his week when I was writing the story that went with the front page photo, it got me thinking. What an awesome idea to find something that you really enjoy and get your name in the Guinness Book of World Records for doing it. I had always thought that you would need to do some sort of extreme sport / action or something from the highest point or at the fastest time possible – lawn bowls hadn’t crossed my mind. I admire Chris’ dedication to the task, and if he doesn’t crack it, not a problem because along the way he has also done good by raising funds for cancer. Go Chris!! Regards,

Dianne Hunt (A Grade Champ) and her identical twin sister Jenny Hobson (B Grade Champ) took to the rink to play a game with Chris Thomas who is currently one of two bowlers attempting the World Record for the most number of bowls clubs played in one year. Forty-three-year-old Christopher is combining his record attempt with fundraising for the Cancer Council in the fight against breast and prostate cancer. Following his father’s death from cancer last Christmas, he and his mum decided to go on a bit of a road trip in their caravan, while they were on the road Chris enjoyed playing bowls at clubs along the way. He then discovered that no-one had ever set a record for the most games played in a year or at the most clubs so he decided to take on the challenge not knowing at the time that another bowler, Frank Peniguel, started the exact same record back in January and had already amassed an amazing number of clubs. Frank started back in January so he is six months ahead of Chris. However, this at least is giving Chris a benchmark that he needs to meet to beat the record that Frank sets.

discussion. Over the coming weeks, a number of interested parties who have a particular concern in the debate will be presenting their points of view.
The Sunshine Coast Council and the previous Caloundra City Council both supported the Caloundra South development of a massive new urban conglomerate of 50,000 people which is larger than the Hervey Bay and Maryborough combined populations. The Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney and his Government appear to continue to want to designate increasing amounts of land for development well into the future while ignoring the infrastructure required to support even the present level of development. It is the ratepayers who bear the cost and the developers who gain the benefit. Anyone who has to regularly drive to Brisbane will realise that the highway is already at capacity, yet there are no plans for any upgrade. The other alternative is the railway which is antiquated, slow and inefficient. Again there are no plans, timetable or budget to improve this service. The CAMCOS corridor is still just a line on a map again without any budget or timeframe. Why is the Sunshine coast not supported by the State like the Gold Coast? When the Gold Coast had the same population of 330,000 as the present Sunshine Coast, plans were well advanced for the construction of the M1 Brisbane to Gold Coast highway which was completed in the late 1990s. At the same time, a new dedicated rail link to Helensvale was completed in 1996 with Nerang and Robina added in subsequent years. This route now has the largest inter-city commuter traffic in the country with 26,000 workers a day.
Neglected infrastructure The Gold Coast Rapid Transit (light rail) commenced 2011 with the first stage now complete. Despite the LNP having a political stranglehold on the Sunshine Coast, it continues to neglect basic infrastructure provision. Is it that the Gold Coast has a number of marginal seats that it manages to get the infrastructure while we miss out? The Halls Creek and Beerwah East Investigation areas are planned on a time frame of 30 years from now. Anyone who can look back 30 years will know that the world is a vastly different place now than it was then, as it will again in another 30 years. Even before the combined impacts of Caloundra South, Palmview (population the size of Gympie) and the redevelopment of Maroochy Town Centre are known, decision making to lock in continued growth and urban sprawl are being pushed onto us. What about our kid’s future I would like to think that my children have an opportunity to decide the sort of Sunshine Coast they want to live in. Stockland are the major beneficiary of any approval for Halls Creek and clearly have enormous power and influence in State Government decision making. Stockland’s Caloundra South development has already taken a 4km stretch of the inter-urban break and Halls Creek will continue the intrusion. Both Beerwah East and Halls Creek are fragile locations and once coloured in on a map for urban development, there is no turning back. State Government should listen to the community and the council that represents them and say no to development in Halls Creek.

Mal Brough proposal would save Steve Iwrin Way forest By Greg Brown Driving to work the other week, I was listening to the dulcet tones of our Federal Member, Mal Brough speaking with Karyn Wood from ABC Sunshine Coast 90.3 FM on a wide range of local topics. One matter which pricked my ears involved the contentious Steve Irwin Way-Caloundra RoadBruce Highway interchange. The Member for Fisher, in response to a question from a listener about the infrastructure proposed as part of the Caloundra South urban development, has opened a window of opportunity which could see a resolution to a significant issue of concern for many in our local community. As part of his response, Mal has put the cat amongst the pigeons, flagging an idea for bringing forward the construction of an arterial thoroughfare to join Caloundra Road with the new $80 million Bells Creek Road interchange. “We’re looking at having to spend over $200 million at the highway interchange for Caloundra, realigning it, putting in bigger on-ramps and offramps, but what would be the implication if the State Government was to work with Caloundra South and connect the on ramp that now exists at Bells Creek through to just east of the racecourse at Corbould Park,” Mal said. This new road – to join onto the Caloundra Road-Kawana Way roundabout – is currently planned to be constructed by the land developer Stockland, but not for many years into the future. “Would that relieve a lot of the congestion down around the Caloundra exit? “Yes you’d be contributing to something that would be helping a developer, but given that it would give a quicker access to Caloundra from Brisbane it could have a multiplier effect and I think we have to think outside the circle,” commented Mal. We contacted Mal to confirm if his thoughts were really that the Steve Irwin Way interchange redevelopment – which would see the clearing of
North Coast Law
North Coast Law is pleased to introduce their new solicitor Tracey Taylor to the team. Tracey completed her studies in Brisbane, graduating in December last year. Fresh out of law school, she is energised and enthusiastic about commencing her legal career with the company. She has been working with the practice since earlier this year and is available for all general legal work. She is particularly interested in wills and estate planning, though looks forward to best assisting clients with their legal needs across the board. Joining a well established business with three busy hinterland offices, Tracey is gaining extensive knowledge from her colleagues. Alan Taylor, the company founder, has been running the practice for over 20 years. Established in 1991 from the original Palmwoods office, the company has successfully expanded to include offices at Landsborough and further north at Pomona. Bringing a modern and commercial approach to legal work on the coast, Alan is dedicated to
Photo courtesy of ABC Radio, Sunshine Coast 25 hectares of high quality native forest and the dislocation of the Mooloolah Cemetery, Daisy’s Place and Aussie World from direct access off a main thoroughfare – may not necessarily need to proceed in such a massive manner. Mal’s response was that it definitely was his intention, and he would like to look at the options. “I’m more than happy to help pursue the issue with the State Government and with Stockland, if it is something that the community want me to do as their local Federal Member,” said Mal. “But I’d like to hear what the locals think … do they feel that State Government should review their decision to build the Steve Irwin Way interchange, if a solution can be found which resolves the traffic issues, reduces the forest clearing, saves money by not building the interchange and delivers new infrastructure which creates local jobs and the associated flow on effects?” His idea has a lot of merit and he deserves to be given our encouragement to follow it through. To this end, we should let Mal know – through his Facebook page (use #tellMal), sending him an email or letter of support, or by calling his office – that we support him in ‘having a go’. People power has a potent effect in politics, and the more Mal knows that we’re behind him, the more momentum he will have. And it wouldn’t hurt if we let the State Member – Mark McArdle – also know that we think Mal’s idea deserves his support as well. providing approachable advice based on his extensive experience in family law, litigation, wills, estates, and commercial and property matters. Jeff Conroy, who is a co-founder, started with the establishment of the Landsborough office in 1996 and is an authority on personal injury legalities. Also part of the friendly team is practice manager Jo Stapleton, who has been at the Landsborough office since 1998. Jo handles the majority of conveyance work with the assistance of new recruit and receptionist Mahalia Bronson. The firm offers extensive conveyancing services from contract to settlement for all types of property – both residential and commercial. Bringing local knowledge and experience, as well as being able to service the whole of the Sunshine Coast and hinterland, North Coast Law offers good-value informed advice in all legal matters. $15 million spent for safer access By Lea Parkes
Residents of Palmview and Glenview and visitors to Aussie World, who for years have relied on a very basic access lane onto the northbound lane of the Bruce Highway, will be impressed with the transformation from the Frizzo Road and Sippy Creek Road upgrade. Last Thursday, Member for Fisher Mal Brough MP officially opened the $15 million upgraded section of road which runs parallel to the Bruce Highway, near the Aussie World precinct on the western side of the northbound lanes. Mr Brough said the safety improvement works at Palmview were completed on time and on budget, which helped minimise disruptions for commuters and businesses trading in the area. “Works at Palmview have included upgrading the previous Frizzo Road northbound entry ramp to the highway and building a new 1.3 kilometre two-lane road to connect Frizzo Road with Sippy Creek Road,” Mr Brough said. “This project has allowed for the closure of the dangerous Bruce Highway and Sippy Creek Road intersection, a notorious crash site for drivers over the last two decades. “Along with safety gains, drivers will also benefit from better connectivity with a new bridge over Sippy Creek.”
Tracey, Jo and Mahalia - your Landsborough team with both new and existing clients. Whilst being primarily based at the Landsborough office, Tracey will also be available to see clients at the Palmwoods office. Tracey can be contacted at the Landsborough office on 5494 8544.

