Hi Everyone Normally after the Maleny Show I am saying to my self ... ahh just one more public holiday and then that’s it - nothing then until Christmas. Don’t get me wrong I am not one of those evil bosses who just thinks to themselves – how much are the public holidays costing me – it is just about our production schedule. What we try and do is make sure the paper gets out as regular and our team still gets a day away from the office – tricky as we still have the same amount of work that needs to get done, but when we are really organised we pull it off. But things are a little different this year – we will be having our Queens Diamond Jubilee public holiday next Monday and then we can look forward to the Queen’s Birthday on October 1 for the first time. So I thought we would give everyone plenty of notice this
year - if you have anything that you desperately need to sell in the October 3 edition – then you have the next 16 weeks to get it into the classifieds - give us a call and book it in, and as usual with long weekends if you want something in next week’s classifieds let us know by Friday 12.00noon. And let’s hope we get some great weather next Monday so we can all take advantage of the extra public holiday this year! Regards,

The Mooloolah Valley Country Club, on the Mooloolah Connection Road, Glenview, was placed into insolvency in January this year, reportedly owing a considerable amount of money to a long list of creditors, including local businesses. The insolvency action, instigated by the ANZ bank, brings to an abrupt end the uncertainty which has surrounded the running of the club for the past two years. This week, the liquidators – Morton’s Solvency Accountants – placed the property and all associated facilities up for sale through Brisbane agents McGees Property. Boasting almost 8,000 square metres of land, a club house, maintenance shed, a suspended liquor licence, 20 gaming authorities and an assortment of equipment, the property is for sale by expression of interest, closing June 28. According to real estate website onthehouse. com.au, the land is valued at $300,000, with the property value being estimated at up to $600,000.

The collapse of the club has thrown the local community into turmoil, with the future of the Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club at a crossroads. Currently, the bowls club have been using the greens and club facilities under the good will of the Country Club. It is unknown whether this arrangement will continue past June 28 if a new owner is found. The closure of the Country Club has also reignited the debate surrounding the application for a tavern in Mooloolah Township, with calls for Council to approve the proposed venue which supporters say will fill an obvious void in the local market. If a willing buyer can be found, the site can only be used as a community club with the land being classed as Open Space – Sport and Recreation under the Caloundra City Plan.

Embracia volunteers celebrate National Volunteers Week Contributed by Trina Haylock, Lifestyle coordinator
Embracia in Glasshouse Country celebrated National Volunteers week from May 14 - 20.
We are incredibly lucky to have a great team of volunteers who contribute through various activities including calling bingo and hoy, sing-a-longs, quizzes, cooking, reading, visiting residents, Coffee Club, bus trips, church services, bowling, pet therapy and more. Each volunteer received a poem written especially for them at the annual volunteer’s lunch. This year our fantastic volunteers enjoyed a scrumptious two course lunch at Pomadoras
in Maleny. We displayed the poems along with photos at Embracia for everyone to enjoy. Here at Embracia we appreciate and value our precious volunteers and we are always pleased to welcome new people to the team. At this point in time we are in need of a new volunteer bus driver as one of our drivers has recently retired. A HR license is all that is required and we will provide any necessary training and checks that may be required. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact Trina Haylock on 5436 5444.

Inspired by her colour palette David and Lyn Linton of David Linton Gallery have invited Cholena Drew Hughes, an emerging Beerwah artist, to hold her first solo exhibition at their gallery in Maleny. Growing up feeding her love of the arts through dance and high school art studies, local artist Cholena found herself drawn to the artworks of famous local artists Ian Fairweather and Laurence Daws.
Having travelled internationally and nationally, Cholena's 18 months spent at Uluru, Northern Territory was the final push that inspired her to pursue artistic development, and where better than from the Glasshouse Mountains which stood as beacons of inspiration throughout her childhood. Over a period of four years Cholena has expanded her artistic knowledge through TAFE, completing her Diploma of Fine Art with Distinctions at Noosa Campus where she achieved the institutes much prized Aquizition Award. Cholena describes herself as a contemporary artist, she mixes her own colours, mostly from primarys, to create an image where a feeling or emotion is captured. Cholena's solo exhibition opens on Sunday, June 10 at 10.00am concluding on Sunday, June 17 at 4.00pm. The Gallery is open every day from 10.00am – 4.00pm and for one night only, Friday, June 15 for a fundraising event to assist the gallery owner’s daughter Jess in pursuing international and further development opportunities.

