reader which allowed the passenger to avoid paying a fare.” Mr Strachan said the new software solution had been implemented on all buses including school buses. He said the enhancement to the go card system complemented other fare evasion strategies across the TransLink network such as the introduction of Senior Network Officers and fare gate closures at busy train stations. “Fare gates have been introduced at nine train stations on the network this year and require paper ticket holders to show their ticket to a customer service representative who open the gate to let the customer through,” he said. “The changes to fare gates at Central station alone have increased fare revenue by more than $40,000 per week or about $2 million a year. “This is money which can now be put back into public transport and invested in new TransLink bus, train and ferry services. “Fare evasion costs about $18 million a year and is a problem that this government and TransLink are serious about tackling.” For more information on public transport, visit the TransLink website www.translink.com.au or phone the Call Centre on 13 12 30.

Glass House Mountains National Landscape campaign on the right track The campaign to have the iconic Glass House Mountains listed on the National Landscapes program is on the right track. On the back of the successful delegation to the Minister for Tourism last year, Andrew Powell MP Member for Glass House will be hosting a representative from the National Landscapes Board on Monday, April 11. “I am really pleased with the progress made so far in this campaign. We have managed to secure support form many sectors of the community including Australia Zoo, local Council, RDA Sunshine Coast, residents and the local tourism body Sunshine Coast Destination,” Mr Powell said. “And as a result of last year’s delegation to the Minister for Tourism, we have gained support from Tourism Queensland." The National Landscapes program aims to celebrate and promote unique and iconic Australian landscapes to international travellers. Parks Australia, who administers the program,
Council completes footpaths Pedestrians and cyclists will be pleased the Sunshine Coast Council has finished construction of several footpaths in the GCNews readership area. Anzac Avenue in Beerburrum now has a concrete footpath running along the northern side of the road. In Peachester, a new pathway now runs along part of Commissioners Flat Road. “The new pathway runs from the Peachester shops to Durundur Lane, then goes off-road to Vieritz Road,” a council spokesman said.
has contacted Mr Powell and explained that they are in the process of evaluating the National Landscape program. As a result, they are holding off announcing any more inclusions into the program until 2012. “In the meantime they are sending a representative to the Coast to meet with stakeholders and interested community members to discuss our campaign and share some of the strategies and processes that are involved in the application and the program in general. “The two-year hold on new announcements gives us the time to get our submission in top shape, and this visit will certainly keep the ball rolling,” Mr Powell said. A community information session will be held in Maleny on Monday, April 11. Further information can be obtained by contacting Mr Powell’s office on 5435 2013 or by email glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au “The pathway is on the southern side of Commissioners Flat Road. Some parts are concrete, some gravel,” he said. There is a new 600 metre long gravel footpath along the southern side of Neill Road, Mooloolah. The footpath starts at the intersection of Neill Road and Mossybank Road. Councillor Vivien Griffin said Council will add around 2,000 km of pathways to its network this financial year. Cr Griffin said Council knows unless they provide pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, they won’t get people out of their cars.

40th Beerwah Charity Sports 2011 up and running AUSTRALIA
Motorcycle & ATV Warehouse 85 LEARJET DRIVE CABOOLTURE Phone: 5495 5655 Kymco Sport ATV’s from $2390
The Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival will be held again this year on Saturday, August 27 at the Beerwah Sportsground. This will be the 40th year of the event, and also will celebrate 50 years of the remarkable work of Cancer Council Queensland. There will be a fabulous mix of events and entertainment for young and old. Equestrian events, Shetland Ponies races, kid’s athletic events, Vintage tractors, ‘hot’ utes, produce stalls and food! In the lead up to August, the Cancer Council and Sports Day Committee will also hold a melanoma information night. This will be on Tuesday, May, 24 at the Mary Mackillop Centre, Beerwah starting at 7.30pm. Rhonda from the Cancer Council will talk about melanomas and their treatment; and about the Cancer Council’s current research program, which is funded, in part, by the money raised from the annual Charity Sports Day. There will be more information about these events in the pages of this paper as they get closer, but for now – mark the dates in your diary!

