Hi Everyone
For most newspapers the big story of the edition gets the front cover – it is a little different here, we go for a great photo and often something quirky. And I have to say the staff at Bank of Queensland turning up to work in their PJs is definitely a little quirky. Not sure if I would be comfortable in adopting their look last Friday, but the cause they were promoting is one that is really important and that is getting sick kids out of hospital and back home into their own beds. And this week we do definitely have a couple of big, good news stories for the area – with Council allocating $3.5million on revamping the Beerwah Business Centre, the money to be spent over the next four years. As well as the announcement that the State Government will begin preliminary work on the upgrade of Steve Irwin Way from Bowen Road,
Glass House Mountains to Amy Drive. Both of these projects will make a huge difference to the local area, and while they won’t be completed for a number of years, at least things are underway. Council will soon be getting started on the community engagement component of the Beerwah project so they can establish how the town will end up looking – so we will keep you all up to date on how you can become involved. Regards,

Bankers in pyjamas Beerwah’s Bank of Queensland team donned their PJs to help launch ‘Banking on our Kids’, the children’s hospitals appeal aimed at getting sick Aussie kids back to their own beds. BOQ Beerwah owner-manager, Jeff Willis, said the appeal was unique in that one donation goes to help five different hospitals right around the country. “Money donated to Banking on our Kids goes to Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia (CHFA), which is a partnership of major children’s hospitals in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. So by donating once you’re actually helping sick and injured kids right around the country,” Jeff said. “And it’s not just the kids in capital cities you’re helping, either. More than 50 per cent of admissions at these hospitals over the past year were from kids in regional areas who have had to visit their capital city for treatment,” he said. “We think it’s a great appeal and are hoping to make 2011 our biggest year yet! In fact, if we can raise more than $275,000.00 around the country this year, we will have raised a total of $1,000,000 since launching the appeal in 2004! “The local community has always been extremely generous and compassionate, as well as being a great supporter of ours”. Jeff said it is such a worthy cause. “Sick kids in hospital aren’t just battling illnesses; they’re also

Beerwah set to come of age with $3.5 million funding package Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskruetz has delivered a major funding announcement for Beerwah which will further establish the town as an important centre for business in the region. Cr Grosskreutz said the Sunshine Coast Council will spend $3.5 million over the next four years to cement the town as a major business centre for the hinterland. Cr Grosskreutz made the announcement at a recent meeting of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce. Present were Chamber president, Kel McNamarra, executive committee members Patricia Shaw and Ursula Starkovsky, and members.
The funding, specifically for the Beerwah Master Plan, will give Beerwah its own unique identity. Cr Anna Grosskreutz said, “Today’s announcement of $3.5million dollars, which will be programmed into council’s budget over the next four years, will cement Beerwah as a major business centre for the hinterland.” “The project starts in the new financial year, with the first stage being an engagement program. “The program will seek business and community ideas for measures which will reflect both the history of the Beerwah township and our vision for its future. “The look and feel of the main streets are particularly important, as will be the open space areas, the places where people gather as a community. Cr Grosskreutz said a lot of hard work had already taken place to build the profile of Beerwah as a major centre. “I’ve been working alongside the State Government to help resolve traffic problems,” she said. “The completion of the $70 million open level crossing project and bypass roads was a coup which opened up the township’s main streets. “That breath of fresh air has helped to ease the congestion, which inhibited people from entering the town and stopping and shopping in the centre. “Now, with the easing of the traffic problems, it is time for Beerwah to come of age.” The Councillor said the announcement was council’s commitment to investing in Beerwah - specifically the placemaking component which will not only refresh and brighten up the centre, but also give it its own particular identity. “A new entrance statement into the township near the traffic lights on Steve Irwin Way is soon to be installed and will be part of the early phase of the placemaking project. The phase will also look into other signage connecting motorists and visitors with the town centre,” she said.

Future funding confirmed for Glass House Mountains intersection Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, has welcomed the news that funding has been allocated for the future upgrade of Steve Irwin Way between Bowen Road and Amy Drive. “This is something I have lobbied for since I announced my campaign for the seat of Glass House so to say I am thrilled is really putting it mildly. “As the local member since 2009, I have seen this community grow and prosper steadily in that time and have no doubt this upgrade will have an enormous positive impact on the lives of local residents. “The community has been concerned at the increase in small, yet significant accidents and also traffic congestion in this area over the past three years so this announcement is a step in the right direction,” Mr Powell stated. Funding for this project has been allocated under the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program 2011-12 to 2014-15. Local Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz has also expressed her excitement at this news. Cr Grosskreutz has also long campaigned for greater funding for this region. “This is a great announcement for the Glasshouse Country Region and in particular residents of the Glass House Mountains township. “The Sunshine Coast Council has invested heavily in tourism Infrastructure and placemaking for the township and it is important motorists soon have a safe entry/exit. “This intersection is the last on Steve Irwin Way to receive an upgrade and the State Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and I have worked alongside Government to bring the focus back to the intersection. “We recognise this significant contribution by the State and will continue to work together to bring the project’s completion before 2015,” Cr Anna commented. “This really is great news - the only way it could be better was if we could get it delivered sooner,” Mr Powell concluded.