Inserting pictures or photos
There are many complicated ways to put pictures in a document, but for beginners in Word, here’s a very simple step by step way! Click on ‘Insert’ on the toolbar. Choose ‘Picture’, then/or ‘ClipArt’...(If you want a picture from your files, choose ‘From File’ instead and browse your files then double click on your picture to include…) In ClipArt, type in the subject you want, click ‘Go’, then browse through the pictures offered to select the one you want. Follow the prompts to import the image into your document. When the image reaches your document, resize by clicking on the image to see its outline box, then clicking & dragging your mouse on a corner marker to the required size. With the picture selected, you can [click & hold] on its border & drag the image to anywhere you want. If the picture won’t move, or to arrange the picture amongst your text, select the picture, click ‘Format’, select ‘Picture’ then ‘Layout’; or ‘Position’, and see the various choices – in front of/behind text, tightly wrapped, in-line...try each one and see how many easy and fun options there are! For more, call Gus and Kylie at Mooloolah Computers on 0405 125 662.
From the Schools Greening the Classroom
Mooloolah State School just got a whole lot greener. The Year 7’s, in conjunction with Go Green Rainforest Nursery, have replanted part of the bank of the creek with an indigenous edible forest. The fruits, nuts and flowers from these trees will provide an edible feast for students in the future. Over 40 trees have been planted and the growth is already amazing. After the trees have grown a little bit more this garden will transform into a learning environment where students can relax whilst eating some of the foods that Year 7 students of 2012 planted and cared for. For a more immediate focus, the Year 7’s with their amazing teacher Mr Lowe, have also planted vegetables for the tuckshop. The lettuce, peas, celery and herbs will be used for fresh tasty salads. Gone are the processed foods and in come

Two dogs and an alpaca You could be excused for thinking that Glasshouse Country Christian College was turning into an animal farm last Monday when they welcomed some very special furry friends. The first guest to leave her hoofmark in the visitor’s register was a beautiful baby alpaca named Cassiopeia who was only three-months-old. It was Matthew Tsangaris, Year 1, turn for ‘show and tell’ so he brought one of his family’s alpacas for the occasion. Matthew used the opportunity to teach the class about alpaca farming and shared information about alpaca hair and habits. The young children were wide-eyed
It was especially great at Landsborough State School recently when the school celebrated Under 8’s Week by hosting a morning packed full of activities and opening their doors to children and families of under 8’s in the local community to join in the morning of celebrations. The day was a huge success and a great way to bring the school and community together with approximately 200 children participating in the celebrations. The school resembled a showground with helium balloons, bubble machines, show bags, a farm animal petting zoo and jumping castle. If that wasn’t enough to keep the little ones busy, there were 13 other activities on offer including storytelling, computers, puppet shows, craft, yoga, planting seedlings, master chef cooking classes and dancing. Some students from older grades also became involved by taking on the responsibility of helping with activities and leading visitors around the school grounds. Thanks to all the parents, carers, child care centres and kindergartens who brought their children along to attend the morning of celebrations. It was great to receive such fantastic support for this event and to celebrate together the diversity of the young children in our community.
as they learned that alpacas hummed to calm themselves and they could turn their ears in every direction. Soon after Cassiopeia trotted off home to her mum, two canine visitors made themselves comfortable in the GCCC library. The first was a big fluffy dog who came with a guest speaker from All Pets Caboolture District Hospital and the second was a tiny little puppy brought in by Sunshine Coast Council. Both groups of visitors spent time explaining responsible pet ownership to the students and how to look after animals properly. The two dogs and the alpaca were very well behaved and GCCC Year 1 students (and teachers) were sad to see them leave. www.gcnews.com.au
Healing through celebrations Contributed by Boris Croft Beerwah High School held their annual ‘Sorry Day’ Celebrations on Friday, May 25. This event supports healing in our community as it acknowledges past events that wronged Indigenous people and culture and focusses on the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the past and today. This was organised by the school’s Indigenous Student Council, with the aid of Ms Aleccia Franks (Indigenous Community Advisor), which had students involved in setting up, running and organising this event. Beerwah High School invited other surrounding primary schools within the Hinterland to participate in activities. The day included a whole school presentation that involved Lyndon Davies’ Gubbi Gubbi dancers performing a ‘Welcome to Country’ and a presentation from Bev Hand outlining past history that led to loss of Indigenous culture.
Another highlight was the performance of Hip Hop dance group ‘Level 6’ who are Beerwah High students. Local primary school’s Indigenous students participated in gratitude rock painting, hip hop dance workshops and artefact workshops. A big thank you to Qld Health for funding the day and health screening our students. A key message that Smoking kills was delivered to the whole school community. The day was a big success. Student Dylan Carr, who MC’d the event said “a lot of time and effort went into organising this event, but it’s worth it to show the teachers and students of Beerwah High what the Indigenous students are capable of. The primary students were so happy doing the activities.”
Beerwah SHS rocks with Battle of the Bands On Wednesday, May 9, Beerwah SHS swung into action with their annual Battle of the Bands competition. Seven bands competed on the night and the talent was both varied and ‘awesome’, according to those who were lucky enough to attend. The evening was opened by the Staff Band aptly named ‘The Educators’ as they whipped the crowd into a frenzy with their version of ‘Zombie’. All the acts were fantastic. Special mention must be made of Rhialle Seric who showed what a real trooper she was and
performed while suffering terribly with the flu. Judges made special mention of her original work and the amazing depth to her song writing ability. As in any competition, the judges vote is final, and it was a tough decision. Ultimately the trophy went to ‘Roses for the Damned’ and by the crowds response all agreed with this decision. Battle of the Bands is organised by School Chaplain Mike Turner and a willing band of helpers from the student body who are part of the World Vision group. Proceeds of the night go towards supporting World Vision and assisting those who are less fortunate than ourselves. We all look forward to what this event will bring to the stage next year.