Volunteering and community fundraising has a long tradition in the Glasshouse Country area. Functions to raise money for the local halls, schools, sportsgrounds and ambulance have been regular events, that also contributed to the social life of the district. The Beerburrum Hospital, which opened in 1922 and finally closed in 1931, was for that period a highly valued facility for the whole district, and became a focus for community financial support. The townships within the area we now call Glasshouse Country seem to have joined forces in providing funds to keep their hospital going. A Queen Competition was held in 1926, with entrants from each centre. The Nambour Chronicle archives reveal the social activity this competition generated. The edition dated February 26, 1926 records: BALD KNOB – Queen Competition Mr and Mrs G Manthy were the organisers of a very successful dance held in the Bald Knob Hall on Thursday evening last in aid of Miss L. Wendt, the Landsborough queen for the Beerburrum Hospital. There was a large assemblage present, including many residents from the neighbouring districts. ... The Landsborough Wattle League served refreshments, and during supper Mr Layt thanked Mr and Mrs Manthy for the enjoyable evening, and stated the queen fund would benefit to the extent of £16. The results were published in the edition of June 11, 1926: BEERBURRUM HOSPITAL – Nice Lift The queen competition conducted by the local hospital committee, which has been in progress for some time past, closed on May 31. The amounts collected by the queens who took part in the competition were announced last Thursday, being as follows:- Miss Marion Cahill (Beerwah and Peachester), £163/17- ; Miss N. Stirling (Beerburrum), £128/10/5; Miss M. Fullerton (Glasshouse Mountains), £91/4/11; Miss L. Wendt (Landsborough), £50: £433/10/4. The committee has arranged to hold the crowning ceremony at the Beerwah School of Arts on June 26. Mr R. J. Warren, M.L.A., has been invited to be present. A photo from the crowning ceremony appeared in the Brisbane Courier, August 25, 1926, with the following caption: The Beerwah and Peachester “Queen” and her attendants, who gathered £163/17/- in aid of the Beerburrum Hospital. Miss M. Cahill was the “Queen”, Misses Esme Simpson and Ellie Grigor maids of honour, Misses Olga Burnett and Jean Mawhinney train bearers, and Masters Alan Stevens and Arthur Metcalf page boys.

Big, bold and beautiful
This week Glasshouse Country Christian College celebrated the opening of its stylish multimillion dollar state-of-the-art library. Nicknamed by one board member as ‘the mother ship’, the library’s large size and modern technology has made it the new learning hub Former Board Chair, Tony Newell of the College. and Principal Mike Curtis beside the Prompted by the Building Education library plaque Revolution, planning for the library began in February 2009 with the goal of building a space that was welcoming, flexible and innovative. The secret of the library’s success is the multitude of different areas that suit all learning levels and personalities. Booth style seats and tables along one wall are popular with the teenagers, colourful bean bags next to the floor to ceiling windows are preferred by younger students while the Mac Circle is used by all. A multi-tiered seating area is just for quiet reading and other parts of the library are set aside for board games, craft activities, research groups and individual study. There is even a Puppet Corner. Tony Newell was the long standing board chair who presided over the planning and design of the library and was asked to do the honour of officially unveiling the plaque. Assembled politicians, school principals, church leaders, founding members and other VIPs attended the official ceremony and were then led on a tour of the new building by Teacher Librarian Vanessa McKellar. The tour ended in the upstairs meeting room where an elegant morning tea was set out for the guests. The meeting room was graciously decorated by College parent and wedding florist, Colleen Gray and the finger food was prepared by four ladies from Glasshouse Country Baptist The impressive, new Glasshouse Church who donated their time to raise Country Christian College Library funds to help AIDs children in Zambia.
Peachester Celebrates: 100 years old and still looking good! Peachester Primary School is thrilled to announce the celebration of its 100th year, with the school marking the event in true county style with a Centennial Fete set to be held on October 15. Peachester Primary is a small school of only 120 children, but it has a big heart. The locals in the hinterland village provide plenty of good old-fashioned community support, in Peachester the saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, really does ring true. Peachester will be working to put together a fantastic day of celebration showcasing how school and family life has changed over the last century, as well as making sure everyone has plenty of fun. The Centennial Fete is set to be a great day out, with markets, rides and entertainment, displays and of course, plenty of food and great country atmosphere. The fete committee is currently putting the call out to Sunshine Coast businesses and market-stall holders who may be interested in being involved in the event to contact Committee President Louise Lewis on 5494 9651 or Secretary Margie Jennings on 5494 9083. The committee would also love to hear from any past teachers, attendees at the school or their families, especially if they have any memorabilia they may like to display on the day. As for the rest of the Sunshine Coast, mark October 15 on your calendars now – for it is one day your family does not want to miss!