Roll out the barrels! A material change of use application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to change the zoning of a parcel of land at Glenview to allow for a massive recreational water park to be built, which would include not only Australia’s first surfing wave pool, but one of the largest in the world. The 24 hectare Steve Irwin Way block, situated to the east of the BP service station and opposite the Holcim sand quarry, is currently zoned for rural purposes and is being used for horse grazing and machinery storage. The application to change the land zoning from Rural to Tourism has been made by Sunshine Park Pty Ltd – a consortium company created specifically for the project, and is the first step in their plans to build what will be known as the ‘Sunshine Coast Waterpark’. Their proposal is to construct a tourist attraction and resort complex, accommodating a multi-pool and waterway facility, function centre, themed restaurants, cafés and retail shops, and a resort of 200 units within a hotel complex and a holiday village. Apart from the water play, water slide, swimming and wave pool areas, the recreational facilities will include an adventure trail, canoeing, bush walking, pony rides and game zones. The $90 million construction project is forecast to create 430 jobs during construction and 250 positions when it operates. The direct and indirect economic benefit during construction will be approximately $30-40 million to the region and nearly $12 million per

year when the park is fully operational. The application is supported by letters of support from a range of major tourism players, including Australia Zoo, The Big Kart Track, Sunshine Coast Destination and Surfing Australia. After an extensive evaluation process, the application documents submitted to Council say that the site is ideal for the development proposed. Although the land does not have mains water connection, the proposal is to connect into an existing water main which is 2km away along the Mooloolah Connection Road. The facility will use 85 megalitres (or 85 million litres) of water a year when operational, however a considerable amount of rainfall will be collected and stored in tanks on-site. One issue they will have to contend with is noise from the proposed motor sports facility that the State Government is pushing to have constructed at Glenview. The water park will be surrounded by the motor bike tracks in the adjacent state forest. However, the proposal document states that they have had discussions with Minister Steve Dickson and he has indicated that a 500m buffer will be provided. If you’d like to read more about the water park proposal, GCNews has included a section on our website where you can look at many of the documents submitted as part of the material change of use – including a master plan, layouts, a promotional brochure, economics study and more. Have you ever stood amongst the crowd outside the Beerwah RSL at a dawn service as the day breaks, or along Beerwah Parade waving to those in the Anzac Day parade, proudly stepping out in time along their way? Well according to the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-branch, without a dramatic increase in patronage at the RSL club you may have done those things for the last time. And in future you may have to venture elsewhere to attend ceremonies of remembrance for Anzac Day and other significant events marking the importance that the role that members of the Army, Navy and Air Force have participated in. Club President, Gavin Smith said given the numerous financial, staffing and economic challenges the club has battled over the past three and a half years, permanently closing the doors may become a reality. “There will be some locals who may not be saddened by this outcome. However I believe it is time for community members to put aside past hurts and realise the value of the club and the importance of the role that the Sub-branch plays to the returned service personnel of our local area,” Gavin said. If the club was to close down, this may also be the end of the Drop-In Centre and the welfare and pension services that the Sub-branch provide for its 150 ex-military members and the additional services they provide and contribute
to numerous other returned servicemen and women who live in our community. “The RSL, like all clubs across the country, has been severely impacted in the tough financial challenges of the past few years, and although the state branch of the RSL is strong, they are not in a position to bail clubs out. “One idea that the Sub-branch had been working on as a solution - was establishing a temporary overnight stop for RV vehicles and to this end the majority of the work has been completed. “This initiative had the potential to bring a minimum $50,000 a year into the club as well as substantial funds into the wider Beerwah business community, which would have taken the pressure off,” Gavin explained. However the council has continued to drag their feet on the issue, and the Sub-branch feel like they have been thwarted at every turn dealing with the council officers. “The Sub-branch has made past decisions with one goal in mind and that was to be able to provide assistance and support for Returned Service Personnel,” he clarified. The club is calling on the entire community to make it a priority to support the club, by using its facilities, and guarantee its future.

There were quite a few locals who took up this year’s challenge, pushing themselves to their physical limits to fundraise for a very important cause – pretty inspiring stuff. One of those inspiring individuals is Glass House Mountains local Helen Skerman who’s shared some stories of her own, and her team mates, as they took on this physical and emotional journey. For Helen the journey actually started in 2013 when she was at the finish line of that year’s event to see a really good friend finish. Helen’s friend has had quite a difficult life journey and Helen reckons that she has used the Kokoda values of courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice to rise above those hard times. Just a few months later, Helen’s husband Howard sadly passed away very suddenly, and she was facing her own hard times. With her friend’s encouragement Helen registered her own team for 2014 and found that everything you go through to get to that start line really helped her to cope and gave her day-to-day life a very positive focus.