What sets your business apart from others that may offer a similar service? My objective is to become one of the more recognised, trusted security screen companies on the Sunshine Coast. We are only starting out small, working from home and sourcing quality products from only reputable dealers, but my goal is to eventually set up my own factory/workshop/office in the hinterland area, and train staff in the correct methods of manufacture and installation. How long have you been operating your business? I have 20 years experience in the glass and aluminium industry, I’ve worked in the industry since I was 18-years-old. I have worked for major window companies, in the factory, as well as on the road as a ‘service tech’, and smaller security screen/blind and awning manufacturers from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast as a measurer and installer. For the past nine years I have been employed for a relatively large security screen manufacturer in Brisbane as a sales rep/measurer as well as in product design and installation work. Why should readers give you a call? For my customer service, efficiency, professionalism and attention to detail, knowledge and industry experience. Also, I am BSA licenced, which is important, as there are so many unlicensed tradespeople in the industry that don’t do things correctly, something that I am looking to change. What are your opening hours? I can be contacted 8.00am – 6.00pm Monday to Friday, 8.00am – 2.00pm Saturday. Meetings can be arranged at my home/office by appointment, but mostly onsite, at customers’ homes or jobsites. Contact Mark on 0477 999 191, fax 5445 0548, email blockadesecurity@ gmail.com or visit their website at www.blockadesecurity.com.au

What's in the Spotlight Celebrate Green June Celebrate all things eco-friendly this Green June! The month-long festival includes Living Smart workshops, eco-flicks, the Living Smart Glossies awards, the Noosa Festival of Water and more, to help you reduce your environmental footprint for a more sustainable Sunshine Coast. Details on council’s website.
Jazz in the Gardens Kick back to the smooth sounds of cool jazz at the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens this Sunday, 10 June from 1 – 4pm. This is the first in the Sundayze Series of free, live entertainment. Its family friendly and features local jazz groups, entertainment for the kids along with lots of food stalls.
Grow bushfood in your backyard Head for your local library this month to learn how you can grow bush food from native plants in your garden. Backyard Bushfood workshops are being held at Sunshine Coast libraries across the Coast. The workshops are free but booking is essential. Visit council’s library website to book and to find out more.
Last year a group of 20 PNG folk from Gaba Gaba came and spread their happiness around Glasshouse Country at the Uniting Church Playgroup, Embracia, Glasshouse Country Care and Caloundra Nursing homes with their infectious singing and dancing. The return visit of Ruth Wright, Chris and Martin Bell, Bev Holyer, Rob Critchley, Paia and John Ingram in May was a much smaller delegation, but were given a right royal welcome with the re-enactment of the arrival of the Gospel on Gaba Gaba shores in 1876. Fortunately the girls in grass skirts provided protection from the spears saying "we come in peace." The walk to the host house through the mud and climbing the huge stairs were memorable activities, but the loving care and friendliness with which the delegation was received by the whole village could not be put into words. Our group helped with the service and devotions on Sunday, and they were honoured to visit Miracle City, which is now a thriving teaching centre for 12 to 15 theological students and their families after only six years.
Chris climbs the stairs The student’s wives are really keen on craft and would love to come to Australia for a ‘craft exchange’ visit. The talented Gaba Gaba youth group (young adults) who provided much singing and dancing in ceremonial costume are also anxious for a cultural exchange visit to Australia. Gaba Gaba is 70 kms south east of Port Moresby. It takes a couple of hours hard driving over washed out roads to get there, but it’s worth the wonderful cultural differences we experienced.
New bus stops at Landsborough Work has begun on two new, disability compliant bus stops on Old Landsborough Rd, Landsborough. Council will endeavour to avoid disturbing large and established trees, however it will be necessary to remove a small number of trees. Construction is estimated to take 6 weeks – weather permitting.
Gaba Gaba Welcome
Vegetation management changes Leafy suburbs and trees contribute to the Coast’s lifestyle but on occasion residents need to remove trees interfering with structures or services. From 22 June, the way council manages vegetation on private land will change. The level of vegetation protection remains the same but there will be new forms to complete when applying for a permit to remove vegetation. To check if you need approval to remove trees in your area contact a landscape assessment officer on 5475 7272 or visit council’s website.
Sundayze Series for winter 2012 The Sundayze Series of live entertainment includes jazz, opera, comedy, funky fusion, retro / rock’n’roll and relaxed island beats at locations across the Coast from June to August. Events are free and details are on the events page on council’s website.
COUNCIL MEETINGS Ordinary Meetings
Glasshouse Country delegates
House concerts are very popular at the moment and it is easy to see why. It allows the host to put on a concert of their choice in the comfort of their own home for invited friends. It may mean they can feature themselves, their children or their friends on the program. It can be a lot of fun, so what needs to be considered before taking the plunge and putting one on? Firstly there are risk management and duty of care issues, for example you need to warn your neighbours, accommodate extra parking in your street, concern yourself with noise restrictions, be aware of extra demands on your bathroom facilities, provide cups of tea and cakes, promote your event to the people you want to come, ask a donation (fee) for the artists, and perhaps provide a small PA for the event. It is not a party, but people will treat it as such, so a little amplification will be necessary if your musicians are to be heard. (It should cost from about $100.00 for a small PA with operator for a 90 minute concert).
Do some research online regarding such things as public liability. This is always a tricky area, but if your concert is by invitation only things are unlikely to go wrong, after all there is little difference between a house concert and a private party. If your musicians have their own insurance and the donation you ask is not a door fee, and you are making no money from it then you shouldn’t have any concerns. I always recommend making a house concert a morning or afternoon tea event as then people don’t expect to be drinking and it adds that little formal edge which many musicians enjoy. Most people however, see house concerts as a bit of a party and that is when you need to worry about crowd control, people falling into the pool etc. so there are risks involved, but the rewards can be compelling. I attended one at the ‘house with no walls’ at Eumundi last week and it was wonderful - sharing a beautiful house and grounds with over 100 like-minded people and getting to hear some great music. You can’t beat that experience. Have a wonderful musical month! Michael