APRIL 6 2011
Last week GCNews brought you the story about a little local, Jess Wall who is currently in the Mater Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. In typical Glasshouse Country style a group of local mums have got together to support the Wall family during this tough time and have organised a Family Fun Day for this Sunday, April 10 from 10.00am as a fundraiser. On the day there will be a Jumping Castle, the Cha Cha, a chair swing, pony rides, a petting zoo, temporary tattoos, and a sausage sizzle. There will also be plenty of fun on offer in the Tug-of-war competition, wheelbarrow and egg and spoon races. Some of the fundraising activities include a silent auction for a quad bike, and a huge raffle, prizes
include a $500.00 gym voucher donated by Beerwah’s Fitness Matters, a 216 litre fridge and lots, lots more. If you can’t make it on the day tickets are available at Top Shop Meats and the Beerwah Pool. Organisers have suggested that a gold coin donation be made by those coming along to the Fun Day. It’s being held at the Beerwah Sports Ground, in Roberts Road next door to the swimming pool. So if you would like to show your support to Beerwah’s Wall Family make sure you come along on the day. If you would like to make a donation or can offer any other assistance such as helping to set up from 7.00am on the morning then please contact Shelly on 0447 447 346 or Alison on 0434 468 637.
Tiny pets, big achievements
Alison Cramp and her son Matthew from Glenview have a lot of pets including miniature horses, chooks, fish, dogs and cats, but it’s their guinea pigs who steal the show. Not only are they cute, cuddly and gorgeous but they’ve won numerous trophies, awards and medals. Matthew’s guinea pig, Jazz, even won the 2010 Queensland Best Pet in Show. They’ve had guinea pigs since 2008 and started showing them in 2009. “I started showing them because mum got me into it,” said Matthew. They have about 28 guinea pigs, half pedigree and half pets. Both types can be shown. Skittles and Jazz (State Champion) They are members of the Brisbane Cavy Fanciers Community Hall, Willis Road, Bli Bli. Sunday, and Cobs Clubs who hold shows every month. The doctors at Living Well Chiropractic are highly skilled in the detection and correction of spinal problems and in the development of long term health. Dr Valerie Shahar graduated from Los Angeles College of Chiropractic 14 years ago. She has also completed a post graduate Sports Physician Program (together with Dr David Dr Valerie Shahar and Dr Shahar) and acted as Team Physician of the David Shahar with their family Back Bay Rugby Club. During her first pregnancy Valerie followed another dream to specialise in the care of children, and completed a second post graduate course and certification in paediatrics. She is now a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association. She is passionate about helping her patients through her technique, and natural healthy lifestyle education. Dr David Shahar graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles and for over 12 years has been lecturing and educating his patients about proper use of the human skeleton. His hands-on clinical expertise over this time has lead him to found Dr. Posture®, as it became evident that poor posture is affecting a vast majority of people. In response to the poor posture epidemic, David invented the Thoracic Pillow and the concept of the Manubrium Lift®. The couple have been in private practice in Boston, Massachusetts, USA before following their dream to relocate with their three young children to the Sunshine Coast. Their advice is not to wait for a backache to schedule a check up, but to call today on 5494 1883 to make an appointment and let them show you how chiropractic treatment can increase your quality of life. Living Well Chiropractic at Landsborough is located at 3/4 Mill Street, opposite the Post Office and Living Well Chiropractic at Chancellor Park is located at 2/1 Scholars Drive, Sippy Downs.
Is the prospect of renovating or building daunting to you? Is trying to choose the right tiles from sample tiles laid on a floor just not inspiring? Then the brand new Tileconnect showroom is the answer to your prayers. Ivan Roberts and Anthony Thompson have 40 years combined experience in the tiling / floor covering industry and have opened their extensive showroom to make selecting the perfect wall and floor tiles that much easier. Both Anthony and Ivan have been through the renovating and building experience so can assist you with Ivan Roberts and Anthony Thompson any question you may have. Tileconnect identified a gap in the market in the Caboolture area and wanted to offer a different type of showroom. The showroom will amaze you with its wide open aisles flanked by large professionally tiled displays that create a snapshot image of the areas you are planning to tile. They are tiled in various different styles to show you the exact effect a straight lay compared to a 45 lay will have on that tile. The only thing you need to visualise is perhaps the different colour options, as the range is so vast. They have covered all bases with cubicles tiled just like a bathroom showing the different effects with various feature tiles. Tileconnect is a cash and carry style business with the vast majority of their products ready to take today, and offer a large range of accessories from adhesive and grout to tools. The boys can also offer the sound advice the DYI needs to get the job done. Ivan and Anthony understand your needs as customers, whether that is trying to match that tile that needs replacing because of a leaky shower or let them help you plan everything from your main floor, through to your main bathroom and the entertainment area. Tileconnect caters for the domestic, commercial, industrial and government sectors and is located at 3/75 Lear Jet Drive, Caboolture, phone 5432 4840. Operating hours are Monday to Friday 8am – 4.30pm and Saturday 9.00am – 1.00pm.