Beerwah Club members making history Members of the former Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club were urged to be part of history when their club was reborn with a new name and new location on Tuesday last. Club spokesperson Sharon Bochow said RSL (Queensland Branch) issued a directive terminating Sharon Bochow in front of the Glasshouse the relationship and Country Bowls Club revoking the use of the letters RSL giving the members opportunity to vote on a new name and make a fresh beginning, after the club was forced to leave its former location at the Beerwah RSL Club. Ms Bochow explained it was “an historic and important step where they looked to as many members as possible to have their say on the future of their club.” “We have many members who remember being part of the clubs both in Beerwah and in Glass House in their early days.” She listed this as being their chance for the start of something new with the hope that in years to come it would be seen as a major milestone for the club. Club members were asked to choose between ‘Club Glasshouse’ or ‘Glasshouse Country Club’ with Ms Bochow predicting the spirit of the membership and the wider Glasshouse community would mean a bright future for the club. “We’re looking for a fresh start, with our Bowls members who have welcomed the members who once enjoyed the Beerwah premises,” Ms Bochow said. “A new name means a new beginning for our club.” As part of the Club’s moving on, renovations at the Club’s own premises, Glasshouse Country Bowls Club, were reported to be progressing well. Ms Bochow gave an update. “We’re doing extensive renovations to the kitchen area, as well as new dining facilities, and Keno will be running within two weeks and we are eagerly awaiting approval for the transfer of more poker machines. So the premises is coming together and the membership is strong.” As the meeting was held after GCNews went to print we will report on the Club’s new name, as decided at the meeting, in the July 13 edition.

A lifetime of musical memories Not many singers can say that Johnny O’Keefe helped start their musical career in Australia, but Landsborough resident, Ian B. MacLeod, can. Originally from Scotland and later living in England, he won a talent quest with his band before heading to Australia in 1959 when he was just 20. “I auditioned first at the ABC in Pitt Street, Sydney, walked in with my guitar, and Johnny O’Keefe said, ‘Can you play that thing’, and I said, yes. He said, ‘play something for me’,” Ian said. Afterwards Johnny told him he was going to be on Rockville Junction, a radio show, the following night. That led to television work that included Bandstand, Teen Time and the Ernie Sigley Show. Renowned as a Rockabilly Country Artist, Ian has released 25 albums during his career that has spanned five decades. The albums include tribute songs of artists he admires such as Carl Perkins and Slim Whitfield and songs he has written himself.
He has so many amazing achievement and memories. Highlights include meeting Frank Ifield, recording three duets with Lesley Gibb (the Bee Gees sister), receiving a personalised letter from Carl Perkins, singing with Carl’s son Stan Perkins, and meeting Slim Whitfield. He still performs around 100 shows a year and has travelled all over Australia and toured New Zealand, New Guinea and Europe. After half a century he still loves performing. “I love everything about it,” he said. “Going on stage, every time is like the first time. I don’t get nervous. I can’t wait to get on stage, plug in my guitar and rip out a song.” Last year multitalented Ian published ‘Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ a book of poems, songs and verse which includes a CD. “I wanted to offer fans something a little bit different. It’s a look into the last 50 years of my life - it gives people a bit of insight,” he said. If he wasn’t already busy enough, two years ago after a trip north, Ian was fascinated by the story

Savannah helps save the species Contribution by GC’s new work experience student, Cynthia Gardiner, from Meridan State College
Recently Australia Zoo released their new baby rhino into its enclosure, preparing for the opening of their Africa exhibit in September. Savannah, the rhino, weighed between 50 and 60kg when she was born, but now at two months, weighs a great 135kg and loves her life at the zoo. Savannah is a white rhino and unfortunately this species is endangered. At Australia Zoo, they strive to protect wildlife and are hoping for a brother or sister for Savannah to increase the number of the endangered species. Steve Irwin’s dream was to create an African Safari, where people can observe African animals while they roam in open plains and their enclosures. The African exhibit will be the largest enclosure at the zoo covering 24 acres, adding to the Zoo’s already established 70 acres. Once this exhibit is ready, it will be the only African Safari and the only place to see animals such as giraffes, rhinos, zebras and a cheetah in Queensland, and one of Steve Irwin’s dreams will have been achieved. Bookings are available to see the baby rhino before the African Safari opens. Otherwise the Safari park will be open to the public on September 17.

Footsteps of ‘Calamity’
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been a tiny bit of a musical theatre nerd. I guess I have my Mum and Dad to blame for this, as they are both musical lovers, though Dad will probably never admit to his love of Les Misérables. In this 21st century it seems that interest in musicals has had a huge resurgence. Television shows like Glee have made teenage girls fall in love with songs from Wicked, West Side Story and even The Rocky Horror Show. So when the College announced late last year that they were going to be presenting Calamity Jane in 2011 – I was ecstatic. After all, I’d seen the Doris Day/Howard Keel classic numerous times when I was younger and have known all the words to Secret Love since I was five. I willingly signed up, and eight months later here we are, with opening night three weeks away. You can probably feel my nervous/excited jitters from where you’re sitting, and I’m hoping that it’s just the adrenaline kicking in a few weeks early and not the fact that I have what feels like a million lines to learn. However, the five year old in me is as excited as ever to live out her dream of filling Doris Day’s shoes as Calamity Jane in this musical western, and hopes ever so hard that her tiny feet are big enough for this iconic role. If you want to find out more about Glasshouse Country Christian College’s production of Calamity Jane, being presented on July 22 and 23, check out our Facebook page – www. Morgan Winlaw and Nathan facebook.com/CalamityGCCC and be Jarvis as Calamity Jane and sure to make some noise! The folks in Wild Bill Hickok Deadwood would love to hear from ya!