with Lea Parkes The first time I walked through the doors of the Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchant on Steve Irwin Way (next door to Mountain View Garden Centre) I was pleasantly surprised – I felt like I was transported to a different time and place. The new owner Steve has created what other locals have described as a slice of paradise. It is a perfect place to sneak away and cut yourself off from the busy world outside and indulge in a great coffee or tea, along with a tasty selection of handmade cakes and slices. They are open Tuesday to Sunday from 8.00am – 5.00pm so take some time out to enjoy some time out from the real world.
We recently dropped into the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on a Friday night so Brownie could try out the T-Bone steak for $14.90 that had been advertised in GCNews. I went for the pasta on the specials board and the verdict - great value, great taste and great service. Judging by the number of tables with large groups, it clearly is a popular place to meet up with friends and family. And Thursday night is really popular with young families as for each paying adult, customers can get a free meal for the kids off the kids menu. Being a club they also offer a courtesy bus that travels as far as Australia Zoo and down to Elimbah. So why not take a night off from cooking and head to the Sports Club on a Thursday and Friday nights.

It certainly is a privilege to have the opportunity to use this column to communicate with Glasshouse Country residents through the Glasshouse Country News and I look forward to sharing ideas and information with you regularly. I feel genuinely thankful to the community for their trust in electing me and I am pleased to be part of this particular team of representatives. With the election behind us, and since the swearing in of the new council, it’s been full steam ahead. Councillors and the mayor have been focussed on setting strategic directions and establishing key priorities necessary to build a prosperous region that is respectful of our environment. The Sunshine Coast could easily be branded as the 'Region of Choice'. It has a remarkable range of landforms that support a genuinely diverse choice of lifestyles. Our job is to preserve and enhance both. I believe our collective job is to retain our capacity to remain as a region of choice by being the best that we can. I believe that this council is determined to work together as a team and is listening to and will empower its communities. I feel a growing mood of optimism within the staff, that this council is about helping to make things happen. We will need to do a remarkable job at collaborating with all levels of government, service organisations and the private sector if we are to design our future rather than tumble into it. Our greatest challenge will be to succeed in providing long overdue infrastructure. These first few weeks in office have been extremely busy getting on top of a vast number of programs and projects. I’ve already had a very productive meeting with the Infrastructure team involved in the upgrade of Mill Park and look forward to providing future updates on plans and progress as this much-needed amenity takes shape. If you would like information about Division 1 activities please call my office or email me rick.baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
From Jenny McKay Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726
Great to be back… Thank you so much!
I am delighted to have been re-elected as your division 5 councillor. A massive thank you for the confidence you have placed in returning me to office. I’m very much looking forward to working with residents for another term and continuing to deliver great results for our community. But there’s no time to waste celebrating as we’re all straight back to council business. Council has already hit the ground running with the delay of the elections meaning it is all systems firing full throttle as we power into budget mode.
Opportunity to share important news with readers
Thank you also to the wonderful local independent papers for presenting me with this privilege to be back online communicating with everyone. This provides me with the opportunity to regularly share with the community what is happening as well as gather your valuable feedback.
New name for Rainforest Place park coming soon…
One community update I would like to share with you is we will soon be announcing the official name of the park opposite Rainforest Place, Diamond Valley. Council has recently completed upgrade works at this park. This included the erection of a hardwood post and rail fence along the frontage of the park, and the planting of native trees. Our records indicated however that no official name to the park has ever been given and as a result, we threw it open to the local community to submit suggestions. We have received some great name proposals (thank you!) and look forward to announcing the winning name soon.
Hurray for local talent!