Branch members along with over 150 others, attended the successful CWA Expo recently held in the Nambour meeting room. It was a busy day as displays and workshops were given, showing how diverse the Country Womens Association is. It was attended by the State President and her Vice Presidents. I hear that some coverage was also on TV. Members are looking into the need for new guttering, replacing windows and a new coat of paint to the meeting room to keep up its appearance. Thursday, May 26 has been set for the next enjoyable Cent Sale. As usual, a tasty morning tea will be served at 9.30am. It was found that a thriving ant nest had moved into the back door. Thanks to Kay and Jenny

Our group’s first Research Beginners Course of 2011, held during February and March, was an outstanding achievement. While a number of members contributed their expertise in many different ways, much of the resounding success was owed to the facilitator and club Secretary, June Blackburn. Her cohesive management of the Guest speaker David Larkin presentations each week complimented a very professional presentation by all involved. June was thanked by acclamation, as well as being presented with a certificate and gift at the conclusion of the four week course. The Guide Hut on Thursday afternoon, March 17, was a sea of green, with a few appearances of orange, at the monthly general meeting - all in the celebration of Ireland and St Patrick’s Day. David Larkin, author, lecturer, and an Irish family historian, entertained members and visitors on all things Irish. His outline on ‘Twelve hundred years of Irish surname’ gave an insight into the way surnames had changed over that period of time. Those members with Irish ancestry will find it useful in their research. Member Margaret Bruce related ‘What happened in history on St Paddy’s Day’, and even produced a very old framed painting of St Patrick himself. During the afternoon, the very first draw of the group’s new 100 Club was made, and ironically, it was number 17 drawn out! St Patrick had certainly made his presence felt. All activities conducted by the group, including general meetings with guest speakers (on the third Thursday of each month from 1.30pm to 4.00pm) are held at the Guide Hut, Arthur Street, Caloundra. Enquiries are welcomed by contacting Valerie on 5437 3879, Jocelyn on 5494 9807, or June on 5493 2679. The Guide Hut rooms are available for research every Saturday and the third Thursday of the month, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Every other Thursday of the month the rooms are open for the full day, from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Specialist interest groups meet at the Guide Hut each month at the following times...Scotland first Saturday at 10.00am, Germany first Thursday at 1.00pm, Ireland third Thursday at 11.00am and England and Wales fourth Thursday at 1.00pm www.gcnews.com.au
The gym that is all about you Kirstee, Andrea, Michelle and the Team are very excited to be opening Fitness Matters in Beerwah and they are keen for everyone to have the chance to see all the club has to offer at their huge open day planned for Saturday, April 30. As part of the celebrations one lucky entrant will win their own personal trainer and gym membership for a month (totally free) valued at $499.00. All you need to do to win is fill out the entry form and tell them in 25 words or less why you need your own personal trainer? The prize draw at 2.30pm will be just one of the activities they have planned for the day, others include two free group active classes one at 9.00am and the other at 1.00pm, a nutrition seminar, cardio competition and kid’s activities. The day will be a great opportunity for you to head along with your friends and see what the gym is all about.
Beerwah Fitness Matters franchisee, Kirstee said “here at Fitness Matters we are a little different to other gyms because you are what matters. Your fitness matters. Your results matter. “We have qualified caring instructors and trainers committed to ensuring you achieve your goals and to assist you every step of the way. "The best part is that we guarantee results,” she said. Kirstee saw a gap in the local community for a quality fitness centre that provides a caring, fun, comfortable, clean and safe environment in which to workout, that has a focus on people getting results. To start living a happy and healthy life in the body you want, make sure you come along to the open day and find out how at Fitness Matters on Simpson Street, Beerwah (their entrance is between Retravision and Beerwah Flowers and Gifts).

Re: Ann Ross’s bid for Council
I would have severe reservations about supporting Ann Ross’s bid for Council. In her published policies for the area she states her intention of promoting this area for the use of off road recreational vehicles. We already have too many four wheel drives and bikes hooning through state forest and National Parks causing environmental damage and they’re a nuisance to the public generally. I have spoken to many people whose lives have been made miserable by such recreational vehicles. We need less, not more, recreational vehicles in this area. Neither will specific areas solve the problem. There is nothing stopping people coming here to use a legal area and from then detouring into other areas. It will make the problem worse. Police and Council have neither the capability nor the desire to control it. Candidates should also publicise where they stand on protecting Pumicestone Passage especially in view of the Caloundra South development. William Phillips Coochin Creek
Members need more answers
The members of both the Beerwah RSL Club and the Glasshouse Country Bowls Clubs have been made aware that once the RSL Club has been closed the current manager and the operations manager will be working down at the bowls club, along with however many staff. This club is owned by the members of the
A cross to bear
Aaron Myer’s roadside cross has again been vandalised leaving his bereft widow Jenny wondering why and needing to somehow explain it to her two upset children. GCNews recently ran Jenny’s letter which outlined how the cross had been knocked over some months ago. The community response to this letter was very supportive with three people offering to make Jenny and her children a new one in honour of her husband and their father. At the time, Jenny said “could you please pass on my thanks to all. Mr Luke Doyle offered to make one however I had a friend already making a steel cross and then another person, a stranger, called and made an offer as well. It is so nice to know that there are lovely, caring people out there.” 20