Mooloolah Vet Surgery is turning one year old! They are having a free sausage sizzle and open day on Saturday, July 9 to celebrate. The open day and barbeque The Mooloolah Vet Team (Left to right): Nurse Jaqui, will commence around Dr Rob, Nurse Tamsin 12.30pm where there will be lucky door prizes for people and free hydrobath vouchers for existing clients as a thank you for the support over the last year. Since opening, Dr Rob Huston and his qualified vet nurses Jaqui and Tamsin have treated nearly one hundred animals affected by tick paralysis with a greater than 95 per cent success rate. It looks like this season will also be a bad one for ticks as Dr Rob says they are starting already. “The key to treating ticks is to get your pet to a vet early enough so they can be given treatment in time”. Dr Rob reports that quite a number of lost and stray dogs have been reunited with their owners through Mooloolah Vet. They also work with the WILVOs to assess, treat and rehabilitate injured wildlife. “I think many people in the district are happy to have a local vet again as it saves them fuel and time driving elsewhere, and our quality pet products have lower prices than most pet stores as well,” says Dr Rob. The team at Mooloolah Vet will be there to treat your animals if they become sick or injured but they need your support. Show your support at the open day and grab a free sausage. Mooloolah Vet Surgery is located at Shop 3/1, Mooloolah Connection Road, (Surgery is beside the produce store in Mooloolah). Telephone 5492 9510. Opening hours, Monday - Friday 8.30am - 5.30pm; Saturday, 8.30am - 12.30pm.

Mr Jakupek said the new store, located at 78-80 Simpson Street, Beerwah, will provide Beerwah customers with the chance to experience ALDI’s shopping innovations and high quality exclusive brands at permanently low prices. “The 2009 Supermarket survey conducted by Choice found that ALDI is 25 per cent cheaper than its competitors,” said Mr Jakupek. “In addition, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Grocery Inquiry confirmed ALDI’s presence has had a downward effect on grocery prices, delivering savings to consumers when there is an ALDI in their neighborhood. “We are the only major grocery retailer in Australia to list all products and prices online so consumers know the exact value they are getting when they shop at ALDI.” Mr Jakupek said, “There has been a lot of excitement leading up to the opening and our employees are gearing up for a busy day. ALDI sources 100 per cent of fresh meat, 97 per cent of dairy and 97 per cent of fruit and vegetables within Australia and the vast majority of its core range is Australian made.” “ALDI’s first Australian store opened in January 2001 and there are now over 250 stores along the east coast of Australia.” The new Beerwah store will be open Monday to Wednesday 8.30am – 7.00pm, Thursday 8.30am – 9.00pm, Friday 8.30am – 7pm, Saturday 8.00am – 5.00pm ALDI store will open soon in Beerwah and Sunday 9.00am – 6.00pm. www.gcnews.com.au

There’s a new deck connecting Beerwah library and community hall with Turner Park. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the project highlighted the importance of investing in infrastructure to link community facilities in order to provide easy access for all community members. Cr Grosskreutz worked with members of the community such as Bob McLean to improve general access between the facilities and to improve access during major events like the Beerwah Sustainability and Garden Expo. Mr McLean said, “The walkway is an absolute asset as it complements access between the community hall and Turner Park, so people can better utilise the walking tracks. It’s also an ideal place to have wedding photographs taken overlooking the lily pond.” Amanda Neideck, Beerwah Library Coordinator, said that while the deck was being built there was good feedback from the community who were looking forward to easier access from the library to the park. The new deck is made of galvanised steel and timber decking. The design features low voltage lighting that indicates a pathway to pedestrians using it at night. The deck was opened to the public on Friday, June 24.

On Tuesday, June 21, the Nambour North Coast Division of QCWA held their finals in the Peachester Hall. The hall was packed with the knitting and crochet displays, a credit to some very talented ladies. Karen McMahon, Bev Wild’s daughter, won first prize with her knitted toy. The floral art created a lot of attention with its colourful display. Coral Beutel won three firsts and five seconds. In cooking, Bev Wild won the lemon cake, Joan Kropp first with peach blossom, second rich fruit cake, Coral Beutel first with chocolate cake and orange bar, second with tomato relish and dried apricot jam. In photography Gordon Howitt received four firsts and three seconds. Coral Beutel would like to apologise - in her report last week she was remiss in not thanking the sponsors who donated the raffle prizes for Peachester CWA. We really appreciate their support. Thank you.
Super strawberry starts this week The Glasshouse Country Super Strawberry Competition is on again for 2011, with the first round closing this Friday, July 8. As in previous years, there will be eight rounds, with the weekly winner receiving a six-pack from the Beerwah Hotel. This year, growers are asked to present entries at Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers’ Co-op for weigh-in and display before 4.00pm each Friday. Please ask for David and he will look after you and your entry. Over the years there have been many impressive strawberries and some serious competition. In 2009, the winning fruit was grown by Peter Bower of Inchcolm Farms, and weighed in at 215 grams. The all-time champion grower throughout the fourteen years of the competition was Shane Frizzo in 2006, with an entry (pictured) weighing an incredible 245 grams. The Super Strawberry Competition runs in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival. The 2011 Champion will be announced at the sports day on Saturday, August 27 at Beerwah Sports Ground. This is the 40th Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, and as usual all proceeds will go to Cancer Council Queensland. For information about the Super Strawberry Competition or about the Charity Sports, please contact Bruce Page 5494 9557. www.gcnews.com.au