Crossing the line, L to R – Kerry Roach, Helen Skerman and Jason Marshall Many people describe the Kokoda Challenge as life changing and Helen said her mates who signed up for the trek have been a big part of that change. She describes them as positive, strong and caring individuals, even in the teams’s darkest hour when they had to leave team mate Mat at the 60km check point, Mat didn’t abandon his team but stayed on throughout the night helping with support and was there at the finish line 11 hours later, cheering them on. (Helen is confident that he will be back next year to conquer the event). The team had an official support crew of two, Leanne and Glen, who were their ‘angels’ providing the best physical care possible. Leanne went to a lot of trouble, even baking brownies and putting together lolly bags for them.

Glen put up and packed down the setup, fetched and carried, filled Camelbaks (backpack filled with fluids for keeping hydrated) and replaced batteries and things when they couldn’t get their fingers to work. However Helen said there were plenty of amazing people in their unofficial support teams. Each of the team members had their own group of family and friends who backed them in their preparation and undertook pretty practical tasks, as well as moral support and encouragement required to get them there and through the event.
“
Just a few months later, Helen’s husband Howard sadly passed away very suddenly, and she was facing her own hard times.
"My sister Kerry, was amazing, and my mum and dad were so into the whole thing,” said Helen. “They were very excited and asking questions, getting on the computer checking out the tracks the night before, and they provided plenty of fuss and attention in my recovery phase. “The number of text messages and Facebook posts we received was heart-warming from friends, more family and our wonderful kids. “My personal favourite photo of the whole weekend is the one taken by my sister of myself and her two boys, aged seven and nine at the finish line, one held my poles and the other my certificate and both looked pretty proud of their old auntie.

With support crew, L to R – Jason, Helen, Leanne, Glen, Kerry and Mat “The Kokoda Challenge Foundation does amazing work, the program they put the kids through is definitely life changing! “It was a privilege to walk some of the trek alongside some of those amazing young people and to know that our team’s participation has contributed in some way to a great cause. “Although the 2014 track was brutal and my mates and I were in a world of hurt those last 10km, we have certainly taken away more than we gave,” Helen said. Any Regrets? None. Will she ever forget it? Never. Will she do it again? Probably not, apparently she is too old for this stuff!

Community News Light Horse to lead the Grand Parade
In what will be a spectacular second appearance at the Beerwah Charity Sports on Saturday, August 23, a group comprising members of the Maleny and Caboolture Light Horse Troops will lead the grand parade. Come in and have a chat to them before the parade, and take a few moments to check out the display of Light Horse memorabilia. They have a proud and rich history. Have you started polishing up the car, the ute, the hot rod or the bike for entry into the ‘Show & Shine’ competition yet? Don’t forget that there are trophies awarded to the winners in 17 different categories and as all entrants will be judged, you’ve got a really good chance of winning one. Just drive into the sportsground on the day and register there and then. Registration for the competition is only $5.00 per car. For all day family fun and entertainment, be at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, August 23 – from 8.30am to 5.00pm. And remember, all the proceeds go to Cancer Council Queensland to support the amazing work they do. You can find us on Facebook or call Bruce Page on 5494 9557 for further information.
New monthly market for Glasshouse
Good news for all the local market lovers – a new monthly market ‘Hinterland Minimarket’ is being established at Glass House Mountains, initially to be held on the second Sunday of the month from 9.00am – 2.00pm. Glass House Mountains Hall will be their home and the first market day will be on August 10 and they already have a great group of stall holders who have booked their spots. The market is being organised by Kim and Tracey two local Glass House Mountain ladies who were keen to create a market that serves the need of the many home based businesses that operate locally. They are keen to focus on handmade, arts and craft, food and plant stalls. While these days many home based businesses often rely on the internet for sales, having the opportunity to display their products for potential customers allows them to feel, smell, try on and to see first-hand just what good quality their products are. The ladies are also keen to ensure that the market has a diverse mix of stalls and are hoping to limit any duplication of products. They are still looking for a coffee van, food stalls (excluding fruit and veggies) plants and face painting. For more information on becoming a stall holder at this new and exciting market, please contact the organisers on hinterlandminimarket@gmail. com or visit their website on www.hinterlandminimarket.weebly.com Find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/HinterlandMiniMarket
Become an adult literacy tutor and make a difference
Applications are now open for volunteers interested in enrolling in accredited training to become an adult literacy tutor at Sunshine Coast Council libraries. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said research shows that a large number of people in Australia cannot read newspapers, follow a recipe, make sense of timetables or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle. “Council offers free literacy programs for adults to assist them to become functionally literate by helping with reading, writing and basic computer skills. Volunteers play an important role in the success of these programs,” Cr McKay said. “We are now calling for volunteers who would like to complete a training course and in turn help community members improve their literacy skills and quality of life. “There are limited spaces on the course and applicants will be interviewed prior to commencing the training. “The volunteer literacy tutor training course will commence in mid-August and will include three hour training sessions each week for 12 weeks.” Head to Council’s library website to complete the volunteer tutor application form or phone 1300 LIBRARY (1300 542 727) for further information. www.gcnews.com.au
Campout for local Indigenous kids A call is out for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Glasshouse Country and Maleny areas to experience a campout weekend at Mimburi near Eumundi in August. Young people and their families will enjoy traditional cultural activities such as weaving, spear making, gunyah building, plant identification, interpretive walks, storytelling and star gazing. Campers will have the opportunity to connect with each other and participate in cultural experiences together. “The need to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous children is clear and our participation in this particular program is directed towards working alongside parents, children and other organisations in supporting their activity in this area,” said Auntie Beverly Hand from Mimburi Upper Mary Valley Aboriginal Association. The Mimburi Campout is a catered, alcohol and drug free event which includes a free bus to and from the camp with pick up and drop off points at Maleny and Beerwah State High Schools.
Students from Beerwah State High school Dana Coolwell, Kayla Moore, Chaska Coolwell The project is supported by the Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra and has been assisted through Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program. For more information please contact William Jeffries on 0406 631 139 or williamjeffries@ hotmail.com by Friday, August 8.
Festivities brewing for Glasshouse Country Festival A packed 10 day program of local arts, culture, heritage, environment, sport and more is in the making for the 2014 Glasshouse Country Festival (October 17 - 26). The ever popular steam train will be hitting the tracks again with carriage loads of visitors from Brisbane. Locals will also be able to take a ride, stopping in Glass House Mountains to hear about Indigenous and explorer history, Landsborough for the WW1 themed Landsborough Day festivities and Mooloolah for the Kid’s Market and more! Festival coordinator, Natasha Odgers, from the Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra (HCDAC), said there has been positive community spirit in planning the festival to celebrate the unique attributes of the local area. “Groups, businesses, schools and individuals are uniting their enthusiasm, creativity and skills across towns and throughout Glasshouse Country to make this festival something exciting for everyone to enjoy,” she said.
“The Glasshouse Country region has many unique qualities which can sometimes be undervalued or unrecognised. The community will be drawing on the qualities and beauty of the region as a natural stage to showcase and share local talents and interests,” said Natasha. During the 2013 Glasshouse Country Festival, over 5,000 people attended the 34 events which were hosted by 20 community organisations. The organisers hope for this year to be even better. Stay tuned for announcements of festival highlights and steam train ticket information over the coming few months. If you would like to volunteer, hold a stall or become a sponsor, please contact Natasha at hcdworker. natasha@gmail. com or 0418 720 515.