A big congratulations to the Mooloolah’s Got Talent organisers for the outstanding event they held recently at the Mooloolah Public Hall, Bray Road. I had a heap of fun attending the event with my grandchildren. What a terrific way for residents to come together to socialise, showcase local talent and just have a really good time. The organisers were able to successfully secure some funding towards the event from council’s community grants. They are hoping it is going to be a regular event in Mooloolah and by the look of it, so too do all the performers and attendees. www.gcnews.com.au
Health Check
Glasshouse Mountains Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy is a model of simplicity; it empowers the body to heal itself. Precise moves are made over muscles, tendons and nerves which produce a relax and release effect. In most cases only one or two treatments are required and can be performed through light loose clothing. Pauses are made between moves to allow the body time to respond, it’s during these waits of two minutes on average that the client may feel some tingling, heat or a general feeling of relaxation around the area being worked on. Bowen Therapy continues to work for five days after treatment, it is very powerful treatment which works in unison with our bodies own intelligence. During a Bowen session, particular attention is made to the muscles shown in the diagram. The nerves which innervate these muscles can become pinched or challenged resulting in numerous conditions including backache, neck restriction, sciatica, knee and ankle pain and headaches. If you would like more information please ring Tracy on 5496 9686 or 0413 779 193 and I will try and answer any questions you have. Appointments can be made Monday - Friday with the occasional Saturday. Health Fund Rebates Apply. Website research www.bowtech.com or www.glasshousemountainsbowentherapy.com
Gentle Body Alignment
But I’m not in pain, so why worry? Like tooth decay, damage to your spine can develop painlessly until it irritates a nerve. The bad news is that once the damage has occurred, it will always be there. Now for the good news: maintaining good posture habits will slow the rate of degeneration and protect the as yet unharmed areas. Your musculoskeletal system is a mechanical system, and as such, if you use it properly, it will wear down more slowly than if you misuse and abuse it. The truth is that you don’t have to age poorly. You can condition your body to age better by keeping fit and maintaining a healthy posture. Ageing is a process for which you can prepare and condition your body so that you will age more benignly. If you do not make the commitment to your own health, rid yourself of bad habits and acquire good habits instead, your quest toward better health will surely fail. Don't wait for pain, for a complete posture evaluation and a complementary posture care class, please call 5494 1883. contributed by Ian Mc Carron.
The club's monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month with a barbecue after every second meeting. We have a games day on the fourth Tuesday of every month with card games and carpet bowls. Starting time for all functions is 9.00am for 9.15am with a morning tea. Periodically we host other Seniors clubs from throughout the area or travel to other Seniors clubs where morning tea, entertainment and lunch is provided. We also have guest speakers, stalls, lucky door and also raffle prizes at all functions. You can join us to go on daily bus or train trips to see places of interest such as the Brisbane Museum. Our meeting place is at the Hall next to the library in Beerwah. For further enquiries ring President Patricia Williamson on 5493 0345. Combined Probus Club of Glass House Mountains
contributed by Lois Gilbey Probus is a Rotary sponsored association of clubs promoting healthy ageing in our communities. These clubs are open to membership of active retirees or people no longer working full time, to provide opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests, build new relationships and enjoy the fellowship of new friends.
We participate in monthly meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club where we invite a speaker along who always provides interesting and informative information on their chosen subject. We provide a free morning tea and our members bring along a small plate of food to share for lunch. Our members pay just $4.00 per meeting to cover the cost of the venue. We have a vegetable and fruit box donated to us by Matilda Fruit Barn which we offer as a door prize. Visitors and intending new members are free to attend three meetings while they decide if we are a good fit for them. We also go on monthly outings to places of interest, these could be local destinations or further afield on a very pleasant bus trip for the day. We have in the past enjoyed a cruise on the Brisbane River, visited the Flower Festival in Toowoomba or had a lovely picnic on the beach. There is also a sub-group for those members who enjoy a game of mah jong on alternate Monday at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. For more information about mah jong please contact Gwen on 5494 6231. We are always looking for new members to enhance our current membership. For further information about our Club you can contact our President Frank Cockram on 5494 0709.