Beerwah RSL, as it was purchased with funds produced by its members. The Management and staff of the Beerwah RSL and the bowls club wages are paid by the Beerwah RSL as it brings in the most revenue. There is no way that the bowls club raises in one week the revenue to pay the wages of two senior managers and also the staff. Does this mean that the funds currently held in the bank are going to be fritted away in wages and other incidentals that need to be addressed now? The GMBC cannot sustain this. This Management Committee has legal and moral obligations to the members of both these clubs and to date they are still not doing the right thing by the members. 1. When is a Special Meeting going to be called to dissolve the current committee? I believe management from the RSL have contracts which will need to be finalised and we as the members need to know what is involved as it comes out the balance of funds. 2. Who is to be managing the Glasshouse Bowls Club and under what committee? I think it is time for the members to appoint the Committee. 3. Under what Trust Account is the money that is in the bank going to sit in, as it does not all belong to the Glasshouse Bowls Club? 4. We were told that all of furniture etc in the Beerwah RSL is going to be placed in storage; I would imagine that storing poker machines would require 24 hour surveillance. Who is paying for the storage? The members of the Club need to be advised of what is happening in all of these circumstances and to the costs. 5. Do we really know how the bowls club people feel about all of this? 6. Have these so called plans for extensions to the bowls club, been lodged to council? I hear yes, then I hear no, or is it going to happen and once again we will not be advised of anything and how it is going to be paid for etc? We deserve the answers to the above questions and more prior to the close of business on April 9 or I declare that the members call a meeting themselves to request an audit. We have been kept in the dark too long about matters that concern us and it looks like it is continuing. Name supplied Glass House Mountains
of the Beerwah RSL Club. This is fine under the club’s constitution and is to be achieved by the members of the Beerwah RSL voting them in. The AGM was held on November 30, 2010 at the Glass House Mountains Hall. I was there along with 80 members when the meeting started and I thought all positions would have been declared open and then the members would get the opportunity to vote on who they wanted on the committee – both from the Club and the Sub-Branch. However this was not to be. All of a sudden we were all introduced to the new committee for 2011. Apparently the voting was done at the Beerwah RSL by proxy voting, and I was told that the announcement was in the paper of what was happening. This just shows how cagey it has all been. Every member of the club should have received a letter advising them accordingly of what was going to happen at the AGM, not the Management Committee and its partners coercing other people on who to vote for. I have never been to an AGM that operated like that. I would question whether or not there is a conflict of interest for Club staff or their family to be on the Management committee? Name supplied Glass House Mountains
Quote of the week
Cagey AGM
In regards to the Beerwah RSL Club members needing to be told what the problem is, I hope the following will shed some further light. The Sub-Branch wanted six of their members to be elected onto the Management Committee “The new cross is 15 kilograms and three inches thick so I thought it would be fine and installed it on Wednesday only to find it demolished the following morning on Thursday.” “This time it has just been pushed over as it was too hard to pull out or snap,” said Jenny. “I have been told that there was a vehicle seen there on the Thursday morning of March 24, after 9.30am and before 12.30pm. I am hoping that someone else has more information and can help me to find out why. I would be happy to reconsider not putting the cross up if for some reason it is upsetting someone so much. If this is the case I would like them to write and let me know why.” (A letter or email can be sent via Glasshouse Country News - PO Box 99, Beerwah or editorial@gcnews.com.au)

From Anna Grosskreutz Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Ph: 5420 8987
Glass House IGA Development At last week’s council Planning and Strategy meeting the long awaited IGA Development for the township of Glass House Mountains was approved. The development will be situated near the Neighbourhood centre and Ryan Road. Mr and Mrs Luke and their planning team have worked hard with council planners to give the township an outstanding complex which in some components will have views to the mountains. The council has also been working with the applicants around the place making streetscape projects to intertwine the development and the streetscape. We also worked with the Neighbourhood Centre to ensure it works well with the upgrade of Ryan Street and also how the development fits in with Uniting Park. Pathways and pedestrian linkages have been conditioned. Just short of five years in the council I understand many locals thought it would never happen. I know it was one of the most requested updates to both myself and my office. Significant land near Steve Irwin Way has been allocated to the State Governments upgraded plans for the duplication and widening of Steve Irwin Way into the future. A vegetation buffer has been requested along the alignment for screening. The development has significant parking in excess of what was required. This parking will add to the shortfall within the township area.
Graffiti and Vandalism in Beerwah In recent times there has been an increased level of graffiti and vandalism in the township area. This type of behaviour leaves most residents shaking their heads and it is costly to business and council to fix. Apart from the visual element which detracts from our region I wonder where the people who carry out these deeds live? If anyone sees anything suspicious would you please call our Police so that we can stamp this out before it escalates. A number of local builders have had their sites vandalised and these tradies are trying to earn a living and work hard. Let’s keep our Neighbourhood Watch eyes more alert than usual as we work together to stamp out this unwanted behaviour.