It has given me the confidence to go up to people I don’t even know and start talking to them about anything.’ ‘I have a video tape of myself at one of my first speeches. I was really awkward. The butterflies were swarming like killer bees inside. Not anymore.’ ‘Like everyone I know, I joined TM to get the rust out of my presentation skills. Leadership training was not on my agenda. But three weeks after joining, I was asked to run (unopposed) for VPE. “What’s that?’ I asked. “Vice President Education” was the reply. “Okay,” I said, “Vice Presidents never do anything”. I quickly learned differently.’ Would you like to talk about your experience in our Club, come along on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. We’d love to welcome you. Like to know more? Once every year each and every Rotary Club throughout the world celebrates ‘Changeover Night’. It is the end of a presidential year and it is the night where Rotarians who have done outstanding work are celebrated, the night where awards are given and the past year remembered. Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains might only be small in numbers, but huge in delivering services to the community and people in need, both locally and internationally. Outgoing President, George MacKenzie presented Rotarians John Kemp and Barry McQuay with the Paul Harris Fellow Award for their long standing dedication to the Rotary cause. Trish Cashin from Community Recycling was also a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award for her involvement and dedication to community and especially the Menshed Group, which was initiated by Rotarian Bob McLean. The Paul Harris Fellow is one of the highest awards that can be presented to worthy recipients. Paul Harris Fellow Award recipients

You Said It Phone tower - response
What's in the Spotlight QLD Garden Expo this weekend The Queensland Garden Expo is on this weekend, 8, 9 and 10 July at the Nambour showgrounds. With more than 360 exhibitors, plants for sale, demos and council's living backyard display, you won’t be disappointed. Visit www.qldgardenexpo.com.au for more.
Council delivers budget Council has announced a budget which delivers for the whole region. $189 million will be spent to provide better roads and bridges, improved town centres and rst-class community facilities. Responsible nancial management has kept the rate rise below ination at 3.5%. Key levies are unchanged and pensioner remissions and early payment discounts will continue.
In response to Mr Althaus, CEO Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (GC News 29/6/11), LACA Inc would like to point out the following: • There was no community consultation from anyone associated with the mobile phone tower proposed for 20 Tytherleigh Avenue, Landsborough. People whose property directly adjoined the tower site were sent a letter but no one else got one. People living on the opposite side of the street in Leach Avenue didn’t get one, so where was the community consultation? • The Sunshine Coast Council can only judge this application on the relevant town planning
Letters to the Editor Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words.
Buderim pool closed for maintenance The Buderim Aquatic Centre will be closed for maintenance until approximately Monday 11 July. Works include refurbishing the concrete joins on the main pool and painting and tiling the amenities. Council thanks the local swimming community for their patience at this time.
regulations and the relevant State or Federal regulations pertaining to communication towers and, as Mr Althaus must be aware, this tower does not comply with any of these. ie Council height regulations - does not comply; Council regulation pertaining to tourist routes - does not comply; Commonwealth Telecommunications Act - distance from a school - does not comply. What more do we need to know about this tower? • Why is Optus hiding behind their telecommunications association? Can’t they speak for themselves? A.Husband Secretary Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. Views expressed in the 'You said it' page are those of the writer - and not this publication. Please send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au or fax to 5494 6399.

Cassandra Smolenski, Beerwah “I think it’s a very good idea because it will make it less interesting for people, because smoking is definitely a killer. I think it’s a good idea to make it more bland. I think it will make a difference to people smoking. I hope so.” 2 Sara Perrott, Landsborough “I don’t think it’s very necessary because we always check the ID’s, and people over 18 can make the choice whether they smoke or not. Also people generally go for what’s cheapest not what the packaging is, they don’t really care what’s on it. I think people will still want to smoke.” 3 Stephen King, Nambour “It won’t make no difference. If people smoke they smoke, that’s it.” 4 Ivan Colledge, Landsborough “I don’t know that it would affect hardened smokers. It’s worth a try I think. Over the years the percentage of smokers has gradually gotten fewer and fewer.”
5
Elise Noble, Beerwah “I think it’s a personal choice if people wish to smoke or not and I don’t think changing anything to do with the packaging of cigarettes is going to make a difference. Or if people don’t want to smoke then they don’t have to look at them. I don’t see what the big deal is. I just think the Government needs to wake up. Stop trying to take away people’s rights and concentrate on more serious issues.”
6
Linda Gould, Mooloolaba Linda said she thinks the current packaging with the photos showing the effects of smoking is a better deterrent than plain packaging. “How will plain packaging deter anyone? The other ones are a sort of deterrent because even I’m thinking, do I really want to touch these? I think kids will be more encouraged to buy plain packaging because you can hide it from mum.” www.gcnews.com.au

Scenar Therapy – sets the scene for pain relief Hanna Brandli, Beerwah Scenar therapist, explains how Scenar works for peak performance and/or the rapid recovery from injury. Scenar is a bio-feedback, electrotherapy device about the size of a TV remote control – delivering electrical impulses through the skin in turn stimulating the nervous system to accelerate the body’s self healing and repair system. Hanna says that by booking in for a consultation, you will learn that “the most pronounced and immediate effect of a scenar treatment is pain relief! Independent research has shown, some patients found more pain relief after Scenar treatment than from administered opiates or morphine! Hanna indicates the benefit of Scenar is it is noninvasive, with dramatic reports of relief in every area from pain, arthritis, pinched nerve injury, immune disorders and rehabilitation from illness or surgery.