Be flusmart With winter officially here from June 1, it’s important to start taking the flu seriously and understand that it’s nothing to sniff at. Statistics show that the flu can be a grim illness and in Australia each year contributes to more deaths than road accidents. To help Australians be flusmart this winter, Dr Andrew Rochford has developed a set of handy tips to help us avoid the flu - tips that could save you from one or two weeks spent laid up in bed, having to spend money on Dr Andrew Rochford medications and, more importantly, it can save lives. 1. Get vaccinated Getting vaccinated is the single, most effective way to minimise the risk of contracting the disease. 2. Stay away from sick people During flu season it’s not unreasonable to avoid interaction with people that are sick. Whether it's social or business, don't feel guilty, the closer you get to someone with the flu, the better your chances of getting it. Feel free to tell any ‘outbreak monkeys’ that you know to stay at home! 3. Enjoy a well balanced diet containing a broad variety of fresh food, fruit and vegetables The more variety and the more vitamins and minerals, the better your chance of maintaining good nutritional health and a potent immune system. 4. Learn to love soap and warm water Hand-washing is exceptionally important in decreasing the spread of the influenza virus. All you need is soap, some water and an eagerness to lather. Don’t forget to get the kids involved at the same time; it's a great habit to get them into. 5. Stop lying The average person tells four lies a day, that's 1,460 a year. One of the major giveaways that someone is telling a lie is that they touch their nose face and eyes, which during flu season increases your chance of catching and spreading the flu. So if you quit the white lies you reduce your chances of getting the flu.....and ending your relationship at the same time!

Princess Par-Tea to wow guests Every now and again a child’s dream captures our imagination, creating something special for others to share in. Four-year-old Cadence Henry’s dream of a ‘sparkly, pretty, dancing tea-party’ has done just that. It was while in hospital earlier this year that Cadence, who suffers from a rare combination of neurological and neurobiological conditions, first coined her sparkly tea-party idea. Shortly afterwards, she met Beerwah’s 10-year-old rising singer / songwriter, Cassi Hilbers – the two girls becoming both friends and the ‘creative team’ behind the ‘Mummy & Me Princess Par-Tea’ to be held in Glass House Mountains on Sunday, June 17. Candence’s mum Angela explains that every element of the event – from the age appropriate Beauty Pamper Spa, tiara and wand making, ‘High Tea’ and live mini-dance concert; right down to the grande pink carpet and bollard entrance – has been conceptualised by Cadence and Cassi, ensuring this magical event truly caters for the four to 10-year-old age group. “With incredible support from Sunshine Coast businesses - Petite Princess Parlour, Decorating Divas, Elite-Sounds Entertainment, Daisy’s Place and Sunflower Cafe at Glasshouse Market, we have been able to transform the girl’s concepts into a one-off, professionally implemented and themed event – quite unlike any other event seen before,” said Angela. Combined with the opportunity to win over $800.00 in prizes, all ‘Princess’s’ attending will go home with a Par-tea Box filled with goodies from Petite Princess Parlour, Pumpkin Patch Kids Couture and SugarLips, along with Cassi’s new CD ‘Brave Forever’. Cassi said she loves to sing to the kids in the hospitals. “That is where I met Cadence and she is trying so hard to be brave, so I wanted to write a song that was fun and happy and gave hope,” she said. “Cadence has become like a little sister to me. She loves my singing and I love singing to her. She has the cutest smile and I just love to see her smile,” Cassi said. The Mummy & Me Princess Par-Tea is a Cadence Foundation event with 100 per cent of ticket sales supporting Cadence’s ‘Quest to be Brave’. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY ANGLICAN CHURCH SUNDAY *Beerwah (Peachester Road) 9.00am
Just recently I heard a medical doctor talk about health. He was sharing with us about The Blue Zone. They have found communities around the world that live longer and are healthier overall. Many of them live up to 100 years of age in these communities, that includes men. There is one area in Japan, another in California, Sardinia, Greece and South America. The question asked is what makes these people live longer and healthier than other people generally? They have found some interesting things which are in these communities. I will mention just a few. They seemed to have a purpose for living, family and community connections, exercise, water, diet consisting mainly of vegetarian - and high in antioxidants, raw goats’ milk, fermented soya bean products, and nuts. They did not have the typical western diet. So can we learn something from them? Yes of course. This brings me to the Bible where in the beginning; God gave the human race a diet which only later was changed. One has to look at the

time after the flood and what happened when the diet changed. The life span of the human race was drastically reduced. It seems the people in The Blue Zones follow more the original diet and lifestyle and the results are remarkable. Another interesting study is called The China Study. It also talks about health. It seems that modern science is catching up with the Bible on health. John wrote to his friend Gaius that he wished he may have good health. If we follow health principles of the bible we will have better health.