Buyer Beware!
Telemarketers are currently offering locals solar systems on the USA lease system. The local home owner or business is offered a no down payment system over a long term with fixed price electricity. The devil is in the detail. This is a great arrangement for the sales promoter but is not in the best interests of the home or business owner, because the term is too long. The sales promoter gets the benefit. Beware of anyone trying to sell you something which will be attached to your property but you DO NOT OWN. If is sounds too good to be true, then it probably is! The very very long term is beneficial NOT to you, but to the sales promoter. At All Energy HQ, YOU – the home owner or the business owner – gets ALL the benefit. Ours is a Queensland finance package with no fine print at all. All finance details are written in large type on the front page. We have a NO DOWN PAYMENT, 5 year leasing or chattel mortgage arrangement, with you TOTALLY OWNING the system and here is the difference … YOU GET ALL the benefit of the total electricity produced and the export earnings are ALL YOURS … not theirs. And in 5 years the solar system is totally yours, and YOUR POWER BILL IS FOREVER REDUCED. We do not hide behind a telephone from who knows where and telemarket. Our building is obvious. We are always up front and personal. We are an information centre, so ask us to clarify any energy question.

I love it all
Glass House Mountains Railway Station
Over 100 years ago the ‘Glass Mountains’ Railway Station looked very different than it does today. Crossing the tracks safely meant looking out for oncoming trains and should a train be approaching, Mrs Amanda Hare, the railway gatekeeper, would come out and close the heavy wooden gates to prevent horse-drawn and motorised vehicles from crossing. It is likely the gatekeeper also received the mail.
I would just like to show my support for the Simpson Street upgrade. I love all of it including those quirky statues. It is far more inviting than it was and I am happy to see my rates money being spent in the area I live in. The statues are great and it has got everyone talking which is a good thing. I also support the new shopping centre and cannot wait for it to open so I don't have to drive to Maroochydore, Kawana or Morayfield. I will still support my local stores and always will. I actually think it will increase their trade as more people will shop in the local area not taking their money out of the area. Kerri Knapp Landsborough
Any ideas?
On February 28, 1914, the Brisbane Courier reported: ‘Since 1891 the station at 44miles 15chains between Beerburrum and Beerwah on the North Coast Line has been known as Glass Mountains. In order to be historically correct the approval of the Governor in Council has been secured to rename the station Glass House Mountains’. It was argued the new name was consistent with the naming of the mountains by Captain James Cook in 1770. On Saturday, August 1, 1914, a wire was received by the Brisbane Courier from the Glass Mountains Telegraph Office – ‘Greetings. This is the first public telegram from here. The post and telegraph and postal note office was opened today, abolishing the receiving office’. Although the exact date has not been confirmed, it is believed the first Station Master was appointed to the new Glass House Mountains Station also in 1914. The Nambour Chronicle reported that Mr F Lonergan was appointed Station Master at the Eumundi Station in 1926, having been the Station Master at Glass House for 12 years. (i.e. 19141926) The report went on to say Mr Lonergan was given a wallet of notes from the residents of Glass House and Mrs Lonergan received a suitable presentation from the Ladies’ Sunshine Guild. It is also significant that the Glass House Mountains Post Office, located at the Railway Station in 1914, had been transferred from its original site at Bankfoot House on the BrisbaneGympie Cobb & Co Coach route. The Post Office remained at the Railway Station until 1925 when it was transferred to the store of Mr E Greaves, with Mr A Whitehead the Postmaster.
If you are interested in learning more about Bankfoot House and its occupants, please contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on ph 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@bankfoothouse.org. I have lived in Glass House Mountains for 10 years and having moved from Brisbane I relished the peace and quiet. However in the last two to three years I have become aware of a noise coming from the western side of the town. This noise is similar to the sound you might experience camping in a national park when someone has a generator running somewhere in the distance. While the noise is not overly loud, its constant vibration tends to become a real bother over time. The problem is whatever is making this sound runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week from around early April through to about late September. I would be interested to know exactly where this noise is coming from and if anybody else is affected by it. John Hulcombe Glass House Mountains
Use it or lose it
During April 2011, the RSL closed. The citizens club was given notice as they were trying to remove the RSL influence from the citizens club. It took eight months before the club was officially reopened. During this time the rates, insurance and mortgages still had to be paid. This period depleted finances considerably, from which the RSL has never recovered. The club now appears to be in the position that unless more people attend their premises, it may have to close. This will also include the ‘Drop In Centre’ which attends to service problems etc. Also where will Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, and other commemorative ceremonies be held in the future? There is always a very good turn up on these occasions, but most do not patronise the RSL at other times. I appreciate that times are hard, but whether the RSL closes could be in your hands. On Saturday, July 26 at Feed and Fodder, Beerwah we held a wonderful Pink and Purple fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation. We had over 100 people enjoying the cupcakes, face painting (thank you Miss Strawberry for volunteering your time), hot coffee, fairy floss and lots of yummy food. We have raised over $1400 ...YEAHHHHH. Our family truly appreciated the support and were overwhelmed by the generosity of our beautiful town, the businesses and the local people. Without their help and wonderful donations for our raffle, and Feed and Fodder allowing us to use their facilities, this wouldn’t have happened. Thank you Glasshouse Country News for your assistance in promoting the day. The LIVE.LOVE.RIDE shirts and accessories are always available on sale at Feed and Fodder, so we continue throughout the year to donate to the Kidney Foundation. These funds include raffle tickets sales sold at Feed and Fodder, Glasshouse Newsagency and Jessbow Beauty Studio as well as a donation tin at Beerwah Pharmacy and T-shirt / hat sales on the day, and donations made for face painting by Miss Strawberry. RE: Animal House Beerwah Closure
Five years ago we relocated to Beerwah, one of the first shops we needed was Animal House, since the first day we stepped into the store Andree has always been there with support, guidance and of course a new animal or three to take home. What made this shop so special was Andree's commitment to her clients. I recently watched Andree, (who I now consider to be a true friend) close her doors for the last time. Animal House had become such a special place for so many people. Andree and Barb thanks so much for everything, all the best for whatever the future holds. Jude Peachester