Over 3,000 chemicals are added to our food supply and more than 10,000 chemical solvents, emulsifiers and preservatives are used in food processing. Even non-processed foods such as fruit, vegetables, and meats are filled with pesticides, antibiotics, and laboratory created hormones. Other common sources of toxins are household cleaners, personal care products, plastics, dental amalgams, medications and vaccines, Teflon
Estimates show most people have somewhere between 400 and 800 chemicals stored in their bodies. When our body detects toxic substances that it can’t eliminate, a built-in defense mechanism stores them away in our fat cells, away from vital organs. (This is a suspected reason why some people have trouble losing weight. If they lose the fat, the built-up toxins would be released.) The real danger with toxins is they often go unnoticed until enough accumulate to cause a major problem. Studies have estimated between 75 and 95 per cent of cancers are linked to diet and environmental toxicity. Your body is fully equipped to detox itself naturally through the liver, kidneys, etc. The problem with today’s lifestyle is that the body simply can’t keep up with the toxic load placed on it.
In addition to a detox program, a detoxed lifestyle is essential. Exercise helps your body rid toxins naturally through your lymphatic system. Drinking at least 1.5 litres of water per day helps flush toxins through your cleansing organs. Avoid toxic emotions and stress, as they release toxic hormones into your body. Lastly, avoid processed foods and eat a clean, organic diet packed with natural enzymes. Be aware, detox programs should not be performed during pregnancy or while breast feeding. The released toxins can be harmful to a baby’s developing nervous system, and may cause side effects in adults such as headache, nausea, and change in bowel habits. Medications may also be affected, so check with your prescribing doctor before beginning. Beerwah Wellness Clinic, Beerwah Plaza. Ph: 5494 0499

I began my academic career in late 1993 teaching Composition, including creative music making, song writing and music arranging, and Music Technology, including music recording and production techniques. In the early 2000s I moved into management, production and directing roles. I established an owner-operated recording studio and small public address system (PA) company and began to produce and direct multi-media music events and festivals, and to run music workshops and facilitate courses in the community. In 2010, looking for a change, I resigned as Director of an event organisation company I had run for 5 years, moved to SE Queensland, and took up casual work with the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. I have a personal interest in and commitment to the furthering of music education and the community arts. I hope that this column, aimed at the reader with an interest in music, will provide interesting tips, discussions, stories, short interviews with local musicians, introductions to upcoming events, etc – all of which you will be able to enjoy!

As I will be writing a regular monthly column for the Glasshouse Country News on ‘music today’ in its many guises and how it may interest and involve you as (I am assuming) a music lover, I thought it sensible to begin by introducing myself. I am a professional musician who has moved into the Sunshine Coast area in the last year. I have a background which has covered most styles of music and includes working in tertiary education, the community and of course in working with my fellow professional musicians in the field as a composer, performer, a technologist (recording and PA sound systems engineer), producer, music facilitator, manager and director. Up to the mid 1990s I worked with music organizations such as the Australian Opera and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, dance and theatre companies and community arts organisations as a composer-in-residence or commissioned composer. I created new work in collaboration with artists in the communities in which I worked, mentored young musicians, developed music programs, and promoted contemporary music to the general public.