Public Transport Levy Initiative
– Beerwah to Landsborough to Maleny Bus Service Trail – period ended March 18. Data has revealed that a significant patronage increase has been recorded. Indications are that patronage has doubled since the initiative commenced. Initial indications are that there was a measureable passenger increase during the free travel holiday bus period. I am delighted with this outcome, please keep on using these services, I would hate to see us lose them.
Snapshot • • •

Hinterland Connect Service continues to grow very positively Go Card - Translink to meet with Main Roads Department to discuss allowing just one ticket to travel on buses / trains. Mooloolah - Flexilink is in danger of closing down because of lack of utilisation of the service. Please let me know (5441 8043) if the route or the days or times are not suitable. Eudlo to be considered in the next round. Woombye - I’m seeking feedback on the number of residents living in Woombye that would like to catch the Council Cab from home (Woombye area) into Woombye CBD and not Nambour, as is on offer now. 100 new shelters across the region to be rolled out before June with 40 new ones in the next financial year. The FREE holiday bus was very well used and will continue into the next financial year - 3.5 increase from last year.

Food for thought Alongside the rapid changes in technology over the past 100 years have been rapid changes in our food and eating habits. We have changed the way we eat more in the past century than we have in the thousands of years combined since the creation of man. Arguably, the changes in technology have been mostly good. Undebatable however, the changes in our eating habits have been horrific. For the first time in the history of man, the life expectancy of our children is shorter than that of parents. Easier put, life expectancy is decreasing! The rates of all degenerative diseases in this country are increasing. We now have more cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, arthritis, and digestive disorders than ever before. How can this be true? We have so many developments in medicine, drugs, and surgeries.
How are we possibly getting sicker? The answer is quite simple. There is no drug or surgery that will cure eating unhealthy food. No drug will ever replace the nutrient deficiencies in our diets, nor is there a drug that will decrease the amount of refined sugars and saturated fats going into our mouths. Sure, modern medicine will treat our bodies after they have broken down due to poor diet, lack of exercise, and increased stress levels. But that won’t keep you healthy. Our life expectancy is decreasing with this lifestyle. Natural health is no longer optional; it’s become a matter of survival! Our last line of defence is to educate ourselves, really educate ourselves on healthy eating. There is no magic bullet that will allow you to eat whatever trash you want and retain your health. It isn’t out there, and never will be. Look to the library for healthy eating books, or a quick internet search. Knowledge and the application of that knowledge is the only magic bullet we have.

High profile speakers fire up youth discussion
Youth Dialectic is an exciting new forum for Sunshine Coast youth to speak their minds about current social issues. In the coming months young participants will have the chance to discuss their views with high profile experts relating to the topics of sustainability versus social equality and youth rights. The Tuesday, April 12, Youth Dialectic discussion will centre around the question ‘What should
come first, social equality or environmental sustainability?’ Guest speakers will be Executive Officer of Sunshine Coast Environment Council Mr Wiebe ter Bals, and University Academic Dr Elizabeth Eddy, lecturer in environmental and social justice. The following discussion, Tuesday, May 10, should prove just as exciting for Youth Dialectic participants as Dr Bob Jacobs, Child Psychologist, Trainer Lawyer, popular author, and host of 90’s US television show ‘Parenting with Dr Bob’ will open discussion on the topic ‘What is the place of young people in society; should we have more rights and fewer restrictions?’ Youth Dialectic is open to all young people including high school, university, and TAFE students, as well as young people who are not in formal education. Discussions will take place on the second Tuesday of every month, 4.30pm at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s ‘UniClub’ building. Please email SCYouthDialectic@gmail.com with your questions.
Become a Golden Guru
Golden Gurus provides mature age Australians (aged 50 years and over) with a range of opportunities to support community organisations and small businesses. There are opportunities for mature age people to take on a skilled volunteering role. This role could involve helping a community organisation to grow or helping a community organisation deliver support to others (for example, by transferring skills and experience to people with a disability, young people, Indigenous Australians or people experiencing challenges in life). There are also opportunities for appropriately skilled mature age people to take on a small business mentoring role. This role could include supporting a new small business owner, who has completed the Government’s New Enterprise Incentive Scheme. The Scheme helps unemployed people to set up their own small business. Through Golden Gurus, mature age Australians are able to meet new people, develop social networks, access free training, and participate in an Ambassadors program. The program aims to harness the skills and experience of Australians aged 50 years and over to help meet future skill needs, address current skill shortages and respond to the challenges of an ageing workforce. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful initiative, please email us at vscgoldengurus@volunteeringsc.org.au