Mooloolah Forest and Motor Bike Tracks
Mooloolah Forest and motor bike tracks Nature watchers were hoping that the ecological values of the Mooloolah Forest would one day be recognised and restored to National Park status. Others were looking to motocross riding. There was no consultation before the latter was announced. Those of us with concerns about wildlife and ecology are left wondering; and according to Dr Glaister’s Letter, (GCNews, July 30) are ‘making false claims and spreading misinformation’. Without logical explanations we can only speculate and question. I would like to know why alternative sites for the motocross are ruled out. How does motor bike speed and noise match with a butterfly, or a skink? Or even a koala? How does it fit with bird watching? Let's hope the Ministers for Environment and National Parks consult and explain soon. Gillian Pechey Maleny www.gcnews.com.au
Search for ‘Australian Made’
I’ve always believed in supporting ‘Australian made’ when looking at supermarket grocery items, but the search is becoming the impossible dream. One example – according to the packaging, our toothpastes are made in Mexico, Thailand or the UK. Another, our personal soaps are made in India, Indonesia or Thailand. A recent ABC Landline program pointed to the fact that 75% of bacon sold in Australia is sourced from overseas pork. Because cooking and packaging occurs in Australia it is labelled ‘Australian Made’. As consumers are we all ok with this? It appears our governments are ok with it. At least with fresh fruit and vegetables, in season, we have the option of the Farmers’ Markets. Don’t get me started on the Americanisation of our language! Strike me pink! Thanks for doing the right thing
The Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue, would like to thank and congratulate the three young people who stayed with an injured koala until one of our rescuers arrived. At 8.00pm on Friday evening we were called to rescue a koala which had been hit by a four wheel driver who did not stop. Their actions allowed this koala reach the Australia Zoo Hospital very promptly, shortening his trauma time. We again thank you so much for your concern. Hollow promises
GNews on July 16 (page 3) shows a photograph of the Local Member and Minister for Transport, Scott Emerson. Our local bloke took his mate to the intersection of Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way and showed him the most dangerous intersection now, on the Steve Irwin Way. They visited, however, no mention of this real issue, only hollow promises. Did they not learn from the by-elections, firstly Redcliffe and second, Stafford? If I were them, I would be looking around for a new job; their future does not look good at all as far as I am concerned. Remember the election promises ‘I will make a difference’ ‘A real alternative choice’. All I can say is don't talk to the party faithful, talk to the community Mr Powell. To actually get the Minister for Transport here and no action, what a wasted exercise. It is our area, our problem and we get told, in our paper, that ‘If we…., When we….’ etc and that is where it lies, without either party taking the bit between his teeth. Our problem is real and the very likelihood of a fatal accident occurring on the doorstep to our Village of Glass House Mountains is REAL. I have said this before and I am saying it again. I vote and I live in the Glass House Country and I do care, I also drive vehicles and I do know what I am talking about, when seeing a real and present danger. The intersection of Reed Street and Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains is such, and requires Urgent attention today, not ‘if or when we get elected next year or in another four years’. I have previously spoken about the shocking and dangerous state of the Steve Irwin Way and that during rain, it is possibly the most dangerous road in South East Queensland. It requires re surfacing and for it to be done properly. Do it correctly and you can forget about it for 15 years, lives will also be saved. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

In response to Dr Glaister’s (DirectorGeneral, Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing) letter GCNews July 30
Dr Glaister’s letter includes a claim that his motivation for the proposed motorcycling facility in the Mooloolah logging area is to reduce the dangers and risks associated with current illegal riding in the Sunshine Coast’s national parks, state forest and other public land which places illegal riders, and the environment, at risk. There is no doubt that his motivation is well intended, however it is indeed remiss for him not to have mentioned the risks and dangers which illegal riders present for legal users such as walkers, runners and, in appropriately designated areas, mountain bike users. He makes the point that the Queensland Government is strongly committed to protecting, preserving and managing our protected areas. So it would seem that his claim that the Mooloolah site is environmentally appropriate obviously means that the site is not a ‘protected area’ by his definition. And it seems therefore that the environmental criteria in choosing a site had very little weighting. Having visited the Mooloolah site at the kind invitation of his Minister, evidence of it being a degraded area, as it has been previously described, was not there. He goes on to make a point that the facility will reduce the dangers and risks of illegal riding. His inference is that (some) illegal riders will use the purpose built facility in preference to where they now illegally operate. As the facility will be a commercial enterprise, and based on pricing models of other similar facilities in Queensland, one can assume that adults will pay in the vicinity $40.00 to $45.00 per day and under-18’s $20.00 to $30.00 per day. Regularly witnessing illegal riders in the Glass House Mountains area on a weekly basis, it is fair to estimate that the majority are over the age of 18. They usually operate in groups of four to 10+ riders. Walking through areas already degraded by them, it is a regular observation to find them continuing to operate in these areas. It is impossible to imagine that many, if any, will eagerly flock to pay their money to ride legally at the proposed facility instead. The question therefore is what resources are going to be put in place, in addition to those already existing, to ensure that the illegal riding which continues after the facility is opened, is stopped? School News Beerwah school students don PJs for a good cause Dedicated staff, families and students from Beerwah State School have raised an impressive $500.00 worth of donations for the Pyjama Foundation’s annual PJ Drive. It comes as Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle opened his doors during June and July as a collection point for people to donate PJ’s for children in foster care and called on local groups to dig deep to help those in need. Beerwah State School responded by holding a gold coin ‘Wear your PJ’s to school day.’
Tree Day Thanks The children at Landsborough Child Care Centre had a wonderful morning potting trees on Friday, July 25 to celebrate National Tree Day. We have been talking about the importance of trees and their impact in our lives and on our environment over the past few weeks. We would like to thank Suzanne from Toyota for organising Planet Ark Tree Day merchandise, Beerwah Recycle Centre for supplying pots, Kristy from Sunshine Coast Council for supplying some plants and Howard from Bunnings for donating
“The response we have had to this drive has been nothing short of amazing,” Mr McArdle said. “I congratulate and thank Beerwah State School for their generous donation and the overwhelming support we have received from the local community.” Beerwah State school principal Michelle McCabe said the school was happy to assist with the drive. “It really is such a great cause,” she said. Year 6 student Sampson said his principal had “great taste in onesies”, while fellow Year 6 student Chelsea said she was thrilled to be able to participate in the drive. “It was wonderful to be able to assist children in care,” she said. The Pyjama Foundation’s drive aims to provide a comfy pair of pyjamas for children who often go into foster care with next to nothing. Department of Communities statistics show for the year ending December 2013 there were 1098 children living in foster care in the North Coast region, and 8,556 for the whole of Queensland.
pots, plants and soil to pot our goodies. Each child took home a tree and the centre planted some to care for at day care. We planted approximately 50 trees on the day.
Not your average school day By Lea Parkes It’s not every day a big red helicopter lands on the school oval in front of the entire Junior School of Glasshouse Country Christian College. However, last Wednesday morning that is exactly what happened. No it wasn’t an emergency, but a highly planned and structured event, organised by the school parents and friends, to promote last Saturday’s Funfest. Initially the massive helicopter flew overhead and filmed the students who were seated in formation in the shape of the letters that read out GCCC Funfest. The helicopter then landed and the students had the chance to see it up close, and the School's principal even got to climb aboard. Bill McDonald from Channel 7 News spoke to the whole student group briefly and then led a