Real Estate and Financial Guide Grant helps migrant students settle in nicely The real estate industry can be confusing at the best of times, but for a special group of migrant students at Sunshine Coast TAFE it’s all become a little clearer. Grant Smith was the youngest agent in Australia to own his own business five years. He is very generous with his own time, volunteering on a regular basis to help Sunshine Coast TAFE migrant students understand more about the Australian real estate industry. Sunshine Coast TAFE teacher Brenda Chandler said the success of the Institute’s Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is due largely to the philanthropic efforts of volunteers such as Grant. “We deliver a settlement program designed to familiarise our AMEP students with living skills and settling in Australia,” Ms Chandler said. “Through this course we break down the barriers they face in relation to housing, banking and health services. “Grant has volunteered his time for two years now explaining the process of buying and selling properties to our students and removing a lot of the fear involved with buying real estate in a foreign country. “We even conduct a mock auction, where our students interact directly with Grant as the house of one of the teaching staff members is sold under the hammer. “This activity generates lots of enthusiasm and excitement and is an indicator of the students’ enjoyment of this guest lecturer,” she said. Mr Smith said he found the volunteer work he did at TAFE for the local community thoroughly rewarding. “I love what I do and enjoy sharing my passion for real estate with our community,” he said.

There are few less appealing prospects than having to devote considerable time, energy and effort to finding a home loan that meets your needs. It’s even less appealing to negotiate your home loan deal directly with lenders. Get a broker ‘in your corner’ Having someone negotiate with the bank on your behalf – and in the process potentially secure you a much better deal – is for many people one of the main benefits of working with a mortgage broker – it’s all about ’having someone in your corner’. The fundamental difference is that a mortgage broker approaches the transaction from the perspective of the client, whereas anyone working for a bank is going to be focused on looking after the bank’s interests.
www.gcnews.com.au
Being experienced in this industry means your mortgage broker speaks the lender’s language, they know what to ask for to meet the client’s needs and they know whether or not the lender is offering a good deal. While lenders spend millions of dollars every year on advertising and promotion, chances are a good mortgage broker should generally be able to get the client a better deal than if they went to the lender direct. This might be a significant reduction on the interest rate, the waiving or reducing of fees, or some flexibility on the amount that can be borrowed. These kinds of offers might only be available to mortgage broker clients, for a limited period of time, or for certain types
posters. It’s all about the relationship At each of the various lenders, mortgage brokers deal with relationship managers, whose job it is to work with mortgage brokers to encourage them to write loans with their business, address any problems and to ensure the client application process goes smoothly. Mortgage brokers deal with these people almost daily and, over time, generally develop a good working relationship. It’s not unusual for something to go wrong, and when it does a mortgage broker can talk to contacts and have the problem addressed as quickly as possible – try doing that through a call centre! These relationships make it easier to get what the borrower needs.
Dealing with lenders direct Unless you’re familiar with the products, rates and lending policies of each of the lenders, it can be difficult to know what to ask for and whether the deal being offered is a good one. The saying goes ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’, but how would most people know what to ask for. Loan structure critical Another critical consideration is the loan structure – it’s not just about a good interest rate or having fees waived. Structuring of the loan is really important to ensure your needs are being met. This can be an extremely complex area. Smartline mortgage brokers have extensive experience and are able to negotiate expertly and confidently to secure a great deal for clients. If you’d like to leave the negotiation with a Smartline mortgage broker, you can visit us here to find an broker in your area.

Meet Sharon Brown
My family and I decided on a sea change and have recently moved from Manjimup, Western Australia, which is 307kms from Perth. After travelling to the Sunshine Coast on vacation over the past four years, my husband and I fell in love with the people and the area and decided to move here mid last year. The Sunshine Coast is a beautiful place, and especially the hinterland, we are proud to call this place home and I am very excited to help others do the same. Realising what I love to do; talking to people and helping people, the decision to focus my attention back to the Property Market was a no brainer! I have 15 years experience in business management with the last 12 years working alongside my husband in Manjimup where we had our own small motors store. Prior to purchasing our business, I started my career in real
estate with Ray White, Manjimup, Western Australia. I loved this position, as I enjoy meeting people and helping them to achieve their goals. My personal experience in owning and selling several homes, renovating, and owning a business has offered me valuable insights into all processes involved in the selling and buying process. Personal knowledge and experience I take with me when assisting clients in buying or selling their home; as if they were my own. I understand first hand, the emotions involved, and the importance of location and monitory factors. My motivation is the rewards of seeing a happy customer at the end of the day achieve the result they were hoping! If you are looking for a passionate, honest and hard working agent, please call me anytime on 0427 838 826.