Budget 2011/2012
Council tender
Sunshine Coast Council’s responsible financial management has delivered a budget with record spending on roads, bridges, parks and community facilities. The 2011/12 budget was one aimed at providing a balance between delivery and affordability. We know people are doing it tough, which is why we’ve tried to keep the rates rise as low as possible. At 3.5 per cent the rate rise is below inflation – with ratepayers on the minimum general rate (70 per cent) the bottom line increase is 80 cents a week. Things that will stay the same include pension remissions will continue ($3.9 million), early payment discounts will stay ($8.3 million) and key levies will remain unchanged (environment, public transport, tourism and heritage). I was pleased to receive on behalf of my community over $14 million in capital works project funding. These projects recognise the time spent with key council project staff over the past year ensuring the southern region continues to prosper. Many of these projects will build on community aspirations for better community facilities, economic stimulus, tourism promotion, road safety, walkable town centres and family parks, sporting facilities, safe school parking and rural bridge replacement. I will continue to provide the details of these projects over the coming months, once timelines are finalised, and the works programmed.
Range Road, Peachester - gravel road sealing
Work will start this week along a 150 metre section of Range Road, Peachester. The planned upgrade section will increase safety by improving sight distance along the road. Work on Range Road will include: • cutting and filling of the existing road • reinstatement to a 5 metre wide sealed road • During construction, council will endeavour to avoid the disturbance of large and established trees. • Completion is anticipated within four weeks (weather permitting). Cr Anna is available for meetings, by appointment only, at her Beerwah office located in the BADYAC building, in the Beerwah Sportsground Complex on Roberts Road. Please call 5420 8987 to book a time.
I am pleased to advise that the following tender has been advertised: Beausangs Lane Bridge Substructure Replacement (Contract No. 1011041). Council uses an electronic tendering system. To obtain tender documents, please visit https://secure.publicworks.qld.gov.au/etender/home.do. First time users will need to register as a new supplier. To be notified of Council’s upcoming publicly advertised tenders, the Queensland Government recommends that you ‘Select All Categories’ under ‘Products/Services’.
Review of draft local laws
Pursuant to the Local Government Act 2009, council is required to consolidate its existing local laws and subordinate local laws. All existing local laws will expire automatically on December 31, 2011. Whilst much discussion in council surrounded ‘dogs in eating areas’, these local laws cover all aspects of our daily life. The local law consultation period commences on August 15 and runs until September 11, a period of four weeks. I urge all residents to obtain a copy and feed back your thoughts on the local laws. TAX TIME
2010 / 2011
Tax time 2011 is here With the end of the financial year here, Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo today reminded Australia’s 12.6 million taxpayers that tax time has begun. “Now is the time for people who prepare their own tax returns to start getting their tax affairs in order so that they can lodge them by the October 31 deadline. “The quickest and easiest way to lodge is online using ‘e-tax’, the ATO’s free lodgement service.” “E-tax is available to download free of charge from our website at www.ato.gov.au and is the popular choice for nearly 2.5 million people each year.” “As well as built-in checks, calculators and guides, e-tax gives you the option to prefill your return with information provided to the ATO by third parties including payment summaries, government payments such as pensions and allowances, bank interest and private health insurance details. “Government and third party information to pre-fill your return will be available to download
progressively from 1 July. You can subscribe to an alerts service within e-tax which will let you know when your personal information becomes available,” Mr D’Ascenzo said. Other ways to lodge Lodging with TaxPack TaxPack 2011 will be available from 1 July at ATO shopfronts, most newsagencies, online through the publication ordering system on the ATO website, and by calling our automated publication ordering service on 1300 720 092. Lodging over the phone If you have simple tax affairs you may be eligible to lodge your tax return over the phone. Simply complete the Short tax return 2011 and then lodge it by calling 13 28 65. Lodging through a registered tax agent If you are using a registered tax agent for the first time or using a different tax agent from last year, you need to contact them by October 31, 2011. Visit www.tpb.gov.au or call the Tax Practitioners Board on 1300 362 829 to check your tax agent is registered.
Newstart and Youth allowance recipients who were actively seeking paid work A recent High Court decision means you can claim deductions this year for expenses you incurred in actively seeking paid work, if you received Newstart allowance or were a Youth allowance job seeker. You must have records to support your claim. Use item D15 on page s43 in TaxPack 2011 supplement to make your claim. You can claim: • expenses you incurred in meeting the requirements of your Employment Pathway Plan • short-term travel costs, such as travel to job interviews • training courses, including self-employment training and assistance, and text books • phone calls you made seeking paid work, and • résumé preparation. You cannot claim expenses: • that relate to seeking employment in only a general way (for example, conventional clothing) • that are of a private or domestic nature (for example, conventional clothing, grooming and meals), or • paid for by your Job Services Australia provider.

TAX TIME Do I have to lodge a tax return?
2010 / 2011 tax agent. Only registered tax agents may charge for preparing and lodging your tax return. All registered tax agents are registered with the Tax Practitioners Board. You can find out from the website www.tpb.gov.au if the accountant is a registered tax agent. In addition, to ensure the accountant is a registered tax agent, it may also be worth checking to see if the accountant is a member of a professional accounting association such as CPA Australia or ICAA. Members of such organisations must adhere to strict guidelines, including keeping up to date with changing taxation laws and accounting practices. How do I choose a good accountant? Many people are already familiar with a good accountant, but if you are not - or are not happy with the one you have been using - you should collate a list of potential targets. Newspaper ads, the yellow pages or the websites on the internet are good sources, but maybe you have friends or family, whom you trust, who can suggest who you should contact. Once you have considered their qualifications and experience you may already have a particular accountant in mind, but you could make a list of four or five accountants you would like to contact to see if they are the right professional for you.
If you were an Australian resident during 2010-11 and you paid tax under the PAYG withholding system or instalment system or had tax withheld from payments made to you, the answer is YES.

There are 19 other reasons listed on the Australian Tax Office’s (ATO’s) website www.ato.gov.au when a tax return must be lodged!! If in doubt, ask a registered tax agent. Should I complete and lodge my tax return this year or should I get an accountant to do it for me? With the financial year just gone there are no doubt plenty of people who are pondering this question. There are obviously both pros and cons whichever way you decide to go. You may have to fork out anywhere up to a couple of hundred dollars depending on the degree of complexity of your return, or even more if you have several investments and/or rental properties. A benefit of using a good accountant is that the accountant will be able to help you navigate through all the tax deductions available and also be up to date with legislative changes that may affect your financial situation. How can I make sure the accountant knows his or her stuff? You should check if the accountant is a registered

What if I do my own tax return? On the other hand if you decide to prepare and lodge your own tax return it is really important to be aware of what you can and can’t claim. Some of the most common mistakes include understating income, such as forgetting interest income, and providing incorrect capital gains or losses or leaving them out altogether. The Australian Taxation Office receives, for every taxpayer, income information (salary & wages, contract payments, interest, dividends, etc) and other information from employers, financial institutions and other businesses. This information is available to individuals who use the ATO’s e-tax program to lodge the tax return. Sometime after the tax return has been lodged, when the ATO carries out an income matching program, omitted income will sometimes be detected. If the ATO finds a discrepancy, the taxpayer will be contacted. If income has been omitted, the taxpayer will have to pay tax plus interest on the amount omitted and possibly a fine. This information received by the ATO is also available to registered tax agents for their clients in the form of a report called a pre-filling report. By comparing a taxpayer’s pre-filling report with the information provided by the taxpayer, an accountant can avoid a situation where income is inadvertently omitted.