Doing Business Have you heard about Organic wines?
By Sonia Clark Did you know that Cellarbrations at Landsborough have one of the largest selections of organic, preservative free, organic in conversion and biodynamic wines on the Sunshine Coast? There are over 30 of these types of wines on offer, including a sparkling option. The range includes selections from established labels such as Paxton, Gardeners Ground, Wild Fox, Rosnay, Bibliotheque, Angove and Yalumba. Organic wines are certified in a stringent process that can take up to seven years to achieve and the grapes come from vineyards that are wholly pesticide and herbicide free. Organic in conversion refer to wines that are made following organic principles but have not finalised the official certification process. Preservative free wines have no additionally added preservatives (sulphites or preservative 220) and Biodynamic wines refer to a certified holistic process of wine making that incorporates principles of Biodynamic agriculture and relates to the growing, Selection of the range available at handling and processing of the fruit Cellarbrations Landsborough post-harvest. This involves principles of interrelated soil health, natural fertilisation, composting and biological diversity. Some of the benefits attributed to all these types of wines include minimal (preservative) sulphur dioxide intake. Although all wines have a natural preservative, without added sulphur dioxide / sulphites the resulting side effects are often minimised such as reduced headaches. Some customers who may have allergies to preservatives may benefit from preservative free wine, whilst those that are Vegan and Vegetarian friendly have wines that are also specifically available. As the ladies behind the counter say, “the wines are all made with love!” Coming up in September, Cellarbrations at Landsborough will be offering a month dedicated to the tasting of these wines. There will be different varieties to sample during the week and company wine reps visiting throughout the month on Friday afternoons from 4.00pm offering tastings and further information. During the month, and in conjunction with Kookaburra organics, customers will also get the chance to win a bumper hamper filled with a selection of organic goodies and organic / preservative free wines. Entry in the competition just requires customers to purchase a bottle from the selection during the month long promotion. Cellarbrations are open everyday from 10.00am until 7.00pm Sunday to Tuesday and from Wednesday until Saturday 10.00am until 8.00pm.
Business Buzz with Sonia Clark Beerwah RSL got a bit of national media coverage recently when Nat Tarrant appeared on the X Factor. When asked if he had ever played to such a huge audience Nat politely explained that he was more used to the Beerwah RSL audience! Surprisingly Redfoo wasn’t aware of this quality local venue! Nathaniel has been entertaining crowds up and down the east coast of Australia for almost 20 years, both as part of the family duo ‘Double or Nothin’ or performing solo under the ‘Boy Fierce’ moniker. Regularly performing in the past at the Beerwah RSL as a duo with his father Dave, the act has proven to be a firm favourite with local audiences with dad singing the golden oldies and Nat singing the best of current hits. Nat’s influences include the genres of pop and electronica and artists such as Lady Gaga and Scissor Sisters. Nathaniel’s song on X Factor can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=52CVlOQyLsQ There has been a lot of conversation about the health benefits of organic food. Craig and Leanda from The Healthy Guru want to help locals easily access farm fresh organic produce. As part of their holistic approach to assist in the wellbeing of their clients, Craig and Leanda are pleased to assist in promoting the local organic produce of Saddleback Mt Herbs and Veg. Run by a local couple, Mark and Diane, the farm is based at 787 Old Gympie Road, Elimbah. From the beginning of August, place an order with The Healthy Guru by Wednesday and Diane will deliver a mixed box of certified organic vegetables picked fresh on Friday morning and available for pick up in store from 2.00pm. All for just $25.00. Healthy Guru customers can now easily experience local and organic produce picked daily. For more information call 5439 0097 or check out http://www. thehealthyguru.com.au/the-guru-news/organicvegetables Ok so what is it with Mooloolah and the ‘Best on the Sunshine Coast’? Kenny’s, Mooloolah Meats and the Mooloolah IGA all took out their categories on the Mix FM radio’s competition. This week we hear that Mooloolah Valley Real Estate has also been given the nod. Sally from Mooloolah Valley Real Estate was so pleased for them to take out third place across the entire Sunshine Coast. As a small independent real estate, that is a pretty big rap, going up against many much bigger agencies right across the coast. Congratulations to Mooloolah Valley Real Estate, this confirms what the rest of the town already know – top job team!

Because we are committed to protecting our advertisers. The CAB audits our newspapers, magazines, websites and exhibitions to make sure advertisers are getting all of what they are paying so much for. Why would an advertiser risk paying too much for too little? Ask yourself this, what kind of media outlet wouldn’t want to be audited? As an advertiser, put your mind at rest, insist that you only use media that’s been CAB audited. Like this one.

Local Music Scene Music Today
Live & Local in August with Dr Micheal Whiticker
Micheal lives at Peachester and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner People working in the music industry have varied roles. I spend a lot of time doing studio recording and engineering jobs and much of it is simple editing work – cutting and moving around sound files. The work isn’t limited to editing music files as the same skills are required to work with spoken word files, whether it is for video, radio, theatre, gallery or CD projects. I have even done quite a few editing jobs for the Courts where, for example a recorded telephone conversation might need to be made more audible! Recently I have become involved with a project that encourages everyday Australians to tell their stories. We often hear about celebrity’s lives, some ‘warts-and-all’ truths, but generally heavily doctored tales - with more-or-less the truth involved...but rarely does the average Aussie get a guernsey! There are a lot of fascinating people out there, or perhaps they are just ‘average’ people who at different points in their lives have done interesting things? My work requires me to edit some of these stories, initially logging the entire recording – generally about 40 minutes in duration, then finding a series of clips or audio cuts - in total around three minutes in duration, which gives both a sense of the whole and a good ‘listen’. The three-minute sample is not intended to replace the original recording, which is for the person(s) being interviewed, but to act as a taster, giving others an insight into the person(s). Editing the spoken word is generally interesting work, but it is not always so. I remember once editing a 30 minute interview for a radio piece, and having to remove almost 100 ‘ums’. I wonder if the interviewee realised that they ‘ummed’ so much? Maybe they did but I’m sure that others who knew them would have been impressed at how well they expressed themselves after all the repetition of ideas, silences and ‘ums’ were removed. I’m being hard on the subject of course, very few of us are able to present our thoughts coherently in the heat of the moment when there is a lot of back and forth between participants. Making sense of a passionate rave is all in a day’s work for a sound engineer, and it couldn’t be more fun as a job! Have a musical month. www.michaelwhiticker.com.au