Countdown to London Your guide to local Olympic sports
Suncoast Hinterland BMX is just warming up Contributed by Vicki Beutel The track situated next to the Glenview skate park on Mooloolah Connection Road has been undergoing a major facelift with many hours of hard work being put in. The machinery has been busy turning the rain damaged track into a track that can accommodate all riders of any ability from the four year old novice to the open age expert. We have a whole new team on the club committee who are working with the members / riders to bring the track up to a high standard that hopefully, within the next three years, mean that we can hold bigger BMX events at our track. We would like to thank our past committee members who worked long and hard and have now passed the baton on – thank you to all. BMX is one of the only sports that the whole family can participate in with ages varying from four to fifty plus; and both male and female. Racing ranges from club level up to state, national and world championships. This July Australia will have an Aussie BMX team at the London Olympics. BMX is a year round sport. Our race nights are a great time where families bring the camp chairs or blankets and settle in to watch the riders and enjoy the delicious food that the club canteen offers. On race nights riders are assigned to groups based on ability. There are five races throughout the night, with the kids, mum and dad racing on the same night. Where else can you find a sport that the whole family can participate in together? www.gcnews.com.au
At Hinterland BMX we have a new four month licence, which allows new riders to try BMX at the beginner level with unlimited access and the good news is that it only costs $40.00 and you can use the bike you ride to school. There are no special clothing needed, but for safety reasons you will need a long shirt and pants and a full-face helmet. Our training nights are every Monday night 6.00pm to 7.00pm, and from 7.00pm to 8.00pm the track is open for experienced riders only. Club racing nights are on every 2nd and 4th and 5th Friday of the month and cost for training is $2.00 and racing is $6.00. Training and racing are during the school terms only. If you want to know any more information or would love the kids to come and do a sport that doesn’t cost the earth then give the club a call and we will look after you. Please ring Marnie (Secretary) on 0408 888 709 or Stacey (Registrar) 5477 6841. You can also contact the club on the website. http://suncoasthinterland.bmxa.com.au or our Facebook page (Hinterland BMX Club).
Fast Olympic Facts – BMX • London is only the second Olympics for BMX • 3 men and 2 women make up the BMX team • There are only 2 gold medals on offer (men’s and women’s) • Australia came sixth in 2008 in both men and women • Aussie riders are ranked one and 2 on the world and gold medals beckon JUNE 6 2012 |

A Grade and Under 18’s travelled to Maroochydore on Sunday to take on the Swans. The Under 18’s tried hard against the much larger Maroochydore Team but were outgunned 46 - 12 on a very wet field. A Grade then produced a very committed and brave performance against the well credentialed home side holding them to 10 - 4 at half time only to see the Swans get away from them late in the game to win 30 - 4. Congratulations to Under 15 Players, Brodie Oosen and Trent Fogg for gaining selection in the Sunshine Coast Black Rep Side to play Sunshine Coast Gold in the 47th Battalion at Bribie Island this Friday Night. We wish them well in that game. with Jade King Potatoes! This year as usual, I planted a early batch of potatoes in January. I’ve been eagerly anticipating digging out ‘new’ potatoes by tunneling in from the side to pick these succulent treats whilst not damaging the plant. This is termed ‘bandicooting’ and this month I found out why this term is so relevant. My resident bandicoot has in fact beaten me to my harvest once again. I am sure I must have the fattest, most well fed bandicoot in history. I am now attempting to place mesh over my potato patch to save the remaining potatoes, because since my four legged foe’s discovery, the number of holes has increased exponentially each night. Despite this attack, I am still planting in my next lot of potatoes and also preparing to stage a couple of potato plantings over the next two months … provided I have enough room. Last year I did a mass planting of potatoes at the end of winter and whilst my harvest was phenomenal, they were difficult to save for a great length of time. This year I aim to plant my basic all-purpose cooking potatoes now, such as Sebago, Desiree, Dutch Creams and King Edwards and then closer to the end of winter, the more waxy salad varieties such as Banana (yellow), Sapphire (deep purple) and Cranberry Red (pink) to use in colourful salads. There are a few things to do when preparing for and planting potatoes, and to make it simple, I have put a few tips together.

• Always use certified seed potatoes or healthy specimens from previous crops. • Prepare seed potatoes for planting by exposing them to a bit of sunlight to promote stout shoots. I find they do this well enough on the kitchen bench. • Ensure you are planting in an area that has not grown potatoes, tomatoes or other solanaceae family in the previous four seasons. Also avoid areas where strawberries have been planted. • Ensure soil has good drainage and adequate nutrition, by incorporating plenty of compost, but avoid fresh manure. • Plant seed potato 10-15 cm deep, 30 cm between plants and 50-75 cm between rows. • As the potato plant shoot emerges through the soil, begin to build up a mixture of mulch, fertiliser and compost around it until about 40-50 cm in height. Give a final cover of mulch. • Wait until about a 3-4 weeks after flowering and you can ‘bandicoot’ a few early potatoes. • Wait until the plant dies off and harvest remaining tubers. Potato growing is a lot of fun and can be done straight in the garden, in raised beds, tyres, containers, or more simply straight on cultivated ground with the layers being added over top. I hope everyone gets to sample the heavenly taste of a fresh home grown potato and enjoys the immense sense of achievement when digging up bundles of spuds! Until next time in Get Up and Grow…

The bacon tree Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert after crossing into the United States, wandering aimlessly and starving. They are about to just lie down and wait for death, when all of a sudden Luis says: "hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell. Ees bacon, I theenk." "Si, Luis, eet sure smell like bacon." With renewed hope they struggle up the next sand dune, and there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon. There's raw bacon, there's fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon, every imaginable kind of cured pork. "Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved! Ees a bacon tree!"