TAX TIME Tax Office warning on scams Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo recently warned the community to be alert to tax related scams in the lead up to tax time. “During the busy tax season, scammers will try to catch you off guard using phone calls, letters, text messages, emails, bogus websites and even false job advertisements to trick you into providing your personal details and paying money. “We are aware of a current telephone scam operating where a person claiming to be from the ATO or ‘Taxation Department’ calls offering you a grant of $7,000.00 if you pay $200.00. “These scammers try to appear more legitimate by providing you with a case number and a telephone number to call back on. “Anyone who receives these types of calls should treat them with caution and not provide any personal details or money,” said Mr D’Ascenzo. “The ATO will never ask you to pay money to receive your refund.
2010 / 2011 “If you need to confirm someone is calling from the ATO call 13 28 61. “If something seems suspicious, too good to be true, asks you for personal details or cannot be verified by contacting an official source, it is likely to be a scam and you should report it.” “These scams are then investigated by the ATO and other government agencies as appropriate, including the Australian Federal Police,” said Mr D’Ascenzo. If you think you have been the victim of a scam, contact the ATO client contact centre immediately by phoning 13 28 61 (8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday). You can also report suspected email scams to the ATO by forwarding the email to ReportEmailFraud@ato.gov.au. For more information on how to protect yourself from scams go to www.ato.gov.au/onlinesecurity.

George Woodward Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Through life I have been privileged to meet many interesting characters in outback Australia. I first met Charles at a small gold mine in a remote part of the Northern Territory. He worked his little gold mine by himself. Charles was a rough diamond, fiercely independent, who did not suffer fools lightly. When I visited him he would greet me with questions like, “Is God dead yet?” This would create some friendly banter as we wandered off to his crude living quarters for a cup of tea. Charles made a good cuppa over an open fire. Charles was not a healthy man. He had major breathing problems from years of inhaling dust and from years of smoking. As his health deteriorated over a number of years he told me some of his life story. There was deep sadness in his story. He lived alone in a very

isolated place trying to escape from the grief and hurt of earlier years. There was a daughter but he had little to do with her. As his health declined he also told me about his faith. Now Charles was not about to go to church any time soon and he sometimes made fun of what I believed. One day when I called he produced some rosary beads and began to explain that his mother had given them to him and taught him to pray using them when he was a young boy and he had used them every night before going to sleep. We had a number of long good talks about his relationship with God and as he got sicker I discovered that his spirit was in a good place. Sometimes life’s experiences are just plain tough. Charles knew that. His wife had committed suicide early in their marriage, a number of business deals had gone very bad and a child had been tragically killed. His way of coping with these things had perhaps not been perfect but he had held on to the faith that his mother had taught him. It was a privilege at his funeral to tell the story as he had shared it with me. In life we will experience things that often seem too hard to bear. Sometimes they are heaped one on the other. A faith in God will enable us to keep our spirits strong and find meaning and purpose even when it looks like our world is falling apart. May you know the peace, the love, the joy that God offers to us in Jesus. Charles knew that in his life.

There are 26 fortnights in a year but only 12 months, so by dividing your set monthly repayment in two and paying it fortnightly, you will make an extra month’s repayment each year. Teresa also has some additional suggestions. ‘Make extra repayments whenever you can,’ she says. ‘And keep your repayments the same if interest rates drop – you won’t notice a difference in your monthly budget, but it could make a big difference to your mortgage.’ Where can I find a little extra?

So you want to sell your house
Tracey Mulry
Have you thought about how to approach the sale? Consider it as a project – and there is plenty to think about. The condition of the house. You may think it is perfect, however building and pest inspections may find otherwise. It can be heartbreaking to get a contract to have it fall over because of building and pest issues. What about the value? Do you want too much in today’s market. Our thinking and attachment to our property can influence what happens. If there are two or more people involved, do each of you really want to sell? Recently I was told a story about a couple who
had their house on the market for over six months, had three contracts and not one proceeded to settlement. Out of the blue one day, the husband suggested to his wife (they had already moved out) that he really loved the house, the area and did not want to sell. Guess what? They moved back to the house and everyone is happy again. Often a third party can delve deeper to make sure that the property is ready to be sold to achieve a fast result, that pleases all parties. That is our project – an operation to get your house sold! For a discussion about getting your house ready to sell, call us today on 0412 061 340. www.projectoperationhousesold.com.au