Constantly evolving creative spirit
By Sonia Clark Local Beerwah creative powerhouse, De GreerYindimincarlie will be one of the musical guests performing at this years’ Maleny Music Weekend. Proud of her strong Aboriginal heritage, De is an accomplished visual artist, singer, songwriter and performer from the Wiradjuri nation. De began her musical journey early in life. Originally she wanted to be a drummer in a band but at the age of around eight, expecting a drum kit for Christmas, she was instead given a guitar. Starting guitar lessons at an early age, her teacher insisted that she learn to play whilst also singing and so her skills as a singer and performer were established. De began writing songs in her mid-teens and enjoyed a multitude of diverse influences. Her career as a singer happened by default as she was often required to step up and sing when the bands that she played with fell short of a lead singer. Retiring from performing for a number of years to focus her energies on her graphic art and painting, De has returned to singing and performing as a further outlet for her constantly evolving creative spirit. “Creativity has always been a large part of what I have done,” she confirms. With a rich warm voice that portrays a diverse and eclectic wealth of influences, De says she “loves what she does” and has enjoyed performing with a number of different artists over the years. Some of the more well known names that De has played with include, Dan Sultan, Wolfmother, Kev Karmody, Archie Roach and Andrew Farris. Describing her song writing style as one that is “easy to listen to”, De has also been involved in composing music for various film scores and has produced albums for artists both locally and interstate. As a very adept guitarist, singer and songwriter, De is excited to be playing at the Maleny Music weekend. She will join over 70 other acts performing at the boutique local music festival that runs over three days from Friday, August 29 until Saturday, August 31 at the Maleny showgrounds. For your chance to win a pair of double tickets to the weekend see our competition in next week’s issue. www.gcnews.com.au

Happenings Out and About Broadway and Bling Recently the organisers of the Beerwah Charity Sports Day held a lovely evening of entertainment and fundraising, at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, to get the ball rolling on their big annual event. This year marks the 43rd year of the Beerwah Charity sports and most of the 130 or so guests on the night were all familiar with the wonderful event and were keen to support another successful year. Quite a few even dressed up to reflect the ‘Blingy’ them for the night.

Questions about university? Mark your diary for Sunday, August 17, for the 2014 Open Day at QUT's Caboolture campus. QUT will open its doors between 9.00am and 2.00pm, offering visitors the chance to see first-hand what is on offer to students who choose to study at the campus. Visitors can attend information seminars, talk to staff and students from all study areas, take a campus tour and soak up the vibrant campus atmosphere. Recent business graduate Kimberly Logan visited Open Day as a prospective student and this year will return to share her journey from university into the workforce. “Open Day was a chance to get all my questions answered,” she said. “Being able to talk to someone face to face about university helped me determine what path I wanted to take.” Prospective students can attend information sessions on business, creative industries, nursing, early childhood and primary education, as well as visit course information tents for all QUT study areas including law, science, and engineering. Information on getting into university, study costs and scholarships, student life and support for Indigenous Australians will also be available. Visit the QUT website for event details and program.

Glasshouse Country Carols
I’m delighted to report that Sunshine Coast Council will increase support for the Glasshouse Country Carols this year, after resolving to approach organisers of identified, high profile, established community Christmas Carol events to offer sponsorship arrangements. The carols event will continue to be delivered by Church on the Rise, with council as a major sponsor. It is a testament to the broad depth of the event’s program that Church on the Rise be selected to receive Council’s support of $10,000. It will continue to be supported by the community and is an important addition to the Festive Season calendar. Carols at Cotton Tree, Carols on Kings, Coolum’s Christmas in the Park and Nambour Community Carols will also benefit from council sponsorship. Council also promotes and supports more than 50 smaller community festive season events and provides funding through the Community Grants Festive Season category – so I would like to remind possible applicants that entries open August 1 and close September 15.
Beerburrum festival success
What a terrific day the recent Matthew Flinders Celebration Day – great weather, displays / stalls, crowds and atmosphere. Well done to the organisers and local community for being great hosts to the visitors.
Peachester Historical Society
It was my pleasure to be the guest speaker at a recent Peachester Historical society meeting. I was able to provide updates on a range of council heritage projects including the new Bankfoot House Archive Building and new exhibition projects at the Landsborough Museum and the Matthew Flinders Display at the Glasshouse Visitor and Interpretative Centre. In return, I learned a great deal from other speakers about the challenges to our dairy industry, past and present. It also reminded me how fortunate we are as a region to have groups of volunteers will to put in many years of dedication to help preserve our collective history.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Grants programs galore!
Three terrific council grants programs are now open for applications. Artists can apply for a Regional Arts Development Fund grant, which offers funding towards concept, skills and career development. While not-for-profit community organisations, with a project to benefit the Coast community, can apply for a Community Grant of up to $30,000. Applications are also open for Environment Levy Grants with up to $5,000 funding to help projects that make a positive and ongoing contribution to the region’s biodiversity and waterways. Visit Council’s website for further details.
Your pet, your responsibility
Council has just approved the draft Domestic Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Strategy 2014-2020 and you are invited to have your say. The strategy will act as a tool for promoting and enhancing responsible pet ownership, while informing the community about Council’s role and future priorities in animal management. Residents can provide input until 5.00pm, August 22 via Council’s website, libraries or customer service centres or email feedback directly to commdevelopment@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. The feedback provided will help to inform the final strategy which is expected to be presented to council for adoption in late 2014.
Chinese students gain insight into Coast lifestyle
I am a strong supporter and champion of developing ongoing formal relationships with our Sister City of Xiamen, so it was with much pleasure last week I hosted 27 Chinese students as part of a cultural exchange tour of our region. In addition to touring local Sunshine Coast schools, we picked delicious strawberries at Strawberry Fields in Palmview and coloured a 15m printed mural at the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens. This experience will stay with them forever. They will return home with positive memories and will become wonderful ambassadors for the Sunshine Coast. www.gcnews.com.au

Plant of the month
Mushrooms fuel the world To most of us, mushrooms are only important when we are cooking stroganoff. However, mushrooms are actually the fruiting bodies of organisms called fungi, which are one of the most important groups of organisms on the planet. Apart from eating them, we also use fungi (yeasts) to ferment grains for bread or fruits for wine. Without yeasts, we wouldn’t have marmite or vegemite! Important antibiotics, such as penicillin, are also isolated from fungi. One of the most important roles played by fungi is that of recycling. The main part of the fungal organism is the mycelium, a network of threads that live within the soil or wood on which the fungus sits. Certain fungi, called saprophytes, grow on dead organic material. Their mycelia produce enzymes that break down the material. Along with bacteria, fungi are responsible for most of the recycling of dead material back to the soil as nutrients. Without them, forests and bushland would be smothered under piles of dead plant and animal remains. Other types of fungi form beneficial mycorrhizal associations. The mycelia penetrate the tiny rootlets of plants, allowing plants to obtain moisture and nutrients, and the fungi to derive carbohydrates. Without these associations, 80–90 % of trees and grasses would not survive. However, current agricultural practices, such as tillage and the use of herbicides and fertilisers, can actually destroy the formation of mycorrhizae. So next time you cook stroganoff, take a moment to marvel at, and be thankful for, the humble mushroom!