Watching the news on TV is usually quite sobering, but at the moment it is obvious that there is a lot of crazy stuff going on around the world. It is easy to feel overwhelmed and anxious. I want to talk about something positive we can do, but first here is a story… About eight years ago, I was in church and the pastor used a physical illustration which I thought was pretty cool. He had a sand pit on the floor and placed one of those extra large matches in the middle of the sand – with the red ignition part sticking up. He spoke of how when the world gets really dark and lots of things are going wrong how ‘good’ shines so brightly. It’s like when you are in a pitch black room and you light one little match – the whole room lights up. My pastor lit that match in the sand and we watched it burn as he talked. Next, he pulled out a bunch of about 20 matches and strapped them together with rubber bands. Our eyes lit up with anticipation. He then placed

this bundle in the sand-pit where the single match had been. He spoke of how it is when we help each other and ‘do good’ together that it has a much bigger impact than if we are doing life on our own. After a safety message for the kids he carefully lit the bundle of matches and stepped back… a brilliant burst of light took hold of the bundle and we were all mesmerised by it. He said that it is kind of like this when we work together – a greater impact, and people notice. Remember how cool it was to see on the news images of all those volunteers travelling to Brisbane to help after the floods – they were standing in long lines with their brooms, shovels and gumboots – they were happy to help. Helping each other through the tough patches of life is so important for our society. Let’s not get selfish, we need each other. Check out in a bible – Matthew 5 verse 14-16.

What’s next for Queensland’s economy? South East Queensland business and property movers and shakers will discuss what’s next for the economy at a special luncheon on the Gold Coast next week. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has gathered together real estate principals, business owners, economists and developers to learn about the big issues facing the Queensland economy from one of Australia’s key economic analysts. Westpac managing director and global head of economics and research Bill Evans will outline what the spate of recent natural disasters means for the Queensland economy in the months ahead.

“Post-floods we will have stimulus entering the economy during the rebuilding process. Queensland’s economic growth rate is likely to be higher this year (with the stimulus) than it would have been otherwise,” he said. “Other positive impacts include the global demand for LNG, which is likely to be increasingly strong. Also there seems to be an increased tendency to use fly in/fly out workers from Brisbane which spreads the benefits from these mining areas.” Mr Evans said the interaction between the mining boom, the rebuilding process, and the ongoing

shortages of labour were important considerations in the months ahead. However the risk of an imbalance in the economy remained while the property and tourism markets remained subdued. REIQ chairman Pamela Bennett said the property market was likely to improve towards the end of 2011 as the positive effects from the resources sector and the rebuilding stimulus flowed into the market. “Interest rates also look like they will be steady for a number of months, which will give many buyers and sellers the confidence they need to go ahead with their property plans,” she said.

Strawberry Patch Overhaul Last year I planted a mass of sweet strawberries, and while there tends to be a heap of information on how to plant strawberries, there is not a lot on how to maintain your existing strawberry patch. It became obvious that, once you ask around, everyone has their unique way of going about it. Strawberries are technically a perennial so they should live for a few years producing fruit. However, around the third year the plants can become more susceptible to disease and should be removed. It is advisable to start a new patch with excess runners each year. Generally speaking, the first year that you plant strawberries they can be small and some gardeners advocate that the flowers should be removed during this year so that they are better the next year. I’m not that keen on missing out on strawberries and happily let them grow and pick them as they come. The second year is when strawberries come into full production and you can look forward to mass amounts of succulent berries. However, some good maintenance can greatly influence this result, and now is the time to be doing it. So what to do first? It’s time to hack and tame the patch. It sounds drastic and well it looks pretty bad too, but it’s necessary to reduce the potential for disease and to get maximum production. To do this, I got out the hedge trimmers, and if you think that is extreme, my husband suggested the whipper snipper and I have read that people use their mowers! Once all the mature leaves have been chopped of, all these, along with any dead leaves and stems, need to be removed. Now my husband’s advice on this next step was quite practical and