Tibro’s Netball Season Update
The 2011 netball season is in full swing. Club games are nearing the finals and a few Carnivals have already been attended. On Sunday, June 19 several Tibro’s teams enjoyed fantastic weather and a full day of games at the Redlands District Carnival. Teams that attended were Tigereyes, Emeralds, Diamonds, Gems and Rubies. Tigereyes came third after winning some great games, Emeralds also finished third by one point after some very tight scorelines. The Diamonds gave a valiant effort. The Gems lost one game and came down to a count-back to take out first place in the 13 years division. In 2010 the Gems won every carnival they attended and were dubbed the ‘Carnival Queens’. Tibro Rubies had a challenging day in Division 1, losing a couple of close games by a few of goals and finishing the day with two wins, their game play improved as the day progressed. In the Saturday comp. at Caloundra
Beerwah Bulldogs Report
Contributed by Dean Roberts The Bulldogs travelled up to Nambour on Sunday and found the Crushers too good on the day by winning the three games. The Club was down on troops on the day but can take a lot of pride out of the games with the way the Under 18’s stepped up to assist the Reserve Grade and A Grade teams and the boys will take a lot of experience out of their performances in which they can be duly proud of on Sunday. Great news for the Club and the district as our Under 13 Player Reed Mahoney played himself into the Number 9 Qld. Under 13 Jersey with his performances over the last week at the State titles at Ipswich. Reed was named in the Queensland side after starring at the titles with two ‘Man of the Match’ Awards and two ‘Players’ Player’ Awards and the Club is very proud of his achievement. A Grade: Nambour Crushers – 36 – (Maddison Murphy 1, Liam Young 1, Sam Mawhinney 1, Lachlan Scantlebury 2, Mitch Ward 1, Ryan Reed 1 – Tries)

In other club news we are happy to have a new grass court area giving the club more scope for training and fitness training. New lights are being fitted and the new uniforms look fantastic. So fantastic that Tibro’s won the March Past at the opening round for the Caloundra District Netball Association 2011 Season for the first time ever! Good luck for the remainder of the season to all teams. Watch this space for more Carnival news in the coming months. (Dale Smythe 4 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 4 – (Ashley Sleeman 1 – Tries) (Nil – Goals) Reserve Grade: Nambour Crushers – 24 – (Alex McGilchrist 1, Alex Tinielu 1, David Oakes 2, Lionel Williams 1 – Tries) (Dan Brook 2 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs - 10 – (Brad Tweedale 1, Jeremi Scott 1 – Tries) (Mitch Jackson 1 – Goals) Under 18: Nambour Crushers – 44 – (Kenny Knight 4, Daniel Locke-Jelenic 1, Jake Costello 2, Matt Kassenbaum 1 –Tries) (David Oakes 6 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 4 – (Levi Pearce 1 – Tries) (Nil – Goals). Commenting on the weekend activities, Flotilla Commander Tony Barker thanked all sponsors and participants for their involvement. “The business community and fishers have this year shown that in troubled times they understand that we, as Coast Guard volunteers, need their support to ensure that boating in our district is a little safer than it would be if it were not for their efforts.”

Disappearing produce
Ever waited patiently for those first few strawberries to ripen perfectly and then, to your dismay, they vanish the very day you go eagerly skipping down to the garden to pick them? You go through the possible culprits in your mind. Can’t be slugs, they only nibble the sides and are nearly always still in or on the fruit. Must be birds, they gobble the lot and leave very little evidence of their feast. It was not until I was busily tending another section of the garden that I spotted my culprit in action. There rummaging through the leaves in search of the next juicy treat was … my son! Well now I’m at a loss, because at least with slugs I could set some traps or scatter sawdust around, and with birds I could have laid some chicken mesh over the bed, but what to do about my son? Well, to be honest I’m more than happy to lose my produce this way as I just love the fact that my kids can feast on fresh fruit and veg straight from the patch. The strawberry jam will just have to wait! At the moment, in addition to the strawberries,
my family loves the abundance of fresh cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli we are harvesting. In particular though, I just crave a freshly dug, washed and baked potato each night. In my opinion, once you’ve tried a freshly dug potato, it is very difficult to go back to the shop bought potato that has often been stored for weeks or months. Now, onto gardening jobs for this month. Once again, as I do each year, the month of July is
Rosemary’s plant of the month King Fern Angiopteris evecta Reputed to be the largest fern in the world, this fern has fronds growing 5 to 7m in length. Usually found growing near creeks (e.g. Fraser Island). Fronds and their bases are edible. This is an easy to grow fern for dappled shade, but needs regular water to keep the giant fronds from wilting. If you would like more information on this plant or any others drop in and see Rosemary at Mountain View Garden Centre, 1094 Steve Irwin Way, Glasshouse Mtns. Phone 5438 7779.

my mass planting time because it is the tail end for planting many winter vegetables and I like to get a bulk of these vegetables for freezing and to make pickles, jam and other condiments. It also ensures that most of my vegetables are able to be harvested before the beginning of the pest season. My bulk planting will include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beetroot, peas, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes and beans. It is now just a matter of finding the room in my already packed garden. In preparation for my brassica plantings, I will be digging in my green crop of barley and scattering a generous amount of dynamic lifter, fresh compost and blood and bone over the area. Finally, I check the pH and adjust where necessary to 6.5-7.5 with lime. I will also be doing a final potato planting at the end of this month. Based on my various trials, I am prone to favour planting them in a raised garden using some tyres and large black tubs I have. This allows a warmer soil environment and ease of covering should frost be predicted. So lots of work is ahead of me in the garden this month and I relish the chance to get in and get gardening. Let’s hope everyone gets a chance to taste the delights of their produce before they mysteriously disappear. Until next month in ‘Get Up and Grow’…

I finally figured out why I look the way I do! As I was shampooing my hair in the shower this morning, I took time to read my shampoo bottle. I am in shock! The shampoo I use in the shower that runs down my entire body says, ‘For extra volume and body’!
Seriously, why have I not noticed this before? Tomorrow I am going to start using ‘Dawn’ dish soap! It says right on the bottle, ‘Dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to remove.’ It pays to read the warning labels, my friends! Submitted by Bradley Mitchell, Beerwah.