Matthew Flinders Day Guided Walk
GMAN celebrated 25 years of environmental work with a guided walk along the new Soldier Settlers track which connects to the Trachyte Circuit. The photo has been taken on the new bridge funded jointly by GMAN and TRAQ (Trail Running Association of Qld). The work was carried out by National Parks who will continue to further upgrade the track. Seen here are some of the early morning walkers who enjoyed the two hour walk that finished at Beerburrum where the Matthew Flinders Day Festival was in full swing.

Jobs for the yard in August
• It’s a good time to prune and fertilise hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. • Don’t forget to water the veggie garden twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. • If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime. • Spray your mango tree with a copper based spray to fight anthracnose disease. • It’s not too late to plant a bed of potatoes. Use seed potatoes to minimise the risk of disease problems. • Prune your scrappy looking geraniums and use the cuttings to strike new plants. • If older leaves of citrus are going yellow, give them a dose of sulfate of ammonia. • Repot any cymbidium orchids that have been in the same pot for a couple of years immediately after they have finished flowering. • Apply a light application of a lawn fertiliser to give your lawns a small boost into spring. • This is a good time to clean out a water garden. Divide and repot waterlilies every year if they are in a container, every three years if they are on the bottom of the pond. Vegetables Plant carrot, lettuce, radish, beetroot, capsicum, celery, cucumber, eggplant, beans, potatoes, pumpkin, silverbeet, spring onion, tomato, zucchini, broccoli, asian vegetables, cabbage, peas, spinach, coriander, rocket and turnips. Flowers Plant marigold, bedding begonia, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, dianthus, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, portulaca, snapdragon, zinnia, cosmos, amaranthus, salvia, sunflower and statice.

‘The crowd that gathered around Jesus was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it, while the crowd stood on the shore. Jesus used parables to tell them many things…' Matthew Chapter 13 Verses 2, 3. Parables are stories, especially told by Jesus, to provide a vision of life, especially life in God’s kingdom. Parable means putting alongside for purposes of comparison and new understanding. Parables utilise pictures such as metaphors or similes and frequently extend them into a brief story to a point or disclosure. In other words, parables were ideal for teaching people about such things as God’s kingdom and the Messiah. How so? Many people expected God’s kingdom to be a worldly one that would make Israel ‘number one’ among the nations. So too, they expected the Messiah to be a worldly one who would wear a crown of gold, not a crown of thorns. Jesus had to correct these false ideas. This required tact.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Contributed by Monica Dangerfield With beautiful weather on our side, 74 ladies played a 4 person ambrose for trophies kindly donated by Margaret Zonka and Noelene Annalin. For the non-golfers out there, that means we had teams of 4, where everyone tees off, and we take the best ball of those 4 then everyone hits off from that spot all the way to the green, where we all get a chance to sink the putt. It is an interesting game to say the least, with some really good scores coming in at the end of the day. Our lucky winners on the day were Sonya Kenway, Liz Flavelle, Di Flint and Gail Murphy with a great score of 63 1/4 on a count back from unlucky runners up, also on the same score, Barb Whitfield, Sue Williamson, Sharon Phillips and Monica Dangerfield. The nearest the pins went to Karen Gannon on no 2, Leith Barnes on no 5, and Sonya Kenway on both no 16 and 18. Our course is in beautiful condition with the greens giving us all a challenge. Until next week when Jen returns, keep safe and keep smiling.
Peachester Inter-house Sports Day contributed by Andrea Balcombe Peachester P & C The Sports Day held at Skippy Park at the start of term saw Coochin and Stanley battle it out for school athletic supremacy. All the children had a go running relays and individually, teaming up for ball games and again individually at the field events. A beautiful sunny day made it a truly enjoyable day for all the parents and friends who came along to cheer them on. Once the scores were correlated Stanley in blue came out on top with a point score of 497 closely followed by Coochin in red with a 449 point score.

Super Strawberry 2014 Round 5
The Super Strawberry Competition has been held annually with the Beerwah Charity Sports since 1996, providing some light-hearted competition for farmers and gardeners and highlighting the local strawberry industry. The champion growers in 1996 were Julie and Nev Penshorn, with a strawberry weighing 150 grams. Since then results have varied with the seasons and the plant varieties. Some remarkable weights have been recorded, with the all-time champion grown by Shane Frizzo in 2006, weighing in at 245 grams. John Allen's Oaklands Farms have won the competition for the last two years, and they are leading the field again this year, winning all weekly rounds so far. Yes, they did it again in Round 5, with a strawberry weighing 135 grams. Round 6 closes Friday, August 9 at 4.00pm, but you can bring entries to the Coochin Creek Co-op any time during the week.
Local riders prepare to compete
By Lea Parkes Motorcycling Australia (MA) have six young riders who will represent Australia in the 2014 FIM Junior Motocross World Championship, to be held in Belgium on August 10. For the Lawrence family of Landsborough it is a bit of a family affair with brothers Hunter and Jett Lawrence taking two of those positions, Jett will be competing in the 65cc and Hunter in 125cc and their dad Darren is travelling with them to the event in Belgium. Jett starting riding at the age of four and was inspired by watching his brother, Hunter. Jett has been competing since he was seven and won back to back Australian titles in 2012 and 2013. Hunter started riding even younger – at the age of two, and has been competing from the age of six. Hunter has already won a Moto race at a previous FIM World Championships, and so knows what it will take to be successful in Belgium. Listening to the boys being interviewed on the ABC radio’s Grandstand show last Saturday it seems that there is some friendly sibling rivalry with younger brother Jett suggesting that one day he will take on his big brother and win, but for Hunter this seems nothing more than a dream for Jett and nothing he should worry about. No doubt the Glasshouse Country community wish the boys well and GCNews will report back on they went after the Championships are finalised. To find out more about the boys and their racing, check out their website – www.mxhunter.com www.gcnews.com.au

Biology exam Students in an advanced biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, name seven advantages of mother's milk? The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. However, he wrote: 1) It is perfect formula for the child. 2) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3) It is always the right temperature. 4) It is inexpensive. 5) It

bonds the child to mother, and vice versa. 6) It is always available as needed. And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote: 7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it. He got the 70 points...... Diane, Landsborough Week beginning 06/08/14
with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com LEO July 23 – August 22 The month of August commences a stream of planets moving from the shadow side into the bright light of day under the full Sun in Leo. This week could include a dramatic change in your look, or an improved self-confident version of your true personality. Your charms will be especially persuasive now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The emphasis for the first couple of weeks of August is into your confidential and private matters. You achieve the best success this month by seeking light on any obstacles to your progress. Generally you are in a self-reflective mood reviewing your work, making new successful plans. Finding inner courage. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Venus your ruler, starts the month of August in Cancer so you bring much appreciated caring into your public life. Especially to your partner!