worth passing on. To get rid of all the remaining bits and pieces I did as my hubby suggested and whipped out the blower and blasted them out of the patch. Any runners and plants that were too close together I removed and planted up in my new strawberry patch which I prepared by simply digging in lots of mushroom compost and manure and making mounded rows. Keep in mind too, that strawberries are a great plant for kids to have a go at. If you have masses of runners, get the kids to pot them up as presents or if they are entrepreneurs, let them make some pocket money and sell them. As a trial, this year I have decided to lay black plastic between some rows to reduce weeds and to see how these strawberries grow in comparison to my mulched area. The whole area got a good feed with manure too, which should provide enough nutrients until the plants start flowering. Finally, I watered the whole area with Natrakelp, a liquid seaweed, to hopefully reduce the shock I have just given my strawberries with their dramatic trim and add some readily available nutrients to the soil. In the future, all you will need to do is just sprinkle some dynamic lifter around when the plants start flowering and keep the moisture up by watering around the base of the plant without wetting the leaves and fruit. As you can see from the photos, my strawberry patch doesn’t look so crash hot now, but I am assured I will be very happy come harvest time. I shall keep you posted. Until next time in Get Up and Grow…
Recycling tyres at home Do you have a few tyres at home that the children may have left behind when they moved out? You can use tyres to build a rock feature in your garden or as reinforcement around the garden pond. First you will need to pack the rims of the tyres with rubble to add strength to the tyre walls. When using them for the garden pond you will need to have them in place before you lay the waterproof membrane down. This will save you money on feature rocks. Use the feature rocks where you will see them, not covered, under the ground, or behind the liner. You can create lots of other different effects by using tyres in the garden. What about adding some height to that wasted corner in the garden to display plants? Fill tyres with rubble to add strength to the tyres and to stop them from slipping / collapsing. Use them as a base first and slowly build to the required height staggering the tyres and covering them with dirt and other garden rocks. Place plants suitable for rockeries all over the structure. Have a look at our rock wall at the Resource Recovery Centre Beerwah. Have you been looking after your worm farms? I had a customer come in the other day with some worms she found in her compost bin in a container. After looking at these large worms (more like large maggots) and after consultation with someone in the know, I was informed that these types of worms are a result of adding meat and dairy into the compost. Remember never to put dairy, meat, onions and citric into the compost. Recently the Nambour Garden Club (all 70 of them) paid a visit to our site. They had a great time going through our garden and facilities. If you are involved with a group and would like to have a site visit don’t hesitate to call the office on 5494 6798 to make an appointment. New word - Flestering: the art of dumpster diving. Ask us how you can save money when you bring items to the Resource Recovery Centre.

These Championships, being hosted in conjunction with Cycling Australia, Cycling Queensland and the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club will take place over the April 9 - 10 weekend. April 9 will also see the Championship Time Trials for all categories starting at 8.00am at Little Mountain. On April 10, the National Paracycling championships are being held on the Sunshine Coast at Glass House. The Sunday, April 10 Championships Road Race for all categories is at Glass House Mountains commencing at 8.00am. Sunshine Coast Paralympian Marayke Jonkers has been asked to compete by the handcycling head coach. Marayke says “it will be exciting to race alongside all the paralympic hopefuls and what an honour to have nationals right here on the coast!” Twenty nine year old Marayke is currently training for the triathlon worlds being held in September. She took up triathlon in September 2009 as a form of cross training and said she is always thrilled to have the chance to compete nationally or internationally. “I’d always thought triathlon was an awesome sport because I knew how hard I trained to

be competitive in one sport, so it would blow me away to think that people could be so good at three sports,” Jonkers said. “I’d been doing some hand cycling for cross training, so I thought that given I had two of the three disciplines under control – swimming and cycling – that I might as well make the leap and try triathlon.” Jonkers has since taken out successive medals overseas. Congratulations to Jhi Gillies on reaching his 100th Contributed by Kelly McCombe
Local lad Jhi Gillies, in his last year of junior football, has notched up 100 games playing for his Glasshouse Hinterland Australian Rules Club. On Sunday Jhi led his U16's team mates onto his home field through a guard of honour by the Under 14's . The boys got off to an excellent start in the fine conditions but then the rain started belting down, the conditions got wet and muddy and with a couple of team mates having to leave the field, the boys went down fighting with only a narrow two goal loss. Jhi started his playing career in 2004 in the U10's. He had since gone on to play in four grand finals with the club and was a member of the Premier sides in 2006 and 2008. This is a great achievement for Jhi reaching his 100 games as he missed a season in 2009. Jhi would very much like to top off his junior playing career by adding one more grand final appearance in September. We look forward to watching Jhi's flips for the remainder of the season. www.gcnews.com.au

Touch footy
One extremely hot Saturday morning late in February a group of U12 Glasshouse Touch Football players headed up to Hervey Bay to play at the Regional Touch Football carnival. With games played against seasoned veterans Hervey Bay Red, Hervey Bay Black and Noosa, (not to mention their incredibly early morning start) our boys and girls had to put in a huge effort. Unfortunately we didn’t win any of our games, but we gave our competitors a run for their money and learnt a lot of new skills. A huge congratulations to all the Glasshouse competitors who took part and a big thank you to Neil and Raquel who trained our teams!
